Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. Welcome back to 22 Panels, episode 258.
- 0:09Tad Eggleston: Just, just crazy, Phil.
- 0:11Tad Eggleston: Tyler… Tyler had to, to…
- 0:16Tad Eggleston: To take care of some family stuff today, so he's not joining us, but we wish him well, and he's in our thoughts.
- 0:23Tad Eggleston: Let's jump straight into the news. I was so… So happy to see…
- 0:29Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 0:29Tad Eggleston: that the old jackwad companies.
- 0:33Tad Eggleston: got thrown out of court in France, and the new Association for the Development of Comics in Angolem has prevailed, and we should see a new festival launch in January of 2027. Now, if somebody will just pay…
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: For my airfare and lodging, so that I can go.
- 0:53Tad Eggleston: I'll be truly, truly over the moon.
- 0:57Phil: It's one of those things where I'm sure that it'll never be the same as it used to be, but at least it still exists, and that means.
- 1:05Tad Eggleston: I would actually… I am not sure that it won't be the same that it used to be. I mean, any good festival evolves anyway, but, like, I wouldn't be shocked at all if it comes out of the gate better than it used to be.
- 1:20Phil: Hey, that'd be great news.
- 1:22Tad Eggleston: If only because they seem to be centering artists more.
- 1:26Tad Eggleston: So, and it was already a somewhat… Art and work-centric.
- 1:34Tad Eggleston: festival, you know what I mean? But they're talking about paid prizes with guaranteed publishing.
- 1:39Tad Eggleston: Et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:42Phil: That's incredible.
- 1:43Tad Eggleston: And I don't think that that can possibly make it worse.
- 1:48Phil: Yeah.
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: my son… decided to tip me to this, and I'm happy that he did, even though it's like…
- 1:57Tad Eggleston: edge of comics. Everybody knows my opinions on… I say I'm into comics, and you ask me about the comic book movie, but this one's kind of cool.
- 2:07Tad Eggleston: somewhat legendary director, Steven Soderbergh has, agreed to…
- 2:15Tad Eggleston: direct the Batman Part 2 until Matt Reeves is able to return.
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: Matt Reeves had to leave set, what, last week, the week before?
- 2:26Tad Eggleston: For an undisclosed family issue, and it had been in the air when they'd get back, and, like, anybody who knows anything about movies knows that the longer you delay, the more likely things are to get.
- 2:42Tad Eggleston: Scrapped.
- 2:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah. It's just, it's hard to be in a holding pattern.
- 2:49Phil: Yeah.
- 2:49Tad Eggleston: Hopefully it doesn't leave us.
- 2:50Phil: same controversy of a release the Reeves cut, you know… Well, I mean… Well, I mean…
- 2:58Tad Eggleston: all indication that I'm seeing is that we will get the Reeves cut, that Soderbergh is not coming to do final cut, he's coming to continue the shooting schedule.
- 3:10Phil: Oh, okay.
- 3:14Tad Eggleston: you know, every… and I haven't… I haven't dug deep, but everything that I've seen indicates that this is not… he's replacing Matt Reeves.
- 3:22Tad Eggleston: This is… he's…
- 3:27Tad Eggleston: taking… I mean, I assume that he's got a relationship with Matt Reeves, because Steven Soderbergh is… has enough of a reputation that I just can't imagine him being willing to do this just because the studio asked him.
- 3:43Tad Eggleston: Right. Wow.
- 3:46Tad Eggleston: So…
- 3:50Tad Eggleston: I mean, I could be wrong, you know. Jonah, if you're listening, I'm certain that you've taken a deep dive.
- 3:56Tad Eggleston: But… but it looks like it's not, oh, he's taking over, it's…
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: If you've got a good director on set…
- 4:05Tad Eggleston: You can keep shooting even if the primary director's not there.
- 4:09Tad Eggleston: Particularly if there's any communication between the two about what the vision is, what the, you know… it's all but guaranteed Reeves had already laid out a shooting schedule, you know.
- 4:24Tad Eggleston: depending on what Reeves is dealing with, it might not be that he can't look at dailies or
- 4:31Tad Eggleston: You know, spend a few hours a day
- 4:35Tad Eggleston: Working remotely in a way to… work hand-in-hand with Soderbergh.
- 4:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 4:42Phil: I mean, it would be nice.
- 4:43Tad Eggleston: Oh, skip.
- 4:44Phil: There, if it didn't lead to a fractured.
- 4:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, we totally have… Crazy, toxic fans out there, so who the fuck knows?
- 4:54Tad Eggleston: But the… but the, the, the, the definite vibe… Is that this isn't… a replacement.
- 5:07Tad Eggleston: It's a… it's a helping hand.
- 5:10Tad Eggleston: So, cross our fingers.
- 5:13Phil: Yep.
- 5:14Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been?
- 5:17Tad Eggleston: What's half a Scaramucci, Phil?
- 5:21Phil: It's 5 days now, 4.5 days!
- 5:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Well, I mean, technically, it would have been 5 points…
- 5:26Phil: It's life, too.
- 5:27Tad Eggleston: Nice, but…
- 5:28Phil: Okay, so it's a Zechariah?
- 5:31Phil: Oh.
- 5:31Tad Eggleston: Zachariah was less than half a Scaramucci.
- 5:35Phil: Yo.
- 5:39Tad Eggleston: Which, like…
- 5:40Phil: Well.
- 5:40Tad Eggleston: I mean, all reports come out… She might be joining.
- 5:42Phil: Winning the… the diaper team, for… for all we know.
- 5:46Tad Eggleston: All reports are she was hired directly by Trump without vetting it.
- 5:53Tad Eggleston: Or without his chief of staff even being given the opportunity to vet the idea.
- 6:01Phil: Wow.
- 6:03Phil: This happened on Saturdays.
- 6:05Tad Eggleston: This happened on Saturday. She arrived in Washington on Monday and was thrown to the wolves on Tuesday. And by the wolves, she called on Breitbark, Newsmax, and Fox News as the three people that she took questions from in her 14 minutes of
- 6:23Tad Eggleston: Awful press conference.
- 6:25Phil: Really, really hoping for, for some, you know, lowball, easy questions there.
- 6:30Tad Eggleston: Oh, she totally got lowball easy questions, and she totally blew them anyway.
- 6:37Tad Eggleston: She blew hello.
- 6:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it appears that her only qualifications are like Natalie, like Carolyn Levitt, like so many before her. She looks vaguely like Ivanka.
- 6:56Tad Eggleston: And we know how much Trump has a thing for his oldest daughter.
- 7:02Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 7:03Tad Eggleston: Do ya?
- 7:05Tad Eggleston: But, I loved the way he,
- 7:10Tad Eggleston: gave her support on Friday morning.
- 7:13Tad Eggleston: I fully support her, she's a good girl. I might talk to her and say, you know, you've got kids, do you really want to put yourself through this? Maybe you want to rethink your decision.
- 7:26Phil: Oh, boy.
- 7:30Phil: So does that mean the, White House is just not holding press conferences until, until they find a replacement?
- 7:35Tad Eggleston: knows. Who the hell knows? I mean…
- 7:37Phil: I mean, they're not laying journalists in there, so…
- 7:39Tad Eggleston: Trump does… well, they're not letting… well, no, the Supreme Court has ruled that they have to let journalists in.
- 7:47Phil: Oh, okay.
- 7:48Tad Eggleston: Or at least that if they let any journalists in, they have to let them all in.
- 7:53Phil: Hmm.
- 7:54Tad Eggleston: And since they're not throwing Fox out of the building, that means NBC and Reuters and the AP are… are back.
- 8:02Tad Eggleston: Politico.
- 8:04Tad Eggleston: But yeah… yeah…
- 8:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, all of this would be so horrible and terrifying if they weren't also the Keystone cops.
- 8:20Tad Eggleston: Though, some days, I don't know if that makes it less…
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: Oh, you don't know the Keystone Cops? It was, it was like, no.
- 8:29Tad Eggleston: Old slapstick… Movies of bumbling idiot cops, like, running their cars into each other…
- 8:39Phil: Okay.
- 8:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah It's… it's… it's a euphemism for completely and utterly hilariously incompetent.
- 8:49Phil: See, the only thing I could think of was a Keystone being one of the cities that I think Wally West lives in for the Flash.
- 8:56Tad Eggleston: Nope.
- 8:56Phil: checks, so… yeah. So I thought this was getting… I thought this was a comic book reference, not a…
- 9:02Phil: you know, something between Three Stooges and Now reference.
- 9:05Tad Eggleston: The Keystone Cops are a fictional, humorously incompetent police force that starred in silent slapstick comedy short films produced by Max Sennett for his Keystone Studios from 1912 until the early 1920s.
- 9:21Tad Eggleston: Abbott and Costello met them.
- 9:23Phil: Neither of us were around for that one.
- 9:25Tad Eggleston: No.
- 9:26Phil: So you're saying they influenced the three students?
- 9:28Tad Eggleston: But the, the, the, the, the… The,
- 9:34Tad Eggleston: the phrase has been in the lexicon for… for… since our grandchild… or grandparents were kids, so I'm just… I'm… I'm shocked that it didn't…
- 9:45Tad Eggleston: Never heard it before.
- 9:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 9:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 9:49Tad Eggleston: That's… that's… that's sad.
- 9:53Tad Eggleston: But, you know, anyway.
- 9:56Phil: There's… there's great tragedies.
- 10:01Tad Eggleston: I mean, yeah, but I don't feel like getting into those, so let's talk…
- 10:04Phil: That's fair.
- 10:05Tad Eggleston: some new to order, this is the last week to order from the October catalog. I just got my reminder from my shop to get my orders in.
- 10:14Phil: There you go. First up, there is Joker's Christmas Carol from Paul Dini, Kevin.
- 10:20Phil: Altieri at DC Comics. Happy Holidays from the Clown Prince of Crime! It's the night before Christmas, and only one man is stirring the Clown Prince of Crime, and he's all out of time. He's visited by three spectral forms, and he'd rather be food for the worms. Will these ghosts show the Joker the air of his ways, or will the villain see the end of his days? Paul Dini reunites with one
- 10:45Phil: of his longtime Batman the Animated Series collaborators, Kevin Altieri, to tell this timeless tale of holiday hilarity. I did not realize that was rhyming, even as I was reading it, until it was far too late. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of November 2nd in stores December 2nd.
- 11:05Tad Eggleston: Righty… Usagi! Yojimbo.
- 11:11Tad Eggleston: Winter Special, one shot.
- 11:15Tad Eggleston: Number one, from Stan Sakai and Dark Horse. While learning to shape decorative Adorodongo spheres according to the ancient tradition, Usagi learns a lesson about patience, practice, and purpose. A reminder that simple beauty can take a lifetime to perfect. For Kaido and you.
- 11:32Tad Eggleston: The holidays deliver more than they bargained for, when an orphanage's Christmas Eve dinner is hijacked by a local street gang. It's a high-speed, high-calorie chase through the snowy streets of Osaka that leads to a messy conclusion. Elsewhere, chibi woodcutters struggle to prepare for the New Year's celebration.
- 11:49Tad Eggleston: But one snowy night, an act of kindness leads to an extraordinary surprise.
- 11:58Tad Eggleston: So, how about some graphic novels? I will lead off!
- 12:03Tad Eggleston: With Liberty from Jordan Meckner and Etienne LaRue from Onei Magnetic Press.
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: Oh, I forgot. My, final order cut off on Usagi was December 7th, and stores on January 27th.
- 12:17Tad Eggleston: 1776, the American Revolution is on the brink of collapse. Before it can even get started, the colonies are outgunned, outmanned, and out of time. While Washington's ragged army faces the full might of the British Empire, a different kind of battle begins across the Atlantic. Silas Dean, a Connecticut merchant.
- 12:34Tad Eggleston: turned secret envoys dispatched by the Continental Congress on a mission that could decide the fate of the rebellion, secure weapons, gunpowder, and allies from the French.
- 12:44Tad Eggleston: But Dean cannot succeed alone. He finds an unlikely partner, Pierre Augustin Caran de Bonsai, a playwright, celebrity, political fiction.
- 12:56Tad Eggleston: fixer, and man whose charm is as dangerous as his ambition. Famous for writing The Barber of Seville, Beaumarchais.
- 13:06Tad Eggleston: turns his theatrical genius towards a far riskier production, a clandestine pipeline of French arms to the American rebels, hidden behind shell companies, forged manifests, and diplomatic sleight of hand. Together, they navigate a treasureous world of spies, royal ministers, profiteers, and British agents determined to choke the revolution.
- 13:26Tad Eggleston: Before it can breathe.
- 13:30Tad Eggleston: Liberty is from One Magnetic Press, from, final order cutoff of November 16th, and in stores on December 8th.
- 13:39Tad Eggleston: And I had the last graphic novel that we had to talk about, so I'll move straight into collections! Babylon Cove, from Rafer Roberts and Joe Eisma at Mad Cave Studios. Final order cutoff of November 9th, in stores on December 2nd. This is a story about Heather, a no-nonsense career gal who returns to her picturesque New England hometown for the first time in a decade to attend a family funeral.
- 14:03Tad Eggleston: Dennis, the all-American dreamboat who broke Heather's heart in high school. Charlie.
- 14:08Tad Eggleston: The late blooming shy boy who Heather never gave the time of day, and Karthen, the ancient demon with plans to feast on the flesh of everyone in town.
- 14:17Tad Eggleston: You ever wondered what would happen if Stephen King were allowed to write one of those Hallmark holiday movies?
- 14:24Tad Eggleston: Welcome to Babylon Co.
- 14:27Tad Eggleston: Final order, cutoff of November 9th in stores on December 2nd.
- 14:34Phil: And there's Batman Bad Seed, Streaks of Gotham, written by Matt Fraction, Mariko Tamaki, Greg Rucka, and Christopher Cantwell, with art by Jacob Phillips, Rosa Ecadal, Steve Lieber, and Jorge Forenz, and others as well. The long, dark night triggered by a poison ivy's attack threatens the very survival of Gotham City in this
- 14:58Phil: A thrilling collection showing ordinary citizens facing what may be the end of their world.
- 15:03Phil: Police officers Jim Gordon and Ezzy Esplanosa take on anarchy and other criminals, while the rest of Vandal Savage's GCPD hunts the Bat Family. The staff of Trauma Center Gotham's General wrestles with the brutal consequences of Ivy's Superbloom, plus more street-level stories, all from some of the top talents in comics, like Batman Bad Seeds, Gotham Central No. 1 and 2,
- 15:26Phil: Batman Bad Seeds Gotham General No. 1 and 2, and Batman Bad Seeds Streets of Gotham No. 1. It's gonna have a final order cutoff of November 16th, in stores February 23rd.
- 15:40Tad Eggleston: Alrighty…
- 15:42Phil: June.
- 15:43Phil: Do you want me to take a…
- 15:45Tad Eggleston: That is entirely up to you. You want final order cutoff, or do you want crowdfunding?
- 15:50Phil: I'll take crowdfunding.
- 15:51Tad Eggleston: Alright, final on our cutoff of Monday, October 26th, we have Absolute Batman Beyond Arkham, number 1, which is a one-shot from Scott Snyder, Frank Thierry, Francesco Francavilla from DC, out on November 25th.
- 16:06Tad Eggleston: Archie, the Married Life Omnibus, Volume 1. This is one of my favorite Archie titles.
- 16:13Tad Eggleston: I haven't read enough Archie, but of the Archie that I've read, I like this one a lot.
- 16:19Tad Eggleston: from Michael Uslan, Paul Kupperberg, Stan Goldberg, Norm Brafogel of Batman fame, and Fernando Ruiz, from Onei on December 1st. Egg Hunt, number one from Benjamin Percy, Raul Fernandez at Mad Cave, out on November 18th.
- 16:39Tad Eggleston: The collected edition of Of the Earth from Chris Condon, Andrew Eric, and Charlie Adlard, out from Image Comics on December 2nd. The ones, too!
- 16:49Tad Eggleston: The other ones, number one from Brian Michael Bendis and Jacob Eggbigger at Dark Horse on December 9th, and the Collected Spirit of Shadows from Nick Cagnetti and Daniel Ziegler out from Onei, and I completely forgot to put the date in.
- 17:03Tad Eggleston: But, we'll assume sometime in December.
- 17:07Tad Eggleston: Likely.
- 17:10Phil: Alright, and on the crowdfunding horizon, there's the arts of Eddie Campbell, comiker, from Nick, Neoclius on Kickstarter through October 20th, Dregg's Quarterly Sci-Fi and Fantasy Comic Book Magazine, international indie creators, Tom Kaczynski from Uncivilized.
- 17:27Phil: on Kickstarter through October 25th. Fever Dream, a cursed comic book by Becky Cloonan, with Kinetic Collectibles on Kickstarter through October 29th. Dracula, Book 4, The Undead from Matt Wagner, Kelly Jones, and Orlok Press on Kickstarter through October 31st. Tezuka, God of Manga from Jason Cohn, that documentary's gonna be on Kickstarter through November 13th.
- 17:50Phil: And launching soon is Sync, number 18, Pineapple.
- 17:54Phil: John Lees and Alex Cormac in Comics Tribe, which will be on Kickstarter when it hits.
- 17:59Phil: What about some humble bubbles, Tad?
- 18:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, bundles! We've got some good ones.
- 18:06Tad Eggleston: We got some good ones, we've got Kurt Busiak's Astro City, the 30th Anniversary, $18 for 22 items from the Book Industry Charitable Foundation has been extended through October 21st. 50 essential fanographics titles, $25 for 51 items to support Freedom of the Press Foundation has been…

- 19:31Tad Eggleston: Burst.
- 19:32Tad Eggleston: So…
- 19:34Phil: 1st or 5th?
- 19:36Tad Eggleston: Fifth. Sorry. Fifth.
- 19:38Tad Eggleston: 5th, 1st, they both start with a 5.
- 19:41Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 19:41Phil: Right.
- 19:43Tad Eggleston: I'm tired.
- 19:46Tad Eggleston: There were a lot.
- 19:47Phil: Shame after this week, the fifth letter.
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, there are a lot… no, it's the sixth, you know.
- 19:53Phil: Yep.
- 19:54Tad Eggleston: Real close. Were a lot of good books this week.
- 19:58Tad Eggleston: And my first two picks were easy, and the third was a harder call. So my apologies to Chachu number three, Batman and Robin Year 1, Dynamic Duos No. 3.
- 20:16Tad Eggleston: I guess I was reading in advance on minor threats.
- 20:19Tad Eggleston: Because maybe that didn't come out this… this… or not minor threats,
- 20:24Tad Eggleston: The Jeff Lanimir one, Minor Arcana.
- 20:28Phil: Mmm.
- 20:28Tad Eggleston: Maybe that one didn't come out this week, so that that one doesn't get counted. I don't have to apologize to it. I will apologize to 100 Bullets US of Anchor. It was really good, too. But,
- 20:39Tad Eggleston: The top book was pretty much 4-O'd.
- 20:42Tad Eggleston: deed, there's a really good chance that it's, like, my top book for the year. Worst Man from Brandon Stein at Titan finally came out. I read the first 80 pages a long, long time ago, and finally got to see the rest.
- 20:58Tad Eggleston: With the rest of you, and my god, did they knock this out of the fucking park. We'll talk more about this in a few minutes, because I… I liked it so much, I said, hey, I know what great responsibility it is this week.
- 21:12Tad Eggleston: And here at.
- 21:13Phil: I thought you'd read the whole thing already.
- 21:15Tad Eggleston: No, I'd only read the first 80 pages for a long, long time. I didn't get the full preview copy.
- 21:23Tad Eggleston: Sure.
- 21:24Tad Eggleston: I got- I got a tease!
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: A third of it.
- 21:28Tad Eggleston: No Gods, No Masters No. 2 from Julio Anta and Jacoby Salcedo, continue, did just continue to knock this out of the park, it's amazing. And, the new…
- 21:46Tad Eggleston: You know, the, the Star Trek, Star Trek… defiant that, that…
- 21:55Tad Eggleston: that, Cantwell and Lansing and Kelly did, that era was so good that there are a number of us that feel like it deserves its name, like, you know, Next Generation, or Voyager, or whatnot, and it doesn't have its… and… and…
- 22:12Tad Eggleston: The Star Trek and, and, from Cantwell, and now Star Trek Zero Point from Charlie Jane Andrews, Isaac Sanchez Gonzalez.
- 22:23Tad Eggleston: Both only at issue 1 right now, but already feel like we've got that… that…
- 22:29Tad Eggleston: epic tied story between a couple of books.
- 22:33Tad Eggleston: that, yeah.
- 22:36Tad Eggleston: I wasn't a Star Trek guy 3 years ago.
- 22:39Tad Eggleston: That's the best way to put it. I wasn't a Star Trek guy 3 years ago, and now I'm like, oh my god!
- 22:46Phil: He got roped into it.
- 22:49Tad Eggleston: Tyler wants to say X-Men, X-Men, X-Men, so, I don't…
- 22:54Phil: I wrote that in for him.
- 22:55Tad Eggleston: Oh, you wrote that in.
- 22:57Phil: I did. I did.
- 22:58Tad Eggleston: Bill wrote X-Men, X-Men, X-Men for Tyler, I think he was…
- 23:04Phil: stand by it, if he was here.
- 23:05Tad Eggleston: He was feeling cheeky, but I don't know.
- 23:09Phil: I don't know if three X-Men books came out this week, but I think Tyler would stand by his love of X-Men.
- 23:13Tad Eggleston: Alright, Phil, take a walk.
- 23:16Phil: Yeah. So, my adventures this week, I downloaded the Manga Up app, on my phone so that, if I run out of things to read on Hoopla, and I'm, you know, really itching for, you know, the next installment of Smoking Behind the Supermarket with you, that's where it's on. It's, it's… they've got all the…
- 23:33Phil: you know, a whole bunch of stuff, doing a free trial after that. If it's… if I think it's worth it, if I read enough, it's like $7 a month.
- 23:41Phil: I think? Something like that, so that's pretty fun. I don't know if you've heard, but, the internet sensation known as Beatle Moses has put out a, a humor comics publication that's, like.
- 23:53Phil: Absolutely hilarious. It's on Hoopla right now. I'm getting it, I'm reading it. Completely ridiculous, highly recommend it. And then I saw, You Can See Everything today, which was really good. Highly recommend it. If you know who Nathan Fielder is, you should see it. It's, it's an enjoyable time.
- 24:10Phil: And, yeah, that's, that's about it. Did you… you're… you're… remained balconned in, in the world of flooding?
- 24:17Tad Eggleston: I did. I did.
- 24:19Phil: Yep.
- 24:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:21Phil: I, I actually, instead of just going one volume at a time, since, you know, I'm gonna be moving away from Nashville soon, I decided to put in interlibrary loan requests for the last four volumes of Pun Pun, and swipe blitz through Volume 4, and I'm like.
- 24:38Phil: Halfway through Volume 5, I'm chap… gone through 96 chapters. It's… it's in, like…
- 24:47Phil: kind of almost a happy place right now, and I just… I feel like the emotional devastation is… is just lurking behind the corner, and I've almost forgotten it's there. But but I bet… I bet it's gonna hit, like, a ton of bricks.
- 25:02Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 25:04Phil: Yeah.
- 25:05Phil: Yeah. When did you, when did you originally read the series? Because I know you said you'd loved it before.
- 25:10Tad Eggleston: Good night, Pan Pun.
- 25:12Phil: Yeah.
- 25:14Tad Eggleston: Before the podcast started, Oh. Possibly pre-pandemic?
- 25:23Tad Eggleston: Definitely, definitely during pandemic, if not pre-pandemic.
- 25:27Phil: Okay.
- 25:28Tad Eggleston: But, yeah.
- 25:29Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 25:31Tad Eggleston: I went looking for good manga, and at least at the time, it was the top of everybody's list for good manga.
- 25:37Phil: Oh, okay. Yeah, no, I'd heard a lot about it,
- 25:41Phil: beforehand, and it's been, you know, some of what I expected, and then a lot of what I have not expected at all. But it's been very good, very, very good.
- 25:50Tad Eggleston: No, at this point, I've read pretty much anything that Enio Sano has written. I think he has one series that I haven't read at this point.
- 25:59Phil: Okay.
- 26:01Phil: Yeah,
- 26:02Tad Eggleston: And I've yet to be disappointed, even a little.
- 26:05Phil: Yeah.
- 26:06Phil: Nice.
- 26:09Tad Eggleston: So… So yeah, that's, that, that, that's my, my, that, that's my, my…
- 26:18Tad Eggleston: Inio Asano take is, is the…
- 26:24Tad Eggleston: I,
- 26:30Tad Eggleston: Cuz… yeah, I just do.
- 26:33Tad Eggleston: Anyway…
- 26:35Phil: Okay.
- 26:35Tad Eggleston: I have talked worst, man.
- 26:37Phil: Like, you trailed off.
- 26:38Tad Eggleston: at times before.
- 26:41Tad Eggleston: So, I'm gonna start with you. Phil, what'd you think?
- 26:44Phil: I thought it was really good. I definitely loved the art, I loved how kinetic they were, how whole-page compositions were absolutely taken to mind here, and also just, like.
- 27:01Phil: You know, for a 240-page?
- 27:05Phil: graphic novel, it felt… it felt a lot longer, partly because there was so.
- 27:10Tad Eggleston: But not in a bad way.
- 27:12Phil: No, not in a bad way. In a way… no, not in a bad way at all. I mean… I mean that in a way that… because then one of the other points I was going to say is that they… they could have done another, like, 50 to 100 pages, and I would have read it, you know? It's… it was the kind of thing where…
- 27:29Phil: I… I mean, I've heard that they had more plans for some of these characters, so I'd love to see it, just because, the voices for everyone were so well-defined,
- 27:42Phil: I loved how everyone had, like, their own color in the dialogue balloons when it was balancing against a white background.
- 27:50Phil: how just, like, zany and over-the-top and silly the plot was, while also tackling, really serious, you know, heartfelt and worldwide themes, stuff like that. So, yeah, absolutely. I thought it was great. It… it… I think this is… well, I've been aware of, of Brantenstein's…
- 28:10Phil: artwork on other stuff before. I think this is their first time writing?
- 28:16Phil: for publication?
- 28:19Tad Eggleston: I think they've written a number of shorts.
- 28:24Phil: Oh.
- 28:24Tad Eggleston: I don't even think. I know that they've written a number of shorts at DC.
- 28:28Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 28:31Tad Eggleston: Because they, they've been in a lot of the various anthology books, particularly the…
- 28:38Tad Eggleston: the Pride anthologies for a number of years now.
- 28:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So… So, yeah, they, they, they…
- 28:49Tad Eggleston: They have done some writing, but this is their first graphic novel.
- 28:54Phil: Yeah, and for a first graphic novel, it… it feels very experienced, very, like, they knew what the hell they were doing, and I thought it was great. I thought it was a really great, you know.
- 29:07Phil: debut for them, and I'd love to… I'd love to see them write for themselves some more, you know?
- 29:13Tad Eggleston: Right. I, I, I hope they do as well.
- 29:17Tad Eggleston: I loved the humor, I loved… The depth of the characters.
- 29:23Tad Eggleston: I love the neurodiversity of the characters.
- 29:28Tad Eggleston: I loved the… subtle…
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: At times, and less so at other times, class warfare going on.
- 29:43Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 29:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it was just… it's fun on so many levels. And at its heart, it's…
- 29:56Tad Eggleston: A buddy comedy and a couple of… well, 3 buddy comedies and… and 2 romances.
- 30:04Phil: Yeah.
- 30:04Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 30:05Phil: Yeah.
- 30:05Tad Eggleston: Does that sound right? Something like that.
- 30:09Tad Eggleston: Everybody comic.
- 30:09Phil: I mean…
- 30:10Tad Eggleston: and…
- 30:11Phil: Gosh, you know, okay, so it's 3 buddy comedies, 2 romances, like… half…
- 30:19Tad Eggleston: And a revenge story?
- 30:21Phil: Half to… half to a quarter action, and then a, a party movie, you know?
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: Well, I had a revenge story and a heist film.
- 30:30Phil: Yes.
- 30:32Phil: So it's got a lot going for it.
- 30:34Tad Eggleston: All put together, but not…
- 30:38Phil: It's funny.
- 30:38Tad Eggleston: No, that's…
- 30:39Phil: Weddings and a funeral of comics.
- 30:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 30:42Phil: Or for weddings and.
- 30:43Tad Eggleston: Four weddings and a funeral. Yeah, except.
- 30:45Phil: Right.
- 30:45Tad Eggleston: These all happen separately, and these all happen on the island at once.
- 30:49Phil: Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:51Phil: It… it was really…
- 30:53Phil: It was one of those stories that felt like, hey, here's a giant cast of characters, let's look at the most chaotic thing happening at any given point in time.
- 31:00Tad Eggleston: But somehow you don't actually, like, lose track of any of them, either.
- 31:04Phil: No, no, that was the other thing that was great, is that it…
- 31:07Phil: It felt chaotic in an extremely coordinated way.
- 31:12Tad Eggleston: I mean, you're very aware that everything is happening in a day.
- 31:16Phil: Yes, yes, and that it's happening continuously, that you're following these people more or less non-stop.
- 31:22Tad Eggleston: Well, you're very, very aware that it's actually, like, possibly taking you longer to read it than it takes for it to happen, because you're seeing two different angles.
- 31:32Phil: I actually did, I started reading it last night, and then I actually, I got far enough into it to know that I liked it, and then, went to bed, and so it was actually a little fortuitous that you slept in this morning, because then I was able to finish reading it. Yeah. Because otherwise, I wouldn't. I would have been at, like, the halfway.
- 31:48Tad Eggleston: I might have beat you.
- 31:50Tad Eggleston: I might have beat you upside the head.
- 31:52Phil: It would have.
- 31:53Phil: I probably would have… It's not like I didn't… Verbal bag.
- 31:56Tad Eggleston: on Tuesday.
- 31:58Phil: No, that's fair, I know, I know.
- 31:59Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 32:00Phil: I blame… I blame the strength of Enio Asano's storytelling on why I didn't start reading this year. Fair.
- 32:07Phil: But at the same time… I mean, it's very…
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: Good. Any, any Assana?
- 32:11Phil: Good enough.
- 32:12Tad Eggleston: talent.
- 32:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 32:13Phil: And it was all good enough that I didn't wish I was still reading Pun Pun while I was reading it.
- 32:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah. No, I totally found a way to cram it in, like…
- 32:22Phil: Happens too often.
- 32:23Tad Eggleston: as soon as I had the full version in my hands, like…
- 32:28Tad Eggleston: I mean, it dropped… it dropped on Hoopla while I was at work, so, like, I didn't manage… I don't think I finished it while I was still at work, but…
- 32:37Tad Eggleston: But I certainly didn't get to read it carefully.
- 32:39Phil: It's funny.
- 32:39Tad Eggleston: continuously.
- 32:41Tad Eggleston: Because, you know, work.
- 32:43Phil: that also makes sense why you wanted to pull the Audible for it. I mean, not just because you're friends with Ted and Rowe, but also because you hadn't read the end of it before. I was under the assumption that you'd read it, and you.
- 32:57Tad Eggleston: I had, I had not finished.
- 32:58Phil: And you wanted to…
- 33:00Tad Eggleston: Nope.
- 33:00Phil: All right.
- 33:01Tad Eggleston: I had not finished it, and I knew that I was dropping everything to finish it.
- 33:06Tad Eggleston: And I didn't even skip to the part that I'd read already. I read again from the beginning.
- 33:10Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 33:11Tad Eggleston: I mean, even though, honestly, I've read that first 70 or so pages 4 or 5 times, but…
- 33:18Phil: Wow, yeah.
- 33:19Tad Eggleston: But it's just… it's just too good, I had to start again.
- 33:23Tad Eggleston: I mean, also, you never know for certain when, when it's,
- 33:27Tad Eggleston: when you got to read early teaser stuff, whether… whether something might get rearranged or whatever, I haven't… I haven't gone back to… I haven't gone back…
- 33:38Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, I mean, that's sometimes, but… but I haven't gone back to look specifically, specifically, but I think there might have been some pages added in that weren't there when I read it.
- 33:49Phil: That… that makes sense, especially…
- 33:52Tad Eggleston: Not like… not like expanding the story, but I feel like there were a couple of flashback type pages.
- 34:00Phil: Mmm.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: early in the book that I hadn't seen before.
- 34:04Phil: I… I think that was part of it, is that, for me, I wanted to see more of,
- 34:14Phil: Is it Rally?
- 34:15Phil: Is his name, or.
- 34:17Tad Eggleston: Raleigh.
- 34:17Phil: cliff.
- 34:19Phil: I think the…
- 34:21Tad Eggleston: Rawi is the last name, I forget what the first name is.
- 34:26Phil: I think it's Radcliffe. I remember Radcliffe because someone made a joke of he sounds like a cartoon cat.
- 34:32Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 34:32Phil: Heathcliff, you know? Right. But yeah, like, his… his actual career as the worst man, you know? Because, like, it's… it… it's definitely interesting coming in at, like.
- 34:45Phil: his… his final go-around and leaving his future uncertain in a way that you want to keep knowing about it, but also, I don't want him to, like, completely forget about his past, you know? Right.
- 34:58Phil: It sounds funny and relevant. Bless you.
- 35:01Tad Eggleston: Thank you.
- 35:03Phil: But yeah, it… and that's what I meant by, you know, I'd read another… at least, you know… if there was a second volume, I would absolutely read it, you know.
- 35:12Phil: Not saying that it just needed this many more pages, in a general way of, like, oh yeah, I… you know, I love that feeling with a good graphic novel, when it's like, oh yeah, no, I could have kept going. I could have… I could have read the 500-pager epic. It… that it mainly would have taken them, like, several years to make.
- 35:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Yeah, no, I, I definitely… Definitely am on board for… Any and all things.
- 35:43Tad Eggleston: that… Ted and Ro do.
- 35:48Tad Eggleston: But… but this one… This one definitely…
- 35:55Tad Eggleston: Definitely knocks it out of the park.
- 35:59Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 36:00Tad Eggleston: So, so I'm… Yeah, just looking forward to… to more.
- 36:08Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah, any, any final thoughts?
- 36:16Phil: I guess I'd say that I'm looking forward to their next series. I think it's Dreamland? From Vertigo?
- 36:25Tad Eggleston: I believe so.
- 36:26Phil: announced, relative, like, over in YCC, something like that?
- 36:33Tad Eggleston: And they, they, they have their…
- 36:40Tad Eggleston: They have their webtoon comic, too, that they're doing art.
- 36:44Phil: Oh, I wasn't aware of that.
- 36:47Tad Eggleston: It also involves streams.
- 36:50Tad Eggleston: Which is why you threw me for a second. It was being written by somebody else.
- 36:56Phil: Hmm.
- 36:57Tad Eggleston: Doesn't look like they actually have the Dreamland up on their website yet.
- 37:03Phil: Well, that's… that one's the vertigo.
- 37:05Tad Eggleston: Dreambound is what's on Webtoon.
- 37:08Phil: Oh, okay.
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: Revealed as a secret… wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 37:22Tad Eggleston: It actually sounds like, and maybe I just didn't… didn't… realize it…
- 37:30Tad Eggleston: Here at Comic-Con this year, it was reannounced alongside the existing Web2 and Canvas series Dreambound.
- 37:36Tad Eggleston: So… Maybe I just didn't realize… that… That was on the Vertigo…
- 37:49Tad Eggleston: That that was considered under the Vertigo imprint, even though it's a… Tune series.
- 38:01Tad Eggleston: Because it is that book.
- 38:02Phil: Really?
- 38:03Tad Eggleston: Sadie Wilson family.
- 38:06Phil: Interesting.
- 38:11Phil: I don't know how that's all working together, but I just heard of it as a vertigo book.
- 38:16Tad Eggleston: Well, they had… Vertigo had an ash can at New York Comic-Con.
- 38:22Tad Eggleston: But that's the only thing I'm seeing… About it in print.
- 38:28Tad Eggleston: Which doesn't mean that it won't come to print.
- 38:32Tad Eggleston: But, but right now, it's,
- 38:39Tad Eggleston: Started running at the beginning of September, and has now been revealed to be a VertigoGoogle comic all along.
- 38:48Phil: Oh.
- 38:48Tad Eggleston: So maybe they started running it before they announced that it was a Vertigo book.
- 38:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah, actually, I can see the Vertigo book.
- 38:59Tad Eggleston: Just barely in the… in the…
- 39:04Tad Eggleston: In the corner of the circle for the book, on… Tune now.
- 39:14Tad Eggleston: That's 10 chapters in.
- 39:18Tad Eggleston: And I have read it.
- 39:19Tad Eggleston: I enjoy it very much.
- 39:25Tad Eggleston: So… Anyway…
- 39:28Phil: That's funny that that turned out being the same thing.
- 39:31Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 39:33Tad Eggleston: Funny and a little bit sad, because I wanted more!
- 39:37Phil: Oh…
- 39:39Tad Eggleston: Books, I hope, will be spectacular.
- 39:43Tad Eggleston: Six of Us, number two from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta at Dark Horse. The Last Driver, number 3 from Sean Murphy at Image. Forged, number 14.
- 39:56Tad Eggleston: Which might be the last issue, and if it's not the last issue, it's coming awfully close.
- 40:01Phil: Number 15.
- 40:01Tad Eggleston: We're landing on this at 15 is. From Greg Rucka and Eric Troutman and Mike Henderson at Image Comics. Diana comes out this week.
- 40:12Tad Eggleston: Matt Wagner and Kelly Jones, Dracula, Book 3, The Count comes out this week. Both Archie No. 2 and The Forever Home, and…
- 40:21Tad Eggleston: I guess?
- 40:23Tad Eggleston: Minor Arcana, I should have put on this list, or… I don't even know what list I should have put, because I didn't put Minor Arcana
- 40:30Tad Eggleston: So, Minor Arcana is out, number, I think, 19. It's amazing, and if it comes out next week, it's spectacular. Take your pick.
- 40:42Tad Eggleston: We're also finally getting…
- 40:43Phil: Tyler was here to keep us straight on our monitor currently.
- 40:47Tad Eggleston: We also get, Lisa Hannah Walt's I Can't Stop Thinking About Horses and Sex, next week, and an adaptation of Don Quixote from a couple of, legendary Disney animators, Paul and Guyton Brizzy.
- 41:02Phil: to know there's now a comic with a more embarrassing name to say out loud than Sex Criminals.
- 41:09Tad Eggleston: I can't stop thinking about horses and sex.
- 41:12Phil: Yep, that's the one.
- 41:14Tad Eggleston: I don't know, I think Sex Criminals is still more…
- 41:18Phil: See, I can fit sex criminals into a conversation and quickly say that it's also a comic book, but when you say the statement, I can't stop thinking about horses and sex, it's hard to then say, but no, no, that's the title of a book I'm reading, because then it sounds like you're just making.
- 41:32Tad Eggleston: You just start with…
- 41:34Phil: Easy.
- 41:35Tad Eggleston: to start with, I'm reading this great book called… It's not that hard, Phil.
- 41:42Phil: And yet, and yet…
- 41:46Tad Eggleston: And at least I can't stop thinking about horses and sex is thinking, and isn't deliberately, like, something that's bad. It sounds like horses.
- 41:59Phil: I mean…
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: sex. It sounds like…
- 42:01Phil: Yeah. Like…
- 42:02Tad Eggleston: a teenage, early 20s girl, right? But… Sex criminals!
- 42:09Phil: But they're not… they're not that kind of… they're criminals for the life.
- 42:12Tad Eggleston: They're not, but that's not where the brain immediately goes.
- 42:17Phil: Yes, I know.
- 42:21Tad Eggleston: Anyway, your giant-sized Trade Whitaker graphic novel picks, I see you have 3.
- 42:26Phil: I picked 3, because they… there's, Omnibi, or an omnibus for Once and Future, the fantastic modern fantasy series from Kieran Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamara Bonvillen, over at Boom, and, We Only Find Them When They're Dead, the complete series, also, from Boom and Al Ewing and Simone DiMeo. They're books that I chose to read over, sticking with
- 42:50Phil: X-Men and Marvel, and… because it was just…
- 42:53Phil: Yeah, I dropped those, but there's the, Krakoan Age by Kieran Gillen omnibus.
- 42:59Phil: There's also coming out
- 43:00Phil: That looks interesting, but, you know, it's like, I'll read that eventually. But I'm also legitimately excited for Hideout by Masasumi Kakizaki at Abrams Books. That looks fantastic and creepy and disturbing. I thought I was able to check it out on Hoopla, but it said something's gone wrong, so that's made it even creepier, honestly.
- 43:20Phil: No, I'm just.
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: Excellent.
- 43:22Phil: weird.
- 43:23Phil: Shrively ghost thing on Hoopla. Can't… can't wait to read it.
- 43:31Tad Eggleston: That sounds good.
- 43:34Tad Eggleston: And, I think that's actually it for the week, and we'll get you out before 9.
- 43:39Phil: Hmm?
- 43:40Tad Eggleston: The other advantage is taking something new. I don't want to spoil it too much, and I want to plug the hell out of it.
- 43:45Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: So,
- 43:49Phil: Had to… had to hold back from too many spoilers myself.
- 43:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah. For episode 258 of 22 Panels.
- 44:00Tad Eggleston: We will see you after the next page.
