- 0:10What's going on, everybody all right?
- 0:13It's been a whirlwind week. It has been a great week.
- 0:17And you know what else? I am a week and 1/2 from spring
- 0:20break. In a week and 1/2, I have a week
- 0:22off. So I mean, lookout world, who
- 0:26knows what's going to happen next?
- 0:28I mean, in a week who? I mean, just think of how many
- 0:32books I could write. All right, Everett, you
- 0:35seriously, you guys, everybody's support of my latest Harebrained
- 0:40idea has been fantastic. I appreciate all of you.
- 0:44The emails, the messages, the texts, all of it has been so, so
- 0:49cool, and it means a lot to me. So thank you for your support
- 0:54very, very much. Now I've been doing these weekly
- 0:58Q&A's for three years and during the three years, I can genuinely
- 1:03say I don't think there was a week where there were five
- 1:06questions where the group of questions I liked more than this
- 1:10group of questions. I think this week's questions
- 1:13are fantastic, like really interesting ones.
- 1:18And I'm I'm very excited to share my thoughts and then hear
- 1:23from everybody about how my thoughts are wrong, which is
- 1:26part of the fun. Part of the fun is hearing what
- 1:30you guys think and how it differs from me.
- 1:32So in the comments, always share your thoughts on any of these
- 1:36topics because my opinion is just one opinion.
- 1:41That said, if you have a question for an upcoming
- 1:44episode, again, leave it down below in the comments.
- 1:47Every single week, I go through the comments to the previous
- 1:50week's questions. That's where I pull the
- 1:52questions that you're seeing in front of you.
- 1:55And if I have more than five, I add them to an ongoing list and
- 1:58I circle through those. But please don't hesitate if you
- 2:03have a question to ask it down below in the comments.
- 2:06All right, without further ado, let's take a look right here at
- 2:12this week's first question. Hi longtime listener, second
- 2:18time caller, 2 questions I cannot.
- 2:22Afford a babe? Ruth or Jackie Robinson
- 2:24autograph. But do you think other stars of
- 2:27cards in the 1960s that are autographed, like Lou Brock,
- 2:32Brooks Robinson or Willie Mccovey, will go up in value in
- 2:36the future? Also, would you rather?
- 2:38Have an amazing card with not so great an autograph or an amazing
- 2:43autograph on not so great a card if you had to pick one, thank
- 2:47you so much. This is a fun one.
- 2:51I absolutely have opinions on this.
- 2:54Now we have to 1st go back to the basics and we have to go
- 2:58back to the basics. And I know it would be easy if I
- 3:01could just answer the question and just give you a couple of
- 3:04names, but that's not nearly as fun.
- 3:07It's not nearly as fun for me. I got to explain why I think the
- 3:12way I think and give you background into how my brain
- 3:17operates when I hear something like this.
- 3:19It's getting to the point where my adult children, my 18 and 20
- 3:22year old children are like, dad, can we just ask you a question
- 3:26without a 10 minute response? And I'm like, no, this is just
- 3:30what you get. This is just how I am.
- 3:33Yes, this is how I am in in real life.
- 3:37My students probably love it because I ask a question, Mr.
- 3:40Miller, what's better a four O 1K or a Roth IRA And I go, let's
- 3:44go ahead and dive in. They probably do time kill
- 3:49questions like that all the time, which is fine with me.
- 3:52Now, to answer your question first, again, it's it, it's
- 3:57basic. It's very, very basic.
- 3:59It's all about supply and demand.
- 4:01Now you're asking it, it, it feels like you're asking this
- 4:05not from a collectability standpoint, but from an
- 4:08investment standpoint, because you talked about ones that I
- 4:11think will go up in value. Now if if if you're not worried
- 4:16about value, which you know from what I've heard recently is a
- 4:20thing, then you should definitely buy the player that
- 4:24you like. So I would say, which player
- 4:27from the 1950s and 60s do you like the most?
- 4:31Are you a big Red Sox fan? Well, you should get a Carl
- 4:34Yastrzemski autograph. Are you a big Red Sox fan?
- 4:38You should get a Ted Williams autograph.
- 4:41It should always be buying things in my opinion.
- 4:45If, if you're doing this as a hobby, you should always buy who
- 4:48you like most. It it sounds though, what you're
- 4:52asking me is which one do I think has the most upward
- 4:55potential? Now, again, I still don't have a
- 4:59crystal ball, but I certainly have a thought process of how I
- 5:03would arrive at some certain names.
- 5:05Now, you just mentioned Babe Ruth.
- 5:07You just mentioned Jackie Robinson.
- 5:09And those two guys are crazy expensive.
- 5:12And they're crazy expensive because they're both high, high,
- 5:16high demand and very low supply, at least on cards.
- 5:22Both of them actually died at a relatively young age compared to
- 5:26today's day and age. And they they both lived in an
- 5:31era when you didn't really sign cards.
- 5:34So there aren't many cards from them signed.
- 5:37And everybody wants Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth.
- 5:41They're the two biggest names. They're the two most important
- 5:44names in the history of the sport.
- 5:47Are they the two best players in the history of the sport?
- 5:50Probably not. But are they the two most
- 5:53important names? Absolutely.
- 5:56I don't think that's really deniable.
- 5:59So I, I know I just had rotten fruit thrown at the screen.
- 6:02That's OK though. My screen is still clear.
- 6:05So you're the one that when you, you know, when you throw rotten
- 6:10fruit at your screen, you have to clean it up, not me.
- 6:14So it's OK if you do that. If you so if that's your thing,
- 6:17keep doing it. So who are the players who have
- 6:23really high demand? Let's start there.
- 6:25If we're talking vintage players, right?
- 6:28We're talking players from the 50s and 60s is is what I heard.
- 6:33I would say the the high demand guys would be guys like Mickey
- 6:37Mantle, right? Very who are popular.
- 6:40Let's that's what I mean by demand.
- 6:42The popular players, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Ted
- 6:47Williams, Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, right?
- 6:54He was late 60s, but he's still 60s.
- 6:58Those would be some of the most popular players from the era.
- 7:01And and I know that the name the next guy on the list that
- 7:05everyone's going to say, well, you didn't, you didn't met Greg,
- 7:08Greg, you didn't mention, you know, I don't know, Ernie Banks
- 7:15or whoever you think the next guy in the list is.
- 7:18So, so who's popular? Those are some of the popular
- 7:22players. But here's the thing of those
- 7:26popular players, Mickey Mantle signed a ton, right?
- 7:32Willie May signed a lot. Ted Williams signed quite a bit.
- 7:39Hank Aaron signed quite a bit. Now how, how do I know that?
- 7:43Well, I, I was at card shows as a kid and those guys were coming
- 7:47through all the time. If you, if you list all of those
- 7:52guys that I, if you mention all those guys I just listed, of all
- 7:55of them, the one who signed the least is probably Sandy Koufax.
- 8:02Now why does that matter? Well, because that's the whole
- 8:05other part of the equation we have who is popular.
- 8:07I just listed some of the most popular.
- 8:09Just some of them who who is in low supply.
- 8:15Whoa. Mantle signed a lot.
- 8:18Mays signed a lot. Aaron signed a lot.
- 8:25Who again? Who else did I mention?
- 8:27May's Air. They all signed a lot.
- 8:30Koufax signed not nearly as much.
- 8:32And Koufax is is the only one that I mentioned.
- 8:35Will. Ted Williams is the other one.
- 8:37He, Koufax, is still alive. In fact, Koufax actually is
- 8:41living on the Central Coast in the same town.
- 8:44I went to college and I didn't know that at the time or I would
- 8:48have probably looked him up and, and hung out by his mailbox or
- 8:51something. I'm, I'm processing through
- 8:58that. So, so it, it, it's not just
- 9:04important of how popular they are, but also the supply of
- 9:08them. So then I think a little bit
- 9:10outside the box, who's somebody who's kind of popular but died
- 9:15kind of young and didn't sign a ton.
- 9:19That's where my mind is at, not who's the best player, but who's
- 9:25a very popular player who didn't sign a ton for some reason.
- 9:31Maybe they didn't sign because they passed away young.
- 9:36Maybe they didn't sign a ton because they just didn't sign a
- 9:41ton. They didn't do the card show
- 9:43circuit. The name that actually is
- 9:47standing out to me and, and you guys down below tell me I, I
- 9:52would love to hear what you guys think.
- 9:54Who is, who has the most upside in their autograph card
- 10:01autograph values out of everybody out there, because I'm
- 10:04going to give you a name. I'm not just going to tell you
- 10:06my my philosophy again, it's it's not only about who's
- 10:10popular because Mantle's the easy decision, but but there are
- 10:15probably more mantle cards on autographs than a lot of those
- 10:18guys of the people who aren't still living right.
- 10:21There's a lot of Brooks Robinson because Brooks Robinson lived a
- 10:24long time. He signed, signed a tot a lot.
- 10:27Bob Feller signed and signed and signed.
- 10:30Then when he got done signing, he kept signing and he kept
- 10:32signing until there's no one left to sign for.
- 10:35There's a ton of Bob Feller stuff.
- 10:36Bob Feller's really good, but he signed a ton.
- 10:41Bob Gibson signed a lot. Carl Yastrzemski is still
- 10:45signing. Ernie Banks signed quite a bit,
- 10:50so who's really popular but didn't sign a ton for some
- 10:55reason. I actually believe it or not, I
- 11:01think Roger Maris, that's my choice.
- 11:05Roger Maris is a very well known name.
- 11:10He's very likable. He played in a major market for
- 11:15the highlight portion of his career.
- 11:17He's not a Hall of Famer, at least not at this point.
- 11:21But the other thing about Roger Maris is he has a beautiful
- 11:24autograph, and I mean beautiful. If you were to say whose
- 11:30autographed cards right now are still fairly affordable but have
- 11:36a lot of upside, I have to pick someone that doesn't have a ton
- 11:41of signed cards and somebody who's popular and has high name
- 11:46recognition. I'm going Roger Maris for
- 11:50baseball. If you were to ask me overall
- 11:56football, to me it's autogram. It's autogram for a lot of
- 12:01reasons. He signed a fair amount, but he
- 12:05doesn't have a ton of signed cards out there.
- 12:08He has some autogram for football.
- 12:13I'm going, but overall I'm going.
- 12:15Rodger Maris down below. Seriously in the comments, tell
- 12:17me who's the guy I'm not listing that I should list, But it's got
- 12:21to be somebody who doesn't have a huge supply but does have a
- 12:26big demand. Because if we're going big
- 12:28demand and big supply, it's mantle.
- 12:32Some people say Willie Mays is underappreciated.
- 12:34He is, but he signed a ton. Hank Aaron signed a ton.
- 12:40You could go with someone with a really low supply.
- 12:43You know, I know somebody and, and did because they they died
- 12:48really, really young. There's hardly any autographs
- 12:50out there. You could go that route, you
- 12:53know, like Brian Piccolo's card, but that's not, I guess that's
- 12:5769. You know, Thurman Munson's
- 13:00rookie card is 70 and I know there's only like 4 or five of
- 13:04his autographed cards and PSA slabs that have been
- 13:09authenticated. But you said, I think you said
- 13:1150s or 60s. Maybe I made that up.
- 13:13OK, I, I just answered half the question in 10 1/2 minutes.
- 13:17Look at me. I, I'm super efficient today.
- 13:21The other part, I'd much rather have an autograph that I liked
- 13:27and a card that I like. Because when you're buying an
- 13:30autographed card, you're really buying the autograph.
- 13:33You're not buying the card. If you want a nice card, buy a
- 13:37nice card. But if you want an autographed
- 13:39card, to me the highlight of that item is the autograph, not
- 13:44the card. Look at that.
- 13:46I did that one fast. So I'm actually pretty proud of
- 13:50myself right now. This one says hi Greg, got a
- 13:54question for you. If you had several $1000 to
- 13:58spend on who is the home run king, which one would you buy?
- 14:03I was thinking of buying a game used ticket from the
- 14:07record-breaking home run by Hank Aaron at 7:15 back in the 70s
- 14:12passing Babe Ruth. Or would you use the money to
- 14:16buy the record-breaking home run game used ticket from the game
- 14:20that Barry Bonds hit passing Aaron?
- 14:22Basically, are you in agreement that Bonds has the home run
- 14:27record? I'll be it with steroids or just
- 14:29count on Bonds out and go with Aaron.
- 14:34I feel like there are two separate questions in this
- 14:37question and I don't know how much they have to do with each
- 14:41other. So let's just start with this.
- 14:45Who is the home run king? That's an interesting question.
- 14:53That's not AI. Don't think that's a super easy
- 14:56question. Let me ask you this.
- 14:58Who has the highest batting average of all time?
- 15:03Well, some people would say Ty Cobb.
- 15:06Some people would say Josh Gibson, because MLB recently
- 15:11allowed the Negro League stats to be integrated into the whole
- 15:15MLB stats. So if you looked right now on
- 15:18Baseball Reference, I believe it would say Josh Gibson has the
- 15:21highest batting average of all time.
- 15:23But I think there are a lot of people that would not say that
- 15:26Josh Gibson has the highest batting average of all time.
- 15:29They would say that Ty Cobb does.
- 15:33In that same line of thinking, I could see why somebody would say
- 15:37Hank Aaron is the all time home run king.
- 15:40I can also see why someone would say it's Barry Bonds because
- 15:44Barry Bonds actually hit more home runs over the fence than
- 15:50Hank Aaron did. At the end of the day, I think
- 15:55that whenever we look at any stats, their eras are part of
- 15:59it. You know, there were there were
- 16:00periods where the fences were were way out there, like 475
- 16:07feet. So.
- 16:09So yeah, somebody didn't hit the ball over the fence as much as
- 16:12somebody else. But they played in an era where
- 16:15the ball was made of mush instead of the way the balls are
- 16:19made now. And and they played where there
- 16:22were fences way out there. So how do you even compare those
- 16:25things, right? Just like with football.
- 16:28I mean, Oh my gosh, don't get me started.
- 16:31I mean, you can't even touch a wide receiver anymore.
- 16:34If Jerry Rice played now, he would have 300 receiving yards
- 16:40per game. And if Joe Montana played right
- 16:44now, he would have 100,000 passing yards.
- 16:52I know. Get that rotten fruit ready and
- 16:55also get a towel to clean up your screen.
- 16:58I know everybody loves Brady and I know that you guys love Randy
- 17:01Moss or you know, whoever the the flavor of the weak, weak
- 17:06wide receiver is. My point is this.
- 17:09How do you even compare eras? You can't really compare eras.
- 17:14You just can't. We live in an era now where
- 17:17there's ten guys that bat over 300 or 20 guys that bat over
- 17:21300. Like Tony Gwynn would stick out
- 17:25like a sword that he would win the batting title every year
- 17:28now, right? I didn't even start to answer
- 17:34the question, who do I think the home run king is?
- 17:39I mean, if if I had to write a book, wait, I just did that.
- 17:45I didn't even I didn't even plan that if I had to write a book
- 17:49and I had to note in the book, the all time home run king, the
- 17:54person with the most home runs, I would say Barry Bonds.
- 17:59But the people who say, Nope, the true home run king is Hank
- 18:03Aaron, I wouldn't really argue with you.
- 18:06I guess that's my answer. The person with the most home
- 18:09runs is Barry Bonds, but is he the all time home run king?
- 18:15I guess. I guess.
- 18:18Now as far as which autographed ticket I'd rather have, I would
- 18:21much rather have the Hank Aaron ticket stub from when he broke
- 18:25Ruth's record autographed than the Barry Bonds ticket stub
- 18:30autographed by Barry Bonds. I like, I like vintage stuff.
- 18:34I like old things and a ticket stub again.
- 18:40When Barry Bonds broke the record, people knew I should
- 18:44hang on to this ticket stub because this will be valuable.
- 18:49I don't think as many, I know some people did, but I don't
- 18:52think as many people thought that when Hank Aaron hit his
- 18:57that I better hang on to this because this is going to be a
- 18:59valuable item in the future. Again, the thing that makes a
- 19:02lot of old things valuable is that people didn't know it was
- 19:06valuable at the time. It wasn't until later that
- 19:09people realized something was valuable.
- 19:13I think I would rather have the Hank Aaron ticket stub
- 19:18autographed than the Barry Bonds ticket stub autographed.
- 19:22But if I had to take a lie detector test and answer the
- 19:26question, who do I think is the all time home run leader, I
- 19:31would say Barry Bonds. I think.
- 19:37I think that I did a decent job answering that, but I'm sure if
- 19:40I did or didn't, you'll tell me down below.
- 19:42So I look forward to finding out.
- 19:46This one says. Here's a question for you if
- 19:49you're. Looking for a difficult card to
- 19:51find that rarely. Shows itself on eBay or any
- 19:54other platform. An example 1935 National Chick
- 19:58Old Bronco Nagurski. How would you go about locating
- 20:02the copy of this card? I've been looking for years for
- 20:05this card and I cannot find one currently 0 on eBay or anywhere.
- 20:10Else I look, if you know a way please share.
- 20:16All right, this is a great question and I feel like I
- 20:22personally to a certain extent experienced this myself when I
- 20:27was building my N19 pirate set, the Allen and Ginter pirate set,
- 20:32the card. The card is the Blackbeard card
- 20:37and I went like a year where I didn't even see one was
- 20:41available for sale. I didn't see one on any auction
- 20:46house. I didn't see one on eBay.
- 20:49I didn't see one at A at a card show at the non sport dealer.
- 20:53I didn't even see one. But now I have one and the one
- 20:58that I have I bought before I even saw a different one show up
- 21:03for sale. The how did I do that?
- 21:06There's three things I'm going to, I'm going to I have, I
- 21:09actually have a serious opinion on this.
- 21:12There are three things that I would do if I were in your
- 21:17shoes. If there was a card like a
- 21:19Bronco Nagurski Chickle card that I wanted that I didn't
- 21:24have, I wasn't finding, the first thing I would do is I
- 21:30would reach out to some of the top dealers that deal in that
- 21:35category. So I would reach out to like at
- 21:39the National or at Strongsville, at the Philly show or at the
- 21:43West Coast Cart show, whatever it is.
- 21:45I would go up specifically to some of those dealers or I would
- 21:49Google them. I would reach out to them via
- 21:51e-mail and I would say I am looking for this.
- 21:55I'm not going to promise you I'm going to buy anyone.
- 21:58So if you find one, if you come across one, here's my name,
- 22:02here's my information, reach out to me.
- 22:04I would be interested. That would be one way I would do
- 22:08it. You got to, you got to find out
- 22:11from the boots on the ground, you, you need to put your, you
- 22:15need, you need more than two eyes.
- 22:17Right now. You have two eyes.
- 22:18You are looking. You need to multiply the number
- 22:21of eyes and the way you multiply the number of eyes is you put
- 22:25more eyes out there in the field for you to find that item.
- 22:29That is absolutely one thing I would do.
- 22:33The second thing I absolutely would do is I would make a
- 22:37Facebook account. I would get on as many Facebook
- 22:43groups as I can and I would put, I would start putting feelers
- 22:48out there. I would put I would post looking
- 22:52for this card. If you know of somebody contact
- 22:54me. This is what I'm looking for
- 22:59there. Again, you are multiplying the
- 23:01number of eyes out there. Somebody knows somebody who's
- 23:05trying to sell a Nagurski card right now.
- 23:07I mean, my buddy Darren, right, return to collecting.
- 23:09Darren, he said in his goal video with me like 2 months ago
- 23:16that he was looking for a particular card and somebody who
- 23:19watched it said, I know somebody who's selling one of your gold
- 23:22cards. Here's his information.
- 23:25And they ended up with a deal. And how did he do that?
- 23:30He used the platform of YouTube to send that out and and, and
- 23:38make more eyes out and about. Somebody knows someone selling a
- 23:42Nagurski right now. You know, that's what I would do
- 23:49is, is I would, I would go on those groups.
- 23:52I would go on vintage football collecting groups.
- 23:54I would go on vintage card groups.
- 23:56I would go on pre war Facebook groups.
- 24:00I would blast it out there to people.
- 24:03This is my information, this is my name, this is what I'm
- 24:06looking for. Contact me if you see it again.
- 24:10You need more people out there. You need more eyes than just the
- 24:16two that you have. Those are those things I would
- 24:18do. Now the third thing I would do,
- 24:23I mentioned recently there is a new website that this is like
- 24:30what they I mean, so, so let me give you an example of something
- 24:35that happened today. I was looking to book my flight
- 24:38for the National today and I said, OK, let's see, let's go to
- 24:44Southwest Airlines and I could go to Southwest Airlines and
- 24:48look to see what their flights are, what their prices are,
- 24:51right? I could then go to United
- 24:55Airlines. See, do they have any direct
- 24:58flights from Sacramento to Chicago?
- 25:01If so, what are the times? Are there stops?
- 25:05Are they direct? OK, now I've done Southwest and
- 25:08I've done United. Now let's try American Airlines.
- 25:11I go to American Airlines website.
- 25:13Is that how you look? Is that how you look for
- 25:17flights? My guess is probably not.
- 25:20What most of us do at this point is when we're looking for
- 25:24something, we go to a, a, a place that tabulates all of that
- 25:29information. You do one search.
- 25:32What did I do? I didn't go to American and
- 25:34Southwest and I didn't go to United and then go to the
- 25:37Continental and then go to, I don't even know you, you know
- 25:40what I'm saying? I didn't do that.
- 25:42What I did was I went to Expedia and Expedia searches all of
- 25:46those for me. Expedia says here's what United
- 25:51has, American has, Southwest has, and it lists them all for
- 25:54me. And then I go, well, I'm going
- 25:56to, I'm going to, you know, use a couple of tools here and I'm
- 26:00going to cut out some of the things I'm not interested in.
- 26:02So I said I only want direct flights and it eliminated some
- 26:05and I, I only want ones in the morning.
- 26:08And it eliminated some and it narrowed, narrowed, narrowed,
- 26:11narrowed. And it compiled, compiled,
- 26:12compiled. That's the term I was looking
- 26:14for is compiler. I needed a compiler and I've
- 26:18shared it on the channel and I'll I'll continue to mention it
- 26:22because it's it is truly is a game changer in the way that I
- 26:27search for cards. If there is a rare card that I'm
- 26:30looking for, I'll tell you right now, I want to bond bread Jackie
- 26:34Robinson with the clip corners. So how do I search for that?
- 26:39Do I just go to eBay and refresh every hour or do I go to auction
- 26:46wire? Auction wire dot AI and I go in
- 26:50there I make a search. Once I make the search, I can do
- 26:57filters, I can save it. I can set alerts.
- 27:03See auction. I know it, it probably sounds
- 27:10too easy and people go. So auction Wire, I would, I, I
- 27:16go to auction wire, I set my search.
- 27:20When I set my search, I then go and I save it and I set alerts.
- 27:25So when that card becomes available and, and Auction Wire
- 27:30is rolling out, I mean, I just talked to Leighton, Leighton
- 27:34Sheldon, one of just collect, one of the owners of Auction
- 27:37Wire 2-3 days ago and he's like, Oh yeah, we're about to roll out
- 27:42like 5 or 6, I can't remember 5 or 6 new auction houses that
- 27:46we're going to hit. So that's like Expedia saying
- 27:49now instead of just having Southwest and United, I have
- 27:54Southwest, United, Continental, you know, I don't know all the
- 27:59flights, but expanding how many different airlines that they
- 28:03could search for in use. Like they're, they're just
- 28:08getting started and they are broadening, broadening,
- 28:10broadening, broadening, meaning they're reaching more and more
- 28:13and more platforms. And I know people say I don't
- 28:19want to pay $10 a month. Now the first thing I'll respond
- 28:23to that with is this guys, again, it's, it's 30 days for
- 28:27free. You don't have to pay anything
- 28:30for 30 days. And then if you use my promo
- 28:33code midlife again, do I get a kickback if you use midlife?
- 28:38No, I reach out to them and I said, will you do something for
- 28:43my viewers? And they said, yeah, sure, promo
- 28:45code midlife. And then instead of 30 days,
- 28:48it's 60 days. So you have 60 days.
- 28:51So I mean, today is early March, we'll call it, what is it, March
- 28:554th? So we go two months, months, we
- 28:58go all the way into March, all of March, all of April and then
- 29:04part of May that you could use it for free.
- 29:09And, and the thing that I, I find funny is, is like 10 bucks,
- 29:13like not exaggerating. I drove by the gas station today
- 29:18and, and in California, at least in Sacramento, gas was five O 8
- 29:24a gallon, $5.08 a gallon and auction wire is like 10 bucks,
- 29:30right? It's like 10 bucks a month or
- 29:32something. 2 gallons of gas. My truck gets like 18 miles a
- 29:38gallon. I could drive for 36 miles which
- 29:44is what it would take me to drive to a card show just there.
- 29:48Or I could have auction wire and I could search for my pajamas at
- 29:52home on my recliner. There are times where, like, I
- 29:57am not going to spend $10 on this, but you'll spend hours and
- 30:04hours and hours and hours of searching here and here and here
- 30:07and here and here and here. It's 10 bucks.
- 30:11And by the way, if you use my first suggestion, which was to
- 30:19put a bug in a dealer's ear, right, and ask a dealer, and
- 30:24then the dealer buys it, he's going to charge you for that
- 30:27Nagurski card. He's going to charge you an
- 30:30extra 3000 because he found it. So he's going to buy it.
- 30:38He's going to add 3000, and then he's going to sell it to you.
- 30:41Or you could spend $10 a month, the same as it would cost you to
- 30:50buy a family size bag of Doritos and a loaf of bread.
- 30:57And you could have all this access to search all these areas
- 31:02for a month. That's what I would do.
- 31:09I would spend the whopping 10 bucks a month.
- 31:13If it's not 10 bucks, I apologize, but I think it's 10
- 31:15bucks. It's 10 or 15 bucks.
- 31:18Think it's 10 though. I would spend.
- 31:21I don't see. I don't even look at like my
- 31:23credit statements like YouTube Premium, I don't know what I
- 31:27pay, Hulu, I don't know what I pay, but I know that I'm getting
- 31:31my money's worth out of all that stuff.
- 31:33So that's what I would do. I would a reach out to a bunch
- 31:38of the dealers in that area. BI would go out and I would list
- 31:43all of these different Facebook groups.
- 31:46I would join them. I would make posts asking for
- 31:49people, if they know anyone to reach out to you.
- 31:52And then I would get Auction Wire.
- 31:54It's such a no brainer promo code midlife you get 2 free
- 31:58months, 2 free months, 60 days. Even if you don't want to use it
- 32:04after, you know, you're like, I don't want to spend $10 a month.
- 32:07Well, you could at least do it for for 60 days.
- 32:11It's free for 60 days. I don't know.
- 32:15That's just that's just where I'm at.
- 32:18So this is my hobby. This is my thing. 10 bucks, it's
- 32:23nothing. I mean my book is 2250.
- 32:29You can have auction wire for two free months with midlife and
- 32:35then buy auction wire for two more months and that's only $20
- 32:40to have auction wire for the next four months.
- 32:42My book is 2250. Don't buy my book, go get
- 32:47auction wire instead. You get more bang for your buck.
- 32:51All right, I beat that to death. But that was that's that's
- 32:55genuinely is genuinely how I feel.
- 32:58That's that's my advice. This one says great Q and AI
- 33:03like collecting OPG cards due to the rarity over tops.
- 33:08Some are graded by KSA, a Canadian grading company.
- 33:12Any opinion about their grading? I usually do not cross them over
- 33:17unless I am considering selling them.
- 33:20Any rule of thumb on how to price or comp them?
- 33:23Thanks as always, Antonio. Believe it or not, I actually
- 33:29think I have a fairly short answer for this one.
- 33:32This is the way I look at the smaller third party grading
- 33:36companies, right? You've got PSA, you got SGC, you
- 33:40got CGC, you got Beckett. Those are kind of the big ish
- 33:43for. Are they still all big?
- 33:46Will they still be around? I don't know, but those are the
- 33:49slabs that if I bought a card in that holder, I would probably
- 33:52leave it in that holder. If I bought a card in any other
- 33:55holder, I probably wouldn't leave it in the holder.
- 33:57I would probably snap it out and send it into one of those other
- 34:01companies or just put it in a one touch because the cards look
- 34:04really good in one touches. So this company that you're
- 34:08referring to, never heard of it. I know I, we have a lot of
- 34:11Canadian friends in midlife nation.
- 34:13I apologize guys, I don't know it.
- 34:15I don't, I don't pay a lot of attention to that stuff.
- 34:19But if that's a grading company that's big in Canada, I trust
- 34:22you and that's the case. So if the card is in an 8, do I
- 34:28then look at that card and value it the same as APSA 8 or an SGC
- 34:328 or a CGC 8? Or I could get into a whole
- 34:36thing about buy the card, not the grade.
- 34:38It doesn't matter the holder. It doesn't matter if it's in a
- 34:41holder at all. Here's what I do.
- 34:44This is how I use those other grading companies holders.
- 34:48They provide me some information.
- 34:50I look at it as I'm buying a raw card.
- 34:52I look at it as I'm buying a card that isn't in a holder at
- 34:56all, but it provides me some information.
- 35:00If it's in some company I've never heard of slab and it's in
- 35:05an 8, it probably doesn't have a crease.
- 35:08I can tell the centering just the same.
- 35:11It probably doesn't have a crease, certainly probably
- 35:13doesn't have a pinhole, sorry mook.
- 35:15It probably doesn't have tape on the back.
- 35:19It probably doesn't have glue residue on the card that the
- 35:23person is discreetly, you know by the angle of it.
- 35:28What it does to me is I look at those smaller grading company
- 35:33slabs as I'm buying a raw card with additional information.
- 35:40It probably isn't creased, it probably doesn't have a pinhole,
- 35:45it probably doesn't have paper loss.
- 35:50So it provides me more information than just a picture
- 35:55from a card that is ungraded. An ungraded card I am very leery
- 36:03of. When I buy online, I just assume
- 36:08that persons taking pictures from angles that are hiding any
- 36:13blemishes on the card, That's what I do.
- 36:16Just like I assume every time I drive through an intersection
- 36:20that the people in other directions are going to run a
- 36:23red light and hit me so I look. Well, Greg, that's no way to
- 36:27live. I welcome, welcome to my world.
- 36:32That's just how I am. So I assume that that a card
- 36:38that is raw probably has issues I can't see.
- 36:41And if it doesn't have any issues, I'm pleasantly
- 36:44surprised. And at the same time, if it's in
- 36:49a holder from a grading company I don't know or have an opinion
- 36:53of or or trust or have a relationship with, it provides
- 36:57me some information. But it's basically, it's
- 37:00basically a raw card because I'm probably going to crack it out,
- 37:05but I know a little bit more information.
- 37:08It probably doesn't have a pen mark.
- 37:10It probably doesn't have a crease if it's an 8 or a nine.
- 37:14I think I made my point. That's kind of what the way I
- 37:16look at it, this one says. Thank you for answering my
- 37:21question, great insight as always.
- 37:24I understand that being too focused can limit our ability to
- 37:27see good deals, but for me it's good to have some goals to
- 37:31prevent slipping down rabbit holes.
- 37:34For this week, I was. Hoping to pick your brain
- 37:36further. The card market seems to be
- 37:39settling a little bit, although it will most likely never return
- 37:44to pre COVID levels. The exception being iconic cards
- 37:48of rookies of baseball greats like Aaron, Jackie, Gehrig,
- 37:52Cobb. For someone looking to pick up a
- 37:55Hank Aaron rookie card, for example, it can be hard to
- 37:58decide if it is most prudent to wait out the market or strike
- 38:03now. While prices rise.
- 38:05Further, in your opinion, will the market ever correct or
- 38:09stabilize for these iconic? Cards.
- 38:11If not, should a collector look to?
- 38:13Grab one now before the market. Prices us out.
- 38:18Thank you for your videos and insight.
- 38:21I think a lot of people are thinking about this as a lot of
- 38:25card prices, especially some of the ultra modern stuff,
- 38:28especially some of the low serial numbered modern stuff has
- 38:32really taken off in price. People keep calling it a bull
- 38:36market. You can call it whatever you
- 38:37want, but there are records being set all the time for cards
- 38:40right now. And I think a lot of people are
- 38:42saying, well, I'm just. Going to wait?
- 38:45And some of my good friends have said that.
- 38:47In fact, I've had a couple of friends in the last couple of
- 38:51weeks have said that my buddy I, I guess I should, I shouldn't
- 38:58say what other people have said off camera to me.
- 39:03Some of my good friends have have said recently, yeah, I'm
- 39:09kind of waiting to make any big buys right now because I think
- 39:13the market's going to correct. Now, here's my thought.
- 39:18I don't try to time markets. I don't go well, I'm on the
- 39:23prices of houses just are going way up.
- 39:25I'm going to wait until they come down.
- 39:28What if they don't? What if they don't?
- 39:31You know the stock market is set an all time high on the S and
- 39:36Pi. Better not buy now.
- 39:38I can't buy my gold now because you know, it's at over 5000 an
- 39:43ounce. It's got to come back down to
- 39:463000 an ounce soon and I'll buy then.
- 39:50All of that sounds good, but what if you're wrong?
- 39:53You know, I remember when the Dow hit 10,000 and it was like
- 39:5810,000. Oh my gosh.
- 40:04It's done pretty well since then.
- 40:07It didn't crash. So here's my thought.
- 40:13Don't try to time markets. Now what I do is I set the
- 40:19amount of money that I have for my card budget every month and
- 40:24that amount of money goes into my card budget.
- 40:26Just like I have a different budget for my retirement
- 40:30investing. I have a certain amount that
- 40:33every single month I put into the market.
- 40:37It doesn't matter if it's at an all time high.
- 40:40It doesn't matter if it's crashing.
- 40:42It doesn't matter if the biggest company in the world just
- 40:46announced that they're going to lay off a bunch of people.
- 40:48I don't pay any attention to that.
- 40:51It's called dollar cost averaging.
- 40:55Sometimes I'm going to buy it really good moments and
- 40:58sometimes I'm going to buy it really bad moments.
- 41:01But on average, I'm going to end up average.
- 41:05That's the way that I do my retirement investing.
- 41:10Same amount every month regardless of what's happening.
- 41:13When COVID was happening and the market was, you know, pigs were
- 41:18flying into the sides of buildings.
- 41:20It was raining frogs from the sky.
- 41:22I was just buying and buying and buying the same dollar amount.
- 41:29I didn't sell, I didn't pull money out.
- 41:32I just kept doing what I'm doing.
- 41:36That's the way I look at cards. I'm absolutely going to buy some
- 41:41cards at a really good time. I'm absolutely going to buy some
- 41:44cards at the peaks of times and the cards will go way down.
- 41:49But I'm just going to buy what I want when I want it.
- 41:53Sometimes when we try to outsmart the market, what we end
- 41:57up doing is outsmarting ourselves.
- 42:00I'm just having a good time. Now, again, I will say this too,
- 42:04I don't think that you should ever use money on cards that you
- 42:09can't afford to get nothing back from, right?
- 42:14When I go on a vacation, I don't say, you know, as I'm buying
- 42:19that $6 churro at Disneyland, I don't say I hope I get a good
- 42:26return on this investment. I just enjoy it.
- 42:30I just enjoy the churro. The delicious crunchy, sugary,
- 42:36cinnamon, warm, melt in your mouth churro.
- 42:40I just enjoy it. I don't worry about the return
- 42:44because this is something I'm doing for fun.
- 42:48My wife's in there emptying the dishwasher.
- 42:51Bless her. I love my wife's.
- 42:54I have the best wife ever. I feel sorry for everybody
- 42:59watching this because my wife is better and she's so sweet.
- 43:04And what I do is whenever I go in to record like this, because
- 43:07I'm literally sitting on our bed, I say, hey, honey, I'm
- 43:11going to go in and record for a little bit.
- 43:15So just so you know, and that's my, that's my way of saying, so
- 43:18don't empty the dishwasher and and bang a bunch of pans and
- 43:23silverware and stuff. And then she's so sweet 'cause
- 43:27she's just trying to help and, and help the family out and take
- 43:32care of things for us as I'm in here on my silly YouTube channel
- 43:37stuff. She's so sweet.
- 43:43Love her. She just forgets.
- 43:45She forgets she's the best. What was I talking about?
- 43:50I've no idea. Dollar cost averaging.
- 43:53Here's my thing. Don't.
- 43:55There's the garbage disposal. Love that woman, man.
- 44:00I love her. Love her the best.
- 44:08She is the best thing. The best thing that's ever
- 44:11happened to me, I know all of you who are sitting next to your
- 44:15wives right now are going this guy is complaining because his
- 44:19wife is emptying the dishwasher. He should he she should never
- 44:24empty it again. Make you make him do it forever
- 44:29now because he complaints and she's doing it.
- 44:31You know what, you're probably right.
- 44:34You're probably right. Dollar cost averaging.
- 44:40Just just enjoy the hobby. Don't try to time the market.
- 44:45You're going to have some really good buys over your life of
- 44:49buying cards for the hobby. You're going to buy some stuff
- 44:51when prices are super low. And you know what else?
- 44:55You're going to buy some stuff when prices are super high.
- 44:58And will the market crash? Absolutely.
- 45:01The market is going to go down. And there's going to be a a time
- 45:05in the in the in the economy where things are crashing and
- 45:08people are going to have to sell things like cards to help pay
- 45:11bills and people are going to have credit card debt.
- 45:14And you know things are going to happen.
- 45:15Absolutely. There are going to be times
- 45:18where the market's going way up. There are going to be times when
- 45:21the market's going way down. But if you just do your thing
- 45:26and you just keep doing your thing, you have some good buys,
- 45:30you'll have some bad buys, and everything will work out to be
- 45:35an average buy. That's what I would do.
- 45:38That's just my take. For the record, I love my wife
- 45:44more than anything on earth, including myself.
- 45:49I love her 100 times more than I love myself.
- 45:53She's the best. If you have a question for an
- 45:57upcoming episode, do not hesitate down below in the
- 46:01comments. Simply ask it.
- 46:03Thanks for watching everybody. Again, If you haven't bought the
- 46:07book yet, down below in the description, there will also be
- 46:12a link to the Amazon page where you can buy it and I'd
- 46:19appreciate it. And that's all I got.
