- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peak Inside Gator Football Alley. Peak here.
- 0:03Speaker 1: This video is brought to you by PrizePix. New users
- 0:06Speaker 1: can download the app, play a $ 5 lineup, and use
- 0:09Speaker 1: our code. It's HMA. If you win, you'll get $ 150
- 0:12Speaker 1: in lineups instantly. So I just watched the John Summerall
- 0:17Speaker 1: press conference. And I think, you know, there are a
- 0:20Speaker 1: lot of ways you can react to a loss like
- 0:22Speaker 1: Florida just took to Missouri. You can panic. You can overreact.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You can start questioning everything that looked good through the
- 0:28Speaker 1: first four weeks. And I think that's probably what us
- 0:31Speaker 1: as fans are doing. But you could also do exactly
- 0:34Speaker 1: what John Summerall says Florida has to do now. Look
- 0:37Speaker 1: it squarely in the face. Tell yourself the truth. Own it.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And then move on. That really was the message from
- 0:44Speaker 1: Summerall today. Not excuses. Not pretending it didn't happen. Not
- 0:48Speaker 1: trying to convince anybody that Florida was actually fine and
- 0:50Speaker 1: it just kind of had a weird day. His message
- 0:52Speaker 1: was really simple. We weren't good enough. Some of these
- 0:56Speaker 1: problems were already there. Winning was hiding them. Missouri exposed them.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And now the question is, what does Florida do about it?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Because the loss itself is over. So now we find
- 1:06Speaker 1: out what this team is. The thing that stood out
- 1:09Speaker 1: to me immediately was how Summerall phrased this. He said
- 1:13Speaker 1: adversity reveals more about your character than success does. Anybody
- 1:17Speaker 1: can have the right attitude when things are going well.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Florida was 4-0. They had just beaten Ole Miss. They
- 1:21Speaker 1: were ranked in the top 10. Everybody was feeling good.
- 1:24Speaker 1: That part's easy. Now you get punched in the mouth.
- 1:27Speaker 1: You lose 45-17. Now everybody is criticizing you. Now people
- 1:32Speaker 1: are wondering whether the first four weeks were real. This
- 1:36Speaker 1: is when you learn about your football team. Summerall challenged
- 1:38Speaker 1: everybody in the building to look in the mirror, including himself.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Own what happened. Tell yourself the truth. Tell each other
- 1:44Speaker 1: the truth. And then get better. And that last part
- 1:48Speaker 1: is the most important part. Summerall acknowledged something I think
- 1:50Speaker 1: we all probably needed a reminder on. Some of the
- 1:54Speaker 1: issues that hurt Florida against Missouri had already shown up
- 1:57Speaker 1: before Missouri. They just hadn't cost Florida a game. That
- 2:00Speaker 1: is a really important distinction. When you win, everybody celebrates
- 2:04Speaker 1: the result, but the coaching staff still sees the flaws.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And when those same flaws finally lead to a loss,
- 2:10Speaker 1: then everybody notices them. But Coach basically said, I've been
- 2:15Speaker 1: seeing these things. Now everybody else is seeing them too.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And this isn't about a bounce back. I think that's
- 2:22Speaker 1: where this conversation maybe needs to change. We always say
- 2:24Speaker 1: after a loss, can they bounce back? I don't really
- 2:27Speaker 1: think that's the question. Florida doesn't need to bounce back
- 2:30Speaker 1: to exactly what it was before Missouri. Florida needs to
- 2:32Speaker 1: get better than it was before Missouri. If you simply
- 2:36Speaker 1: go back to the same team that had flaws hidden
- 2:38Speaker 1: during a 4-0 start, eventually those flaws are going to
- 2:41Speaker 1: show up again. Summerall said they're trying to build a
- 2:44Speaker 1: long-term sustainable success at Florida. That doesn't happen by pretending
- 2:50Speaker 1: you didn't get exposed. It happens by identifying exactly where
- 2:54Speaker 1: you got exposed and then fixing it. He was pretty clear.
- 2:57Speaker 1: There are areas on this football team that need significant growth,
- 3:00Speaker 1: not minor tweaks, not let's clean up one or two
- 3:03Speaker 1: little things. significant growth. That is probably the biggest takeaway
- 3:07Speaker 1: from this whole press conference. Florida is 4-1. The season
- 3:10Speaker 1: is absolutely not over. But Summerall also knows that this
- 3:13Speaker 1: is nowhere near a finished product. One of the more
- 3:16Speaker 1: revealing answers from the press conference was when Summerall talked
- 3:20Speaker 1: about what Florida looks like when it falls behind. He
- 3:23Speaker 1: was incredibly straightforward. This team, as currently built, does not
- 3:28Speaker 1: need to live in a true dropback passing game. That
- 3:31Speaker 1: is not an insult to Aaron Filo. That's not Summerall
- 3:34Speaker 1: throwing his quarterback under the bus. That is a head
- 3:36Speaker 1: coach telling you exactly what his offense is. Florida needs
- 3:40Speaker 1: complimentary football. Run the football. Stay ahead of the chains.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Create manageable second downs. Use play action. Keep the whole
- 3:47Speaker 1: playbook available. And Missouri completely knocked Florida out of that world. Way,
- 3:52Speaker 1: way too many second and longs. Penalties creating first and long,
- 3:55Speaker 1: third and long. And now suddenly the defense knows exactly
- 3:58Speaker 1: what's coming. That's not how Florida wants to play. And
- 4:00Speaker 1: we've seen that all season. When Florida can run the football,
- 4:03Speaker 1: this offense looks completely different. When Jaden Bogg gets going,
- 4:06Speaker 1: when the offensive line controls the line of scrimmage, when
- 4:09Speaker 1: Philo can work off play action, Florida looks dangerous. When
- 4:12Speaker 1: that disappears, now you're asking this team to become something
- 4:16Speaker 1: that it isn't. And that has to change. I'm going
- 4:19Speaker 1: to take a quick break from the video because I
- 4:20Speaker 1: want to tell you guys something really exciting. We are
- 4:22Speaker 1: now available on Apple Podcasts and over on Spotify. You
- 4:26Speaker 1: guys have asked us for a really long time to
- 4:28Speaker 1: make that happen. So we have. So please subscribe over there.
- 4:31Speaker 1: We'll give you the option of listening at work. Or
- 4:34Speaker 1: if you want to stack show upon show all the
- 4:36Speaker 1: way you drive to Gainesville on a Saturday, that works too.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But if there's a platform we should be on that
- 4:41Speaker 1: we're not, let me know down in the comments and
- 4:42Speaker 1: I'll see what we can do to get that corrected
- 4:44Speaker 1: for you. We want to be available in all the
- 4:46Speaker 1: places that you consume your content. So let me know
- 4:49Speaker 1: and we'll make it happen. Missouri also exposed Florida's offensive line.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And Missouri You know, Summerall wasn't shy about that. He
- 4:56Speaker 1: said Missouri's defensive front got after Florida. More importantly, he
- 5:01Speaker 1: said this was probably the most exposed Florida's offensive line
- 5:04Speaker 1: has looked all season. That's significant because up until Saturday,
- 5:08Speaker 1: Summerall felt like this group had really answered the challenge.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Against Missouri, they didn't elevate their style of play. And
- 5:15Speaker 1: I think that goes hand in hand with everything we
- 5:16Speaker 1: saw in film. Missouri reset the line of scrimmage. They
- 5:19Speaker 1: were violent. They were active. They built a wall on
- 5:22Speaker 1: outside zone. They forced Jaden Ball into places Florida didn't
- 5:25Speaker 1: necessarily want the ball going. And Florida didn't handle it
- 5:28Speaker 1: well enough. That can't become a trend. But guess what?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Every defensive coordinator on Florida's schedule just watched the same film.
- 5:35Speaker 1: South Carolina saw it. Georgia's going to see it. Everybody
- 5:38Speaker 1: Florida plays from here on out is going to test
- 5:40Speaker 1: whether that was one bad Saturday or whether Missouri found something.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And Florida has to know its own weaknesses. And I
- 5:47Speaker 1: think that's a point that Summerall made that I really liked.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You have to know yourself better than you know anybody else.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And I know that Might sound like coach speak. It's not.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Because once there's tape on you, opposing coaches are studying
- 5:58Speaker 1: exactly where you struggle. If your offense can't handle certain
- 6:01Speaker 1: pressure looks, they're coming. If your secondary has trouble with
- 6:05Speaker 1: vertical routes, they're testing you. If your offensive line struggles
- 6:08Speaker 1: when teams reset the line of scrimmage, they're going to
- 6:11Speaker 1: attack it. So Florida has to identify its weaknesses before
- 6:14Speaker 1: opponents exploit them again. What are we good at? Lean
- 6:20Speaker 1: into that. What are we bad at? Figure out how
- 6:22Speaker 1: to offset it. That's coaching. And I think that's where
- 6:25Speaker 1: we are going to learn a lot about this staff
- 6:27Speaker 1: over the next few weeks. Missouri adjusted to Florida. Now
- 6:30Speaker 1: Florida has to adjust to the adjustment. The defensive side
- 6:34Speaker 1: might actually be a little simpler. Florida gave up four
- 6:36Speaker 1: explosive plays that accounted for 235 yards. Four plays. Summerall
- 6:41Speaker 1: basically said if you remove those four plays, Florida played
- 6:44Speaker 1: decent defense. Obviously, you can't just remove them, though. They happen,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and that's the whole point. You can't play defense in
- 6:51Speaker 1: a way where four stops destroy your entire afternoon. Sarmal
- 6:55Speaker 1: said Florida has to make people earn it, and that's
- 6:57Speaker 1: exactly right. If somebody's going to drive 12 plays and
- 7:00Speaker 1: go 80 yards against you, I mean, fine. Sometimes offenses
- 7:04Speaker 1: make plays, and you can't hand out those chunk plays, though.
- 7:08Speaker 1: No 50, 60, 70-yard runs. And some of these weren't
- 7:13Speaker 1: even surprises. Summerall talked about one of the vertical balls
- 7:15Speaker 1: where Florida literally knew what Missouri was running. They were
- 7:18Speaker 1: calling it out from the sideline. They knew the receiver
- 7:21Speaker 1: was a go ball guy, and Missouri still hit it.
- 7:24Speaker 1: That's execution. At some point, you have to make the play.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And one of the things Summerall said that I think
- 7:31Speaker 1: was a great phrase from him, he said, Florida can't
- 7:34Speaker 1: sustain roller coaster football. And I think about how fast
- 7:38Speaker 1: the Missouri game got away from Florida. It was 3-3,
- 7:41Speaker 1: then it was 10-3, then Florida responds and it's 10-10.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Then Missouri hits another explosive, 17-10. Florida doesn't take advantage
- 7:49Speaker 1: of the two-minute situation. So Missouri gets a field goal, 20-10.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Then Missouri gets the ball after halftime, touchdown. Suddenly it's 27-10.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And Summerall basically said you blink and you wonder, shoot,
- 8:00Speaker 1: how did that happen? That is what happens when you
- 8:03Speaker 1: stack mistakes. One missed coverage. then one bad possession, then
- 8:07Speaker 1: one failed third down, then one explosive, then one penalty,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and suddenly the game is gone. Florida has to be steadier.
- 8:15Speaker 1: That word matters, steady. Now, that doesn't mean perfect. Bad play,
- 8:22Speaker 1: next drive. Give up a touchdown, respond. You cannot let
- 8:28Speaker 1: one mistake turn into three. And this is where leadership
- 8:31Speaker 1: has to show up. And I think that's maybe one
- 8:33Speaker 1: of the more encouraging parts of this press conference, because
- 8:36Speaker 1: Summerall talked about how the players responded afterwards. Jaden Baugh
- 8:39Speaker 1: reached out to Summerall and apologized for his performance. Summerall
- 8:42Speaker 1: said Baugh owned it. And to me, that's so much
- 8:45Speaker 1: more important than pretending he had a great game. You know,
- 8:50Speaker 1: he didn't. Summerall acknowledged Florida didn't help him enough either.
- 8:53Speaker 1: The offensive line didn't create enough. The perimeter blocking wasn't
- 8:56Speaker 1: always there. Missouri swarmed the football. But Baugh still looked
- 8:59Speaker 1: at his own performance and said, I wasn't good enough.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I won't let that happen again. That is exactly the
- 9:06Speaker 1: kind of response you want. Player-led teams respond differently than
- 9:10Speaker 1: coach-led teams. At some point, Summerall can only say so much.
- 9:14Speaker 1: The locker room has to take ownership. And if Florida
- 9:16Speaker 1: is going to become the team it wants to become,
- 9:19Speaker 1: this is where those voices have to emerge. One thing
- 9:22Speaker 1: I also found really interesting was when Summerall talked about
- 9:24Speaker 1: his own history. He said he has started seasons a
- 9:27Speaker 1: hell of a lot worse than 4-1. And he's right.
- 9:29Speaker 1: He's gone through adversity before. He hates losing. He said
- 9:32Speaker 1: he hates losing more than he likes winning. But he
- 9:34Speaker 1: also knows that there is something you can learn from
- 9:37Speaker 1: this that you simply cannot learn from being 4-0. When
- 9:40Speaker 1: you win, people outside the building are having a party.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Inside the building, the coaches are still pointing out problems.
- 9:46Speaker 1: And the players might hear it, but do they feel it?
- 9:50Speaker 1: Now they will. Now they know exactly what those mistakes cost.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And Summerall said the losing forces more direct accountability. That
- 9:57Speaker 1: can be valuable. Not because losing is good. It obviously isn't.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And he said very clearly, it's never okay to lose.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But once it happens, you better get something out of it.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I also thought Summerall gave one of his better answers
- 10:09Speaker 1: when he talked about Florida's fan base. He said one
- 10:11Speaker 1: of the reasons he came here is because people care.
- 10:14Speaker 1: This fan base is passionate. When Florida wins, everybody is excited.
- 10:17Speaker 1: But there is a flip side. When Florida loses like
- 10:20Speaker 1: it did on Saturday, you are going to hear about it.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And Summerall said you have to have broad shoulders and
- 10:25Speaker 1: handle the criticism. Good, because that's Florida football. There should
- 10:29Speaker 1: be expectations here. There should be pressure. Summerall called that
- 10:33Speaker 1: pressure a privilege later in the press conference, and I
- 10:36Speaker 1: agree with him. Nobody is demanding championships at programs where
- 10:39Speaker 1: nobody cares. This place has a standard because Florida has
- 10:43Speaker 1: won at the highest levels before. Summerall also said something
- 10:46Speaker 1: really important. Florida is not at that standard yet. And
- 10:50Speaker 1: maybe that's something everybody needed to hear after the 4-0 start.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Florida had a really good month in September. Florida was
- 10:56Speaker 1: not a finished championship team. And now comes the next part,
- 11:00Speaker 1: South Carolina. Summerall called them the most talented team Florida
- 11:03Speaker 1: has faced this season. NFL players all over the field.
- 11:06Speaker 1: That's not exactly the opponent you want when you're trying
- 11:09Speaker 1: to recover emotionally from a blowout loss. That's life in
- 11:12Speaker 1: the SEC. Nobody feels sorry for you. Summerall actually literally
- 11:15Speaker 1: said that. You don't get two weeks to emotionally recover.
- 11:17Speaker 1: You don't get to sit around talking about Missouri. You
- 11:20Speaker 1: get another talented football team walking in your life seven
- 11:23Speaker 1: days later. That is why Florida has to recalibrate quickly.
- 11:26Speaker 1: The Missouri loss cannot beat you twice. If Florida spends
- 11:29Speaker 1: all week thinking about what happened in Columbia instead of
- 11:32Speaker 1: preparing for South Carolina, then you have a bigger problem.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And Summerall understands that. So now what? That's really the question.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Now what? Now Florida finds out whether the first loss
- 11:43Speaker 1: changes them. Now the offensive line has to answer the challenge.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Now the defense has to eliminate explosive plays. Now the
- 11:49Speaker 1: offense has to stay ahead of the chains. Now the
- 11:51Speaker 1: penalties have to stop killing drives. Now the players have
- 11:54Speaker 1: to take ownership. Now the coaching staff has to figure
- 11:57Speaker 1: out how to protect weaknesses without abandoning what this team
- 12:00Speaker 1: does well. And maybe most importantly, now Florida has to
- 12:03Speaker 1: prove that it can respond. Summerall said something I think
- 12:06Speaker 1: that maybe should become the theme for the entire week.
- 12:09Speaker 1: What you do next says more about you than what
- 12:11Speaker 1: happens when everything is going well. Everybody looks tough at 4-0.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Everybody has confidence when you're ranked in the top 10.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Everybody is smiling after beating Ole Miss. Who are you
- 12:22Speaker 1: after Missouri? That's the test. I don't think Florida's season
- 12:26Speaker 1: was defined Saturday night in Columbia, but I absolutely think
- 12:29Speaker 1: what happens next will tell us a lot about where
- 12:32Speaker 1: this season is going. Missouri exposed some flaws. Some of
- 12:35Speaker 1: those flaws were already there. Nobody could ignore them. And
- 12:38Speaker 1: maybe that ends up being valuable if Florida responds, if
- 12:42Speaker 1: they clean up the penalties, if they get back to
- 12:45Speaker 1: controlling the line of scrimmage, if they stop giving away
- 12:47Speaker 1: explosive plays, if this team becomes more mature, if the
- 12:50Speaker 1: players really take ownership. Then Missouri becomes a lesson. But
- 12:54Speaker 1: if the same problems show up again, then Missouri wasn't
- 12:57Speaker 1: a bad night. It was a warning. That's what makes
- 13:00Speaker 1: this week so important. Florida doesn't have to erase Missouri.
- 13:03Speaker 1: They can't. What they can do is decide what Missouri means.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Was it the night the team started unraveling? Or was
- 13:09Speaker 1: it the night the team got an honest look at
- 13:11Speaker 1: itself and finally understands what still has to change? Coach
- 13:15Speaker 1: Summerall's messaging was pretty clear. Own it, tell the truth,
- 13:18Speaker 1: get better, and move forward. And now we find out
- 13:21Speaker 1: whether his team actually does it. And that is the
- 13:25Speaker 1: biggest test so far. We appreciate PrizePix for all their support. Guys,
