- 0:00We frequently hear from people who say that they cannot focus
- 0:04on their spiritual practice as they don't have a quiet space in
- 0:09which to meditate, or they live in a crowded, noisy city, or
- 0:15they are overwhelmed with all their duties relating to
- 0:18education, career, family, etcetera.
- 0:23They focus their attention on all of the external obstacles
- 0:27and use that as an excuse to avoid the focus on their inner
- 0:32spiritual life. If only I could find the time in
- 0:36a quiet place, I would meditate. Every day.
- 0:40We hear this refrain repeated in one form or another regularly.
- 0:47If only we could create the ideal external circumstances.
- 0:53Those who take up a spiritual practice in all earnestness soon
- 0:57discover that there are no perfect surroundings nor any
- 1:02perfect times to focus on their spiritual life.
- 1:07They therefore have to create the space internally needed to
- 1:11remain connected regardless of what they have in front of them
- 1:14in their external lives. It is interesting to note that
- 1:19Sri Krishna chose to provide the spiritual teaching encompassed
- 1:24with the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna while they were on the
- 1:28battlefield and awaiting A cataclysmic clash in the great
- 1:33Civil War described in the Mahabharata.
- 1:38Anecdotes abound about individuals who complained that
- 1:41people were talking outside the meditation hall while they were
- 1:45trying to meditate. Their meditation failure is
- 1:49blamed on what other people were doing.
- 1:53The teacher's response in one case was essentially why are you
- 1:57letting the talking of others interfere with your meditation?
- 2:01They did not complain that your meditation was disturbing their
- 2:05discussion. People try to go on retreats to
- 2:10achieve the perfect circumstances for spiritual
- 2:12progress. In some instances, of course, a
- 2:16period of time away from the daily routine can be very
- 2:20helpful, but they invariably find out that first, they carry
- 2:25their issues with them into the retreat, and second, they have
- 2:29not actually succeeded in resolving these issues when they
- 2:34return to their normal duties, Srioro Bindu observes quote.
- 2:41The inner spiritual progress does not depend on outer
- 2:44conditions so much as on the way we react to them from within.
- 2:50That has always been the ultimate verdict of spiritual
- 2:53experience. It is why we insist on taking
- 2:57the right attitude and persisting in it on an inner
- 3:00state not dependent on outer circumstances.
- 3:04A state of equality and calm if it cannot be done at once.
- 3:09Of inner happiness on going more and more within and looking from
- 3:15within outwards, instead of living in the surface mind which
- 3:20is always at the mercy of the shocks and blows of life.
- 3:24It is only from that inner state that one can be stronger than
- 3:28life and its disturbing forces and hope to conquer, to remain
- 3:34quiet within, firm in the will to go through, refusing to be
- 3:39disturbed or discouraged by difficulties or fluctuations.
- 3:44That is one of the first things to be learned in the path.
- 3:48To do otherwise is to encourage the instability of
- 3:52consciousness, the difficulty of keeping experience of which you
- 3:56complain. It is only if you keep quiet and
- 4:00steady within that the lines of experience can go on with some
- 4:04steadiness, though there are never without periods of
- 4:08interruptions and fluctuations. But these, if properly treated,
- 4:15can then become periods of assimilation and exhaustion of
- 4:19difficulty rather than denials of sadhna.
- 4:24A spiritual atmosphere is more important than outer conditions.
- 4:29If one can get that and also create one's own spiritual air
- 4:32to breathe in and live in it, that is the true condition of
- 4:38progress. End Quote.
