- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:02daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19I have no updates for you guys today because Fashion Week is
- 0:24done. Everything's a little bit more
- 0:26chill now and I'm just getting back to regular schedule, so
- 0:31let's just get right in to the stories for today.
- 0:34So the first story is that Sabrina Carpenter's 25th
- 0:37birthday dress has sparked a discussion about the ethics of
- 0:41reselling fashion. So last weekend, Sabrina
- 0:44Carpenter, she turned 25 and she wore this short yellow slip
- 0:48dress for her 25th birthday. Her stylist, Jared Ellner said
- 0:51that the dress was inspired by Kate Hudson's dress in To win a
- 0:55Guy in 10 Days and that it was actually purchased on D Pop.
- 0:59So after she posted the photos from her birthday, TikTok user
- 1:03Jules Berg made a video explaining that it was actually
- 1:06her D Pop shop that Sabrina Stylist purchased from.
- 1:11In the video, she explains that she got a message on D Pop
- 1:13asking if she could overnight the dress to New York City.
- 1:16She said she wasn't in town, so she couldn't.
- 1:19This was last week, and in the message it said it needed to get
- 1:21there by Saturday. Then the buyer said that they
- 1:24were a stylist for Sabrina Carpenter.
- 1:26So Jules got her sister to ship it out, obviously, as you would.
- 1:31Jules said that she cropped the dress herself before selling it.
- 1:34So she kind of considers that she likes styled Sabrina
- 1:37Carpenter, which I thought was really cute.
- 1:39And she of course was like, I don't know if Sabrina was
- 1:41actually going to wear it. Her birthday came and went.
- 1:44I didn't see it, so I figured, OK, she didn't wear it.
- 1:46And then of course she posted Instagram photos in it and she
- 1:49freaked out. So Jules's video went viral and
- 1:54obviously this drove a lot of traffic to her Depop and what
- 1:58users found on Jules Depop were many fast fashion items marked
- 2:03up by up to 2000%. So, for example, she was selling
- 2:08a pair of Forever 21 shorts for $280, calling them rare and
- 2:14vintage. Users found the shorts reselling
- 2:16elsewhere for no more than $15. Also Forever 21.
- 2:21I was obsessed with Forever 21. Everything was like $10.00, So
- 2:26$280 is wild. So then another TikTok user
- 2:29named K Money. She found Jules's Burner D Pop
- 2:33account that Jules uses to buy the clothing, and then she sells
- 2:37it on her official account. So she found this to compare how
- 2:41much Jules is paying for items versus how much she's reselling
- 2:44them. So she found Hollister shorts
- 2:46that Jules had purchased a few weeks ago off her Burner
- 2:49account. She paid $35 for them, and then
- 2:52on her main Depop account she was reselling them for $90.00.
- 2:56So all of this has brought about many mixed reactions.
- 3:00On one side of the Internet, there's people saying, like, get
- 3:03your bag, that's what thrift flipping is.
- 3:06And kind of, you know, criticizing the users who are
- 3:09like digging into Jules's Depop history and what's going on
- 3:13there. Because that is just a common
- 3:15thing that happens on Depop, like Depop sellers.
- 3:17This is how they function. It's not unique to Jules and it
- 3:20kind of feels a bit like a pylon just because of the Sabrina
- 3:22Carpenter thing. And especially when you consider
- 3:25that for serious Depop sellers, curation is a huge part of why
- 3:30people purchase from them. Like you follow a specific Depop
- 3:33seller because you think their style and the stuff that they
- 3:36are purchasing and selling is really cool.
- 3:39So it kind of takes a few steps out of thrifting yourself.
- 3:42If you're like going to a store or you're sifting through Depop
- 3:45yourself. It takes those steps away from
- 3:47you if you follow a few key accounts that you know have a
- 3:50similar style to what you're trying to buy.
- 3:53And then the other side of the Internet is noting how fast
- 3:55fashion has ruined the second hand market.
- 3:58So Alyssa Hardy wrote for Teen Vogue quote, there's more to
- 4:02this than just overpaying and predatory marketing.
- 4:05It's the sheer volume of fast fashion that you would have to
- 4:07wade through when shopping secondhand these days.
- 4:10Walk into any consignment store or scroll through Depop, thread
- 4:13up and many other secondhand platforms for two minutes and
- 4:16you're bound to come across dozens of items from brands like
- 4:19Forever 21, Sheehan and Zara. Selling those pieces and keeping
- 4:22them in the cycle is better than, say, disposing of them or
- 4:25sending them off to global secondhand markets.
- 4:28But the issue is that the brands have overproduced to the point
- 4:31that we are losing the best parts of smaller scale
- 4:33secondhand shopping. And that's so true.
- 4:36You know, even when, I mean, I keep talking about myself like
- 4:39I'm elderly, but I feel like so I the, the culture in general,
- 4:45like just in the world has changed so much because of
- 4:48platforms like TikTok and just like the rise of social media in
- 4:51the last like 10 years. When I think about like
- 4:53thrifting, when that was really popular, when I was in my late
- 4:55teens and early 20s and all of us were like thrifting a lot,
- 4:59you were not seeing Forever 21 at thrift stores or any type of
- 5:03fast fashion. That's not what you found at
- 5:05thrift stores. It was usually higher quality
- 5:07items that were going to last. But now there's this like
- 5:10ethical dilemma where it's like for resellers, for example, like
- 5:13thrift flippers on Depop, if they're buying something at a
- 5:17very, you know, affordable rate and they're reselling it, but
- 5:21the quality of clothing or item that they're reselling is just
- 5:25not there and you know it. It's like a Forever 21 quality
- 5:28which is not going to last very long and somebody's paying
- 5:31$90.00 for it is that predatory. And as this Teen Vogue article
- 5:35notes, there is a lot of onus that needs to be placed on these
- 5:38brands for their overproduction. So I don't know, I thought that
- 5:42this was just really interesting.
- 5:43It's a pretty online story, but it's obviously about a pretty
- 5:46mainstream celebrity and it brings about a very interesting
- 5:49discussion that's happening in fashion right now.
- 5:54All right, the next story that I have for you guys is that Taylor
- 5:56Swift is trying to trademark Female Rage the musical.
- 6:01So it was recently discovered that Taylor Swift filed a
- 6:04trademark in the US for Female Rage the Musical.
- 6:07The Female Rage the musical trademark has been filed with
- 6:09the intention of seeking the rights to produce musical sound
- 6:12recordings, jewelry, clothing, live performances, as well as
- 6:16additional merchandise. Taylor recently used the term to
- 6:19describe the Tortured Poets Department segment of the era's
- 6:22tour, writing on Twitter on May 13th.
- 6:25Quote This post is dedicated to the new Tortured Poets section
- 6:28of the era's tour, AKA Female Rage, the Musical and everyone
- 6:32who made these memories so magical.
- 6:34Though a full on musical with Tortured Poets department would
- 6:37be sick. I'm actually like a massive fan
- 6:39of the album. I I liked it when it first came
- 6:42out and now I'm like obsessed. I can't stop listening to it.
- 6:45And you guys know I don't like slow songs normally.
- 6:49There's just something like, I know people do not like the
- 6:53Taylor Swift or they're not that they don't like but they're
- 6:56tired of or saying that like there needs to be a refresh with
- 6:59like the Taylor Swift Jack Antonoff collaboration.
- 7:03But there is actual crack in those songs when they
- 7:06collaborate on a song like that is my perfect song.
- 7:09I can't explain it something, it just does something to me, like
- 7:12it scratches my brain in like the perfect way.
- 7:15So I'm obsessed and I would love a musical with Torture Poets
- 7:18department, but it's more likely that she wants to trademark the
- 7:22name for New Era's Tour Merge and then other Swifties actually
- 7:25think it could be related to a New Era's Tour film that will
- 7:29feature this segment. But again, who knows?
- 7:31OK, so also Speaking of Taylor Swift, I considered if I wanted
- 7:35to discuss that commencement speech from the Chiefs player
- 7:39who I won't even dignify with a name, but I decided against it
- 7:43because he's a loser and I don't want to give him any more
- 7:46airtime. So just know me ignoring it was
- 7:49intentional and this is me ignoring it even though I just
- 7:52mentioned it. OK And the last ray that I have
- 7:55for you guys is Sophie Turner has opened up about her split
- 7:58from Joe Jonas in a new interview.
- 8:00This is like a celebrity, like mainstream celebrity heavy
- 8:03episode. So last year Sophie Turner and
- 8:06Joe Jonas split after four years of marriage and two children.
- 8:09Now, sitting down with British Vogue, Sophie has spoken out
- 8:12about that experience. I have a few different poll
- 8:15quotes that she said, but she basically spoke about what it
- 8:17was like to be mom shamed. She spoke about what it was like
- 8:20to be married to Joe Jonas and how that made her feel.
- 8:22And she spoke about kind of how difficult this split was.
- 8:25And she also talked about, which I don't have a quote for, but
- 8:27she also talked about Taylor Swift and how Taylor really
- 8:29helped her and her children during that time and how she
- 8:32just has like nothing but love for her, which was really sweet.
- 8:35So she said quote, I mean, those were the worst few days of my
- 8:38life, she said about the early days of the split.
- 8:41I remember I was on set. I was contracted to be on set
- 8:43for another two weeks. So I couldn't leave.
- 8:46My kids were in the States and I couldn't get to them because I
- 8:48had to finish Joan. And all these articles started
- 8:50coming out. So during those early days,
- 8:52Sophie was mom shamed a lot by the public.
- 8:55There were paparazzi photos all the time of Joe with the kids
- 8:58and Sophie without them or like going out.
- 9:01And obviously, as she explained prior, she still had a few weeks
- 9:05left of her contract so she couldn't get to her children.
- 9:08When the news broke, she said, quote, it hurt because I really
- 9:11do completely torture myself over every move I make as a
- 9:14mother. Mom, guilt is so real.
- 9:16I just kept having to say to myself, and none of this is
- 9:19true, you are a good mom and you've never been a partier.
- 9:22And then she dropped a bit of a bombshell about how she felt
- 9:24being married to Joe. Saying quote, there was a lot of
- 9:27attention on the three brothers and the wives.
- 9:30Well, we were always called the wives and I hated that.
- 9:33It was kind of this plus one feeling.
- 9:35I did not see Sophie Turner as a + 1 to Joe Jonas, but I can see
- 9:40how that would be really difficult if you were not down
- 9:43for that. Like, OK, if you guys listen to
- 9:45this podcast, you know that Married to Jonas, which was the
- 9:47reality show of Kevin Jonas and Danielle Jonas when they first
- 9:51got married. That is like my favorite show
- 9:53ever. I miss it so much.
- 9:55I'm so sad. I think it only had two or three
- 9:56seasons. I'm so sad it got cancelled.
- 9:59It's such a good show. And Danielle Jonas is built for
- 10:03this. Like she was built to be a
- 10:07supportive wife and just holds down the Fort, holds down the
- 10:10family while her husband is out being a Jonas brother.
- 10:13Like she does that so well and it seems to actually make her
- 10:18happy. But I can understand how for,
- 10:21you know, Priyanka or Sophie or other women who would come into
- 10:24the family who are chasing their own stardom, their own careers
- 10:29in that different kind of way, how it would be difficult.
- 10:32You would always feel in someones shadow.
- 10:33So I get it because the Jonas Brothers, there's such like an
- 10:36institution, you know, they're like this iconic kind of
- 10:40Hollywood Disney institution. So she did say that she is
- 10:43unhappy with how the divorce played out publicly, but then
- 10:46called Joe a great father and said she's confident that they
- 10:49will work it out as Co parents. She also talked about how in
- 10:52those days she would call her lawyer and just say like I can't
- 10:55do it. Like I just can't keep going.
- 10:57Like, this is so hard with all the paparazzi in the media
- 11:00attention. And it's like, I I really
- 11:02appreciate that she spoke out about that and it was really
- 11:04recent, right? Like, sometimes I think
- 11:06celebrities come out, women celebrities will come out and
- 11:09talk about how they were shamed or treated by the media.
- 11:13But it will be sometimes like a decade on, you know, it'll be a
- 11:16very long time ago. So it makes us as the public and
- 11:20as journalists and whatever, Like, it makes it easier for us
- 11:24to remove ourselves from that and be like, well, that was a
- 11:26different time. We didn't know better.
- 11:27Like that's just how we treated women.
- 11:29Or like, Oh my God, Can you believe we did that?
- 11:30We would never do that. Now her talking about this and
- 11:33being so open about how difficult this was for her
- 11:36mental health, that's really powerful because it literally
- 11:39was just last year. And I hope that this makes
- 11:42people reconsider how they covered that whole divorce.
- 11:45All right, guys. Well, that's it for today.
- 11:48Thank you so much for listening to mini Scroll.
