Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Life.
- 0:18Speaker 2: What's going on? Everyone? Emily a body? Here? You are
- 0:20Speaker 2: listening to five minute Friday from Hurdle. What a week.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I went to Paris.
- 0:25Speaker 1: On Sunday, I hosted an event on behalf of Nike
- 0:29Speaker 1: going siding with the Paralympics. On Monday, I got to
- 0:33Speaker 1: go up to the de France, had myself a day
- 0:36Speaker 1: on Tuesday. On Wednesday I went to Rome and enjoyed
- 0:42Speaker 1: some time there. And now on Friday, I am on
- 0:45Speaker 1: my way home as you listen to this back to Brooklyn.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I was thinking about how I feel like my best
- 0:53Speaker 1: self when I'm in Europe. I guess this month it's
- 0:56Speaker 1: been between Paris and Italy, although the time in Italy
- 0:59Speaker 1: was definitely too short. But I feel like my best self,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and that's because I'm constantly answering the question what's best
- 1:08Speaker 1: for Emily and not shoulding myself right. My routine in
- 1:14Speaker 1: Rome involved, yes, moving my body, but not in the
- 1:18Speaker 1: exact same way that I do back at home, not
- 1:21Speaker 1: necessarily following a prescribed training program for the marathon. I
- 1:26Speaker 1: have on deck, yes, running, yes, lifting weights, but then
- 1:30Speaker 1: answering the question what's best for Emily? By what do
- 1:33Speaker 1: I want to eat? Today, what do I want to
- 1:35Speaker 1: have for breakfast? Okay, smoothie right now?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Great?
- 1:39Speaker 1: Oh, sandwich from this amazing sandwich shop later perfect and
- 1:44Speaker 1: no guilt with any of that. I think that sometimes
- 1:49Speaker 1: when I'm home and I'm thinking about how to best
- 1:51Speaker 1: fuel my body and what I quote unquote should be doing,
- 1:55Speaker 1: I think of things differently when I'm in Europe, when
- 1:59Speaker 1: I'm on vacation, and I don't think of it the
- 2:01Speaker 1: same way.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I take time to be mindful.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I take time to write, to journal, to reflect, and
- 2:09Speaker 1: it feels really, really good. And so today as I
- 2:13Speaker 1: was journaling while sipping a Hugo Sprits, which is my
- 2:18Speaker 1: new thing, a little late, considering summer is on its
- 2:21Speaker 1: way out, but I can tell you that next summer
- 2:24Speaker 1: twenty five is going to be the summer of the
- 2:26Speaker 1: Hugo Sprits for me.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I digress.
- 2:28Speaker 1: While I was sitting and journaling and sipping, I was
- 2:32Speaker 1: thinking to myself, how can I do more of this
- 2:36Speaker 1: in my regular routine at home? How can I get
- 2:38Speaker 1: to a place where I feel more comfortable letting go
- 2:42Speaker 1: of the should And it's not easy, right, but really
- 2:47Speaker 1: it is being more intentional. And I know the word
- 2:51Speaker 1: is getting some flock right now because of the trends
- 2:53Speaker 1: in TikTok, But being more mindful that feels really good
- 2:58Speaker 1: for me, that idea of asking myself and maybe for you,
- 3:01Speaker 1: asking yourself what is good for insert your name today
- 3:07Speaker 1: and some days it's going to be quote unquote living
- 3:12Speaker 1: in a way that many consider to be healthy. It's
- 3:16Speaker 1: eating whole grains and vegetables and maybe drinking your greens,
- 3:22Speaker 1: and also leaning away from over consumption of anything from
- 3:29Speaker 1: alcohol to media. Right it's being mindful of your inputs
- 3:33Speaker 1: and your outputs, which I also believe is part of
- 3:36Speaker 1: this puzzle for me over here, the fact that I'm
- 3:39Speaker 1: not really sitting around scrolling on social I'm reading, I'm journaling.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'm walking around and looking at the art around me
- 3:49Speaker 1: and the buildings around me, of the culture around me.
- 3:53Speaker 1: And so when I think about how I can bring
- 3:55Speaker 1: more of this back into my day to day routine
- 3:57Speaker 1: at home, it really is putting some limits on myself,
- 4:04Speaker 1: asking myself what's best for Emily today, and how can
- 4:08Speaker 1: I be a little bit more mindful of those inputs
- 4:12Speaker 1: of those outputs. There's also something to be said about
- 4:15Speaker 1: removing yourself from the hustle or removing yourself from the
- 4:19Speaker 1: regular routine. Being six hours ahead where I was this week,
- 4:25Speaker 1: it helps me not feel like everything is so time sensitive.
- 4:29Speaker 1: It helped me feel a little bit more like I
- 4:32Speaker 1: had a handle on things. And it's understandable that it
- 4:35Speaker 1: could feel the other way for some, but that's.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Just how it felt for me.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And I liked that there's a pace to things in
- 4:44Speaker 1: Europe that I want to bring back with me, this
- 4:47Speaker 1: concept that nothing is so ridiculously time sensitive and it
- 4:53Speaker 1: will all get done in due time. And so I
- 4:56Speaker 1: plan to try to bring some of that back with
- 4:59Speaker 1: me today to keep that in mind when October gets hectic,
- 5:03Speaker 1: which I know it will. I promise on that note
- 5:06Speaker 1: that I have some exciting events to share with you
- 5:08Speaker 1: very soon, very very soon. But one thing at a time,
- 5:14Speaker 1: one breath, one step, one thing at a time. I
- 5:18Speaker 1: prompter you this week on this note is how can
- 5:21Speaker 1: you bring some of this ease into your every day?
- 5:24Speaker 1: How can you bring a little bit more ease into
- 5:28Speaker 1: your every day? And now a listener question, Hey, Emily,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I have been listening to Hurdle forever, but I feel
- 5:37Speaker 1: as though I have been so hesitant to write in
- 5:40Speaker 1: to call and leave a voice message because I didn't.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Want to feel judged.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I'm relatively new to running, and I feel as though
- 5:48Speaker 1: it's just not getting any easier. I want to stick
- 5:52Speaker 1: with it, but I'm not really feeling motivated by any
- 5:55Speaker 1: of the progress that I am or am not experiencing.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So my question for you is, how did you not
- 6:01Speaker 1: give up? I like the way that I feel after.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, but on this journey, it's just
- 6:07Speaker 1: not clicking for me.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Should I abandon it? Am I making a mistake? Please?
- 6:12Speaker 2: Any thoughts totally welcomed.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Jenny Oh, Jenny Oh, Jenny Oh, Jenny, I get it.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I've been there. I'm gonna be honest, I'm there right now.
- 6:23Speaker 1: This week of running for me has felt really junkie,
- 6:27Speaker 1: likely because of the time change. I have the grace
- 6:29Speaker 1: with myself and that's wonderful. But I remember when I
- 6:32Speaker 1: started running, and the summer that I started running, I
- 6:34Speaker 1: ran a half mile every day, and I don't think
- 6:37Speaker 1: it was until the end of that summer, like literally
- 6:40Speaker 1: fifty plus days of consecutive running later, that maybe I
- 6:44Speaker 1: experienced that it felt good on the run. So know
- 6:48Speaker 1: that you are not alone in how you feel, and
- 6:50Speaker 1: also know that it's entirely up to you. There is
- 6:55Speaker 1: so much value and reward and sticking with a hard
- 6:58Speaker 1: thing and realizing that in the act of doing the
- 7:01Speaker 1: hard thing that you are capable of doing other hard things.
- 7:04Speaker 1: But we know that the most guaranteed way to stick
- 7:08Speaker 1: with any sort of an exercise routine is to do
- 7:11Speaker 1: something that brings you joy, to do something.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That you enjoy.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And so I ask you this, what's the Why are
- 7:18Speaker 1: you running because you want to get to a place
- 7:20Speaker 1: that you like it, because you feel like it could
- 7:22Speaker 1: be good for you in your life?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Or are you doing it because you feel as though
- 7:26Speaker 2: you should be doing it? Why are you running? I
- 7:32Speaker 2: say it again, why are you running?
- 7:35Speaker 1: And know that it does take a while to click okay,
- 7:39Speaker 1: So again you're not alone in that it feels hard.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And I'm a decade into this thing and it still
- 7:44Speaker 1: feels hard at times. But I know that this hard thing,
- 7:47Speaker 1: when I'm done with it, it feels good. I know
- 7:50Speaker 1: that I have a strong why for running and that
- 7:53Speaker 1: it does remind me, Like I said, that I am
- 7:55Speaker 1: capable of hard things, both on the road, on the
- 7:58Speaker 1: trails and well beyond. And so that's why it works
- 8:01Speaker 1: for me. But you have to be honest with what
- 8:03Speaker 1: you want, what's your why, and take it from there.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Trust me though you're not alone. I can't say it enough.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And remember what I said earlier. One step, one breath,
- 8:15Speaker 1: one thing at a time. That's it for this week.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Please email in your listener questions over at Hello at
- 8:22Speaker 1: hurdle dot us. Again that email for your listener questions
- 8:26Speaker 1: is Hello at hurdle dot us. Another hurdle conquered. Catch
