- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:20Speaker 4: And if you are a sad or confused football fan,
- 0:23Speaker 4: you're in the right place.
- 0:24Speaker 5: Yeah, and I'm in charge of clock management on this
- 0:26Speaker 5: show always. Just get that going forward. Bruce Feldman, the
- 0:29Speaker 5: college football weekend from The Athletic. He'll join us in
- 0:31Speaker 5: a little bit. But Sunday, I think we have to
- 0:33Speaker 5: start with the negative. We want to be positive.
- 0:35Speaker 6: I think we have to start with the negative.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Okay, we'll get to my Philadelphia Eagles in a second.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Because as crazy as that ending was, the ending of
- 0:41Speaker 4: the Giants-Commanders was one of the craziest endings in NFL history.
- 0:45Speaker 4: 27-27 tie.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Here's how it ended, Paul. So there's 12 seconds left
- 0:50Speaker 3: of the game.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Commanders have the ball in Giants territory, run this play,
- 0:55Speaker 4: trying to get to the line, and they don't make it.
- 0:58Speaker 5: There are so many things to pick through on this play.
- 1:00Speaker 5: I've watched this play now 20 times. It feels like
- 1:02Speaker 5: the offensive linemen aren't initially scrambling to get up because
- 1:05Speaker 5: they think, that Jaden Daniels is going to throw it
- 1:07Speaker 5: out of bounds or throw it to a receiver going
- 1:09Speaker 5: out of bounds, which is the only play you would
- 1:11Speaker 5: call in that situation.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, it makes no sense.
- 1:14Speaker 4: He should have thrown it out of bounds, but apparently
- 1:16Speaker 4: Jaden Daniels either lost track of the time, didn't know
- 1:19Speaker 4: the play. Something completely went haywire with the commander's quarterback.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Let me ask you, the play before, they run the
- 1:25Speaker 5: ball and they let it go from 50 seconds down
- 1:27Speaker 5: to 20 seconds.
- 1:28Speaker 6: That was on purpose, correct?
- 1:30Speaker 4: Oh, I believe so. I mean, if they hit the
- 1:32Speaker 4: field goal in overtime, they win the game, but they
- 1:34Speaker 4: didn't want any time in case they missed it for
- 1:36Speaker 4: the Giants to come down and kick a field goal.
- 1:38Speaker 4: So they were running out the clock, but somebody lost
- 1:40Speaker 4: track of it. When I say somebody, I mean all
- 1:42Speaker 4: 11 guys lost track of where the clock was.
- 1:45Speaker 5: But I mean, this is not that confusing of a play.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Us at home, we were sitting there at home going, okay,
- 1:49Speaker 5: they're going to run this down. They're going to snap
- 1:51Speaker 5: it with 20 seconds. They'll throw an out pattern, and
- 1:54Speaker 5: if it's not there, you throw it out of bounds,
- 1:56Speaker 5: and you run your guys on to kick it. It's
- 1:57Speaker 5: like We at home are so conditioned to this, and
- 2:00Speaker 5: an NFL quarterback also has to be conditioned to this.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Yeah, it seems pretty simple. You know, when I was
- 2:04Speaker 4: watching at home, I was confused. I was like, is
- 2:06Speaker 4: there something I'm missing right here? Is there another period coming?
- 2:09Speaker 4: What's going on? But one thing, it wasn't just Daniels.
- 2:12Speaker 4: The whole team was very, very confused. And you know
- 2:15Speaker 4: how I know that. Because he's down.
- 2:17Speaker 3: No one's rushing him right now. No one is saying,
- 2:19Speaker 3: get up as fast as you can.
- 2:20Speaker 5: And he's not calling timeout like a Chris Webber thing
- 2:22Speaker 5: where he didn't have any. He doesn't think he has them.
- 2:24Speaker 5: So he knew what he had and didn't have. The
- 2:27Speaker 5: other thing is they let him back in the game.
- 2:29Speaker 5: They let the Giants back in the game.
- 2:30Speaker 6: It's overtime. Now a national TV audience has all switched over.
- 2:33Speaker 3: To the game.
- 2:34Speaker 5: So their faux pas is on a national audience to
- 2:37Speaker 5: chop up. What do you think of Dan Quinn after
- 2:40Speaker 5: the game putting the blame on him? Is that faux
- 2:41Speaker 5: or is that real?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Oh, to me, it's 100% on Dan Quinn.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Really?
- 2:45Speaker 3: 110% on Dan Quinn. Go ahead. No, go ahead. Well, listen.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Somebody's got to be in his ear saying you got
- 2:56Speaker 4: to do exactly this on the play. So they have
- 2:58Speaker 4: the communication system. And if you're the head coach, it
- 3:01Speaker 4: starts with you. Situational football. Why were the Patriots so
- 3:04Speaker 4: good for so many years? Because Bill Belichick trained them
- 3:07Speaker 4: to be great at situational football. Dan Quinn. Listen, you
- 3:11Speaker 4: already blew the 28-3 Super Bowl lead. This was just
- 3:13Speaker 4: as bad. You are not a great situational football coach
- 3:17Speaker 4: if you look at history of the NFL.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Okay, so you're saying he doesn't have his team prepared
- 3:21Speaker 5: for this moment.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Two things.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Prepare for that moment, and he doesn't have somebody screaming
- 3:26Speaker 4: to the team, do not do what you just did.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Throw the ball out of bounds.
- 3:29Speaker 5: But there's no way they called a play where Jaden
- 3:32Speaker 5: Davis runs, looks around, and just goes three yards and
- 3:35Speaker 5: gets buried. They had to call a play. Jane Daniels
- 3:38Speaker 5: is not a rookie, and I wouldn't even let a
- 3:40Speaker 5: rookie off on this one. Jane Daniels clearly had to
- 3:42Speaker 5: know before that play started there were two options. You
- 3:45Speaker 5: throw it out of bounds, you throw it to a
- 3:47Speaker 5: receiver heading out of bounds. He chose neither of them.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Are you sure a coach was in his ear saying that?
- 3:52Speaker 5: Well, I think the play call is the play call,
- 3:54Speaker 5: and he has to know at this juncture. I put
- 3:55Speaker 5: this completely on Daniels because he has to know he
- 3:59Speaker 5: can throw it anywhere. He can ground it. A grounding
- 4:01Speaker 5: penalty would be better than this. He could take a
- 4:03Speaker 5: delay a game if he doesn't know what's going on.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I think Daniels, and he has not had a good
- 4:07Speaker 5: year on or off the field, I think he got
- 4:09Speaker 5: caught up and wasn't paying attention and either didn't know
- 4:12Speaker 5: the situation or didn't check the clock before he snapped
- 4:15Speaker 5: the ball.
- 4:15Speaker 4: All right, let's hear from the Commander's quarterback who tried
- 4:17Speaker 4: to explain it after the game.
- 4:20Speaker 5: We've got to stop the clock. We've got to know
- 4:21Speaker 5: his ozone situation.
- 4:22Speaker 7: We've got to relay that as an offense.
- 4:26Speaker 8: It starts from everybody top down, but ultimately it's on me.
- 4:30Speaker 8: It does not fall on him. It's an outside throw
- 4:33Speaker 8: or a clock. You know, those are the two, you know,
- 4:35Speaker 8: out-of-bounds throw or a clock. And it has to come
- 4:39Speaker 8: from me. I don't even have to put them into
- 4:40Speaker 8: that spot. I can do that earlier. And we can finish,
- 4:43Speaker 8: you know, the kick early. We don't need to gain
- 4:45Speaker 8: more yards.
- 4:45Speaker 7: So that's on me.
- 4:46Speaker 8: I was going to say, why not just spike the ball?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Correct.
- 4:49Speaker 8: Is that not communicated to him? No, we're just trying
- 4:53Speaker 8: to gain more. We don't need to. Like, it's easy
- 4:55Speaker 8: enough to say, hey, man, let's clock it right here.
- 4:57Speaker 2: We're early enough.
- 4:58Speaker 8: Go get it.
- 4:59Speaker 7: Okay.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Wow.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Let's play the blame game there because it felt like
- 5:02Speaker 5: different people were being blamed at different parts. Jay Daniels said,
- 5:06Speaker 5: it's about what's coming into me. That's blaming either the
- 5:09Speaker 5: offensive coordinator or the coaching staff.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Well, Dan Quinn said it there. They could have just
- 5:13Speaker 4: spiked the ball, but that was not the play call.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Now, is that Dan Quinn calling out the play call
- 5:17Speaker 5: by his OC? Because Dan Quinn is a DC.
- 5:19Speaker 3: What?
- 5:20Speaker 4: Even if that's the case, that's on the coaching staff,
- 5:22Speaker 4: and that ultimately is on Dan Quinn. Dan Quinn, I think,
- 5:24Speaker 4: was trying to get four or five more yards for
- 5:26Speaker 4: his kicker, which they didn't need. Because in today's NFL...
- 5:29Speaker 4: Kickers are pretty automatic from the 40s. I think it
- 5:31Speaker 4: was about getting a few more yards, and the play
- 5:34Speaker 4: wasn't there. They never should have tried that.
- 5:36Speaker 5: How bad of an offense is this? You can't get
- 5:38Speaker 5: rid of your quarterback. You can get rid of your
- 5:40Speaker 5: head coach. It seems a little early. Is this a
- 5:43Speaker 5: fireable offense?
- 5:44Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Really?
- 5:45Speaker 3: Oh, without a doubt.
- 5:46Speaker 4: If the coach is 4-1 after this, then it's fine.
- 5:50Speaker 4: But the commanders are going nowhere. Ever since they made
- 5:53Speaker 4: the NFC title game two years ago, they've been going
- 5:55Speaker 4: slowly downhill. The roster's not great. Darren Quinn doesn't seem
- 5:58Speaker 4: to be doing anything to save this roster. I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 4: you could argue that Jaden Daniels has been hurt, but
- 6:03Speaker 4: you saw it there. The fact that they're a defensive
- 6:05Speaker 4: team who's not playing any great defense and certainly didn't
- 6:08Speaker 4: play great defense in the fourth quarter to let the
- 6:09Speaker 4: Giants back in.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Sometimes I think management makes the decision to fire a
- 6:13Speaker 5: head coach at a certain point in the season, and
- 6:14Speaker 5: then whatever happens, happens. I think they will make a
- 6:17Speaker 5: decision on this guy and his future real soon. They
- 6:19Speaker 5: may let the next four or five weeks play out,
- 6:21Speaker 5: but you've got to think to yourself, this is not
- 6:23Speaker 5: the guy, and it's still an attractive place to coach.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 6:28Speaker 6: We'll get into that after the break.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Why is that attractive? But I think the ultimate lesson
- 6:32Speaker 4: here is the head coach. It's always the head coach.
- 6:34Speaker 4: I don't care who messed up on the field. It's
- 6:37Speaker 4: the head coach's job to make sure everybody is doing
- 6:39Speaker 4: their job, and they were not.
- 6:40Speaker 5: All right, let's brighten things up here. Let's send it
- 6:41Speaker 5: out to London. And that game was a pretty decent game.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Looked like the Eagles were going to win. Your Eagles
- 6:46Speaker 5: were going to take care of the Jaguars. They get
- 6:48Speaker 5: the late score. All is well. They're going to kick off,
- 6:51Speaker 5: and then not so fast, Perloff.
- 6:52Speaker 6: What happened?
- 6:53Speaker 4: Okay. Okay. So the Eagles hit what looked like the
- 6:55Speaker 4: game-winner with eight seconds left.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Did you tweet out?
- 6:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I tweeted out that the Eagles win. I learned
- 7:00Speaker 4: some important lessons here. I have no problem with that tweet.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Because what team kicks a line drive to set up
- 7:06Speaker 4: the perfect return after the return game? The return defense
- 7:10Speaker 4: has been terrible all day long. Of course, Cam Little,
- 7:13Speaker 4: the Jaguars, hits the game-winner. I never saw this coming
- 7:17Speaker 4: because I did not think the Eagles would make a
- 7:18Speaker 4: kickoff like that. That kickoff was terrible. They should have
- 7:22Speaker 4: kicked it out of the end zone. And afterwards, Nick
- 7:24Speaker 4: Sirianni admitted as much. That was a coaching mistake.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Okay, so when I'm watching that, I actually think the
- 7:30Speaker 5: Eagles did the right thing. At the time, I thought
- 7:31Speaker 5: they did the right thing because if you kick it
- 7:33Speaker 5: out of the end zone, that means the Jaguars have
- 7:36Speaker 5: the ball with eight seconds and no timeouts. But Trevor
- 7:39Speaker 5: Lawrence can throw like a 20-yard out and set up
- 7:41Speaker 5: his field kicker, Cam Little, who's, if not the longest kicker,
- 7:44Speaker 5: top three in the sport.
- 7:45Speaker 4: But they don't have a timeout, Paul. How are they
- 7:47Speaker 4: going to throw a 20-yard out?
- 7:48Speaker 5: Well, I think there's more odds of that than a
- 7:51Speaker 5: 50-yard kickoff return by Amir Abdullah. So the deep kickoff,
- 7:55Speaker 5: or the deep-ish kickoff, puts you in a position where
- 7:57Speaker 5: all you've got to do is make a normal kickoff
- 7:59Speaker 5: coverage at the 40 or the 35, and you go home.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Because now Trevor Lawrence has the ball at, let's say,
- 8:05Speaker 5: his own 40 with four seconds to go, and he's
- 8:08Speaker 5: got to throw.
- 8:08Speaker 2: It 70 yards.
- 8:10Speaker 6: I think this is the right call.
- 8:11Speaker 3: No, no.
- 8:12Speaker 4: If they kicked it out of the end zone, the
- 8:14Speaker 4: Jags would have had the ball with eight seconds left
- 8:16Speaker 4: at the 35-yard line. That means the Eagles defenders just
- 8:19Speaker 4: have to line up on the sideline so there's no
- 8:21Speaker 4: sideline throw. Because any play inbounds, it doesn't get in
- 8:24Speaker 4: the end zone, and the game is over.
- 8:24Speaker 5: I think this is a classic example of the Eagles
- 8:27Speaker 5: players thought the game was over as well. It's like, hey,
- 8:29Speaker 5: are you going to tackle me? Are you going to
- 8:30Speaker 5: tackle me?
- 8:30Speaker 6: Nobody tackled him.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yeah, and the kick wasn't great. You have to get
- 8:33Speaker 4: some air underneath it so your coverage can get down there.
- 8:35Speaker 4: That was a mess. And wait, let's get to the
- 8:37Speaker 4: blame game here. I think it's obviously Sirianni, if you're
- 8:40Speaker 4: going to blame anybody.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Yeah, you can't call the special teams coach because clearly
- 8:43Speaker 5: you're going to cover that with Sirianni.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Which seat is hotter, Sirianni's or Quinn's?
- 8:49Speaker 4: So Sirianni has had a bit of a hot seat
- 8:52Speaker 4: issue because the offense looks terrible.
- 8:53Speaker 6: He's been on and off the hot seat before.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Yeah, the team just doesn't look good right now.
- 8:57Speaker 4: But I'll tell you right now, Nick Sirianni outcoached Liam
- 8:59Speaker 4: Cohen pretty.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Decisively on Sunday.
- 9:01Speaker 6: That's going to be.
- 9:02Speaker 3: A nice win.
- 9:03Speaker 4: It would have been an amazing win because everybody's heard
- 9:05Speaker 4: on the Eagles that The Eagles just had a lot
- 9:07Speaker 4: more effort than the Jags. They were more organized than
- 9:09Speaker 4: the Jags. They just made one mistake that cost them.
- 9:11Speaker 6: And that's where I'm with you on this.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I think Nick Sirianni did not have as bad of
- 9:15Speaker 5: a day as people are making it out.
- 9:16Speaker 6: He's an easy target.
- 9:17Speaker 4: People really don't like Nick Sirianni nationally.
- 9:20Speaker 3: And locally, he's very polarizing as well.
- 9:22Speaker 5: It's weird.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Usually you're liked either one or the other. He's liked
- 9:24Speaker 6: it neither.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 3: All right, Paul.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Let's get to helmet stickers for a second here. Because
- 9:30Speaker 4: I have a helmet sticker out of the Jags-Eagles game.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Okay, let's do it.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Parker Washington on the Jags. This guy is elite out
- 9:37Speaker 4: of nowhere. He is unbelievable. He kind of saved the
- 9:40Speaker 4: Jags in that game. He had an incredible touchdown catch.
- 9:44Speaker 4: He's one of the top five receivers in the NFL.
- 9:46Speaker 4: I really believe that. He's a lot like JSN in Seattle.
- 9:50Speaker 3: He can do everything.
- 9:50Speaker 4: He can move the sticks. He's a deep threat. He is,
- 9:54Speaker 4: in many ways, their whole offense. They have a good
- 9:56Speaker 4: running back in Bashal Tootin, but they really need Parker Washington. Otherwise,
- 10:00Speaker 4: this team, in my opinion, is not where they are
- 10:02Speaker 4: right now.
- 10:02Speaker 5: A couple things. Parker Washington, like you said, nobody knows
- 10:04Speaker 5: who he is nationally. He's forcing the issue. Bashal Tootin,
- 10:08Speaker 5: is that how you pronounce his name? He's a really
- 10:09Speaker 5: good running back. Another guy. They have the weirdest star
- 10:12Speaker 5: power on the Jaguars. Their quarterback's a star. Their defensive
- 10:15Speaker 5: back is a star who doesn't play offense that much anymore,
- 10:17Speaker 5: but the rest of their skill.
- 10:18Speaker 6: Position players, nobody knows.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Who do you got?
- 10:21Speaker 5: I got Aaron Rodgers because I didn't think he was
- 10:23Speaker 5: going to get a helmet sticker this year. Three touchdowns,
- 10:25Speaker 5: no picks, carved up the Colts. Not the most exciting
- 10:28Speaker 5: football game I've ever seen, but that was a nice,
- 10:30Speaker 5: clean win for the Steelers. I'm going to predict right now, Pearl,
- 10:33Speaker 5: roll on this one in the control room, the Steelers
- 10:35Speaker 5: are going to win nine or ten games this year.
- 10:38Speaker 6: And squeak into the playoffs and do nothing.
- 10:40Speaker 3: What is that?
- 10:41Speaker 4: Wait, I'm actually going to predict that the sun is
- 10:43Speaker 4: going to rise tomorrow.
- 10:45Speaker 3: And what does that mean? That means nothing. Of course,
- 10:47Speaker 3: they win 9 or 10 games every year.
- 10:49Speaker 6: The safest prediction of all time, 9 to 10 games.
- 10:51Speaker 4: That's barely even a prediction. I'll tell you, Aaron Rodgers
- 10:54Speaker 4: did okay, but wasn't most of his stats on one
- 10:56Speaker 4: Jalen Warren screen pass?
- 10:58Speaker 6: A lot of it.
- 10:59Speaker 5: We don't get into the details here. We just give
- 11:00Speaker 5: out helmet stickers. You know what we have to talk
- 11:02Speaker 5: about before break? 49ers, Mike Evans, career resurgence, 7 for 113.
- 11:08Speaker 5: And what did you think of that game before we break?
- 11:10Speaker 4: Oh, I mean, I think it was a great rivalry.
- 11:12Speaker 4: That's five straight for the road team in the Niners, Seahawks.
- 11:14Speaker 4: I felt like either team could have won. It's one
- 11:16Speaker 4: of those football games that comes down to three or
- 11:18Speaker 4: four key moments. But, again, two great receivers. Mike Evans
- 11:22Speaker 4: and JSN in Seattle were the dominant two players.
- 11:24Speaker 5: No running game for Sam Darnold. It's really starting to show.
- 11:27Speaker 5: You mentioned a couple weeks ago your worst call of
- 11:28Speaker 5: the year. or the offseason was letting Kenneth Walker go.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh.
- 11:32Speaker 6: No running game.
- 11:32Speaker 4: These are the fumbles, and they know how to stop
- 11:35Speaker 4: the Niners. They're the one team out there that can
- 11:37Speaker 4: stop the Niners. They totally shut them down for most
- 11:39Speaker 4: of the game, but eventually the Niners wore them down.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Is that, in your mind, possibly an NFC title game preview?
- 11:45Speaker 5: It should be.
- 11:45Speaker 6: It should be right now.
- 11:46Speaker 4: With the Rams kind of floating out there, too.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Yeah, you trust the Seattle defense, and I do think
- 11:50Speaker 5: Seattle may have to make a move at running back
- 11:52Speaker 5: because they can't worry about a rookie, Jadarian Price, being
- 11:55Speaker 5: healthy and doing a good job.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I can speak for the Eagles here. If they want
- 11:59Speaker 4: to give us a second-round pick for Saquon, us.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Would you broker the deal?
- 12:02Speaker 4: I would broker the deal. Second-round pick for Saquon Barkley,
- 12:05Speaker 4: who has a hamstring injury. But at least have a
- 12:07Speaker 4: guy who's going to hold on to the ball. Seattle's
- 12:09Speaker 4: defense will win it for you. All right, coming up next,
- 12:12Speaker 4: I defend the NFL kickoff rule, and Paulie breaks down
- 12:15Speaker 4: college football and MLB.
- 12:17Speaker 3: And a little Drake May as well. Not so fast.
- 12:19Speaker 6: All right, I like this take here.
- 12:21Speaker 3: The kickoff.
- 12:22Speaker 4: You know what?
- 12:22Speaker 6: I'm going to save it. I'm going to save it.
- 12:23Speaker 6: What do I think about the kickoff?
- 12:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I have enough trouble understanding it.
- 12:27Speaker 6: It took me a couple years.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and then there's that Cooper Cup out of it.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Pearl off. Midday
- 12:36Speaker 5: pick-me-up time. Pearl, watch this catch. This guy's having an
- 12:38Speaker 5: interesting season. He gets into it with the refs last week,
- 12:41Speaker 5: and now look at this.
- 12:44Speaker 3: He's unbelievable. Trey McBride, Cardinals. He is the entire Cardinals offense.
- 12:48Speaker 5: When you look at that catch, there are points in
- 12:50Speaker 5: that catch. That catch took like a minute and a
- 12:51Speaker 5: half to happen. He tips it, and it's out here, and.
- 12:54Speaker 6: He's falling backwards.
- 12:55Speaker 5: You're like, well, this is never going to be a catch.
- 12:57Speaker 5: And I love that review can help in a situation
- 12:59Speaker 5: like that because they called it a catch on the field.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yeah, it was totally meaningless in the game, by the way.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Just so we're clear here. The entire Arizona Cardinals season,
- 13:06Speaker 4: totally meaningless. But Trey McBride, you know, I don't think
- 13:09Speaker 4: they're going to trade him.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Oh, God, no.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I'd like to see him with a contender because he's amazing.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Fantastic player.
- 13:15Speaker 5: You know, we're doing warm takes, but we've got to
- 13:16Speaker 5: talk about the trade they did make with Marvin Hanson.
- 13:18Speaker 6: That'll be later in the program. Let's get to it.
- 13:20Speaker 5: It's warm take time here. Just a little cozy stuff
- 13:23Speaker 5: to get you into your Monday. All right. It was
- 13:25Speaker 5: a very saucy college football weekend, kind of an impactful
- 13:28Speaker 5: college football weekend, and we're due for one.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Georgia took down Alabama. Alabama had a chance to win.
- 13:33Speaker 5: A little P.I. call, non-call at the end of the
- 13:36Speaker 5: game really hurt Alabama. I'm going to go back to
- 13:38Speaker 5: that with Kalen DeBoer. Oklahoma taking down number one Texas.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Oklahoma had a.
- 13:42Speaker 6: Really spotty September.
- 13:44Speaker 5: But you take out, you know, they throw out the
- 13:46Speaker 5: rivalry games, you throw out the records, classic. Texas does
- 13:49Speaker 5: not look like a heavyweight. They look like a mid-level heavyweight,
- 13:52Speaker 5: just not closing anything down. UCLA football is 5-0. Kentucky
- 13:56Speaker 5: football is 5-1. A couple basketball schools playing really well.
- 13:59Speaker 5: And then I want to go back to the Alabama loss.
- 14:02Speaker 5: So one of your wide receivers for Alabama loses his cool,
- 14:04Speaker 5: returns serve in a fight and gets caught by the refs,
- 14:07Speaker 5: costs you 15, and it was a big, big play.
- 14:10Speaker 6: Kalen DeBoer, now.
- 14:12Speaker 5: I don't want to be pick and choose here because
- 14:14Speaker 5: Nick Saban can chew people out and can lose his
- 14:15Speaker 5: cool on the sidelines. But Nick Saban would usually keep
- 14:18Speaker 5: his cool together and pick his spots. Kalen DeBoer lost
- 14:21Speaker 5: his mind when his player did that and took a
- 14:23Speaker 5: swing at someone.
- 14:24Speaker 6: He goes, you lost us the game. The game wasn't
- 14:26Speaker 6: over yet, coach.
- 14:27Speaker 5: You have to keep your cool when others are not
- 14:29Speaker 5: keeping theirs. That would have been a situation where you said,
- 14:33Speaker 5: nod your head, send him over to the position coach,
- 14:35Speaker 5: let the position coach air him out so it's not
- 14:37Speaker 5: on national TV. Look, I'm not saying you can't yell
- 14:39Speaker 5: at players. I'm not, you know, too modern where I
- 14:42Speaker 5: can't see a player get chewed out and yelled at.
- 14:44Speaker 6: But you had a game to win, and you.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Were losing your cool and yelling at this player while
- 14:48Speaker 5: your team was still fighting that fight. So keep your cool.
- 14:50Speaker 5: You had that game. Wait until afterwards to air him out.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Did the fact that that player is getting paid at
- 14:55Speaker 4: NIL change your opinion on that at all?
- 14:57Speaker 5: I would say, yeah. I would say 10 years ago,
- 15:00Speaker 5: airing out a college football player on national TV, You
- 15:02Speaker 5: may have a little more sympathy, but he's a pro.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Pros don't get aired out like this.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 15:07Speaker 4: I think it's a symptom of the NIL era that
- 15:10Speaker 4: there's so many personal fouls. I think guys are not
- 15:13Speaker 4: playing team football all over. A lot of guys are
- 15:15Speaker 4: making it about themselves because they can transfer and they're
- 15:17Speaker 4: already getting paid anyway.
- 15:18Speaker 5: The other thing I would worry about, if I chew
- 15:20Speaker 5: out a player on national TV on the sidelines, What's
- 15:22Speaker 5: that player going to do? Is he going to yell
- 15:24Speaker 5: back at me? Because he makes more than his position coach.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Wow, that player they'd be better off without. Because they
- 15:28Speaker 4: were going over his personal foul. You know, late hits
- 15:31Speaker 4: drive me nuts. And college football, it's been really bad
- 15:33Speaker 4: this season. The worst thing to do to hurt your team. Okay,
- 15:36Speaker 4: I'm going to go back to the NFL for my
- 15:38Speaker 4: first warm take. And it's on Drake May, New England
- 15:40Speaker 4: Patriots quarterback. Do you remember a couple weeks ago, Paul,
- 15:43Speaker 4: when everybody was done with Drake May? Terry Bradshaw and
- 15:47Speaker 4: Patriots broadcaster and former quarterback Scott Zolak said bench him.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Coming into last week's Buffalo game, Drake May had one
- 15:53Speaker 4: touchdown and six picks, and the Pats were 1-2. Since then,
- 15:56Speaker 4: he has completely torn up the Bills and then on
- 15:59Speaker 4: Sunday dominated the Raiders totally, which proves to me one thing, Paul.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Never overreact to the first couple weeks of the season.
- 16:08Speaker 5: But that's what we base our industry on.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's totally preseason for most of these teams.
- 16:13Speaker 3: And you have to look at the schedule, too.
- 16:14Speaker 4: The teams that Drake May struggled against were Seattle and Jacksonville.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Seattle's defense we know is awesome. Turns out Jacksonville's pass
- 16:21Speaker 4: defense is pretty great, too. So you see Drake May's
- 16:24Speaker 4: numbers the last couple weeks. Dude's going to be fine,
- 16:26Speaker 4: it turns out. I was part of the, I wasn't
- 16:29Speaker 4: taking Benjamin like Terry Bradshaw and Scott Zolak, but I
- 16:31Speaker 4: wasn't far off.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Well, there's nothing funnier in this business than September takes
- 16:34Speaker 5: being brought back October.
- 16:35Speaker 6: We talked about that.
- 16:36Speaker 5: But he was playing so poorly, and he didn't play
- 16:38Speaker 5: that great in the playoffs and the Super Bowl. There
- 16:40Speaker 5: was a little bit of a hangover with him. Was
- 16:44Speaker 5: he second for the MVP last year?
- 16:45Speaker 3: Everybody loved that.
- 16:46Speaker 5: And then he kind of limped to the finish, even
- 16:48Speaker 5: while making the Super Bowl. So you're kind of that thing.
- 16:51Speaker 5: He had this awful September. I mean, he looked like
- 16:53Speaker 5: a guy who, like Kryptonite Superman, where he just forgot
- 16:56Speaker 5: how to play this position.
- 16:57Speaker 6: And the past two weeks, it's a complete cleanup.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Well, you know what?
- 16:59Speaker 4: Last year, he was second in MVP voting because he
- 17:01Speaker 4: had the easiest schedule in the NFL. I am sorry.
- 17:04Speaker 4: The Raiders, I know they're getting a lot of hype,
- 17:05Speaker 4: but that defense did not sniff him. He had all
- 17:08Speaker 4: day in the pocket. That's a bad team they beat
- 17:11Speaker 4: on Sunday. So he's good against bad teams.
- 17:13Speaker 5: Which Drake May are we going to see for the
- 17:14Speaker 5: next four weeks?
- 17:15Speaker 6: September Drake May?
- 17:16Speaker 3: Tell me who they're playing. No idea.
- 17:17Speaker 4: If it's a good team, then I do not think
- 17:20Speaker 4: they will do much. If it's a bad team, expect
- 17:22Speaker 4: four touchdowns and one pick.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Well, they play the Jets next week, which means the
- 17:25Speaker 5: game is probably going to be like 14-13 early in.
- 17:28Speaker 3: The first half.
- 17:29Speaker 4: The Jets have somehow attracted monsoons pretty much every other week.
- 17:32Speaker 5: I'll tell you, the Bears' defense will help out a thrower.
- 17:34Speaker 5: They'll make any quarterback look good.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Miami's defense has been pretty gritty, but I assume Drake
- 17:39Speaker 4: May already owns them. Who knows with this? Then he
- 17:42Speaker 4: goes to Germany. I think Drake May is fine. He
- 17:45Speaker 4: obviously settled down. The idea that he was not the
- 17:48Speaker 4: quarterback of the future has already passed. Although, I got
- 17:50Speaker 4: to tell you, the guy who was drafted ahead of him,
- 17:52Speaker 4: Jaden Daniels, might be in some trouble. But again, you
- 17:54Speaker 4: overreact not only to a game, to an entire year.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Drake May, just give it time to settle.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I'm looking forward to contract time with some of these quarterbacks.
- 18:01Speaker 5: Drake May, Bryce Young, CJ Stroud.
- 18:03Speaker 4: I think May is fine. I think Caleb Williams is fine.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Jaden Daniels, I don't know what you do with that.
- 18:08Speaker 6: Because it's injury and subpar play.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Michael Penix is hurt all the time. Bo Nix can't
- 18:13Speaker 4: play until there's four minutes left in the game.
- 18:14Speaker 5: It's weird to say Penix's career could be in better
- 18:16Speaker 5: shape financially than some of these other guys.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, and I think he's safer to only
- 18:21Speaker 4: play six games a year.
- 18:22Speaker 6: You love him because he's left-handed. All right, my next
- 18:23Speaker 6: warm take, here we go. Let's go to baseball. Last night,
- 18:26Speaker 6: Brewers take down the Dodgers.
- 18:27Speaker 5: They're up 1-0. It's a long series, but they got
- 18:30Speaker 5: a little momentum. That was a nice pitching matchup. Jacob Mizorowski,
- 18:33Speaker 5: Tariq Skubal, top notch, but both didn't make it to
- 18:36Speaker 5: the sixth inning, and that's not really surprising. These are star,
- 18:39Speaker 5: air quotes, pitchers, and they're not going to the sixth inning,
- 18:41Speaker 5: even in a playoff game. They didn't get roughed up.
- 18:43Speaker 5: They didn't get torn up, and they had to be pulled.
- 18:46Speaker 5: But you know what I love?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Yamamoto.
- 18:48Speaker 5: The Dodgers starter, he's fantastic. And you remember last year
- 18:51Speaker 5: in the playoffs, he had two complete games in the postseason.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Those will probably be the last two postseason complete games
- 18:58Speaker 5: of the next decade.
- 18:59Speaker 6: It doesn't happen. It's like a solar eclipse.
- 19:02Speaker 5: I mean, I think the last guy to do it
- 19:03Speaker 5: may have been like Curt Schilling or Roy Halladay to
- 19:05Speaker 5: do it in the postseason.
- 19:07Speaker 6: And the guy is unbelievable. He's 5'10.
- 19:09Speaker 5: He's 165 pounds. He looks like a smaller version of
- 19:12Speaker 5: Pedro Martinez or Tim Lincecum. But how come he can
- 19:15Speaker 5: go seven, eight, and nine innings? He did it last week, Yamamoto.
- 19:18Speaker 5: He went seven innings. Dave Roberts talked about what that
- 19:21Speaker 5: does for him as a manager. Once he has a
- 19:23Speaker 5: guy who goes past six into seven, that's two fewer
- 19:26Speaker 5: innings he has to deal with with his pitching staff,
- 19:29Speaker 5: with his bullpen. And it allows him to rest a
- 19:32Speaker 5: guy he may not rest. That changes the next night's game.
- 19:35Speaker 5: So Yamamoto has the biggest effect, bigger than anyone on
- 19:38Speaker 5: the team right now, on the future of this team.
- 19:40Speaker 6: And he only pitches one of every four or five days.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely. How about a Sandy Koufax? He was a
- 19:46Speaker 3: little guy comp that, you know, a smaller guy. But
- 19:48Speaker 3: I'll tell you one thing.
- 19:49Speaker 4: I don't think. it matters with the Dodgers right now.
- 19:51Speaker 4: They cannot hit. They had five innings of Brewers bullpen
- 19:54Speaker 4: last night and they couldn't. They really weren't even threatening
- 19:57Speaker 4: what's going on.
- 19:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 5: Mizorowski not to have his best stuff. He didn't have
- 20:00Speaker 5: his kids like to say best stuff. He had a
- 20:02Speaker 5: nice game, but their Dodgers aren't hitting. It usually works
- 20:05Speaker 5: out over the course of seven games. Yamamoto tonight, I
- 20:08Speaker 5: think there's a lot of pressure on him.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Well, all of baseball. Nobody said that.
- 20:10Speaker 4: I looked at a stat, actually, because I knew you
- 20:12Speaker 4: were going to talk about Yamamoto. During the regular season,
- 20:14Speaker 4: teams scored 4.48 runs per game. They're scoring 3.46 runs
- 20:16Speaker 4: per game.
- 20:16Speaker 3: It's the biggest dip.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Between regular season and postseason in over 20 years, teams
- 20:23Speaker 4: cannot generate runs. I think it's because everyone's throwing 100.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Is that trend based on how pitchers are used in
- 20:28Speaker 5: the postseason that you don't stay with guys longer and
- 20:31Speaker 5: switch in a fresh sub?
- 20:32Speaker 4: It's got to be more bullpen. The bullpen, last time
- 20:35Speaker 4: Milwaukee's bullpen looked great. They were given the Dodgers' fits. Okay,
- 20:39Speaker 4: I'm going to go back to the NFL once more
- 20:40Speaker 4: for my warm take. Obviously, everyone is talking about the
- 20:43Speaker 4: end of the Eagles-Jaguars game. To me, this is a
- 20:46Speaker 4: result of the dynamic kickoff rules. Now, they're totally confusing.
- 20:50Speaker 4: I'll give you that. They don't make any sense. I
- 20:52Speaker 4: think the fans in London were wondering what the heck
- 20:55Speaker 4: was going on, but it gave the Jaguars a chance
- 20:58Speaker 4: to return this ball to field goal position. This is
- 21:01Speaker 4: one of the great unintended consequences of the dynamic kickoff rule, Paul.
- 21:06Speaker 4: It challenges head coaches in a way they have never
- 21:09Speaker 4: seen at the end of the game. Because all you need,
- 21:11Speaker 4: if you get to the 35 if it goes in
- 21:13Speaker 4: the end zone or 40 if it goes out of bounds,
- 21:15Speaker 4: all you need is 10 yards. And the way guys
- 21:18Speaker 4: kick field goals today, boom, you're in play. I think,
- 21:21Speaker 4: and I did the math with our producer Scott Messina
- 21:23Speaker 4: this morning, I think if the Jaguars had gotten to
- 21:26Speaker 4: their own 45... They would have trotted out their kicker,
- 21:29Speaker 4: Cam Little, who's hit multiple 70-plus field goals.
- 21:32Speaker 6: What would it have been from 45 yards?
- 21:33Speaker 4: So from their own 45 would have been 67, I believe.
- 21:37Speaker 7: Okay.
- 21:38Speaker 3: No, no, no. Sorry.
- 21:39Speaker 4: 55 would have been 72. That's totally in play for
- 21:42Speaker 4: Cam Little. I don't know what the win was like
- 21:44Speaker 4: in London, but he could have hit that.
- 21:45Speaker 5: That would have been such a niche thing to do
- 21:46Speaker 5: it in London, the longest kick and field goal history.
- 21:49Speaker 5: I like the dynamic kickoff. Now, when they announced it
- 21:51Speaker 5: years ago, I think it started in the XFL season. maybe,
- 21:54Speaker 5: or one of those other leagues, the AAF or whatever
- 21:56Speaker 5: it may be.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 21:58Speaker 6: I didn't like that they went with dynamic. Don't call
- 21:59Speaker 6: yourself dynamic.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Before you are dynamic. Oh, I love that. Dynamic kickoff.
- 22:02Speaker 6: I like it now.
- 22:03Speaker 5: Here, about 10 years ago, I looked it up. Touchbacks
- 22:06Speaker 5: were all over the place. Most games started with a touchback. 75%
- 22:10Speaker 5: of NFL games started with a touchback.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:12Speaker 5: There's nothing more anticlimactic in sports. There was a couple
- 22:14Speaker 5: Super Bowls where everyone's, da-da-da-da, touchback. And it just, the
- 22:18Speaker 5: NFL got rid of it. They embraced this new rule.
- 22:21Speaker 5: It looks really weird when everyone's standing, waiting to go,
- 22:23Speaker 5: and they're saying, hey, go. But at least there's action
- 22:25Speaker 5: on the play. It goes back to the NFL. They
- 22:28Speaker 5: don't like things that are predictable and boring, like the
- 22:30Speaker 5: Colts offense. But they got rid of the extra point.
- 22:34Speaker 5: The extra point was 99%. And they said, we're going
- 22:36Speaker 5: to move it back 10 yards to give a little
- 22:38Speaker 5: action to the play.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 4: So there's been two games in NFL history, I believe.
- 22:42Speaker 4: I have to fact check this, that have had two
- 22:44Speaker 4: field goals in the last 10 seconds. They're both this year.
- 22:47Speaker 4: So it's a combo factor with the length of the
- 22:49Speaker 4: field goals that is really putting coaches into a pretzel. And,
- 22:52Speaker 4: you know, Nick Sirianni obviously looked bad and Brian Schottenheimer
- 22:55Speaker 4: with Dallas looked bad. But I think that's just the beginning.
- 22:58Speaker 4: This is challenging coaches in a way that they've never
- 23:00Speaker 4: seen before. There's no history to go on. Where, if
- 23:02Speaker 4: you're Nick's variety, do you kick the ball? It's almost
- 23:04Speaker 4: like a no-win situation.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Yeah, you're kind of screwed in this little patch where
- 23:07Speaker 5: you've got 10 yards to work with as a defense.
- 23:10Speaker 5: And I got Brandon Aubrey. If it's 65 yards, I'd
- 23:13Speaker 5: bet on him. And I think the fallout of this,
- 23:15Speaker 5: college kickers are.
- 23:16Speaker 6: Going to start playing.
- 23:17Speaker 5: They already do. They're going to practice more and more
- 23:19Speaker 5: 60-yard kicks because that's how they get noticed by the pros.
- 23:21Speaker 4: And the funny thing is, Brandon Arbery's an amazing kicker.
- 23:24Speaker 4: He's really bad at kicking off. He has a lot
- 23:27Speaker 4: of trouble getting in the landing zone the right way.
- 23:29Speaker 4: So there's another facet to kickers where they need to
- 23:32Speaker 4: work on their kickoff. The Eagles kicker hit a line drive.
- 23:35Speaker 3: That's the last thing you do in coverage, Paul. Remember
- 23:37Speaker 3: in peewee football?
- 23:38Speaker 4: If you didn't have time to get down there and
- 23:40Speaker 4: set your block, I have no idea, but the whole
- 23:42Speaker 4: thing was a mess. But I love unintended consequences, and
- 23:44Speaker 4: that's what's happening here.
- 23:45Speaker 5: I was always on the bench for peewee football, but
- 23:47Speaker 5: I remember watching the kickoffs happen, and they looked like
- 23:49Speaker 5: a lot of fun. Coming up next, we'll talk some
- 23:51Speaker 5: college football with Bruce Feldman at The Athletic.
- 23:53Speaker 6: Who's the heavyweight in the sport?
- 23:55Speaker 5: Is it Georgia? Is it other? Find out next.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Stick around. Not so fast. Yeah, I didn't play a
- 24:01Speaker 6: lot on kickoff return or.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Oh, I thought you at least got a kickoff return.
- 24:05Speaker 4: I figured they threw you to the grind.
- 24:07Speaker 6: When it was windy, they let me hold the ball.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Oh, that's not bad.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Welcome back. Not so fast. Andrew Perloff, Paul Paps, NBC
- 24:14Speaker 4: Sports Now, and Peacock. Wild college football weekend as usual, Paul.
- 24:18Speaker 4: And who better to talk about it than the athletics
- 24:20Speaker 4: and college football insider, Bruce Feldman.
- 24:22Speaker 3: All right, Bruce, I have a question. Is there an
- 24:24Speaker 3: elite team in college football right now?
- 24:29Speaker 2: Man, just one? I don't know if I would say
- 24:31Speaker 2: just one.
- 24:32Speaker 9: I feel like, you know, we had the big Georgia-Alabama
- 24:35Speaker 9: game this weekend. I think both of those teams fit
- 24:37Speaker 9: in the category of elite, have really good quarterback play,
- 24:40Speaker 9: loaded in the trenches. I would say those two teams,
- 24:43Speaker 9: I would put Ohio State and Indiana in there. And
- 24:45Speaker 9: then after that, you know, maybe Miami and Notre Dame.
- 24:49Speaker 9: The issue with Miami and Notre Dame is they haven't
- 24:51Speaker 9: played anybody or anybody close to anybody good yet.
- 24:54Speaker 5: When you see the end of that game, Alabama versus Georgia,
- 24:58Speaker 5: And I think nationally we make declarations on how teams are,
- 25:02Speaker 5: but it felt like Alabama could have easily won that
- 25:03Speaker 5: with a call one way or the other.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 25:07Speaker 9: I mean, especially there was a really questionable no call
- 25:10Speaker 9: on what looked like a pretty obvious pass interference.
- 25:13Speaker 2: You know, they had a chance to win the game
- 25:15Speaker 2: even after that.
- 25:16Speaker 9: There was a few minutes left in the game, but
- 25:17Speaker 9: that was kind of a gut punch to Alabama.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I mean.
- 25:22Speaker 9: You know, I think both teams are really close. I
- 25:23Speaker 9: think it was a really good win for Georgia, Kirby Smart,
- 25:26Speaker 9: and Georgia hadn't won there in a long, long time.
- 25:29Speaker 9: But I suspect they'll probably play each other in the
- 25:32Speaker 9: SEC title game in two months. So, you know, it's
- 25:36Speaker 9: a lot longer season now than it used to be
- 25:38Speaker 9: when we all grew up, when college football was, you know,
- 25:43Speaker 9: a much different system without an expanded playoff.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Another SEC team, Texas, loses to Oklahoma today. At the end,
- 25:50Speaker 4: Arch Manning throws an interception. Sometimes, you know, they were
- 25:53Speaker 4: the number one team, but Arch Manning looks like he's
- 25:55Speaker 4: having trouble processing a reading. Do you put Texas' offensive
- 25:59Speaker 4: woes on Arch or on Steve Sarkeesian or other?
- 26:04Speaker 9: You know, I think it's shared. You know, there's been
- 26:07Speaker 9: issues with Sarke's offense.
- 26:09Speaker 2: You know, they go.
- 26:10Speaker 9: They got out of Tennessee with a win. They barely
- 26:13Speaker 9: won that game. They did not run the football well.
- 26:15Speaker 9: It's a team, I think, that ranked 12th in the
- 26:17Speaker 9: SEC in rushing, and they went in the portal and
- 26:19Speaker 9: got two really good running backs. Last year's offensive line
- 26:24Speaker 9: was young, and it felt like it was a year away.
- 26:26Speaker 2: This was supposed to be the year.
- 26:27Speaker 9: But on the flip side, Arch had two really bad
- 26:32Speaker 9: decisions on throws, one that he sailed that turned into
- 26:34Speaker 9: a pick six. And to be honest, if you look
- 26:37Speaker 9: at Oklahoma— The previous three games, they hadn't scored more
- 26:39Speaker 9: than 14 points in any one, any of them. We
- 26:42Speaker 9: knew their offense was really shaky. They were going to
- 26:43Speaker 9: need some help from Texas and Arch gave it to him.
- 26:46Speaker 9: You know, I think Arch has talent, but just, he's
- 26:49Speaker 9: been really, really inconsistent. I, I think that at this point,
- 26:53Speaker 9: you know, he's a year and a half into as
- 26:55Speaker 9: a starting quarterback, you're like, okay, there's some stuff you
- 26:58Speaker 9: just can't do.
- 26:59Speaker 2: And, you know, he stepped in it on a Saturday
- 27:02Speaker 2: and it cost them.
- 27:03Speaker 9: And I wouldn't rule them out because they still have
- 27:05Speaker 9: a lot of talent and they have, really good talent
- 27:07Speaker 9: on defense, but they make a lot of boneheaded mistakes,
- 27:12Speaker 9: a bunch of penalties, and I feel like that's been
- 27:15Speaker 9: something that Sark has had a real issue with. That's
- 27:17Speaker 9: why I think it's not just an arch thing. I
- 27:19Speaker 9: think it's much bigger than that.
- 27:20Speaker 6: Okay, so Indiana makes the playoffs two years ago.
- 27:22Speaker 5: They win the whole thing last year, and now I
- 27:25Speaker 5: think the casual sports fan is like, who's the Indiana
- 27:27Speaker 5: this year of college football? I was looking at UCLA
- 27:30Speaker 5: and Kentucky off this weekend. They both feel like they're
- 27:33Speaker 5: in a great place. Can either or both make the playoffs.
- 27:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I think UCLA has a better chance to do it. Obviously,
- 27:42Speaker 9: they're undefeated still. Kentucky does have the one loss. But
- 27:45Speaker 9: if you look at UCLA's schedule the rest of the way,
- 27:49Speaker 9: they should be favored in every game with the possible
- 27:52Speaker 9: exception of the end of the year when they play USC.
- 27:54Speaker 9: And to be honest, they get USC and Michigan, who
- 27:57Speaker 9: if you looked at the schedule a month.
- 27:59Speaker 10: Ago, you're like, okay.
- 28:01Speaker 9: Those are the two toughest games. Right now, Michigan is
- 28:04Speaker 9: a mess. and their offense has been dreadful. Who knows
- 28:07Speaker 9: what's going on there? They may be a 6-6 kind
- 28:10Speaker 9: of team. USC is better than that, and they're really
- 28:13Speaker 9: good on offense, but USC's defense has been very suspect.
- 28:18Speaker 9: And USC has to play both, uh, Indiana and Ohio state.
- 28:23Speaker 9: If they lose both of those games, I'm not saying
- 28:26Speaker 9: they definitely will, but I think there'll be an underdog
- 28:29Speaker 9: in both of them. I think at that point you
- 28:31Speaker 9: wonder what kind of shape they're in. And right now
- 28:33Speaker 9: UCLA football has been just much more buttoned up than,
- 28:35Speaker 9: than what USC has had. So I think they have
- 28:39Speaker 9: a really good chance to make the playoff. Um, the
- 28:42Speaker 9: way things set up, Kentucky has been a really good story.
- 28:45Speaker 9: It's still more of a gauntlet for them, but they
- 28:47Speaker 9: have a shot and, you know, credit to Will Stein.
- 28:50Speaker 2: He's done a terrific job.
- 28:51Speaker 9: The former Oregon offense coordinator, he's got a pretty good
- 28:54Speaker 9: quarterback in Kenny Minchie and they got some weapons around them.
- 28:57Speaker 9: And it's, it's a cool story because this was a
- 28:59Speaker 9: guy who kind of bet on himself and, And when
- 29:01Speaker 9: people were like, what makes you think you can win here?
- 29:03Speaker 9: He was like, because of me. And for him to
- 29:05Speaker 9: just kind of put himself out there, you know, credit
- 29:07Speaker 9: to him because you got to think that way.
- 29:08Speaker 5: No, it's a great point because it goes back to
- 29:10Speaker 5: that thing when Kurt Cignetti was introduced at Indiana. He said,
- 29:12Speaker 5: Google me, I win. And Will Stein said, I'm going
- 29:15Speaker 5: to try the same move. And it worked out.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what's funny?
- 29:18Speaker 4: We got Kentucky, UCLA, Indiana, and a Kansas quarterback is
- 29:23Speaker 4: killing it in the NFL right now. What happened? Aren't
- 29:25Speaker 4: these basketball schools, Bruce?
- 29:27Speaker 3: What's going on here?
- 29:28Speaker 11: I know.
- 29:29Speaker 9: I mean, I'm glad Andrew, you, you touched, touched on
- 29:31Speaker 9: Jalen Daniels. He was like one of my all time
- 29:33Speaker 9: favorite college football players to cover. I mean, he's just
- 29:36Speaker 9: got such a great story of like perseverance and, you know,
- 29:40Speaker 9: Just to jump in this for a quick second, he
- 29:44Speaker 9: grew up maybe 10 minutes from where I live out
- 29:46Speaker 9: here in Los Angeles. When he was a freshman in
- 29:49Speaker 9: high school— there were all these five-star quarterbacks out here.
- 29:52Speaker 9: DJ Yu, who was a big deal, Bryce Young, and
- 29:55Speaker 9: obviously CJ Stroud, who turned out to be a heck
- 29:57Speaker 9: of a quarterback too. And then when anybody, he was like,
- 30:00Speaker 9: I would Google my name and it would come up
- 30:02Speaker 9: as Jaden Daniels because Jaden Daniels is also from, he's
- 30:06Speaker 9: a year older, but he's also from the Southern California
- 30:09Speaker 9: area and just was like, hey, I'm going to play
- 30:11Speaker 9: the long game.
- 30:12Speaker 2: I'm going to believe in myself.
- 30:13Speaker 9: I mean, the kid was on When he was a
- 30:15Speaker 9: sophomore in high school, they kept him on the freshman team,
- 30:18Speaker 9: which was like a huge blow to him.
- 30:20Speaker 2: And he just kept battling. And so I'm glad he's
- 30:23Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 30:23Speaker 9: I thought it was awesome that he got a chance
- 30:25Speaker 9: to start when Baker got hurt.
- 30:26Speaker 2: And I definitely root for him.
- 30:29Speaker 9: But again, basketball schools are really showing up big time
- 30:33Speaker 9: in college football right now.
- 30:33Speaker 4: All right, Bruce, everyone knows your freaks list is amazing.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Notorious column. And Jeremiah Smith, obviously, have you ever had
- 30:41Speaker 4: a freak who delivered like this on the football field
- 30:44Speaker 4: to both combine the physical skills and the production at
- 30:47Speaker 4: that position wide receiver?
- 30:50Speaker 2: Not quite to this degree.
- 30:51Speaker 9: I mean, like, Saquon was, you know, high up on
- 30:54Speaker 9: the freaks list, and he was a phenomenal player. And
- 30:56Speaker 9: you had, you know, guys like Jadeveon Clowney. But Jadeveon
- 31:00Speaker 9: Clowney was, like, more of the hype. I mean, he
- 31:02Speaker 9: was a good player, and he would make wow plays.
- 31:05Speaker 9: But this guy, I seriously, you know, for the past, like, month,
- 31:09Speaker 9: I'm in Studio Fox, and we're kind of like, wrestling
- 31:12Speaker 9: with the idea of hyperbole for him you know is
- 31:15Speaker 9: he the best player in college football yes is he
- 31:17Speaker 9: the best player ohio state's ever had well archie griffin's
- 31:20Speaker 9: the only one who's won two heismans orlando pace maybe
- 31:22Speaker 9: the greatest offensive lineman that's a tougher conversation um but
- 31:26Speaker 9: then you look at like is the greatest receiver who's
- 31:29Speaker 9: in college football has ever seen and i think the
- 31:31Speaker 9: answer is definite yes because we now have basically three
- 31:35Speaker 9: years of sample size he came in He came in
- 31:38Speaker 9: like Andre Johnson was when he was with the Texans,
- 31:41Speaker 9: except he came in at a high school that way.
- 31:45Speaker 9: And Randy Moss was probably the most dominant receiver who
- 31:47Speaker 9: ever played in college football.
- 31:48Speaker 2: He had two years at Marshall.
- 31:51Speaker 9: He didn't really play high-level competition, not like Jeremiah Smith is.
- 31:55Speaker 9: I mean, it's just awesome what he's been doing and
- 31:58Speaker 9: keeps doing, and he just keeps getting better and better.
- 32:01Speaker 5: All right, before we get you out of here, Bruce,
- 32:03Speaker 5: we've got a big weekend of college football coming up.
- 32:05Speaker 5: We do a thing here called Such Thing as a
- 32:07Speaker 5: Dumb Question. I like to talk about uniforms. You probably
- 32:10Speaker 5: see it on Twitter. I think you've commented before. I
- 32:12Speaker 5: say right now the best uniforms, not football, but uniforms
- 32:15Speaker 5: in college football, the Tulane Green Wave. Would you go
- 32:19Speaker 5: with another squad? Whatever you pick, it's your preference.
- 32:23Speaker 2: No, I, you know, it's funny you say that.
- 32:25Speaker 9: So I, there's been times where I've commented on the
- 32:27Speaker 9: uniforms I like, and it's like some of these cartoonish things.
- 32:31Speaker 2: And I love the green wave mascot. I love the
- 32:33Speaker 2: color scheme.
- 32:33Speaker 9: I love when they did their Mardi Gras, you know, uniforms. I,
- 32:37Speaker 9: it's funny you mentioned that. Cause I was like, there's
- 32:39Speaker 9: no way he's going to go in the direction I'm going. Um,
- 32:42Speaker 9: but yeah, I, I, I love the, you just don't
- 32:45Speaker 9: see the blue green color scheme very often. I think,
- 32:47Speaker 9: you know, it's a different version of it with the Seahawks, but, um, Yeah,
- 32:51Speaker 9: I'm a big fan of that. Obviously, like, there's a
- 32:54Speaker 9: lot of folks who are going to go, oh, yeah,
- 32:55Speaker 9: Oregon's got some really cool uniforms. Like, I mean, Oregon's
- 32:58Speaker 9: uniforms this past week when they really laid an egg
- 33:01Speaker 9: against UCLA, I thought it looked a lot like the
- 33:03Speaker 9: Nickelodeon football, like, monster stuff.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, that's a little overdoing it.
- 33:07Speaker 9: But, yeah, I'm a big fan of the Green Wave
- 33:10Speaker 9: color scheme.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Great.
- 33:12Speaker 4: We've got to end on that hard-hitting analysis right there. Bruce,
- 33:15Speaker 4: thanks for the time. We'll talk to you later in
- 33:17Speaker 4: the season.
- 33:18Speaker 2: My pleasure. Good seeing you guys.
- 33:19Speaker 6: That's just two guys simpatico on uniforms.
- 33:22Speaker 5: He likes Tulane. I like Tulane. He also brought up
- 33:24Speaker 5: his freaks list.
- 33:25Speaker 4: He does this.
- 33:25Speaker 5: If you haven't seen it, Bruce Feldman, his preseason freaks list.
- 33:29Speaker 5: Who is the greatest college football, physicality-wise, football player you've
- 33:33Speaker 5: ever seen? Not necessarily what he did in the pros.
- 33:35Speaker 5: I'll go first. I would have to say one of
- 33:38Speaker 5: my all-time ones that popped in my head. Indomitian Sioux
- 33:41Speaker 5: and LeVar Arrington at Penn State. They look like they're
- 33:44Speaker 5: playing with your little cousins in the backyard. So those
- 33:46Speaker 5: are my two big freaks.
- 33:48Speaker 4: Well, I mean... Bruce just laid out two, or I
- 33:50Speaker 4: would put it ahead of him, Jadavion Clowney and Saquon Barker. Right.
- 33:53Speaker 4: I don't know if those guys, I don't think he
- 33:55Speaker 4: started the freak list when Sue was in college. But
- 33:57Speaker 4: Sue is just a big, thick lineman.
- 33:59Speaker 6: But he moved.
- 34:00Speaker 5: He could move.
- 34:00Speaker 3: But Jadavion Clowney could run a 4-4.
- 34:03Speaker 6: Yeah, that hit.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Everyone remembers the Clowney hit. I think it was the
- 34:05Speaker 5: Sun Bowl versus Michigan and Vincent Smith, the running back.
- 34:08Speaker 5: He hit him, knocked his helmet off in the air
- 34:11Speaker 5: like a cartoon, and picked up the football. That's all time.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Chase Young jumps to mind, too. But Jeremiah Smith, I...
- 34:17Speaker 4: I think he said some interesting things. Best wide receiver
- 34:19Speaker 4: in college football history. That's what we're talking about. And
- 34:21Speaker 4: he's not a hyperbole guy. No, he is definitely not
- 34:23Speaker 4: a hyperbole guy. All right, coming up next, we'll hear
- 34:26Speaker 4: from Jim Harbaugh, not John, about his quarterback struggles and
- 34:30Speaker 4: what's next for the Chargers.
- 34:31Speaker 3: That's next. Not so fast.
- 34:33Speaker 6: I've heard this clip, and it's not so good.
- 34:36Speaker 4: No.
- 34:36Speaker 6: It's going bad.
- 34:46Speaker 1: But if the Titans have the number one pick in
- 34:48Speaker 1: the draft, are you taking Jeremiah Smith or are you
- 34:51Speaker 1: going to take a quarterback?
- 34:54Speaker 12: I think Cam Ward still has it. I would build
- 34:58Speaker 12: around Cam Ward. I think you've got to figure out
- 35:00Speaker 12: that offense. But I think it's a fascinating situation for
- 35:02Speaker 12: anyone who has a number one pick because of the
- 35:05Speaker 12: depth of the quarterback class. And I'm talking about Darian Mensah.
- 35:08Speaker 12: I'm talking about C.J.
- 35:09Speaker 4: Carr.
- 35:09Speaker 12: I'm talking about Drew Mestemaker. I'm talking about multiple other
- 35:12Speaker 12: guys that could be in the first-round conversation.
- 35:16Speaker 6: Cam Ward, he's 0-5. He's thrown three total touchdowns this year.
- 35:21Speaker 12: It's not just Cam Ward, but ultimately the quarterback gets
- 35:23Speaker 12: way too much credit when things go wrong and way
- 35:25Speaker 12: too much blame when it goes bad.
- 35:27Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff, NBC Sports here.
- 35:30Speaker 6: I like Chase Daniel.
- 35:32Speaker 5: I think Chase Daniel is being very friendly to Cam
- 35:35Speaker 5: Ward there.
- 35:36Speaker 6: Really?
- 35:37Speaker 5: Yeah, because Cam Ward has not shown anything.
- 35:39Speaker 3: No offense. He's got a good arm.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Yeah, he has a very good arm. If it's a
- 35:42Speaker 5: throwing contest for distance, I'd bet on him. But I
- 35:45Speaker 5: don't think he raises up a franchise right yet. If
- 35:47Speaker 5: you look at that, he's done nothing for you to
- 35:49Speaker 5: back him. I know what you're saying is on that franchise,
- 35:53Speaker 5: you have no idea what you're going to do. But
- 35:54Speaker 5: based off what Chase Daniels is saying here, if you
- 35:57Speaker 5: take a quarterback again next year, he's against that. I
- 36:01Speaker 5: like that part of it. I like not taking quarterback
- 36:02Speaker 5: again and just Malik Willis.
- 36:04Speaker 3: So what do you disagree with him about? So you
- 36:06Speaker 3: would not take a quarterback?
- 36:07Speaker 5: No, I agree with him from the standpoint of You
- 36:10Speaker 5: don't take another quarterback.
- 36:12Speaker 6: But Cam Ward, there's nothing to stick with. He hasn't
- 36:14Speaker 6: done anything.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Well, I got to be honest.
- 36:16Speaker 4: You look at the head coach, Robert Sala. We know
- 36:18Speaker 4: quarterbacks performed when he was with the Jets. How do
- 36:21Speaker 4: you judge Cam Ward? Based on this offense, Brian Dayboy,
- 36:25Speaker 4: I believe he's his OC, who has really had one
- 36:27Speaker 4: good year with Josh Allen, and that's about it.
- 36:30Speaker 3: I just think he's in the wrong spot. I think
- 36:31Speaker 3: you need to keep him.
- 36:32Speaker 4: If you end up at the top of the draft,
- 36:34Speaker 4: take wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and then see what Cam
- 36:37Speaker 4: Ward can do.
- 36:38Speaker 5: If you're the Titans, the number one pick, Jeremiah Smith, quarterback,
- 36:42Speaker 5: or what if you get a big trade offer for
- 36:43Speaker 5: one of those quarterbacks? That means you would have to
- 36:45Speaker 5: pass on Jeremiah Smith.
- 36:47Speaker 4: That's fine.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:48Speaker 4: I mean, you're talking about three or four first-rounders because
- 36:51Speaker 4: you said if Cam Ward's no good, then what's the
- 36:53Speaker 4: point of him throwing to Jeremiah Smith? We're going to
- 36:56Speaker 4: have all spring. Will Jeremiah Smith go number one overall?
- 36:59Speaker 4: But I think we do agree, don't take a quarterback there.
- 37:01Speaker 4: All right.
- 37:02Speaker 3: For our next clip, let's go out west.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Jim Harbaugh does not have a lot of answers, as
- 37:07Speaker 4: you can see from this clip after the Chargers fall
- 37:09Speaker 4: to 0-5.
- 37:10Speaker 11: Yeah, I don't know what that message is. The Um,
- 37:20Speaker 11: it's just in the, yeah, the players that just fight
- 37:27Speaker 11: their hearts out, you know, play, uh, give it everything
- 37:29Speaker 11: they have. That's, that's the only way. That's the, that's
- 37:33Speaker 11: the best way. But, uh, yeah, that's.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Okay.
- 37:43Speaker 4: All right.
- 37:43Speaker 6: That was unedited.
- 37:44Speaker 4: I mean, he's always said unusual things. This is a
- 37:47Speaker 4: new position. Because one thing about Jim Harbaugh, he's always won.
- 37:50Speaker 4: He usually wins really fast, and it's just not happening
- 37:52Speaker 4: in LA.
- 37:53Speaker 5: He's usually Mr. Positive no matter what the situation. This clip,
- 37:56Speaker 5: when I first heard it, I was like, well, this
- 37:58Speaker 5: clearly can't be Jim Harbaugh. I thought it was AI.
- 38:01Speaker 5: He's like a motivational speaker who just took a bunch
- 38:03Speaker 5: of melatonin. He feels like he's going to fall asleep
- 38:05Speaker 5: up there. He had nothing good to say because there's
- 38:07Speaker 5: nothing good to say.
- 38:08Speaker 6: He couldn't even come up with something at this juncture.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Well, the issue with the Chargers is Justin Herbert is
- 38:13Speaker 4: completely collapsing on himself. Every game, there's massive mistakes at
- 38:17Speaker 4: exactly the wrong time.
- 38:18Speaker 5: I was trying to comp Justin Herbert, who had about
- 38:20Speaker 5: three really nice seasons. Really nice seasons. Not all-time great,
- 38:23Speaker 5: not Peyton Manning seasons. And then it feels like he's
- 38:26Speaker 5: just not a good quarterback anymore. Carson Wentz had some
- 38:29Speaker 5: really good seasons with the Eagles. Then he got hurt,
- 38:31Speaker 5: and he stopped playing good football. But he did get
- 38:33Speaker 5: hurt first. And then he stopped being a good quarterback.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:36Speaker 6: Can it be just confidence?
- 38:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's a great point. Carson Wentz, I
- 38:40Speaker 4: still don't quite know what happened to Carson Wentz. I
- 38:42Speaker 4: know he wasn't popular amongst the front office of Philadelphia.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Or the team.
- 38:46Speaker 4: You know, a lot of quarterbacks, when it's RG3 who
- 38:49Speaker 4: falls apart, you always say it's the health. That has
- 38:51Speaker 4: not been the issue with Justin Herbert. It's definitely something
- 38:54Speaker 4: up here. But you would think with Jim Harbaugh as
- 38:57Speaker 4: your head coach, great offensive coach, and Mike McDaniel coming
- 38:59Speaker 4: over from Miami, the problem clearly now, he's not a
- 39:02Speaker 4: fit for Mike McDaniel's offense. Mike McDaniel's offense ran very
- 39:06Speaker 4: well with Tua Tungabailoa, who is the exact opposite of
- 39:08Speaker 4: Justin Herbert.
- 39:09Speaker 5: All right, let's get to another game that didn't work
- 39:11Speaker 5: out so well for one team. The Chicago Bears lost
- 39:13Speaker 5: big time going against Green Bay, the big rivalry game.
- 39:16Speaker 5: Zaire Franklin is the Packers linebacker, and he heard a
- 39:19Speaker 5: lot of the smack talk from Luther Bird and others
- 39:21Speaker 5: this week.
- 39:22Speaker 6: Here was his response after the blowout victory.
- 39:24Speaker 10: Man, I feel like since I've been here, it's just
- 39:28Speaker 10: been a bunch of them saying a whole bunch of
- 39:29Speaker 10: stuff about, us. Them making a whole bunch of comments
- 39:32Speaker 10: about us, doing a whole bunch of stuff about us,
- 39:34Speaker 10: and all the things we've been doing is focused on
- 39:35Speaker 10: being the best versions of ourselves. And that's the message
- 39:38Speaker 10: that Coach LaFleur's been preaching, just being the best versions
- 39:40Speaker 10: of ourselves. It's not about them, it's about us. And,
- 39:43Speaker 10: you know, we see all the little weird stuff they
- 39:44Speaker 10: be doing in the meet and all the different stuff
- 39:46Speaker 10: they be saying. We got guys that never really made
- 39:48Speaker 10: a real play in this league. talking about making somebody quit.
- 39:50Speaker 10: That's weird.
- 39:51Speaker 5: We don't do that.
- 39:52Speaker 2: He quit today, by the way.
- 39:53Speaker 10: He didn't want to play anymore.
- 39:56Speaker 6: That went scoreboard. He's got a point.
- 39:58Speaker 5: The Bears, the past couple years, have been sowing the
- 40:00Speaker 5: roots against the Packers. The late season wins last year
- 40:02Speaker 5: where it looked like the Packers quit. It was payback time.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, was that a mistake to provide all
- 40:07Speaker 4: that bulletin board material? Going way back to Ben Johnson's
- 40:10Speaker 4: open introductory press conference when he ripped the... Yeah, that
- 40:14Speaker 4: was a different team, obviously. I'm sorry about that.
- 40:17Speaker 3: Oh, no, right team, Chicago.
- 40:18Speaker 4: So... Green Bay came out like they wanted this win
- 40:21Speaker 4: so much more than Chicago. I know Chicago has a
- 40:24Speaker 4: backup quarterback, but still, do you think that the Bears
- 40:27Speaker 4: should have played it differently heading into this game?
- 40:30Speaker 5: Well, I think they should have started Case Keenum in
- 40:32Speaker 5: this game. I think a lot of people in Chicago
- 40:34Speaker 5: and a lot of Chicago media were protecting Tyson Bajent.
- 40:38Speaker 5: Last week against the Jets, Tyson Bajent, he threw four interceptions. Now,
- 40:43Speaker 5: three were called back, but the throws were still picked
- 40:45Speaker 5: off by the other team. He threw two yesterday against
- 40:47Speaker 5: the Packers. That's six interceptions on a team that doesn't
- 40:50Speaker 5: throw a lot in two weekends.
- 40:52Speaker 6: He is not playing well. He was better when he
- 40:54Speaker 6: wasn't playing.
- 40:55Speaker 5: Now when you see what he can actually do against
- 40:56Speaker 5: two not really top-end teams. And if Caleb Williams comes back,
- 41:01Speaker 5: this is all a memory.
- 41:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and the defense obviously did not look good.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Jordan Love and the Packers hadn't been doing anything. All
- 41:07Speaker 4: of a sudden they looked like they did prime last year.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Christian Watson with an incredible touchdown. This was a disaster.
- 41:13Speaker 5: Yeah, this was a disaster for the Bears. Now, it
- 41:15Speaker 5: can be a one-week disaster if Caleb Williams comes back,
- 41:18Speaker 5: but Packers fans are enjoying this one.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Yeah, all right.
- 41:21Speaker 4: We have time for one more quick. Okay, in Seattle,
- 41:25Speaker 4: this play drove me nuts, Paul. Seattle escape of a
- 41:27Speaker 4: fumble TD at the end of the first half instead
- 41:29Speaker 4: of kneeling. Coach Mike McDonald tried to explain why.
- 41:32Speaker 7: We should be able to execute run plays. So we
- 41:36Speaker 7: want to stay aggressive. I mean, he kicks a touchback.
- 41:39Speaker 7: We're two plays away from field goal range, and we're
- 41:42Speaker 7: in good shape. So we want to stay aggressive and
- 41:45Speaker 7: get points into half the opportunity to get the ball
- 41:47Speaker 7: coming out of the second half. But we've got to
- 41:53Speaker 7: be able to execute our run game and hold on
- 41:54Speaker 7: to the football.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Straight up.
- 41:58Speaker 5: Straight up.
- 41:59Speaker 4: How come young coaches can be brilliant play callers and
- 42:02Speaker 4: even win a Super Bowl and still have no situational awareness?
- 42:05Speaker 3: That's the theme of this week, no situational awareness.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it does feel like I was going to bring
- 42:09Speaker 5: that up. I may bring this up tomorrow, that the NFL–
- 42:12Speaker 5: It's much more of a coaching situation league than it
- 42:14Speaker 5: is a talent league. I think the teams are pretty
- 42:16Speaker 5: well spread out evenly talent-wise to some level, but there's
- 42:20Speaker 5: more games lost in just the past month because of
- 42:22Speaker 5: decision-making by the staff.
- 42:24Speaker 6: And thus your quarterback or defensive players.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Well, this is recency bias.
- 42:28Speaker 4: Teams have been blowing games since the miracle of the
- 42:31Speaker 4: Meadowlands in 1978, but it feels like these young guys
- 42:34Speaker 4: can do brilliant play calling all day long, but there's
- 42:36Speaker 4: a minute left in the game. They need someone who's
- 42:39Speaker 4: been there in their ear.
- 42:40Speaker 5: And these days, there seems to be like an analytics
- 42:42Speaker 5: person that tells you do this, do that. You can't
- 42:44Speaker 5: do it in this situation. All right, coming up, let's
- 42:46Speaker 5: get you ready for Monday Night Football and the Marvin
- 42:48Speaker 5: Harrison Jr.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Trade.
- 42:49Speaker 6: Who won that one? If there was anyone who won
- 42:51Speaker 6: that one.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Stick around.
- 42:52Speaker 6: Not so fast.
- 42:55Speaker 3: If there was anyone.
- 42:57Speaker 4: Someone's got to win.
- 42:58Speaker 6: There can't be a tie.
- 43:01Speaker 3: If someone screws up, there's a tie.
- 43:03Speaker 5: Can you tie in a trade? You guys wanted to know, huh?
- 43:10Speaker 3: Yes. All right. We traded for Marvin Harrison. See ya.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Welcome back. Not so fast. Perloff and Paps.
- 43:17Speaker 4: He said it that way because there had been a
- 43:19Speaker 4: report all day long that Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 43:21Speaker 3: Had been traded, but nobody knew what team it was.
- 43:23Speaker 3: which is very confusing. Very weird.
- 43:25Speaker 4: So D'Amico Ryans clears it up. Paul, what do you
- 43:27Speaker 4: think of the trade?
- 43:28Speaker 6: I think this is a terrible trade for the Texans.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Here's why.
- 43:31Speaker 5: You have a quarterback who needs wide receivers and needs
- 43:34Speaker 5: quality wide receivers. Now you're taking a guy who doesn't
- 43:36Speaker 5: appear to try that hard or have the ability to
- 43:38Speaker 5: make big plays like he used to in college and
- 43:40Speaker 5: has really disappointed. Why would I want to add that
- 43:43Speaker 5: to my roster? Why would I want to give up
- 43:45Speaker 5: a second-round pick for underachieving? Every coach thinks it's a
- 43:48Speaker 5: reclamation project. I can make this guy into a star quarterback.
- 43:51Speaker 5: It reminds me, not exactly, not a direct comp of
- 43:54Speaker 5: Chase Claypool. Very good out of Notre Dame, goes to
- 43:57Speaker 5: the Steelers, underwhelms, and the Bears are like, hey, let's
- 43:59Speaker 5: trade for this guy, and he underwhelms. They're going to underwhelm.
- 44:02Speaker 5: This isn't like a quarterback where they can fix what
- 44:05Speaker 5: they have problems with. This guy doesn't play hard football.
- 44:08Speaker 5: From what I've seen, he's not an impact guy. For
- 44:10Speaker 5: whatever reason, does he not care? Does he not try?
- 44:13Speaker 5: Did we misread him as draft analyst? I think it's terrible.
- 44:15Speaker 5: I think the Cardinals did a great job of scoring
- 44:18Speaker 5: a second for this guy.
- 44:19Speaker 3: I hear what you're saying, but how do we really
- 44:21Speaker 3: know who Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 44:22Speaker 4: Is?
- 44:23Speaker 3: He's been on a bad team.
- 44:24Speaker 5: But he can play really well on a bad team. Look,
- 44:26Speaker 5: you mentioned Parker Washington. That guy's making a name for himself.
- 44:29Speaker 3: He had a great team with Trevor Lawrence slinging him
- 44:31Speaker 3: the ball.
- 44:31Speaker 5: But, I mean, he's not on a team that's so
- 44:33Speaker 5: bad that you can't play your way out of it.
- 44:35Speaker 5: It looks like he's moving at three-quarters speed when you
- 44:38Speaker 5: watch the clips.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Wow, okay. So he's reunited with C.J. Stroud.
- 44:41Speaker 4: We know how good he was in college. I think
- 44:43Speaker 4: that's part of your message.
- 44:44Speaker 3: There's upside.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Just because you have a huge grade on a guy
- 44:46Speaker 4: coming out of college doesn't mean that he's going to
- 44:48Speaker 4: be good in the pros. But listen, the Texans are
- 44:51Speaker 4: just too dependent on Nico Collins. They need another outside receiver.
- 44:55Speaker 4: I generally agree with you. They flashed a graphic during
- 44:58Speaker 4: the game, or maybe during the post-show, that guys who
- 45:01Speaker 4: were top five picks who were traded before their first
- 45:04Speaker 4: contract never ever work out.
- 45:05Speaker 3: It never works out, Paul.
- 45:06Speaker 5: Yeah, it does seem like Trent Richardson was a running
- 45:08Speaker 5: back because he gets traded to the Colts. They gave
- 45:11Speaker 5: up a first for Trent Richardson after he bombed with
- 45:13Speaker 5: the Cleveland Browns. The Reclamation Project's only at quarterback.
- 45:17Speaker 4: By the way, I think it'll be a low second-round
- 45:18Speaker 4: pick for Houston because they're typically in the playoffs. And
- 45:20Speaker 4: I think, by the way, thank God they got a win.
- 45:22Speaker 4: They need another receiver, so I'm willing to give them
- 45:25Speaker 4: the benefit of the doubt.
- 45:25Speaker 6: All right, let's go Monday Night Football. Bill's at Rams.
- 45:28Speaker 6: This is a heavyweight matchup. I think the Rams are
- 45:30Speaker 6: giving 3.5 per. Where are you going?
- 45:32Speaker 4: Okay, I can almost guarantee this will come down to
- 45:35Speaker 4: the last 10 seconds of the game. And it's going
- 45:37Speaker 4: to be something to do with the dynamic rule. So
- 45:40Speaker 4: I think the Bills lose the game but cover because
- 45:43Speaker 4: it's going to be within a field goal. I think
- 45:45Speaker 4: Josh Allen is actually going to play pretty good in
- 45:47Speaker 4: this game despite the Rams' defense.
- 45:49Speaker 3: And these teams are so evenly matched, something crazy.
- 45:52Speaker 5: Yeah, Aaron Donald is back. Miles Garrett is not. I
- 45:54Speaker 5: am picking the Rams as well.
- 45:56Speaker 6: Should be a fun one. Perfect for Monday night.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 45:58Speaker 4: This is a weird week where the best games were
- 46:02Speaker 4: actually with losing teams.
- 46:03Speaker 3: This should make up for all that. It should be great.
- 46:04Speaker 5: It's time for constructive criticism. Your notes from the weekend,
- 46:07Speaker 5: your comments from the weekend, your questions for us.
- 46:09Speaker 6: I've seen some of these.
- 46:10Speaker 5: They're really wonky. Let's go, Pearl. What is the first question?
- 46:13Speaker 5: Who is more overrated?
- 46:15Speaker 6: Lane Kiffin or Steve Sarkeesian?
- 46:17Speaker 4: Ooh, two former Alabama offensive coordinators. History shows both are
- 46:22Speaker 4: pretty good.
- 46:23Speaker 6: Pretty good.
- 46:24Speaker 3: I mean, more than pretty good.
- 46:26Speaker 5: Lane might be over-covered. Sarkeesian has never won the big one.
- 46:29Speaker 5: So I'm going to go Sark by a close margin there.
- 46:32Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I'm sorry. Lane's won the big one.
- 46:35Speaker 4: Head coach or an assistant? Shark won the big one
- 46:37Speaker 4: as an assistant, I believe. I have to double-check that. Yeah,
- 46:40Speaker 4: I don't know if Lane's won the big one. It
- 46:43Speaker 4: could be another tie. They're almost identical twins. They have
- 46:46Speaker 4: the same rear back. I mean, they both had really
- 46:49Speaker 4: dramatic firings at USC. So I think that's a tie.
- 46:53Speaker 6: Yeah, they have that in common.
- 46:54Speaker 3: But I don't think I like both coaches.
- 46:55Speaker 6: Next question. Here we go.
- 46:57Speaker 5: Did the Dallas Cowboys have the best showing of NFC
- 47:00Speaker 5: East teams in Week 5?
- 47:01Speaker 6: Wait a second, Nick.
- 47:02Speaker 5: Okay, the Commanders, that was ugly, but they could have
- 47:05Speaker 5: won it. The Eagles could have won it. So I
- 47:07Speaker 5: would say the Eagles probably did the best in a loss.
- 47:09Speaker 5: The Cowboys, did we forget what happened last Thursday night?
- 47:12Speaker 4: No, the Cowboys did the worst. They were eight-point favorites
- 47:15Speaker 4: or something like that over Tampa Bay, a team that
- 47:17Speaker 4: had won a game with an undrafted rookie quarterback, and
- 47:19Speaker 4: they lost. I believe that game was in Dallas at home. No,
- 47:23Speaker 4: the answer is a flat-out no.
- 47:25Speaker 6: I don't feel good about anyone in the NFC East.
- 47:27Speaker 5: All right, last question.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Here we go, Pearl.
- 47:30Speaker 5: Okay, Lions window closed or entering a new phase. I
- 47:33Speaker 5: love Lions window story. Okay, three years ago, they're in
- 47:37Speaker 5: the NFC title game. I think they're up 24-7 at half.
- 47:40Speaker 5: You're making trip to the Super Bowl plans if you
- 47:42Speaker 5: live in Detroit. and they're getting further away. But they
- 47:45Speaker 5: are quietly playing really good this season. The problem is
- 47:48Speaker 5: everybody media-wise and nationally is off their bandwagon.
- 47:52Speaker 4: What makes you think they're playing so good? Because they
- 47:54Speaker 4: beat up a bad team? When they're against good teams,
- 47:56Speaker 4: their defense is terrible, Paul. It's always been terrible, but
- 48:00Speaker 4: now their offense, without Ben Johnson there, is not good
- 48:02Speaker 4: enough to carry them to enough wins.
- 48:03Speaker 6: The defense is a big, big problem.
- 48:05Speaker 3: I think they are going into a new phase.
- 48:06Speaker 4: I think their window did close. I hate to say that.
- 48:10Speaker 4: But I really think the offensive coordinator leaving has hurt
- 48:13Speaker 4: them tremendously. And Jameer Gibbs is their whole offense. They're
- 48:17Speaker 4: just relying on him too much. He's going to wear down.
- 48:18Speaker 5: I am curious what they do with Jared Goff next
- 48:20Speaker 5: year if it doesn't work out this year.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Jared Goff's amazing. Jared Goff's not the problem.
- 48:24Speaker 4: He's been great.
- 48:25Speaker 3: How much more can they get out of Gibbs?
- 48:26Speaker 5: They may have to pay him one more time, though.
- 48:28Speaker 5: All right, it's time for the feel-good before Monday Night Football.
- 48:30Speaker 6: Great week here. Not so fast.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Let's get to it.
- 48:33Speaker 6: Feel-good, Pearl.
- 48:34Speaker 5: I'm going to take you to Raiders at Patriots. Look
- 48:37Speaker 5: at this guy.
- 48:38Speaker 6: There he is, Fernando Mendoza, former Indiana Hoosier.
- 48:42Speaker 5: Look at these guys. He's got the Hoosier jacket on,
- 48:45Speaker 5: the Hoosier Mendoza jersey on. He was prepared for this moment.
- 48:49Speaker 4: Looks like he's at the very top of that stadium,
- 48:51Speaker 4: and it was not a nice day.
- 48:53Speaker 5: No, but he was there hoping that either Kirk Cousins
- 48:56Speaker 5: would score five touchdowns and be pulled early.
- 48:58Speaker 6: Or give it up poorly like they did in Mendoza's interview.
- 49:01Speaker 4: I got to tell you, I didn't realize it was
- 49:02Speaker 4: raining that hard, but I watched Mendoza. I would not
- 49:06Speaker 4: have known he was the number one overall pick by
- 49:07Speaker 4: garbage time there.
- 49:08Speaker 3: He looks like he has a long way to go.
- 49:10Speaker 5: Well, he does not do the spectacular. He does the
- 49:12Speaker 5: mundane constantly in a good way.
- 49:14Speaker 4: Kind of like Kirk Cousins.
- 49:16Speaker 6: Very Kirk Cousins-ish.
- 49:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, the Raiders definitely a disappointment, but that
- 49:20Speaker 4: was a tough assignment.
- 49:21Speaker 5: You can't wear that varsity jacket outside in the rain.
- 49:23Speaker 5: The leather sleeves are going to get completely cracked in
- 49:25Speaker 5: a couple years. All right, tune in to the Dan
- 49:27Speaker 5: Patch Show tomorrow. Ross Tucker on the DP Show. Then
- 49:30Speaker 5: come on, hang with us at Not So Fast, NBC
- 49:32Speaker 5: Sports Now, Peacock. Enjoy the game.
- 49:34Speaker 6: Enjoy the football. Take care.
