- 0:09Speaker 1: Oh, here he is, Parlay Pap himself, Jonathan Papavon joining.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Us right now.
- 0:14Speaker 1: The nice nice get up the Mississippi state shirt for
- 0:17Speaker 1: Bucks show Walter, who is just missing you, Pap.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good to see you. So here's what we're gonna do.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We're gonna talk like Yank's Red Sox, some of that
- 0:23Speaker 1: stuff first, and then we're gonna get to some other
- 0:24Speaker 1: topics with you too, including Otani and what Jose Soriano
- 0:28Speaker 1: has been doing so far for the Angels.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Let's let's start with the Red Sox.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We have to what do you think of you know,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Yankee suck chance while they're getting dusted by the
- 0:37Speaker 1: Yanks so far this week.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah, well, first of all, it's nice if falling meet you, Pilar.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Good to meet you, brother, and to meet you going
- 0:45Speaker 3: to be back on the ft program. Look, man, that's
- 0:49Speaker 3: just Boston fans at its finest, I believe. But look,
- 0:55Speaker 3: at the end of the day, there are problems across
- 0:58Speaker 3: the board, and I think the Yanks are just exposing
- 1:01Speaker 3: them at will right now. You know, it was like
- 1:07Speaker 3: the other day, I think it was it was last night. Yeah,
- 1:12Speaker 3: I mean I was watching the game and I just
- 1:14Speaker 3: went outside of smoke a cigarette real quick, and by
- 1:17Speaker 3: the time I got back in, like our lineup had
- 1:20Speaker 3: come up, we were already back on the field. I
- 1:22Speaker 3: think it was like two minutes and eight seconds that
- 1:26Speaker 3: we went through the lineup, I mean three outs. So
- 1:29Speaker 3: I was like, God, what is happening? But it's a
- 1:33Speaker 3: bad deal right now, man.
- 1:34Speaker 4: And to be honest with you, I didn't even expect this.
- 1:38Speaker 4: I did not expect to see this.
- 1:41Speaker 3: But all phases of the game, all three phases of
- 1:43Speaker 3: their game right now are are really really struggling. And
- 1:48Speaker 3: anytime you have that appen, you're going to be in
- 1:50Speaker 3: the bottom cellar of the Al East, especially in the
- 1:54Speaker 3: Al East, and much less any other division.
- 1:57Speaker 5: And I got two closing questions for you. The first
- 2:00Speaker 5: one is just how impressive is a world as Chapman,
- 2:03Speaker 5: what he's been able to do at his age, the longevity,
- 2:07Speaker 5: What do you got on that?
- 2:09Speaker 4: Man?
- 2:09Speaker 3: I don't know, Polar, it's my boggling to me. Man,
- 2:12Speaker 3: I don't know if you've ever seen this guy up
- 2:15Speaker 3: close to personal?
- 2:16Speaker 4: Have you ever? Yeah, I've seen him. He's a he's he's.
- 2:20Speaker 5: He's an avatar.
- 2:21Speaker 4: He's an avatar. He's like one of those. He's like
- 2:25Speaker 4: Fanos or something.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Bro It's it's unbelievable and he gets after it every day.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And you know, I used to pride myself on being
- 2:35Speaker 3: one that, you know, play hard, work hard, and be
- 2:38Speaker 3: the first one in the gym, last one out.
- 2:40Speaker 4: And you know, he's just.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Really one of those ones that his work ethic is
- 2:45Speaker 3: far superior than than anyone else.
- 2:48Speaker 4: And so I do believe that that's the reason why.
- 2:52Speaker 3: You know, at thirty eight years old, I believe he's
- 2:54Speaker 3: thirty eight being able to do what he's doing today
- 2:58Speaker 3: and still be able to continue what he's doing since.
- 3:01Speaker 4: He was twenty three years old.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And you know, I had a good chat with him
- 3:06Speaker 3: the other day. I happened to be in Boston when
- 3:08Speaker 3: he was there, and he passed me up on the
- 3:10Speaker 3: all time saves list and I asked him, I said, man,
- 3:15Speaker 3: you know, what what do you do to stay in
- 3:17Speaker 3: such good shape? And you know, when he's broken English,
- 3:20Speaker 3: he said, he good lift a lot of weights and
- 3:23Speaker 3: so you know, he's obviously doing something right, you know.
- 3:28Speaker 3: So for me, it's it's it's great to see that
- 3:31Speaker 3: and I wish him nothing but success because you know,
- 3:34Speaker 3: he's He's been through some struggles in his career on
- 3:37Speaker 3: and off the field, But to me, the people that
- 3:41Speaker 3: are able to overcome them, and he's been one to
- 3:43Speaker 3: overcome them are really the ones that become great and
- 3:47Speaker 3: I applaud him on it.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Yeah, speaking of struggles, I don't know how familiar you
- 3:52Speaker 5: are with the closing situation in Toronto right now. There
- 3:55Speaker 5: is a chance that they're going to remove Jeff Hoffman
- 3:57Speaker 5: from the closing situation. What's one of your thoughts on
- 4:00Speaker 5: that as a very successful closer, is there were a
- 4:04Speaker 5: time when you could take a guy out of that
- 4:07Speaker 5: closing situation, put him in some different situations to allow
- 4:10Speaker 5: them to be comfortable. What would you do if you
- 4:12Speaker 5: were the Toronto Blue Jays. Do you just ride him
- 4:13Speaker 5: out as your closer you signed him to be your closer,
- 4:16Speaker 5: or is there some benefit of taking a guy out
- 4:18Speaker 5: of that role, giving him a little bit of a breather.
- 4:21Speaker 5: I tried to compare it from like a hitter standpoint.
- 4:24Speaker 5: When a hitter struggles, who's maybe your leadoff guy. You
- 4:26Speaker 5: can move him down in the lineup where it's maybe
- 4:28Speaker 5: a little bit less important. As a closer, you don't
- 4:30Speaker 5: really get that option.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's a great point because you know,
- 4:36Speaker 3: all closers are built a little bit differently, and their
- 4:40Speaker 3: routines are just slightly different than everybody else is in
- 4:44Speaker 3: the bullpen just because they have the last out, the
- 4:47Speaker 3: hardest outs to get in the game. But you know,
- 4:51Speaker 3: I think communication is the biggest key pillar, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 3: with with with not just your closers, but with anybody.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Even if it's a guy struggle, like you said, even
- 5:01Speaker 3: if it's a guy struggling in the lineup.
- 5:02Speaker 4: You move him down.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Hey, let's get him in the office, Let's talk to him,
- 5:06Speaker 3: Let's tell him what's going on. Let's try to number one,
- 5:10Speaker 3: build his confidence. Like let's let's say, hey, this is
- 5:12Speaker 3: not a reason to say, hey, we don't believe in
- 5:16Speaker 3: you anymore. We just want to get you back to
- 5:19Speaker 3: where we know that you can be and the great
- 5:22Speaker 3: player that you can be. And so I think that's
- 5:26Speaker 3: the biggest key is communication. But yeah, Toronto, in my opinion,
- 5:31Speaker 3: they've got to do something man, whether it's you know, hey,
- 5:35Speaker 3: let's let's give you a couple of nights off and
- 5:38Speaker 3: and and then you know, let's see if we can
- 5:41Speaker 3: put you back in that role or if a couple
- 5:43Speaker 3: of nights off it and the way they want to go, Hey,
- 5:46Speaker 3: let's move you to the eighth or the seventh and
- 5:48Speaker 3: get you some some.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Outs that aren't necessarily as hard to get.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Get your confidence back up, man, because as a closer
- 5:56Speaker 3: and as a bullpen guy, confidence man, you know as.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Well as I do, and not relievers or booping guys.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Confidence is the.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Biggest key in this game, man, because you play so
- 6:06Speaker 3: many games and your confidence is gonna get beat up
- 6:09Speaker 3: every now and then, and it's.
- 6:10Speaker 4: How do I keep that confidence in myself?
- 6:14Speaker 3: Well, for me, it was usually like go out, have
- 6:16Speaker 3: a nice dinner, drink, drink a bottle of wine or something,
- 6:19Speaker 3: relax and you.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Know, just chill out.
- 6:21Speaker 3: But you know some guys don't do that, so it's like,
- 6:25Speaker 3: how do I find that confidence back? And you know,
- 6:28Speaker 3: Schneyder's got a real triggery situation on his hands.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Is not easy things to manage.
- 6:34Speaker 3: So hopefully he can manage it in the right way,
- 6:38Speaker 3: because I do believe he is a great manager and
- 6:40Speaker 3: he knows the pulse of his team, so he's gonna
- 6:43Speaker 3: know what to do and the best option, you know,
- 6:45Speaker 3: for hoff and what to do.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Support for today's episode comes from Square, and they've got
- 6:51Speaker 1: big news. During squares bi annual Releases event, they launched
- 6:54Speaker 1: a wave of innovative new tools to help local businesses
- 6:57Speaker 1: run faster, smarter, and more profitably. Square is awesome. Around Orlando,
- 7:01Speaker 1: where AJ and I live, we go to the farmers'
- 7:03Speaker 1: markets around town. I go to the one near Lake Iola.
- 7:06Speaker 2: It's awesome. I use Square to pay with my phone.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I get the receipt right away. It's great.
- 7:10Speaker 6: And so many businesses, not just small businesses, uses. So
- 7:13Speaker 6: many restaurants and businesses I walk into, not only in Orlando,
- 7:16Speaker 6: but all over the country have these and you just
- 7:19Speaker 6: use your credit card, pops out a receipt, emails it
- 7:22Speaker 6: right to you. It's so fast, it's so efficient, it's
- 7:25Speaker 6: so hassle free. It's one of the great things that
- 7:27Speaker 6: you have going.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Square launched its most powerful tools yet, designed to give
- 7:31Speaker 1: local businesses a competitive edge without the complexity. If you're
- 7:34Speaker 1: ready to sell smarter, run faster and stress less right now,
- 7:37Speaker 1: you can get up to two hundred dollars off Square
- 7:39Speaker 1: hardware at Square dot com, slash Go, slash foul. That's
- 7:42Speaker 1: Square dot com, slash Go, slash foul, run your business
- 7:46Speaker 1: smarter with Square get started today.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:49Speaker 5: I think he sent his presser yesterday that they were
- 7:52Speaker 5: going to take today's off day to kind of assess
- 7:55Speaker 5: the situation. He didn't want to make a rash decision.
- 7:59Speaker 5: He said he was going to have a sit down
- 8:00Speaker 5: with Hoffmann. I think that's to your point, is the
- 8:02Speaker 5: best thing to do in this situation is just communicate
- 8:05Speaker 5: with the guy. Just let him know, maybe it's temporary,
- 8:07Speaker 5: let's get your confidence back.
- 8:09Speaker 4: We believe in you.
- 8:09Speaker 5: And that's the other thing about guys in the bullpen too,
- 8:12Speaker 5: as you know, is you may be removed from that
- 8:14Speaker 5: ninth inning rule, but the outs that you're going to
- 8:17Speaker 5: get in the game are still important.
- 8:18Speaker 4: You can't just bury this guy.
- 8:19Speaker 5: You can't just shit on him completely. Like he still
- 8:22Speaker 5: has to get outs for your team. It just might
- 8:24Speaker 5: not be the last three. But I wanted to ask
- 8:26Speaker 5: you about Yankees merchandise being sold in Fenway Park. Did
- 8:30Speaker 5: you ever think you would see that happen?
- 8:33Speaker 3: No? I did it, man. In fact, you know, you
- 8:37Speaker 3: know it's bad.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Like so so my son.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Every time I go up to Boston, he's like, yeah,
- 8:44Speaker 3: get me this jersey, give me that jersey. You know
- 8:47Speaker 3: he last time I went, it was a Roman Anthony
- 8:49Speaker 3: jersey he wanted.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Well.
- 8:52Speaker 3: About two days into the trip, he texts me, Man,
- 8:56Speaker 3: give me a Connerly Early jersey.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Oh, I'm done with I'm done with Anthony. He sucks.
- 9:03Speaker 4: And I said, you know what, bro, I said, you
- 9:05Speaker 4: sound like all the rest of the fans.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Man, I said, I'm getting you an Anthony jersey. And
- 9:10Speaker 3: you need to stick with him, man, because if he's
- 9:12Speaker 3: your boy, you need to stick with him. And now
- 9:15Speaker 3: they're resorting to New York Yankees merchandise. But hey, I
- 9:19Speaker 3: guess it's wherever you can make a dollar.
- 9:22Speaker 4: They're going to make a.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Dollar because maybe by the end of the season they
- 9:26Speaker 3: won't be selling seats out for sure in my opinion.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Hey, while we're on the Yanks for a moment, here, Pat,
- 9:34Speaker 1: did you see how Max Freed ditched the full wind
- 9:37Speaker 1: up midgame and the note from map Blake, the pitching
- 9:41Speaker 1: coach there he said, not working when you're going to
- 9:43Speaker 1: cut it out for whatever reason this year? Oh, and
- 9:45Speaker 1: this is what Freed said, I've walked a ton of
- 9:47Speaker 1: guys in the wind up, haven't walked anyone in the
- 9:49Speaker 1: stretch so he just said, you got to suck up
- 9:52Speaker 1: your pride and say whatever's working, that's what you've got
- 9:54Speaker 1: to do. So he made that adjustment and game and
- 9:56Speaker 1: of course I mean he freaking shoved.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Yeah, dude, that's that's I've been through that exact same situation.
- 10:04Speaker 4: You know, I first came up as a starter, started
- 10:07Speaker 4: for four games, and then I went to the bullpen.
- 10:10Speaker 3: But that that, to me, is really really hard to do,
- 10:17Speaker 3: and and and and for him to be able to
- 10:20Speaker 3: do that is phenomenal. And I saw the same thing,
- 10:23Speaker 3: but you know, to to recognize that number one, hey
- 10:27Speaker 3: I gotta switch something up mid game, that's pretty impressive man.
- 10:33Speaker 3: You know, normally pitchers don't do that. Normally pitchers are taken,
- 10:37Speaker 3: especially starters. So like a starter will take that like
- 10:40Speaker 3: into his side day or something like that and say, hey,
- 10:43Speaker 3: let me let me tweak this this wind up, or
- 10:46Speaker 3: let me tweak.
- 10:47Speaker 4: This pitch a little bit.
- 10:49Speaker 3: And for him to be able to do it mid
- 10:51Speaker 3: game is really impressive to me. But you know, for
- 10:56Speaker 3: him to have that kind of athletic ability shows just
- 10:58Speaker 3: what type of picture he is and for the pitching
- 11:02Speaker 3: coach to be able to allow him to have that
- 11:06Speaker 3: kind of freedom to just do that says a lot too,
- 11:10Speaker 3: you know, because a lot of times pitching coach would
- 11:13Speaker 3: be like, hey, man, what the hell you doing. Man,
- 11:14Speaker 3: let's let's let's keep it here, let's keep it the same. Well,
- 11:18Speaker 3: you know, that just shows you that he allows Max
- 11:20Speaker 3: Freed to go out there and be Max Freed, and
- 11:25Speaker 3: for him to notice that during the right during the
- 11:28Speaker 3: middle of the game is impressive. I remember for myself
- 11:32Speaker 3: there were very few times that that happened with me,
- 11:34Speaker 3: and and Veritech usually was behind the plate, and there
- 11:38Speaker 3: was a few times where like, I wouldn't want to
- 11:40Speaker 3: throw my split finger into lefties in case it leaked
- 11:44Speaker 3: over the plate down and into a lefty more and
- 11:47Speaker 3: him take me deep. And there was a time where
- 11:52Speaker 3: guy who was it, lefty Japanese player Yankees, oh man,
- 11:58Speaker 3: I forget his name, but anyway, made.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Me throw it to him a bunch of times.
- 12:03Speaker 3: And then shortly after that, well, hell, I started throwing
- 12:06Speaker 3: my splip finger in trying to backfoot lefties with it
- 12:10Speaker 3: up and in in different types of situations to lefties.
- 12:14Speaker 4: So you know, I don't think this will be something that.
- 12:19Speaker 3: He will, you know, continue to do is making these
- 12:22Speaker 3: you know this mid game adjustment. I think he's gonna say, hey,
- 12:28Speaker 3: I'm just gonna now start to run with this. It
- 12:30Speaker 3: worked for me against the Red Sox. My next start,
- 12:33Speaker 3: I don't think I'm gonna go wind up. I'm gonna
- 12:34Speaker 3: tweak it back to you know this this half you know,
- 12:38Speaker 3: man on base or I really don't know what you
- 12:41Speaker 3: call it, but I think he's gonna keep it the same.
- 12:45Speaker 2: God.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know if you heard our are part
- 12:52Speaker 5: of our conversation with Buck earlier, but we were talking
- 12:55Speaker 5: about what happened to the middle relief guy, the long
- 12:57Speaker 5: relief guy. Just take you know how important was that
- 13:01Speaker 5: long relief guy to you know, a guy like you
- 13:03Speaker 5: at the back of the bullpen that you didn't have
- 13:04Speaker 5: to get used in certain games. And do you think
- 13:07Speaker 5: there's still a need for that long relief guy in
- 13:09Speaker 5: a bullpen?
- 13:11Speaker 4: Number one. I do think there is still a need.
- 13:13Speaker 4: That's a great question, Kevin.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I do think there is still a need for it,
- 13:19Speaker 3: especially on teams like the Red Sox where your starters
- 13:23Speaker 3: are going four and five innings man, and some situations
- 13:27Speaker 3: one with crocheted the other night or one and a
- 13:30Speaker 3: third with crocheted the other night. These types of these
- 13:35Speaker 3: types of pitchers in your bullpens, these long relief guys
- 13:38Speaker 3: are saviors, man, They're saviors in your season. And I'll
- 13:44Speaker 3: take you back to two thousand and seven when we
- 13:46Speaker 3: won the World Series. Throughout that season, there were so
- 13:50Speaker 3: many times that Kyle Schneider dug us out of a
- 13:55Speaker 3: grave in situations where the starters couldn't get there, it.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Couldn't get deep into games. And he was a huge reason.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Who's now the pitching coach for the Devil Rays or
- 14:08Speaker 3: not the Devil Rays, the Tampa Bay Rays. Who's now
- 14:11Speaker 3: their pitching coach? And I tell him all the time
- 14:15Speaker 3: how successful he was at that role. And not only that,
- 14:21Speaker 3: it's a hard role, man, it's a very hard role
- 14:24Speaker 3: because you're not pitching in situations that are really meaningful,
- 14:31Speaker 3: and you're really pitching in games that you know are
- 14:36Speaker 3: blowouts and you're trying to just keep your team in
- 14:38Speaker 3: the game and you're trying to just to chew up innings.
- 14:43Speaker 3: And so for a pitcher to be able to go
- 14:45Speaker 3: out there and do that, it's a tough, tough role
- 14:48Speaker 3: for being And I really, I really don't think there's
- 14:52Speaker 3: that many guys that have the makeup now to be
- 14:55Speaker 3: able to do that number one.
- 14:57Speaker 4: That's why you don't see it very often.
- 15:02Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, their key roles
- 15:04Speaker 3: just as much as the rest of the guys in
- 15:06Speaker 3: the bullpen.
- 15:08Speaker 4: And like I said earlier, we wouldn't have.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Gotten all the way to where we'd gotten in O
- 15:12Speaker 3: seven and be able to win the World Series without
- 15:14Speaker 3: our long reliever and Kyle Sider.
- 15:19Speaker 1: There are more than seventy thousand events listed on the

- 16:21Speaker 1: Hey, Pap, I want to take one more turn here
- 16:24Speaker 1: and then we'll move on to a different segment. Yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 1: let's let's show whatever we have for it. If we
- 16:29Speaker 1: can of Juan Soto from yesterday returning to the Mets,
- 16:33Speaker 1: and anything that is said during a long losing streak
- 16:37Speaker 1: is going to turn into a little chatter, right, So
- 16:41Speaker 1: Soto was asked about, you know, the losing streak and
- 16:44Speaker 1: all of that, and he essentially said that he hadn't
- 16:46Speaker 1: spoken to teammates during that time period, and then of
- 16:49Speaker 1: course everyone freaks out here it is so s and
- 16:52Speaker 1: Y Sodo says he did not talk to any teammates
- 16:54Speaker 1: during the losing streak. Quote, they've been on the road
- 16:56Speaker 1: most of the time, I haven't talked to them. Well,
- 16:58Speaker 1: Sam and who writes for The Athletic, wrote a nice
- 17:00Speaker 1: article saying it's no big deal. So between you and
- 17:03Speaker 1: we'll get KP's response to, uh, what did you experience
- 17:07Speaker 1: when either you were down or when a teammate was down.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Is it their responsibility when the team's on the road
- 17:13Speaker 1: to call them and be like, hey, guys, I know
- 17:16Speaker 1: things aren't going well, but I'm thinking of you.
- 17:19Speaker 4: No, no, no, not necessarily. This is the way I've
- 17:24Speaker 4: always seen it been done.
- 17:28Speaker 3: And what I think is that, you know, the hitters
- 17:32Speaker 3: police the hitters, and the pictures kind of almost police
- 17:35Speaker 3: the pictures, right and and and if it's just one guy,
- 17:42Speaker 3: it's it's you that that guy in that lineup, or
- 17:45Speaker 3: that that hitter or position player usually has another position
- 17:49Speaker 3: player that he can go to and and kind of
- 17:54Speaker 3: sit down, chop it up, talk shop and say, hey,
- 17:58Speaker 3: you know, let's get back to this maybe, or hey,
- 18:02Speaker 3: you know, I noticed this a little bit, or hey
- 18:04Speaker 3: you might be thinking about this too.
- 18:06Speaker 4: What's your thought process?
- 18:08Speaker 3: I know thought process is a big thing, and you know,
- 18:11Speaker 3: the pitchers also have their side of things where you know,
- 18:15Speaker 3: when I was a young player, Kurt Shilling was kind
- 18:17Speaker 3: of that guy for me who would be like, hey,
- 18:20Speaker 3: I noticed this a little bit, or you know, what
- 18:22Speaker 3: was your thought process behind this? You know, when you
- 18:25Speaker 3: gave up that game winning bomb or whatever, and.
- 18:28Speaker 4: You've given up two or three in a row, but
- 18:32Speaker 4: as a whole, you know, as a whole, if it's
- 18:36Speaker 4: a team struggling, usually, in my opinion, and what I've
- 18:41Speaker 4: seen is it's a it's a player's only meeting.
- 18:44Speaker 3: It's hey, let's the coaches don't need to be involved
- 18:47Speaker 3: in this, the training staff doesn't need nobody needs to
- 18:50Speaker 3: be involved in this. This is a player's only meeting.
- 18:53Speaker 3: And we're gonna go around the room and we're gonna talk.
- 18:56Speaker 4: About, hey, what can we do as a whole to
- 18:59Speaker 4: get better? Now?
- 19:00Speaker 3: Put the blame on just one person, and because we
- 19:03Speaker 3: all know we hadn't been pulling the rope together right,
- 19:06Speaker 3: and so let's let's hash it out and put it
- 19:09Speaker 3: out on the table and say, hey, what all can
- 19:11Speaker 3: we do better as a team.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Let's let's get it out there.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Let's talk about it and go win another game the
- 19:16Speaker 3: next game that we have.
- 19:18Speaker 4: And so that's kind of the things that I've seen
- 19:20Speaker 4: in my career.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's a little weird that he said
- 19:24Speaker 5: it right, And I think people have to understand that
- 19:27Speaker 5: not every single person on a team are best friends.
- 19:30Speaker 5: You know, there's times where either I was on the
- 19:32Speaker 5: IL or some guys are on the IO and he's
- 19:34Speaker 5: not picking up the phone, calling me or texting me
- 19:37Speaker 5: or facetiming me. But there is lines of communication all
- 19:41Speaker 5: the time throughout a season. There's hitters groups, there's team groups,
- 19:44Speaker 5: there's travel groups. There's definitely opportunities when you're not with
- 19:48Speaker 5: the team or a teammates away for you to still
- 19:51Speaker 5: be in contact. You know, I had a couple of
- 19:53Speaker 5: times I was on the IL and you know, I
- 19:55Speaker 5: was back in Toronto where I was back in a
- 19:58Speaker 5: different city, and at the released after a game, I
- 20:01Speaker 5: would be in the group message saying a big hit,
- 20:04Speaker 5: nice you, no great outing, big win something, So like,
- 20:08Speaker 5: there's always communication going on. The fact that he came
- 20:10Speaker 5: out and said he had zero communication is a little
- 20:13Speaker 5: bit weird to me. I think we've kind of touched
- 20:16Speaker 5: on the wheel wheel mimick of the Mets and the
- 20:20Speaker 5: story between you know, if Lindor and Sodo are friends,
- 20:23Speaker 5: and they don't necessarily have to be friends for this
- 20:25Speaker 5: thing to work. But you got to respect each other,
- 20:27Speaker 5: you gotta be teammates, and you gotta communicate when things matter.
- 20:30Speaker 5: So it is a little bit weird that he would
- 20:32Speaker 5: have answered that question with no communication. He could have
- 20:35Speaker 5: said yeah, you know, he could have even if he lied,
- 20:37Speaker 5: he could have just said, yeah, there's some level of communication.
- 20:40Speaker 4: You know.
- 20:40Speaker 5: I was reaching out to a couple of the guys,
- 20:42Speaker 5: saw something about their swings, you know, just encouraging the guys.
- 20:46Speaker 4: But no, no communication is a little bit weird to me. Yeah,
- 20:49Speaker 4: and I'll.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Say this and this not so really back wand Soto
- 20:53Speaker 3: at all in this, but I did play with him
- 20:55Speaker 3: when he was a rookie with.
- 20:56Speaker 4: The Nationals, and it seemed to me that he was a.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Very not an eye guy, but a very kept to
- 21:07Speaker 3: himself type of guy.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Didn't really go out.
- 21:12Speaker 3: On a limb for other players, just kind of I'm
- 21:15Speaker 3: gonna do me and be me and just worry about
- 21:18Speaker 3: me and that's it.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Well, that's okay, and that's fine and dandy, But.
- 21:23Speaker 3: When you have the money and the leadership role that
- 21:28Speaker 3: he has now, given things have got to change, right,
- 21:32Speaker 3: Things have got to change in order for you to
- 21:33Speaker 3: be a leader, and you say, hey, you know, we
- 21:36Speaker 3: gotta get some damn things straight here, right, And I'm
- 21:40Speaker 3: the one that's got to give him straight because I'm
- 21:42Speaker 3: the leader on this team.
- 21:44Speaker 4: And I know Jason Wirred.
- 21:46Speaker 3: There was a lot of times he tried to talk
- 21:47Speaker 3: to him where he's kind of, you know, not just
- 21:50Speaker 3: brushed off in a way, and so I think that's
- 21:53Speaker 3: not only part of his attitude, but still at the
- 21:57Speaker 3: same time, when things need to be said, that got
- 22:00Speaker 3: to be said, and it doesn't seem like he's doing that.
- 22:04Speaker 2: You're talking, but Soda is not the leader of the team.
- 22:07Speaker 2: He doesn't want to be. He doesn't want to He's
- 22:08Speaker 2: not the vocal guy. He's kind of like the.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Hey, I'm going to show up and lead by example
- 22:14Speaker 1: with my production every single day, take my walks, hit
- 22:18Speaker 1: my dangers, put up some of the most consistent stats
- 22:20Speaker 1: you've seen.
- 22:21Speaker 3: And yeah, but but Toddy, when you get paid that
- 22:24Speaker 3: type of money and when you're putting that type of position,
- 22:27Speaker 3: the reporters are coming.
- 22:29Speaker 4: To you night in and night out, and so you
- 22:32Speaker 4: have to be able to.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Lead in that kind of way lead in a way
- 22:38Speaker 3: that hey, I'm accountable and I'm available to say what
- 22:42Speaker 3: that needs to be said.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Yeah, there's also a part two where there's also a
- 22:47Speaker 5: part two when you are kind of the face of
- 22:49Speaker 5: your franchise and I know they have a couple because
- 22:51Speaker 5: you have Lindor there as well, But when you're the
- 22:53Speaker 5: guy that the media wants to talk to, you should
- 22:56Speaker 5: have a pulse for what's going on in that clubhouse.
- 22:58Speaker 5: You're kind of the voice for the team. And also
- 23:01Speaker 5: when you were the best player on the team, there
- 23:04Speaker 5: is a sense of a responsibility. Even though you're introverted
- 23:09Speaker 5: and you like to just show up and do your
- 23:10Speaker 5: own thing, it is part of your responsibility to try
- 23:13Speaker 5: to make the other guys around you better. And some
- 23:16Speaker 5: of that is helping a guy looking at his swing,
- 23:19Speaker 5: you know, going in the batting case with them. A
- 23:21Speaker 5: lot of the great players that I was around who
- 23:23Speaker 5: were also great leaders, and they weren't the most vocal guys,
- 23:26Speaker 5: but they were guys that I could go to and
- 23:28Speaker 5: be like, hey, I'm not like feeling too good at
- 23:30Speaker 5: the play, Like what are you seeing?
- 23:31Speaker 2: You know?
- 23:32Speaker 5: Can I come hit with you in the cage and
- 23:33Speaker 5: they would take me in there with them, and you know,
- 23:36Speaker 5: you know, and not everyone's gonna be that way, and
- 23:39Speaker 5: it might not be Soto's personality, but when you're this
- 23:42Speaker 5: seven hundred million dollar man, you know, the face of
- 23:45Speaker 5: the franchise for the New York Mets, sometimes you have
- 23:47Speaker 5: to kind of break out of your show. And those
- 23:49Speaker 5: are sort of the things that you have to do
- 23:51Speaker 5: in order to make your organization better.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Hey, look, guys, I'll tell you this is Scott I
- 23:57Speaker 3: play with Manny.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Ramirez, Okay.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 3: And there were many, many, many times where David Ortiz
- 24:07Speaker 3: had to pull many Ramirez aside and say say, hey, bro,
- 24:12Speaker 3: you got to do some of these things. You got
- 24:14Speaker 3: you are our best player that we have, and you've
- 24:18Speaker 3: got to be accountable for some of these things. And
- 24:20Speaker 3: you've got to talk to the media, and you've got to,
- 24:24Speaker 3: you know, be a part of this team.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Whether whether whether it's hey, come out to.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Dinner with us, David Ortiz had to go grab him
- 24:32Speaker 3: up in his hotel room and say, hey, come on,
- 24:34Speaker 3: let's go.
- 24:34Speaker 4: You're a part of this team.
- 24:36Speaker 3: There's little nuances and little things that want Soto, whether
- 24:40Speaker 3: he likes it, or not should be doing
