- 0:00Don't forget. This is just the start of our busy night here on the
- 0:02network. We've got hockey at the top of the hour as coach Cavin the
- 0:06Boys wrap up the regular season against Vermont that has home iice implications for the
- 0:10playoffs face off at seven oh five. Adam joins me here on the network
- 0:14with Gino Oriema as the Huskies get set for the Big East Tournament. Now,
- 0:18you rested Aliyah in Paige and a good chunk of the fourth Nika as
- 0:22well. In the game against Providence. Other than the point production, seems
- 0:26like they handle some things pretty well. I thought so. I mean,
- 0:30at one point I did say, I don't think we're going to score,
- 0:34you know, so thank god we have a big lead. You know,
- 0:37we miss layup, we missed wide open shots, we did like, you
- 0:41know, crazy crazy things. And yet it's the same group that I forget
- 0:47what game it was. They looked terrific, you know, out there.
- 0:50So the offensive part, yeah, that can be a struggle, but you
- 0:54know, we played pretty good defense. You know, got a bunch of
- 1:00had a bunch of really good things done on that end of the floor.
- 1:03And the most important thing is we got the rest you know, Aliya and
- 1:07Nica and Paige. You know, with three games coming up this week,
- 1:14this weekend coming up, you probably need all the rest you can get.
- 1:19Yeah, And it's kind of the same thing as of last season. But
- 1:22the difference is that group as a whole was more of a veteran group,
- 1:26whereas this year you have three seniors and four freshmen and a couple off the
- 1:30bench. Maybe Amari comes back, she can give you a couple of minutes
- 1:33an esh. But it's certainly a younger group than you had at this time
- 1:37of year ago. Oh yeah, yeah, I don't remember when four freshmen
- 1:42play such a prominent role in us having to win the Biggiest championship with hecket
- 1:49was probably nineteen eighty eight eighty nine, when Megan and Debbie were freshmen.
- 1:55It was probably the last time when that many freshmen had to play, you
- 1:59know, that many minutes in that big a role. So you know,
- 2:05it's all on the three seniors. You know, they've got to they've got
- 2:08to carry the load, and those other four just have to have to do
- 2:12their part, you know, make sure that they do what they have to
- 2:15do, and then whatever we get, we get and what are you going
- 2:21to do? You know, this is the this is the hand that we're
- 2:25playing. We happen to be at Mohegan. You know, they deal the
- 2:30cards over there, and sometimes they're in your favor and sometimes they're not.
- 2:35Well, let's hope a joker doesn't pop up in your case. How do
- 2:38you think Page is handled this season? I'm sure she wasn't expecting a log
- 2:42the minutes that she had, but of course, given the hand that you've
- 2:44been dealt as we talk cards here, it is what it is. But
- 2:46how do you think she's handled her first year back? Oh? I thought
- 2:51she's done amazingly well when you look at missing a whole year and then coming
- 2:59back and uh after the rocky start, you know, trying to blend in
- 3:05and trying to get her legs back. There's been games where she's just been
- 3:10totally dominant, and there's been moments where you would think she never missed any
- 3:19time at all. And she's held up great physically, and now it's just
- 3:27a matter of can we you know, can we give her enough help?
- 3:32But other than that, I think it's gone even better than I that I
- 3:38anticipated. Did you and now if this team had been fully healthy. Would
- 3:44you have envisioned her as a four where she is now basically, I mean,
- 3:46I know it's mostly on the defensive end where she's that four. But
- 3:50we've seen her post up a lot this season, maybe more than than maybe
- 3:53you would have envisioned. I don't I don't envision that happened. There may
- 4:00have been some isolated instances, but with you know, with Jenna being available,
- 4:10Yana being available, Caroline being available, Aubrey being available, Asy being
- 4:15available, I don't see that happening, you know, but there may have
- 4:18been times when you know, we went really small, but for playing out
- 4:26a position and for having to battle those guys defensive on the defensive end down
- 4:31air, she you know, like I said earlier this year, I don't
- 4:38know that any player in the country has been asked to do as much as
- 4:43she's asked as we've asked her to do. So it's a lot, but
- 4:48she thrives on that. Yeah, and the work that she puts in the
- 4:51gym is noticeable. Her creativity around the room has been really fun to watch.
- 4:56Yeah, that's the thing about you know about Page is that there isn't
- 5:00a shot that she can't make because there isn't a shot. She hasn't practiced
- 5:06in the gym a lot, And to me, I think that's that is
- 5:12what separates her from a lot of other players around the country, is that
- 5:17she is a real student of the game and she doesn't just want to be
- 5:24good or talk about being good. She actually goes in the gym every day
- 5:29and tries to perfect it. And you have to admire that because you were
- 5:35national player to hear as a freshman and would have been very easy to just
- 5:40you know, keep the status quo. But she's you know, she's never
- 5:43satisfied with with where she is. Is there a player in the past that
- 5:47has that same kind of work ethic? Now, grant, you've had a
- 5:49lot of all Americans and they spend a lot of time in the gym,
- 5:51But can you equate her to anyone or maybe a couple of players that you've
- 5:55had in the past. You know, there there have been, and it's
- 6:00different now, it's different today. But you know they're when we couldn't work
- 6:06with our players in April and in May and June, they had to find
- 6:12there on their own September, you know, so you know when Dee and
- 6:17Sue and Shay and you know, Keish and Rita and all those guys.
- 6:24When they were here, they were in the gym all the time, you
- 6:27know, because one because we weren't there, so they loved being in the
- 6:31gym. You know, they were just playing and having fun. Go to
- 6:34guy er gym and play pick up with all the guys. You know.
- 6:39So today's different, you know, I get it. That's why it's I
- 6:43think remarkable that we have kids that are gym rats that want to be in
- 6:47there. I think that's that's a throwback. That that that I really,
- 6:56you know, I find, you know, really rewarding. Speaking say,
- 7:00she's done a hell of a job at Vandy this year, six seed for
- 7:02the SEC and that's that's not too shabby in your two No, No,
- 7:06I think she's done a tremendous job. And I don't know when they play,
- 7:11I'm gonna have to find out. But yeah, no, because the
- 7:15situation she walked into was obviously in need of a lot of work, and
- 7:21for it to happen this quickly, and to you, she said, go
- 7:28from that to being the sixth seed, I wouldn't be surprised if they have
- 7:34a pretty good run in the tournament. Maybe the NCAA's too. Could you
- 7:39imagine Vanderbilt coming to stores, you know, knowing the NCAA committee, they
- 7:44would probably love to do that, you know. So it is, It
- 7:47is a great story, and can't say that I'm surprised more with Gino as
- 7:54the Wells Fargo you kind of women's basketball coaches show continues at a moment here on Learfield
