- 0:05SPEAKER_01: What's up everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Welcome to another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: Our store.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: See, it's been late night for me already.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: Our show about the intersection between sports and money.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: He's Jeremy Pink, wide awake.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Been working 16 hours today.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So I'm just hanging on.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: But anyway, you've got a number for us, my friend.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: I know you're you're working hard.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: You're working on a new book, uh, which is a very exciting project.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: I can't say what it's about, but it's very exciting.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I'll tell y'all soon.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Uh I I just got in from Europe, so I'm I'm basically yeah, I know I'm A A, I'm extremely fancy, and B, I'm barely awake, so forgive me up front.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Uh the number of this, the number for this week is 493,000.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: That number, according to an article in Front Office Sports, which is an excellent publication, is the amount of money uh allocated to your boy, Mike Elko, from Texas AM, for private jets.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Private jets?
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Uh now, first off, nobody from Texas AM has ever been considered my boy.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: For a big university, I'm just gonna take a very quick aside here.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: They are the whiniest university ever.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: And you know why?
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: This is because they're this huge university, but they're still the University of Texas's little brother.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: And that, and if they and they'll argue that they're not, how they are, they act like a little brother.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Mike Elko is your boy, though.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm convinced of that.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Anyway, 493k.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: 493k on private.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: He's at College Station, which is out literally in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's like an hour and a half from Houston.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, that's that's fair.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: And so probably for him to he's saving time driving from Houston, uh, so he can just get where he needs to go.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: However, is is Bloomington, Indiana in the middle of nowhere?
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think so.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Or okay.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Believe me, it is.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Uh Indiana spent or has allocated$42,000 on private jets in total.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: $42,000.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: So they're just flying to Chicago and South Bend.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: I don't even think they're flying.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't know what they're doing.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know what they're doing.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: $42,000?
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: I don't think you can.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Seemed like they cost like$25,000,000 just to fuel the thing.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Well, I who knows?
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, maybe maybe it was three trips they took to the West Coast.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: I don't know what they did.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Uh well, you know, Signetti's used to being at James Madison, yeah.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: He's used to being at IUPU P UI or P I U or whatever that whatever that school is.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: Too many, too many initials.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, exactly.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: He's used to not having any money.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: So he probably doesn't even know how to do this private jet thing.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like an old person messing with the internet.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, since I'm a grandparent, I can't say it.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: But it's like getting your traditional grandparent to text, and they go, How do you do this thing?
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: I don't know how to text.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Right, right, right.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Um traditional.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: I'm not a traditional grandparent.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think so, yeah.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: But anyway, uh that seems uh, you know, man, in today's world, nothing surprises me with athletic departments and universities who scream poor spend their money on.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, and but you know, at another level, it makes perfect sense to me because we can talk about education all day long.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: I guarantee you, at this at this time uh in the fall when we have a conversation, we'll say enrollment at Indiana is up 75%.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, sure.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: It's all because the football team.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: It's amazing.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Whatever you spent on Signetis$13 million salary and on Indiana football, it was worth it because you are now getting your windfall back.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: He's been paid through it through uh admission and tuition next year.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: His salary's already been paid for.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, of course, of course.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: I'm sure there's a huge number of out-of-state applicants, they pay full freight to go for sure.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: It's because you've got name recognition with a football program now, and it seems like a cool place to go.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Look at how much fun they're having.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Wow, everybody's talking about Indiana.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Hey, I never thought about Indiana before.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Who goes to Indiana?
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow, Joe Buck went to Indiana?
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Maybe I want to go to Indiana.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it happens to every school like that that comes out of the blue.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Listen, I'll charter a private jet for you to Bloomington.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: You can go you can go visit.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Actually, have you ever flyed?
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Have you ever fly private?
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: I have.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Have you?
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: I've only done it one time.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I rarely did it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, the uh rarely.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: The uh uh but if you've ever go to Bloomington, Bloomington is like one of the nicest campuses in the country.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: It's absolutely beautiful.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, I need to hear your private story.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Well, you probably need to hear mine because you you you probably flew private all the time.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: I I have a great, I can't tell the story here.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I have a great private jet story that made international news that I was involved in, but I can't talk about it.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's as soon as this show is over.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll let you know.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you about it after.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, mine is very simple.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: I think the statute of the limitations has run out on mine.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: The Dallas Cowboys were playing the New Orleans Saints Christmas Eve, sometime in the late 90s.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And uh the game was at the Superdome, and after the game, we're doing all the interviews, and we're we're we're in it, and that, you know, 25 years ago, there weren't a thousand people around Jerry Jones at the end of the game.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: It was more like about 10.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: And so he asked the beat writers, he said, Hey, are you guys getting home for Christmas?
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: We're like, nah, we're all leaving in the morning.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: He goes, I tell you what, uh, me and my family are about to go home to Dallas, I'll send a jet back for you, and you guys can take my jet home.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Wow, wow, that's what I said.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Wow, and so uh that's what happened.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Now you're allowed you're allowed to accept that working at the uh I just said the statue of the city.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, I see.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: So since I haven't worked in 20 years, and so we all went and finished writing, you know, turning stories in, and then went and got caught a cab to whatever field they were flying out of and took Jerry Jones's private jet back to Dallas.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Now the tricky part was you it landed at Love Field, which is not Dallas Fort Worth Airport, which is where we all left from.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, but still, you're home Christmas Eve.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: So you just take a cab.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: We all took cabs to the airport, picked up our cars at the airport.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: That's that's great.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: That's that's actually that's actually uh that's that's a great story.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, now we weren't supposed to do that, but the reality of it is, dude, who's who's you can get home and spend Christmas morning with your kids and your family.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, come on, man, stop it.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: And it's not they got their ass kicked that night, so it's not like we took it easy on them.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: So, but uh no, that's uh that was a great gesture from Jerry, and uh it's the only time I flew private.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And I and did you did you like it?
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, I loved it.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: All the drinks and snacks I could eat.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, there you go.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: If maybe if your book's a huge seller, you never know.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: You could be starting to uh fly private next year, you never know.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: So yeah, from yeah, let's see about that.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Because you know, books, books bring in such huge money, so you know it's well, depending on who's writing them, and hopefully I can get into that category.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: Uh and then uh and then we can we can get uh we can make it happen from there.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Um on that note, let's talk about the NCAA tournament.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: There's been some great stuff going on with that.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Uh that buzzer beater.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: You know, I I wore I wore I wore my Duke I wore my Duke fleece in solidarity with Duke.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Fortunately, I was in Spain when it happened.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: I didn't see it happen live.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'm so happy.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let me tell you a very quick story.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: As a veteran sports writer of more than 30 years, I have I have been conditioned over 30, and really more than that if you if you include college.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: Um, I've been conditioned to go to games and just watch it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Like when I go with my kid, he'd be jumping up and down, and I'd just be like watching it.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, um, so very few things excite me or get me to have a reaction, even now, and and I'm a little lax now, but man, I was in my office doing some work, working on this book, and I'm I got the game on, but I'm not really watching it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Now it's the final seconds or oh yeah, you you actually you actually sent me a picture of that, right?
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Look, and I and at the end I go, oh and my wife is like, are you okay?
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: What is wrong with you?
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: It was the most amazing.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: If you watch it, like like five things, six things had to go exactly right in order for that to happen.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: It was it was it was shocking.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: You know where do you remember where you were?
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: If if you weren't now, I was at Duke for the uh Christian Leitner, Christian Leitner thing.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Now, I didn't watch that live either.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: I was at a dinner in Washington, DC, and I and I was at a dinner that was going late, and I was I was I remember uh sitting in the restaurant and going, I gotta watch the Duke game.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: I don't even know what the hell's going on, you know.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: So I walked out and I went to a bar.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: They had a TV at the bar, and I stood at the bar, and the only thing that I saw was the last play of Leitner.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: So I saw the Leitner thing live.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: That's the only thing I saw of that game live.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I remember the play, I don't know where I was.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Uh I will give you my Christian Leitner connection.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: He and my brother went to the same high school.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Five years apart, I think, or maybe ten years apart.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: But they went to the same high school in Buffalo.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: They have my Christian Leitner story.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Great college, great college player.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: And so uh, yeah, how come he didn't work in the NBA?
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, he had a long career, but yeah, he's kind of just a guy in the NBA.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: He was, you know, he was he was so the expect he the expectation of him being a superstar in the NBA didn't happen, but he was like a 15 and 10 guy.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's a oh see, I didn't even realize he was there.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: May I may be overstating it a bit, but he was totally fine in the NBA.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: He was just, you know, it's sort of like, you know, let a customer.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and everybody, everybody disliked the guy.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: It's kind of like again, I mean, not not to veer off topic, but like one of the most underrated basketball players, I think, of the you know, of my lifetime is Rick Barry.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: And he's underrated because everybody hated him.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: But you actually watch him play.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: But he's fantastic.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: It was fantastic.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Isaiah Thomas, extremely underrated, beloved, but now he's hated.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he but but he, you know, he he's almost erased from the last 50 years, and he's one of the best players I you know, one of the best point guards.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: 27 points he scored in the third quarter on one ankle against the Lakers in the playoffs.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: He's he's remarkable.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: So, but uh anyway, anyway, I I uh but it it's amazing how whether a player is liked or disliked impacts the you know the memory of him.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Uh as a friend of mine says, it's amazing who America chooses to forgive.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it it and then when you start thinking about it, you go, you know, you got a point there.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: It's amazing who we decide, they're really not that bad.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and those people we just go, I got sucks thrown away.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Uh so uh NIL payments.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, we have a topic we're supposed to talk about too.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I forgot about it.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man, it's our show.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: We can go with it.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: No, no, we can do whatever we want.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Um, where do you want to go with this?
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Like, Duke is at the top.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: I'm not surprised.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: They had 12 million for NIL.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: What we did is we took we we found something that found the top 16, uh the the Sweet 16 teams, right?
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: And you were ranked by those that you know had the the highest uh you know NIL payments.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: So here's what surprised me off this list.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: It's the top 16 teams.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: I was surprised that UConn's smack dab in the middle at nine and a half.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: I thought they'd be closer to the top.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but but if you look but if you look at it, if you go from like one to eight, Duke is at twelve and Yukon's at 9.5 according to this data.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: That's not a particularly big spread.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: It just it just isn't, you know.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: But I still given their pedigree, but then I thought I bet Danny Hurley is a kind who really doesn't want to spend a lot of money in there, and so at one level I wasn't surprised.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Now, outside of the Sweet 16, so this is just a Sweet 16 NAL money.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: I looked up to see the team that spent the most on NAL money this year.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Or spent the most on NAL this year in college basketball.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Do you know who that is?
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Who spent the most?
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: This is not not suite 16.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: This is just of all the college programs.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: That spent the most by a wide margin, 22 million, according to what I read.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: 22 million.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: That's what I that's what that's the data that I think.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: That's why they're mad at that coach.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's remarkable.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: But what what what it shows what it shows me though is that you know, Iowa, which made the sweet 16, you know, was on the low end.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Nebraska in Nebraska, four and a half five million.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: But you know, you gotta pay, you're gonna have to pay to have any any chance at all to do anything in these tournaments.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: You know, well, that's why the Cinderella has been removed.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: Well, exactly right.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: It's been removed for two reasons.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: One, you gotta pay, and two, the guys who would have been who would have made whatever Cinderella mid-major great, they all got paid to go play it.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Alabama, Arkansas, Ohio State, Michigan, whoever.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: So they're not staying at the mid-majors.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you got and you and you look and you look at the Sweet 16, if you actually look at it, you got Duke, which is a little bit of an outlier for in college basketball, but then you've got you know, Arkansas, a large state school, Michigan, a large state school, Arizona, Alabama, Tennessee, Yukon, Illinois, Purdue is you know what I mean?
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: These are all large state schools.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: These are all large state schools, or all that's what it said, that's what I got out of this, which is to say these are these are the these are the schools that have the biggest alumni basis and therefore the biggest amount of potential money to spend on.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: It's just a numbers game.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: If you got 75, I mean, if you got seven million alumni.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: It's like, but it's like it's like when you follow, it's like when you watch uh when you follow high school sports.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: The high schools with the biggest enrollments are generally gonna be the best team because they have the most, you know, they're gonna you're gonna find better players out of a school of 4,000 than you're out of a school of 300.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: And and what and and so these enormous schools have so many alumni, and this is really what this is really what's fueled, I think, the the rise of the Big Ten in the last five years.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: You can say that.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think that that's what that's what kind of leaped out to me.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: And I think Duke is kind of an outlier here.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: St.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: John's too.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: St.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: John's too, but St.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: John's is you know, New York City money.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: It's like the only New York City team, which is there, yeah.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: So there those are the but that's it.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: It's like all they're all large public schools, with the exception of uh Duke and St.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: John's.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: It's uh Houston.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Houston, uh is Houston Houston's uh public, aren't they?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Or are they private?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Houston's Houston's a large Houston's a large school, but Houston also is you know has a long basketball tradition, you know.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, not long, but they've you know they got you know, you your other boy, Guy Lewis, uh, you know, of the fly slam fly slamma jamma era.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Right, right, right.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: You know, where he was he was around, he was there for years, uh, but you know, they always had a good program, and it's it's so I I kind of look at Houston as kind of a smaller big school.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: I was trying to see what their enrollment was, because I have no idea.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: They're pretty big.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're they're they're big.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: And also, you know, the alumni in Houston are likely to be you know related to the oil or the energy energy.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I underestimated it, man.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: They got 49,000.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you also have you know, you also have uh, you know, energy and oil money.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: So it doesn't surprise that doesn't surprise me either.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: I uh that's really what it's really interesting what I got out of it.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: But I think you hit on I think you hit on a really critical point, which is that the days of the Cinderella are over.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Now what's but what's really again not surprising is the television ratings of the NCAA tournament this time are some of the some of the highest they've been in years and years and years.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: And I think that's because there's a lot of big glamour schools and people follow them.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Um you know what?
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: I'm uh I have not liked college basketball in a while, haven't not followed it in several years.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Several years.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Uh in part probably because we ain't no good.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Um we're average.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Let me say that.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: We're average.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Um we got we have the leading score of Bruce Thornton.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't get me started.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh I would say that the tournament's entertainment value has been pretty good.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: Uh like I've watched the games I've watched have been good games.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Like, aside from the from the uh um you know bizarre ending of your your game, uh the game was good.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: And there have been several good canim blowouts as you would expect.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: But like I expect the final four to be fantastic.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Like I expect those two matchups to be great.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Well, I think Michigan Michigan, Arizona is is gonna be fantastic.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Those are the I've been uh I've been um I'm not saying I'm gonna watch college basketball next year, but I'll give it more of a pass than I have been.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Uh now, this is a very off-topic question with Duke at its 12 million.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: I was unimpressed with Cam Boozer.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Meaning this perspective.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: He's a he looks like a terrific college player, but I'm like translating to the NBA, I agree with you because he didn't look, and that's because the NBA is so athletic.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Now, maybe he's Julius Randall or maybe he's somebody else.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: God, but I was just like, I don't know, I don't see how that game translates.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: He's kind of like a post player in a league where they don't that big, you know.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: See, I went and looked it up.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: I said, well, maybe I don't, maybe he's like 6'11.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: No, no, he's like 6'9.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: There's no way it doesn't look like he has great hops, yeah.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: So he probably plays like a normal 6'9 guy.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, well, you know, you put me on to uh Darius Acuff at he's at R from Arkansas, right?
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: If I recall, yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: His game is gonna be an NBA game.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm saying.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: His game looks like an NBA game.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: And so you look, you look at some of the players, you know, who are likely to be in the top five.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Um, the guy from BYU is you know, he's a freak.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's uh you know, he's he's gonna be great, you know, or I'd be surprised.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think this A-Cuff guy is gonna be, you know, fantastic.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Peterson out of Texas, who knows?
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: You know, um, there's oh Kansas.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm sorry, did I say Texas?
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Kansas, yeah.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: But well, I told you I cannot draft a guy who's a self-admitted uh social anxiety loner.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Uh anti-I'm sorry, anti-social loner.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Those were his words describing himself.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: I can't draft that dude.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: But but it's it's uh but I have the same I have the same reaction about uh Cam Boozer.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Now, I also didn't think Cooper Flag was gonna be as good as Cooper Flag was this year.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Cooper Flag.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, Cooper Flag's a baller.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: He's he's he's and he I'm shocked by how good he is.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he hadn't even figured out how to shoot a three yet.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: So he'll go and spend all offseason shooting a three, and in three years he'll be shooting 40% for three with all the other stuff that he does, and he'll be unstoppable.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: But now again, he's very different than Cam Boozer.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: But I I had the same reaction with the you know now.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Let me give you an interesting thought on uh Cam Boozer.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: This is just a thought, I have no idea.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: But you know, way back when, when the Bosa's were at Ohio State, um this point came up with somebody, I can't remember who, and he was saying you have to be very careful of great college athletes, great college players whose fathers played in their particular sport, meaning they're so advanced mentally and with their technique and their footwork because their fathers did it, that they have an even bigger advantage in college and high school.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: He said when they get to the league, the advantage disappears a lot because not everybody is technically trained.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: But if you've been trained by an NBA player since you're six years old, at college, you know things that the other you have tricks of the trade that other kids just don't have because they haven't been exposed to it.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: And he was talking about them as pass rushers, they go deep in their bag in college because most college guys got two moves, they got five.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: And they perfected them because they've been doing them with their dad in the living room since they were four years old.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: So uh that's something else to keep.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Mind with Boozer that you know he may be so technically efficient that his game shows up even better in cod.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So uh I'd be curious to see how he plays in the NBA, and maybe he'll maybe he'll be great, or maybe he'll be just a guy.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: It's again, I mean, from what I see, I I I mean he'll he'll be good in the NBA.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's gonna be a star.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: You know, he'll be he'll be a starter in the NBA, and I'm sure I mean he might be 16 and 10.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, something like that.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and that's fine.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: But you know, in the NBA, for when you get a lottery pick, you're hoping that you're getting somebody who's you know 27 and 14.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: Right, of course.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: 26, 8, and 8.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: So now just on on college basketball, I also looked up to see who are the most highly paid coaches, not not in the Sweet 16, but just in college basketball.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: Um and so I got I I wrote down the top four.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Um Danny Hurley's gotta be in there.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: Danny Hurley is second.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Uh Rick Petino's got to be in there.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: He is not in the top four.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Wow, really?
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: But he's he's he's in the top, he's like five, I think.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: He's right around.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: That swarmy guy at uh Florida there.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: Golden?
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: Uh Golden, no, he's not in there.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: So you know Well, oh, my man at Arkansas has got to be in there.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he is.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: He's number three.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Number one is is when I tell you, it's it's it's sort of hidden in plain sight.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: Bill Self from Kansas.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: I was gonna get to here.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Where my guy is, he's gotta be up there.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: No, he's not.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: And you know who's in the top?
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: And his his because he's at a private university, his salary is estimated.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: Who's it?
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: John Shire from Duke.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, I would have guessed Duke.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so so it's you know, it's again, it goes to Kansas, Yukon, Arkansas, and then the big private school that's the the basketball power.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: It makes it all makes sense.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: It's all the reason I thought it was fascinating, it's all the the NIL has transformed college athletics.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: This is one of the reasons I think Gonzaga will not.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: This is one of the reasons Gonzaga will not continue to do well long term.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: They missed their window.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: You know, and you know, in and if you look at uh you know, if you look at college football and college basketball, look, I mean, just look at the NCAA tournament this year.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: It was like, you know, the Big Ten was dominant in this tournament this year.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Uh you've been talking about that for a minute with the big state schools.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, there Big Ten's about to take over.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Big Ten has taken over.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: You know, because you know, the Auburn's and Vanderbilts and all those.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Well, right.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think what you see is Alabama, again, you have to also look at the composition of the alumni base.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: And yeah, well, your southern universities are much poorer than Midwestern and Mestern University.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: And and so, you know, you look at Alabama.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: You know, the larger big tension is I mean, that's a great question.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: It's it's about the alumni base and just sheer numbers.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: It's exactly right.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: And it's it's you know, the yeah, because you know, the value, I hate to say this, but you know, the value of a Michigan alumni is going to be greater than the value of an Alabama alumni, you know, and there's a lot more of them.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: And therefore, yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: So it's strictly a numbers game.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Fascinating, interesting discussion to see.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: That's what you get at the bottom line on sports, and that's why you should subscribe, rate, and review as soon as possible.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Because who doesn't want more of this good stuff?
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: And five stars only, that's what we expect.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, let's move on to what's your bottom line?
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: You gotta give me a bottom line on this one.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: My bottom line is hey, money talks, everything else walks, and this is a new this is a new landscape because sports, not just basketball, but football and everything else.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, he who has the most dollars will be contending for the most championships.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: Very well said.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: It's pay-to-play, and big universities are going to continue to dominate.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: So moving on, uh, I thought this was interesting because it's the opposite of what we usually talk about uh in terms of salary cap space in the NFL.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And the interesting thing about this is it's the teams with the most cap space pushed into the future.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: And why that's interesting is when you're pushing it into the future, that means you should be trying to win right now.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: Because if you if you picture cap space like a credit card, at some point you got to pay the bill.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: And so you're you're trying to buy today, and I don't mind paying the bill later if I'm walking around with that Lombardi trophy.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: And so if you look at it, at the top five teams, top six teams with money in the future, you look at Philadelphia, it makes perfect sense.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: We're trying to win right now.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: We got these two high-paid receivers, AJ Brown, Dante Smith, we got a quarterback, Jalen Hurts, at least for now.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we got a big time running back, Saquon Park.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: We got offensive linemen making big money.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: We're trying to win right now, and so that's how Howie does it.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: And I don't have any problem with that because it's all about winning, man.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: The NFL is a win state.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: It is, but I think one of the subtleties of pushing the pushing the money out in the future that that I think is important to consider is that it's it's based.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: So let's say you have you know a$20 million cap hit today, yeah.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Okay, in 2026.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Okay you can then and you decide, you know what, I want to push that 20 million to 2031.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Okay the percentage of 20 million that the percentage of your uh of your cap today that 20 million represents is gonna be far greater than 20 million in five years.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: 20 million in five years won't even matter, right?
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: So I think a lot of it is just it's all based on the assumption that money's gonna continue to go up at the same trajectory that it's gone up, and that essentially means that TV rights are gonna go up at the same pace that it's good that's gone up.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: They're absolutely and you know why they're you know, one reason that they're doing that is um it's a uh it's it's a way to keep it moving and stay competitive.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: And you know, the the smartest that's one of the reasons why somebody like Tua, you go, you know what, man, it ain't gonna work.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Let's just take this 99 million dollar cafe.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: And five years ago, they'd have thought you were crazy if you were like, oh my god.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: But the thing is, the thing is that what's interesting about that is that the way Russell Wilson's contract was structured, it was really it it didn't really take into consideration pushing the stuff off in the future.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: So Denver had to just eat the cat, right, eat eat the cat money really quickly.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: Other contracts now contemplate this.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: So usually they're not nearly as big of a hit as as you might think because of exactly the you know pushing everything out in the future.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: But anyway, but your point about these teams, you know, if you're deferring money into the future, essentially, means you're spending, you know, you're you're trying to win today.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: And as you point out, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and then you got Detroit, I had up there, and then Dallas, Denver, and San Francisco.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: So the one that doesn't make sense to me is you know, your Cleveland Browns.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: I guess they're my Cleveland Browns.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: No, no, Cleveland Browns make no sense.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: And even the Cowboys don't make any sense because they're not they're not close to winning.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: You know, like Detroit is close to winning.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Uh Denver can make a case that they're close to winning.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: San Francisco is always close to winning.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Uh Dallas is close to winning in its mind.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: It's not on the field because they got the worst defense in the league and they haven't done anything substantial to fix it this offseason, which means it may be close to the worst next year.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: I I think that Dallas, I think that, I mean, again, way off topic here, but Dallas in that division next year, the Eagles are going to be down.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: I think Washington was a fraud a couple of years ago.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: I just don't think they have a decent team.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: I think the Giants are going to be better, and I think Dallas is the best team in that division.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to disagree with you, but you know what my response to that is?
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: This is a Taylorism I've written over many of the years.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, no, I didn't write this.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: I used to say this on the radio all the time.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: That's a case of the skinniest fat guy.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: No, no, I don't disagree with that.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Because you're still now remember, this is Dallas.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: This is not some other places.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: In Dallas, they ain't hanging no banners for winning the NFC.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: So it's judged by how close are you to a title.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: And you know, I don't have enough, I got vaulted ceilings, and I can't, I still can't go high enough to say how far they are from a title because their defense is atrocious.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Um, but by the way, I don't want I don't want to get off on Dallas.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: But I I was just looking, I was looking at that when I was, I was, I was considering this.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: Now, like Detroit, their window may have closed.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: They may have missed it because now they lost their coordinators, and now they're, you know, they lost it.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: They used to have a two-back tandem that was great.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Now one of the backs is gone.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: And that's that's what happens, man.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: You miss your window, brother.
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: And well, it's amazing because I I think Detroit might be the fourth best team in their division, and if they were in Dallas's division, they would be the best team in that division by far.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: So that's that's your skinniest fat guy argument.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: See, that's what I'm talking about.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm talking about.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: But you ultimately you still got to get where you're trying to go.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, it doesn't, yeah, some roads are more difficult than others, but you still got to beat the best teams to get to the championships.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: So however you want to do it, you still got to deal with certain teams to get there.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: And if you can't deal with them, it doesn't matter whether you won your division, your wild card, it doesn't matter.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: You gotta beat them.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: But I think the thing about the thing about winning, you know, I think you're right about winning, but winning has so many different elements to it.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: You got to get great coaching, you gotta get great players, but you also have to get a really good GM and a GM not just to find the players, but GM to structure the deals properly.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Here's what's most important to me.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, based on 30 years of covering the National Football League, you have to know this sounds very elementary as a business uh owner, um you and a guy who's run businesses, you know this.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: You have to understand what your identity is and your philosophy is.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: I agree with that.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: So many of these teams, their identity and philosophy ebbs and flows with whoever the head coach is.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: Whereas if you look at the Steelers or you look at the Ravens and a couple other teams, they got a philosophy as a as an organization.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: And you're much if you can figure out how to do that, you're much better off than every time we hire Taylor, we run this.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Every time we hire Pink, we run that.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Because just like the Cowboys, every time they hire a Divin Corner, they gotta swap everything out because I need these guys to win.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: And then two years later, hey, these parts don't fit.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: And it's a never-ending battle.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: If you got an organizational philosophy, you draft guys who fit our organizational philosophy.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: Except, except I would I would argue though, that I actually think because of the Steelers' philosophy, it's kind of capped how how much how far they can go.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: Because that there they it is it is not a modern, it is not a modern philosophy, and it's not gonna win much.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: My my uh my disagreement would be I don't know because they ain't no quarterback.
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: But that's the whole point, is that any team right now knows that if I don't get the quarterback right, I'm not gonna be competitive.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Right they they're still believing that I get a good defense and I get a good running game and I get a good line, which is all fair, but they've missed they've missed a quarterback for for 10 years now.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: Well, duh, here's the problem, and this is every team's problem.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: And I I used to tell people this until I was mama would say blue in the face when people are like, Oh, the cowboys gotta get rid of Dak Prescott.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: He stinks that who?
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Who are they gonna replace him with?
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: That's my problem.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Once you get on the journey for a quarterback, you can be like Green Bay, and you go, wow, we got Aaron Rodgers and we got Jordan Love.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: You can be like Dallas.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Hey, we went from Tony Romo to Dak Prescott, it's all good.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Or you can be like the Jets, and Jets ain't had a franchise quarterback since Joe Namath, man.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can be like the Bears.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: They just got one, they think they had one in don't call Jim McMahon a franchise quarterback.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: So Buffalo, they went from Jim Kelly in '96 to Josh Allen in like 2017.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: So, you know, they had Ben Rothensburg for a decade and everything was great.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Now they're on the journey, and it's like how and their problem was kind of like the Cowboys, they never bit the bullet and said, you know what, let's just suck and go get a top five pick if we can find our quarterback.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Because, and we've told you guys before, data shows if you want that dude a quarterback, you're probably going to find him for sure.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: You got to find him in the first round.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Without questioning Tom, Brady, Tony Romo, outliers.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: But if you want that guy, you got to find him in the first round.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: And above that, you really got to find him in the top 10.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: And so if you're not gonna stink bad enough to get in the top 10, you gotta, you, you know, you gotta pray to the football guys for a blessing.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: No, I think that's I think that's totally fair.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: I also look at it like, you know, the the point about identity is I think really important because if you see what Sean Payton did in Denver just in the few years that he's been there, he did a few things.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: One, he said, our I he literally said our identity is gonna be, you know, tough football.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: And and he looked up and he said, you know, Russell Wilson's not the guy.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: Got rid of him, focused on getting Bo Nicks, whether you like Bo Nicks or not.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: If you look at his stats the first couple of years, you know, not too bad.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: And Bo Nicks in Denver would have been in the Super Bowl had he bonex not been injured, you know.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: So he understands what he needs in the team, right?
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Kind of like Bill Parcells did, and so you can go replicate it everywhere you go, right, because you know exactly what works, it's a matter, and when you know exactly what works, it only takes you a certain amount of time to acquire that.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Now, everybody can't do that, otherwise everybody would.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: That's why Sean Payton was is from Bill Parcell's tree, and that's why he understands it.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's it's uh kind of remarkable what he's done there.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: But he got a quarterback.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: He got a quarterback that suited him.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: He got a quarterback that almost no, I don't know how successful he would have been almost anywhere else, but he you know, but it doesn't really matter.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: He landed where he landed.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: No, that's it.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and I don't know for the bottom line for me, man.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: You push that cap space out, baby.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: You better pick up that trophy somewhere along the way, or at least compete for it.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: But bottom line for me is this is about, I think this is about how a general manager is handling the overall payroll and everything.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: And it's on all this is based on the assumption that the salary cap is going to continue to skyrocket in the future.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: If it doesn't, these teams are gonna be in big trouble.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: Now it's that time, it's your favorite time of the show.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: And we have a big disagreement coming that you don't know about uh about the Ohio State Buckeyes and their lack of uh we didn't we didn't get no hardware this fall?
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: This without sports at Ohio State, the big the big four, the women's women's basketball, men's basketball, women's hockey, and men's hockey.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Uh the women's team made it to the uh you know championship game and lost to Wisconsin.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: You know they you know Wisconsin and Ohio State women's hockey have played in the final each of the last four years?
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Did you know that?
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: No, no, I didn't.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: How many have we won?
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: Say again?
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: How many have we won?
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: I think two.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: I think it's two out of the four.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: So it's so Ohio State women made it all the way to the final, which is which is fantastic.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Um Ohio State basketball and uh you know the legend of Bruce Thornton ended, I think, in the second round.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: I think the basketball team did well to get to the tournament.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Based on the talent that they had, for sure.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm saying.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: Um and then and then the uh women's team kind of flamed out in the uh NCAA tournament as well.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: So that's a little disappointing, but Notre Dame's a good team.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: Uh but you plan at the crib, you shouldn't win.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: Now, Hannah Hidalgo, who's on Notre Dame, played not too far from where I live in New Jersey.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: And now my daughter was a basketball player, they never actually played against each other, but uh she was an amazing high school player here.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: Well, she's still an amazing player right now.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, you're not gonna mention our pistol championship.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I didn't even know you.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: I thought that was a joke.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: There's a pistol.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: No, we won the pistol championship.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: What is what is how do you shot it?
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's a shooting.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: It's a shooting thing.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: It's a pistol.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: We rock.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: I think we've won like six or seven in a row.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, hey, look, guns, guns are, you know, guns are prevalent in the Midwest of this country, so it's not surprising.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: Um here's my here's my deal.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: Here's my takeoff that that may upset you.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, I was looking for some for some stuff about the pistol championship while I and I I talked to a friend of mine about this.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Uh not a he's he has nothing to do with Ohio State, uh, but it's he has the same opinion.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: And um the opinion is you know what what fans have to always understand, especially if you go to school like Ohio State, the championship is not your birthright.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: Like you're not they're hard to win.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: And my goal is always, even though it can be very disappointing, my goal is always, are we competing for championships?
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: Are we one of the teams you gotta deal with to get where you're trying to go?
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: And if we are, for me, that's good enough.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Now you want to win one every now and then, but they hard to win, man, because you gotta have some luck.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Your all-time leading scores gotta show up.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean poor Bruce Thornton, yeah.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: And I ain't mad at Bruce because I didn't even know his name three weeks ago.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: But guess what?
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: If I didn't know his name, I wouldn't have been disappointed.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Instead, I'd be like, that's a big game of CC.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: Let's do this thing.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: 10 points though.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: I was disappointed.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: I think that's I think that's I think that's totally fair.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: I I I do think it's uh uh and I do think that the you know, not that anybody cares, but I do think that the women's hockey uh team has been pretty amazing in the last you know four or five years.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: Uh Ohio State Pistol team continued its dynasty by winning it sixth consecutive and seventh overall since 2018 at the national championship in uh Columbia, Missouri.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: The Buckeye has dominated the competition with 6,716 points, beating runner-up army and third place, Navy.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: That's amazing.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: That people that is amazing.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: That that that is that that's actually an incredible stat.
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, baby.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: All right, all right.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: I will next time I'm in Columbus, and if there's a pistol gear.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: We need some gear.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: No, I'm gonna I'm gonna show up to a pistol, what is it, a duel, a tournament, a shooting match.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: I don't even know what that is.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a pistol, yeah.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: It's the pistol and rifle championships.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: The pistol and rifle championships.
- 42:38SPEAKER_02: So now, what I will say in the Olympics, do you ever watch the biathlon in the Olympics?
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: Hey man, I covered the biathlon in in 2010.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: I was a big fan of the biathlon.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: I love the biathlon in the Olympics.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: Man, you gotta get your heart rate, you gotta you gotta walk, you gotta lower your heart rate, and you gotta get this fight.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Hey, it's yeah, I thought I think it's so I'm I'm I'm warming to the idea of them being pistol champions.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: I didn't even know they had a pistol team.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: You know, hey man, six-time champions, baby.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: There, there you go.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: This is my suggestion.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: Are you wearing your Ohio State pistol team shirt or not?
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: No, no, I was gonna, but my suggestion is if you want to get your kid a scholarship, start training them on a gun when he's about three.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: Always good, always good to give children guns.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: Very good advice.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so see, he's that beat that.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: Uh wow, Ohio State pistol stuff.
- 43:29SPEAKER_02: Doesn't it's actually not surprising if you think about it.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: Ahead of army and navy.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm telling you.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: Maybe not so much navy, but ahead of army is pretty impressive, you know.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: Uh there's a joke there, but I'm not gonna tell it.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Uh that note, uh, he's Jeremy Pink and John Jacques Taylor.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: Thank you for hanging out with us on the uh bottom line of the sports, and we'll see you next week.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: All right, thanks everybody.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: We'll see you next week.
