- 0:03Speaker 1: the Revised Code of Canon Law, signed by Pope John

- 0:08Speaker 1: official compilation of Ecclesiastical Law, promulgated in nineteen seventeen and
- 0:12Speaker 1: again in revised form in nineteen eighty three for Roman
- 0:16Speaker 1: Catholics of the Latin Rite. The Code obliges Roman Catholics
- 0:19Speaker 1: of Eastern Rites only when it specifically refers to them
- 0:22Speaker 1: or clearly applies to all Roman Catholics. For centuries following
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Council of Trent fifteen forty five to fifteen sixty three,
- 0:29Speaker 1: the need for a codification of the disciplinary law of
- 0:31Speaker 1: the Church had been recognized, but not until nineteen o
- 0:35Speaker 1: four was a plan put forth. On March nineteenth of
- 0:37Speaker 1: that year, Pope Pious Texts announced his plan of procedure
- 0:40Speaker 1: and appointed a commission of cardinals under the presidency of
- 0:43Speaker 1: Pietro later Cardinal GASPARI to supervise the work. All Roman
- 0:47Speaker 1: Catholic bishops, superiors of religious orders, and faculties of Roman
- 0:52Speaker 1: Catholic universities were invited to collaborate. Pope benedictsy fifteen promulgated
- 0:56Speaker 1: the first Code on Pentecost Sunday, May twenty seventh, nineteen seventeen.
- 1:00Speaker 1: The new code replaced the Corpus Juris Canonici Corpus of
- 1:03Speaker 1: canon Law, an earlier compilation of church law that had
- 1:06Speaker 1: been in force since the Middle Ages. The New Code
- 1:09Speaker 1: of Canon Law was a systematic arrangement of the ecclesiastical
- 1:12Speaker 1: law then in force. This legislation was set forth in
- 1:15Speaker 1: two thousand, five hundred and fourteen canons or norms that
- 1:18Speaker 1: were organized under topical headings in five books. Some twenty
- 1:22Speaker 1: six thousand citations of prior church legislation were listed, including
- 1:26Speaker 1: approximately eighty four hundred from the Decretum Gratiani Decree of Gration,
- 1:31Speaker 1: a twelfth century collection, two hundred from general councils of
- 1:35Speaker 1: the Church, thousand from papal legislation, eleven two hundred from
- 1:39Speaker 1: the norms of Roman congregations, the administrative bodies of the
- 1:43Speaker 1: Roman Curia, and eight hundred from liturgical books. Between nineteen
- 1:47Speaker 1: twenty three and nineteen thirty nine, Cardinal Gaspari and Justinian Cerati,
- 1:51Speaker 1: a Hungarian canonist and the Archbishop of Estergom, published nine
- 1:55Speaker 1: volumes of the sources of the Code under the title
- 1:57Speaker 1: Fontes Juris Canonici Sources of the Code of Canon Law.
- 2:01Speaker 1: After the promulgation of the First Code, a great mass
- 2:04Speaker 1: of ecclesiastical legislation, published periodically in the Acta Apostoliiccetis Acts
- 2:10Speaker 1: of the Apostolic See, began to accumulate, and the need
- 2:14Speaker 1: for revision became clear. On January twenty fifth, nineteen fifty nine,
- 2:18Speaker 1: Pope John Daithort established a papal commission of cardinals and
- 2:21Speaker 1: experts to undertake a new revision of the Code. On
- 2:24Speaker 1: January twenty fifth, nineteen eighty three, Pope John Paul the
- 2:28Speaker 1: Second signed the Second Code of Canon Law, to take
- 2:30Speaker 1: effect on November twenty seventh, nineteen eighty three. This second
- 2:34Speaker 1: Code superseded the first one. The Second Code, written in Latin,
- 2:38Speaker 1: consists of one thou seven hundred and fifty two canons,
- 2:41Speaker 1: organized into seven books. Books I in A two defined
- 2:44Speaker 1: the positions and responsibilities of both the laity and the clergy.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Book three deals with the promulgation of the church, including
- 2:51Speaker 1: the subjects of teaching, preaching, and the Church's relations with
- 2:55Speaker 1: the media. Book four contains guidelines for the administration of
- 2:58Speaker 1: the sacraments with Dad. The greatest emphasis on the sacrament
- 3:01Speaker 1: of marriage. Book V concerns the church's handling of money, property,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and other temporal goods. Book six deals with sanctions, reducing
- 3:08Speaker 1: the number of excommunicable actions from thirty seven to seven,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and Books seven provides a structure for the establishment of
- 3:14Speaker 1: church courts and the settlement of internal disputes. A chief
- 3:17Speaker 1: element of the Second Code is the definition of the
- 3:19Speaker 1: Church as the people of God, rather than as an institution.
