- 0:00Katie: In this episode, you will discover the specific reason why the back to school season feels like a grief trigger nobody warned you about when you're trying to conceive, and the three-minute practice that gives that grief somewhere to go
- 0:17Welcome to the Finally Get Pregnant Naturally podcast, the podcast helping women identify the real reasons you haven't conceived or stayed pregnant so you and your partner can finally grow the family of your dreams.
- 0:31I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:32Katie Wood.
- 0:33Let's dive in, shall we?
- 0:36Katie: Three things you'll gain from today's episode: why the back-to-school time of year hits so hard when you're trying to conceive, and why that grief is completely valid; the reframe that's going to connect the dots for you; and your
- 0:51Katie: three-minute fertility prescription that will protect your nervous system and your hope at the same time.
- 0:59Katie: So let's talk about why this season hits so hard.
- 1:06Katie: The back-to-school season, right?
- 1:08Katie: August, September time, depending where you are.
- 1:12Katie: The first day of school photos all over Instagram and Facebook, the back-to-school aisles in the store, and getting stuck behind a bus on your way to work.
- 1:25Katie: And if you're trying to get pregnant, watching all of it can feel like being handed a calendar with a big red X that marks every season you are not yet where you hoped to be.
- 1:40Katie: This is a real grief trigger.
- 1:43Katie: Resolve, the national infertility organization, names it specifically.
- 1:49Katie: The calendared nature of the fertility journey means that every season that turns becomes a marker in your mind, whether you're conscious of it or not.
- 1:59Katie: Similar to your birthday, right?
- 2:01Katie: I know a lot of women and clients, it's difficult for them as another birthday passes them by.
- 2:08Katie: And then you have another summer gone, another school year starting for everyone else's children.
- 2:14Katie: Another data point that time is moving and your story has not changed in the way you envisioned yet.
- 2:24Katie: That grief is not self-pity.
- 2:27Katie: It is not a sign that all hope is lost.
- 2:31Katie: It is a sign that you want this deeply, and that you've been on this journey long enough to feel the seasons turning and changing, and that your nervous system is registering the passage of time as a loss.
- 2:46Katie: That is your human experience.
- 2:49Katie: That is real, and it deserves to be met with something more than just pushing it down and moving on.
- 2:57Katie: So I want to kind of talk about an analogy.
- 3:02Katie: One star in a constellation you cannot see yet.
- 3:06Katie: If you think about a constellation, it is made up of multiple stars, right?
- 3:12Katie: But here's what I want you to sit with.
- 3:15Katie: Every season, every piece of your journey is one star.
- 3:21Katie: And right now, standing inside this particular moment, you cannot see the full constellation.
- 3:29Katie: You're sitting way too close to it.
- 3:32Katie: You're totally zoomed in.
- 3:34Katie: You cannot see how this season of waiting connects to what is coming.
- 3:41Katie: Back to school season is just one star, one piece of your journey, but it is not the whole picture.
- 3:50Katie: You have to zoom out to see the entire constellation.
- 3:55Katie: And the question that changes everything is not, why is this not happening for me?
- 4:02Katie: The question is, what is this moment part of that I cannot fully see yet, but I trust that I eventually will?
- 4:13Katie: So here's your weekly fertility prescription.
- 4:18Katie: I want you to find three minutes and something to write with.
- 4:24Katie: It doesn't need to be a journal.
- 4:26Katie: If you have a journal you like to write in, perfect.
- 4:28Katie: Could be a note on your phone, a scrap of paper, whatever is closest for you right now.
- 4:35Katie: And I want you to reflect and write down three moments from this month that maybe felt hard, unexpected, or quietly significant.
- 4:48Katie: They do not need to make any sense yet.
- 4:51Katie: They do not need to have a lesson attached to it.
- 4:54Katie: They just need to be named.
- 4:56Katie: And honestly, the first three things that come to your mind, right?
- 5:02Katie: We don't need to make this harder than it needs to be.
- 5:04Katie: Just the first three things that come to your mind.
- 5:07Katie: Maybe it's the morning that you woke up and you felt something shift.
- 5:13Katie: Maybe it's a conversation you had that surprised you.
- 5:17Katie: Maybe it's the back-to-school reminder that made you pull over in your car.
- 5:23Katie: Name it, write it down, and at the top of the page, you can write this out: "These may become meaningful later."
- 5:32Katie: This practice does two things.
- 5:34Katie: It gives any pain or grief a place, which is what your nervous system needs to stop bracing itself, and it also opens a small door of possibility that what you are experiencing right now is not the end of
- 5:52Katie: your story.
- 5:54Katie: It is just one star of your whole constellation.
- 5:59Katie: It's a singular part of the bigger picture you will understand more fully when you are further along.
- 6:08Katie: You do not need to know how it fits yet.
- 6:11Katie: You just have to be willing to notice.
- 6:15Katie: And just to share a little bit about my experience when we were struggling to get pregnant with my first, it...
- 6:22Katie: I mean, it just feels like you're in the trenches, right?
- 6:28Katie: And when I finally came out on the other side- And of course it's easier said than done when you're on the other side.
- 6:37Katie: But when you are there, it, it just makes the whole journey click and make sense, and it, it, it couldn't have turned out any other way.
- 6:49Katie: And if it had turned out any other way, the way that I thought it needed to turn out, then I actually may not be the woman, the mother that I am today, and I might not be where I
- 7:02Katie: am today if things worked out differently.
- 7:07Katie: And by differently I mean faster, right?
- 7:10Katie: If I got pregnant exactly when I wanted to on that first try, I would not be the mother and woman that I am today.
- 7:20Katie: Because I had to go through that journey.
- 7:22Katie: I had to go through those ups and downs, all of those negative pregnancy tests Right?
- 7:30Katie: So there is something that I've been building behind the scenes that is getting closer and closer to being ready, and it is being built for you, the woman who is tired of being handed partial answers and is ready
- 7:45Katie: to see the full constellation of what her body is actually telling her.
- 7:51Katie: I cannot say more yet, but I will so soon.
- 7:54Katie: So be sure to follow the podcast so you do not miss out.
- 7:59Katie: So to recap, your fertility prescription is to choose three moments in the past month that felt significant.
- 8:07Katie: Write them down, mark them as possibly meaningful, bookmark it, and give yourself permission and allow this season to just be one star in a constellation that is still being drawn.
- 8:22Katie: And remember, you are not behind.
- 8:25Katie: You are in the middle of something that you can't fully see yet.
- 8:29Katie: That's not failure.
- 8:31Katie: That is your story that is still unfolding.
- 8:36Katie: Thank you so much for listening to today's episode.
- 8:39Katie: I hope that it was helpful and it gave you an aha moment and just also offered some space to feel seen and heard.
