- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening podcast. You can't
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are the
- 0:22Speaker 1: most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the Hunt
- 0:26Speaker 1: app from the iTunes or Google play store, nor where
- 0:29Speaker 1: you stand with on X. I'm having a lot of
- 0:36Speaker 1: problems with my fake tooth. Well I have to fake
- 0:38Speaker 1: I don't. I have a few fake teeth. One of
- 0:40Speaker 1: my fake teeth. We're gonna fill the listeners at home
- 0:44Speaker 1: into what we're talking about, Okay, then we'll get down
- 0:46Speaker 1: to a bunch of this stuff. Okay. Um, I feel
- 0:51Speaker 1: like I told people along time we're hunting in Damn.
- 0:54Speaker 1: When was that last fall? Hunting and wheming? And I
- 0:57Speaker 1: developed a horrible, horrible toothache, like bad, um so bad
- 1:05Speaker 1: that I was it was hard to eat my supper
- 1:11Speaker 1: got real painful. Ran into a guy that I would
- 1:13Speaker 1: have thought, I don't mean to discredit this dude, like
- 1:15Speaker 1: I just caught him on a whatever day, like, but
- 1:17Speaker 1: someone's like, hey, that guy is a dentist. And I
- 1:22Speaker 1: don't mean to generalize or stereotype like looking at him.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I just didn't see dentist. When I looked at him,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I wasn't like, there's a dentist. I expected dynist to
- 1:31Speaker 1: be wearing a golf shirt or something, right, yeah, but
- 1:36Speaker 1: lo and behold, the guy was a dentist. And he
- 1:39Speaker 1: goes in, uh, he goes and gets me some some
- 1:42Speaker 1: kind of opioid from his dentist shop. And I started
- 1:46Speaker 1: taking that get holding right away. I walk into my
- 1:50Speaker 1: regular dentist and he's like, that thing's got to come out.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And I had broken the what do you call it,
- 1:58Speaker 1: part goes way up in your head, your root. Yeah,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I cracked the root probably a long time ago, but
- 2:07Speaker 1: it had become all infected. So they pulled it out
- 2:11Speaker 1: and they packed it full of I know I covered
- 2:14Speaker 1: this on the show. They packed it full of cadaver bone.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, remember here. So there I am walking around
- 2:20Speaker 1: all days spitting up chunks of someone else's bone. M
- 2:24Speaker 1: not show people. And then when they put that cadaver
- 2:28Speaker 1: bone in there, I asked him, I said, what can
- 2:30Speaker 1: you tell me about the feller? Who uh, who's bone
- 2:33Speaker 1: I have? And they can't. They can't tell anything about
- 2:36Speaker 1: him legally, they can't just that or they don't know
- 2:39Speaker 1: or whatever, but I would like to. I wanted to
- 2:41Speaker 1: visit his relatives or something to tell you he could
- 2:46Speaker 1: have been a horrible guy. I don't know. How do
- 2:48Speaker 1: you know? It's just one person probably swallowed some of
- 2:53Speaker 1: that and then what They filled the cavity full of bones,
- 2:59Speaker 1: So you're I might be screwing this up. They fill
- 3:02Speaker 1: the the vacated spots, They yank all the junk out
- 3:06Speaker 1: of there, basically take a jackhammer to it and put
- 3:09Speaker 1: all that gunk out of there. Then they fill some
- 3:12Speaker 1: full of some dude's bones. And somehow I could be
- 3:15Speaker 1: getting this wrong with like like like your body recognizes
- 3:20Speaker 1: bone is bone somehow and then makes it turn into
- 3:24Speaker 1: bone fills in the gaps. Yeah, it's like, oh, I
- 3:28Speaker 1: get it. There's something. But the little granules come up.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It looks like three g gunpowder coming out of there.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You are spitting it up. You know. I'd spit it
- 3:37Speaker 1: up and show people eventually that that healed up. I
- 3:43Speaker 1: had to wait months. I say, how long does it
- 3:45Speaker 1: take for your body to start that process? I think
- 3:47Speaker 1: it was like three or four months? Okay. Then I
- 3:50Speaker 1: go in there and they put in a titanium socket
- 3:59Speaker 1: like a female redded a component, and you're body heals
- 4:07Speaker 1: around that. The bone heals around that socket. So he
- 4:10Speaker 1: told me, if you ever lose this tooth, mean the
- 4:13Speaker 1: one that's given me all the trouble. He's like, if
- 4:15Speaker 1: you ever lose this tooth, it'll take a chunk of
- 4:17Speaker 1: your jaw with it. Like this thing is in there,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and you put that socket there, then you wait three
- 4:23Speaker 1: or four more months. During that interval, I started the
- 4:28Speaker 1: question why I have the molder anyway? Yeah? Why you
- 4:32Speaker 1: just get it removed? Because, um, once I got used
- 4:35Speaker 1: to it not being there, there was no problem. And
- 4:38Speaker 1: I started asking around and a lot of my closest
- 4:40Speaker 1: friends and associates are missing their teeth. Seth here say
- 4:47Speaker 1: something stuff. I'm just he doesn't have one, he says.
- 4:52Speaker 1: The only well you tell him? South, Tell what, what's
- 4:54Speaker 1: the only time you remember that you're missing your molar?
- 4:57Speaker 1: The only time I remember, um, when I missing it
- 5:00Speaker 1: is when I'm eating trail mixing a peanut that's just
- 5:03Speaker 1: the right size and get stuck in there. Let's see,
- 5:05Speaker 1: open up. It's like a decoit moler. Oh yeah, this
- 5:09Speaker 1: this tooth was a root canal that they did a
- 5:12Speaker 1: root canal on it, and then you know, they killed
- 5:14Speaker 1: the roots, so just eventually decayed and fell apart and
- 5:17Speaker 1: fell out, and I took the rest out, and they
- 5:19Speaker 1: tried to talk in to give him two thousand bucks
- 5:21Speaker 1: for a new one. Yeah, they told me I had
- 5:23Speaker 1: to come back and get it paired up or fixed up,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and I never went. My problem is I lost the
- 5:27Speaker 1: one right up front, and if I didn't have that,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I would be I think I would be judged, well,
- 5:33Speaker 1: this hockey player, this front one's fake. I always believe
- 5:38Speaker 1: in getting your front ones. Yeah, you have fake's front
- 5:41Speaker 1: horse trailer handy man Jack, how'd they happen? Dirt? That
- 5:46Speaker 1: is the dirtiest hat I ever seen in my entire life.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Definitely the record. It looks like it's waxed, candidates waterproof.
- 5:57Speaker 1: This handyman Jack's a good story for the listeners, so
- 6:00Speaker 1: they prevent losing the front two table. Let me tell
- 6:02Speaker 1: I want to hear it, but it's want to remind
- 6:03Speaker 1: people where we're at. I'm in the middle of telling
- 6:07Speaker 1: this is not what this show is about. The show
- 6:09Speaker 1: is about firearms. I'm in the middle of telling about
- 6:14Speaker 1: all my problems in my tooth, which is people are
- 6:16Speaker 1: dying to know about this is like really like people
- 6:20Speaker 1: are loving this episode. Never mind you please, I want
- 6:26Speaker 1: to hear the handyman Jack. I'm joking about them. I'm joking,
- 6:29Speaker 1: but no one cares about my moler. But I'm gonna
- 6:30Speaker 1: tell them anyway. I don't care. Well, you just I
- 6:32Speaker 1: was they care about. I was always told with those
- 6:34Speaker 1: handyman Jack's that you know, keep your face away from
- 6:39Speaker 1: the handle because they're prone to kind of jump on you.
- 6:43Speaker 1: People know what a handyman Jack is. Dead man's life
- 6:47Speaker 1: and it was jammed up. Nowadays, the young waper snappers
- 6:50Speaker 1: like to have a fix to the outside of the
- 6:52Speaker 1: truck red because they're gonna do some serious jacket uh um,
- 6:59Speaker 1: hey do can the monkey Wrench gang? He was he
- 7:02Speaker 1: had a lot of good things. Oh yeah, they're great,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but if they get gunked up. Well, it got gunked up.
- 7:08Speaker 1: We had a horse trailer on it, and then my
- 7:10Speaker 1: brother couldn't get it unloose, and I just went over
- 7:12Speaker 1: there and kicked it, and the handle popped me in
- 7:14Speaker 1: the face couple of times more than one. It was
- 7:19Speaker 1: quick because it was like, yeah, I kicked it and
- 7:23Speaker 1: it released whatever was stuck, but my face was over
- 7:26Speaker 1: the handle. I mean before I didn't even hurt. There
- 7:29Speaker 1: was like a battle of Buster, the battle of the
- 7:31Speaker 1: Buster scrugs or the guy getting shot twice by the pistol.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It doesn't even know it because it's so quick. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 1: knocked that tooth out. I actually broke it and knocked it.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Now it's just bent kind But yeah, to root canals
- 7:45Speaker 1: and set both those chief line. No, just the one,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but I think they did two root canals because it
- 7:52Speaker 1: got infected or something. I camera. Yeah, it was funny
- 7:54Speaker 1: in hell. One time I had my brother shot this
- 7:58Speaker 1: one out for begun. No man, we got to take
- 8:01Speaker 1: an uh we're little kids, man. We took aluminum arrows
- 8:05Speaker 1: and cut the ends off them, cut the knock off
- 8:08Speaker 1: and cut the insert off. And we realized that those
- 8:10Speaker 1: light bright pegs, remember light bright. Oh god, it gives
- 8:16Speaker 1: me like you get this, there's this board full of holes.
- 8:18Speaker 1: There's a light bulb when you get these designs right,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and like be letters to tell you what color, and
- 8:22Speaker 1: you put these little pegs there and the light would
- 8:25Speaker 1: come through the peg and you make like so whatever
- 8:27Speaker 1: you make like unicorn or something on a light bright.
- 8:29Speaker 1: But a light bright peg fit perfect in that illuminum arrow,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and so we do blowgun fights with those light bright
- 8:36Speaker 1: pegs because like a pointed projectile man it had had
- 8:40Speaker 1: like a good ballistic coefficient man that light But this
- 8:43Speaker 1: du we hung out with Davy Cole. His old man
- 8:46Speaker 1: worked at a ball bearing plant and had all man
- 8:49Speaker 1: or a ball bearings. And so someone came into some
- 8:51Speaker 1: ball bearings that fit that same tube, and we realized
- 8:53Speaker 1: how to do something called a machine gun, which is
- 8:56Speaker 1: where you'd fill your mouth full of those ball bearings,
- 9:00Speaker 1: take a deep breath, right and then and you'd use
- 9:05Speaker 1: your tongue funnel him in and you'd get like a
- 9:09Speaker 1: semi automatic effect fully automatic. So I'll be like, right,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and we had these fortresses built and whatnot and goggles,
- 9:17Speaker 1: you know. But I remember he come up and he
- 9:21Speaker 1: kind of ripped me, crotched the eyeball with a with
- 9:23Speaker 1: a you know, with a burst, and shot the tooth
- 9:28Speaker 1: clean off at the gum line. Oh man, this story,
- 9:33Speaker 1: like this story really starts to make its own gravy,
- 9:36Speaker 1: because man, I want to get back to this other thing,
- 9:39Speaker 1: but this is this is interesting. I go in and
- 9:44Speaker 1: I don't want to say his name the dentist that
- 9:49Speaker 1: the denk I initially go to see and that did
- 9:51Speaker 1: a root canal on me, was later shot and killed
- 9:55Speaker 1: by his own son. He was watching TV and his
- 9:59Speaker 1: son came up behind him. How old was this? No? No, no,
- 10:05Speaker 1: old dude, older dude. Oh, I actually have a picture
- 10:08Speaker 1: of my old man. It's in my desk, my old
- 10:11Speaker 1: man that dennists in the in the in the Dennis's
- 10:14Speaker 1: kid that later shot him in the back of the
- 10:16Speaker 1: head watching TV. What was the reason? I don't know
- 10:20Speaker 1: about it. I don't think about what happened. So he
- 10:24Speaker 1: that dentist does a root canal. I'm building up to
- 10:28Speaker 1: another part of this. But he does a root canal,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and and I don't see any problem. Like the root
- 10:36Speaker 1: canal is fine. And I go throughout my life and
- 10:37Speaker 1: I keep getting these fake caps on there. How old
- 10:40Speaker 1: are you? Um? Had just grew that tooth too, because
- 10:46Speaker 1: you only need a little one falls out, like my
- 10:48Speaker 1: kids are losing all their teeth all the time. Now, Yeah,
- 10:50Speaker 1: it just grew that new big bastard good target. I know.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So uh a decade, it goes by, a decade plus
- 11:02Speaker 1: goes by, and I developed a horrible toothache hunting deer,
- 11:07Speaker 1: which is the weird part hunting mulder. Just like the
- 11:09Speaker 1: tootha I'm trying to tell about. Now, I develop a
- 11:11Speaker 1: horrible not a toothache and nose ache. I think something's
- 11:14Speaker 1: wrong my nose. I think I got a nose disease.
- 11:18Speaker 1: So we get done with our hunting trip and I
- 11:20Speaker 1: go to the dentist or a doctor. I'm like, man,
- 11:23Speaker 1: something's wrong the inside of my nose. And he's like, no,
- 11:25Speaker 1: that's not a nose you got a tooth problem. To
- 11:27Speaker 1: go to dnist. It's not a nose problem. It's like
- 11:30Speaker 1: the dentist and he's like, your root canal is abscess
- 11:32Speaker 1: or failed or whatever. He gets the rooting around in
- 11:35Speaker 1: there and pulls out a hunk of rusted file. It
- 11:41Speaker 1: looked like a file that if you threw a file
- 11:44Speaker 1: down into the ocean, like in some ocean beach right
- 11:49Speaker 1: at my fish shack. If you throw an old rat
- 11:51Speaker 1: tail file out there and left it there for ten
- 11:52Speaker 1: years and went back and got it, that's what it
- 11:54Speaker 1: looked like, a rusted, pitted, how long file about an
- 11:58Speaker 1: inch and a half long. Holy show. And the guy
- 12:04Speaker 1: got it out and he said, man, I could not
- 12:06Speaker 1: tell what I was looking at on the X ray,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and it was metal and he had busted off the
- 12:13Speaker 1: guy that got shot by his kid had busted off
- 12:16Speaker 1: a hunk a rat tail file up in there. Pastor
- 12:22Speaker 1: and whatever told my old man, or told my old man,
- 12:25Speaker 1: or didn't tell me old man, I don't know, and
- 12:28Speaker 1: uh sealed it up in there where it's set to
- 12:30Speaker 1: rusting the cane and whatnot. I don't know, it's not
- 12:34Speaker 1: it's not oxidizing. Maybe there's an oxygen. I don't know
- 12:36Speaker 1: if it's oxygen there not, But either way, got all
- 12:39Speaker 1: rusty and I kept that thing and walked around it
- 12:41Speaker 1: for a long time ago. I can't figure out what
- 12:43Speaker 1: the hell I did with it, which leads me to
- 12:47Speaker 1: question about that was this around when you went to
- 12:49Speaker 1: a guy on it the first time? No, No, that's
- 12:51Speaker 1: what I'm trying to get taken. Well, I'm trying to
- 12:54Speaker 1: get to my main dental problem. But the funny part
- 12:56Speaker 1: is one time, so I had that fake too, like
- 13:01Speaker 1: from the all this the whole story, I had that
- 13:03Speaker 1: fake tooth, and one time it fell out in the snow.
- 13:06Speaker 1: It's about knee deep snow, and I knew right where
- 13:09Speaker 1: it fell out because I was laying down trying to shoot.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I was actually late, like drawing a bead on something,
- 13:14Speaker 1: and um in the snow, and all of a sudden,
- 13:17Speaker 1: like when I put my cheek up to the I
- 13:19Speaker 1: put my cheek up to the stock, it felt like
- 13:21Speaker 1: something not right, do you know what I mean? Like
- 13:24Speaker 1: it's like a normal field or like somehow not right.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And and yeah, and it was just we looked and
- 13:31Speaker 1: looked through that snow. But you can't find a tooth
- 13:34Speaker 1: in the snow? Were you muled you're hunting that time? Dude?
- 13:37Speaker 1: Did you get the critter you were beating up on?
- 13:42Speaker 1: How is that great? How was that gripping grand photo?
- 13:47Speaker 1: Having a bad time with that tooth? So this current
- 13:51Speaker 1: issue I'm having once I got it out, So you
- 13:53Speaker 1: don't have a tooth. Another close relative of mine, uh,
- 13:59Speaker 1: he's missing a couple of them. And he said, I'll
- 14:02Speaker 1: think less of you if you get that mouler installed.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Like they don't serve any purpose. And when I went in,
- 14:09Speaker 1: they make you sign a little thing because they must
- 14:10Speaker 1: have a lot of people go home thinking they're gonna
- 14:14Speaker 1: get a molar and change their mind once they realize
- 14:17Speaker 1: that they're stupid into that. They try to make you
- 14:23Speaker 1: sign like a little agreement that you're gonna turn back
- 14:25Speaker 1: up again to get the mouler installed, which can't be binding.
- 14:28Speaker 1: But anyways, all the time goes by and I don't
- 14:29Speaker 1: even want the stupid mouler anymore. But people keep trying
- 14:32Speaker 1: to say, like, oh, your teeth will all migrate spread out.
- 14:35Speaker 1: And my wife would say, if you smile big, I
- 14:38Speaker 1: can see the whole where it used to be as
- 14:41Speaker 1: a cameraman, you smile real big, I see that whole,
- 14:45Speaker 1: you know what. Then I get where I don't even
- 14:48Speaker 1: care anymore, and I think mullers are stupid. And I
- 14:50Speaker 1: go down and they put the moller in, and there
- 14:53Speaker 1: is not a day gone by. I'm happy they got
- 14:55Speaker 1: that molder in there. It is the This is what
- 14:58Speaker 1: me and Rick were talking about before we hit record.
- 15:00Speaker 1: It is the food catching this some of a bit
- 15:03Speaker 1: on the planet. I watched your brushing your teeth there
- 15:06Speaker 1: to night, and I was like, wow, Steve's really going
- 15:08Speaker 1: to town outside of his face. But you thought I
- 15:11Speaker 1: was doing it over here. I thought you were, But
- 15:13Speaker 1: then I was over here you were in the mirror.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Maybe no, I looked I just glanced up at him,
- 15:20Speaker 1: but I saw Steve just going to town. I was like, oh, man,
- 15:24Speaker 1: I must be still trying to get stuff out of
- 15:25Speaker 1: your teeth. Well I get it out all the time.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Something's stuck in there killing me. Uh that's all okay,
- 15:33Speaker 1: that was That was an interesting story. I have a question, oh,
- 15:36Speaker 1: please go ahead, unrelated to your teeth, but when you
- 15:39Speaker 1: were doing the ball bearing fights, did anyone ever swallow
- 15:41Speaker 1: a ball bearing? Not that I recall. We had a
- 15:45Speaker 1: lot of access these. Oh. An invention we worked on
- 15:47Speaker 1: for quite a while and we're a little is we um.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I felt that you that we were working on an
- 15:55Speaker 1: invention whereby you'd take ball bearings and make a masking
- 16:00Speaker 1: tape you it was meant to be a frag grenade.
- 16:04Speaker 1: M not a frag what's the kind of gre you're
- 16:07Speaker 1: from the military. What's the grenade that has the shrapnel
- 16:09Speaker 1: that flies out? Frag grenade? But you're trying to probably claimer,
- 16:13Speaker 1: but all that is the kind of just go nothing
- 16:16Speaker 1: happens like a concussion grenade. Fragmentation grenade is the one
- 16:20Speaker 1: we were working on it. We're working on a frag
- 16:23Speaker 1: grenade in bention, by which you take half dozen ball
- 16:26Speaker 1: bearings and wrap them in masking tape, and then when
- 16:31Speaker 1: you pulled back with your slingshot, thinking being that you'd
- 16:36Speaker 1: hit a tree or outside of a house or whatever,
- 16:38Speaker 1: and the masking shower squirrels or your brother or whatever,
- 16:43Speaker 1: shower them with freg freg. I think it's a good
- 16:49Speaker 1: inventive thing for kids to do that work. No, we
- 16:52Speaker 1: never got it perfected. We worked on We worked on
- 16:55Speaker 1: quite a bit that little bit of technology. Yeah, a
- 16:57Speaker 1: lot of good access to ball bearing. Another one more
- 17:00Speaker 1: ball bearing question. When you guys were going around shooting
- 17:03Speaker 1: knees at each other, would you pick them back up
- 17:06Speaker 1: off the ground and keep popping them in your mouth
- 17:08Speaker 1: as you'd go My mom's if you went in and
- 17:12Speaker 1: I should have my mom on the should My mom's
- 17:16Speaker 1: primary gripe in life was um, if you you know,
- 17:20Speaker 1: like my mom had a hoover vacuum. Um. Remember I
- 17:23Speaker 1: had a little light bulb like a little headlight. Yes,
- 17:27Speaker 1: I remember my brother taking that out and eating it
- 17:30Speaker 1: and just caught in the inside of his mouth on
- 17:32Speaker 1: the holy hell and needed to go try to eat it.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I screwed it out. When he's a little little kid,
- 17:38Speaker 1: pulled out, not during the baby dude. He crashed into
- 17:42Speaker 1: the side of the house one time. I got thirty
- 17:44Speaker 1: two stitches across his fore him. My mouth thought he
- 17:46Speaker 1: was dead. Older brother, You need to have your mom,
- 17:49Speaker 1: Matt and Dan the podcast to sort all this ship out.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Because my dad didn't know what my dad had. He
- 17:56Speaker 1: had one of those sleds of the Runners on it,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and my dad's shoved down the hill towards the house
- 18:01Speaker 1: and he didn't know he couldn't steer. My dad sy
- 18:03Speaker 1: He's kept going, going, going, going, flap right into the
- 18:06Speaker 1: block foundation of and uh got all those stitches and yeah,
- 18:11Speaker 1: then ate that light bulb out of the hoover. But man,
- 18:15Speaker 1: listen to my mom back and you know, like and
- 18:18Speaker 1: also you're here like where you suck up one of
- 18:21Speaker 1: those ball bearings or babies or something. Oh my gosh,
- 18:23Speaker 1: you would get bad. But I'm sure I have no
- 18:26Speaker 1: doubt we recycled. Yah, it was pretty covid. Yeah, you
- 18:30Speaker 1: gotta steve, You gotta hanger on the left. Good things,
- 18:34Speaker 1: good thing, it's radio. I want to get it though, man,
- 18:39Speaker 1: you got it. Um, explain to me U one of
- 18:42Speaker 1: you pencil we're in Pennsylvania. We're with two genuine Pennsylvanians.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Rick Cotton, I've never been on the show before. First time,
- 18:51Speaker 1: Seth Morris many times, dirts from Montana. No Pa roots here,
- 18:58Speaker 1: Lawrence here, how's it going? Minnesota guy Minnesota, camera, Minnesota
- 19:03Speaker 1: and Washington. Never been hunting his life, Smith Um explain
- 19:15Speaker 1: to me how uh I want. I want to get
- 19:19Speaker 1: into the like the flint lock deal, but I think
- 19:23Speaker 1: the first thing I want to cover off on, which
- 19:24Speaker 1: is really interesting, is that we spent a fair bit
- 19:27Speaker 1: of time talking about Sunday hunting over the years. It's
- 19:31Speaker 1: very interesting to me that the ban on Sunday hunting
- 19:37Speaker 1: goes back three years prior to Custer dying at the
- 19:44Speaker 1: Little Big Horn. Unrelated, very unrelated, but he put it
- 19:49Speaker 1: in perspective, Yeah, eighteen seventy three mm just wrapping up
- 19:57Speaker 1: the old Civil War was uh. I don't even so.
- 20:01Speaker 1: A lot of that stuff researched before we came out here.
- 20:05Speaker 1: But I definitely that predates depends Whania Game Commission, but
- 20:09Speaker 1: that might be one of the first legal laws pertaining
- 20:12Speaker 1: the hunting. I know it says also but the band
- 20:15Speaker 1: of seating spotted fawns in one year in eighteen seventy three,
- 20:20Speaker 1: they banned killing fawns with spotted coats and Sunday hunting. Yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and it's like deeply rooted in this state. I would
- 20:30Speaker 1: love to go back to hear um what was said
- 20:37Speaker 1: at the time me too, Like what was like like
- 20:42Speaker 1: like how vocal was the debate I have? Yeah, I
- 20:48Speaker 1: don't know if it was super vocal or anything, but
- 20:49Speaker 1: you just the only way I can wrap my head
- 20:51Speaker 1: around it, it's, you know, it's Commonwealth, and Pennsylvania is
- 20:56Speaker 1: a Quaker state. You know, Philadelphia and the history of
- 20:59Speaker 1: the states all based in the Quaker faith. So yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: the Sabbath cannot go out on Sunday to day of rest.
- 21:07Speaker 1: So that's But other than that, I don't know the
- 21:09Speaker 1: exact route to that, But I can't imagine was he
- 21:12Speaker 1: it was accepted generally, Probably was, to be honest, I think, so, Yeah.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I wonder if people were pissed. I mean, some people
- 21:21Speaker 1: had passed and some people had to ignored it for long.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I was just I bet a lot of people have
- 21:24Speaker 1: ignored it. What's interesting is that then stood for like
- 21:28Speaker 1: a hundred and six years and just now, just now
- 21:34Speaker 1: it's they're starting to ease. Was the first year Sunday
- 21:39Speaker 1: hunting is allowed. Seth knows the Actually they allowed three Sundays. Yeah,
- 21:43Speaker 1: there was one Sunday, which was one Sunday in archery,
- 21:46Speaker 1: which was the last Sunday in November. It's not the
- 21:49Speaker 1: last Sunday November, but the last Sunday of the season
- 21:51Speaker 1: is in November. Um, the Sunday during bear season and
- 21:58Speaker 1: then a sun the first Sunday of the rifle season
- 22:02Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania are the three Sundays that you can now
- 22:05Speaker 1: hunt unless you choose to hunt coyotes, foxes, or crows.
- 22:12Speaker 1: That is a okay, definitely, it must be the devil's critters. Well,
- 22:19Speaker 1: they messed with agriculture more. That's why. That's why it
- 22:23Speaker 1: eased up. So what do you do you think they're
- 22:28Speaker 1: aiming toward? Like, um, there's like a lot of movement
- 22:31Speaker 1: away from blue like blue laws at first two. That's
- 22:33Speaker 1: what blue laws will be, like all these things like
- 22:36Speaker 1: your tavern can't be open on a Sunday, you can't
- 22:38Speaker 1: do this on a Sunday, that on a Sunday. Do
- 22:41Speaker 1: you think that this is just like a step toward
- 22:43Speaker 1: like getting rid of that altogether. Yeah, and I think
- 22:45Speaker 1: Pennsylvania is the state that's been stepping that way because
- 22:47Speaker 1: when we were kids, I don't know the alcohol on
- 22:51Speaker 1: by week, like no alcohol sales and Sunday. I remember
- 22:54Speaker 1: my dad could never you can never buy alcohol on Sunday.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And now you can write something like that or yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 1: there's in it up now because he used to always
- 23:01Speaker 1: be distributors and now there's beer and stores, like they're
- 23:05Speaker 1: allowing grocery stores to get and I don't it's because
- 23:08Speaker 1: those stores are buying. There's like a there's like a
- 23:10Speaker 1: set amount of liquor licenses m h. And like I don't,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I don't think they can make anymore. So like if
- 23:17Speaker 1: a bar goes out of business, someone else can buy
- 23:20Speaker 1: their liquor license, so like you know, for an example,
- 23:26Speaker 1: there's a bar in Milesburg, Pennsylvania, which was, um not
- 23:31Speaker 1: too not too far from here. Um a bar went
- 23:35Speaker 1: out of business. A gas station bought the liquor license
- 23:38Speaker 1: and set up shop right across the street and they
- 23:42Speaker 1: sell the gas station cells like twelve packs and stuff. Yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 1: cells beer, which that never used to be the case.
- 23:50Speaker 1: So like that's easing up, like blue laws are changing
- 23:52Speaker 1: now Sunday hunting, which that's been a big thing. And
- 23:55Speaker 1: I haven't been in Pennsylvania for all that shift, but
- 23:58Speaker 1: I know growing up here, I couldn't stand the fact
- 24:01Speaker 1: that we could not hunt on Sunday. I thought it
- 24:02Speaker 1: was the dumbest things terrible. It would it be such?
- 24:05Speaker 1: Is like as strict as if you were hunting out
- 24:07Speaker 1: of season? Or is it like a lesser five? You know,
- 24:10Speaker 1: I don't know, but it's I think it's yeah, hunting
- 24:12Speaker 1: out of season for sure, it's that kind of punishment. Yeah,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I would think, Rick, you know, since you better never
- 24:18Speaker 1: better in the show before, tell them, tell people what
- 24:20Speaker 1: you do. Know, then we're gonna talk about what you
- 24:21Speaker 1: do in the past. Okay. Uh So, I am the
- 24:25Speaker 1: content community manager for f h F Gear stands for
- 24:28Speaker 1: Fish Hunt Fight Gear. We manufacture the Viinal harness you
- 24:32Speaker 1: wear on the show and a bunch of other US
- 24:36Speaker 1: made hunting and fishing gear. So in some tactical gear.
- 24:39Speaker 1: And then, uh, you studied forestry, you like you answer?
- 24:43Speaker 1: Did you guys meet through the forestry world? Yeah? We
- 24:46Speaker 1: met at penn State mon Alto, which is a branch
- 24:48Speaker 1: campus of the main the main campus UM which is
- 24:53Speaker 1: in mon Alto, Pennsylvania and used to be the Pennsylvania
- 24:58Speaker 1: State forest Academy. Gifford penn Show started it because we
- 25:01Speaker 1: grew up in Milford, Pennsylvania. He started it, uh, and
- 25:05Speaker 1: then penn State bought it turned it into a branch campus.
- 25:09Speaker 1: But all the original buildings on the campus were built
- 25:11Speaker 1: by the original forestry students. Like they would show up
- 25:13Speaker 1: up by train, they would get issued acts, a bunch
- 25:16Speaker 1: of tools, they go to class, they come back in
- 25:18Speaker 1: like Conklin Hall on the campus and everything. They built
- 25:21Speaker 1: all that by hand, all the forestry students. So the
- 25:25Speaker 1: campus still has a very big associate degree program. That's
- 25:28Speaker 1: sort of Seth and I started in the associate degree
- 25:31Speaker 1: UM got our associates in forest technology, and then I
- 25:35Speaker 1: went to Penn State. We both went to penn State
- 25:37Speaker 1: main campus. I finished with a bachelor's and forced management.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Seth switch to agriculture. So, well, what was the draw
- 25:44Speaker 1: to forestry. I swant to be in the woods, and
- 25:47Speaker 1: I thought going into it, I just wanted to be
- 25:50Speaker 1: in the woods. I thought it would make me a
- 25:52Speaker 1: better outdoorsman learning UH, and that was always ultimate goal,
- 25:56Speaker 1: to be like a well rounded outdoorsman woodsman like a naturalist.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Yeah kind of you can say like that, but I'll
- 26:03Speaker 1: just get better at hunting and fishing, you know. And
- 26:05Speaker 1: I thought that would be a good thing. I also
- 26:06Speaker 1: thought it would be easy, like could be something I
- 26:09Speaker 1: can do in college, because I did not. I wasn't
- 26:10Speaker 1: good at math. I didn't wanna you know, do any
- 26:14Speaker 1: like crazy crazy. Uh. I want to say like they
- 26:17Speaker 1: want to work hard in college, because I definitely ended
- 26:19Speaker 1: up working very hard. But you were mistaken with the
- 26:22Speaker 1: easy part. Yeah, that's why I was just going around it.
- 26:24Speaker 1: We get slap in the slap in the face. It
- 26:27Speaker 1: was extremely hard and have way more math than ever,
- 26:29Speaker 1: statistics everything it was. Yeah, and and at that point,
- 26:32Speaker 1: mon Alto which it still does, has a very hard program. Well,
- 26:35Speaker 1: you guys are telling me about the tests where they
- 26:37Speaker 1: take fifty limb buds, leafless branches, sections of twigs, sections
- 26:44Speaker 1: of twigs, lay them out and you got to identify all.
- 26:47Speaker 1: So you'd walk in the laboratory. They be fifty sheets
- 26:50Speaker 1: of paper and on each piece of paper and they
- 26:52Speaker 1: were all distance out so you couldn't cheat off your buddy.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And you'd walk around and no complete silence everything, and
- 26:59Speaker 1: they'll just be a one inch four inch little twig
- 27:02Speaker 1: with just the buds. But what about unlike the pines
- 27:05Speaker 1: and stuff, there be u fascicle like which is the
- 27:09Speaker 1: clump a clump of needles like a five needle or three.
- 27:12Speaker 1: You know, hard pines, well not always. You got a
- 27:16Speaker 1: lot of different types of conifer. Now it's all stuff
- 27:19Speaker 1: native to Pennsylvania since we're in Pennsylvania, but a lot
- 27:22Speaker 1: of the species rupping down that northeast. But like with
- 27:25Speaker 1: the hard pines, you got table mountain, pitch, all different
- 27:28Speaker 1: types like you can it can get a little tricky,
- 27:30Speaker 1: or there be a cone, an armored cone. You know,
- 27:33Speaker 1: the soft pines were easy for us here and that
- 27:35Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania, but sometimes the armored cones, like shortly pine,
- 27:39Speaker 1: table mountain and pitch, sometimes their cones are a little
- 27:42Speaker 1: hard to tell apart. So it would just be that
- 27:43Speaker 1: and you'd have to do family genus species in the Latin,
- 27:46Speaker 1: and I think sometimes it asked like you'd have to
- 27:48Speaker 1: say a fact about that tree. You had to know
- 27:51Speaker 1: all that and then yeah, that was for dendrology and
- 27:54Speaker 1: we had I don't remember on that one. I was
- 27:58Speaker 1: good at the at dendro. I wasn't good at anything else.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I really wish I knew my trees better. I walk
- 28:05Speaker 1: around and go up, that's the tree. We had to
- 28:08Speaker 1: be able to identify how many tree species it was
- 28:12Speaker 1: in like our hundred twenties, like ballpark is what we
- 28:15Speaker 1: learned family and species. And we'd have we'd have like
- 28:20Speaker 1: we would go out so we would do part of
- 28:23Speaker 1: our exams where we would do like field tests, and
- 28:26Speaker 1: like we would walk out into a field. We'd have
- 28:28Speaker 1: these little pieces of paper and our our professor would
- 28:31Speaker 1: point to a tree and we'd have to write it
- 28:33Speaker 1: down and handed to her h and then she'd do
- 28:38Speaker 1: that for I don't know scies. We weekly like that.
- 28:43Speaker 1: How many in your class? I think I graduated with
- 28:49Speaker 1: like nine or eleven or something like that. I started
- 28:54Speaker 1: with third with thirty some in the program, but after
- 28:57Speaker 1: the end of the two years it was only like sixteen,
- 28:59Speaker 1: may be of my associate and then I only graduated
- 29:02Speaker 1: my bachelor's with like six to nine people something. There
- 29:04Speaker 1: was some attrition, very very much. First they first they
- 29:07Speaker 1: dropped like flies because it's hard because everyone did they
- 29:11Speaker 1: pick it. It's weird you guys got that far. Then
- 29:13Speaker 1: chickened out and went into different fields, didn't I worked.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I worked in forestry. Then he went into the military.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Well that was a different like goal. But then when
- 29:24Speaker 1: I got back, I went right into work for pheasants forever.
- 29:27Speaker 1: And then I worked for pheasants forever and then went
- 29:30Speaker 1: out to US for service. And I used to work
- 29:31Speaker 1: for the Game Commission in college. You know your observation
- 29:34Speaker 1: that you thought by studying forestry you could be better
- 29:38Speaker 1: at hunting and fishing. Um, we're having it. We were
- 29:43Speaker 1: talking about that one time with with our beloved Pat
- 29:46Speaker 1: Durkin mhm, and like just like woodsmanship and being a naturalist, right,
- 29:53Speaker 1: and he was saying, Um, he's kind of expressing this
- 29:56Speaker 1: almost like it's unfortunate. He's like, you know, he spent
- 30:00Speaker 1: a lot of time profiling like very effective deer hunters,
- 30:04Speaker 1: like stone cold killers on white tails. You know, he said,
- 30:08Speaker 1: the thing he's found a lot of these guys they
- 30:10Speaker 1: can't tell you what kind of tree their tree stands
- 30:11Speaker 1: hanging in. Really, that like amazes me. He's like it
- 30:16Speaker 1: just like it takes a lot, but it doesn't take
- 30:18Speaker 1: that I saw. I saw one time, I saw a dude. Um,
- 30:25Speaker 1: he's like instant famous does a lot of white tail
- 30:28Speaker 1: hunting in the Midwest. And he was going around like
- 30:32Speaker 1: scouting the property and he was saying, how, um, you
- 30:36Speaker 1: could tell this was a fresh deer rub because it
- 30:38Speaker 1: was low on the tree. Then old deer rub will
- 30:42Speaker 1: be higher in a tree because the tree grows up. Yeah,
- 30:47Speaker 1: And I was like, leave a comment. I didn't know,
- 30:49Speaker 1: I don't, but I was like that man probably knows
- 30:54Speaker 1: his shipload about deer but has no clue how a
- 30:56Speaker 1: tree grows. But it definitely doesn't know how a tree grows.
- 31:02Speaker 1: That's really funny. Yeah, uh, yeah, that's interesting because, um,
- 31:09Speaker 1: we shot the steel broad head into a tree in
- 31:12Speaker 1: our yard and we're a little and you can still
- 31:15Speaker 1: see like a little swell from it there and it yeah,
- 31:17Speaker 1: never change height. Um. That's surprising though, that that's the case,
- 31:24Speaker 1: because I felt like, and I'm sure Seth would agree,
- 31:26Speaker 1: when you learn all your species and then to you
- 31:27Speaker 1: really start getting into like silvics of the species, Like
- 31:31Speaker 1: you can look back that the whole Landscapes of history book,
- 31:34Speaker 1: and you can look at how stuff regenerated. You can
- 31:36Speaker 1: look at stumps, you can start breaking the for it
- 31:39Speaker 1: like we do. We break everything down and stands okay,
- 31:42Speaker 1: group group of trees that is um unique to like
- 31:47Speaker 1: a size species. You can start lumping them together and
- 31:50Speaker 1: you can just create these rooms, like you can actually
- 31:53Speaker 1: create a betting area wide deer betting there. Then you
- 31:56Speaker 1: can see travel corridor and then you can actually see
- 31:58Speaker 1: like why especially with mass producing eastern hardwoods, when you're
- 32:02Speaker 1: dropping acorns and everything, and like we're talking about their day,
- 32:05Speaker 1: like there, the deer will eat white oak acorns before
- 32:09Speaker 1: they start hammering on the wet red oak acorns because
- 32:12Speaker 1: the tannins and stuff. See, when you start knowing that,
- 32:14Speaker 1: you can break it all down and make sense. It's
- 32:15Speaker 1: not just a bunch of green stamps. I think it's
- 32:17Speaker 1: like it's a component. It's helpful, but there's a lot
- 32:21Speaker 1: of ways around it totally. Just like you know, every
- 32:23Speaker 1: day I'm treeing the woods, but be fidgety. I think
- 32:26Speaker 1: it helps. Not patient, but you don't need to, but
- 32:28Speaker 1: it definitely helps. So when uh so you got out
- 32:31Speaker 1: of that whole deal, got out of school, Yeah, and
- 32:36Speaker 1: then I want to get to bout I want to
- 32:37Speaker 1: get to the part about uh no, you know where
- 32:40Speaker 1: I'm going. I asked you as there's a part of
- 32:44Speaker 1: that I had to ask if I could ask, but
- 32:46Speaker 1: I'm not asking that yet. But um, I caught when
- 32:50Speaker 1: we were talking, so I know you were in the
- 32:53Speaker 1: service and your old man was and he was injured
- 32:57Speaker 1: in Iraq. Yes, it's it's so weird that at this
- 33:01Speaker 1: point to be talking to a grown man who's old
- 33:07Speaker 1: man was in the Iraq War was injured in Iraq.
- 33:11Speaker 1: What branch of the services? He in Marine Corps. Yeah,
- 33:14Speaker 1: he was forty he turned forty three in Iraq. He
- 33:17Speaker 1: was old though when he was there. Yeah, he Um,
- 33:21Speaker 1: he did twenty four years. Most of that was in
- 33:23Speaker 1: the reserve. So yeah, but he and that he got deployed,
- 33:27Speaker 1: you know three, Yeah, because it was right after like
- 33:31Speaker 1: I shot my first year when I was twelve. Everything
- 33:33Speaker 1: was two thousand and two, and he deployed in January,
- 33:35Speaker 1: went to Iraq and came back and like just under
- 33:37Speaker 1: a year. So you were twelve and the old man
- 33:39Speaker 1: got shipped off to Iraq. One of one of the
- 33:42Speaker 1: last times we really like had a father son like
- 33:45Speaker 1: experience was when I shot my first year. Yeah, and
- 33:47Speaker 1: then uh, but you didn't see your dad for years.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Then he got super busy, like for pre deployment all
- 33:52Speaker 1: that and everything, and they left in januaryly beginning, yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 1: maybe middle January. I can't remember exactly when he left.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I went to RACK, but he got a traumatic arain
- 34:00Speaker 1: injury there and then came home and from that brain injury,
- 34:03Speaker 1: he had a traumatic brain injury and a bunch of
- 34:06Speaker 1: spinal injuries and he just but like he just took
- 34:08Speaker 1: ivy prof and they didn't they didn't ship them home
- 34:10Speaker 1: after They really didn't know what was going on with him,
- 34:13Speaker 1: and he just got a Parkinson's is um so from
- 34:16Speaker 1: his brain injury. He has a lot. He has mobile problems.
- 34:18Speaker 1: He's mostly in a wheelchair a lot and stuff and
- 34:20Speaker 1: has problems getting around right. And just saw him at Christmas.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Soon when he's doing he's doing pretty good. He with
- 34:26Speaker 1: so it comes and goes, but it's all neurological. He
- 34:29Speaker 1: has a deep brain stimulator too. He's one of the
- 34:31Speaker 1: first people in the US to get a deep sprain stimulator.
- 34:34Speaker 1: So he has it, and I'm pretty sure he was
- 34:36Speaker 1: the first guy to have it installed on his left
- 34:39Speaker 1: shoulder instead of was right because he wanted to still
- 34:41Speaker 1: shoot a firearm and they were all putting him on
- 34:44Speaker 1: He had the right shoulder, and he asked the surgeon
- 34:46Speaker 1: if he could put it on his left so he
- 34:48Speaker 1: could still shoulder a firearm. But it's like a pacemaker
- 34:50Speaker 1: goes down into his brain pulse states and um helps
- 34:54Speaker 1: his uh dopamine levels for mobility and everything. So yeah,
- 34:58Speaker 1: so with that, I yeah, I uh so, then you
- 35:01Speaker 1: felt compelled to go to the Marine Corps. No, no,
- 35:04Speaker 1: it was it was opposite. All I wanted to do
- 35:06Speaker 1: was go to the Marines when I was a kid.
- 35:07Speaker 1: And then I with his mobility and struggle as I
- 35:11Speaker 1: was just being a sixteen year old kid being an idiot,
- 35:13Speaker 1: and I just struggled with that fact. And I was
- 35:15Speaker 1: irritated at A because we had to kind of figure
- 35:19Speaker 1: out what was going on with his situation with the
- 35:20Speaker 1: v A and he couldn't work no more when he
- 35:22Speaker 1: got medically retired and everything. And so I did not
- 35:26Speaker 1: join the military eighteen, which is my biggest regret in
- 35:28Speaker 1: my life, even though I'm glad where my life is
- 35:31Speaker 1: right now, but I did not join an eighteen. I
- 35:33Speaker 1: went to college and did mon Alto, and then my
- 35:36Speaker 1: sophomore year of college, I started having big regrets about it,
- 35:40Speaker 1: and I made the decision to to just join after
- 35:44Speaker 1: call post college. So that did how long? Uh so
- 35:49Speaker 1: I did? Uh? I was doing officers candidate like recruiting
- 35:53Speaker 1: and ended up graduating and I was six months out.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I was living on cess farm, just way to get
- 36:00Speaker 1: like a date to go to officers Can school ship date,
- 36:02Speaker 1: because you don't like you gotta get accepted. And at
- 36:04Speaker 1: this time there's a huge bottleneck. They really slimmed down
- 36:07Speaker 1: how many guys were going officers Can at school. So
- 36:09Speaker 1: I ended up getting impatient and I enlisted, um various reasons,
- 36:15Speaker 1: a bunch of family stuff too. I didn't know if
- 36:16Speaker 1: I can, Like my dad wasn't doing too well at
- 36:20Speaker 1: that point, um so, and I wanted to go infantry
- 36:23Speaker 1: really bad. So I ended up the contract I did
- 36:25Speaker 1: was infantry, but I went reserve. So so then I
- 36:29Speaker 1: did boot camp school of Infantry, and then I put
- 36:32Speaker 1: back in reserving in Pennsylvania and I just did four
- 36:34Speaker 1: years because at the end of the four years, my
- 36:35Speaker 1: plan was I would try to go back officer. But
- 36:39Speaker 1: that's when moving to Montana and that was a better
- 36:43Speaker 1: new Yeah, I want to change that at all. Did
- 36:46Speaker 1: your dad support your Oh yeah, yep, yep, he was Yeah,
- 36:51Speaker 1: my mom supported to. Yeah, but it was you know,
- 36:54Speaker 1: that was at the draft. I was in and left,
- 36:56Speaker 1: so I was when everything was starting to really settle down.
- 36:58Speaker 1: But yeah, no, I was very board. I grew up
- 37:00Speaker 1: in a military family. Almost all the males of my
- 37:03Speaker 1: family served. So talking about when you got like, uh,
- 37:18Speaker 1: when you went through your health christ Yeah, okay, so
- 37:20Speaker 1: this is part Steve really likes. Not that I like it,
- 37:24Speaker 1: it's just something we's just like a thing we haven't
- 37:27Speaker 1: never explored. Yeah. No, So that was a fat kid
- 37:31Speaker 1: always you know, always overweight, um like all growing up. Yeah,
- 37:35Speaker 1: for the most part, I got you know heavy when
- 37:37Speaker 1: I was ten around then and everything all through. But
- 37:40Speaker 1: I was still very active. I got was an Eagle Scout,
- 37:42Speaker 1: did boy Scouts. We did backpacking all the time, fifty
- 37:45Speaker 1: mile backpacks every year. We did a couple of them.
- 37:49Speaker 1: So super active. But in college I got, like the
- 37:52Speaker 1: freshman fifteen, really packed on some pounds and I got
- 37:55Speaker 1: up to two and thirty some pounds. I am five
- 38:01Speaker 1: that is funny, So the military only does he by
- 38:03Speaker 1: whole inch, so I'm five nine on their records, but
- 38:06Speaker 1: I'm five eight and a half. So yeah, they rouned
- 38:08Speaker 1: you up. They round you up, which is good well
- 38:11Speaker 1: because you get a weight cap and I was always
- 38:13Speaker 1: one of the guys that was pushing it. So also
- 38:16Speaker 1: they gave you an extra half inish to help you
- 38:18Speaker 1: out in the weight case. That's usually generally what to do. Um,
- 38:21Speaker 1: I'm sure to think how big that is? So what
- 38:23Speaker 1: was the weight again too, like to mid two thirties.
- 38:26Speaker 1: I can't remember what like the max max pound it was,
- 38:28Speaker 1: but it was in them two thirties and I'm five
- 38:30Speaker 1: eight and a half and in uh five months, I
- 38:34Speaker 1: lost like fifty five pounds just one day. I just yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 1: I made a decision. I was like, this is done.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I'm done doing this and that's all it is. It's
- 38:42Speaker 1: a mental But when you made the decision, what was
- 38:45Speaker 1: your understanding of why it was that it had happened
- 38:47Speaker 1: to you? Not tracking with the quiet? What's your like?
- 38:51Speaker 1: You must have said, like you didn't make a decision
- 38:54Speaker 1: to get thin. You had to make a decision that
- 38:56Speaker 1: that underdo such and such thing like how did you
- 38:58Speaker 1: know what the problem? So and I was thinking about
- 39:01Speaker 1: doing the joining the military. I was like, well you
- 39:04Speaker 1: got like there's weight rags. Everything got to be in shape.
- 39:06Speaker 1: And that's when I made the decision. I was like, well,
- 39:08Speaker 1: if I'm gonna do that, I need to just get
- 39:09Speaker 1: in shape and too. I was never you know, I
- 39:12Speaker 1: always want to be able to run faster and do
- 39:14Speaker 1: all that. So that was just like little all I needed,
- 39:16Speaker 1: and it clicked in my head. I was like, well,
- 39:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it. I'm just gonna get in really
- 39:19Speaker 1: good shape. So I went down got to like at
- 39:22Speaker 1: one point, I got two hundred and fifty eight pounds.
- 39:25Speaker 1: But what are the things you changed? Diet? I got
- 39:28Speaker 1: up every morning and ran three miles because that's what
- 39:31Speaker 1: the p f T was, so I knew I did
- 39:32Speaker 1: work on that timet. Uh, well, I pretty much. This
- 39:37Speaker 1: is where I made some mistakes. I starved myself. I
- 39:40Speaker 1: like there was days some days I would eat a
- 39:41Speaker 1: couple of oranges. Here was that committed. Yeah, I would
- 39:45Speaker 1: get really bad starvation headaches, but I was just so committed.
- 39:48Speaker 1: I was like, I don't care, it's calories. Your calories
- 39:52Speaker 1: burned has to exceed your calories in. And that's all
- 39:55Speaker 1: I did. And I just which definitely could tell. I
- 39:59Speaker 1: think her hurt my stomach a little bit by starving myself, firing.
- 40:02Speaker 1: But I you know, I would eat not like months
- 40:04Speaker 1: of just low, low calories, but there'll be a day
- 40:06Speaker 1: week I'd be like, well, I'm hardly gonna eat any day,
- 40:08Speaker 1: just keep going and I yeah. But it was easy
- 40:14Speaker 1: because once I started seeing progress, I was like, this
- 40:16Speaker 1: is it. I am, I'm getting to that goal and
- 40:18Speaker 1: I did it. So yeah. So it's just it was
- 40:22Speaker 1: a mental decision to lose that weight, that's all it was.
- 40:25Speaker 1: And it's painful, but well what I went out starving
- 40:29Speaker 1: myself and that will get painful and everything, and yeah,
- 40:32Speaker 1: but um, you know, one thing that was pretty awesome though,
- 40:37Speaker 1: was the encouragement people like I knew seth Man when
- 40:39Speaker 1: I lost on my weight and like everyone when they
- 40:41Speaker 1: saw it was like real encouragement. When they haven't seen
- 40:44Speaker 1: you in like a month or a couple of weeks
- 40:46Speaker 1: and then they see you again, you're really working at it.
- 40:48Speaker 1: It's awesome. I was, um, I was still up. He
- 40:51Speaker 1: was easy year ahead of me. So I was, um,
- 40:54Speaker 1: sophomore year, yeah, and you were junior year up at
- 40:59Speaker 1: main Camera sell Us still a month out too. I
- 41:01Speaker 1: remember coming back up to main campus to visit for
- 41:04Speaker 1: the weekend and I saw him. Was like, holy sh it,
- 41:08Speaker 1: like what happened because he just like I hadn't seen
- 41:11Speaker 1: him for months all summer and I came up and
- 41:15Speaker 1: saw him for the first time in like three or
- 41:17Speaker 1: four months, and just like half the size he was,
- 41:20Speaker 1: And I had no clue that he was even like
- 41:24Speaker 1: trying to lose weight. Yeah, I didn't tell no one.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I was just I told every when I came back
- 41:28Speaker 1: to school. But yeah, that was it. So what was
- 41:31Speaker 1: it when you the first time he went back in
- 41:32Speaker 1: the woods, you know, lighter, like feeling fit. It was amazing?
- 41:37Speaker 1: Oh man, Oh yeah, I feel like I could do anything.
- 41:40Speaker 1: It was like running wise and everything in a Yeah, totally.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I would encourage anyone, like if especially in a young person,
- 41:49Speaker 1: to just do it. It's a mental decision. Just make
- 41:51Speaker 1: decision and stick with it. It's gonna like suck, but
- 41:54Speaker 1: do it, because man, once you're fit and everything, you can,
- 41:58Speaker 1: like I'm addicted to running now. I love going for
- 42:00Speaker 1: long runs and stuff and everything. So yeah, but tell
- 42:05Speaker 1: people about the decision to uh expunge your Oh yeah,
- 42:09Speaker 1: because that came up because we're talking about photos. Because
- 42:12Speaker 1: I have a somewhat over Yeah, I ever regret now.
- 42:16Speaker 1: I was so ashamed of those years of being overweight.
- 42:20Speaker 1: How long were the years, well, from you know, ten
- 42:24Speaker 1: ten leven all the way up until college. So to
- 42:28Speaker 1: find years of you know, becoming a going from like, yeah,
- 42:32Speaker 1: that's that's from a pivotal very pivotal. Because you showed
- 42:36Speaker 1: me a picture of a big, huge, freaking bobcat you trapped. Yeah,
- 42:40Speaker 1: and that was a couple of days where I went
- 42:42Speaker 1: to bootcamp. Yeah. Well I was like, you look skinny
- 42:43Speaker 1: as a bean. Yeah, I'll show these some mothers are
- 42:45Speaker 1: on my phone. You should see how skinny I am. Yeah.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Uh but yeah, but then I just destroyed and got
- 42:52Speaker 1: rid of all the I called my fat pictures. I'm
- 42:54Speaker 1: just like, I'm getting rid of I'm burning this part
- 42:56Speaker 1: of my life out really. Oh yeah, And and I
- 42:58Speaker 1: regret it because I rid of a lot of hunting
- 43:00Speaker 1: grip and grins and hunting pictures and stuff I've killed. Man,
- 43:03Speaker 1: I got some seth keep Yeah, he's got once a
- 43:08Speaker 1: yeah digital on his phone. Um, but yeah, I just
- 43:12Speaker 1: tried to erase it because I was like shamed of it.
- 43:14Speaker 1: But now I look him back as I'm getting older,
- 43:17Speaker 1: I don't know, a lot of people say you should
- 43:19Speaker 1: just be proud that you did that, you made that change,
- 43:21Speaker 1: you just keep going down that path. So yeah, it's
- 43:23Speaker 1: tricky because you obviously switched up some habits, created some
- 43:28Speaker 1: new ones that you're really happy about. But to be
- 43:31Speaker 1: so like ashamed of of just yeah, it's I don't know,
- 43:35Speaker 1: it's a tricky. It's a tricky thing, right, Yeah, definitely.
- 43:39Speaker 1: I mean because I feel bad for that thirteen year
- 43:43Speaker 1: old Rick Well what yeah, because I got picked on
- 43:46Speaker 1: and stuff for what just just oh yeah, I mean
- 43:49Speaker 1: yeah I was a fat kid. I got picked on
- 43:50Speaker 1: hey heck yeah, yeah, the judgment that goes along with it. Yeah,
- 43:54Speaker 1: you know, like what kind of picked up Well, you
- 43:56Speaker 1: know general, like you ain't getting picked for a lot
- 43:59Speaker 1: of sports everything like in gym class when you're a
- 44:01Speaker 1: kid and everything. You know. Yeah, so that that part
- 44:05Speaker 1: really makes it's breaking your heart. Really, that's just think
- 44:08Speaker 1: about how I got kids? Man. People are they like
- 44:14Speaker 1: they're they're evil little they don't know better, but they're
- 44:17Speaker 1: just evil little people. Yeah. People are Yeah. No, I
- 44:22Speaker 1: I can't remember like exact things people. I just remember
- 44:25Speaker 1: sometimes being really stressed and upset. There they have moments
- 44:28Speaker 1: of like incredible passion and moments of just wickedness. Yeah. Yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 1: that's a really good way to put with kids. And
- 44:35Speaker 1: then it can happen at the same time, one out
- 44:37Speaker 1: of the left hand, one out of the right. Yeah.
- 44:40Speaker 1: So but horrible little things. Yeah, well, can't be raising
- 44:45Speaker 1: a bunch. So I'm saying just just I'm not. I'm
- 44:48Speaker 1: not and I'm not acting like this is just I mean,
- 44:49Speaker 1: I see them do things to each other. Yeah, I'm like,
- 44:52Speaker 1: what who would like know what I know, would do
- 44:56Speaker 1: that to like someone, even a stranger, little siblings? I don't.
- 45:01Speaker 1: I think when you're young, you don't have you don't
- 45:03Speaker 1: understand like the ramifications of what you say and how
- 45:05Speaker 1: that would like burn and linger in someone's mind or
- 45:08Speaker 1: anything like that. So but then again, I don't know
- 45:11Speaker 1: all that led up to me just feeling like I'm
- 45:13Speaker 1: sick of this and I made my decision. So if
- 45:15Speaker 1: no one did do that to me or like I was,
- 45:18Speaker 1: I wasn't frustrated with my physical abilities, would I have
- 45:22Speaker 1: ever made the decision to change. I don't know, And
- 45:25Speaker 1: I'm so glad I made that decision. What do you
- 45:28Speaker 1: think now about you know, there's this kind of national
- 45:33Speaker 1: dialogue right where this is yep, where you know, it's
- 45:41Speaker 1: I don't know how to tell everybody about what I'm
- 45:43Speaker 1: talking about. I don't know the obesity pandemic except yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 1: the idea that that um like love your body, yeah,
- 45:56Speaker 1: which is like a good advice, you know it generally,
- 46:00Speaker 1: But then there's this this there's this idea, like I
- 46:04Speaker 1: guess within the culture, there's a growing trend to be
- 46:08Speaker 1: like that that that um, beauty was always defined a
- 46:14Speaker 1: certain way, and so it was like this binary thing
- 46:17Speaker 1: like you're like thin and beautiful or you're not your
- 46:20Speaker 1: you're or you're ugly, And there's this this this um
- 46:26Speaker 1: tendency to want to like to take this down, to
- 46:30Speaker 1: have this not be the way that it's not like
- 46:32Speaker 1: that such as you know, this huge percent of the
- 46:34Speaker 1: population should sort of like feel the shame of not
- 46:38Speaker 1: hitting a certain physical stature that society has deemed acceptable.
- 46:44Speaker 1: But at the same time, there's like healthcare professionals who
- 46:47Speaker 1: are like there are serious, like like there are costs
- 46:52Speaker 1: to being overweight, very legitimate cost of being overweight, and
- 46:56Speaker 1: it's not like a beauty it's like beauty not beauty
- 46:59Speaker 1: is sort of like there there's the health component. Yeah,
- 47:02Speaker 1: and I but you know, I'm I'm doing a horrible
- 47:04Speaker 1: job of expressing it. But this is like a thing
- 47:06Speaker 1: you hear about totally. No, I think you did a
- 47:08Speaker 1: pretty good job. Let's explain that and I'll just say
- 47:10Speaker 1: my personal opinion about it. Uh. I think everyone should
- 47:13Speaker 1: be confident with themselves. I think that's big things. We're
- 47:16Speaker 1: all different and it's weirder, and you compare like major
- 47:18Speaker 1: athletes and stuff they run like, just be confident yourself,
- 47:21Speaker 1: but be healthy that and it really pisces me off.
- 47:24Speaker 1: I'll be honest. It when because people don't know my
- 47:28Speaker 1: past when they see me and then they're like, well,
- 47:30Speaker 1: I can't lose because I can't lose weight because of
- 47:32Speaker 1: this or that, and you know, I'm fifty pounds overweight
- 47:35Speaker 1: and it's just never gonna happen, and it's it is
- 47:37Speaker 1: a It irritates me because I'm like, you can it
- 47:40Speaker 1: is a decision because I woke up one day and
- 47:42Speaker 1: I flipped a switch in my brain and I did
- 47:44Speaker 1: whatever it took to accomplish that. And I don't think
- 47:48Speaker 1: I think there's very few people that have a physical
- 47:51Speaker 1: limitation to holding them back from being super healthy. And
- 47:55Speaker 1: I am There's not a day I wake up that
- 47:58Speaker 1: I would go back to that. I love being healthy.
- 48:02Speaker 1: I love being able to go for big the wrong ron's.
- 48:04Speaker 1: I love being able to go to the gym and
- 48:06Speaker 1: actually perform the way I should for my age class.
- 48:10Speaker 1: And I will say, there's there's health ramifications my knees.
- 48:12Speaker 1: I think my knees are gonna give out before they
- 48:15Speaker 1: would have because I was carrying around all that extra weight,
- 48:17Speaker 1: and especially too I was an active kids. I was
- 48:19Speaker 1: going on backpackers. You know, I'd have a big pack
- 48:21Speaker 1: plus extra weight, all that extra weight, and uh, you
- 48:25Speaker 1: can ask Seth he's heard I'll bend, I'll kneel down.
- 48:28Speaker 1: My knees will crack loud, both of them, like, and
- 48:31Speaker 1: I could tell some days I gotta like, I'm definitely
- 48:34Speaker 1: gonna have those are that's the part of my body
- 48:35Speaker 1: I think is going to start failing early with my knees. Well,
- 48:39Speaker 1: let me ask you this as long as round the subject,
- 48:43Speaker 1: Uh the people that goofed on you when you were
- 48:47Speaker 1: a kid. Yeah, Um, do you now think like, thank
- 48:52Speaker 1: god those people were so ruthless and awful. No, but
- 48:57Speaker 1: I also I'm not I did. I'm man, it's kind
- 49:00Speaker 1: of hard. Yeah, no, I don't think that. But then
- 49:08Speaker 1: I also I think because of the subject we've talked about,
- 49:11Speaker 1: I don't think you should totally ignore I think people
- 49:13Speaker 1: should be like, hey, you know, if you have a
- 49:15Speaker 1: friend that's that's overweight and unhealthy, should be like, hey,
- 49:18Speaker 1: let's uh, you should think about taking some steps to
- 49:21Speaker 1: just be healthy. Like you shouldn't ignore it. That's my
- 49:24Speaker 1: That's what I'm getting at, you know, Um, yeah, I
- 49:28Speaker 1: don't think I'm never like thankful. I got bullied for
- 49:30Speaker 1: that part amount you know, life and everything. But I
- 49:35Speaker 1: definitely I don't know. I'm just I guess I spent
- 49:37Speaker 1: in a positive in my mind and you can't just
- 49:39Speaker 1: look negative at it. Do you feel, um to lose
- 49:43Speaker 1: a bunch of weight. Do you feel that you were
- 49:46Speaker 1: more uh moving towards like a definition of health that
- 49:52Speaker 1: you had, or more moving away from like getting goofed
- 49:55Speaker 1: out by people moving towards a definitely in health. I
- 50:00Speaker 1: think yeah, yeah, because like I was in college and everything.
- 50:03Speaker 1: When I was I was like, my eye was fully
- 50:06Speaker 1: well I wouldn't say fully developed, man, but by that
- 50:09Speaker 1: point getting close. But I was myself, and I was
- 50:12Speaker 1: confident in myself to who I was. But I just
- 50:15Speaker 1: wanted to be in shape. Yeah, the goof and probably
- 50:18Speaker 1: stop college college. Yeah, the goof and stop. Oh yeah yeah,
- 50:28Speaker 1: because your old man it was a marine. Was he like,
- 50:30Speaker 1: did he like look like a marine? Yeah? Yeah, he
- 50:32Speaker 1: looks like a marine. Yeah he's yeah, he looks like
- 50:36Speaker 1: a marine. He still he still looks like a marine.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Was there a little bit of rebellion in there? He
- 50:40Speaker 1: thinks it's illegal to not get a high and tight haircut.
- 50:42Speaker 1: So yeah, I can't shake the old half. Yeah but
- 50:51Speaker 1: you were a marine too, right, I don't know if
- 50:53Speaker 1: that came yeah yeah, yeah to the Marine Corps. Yeah.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Um yeah, which my like service was nothing compared to
- 50:58Speaker 1: my old man's. I don't even talk about my service
- 51:01Speaker 1: that much. No, you really don't know, No, I don't, um,
- 51:06Speaker 1: but uh yeah, because what my dad gave up for
- 51:08Speaker 1: the country and everything, I know, like I had a
- 51:11Speaker 1: little a little bit of that, so I don't I
- 51:13Speaker 1: don't talk about it much. Um. He's the one who
- 51:15Speaker 1: got you started hunting though, Oh yeah, yeah I started.
- 51:18Speaker 1: I mean I never I mean we joke about I
- 51:20Speaker 1: don't I don't know anything about sports. I played some
- 51:22Speaker 1: sports because I think my parents were like, we want
- 51:24Speaker 1: you to be accepted, like try this. And all I
- 51:26Speaker 1: want to do was play with guns and go hunting
- 51:29Speaker 1: and fishing. But he got me started and all that,
- 51:30Speaker 1: and I was in the boy Scouts all you know,
- 51:33Speaker 1: all that to my eagle, um, but yeah, my dad
- 51:35Speaker 1: got me started and all that. He grew up in
- 51:37Speaker 1: a hunting family. So can I ask a question that
- 51:40Speaker 1: might be jumping I had too much or maybe not? Yeah, man,
- 51:45Speaker 1: did he did your dad get you into flintlock? Or
- 51:47Speaker 1: where I'm sitting here thinking like how am I gonna
- 51:53Speaker 1: get out of this and get into because I'm super
- 51:55Speaker 1: interested in this, but I know where we gotta go.
- 51:58Speaker 1: So as I'm sitting here thinking like howm I gonna
- 51:59Speaker 1: do it, I was like I don't know if if
- 52:01Speaker 1: people care about Oh no, they care a lot, dude,
- 52:05Speaker 1: but I was. I didn't want to know what to do,
- 52:07Speaker 1: and I was bought ready to hit panic and then
- 52:08Speaker 1: dirt comes in. But that was an amazing transition because
- 52:14Speaker 1: UH started out going small game hunt with my dad,
- 52:17Speaker 1: like watching him shoot squirrels the Twain two, but the
- 52:19Speaker 1: first deer I ever watched get killed. It was with
- 52:24Speaker 1: a flintlock, but the one your dad was kind of
- 52:26Speaker 1: shooting down on it kind of yeah, and I was
- 52:28Speaker 1: kind of down at it too. Um we were out.
- 52:31Speaker 1: So this you can transition this into I don't know
- 52:34Speaker 1: if we're gonna talk about later, but Seth and I
- 52:37Speaker 1: was real solid man. Seth and I both grew up
- 52:43Speaker 1: in in areas of Pennsylvania that had heavy uh coal mining,
- 52:47Speaker 1: and I did. I grew up in School County, the
- 52:49Speaker 1: anthracite coal region, so a lot of hunting was so.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Anthracite coal is hard coal, and eastern Pennsylvania from Scranton
- 52:58Speaker 1: area all the way down to Pottsville, which is where
- 53:01Speaker 1: I was born and raised, is where you can get
- 53:03Speaker 1: anthracite coal. It's hard coal, it's shiny, burns more efficient,
- 53:08Speaker 1: less sash, and more b two us yep, good clean
- 53:13Speaker 1: coal versus by two minutes. But I grew up in
- 53:16Speaker 1: that region. Seth grew up where they mined by two
- 53:18Speaker 1: minutes coal. So he grew up in the ship coal area.
- 53:20Speaker 1: He did. That's right, And you do you feel that
- 53:22Speaker 1: like affected you guys outlook and personalities? What that he
- 53:26Speaker 1: grew up in the ship like ship coal and good coal. No, No,
- 53:30Speaker 1: I think it's shapes. I think I think it's shaped
- 53:34Speaker 1: how we view resource extraction. But I don't think. I
- 53:38Speaker 1: don't think, maybe think any less of uh. But we
- 53:42Speaker 1: always called coal area, Yeah, comparable all this coal on
- 53:46Speaker 1: the on the hills soft coal. Yeah, that's the only
- 53:50Speaker 1: place in the US everything soft coal except for an
- 53:52Speaker 1: eastern Pennsylvan's only place you can get in the U
- 53:54Speaker 1: s is anthrasies hard coal. That's it. Everything else is
- 53:57Speaker 1: by two minutes coal to some level. There's different levels
- 54:00Speaker 1: by tuminus. What's lignite, that's by tuminus. But I think
- 54:04Speaker 1: it's really crappy, but real chromic, real chremy coal. Yeah,
- 54:07Speaker 1: Like I grew up, my grandmother would have coal on
- 54:10Speaker 1: her bookshelves from all her family, like a couple of
- 54:12Speaker 1: her brothers had mines and stuff. And they're like shiny
- 54:15Speaker 1: black diamonds, like they shine. They're all washed off, but
- 54:18Speaker 1: it's real shiny, nice looking stuff. So so when those
- 54:21Speaker 1: guys are goofing now any about your weight, we're like, well,
- 54:23Speaker 1: it's at least these are come from good coal countries.
- 54:28Speaker 1: That didn't ocur to me. That was just normal that
- 54:30Speaker 1: was life. But we always hunted out on a lot
- 54:34Speaker 1: of coal land. Like we always said, down in the strippings, um,
- 54:36Speaker 1: because really strippings, yeah, stripping pits, strippings, that's what they
- 54:41Speaker 1: call it because they're stripped. Minding Ye yeah, right worth
- 54:45Speaker 1: sitting right now right below, UM, I would have regarded
- 54:49Speaker 1: as like you you clarified, it's not I would look
- 54:51Speaker 1: that must be like that must be the mountaintop removal
- 54:54Speaker 1: we hear so much about. But you're like, that's that
- 54:55Speaker 1: doesn't even not technical strip. They they do recontour and
- 55:01Speaker 1: level stuff during strip. Mind, we're close enough to the
- 55:04Speaker 1: mind right now, we're sitting here. Earlier in the cabin.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Then there was a little bit of a shake because
- 55:09Speaker 1: they they must have detonated a charge up there to
- 55:15Speaker 1: move some ground. You guys are hunting the strippings. Yep,
- 55:20Speaker 1: we're ound the strippings. And I probably was like eleven,
- 55:24Speaker 1: maybe maybe tan at this point, and I was getting
- 55:26Speaker 1: a little tired. We're doing mouches, as Doug Darren would say,
- 55:29Speaker 1: but small drives, just with with my uncles there was
- 55:31Speaker 1: it wasn't a fawn drive. Doug wouldn't really agree with that.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Oh he wouldn't is that he's a little stupid about it. Um,
- 55:43Speaker 1: like a mooch. I've argued with dog about this a
- 55:47Speaker 1: million times. In a mooch, which is like a deer drive,
- 55:52Speaker 1: but not in a mooch. It would be that like
- 55:56Speaker 1: there's like a like a blind sitting still hunting component
- 56:01Speaker 1: to it. Okay, it kind of stems from like some
- 56:04Speaker 1: relative of his probably looked exactly like them. Uh at
- 56:08Speaker 1: one point in time it said something like, you know,
- 56:10Speaker 1: I was just creeping along, Yeah, you know, mooching, right,
- 56:16Speaker 1: And it'll be like if you're doing a mooch, it
- 56:17Speaker 1: might be that everybody goes out in the morning and
- 56:20Speaker 1: gets in a blind and their dear blind around the
- 56:22Speaker 1: farm and even the neighbor the neighboring farm, right, Like,
- 56:25Speaker 1: everybody's out there blind and it's scheduled that like we'll
- 56:30Speaker 1: sit till about eight mhm. And then Dave and Bob
- 56:37Speaker 1: are going to get out of their blinds and mooch
- 56:41Speaker 1: along these two different ridges, okay, and just stir stuff
- 56:48Speaker 1: and just gently gently get things astiring. And then like
- 56:53Speaker 1: let's say Dave arrives at some other blind he hadn't
- 56:56Speaker 1: been sitting in. He might climb up into that blind, okay,
- 57:00Speaker 1: at which point Doug gets out and mooches down into
- 57:05Speaker 1: a little bottom real quiet m and in around about
- 57:10Speaker 1: that time, like surely climbs down out of her blind,
- 57:16Speaker 1: you know, yeah yeah, and mooches around the dogs blind
- 57:21Speaker 1: and then deb and it's this whole thing like that.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, okay, So technically we're not doing that. It's
- 57:26Speaker 1: like it's just a little mini pushes, yeah, mini pushes
- 57:29Speaker 1: a little um mini subtle, like not blowing deer out,
- 57:35Speaker 1: but just nudging them, nudging along. My uncle was going
- 57:39Speaker 1: through Connifer cover like we did a lot this whole trip,
- 57:44Speaker 1: and he bumped out two dall when they came running. Well, oh,
- 57:46Speaker 1: I gotta back up. I was tired, say does oh man,
- 57:51Speaker 1: that's you brought up to say dough. Yeah, and it's
- 57:53Speaker 1: a really bad habit. So did you grow up to
- 57:55Speaker 1: say dough where you live? Um, I've things I don't
- 58:00Speaker 1: I don't remember. Yeah, that's the way My entire family
- 58:04Speaker 1: and obviously a lot of the guys that grew up
- 58:06Speaker 1: hunting around how they said it. So it's just it's automatic.
- 58:10Speaker 1: And I don't even think it's regional because we grew
- 58:11Speaker 1: up with people that said it, yeah, do not Bucks?
- 58:15Speaker 1: And does Bucks? And does Yeah. I think it's super common.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I know a lot of people shall do that, and
- 58:19Speaker 1: I don't even catch myself doing it. Like I saw um,
- 58:25Speaker 1: but I was tired. And he climbed up on a
- 58:27Speaker 1: big overburden pile of coal that was all it was
- 58:31Speaker 1: left from years ago and it's all grown up around
- 58:33Speaker 1: at everything. But he went up on it like it'd
- 58:35Speaker 1: be in a stand to get an elevated shooting position
- 58:38Speaker 1: at the end of this conifer cover. And my uncle
- 58:41Speaker 1: book uh two does out and they came running right up,
- 58:45Speaker 1: and one saw me sitting on a stump. My dad
- 58:48Speaker 1: sent me on, hit the brakes and just watched me.
- 58:51Speaker 1: And I remember staring right in her eyes, and I
- 58:54Speaker 1: heard the flintlock go off on and like a foot
- 58:59Speaker 1: to a big shot of blood shot out of her side,
- 59:03Speaker 1: and she ran off thirty yards and piled up. My
- 59:05Speaker 1: dad came down. That was like the first time I
- 59:07Speaker 1: put my hands on a dead deer, and I was
- 59:10Speaker 1: so chomping at the bit to go hunting after that.
- 59:13Speaker 1: And then she feel like flintlock. I mean, my dad
- 59:14Speaker 1: has killed more deer with his flintlock than his center
- 59:16Speaker 1: fire rifle. Yeah, what year did they start the flintlock season? Here? Uh,
- 59:21Speaker 1: seventy three? Checked that sheet front of you. I say,
- 59:27Speaker 1: one second. That page covers the advent of the triple Trophy,
- 59:33Speaker 1: where you get a special trophy if you killed a
- 59:36Speaker 1: deer bearon Turkey in year, which they started handing out
- 59:39Speaker 1: in nineteen sixty six, and then in nineteen seventy two,
- 59:41Speaker 1: mysteriously they ended the triple Trophy program. I really need
- 59:45Speaker 1: to rease I don't know the history behind that. I
- 59:47Speaker 1: just knew was a good idea. For six years at
- 59:50Speaker 1: my hunting camp, there was a few guys that had
- 59:51Speaker 1: their hunting jackets and they had Triple Trophy patches on it. Well,
- 59:54Speaker 1: how do I not remember? This is a damn year.
- 59:56Speaker 1: I was born two years after Jeremiah Johnson. Yeah, so
- 59:59Speaker 1: that was so Yeah. I threw that in on that
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: little thing because I feel like that probably set the
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: stage because that was such a popular movie. Um my
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: parents watched Jeremiah Johnson at your about a year and
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: three months after it came out, and that led to
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: such a weird thought, that's a romantic movie. My mom
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: and uh my mom and dad for their honeymoon. They
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: went and stayed in one of those ice shanties you
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: can live in. Oh, that's spent their honeymoons ice fishing
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: and ice shanty. Do you think it was a scene
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: where he flips the blanket off? Swan that like got
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: your parents? Is that when you're thinking of your charlie?
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: What's that scene she lay after they getting married. She
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: lays down under the blanket naked and then he clips
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: it off and says, lord, um oh they started Muslim flintlocks.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: But it's the only state that has a flint lux. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: so is it? Like? Why is that? Until? What the
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: hell flintlock is? Man? We've covered it so many damn times. Yeah, seth,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: do you do it? You're I'm talking too much, But
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: first tell what a matchlock is, or I could do that,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: but yeah, you tell what? Explain the matchlock better? Time
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Dred's beginning of sixteen hundred's the cutting edge technology was
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: a matchlock. So it was a pan that came out
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: the side of the barrel, held a priming powder and
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: then an arm that would be cocked back and then
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: when the trigger was pulled back, it would The Seared
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: movie would release, and a smoldering rope would go in
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: that and ignite the powder. The problem with that is
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: as you as the rope kept smoldering back, you kept
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: having to push it and make sure time was up
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: far enough and time right. So it's like someone starts
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: to drive or do your drive. Let's say with a matchlock,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: you might light the wick right when it starts, and
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: by when here we come, you'd light the wick. I
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: mean yeah, if they were doing deer drives back then yeah,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: that's probably doing or it would smolder. I'm not sure
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: how like the rate. Maybe it was a super super
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: slow so you can almost hunt for No, no, it
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: would you would want to. Yeah, you're not like sitting
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: there because I think they didn't have any lighters. Right,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: It wasn't a quick igniance. He had to try to
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: take something from a candle or a fire to light.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: That starts smoldering that room. Until this very minute, I
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: didn't know that that's what a matchlock was. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: and then then when the hammer held a burning wick
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: and then pushed it right into the pan, they wouldn't
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: put the wick out when that happened, you know, I
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: don't I don't know I don't know if it did
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: or not. I feel like it probably wouldn't. It would
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: still be smoldering because there's ignition in the pan. It's
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: not like it goes in and cuts off all oxygen
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: or anything and there's nothing. And then that little pan
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: of powder goes ye and then shoots into the side
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: of the barrel through a thing called a touch hole
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: and then ignite the main charge. And it pushed a
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: patch and ball or just a ball because a lot
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: of more smooth boars. Well I think all matchlocks were
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: smooth boars. Yeah, he would throw that ball down the
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: end of the barrel. So that is the bee's knees.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: What was what were the poor folks shooting? What was
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: a bad gun during match lock time? Yeah? I don't know. Yeah,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: maybe not again some sharp little Yesterday's equivalent of the
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: dude that comes up with a laser range finder. Yeah, decides,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: he says, you know what I'm gonna do? Man? What
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: does he do? Sth he comes up with something better?
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: It makes the flintlock. So the flintlock is um it's
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: similar in the way and like how the parts move
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: in a way. There's a hammer, there's a flash pan
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: and then there's a touch hole that goes into the barrel.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: But over the pan there's you I think of like
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: a flint and steel. So on the hammer there's a
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: piece of flint held in by a little vice, held
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: in by a little yeah, a little vice type thing.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: And then over the pan there's a frizzen, and the
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: frizzen is the steel part. So when so you prime
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: the pan, flip the frizzen down over so that keeps
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: that powder kind of dry. And it's about it. The
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: priming is about as much as like when you see it,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: you know in the movies and someone gets a little
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: fingernail a coke or something. It's about like that amount
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: of powder, like a pinch of salt, like a pinch
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: of salt um. The frizzing covers the powder in the pan.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: When you cock the hammer back and pull the trigger,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: the hammer flies forward hits the steel on the frizzen,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: which flips the frizzen out of the way. The the
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: sparks from the flint hitting the steel fall into the pan,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: which causes a little explosion, a little flash in your face,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: which then travels through the touch hole into the breach
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: of the barrel, which ignites the powder, sending the patch
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: and ball out of the gun. Yep, I think it
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: was a good one. Yeah, yeah, depend oh you can go.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: Do we ever work? Does this ever work out? Like
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: remember we were talking about the pig they'll have LENI
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: eat the turkey ship? Yeah? Did you put on Instagram? Yeah?
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I did so people could go find it? Yes, it worked,
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: It mostly worked. Did you see evidence of people going
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: to see it because we talked about it? Yes, And
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: I've received probably fifty messages of people asking me where
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: they could see that video. Wasn't it right there? Yeah,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: it's in Just like I said on the podcast, it
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: will be in the highlights under Texas. But why don't
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: you just put it in the feed and eventually right
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: well put it put it as opposed. Well then then
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: like eventually, you know, someone listened to that podcast a
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: year from now, can go can go to my highlights
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: and they're like right there right on top. Yeah, but
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: that was no one knows about that. That's picky about
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: what goes in his feet there, Ye, there in a
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: way that people couldn't find it. No, it's it's rick.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Help help me explain it. It is easier to it's
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: easier to find it in the highlights than it is
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: in the feet. Well, you listen to me, he has
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: an aesthetic to keep up with Mr Technology over here.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: That's me tapping listen. Well, I'm gonna put the world's
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: greatest hang by your video. Steve will put in some
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: stupid highlight folder. Steve will put it in his seed meat.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I will put it in my highlight folder, right and
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: then meat under p a flint lock right in the meat.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Like when you go in, you cann type in at
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Steven Ronella and you're gonna be served up a Schmorgus
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: board of visual imagery. If you go look, you'll find
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: one of dirt having a great uh a great what's
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: known as a hang fire. And depending on when this
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: podcast comes out, um, don't expect it to be the
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: first video on your feet. You might have to you
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: might to scroll once you know what I said, Shmorges board,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: you're gonna do a bunch of No, you'll be served
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: a Smorgas board of images. But it might be that
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: particular video might be where they put like the lemon
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: uh oh, like as you go through the thing, like
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: you got rolls salad, crutains and baco bits. Right. Then
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: you get into the right then he's like, you get
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: the weird area where you had like cottage cheese and
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: I peaches and peaches, and then you're gonna keep going.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: It's gonna be like a big vat soup and stuff,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: and you're gonna go down and there's gonna be dirt
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: with the hang fire. Okay, that's where you'll find it.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: That's where you'll find on at Steven Ronella. Um, I
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: didn't know you didn't come through on that, what like
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I asked, No, it's there. Fifty people couldn't find it. Yeah,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: well they fifty people have a hard time listening to
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: directions more than more than that. So it'll be there.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: The hang fire. Yea, what the hell are we talking about?
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Hang fires? Yeah? Oh the sound of it. Yeah yeah,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: that's Lauren was saying. Sometimes it goes I feel like
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: best case scenario. There is a small delay, right, No
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: best case scenario. It's just like I mean, it's quick,
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: it's it's yeah kind of right, slight delay, but it's
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: not as slow as most people think though. Old flint lock,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: my old flint lock, which I sold on consignment um
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: had a big delay, and maybe it was like there's
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: all kinds of reasons that could be. It could be
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: like I was using like goofy powder. I didn't have whatever,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: because in a flint lock, when you prime, the priming
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: powder is a finer grain than the actual charge powder.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: I could have been screwing all manner of things up
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: with my old flint lock, where I wouldn't have a delay.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: It would be like, right, my new one is because
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: something about it Petter solely, Yeah, it's good. It said
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: the configuration of the everything that when it goes right,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: it's very fast. It could have a lot to do
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: with the touch hole. You might have might have had
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: a smaller touch hole, were you, Yeah, if you weren't
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: using four F powder too, it's like if you're using
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: three like we talked about because Steve and I had
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: a powder incident while hunting powder out, yeah, where we
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: had to use some charge powder in our pants and
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: I've I've never actually done it, but I always was
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: told if you need to do that, it's going to
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: be a little bit slower because that amber has to
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: go down and it's smolders for a couple of seconds.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: With that bigger grain of powder, just just like you've
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: taken kindling for a fire and trying to light heavy
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: too heavy, like i've kindling or tinder tinder. Well, the
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: reason I think that that might I don't know. I
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: don't think that's why I had that delay is because
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: I remember not realizing they were there was such things
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: as priming powder, and have a hell of a time
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: getting that thing to go off, and then got actual
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: priming powder and got to work way better. But I
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: think I want to establish so in that Sun four
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: they start the flintlock season. No other state had a
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: flintlock season. Don't why? Um was it? Because you guys
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: had a lot of like period like buck skinners, like
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: re enactor community in Pennsylvania. From what everything we can
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: understand what started that. Pennsylvania is a big history with
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: the Pennsylvania long rifle. And everyone always says like the
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Kentucky rifle, but you know long rifles started in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: UM German gun smith's took the really high precision rifles
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: of from German and Swiss gunsmith's and southeastern Pennsylvania has
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: tons of German heritage people moving here and settling. So
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: those gunsmiths brought that really good craftsmanship and mixed it
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: with the English style like Brown Bess long long rifles.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Um made him super precise and then put rifling in
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: him to twist and stabilize that patch and ball. Um.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: So with that, like even if you go to build
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: a flint lock today and you order a stock a
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: lot of and I just did it before he came,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: just to see how often. But a lot of the
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: stocks are Pennsylvania counties, like the Lancaster style stock, the
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: York style stock Burkes Bethlehem, which is a town, not
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: a county. But there's so much um history and heritage
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: with flint locks in the Pennsylvania long right like during
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: that early to mid guns were flowing out of Pennsylvania.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: I think it was seventeen nineteen. Oh Man Merlin was
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: his name, Seth. He's like the gunsmith that's like most
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: like mostly noted for putting rifling and making the flint lock.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: It was like okay, and then up into the semi
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: part there is another gun smith that that had a
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: lot of oh Man like crap man what do you
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: call it, like craftsmen underneath him. And really they started
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: manufacturing on a larger scale. I can't say a large
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: scale like we think of today, but larger scale Pennsylvania
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: long rifles UM, and then gunsmiths from that took that
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: technology down in Virginia, Kentucky, which is where a lot
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: of people say Kentucky long rifle, but a lot it
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: all stammed out of Pennsylvania. So with that, like I
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: grew up with, there's muzzleloader clubs and seth uh, there's
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: one up here, right, didn't you say there's one? I'm
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: not sure about. My one scout master was really in
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: the flintlocks. He would not use the center fire rifle
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: unless he absolutely needed to shoot a deer and he
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: wanted to shoot a deer that year. Um. My dad
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: was really into it. He just loved flintlock hunting. Like
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: I said, he killed more deer um with his flintlock
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: than he did his center fire rifle. UM. And a
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: lot of that came down to time to hunt. Because
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: of the Sunday hunting thing. He would be off around
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: the holidays and the season is after Christmas, UM usually
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: for two weeks. We did have more time. That was
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: a factor. Um. But with that, I just grew up
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: going to a lot of muzzleloader shoots, and there's clubs
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: around here. And from what I could tell from that
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: history is there was a Pennsylvania Federation black powdered shooters.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: I think I'm saying that right, and they were pushing
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: because the archery hunters now had their season, their piece
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: of the pie, and they started pushing then in there,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: you know, early seventies for that to be there to
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: be a designated muzzleoader season. And it's written still in
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: a lot it's a flint law ignition only. It cannot
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: be anything more modern than flint law ignition. We do
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: have an early season in October or Pennsylvania does um
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: uh that you can use modern inlines now, but the
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: post Christmas late season is flint law ignition only, and
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: that early season is dough only. Can't you can't shoot
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: the antler? Uh? The first problem I ran into hunting
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: my first Pennsylvania flintlock season was not one I anticipated.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: The these guns have what's called a that trigger. They're
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: a Hawking style hawk like is that the model? So
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Hawking styles from what I can read, and I'm not
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: an expert on any of this, so, but like my
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: gun is more is a more aft traditional Pennsylvania Kentucky
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: long rifle style. It's a little shorter just because it's modern. Um.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: The Hawking style came later when they started doing um
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: because a lot of Pensilian long rifles were thirty six
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: to forty five caliber, and then when fifty caliber became
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: a big thing in modern rifle flintlocks. Um Hawking was
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: a manufacturer and of a style too. They cut the
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: stock back, shorter barrels, but it usually a lot heavier.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Like you guys can notice my rifles more slim lying
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: than yours. Yours is a lot heavier, which goes to
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: period correct of that firearm from what's that call? Where
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: to hire someone to read while they play with beads?
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: What you stay like? I'm playing palm raider type and
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: playing Yeah, so that's what this is. So you're gonna
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: hear the cock. It it's on. It's on, half cock
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: right now, longer go all the way for it. Okay,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: here's half cock, satisfying closing the frizen. No, I am
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: what do you say activating? I was just saying setting
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: the trigger, so okay at this point, now I'm gonna
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: full cock, Okay, I love those sounds. Now, if I
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: were to pull the this thing has two triggers in
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: the trigger guard. If I were to pull the front trigger,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: I would have to give it a mighty tuggins to
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: go off. It's heavy, a lot of tension in there,
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: heavy heavy thing, a lot of slop that noise, that
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: slop no when I do us there's a big hook
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: shape set trigger which I'm not going to activate the
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: rear trigger. That's craftsmanship. Now, if I so much just
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: look at that front trigger, she might go off. It's
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: probably like mmit, it is scared as sh I mean, still,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: it's gotta be what like a like a two pound pull.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: I think that's one that's under two pounds for sure.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: That's that's around one pound. Now, I had my c
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: Z twenty two trigger done and polished, and I have
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: that problem now and then where I'm just drawn a
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: bead out of squirrel and it would go off prematurely.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: This is a little more scary than when they go off.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: So and here's why. Here's the problem with the stupid thing,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: not not stupid, not in stupid, is that you're fiddling
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: around in there. Mm hmm. So here you are, here
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: comes here. You see a bunch of deer come charging
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: through the brush, and you see antlers, and the rule
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: here is it has to have three on one side.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: And you see that. It's a nice clean eight way
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: legal okay, And your normal thing is just to shoot.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: But now I gotta be like, Okay, I got a
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: lot of little things I need to do in short order.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I need to go like this, I need to go,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: and then I need to like all all these things
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: coming at me. So I do all that, and then
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: I'm kind of like swooping in on him. He hits
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: the brakes and I'm coming in on him, passing from
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: left to right, yep, to eventually settle up and draw
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: a bead on the white of his brisket because he's
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: like handshaking, don't yeah, yeah, He's on top of you,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: and I'm looking around. I've activated my set trigger and
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: my fingers kind of hunting around for the other trigger
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: to make sure I'm in the right spot off to
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: the side of his head, like way off to the side.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: I felt bad walking up And that was my opportunity. Yeah,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: that was that was the only opportunity he had at
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: a buck. And that was your first day if Seth
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: was a good host and guide, yeah, tell yeah what
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: he would have done. He would have known that that
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: was a great opportunity, a great drive. We would have
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: gone and two shitty drives. Yeah he got seasoned. Yeah. See,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I thought I was being a good host, seasoned and
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: got more accustomed to the equipment. He was putting it
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: in the premo spot on the best drive possible to
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: just get it down, at which point we became seasoned
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: and accustomed to the equipment. He would then have said,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: now I got a drive for you, But instead we
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: no sooner like walk out the door and here I
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: am shooting straight straight around out of my I felt
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: bad too, because I felt like I jinxed you a
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: little bit because before we were sighting in the muzzleloaders.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: I even said, as joking, I was like Steve. There
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: was so many times when I was younger and I
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: got my my Petter Soul shoot in the dirt in front.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: Because I grew up. The rifle I got when I
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: was twelve was a single trigger. It's just a Lineman muzzleloaders,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: so I was used to that, and then somewhere in
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: my mid teens, I got my Petter solely with the
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: set trigger, and I shot the ground in front of
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: so many dough because I would. I would get super
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: excited I hit that set trigger and as I'm bringing
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: the rifle up to draw bead like you were, I
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: wouldn't even feel it, but my finger would get too
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: close to that and I'd shoot right in the dirt.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: It didn't even occur. Like we talked all about all
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: the hang fires and this and dance and all that,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: it didn't occur to me till I was leaning on
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: my stone and I'm sitting here looking at this thing,
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: and I'm thinking, like, at what point am I gonna
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: do all this stuff? Mm hm oh yeah. I mean
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: like like when I see the whites of their eyes,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna set my set trigger. And I was like
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: sitting here kind of like obsessing about it a little bit,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: like what was my sequence? Like how is that going
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: to sequence it out? And he thought it all way
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: through and here's my buck. I don't I don't touch
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: my set trigger now until I'm on the in and
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: around the vitals. Seth lifts up, aims, set trigger pull. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: and you you do that after some mistakes. Unless Seth
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: never made that mistake, but I definitely did a bunch
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: of times. My other um mishap was, uh, we went
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: to a spot and Seth had a good little drive
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: planned out, and I think it was Yeah, you and
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: me climbed into. We got into they're gonna push a
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: whole hollow and we're posting that. We're posting. Let's cover
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: off on that real quick. Because I grew up, Yep,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: you do a deer drive and on this deer drive
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: you have pushers and sitters. Oh you called him pushers
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: to push the man pushers and sitters, And I grew
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: up saying drivers and posters and I don't know. The
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: posters are what you hand Yeah, no post that you.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I don't know why, but that's just what everyone I knew.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Because you're driving the guys walking or driving the deer
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: towards the guys who are standing a post. So when
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: you're dropped off, you stand right there. You stand that
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: post until the drive's done. And that's why you're a poster.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: And Seth calls him chasers and watchers. Chasers and watchers. Yeah,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: like the side hill behind camp here, we would I
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: would say, we're gonna chase that side hill. Sure, push
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: it out. Sure, So Rick and I go in and
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: we're the sitters and the pushers are gonna push a
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: whole hollow. And it's a long They got a long
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: way to go. It's a big hollow. So we sneak
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: in there and it's what you guys call game lands.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: Its own by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, and they I
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: was surprised. See they do some food plots. Oh yeah,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: I remember that one truck to pass us and I
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: said it was a food and cover crew. They they
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: every every region has food and cover crews and they
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: all have state game lands they work on and they
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: maintain food plots. Um, they do the stocking of pheasants,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: and they'll do if they have a lot of time,
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: they'll do a lot of t s I timber stand
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: improvement that they do a lot of active management. They
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: do a phenomenal job. They do amazing real active management. Yeah. Well,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: I was just we were walking alone all somewhere, like
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: staying in the turnip field. The deer been digging all
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: the snow out. So we snuck down in there and
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: got in our spot and we sat there a little
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: while in low and behold, I see that a deer
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: is out feeding and has gotten about its bed in
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: his feet. And I wanted to call off the drive
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: because it's coming my way anyway, a little fawn not spotting.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: So I wasn't gonna violate that UH. I would have
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: been in violation of the uh fakes on the second page.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: I would have been in violation of the seventy three
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: prohibition on killing spotted. And it's coming my way, and
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: I'm just waiting, licking my lips, you know. But eventually
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: I see Seth coming and the it had been a
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: wet day, extremely big wet snow all stuck up in
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: the trees and all that wet snow dripping. Everything was wet,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: and this fawn is already enraged. But I can't get
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: a clean shot. But let's see Seth and bound on
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: my way a little bit and stops like very close.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: And this time I'm like, you know, I'm gonna shoot
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: the top it's heart off the way. I'm aimed up
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: on it because any adrenaline over shooting the fawn has abated.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: Because I've been standing there for twenty minutes. I think
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: I was gonna get a shot at it. And I
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: draw a good south beat on it in click, nothing
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: but spark, just spark, no flash in the pan. And
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: I had allowed my when I opened the frizzen up
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: it was like putting in there. I had allowed my
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: thing just to get soaked. She isn't conducive to black powder. No,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: And I observed it, Chris, I observed it, Chris Ridge Pounder,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Chris that one could at this in this moment say, uh,
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: it just goes to show the struggles they put up
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: with in times of your But I was like, it's
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: more like it just goes to show the thing the
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: mistakes they probably didn't make. Yeah, in times of your yep,
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: like they would have been. Man, wet day like this,
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: everything dripping all the time, sitting here, probably be a
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: good time to scrape that junk out of there and
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: put some dry powder in and do whatever it takes
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: to It just didn't occur to me. And I had
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: done a bunch of times, man so checked it. Then
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: I just like got bored of checking it or whatever.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: It's funny like that dear like if he could tell stories, uh,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: he'd be like And I looked up near he was
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: burned down at me and he hit the trigger and
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: just and here I am tell the story. I forgot
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: to keep his powder drack. That fun to be like
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: moral of that story, keep your powder. How hot of
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: a commodity was powder? So that like would they're back
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: in the times of yore? Would they often discard it? Oh? Sure?
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: Or was it like one of those things like well, no,
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: I know people they would dry it back out again,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: and they would make it from scratch and wet and
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: wet it with their own piss. But to dry it
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: down I don't know, Like I probably just depends so
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: much like if you if you're on a long hunt
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: and commodities were scarce, I could picture that maybe you'd
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: foul up it and you'd put it in a little
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: place no one that you're gonna try to rejuvenate it later,
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: and you can try it out, put it back to
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: use again. Don't dry it out with the lighter. Somebody
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: had that bright idea, Hey, why don't you just put
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: a torch to it? Oh yeah, with a lighter in there.
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: Stevie said about like the mistakes they didn't make. Uh,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: that's one thing. Add you know, when you see old
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: paintings of mountain men, and any kind of frontiers. And
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: he's always creating his rifle. You don't have it slung,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: but there's slings on him, you know what. I know, man,
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: And I thought a lot about that, and I never
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: put much mind to it. But cradling it in the
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: crook your arm. Yeah, that's why I hardly ever because
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: my dad never let me. He'd never even let me
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: have a sling on my rifle until I was older,
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: because he's like that lock, you protect that thing. He
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: would keep it tucked, not in your armpit because I'm moisture,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: but just up under like keep keep that arm like
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: a wing over that thing. And then when you're holding it,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: when you're holding it vertically, everything's running up and down it. Yeah,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: water will run down the barrel. Like I said, we
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: used to take on really rainy days which didn't have it,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: and it didn't do that one day we probably should
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: have done that, but take vaseline and we put vasoline
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: in front of the lock, in front of the frizzen,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: so if any bead of water was running down the barrel,
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: it hit that vasoline and shoot off to the side
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: instead of going down continuing into where on the barrel
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: where your touch hole is. But like that's one thing.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: How maybe your powder got wet walking into that stand. Well,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: I had a slung all the time and it was wetter,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: and hell yeah. The funny thing about that day, it
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: was a real wet day. Oh yeah. And at the
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: end of that day I had already had a misfire.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: I reprimed, I I cleaned, took a needle and cleaned
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: out the touch hole, reprimed and had a vicious hang fire,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: which people will find in the main feed at Stephen
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: Ronella on Instagram. They will find that video dirts dirts
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: hanging fire. Uh. And then the other guns didn't go
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: off either. No, And it took quite a do one
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: to get up. Man, it was a wet old day
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: because in the next day everybody's gonna work. Yeah, damn
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: Dale hunt, you gotta stop. And you started putting the powder,
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: the primer powder in when you sit down. You went
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: to hike with the primer powder, started knocking it out
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: of there and then filling it up with sap. But
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: it was just like ridiculously wet. I mean, it was
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: the kind of wet that would been on comfortable even
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: regular hunting, because you just get all that wet water
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: and snow down your facing that all time, I felt
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: extremely humid compared to Montana, which seth and I grew
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: up here and now coming back, I can't believe how
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: humid it feels. But Monday was particularly bad. I was
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: thinking too that I don't really know that um as
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: a neophyte flint lock hunter such as myself, like I
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: would probably be more effective just with my boat. That's
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: not as fun though, No, but no, it's fun to
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: go through experience what I'm saying, Like if you're just
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: like a dabbler who's not even gonna spend like a
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: week practicing, but just like shoot a few times and
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: be like I'm ready to go, Like you don't if
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: you're like if you shoot, if you shoot ar tree
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: a lot, you don't see better just bringing a damn boat,
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: it's gonna go off. That's one thing. Your effective range
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: might be a little men that a little less, but
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: you like at least you know what you're doing. Yeah,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: but your dad was pointing that out. Flintlock season, no
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: people out, No one's out. Didn't see any other hunters.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Even when we went and hunted, we saw one dude.
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: I guess I didn't see him, but a suspicious figure. Yeah,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: I don't know that. Did you see him? No? I
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: never saw Yeah, and he just he was in his
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: truck and as we went down the trail, I think
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: he got out and it was kinding to the left
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: of us. We didn't see him with anything because been trappling.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: But Pennsylvania has a ton of hunters, right what's the
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: the I don't know if that's true right now, but
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: they've kind of always had the highest hunter like hunter
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: per capita. They had the highest number of hunters, like
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: twenty point something hunters per square mile. Two thousand thirteen,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: they had twenty and a half hunters per square mile.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: Highest hunter density in the US five and nineteen. Five
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: hundred and fifty eight was just rounded up, uh, five
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: hundred and fifty nine thousand adult resident hunters. And that
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: figure wouldn't even have caught the three of us because
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: we're non residents. Yeah. Yeah, we are more down from
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: a million. I think in the early eighties it was
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: like a million. That's crazy. A lot of hunters, um.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: I do like the flint lock hunting though, man, Yeah,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: what was your honest like opinion? I know we had
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: a lot of things go wrong. Okay, I go places
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: and one or two things happens. Either go and be like, dude,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: I want to do that again, or I go like
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: that's cool. Um they had that real like like to
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: do that again feeling. Let me ask you this, if so,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: Montana doesn't have any kind of dedicated muzzleloader season or
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: anything like that, but we have weapons restricted areas. Would
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: you if you were going to go on a dough
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: hunt or something in that weapon restricted would you take
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: that flinlocker? Would you be like, I'm just gonna take
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: my bow. I'm never touching that thing again. Well, in
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: keeping with my general philosophy, I would bring my regular
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: muzzle loadera enough my general philosophy of generally speaking, I'm
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: like I'm gonna use whatever like things like whatever the
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: rules are, like the thing that's like generally most effective
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: for the rules. So like when it's archery season, I
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: use like a compound bowl with pins and a mechanical release,
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: right like I don't I'm not out there with a recurve. Uh.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: When I when it's general firearms season, I use a
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: like a center fire rifle with a good vortex scope
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: on it. I carry a laser range finder, right like
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: I generally am um, generally am like goos and things
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: in my favor. Yeah, understandable. I used to set double
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: long springs for beavers and I discovered the MB seven,
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: so uh yeah, So I feel like, but what I
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: did when I was having a weird fan of a
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: weird mind movie about I don't know why was it
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: if I went hound, if I went chasing lions with
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: a body mine, I was like, I should bring this
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: thing out when you shoot the lion out of the tree.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: But then I was like the kind of person brings
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: a flint lock out shoot a lion up tree? Because
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: houndsmen don't like the fetishize the shooting of the line.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: They don't like to make a thing out of it.
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: It's kind of get it down like a lot of
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: it makes them uncomfortable to even use a bow because
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: they're like, the point isn't shooting the thing out of
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: the tree. That's a formality if we're gonna kill one,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: Like the point is catching it. So like acting like
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: there's something going on here that's not going on, like
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: it's in a tree, Like the hunt's over, we caught it.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: If you want it, then we're gonna shoot it. But
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: we're not gonna act like like that's not the thing.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: The thing is that we caught it. So if you said, like,
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: remember my flintlock, you'd probably they're probably a little bit like,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: let's just bring a gun, go for hunting, go over
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: hunting with the flint rock. I'll do something with it.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: I don't know what. Go for hunt. We should just
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: even if we don't ever helpt with it again in Montana,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: can just start shooting. No, I will use it. I
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: like it. I'm going to start shooting it. I'm gonna
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: start Flintlock Shooters Association. Would you would your your hunter
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: dick Son shoot a flintlock? Oh, yeah, because I have
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: a flint lock. I have a percussion cap, black powder pistol.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: Oh he's dying, will shoot that thing. So yeah, I'm
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: gonna have start shooting flint lock for sure. Man. Yeah,
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna have them trained up on the foot lock.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: It's easily the coolest gun to take pictures of the film,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: so much as going on and big sparks and like
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: it unfolds over a long enough period that it's not
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: like invisible to the camera, like you can see all
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: the little steps. It's great. It just feels good carrying it.
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's fun going. And I was. I was
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: talking to Dirt and he was saying that, like it's
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: it's a cool style upon him, like the deer drives
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: because you're like like at one point we're running our
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: assets off, trying to trying to cut deer off, and
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: it's like very active and oh you're not just sitting
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: around waiting. You're like very proactive. Yeah, a lot of strategy,
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: busting your ass to try to kill my first dear
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: to deer drive, did you no, No, No, I feel
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: like I was part of the hunt, actually part of
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: it this time push pusher, chaser, chaser. It's a camaraderie
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: that goes with deer drives too. Yeah, and you can
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: bullshit and stuff. Yeah, afterwards you all meet up and
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: tell stories about what happened, what you saw. So there
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: I was, and you're looking at a lot of tracks,
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: all the animals squirting everywhere. Yeah, we saw a lot
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: of tracks from a lot of different animals. Bob cat, Fisher,
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: else turkey, elk, gray fox, gray squirrel, gray squirrel, weasel.
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Did we figure out what that weasel was mr he
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: has had he didn't turn white. But they these guys
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: are saying some weasels you don't turn white, yep, which
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: I know I didn't. I've never seen the weasel in January.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: It wasn't white. I don't think I've caught him in January.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: But December brown brown. Yeah, there you go. Alright, any
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: final thoughts, Rick, I was just thinking of a Sunday
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: hunting flintlock season. We didn't kind of touch on like
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: how those we talked about Sunday hunting and how we
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: couldn't hunt on Sunday, which was our first day here.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: But I think what drove Pennsylvania's flintlock popularity for that
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: season was no Sunday hunting. Because if you Seth and
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: I added it up um at least years ago before
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: we moved away. If you only took one vacation day
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: and you took off the old original opener which was
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: on Monday for our firearm season, and you bow hunted
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: with no hunting on Sunday, you had five Saturdays and
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: bow season. That sounds right, Seth, like five Saturdays and
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: bow season, the two Saturdays and rifle and the opening Monday.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: You took off or maybe six it was six, I
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: think yeah, because it was nine days, and schools around
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: here typically have Monday, some summer Monday and Tuesday you
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: get off school for the first two days of the
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: rifle season. But if you only did that, you got
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: nine days of deer hunting and then you're done if
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: you didn't buy a flintlock and partake in the flintlock season,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: which most I think it worked out. Just a lot
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: of hunters were off after Christmas, between Christmas and New
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: Year's already, because yeah, so it was just very conducive
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: to getting more opportunity out in the field that you
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: picked up a flint lock. And I think that's what
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: really because you're already getting screwed anyway. Yeah, you're getting
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: screwed on hung days. So this was another way you
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: could try to fill that tag and get out there.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: And it was fun. Like we just talked about the camaraderie. Yeah,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: I just you know, I always thought it was a
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: blast going out there with a big crew and sending
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: a lot of shots and missing. I did a lot
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: of missing when I was younger, that's for sure. But
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: I don't know, I think it's neat that are you know,
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: one aspect of how opportunity was taken away, maybe drove
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: enthusiasm for another opportunity that Yeah, South got anything you
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: want to add, Concluders, um man, I'm just excited to
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: have everyone here at the family camp Cuboos Hallo camp.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: A lot of good memories in this place, and it's
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: cool to be able to add you guys to the
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: memory bank, you know, hunting out of this place. We
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: never took that picture, no, man, we could probably do
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: one inside here. There you go, all right, everybody, thank
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: you uh for joining and Rick, thanks thanks for sharing. Yeah,
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: I know I felt like I did all out of
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: talking this. Yeah, I feel kind of bad for listening.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: So man, we covered some ground. Yeah, but thanks to
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: you Steve for let me come along on this trip.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: It was pretty exciting to being back at this camp
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: and getting a shoot flint locks again. We'll do it again.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: We'll come out here and catch a fisher. Well, I
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: like it trapping in there too, squeeze it in Okay, alright, body,
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: thanks a lot. St
