- 0:00Speaker 1: Buleg Cap Podcast special guest in here, the legendary Matt Barnes. Welcome,
- 0:06Speaker 1: rather welcome, Welcome Man, thanks for having me, NBA veteran
- 0:10Speaker 1: legendary podcaster, NBA broadcaster personality, he's got hands, the man
- 0:17Speaker 1: of many talents. Yeah, I appreciate you pulling up man
- 0:20Speaker 1: for real. Bro. Thank you for having me. Bro. You're
- 0:22Speaker 1: always one of my favorite players to watch, BRO when
- 0:25Speaker 1: you were playing, because I always like, look at the
- 0:27Speaker 1: players who I'm like, Man, I hate watching him, but
- 0:31Speaker 1: if he was on my team, I would love. I
- 0:34Speaker 1: just played hard. I mean I was a football player,
- 0:36Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I played football growing up.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I kind of got into basketball late junior highest because
- 0:40Speaker 1: I kept getting taller and I started taking more serious.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But I grew up being football, So I just looked
- 0:45Speaker 1: at myself as like a football player out there playing basketball.
- 0:48Speaker 1: So I liked the physicality. I played hard, and you know,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I got fifteen years out of it, so it was cool.
- 0:55Speaker 1: What position did you play football? Receiver? That makes sense.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I was nice, not the two min horn. I was
- 0:59Speaker 1: nice to I led the nation in touchdowns. I was
- 1:01Speaker 1: all American, like the top receiver coming out of high school.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Where are you actually, like originally from So born in
- 1:08Speaker 1: San Jose, lived there for about six seven years, and
- 1:11Speaker 1: then did the rest of my time from like eight
- 1:13Speaker 1: to eighteen in Sacramento, and then came down to La
- 1:16Speaker 1: for u C. L A and pretty much been in
- 1:19Speaker 1: La ever since. Yeah, so you are a West Coast
- 1:21Speaker 1: boy for real, for real, Kelly. Yeah, yeah, I mean
- 1:25Speaker 1: so obviously growing up you had to be a Kings fan.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Chris Webber, So, I grew up a Lakers fan. The
- 1:32Speaker 1: Magic Johnson you know, showtime in the early eighties when
- 1:35Speaker 1: I started with My dad liked the Lakers, so I
- 1:37Speaker 1: grew up really liking them in the forty nine ers,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and then the Kings came, you know, when I got
- 1:42Speaker 1: to Sack, you know, the Kings were the team, but
- 1:44Speaker 1: they weren't very good. So I started, like, I always
- 1:47Speaker 1: have respect because that's where I was, you know, kind
- 1:49Speaker 1: of growing up at but you always paid attention. Yeah yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But once they got web and and j will First
- 1:55Speaker 1: and Bib and those are the you know, those are
- 1:57Speaker 1: the homies, that's when I really kind of started rooting
- 1:59Speaker 1: for him. So I remember being at UCLA when that
- 2:01Speaker 1: King's Lakership was going on that was a serious beef.
- 2:04Speaker 1: That shit was fun in the early two thousands. Yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 1: that's one of like I feel like when we talk
- 2:08Speaker 1: about like teams that like never got a ring. Oh yeah,
- 2:11Speaker 1: one of the greatest to never win it. I think
- 2:12Speaker 1: it's like the Kings and the running gun Sons, like
- 2:14Speaker 1: the seven seconds or Less Sons. One of those Portland
- 2:18Speaker 1: teams were good. Oh, those Portland teams that even even
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Pacers teams. Yeah, those the mouse at the Palace here,
- 2:25Speaker 1: those guys were supposed to be the best team in
- 2:26Speaker 1: the league. Yeah, yeah, it's crazy. You were like, uh,
- 2:30Speaker 1: you were kind of like I feel like we were
- 2:33Speaker 1: just talking a bit off the camera, but you were
- 2:35Speaker 1: kind of like the veteran that I felt like the
- 2:37Speaker 1: young dudes really also respected on your teams. Would that
- 2:41Speaker 1: be there to say, you know, I just I led
- 2:43Speaker 1: by example, you know what I mean, Like, I played
- 2:45Speaker 1: my ass off, I'll do anything for the team. They
- 2:47Speaker 1: know I'm team first, and I treated them like my family.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So whenever there was smoked on the court, they knew
- 2:52Speaker 1: I was gonna be in it. Like all the majority
- 2:54Speaker 1: of the times I got fined, I got fined like
- 2:56Speaker 1: a lost Probably they said something over like half a
- 2:58Speaker 1: million dollars in fines. Jesus. It was never me starting something,
- 3:03Speaker 1: was me coming to the defense of a teammate, the
- 3:05Speaker 1: only person to paying my files that Marion was cold,
- 3:07Speaker 1: but everyone else let me take them. Shit, I was
- 3:09Speaker 1: fucked up. Did you defend somebody? So yeah, man, I mean,
- 3:12Speaker 1: like I said, I mean, that's just like I said.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I grew up with, you know, a father that if
- 3:16Speaker 1: your brother and sister fight, fight, you better fight. If
- 3:18Speaker 1: they win and lose, you better fight. You're gonna get
- 3:20Speaker 1: your ass. So are you gonna get your ass whip?
- 3:22Speaker 1: So that's kind of how I grew up. So I
- 3:24Speaker 1: just always looked at my teammates as family. It's just
- 3:26Speaker 1: like whenever it was not that I'm the toughest, baddest motherfuckers,
- 3:29Speaker 1: but I'm always gonna have just no, I'm always gonna
- 3:31Speaker 1: have your back, right, what right or wrong, I'm gonna
- 3:34Speaker 1: have your back. So that's just kind of the way
- 3:36Speaker 1: I played. So you know, when I spoke, I was
- 3:38Speaker 1: never the star. I was a role player, but I
- 3:39Speaker 1: was never the star whatever. But you were starting a
- 3:41Speaker 1: lot of your career, man, But every team I was on,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you know, like I was a respected voice, Like I
- 3:45Speaker 1: wouldn't say too much, you know, I pick and choose
- 3:47Speaker 1: when I spoke. But I was a respected voice beginning
- 3:49Speaker 1: because I think I just led by example. Yeah, it's great.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So when you had Kobe's back and you gotta fined,
- 3:55Speaker 1: he paid your fis as far as ye. The only
- 3:57Speaker 1: dude that's crazy because I've been watching, like obviously this
- 4:01Speaker 1: year there was a you' The guy who I can't
- 4:05Speaker 1: stand right now because of how he's treated my son's
- 4:07Speaker 1: is Patrick Beverly because he got at your guy CP
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the back and then earlier this year he later ate. Now,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I like Pat Bev. I just I don't like everything
- 4:17Speaker 1: he does, and I don't have to. He says some
- 4:19Speaker 1: pretty crazy shit too. Yeah, yeah, he says them out,
- 4:22Speaker 1: he says them atlantic. No, it wasn't really to me.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It was to to CP, you know. And I'm just thinking,
- 4:27Speaker 1: like I just didn't like. I feel like media now
- 4:32Speaker 1: is it's so it's less about you know, kind of
- 4:35Speaker 1: covering what we're watching and critiquing, and it's more just
- 4:37Speaker 1: about being disrespectful exactly. I just don't like that, you know.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like, if you know the game.
- 4:42Speaker 1: There's so much more you can talk about than being
- 4:44Speaker 1: just straight disrespectful. And it's tough because we do have
- 4:46Speaker 1: to critique, especially for more players. We have to critique
- 4:49Speaker 1: people we played with before, of course, and that's part
- 4:51Speaker 1: of the job. But I feel like you can critique
- 4:52Speaker 1: without being disrespectful. Yeah, And I just think now, I
- 4:55Speaker 1: mean that you see guys like Skip Bayless, he's tripping
- 4:59Speaker 1: right now, and you know, Steven A. Smith has his runs,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and I just feel like guys like are so disrespectful
- 5:05Speaker 1: now that players coming in and think they kind of
- 5:07Speaker 1: have to they have to, like want the guys carry
- 5:10Speaker 1: that type of energy, But we don't because we really
- 5:12Speaker 1: lived it. I mean, these dudes that are out here
- 5:15Speaker 1: doing whatever they do and I respect everyone in their life.
- 5:17Speaker 1: The talking heads are different than the former player. Man.
- 5:19Speaker 1: We have a different we have a we have a
- 5:21Speaker 1: natural leg up. We really lived this, you know what
- 5:24Speaker 1: I mean. So I just didn't like the way and
- 5:27Speaker 1: the crazy part was like we had a little back
- 5:29Speaker 1: and forth like this is all about ratings, you know
- 5:32Speaker 1: what I mean. ESPN loved it. He was on TV
- 5:33Speaker 1: like the next six six days. Yeah, they put him
- 5:36Speaker 1: on and he has stuff to say, like I think
- 5:38Speaker 1: he's going to be good at it when he gets done.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I just you know, like his you know, like come on, man,
- 5:42Speaker 1: we don't need that coming, you know, the way he
- 5:44Speaker 1: was talking about Chris, and then like I think it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: obvious there's like a personal vendetta there. I mean, we
- 5:49Speaker 1: can go back, fine, and it can be that's right
- 5:51Speaker 1: right right the poorth unless you guys really gonna fight.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And to me, that's and to me, that's where someone
- 5:56Speaker 1: like who I love to seeing Paul Pierce on TV,
- 5:58Speaker 1: but sometimes any time Lebron would get brought up, you
- 6:02Speaker 1: would just be like, Okay, we get it, bro, Like
- 6:05Speaker 1: we get it, Like you don't fuck with Lebron. It's
- 6:08Speaker 1: the first. It's the personal stuff, you know what I mean.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And it's just naturally as competitors, that's just how we are.
- 6:13Speaker 1: But I mean, if you're gonna be on TV and
- 6:15Speaker 1: and really do with you know what you have the
- 6:18Speaker 1: capability of doing, you can't be you can be biased
- 6:21Speaker 1: in kind of like a cool or a funny way,
- 6:23Speaker 1: but you can't be biased in a hater way. Exactly.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You can't be a hater. You can't be a hater
- 6:27Speaker 1: that's some real ship because it's just you know, look
- 6:29Speaker 1: at the oldhead hat and like, I just don't like,
- 6:32Speaker 1: I mean, this is a whole other direction even going.
- 6:34Speaker 1: But the kind of like former players, I feel like
- 6:36Speaker 1: they have to disrespect the guys that are playing now.
- 6:39Speaker 1: It happens a lot, and it just kind of respect
- 6:41Speaker 1: the evolution, you know. I mean, I get the money's
- 6:43Speaker 1: crazy high, and some of these guys, I'm never gonna say, man,
- 6:46Speaker 1: don't deserve the money. But you know, some of these
- 6:48Speaker 1: guys get paid a ton of money and don't put
- 6:49Speaker 1: up the numbers that some of the older dudes used
- 6:51Speaker 1: to get do by a long shot, and they're getting
- 6:54Speaker 1: paid and and and you know, again, I think it's
- 6:58Speaker 1: one of those situations where we have to gritique. That's
- 7:00Speaker 1: our job. But I think you can, you know, just
- 7:03Speaker 1: leave the hate out, like there's just no room for you.
- 7:05Speaker 1: To me. You always want to love and push it
- 7:07Speaker 1: and courage the next generation to continue to be greater
- 7:09Speaker 1: and continuing to raise the bar. And if you're gonna
- 7:11Speaker 1: critique somebody, critique them from a place of like if
- 7:14Speaker 1: they see that they might be able to take something
- 7:16Speaker 1: from that to their game. Criticism. It's about being constructed
- 7:21Speaker 1: because otherwise you're being a dick, Like, really help these
- 7:23Speaker 1: young dudes out off the court. I feel like they
- 7:25Speaker 1: can do, you know, especially some of these legends that
- 7:27Speaker 1: are that are on TV. And I'm not saying, you know,
- 7:29Speaker 1: all they do is disrespectful. There's times I'm saying, like, damn, bro,
- 7:33Speaker 1: you used to play a player, say some ship like that,
- 7:35Speaker 1: you know what I mean. But it's like, you know,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I think that the only guy who like I'm not
- 7:41Speaker 1: everyone looks the other way on because guys like KD
- 7:44Speaker 1: and there's been a lot of people. But I just
- 7:46Speaker 1: feel like Charles Barkley is in a space in his
- 7:49Speaker 1: own where Barkley can just just just sha might get
- 7:54Speaker 1: some ship. But Charles doesn't give a fuck what you
- 7:56Speaker 1: Charles don't give a fuck. And I think it's just
- 7:58Speaker 1: a part of the culture. Now. I don't always agree
- 8:00Speaker 1: with Charles, but I love the fuck this is me well.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I think also, Chuck's been doing that job for like
- 8:06Speaker 1: twenty twenty five years now, so like he's his NBA
- 8:09Speaker 1: career has almost his broadcasting careers almost as great as
- 8:14Speaker 1: some people only know him as broadcast you know, and
- 8:17Speaker 1: but the one thing I love about him is he's
- 8:19Speaker 1: always been as a player, he was this way, this
- 8:21Speaker 1: is me, take her to leave it, you know what
- 8:23Speaker 1: I mean. So I always you know, respect Chuck. But
- 8:25Speaker 1: again he's one of the you know people in the
- 8:27Speaker 1: spaces where when you know, I think something like you
- 8:31Speaker 1: do you give him a past because it's Chuck, you
- 8:33Speaker 1: know what I mean. I think he kind of him
- 8:34Speaker 1: and yeah, kind of gets a pass. People be on
- 8:36Speaker 1: Shack's ass too, but I mean a Shack like, what
- 8:38Speaker 1: can you really say to Shaq? You know what I mean?
- 8:40Speaker 1: So I think there's a few guys that are just
- 8:42Speaker 1: like they're gonna do what they're gonna do. It's not
- 8:46Speaker 1: always hating, but it's just you know, sometimes some credise
- 8:49Speaker 1: ship come at the mouth. But I mean outside of that,
- 8:50Speaker 1: I just think, you know, we should always try it again, critique,
- 8:53Speaker 1: but make it ruck constructive, kidder sism, something they can
- 8:55Speaker 1: adder their life or to their game. Yeah. No, you
- 8:57Speaker 1: obviously had a fifteen year NBA career When you guys
- 9:02Speaker 1: were playing, how much did you actually pay attention to
- 9:07Speaker 1: the talking heads, to the sports talk shows? It was different,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you know what I mean, because you got to think.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I came into the league in the early two thousands,
- 9:14Speaker 1: you know what I mean, So it was maybe like
- 9:15Speaker 1: the last five or six years it was. It was
- 9:18Speaker 1: a part of that era. I think I retired to seventeen,
- 9:21Speaker 1: so the wave it kind of already hit. But now
- 9:24Speaker 1: it's you know, it always continues to evolve. But you
- 9:27Speaker 1: hear it. I mean, no matter what anyone says, you
- 9:29Speaker 1: hear everything. And I remember getting a chance to interview
- 9:31Speaker 1: Kobe on our show and we asked him, you know,
- 9:33Speaker 1: because he was criticized so much as like, you know
- 9:35Speaker 1: what what criticism hurt the most? He said, all of them.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's like I heard all of them, you know what
- 9:39Speaker 1: I mean. So and someone is locked in and focused
- 9:42Speaker 1: on what he's supposed to do, Like, no matter what
- 9:44Speaker 1: a player says, he hears it everything. Yeah, and they
- 9:47Speaker 1: take it in. I think, I think that's anybody, right.
- 9:49Speaker 1: But see I used to be the opposite. Like I
- 9:51Speaker 1: used to be the guy that would you know, be
- 9:54Speaker 1: on the table getting stretched or getting treatment before the
- 9:56Speaker 1: game and looking on Twitter for people talking shit to
- 9:58Speaker 1: me just to kind of motivate amore, you know what
- 10:00Speaker 1: I mean, Like like use it as kind of like
- 10:02Speaker 1: a chip where like continue to light the fire, just
- 10:05Speaker 1: you know, to say fuck you to the haters. But
- 10:09Speaker 1: it's a lot, man, you know, and everyone kind of
- 10:11Speaker 1: handles it the way they handle it. But just it's
- 10:15Speaker 1: a twenty four hour news cycle. They always need news.
- 10:17Speaker 1: That's why I think the quality of news has gone
- 10:20Speaker 1: down because it has much of it. It has for sure,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I think, I mean, of course, not even just sports, yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 1: in general. And I think too, like you know this,
- 10:28Speaker 1: probably more than anyone, Like, I think the networks have
- 10:30Speaker 1: all figured out what generates ratings is these debate shows.
- 10:35Speaker 1: So as soon as you wake up, you got Nick right,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and then you got skipping shedded, and then you got
- 10:40Speaker 1: Collin cow heard, and then you got so it's like
- 10:43Speaker 1: it's almost like what CNN figured out ten years prior,
- 10:47Speaker 1: is like, if we just have people on TV arguing yeah,
- 10:50Speaker 1: no question, it's going to be a lot more better
- 10:52Speaker 1: for the bottom line than if we actually just have
- 10:55Speaker 1: people analyzing the game and showing highlights. It's all about ratings,
- 10:58Speaker 1: that's all. It's about about views, eyeballs ratings. I'm curious
- 11:02Speaker 1: because I saw you you spoke about what Skip tweeted.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Obviously DeMar Hamlin is going through it. That was a
- 11:10Speaker 1: very scary situation as a pro athlete. Yeah, obviously you
- 11:13Speaker 1: know there's there's risking football. You played football, but you know,
- 11:18Speaker 1: it was definitely a scary situation. And then the interaction
- 11:23Speaker 1: between Shannon and Skip on TV today was pretty it
- 11:26Speaker 1: was it was hard to watch. I just it's it's
- 11:29Speaker 1: disheartening because you know, as a as a player, I
- 11:32Speaker 1: used to really like Skip, but I thought his takes
- 11:35Speaker 1: sometimes or you know, would toe the line. But he
- 11:38Speaker 1: was good, like he knew what he was talking about.
- 11:39Speaker 1: But I just feel like, I don't know, I think
- 11:42Speaker 1: maybe as his celebrity has grown, is his his entitlement
- 11:46Speaker 1: and his lack of respect for players. His co host
- 11:53Speaker 1: has just kind of continued just to climb. And I
- 11:56Speaker 1: felt though, although he said some other stuff in his tweets,
- 11:59Speaker 1: like it was just an insensitive and an untimely thing
- 12:03Speaker 1: to tweet out for the world to see at that
- 12:06Speaker 1: time when this man is literally his heart is beating,
- 12:10Speaker 1: stop beating twice on the field, you know what I mean.
- 12:13Speaker 1: But Skip is smart, you know, so when Skip said,
- 12:15Speaker 1: you know, how can they think about canceling or whatever
- 12:18Speaker 1: exact words, were this is so meaningful, but then at
- 12:20Speaker 1: the end he knew. I was like, yeah, this is
- 12:23Speaker 1: a little spicy, so let me put you know, everything
- 12:25Speaker 1: seems so irrelevant right now though, like he knew what
- 12:27Speaker 1: he was doing. Like you just like again, wrong time,
- 12:29Speaker 1: wrong place for the tweet. But I think, like I said,
- 12:32Speaker 1: it's been building up, like the way he disrespects Shannon
- 12:35Speaker 1: today this morning was Shannon was on his malap But
- 12:37Speaker 1: like two weeks, a couple of weeks ago, a couple
- 12:39Speaker 1: of weeks ago, it was bad. And I made a
- 12:43Speaker 1: post today talking about like I've had and I'm not
- 12:45Speaker 1: gonna give up no names, but I've had to put
- 12:47Speaker 1: out two fires of people currently in the NBA. They
- 12:52Speaker 1: wanted to whoop skips ass and I had to connect
- 12:55Speaker 1: dots to to get you know, these kind of phone
- 12:58Speaker 1: calls handah, because like I said, it's just there again,
- 13:01Speaker 1: there's a line, there's and and to me he's and
- 13:04Speaker 1: again he well you know he has a long line
- 13:07Speaker 1: of you know, respectable work in this business. But again,
- 13:10Speaker 1: I just feel like of late, it's been crazy, but
- 13:12Speaker 1: it's just like people are tired of that, you know
- 13:15Speaker 1: what I mean. Like at the end of these are
- 13:16Speaker 1: men like you're talking to men that that that that
- 13:18Speaker 1: that raise their children, you know what I mean, and
- 13:20Speaker 1: have to you know, walk around in public with you
- 13:22Speaker 1: just like blatantly disrespect Like, motherfucker's not playing that no more.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I think too, Like when you know, I think sometimes
- 13:28Speaker 1: this happens with stephen A because like obviously Skip is
- 13:31Speaker 1: the biggest personality on that channel. As as by the
- 13:34Speaker 1: way I treated this the other day, I think it
- 13:37Speaker 1: was Christmas and stephen A. Smith was on TV all
- 13:40Speaker 1: fucking day. I was like, this is the hardest work.
- 13:44Speaker 1: How much money could ESPN be paying this guy? Because
- 13:46Speaker 1: you know, he's he's he's he's getting it. I'm going
- 13:49Speaker 1: n happy for Steve. No, he's killing it. He's killing it,
- 13:51Speaker 1: And I understand. But but I'm from a standpoint like
- 13:53Speaker 1: I understand Skip, Like Skip has that lane. So it's
- 13:56Speaker 1: almost like a one up type. How can I keep
- 13:58Speaker 1: how can I keep on having my name in everyone's
- 14:01Speaker 1: mouth and being right? You know what I mean. So
- 14:03Speaker 1: it's just like but I just feel like lately he's
- 14:06Speaker 1: been in and you've seen times we're just like Shannon.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I mean, I got a lot of respect for Shannon sharp.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I mean there's a lot of times where you can
- 14:12Speaker 1: see he's taking deep breaths and they kind of calm
- 14:14Speaker 1: down from having to ring this dude's neck on on
- 14:16Speaker 1: live TV. And you would and and and you know,
- 14:19Speaker 1: there's times where I really do feel like that they
- 14:21Speaker 1: have some genuine love for each other. No, Yeah, they
- 14:23Speaker 1: definitely do. Shannon had a lot of because we had
- 14:25Speaker 1: him on the show. Not to cut you off, but
- 14:26Speaker 1: Shannon has a lot, like paid a lot of love
- 14:28Speaker 1: and respect to to Skip making that show happen, and
- 14:31Speaker 1: how skips they wouldn't work with no one. So there's
- 14:33Speaker 1: a lot of love there. Like he's openly said that,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but I think of late like, to me, it's that
- 14:38Speaker 1: that that entitled arrogance that he he he he throws
- 14:41Speaker 1: out there in the one a few weeks ago when
- 14:44Speaker 1: he was trying to put his glasses back on him
- 14:46Speaker 1: just like, yeh know, that was fucking crazy, you out
- 14:49Speaker 1: of your mind? Yeah, like I was seeing a rock
- 14:51Speaker 1: waller on a chihuahua. Yeah, Like nobody talks like you
- 14:53Speaker 1: shouldn't talk to anybody like that, man, Like that's that's
- 14:58Speaker 1: that's your true feelings, you know what I mean. That's
- 15:00Speaker 1: sposed to be your man right there and and to
- 15:02Speaker 1: let it happen on TV. Like it just to me
- 15:04Speaker 1: that that ship that Reeks entitled me, I wonder how
- 15:07Speaker 1: long that's gonna I always after I saw today, I
- 15:09Speaker 1: was like, this can't last much longer. I mean, the
- 15:11Speaker 1: same thing I put the same thing out there. I'm
- 15:13Speaker 1: just like, you know, portunately, this show, I feel like
- 15:15Speaker 1: it's going to come to an end because like there's
- 15:17Speaker 1: only so much that's gonna take, you know what I mean?
- 15:18Speaker 1: And Skip is who he is and there and it
- 15:21Speaker 1: sucks because they're really good. They're great to get a
- 15:23Speaker 1: really good show. It's they're better than Skipping stephen A.
- 15:27Speaker 1: To me, they're they're name and name of because remember
- 15:31Speaker 1: when remember when it was Steven Skip and everybody was like,
- 15:33Speaker 1: what's gonna happen Skips leaving the Fox? I'll take Shannon
- 15:37Speaker 1: over and and and skip over over the old first
- 15:40Speaker 1: take any day, man. I mean, I like, I like
- 15:43Speaker 1: what Steven A. Smith does. And you know, obviously I'm
- 15:45Speaker 1: at ESPN, so I got a lot of but but
- 15:48Speaker 1: just just straight if I'm talking like straight, like if
- 15:51Speaker 1: I'm a them two right there together, that they're dynamic.
- 15:56Speaker 1: It's been gold yeah, you know for a while. But
- 15:58Speaker 1: like I said, I just I think he see Shannon
- 16:00Speaker 1: sees it, the world sees it like Skip is just
- 16:03Speaker 1: really really feeling himself on a disrespectful tip of late
- 16:07Speaker 1: and just I just don't think people are going to
- 16:09Speaker 1: continue to put up with that. So now you were
- 16:12Speaker 1: a part of The Jump, which was one of my
- 16:15Speaker 1: favorite NBA shows of the I mean probably since I've
- 16:19Speaker 1: been an adult, because it reminds me of like it
- 16:22Speaker 1: just reminded me like when I was a kid, there
- 16:24Speaker 1: was like dope NBA shows like Inside Stuff and you know, different.
- 16:28Speaker 1: It didn't feel like a generic NBA show. And obviously, uh,
- 16:33Speaker 1: you know, you guys brought Rachel over to Showtime Sports,
- 16:36Speaker 1: which is where you guys have your podcast. You had
- 16:39Speaker 1: her on the show. You guys had her back. What
- 16:41Speaker 1: that was going through that situation and kind of seeing
- 16:44Speaker 1: your friend go through a situation which you know, the
- 16:46Speaker 1: cancel culture shit kind of rears its head and their
- 16:50Speaker 1: context gets thrown out the window. Nuance gets thrown out
- 16:52Speaker 1: the window. Yeah, I mean, it's it's just unfortunate because
- 16:56Speaker 1: you know, you you're you're in the business in the business.
- 16:59Speaker 1: It's a dirty business, you know what I mean, And
- 17:02Speaker 1: when you kind of know, when you find out what happened,
- 17:07Speaker 1: it's just like oh ship, damn, you know, and and
- 17:09Speaker 1: then there's proof of that's how it happened, but it
- 17:11Speaker 1: still got played out a whole nother way, just like damn.
- 17:15Speaker 1: That's you know, it's it's a cold game. But you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: for any of you guys, go check out that Rachel
- 17:19Speaker 1: Nichols episode on All the Smoke on Showtime YouTube and
- 17:23Speaker 1: it'll just kind of show you, well, you guys cut
- 17:26Speaker 1: a lot out too, Am I wrong? Because it was
- 17:27Speaker 1: kind of short? Yeah, no, it was. It was you know,
- 17:30Speaker 1: it was crazy because you know, obviously you know my
- 17:33Speaker 1: thing is, you know, I'm also employed by You're on
- 17:35Speaker 1: both sides. I mean, so I'm mumbo. So it's not
- 17:37Speaker 1: like I'm ever going to play a corporate type role.
- 17:40Speaker 1: But if it's just like I can't show that I'm
- 17:44Speaker 1: like on like hosting, I can't let you just throw dirt,
- 17:49Speaker 1: yeah yeah, because that makes it reflection on me. So
- 17:53Speaker 1: I'm you know, I'm gonna keep business, but I'm also
- 17:54Speaker 1: gonna keep it real. And I had a lot of
- 17:55Speaker 1: love for Rachel, you know what I mean. But you
- 17:57Speaker 1: know what was crazy was I had to talk to
- 17:59Speaker 1: some ESP people after that, and it wasn't nothing like crazy.
- 18:03Speaker 1: It was just more you know, kind of give us
- 18:04Speaker 1: a heads up. But I felt like, you know, if
- 18:06Speaker 1: if if Rachel's truth, if her telling her truth on
- 18:09Speaker 1: my show was going to cost me my job, there,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I would have took that right because that's how to me,
- 18:13Speaker 1: how dope she was, how opening she was, how how
- 18:16Speaker 1: important and instrumental she was to me and stacked in particular,
- 18:18Speaker 1: But guys like t mac paul, all these people like
- 18:22Speaker 1: she really kind of just really showed us the ropes
- 18:24Speaker 1: on that on that jump show, you know what I mean.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So once I found out like what really happened, was
- 18:28Speaker 1: just like damn, this is this is sticky. But at
- 18:30Speaker 1: the same time, like I feel like I got to
- 18:32Speaker 1: let my sister talk and if it's going to cost
- 18:33Speaker 1: me much was dope, which was dope because a lot
- 18:35Speaker 1: of people wouldn't do that. Yeah, if it's going to
- 18:37Speaker 1: cost me my job, it's going to cost me my job.
- 18:39Speaker 1: But you know, to me, her truth is important because
- 18:41Speaker 1: she's a good person, you know what I mean. So
- 18:42Speaker 1: we're definitely happy to have her over at you know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: Showtime now, which is dope. You know, we're continuing to
- 18:48Speaker 1: build a beautiful little ecosystem over there with her, Kevin Garnett,
- 18:52Speaker 1: Paul Pierce, you know myself, Stack. You know, we got
- 18:56Speaker 1: guys coming in and out. So we got t Max,
- 18:58Speaker 1: so we got AI. We got a lot of cool
- 19:01Speaker 1: little like I said, like if if if if uh
- 19:06Speaker 1: companies played like pickup games with like talent, our ship
- 19:09Speaker 1: would be over like we got. Yeah, you guys got
- 19:11Speaker 1: all these Hall of favors. It would be crazy if
- 19:14Speaker 1: you guys actually got like, yeah, let's run run vershow
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm playing the show Time so ESPN, you know Verse,
- 19:20Speaker 1: Showtime or Fox or whatever it was. So you know,
- 19:23Speaker 1: Perko average five points a game for ESPN money. You know,
- 19:26Speaker 1: if per can get up and down the court, big fellow,
- 19:28Speaker 1: you know what I I mean. He just tore his squad
- 19:30Speaker 1: from slipping and everything, so he's he's getting healed up.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I don't know if Perk got any any any points
- 19:34Speaker 1: in them, yo. What we got to stop the interview
- 19:36Speaker 1: real quick to tell you about our family over at
- 19:38Speaker 1: my bookie. That's right, lots going on in basketball, right, now,
- 19:41Speaker 1: lots going on in the NFL playoffs are about to start,

- 20:41Speaker 1: an account. Let's get back to the interview. Yo. Let
- 20:44Speaker 1: me ask you this working with Paul Pierce when he
- 20:48Speaker 1: went live, because I was watching that shit would he
- 20:50Speaker 1: went live? And it was it was amazing, It was
- 20:54Speaker 1: it was amazing because I was like, because I remember
- 20:58Speaker 1: like being like twenty one twenty two DJ and Scott Steale.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Paul Pierce would always be at the club, having himself
- 21:03Speaker 1: a good time, great guy, like but I remember is
- 21:07Speaker 1: great energy, great energy. But I just remember seeing that
- 21:10Speaker 1: ship and being like this is the This feels like
- 21:14Speaker 1: if the Boondogs was on right now, they they would
- 21:17Speaker 1: somehow parody Paul Pierce being at like being at a
- 21:21Speaker 1: house party with strippers. All has fun, all has fun,
- 21:25Speaker 1: you know, but it's just like it takes us back
- 21:27Speaker 1: obviously it doesn't get more Disney, you know what I mean.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Like Disney is under you know, ESPN is of the
- 21:34Speaker 1: Disney umbrella, so we always kind of have to be
- 21:36Speaker 1: mindful of mindful of it, you know what I mean.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And although you know it was just I think I
- 21:42Speaker 1: just think it was just a lot at once. It
- 21:44Speaker 1: was so you know what I mean, Because I've had
- 21:45Speaker 1: conversations when I've renegotiated my deal with ESPN talking about
- 21:48Speaker 1: you know, I'm a cannabis advocate, I have a company
- 21:50Speaker 1: of the company shout to seven Leaves, thank you, shout
- 21:52Speaker 1: out seven Leagus. Sometimes I'm on you know, my my
- 21:55Speaker 1: Instagram smoking. But I'm also a coach of father all
- 21:58Speaker 1: this kind of strang I mean, so I'm a bit is.
- 22:00Speaker 1: It's a business to me, you know what I mean.
- 22:02Speaker 1: So I've had to have those conversations, but it was
- 22:04Speaker 1: just like Paul, shit was just like a perfect storm,
- 22:07Speaker 1: I guess. So, yeah, a lot of different things and unfortunately, man,
- 22:11Speaker 1: it didn't end well. It's crazy because like back in
- 22:14Speaker 1: the day when you were playing, obviously they would be
- 22:17Speaker 1: testing for weed, right, so like marijuana was frowned upon
- 22:20Speaker 1: in the league. And what were what were you actively smoking? Yeah, man,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I smoke my whole sauce. I started smoking, uh like
- 22:30Speaker 1: eighth grade to ninth grade summer, So that was your
- 22:33Speaker 1: starting point. You smoked throughout the whole your whole concent
- 22:36Speaker 1: So what were ways you were dodging the tests. So
- 22:39Speaker 1: when I first got in the league, like they used
- 22:41Speaker 1: to do one team drug test in the preseason, so
- 22:44Speaker 1: they would test everybody in one day. It was what
- 22:47Speaker 1: it was. Everyone knew to you know, stay clean for
- 22:49Speaker 1: that test and then you could you know, motherfuckers had
- 22:51Speaker 1: blunts or joints in the car since we got down
- 22:53Speaker 1: with practice. It's amazing. But then it you know, it started,
- 22:56Speaker 1: it went to four random so it was just like
- 22:58Speaker 1: a real job to stay So I would always stay up,
- 23:01Speaker 1: like maybe every six to eight months, I would stock
- 23:04Speaker 1: up on these. I'd go to go to I can
- 23:06Speaker 1: say it now because it's not legal, So I go
- 23:08Speaker 1: to G and C and I just tell them like yo,
- 23:10Speaker 1: and they'd always recognize it, like what's the best drink
- 23:13Speaker 1: to clean out you know the detox stuff? Yeah, yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 1: and they would. I would be up front with them,
- 23:17Speaker 1: and it was never shipped. It was out whatever we
- 23:19Speaker 1: could see here. No, my cousins are on probation. You
- 23:21Speaker 1: used to always have to go and get that ship
- 23:23Speaker 1: and then drink a bunch of it. So it was
- 23:24Speaker 1: always underneath the counter. So like my test day, So
- 23:26Speaker 1: I used to pay my trainers a little bit of
- 23:29Speaker 1: bread to just kind of give me a heads up,
- 23:31Speaker 1: like hey, uh, you know, because at first they would
- 23:34Speaker 1: say the names, so we would really know who's coming,
- 23:37Speaker 1: you know, but later they just it was when they
- 23:40Speaker 1: were coming. They wouldn't say who was getting tested until
- 23:43Speaker 1: you got there. So every time I got that morning call,
- 23:45Speaker 1: which everyone would get the morning call, like hey, drug
- 23:47Speaker 1: test today, you know, be ready name, you get the
- 23:49Speaker 1: names and you get here, I had to prepare like
- 23:50Speaker 1: as if it was me. So even though it wasn't me,
- 23:54Speaker 1: every time I had to prepare, and that shit is tough,
- 23:56Speaker 1: Like you had to wake up hella early, drink this
- 23:59Speaker 1: whole little thing and it's nasty as fuck, and then
- 24:02Speaker 1: drink like three or four waters and just keep paying
- 24:05Speaker 1: like you had to pee like three, four or five times.
- 24:07Speaker 1: And then once you pee that much like you're your
- 24:11Speaker 1: ship is a kind of a it's clear, like you
- 24:16Speaker 1: have a window of like how long it's you know,
- 24:18Speaker 1: your pee is clear, like six to eight hours. It's crazy.
- 24:21Speaker 1: It's crazy because like I never thought as a kid,
- 24:23Speaker 1: you'd see the day were like an active NBA player
- 24:25Speaker 1: like KD. Right, it's like involved in a marijuana company.
- 24:28Speaker 1: That's what I said, I, you know, like a lot
- 24:29Speaker 1: of people took a lot of chances. You know, I
- 24:31Speaker 1: got caught twice. You get caught three times, you're suspended
- 24:34Speaker 1: for five games and everyone knows about it. So I
- 24:36Speaker 1: got caught twice in my fifteen years. And but also
- 24:40Speaker 1: like you're allowed to admit yourself to the program as
- 24:42Speaker 1: well if you know you're gonna fail. One time, I
- 24:43Speaker 1: didn't have my drink and they got me. I was
- 24:45Speaker 1: just I was slipping. So I called the dudes right there, like, yo,
- 24:49Speaker 1: I'm about to get tested and I know I'm gonna fail,
- 24:51Speaker 1: and they will. They allow you to come into the
- 24:53Speaker 1: rehab program. And you gotta think about all the money
- 24:56Speaker 1: the NBA took from people back then, people's careers. The
- 25:00Speaker 1: on the flip side, they'll you know, they'll shoot us
- 25:02Speaker 1: with tour it all. They'll give us any kind of
- 25:03Speaker 1: painkiller we can ask for, as much as we need.
- 25:06Speaker 1: And I'm sure football is even worse. And it's just
- 25:08Speaker 1: like they want to pump us full of that, but
- 25:11Speaker 1: not the actual anti inflammatories that aren't addicted. They want
- 25:14Speaker 1: to find us and suspend us. And some people who
- 25:16Speaker 1: lose their career, you know, over something that that can
- 25:18Speaker 1: help us now that something that's legal now as well. Yeah,
- 25:22Speaker 1: because if you think about the downside of any painkiller,
- 25:25Speaker 1: it's it's masking one thing and causing problems in another area,
- 25:30Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So it's just that temporary
- 25:33Speaker 1: get you back out their relief that they need to
- 25:35Speaker 1: make money. When you look at like, because we always
- 25:38Speaker 1: hear that the I mean, you obviously played not too
- 25:41Speaker 1: long ago, five years ago, right, what twenty seventeen was
- 25:44Speaker 1: your last year? Was that the year you want to
- 25:45Speaker 1: ring with the Warriors? Right? Yeah? And we hear about you.
- 25:50Speaker 1: You kind of played through a whole era then then
- 25:53Speaker 1: kind of you know, I feel like twenty thirteen fourteen
- 25:56Speaker 1: is when the NBA really started to go heavily towards
- 25:58Speaker 1: the three. But who's somebody who gives you, like when
- 26:05Speaker 1: you came into the league energy, Like just someone who's tough,
- 26:09Speaker 1: someone who's playing right now, Who's I just like guys
- 26:14Speaker 1: to play hard because I think obviously the game has
- 26:16Speaker 1: changed so much that like the game is continuing to grow,
- 26:19Speaker 1: and it's because it's it's more offensive, you know what
- 26:22Speaker 1: I mean, Like you know, seventy eight to eighty two,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I mean the Thunder put up one fifty last night
- 26:26Speaker 1: against the Celtics. I mean, these low defensive, grinding games
- 26:30Speaker 1: they used to get don't sell. You know, people when
- 26:31Speaker 1: they want they turn on TV or they watch it
- 26:34Speaker 1: on their phone. They want to see dunks, they want
- 26:35Speaker 1: to see threes from having on. Can you imagine that
- 26:38Speaker 1: the Spurs and Pistons were in the finals in twenty
- 26:40Speaker 1: twenty one, people would kill themselves. It wouldn't work. So
- 26:44Speaker 1: I say all that to say, there's like, it's kind
- 26:46Speaker 1: of like the guys that played like me are kind
- 26:48Speaker 1: of like the last of a dying breeze, you know
- 26:50Speaker 1: what I mean, the three and D someone in forcers, tough,
- 26:55Speaker 1: you know, glue guys. You know, guys like Pat Bev,
- 26:59Speaker 1: guys like PJ tuckerj Yeah, I mean we talked about
- 27:03Speaker 1: Jay Crowder. Jay Crowder, you know, Jay crowds in a
- 27:06Speaker 1: similar role like great guy, like great locker room guy,
- 27:09Speaker 1: great guy O g Vett. So the game kind of
- 27:14Speaker 1: has has changed. So I mean, but to me, I'm
- 27:16Speaker 1: not one of those guys like, oh man, they don't
- 27:18Speaker 1: play defense or not, like I appreciate what it is,
- 27:21Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like these fucking kids are
- 27:22Speaker 1: so talented. Man, these kids are super skilled, talented, athletic
- 27:27Speaker 1: as can be, and they're just you know, they're they're
- 27:29Speaker 1: they're in their way, they're taking games to the new level.
- 27:31Speaker 1: So I love it when I always because I'm I mean,
- 27:34Speaker 1: I grew up a Jordan fan. I obviously was a
- 27:38Speaker 1: Suns fan, but I put my I love Jordan more
- 27:41Speaker 1: than I love the Sons as a kid, but I
- 27:44Speaker 1: am kind of on the Lebron side of the goat convo.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I'm not mad at that, and that's just because I
- 27:51Speaker 1: look at who he played in the finals. I feel
- 27:54Speaker 1: like he went up against the Warriors all those years,
- 27:57Speaker 1: he went up against the dynasty of Spurs through Detroit.
- 28:02Speaker 1: He had to go through Detroit, who just want to
- 28:04Speaker 1: ring to get to the finals. Boston, he had to
- 28:07Speaker 1: go through Boston. I think I think we also got
- 28:09Speaker 1: to think about, like, you know, who he was, who
- 28:13Speaker 1: he had on that Cavaliers team in O five when
- 28:15Speaker 1: when they went to the was it O seven? Also?
- 28:18Speaker 1: Was it all seven or O five when they went
- 28:19Speaker 1: to the finals it was against the Spurs. But you know,
- 28:23Speaker 1: I think that like he went went through the thunder
- 28:26Speaker 1: with Katie Russ and James Harden, I'm not man. I
- 28:29Speaker 1: to me. I just think that the league's talent pool
- 28:33Speaker 1: is so much more higher than it was when Jordan
- 28:36Speaker 1: and and of course Jordan had to go through the
- 28:38Speaker 1: Pistons and and and you know there was Larry Bird
- 28:40Speaker 1: and Magic Johnson and those guys. But I just think
- 28:42Speaker 1: the talent pool, like if I I love watching every
- 28:44Speaker 1: team right now, I have lead pass, there's not a
- 28:46Speaker 1: team that I'm not interested in because they got a
- 28:49Speaker 1: couple of guys that can go. Yeah, I'm like, oh
- 28:51Speaker 1: the Pistons around, well, Kate Cunningham's out, but I'm like, oh,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I want to see Ivy, I want to see uh Bay.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Like there's like no, I definitely get it. And when
- 29:00Speaker 1: when I was a kid, like the Clippers like sucked,
- 29:04Speaker 1: like they really sucked. But even the teams that aren't
- 29:06Speaker 1: good are still fun to watch and have good foot.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Right now, it's crazy, it's crazy. I mean yeah, So
- 29:12Speaker 1: what was the question that I was going to say, Like,
- 29:14Speaker 1: do you feel like the talent because you you played
- 29:16Speaker 1: through so many, like fifteen years, do you feel like
- 29:19Speaker 1: the talent pool nowadays is just off the charts deeper
- 29:23Speaker 1: than it's ever been or is that just recency bias
- 29:25Speaker 1: because we're watching basketball. I think the I think the
- 29:30Speaker 1: skill level might be as high as we've ever seen it.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Uh talent. You know, you think back to the you know,
- 29:39Speaker 1: late eighties and early nineties and then I don't even
- 29:41Speaker 1: want to disrespect no Air because every year I had talent.
- 29:43Speaker 1: But yeah, I'm thinking, like you know, young Mike in
- 29:46Speaker 1: that in that era, there was there was a lot
- 29:48Speaker 1: of motherfuckers in that era. But I think often, you know,
- 29:51Speaker 1: we just we're kind of prisoners of of now and
- 29:54Speaker 1: what we've seen of like you know what I mean.
- 29:56Speaker 1: So obviously there's a lot of talent on on both sides,
- 29:59Speaker 1: but I feel like the skill level, the athleticism, all
- 30:03Speaker 1: this shit is just it's it's it's continues to grow.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I think like back in the day, like the Cavaliers
- 30:09Speaker 1: were like a big deal for the Bulls to go
- 30:11Speaker 1: against with Craig Elo and Brad Daughtry or whatever the
- 30:15Speaker 1: fuck his name was. I used to play with them
- 30:16Speaker 1: one NBA jam when I was But I'm like, none
- 30:20Speaker 1: of the like, none of like nobody's gonna be Like
- 30:23Speaker 1: both of those guys are all time greats. Nobody's saying.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I mean, they were good at the time, but I
- 30:28Speaker 1: think now and I'm just like, yo, Like if you
- 30:31Speaker 1: look at all three of the All NBA teams every year,
- 30:34Speaker 1: it's like fuck, like the fact like Katie can get
- 30:37Speaker 1: left off because he was injured. It's just like the
- 30:41Speaker 1: fact Damian Lillard is like not in the top ten
- 30:44Speaker 1: right now. I think the game is just continued to evolve. Yeah,
- 30:48Speaker 1: because DA looks like an all time great point guard,
- 30:50Speaker 1: no question, no question. But back to my original point, like,
- 30:54Speaker 1: I don't any like to me, it's it's it's MJ.
- 30:58Speaker 1: And there's no odor. But in the these three, I
- 31:01Speaker 1: can live with arguments for either of them, MJ, Cobe
- 31:04Speaker 1: and Mike as far as to me, those are the
- 31:07Speaker 1: you said, MJ Cob and Mike Cob and Lebron excuse me,
- 31:10Speaker 1: MJ Cob and Lebron. Like to me, I can see
- 31:13Speaker 1: Jordan being one. I can see some people have Cob
- 31:16Speaker 1: number one, some people have Lebron number one. You know,
- 31:18Speaker 1: I could see to me, those three guys are with
- 31:23Speaker 1: all due respect everyone else at the top of the pyramid.
- 31:27Speaker 1: You know, you hear guys like you know and you
- 31:30Speaker 1: never want to disrespect legends or people that come before you.
- 31:34Speaker 1: But I just feel like some of those older older players,
- 31:37Speaker 1: like when you talk about the top seventy five lists,
- 31:38Speaker 1: those older players that were like foundational for the league
- 31:42Speaker 1: and and and yeah, like almost like the meaning to
- 31:45Speaker 1: the league outweighs their actual talent. Yeah. I mean, to me, like,
- 31:48Speaker 1: there's no way you can leave a Dwight Howard or
- 31:50Speaker 1: Vince Carter or Tracy mcgree the Dwight. The Dwight thing's crazy. Yeah,
- 31:54Speaker 1: sure he was the most he was the best center
- 31:55Speaker 1: for ten years. Yeah. So it's just like there's so
- 31:57Speaker 1: much stuff that you know to me because like you said,
- 32:00Speaker 1: the town level was so much on a night to
- 32:02Speaker 1: night basis better than it was, you know back in
- 32:05Speaker 1: the fifties, sixties, you know, coming into the seventies, it
- 32:08Speaker 1: was just like a lot of these current guys that
- 32:10Speaker 1: got left off. You look at it, it's just like, no,
- 32:12Speaker 1: those guys really weren't better than these guys are left
- 32:15Speaker 1: off with even close. Yo, you had a full circle
- 32:18Speaker 1: moment winning a ring and ending your career with the Warriors,
- 32:22Speaker 1: obviously being a part of the We Believe run. Was
- 32:26Speaker 1: I mean that shit? I know, you guys didn't get
- 32:30Speaker 1: out of the second round, but getting out of that
- 32:32Speaker 1: first round against Dirk and the Mavericks was so crazy
- 32:36Speaker 1: and that team was just so much fun to watch.
- 32:38Speaker 1: But can you take me to that championship run. I know,
- 32:41Speaker 1: you know at that point you were a veteran on
- 32:43Speaker 1: the team. But how high was the animosity between the
- 32:50Speaker 1: Warriors and the Cavaliers Because I had Emon on and
- 32:52Speaker 1: he said it was He's like that shit was up
- 32:54Speaker 1: for real. He's like the group chats were active, we were.
- 32:57Speaker 1: It just felt like it was because you know, they
- 33:00Speaker 1: had gone to battle several times, you know, four, you
- 33:03Speaker 1: know what I mean. And then you know Cleveland got one.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I think at the twenty the Lawyers had had two
- 33:10Speaker 1: for the two or three maybe two was the third
- 33:14Speaker 1: and one one more. So it was intense, you know,
- 33:18Speaker 1: for me personally, you know, it was crazy because so
- 33:21Speaker 1: I leave, I sign a you know, three year deal
- 33:25Speaker 1: with Sacramento thinking that all right, you know, just finish.
- 33:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna go finishing, finish up at home. We got
- 33:31Speaker 1: a new arena, maybe make the playoffs and you know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: you know, get ready for my transition. So I wasn't
- 33:37Speaker 1: triven with that, and so then the King's trade DeMarcus
- 33:40Speaker 1: Cousins at the at during the All Star break, like
- 33:43Speaker 1: while he's down the podium the Pelicans. Yeah, he gets told,
- 33:46Speaker 1: he gets traded. So you know, we're to the point
- 33:48Speaker 1: where they're trying to go younger. You know, I'm talking
- 33:51Speaker 1: to management like I'm too old to try to rebuild, like,
- 33:54Speaker 1: you know, help me out. Yeah, let me get up
- 33:56Speaker 1: out of here, you know what I mean. And they
- 33:57Speaker 1: were on the same vibe, so yeah, release from there,
- 34:00Speaker 1: but they still had to pay me, uh, you know,
- 34:02Speaker 1: the rest of my contract because guaranteed. And then really
- 34:06Speaker 1: literally simultaneously when that happened, kd gets hurt for Golden
- 34:09Speaker 1: State when they're in DC, hyper extends his knee. So
- 34:13Speaker 1: you know, I get a call from their team to
- 34:15Speaker 1: you know, Kti's down. You know, we're gonna need you
- 34:18Speaker 1: to come out. I was like, shit, easy call, you
- 34:20Speaker 1: know what I mean. Not too far from home, nah,
- 34:23Speaker 1: you know, So I went out there. You know the
- 34:26Speaker 1: first night, you know, I played like twenty twenty five minutes.
- 34:29Speaker 1: So it was dope because it was just like I've
- 34:31Speaker 1: never played on a team that had so many starts.
- 34:33Speaker 1: But it was just selfless, Like going to work every
- 34:34Speaker 1: day was dope. The energy in the weight room after
- 34:37Speaker 1: everything was just damn, I see why you motherfuckers be
- 34:40Speaker 1: winning all this shit, Like it's fun to be here,
- 34:42Speaker 1: you know, like Ego lists basketball dope, so it's crazy.
- 34:45Speaker 1: No I go out there playing. I'm playing anywhere, you know,
- 34:48Speaker 1: twenty twenty two to twenty four minutes a game. In
- 34:51Speaker 1: the very first game KD comes back is about a
- 34:53Speaker 1: week before the playoffs, or maybe week to ten days
- 34:55Speaker 1: before the playoffs, and the game he comes back, I
- 34:58Speaker 1: sprained my ankle and nearly break the worst sprain of
- 35:00Speaker 1: my fucking career, and I was out. I kept trying
- 35:04Speaker 1: to come back, and it just I wasn't ready, And
- 35:06Speaker 1: by the time I felt halfway decent, I'm just like, damn,
- 35:08Speaker 1: I want to try because it's you know, we're heading
- 35:10Speaker 1: to the finals, like it was a Western Conference finals,
- 35:12Speaker 1: like we're already eight and oh so as a vet,
- 35:15Speaker 1: I knew I wasn't. You know, you don't a role
- 35:17Speaker 1: player is not going to really able to jump in,
- 35:19Speaker 1: and you know, if you're a start coming back into
- 35:21Speaker 1: different story. So I just kind of had to, you know,
- 35:24Speaker 1: stay in shape, just in case it needed me stay ready,
- 35:26Speaker 1: and then you know, talk to guys when I saw stuff,
- 35:28Speaker 1: you know what I mean, even though you know I
- 35:29Speaker 1: was new there, those guys like again that you know,
- 35:31Speaker 1: they respected, you know, my body of work and how
- 35:33Speaker 1: hard I played. So I wasn't someone who was overstepping
- 35:35Speaker 1: my bounds. But there'd be times where at any time,
- 35:38Speaker 1: you know, that's the thing. Cool thing about it, where
- 35:40Speaker 1: I having that conversation with Draymond, had you know, long
- 35:42Speaker 1: conversations with Clay, you know, me and Kadi used to
- 35:45Speaker 1: get down after games, you know, burn a few and
- 35:48Speaker 1: just talk about the game, you know what I mean.
- 35:49Speaker 1: So it was just like that kind of og positivity
- 35:54Speaker 1: and ways to look at things. And and that team
- 35:58Speaker 1: ended up winning championship, you know what I mean. But yeah,
- 36:01Speaker 1: they man handled the Cavaliers that year, that's for sure. Yeah. No,
- 36:04Speaker 1: that that was even though those teams were chicos. You
- 36:07Speaker 1: I mean, once Katie got healthy and Steph and play
- 36:10Speaker 1: and Pray and Iggy and I just don't like, like,
- 36:13Speaker 1: if Katie would have just stayed on the Warriors, who
- 36:15Speaker 1: knows how many more rings, I mean, it would have
- 36:17Speaker 1: been ugly. I was so I was actually very happy
- 36:19Speaker 1: that he left because I felt like the balance of
- 36:21Speaker 1: power readjusted in the league. For a couple of years,
- 36:24Speaker 1: it was more about duos and not trios anymore. So
- 36:27Speaker 1: it was like, I like the way it is now.
- 36:29Speaker 1: There's parody in the Western Conference specifically, there's so much. Ye,
- 36:33Speaker 1: there's just so much. I just mean, like if you
- 36:35Speaker 1: look at like the Sons are the eight seed right now,
- 36:37Speaker 1: but they're four and a half games behind the one seed.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, you can make a five game win,
- 36:41Speaker 1: seven game winning streak and you know, jump up four spots,
- 36:44Speaker 1: so you can go in a three or four game
- 36:45Speaker 1: lose the streak and slide down three or four spots.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Like the West is super tight, so it's dope. Hey,
- 36:52Speaker 1: what ups bout leg cav here to stop the interview
- 36:54Speaker 1: and tell you about bluech You, yes, do you have
- 36:57Speaker 1: a dick? Does your husband have a dick? Maybe? Does

- 37:08Speaker 1: blue Choo will get your dick real hard to kick

- 38:37Speaker 1: a you know, a victim of too much stress, too

- 38:42Speaker 1: stay hard. You imagine how fucking embarrassing that is. You
- 38:46Speaker 1: get yourself a nice, lovely, fucking young lady, you bring
- 38:49Speaker 1: it to the place you're nervous, she's a little maybe
- 38:51Speaker 1: she's a little out of your fucking league, and you
- 38:54Speaker 1: start thinking too much and that dick's not gonna perform.
- 38:57Speaker 1: It's not it's not gonna perform how you'd like it,
- 39:00Speaker 1: but you know how it will perform. You're on that
- 39:03Speaker 1: fucking blue Choo. You're gonna put in a fucking luka
- 39:06Speaker 1: donkic sixty one point fucking performance on that pussy all right,
- 39:11Speaker 1: So go to blue choo dot com right now, use
- 39:13Speaker 1: that promo code Bootleg. Let's get back to the interview.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Let me ask you this I've seen because this year
- 39:21Speaker 1: it seems like there's like a rule right where you
- 39:23Speaker 1: really can't go back to back to back MVP. It's
- 39:28Speaker 1: barely ever happened. I don't I can't remember when it's
- 39:30Speaker 1: happened unless Larry Bird got three, and I think there
- 39:34Speaker 1: was a there was an argument to be made that
- 39:36Speaker 1: Harden could have got it again. There's an argument if
- 39:38Speaker 1: Giannis could have got it last year, the year before
- 39:40Speaker 1: or whatever. A lot of people are saying, Jokic motherfucker man,
- 39:44Speaker 1: yeah man, and he's built like me, so like right now,
- 39:48Speaker 1: we have these two white dudes that are kind of
- 39:50Speaker 1: just like kind of like normally built, like flabby white
- 39:55Speaker 1: dudes who are like, it's just kind of crazy, Like, yeah,
- 39:59Speaker 1: I don't even you know. I saw Bill Simmons talking
- 40:01Speaker 1: about Jokic and he said that he's the funnest player
- 40:06Speaker 1: since Larry Bird some shit, he said. Some shit. A
- 40:07Speaker 1: lot of people are pissed off about. But like you
- 40:10Speaker 1: do this for a living, you analyze the game, like
- 40:12Speaker 1: how special is Jokic and how special is the Now.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I know how special Luca is because we should have
- 40:18Speaker 1: drafted him over DeAndre Ayden and I came sick to
- 40:21Speaker 1: my stomach every time, But like, how special are these
- 40:25Speaker 1: two uh, white Caucasian unicorns in the league? Right now.
- 40:29Speaker 1: It's fucking crazy. They're incredible each. I mean obviously Jokic first,
- 40:33Speaker 1: you know his ability to do it all from his size,
- 40:36Speaker 1: you know, his length, his basketball a Q. I mean,
- 40:39Speaker 1: there's no holes. There's no holes in his game. I
- 40:43Speaker 1: mean he's okay defensively, yeah, I mean yeah, in a
- 40:46Speaker 1: league where defense doesn't really matter. There's no holds what
- 40:48Speaker 1: I mean. So to me, there's no real holes in
- 40:51Speaker 1: his offensive game. And then Luca. I think Luca's gonna
- 40:55Speaker 1: go down as an all time great me too, man,
- 40:57Speaker 1: I mean, he's only twenty three years old. The numbers,
- 41:00Speaker 1: the video game numbers in year four, I'm like, if
- 41:03Speaker 1: you go year four like one through four, maybe Wilts
- 41:06Speaker 1: can hang with him. They showed a comparison of him
- 41:08Speaker 1: and Lebron after like a certain amount of games, maybe
- 41:10Speaker 1: a month ago, at a certain amount of games. We
- 41:14Speaker 1: want to say, how many games, I don't remember, but
- 41:16Speaker 1: Luca was like two points better to a couple of
- 41:18Speaker 1: rebounds better. And it'sist better than Labron, you know, through
- 41:21Speaker 1: that same span. So uh, and it's scary because Luca's
- 41:24Speaker 1: only twenty three, you know what I mean. We literally
- 41:26Speaker 1: just talked about this shit. On ESPN today, Like guys
- 41:28Speaker 1: don't really kind of hit their peak into twenty eight,
- 41:33Speaker 1: nine thirty. You know, Lucas motherfucking he ain't even get
- 41:37Speaker 1: it shape yet. That's what's crazy. It's like a batch
- 41:39Speaker 1: it if he wants to get He's in better shift
- 41:41Speaker 1: he was last year. Yeah, he's in better shape than
- 41:43Speaker 1: he was, so, I mean he's learning the game. But
- 41:45Speaker 1: it's I don't think we've ever seen someone so offensively
- 41:52Speaker 1: what's the word brilliant? I mean, from the amazing passes
- 41:57Speaker 1: he makes to how he can score from every single
- 42:00Speaker 1: he's a dog too. He's big. Yeah, he's bigger than
- 42:03Speaker 1: he's bigger than me. He got that fucking attitude. Yeah,
- 42:05Speaker 1: because he's seen it. I mean he's at thirteen, Luca
- 42:08Speaker 1: was playing basketball. What motherfuckers was drinking beers and smoking
- 42:11Speaker 1: cigarettes at halftime, you know what I mean? Like Luca
- 42:13Speaker 1: Benner pro since he was in seventh like for like
- 42:15Speaker 1: my kids in eighth grade, like losing Benner prosins he
- 42:18Speaker 1: was in seventy you know, technically seven. You know, I
- 42:20Speaker 1: just saw I just saw a picture of him and
- 42:21Speaker 1: Russell Westbrook from like twenty seventeen when he was like
- 42:24Speaker 1: a kid. Yeah, yeah, he's been thrown in the fire.
- 42:27Speaker 1: So he was built for I mean he was built
- 42:30Speaker 1: for this. Talk about growing up in Sacramento. Sacramento, I
- 42:35Speaker 1: feel like finally has had like a lot of dope,
- 42:38Speaker 1: big uh recognition in the hip hop world with my
- 42:42Speaker 1: guy Mazzi Free Mazzie. But then you know, growing up
- 42:48Speaker 1: there was like brother Lynch Hung and Cibo and and
- 42:54Speaker 1: I used to listen to a lot of even though
- 42:55Speaker 1: they're not from master P in high school. Yeah, Sacramento
- 42:59Speaker 1: is like one of those that is like super active,
- 43:02Speaker 1: like surprise you. It's a very active place because when
- 43:05Speaker 1: you fly in, all you see is like fields. So
- 43:07Speaker 1: people like this motherfucking caws and then you know that
- 43:09Speaker 1: the fans go crazy with their low cowbo. So there's
- 43:11Speaker 1: a real misconception that Sack Sacks got a lot of
- 43:14Speaker 1: smoke out there. It definitely does a lot of smiling,
- 43:17Speaker 1: and it's not anything to brag about, like it's really dangerous. Yeah,
- 43:20Speaker 1: between like Stockton and Sacramento, it's a there's bodies, bodies
- 43:24Speaker 1: are dropping, Yeah dude, I mean so it's just like
- 43:27Speaker 1: it's it's you know, Sacramento is different. You know, Luckily
- 43:32Speaker 1: coming from you know, the Bay area. Uh, my parents
- 43:34Speaker 1: were able to put some you know money together to
- 43:37Speaker 1: not necessarily get us, to get us in a in
- 43:39Speaker 1: a better area, right, you know, like my cousins and
- 43:42Speaker 1: my aunt was killed in a parkat slash left and
- 43:45Speaker 1: the gutter, like my cousins that living Sack were in
- 43:48Speaker 1: like in the heart of aunt. Yeah, my little sister,
- 43:53Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So I would always so
- 43:56Speaker 1: my parents, you know, were able to do better by
- 43:58Speaker 1: the time we were able to move up to Sack.
- 44:00Speaker 1: So they would always put me in predominantly white schools.
- 44:03Speaker 1: And I never understood why. I never understood. Used to
- 44:05Speaker 1: hate it because all my neighborhood friends were mixed, like
- 44:07Speaker 1: Mexican blacks, some Asians, some white kids. But I never
- 44:11Speaker 1: got to go to school with those kids, so I
- 44:12Speaker 1: always had to go to different schools. But you know,
- 44:15Speaker 1: now getting older and finished, you know, looking back, I mean,
- 44:18Speaker 1: it's just it made me the chameleon I am because
- 44:21Speaker 1: I could. You mean, I was going to Oak Park
- 44:23Speaker 1: and all those things. You know, I grew up in
- 44:25Speaker 1: the Oak Park YMCA, you know center, and you know,
- 44:28Speaker 1: so I could be there and then I could be
- 44:30Speaker 1: and you know the nicest part of Sacramento with you know,
- 44:33Speaker 1: a bunch of white kids, you know what I mean.
- 44:35Speaker 1: So I saw so much diversity, you know, at a
- 44:39Speaker 1: younger age that it just you know, allowed me to
- 44:41Speaker 1: kind of be able to move and slide in different rooms.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Now I feel like you do. I feel like you
- 44:46Speaker 1: do a great job of that. Now. I feel like,
- 44:48Speaker 1: just like the vast, like diverse cast of people you
- 44:53Speaker 1: guys interview on your podcast, it's like, yeah, I know,
- 44:55Speaker 1: it's been growing, man, it's been fun, you know what
- 44:57Speaker 1: I mean. I remember when you guys did the Kobe interviewed.
- 45:00Speaker 1: That was one of your first was it like one
- 45:02Speaker 1: of the first five or six? It felt like it
- 45:04Speaker 1: was early number ten. Yeah, it was one of the
- 45:06Speaker 1: earlier ones. You obviously played with Kobe. What years were
- 45:10Speaker 1: you with Kobe? I was with Cobe I think the eleven,
- 45:15Speaker 1: thirteen or fourteen, so that was obviously kind of some
- 45:18Speaker 1: rough Laker years. No, well, no, so I came right
- 45:22Speaker 1: after they won to I came when they were going
- 45:23Speaker 1: for a three p so Phil's last year. So you
- 45:26Speaker 1: were there when okay, okay, so you were there kind
- 45:28Speaker 1: of like the end of like the peak. Yeah, the
- 45:30Speaker 1: run was over unfortunately. So you played with Lamar on
- 45:34Speaker 1: that team. Yeah, Lamar, Lamar pale buying him. Uh what's
- 45:39Speaker 1: the locker room like with Matt Barnes and Lamar owed
- 45:41Speaker 1: him at the same time, Funny and Test was in
- 45:44Speaker 1: that mother and run our tests. So like people don't
- 45:46Speaker 1: know Koke talk big ship, Like I was like right
- 45:50Speaker 1: when I went to team, because I'm someone that just
- 45:51Speaker 1: keeps everybody loose. I talked Matt Barnes, run our tests,
- 45:54Speaker 1: Kobe Bryant, and Lamar owed him in the same locker round. Shit, amazing.
- 45:58Speaker 1: It was fun, you know what I mean. And you
- 46:01Speaker 1: know he used to poke fun to everybody like nobody
- 46:03Speaker 1: was safe, you know, and everybody get fun poked at them,
- 46:06Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So it was those Laker
- 46:08Speaker 1: days were fun, man, really fun. Yeah, what was because
- 46:11Speaker 1: I mean, Kobe is not going on anyone's podcast A
- 46:15Speaker 1: lot of people have podcasts. Kobe didn't do a lot
- 46:17Speaker 1: of interviews, so you guys obviously had a friendship that
- 46:19Speaker 1: stuck with him and resonated with him. That was a
- 46:21Speaker 1: very tough loss for the world man's particularly La you
- 46:25Speaker 1: know obviously you know the world lost, but for La
- 46:27Speaker 1: for sure. But yea, La lost a superhero, you know
- 46:30Speaker 1: what I mean? Like LA got to watch Kobe grow,
- 46:34Speaker 1: you know, as a as a seventeen year old boy.
- 46:36Speaker 1: Come to La. What was the one thing that you
- 46:39Speaker 1: feel like people don't necessarily know about Kobe that you
- 46:44Speaker 1: know being around him as much as you were as
- 46:46Speaker 1: fun like He's not like it was funny because he
- 46:50Speaker 1: used to be on the bus and talking shit back
- 46:52Speaker 1: and forth, and he'd be talking shit, talking crazy and
- 46:55Speaker 1: everyone be busting up. And I remember one time taking
- 46:58Speaker 1: on the bus like, yea, why don't you show the
- 46:59Speaker 1: rest of the world this this side of cod Yeah,
- 47:03Speaker 1: looked up and he's like, I can't show these motherfuckers this,
- 47:06Speaker 1: you know what I mean? So COPD the one thing
- 47:07Speaker 1: like cop was cool, like talk big ship. Was there
- 47:11Speaker 1: anybody who was too sensitive for his ship talking on
- 47:13Speaker 1: the team. He used to go at Pal pretty hard.
- 47:17Speaker 1: And it wasn't the power was sensitive, but he would
- 47:19Speaker 1: just that was just why I think with his way
- 47:21Speaker 1: of pushing Palace buttons. But he used to go at Pal.
- 47:24Speaker 1: I'd be like, damn, Cope, come on, Pal, let's go
- 47:28Speaker 1: and go handle it, you know what I mean. So,
- 47:30Speaker 1: but but Cobe was one of those dudes. It was
- 47:32Speaker 1: just he He would run through a wall. So he
- 47:34Speaker 1: wants you to play as absolutely as hard as you can,
- 47:37Speaker 1: have no fear in your heart, and go to war
- 47:39Speaker 1: with him. Yeah, I feel like Cope's the kind of
- 47:41Speaker 1: guy that's like, not gonna ask anybody of anything that
- 47:44Speaker 1: he wouldn't do himself. And I think most great leaders
- 47:46Speaker 1: are like that. It's like, yeah, I ain't gonna ask
- 47:48Speaker 1: you to do nothing I'm not gonna do. When he talks,
- 47:50Speaker 1: you listen. He doesn't talk much. Used to he used
- 47:52Speaker 1: to hiss when he wanted the ball. When he started hissing,
- 47:55Speaker 1: you better give him the ball or or make it
- 47:57Speaker 1: or he's gonna you know, I mean, stare a fucking
- 47:59Speaker 1: hole through your body. But dude, just work hard, man.
- 48:02Speaker 1: His work ethic to me was second to none. You
- 48:05Speaker 1: were a part of another iconic team in La Lop
- 48:08Speaker 1: City years of the Clippers was special. I remember when
- 48:12Speaker 1: Tiger Redd Rock City. Yeah, that was we took La
- 48:17Speaker 1: by story. It was dope because obviously, you know, I'd
- 48:19Speaker 1: come literally come right from the Lakers, you know what
- 48:21Speaker 1: I mean, so to see and you were you were
- 48:23Speaker 1: a starter on that team for most of that run.
- 48:26Speaker 1: I mean you were very important. I tell people like,
- 48:29Speaker 1: I won the championship with Golden State and played with
- 48:31Speaker 1: rock Stars over there, but there's nothing in the world
- 48:33Speaker 1: like being the Laker. So when I went down the
- 48:35Speaker 1: hallway to become a Clipper, it was just, you know,
- 48:38Speaker 1: a team that historically had been just terrible got awful,
- 48:41Speaker 1: even though it's in the same building, same city. Terrible.
- 48:44Speaker 1: And they had had you know, rays of hope every
- 48:47Speaker 1: once in a while with d Miles and Q. And
- 48:48Speaker 1: then when they first came in out brand you know
- 48:51Speaker 1: the Sam Pacel Patino run they had, but Tim Thomas. Yeah,
- 48:56Speaker 1: that Lop City team just captured know the NBA by storm.
- 49:01Speaker 1: You know, we won our first the Clippers first ever
- 49:04Speaker 1: pred Division title. We were beating the breaks off the
- 49:08Speaker 1: by like record numbers, Like we were beating the Lakers
- 49:10Speaker 1: by plus thirty. Oh no, it was crazy. It was crazy,
- 49:13Speaker 1: and you guys were stacked. I mean we were d
- 49:15Speaker 1: Like my first year, I think our started lineup with CP, JJ, Kuran, Butler, Blake,
- 49:25Speaker 1: and DJ and then off the bench they had Eric Bledsoe,
- 49:28Speaker 1: Jamal Crawford, me lamar Odom, Jesus Ronnie Terry Off. No,
- 49:35Speaker 1: I'm forgetting some people like I don't even remember lamar
- 49:38Speaker 1: Odom being back on the Clippers. I don't even remember
- 49:40Speaker 1: that Grant Hill on that team. I remember Grant. I
- 49:43Speaker 1: remember Grant. I remember we were like Sports Illustrated voted
- 49:47Speaker 1: us the best bench. So they did like a big
- 49:49Speaker 1: old spread on our team, and I'm like, yeah, we
- 49:51Speaker 1: used to give our starters work in practice, like for real.
- 49:54Speaker 1: But no, that team was city was crazy. Help me
- 49:58Speaker 1: understand as a Suns fan, who has to root for
- 50:00Speaker 1: Chris Paul? He said, who has Christmas? No? I mean,
- 50:04Speaker 1: Chris Paul is one of the greatest point guards of
- 50:05Speaker 1: all time, and I was ecstatic when we got him.
- 50:07Speaker 1: But that being said, the last couple of years have
- 50:10Speaker 1: been like just the absolute biggest disappointment of my life,
- 50:14Speaker 1: of my life, all forms of my life, personal relationship, family,
- 50:21Speaker 1: the Suns. So they went to the finals, They went
- 50:23Speaker 1: to the finals, were up two oh to the Bucks,
- 50:27Speaker 1: gave that back real quick, and then they lost to
- 50:29Speaker 1: Dallas and then then we lost. We got destroyed. We
- 50:32Speaker 1: got absolutely embarrassed by the Mavericks. Shortly after, Alvarado gave
- 50:38Speaker 1: us some work in that first round series against the Pelicans.
- 50:41Speaker 1: But give me like the Chris Paul thing. Because I
- 50:45Speaker 1: have friends that are close to the son's team and
- 50:49Speaker 1: you played with them. We always hear about him and
- 50:52Speaker 1: Blake didn't necessarily get along. Like what do you think
- 50:55Speaker 1: it is about CP that seems to be it? He
- 50:59Speaker 1: cause he goes to teams and they get good right away.
- 51:02Speaker 1: I mean he took that team, the thunder team that okay,
- 51:05Speaker 1: see team that was crazy. I think Chris is a
- 51:07Speaker 1: throwback point guard from a standpoint, and he's not going
- 51:10Speaker 1: to tell you what you want to hear. He's going
- 51:11Speaker 1: to tell you what you need to hear. And I
- 51:14Speaker 1: think sometimes his delivery is off, but what he's saying
- 51:18Speaker 1: nine times out of ten is right. It's a delivery thing,
- 51:22Speaker 1: his delivery. But again, he's one of them, like you know,
- 51:25Speaker 1: not it wouldn't even be so much cussing. It would
- 51:27Speaker 1: just be like he's talking. Chris is a talker, you
- 51:30Speaker 1: know what I mean. So he's always going to kind
- 51:31Speaker 1: of tell you he's a quarterback. He's always going to
- 51:33Speaker 1: kind of tell you what he wants, what DC is,
- 51:34Speaker 1: what he needs like all that shit, and me being
- 51:38Speaker 1: you know, I'm you know, I was always older than him,
- 51:41Speaker 1: but just from a era where you can you know,
- 51:44Speaker 1: you can yell at me. I have to yell back
- 51:45Speaker 1: at you. I will, but you know I'm out here.
- 51:47Speaker 1: I'm with you, bro. And I just think the disconnect
- 51:51Speaker 1: sometimes with CP and younger players is just his delivery
- 51:54Speaker 1: because young players have been kind of so coddled in
- 51:57Speaker 1: this new era where you know, you say something wrong,
- 52:00Speaker 1: some of these motherfuckers that get you fired. Oh it's
- 52:03Speaker 1: we're in the middle of this cancel culture shit. So
- 52:06Speaker 1: it's just like, you know, these younger players have been
- 52:08Speaker 1: given so much so fast, and I say they're not talented,
- 52:10Speaker 1: They've just been given a lot fast. So it's just
- 52:12Speaker 1: like when someone who's kind of a throwback personality like
- 52:15Speaker 1: is barking at you, some motherfuckers don't like it. And
- 52:18Speaker 1: Blake Griffin wasn't a fan. Yeah, I just yeah, I
- 52:23Speaker 1: just think, yeah, I can't say they weren't. I mean
- 52:25Speaker 1: when we were on, we were on. I think I
- 52:27Speaker 1: think you guys are one of the prime examples of
- 52:30Speaker 1: like people forget the injuries that happened in your guys'
- 52:33Speaker 1: playoff runs, getting hurt, blatting, hurt, there was like just
- 52:36Speaker 1: some timely injuries that were just like again like it
- 52:40Speaker 1: almost like the basketball gods are like, no, you're the Clippers,
- 52:42Speaker 1: go fuck yourself crazy that I mean to me because
- 52:45Speaker 1: there was a year you guys beat the Spurs. Year. Yeah,
- 52:47Speaker 1: there's two there to me through those two years where
- 52:50Speaker 1: you know, we were a top two or three team
- 52:51Speaker 1: in the NBA. Hands down, we just couldn't get out
- 52:54Speaker 1: of our own ways. Hey, we got to stop the
- 52:56Speaker 1: interview real quick to tell you about our family at
- 52:58Speaker 1: Hard Dean. That's right, Hard Dean, Las Vegas. The craziest

- 53:09Speaker 1: it's a bachelor party, whatever's going on. You're going to
- 53:12Speaker 1: go watch the Raiders, suckcock, whatever it is. Make sure
- 53:15Speaker 1: you pull up to Hardean Las Vegas. Tell them I

- 53:34Speaker 1: It smells so good inside of hard Dean that they
- 53:37Speaker 1: have their own Hardens signature scent candle. See I sniffed that.

- 53:46Speaker 1: amazing weed. All right, so go follow them right now,

- 53:58Speaker 1: out to our family in Vegas. I'm excited too, because
- 54:01Speaker 1: coming up we're going to be doing our very first
- 54:03Speaker 1: podcast from Hardin in Vegas with Young Gravy. Oh yeah,
- 54:09Speaker 1: it's going down all right, let's get back to the interview.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Yeah it's kind of crazy man. Yeah yeah. Shout out
- 54:14Speaker 1: to CP. Yeah, where do you want to take all
- 54:19Speaker 1: the smoke? Because you guys have done so much in
- 54:22Speaker 1: such a little amount of time. I feel like you
- 54:24Speaker 1: guys have really put a stake as just the premiere
- 54:28Speaker 1: basketball podcast. You know, I think you guys do it.
- 54:32Speaker 1: In my opinion, you guys are the best. Appreciate that, man,
- 54:35Speaker 1: Thank you first and foremost. Continue to inspire, you know
- 54:38Speaker 1: what I mean. I want people to know that like
- 54:40Speaker 1: we could tell our own stories now, you know, similar
- 54:42Speaker 1: to what you're doing and how you are inspiring people
- 54:44Speaker 1: in your space, like other people have always told our stories,
- 54:47Speaker 1: and now the fact that we can tell our stories
- 54:49Speaker 1: and articulate, you know, how we really feel and what's
- 54:51Speaker 1: going on, instead of happening to hear from someone else,
- 54:53Speaker 1: you could hear from us. So first and foremost we
- 54:56Speaker 1: want to continue to do that. But then just you know,
- 54:57Speaker 1: create great content. You know, I think that you know
- 55:00Speaker 1: the secret to our successes. Like that's really my brother,
- 55:05Speaker 1: I mean, so, like we talk real shit to each
- 55:07Speaker 1: other and say shit to each other that other people can't,
- 55:09Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So we always keep it
- 55:10Speaker 1: light and always joking on each other. You know, when
- 55:13Speaker 1: you come to All the Smoke, you know, when you
- 55:15Speaker 1: get there, we're most likely smoking, listening to music, eating
- 55:18Speaker 1: good food, taking shots, you know, I mean, like kickback.
- 55:20Speaker 1: So we wanted just to create a really cool environment
- 55:23Speaker 1: when you come fuck with us, that you just feel
- 55:26Speaker 1: comfortable enough to kind of let your guard down, you
- 55:28Speaker 1: know what I mean. So I think that's what we've
- 55:30Speaker 1: been able to create with All the Smoke, where you know,
- 55:33Speaker 1: the people say all the time, like man I've never
- 55:34Speaker 1: told nobody this, You're like, damn, they feel comfortable enough
- 55:37Speaker 1: to time. It kind of reminds me of like the
- 55:39Speaker 1: athlete version of like Drink Champs, because people go in
- 55:41Speaker 1: there like, Yo, Norieg is our guy, We've known him
- 55:44Speaker 1: for twenty years. Everyone's having fun, like you kind of
- 55:46Speaker 1: let your guard down because you're in a trusted yeah environment,
- 55:49Speaker 1: you know, you know, you know, they know we're not
- 55:51Speaker 1: trying to do We don't want to go viral for
- 55:53Speaker 1: the wrong reason, you know what I mean. Like, my
- 55:54Speaker 1: whole goal is always just to humanize our guests, like
- 55:56Speaker 1: we know why Steph and KD and Kobe were great,
- 55:59Speaker 1: and Shannon Sharp and Snoop were great, Like what are
- 56:02Speaker 1: they like doing other ship? How did they become who
- 56:04Speaker 1: they became? So I always just want to show people
- 56:06Speaker 1: the other side of you know, some of your favorite people,
- 56:09Speaker 1: and you know, we've you know, we found lightning in
- 56:12Speaker 1: a bottle with this with this show, you know, So
- 56:14Speaker 1: I just you know, I think, just think the evolution.
- 56:16Speaker 1: I just we just started season four and I told
- 56:18Speaker 1: our team, like, you know, we got to continue to elevate,
- 56:20Speaker 1: So we just did our We did a live show
- 56:22Speaker 1: in December with Magic Johnson at the Beverly Hill and
- 56:27Speaker 1: shout Out the Beverly Hilton. So we did a live
- 56:28Speaker 1: show with a live audience. So that'll be dropping I
- 56:30Speaker 1: think next week, which is dope. But I just think
- 56:33Speaker 1: live shows being on linear television as well as YouTube
- 56:38Speaker 1: getting on that real Showtime platform and and and really
- 56:42Speaker 1: kind of continuing to just spread our wings. Man. It's
- 56:45Speaker 1: been fun, Like, you know, Showtime, A big shout out
- 56:47Speaker 1: to Showtime and Malcolksh's kind of their in house production.
- 56:49Speaker 1: They just allowed me to create a lot of other
- 56:51Speaker 1: and do a lot of other things outside of doing
- 56:54Speaker 1: all the smoke. You know, They've they've allowed me to
- 56:56Speaker 1: bring talent in creating shows, producing show Like I'm doing
- 57:00Speaker 1: a bunch of different things about that umbrella. So I
- 57:02Speaker 1: think it's obviously very beneficial for both of us. So
- 57:05Speaker 1: it's been fun. Yeah. Do you feel like because you
- 57:07Speaker 1: have a documentary coming out about your life? Right? No,
- 57:10Speaker 1: So we did. It was just a short a thing
- 57:13Speaker 1: called Revolution that just dropped on Apple, Amazon, all those
- 57:16Speaker 1: kind of things, and it was just kind of a
- 57:17Speaker 1: snibit of you know, life after basketball what I was
- 57:20Speaker 1: kind of doing at the time. I was bored right
- 57:22Speaker 1: when I retired because I didn't really know what I
- 57:24Speaker 1: wanted to do next. So we kind of just started
- 57:25Speaker 1: filming my activism and uh, you know, my street activism,
- 57:30Speaker 1: you know, my cannabis activism, fatherhood, like just what life
- 57:33Speaker 1: was like as I was transitioning from the NBA. So
- 57:37Speaker 1: we started shooting that like a five years ago. We
- 57:39Speaker 1: kind of just wrapped a bow on it and put
- 57:41Speaker 1: it out. So it was just a kind of a
- 57:42Speaker 1: snibit of what's going on in my life, like speak
- 57:45Speaker 1: on the cannabis activism front, because obviously, man, in this country,
- 57:48Speaker 1: there's still a lot of people who are incarcerated for
- 57:51Speaker 1: for some for weed, you know what I'm saying. And uh,
- 57:54Speaker 1: you know, obviously sometimes we live in California, and I
- 57:57Speaker 1: think sometimes we forget that not everywhere is like here.
- 58:02Speaker 1: There's still a serious amount of states that you can't
- 58:05Speaker 1: even get medicinal weed in and it's you know, it's
- 58:07Speaker 1: it's it's kind of fucked up, you know, and what
- 58:10Speaker 1: what are you doing in that space? You know? I
- 58:14Speaker 1: have the cannabis company that I'm a part owner of
- 58:17Speaker 1: of Seven Leaves up in Sack and we just we
- 58:21Speaker 1: were we have a big grow out there, so we
- 58:23Speaker 1: distribute to you know, pre pretty much all over California
- 58:26Speaker 1: with that. I'm a part of uh Chris Weber's got
- 58:31Speaker 1: uh something called Players Only. He's got you know, he's
- 58:34Speaker 1: got a couple hundred million in cannabis funding that he's
- 58:37Speaker 1: been doing some different players with. So I'm doing some
- 58:39Speaker 1: stuff over there, you know. But I really, to be
- 58:43Speaker 1: honest with you, I haven't done a ton lately because
- 58:46Speaker 1: I've been so busy doing media. Like when I first
- 58:48Speaker 1: came out of the NBA, like cannabis is everything in
- 58:50Speaker 1: my advocacy, you know, flying out to New York and
- 58:52Speaker 1: talking to the nv p A and the NBA about
- 58:55Speaker 1: you know, not testing these guys, and like I was
- 58:57Speaker 1: really trying to let people know like this plant can help,
- 59:00Speaker 1: and at the time knowing who smoked and like, you know,
- 59:03Speaker 1: if the world ever knew that knock on wood and
- 59:05Speaker 1: he's announcing now that you know, Kevin Durant is you know,
- 59:08Speaker 1: listening to medicaid and it was just like they would
- 59:11Speaker 1: lose their mind. I've blown down the biggest Phoenix sun
- 59:14Speaker 1: of the last twenty years. Pause no, fifteen. I will
- 59:18Speaker 1: tell you who it is. But yeah, yeah, Steve nashould
- 59:20Speaker 1: be twenty so yeah. Yeah. So it's just like, you know,
- 59:23Speaker 1: everybody's using it. So my advocacy was really heavy on
- 59:26Speaker 1: the social the social impact side, where you know, we're
- 59:30Speaker 1: trying to have you know, black and brown people have
- 59:32Speaker 1: more access to me in lives to to get those licenses.
- 59:37Speaker 1: But it just became so corporate and unfortunately, you know,
- 59:40Speaker 1: dominated by white folks just like everyone else. But you know,
- 59:46Speaker 1: you know, the industry is it's just so saturated now,
- 59:48Speaker 1: it's super saturated. The wead game is so saturated. Everyone
- 59:51Speaker 1: has a fucking strain and a lot of all the
- 59:54Speaker 1: strands are recycled and it's just your shit is just
- 59:57Speaker 1: white labeled with some some other ship. It's put in
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: a different bag. It is kind of crazy. It feels
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: like it does feel like the weed game is kind
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: of because I'm pretty involved a lot in the weed
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: industry as well, and you know, there's so many like
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: if you go to dispensary, there's a lot of that
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: week that's in the same like three or four bags,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: you know that. And then I mean I remember, like
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: I've always been carrying weed, you know, not to just
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: luckily I've been good, but before it was legal, or
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: I'd always because I would always take away when we
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: travel because you couldn't find good weed in other cities.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I mean, now you're you go to your fine, you
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: just find a dispenser. You're gonna find something good, something decent. Yeah,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: so it's just like it it's out there. So it's
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: just it. It got saturated. But you know me, I
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: just stay in my lane, smoke my seven leads. That's
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: all over. You are somebody who, obviously, congratulations you just
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: got engaged to your lady, which is amazing. You've always
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: been somebody who's been on the forefront of letting everybody
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: know being a good follower is a good thing to
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: show off because I feel like you're you're you're you're
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: you're a great father man man. But you also kind
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: of had an era of your personal life on TV,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: which you know, I'm sure there's pluses and there there's
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: gifts and curses of that, but like, is that something
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: that was like because you know, we all we all
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: think about the Derek Fisher thing and all that. We
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: won't get into that, but like, was that something that
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you kind of went through for this new relationship to
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: kind of kind of keep something well you you learn
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: on the fly, you know what I mean. It's it's uh,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: you know, reality TV it was kind of new back then.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: It was very new. You know, there's there's Flavor of
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Love and maybe one O the Real World and then yeah,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: but you guys were the first. I feel like you
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: guys were like the first stuff that lane, like the
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: basketball wise you know, franchise was was was new and
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: it was crazy because my ex wife and I at
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: the time, you know, just had twins. I just moved
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: to Phoenix. I was just that first year, like was
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: that eight Yeah, And I remember my girl starts asking me, like,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you know, Sean Shack's wife, you know, she's going to
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: start the show and it's going to be us, you know,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: raising our families and stepping outside of your shadows and
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: doing charitable work. Just like, nah, we don't need that. Yeah,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: Like we're rich. We got you know, we got two babies,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: we got two brand new babies. You know, we just
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: got to a new team. Let's just let's just so
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: we went back and forth for months and it was
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: just a no, no, no, And then they got shock
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: on me, and Shock kept pressuring me, pressuring me and
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: pressure me and pressuring me, and finally I just said,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: fuck it, all right, let's do it. And you know,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: the one positive from it was it opened the door
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: to you know, this content space for me during that
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: time and just kind of understanding seeing like, Okay, this
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: is how this this shit is made. But you know,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: it's not hard to make quality stuff and said that's
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: not quality, but that's just not my taste stuff. But
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: like I can really get in this space and start creating.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: So it kind of opened my eyes to that back then.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: But then it also crossed me over somewhat to a
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: different audience for sure, you know what I mean, Like
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: that basketball wise, I get sometimes women women will see
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: me in the mall or somewhere like you're the guy
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: from Basketball Wives, aren't you. I'll be like, yeah, you
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: know what I mean. So it's just like it kind
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: of is what it is, but again a learning experience.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: But just realize at that point, once we had opened
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: our personal life up to the world, that it would
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: never close again. We opened that book and you know,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: my ex and I we went through some shit and
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: you know, we ended up divorcing and twenty fifteen and
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: you know, twenty sixteen, it's finalized and you know, the
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: fish shit happened and then you know, me and him
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: made up and you know, now we're co parenting, But
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: it was it took a long time to get to
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: that point. Yeah, I was gonna say, I think for
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: anybody who's watching this who's gone through like a breakup,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: like what if you man co parenting to and being
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: mature about it, it took takes a while to get
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: to that point, right, man, absolutely, because sometimes you know,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: the kids are used, you know, weaponized against you, and
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: it's it's it's tough, you know what I mean. But
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: it's just I think at the end of the day,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: you know, you have to realize that it's bigger than
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: the parents. After that, you know, if you guys have
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: decided to really be apart, it's bigger than y'all. And
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: you know, the kids didn't ask to be brought into
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: the situation, so you got to you know, and it's
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: so common now unfortunately blended families or or you know,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: fathers or motherless home. So learning the co parent you know,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: has taken a long time, and you're you're always learning
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: to be honest with you but you know, the goal
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: is to you know, be on the same page as
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: much as you can with your ex, you know, for
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: the sake of the kids in it. Again, it took
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: us a long time to get there, you know, but
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: we're finally there, and I it's just, you know, the
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: boys are thirteen now. When we split, they were ship
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: That's pretty crazy because I just remember seeing your kids
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: on TV and that, like the fact that they're that
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: old now is like fun. They just turned fourteen. It
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: doesn't feel like that was that long ago. Got mustaches,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: telling my girls and all kinds of shit like that.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I feel like they were just babies. What are they
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: like playing video games? Are they video games? Basketball? Girls? Shoot?
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Do they do the anime thing? A lot of kids
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: are an anime. They have their own podcast called the
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Barnes Boys. Check it out, Oh fire Ze, Like their
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: shit is dope, Like you help them out with like
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: production tips. So I started everything and then I took
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: it over to the company that produces my stuff, Malca,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: and we've turned it into like where about to actually
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: start season two? So that's dope. We got the YouTube
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: channel going, Yeah Barnes Boys, Yeah, Barnes Boys YouTube. So
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: it's dope. So they're into that. They love basketball now
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: and then in video games, so it's you know, and
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: then I had a four year I have a four
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: year old who's coming down the pipe, who's likely six
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: or seven. He's gonna be a big ass defensive end.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: That's why I have my fiance. And then we have
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: her daughter that's eleven, her son that's ten, and her
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: son that's nine. So we bro we got Christmas is active?
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: Oh fuck, every day is fucking active? What Christmas? So
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: we're we're four to fourteen and you know, six kids,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: six kids in the house at once. Crazy, it's turned
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: up animal to eat me out of house and home. Hey,

- 1:07:49Speaker 1: back to the interview. Oh my goodness, Yo, there was
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: one of the more iconic moments that we always see
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: when there's Kobe highlights is when you're on the Magic
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: and you pump face him with the ball and he
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: does not flinch. Talk talk to me about that game
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: in that moment and what led up to that, and
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: just kind of because he didn't flinch at all, and
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: that was kind of, you know, like, you're naturally flinch.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: I don't care how tough you are. You flinch, Yeah, fu,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: how tough you are. Everybody flinch is in that moment.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: First of all, I didn't realize how close it was
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: to his face, but I just thought what I've always thought,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: he's a cold motherfucker. I like. So, I met Kobe
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: in ninety eight. So he came to the Lakers in
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: ninety six. I got to UCLA in ninety eight, and
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: he was young, and so you know, well, document it's
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: kind of an outcast on that team when he'll be younger.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: So he used to be on our campus all the time,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: like eating, chilling, talking to people, working out, playing, picking up.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: So I you know, I've known Kobe on just to
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: what's up level since I was eighteen years old, you know,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: and once I got in the league, it was just
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: always I knew when I was at UCLA he used
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: to sneak back into Polly and work out. I'm just like, yeah,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: this motherfucker is gonna be him. Remember one time when
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: he had a broken right hand, he would do a
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: whole work I left handed, the whole thing like he
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: was a left It was incredible. I'm just like, so,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: you know, got a chance to play with them. They
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: were just always mutual respect, you know what I mean.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: He plays hard, I play hard. So we get to
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: that situation with the Magic and Lakers. They had just
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: played in the finals the year before, yep. So that
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: following year, it was like March getting close to the playoffs,
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: and you know, we're both both sides looking good, so
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: I'm thinking, like, hey, we're gonna play these motherfuckers and finals.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: So it was just a back and forth game and
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: and and you know, guys that played against Cob would
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: tell you like, not only is he a killer, but
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: he's like he tries to mentally bully you and intimidate
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: you too. So he does all the sneak ship with
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: the elbows and sports and held me and my sternaman
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: and knocked the wind out of me that game, Like
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: I caught a lot like he tried to. He was
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: guarding me, and he tried to block the white shot
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: from helpside and it came off the grim perfect and
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I caught a dunk tip and thats all was coming
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: off with her, and this motherfucker eld with me from
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: like my my growing area to my chest and right
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: underneath my chin and the rest right there. I'm like, you,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: bitch ass motherfucker, You're not gonna call nothing, huh like.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: So I just got to the point where I was
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: gonna fight him. It was dope. We talked about it
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: on my podcast. He wasn't budget. I wasn't budget. But
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: long story short, we end up beating them that game.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: They go to finals, beat Boston. We lose to Boston
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: in the Eastern Finals. Lakers beat Boston in the finals,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: and then are you on the Lakers the next year?
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: I'm a free agent the next that summer and the
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: ship with Orlando fell through. So I was actually in
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: tossed with pat Riley to go to the Heat and
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: he's kind of telling me what's coming to the Heat.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: And that's when Bron and Chris Bosh and that's what
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: he was telling me. Who are the crunch time lineup?
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: But be and you know he said it would be
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: you know me, Mike Miller, d Way, Bron and Bosh
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: at im just like, yeah, all of us, six eight,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: all of us do everything that could. And then out
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: of the blue, I get a call on my phone
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: from my number I don't have saved, and I really
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: don't answer my phone anyway. For some reason, I just
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: answered it and it was cold. Yeah, Hello, Yeah, what's
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: going on? Its cold? I'm like, yeah, fuck, who is this? Yeah,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: that's me. I got your number form So so I
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: was like, oh, Okay, what's happening. Who's you gonna do
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: next year? I don't know what you're talking about. He's like,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: you know, we just start going back and forth, and
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: just like any anybody crazy enough to fuck with me,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: it's crazy enough to play with me. Do you want
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: to be a Laker? I'm like, hey, motherfucking yeah. So,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: like three or four days after that, I was a Laker.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: Do you ever think back to like what would have
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: happened if you went to the Heat? Oh? Man, I
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: would have won too, Champ maybe three maybe three? Maybe
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: you would have been the difference against the Mavericks. Oh yeah,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: because I was someone who can you know, put some
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: miles on dart Man. Yeah, never know. Yeah, I mean
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: it's always but to me, it's you know, to get
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: a chance to play, like I grew up a Laker fan.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: Yeah of course. Now help me out here. So you
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: go to the Lakers. Is this around the time Dwight
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: and Steve Nashville? This is I'm in the Clippers by then? Okay,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: okay that makes sense. Yeah, okay, okay, come there. Yeah,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: and you know that unfortunately that situation didn't work out
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: for them. You played with Dwight and I feel like,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: like you were saying earlier, I feel like Dwight somehow
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: does not get a fair shake when we think about
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: the best baby with oh Man, when he was with
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: the Magic, Like we're talking about like all NBA leading
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: every All Star Game. I mean they went to the finals,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: like Dwight beat lebron in the finals with the Eastern Finals.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: Dwight in the Eastern Finals, That's what I mean. Yeah,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: but the most disrespect ever from someone who was a
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: factor on a Lakers championship team a few years ago,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: like a couple of years ago, Like, yeah, yeah, it
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: was incredible. What Dwhight does. He just rushed back from
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: his back surgery, you know what I mean, he something
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: that was supposed to take a year. I think he
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: was back moving around in you know, four or five months.
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: He wanted, you know, to prove itself. Was so bad
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: to the Laker fans, and he was never the same
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: you know, the Dwhite I used to played to play for.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: I never felt more comfortable playing defense than I knew
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: when Dwight I was behind me because he was someone
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: that would lay you out or he can jump to
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: the top of the backboard and block the shot and
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: he was just so fucking strong too. So yeah, D
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: White was a box. Uh, you're obviously a big hip
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: hop guy. Give me your top five favorite albums of
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: all time? I don't. I won't go. Let me go people, Okay,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: give me your top five because you got Tupac on
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: your hand. Yeah, I got Tupac and Nipsey on my hand.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna take Tupac and and and Biggie out of it. Okay,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: that's fair. Me. Those are my two all time favorites
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: outside of that and that's and and anybody can say
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: those two who do I listen to the most. I
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: listened to jay Z, I listened to to Wayne, I
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: listened to Drake, I listened to Nipsy. It's my fifth
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: gonna be it's probably gonna be a tie between like
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: Rick Ross and Snoop. That's fair, that's fair. Yeah, that's
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: not a bad five. What you funk with any of
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: the younger ship because obviously there's my kids like I
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: like Little Baby. I saw that there was a little there.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Let me ask you, because you're a hip hop here,
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: there was a debate. Obviously I know where I stand,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: but they said, uh, a little Wayne or Little Baby thing.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: It's a little Wayne. I don't even think it's close.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: It's not even close. It's like, like, let's relax, a
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: relax with all due respects, with all due respect. I
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: love Little Baby and I love My Turn a great album.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Everyone needs to fucking relax. Everyone needs to relax. I
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: saw that tweet going viral. I'm like, guys, everyone needs
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: to fucking relaxed for I didn't even comment on it,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: just because I knew that and I'm very and I'm
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: very critical of a little Wayne. Everyone needs the fucking relax.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: They're not in the same fucking conversation. Yeah, people, These
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Twitter people are fucking insane. I'll just be staying in
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: my like I said, if I hear it out and
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: about or you know, in the in the content space
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: out here and my kids are telling me about it,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: but most of the time I'll be staying in my
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: own you know. I mean, the the people I listed,
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: I'd be kind of staying to them, Like heavy on Nip, Huge,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: just huge fan of Nip. Got a chance to meet
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Nip when man. When I first came to the Lakers
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: sold in two thousand and my brothers always put me
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: on music. It was like you forty always at these
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Warriors games, there was this something that Okay, you know
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: he was loyal. I love Forty. That's my guy. He
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: was loyal to the soil. I just want to make
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: sure he's keeping that energy because him and I argue
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: all the time about sports. He's always from. He was
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: always from. That's the one thing about the Bay not
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: to change subject. That was always dope was the Bay
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: always show love like the like that we believe team
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: we made history, but they had been bulleted. But it
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: always the fans were always crazy. It always smelled like
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: weed and oracle like the Bay was. That was such
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: a crazy uh just it was what was it you?
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Michael Petrice, Baron Davis, They Rich, Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington,
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Monte Ellis Beadrince b Drins that big tall mm hmm
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: Germany from Lafia. He's from one of those fucking yeah
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: to drink his ass on boy. They used to call
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: him Goose because he was in the club with the
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: whole thing of Goose. When did you leave the Warriors
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: eight nine, two and two thousand and nine. I was
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: there two thousand and six seven. Monte Alis was coming
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: off the bench on that team. When you say Monte
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: was the most improved player that year, I think in
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: the NBA. But he rotated from he went back and
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: forth from starting coming off the bench. I started off.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: He was a bucket, man, Man was a killer. He
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: was a bucket. He was just a baby. But yeah,
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: my table is nice. Me listen, man. I love the podcast.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: I love everything you're doing. I love watching you on TV.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: You do a great job. I feel like, like we
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: were talking about earlier, Man, sometimes you'll see like people
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: who are on TV and they got there because you know,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: just because you're the biggest day, don't mean you're great
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: at talking about shit on TV. Let's just say that.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: I think we've realized that safe. Yeah, that's safe to say,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: but it's dope to see, you know. I feel like
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: you've done a great job of turning turning your second
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: career into something that's that's on high integrity. And I
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: just I mean to me and I'm always me, like
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: JT said that one time and to me a residents
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: so much like every room I'm rock in on me. Yep,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: you know, whether I'm at ESPN, I can't cuss as
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: much as I normally tut. I'm still gonna be me,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: you know. I mean, I'm in every room, I walking
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: I'm walking into NBC doing the King shit, I'm walking
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: into Showtime doing all the smoke. I'm doing stuff with ESPN,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I've done stuff with Fox. Like I'm just always me,
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: and I think that's kind of allowed me to, first
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: of all, dispell any kind the notions you may have
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: had about me, like, yeah, he's a dog, he's this
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: is not just a competitor. And I like to fight.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I don't like to fight when I'm over. But that's
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: just who I was as a player, you know. But
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: as a as a as a man, as a father,
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: as a business owner, as a as a as a
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: as a mind, I'd like to say I kind of
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: got it together. So it's just we got to smoke out.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Stephen A. Yeah, he owes me to smoke out. Actually,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: And I feel like Richard Jefferson could use some fucking
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: weed because he's he seems a little uptight. Listened him up?
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: Does r J smoking mass? I don't know you should
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: find out. Shout out to r J. You of a
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: even though I fuck with a su over u A.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: But yeah, man, who he who oh weight on nine
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: on the Suns. That was Steve Nash, was that Robin
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: was that Robin Lopez, Robin Lopez, Grant Hill, Rajah Bell
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: That was the first year Shack was on the team,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: right when we traded from so Yeah, Rajah Bell was
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: a dog too, was tough. Yeah, marche Stodamyer So that's
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: the year Maris State that almost got his eye poked out,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: and the remember and didn't really play like half. We
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: had Terry Porter. Terry Porter's a new coach. Terry Port. Oh,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I was able to get fired at All Star breaks.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I remember that you fired after like not even I
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: remember that Terry Porter was a terrible coach. You know what? Okay,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: did you play with Earl Watson at U c l A. Okay,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: he coached our sons for a little bit, right. A
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: lot of people feel like he got a bad shake.
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: What do you think he did? I liked it and
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: and the and the players resonated with him too, because
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: I feel like they fired him like super quick and like, dude,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: he inherited a ship show with Eric Bledsoe didn't want
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: to be there that it was Ryan McDonough was trash
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: and yeah, it was it was under some racial tension
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: that him went down with Sarvar. That's how he got fired.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: Did you catch any of the racial tension ship because
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: you you played for Donald Sterling, right, Yeah, that I
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: was on that team. You were on that team and
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: the Warriors in the playoffs and that was crazy, crazy
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Chris Paul has been on two of those teams now.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: But when you played for the Suns for that short stint,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: did you notice any of that type of like work
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: environment or any of the No, because I wasn't you
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: know what I mean, I wasn't really mixing with him,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like, you know, obviously on
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: the guys on the team, he's going to be cool
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: with around, He's going to be cool. He's always he's
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: trying to be cool, you know. So I never really
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: saw no smoke. I had just had a little bit
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: of smoke with him once I left, and he toak
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: some slictions me during the game and I told him
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: I slaped the shit out of him, and he told
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: him and I got fined. What was it like playing
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: with Steve though? Sharp mind, hard worker, tough, tough. Yeah,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Nash was a beast. I just think that he he
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: just wasn't the right fit. I you know, I hope.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I think Steve can be a good coach in this league.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: I just don't think that was the right The NETS
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: fit was right for him. But I mean, Steve is
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: a bright mind, and yeah, I feel like the NETS
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: thing is like you kind of you kind of don't
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: want to be a fellow Hall of Famer coaching the
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: other Hall of famers. If that makes it, I don't know,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: but yeah, we'll see. Man, would you ever get into
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: coaching thanks of too much time? Yeah? He probably make
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: more money doing your thing anyway, and got a lot
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: of respect. I coached my kids AU team, but that ship,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: that's two time consumer. I just don't have time. There
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: it is, bro, We'll listen all the smoke new episodes?
