- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset, coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy. Into the world.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey, everybody.
- 0:28Good morning. It's hot, hot, hot here and it's
- 0:31pitch dark while I'm doing this. So I can be outside, do my
- 0:36meditation and it's still hot early in the morning.
- 0:40But in that's not what this is about.
- 0:42This is about telling you the story of confusion in your
- 0:46marketing yourself. So I have a client who is
- 0:49working on building out her business and it's a new type of
- 0:52business. Not, not necessarily.
- 0:56It's new business for her and she's expanding in the, in the
- 1:00arena of the type of business she's in.
- 1:02And there are lots of things when it comes to marketing that
- 1:08people struggle with. And you can hire experts, you
- 1:12can hire people, you can bring all these people in to talk to
- 1:16you about it. And she has been doing that
- 1:18prior to working with me a couple months ago.
- 1:21She's been talking to all different kinds of people.
- 1:23She started working with me a couple months ago and prior to
- 1:27that and still she's been talking to all these different
- 1:30people that could potentially help her out with ideas and
- 1:34putting things together and which direction to go.
- 1:37And I find this fascinating because I, I get to hear it all
- 1:42because we are like, I'm helping her choose and decide of which
- 1:45way she should go. So she's sending me over
- 1:49proposals and formats and all these different things are
- 1:52coming her way. And she said the keywords.
- 1:56I am overwhelmed with all of this.
- 1:58This is just not fun. And I OK, I completely
- 2:03appreciate your position. Now I want you to pause.
- 2:05I want you to hit the pause button and I want you to think
- 2:08about what is overwhelming because we all go through this.
- 2:11So I'm going to take you all through the same process I
- 2:13talked to her about and she said, I, I think it's just,
- 2:18there are so many choices. I don't know what to get.
- 2:20And I said, well, let's break it down and make it not such a big
- 2:23thing because this is like going to The Cheesecake Factory.
- 2:26If any of you have ever been to eat at The Cheesecake Factory,
- 2:29you know, the menu is enormous. It's, it's overwhelming.
- 2:33And you get there and it's page after page after page.
- 2:35And, and you know, even the choice of cheesecakes is
- 2:39overwhelming you. It's, it's like you end up
- 2:41ordering the New York style cheesecake, which is just plain
- 2:44because there's so many. And as human beings, sometimes
- 2:49we get automatically overwhelmed when we have too many choices,
- 2:53which sounds nutty because you would think you want to have a
- 2:56lot of choices, and we do. So it's like, you know, when you
- 2:59ever walk into Home Depot to look at paint and that the paint
- 3:02colors are just vast and you stand there in front of all
- 3:06these colors and immediately you feel overwhelmed.
- 3:10So there's a very simple trick, OK, in this process, and it's
- 3:17part of the elimination strategy.
- 3:18It's not looking at all of them and saying, OK, what, what,
- 3:23which ones do I love? It's looking at it and saying,
- 3:26what do I not feel aligned with at all?
- 3:30Just start Xing out. So you could take all the
- 3:34proposals, which is what I told her to do, print them all out,
- 3:37put them all down her counter and start Xing out the parts
- 3:41that she does not feel aligned with.
- 3:44Now, this is not for her to take these papers and go back to
- 3:47anybody else. This is for her to see just
- 3:50where the overwhelm is coming in.
- 3:52Where is she feeling this angst about the whole thing?
- 3:55Start Xing out stuff. Say, Nope, this is not for me.
- 3:58No, I'm never going to do that. Like I've had real estate
- 4:01clients that I coached say to me, I'm never cold calling.
- 4:04OK, Soon as they say that, we don't even go down that road.
- 4:08Now, some people may say, well, Kim, you should push them to do
- 4:11that. It's it's idiocy because it
- 4:14doesn't work. When they're ready, if they
- 4:17decide to change their mind and do it, they will do it.
- 4:20And until then, I'm not going to fight that uphill battle because
- 4:23it's useless and it doesn't align with where they are.
- 4:26So you have to meet people where they are and meet yourself where
- 4:30you are. So the First things first, you
- 4:32go through X out all the things that are not aligned.
- 4:35Then highlight the elements that you do like.
- 4:39Sit and highlight all the elements that you do like.
- 4:41Now, let's say you don't have proposals to do this with.
- 4:44You can still write down all the things you are not aligned with,
- 4:47the things that you don't like about something you're working
- 4:50on, and then write down the things you do like about the
- 4:53things you are working on so you can start to look for the
- 4:56patterns, the things that work. I did this very exercise with
- 5:00the gardens at the end of the year last year and it taught me
- 5:03so much. And this year we had success ish
- 5:07with tomatoes. We got better results.
- 5:10But you know what I've learned now?
- 5:13I'm going to use the same method again, but I'm going to put
- 5:16something else in play to have really help out with it.
- 5:19And again, it's going through the exercise.
- 5:23So overwhelm does not mean you have to take yourself out, it
- 5:26just means you have to be more informed.
- 5:29All right my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I'll see
- 5:32you tomorrow. Bye.
