Latest / Peptides Weekly / Ep 6: Thirty-nine percent of GLP-1 users reported nail detachment, versus nine percent of controls.
Transcript
- 0:0039% of glp-1 users reported nail detachment versus 9% of controls. This is Peptides Weekly, episode
- 0:076. Education and evidence, never-dosing advice. After that comparison, a surgery record, a
- 0:13petition on unapproved peptides, a loophole fight, a mouse result, and this week's look
- 0:18at research use products. Charles Taib's group brought a cross-sectional comparison, not
- 0:24a randomized trial to the European Academy of Dermatology and Veneriology Congress 2026.
- 0:30Lab Roots reports that they compared 575 GLP-1 users with 1,329 people who had obesity or type-2
- 0:39diabetes and had never taken the drugs, drawn from France, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico.
- 0:45Discaleration showed up in 46% of users and 17% of controls, and any nail disorder in 66% versus
- 0:5353%.
- 0:54Those gaps for detachment and discoloration stayed about two to three times as large, when
- 1:00the analysts kept only people who had lost weight, and again after skin disease and nutritional
- 1:05shortfalls were taken into account.
- 1:07The same people reported unusual hair loss at 50% versus 34%.
- 1:12Thinner hair at 42 versus 19, hair loss starting after treatment at 26 versus 12, and scalp redness
- 1:20about three times as often, often with itch, redness, or scaling.
- 1:24Tayyip called the association clear and said not everything that happens on a GLP1 is
- 1:29caused by the drug.
- 1:31About half the users said their nail trouble began before the medicine.
- 1:35Josephine Tolin, an anesthesiologist at McGovern Medical School at UT Health Houston, presented
- 1:41an observational record study on October 18th at the anesthesiology meeting in San Diego.
- 1:46Yahoo's account says the epic cosmos pull covered elective US operations from January
- 1:522016 through December 2024 only cases longer than 60 minutes with at least a day in hospital.
- 2:00That pool held 2,8,601 patients and 145,610 of them about 7% were on a GLP1.
- 2:10After matching the users had 11% lower odds of a combined heart outcome and 8% lower odds
- 2:16of a combined infection outcome.
- 2:18The heart bucket mixed heart attacks, heart injury, strokes, and deaths.
- 2:22And the infection bucket mixed wound infection, urinary infection, pneumonia, and sepsis.
- 2:28So those odds do not belong to any single event.
- 2:31Emergencies, short cases, and same-day discharges were left out.
- 2:35A tighter match of 114,249 users, and 360,168 non-users, adjusted for diabetes and earlier
- 2:45opioid and NSAID use, put major heart complications at 1.0% versus 1.1%, and infections at 4.9 versus
- 2:555.3%. The partnership for safe medicines filed a citizen petition on October 16, a regulatory
- 3:02request rather than a trial. It asks the Food and Drug Administration to block compounding by any
- 3:08route of seven unapproved peptides, BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, MOT-C, MEDEL-TIDE, SEMax,
- 3:18and Epitalon, and to set aside a July advisory vote.
- 3:22Agency scientists had recommended against all seven.
- 3:26The committee voted to allow six, and the petition says new members had financial ties
- 3:30to the peptide business, and that the meeting broke federal conflict rules.
- 3:34Examples Executive Director Shabir Imber Safdar said the scientists found no adequate characterization,
- 3:40extremely limited safety data, and no meaningful human evidence.
- 3:45Briefing papers said none of the seven had been adequately tested in human trials.
- 3:49The Alliance for Pharmacy compounding said in September 2026 that 503A pharmacies may not
- 3:55legally compound them now, and licensed pharmacies are selling them anyway.
- 3:59PSM bought several and four pharmacies in Texas and Pennsylvania compounded them and shipped
- 4:05them to California within 45 days.
- 4:08The filing also says the FDA has reports of two deaths after illegally compounded Reda
- 4:13Trutide, a separate unapproved product.
- 4:17A bipartisan group of lawmakers is pressing the FDA to shut a loophole used to import knock-off
- 4:22Reda Trutide, stat reported, and that push is a request, not new trial data.
- 4:28Retotrutide is an investigational obesity drug from Eli Lilly, so a knock-off import
- 4:33is not an approved medicine.
- 4:35Semiglutide and Tedu-glutide reduced immune-driven gut injury and mice, news medical reported,
- 4:41and a mouse result is not a human result.
- 4:44Semiglutide is a GLP1 receptor agonist, and this animal finding does not create a new human
- 4:49use.
- 4:51Away from the drug studies, TikTok is blocking peptide searches, EEW magazine reports, hospitals
- 4:57in New South Wales are seeing a surge in peptide-related presentations, the New England Times reports.
- 5:04Peptide Semiglutide sold without a prescription is this week's spotlight,
- 5:08and a public health reports paper says a legal loophole lets people buy it while the selling
- 5:12sites skip both the supplies and the guidance. That label is a sales description. It is not a
- 5:18regulator's finding that anyone checked identity, strength, sterility, or a human benefit.
- 5:23From September 1, 2025 through January 30, 2026, the team watched college students at the University of Connecticut and older adults try the preparation after searching online.
- 5:3520 adults took part, 12 men and 8 women, mean age 40, with a wide age spread. They were handed semi-glutide vials, diluent and supplies, and scored on 34 steps.
- 5:46This was not a treatment study, weight, glucose, and symptoms were not the outcome.
- 5:51Completing the steps was, they got 15 of the 34 steps right.
- 5:56The average score was 44%, and the spread around that average was 50%age points, so some
- 6:02people managed far more of the sequence than others.
- 6:05The mistakes lined up with a wrong dose, a needle stick, or an infection.
- 6:09Confidence sat at 2.3 out of 5 before the demonstration, and 1.9 after it.
- 6:14That dip was not statistically significant.
- 6:17People were unsure at the start and still unsure at the end.
- 6:20And most steps were still missed.
- 6:22The authors say untrained adults with no experience in injecting medicines could face a high risk
- 6:27of harm if they tried a self-administered gray market peptide semi-glutide from internet instructions
- 6:32alone.
- 6:33They also want a larger, more mixed group and the same test on other peptides sold without
- 6:38a prescription.
- 6:39Twenty people do not map the whole market.
- 6:41A 2026 narrative review in curious widens the frame, and it is not a trial and it enrolled
- 6:47nobody.
- 6:48It calls unregulated peptide use a public health problem carried by digital promotion.
- 6:53It also says peptide medicines have real roles when they are developed, prescribed, made,
- 6:58and watched through regulated paths.
- 7:00The promotion it describes aims experimental or weekly evidence peptides at fat loss, recovery,
- 7:07looks, cognition, performance, and longevity.
- 7:09The chain it traces runs through online promotion, gray market access, self injection, stacking, informal titration, uncertain product quality, muddy rules, and weak adverse event tracking.
- 7:23Stacking in that account means using more than one of these products together.
- 7:27Informal titration means changing the amount without a clinician.
- 7:31Those are descriptions of the sales culture, not a method.
- 7:34The review's worry is not legitimate peptide medicine.
- 7:37It is people experimenting with products whose identity, purity, potency, sterility, and safety are uncertain.
- 7:44A label can name a peptide while the vials' contents, strength, and cleanliness stay unknown.
- 7:50The review did not test a product, so it establishes no contamination rate.
- 7:54What it does establish as a narrative review is that those uncertainties sit on the same path as home injection and thin safety reporting.
- 8:02Regulated therapy in these sources is the path of development, prescription, manufacture,
- 8:08and monitoring.
- 8:09A loophole purchase of peptide semaglutide is not an approval to prepare and inject it
- 8:13at home.
- 8:14Neither paper shows that gray market peptides cause fat loss, faster healing, clearer thinking,
- 8:20or longer life.
- 8:21The 20-person exercise measured steps and confidence, not a health outcome.
- 8:26A low score speaks to handling risk, not to whether the peptide works.
- 8:29The review does not count how often products are mislabeled or harmful. It's
- 8:34called for clinician awareness, adverse event reporting, quality checks, clearer digital
- 8:39warnings, and proportionate oversight is a recommendation. Not proof those safeguards
- 8:44already work. One thing worth knowing is that a cross-sectional Congress comparison can
- 8:49tie GLP1 use to more nail and hair complaints without showing the drugs cause them. Also worth
- 8:56knowing, a surgical record analysis can link GLP1 use to slightly lower odds of combined
- 9:01heart and infection trouble after planned surgery.
- 9:04And that small gap in match charts is not proof the drug's protective person heading
- 9:08to an operation.
- 9:10And a small observed test can show untrained adults missing most steps with gray market peptide
- 9:15semi-glutide, which is a handling risk outside a prescription pathway, not evidence those
- 9:20products treat anything.
- 9:22That's peptides weekly.
