- 0:46Speaker 1: ESPN is our special guest. He'll talk about chicken Palm,
- 0:49Speaker 1: the Buci Overtime Challenge, and hy He eats a bucket
- 0:52Speaker 1: at KFC at least once a year. We'll dive into
- 0:54Speaker 1: those topics and others. But first, JD was a heck
- 0:57Speaker 1: of a time. Happy Thanksgiving, by the way, my friend,
- 0:59Speaker 1: all three Canadians here, Happy Thanksgiving. I hate when people
- 1:01Speaker 1: always say Happy Canadian Thanksgiving.
- 1:03Speaker 2: We're Canadian. You say Canadian Thanksgiving. We are Canadian.
- 1:06Speaker 1: In Toronto on Monday, Doubleheader Leaf's Red Wings Leave said
- 1:10Speaker 1: a little too much Turkey little lethargic effort, although they
- 1:12Speaker 1: outshot to Tray forty two to seventeen.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Oh they dominated him.
- 1:15Speaker 2: They did, as.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Paul Bisonette, our buddy of course former guest Scop said,
- 1:19Speaker 1: they got out golded Cam Talbot was fantastic and then
- 1:22Speaker 1: the Blue Jays land egg as well. So Toronto goes
- 1:24Speaker 1: oh for two. But it was nice to be back
- 1:27Speaker 1: home at least for Thanksgiving. Just to thought first and
- 1:30Speaker 1: the Leafs and the Red Wings. Interesting working with Chris
- 1:32Speaker 1: Pronger and Bizz. Thanks to you with the introduction because
- 1:34Speaker 1: he had never met me before and kept mentioning how
- 1:37Speaker 1: much I look at Chris Chellio's without fail by the way,
- 1:39Speaker 1: after business like, no, seriously, you do look like Jelly's
- 1:41Speaker 1: like thanks, go to the bathroom. Guy comes up to
- 1:43Speaker 1: me because I just want to tell you. You know,
- 1:44Speaker 1: my dad's a huge Red Wings fan, like Ia, you know,
- 1:46Speaker 1: so you know I grew up watching a big fan.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I'm like, uh huh.
- 1:49Speaker 1: And he goes said, do you still play? I'm like, yeah,
- 1:50Speaker 1: recreation a little bit. He's O yah, I goes, do
- 1:52Speaker 1: you miss it? I said, Now, I had a great career.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I did everything I needed to so I'm really happy
- 1:54Speaker 1: that thanks. You give me a familyes like, can I
- 1:56Speaker 1: get a picture of no pri go? Can you tell
- 1:57Speaker 1: that over there? His name was Paul Bisonette. Just tell
- 1:59Speaker 1: him what a big fan you are of mine. Because
- 2:01Speaker 1: he thinks all the old guys don't get much play.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He's like, sure, no problem. Later on business, dude, the
- 2:06Speaker 1: good though you're jelling you. It's like, yeah, and so.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Does that guy over there too, Another guy big Red
- 2:11Speaker 2: Wigs fan, loved your work. I'm like, it's great.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Keep the Chilliers train going as far as the Leafs
- 2:16Speaker 1: are concerned. Because Chris Pronger made this point to me,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I'm wanna get your thoughts on it. Prongs looks at
- 2:20Speaker 1: the offense because you said to me, hey, it's a
- 2:22Speaker 1: heavier team. Maybe it's a better chance with Craig Ruby
- 2:25Speaker 1: more than their mold. So I made that point to
- 2:27Speaker 1: Prongs and he goes on defense. I agree, they're definitely heavier.
- 2:30Speaker 1: One concern with defense, which is your forte He said.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Every single one of these guys is in their thirties.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I said, okay, so their experience he said yeah, But
- 2:37Speaker 1: I always like what a couple of young guys to
- 2:39Speaker 1: offset that because maybe veteran legs get heavier as the
- 2:42Speaker 1: season progresses.
- 2:42Speaker 2: That's one concern they are heavier.
- 2:44Speaker 1: He agree with you, but he said up front, I
- 2:45Speaker 1: don't think they're particularly heavy. Matthewny's is baby doesn't play big,
- 2:49Speaker 1: Matthew doesn't play big, et cetera.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Agree or disagree.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I mean, Matthew Nys plays heavy. He doesn't run guys over,
- 2:54Speaker 3: but he's heavy on the puck. The fuck is this
- 2:57Speaker 3: guy talking.
- 2:58Speaker 1: About point counterpoint? Because I said, do the Leaves have
- 3:03Speaker 1: enough offensive without Martin? He's like, you're expecting a lot
- 3:06Speaker 1: of Easton Cowen. I go, well, the guy was unbelievable.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Ohl. I know it's a different league, but yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Great he played. He played great last game, great pass,
- 3:13Speaker 3: great L's past Austin. I mean, listen, do I think
- 3:16Speaker 3: this is a way different team than when Martin was there?
- 3:19Speaker 3: One hundred percent? Do I like the way this team
- 3:21Speaker 3: is built?
- 3:22Speaker 2: I do?
- 3:22Speaker 3: I think this is Craig Barube's DNA all over it,
- 3:25Speaker 3: and I think he'll get the most out of this
- 3:27Speaker 3: specific lineup. Now, do I think this is a team?
- 3:31Speaker 3: You know, when you say heavy, a guy like Prongs
- 3:33Speaker 3: might think, you know, and I love the guy and
- 3:35Speaker 3: he's a very intelligent guy and Hall of Famer, better
- 3:38Speaker 3: player than I ever was. But you know, when you
- 3:40Speaker 3: when you define heavy, doesn't necessarily mean that you're running
- 3:44Speaker 3: guys over, but you're heavy on the puck. And Matthews
- 3:46Speaker 3: is heavy on the puck, scores the most most of
- 3:48Speaker 3: his goals in front of the net. John Tavares heavy
- 3:51Speaker 3: on the puck. Nick Wah heavy on the puck. Nice,
- 3:54Speaker 3: Bobby McMahon, Bobby McMahon, heavy on the puck. I believe
- 3:58Speaker 3: he scored two goals last game as well. Heavy on
- 4:01Speaker 3: the buck. Dakota Joshua struggled a little bit out of
- 4:04Speaker 3: the gate, but a guy that I think, come playoff
- 4:05Speaker 3: time is going to be very important for this team.
- 4:08Speaker 3: I think Brubay will get something out of him. And
- 4:10Speaker 3: then you got and then Austin Matthews. You say what
- 4:13Speaker 3: you want about Austin math. Yes he doesn't hit, Yes
- 4:15Speaker 3: he's not in the scrums, but he's a heavy player.
- 4:19Speaker 3: He's a heavy player, got on the board twice. He's
- 4:22Speaker 3: heavy skills, so and yeah, maybe in the back end.
- 4:25Speaker 3: The back end always worries me. Anytime there's a back
- 4:28Speaker 3: end that has Chris Tannev on it will always worry
- 4:30Speaker 3: me because and you can quote me and clip this
- 4:33Speaker 3: for social media, I think Chris tan Yeah, it's true.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I think Chris Tannev is a fantastic defenseman. But it
- 4:41Speaker 3: always worries me that he's injury prone. Like I just
- 4:43Speaker 3: feel like he takes so much damage during the year
- 4:46Speaker 3: in the playoffs that eventually the train goes off the tracks.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And if he could stay healthy and I could guarantee
- 4:53Speaker 3: his health, what that's impossible to do. I love their
- 4:57Speaker 3: decor but that's always the case, you know. So do
- 5:00Speaker 3: I think they can last his decorps? I think so.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I think the way they play and the defensive structure
- 5:05Speaker 3: they have can definitely do it. But there's there are
- 5:08Speaker 3: question marks. But I do still think this team has
- 5:10Speaker 3: made for the playoffs. They got to just get there.
- 5:13Speaker 3: It depends where they get there, but they just got
- 5:15Speaker 3: to make it there. I think they'll struggle a little
- 5:16Speaker 3: bit more in season than they have in years past,
- 5:20Speaker 3: and they probably won't get a guy that will eclipse
- 5:22Speaker 3: ninety points, but I think they're going to be better
- 5:25Speaker 3: equipped for the playoffs.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Red Wings take the home and home the leaves to
- 5:28Speaker 1: bounce back though, as you alluded to, so who knows
- 5:30Speaker 1: how things will transpire there in Leafland. As far as
- 5:32Speaker 1: early season overreactions, Pavel Dorfi have five goals in his
- 5:36Speaker 1: first three games.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Vegas starts out two to zero to two.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Justin Brazo to your three million dollar contract with Pittsburgh.
- 5:42Speaker 1: He's got four goals in four games, helping the Penguins
- 5:44Speaker 1: surprising two and two record.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Only many people think much of the Penguins.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Champion Panthers were three to one without Barkoff Kachuk. We're
- 5:50Speaker 1: taping this wins to night.
- 5:50Speaker 3: They did three and two.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Red Wings, Yeah, three to two, the two for to one.
- 5:54Speaker 2: The Bruins started three and no.
- 5:56Speaker 1: They lost to close some Monday night against the Lightning
- 5:58Speaker 1: Lightning d allowing sixteen goals in their first four games,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and the Seattle Kraken.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So I think you and I both do not expect much.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Of that's gonna go back. Don't worry about that.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Opening two and oh allowing just two goals in those
- 6:10Speaker 1: games for losing an ot in Montreal Tuesday night.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You can jump on.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Any of those, but I'd like to start with making
- 6:15Speaker 1: fun of the Rangers, because they're shut out in three
- 6:17Speaker 1: straight home games.
- 6:18Speaker 2: That is the first team in hockey history to open
- 6:21Speaker 2: a season doing that.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think I had them JD like maybe as an
- 6:24Speaker 1: eight se like a walker potentially. I was not expecting
- 6:27Speaker 1: no goals for Selly's team at home.
- 6:30Speaker 3: They have no goals for you, dah Ranges lose, Yes, yes,
- 6:36Speaker 3: Nah Ranges lose. I have some stats because I'm a
- 6:39Speaker 3: little bit of an analytics nerd now that I'm in
- 6:41Speaker 3: the thing. So with the Rangers, Yeah, you know, I
- 6:44Speaker 3: was looking. I said, how come they're not scoring at home?
- 6:47Speaker 3: You know, the roads different. Maybe you talk about matchups,
- 6:50Speaker 3: you can talk about their travel, but I just think
- 6:53Speaker 3: it's been a trend that, you know, their puck management
- 6:56Speaker 3: hasn't been great to start the season, specifically breaking out
- 6:59Speaker 3: the puck. You know, their even strength break breakout success
- 7:03Speaker 3: in the bottom third of the league. They're even string
- 7:06Speaker 3: zone exit success rate, so how many times in ten
- 7:09Speaker 3: dumpins do they successfully exit the zone is bottom third
- 7:13Speaker 3: in the league.
- 7:14Speaker 2: They are.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Possession time against, they're giving bottom third in the league
- 7:19Speaker 3: and offensive zone possession against, so spending too much time
- 7:23Speaker 3: in their own in because they're not breaking out the
- 7:24Speaker 3: puck clean. So they're not having a good transition, they're
- 7:27Speaker 3: not getting on the rush enough. This is a team
- 7:30Speaker 3: with their skill guys up front. We want to talk
- 7:31Speaker 3: about a team that's not heavy. This team's not heavy.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Regardless if they have Edstrom and Ramp and Coolly, this
- 7:38Speaker 3: is not a heavy team. This is a team that
- 7:40Speaker 3: likes to play a little bit of skill, skill and thrill.
- 7:43Speaker 3: They're pressured de zone dumping recoveries with a clean exit
- 7:48Speaker 3: no point, no bottom third and their team entry denial success.
- 7:51Speaker 3: So basically when a team is trying to enter the zone,
- 7:53Speaker 3: they're bottom third in the league. So all that goes
- 7:56Speaker 3: to tell me is that they're not creating enough transition.
- 7:58Speaker 3: They're not creating enough offense off of the transition, which
- 8:01Speaker 3: is was their calling card. Now they're playing more sound
- 8:04Speaker 3: defensive game. They're giving up less than they had last
- 8:09Speaker 3: year in the slot, which is a big issue for them,
- 8:12Speaker 3: But they're just not generating enough off of that and
- 8:14Speaker 3: it's a little bit too tiki tak and they're not
- 8:16Speaker 3: getting to the net. So they're not getting enough offense
- 8:19Speaker 3: off of the transition. They're not getting to the net.
- 8:21Speaker 3: So that is the problem. That is the issue for me.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Does it make me nervous? I didn't have the Rangers
- 8:28Speaker 3: making the playoffs this year, didn't. I wasn't high on them.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I think Adam Fox had a bounce back year this year,
- 8:34Speaker 3: which is kind of already coming to fruition with Gaverkov.
- 8:38Speaker 3: But I don't think this is a playoff team by
- 8:39Speaker 3: any stretch of the imagination. I don't think they have
- 8:41Speaker 3: enough talent or anything. They have a great goalie, but again,
- 8:44Speaker 3: Mike Sullivan's not enough to convince me this team can
- 8:47Speaker 3: make it in a very depleted metropolitan division that is
- 8:51Speaker 3: pretty fucking junk if you asked me. So. Other than
- 8:55Speaker 3: the top two, two or.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Three teens, the Devils, that's about it.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I mean, I think Carolina, Washington, and then I think
- 9:01Speaker 3: it's up in the air for the third spot. And
- 9:03Speaker 3: there's been a couple teams that Pittsburgh that we were
- 9:06Speaker 3: kind of all surprised at that's playing some good hockey,
- 9:08Speaker 3: The Devils, Columbus, those are the teams that are kind
- 9:12Speaker 3: of all going to fight for the third spot. But
- 9:13Speaker 3: I don't have the Rangers anywhere near that. I have
- 9:15Speaker 3: them doubt.
- 9:17Speaker 2: So tell let's go say tell the further point.
- 9:19Speaker 4: How about Chris Cryder, Oh, four goals in three games.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Four goals in three games. As I mean, they got
- 9:26Speaker 4: to work on the defense. Decks need to work on
- 9:28Speaker 4: that defense. But they're scoring goals and Chris Crider, who
- 9:32Speaker 4: is mister Ranger for years, more than a decade, is
- 9:35Speaker 4: leading the way. They could they could use some of
- 9:38Speaker 4: his snarl. It seems in New York at MSG thedeed,
- 9:42Speaker 4: their blue.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Line got worse.
- 9:44Speaker 4: They have guys like Nika and Panaren who look kind of,
- 9:48Speaker 4: I don't know, not completely engaged. Panaren is a UFA
- 9:51Speaker 4: at the end of the season. I mean, do they
- 9:53Speaker 4: talk with him about a trade potentially if this season
- 9:56Speaker 4: just goes into.
- 9:57Speaker 3: The dumber immediately? Yep, agreed.
- 10:00Speaker 5: So it's he's looking rough. It's looking rough.
- 10:02Speaker 4: I think, you know, the the Islanders have gone off
- 10:05Speaker 4: to a worse start, so you know, the Rangers fans
- 10:08Speaker 4: can at least, you know, I guess lean on that
- 10:10Speaker 4: a little bit. But it's not looking good. They just
- 10:13Speaker 4: they turned the team over to j T. Miller and
- 10:15Speaker 4: so far the results haven't been that great.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think Jay, I don't think JT is
- 10:21Speaker 3: the fall I thought I was with you the whole
- 10:22Speaker 3: way until you fucking bashed JT. Miller. He didn't bash me,
- 10:25Speaker 3: just buried the question for you guys. Is Patrick of
- 10:28Speaker 3: Wah the coach for the Islanders right now? Heteres think
- 10:32Speaker 3: about it. We asked the herd hitting questions on unscripted list.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Is he the guy? I don't think he's the guy.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I love Patrick Wah. He's a fiery coach.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I love the passion, obviously in junior. Maybe he's an
- 10:44Speaker 1: advisory role if he's a g m ish No, probably
- 10:47Speaker 1: not not this love not the HL as a coach. No,
- 10:49Speaker 1: Like I've seen enough and it wasn't like it was
- 10:52Speaker 1: like a couple years.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But no, I saw moments of flashes.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Probably a palias to deal with, which isn't that surprising
- 10:56Speaker 1: against Patrick Wall I'm sure he's got a healthy ego.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Whatever happens him and lou Luke gets forced out, now
- 11:00Speaker 1: it's wasted heem. I'm like, no, they're not very good
- 11:02Speaker 1: and he's gonna be out of a job soon aroundt
- 11:03Speaker 1: later out.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Matthew darsh gets it done. Tal you
- 11:09Speaker 3: can't play Matthew Shaffer twenty six minutes to night. This
- 11:11Speaker 3: poor kid, I think.
- 11:14Speaker 5: They have the goaltending, They're gonna keep it tight.
- 11:18Speaker 4: They're gonna keep it tight because of their goaltending, and
- 11:20Speaker 4: there's no who's their go to score up front?
- 11:23Speaker 5: Who's the guy making plays up front?
- 11:25Speaker 4: Right now, they're relying on Matthew Shaffer to make plays
- 11:27Speaker 4: for them offensively.
- 11:28Speaker 5: I mean, how long is that gonna last?
- 11:30Speaker 3: Supposed to be Barzel? Supposed to be Barzel and he
- 11:33Speaker 3: hasn't pissed a drop and I was high on him
- 11:36Speaker 3: to start the ear So this guy's gonna have a
- 11:38Speaker 3: start to the year and I'm hoping for it. I
- 11:41Speaker 3: think he's such a great player when he's when he's
- 11:43Speaker 3: moving and grooving and healthy. But I don't know if
- 11:45Speaker 3: Patrick was the guy for this team. I don't know.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't think so. But it is
- 11:51Speaker 3: tough sledding Islanders Rangers this year. Tough sledding as tell us.
- 11:56Speaker 1: About the Rangers as the looking rough Someone say, Lindy Rough.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Let's talk a little Sabers. Right now, they own the
- 12:01Speaker 1: league's longest active playoff drut fourteen seasons. That's tie with
- 12:05Speaker 1: the New York Jets for the worst among all the
- 12:06Speaker 1: four major sports. Three straight losses by combined score of
- 12:09Speaker 1: ten to two. Lindy Ruff publicly called out his team
- 12:12Speaker 1: after Game two. He also knows forward Josh Norris out
- 12:15Speaker 1: for an extended period of time and a key return
- 12:18Speaker 1: on the Dylan Cousins deadline deal the Ottawa last season,
- 12:20Speaker 1: he's been injury prone.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Having said that, JD how about tonight against the Ottawa
- 12:23Speaker 2: Centers eight to four.
- 12:24Speaker 1: The Sabers pumped him and tough news in Ottawa Brady
- 12:27Speaker 1: could Chuck suffering a hand injury Monday night on a
- 12:30Speaker 1: cross check by Roman Yosi.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He's out for four weeks. That hurts.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a tome. These are two teams that you're
- 12:36Speaker 3: expecting to one build on last year from Ottawa's perspective,
- 12:43Speaker 3: and Buffalo just to do something, take one positive step forward,
- 12:48Speaker 3: and they did that. I like the response. I love
- 12:51Speaker 3: the response tonight. I was on the network yesterday and
- 12:56Speaker 3: they asked me, am I concerned about the Buffalo Sabers
- 12:58Speaker 3: And I said no. And they asked me why they're
- 13:01Speaker 3: zero and three? Why why say you know what? I said?
- 13:05Speaker 2: What's that?
- 13:05Speaker 3: I said? Are we surprised? Are we surprised that the
- 13:08Speaker 3: Buffalo Savers are floundering this early in the season. No,
- 13:12Speaker 3: I am not. I am not surprised, but you know what,
- 13:16Speaker 3: I'm surprised the response tonight. Great response by the whole team.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Ryan McCleod leading the way two goals. I absolutely loved it.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I thought it was great eight to four. Now the
- 13:28Speaker 3: Ottawa Senators, Brady Kachuk's gohan, your captain, your leader, your
- 13:32Speaker 3: emotional leader as well as your physical leader. Somebody needs
- 13:36Speaker 3: to grab the bull by the horns here and really
- 13:38Speaker 3: pick this up. Because I'm looking at Tim Stutzla. He
- 13:42Speaker 3: needs to become that game breaker that we know and
- 13:44Speaker 3: love and think he can become. So all those things
- 13:47Speaker 3: to say, great job by great job by the Buffalo Savers,
- 13:52Speaker 3: but it brings me to a point. I want to
- 13:53Speaker 3: ask you, guys, because you look at the Detroit Redwicks
- 13:56Speaker 3: game one of the season, they're dog water. Tom mccollin
- 14:00Speaker 3: comes up and just absolutely buries them. They now have
- 14:05Speaker 3: rattled off three wins. It is not too early to
- 14:09Speaker 3: get on your team about the details of the game.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Don't wait till game two, three, five, seven. You get
- 14:14Speaker 3: on those guys right away because you have allid training camp,
- 14:17Speaker 3: all the summerhould. This is when the good teams you
- 14:21Speaker 3: can steal some games, because later in the season, when
- 14:24Speaker 3: everybody's on their game, you're not gonna be able to
- 14:26Speaker 3: steal those games from the good teams. This is the
- 14:29Speaker 3: time to bank points early. And I love what Todd
- 14:32Speaker 3: mccollin did. No guff, no huff, no muss, no fuss
- 14:35Speaker 3: comes out buries the team. They respond. Now they've played
- 14:39Speaker 3: three sound games. They did get some great goalton against Toronto,
- 14:42Speaker 3: but they go on and they beat Florida. They beat Florida,
- 14:45Speaker 3: play a sound hockey game, and it's a lot to like.
- 14:49Speaker 3: So like Lenny Rough waiting until game three, no bury
- 14:52Speaker 3: these guys right away. It's not acceptable this early in
- 14:54Speaker 3: the season. You got to get on them early. Got
- 14:57Speaker 3: to keep guys accountable. Now you can't waste too many
- 14:59Speaker 3: bullets and yell at them every single day. But did
- 15:04Speaker 3: respect the coming out and screaming at the guys after
- 15:08Speaker 3: one game in the season. What say you, my colleagues.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Tough start for John Gibson, by the way, your first
- 15:13Speaker 1: game five goals in thirteen shots. He gets hot, bounce
- 15:16Speaker 1: like that's tough when you're like I looking to make
- 15:17Speaker 1: an impact. You're like, no, but Cam Talbot's been fantastic,
- 15:20Speaker 1: and I'm with you. You've got to be very guarded
- 15:21Speaker 1: and careful on how you're criticizing your team. And as
- 15:24Speaker 1: you said, especially when you're the new coach in New
- 15:26Speaker 1: Boston Town, you need more accountability.
- 15:28Speaker 2: It's not Tom McClelland on the hot seats. We all
- 15:30Speaker 2: know it' Steve Eiserman.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I mean year nine of the iSER plan, like they know,
- 15:34Speaker 1: if they don't make the playoffs this year, shit's gonna change.
- 15:36Speaker 1: By the way, speaking at a chuck, he's having a
- 15:38Speaker 1: second opinion to determine if surgery will be required for
- 15:41Speaker 1: the right arm slash risk injury. That's directly from the
- 15:43Speaker 1: senator's owner. So I know it as we say, all
- 15:45Speaker 1: four weeks. But that's not necessarily.
- 15:47Speaker 2: A guarantee to more upbeat news involving Canadian teams.
- 15:50Speaker 1: How about the lane train. Let's go Montreal Canadians. Jeff Gordon,
- 15:54Speaker 1: old colleague at NHL Newberk. He gets an extension, You
- 15:57Speaker 1: get an extension. Ken Hughes is getting an extension. Let's
- 15:59Speaker 1: go kN Hughes is a gentleman jer Obviously, Gortz is
- 16:02Speaker 1: the executive VP and Layne Hunts.
- 16:04Speaker 2: How about eight years seventy point eight million dollars. I'm rich, bitch,
- 16:11Speaker 2: eight point eight five a year, which is just below
- 16:14Speaker 2: the nine million per year fellow defenseman Luke Cues is getting.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I mean Hudson's numbers.
- 16:19Speaker 1: JD's sixty six points eighty two games as a rookie
- 16:21Speaker 1: last season sixty assists tied Larry Murphy's record for.
- 16:24Speaker 2: A rookie defenseman. First practice for signed the big deal.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Hudson's mob by his teammates although he's picking up the
- 16:29Speaker 1: ten pm steak dinner in Montreal.
- 16:32Speaker 2: This is fabulous news for the Habs.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Great piece of tidy work by Jeff Gordon and Ken Hughes.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I mean they got their core together up until twenty thirty.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I think so they are locked up. The window, ladies
- 16:48Speaker 3: and gentlemen is firmly open. TikTok goes to Stanley Cup clock.
- 16:53Speaker 3: They need to win. This court needs to win, and
- 16:55Speaker 3: the time to win is now? Is did he now? Ditmial?
- 16:58Speaker 3: There's no waiting anymore. They're on the hunt. Tal. I
- 17:01Speaker 3: know you're excited. I know your heart is Greek porn
- 17:04Speaker 3: right now, Hardest sheet rock talk to me baby.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Love the lane trend and he set up the winning
- 17:13Speaker 4: goal by cold Caffield in overtime in his first game after.
- 17:18Speaker 3: What'd you call? What'd you what'd you call him?
- 17:22Speaker 4: That's my cold Coffield is Come on, Colin, That's what
- 17:26Speaker 4: I call him. But yeah, the the that whole crew
- 17:29Speaker 4: that's basically grown up together with his team, they're all
- 17:32Speaker 4: locked in. You got to assume that, you know, Demeatov
- 17:34Speaker 4: will get locked in in the next year or two.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Long term, it's do we.
- 17:41Speaker 5: Do we have a consensus on how it's pronounced?
- 17:43Speaker 3: I mean, fuck, I mean doesn't doesn't sound right to.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Say the Russian kid anyways, it's it's an exciting Russians
- 17:51Speaker 4: so racist tells racist.
- 17:54Speaker 5: You know, look, I I don't know if you've seen it.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I've I've been seeing some leafs fans being very publicly
- 18:02Speaker 4: upset that things are working out with this re the
- 18:04Speaker 4: Montreal I think they feel like, you know, this Core
- 18:07Speaker 4: four era is now over and they're looking looking east
- 18:10Speaker 4: at Montreal and seeing what they're doing and the going
- 18:11Speaker 4: We kind of want that, we want to build around
- 18:13Speaker 4: a bigger core of young talent, and that's.
- 18:16Speaker 5: What they happens They've done a great job.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Marty San Luis is turning into an absolute icon in
- 18:21Speaker 4: that city. By the way, as a coach, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 4: they haven't had like he's He is a major ambassador
- 18:28Speaker 4: for the team.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Right now and I can't argue with what he's doing.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Three and one so far. It's a long season, but
- 18:35Speaker 4: the lane train is here to stay.
- 18:37Speaker 3: I love the lane train. Speaking of trains that are
- 18:41Speaker 3: getting kind of derailed in the goalie position. Sorry, I
- 18:44Speaker 3: got a segue because I want to ask you guys.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Las Vegas Golden Knights Aiden Hill gets hurt last night.
- 18:49Speaker 3: He's been fairly pedestrian to start the season. A lot
- 18:52Speaker 3: of news about Carter Hart going around, Yes, a lot
- 18:55Speaker 3: of news Vegas.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I'm here in I heard Vegas in Carolina at the
- 18:59Speaker 2: start of the year.
- 19:01Speaker 3: But I heard it's like it's common, like they're announcing it.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Like I heard. This is like no joke. No, he's
- 19:09Speaker 3: coming to play.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Do it you a good goalie? Period? You need a
- 19:12Speaker 2: good goalie?
- 19:14Speaker 3: I mean yeah, he and I think.
- 19:16Speaker 2: You put it well.
- 19:16Speaker 1: You couldn't play for a Canadian team because of the
- 19:18Speaker 1: controversy Hockey Canada, et cetera.
- 19:20Speaker 2: But in Las Vegas, be like, who gives a shit?
- 19:22Speaker 1: This guy was pretty good on the Flyers, has promised
- 19:24Speaker 1: the potential sabbatical.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Not guilty, he's back in a court of law, exonerated.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Let's go the justice system. Hate it or love it,
- 19:33Speaker 3: it's what's done is done. I'm just crazy. Can only
- 19:37Speaker 3: imagine if he signs and they win the Cup? Oh
- 19:42Speaker 3: my god, is there going to be It's gonna be crazy.
- 19:47Speaker 2: One more thoughtful we get to Bootie. It's specific to you, JD.
- 19:50Speaker 2: The tal is tailoring this.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Your old boss isn't a very public person, but Shark's
- 19:54Speaker 1: owner pronouncer Hasso Platner.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Okay, rare public. He uh says that he doesn't expect his.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Team to be in the running for Penns super fresh
- 20:05Speaker 1: Gavin McKenna, who's expected to be the top pick in
- 20:07Speaker 1: nex summer's draft. Plattner said, I hope we don't have
- 20:09Speaker 1: to go for McKenna. No McKenna here now. The Sharks
- 20:13Speaker 1: have been exciting team to watch. They've lot sixteen goals
- 20:15Speaker 1: in their first three games. What are your expectations for
- 20:18Speaker 1: your team?
- 20:19Speaker 3: Listen has go back to the golf course. No, I
- 20:25Speaker 3: I mean I appreciate his enthusiasm. I was very excited
- 20:31Speaker 3: for them to start the year, and then they had
- 20:33Speaker 3: two opportunities. We talk about banking points early. They should
- 20:36Speaker 3: have been two to zher going into last night against Carolina,
- 20:40Speaker 3: and they got absolutely blown out of the building against Carolina,
- 20:42Speaker 3: like that was a good hockey team and they got
- 20:45Speaker 3: worked over. Their young guys did not look good. So
- 20:50Speaker 3: I think there is a possibility. I think they're still
- 20:53Speaker 3: figuring it out. I think I'm a little worried right
- 20:57Speaker 3: now the way they're deploying the lines. I think they
- 21:01Speaker 3: have more talent than they've had in the last few years.
- 21:05Speaker 3: And I'm just kind of worried about like the overthinking
- 21:08Speaker 3: it as a coach, and you know, you got all
- 21:11Speaker 3: these these young guys and old guys, and you're trying
- 21:13Speaker 3: to play the old guys and not the young guys.
- 21:15Speaker 3: And you you know, Mike Career has brought in a
- 21:17Speaker 3: bunch more guys that are can play in the NHL,
- 21:20Speaker 3: and now there's like a decision to make and you're
- 21:23Speaker 3: almost shooting. You know, it's like you're the you know
- 21:25Speaker 3: you It's like you draft in fantasy football and you
- 21:28Speaker 3: draft this team that's very deep, but then you shoot
- 21:31Speaker 3: yourself on the foot every week because you sit the
- 21:33Speaker 3: wrong guy that goes off for twenty five points. And
- 21:36Speaker 3: then your team just lays an egg every night, and
- 21:38Speaker 3: then you just keep trying to Now you're just trying
- 21:40Speaker 3: to figure out what works, what works, and now it's
- 21:43Speaker 3: your zero to ten to start the season. So it's like,
- 21:47Speaker 3: I'm just a little worried about that. And it's no
- 21:49Speaker 3: knock on the coaching staff. I think it's a after
- 21:52Speaker 3: what happened last year in the calluses that they've kind
- 21:55Speaker 3: of created for themselves and and a lot of the
- 21:58Speaker 3: tough times they had. I think it's nerve wracking because
- 22:01Speaker 3: you want to get off to good start because I
- 22:03Speaker 3: think you have a better team on pay than you've
- 22:04Speaker 3: had in a years past. But who do you play?
- 22:07Speaker 3: Do you play your young guys? You play Misa, you
- 22:09Speaker 3: played Dickinson, they didn't have great games last game. Do
- 22:12Speaker 3: you put in the old guys? You know, what is it?
- 22:15Speaker 3: What's what's the way you're going? Are you rebuilding?
- 22:17Speaker 2: You know?
- 22:18Speaker 3: So I don't know what you guys think, but I'm
- 22:21Speaker 3: just worried about that. But I think HASO I mean,
- 22:24Speaker 3: don't rule out McKenna.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I love an impetress owner, but you're right. You gotta
- 22:27Speaker 1: be realistic and McKenna is the real deal. So it's okay, Like,
- 22:30Speaker 1: don't don't worry.
- 22:31Speaker 3: He struggled a bit, he's I think he. I think
- 22:34Speaker 3: he would serve him well to play two years in
- 22:36Speaker 3: the in college's interesting early on. I think a lot
- 22:40Speaker 3: of power play points five on five hasn't really dominated
- 22:43Speaker 3: the way uh as seventeen eighteen year old shit, So
- 22:49Speaker 3: take it for what it is. Unscripted fans don't come
- 22:52Speaker 3: for me, come for me in the comments. But yeah,
- 22:56Speaker 3: I think i'd reserve him for two years. So maybe
- 22:58Speaker 3: you want to get McKenna out and let him develop.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Come up, I was.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Gonna say, coming up next night, selling the script will
- 23:04Speaker 1: talk who truly loves college hockey, along with the BOCI
- 23:07Speaker 1: overtime challenge and early impressions of this hockey season.
- 23:09Speaker 2: That's right.
- 23:10Speaker 1: ESPN's John boucha Groz will ask him does he have
- 23:12Speaker 1: a thirty inch waist or not?
- 23:14Speaker 2: The answer after this, Our next guest is a beauty.
- 23:29Speaker 1: He's been an anchor and broadcaster at ESPN close to
- 23:31Speaker 1: three decades, covering all kinds of sports.
- 23:34Speaker 2: With special attention paid to hockey.
- 23:36Speaker 1: He can be seeing calling games in the studio throughout
- 23:38Speaker 1: this NHL season, and you also know him as the
- 23:41Speaker 1: man behind the Bucci Overtime Challenge, the great John Butcher
- 23:44Speaker 1: Grass Boots.
- 23:45Speaker 6: Great to see you, buddy, Good to be with you,
- 23:48Speaker 6: ad Man. A long way from ESPN News ten.
- 23:51Speaker 7: To a shift.
- 23:53Speaker 1: First time we ever met, you were doing the Noon
- 23:55Speaker 1: Sports Center and your first words to be figured out
- 23:57Speaker 1: the computer system. Yet that e NPS was a nightmare
- 24:00Speaker 1: in the first couple of days, right.
- 24:02Speaker 7: It was. Yeah, that noon to three was great. That
- 24:05Speaker 7: that was a great shift to do.
- 24:06Speaker 6: I was on the afternoon and back then, as you know,
- 24:09Speaker 6: there were that was really before social media. So actors
- 24:13Speaker 6: would come in and they would like push a movie.
- 24:15Speaker 6: They would do we call it a car wash, ESPN Radio,
- 24:18Speaker 6: ESPN Chat, you know, and whatever. And so one of
- 24:21Speaker 6: them was the Rock or Vince Vaughan. I got to
- 24:23Speaker 6: do so many cool things on that Noon to three shits. Yeah, man,
- 24:26Speaker 6: still haven't figured out the NPS.
- 24:28Speaker 1: You were great there, you and Chrismick Kendrick together and
- 24:30Speaker 1: you're always irreverent, would offer a humor. You've done that
- 24:33Speaker 1: throughout your career. I was so lucky we'd get to
- 24:35Speaker 1: work together. You were one of the few veteran anchors
- 24:38Speaker 1: that wouldn't take time off of the holidays, so that
- 24:40Speaker 1: late December Christmas Break, so to speak, eleven pm Sports Center,
- 24:43Speaker 1: it's me and Boochie.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Everybody else has gone.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Leevy, Linda, Neil and Stan, but you're there and getting
- 24:48Speaker 1: to work with the annoy a little bit. My favorite
- 24:49Speaker 1: parts was just talking hockey with you, and particularly the
- 24:52Speaker 1: overtime challenge, and it was amazing.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Guys.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Literally we'd be on the air, We're doing highlights that
- 24:56Speaker 1: could be college football, college basketball, and then butchering. Oh wait,
- 24:58Speaker 1: the Red Wings just went over time. Hang on a second,
- 25:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna send me this tweet. And part of what
- 25:02Speaker 1: I was so impressed by was this because so many
- 25:05Speaker 1: people are driven by money and monetary concerns, but you
- 25:07Speaker 1: did this literally out of like the soul of your
- 25:10Speaker 1: heart and all money being given a charity. I remember
- 25:12Speaker 1: you describing it to me, going brook, I have to
- 25:14Speaker 1: go home. I have to find these mailing addresses mail
- 25:17Speaker 1: this costs me money to do it.
- 25:20Speaker 6: Yeah, I get tied to these things and they and
- 25:22Speaker 6: they kind of take over me and kind of like
- 25:25Speaker 6: doing this podcast right now.
- 25:26Speaker 7: You know, I should be driving home, getting.
- 25:30Speaker 6: North, but here I am in an outlet mall in
- 25:32Speaker 6: a Stero, Florida, home of Gavin Brindley, Tom Tree, Tom
- 25:37Speaker 6: Trees and Sunshine. But yeah, but that that has been
- 25:40Speaker 6: really a blessing to make that connection with fans.
- 25:42Speaker 7: I can't believe it. So I thought by now people
- 25:45Speaker 7: would stop playing.
- 25:46Speaker 6: I wouldn't have to go mail hats and T shirts
- 25:49Speaker 6: at all ungodly hours.
- 25:50Speaker 7: But they're still doing it, I think about fifteen years later.
- 25:53Speaker 6: So uh, it's been a it's been a good run,
- 25:56Speaker 6: sug and I can't believe it's they're they're not buying
- 25:58Speaker 6: as much stuff as they used to be the first
- 26:00Speaker 6: time it really got going, and the T shirt became
- 26:03Speaker 6: kind of a fashion thing, which it does. Young people
- 26:05Speaker 6: come and go. It's disposable. I sold twenty thousand dollars
- 26:08Speaker 6: worth of T shirts out of my house. Wow, people
- 26:10Speaker 6: just sending me money. I know a website, yet they're
- 26:13Speaker 6: just sending me checks and cash and the mail. And
- 26:16Speaker 6: I'm mailing these white T shirts with hashtag bouci overtime challenged.
- 26:20Speaker 6: And now Elon doesn't even want hashtags. I guess it
- 26:24Speaker 6: messes up the computer system. I don't know, so he's
- 26:27Speaker 6: put me.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Out of business.
- 26:28Speaker 6: But uh no, but it's still you know, still had
- 26:30Speaker 6: the logo in the hats they trickle out the college
- 26:33Speaker 6: hockey stuff. Yeah, actually does better now than the bociot stuff.
- 26:36Speaker 6: People just want the free butcot t shirt. They don't
- 26:39Speaker 6: really want to buy it anymore.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Well, before we get into the NHL, I know you're,
- 26:43Speaker 3: like you said, a huge advocate for college hockey, you know,
- 26:46Speaker 3: with the nil the new transfer rules and Gavin mcckenna, like,
- 26:50Speaker 3: you know, what's your take on the college hockey and
- 26:53Speaker 3: in words headed right now?
- 26:55Speaker 6: Yeah, well it's never been more exciting, I tell you that,
- 26:57Speaker 6: right now, it's never had you know, a bigger Q
- 26:59Speaker 6: rating or whatever, because this definitely has infused the sport
- 27:05Speaker 6: with some obviously attention, some star power, and now it's
- 27:09Speaker 6: always had star power.
- 27:10Speaker 2: You know.
- 27:10Speaker 6: Jack Eichel came to the college hockey and we knew
- 27:14Speaker 6: he was gonna be the you know, the first or
- 27:16Speaker 6: second pick of the draft. He came out with you know,
- 27:18Speaker 6: Connor McDavid, so we knew he'd be the second pick.
- 27:20Speaker 6: So he came as an underage guy who was draft
- 27:22Speaker 6: eligible his first year. So we've had that before, and
- 27:25Speaker 6: we've had very high picks before, but just to have
- 27:28Speaker 6: multiple this time and to have someone like him, it
- 27:31Speaker 6: got because of the story. It got attention, even though,
- 27:33Speaker 6: like I said, it's happened before. But yeah, I'm doing
- 27:36Speaker 6: a BU Michigan State game this Friday night. ESPN two
- 27:40Speaker 6: full raps at the were going to a full round
- 27:43Speaker 6: first time in the history of college hockey regular season game.
- 27:47Speaker 7: No, we'd be called regular season games and we've never
- 27:49Speaker 7: had raps before. You can think you can thank the
- 27:52Speaker 7: w NBA suite. We're taking their window.
- 27:55Speaker 6: So it's really just we're kind of filling we're filling
- 27:57Speaker 6: the we're plugging a hole here. So so I'm looking
- 28:00Speaker 6: forward to doing that. A lot of first and second
- 28:02Speaker 6: round picks get to see him up close. But yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 6: for sure, the ni Al and McKenna this year really
- 28:07Speaker 6: infused it with some star power, and I think it's
- 28:11Speaker 6: you know, the sport has potential. It's got great potential,
- 28:13Speaker 6: uh to do better and to get more eyeballs on it.
- 28:17Speaker 6: And we'd love to get the National Championship game on
- 28:19Speaker 6: ABC on a Saturday afternoon.
- 28:21Speaker 7: You know that'd be really cool.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Uh.
- 28:22Speaker 6: This year we're back on ESPN for the Frozen Four,
- 28:25Speaker 6: which I'm excited about. The championship game, Yeah, semi Finals
- 28:29Speaker 6: still ESPN too because we got the Masters Thursday Friday,
- 28:32Speaker 6: but the Natty will be on ESPN regular I hope someday.
- 28:35Speaker 6: Also we can get it on ABC. We see what
- 28:38Speaker 6: it's done for the w NBA and for women's college basketball.
- 28:41Speaker 6: To get that on ABC and just get you get
- 28:44Speaker 6: so many more eyeballs, you know, and so so we'll
- 28:46Speaker 6: see where it goes from here.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I do remember doing Frozen four rap to Dave Starman,
- 28:50Speaker 1: who is such an advocate Bassport as well.
- 28:52Speaker 6: Yes he's now the Rangers radio guy. Congratulations day Oh
- 28:56Speaker 6: that's amazing.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Good for him.
- 28:57Speaker 1: What I always found impressive about your booch was not
- 28:59Speaker 1: only the passion for hockey but finding the time to
- 29:01Speaker 1: do it.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Obviously, I know you're a devoted father and and you know.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Have lots of other interests, but like college hockey specifically,
- 29:07Speaker 1: like you have.
- 29:08Speaker 2: To work to find that.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Like I grew up in Kingston, right, if I still
- 29:11Speaker 1: follow the OHL that would take some effort for you.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But I still feel like I could know how to
- 29:15Speaker 1: navigate that, Like, how did you especially now maybe it's
- 29:17Speaker 1: easier with McKenna, but like years ago, five, ten years ago,
- 29:20Speaker 1: how are you able to follow college hockey?
- 29:22Speaker 2: It wasn't readily available.
- 29:24Speaker 7: It was tough. Man. I got my first chosen four
- 29:26Speaker 7: was twenty thirteen.
- 29:27Speaker 6: So that's when I really decide to, you know, dedicate
- 29:30Speaker 6: myself to the sport.
- 29:31Speaker 7: I love all levels of hockey, but you know, I.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Said, if I'm going to be the voice I wanted
- 29:34Speaker 6: because so many college hockey broadcasters, they memorized three or
- 29:38Speaker 6: four people's names.
- 29:39Speaker 7: And maybe this happens in Canadian junior too, I don't know,
- 29:41Speaker 7: but when they go.
- 29:42Speaker 6: To a national broadcast, but they really only remember three
- 29:45Speaker 6: or four names and they're not really invested in the sport.
- 29:47Speaker 6: I get it. It's it's small. It's a boutique sport,
- 29:51Speaker 6: is not a lot. And back then, like you said,
- 29:52Speaker 6: it's not on television, you couldn't find it, and you
- 29:55Speaker 6: couldn't find it in high definition.
- 29:57Speaker 7: You know, first you had to find it and then
- 30:00Speaker 7: find it in high definition.
- 30:01Speaker 6: So it was really difficult and I really wanted That's
- 30:04Speaker 6: why I came up with the college hockey rankings because
- 30:06Speaker 6: that way every week and every weekend, I'm going through
- 30:09Speaker 6: all the scores. I'm comparing schedules. Okay, they won that
- 30:13Speaker 6: game on the road, but they lost to them at home.
- 30:16Speaker 6: They should go down a bit. They played a tougher schedule.
- 30:18Speaker 6: I like them at three of them, and I really
- 30:20Speaker 6: put a lot into it. It was my way of
- 30:22Speaker 6: being invested so I could do my job better. But
- 30:26Speaker 6: then the Big ten network came along, and that really
- 30:28Speaker 6: I think opened it up because they televised games professionally
- 30:32Speaker 6: in high definition. And then that pushed other conferences to
- 30:35Speaker 6: do the same. And now these schools have great video
- 30:38Speaker 6: audio video programs that do amazing video work like we
- 30:42Speaker 6: see all NHL social media teams have now too. The
- 30:45Speaker 6: teams have these great social media departments to get the
- 30:48Speaker 6: great content, but the extra camera work the college kids
- 30:51Speaker 6: can do around the rink and provide these on social
- 30:54Speaker 6: It's just it's never been a I've always said every
- 30:56Speaker 6: ten years, I say, there's never been a better time
- 30:58Speaker 6: to be a hockey fan for content. That's what when
- 31:01Speaker 6: people complain about you know, whether TESPN or someone nutcover
- 31:04Speaker 6: in hockey, I go, what do you have to complain about.
- 31:06Speaker 7: There is content everywhere.
- 31:09Speaker 6: Everyone is writing about it, breaking down plays X's and
- 31:12Speaker 6: O's podcasts like there's no need to complain anymore. Maybe
- 31:17Speaker 6: there was at some point, but stop, just enjoy it,
- 31:20Speaker 6: go get it.
- 31:21Speaker 7: It's everywhere.
- 31:22Speaker 3: It's uh, it's everywhere, and it's readily available like chicken yep.
- 31:26Speaker 3: And speaking of chicken, chicken Parm, I had to ask
- 31:28Speaker 3: you about chicken parm. Yeah, story about Ray Ferraro and
- 31:32Speaker 3: I got to hear all about it.
- 31:34Speaker 6: Yeah, that's you know, he you know, his teams would
- 31:36Speaker 6: never make the playoffs, so he would always come to
- 31:38Speaker 6: ESPN and do NHL Tonight as a guest analyst because
- 31:41Speaker 6: he knew that's what he wanted to do after playing
- 31:44Speaker 6: days were over. And so you know, one ninety k
- 31:47Speaker 6: and there's this place across the street, Volturnos. It was
- 31:49Speaker 6: Da Vinci's and then Volturnos, and they had a great
- 31:53Speaker 6: you know, takeout chicken parm and Espen did not have
- 31:55Speaker 6: a cafeteria yet. They had three vetting machines and a
- 31:58Speaker 6: loaf of bread and that's all they had. So you
- 32:01Speaker 6: had to go out and get your food. McDonald's Chili's
- 32:04Speaker 6: Ruby Tuesdays there was a sort of there was this
- 32:08Speaker 6: Italian place. Yeah, the cottage cheese always in the apple
- 32:10Speaker 6: sauce and the saladbar. I et it that to why
- 32:12Speaker 6: put the cottag cheese next to put bacon bits?
- 32:16Speaker 7: At least there's some bacon in there. But I want
- 32:17Speaker 7: cottage cheese next to my apple sauce. But this place
- 32:20Speaker 7: had great takeout chicken parm. I mean I would get it.
- 32:22Speaker 7: Four days a week.
- 32:23Speaker 6: We'd go to the gym, work out, get the chicken parm,
- 32:26Speaker 6: go into work and watch hockey all night. It was
- 32:28Speaker 6: the best life you could possibly have. And one night,
- 32:31Speaker 6: you know, usually we're doing our t shirts. We'd eat
- 32:33Speaker 6: first and then get dressed, put the shirt and tie on.
- 32:35Speaker 6: We keep all our clothes at ESPN and go to
- 32:38Speaker 6: work like this, put my shirt and tie and then
- 32:40Speaker 6: go home like this. And one night we made a
- 32:42Speaker 6: mistake of putting dress, shirt and tie. Let let's eat
- 32:45Speaker 6: and then we'll go on. It's an early game, seven
- 32:46Speaker 6: o'clock game. We have to do wraps. And so he
- 32:49Speaker 6: took this piece of chicken and it you know, these
- 32:51Speaker 6: plastic forks were brutal, and it fell off. His plastic
- 32:57Speaker 6: fork landed in this pool of mar Andana Marinara and
- 33:01Speaker 6: the tsunami of Marinara comes up and all over his
- 33:06Speaker 6: a tragedy of epic proportion. So we're on the air
- 33:09Speaker 6: that night and there's like, you know, and of course
- 33:11Speaker 6: I'm gonna mention it on TV because anytime you can
- 33:14Speaker 6: do that with Ray, like last year, he said, yeah,
- 33:16Speaker 6: we were in the same suit.
- 33:17Speaker 7: I wore last night for the game in Colorado.
- 33:20Speaker 6: Certainly, yes, Who's like, come, look, I'm alongside Ray Ferraro,
- 33:23Speaker 6: Who's were in the exact same suit he wore last
- 33:25Speaker 6: night in Colorado.
- 33:26Speaker 7: I'm John Butcher Gross.
- 33:28Speaker 6: So yeah, so of course we So when he goes
- 33:30Speaker 6: back to play for the Thrashers again, to go fifteen,
- 33:34Speaker 6: you know, sixty and twelve. Every time, every time I
- 33:37Speaker 6: start calling him chicken palm re ferral, it's a bit
- 33:39Speaker 6: of a shout out to our Italian here it is.
- 33:41Speaker 6: And that night and I did it without telling that.
- 33:43Speaker 6: I just called chicken parm Ray and it caught on
- 33:46Speaker 6: so quickly. He'd be going through airports and hockey fans, Hey,
- 33:49Speaker 6: chicken farm, chicken par You know, he got trained to
- 33:51Speaker 6: Saint Louis and Pablo Demitra and Mark bergra a Chicken Paul.
- 33:58Speaker 7: I mean, the nickname is a dish.
- 34:00Speaker 6: It's like calling someone munzeretel sticks, you know, or a
- 34:03Speaker 6: HOGI or you know. But it was so yeah, So
- 34:06Speaker 6: that's how that's where up began. And then that Now
- 34:08Speaker 6: let's just turn to the giant thing and it's really
- 34:10Speaker 6: culminating this Saturday, the Providence Bruins are.
- 34:13Speaker 7: For one night, like they're changing their name for the Chicken.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Palms or something awesome.
- 34:19Speaker 7: So but they got a hold of me.
- 34:20Speaker 6: I'm doing the ceremonial puck drop, my first at the
- 34:23Speaker 6: American League level. I've done one of the college level
- 34:26Speaker 6: Army BC at West Point, and this is my first
- 34:29Speaker 6: American League ceremonial puck drop, all because of Chicken Palm.
- 34:33Speaker 6: So the swag should be fun. I forget, I forget.
- 34:36Speaker 6: Go to Providence Bruins the social media cut. You'll see
- 34:39Speaker 6: what their jersey looks like, what they're called for this
- 34:41Speaker 6: one night. So here we are.
- 34:43Speaker 2: That's an all time great nickname, Chicken parm. Absolutely, And
- 34:46Speaker 2: so I'm on the further topic of food. But I
- 34:49Speaker 2: was listening to Ryan Riscilla's podcast.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Craig Kilburn was on and Craig was telling the story,
- 34:53Speaker 1: he goes, I had dinner with John Bucha Gras because
- 34:55Speaker 1: Bochie reached out to me.
- 34:56Speaker 2: It was, by the way, that guy's an unbelievable shape.
- 34:58Speaker 2: He's got a thirty inch waist.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Mariscilla I said, that's gonna be the biggest with your podcast,
- 35:05Speaker 1: that Boucci is a thirty inch waist. And here's the
- 35:08Speaker 1: thing for a guy that's not well, You're in an
- 35:10Speaker 1: incredible shape. And here's my favorite thing about you. You
- 35:12Speaker 1: think a guy who's in great shape like yourself is
- 35:14Speaker 1: so finicky.
- 35:14Speaker 2: No, once here you'd get the KFC bucket. It was
- 35:17Speaker 2: the greatest thing ever. You just watch.
- 35:21Speaker 6: Yeah, it was in the newsroom ones and people look
- 35:23Speaker 6: at I don't like the word skinny. I'm self conscious.
- 35:25Speaker 6: You know, people are young and they're overweight. They're self conscious,
- 35:28Speaker 6: but people are underweight. We were also self conscious underweight.
- 35:32Speaker 6: I always, especially being an athlete, I'm always trying to
- 35:34Speaker 6: gain weight. I want to hit the baseball farther. I
- 35:36Speaker 6: want to jump. Oh, I want to be able to dunk.
- 35:37Speaker 6: I want to be able to shoot a ninety mile
- 35:39Speaker 6: an hour, you know, slap shot from the blue line.
- 35:41Speaker 6: I don't want to have a rainbow arc to my
- 35:43Speaker 6: wrist shot from you know, from thirty feet.
- 35:45Speaker 7: And so I always tried to gain weight. I could
- 35:47Speaker 7: never do it. I was what they call a hard
- 35:49Speaker 7: gain or just no matter what I did.
- 35:51Speaker 6: But we can eat because our stomachs can expand, you know,
- 35:55Speaker 6: and where someone That's why obviously Joey Chestnutt is the goat.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Because absolutely the absolute goat.
- 36:01Speaker 7: Yeah he's not skinny, but he's not fat.
- 36:03Speaker 6: If he were obs or fat, he stomach couldn't expand
- 36:06Speaker 6: he couldn't eat as much. So anyway, stan vrett I said,
- 36:09Speaker 6: oh I could eat. I could eat a bucket of chick.
- 36:10Speaker 6: I don't know why I even came up. Maybe a
- 36:12Speaker 6: Kentucky Fried Chicken halftime report with that Nan Burk was on,
- 36:15Speaker 6: I don't know, And I said, I could eat a
- 36:17Speaker 6: bucket of chicken. He goes, you can't eat a bucket
- 36:19Speaker 6: of chicken. I go, I will go down to Queen
- 36:21Speaker 6: Street and southey team Connecticut and get a twelve piece
- 36:24Speaker 6: and I.
- 36:24Speaker 7: Will eat it right in front of your face. And
- 36:27Speaker 7: so I went down and did that. You know.
- 36:30Speaker 6: Then suddenly Sports Center, since we do so much inventory
- 36:33Speaker 6: We're always looking for something. We're always looking for a hook.
- 36:35Speaker 6: We produced TV twenty four hours a day, three hundred
- 36:37Speaker 6: and sixty five days a year at ESPN with seven networks.
- 36:39Speaker 6: We need help, we need ideas, and so they kind
- 36:42Speaker 6: of jumped on it, made.
- 36:43Speaker 7: A thing about it. We did a little full screen
- 36:45Speaker 7: with the stats.
- 36:45Speaker 6: How many calories, how many saturated and fat grams I
- 36:48Speaker 6: stuffed in my head that night, how much sodium? Oh
- 36:51Speaker 6: my god, it was I thirsty, And so yeah, I
- 36:53Speaker 6: decided to make it a once a year thing, and
- 36:55Speaker 6: then everyone would sign my bucket, and I've saved all
- 36:58Speaker 6: these buckets as like, everyone who worked on the show
- 37:01Speaker 6: that night would sign my bucket, whether they're handed me
- 37:04Speaker 6: is sh sheet with the highlight, whether it was Scott
- 37:06Speaker 6: van Pelt or whether whoever it was. So yeah, bucket
- 37:08Speaker 6: and chickennite became a thing, and that actually turned into
- 37:11Speaker 6: a ESPN the O Show commercial bit me and Kenny
- 37:15Speaker 6: Main did where we did some We did like six
- 37:17Speaker 6: different commercials they ran on ESPNO show that turned out
- 37:21Speaker 6: to be very profitable. Let me tell you, so, all
- 37:24Speaker 6: these little stupid things I do just because I like
- 37:27Speaker 6: to have, Like when I was in college.
- 37:28Speaker 7: I would make.
- 37:29Speaker 6: Inner mural basketball rankings and I would put them on
- 37:32Speaker 6: the cafeterior door of the B League and the C League,
- 37:36Speaker 6: just their records, you know, and the rankings, and people
- 37:39Speaker 6: couldn't wait to see where their team was on Monday
- 37:42Speaker 6: when I put the new rankings out. I just like
- 37:44Speaker 6: always doing that kind of stuff. And Advan remembers the
- 37:47Speaker 6: guy named Gus Ramsey and Judgson Birch at ESPN, we
- 37:50Speaker 6: would always come up with these fun games around the
- 37:52Speaker 6: around the pod. We call the pod that the show pod.
- 37:56Speaker 6: We're preparing for the show and we have a little
- 37:58Speaker 6: team of people are on that particular show. And whether
- 38:01Speaker 6: it was you know, naming the best Beatles songs or
- 38:03Speaker 6: the five best moments in hockey history, we just just
- 38:06Speaker 6: some little game to kind of pass the time and
- 38:09Speaker 6: just make life fun. That's what I've always done from
- 38:11Speaker 6: a young age, just come up with these little things.
- 38:13Speaker 6: I enjoy doing them because I like seeing people's reaction.
- 38:16Speaker 6: They enjoy seeing them. So whether it's Bochi overtime Challenge,
- 38:19Speaker 6: college hockey rankings, you know, the best intermural basketball team
- 38:22Speaker 6: at Heidelberg College in March of nineteen eighty three, whatever
- 38:25Speaker 6: it was. I just like doing these little stupid things
- 38:29Speaker 6: and sometimes they turn into to really kind of fun
- 38:32Speaker 6: things like Bocci Overtime Challenge that continues to this day.
- 38:36Speaker 3: I like the Boucci bucket as well the Bucci Chicken bucket,
- 38:39Speaker 3: which is great. But you mentioned you mentioned Sports Center
- 38:42Speaker 3: and you know we talked to Steve Leavy last year
- 38:44Speaker 3: and we had a blast with them about commercials and
- 38:46Speaker 3: stuff like that. And yeah, you know you had one
- 38:48Speaker 3: mess shirt Giineer muffs with Raymond Green. But do you
- 38:51Speaker 3: have any favorite of these? This is Sports Center commercials
- 38:53Speaker 3: because you I mean, those are some of the best
- 38:55Speaker 3: in sports. They are without a doubt.
- 38:59Speaker 6: Yeah, that was what why whin Ding Kennedy that was
- 39:01Speaker 6: a great firm in New York that would do Nike
- 39:03Speaker 6: commercials would come up very expensive to do it. It was
- 39:06Speaker 6: like a movie set. There's fifty people there. They use
- 39:08Speaker 6: film like they make a movie. They actually use film.
- 39:11Speaker 6: Now that we no longer use them because part of
- 39:14Speaker 6: our first layoffs was them. They got laid off too,
- 39:17Speaker 6: so now we do make them. Now we make them ourselves.
- 39:19Speaker 6: Some of them are pretty decent, but you know, we
- 39:21Speaker 6: make them ourselves in house.
- 39:22Speaker 7: But they were very talented people.
- 39:24Speaker 6: They were like these incredible directors and we come up
- 39:27Speaker 6: with ideas on the spots a lot and a lot
- 39:29Speaker 6: of my favorites they are not so much how they
- 39:31Speaker 6: might have ended up, you know, some of them are good.
- 39:35Speaker 7: But just hanging out with these people for the day.
- 39:37Speaker 6: Like Shaquille O'Neil when he took down the human mascot
- 39:40Speaker 6: dressed as a policeman.
- 39:41Speaker 7: It was me and Stuart Scott, Wayne Gretzky the line change.
- 39:45Speaker 6: When he blowed you change, and we're two people are
- 39:47Speaker 6: doing Sports Center. We jump up and here comes Brian
- 39:50Speaker 6: Kenny and and somebody they jump in. So that was
- 39:52Speaker 6: cool doing one with Wayne, and then you're hanging out
- 39:54Speaker 6: with him, getting a picture on the Sports Center set.
- 39:57Speaker 6: And so yeah, David Ortiz, you know, meet my imaginary family.
- 40:00Speaker 3: So yeah, so good.
- 40:05Speaker 6: And Wally it's not what you think when he puts
- 40:08Speaker 6: on the Yankee head making you know, trying to break
- 40:10Speaker 6: it in Wally while he sees him with.
- 40:12Speaker 7: The Yankee head, it's not what you think.
- 40:15Speaker 6: So good and uh, but yeah, so just being a
- 40:18Speaker 6: part around those athletes. You know, Travis Persona did one
- 40:21Speaker 6: with him one time, so just just so many very people.
- 40:24Speaker 6: And sometimes I think about, yeah, it's again, it's been
- 40:26Speaker 6: it'll be twenty nine years October twenty eighth.
- 40:28Speaker 7: Wow, And I look back.
- 40:31Speaker 6: And sometimes think I went fast. Has it really been
- 40:33Speaker 6: that good? I forget about all these amazing things seeing
- 40:35Speaker 6: author David Halberstam running into Hunter S. Thompson in the
- 40:39Speaker 6: makeup room.
- 40:40Speaker 7: Hunter S. Thompson like a legend.
- 40:42Speaker 6: He comes around the cornery smoking inside, you know, which
- 40:45Speaker 6: obviouslys against the law. But it's just it really has
- 40:49Speaker 6: been a place where as I look back and I
- 40:51Speaker 6: mentioned the Rock and Vince fond, it's like, it's really
- 40:53Speaker 6: been an amazing twenty nine years. And sometimes I think,
- 40:56Speaker 6: like I wish, you know, we all kind of wish
- 40:57Speaker 6: our careers were better in any line of work or God,
- 41:00Speaker 6: I wish I could have done this event. I wish
- 41:02Speaker 6: I could, you know, call the Stanley Cup final, wish
- 41:04Speaker 6: I could do a sports center here or whatever. But
- 41:07Speaker 6: you look back, you really are man, I really was blessed.
- 41:09Speaker 6: It's been an amazing run with a great experience.
- 41:12Speaker 2: You've earned every bit of that success. By the way.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Halbertson Summer of forty nine breaks the game with the
- 41:16Speaker 1: great authors of all time.
- 41:17Speaker 7: So I'm absolutely yeah, absolute goats. Yea.
- 41:20Speaker 6: The kids don't know about him, but my goodness to
- 41:22Speaker 6: see him, I was too shy. I couldn't even go
- 41:24Speaker 6: up to him and say, I'm not I'm not shy anymore.
- 41:27Speaker 7: I would talk.
- 41:28Speaker 6: No one really impresses me, and I will talk to anybody.
- 41:30Speaker 6: If I saw Taylor Swift walk right now in this
- 41:33Speaker 6: in this outlet mall in the Stero, Florida, I mean, hey, Taylor,
- 41:36Speaker 6: what's up? It would not FaZe me. But back then
- 41:38Speaker 6: I was like, I could not talk to David Halberston.
- 41:41Speaker 6: I'm playing the great parts of oder. Oh yeah, you
- 41:43Speaker 6: don't care any That's.
- 41:44Speaker 1: A great point. Hunter Stompson Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Now that they said these smoke, I picture like the
- 41:48Speaker 1: cigarette holder a lot.
- 41:49Speaker 7: He had, That's what he had, and he got sunglasses on.
- 41:52Speaker 7: He's like, you know, because John Walsh. John Walsh had
- 41:55Speaker 7: just hired him to write for page two.
- 41:57Speaker 6: It's an old ESPN dot com thing kids when when
- 41:59Speaker 6: they had when kids went out websites, And he hired
- 42:01Speaker 6: him because he was just you know, this rock and
- 42:03Speaker 6: roll author and uh, and so he wrote he wrote
- 42:06Speaker 6: for us for a little.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Bit, there was no greater passionate hockey fan.
- 42:09Speaker 1: When ESPN didn't have hockey, you would advocate to get
- 42:11Speaker 1: highlights into sports and Er saying, no, this is an
- 42:13Speaker 1: important game, we have to do this, And eventually hockey
- 42:15Speaker 1: comes back, and I'm like, no, way's gonna be happier
- 42:17Speaker 1: than Bouchie.
- 42:18Speaker 2: And something I'm so happy for you for specifically is.
- 42:20Speaker 1: You told me how much you wanted to do play
- 42:22Speaker 1: by play and you said, you know, they see a
- 42:24Speaker 1: certain way, right they typecash you.
- 42:26Speaker 2: You're terrific in the studio. Everyone agrees on that, and
- 42:28Speaker 2: then the play by play they be like, hey, boot,
- 42:30Speaker 2: you're not bad. You know, we've got Leavy, we've got McDonough,
- 42:32Speaker 2: et cetera.
- 42:33Speaker 1: And so to your point, no matter where you are,
- 42:35Speaker 1: there's always something you're butting your head up against.
- 42:37Speaker 2: There's always some frustrationers have.
- 42:38Speaker 1: And the best cop but I could pay you is
- 42:40Speaker 1: that I really do think you've found your way with
- 42:42Speaker 1: the play by play. Like I think you always have
- 42:44Speaker 1: acknowledge and yeah, you always passion, but now like when
- 42:46Speaker 1: you're calling a game, I'm like, yeah, and especially our
- 42:48Speaker 1: buddy Kevin Weeks, I've told you both how much I
- 42:50Speaker 1: enjoyed listing both of you together, But how rewarding has
- 42:52Speaker 1: it been.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Not only have hockey back in the ESPAM, but calling games.
- 42:57Speaker 7: Well.
- 42:57Speaker 6: I grew up listened to hockey games on the radio.
- 42:59Speaker 6: I grew up around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But my dad was
- 43:02Speaker 6: a Boston guy who grew up in South Boston. He
- 43:05Speaker 6: was a math major at Boston College. I always say
- 43:08Speaker 6: my dad was good wool hunting without the swear words.
- 43:10Speaker 6: My dad was a rough and tumble South Boston kid,
- 43:14Speaker 6: the only Italian in South Boston, so they no one
- 43:16Speaker 6: liked him. If you weren't Irish, they didn't like you
- 43:20Speaker 6: in Southton. And but he was rough and tumble and tough,
- 43:23Speaker 6: a great athlete, played goalie without a mask at Boston
- 43:26Speaker 6: Latin High School, played semi pro football.
- 43:29Speaker 7: But he didn't swear. My dad never swore. It was
- 43:32Speaker 7: good wool hunting without the swear words. So he moved out.
- 43:34Speaker 7: He moved out to.
- 43:35Speaker 6: Pittsburgh to become a Sears store manager. It's all about
- 43:38Speaker 6: retail with me and so but so. He would listen
- 43:42Speaker 6: to the Bruins on WBZ radio because it came in
- 43:45Speaker 6: as clear as a bell, the Westinghouse Broadcasting System KMOX
- 43:49Speaker 6: and Saint Louis Katka in Pittsburgh and w BZ in Boston.
- 43:52Speaker 6: You'd listen to them all over the country. I can't
- 43:54Speaker 6: get WBZ in Providence. Now, It's like yeah, because what
- 43:57Speaker 6: all was going on with you know, the cell phones
- 43:59Speaker 6: and the and everything in the air now. Back then, though,
- 44:01Speaker 6: the atmosphere was crystal clear. You could listen to a
- 44:03Speaker 6: radio station Boston in rural Pennsylvania and I could listen
- 44:07Speaker 6: to the Bruins every night, and my dad did, and
- 44:09Speaker 6: this was the Bobby or Bruins, and this is They're
- 44:11Speaker 6: the biggest thing in Boston. He's a man in his
- 44:13Speaker 6: late thirties early forties, so he's a huge sports fan.
- 44:17Speaker 6: And so that's how I grew up with a game,
- 44:19Speaker 6: so play by play on the radio and the great
- 44:21Speaker 6: voices on TV. As I got into my teenage years,
- 44:23Speaker 6: I didn't have cable while I was thirteen, you know,
- 44:25Speaker 6: like Dick Enberg and all these amazing people, That's what
- 44:28Speaker 6: I wanted to do. Then I saw Chris Berman do
- 44:30Speaker 6: sports when I was fifteen, I.
- 44:32Speaker 7: Said, I'm going to do that. That's what I want
- 44:35Speaker 7: to do.
- 44:35Speaker 6: I want to talk about music and history and baseball
- 44:39Speaker 6: and sports and hockey and use that French Canadian accent
- 44:42Speaker 6: cadianna last when someone scores a goal, and that's what
- 44:47Speaker 6: I'm gonna do. But I also but I always and
- 44:50Speaker 6: then so you start in the business and you get
- 44:52Speaker 6: yanchor local news, cape cod access for five years, local
- 44:56Speaker 6: cable access news, like for five years. Then I go
- 44:59Speaker 6: to Providence for two and so then it's like, well,
- 45:02Speaker 6: now I have two kids. I got married, young eyed
- 45:04Speaker 6: kids young, So I can't go back in the minor
- 45:07Speaker 6: leagues to do play by play if that's what I
- 45:09Speaker 6: want to do. I got to keep on this track
- 45:10Speaker 6: because I got to pay the mortgage and I gotta
- 45:12Speaker 6: I gotta pay off this dodge and knon you know
- 45:14Speaker 6: that I'm that I have twelve percent interestraight on, So
- 45:17Speaker 6: I gotta take care of this stuff. So you know,
- 45:20Speaker 6: life was tough back in the in the late ninety
- 45:23Speaker 6: recession area or early ninety recession. So yeah, so so yeah,
- 45:28Speaker 6: so when that came, when that happened, that's when I
- 45:30Speaker 6: got so hockey left. And then six I go, hey,
- 45:32Speaker 6: can I do these NCAA regionals play by play?
- 45:35Speaker 5: You know you don't.
- 45:36Speaker 7: It's free.
- 45:36Speaker 6: It's I'm just a full time employee and not paying
- 45:39Speaker 6: the extra it saves you paying somebody to do it. Yeah,
- 45:41Speaker 6: go to Worcester John and and go ahead and call
- 45:43Speaker 6: Clarkson versus sacred Art not at it.
- 45:46Speaker 7: And so that's where I kind of that's where I
- 45:47Speaker 7: really kind of started.
- 45:48Speaker 6: So then when by the time we got hockey back,
- 45:51Speaker 6: i'd been doing college hockey for fifteen years, I've been
- 45:55Speaker 6: doing the Frozen four for seven, even though that's only
- 45:57Speaker 6: like eight games a year, so it's not a lot
- 46:00Speaker 6: of reps.
- 46:00Speaker 7: But yeah, so it's been, it's been great.
- 46:03Speaker 6: It's been you know, obviously might have extended my career
- 46:05Speaker 6: by keeping me around ESPN. And it's just a new craft.
- 46:09Speaker 6: And I know I'm not conventional. I don't want to
- 46:12Speaker 6: be conventional. I don't want to be distracting though. I
- 46:14Speaker 6: don't want to be different for the sake of being different.
- 46:16Speaker 6: But I really want to try to do it, try
- 46:19Speaker 6: to do it in a different way.
- 46:20Speaker 7: I look at it like art and like a craft,
- 46:23Speaker 7: and everyone should be unique.
- 46:25Speaker 6: And I don't want to sound like I'm straight out
- 46:28Speaker 6: of this university where they all kind of sound alike.
- 46:30Speaker 6: I just want to but again, I don't want to
- 46:31Speaker 6: be distracted. It's been tough. I like my first two
- 46:34Speaker 6: games this year. I still can't listen to myself, and
- 46:38Speaker 6: which might help me, but I just can't listen to
- 46:39Speaker 6: the highlights on the NHL app like I like, okay,
- 46:42Speaker 6: the condensed version, I'll see how it sounds that I get.
- 46:44Speaker 7: Those goals and I did it. How did that sound?
- 46:47Speaker 7: I like that?
- 46:48Speaker 6: So I certainly know the players, I know the league.
- 46:50Speaker 6: I pay attention. Every game is like the super Bowl
- 46:53Speaker 6: that I get to do. I probably do twenty five
- 46:55Speaker 6: to thirty a year. I got Utah Colorado next Tuesday,
- 46:59Speaker 6: So I really prepare for every game, and I love
- 47:01Speaker 6: doing every game. I'm like a kid on Christmas every
- 47:04Speaker 6: time game day and I get to do one. So yeah,
- 47:06Speaker 6: at this stage of your life, when you're that excited
- 47:08Speaker 6: about doing something, especially at the company that you worked
- 47:11Speaker 6: at for twenty nine years, most people can't wait to
- 47:14Speaker 6: quit right or retire. So it's been kind of a
- 47:16Speaker 6: blessing again to still be at the same company and
- 47:20Speaker 6: still have this rejuvenation and this whole new lease on
- 47:22Speaker 6: life and enthusiasm to work.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean You've had an amazing career and truly
- 47:27Speaker 3: unique voice, you know, getting into the NHL now talking
- 47:31Speaker 3: about the current season so far for you, you know,
- 47:35Speaker 3: great gold caf Field last night was just an amazing
- 47:37Speaker 3: overtime Booty Overtime Challenge winner. What have you liked so
- 47:42Speaker 3: far from the season, and so.
- 47:46Speaker 6: I think it's it seems a bit wide open, which
- 47:48Speaker 6: is kind of cool. I thought Montreal was a sneaky
- 47:50Speaker 6: playoff pick and would not be shocked if they make it.
- 47:54Speaker 6: I love what the Bell Center in Montreal has infused
- 47:57Speaker 6: so much excitement. The games on TV are so exciting
- 48:01Speaker 6: you're not even there and you feel like you're there.
- 48:03Speaker 7: Oh it's part Really, it's.
- 48:05Speaker 6: Really something special. And now that you know again it's
- 48:08Speaker 6: not just this is the thing about pro sports, it's
- 48:10Speaker 6: not just being good. Obviously a lot of these owners
- 48:13Speaker 6: are billionaires now, they're really what you know, what gets
- 48:15Speaker 6: them off is making money.
- 48:16Speaker 7: They enjoy making money and to win is mad.
- 48:19Speaker 6: But but when you're fun and interesting and win like
- 48:22Speaker 6: that's that's a that's a that's a home run. And
- 48:26Speaker 6: whether I was watching the new ESPN, you know, the
- 48:27Speaker 6: latest Boston Red Sox documentary on two thousand and four
- 48:30Speaker 6: that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were part of it.
- 48:33Speaker 6: It's really good. It's on the ESPN app and you
- 48:37Speaker 6: get that. Yeah, that team was just Johnny Damon, Kevin Millar, Paige.
- 48:41Speaker 6: It's not just winning, it's winning with characters and interesting
- 48:44Speaker 6: people and people you can connect with, or young people
- 48:46Speaker 6: in the Canadian sense, like you're really it's like hope,
- 48:49Speaker 6: it's so exciting, it's new, it's fresh, all these different
- 48:52Speaker 6: players from all over the world. You know, a kid
- 48:54Speaker 6: from America and Cole Kaffiel, this Russian kid Demodov that
- 48:58Speaker 6: five GMS are going to get fired for for passing
- 49:00Speaker 6: over him and it should have been the first pick
- 49:03Speaker 6: of the draft or or at least a second or third,
- 49:07Speaker 6: and so yeah, that's exciting. So it's not just having
- 49:09Speaker 6: a team that's good, but it's also having these interesting
- 49:12Speaker 6: characters to really, you know, to really sell your team
- 49:16Speaker 6: and make it a fun experience, not just bottom line
- 49:19Speaker 6: or you know, bottom line stuff, which a lot of
- 49:21Speaker 6: the owners are now. So that's what excites me. But overall,
- 49:23Speaker 6: the league, like I said, it appears to be a
- 49:25Speaker 6: little bit open. Florida's obviously vulnerable with the injuries and
- 49:29Speaker 6: three straight finals, but the East not a lot there,
- 49:32Speaker 6: so maybe they could sneak in again for a fourth
- 49:35Speaker 6: straight final. But it's early, and it's just kind of
- 49:39Speaker 6: it takes a while to see what's gonna take shape
- 49:42Speaker 6: here ten fifteen games, because because it's so important early,
- 49:45Speaker 6: the overreactions earli are really off the charts as well, aren't.
- 49:48Speaker 3: The best part is overreacting right now? Yes, it's the best.
- 49:52Speaker 6: Part ever since Thanksgiving standings became a thing about, you know,
- 49:56Speaker 6: seven years ago. It's really put the onus on this thing.
- 50:00Speaker 6: Guys start gripping, Coaches, start gripping, organizations, start gripping, fan
- 50:04Speaker 6: bases start gripping. So early now, I mean, any of
- 50:07Speaker 6: these teams that are obviously off to slow starts, they
- 50:10Speaker 6: could easily win six or seven, you know, and then
- 50:13Speaker 6: boom they're going. But it is interesting, you know, I
- 50:15Speaker 6: think the biggest part of the league right now that
- 50:17Speaker 6: we've seen a shift the last two years is it's
- 50:18Speaker 6: hard to score five on five. The coaches have figured
- 50:22Speaker 6: out how to defend five on five, and if you
- 50:23Speaker 6: don't have the personnel, it's hard to score five on five.
- 50:28Speaker 6: And you know, and that's why Colorado with the McKinnon
- 50:31Speaker 6: line and maccar and Taves when they're on the ice,
- 50:35Speaker 6: it's hard to beat that. Obviously, when McDavis on the ice,
- 50:38Speaker 6: it's a but that line because of a car. He's
- 50:41Speaker 6: the extra X factor in that. It's like a power
- 50:44Speaker 6: play whenever they're on the ice, five on five. That's
- 50:46Speaker 6: why they're my favorite. If they can never get looked,
- 50:49Speaker 6: and they have depth and they seem to have a cause.
- 50:51Speaker 6: This year they have an early like pause like this
- 50:54Speaker 6: is our year. When a good team has that early,
- 50:57Speaker 6: that's dangerous. Uh.
- 50:59Speaker 3: You mentioned Thanksgiving and we doing the NHL Network yesterday
- 51:03Speaker 3: and are wer we're talking about Buffalo's a business will
- 51:06Speaker 3: start once again and how the comparable right, the comparables
- 51:09Speaker 3: are the same to last year, and the producer goes,
- 51:12Speaker 3: you know, typically American Thanksgiving is when we is when
- 51:16Speaker 3: we judge the team's not making the playoffs. But for Buffalo,
- 51:18Speaker 3: we're gonna have to go to Canadian thanks very good.
- 51:23Speaker 7: It might be it might be it just doesn't look good.
- 51:26Speaker 6: Obviously, there needs to be a you know, you hate
- 51:29Speaker 6: to say it, but you need a whole new you know,
- 51:32Speaker 6: front office there. You just have to it's not gonna
- 51:34Speaker 6: I don't think it's gonna change. It's it just has
- 51:36Speaker 6: a standards. They've been given plenty of time, and I'm
- 51:39Speaker 6: sure that's compul Terry Pogole has got a lot on
- 51:42Speaker 6: his plate, but between the bills in the stadium, it's
- 51:44Speaker 6: probably the last thing he wants to worry about.
- 51:45Speaker 7: But he's gonna have to worry about it at this point.
- 51:48Speaker 6: Otherwise it's gonna it's gonna be like a house that
- 51:51Speaker 6: you're just not doing any work to it.
- 51:53Speaker 7: It's just gonna slowly dilapidate.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Unlike the career of John Butcher Grass, which continues to
- 51:58Speaker 1: ascend after twenty nine years, almost of these been hopefully
- 52:00Speaker 1: many more years.
- 52:01Speaker 2: John Butcher Grass never I know, I know, I'm r turr.
- 52:12Speaker 2: You are licking in.
- 52:13Speaker 7: I can play in the talk that I'm really a
- 52:15Speaker 7: third light.
- 52:16Speaker 2: With army knife at proof that great things coming.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Three is the reason why I'll never forget your birthday
- 52:21Speaker 1: January twenty seventh.
- 52:22Speaker 2: It's you.
- 52:23Speaker 1: It's Keith Oberman and Mozart. I mean, that's a great trifecta,
- 52:27Speaker 1: and Chris Collins.
- 52:28Speaker 7: But you want to have four, you know.
- 52:30Speaker 1: You know the Mount Rushboard this is awesome, Boots, thanks
- 52:32Speaker 1: so much man, Happy drills.
- 52:34Speaker 7: Any time boys piece.
- 52:44Speaker 2: So if Ian sixty on, I like me, that's right.
- 52:47Speaker 1: A warm and affectionate new documentary all about the great
- 52:49Speaker 1: Canadian actor John Candy. It's currently available on Amazon. JD
- 52:53Speaker 1: hasn't gotten a round of seeing it yet. Me and
- 52:55Speaker 1: Tal have seen it, and I really enjoyed it.
- 52:57Speaker 3: I thought, how do you know I haven't seen it.
- 52:59Speaker 2: I can just tell you right now, you're not. You're
- 53:01Speaker 2: not keen on it. You used to need to see
- 53:05Speaker 2: one battle after another.
- 53:05Speaker 1: My friend, let's get I saw it, okay, so let
- 53:08Speaker 1: me give me your review of that first.
- 53:10Speaker 3: Uh, A little bit interesting timing with what's going on
- 53:13Speaker 3: with Ice, Yeah, and I think a little bit too
- 53:16Speaker 3: on the nose, you know, promoting of attacking. I don't know,
- 53:21Speaker 3: it was a little bit weird for me. One thing
- 53:23Speaker 3: I said is I have toyed with the idea of
- 53:27Speaker 3: going as Leonardo DiCaprio for Halloween because his his like
- 53:33Speaker 3: when he's in the bathrobe with the shades. But I'm like,
- 53:37Speaker 3: I am the biggest Panicio del Toro fan, like I
- 53:41Speaker 3: think he is, oh his range of like what he
- 53:46Speaker 3: can do serious to like that subtle comedy he did
- 53:50Speaker 3: you know You're a bad ombra. I just think his
- 53:53Speaker 3: that whole scene of when they're coming in to find
- 53:57Speaker 3: him and he's kind of moving everybody around in the
- 53:59Speaker 3: same time he's getting Leonardo DiCaprio out. He's like getting
- 54:04Speaker 3: forty five illegals out and all these kids out before
- 54:08Speaker 3: they get deported. And then Leonard Carber ends up falling
- 54:11Speaker 3: off the roof and getting Tasery goes, what happened? He goes,
- 54:13Speaker 3: your guy got tasered? Bro that what the fuck? I
- 54:18Speaker 3: just I thought it was great. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly.
- 54:21Speaker 3: I just didn't like the undertone stuff. But I enjoyed
- 54:23Speaker 3: the movie thoroughly.
- 54:24Speaker 1: All right, as long as you appreciate the filmmaking. Me
- 54:26Speaker 1: that great action sequence at the end, obviously, all the performances.
- 54:29Speaker 1: How about Sean Penn didn't even mention, Oh god, he
- 54:31Speaker 1: was une.
- 54:33Speaker 3: Me and Joe looked at each other and were like,
- 54:35Speaker 3: he is so deranged, and it is so funny that.
- 54:39Speaker 2: He's got this black women.
- 54:40Speaker 3: He's just oh, this weird, this weird him doing the
- 54:43Speaker 3: DNA scene and just look your mother just so good.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Deserves An Oscar just for that walk alone, I mean,
- 54:50Speaker 1: unbelievable the way.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Then there's some weird, you know, contingent of old white
- 54:55Speaker 3: guys that are trying to ethnically cleanse the.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Word Christmas Gable.
- 55:04Speaker 3: And he got his dick dirty, and he got his
- 55:07Speaker 3: dick and he likes that they Revere's Saint Nick like
- 55:11Speaker 3: Santa clauses this all knowing it's just so good. It's
- 55:15Speaker 3: so funny trying to.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Get the password, and eventually he's got I say, what
- 55:20Speaker 1: kind of pussy do I like?
- 55:22Speaker 3: Mexican shaved, Mexican shaped, and he goes, I love that
- 55:28Speaker 3: he's trying to tell he's trying to walk him into
- 55:30Speaker 3: the password and he's calling you, motherfucker. Or even the
- 55:34Speaker 3: first time he calls in and they're like, what's the
- 55:36Speaker 3: coordinates and he's like, He's.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Like, I've got a lot of He's like, I've done
- 55:40Speaker 2: a lot of.
- 55:40Speaker 3: Drugs for twenty years. Please help me. I just like,
- 55:44Speaker 3: please help me. Oh it's because what do you think
- 55:48Speaker 3: about it? Like if you had this crazy, elaborate, like
- 55:53Speaker 3: go bag plan, yeah, set up for twenty five years
- 55:56Speaker 3: and he just kept living your life and you got
- 55:58Speaker 3: to that moment for sure, we'd all forget about it
- 56:01Speaker 3: because we'd all be like, wait a minute, because you
- 56:03Speaker 3: get so comfortable thinking nothing's gonna happen, right, and then
- 56:06Speaker 3: it happens and he's like, I don't know, I've been
- 56:07Speaker 3: doing drugs for toy because I didn't think it would happened.
- 56:10Speaker 3: Oh so good.
- 56:12Speaker 2: I'm glad you enjoyed it.
- 56:12Speaker 3: Sorry, yeah, I really enjoyed it. I'm sorry I didn't
- 56:14Speaker 3: bring it up last week.
- 56:15Speaker 2: No, it's all good as far as John Candy is concerned.
- 56:18Speaker 1: Listen, he was a wonderful actor obvioumazing, hilarious and a
- 56:21Speaker 1: great proud Canadian god from Toronto. Don Lim's one of
- 56:24Speaker 1: the great achievements of his life. Was a co owner
- 56:26Speaker 1: of the Toronto Argonauts. And they said, like, as a kid,
- 56:28Speaker 1: he really wanted to play football.
- 56:29Speaker 2: That was his dream. Knee injury, literally lost his kneecap,
- 56:33Speaker 2: Like that was it. He's done. But that ends up
- 56:34Speaker 2: being an actor.
- 56:35Speaker 3: And I really enjoyed Shawn Johnson.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go, very good.
- 56:39Speaker 1: I enjoyed the collection of interviews, especially when the fellow Canadians.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Marty Short is always great, Gene Levy's fantastic The movie begins.
- 56:47Speaker 2: You know, Catherine Harris talked about him.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Tom Hanks is very good, Bill Murray, so I thought
- 56:50Speaker 1: all the remembrances were really smart. I liked the clips
- 56:52Speaker 1: and seeing what a great actor he was playing trains
- 56:54Speaker 1: of Anobiles on my favorite comedies, Steve Martin tells a
- 56:57Speaker 1: couple of good stories. The title I like it comes
- 56:59Speaker 1: from Pta, not Paul Thomas Anderson, and just the fact
- 57:02Speaker 1: that he had such pathos tal I thought.
- 57:03Speaker 2: One of the best moments was from Chris Columbus, the
- 57:05Speaker 2: director of Home Alone.
- 57:06Speaker 1: He talks about the ending of plane chains and otmobiles
- 57:08Speaker 1: and it's not like Charlie Chaplin City Lights, right, a
- 57:11Speaker 1: great comedium, but you had a guy who has that
- 57:13Speaker 1: gravitas that he can play with those dramatic moments. My criticism
- 57:17Speaker 1: movie is this as enjoyable as it was? Very one note,
- 57:21Speaker 1: Candy was a great guy, affectionate, loving kind of waiters
- 57:25Speaker 1: kind of people, and that's kind of it. And Murray
- 57:26Speaker 1: even makes a joke about it by saying, I wish
- 57:28Speaker 1: I had some more dirt on I wish said some
- 57:29Speaker 1: were negative things about him. Now I understand it's with
- 57:31Speaker 1: the consent of the families. You don't want any negative stuff.
- 57:33Speaker 1: But it reminds me of why Johnny Cash is always
- 57:35Speaker 1: such a great fertile character, because as there was one
- 57:37Speaker 1: set of Johnny Cash.
- 57:38Speaker 2: He walked with God, but party with Satan.
- 57:40Speaker 1: You need people who are a little messy, and John
- 57:42Speaker 1: Candy is the only thing I found revelatory tality. Other
- 57:45Speaker 1: thing I didn't know about it when I read a
- 57:46Speaker 1: book up and I'm called laughing on the outside. It's
- 57:48Speaker 1: a great book by Martin Ellman. Is he really dealt
- 57:50Speaker 1: with the anxiety qrippling anxiety, especially later in his career,
- 57:52Speaker 1: and perhaps that's why he became so.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Big relying on cigarettes drinking.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Well, the funniest lines is after his brother had a
- 57:58Speaker 1: heart attack that someone said him afterwards and he's having
- 58:00Speaker 1: a drinking a cigarette. John's like, yeah, my brother, he
- 58:02Speaker 1: just doesn't take care of himself. So like that in
- 58:05Speaker 1: ability to see what he himself is doing smoking and
- 58:07Speaker 1: drinking it.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Talking with his brother I thought was interesting. So I
- 58:10Speaker 2: enjoyed it. I liked it.
- 58:10Speaker 1: I like to go watch some more John Canny movies.
- 58:12Speaker 1: But I did think it was rather one note tal.
- 58:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean his widow and children are executive producers
- 58:19Speaker 4: on the film, so you know, there wasn't gonna be
- 58:22Speaker 4: not much dirt, not that they're not that it seems
- 58:24Speaker 4: like there was any dirt, Like you said, I mean,
- 58:26Speaker 4: Bill Burry opens the film by basically talking about how
- 58:29Speaker 4: this guy was like universally beloved and was one of
- 58:32Speaker 4: the all time good guys in Hollywood, which is can
- 58:35Speaker 4: be hard to come by, and that you speaking of
- 58:37Speaker 4: his anxiety that you mentioned. The big takeaway for me,
- 58:41Speaker 4: which is pretty interesting. I thought was just the grinder
- 58:45Speaker 4: that is, being like a huge celebrity and it just
- 58:48Speaker 4: never ends. This guy was in horrible health emotionally and
- 58:52Speaker 4: physically and just had to keep going and going and
- 58:56Speaker 4: churning out one project after another. And I'm going to
- 58:59Speaker 4: do this guy favor and make an appearance in his film,
- 59:01Speaker 4: and I have you know, I'm gonna work on this.
- 59:03Speaker 4: And he you know, he supported his both obviously his family,
- 59:08Speaker 4: but also his brother and his mother financially. So he
- 59:11Speaker 4: has all these people that he has to support and
- 59:13Speaker 4: he just has to keep.
- 59:14Speaker 5: Going and going and going.
- 59:15Speaker 4: And he clearly felt that there was not you know,
- 59:19Speaker 4: taking a break wasn't an option, especially back then in.
- 59:22Speaker 5: The nineties where we weren't having.
- 59:23Speaker 4: Mental health conversations, right, So I found that really fascinating.
- 59:28Speaker 4: Just it gave me a really new appreciation for what
- 59:31Speaker 4: he must have been going through, especially towards the end
- 59:34Speaker 4: of his life when it looked like things were pretty
- 59:36Speaker 4: hard for him.
- 59:37Speaker 2: Yeah. I like the fact his son so that he's
- 59:39Speaker 2: been in therapy. He's like, I credit my dad for that.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Like he was open to the fact he was in therapy.
- 59:42Speaker 2: So like that was the time, as you said, people
- 59:44Speaker 2: weren't talking about that. Now you can say that nobody
- 59:45Speaker 2: blinks an eye. I'm like, Oh, good for you.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Hope you're getting the health you want. His dad didn't
- 59:48Speaker 1: want medication, you know. Wagon Ze S was not a
- 59:50Speaker 1: good film. To the end of his life, he talked
- 59:52Speaker 1: to the fact he's walking with the actress and am
- 59:54Speaker 1: I'm having an anxiety attack? Just need a second a
- 59:55Speaker 1: slow down? Remarkably prolific as well to how thirty movies.
- 59:58Speaker 1: He died at the age of forty three. I would
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: have liked the film critic of the movie because at
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: one point they have some interviewers mentioning how many turkeys
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: and bombs he had. As you mentioned, doing favors for
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: friends nothing but trouble, all the worst movies ever, Like
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: early nineties, there were some awful movies.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: I think a film cir would be interested to say, listen,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: I liked him.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: He was a good actor in a good presence, but
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: I wish he'd a little more selective with some of
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: these scripts.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: Yeah, that was roughing seeing all these interviews, the number
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: of interviews where people either ask him about his weight
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: or making crappy movies, and you could see that it.
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: Was something that affected him. I mean it hurt.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: It hurt.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: He seemed like a very sensitive, you know, loving, open
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: kind of person and hearing these things probably yeah, you know,
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: and then having a blasted out all over the world
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: on television. You know, these were really vulnerable moments for him.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: It was very interesting to see how he had to have.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: It was a good word for because Hanks even said
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: he wasn't like drowning him self loathing. But there's one
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: interview Jad the guy says him something about, you know, like,
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: you know, you're a big guy. Who ever think about
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: you know, you're a handsome man. What kind of leading
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: man you'd be if you lost weight? He's like, you know,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: does it bother you? Can He's like, well, no, does
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: it bother you like to tell us what outwardly? You
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: can't be like, yes, I'm depressed with the fact how
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: huge I am. It makes me miserable, which is what
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: the book was really about. Laughing on the outside. But
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: to deal with that in a very public way, you
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: just think, Oh, he's a big comedian, big fact. I
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: can make fun of him, right, there's a mud wrestling
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: scene in stripes, so grabbing his ear, poking at him
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: or he's like he didn't like that, you know what
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I mean.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: But you couldn't really say anything.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Listen comes with the territory. I understand the anxiety piece,
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: but you know one thing i'd say, great quote I love,
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: love me or hate me? You still watched. Yeah, just
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: got to sit with that, mister cam. I wish I
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: could have met him before because would have told him
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: that in spades. But they were still watching their commenting.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: But they're still watching every single one on the top.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: But he's a great actor.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: I loved him, Oh yeah on the documentary on Steve Martin.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: By the way, they didn't mention this in this doc
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: but playing for his ambil is that great last scene
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: where again the movie I think goes to.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: A different level.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: It's it's hysterically funny, but that last one is such drama.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: To when he says, I don't have a home. Marine's
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: been dead for eight years. In the Steve Martin Dock,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: he said, there's actually a page of dialogue that John delivered.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: He goes, it's unbelievable. He goes, it was like brought
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: tears Differen's eyes and he goes. For whatever reason, John
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: hughes in the movie it's only two lines. And because
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: by wish people could see the whole scene. He was like,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: he would have won an oscar was that powerful. And
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: one other quibble JFK tw he's only at five minutes.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: But he's great, rare dramatic role from John Canny. I
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: wish they had mentioned more about JFK working with Olberstone.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: He's really good in that movie Small World.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: But he's very good.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: All right, can I give you one? I mean, listen,
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: John Candy, feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme. Come on, y'all,
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: it's Bob sled time.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Well that's another great point. Cool runnings. They didn't even
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: mention it kind of got glossed over, like hey, cool Runnings.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: People love that movie.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: I was a fantastic what a good, feel good movie.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. They did not really dive
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: into cool rings.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: And he was kind of drama. He played a nice
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: He played a drama role in that, so to speak
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: like he was the serious, hard ass great you know,
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: had some scars on him. But come on, y'all, it's
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Bob said time.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: I'm with you that that's a top five John Kenny.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Before runningsha shaf Daddy has arrived. Tough starts the season
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: for the Islanders, as we talked about, but Matthews starts
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: this season the youngest player in the league. Becomes the
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: youngest defenseman hockey history to record a point in his debut,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: twelve days younger than the previous record holder Scott need
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Tomorrow followed it up with this first NHL goal Saturday
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Night assist on Monday, third eighteen year old defenseman in
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: hockey history after Phil Housley and Jacob Chickman to get
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: points in each.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Of his first three games. You mentioned earlier pattiwa playing
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: him a lot. Early impressions of Shaefe.
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: Well, one thing I'm gonna tell everybody is please relax
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: on the Kal mccarr comparisons. This kid is not Kile mccarr.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: He is nothing close to Kyle mccarr. And as great
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: as this kid is, he will not be Cale mccarr.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: And I am the biggest Matthew Schaeffer fan. Cale mccarr
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: is one of one gonna go down as one of
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: the best defensemen of all time. I've said it, do
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: not compare him to Quinn Hughes as well. I watched
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: TSN A bunch of these numbskulls on TSN. You know
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: they've had great careers on as broadcasters. But comparing him
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: to Kyle McCart and Quinn Hughes is like doing no
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: research on his skating style. The way he moves. His
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: comparables is Thomas Harley, Devon Taves and at his very
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: best a Scottie Needemayer, because he does have a similar
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: skating style. He is not Kill mccarr. He's not a
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: guy that can physically play and dominate you. He's very long,
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: very rangy, very good, straight line. He's not of so
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: much a cutback like Quinn Hughes, like Kill mccarr. He's
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: a straight line defenseman, long, rangy, good, stick. He is
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: going to be a hybrid of Devon Taves and Thomas
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Harley and a better version of both of them. But
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: he will be a hybrid of those two. So please,
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: for the love of God, stop comparing this kid to
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: kill McCarry. Please, I've seen too much of it. It's
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: a disservice to him and putting way too much pressure
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: on him. And it's a disservice to Kle mccarr, who
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: is the best defenseman in the NHL and might go
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: down as one of the best of all time.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: So I said, when your great hot takes ever, you
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: said to me, mccarr will go down as the greatest
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: defenseman in hockey history, better.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Than Bobby or I think so that that's unbelievable.
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: Guy was in the heart trow like he could be
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: in the Heart Trophy conversation in the last couple of years.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the Heart Trophy Bobby or In Chris Pronger.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: But love, but love Matthew Schaeffer. They have. I said
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: it before the season when everybody draft, when people were
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: talking about drafting him and going for me, sah and go,
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: and I said, this kid, injury or not, is a
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: foundational two way defenseman. You do not pass those up.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: You cannot find those good two way defensemen do not
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: grow in trees anymore. The younger this league gets and
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: the more offensively mined it gets, we're losing a lot
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: of defensemen that have that hockey iq. He has it
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: in spades. So this is what was a great pick,
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: and the Islanders did not miss. And uh, I wish
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: him well because he's a very easy kid to root for.
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: We all, I feel like collectively, the whole league, everybody
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: wants him to do so well. So I feel like
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: just that energy everybody's giving him is going to propel him.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: But he's great defenseman, great kid.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Speaking a great defenseman. Brent Burns on Saturday became the
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: eighth defenseman of hockey history to reach fifteen hundred games.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: This is an illustrious list.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Jad He's Adino Chara, my doppelganger, Chris Chellio, Scott Stevens,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Larry Murphy, Ray Bork, Nick Litchman, Ryan Souter. Any special
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: memory stories you can tell us about Burnsey, Oh.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: He's an absolute caveman and a workout freak. He's got
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: that military bag where he's got god knows what I remember.
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: He pulled. We were on the plane once and he
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: had these like he had this like Japanese figurine game
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: he was playing on the plane where it's like you
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: have it's like looks like a there's a platform and
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: you roll these figurines and they open up and then
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: it like connects to your phone or some computer device.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: And just an interesting character. He does everything a little
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: bit different.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: When he was in Minnesota, he had like he had
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: a an owlery as well as like six he had
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: an owlery with like an owlery is like he had
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: a oversized cage of owls. Wow, that had like owls
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: from like Harry Potter their name like Hedwig. He had
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: at one point over two hundred snakes in a like
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: a snake room. He had like I think four to
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: six like legit wolves like wolves wolves he had wolves,
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: uh and just like craziness when he was in Minnesota,
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: like it like he's an interesting character. Once was bit
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: by a cheetah at a at a zoo, which was
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: pretty funny. Got a tattoo of it. But there's stories
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: for Burnsey for days. Me and Tory Mitchell used to
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: try to wrestle him and and choke him out in
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: the room and would chase him around and he would
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: just he plays he's too rough. He's like, you know,
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: he's like that kid at school where you're like, let's
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: play fight, and then he's like, punch you in the nose.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: Just doesn't know his own strength.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Right, kind of like Friendship, that great scene with Tim Robbins,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: he's literally Tim rob he's Tim Robinson in Friendship quite
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: possibly could be.
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: But a great player, man, takes care of himself, great
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: family man. He's got such a great family. His wife
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: sus amazing, his kids just incredible. And what he's done
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: is truly amazing. Because when I was with him in
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: San Jose, he was having some severe like groin issues
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: and he figured it out. And then that guy dedicated
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: to his body and taking care of himself and goes
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: to show you, ma, you get fifteen hundred or over
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: then and hopefully he's uh, I'm pulling for Colorado and
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: him to win a cup.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe hopes he gets that cup. Maybe a big
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: team wolf guy, that's what he had, four to six wolves.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Maybe it just inspired him in something ooh bit.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: By a Cheetah.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Okay, thanks so much for checking out ithell on Scripted.
