- 0:01Speaker 1: Charging about.
- 0:04Speaker 2: All right, let's have some fun talking about from Bravaldez
- 0:07Speaker 2: landing with the Tigers. First off, aj I need to
- 0:10Speaker 2: give full credit to Detroit. I was quite critical of
- 0:14Speaker 2: their off season, but their off season wasn't done yet,
- 0:17Speaker 2: and if you looked at their off season before this,
- 0:19Speaker 2: you're like, cool. They brought some guys back that were
- 0:22Speaker 2: actually they didn't even have the choice Glabor Torres returning
- 0:25Speaker 2: right with the qualifying offer. They signed Kyle Finnegan, they
- 0:28Speaker 2: had him already, they signed him back. Kenlee Jansen was
- 0:30Speaker 2: an addition Drew Anderson coming from overseas. But it was
- 0:33Speaker 2: a very very weak looking off season until they land
- 0:37Speaker 2: from Ravaldez. Thirty eight million dollars, highest ever average annual
- 0:41Speaker 2: value thirty eight per year, I should say, highest average
- 0:44Speaker 2: annual value for a left handed pitcher ever three years,
- 0:47Speaker 2: one hundred and fifteen million dollars. It's the most money
- 0:50Speaker 2: and the most years given out during the Scott Harris
- 0:52Speaker 2: Harris since he's taken over as the Tigers leader in
- 0:56Speaker 2: the front office. Yes, they did offer brag midmore than
- 0:59Speaker 2: thatlast year, but he didn't take it. So your thoughts
- 1:02Speaker 2: on all of this and how it makes the one
- 1:04Speaker 2: two punch for the Tigers look really good.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Two things on this one.
- 1:08Speaker 4: First of all, if you went into this offseason and said,
- 1:10Speaker 4: and now these guys weren't on the Tigers last year,
- 1:13Speaker 4: Glaber Finn, again, there was another whoever they there was
- 1:17Speaker 4: another one they brought back, and they brought those guys
- 1:20Speaker 4: in Kenley.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Let's just use Kenley.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Okay, he'd be like, man, the Tigers had a pretty
- 1:23Speaker 4: good offseason. But because they were some of those guys
- 1:26Speaker 4: are already on the Tigers. Then you're like, oh, they
- 1:28Speaker 4: just brought back the same team. Kind of like the
- 1:29Speaker 4: argument with the Yankees is right, now you throw fromber
- 1:32Speaker 4: in top. Yes, now you have a one two punch.
- 1:35Speaker 4: And what did aj Hinch say when we talked to
- 1:37Speaker 4: him all the time, We need another guy behind Trek
- 1:42Speaker 4: to really take pressure off Terrek. They're hoping it would
- 1:44Speaker 4: be Jack Flaherty. He's up and down right. They're hoping
- 1:47Speaker 4: it has been Casey Mice. He's had injury problems. He
- 1:49Speaker 4: did make the All Stars team last year, though, Reees
- 1:51Speaker 4: Soulsen had some injury problems. But now you go, Tarek
- 1:53Speaker 4: Frommer do you throw Jack against the three with the
- 1:56Speaker 4: way aj Hinch can manage a bullpen in the postseason.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Casey My looking good as a four, Olsen as the five.
- 2:02Speaker 4: This is a pretty good starting rotation, and you throw
- 2:05Speaker 4: in McGonagall and some of the other guys that they
- 2:07Speaker 4: have coming. The Tigers are on the rise, even if
- 2:10Speaker 4: school believes just because they have Fromber for three years.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I love what they've done.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Now.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Once it's done, they might go on sign someone else
- 2:17Speaker 4: who that he knows, but right now where they're at,
- 2:19Speaker 4: I love where the Tigers position themselves, especially as Bob
- 2:22Speaker 4: Nightingale said in an Al Central that you can go
- 2:24Speaker 4: up really fast.
- 2:26Speaker 5: There's a lot of teams that have like five quality pitchers,
- 2:30Speaker 5: and I would say some of those rotations people would
- 2:33Speaker 5: argue are better. Nobody has a top heavy lineup like this. Obviously,
- 2:38Speaker 5: a top heavy rotation like this. Obviously, if Zach Wheeler
- 2:42Speaker 5: comes back and as a cy Young top three CY
- 2:44Speaker 5: Young finisher again this year, and so is Christopher Sanchez,
- 2:47Speaker 5: I think that would be in power packed one to two,
- 2:51Speaker 5: but one two based on the fact that the numbers
- 2:56Speaker 5: across the league, American League, American League, Central, National, it
- 3:00Speaker 5: doesn't matter against lefties has been way down. This is
- 3:03Speaker 5: a massive, massive pickup for a team who has gone
- 3:07Speaker 5: to the playoffs the last two years and said, all right, well,
- 3:11Speaker 5: if I can just figure out how to win one
- 3:14Speaker 5: other game, you know, Scooble's gonna win it, and then
- 3:16Speaker 5: they go out and lose Schoobles games in different in
- 3:19Speaker 5: different fashions, and the Tigers still move on. So now,
- 3:22Speaker 5: the fact that they have two lefties that are both
- 3:26Speaker 5: number one, Schooble being an ace, Framber being a high
- 3:29Speaker 5: quality one. This is the most top heavy rotation in
- 3:35Speaker 5: the game for sure.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Well top heavy, I mean, I like some of the
- 3:39Speaker 2: guys that fill out there. You're just saying it's a
- 3:41Speaker 2: really nice one.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Too.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Top heavy means there's not much on the bottom. There's
- 3:44Speaker 2: still there's still talent, there are three, four or five.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yeah, there totally is.
- 3:49Speaker 5: But but as far as like a the fact that
- 3:53Speaker 5: Framber is a number one for all but maybe eight teams,
- 4:00Speaker 5: and he slots in behind the best pitcher in the game,
- 4:04Speaker 5: Paul Skeens could be the best picture. I get it,
- 4:06Speaker 5: you know, there's an argument there, but Skeens is the
- 4:08Speaker 5: best pitcher in the game, and then you slot a
- 4:10Speaker 5: number one behind them.
- 4:12Speaker 1: We heard this from tons of teams. The Red Sox
- 4:14Speaker 1: started out the offseason.
- 4:16Speaker 5: We're not going out for any We're not gonna go
- 4:18Speaker 5: pick up any threes or fours, like we're looking for
- 4:21Speaker 5: a number one to slot in behind Garrett Crochet.
- 4:24Speaker 1: They had their chance.
- 4:26Speaker 5: If you slot in a frame Ervaldez behind there, if
- 4:28Speaker 5: you slot in you know, a Freddie Peralta behind there,
- 4:33Speaker 5: you know, then hey, you know what. The Red Sox
- 4:35Speaker 5: have that top heavy rotation. I don't mean top heavy
- 4:38Speaker 5: in a negative way, because I really like what reees
- 4:40Speaker 5: Olsen does. I think Jack Flaherty has shown that he
- 4:44Speaker 5: has flashes of brilliance. I think he's a gamer, and
- 4:47Speaker 5: I think he goes out there every day. And I
- 4:49Speaker 5: think Casey mis Will has a chance to have an
- 4:53Speaker 5: entire full season of an all star type of pitcher
- 4:57Speaker 5: and not just you know, some flashes. But if he
- 5:00Speaker 5: stays healthy, he's already shown what he can do. So yes,
- 5:03Speaker 5: I think it's a great rotation, but it is ridiculous
- 5:07Speaker 5: that you get to go into a playoff series, which
- 5:09Speaker 5: is their goal, with a one to two punch of
- 5:12Speaker 5: Framber and Terrek.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I'm only mad about one thing here, Honestly, I saw
- 5:18Speaker 4: Scott Harris at the BBWAA. He didn't tell us that
- 5:21Speaker 4: this was coming down the pipeline, and it would have
- 5:23Speaker 4: been nice.
- 5:25Speaker 1: When I saw him.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I mean, he could have been like, hey, I just
- 5:27Speaker 4: want you to know, like just pulled me to the side.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Oh you know, hey, off the record, we're going to
- 5:31Speaker 4: sign fromber Just don't tell anybody.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Okay, I won't, but just so I would have known
- 5:35Speaker 3: in the back of my head.
- 5:36Speaker 4: And when everyone was saying pirates orios, I could have
- 5:38Speaker 4: been like, what about the Tigers.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I would have looked really smart.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But I understand, don't you think Frombert probably was trying
- 5:45Speaker 2: to get how much did Ranger Spires get one thirty
- 5:49Speaker 2: something years? Yeah, so maybe he was trying to get that,
- 5:53Speaker 2: even if it was over four years whatever. It is, right,
- 5:55Speaker 2: you're trying to play some game in your head.
- 5:58Speaker 3: No, but I don't care about them, Scott.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And he comes down on the price and the Tigers
- 6:02Speaker 2: are like, okay, we're in. We're in now.
- 6:04Speaker 4: It's all about foul territory though, Scott. Look how smart
- 6:07Speaker 4: we would have looked if we just would have said
- 6:08Speaker 4: the Tigers are in company.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Man, I'm with you.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I think My point is that I don't know if
- 6:15Speaker 2: they knew they were in at that point yet, that's
- 6:18Speaker 2: the thing, can I I can actually give you a difference.
- 6:20Speaker 4: So this has been going on for weeks now, so
- 6:22Speaker 4: he knew Scott when I see you, I don't know
- 6:25Speaker 4: when else see you, Scote, but I'm coming for you.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm just kidding.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I love Scott Monday of me, Monday.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Scott Harris. I love Scott here. Actually he's great. So
- 6:36Speaker 4: I can't. I can't. It's just it's all in fun. Okay,
- 6:38Speaker 4: Just everyone understand, it's all in fun.
- 6:40Speaker 2: This was the first time that he gave up a
- 6:42Speaker 2: pick with the signing too right. He had been playing
- 6:44Speaker 2: the long game, and we were saying all off season,
- 6:47Speaker 2: when is this team going to push their chips? And
- 6:48Speaker 2: this is the kind of move that pushes your chips
- 6:50Speaker 2: in and says, hey, can we now get to the
- 6:52Speaker 2: postseason and make a run riding these two starters, And
- 6:57Speaker 2: it looks like that is definitely possible. We're talking aj Hinch,
- 7:00Speaker 2: Tiger's manager tomorrow. Good timing. This is the team of
- 7:03Speaker 2: the week between this signing and the arbitration result. Again,
- 7:07Speaker 2: if you're watching right, now, we don't know yet, but
- 7:10Speaker 2: if you're watching later a lot of people do, we
- 7:12Speaker 2: might get that answer. So we'll let you know as
- 7:14Speaker 2: soon as we find it out. But also, this team
- 7:16Speaker 2: has not one, not two, but three free agents in
- 7:19Speaker 2: their starting rotation coming up after this season. It's not
- 7:22Speaker 2: just Schoogle, Casey Maiz and Jack Flaherty are both free agents,
- 7:25Speaker 2: so let's assume you lose all of them. Fran Barvaldez
- 7:29Speaker 2: is still there. But yes, all in is the situation
- 7:31Speaker 2: right now, and this team has some nice prospects coming
- 7:34Speaker 2: up through the pipe, but it does look like this
- 7:38Speaker 2: is one of their better chances to win a World
- 7:40Speaker 2: Series this season coming up. The Stotting rotation certainly has it.
- 7:44Speaker 5: What oh no, I just have one comment that just
- 7:47Speaker 5: thought about it, and maybe we'll talk about with Hinch tomorrow.
- 7:50Speaker 5: When Hin's got the job with the Tigers. He and
- 7:54Speaker 5: I were talking and he was talking about what they
- 7:57Speaker 5: have coming down the pipeline, like this is unbelievable. This
- 8:02Speaker 5: is like the pitching that we have coming down the
- 8:04Speaker 5: pipeline is pretty sick. And the fact that not every
- 8:09Speaker 5: one of those dudes that we talked about when he
- 8:12Speaker 5: and I spoke for a while, hit and the Tigers
- 8:17Speaker 5: still went in and made some other moves. Should show
- 8:20Speaker 5: teams who have this like plethora of pipeline, it's just
- 8:25Speaker 5: not gonna work out. If you have four prospects, you're lucky.
- 8:28Speaker 5: If two work out, If you have six prospects, you're lucky.
- 8:32Speaker 5: If two or three work out, like, it's not your
- 8:35Speaker 5: entire organization ready. So good for the Tigers for saying, Okay,
- 8:39Speaker 5: Casey Mice seems like he's hit. Scooble obviously has hit.
- 8:44Speaker 5: But if you go back to Wyn Hinch was first hired,
- 8:47Speaker 5: there were some other guys that weren't that didn't hit,
- 8:51Speaker 5: that they thought were going to anchor this rotation. And
- 8:55Speaker 5: they've built this playoff team during this time and they're
- 8:58Speaker 5: not afraid to continue to add to it. And I
- 9:00Speaker 5: think other teams need to do this.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I agree. And for from Er, I mean, the age
- 9:06Speaker 2: hurts him a little bit in terms of how many
- 9:08Speaker 2: years he's looking for He's been super solid and consistent.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I know you mentioned Kratz yesterday on the show while
- 9:14Speaker 2: I was gone, how he makes his starts every single year.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Maybe teams tried to dig him in the second half
- 9:20Speaker 2: he was a little weaker. His stuff dropped off a
- 9:22Speaker 2: bit over a five ra. The walk rates creeped up.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I think it was the highest it had been in
- 9:28Speaker 2: four years. But to me, we're nitpicking the sinker curve
- 9:32Speaker 2: ball combination, the ground balls that he gets. There's just
- 9:35Speaker 2: a lot to like and Aja when you watch him pitch,
- 9:39Speaker 2: it looks like that's going to last. He's also got
- 9:41Speaker 2: the build. This is not a fragile dude.
- 9:43Speaker 1: This is a big dude.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you're more worried, I mean, just being straightforward here,
- 9:48Speaker 2: You're more worried about the mental game. And let's forget
- 9:51Speaker 2: the Salazar incident. We've talked about that enough. It's just
- 9:54Speaker 2: he is a guy where you speak to two teammates
- 9:56Speaker 2: and people around him where you're like, you got to
- 9:58Speaker 2: you gotta harness it right. He's even talked about working
- 10:01Speaker 2: with mental skills coaches stuff like that. That's not a secret.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Those are stories that have actually been a success story.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Let's keep in mind he signed out to the Dominican
- 10:09Speaker 2: Republic for ten thousand dollars at twenty one years old.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Do you know how many people make it at twenty
- 10:14Speaker 2: one years old when they're signed as an international guy
- 10:17Speaker 2: almost zero, and especially when it's a ten K dude,
- 10:20Speaker 2: that means they don't really like you. They just think
- 10:21Speaker 2: like this is a complete lottery ticket. We'll give it
- 10:24Speaker 2: a shot. There's one tool, one pitch, something that we like.
- 10:28Speaker 2: So he is a super super development story from the
- 10:32Speaker 2: Houston Astros who ends up being a super contributed to
- 10:35Speaker 2: them for a long period of time. But anyway, it's
- 10:38Speaker 2: more about, hey, can we keep this in here and
- 10:40Speaker 2: keep them in the game, right? Can we keep the
- 10:42Speaker 2: brain the mind intact. He's a competitor. He pitches. As
- 10:46Speaker 2: you can see here from Chandler. Rome signed in twenty fifteen.
- 10:49Speaker 2: At one point in twenty nineteen he was on the
- 10:51Speaker 2: forty man shopping block, and then from twenty twenty to
- 10:54Speaker 2: twenty twenty five. He's worth about nineteen wins by Baseball
- 11:00Speaker 2: Reference War one twenty eight era plus nine hundred and
- 11:03Speaker 2: seventy three innings World Series clinching game that he won.
- 11:07Speaker 2: As Chandler said, he defines player development success. That's impressive
- 11:13Speaker 2: if you look at the whole body at work and
- 11:15Speaker 2: now the results paying off with a big contract.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Congratulations, we have me mentioned congratulations of Frombur and his family,
- 11:26Speaker 4: and congratulations to the Tigers. I mean, we all were
- 11:29Speaker 4: talking about everything else, but let's not forget congratulations to
- 11:32Speaker 4: Frombur and his family. Good for you, man, you stuck
- 11:35Speaker 4: it out and you did it.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yep, opt out after year two just in case he's
- 11:40Speaker 2: like the best picture in baseball the next couple of
- 11:41Speaker 2: years and or one of the best and wants to
- 11:44Speaker 2: take another dip and try and get a two or
- 11:45Speaker 2: three year deal instead of just the one that he
- 11:47Speaker 2: would have left at that point. Heading into twenty twenty eight,
- 11:50Speaker 2: there are deferrals. We don't know what that looks like yet,
- 11:52Speaker 2: so the number in net price and value, which is
- 11:55Speaker 2: one fifteen, might change a little bit. As a guy
- 11:58Speaker 2: who went to the GM meetings to plead his case. Right,
- 12:01Speaker 2: it all comes together here towards the end of the
- 12:03Speaker 2: off season, right heading into spring training. Last point here,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and then we'll get to some other signings. Did you
- 12:08Speaker 2: guys see the Jesse Rogers tweet, our friend Jesse tweeting
- 12:12Speaker 2: about who else was in on Tromper. I almost thought
- 12:14Speaker 2: it was like a parody tweet. It said the Orioles
- 12:17Speaker 2: were in, Okay, said the Blue Jays were in. Did
- 12:20Speaker 2: you guys see the third team.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It wasn't Pittsburgh the other day, you mean recently.
- 12:26Speaker 2: You'll never guess the third team that he go to
- 12:29Speaker 2: Twitter while we're talking right now, let's do this exercise.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I want to see your response one of you guys,
- 12:34Speaker 2: just if you have your phone queue up your phone.
- 12:37Speaker 2: You haven't said the team yet, and I want you
- 12:39Speaker 2: guys to see Rockies. We're in the same range in
- 12:44Speaker 2: terms of how things are going lately.
- 12:46Speaker 3: NAT's Twins.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Oh yeah, come on, they.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Were in on Freddy too. Supposedly they're trying.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Freddy Prince.
- 13:03Speaker 6: No freaking Freddy Peralta Prince.
- 13:07Speaker 2: That one actually makes a little more sense because Freddy
- 13:10Speaker 2: doesn't cost much. But no, no, that one makes sense
- 13:12Speaker 2: because he doesn't cost much in terms of money. You
- 13:14Speaker 2: think the Twins were about to shell out one hundred
- 13:16Speaker 2: and twenty million dollars for Framber Baldos this offseason after
- 13:19Speaker 2: what they've done before this and what they've done over
- 13:21Speaker 2: the last three years, they were suddenly just gonna be like,
- 13:23Speaker 2: just kidding, we want Framber.
- 13:26Speaker 5: How were they were They like that guy at an
- 13:29Speaker 5: auction where it's like, you know, hey, I'll take one
- 13:33Speaker 5: hundred dollar two, two, two two?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Can I get a three? Three? Three? Can I get
- 13:36Speaker 1: a three?
- 13:37Speaker 5: And they like scratched their head and they were like, oh,
- 13:40Speaker 5: we got four hundred and twins were like no mmmm.
- 13:45Speaker 5: And then someone else been They're like that was close.
- 13:49Speaker 2: No, We've done this exercise before. They're not that. What
- 13:52Speaker 2: they are is the person at the auction that says,
- 13:55Speaker 2: I'm just gonna act like I can ball with everyone else,
- 13:58Speaker 2: so I'm just gonna go right early on. I watched
- 14:01Speaker 2: this right and they're like, all right, Fromber at eighty
- 14:04Speaker 2: and they're like eighty and then someone's like eighty five
- 14:07Speaker 2: and they're like, all right, we were in on fromber
- 14:09Speaker 2: see you.
- 14:11Speaker 1: They're like, dang it. I really want to know.
- 14:13Speaker 5: I hope it comes out how how close the Blue
- 14:16Speaker 5: Jays really were, like what they were willing to go
- 14:19Speaker 5: because of how stacked, Like are they willing to send
- 14:22Speaker 5: Cody Ponce to Triple A because you know with his
- 14:27Speaker 5: thirty million for three years the Triple A? Like where
- 14:30Speaker 5: where he would have fit? Or like is Shane Bieber
- 14:33Speaker 5: more hurt than what we thought? Like I want to
- 14:36Speaker 5: know where the pirates were too, Pirates fans at me,
- 14:39Speaker 5: let me know where were you guys so close?
- 14:46Speaker 2: We have breaking news people. Derek Scouble is going to
- 14:51Speaker 2: make thirty two million dollars this year. He went to
- 14:55Speaker 2: battle against his team, the Tigers, who said he was
- 14:59Speaker 2: only worth nineteen million dollars, which was less than the
- 15:02Speaker 2: record for an arbitration eligible pitcher. That record was eleven
- 15:07Speaker 2: years ago David Price nineteen point seventy five mil. So
- 15:10Speaker 2: he said, I'm worth thirty two. They said, nah, you're
- 15:12Speaker 2: nineteen and the arbitration panel said, you guys are crazy.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Scooble wins. So he is getting thirty two million dollars.
- 15:19Speaker 2: The Tigers just signed from Brivaldez, so I don't know
- 15:22Speaker 2: how much the deferrals are, but you put those two together,
- 15:25Speaker 2: there's going to be seventy million bucks at the top
- 15:28Speaker 2: of the rotation. This the final season for Schoogle before
- 15:30Speaker 2: he hits free agency. Almost everybody looked at this and said,
- 15:36Speaker 2: what am I missing? How can they win? As in
- 15:39Speaker 2: MLB and the Tigers on this one. Jim Bowden, who
- 15:42Speaker 2: is a former front office exec, he super pro cap
- 15:44Speaker 2: stuff like that, but he even said on our show
- 15:47Speaker 2: and in other places, I don't understand how this could
- 15:51Speaker 2: even be a case, and clearly the arbitration panel agreed.
- 15:55Speaker 2: When you are a five plus arbitration guy, that is
- 15:58Speaker 2: when you can start to make comps two you free agency,
- 16:01Speaker 2: School's got awards, he's got it all. This was going
- 16:04Speaker 2: to be a tough one even if he didn't actually
- 16:06Speaker 2: bring the two SAGNG awards with him. So AJ your
- 16:09Speaker 2: thoughts on.
- 16:09Speaker 3: The dub or did he bring those?
- 16:14Speaker 1: Or did he We'll ask him in training.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Maybe he did, Maybe he did it just saying he
- 16:21Speaker 4: might have. Uh, but I'm just gonna tell you this
- 16:24Speaker 4: right now.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I'm pope. You heard me, Yale. I love this.
- 16:26Speaker 4: This is freaking awesome. Yes, go Trek Scoogle you deserve it.
- 16:31Speaker 4: And all the people out there saying, you know, listen,
- 16:34Speaker 4: I understand markets for free agency with Fromber.
- 16:38Speaker 6: And arbitration is different. But because Scooble is a fifth
- 16:40Speaker 6: to five plus player, he can use free agency as
- 16:45Speaker 6: a point in his case. And they did that. I
- 16:48Speaker 6: guarantee you.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Scott Boss said we are using Scherzer to grom Verlander
- 16:52Speaker 4: all these guys that are making all this money, and
- 16:54Speaker 4: they would have used Fromber on his own team if
- 16:57Speaker 4: they had known. And Fromer is not for all the
- 16:58Speaker 4: people on Twitter saying this fromber is not represented by
- 17:01Speaker 4: Scott Borris. He's an Octagon client, right, So Scott Boris
- 17:04Speaker 4: did not know this. But if he hadn't known this,
- 17:06Speaker 4: they would have used this too because it would have
- 17:08Speaker 4: shown two things. One it's his own team and two
- 17:11Speaker 4: they just paid a starting pitcher who many people say
- 17:14Speaker 4: is not as good as Trek schoobl less than what
- 17:16Speaker 4: Schoobol is asking for. So way to go, Trek Scoogle
- 17:19Speaker 4: super excited about this. Good for you, and you know what,
- 17:23Speaker 4: Tiger fans, you should be excited too, because this means
- 17:26Speaker 4: he ain't trading them and they're going for it this year.
- 17:28Speaker 3: So good on you Tigers.
- 17:30Speaker 2: They weren't trading him either way, I know, but now
- 17:33Speaker 2: of the case, but now, well now the fraanbur news
- 17:38Speaker 2: I think helps add to all of this. And I
- 17:42Speaker 2: mean now they're not trading him period. The chances of
- 17:44Speaker 2: them not being in the mix that the trade deadline
- 17:46Speaker 2: and then having to trade him are very low. And
- 17:50Speaker 2: then Krats, the chances of them being in the mix
- 17:52Speaker 2: and then trading him would be insane. You don't do that.
- 17:56Speaker 2: So Schoogle is going to play out the year with
- 17:58Speaker 2: the Tigers, he's going to make thirty two million bucks.
- 18:00Speaker 2: If you took that price number and you put inflation
- 18:03Speaker 2: on it, then it's about twenty seven million bucks, still
- 18:07Speaker 2: less than the thirty two or I guess still thirty
- 18:11Speaker 2: two is above that, but it's above the midpoint. I
- 18:13Speaker 2: should say, still more than the midpoint. The midpoint is
- 18:15Speaker 2: what you're arguing, twenty five and a half million bucks.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Are you worth more than that? And just by inflation alone,
- 18:22Speaker 2: let alone comping Schoogle and his recent accomplishments to where
- 18:26Speaker 2: price was at at that moment, means it's a really
- 18:29Speaker 2: tough case. He comps himself against other pictures that are
- 18:33Speaker 2: out there that have bigger salaries than him. I mean
- 18:35Speaker 2: fromber came after that, but it would have been another
- 18:38Speaker 2: to add to the mix among many other pictures where
- 18:41Speaker 2: he could be like, oh, we're doing free agent comps
- 18:44Speaker 2: better than him, better than him, better than him. We're good.
- 18:47Speaker 2: So I'm sure we'll get much more on what happened
- 18:50Speaker 2: inside the room.
- 18:52Speaker 3: But they don't talk about it.
- 18:55Speaker 2: No, we'll get we'll get some info, Yes they do.
- 18:58Speaker 2: You don't think they'll not.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Really, most a lot of guys don't talk about it.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Corn Burns September about it.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Corbyn Burns told us about how they blamed the whole
- 19:09Speaker 2: thing on him making two bad starts out of a billion.
- 19:12Speaker 4: He's one of the few that's ever talked about it.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Most guys don't talk about it.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Okay, largest salary ever in the arbitration tration system, thirty
- 19:20Speaker 2: two mil. It's only a million more than what Juan
- 19:23Speaker 2: Soto got for position player that's in that arbitration period.
- 19:29Speaker 2: So the picture now, three years later beat Soto. It's
- 19:34Speaker 2: still just crazy to look back, and I know this
- 19:36Speaker 2: is all funny money for most people in life, but
- 19:38Speaker 2: this is just how the game works. And again, if
- 19:40Speaker 2: it's not going to him, it's going to the team.
- 19:44Speaker 2: The record before this was nineteen.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Nineteen.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Yeah, sos for him and I only have two points.
- 19:57Speaker 1: The first one.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Man he could still be traded and would still be
- 20:02Speaker 5: of value if he could. If he was traded, I'm
- 20:05Speaker 5: not saying he's getting traded. I'm saying a thirty two
- 20:07Speaker 5: million dollars. There are very few teams that'd be like
- 20:11Speaker 5: he's a little too high price. The teams that want
- 20:14Speaker 5: to win, and the other thing that I'm looking forward
- 20:16Speaker 5: to and I know this is very much like, hey,
- 20:18Speaker 5: let's enjoy this one thing. Let's enjoy this.
- 20:22Speaker 1: What's his free agency gonna look like?
- 20:24Speaker 5: I mean, we get to do it, and it's gonna
- 20:26Speaker 5: be marred by the whole CBA discussion. Maybe it would
- 20:30Speaker 5: speed it up because somebody's gonna want to sign him
- 20:33Speaker 5: long term before the CBA, before the owners lock the
- 20:37Speaker 5: players out. But man, what is it gonna look like?
- 20:39Speaker 5: It's starting with a four. So if you don't have
- 20:42Speaker 5: a four in front of your two commas that you're
- 20:45Speaker 5: gonna offer him, don't come to the table. He's gonna
- 20:48Speaker 5: break the record. It's gonna be awesome.
- 20:51Speaker 2: So, AYJ, this morning, you were going back and forth
- 20:53Speaker 2: with Ben Burlander and he was posting, how well, I
- 20:57Speaker 2: guess not back and forth. You quote tweeted what he
- 20:59Speaker 2: said friendly exchange. No no, no, Ill Will. I'm just
- 21:03Speaker 2: saying you were kind of clarifying, to be honest, what
- 21:05Speaker 2: he was talking about, because there's so much public misinformation
- 21:11Speaker 2: and the education process on arbitration is kind of crazy.
- 21:14Speaker 2: So he was talking about how like, I don't know
- 21:15Speaker 2: who needs to hear this, but Framber and Trek Scoogle
- 21:19Speaker 2: are not to be compared since Schoogle is in the
- 21:22Speaker 2: arbitration system, and it's like, no, actually, they are definitely
- 21:25Speaker 2: to be compared. That is exactly how the arbitration system
- 21:28Speaker 2: works for someone that gets to this point. So you wrote,
- 21:31Speaker 2: how if you don't think Scott Boris would have used
- 21:33Speaker 2: this contract in the case you don't know how it works.
- 21:35Speaker 2: They absolutely can use free agent contracts. School's year away
- 21:37Speaker 2: from free agency, therefore can use comps in free agency.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Jim Boden, our resident GM, has been texting with me
- 21:43Speaker 2: all day sending me information. Of course he was on
- 21:46Speaker 2: the front office side. He was in these battles for
- 21:48Speaker 2: decades AJA, and he was super oud of it, saying
- 21:51Speaker 2: this is a no doubter. He was like, School is
- 21:54Speaker 2: definitely going to When I'm actually texting with him right now,
- 21:56Speaker 2: I was like, because of course MLB is going to
- 21:59Speaker 2: advise to go at nineteen and I was like, what
- 22:02Speaker 2: number do you think the Tigers should have done? That
- 22:04Speaker 2: would have driven up the midpoint where they would have won.
- 22:06Speaker 2: So anyway, he's going back, I'll let you comment and
- 22:09Speaker 2: then I'll let you go and then I'll no, well, no.
- 22:12Speaker 4: People listen First of all, I wasn't argument with Ben Verlinder.
- 22:15Speaker 4: I just wanted people to understand that, yes, it is
- 22:16Speaker 4: a different thing. Okay, free agency, arbitration different, but because
- 22:20Speaker 4: he's five plus, he can use any free agent contract
- 22:24Speaker 4: out there that's been signed as a free agent because
- 22:27Speaker 4: he's one year away. And I've talked about this, you
- 22:28Speaker 4: can use one year ahead, and it's covered.
- 22:31Speaker 3: In the CBA. But most people dont understand.
- 22:33Speaker 4: It's like they just hear things on Twitter and they
- 22:35Speaker 4: hear things on whatever they're listening to. But in the CBA,
- 22:38Speaker 4: it actually lays out the rules of arbitration, and one
- 22:41Speaker 4: of the things is if you're a five plus, you
- 22:43Speaker 4: can use free agency.
- 22:44Speaker 6: And so that's what Terry schools, I guarantee you.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Scott Boris argued, Hey, these guys have all been free agents,
- 22:50Speaker 4: they all signed for this. Some of them might have
- 22:52Speaker 4: had three Cy Young's. You know, Verlander sures of those guys,
- 22:56Speaker 4: but he's like, this guy's not even a free agent yet,
- 22:59Speaker 4: he's already got two sided, he's dominated the you know,
- 23:01Speaker 4: he's got his team to the postseason. He's done all
- 23:03Speaker 4: these things that nobody really has ever done to that point.
- 23:06Speaker 4: So he should be higher than anybody else. Now the
- 23:08Speaker 4: number for the Tigers, listen, MLBIT one hundred percent has
- 23:12Speaker 4: influence on what they file at. Okay, if they would
- 23:15Speaker 4: have filed at twenty two twenty three and made the midpoint,
- 23:18Speaker 4: you know, twenty seven to twenty eight, they had a
- 23:20Speaker 4: better chance. But because they fired so filed so low,
- 23:23Speaker 4: and then David Price from twenty fifteen was just a
- 23:26Speaker 4: little bit ahead of it, it seemed like all they
- 23:29Speaker 4: had to do was just show, like, man, he's gonna
- 23:31Speaker 4: make less than David Price.
- 23:32Speaker 3: That's a big thing.
- 23:33Speaker 4: And if all they had to do was show twenty
- 23:35Speaker 4: five point five million and one cent, if he was
- 23:38Speaker 4: worth twenty five point five and one cent.
- 23:40Speaker 1: He wins.
- 23:41Speaker 4: We don't know why they picked he wins. He wins,
- 23:43Speaker 4: And that's it. That's all I was trying to say.
- 23:45Speaker 4: And I also just keep tweeting at people. Even though
- 23:48Speaker 4: the Internet says that Scot Borris is from ravald as
- 23:50Speaker 4: his agent, he is not.
- 23:51Speaker 3: He is reaped by Octagon.
- 23:53Speaker 4: So no, Scott Boris did not have any clue that
- 23:55Speaker 4: from Ravaldees was signing this with the Tigers when he
- 23:58Speaker 4: was sitting in that room.
- 23:59Speaker 3: That's it. That's all I want to say.
- 24:01Speaker 1: That's it.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Congratulations, dere, goodbye to you.
- 24:05Speaker 1: AJ.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Well, well, before I go, I gotta see this Scott.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Happy birthday.
- 24:09Speaker 4: It's Tank Aaron's birthday, and it's also my son's nineteenth birthday.
- 24:13Speaker 3: So happy birthday, Austin.
- 24:14Speaker 4: I love you, and I appreciate that you guys wore
- 24:17Speaker 4: UAB green form today. I'm going to watch his game
- 24:19Speaker 4: right now. He starts at two o'clock Central, so appreciate it.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Love you guys. Have a great weekend.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it was back when I had the frosted tips
- 24:28Speaker 3: by the way.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys were matching back then. Yeah, Austin, happy birthday,
- 24:32Speaker 2: Good luck in your game. We are wearing your UAB
- 24:34Speaker 2: green AJ. Have a good night watching the game, and
- 24:38Speaker 2: then we'll see you on Monday. I'll be back with
- 24:40Speaker 2: you in person. Enjoy the super Bowl.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Thanks kil Hawks.
- 24:43Speaker 1: There you go.
- 24:44Speaker 2: I'm with you on that one, all right. So let's
- 24:46Speaker 2: continue this just for a moment because I'm going back
- 24:48Speaker 2: and forth with Bowden right now, and I'll share bits
- 24:50Speaker 2: and pieces of what he was sharing with me because
- 24:54Speaker 2: the misinformation out there is nuts.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:57Speaker 2: So the way this works is a five year player
- 25:01Speaker 2: can be compared to free agents if the roles are similar,
- 25:05Speaker 2: statistical profiles, lineup, performance, trajectory is comparable. This all stuff
- 25:10Speaker 2: coming from the CBA salary cited are from recent arbitration outcomes,
- 25:16Speaker 2: and then it says why Scoogle can reach into the
- 25:18Speaker 2: class above as in the free agency period. He checks
- 25:23Speaker 2: the boxes that arbitrators look for when allowing limited class
- 25:26Speaker 2: above comps true frontline starter, cy Young caliber seasons, Cy
- 25:31Speaker 2: Young seasons, hardware, and top of the league finishes matter
- 25:34Speaker 2: a lot in hearings, full high impact season durability. You're
- 25:38Speaker 2: getting all of this right. So I asked JB. I
- 25:41Speaker 2: was like, where do you think the numbers should have
- 25:43Speaker 2: been filed? And he's like, I think Boris could have
- 25:45Speaker 2: even gone maybe to thirty six, and the Tigers probably
- 25:50Speaker 2: should have filed at like twenty eight. And then he
- 25:52Speaker 2: thinks both sides should have settled at thirty two, so
- 25:55Speaker 2: he ends up getting thirty two anyway. But he basically said,
- 25:58Speaker 2: I mean, there's been a lot of law is actually
- 26:00Speaker 2: on the player side with this, so you have to
- 26:03Speaker 2: be careful and not go too crazy. Many people thought
- 26:06Speaker 2: thirty two was crazy, but I mean here's somebody who's
- 26:08Speaker 2: in our rooms all the time, who is fighting on
- 26:10Speaker 2: the team and executive side, who said, yeah, I think
- 26:12Speaker 2: you could have even potentially gone higher. But the fact
- 26:16Speaker 2: that the other side files so damn low. I mean,
- 26:19Speaker 2: he said he thinks Scoogle could have won even at
- 26:20Speaker 2: thirty four to thirty six. Special accomplishments always gets paid
- 26:24Speaker 2: in arbitration and always breaks records, and he is the
- 26:28Speaker 2: pinnacle of special accomplishments.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Right now.
- 26:30Speaker 2: You had someone that was driving the perfect storm durability
- 26:34Speaker 2: plus back to back cy Young Awards. That means I
- 26:37Speaker 2: am the best back to back years, making full starts,
- 26:41Speaker 2: riding that into the playoffs. I'm a one man wrecking
- 26:43Speaker 2: crew on my team. That is very obvious. We always go, oh, Scooble,
- 26:47Speaker 2: and we look at which game Schooble's pitching in the playoffs.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It just seemed like a home run and it ended
- 26:52Speaker 2: up being that way. And some people might think we're
- 26:53Speaker 2: talking too much about this, but it's a historical case.
- 26:56Speaker 2: We like to bring you inside what the game is
- 26:58Speaker 2: talking about, and everyone in the game has been talking
- 27:01Speaker 2: about this for a bit because it leads to a
- 27:03Speaker 2: bigger battle. But it also just says, Hey, a guy
- 27:06Speaker 2: that's been pitching in the bigs for a while now
- 27:08Speaker 2: and who's been in pro ball for ten plus years
- 27:11Speaker 2: and is the best in class is still making what
- 27:15Speaker 2: the dude from eleven years ago is making. Imagine if
- 27:19Speaker 2: you did that with an NBA player and you looked
- 27:20Speaker 2: back at eleven years ago and said, oh, okay, same
- 27:23Speaker 2: salary's there.
- 27:24Speaker 5: I mean, especially with doesn't add up, especially with how
- 27:27Speaker 5: long it takes to get to free agency. You know,
- 27:29Speaker 5: the other leagues, it's it's a different it's a different case.
- 27:32Speaker 5: And so in free agency has been way back to
- 27:36Speaker 5: current flood. And you know, the original the original making
- 27:40Speaker 5: of the Players Union, like there was there was no
- 27:42Speaker 5: free agency, and some of the some of the things
- 27:45Speaker 5: that were brought up by owners like, okay, well if
- 27:48Speaker 5: somebody leaves for free agency. Their first proposal was if
- 27:51Speaker 5: somebody leaves for free agency, then the team that he
- 27:55Speaker 5: goes to, the team that he came from, gets to
- 27:58Speaker 5: pick whatever player they want from the other team that
- 28:01Speaker 5: he goes to, like ASA nine things. So arbitration is
- 28:05Speaker 5: a very necessary for I guess some teams necessary evil,
- 28:10Speaker 5: but for the fact of.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Being able to.
- 28:14Speaker 5: Maximize your value as a player, because your career, even
- 28:17Speaker 5: if it's twenty years, is very short compared to the
- 28:21Speaker 5: length that a team is going to be a team
- 28:24Speaker 5: for the history of baseball. And that's why this is historic,
- 28:27Speaker 5: because there will be another player who wins two Cy
- 28:31Speaker 5: Youngs before his last year of arbitration. There will be
- 28:35Speaker 5: another pitcher of Paul Skeins who is increasing his value.
- 28:42Speaker 5: And had Trek Skoubel lost this case to Major League Baseball,
- 28:47Speaker 5: not to the Tigers, if he had lost this case,
- 28:51Speaker 5: then it would have hurt so many other players. I'm
- 28:55Speaker 5: not saying like hundreds of players, but the handfuls of
- 28:59Speaker 5: players that are able to push salaries for their short,
- 29:04Speaker 5: short careers, like I said, and like Paul Skeenes, Paul
- 29:09Speaker 5: Skins right now is like let's go Trek, thank you.
- 29:13Speaker 5: If somebody owes Trek any any dinner, it's Paul Skins.
- 29:17Speaker 5: Because Paul Skins he has started out his career better
- 29:21Speaker 5: than better than Trek's google. So if he continues on
- 29:25Speaker 5: the trajectory that he has right now, you're talking about
- 29:28Speaker 5: a guy who could have three or four sims. I
- 29:32Speaker 5: don't even I don't even understand how I could be
- 29:34Speaker 5: saying something like that. But before this, you know guys
- 29:37Speaker 5: that had multiple back to back cy youngs before before
- 29:40Speaker 5: they even reached arbitration. Tim linsecom he pushed, He pushed
- 29:44Speaker 5: that before he was even to his first arbitration. So
- 29:48Speaker 5: he helped push that. David Price pushed it to where
- 29:52Speaker 5: Trek Scouble is and now Tarrek Scougle pushed it to
- 29:54Speaker 5: where Paul Skins will.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Be perfectly stated, that's what this show's for. We're just
- 30:02Speaker 2: trying to explain it all as best as possible and
- 30:05Speaker 2: that should do it. Red Sox fans were looking at
- 30:15Speaker 2: everyone tweeting out the Red Sox signed an infielder, and
- 30:18Speaker 2: they were like, who Isaiah Connor fileffa nice depth piece.
- 30:23Speaker 2: He's been a really solid utility defender. He can play second,
- 30:28Speaker 2: he can give you short, he can give you third,
- 30:30Speaker 2: he can bounce around there. They're still looking to complete
- 30:32Speaker 2: their infield but Socks fans aj are like, cool, happy
- 30:37Speaker 2: with that. Where's our big power bat that they talked
- 30:41Speaker 2: about in the beginning of the offseason publicly they said
- 30:43Speaker 2: we need more pop. So they lose Bregmant. They tried
- 30:46Speaker 2: for him, they tried for Pete Alonzo. They didn't get him.
- 30:49Speaker 2: You know, Sars, for example, said right now, the models
- 30:52Speaker 2: put them at about mid tier for position players. We
- 30:55Speaker 2: can show that tweet before you comment if we have it.
- 30:58Speaker 2: I think he said they're sevent right now in projections
- 31:02Speaker 2: for their position players. Again, we're not. This show isn't
- 31:04Speaker 2: just playing the numbers game. But I'm just using some
- 31:07Speaker 2: context here. Do you feel like they're a bat short
- 31:10Speaker 2: with their infield?
- 31:12Speaker 3: I think that's the thing. I love their pitching listen.
- 31:17Speaker 3: I love Ikf.
- 31:18Speaker 4: I think he does a lot of things really well,
- 31:20Speaker 4: especially defensively. He's not bringing a ton of pop. You know,
- 31:23Speaker 4: he'll get you some knocks. It's still a base or
- 31:25Speaker 4: two for you, but he's not changing the dynamic of
- 31:29Speaker 4: a lineup. I like this signing for if if someone
- 31:32Speaker 4: fails at second or third, they can move them around.
- 31:35Speaker 4: If story gets hurt, they can play them at shortstop,
- 31:38Speaker 4: things like that. But this is not a needle mover.
- 31:39Speaker 4: It's great for IKF that he got a job in Boston.
- 31:42Speaker 3: He'll go there and probably love playing there.
- 31:44Speaker 4: But yeah, I wish they would have gone out and
- 31:46Speaker 4: got as Warez or a Bragman or someone like that.
- 31:48Speaker 3: But they did it, but they're really.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Good at pitching, so hopefully they're pitching can carry them
- 31:53Speaker 4: a long way.
- 31:53Speaker 3: And listen, maybe.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Cassis comes back and goes crazy, or I don't don't know,
- 32:00Speaker 4: Christian Campbell figures it out. I've seen video of him
- 32:02Speaker 4: recently changing some stuff in his swing.
- 32:04Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 32:05Speaker 4: We'll see, but right now, I mean, IKF, congratulations, but not.
- 32:08Speaker 3: A needle over for me.
- 32:10Speaker 2: They have guys that have high ground ball rates too,
- 32:12Speaker 2: Crats Ranger, Suairez. Of course, Sonny Gray is a high
- 32:15Speaker 2: ground ball percentage. So at the very least get that
- 32:19Speaker 2: run prevention in check. And it's not like they don't
- 32:21Speaker 2: have options. They just were seeking some type of infield
- 32:25Speaker 2: pop that they didn't really get.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Yeah, Scott, you can have all the run prevention you want.
- 32:31Speaker 4: You look at the Tigers last year in the playoffs,
- 32:34Speaker 4: but at some point you got to score some dang runs.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Like I'm sorry, like run prevent all you want, but
- 32:40Speaker 4: if you don't score it. So if you can find
- 32:42Speaker 4: the best of both worlds, then you're obviously great. That's
- 32:45Speaker 4: like the Dodgers and the Blue Jays were great at it.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Last year.
- 32:48Speaker 4: They had great run prevention they had dudes that could
- 32:50Speaker 4: also bang. So yeah, it's great run prevention, run prevention,
- 32:53Speaker 4: run prevention, but at the end of the day, you
- 32:55Speaker 4: got to have some big dudes that can hit the
- 32:56Speaker 4: ball over the fence and drive in some runs. Yeah,
- 32:59Speaker 4: it's about opportunistics run scoring. When you have guys like
- 33:02Speaker 4: Trek School and you have guys like Ranger Suarez in
- 33:06Speaker 4: the playoffs has been lights out like elite. Maybe during
- 33:10Speaker 4: the regular season there's you know, there's some questions of
- 33:13Speaker 4: what's his elite status, but you do have to be
- 33:16Speaker 4: able to pick the ball absolutely, And I think this
- 33:18Speaker 4: is an upgrade for the Red Sox because they had
- 33:21Speaker 4: some troubles.
- 33:22Speaker 5: We had Alex Korra on here. He felt like they
- 33:24Speaker 5: were trending the other direction. They started the season out
- 33:27Speaker 5: as the worst defending team in baseball, particularly they're infield.
- 33:32Speaker 5: But this is what happens when you play guys in
- 33:33Speaker 5: positions that they're not considerably used to. You have, like
- 33:39Speaker 5: you just have moving pieces because they're trying to get
- 33:42Speaker 5: the best lineup out there. You have to be opportunistic
- 33:45Speaker 5: with your power and I think I KF is going
- 33:48Speaker 5: to get a lot of flak because Red Sox fans
- 33:52Speaker 5: are like, oh infielder, oh.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Man, I hope, oh what like I had two home
- 33:57Speaker 1: runs last year?
- 33:58Speaker 5: Who I kf is really good at what he does
- 34:03Speaker 5: and he's gonna be remembered for negative things. He's gonna
- 34:05Speaker 5: be but this is a guy who won a Gold Glove.
- 34:08Speaker 5: And then other teams felt like the Yankees felt like, oh,
- 34:11Speaker 5: we can switch him to be a shortstop.
- 34:14Speaker 1: We can switch it.
- 34:14Speaker 5: His value is in that utility role and this adds
- 34:18Speaker 5: to that depth for that defense. But they've still swung
- 34:22Speaker 5: and missed on that final little piece that I think
- 34:26Speaker 5: would take pressure off of Roman Anthony. People say it's
- 34:29Speaker 5: contraras at first base. I'll say it's a nice signing.
- 34:33Speaker 5: It's not that one that like, they're right now banking
- 34:36Speaker 5: on the fact that Roman Anthony will be an MVP
- 34:40Speaker 5: caliber bat and this early in his career, that is
- 34:44Speaker 5: a lot of pressure.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Can he do it? Absolutely, he can do it.
- 34:48Speaker 5: But to make him carry this after you got rid
- 34:52Speaker 5: of Devers, after you couldn't resign Bragman, that is a large,
- 34:56Speaker 5: large task to be the guy in your second season.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Well said, really well said. Let's start with Miguel enduhar
- 35:13Speaker 2: one year four million dollars. San Diego Padres two million
- 35:17Speaker 2: dollars in incentives that could bring it up to six
- 35:21Speaker 2: as far as I know. So what do you think
- 35:23Speaker 2: about in Duhar landing with San Diego Krats? I mean,
- 35:29Speaker 2: the Padres have been somewhat quiet. They did bring back
- 35:31Speaker 2: Michael King, they lose Luisa Rise. What do you think
- 35:36Speaker 2: of their offseason and the Duhar edition. I feel like
- 35:39Speaker 2: he has barely gotten any love in the public spheres.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Also played for some crappy teams lately, but he's been
- 35:45Speaker 2: really good as a platoon guy.
- 35:48Speaker 5: He has been very good. He doesn't take care of
- 35:52Speaker 5: the need for them to add more slug so I
- 35:56Speaker 5: think he's kind of a reciprocal piece. But I think
- 35:59Speaker 5: this team, I think this team is really good and
- 36:02Speaker 5: there is there. Yes, if you're gonna that's the beauty
- 36:05Speaker 5: of baseball, you know you're gonna pick out the negative.
- 36:07Speaker 5: Oh they didn't hit for enough slug Yes, you're right,
- 36:09Speaker 5: they didn't. But they have a dynamic lineup that I
- 36:13Speaker 5: think you're gonna see in improvement from Jackson Merrill. I
- 36:17Speaker 5: think maybe he had a little bit of a down
- 36:20Speaker 5: year compared to his rookie year. But he was dealing
- 36:23Speaker 5: with some injuries. I think the sky's the limit for him.
- 36:26Speaker 5: I think they have veterans that go out there and
- 36:28Speaker 5: they play every single day. And they're a playoff team. Yes,
- 36:32Speaker 5: they're playing a tough division. It's gonna be tough from
- 36:34Speaker 5: the win the division.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 36:36Speaker 5: Do I think they sat on their hands this offseason?
- 36:39Speaker 5: Absolutely not. I think they. I think they had their
- 36:43Speaker 5: offseason at the trade deadline and then they went out
- 36:46Speaker 5: and brought Michael King back. And there's so many like, oh,
- 36:49Speaker 5: you know, you know, running the same team back and
- 36:52Speaker 5: the whole offseason. Are they at the trade paveta? Is
- 36:54Speaker 5: this a if AJ Pereller feels like there's something that
- 36:58Speaker 5: will make his team better, he's going to do it.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Whether it's get.
- 37:03Speaker 5: Getting rid of a top prospect to add a JP
- 37:06Speaker 5: Sears and a Mason Miller, whether it's bringing back Michael
- 37:10Speaker 5: King on a three year type of Sean Maniah type
- 37:14Speaker 5: of deal that the Mets gave to Sean and Ia
- 37:17Speaker 5: and Michael King, you know, coming off a little bit
- 37:19Speaker 5: of an injury, like, he's going to make this team
- 37:21Speaker 5: the best they can. And I think they were already
- 37:23Speaker 5: a pretty good team. Could they have done enough this
- 37:27Speaker 5: offseason for me to say they're better than the Dodgers.
- 37:32Speaker 5: They're you know, they're or they're even the second best
- 37:35Speaker 5: team in the National League. I don't know that they
- 37:36Speaker 5: had those moves available to them, and maybe their rotation
- 37:40Speaker 5: will be a little short, but I think getting Joe
- 37:44Speaker 5: Musgroves back is a huge thing. Bringing Michael King back
- 37:47Speaker 5: and having him healthy first full season is huge, And
- 37:51Speaker 5: they have one of the most athletic lineups because they
- 37:54Speaker 5: all were shortstops at one point in their career except
- 37:57Speaker 5: for Meggie who Miggie little known fact second place rookie
- 38:03Speaker 5: of the year. Does anybody know Scott Do you know
- 38:06Speaker 5: who he lost to when he was second place Rookie
- 38:09Speaker 5: of the Year?
- 38:09Speaker 1: I do not.
- 38:10Speaker 2: What was that twenty seventeen.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Eighteen eighteen.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Woh, so that's a good second, that's a very nice
- 38:21Speaker 2: second place. Yeah, he was highly touted for a while.
- 38:23Speaker 2: I remember back then, Oh the Yankees would never trade
- 38:27Speaker 2: and du harr and then he kind of journeyman. And
- 38:30Speaker 2: last year you know how many had bats did he
- 38:33Speaker 2: end up getting Let's see three? I mean, put together
- 38:38Speaker 2: nice numbers last year, especially when he ends up with Cincinnati.
- 38:42Speaker 2: But I mean, this is a dude that should rake
- 38:44Speaker 2: against left handed pitching, can still give you good at
- 38:46Speaker 2: bats against right handed pitching. I remember one of the
- 38:48Speaker 2: stories I read about him last year was how pictures
- 38:50Speaker 2: were getting away with first picked strikes against him. You know,
- 38:53Speaker 2: he's one of those wait for a strike guys. He
- 38:55Speaker 2: got rid of that, started blitzing a little bit more
- 38:58Speaker 2: earlier and counts this a talented guy. And he's entering
- 39:00Speaker 2: his age thirty one season. You think that he's been
- 39:02Speaker 2: around forever just because we've talked about him forever, But
- 39:05Speaker 2: entering his age thirty one season should be a nice
- 39:07Speaker 2: solid bat addition and not a negative on slug. I mean,
- 39:11Speaker 2: if anything, he might be a tick above average on
- 39:14Speaker 2: slug depends what you're looking at. At least average slug.
- 39:17Speaker 5: No doubles. He's a big doubles guy. The biggest thing
- 39:20Speaker 5: that I think that I think hurt him because he's
- 39:23Speaker 5: got a nice flat swing that controls the zone and
- 39:26Speaker 5: he makes a lot of contact. He's going to be
- 39:28Speaker 5: a low on base percentage guy. The biggest thing for
- 39:31Speaker 5: him is, well, he hurt his shoulder. I don't think
- 39:35Speaker 5: that power ever really came back consistently for him.
- 39:38Speaker 1: I think his rookie.
- 39:39Speaker 5: Year, I think he hit like twenty some homers, twenty
- 39:43Speaker 5: seven homers, forty seven doubles. Like that's big slug, Like
- 39:49Speaker 5: that is that slug that is like whoa, this guy's like,
- 39:53Speaker 5: this guy's going to be a multi year All Star.
- 39:56Speaker 5: His shoulder injury, I think, really really hurt him, and
- 40:01Speaker 5: it was one of those things that now he's redeveloped
- 40:04Speaker 5: himself as you know that like platoon advantage guy, the
- 40:08Speaker 5: ability to he plays hard like he's he's shifted to.
- 40:13Speaker 5: I think he shifted to mostly to the outfield, if
- 40:15Speaker 5: I'm not mistaken, because he was a third base when
- 40:18Speaker 5: he came.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Up outfield and slash. I don't want him in the
- 40:21Speaker 2: outfield every day, honestly, But I'll get to the.
- 40:23Speaker 5: Hi good good signing, good signing to add to the
- 40:28Speaker 5: depth of this team.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, let's speed through. Just quick hitter Jose A.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Orchty signs with the Pirates during the show. That looks
- 40:36Speaker 2: like about a year and I think maybe a million
- 40:38Speaker 2: and a half bucks for him. So instead of Fromber
- 40:42Speaker 2: they go to another former Houston astro and Jose Rachidi.
- 40:45Speaker 2: He's battled some injuries and under performance and all that
- 40:48Speaker 2: depth rotation piece for the Pirates, and maybe this means
- 40:53Speaker 2: the Pirates are still dancing in the trade waters and
- 40:56Speaker 2: they end up dealing away another one of their pitchers.
- 40:59Speaker 2: That's been the way that they've mostly acquired offense. We'll
- 41:02Speaker 2: see if that continues. That's how they were able to
- 41:05Speaker 2: land Password, That's how they were able to land Brandon Lao.
- 41:09Speaker 2: They've only signed one big free agent I guess too technically, right,
- 41:14Speaker 2: who is the reliever they signed? They signed a reliever
- 41:17Speaker 2: that I'm forgetting right now? Is it Sodo Gregory Soto?
- 41:20Speaker 2: And then they signed Ryan O'Hearn. Yeah, So they just
- 41:25Speaker 2: haven't had a lot of success on the free agent
- 41:26Speaker 2: water because they're sending out the same offer as everyone else.
- 41:29Speaker 2: But good for them to get Erkiti.
- 41:32Speaker 5: I think another one one thing real quick talking about
- 41:35Speaker 5: getting a bat for the Pirates. If you're a Pirates fan,
- 41:39Speaker 5: like I s Triolo's not a bad I mean, Jared
- 41:42Speaker 5: Triolo's not a bad player, Like can he be an
- 41:46Speaker 5: everyday third baseman? Yeah, and like he brings a lot
- 41:51Speaker 5: of value. So maybe that's why the Pirates maybe aren't
- 41:54Speaker 5: saying Okay, we're willing to go that extra money for Suarez.
- 41:58Speaker 5: We're willing to go because they think he's going to
- 42:01Speaker 5: be in everyday third basement or is his value being
- 42:04Speaker 5: able to bounce around the infield. But when you if
- 42:08Speaker 5: you have Connor Griffin, you have Brandon Low, you have
- 42:12Speaker 5: you have O'Hearn at first base, a utility player is
- 42:17Speaker 5: less and less valuable when you have dudes that play
- 42:19Speaker 5: one hundred scheduled to play one hundred and sixty two
- 42:22Speaker 5: games in a season. Soolo's Treolo is a good player.
- 42:26Speaker 5: If you delve into what he does, he is a
- 42:28Speaker 5: good player. Is that bat available to take to make
- 42:33Speaker 5: it an upgrade over him
