- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Think you know California?
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: You probably are missing the best parts.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Question for you guys: What is it about California that people do not fully understand until they experience it?
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: The first thing that pops into my my mind, Pat, is there's an old west in California.
- 0:21SPEAKER_03: Wyatt Earp spent most of his year years here rather than what people think in Tombstone.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: So Old West.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: Who knew?
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Who knew?
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Liza, you have something to add to that?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think for me, um, it's that you really should just drive everywhere because instead of flying everywhere, I know it's a big state, um, and that it's easier and blah blah blah, more convenient, but it is just so exciting to find all of those tiny little places on the road where you go, wait a minute, what's that?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Let's stop.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: So just drive everywhere in California.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Go on a road trip with your dad if you can.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: That's what we made a show about.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: I want to thank my listeners for either listening or watching to Inspire Travels with Patty.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: If you're new here, I created this podcast and YouTube channel to inspire you to live life more fully.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: And for me, that's through adventure, unique experiences, and exploring new places.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: And today's expert guests are here to share the hidden gems and off-the-be off the beaten path places to visit in California, unique things to do, and travel chips.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Let me introduce Pat Pattison and Eliza to Inspire Travels with Patty, and that is Pat Pattison's best of California.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So we are going to talk about your YouTube channel, your social media.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: You guys have it all.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and you are a TV host, you're a blogger, you have social media, YouTube channel, so much.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: You were an executive for Disney.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna jump in.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the show, first of all.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna let you talk about some of that experience.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: You, Pat, were the executive, an executive at Disney.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, in fact, this isn't really me, Pat.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: It's an it's an animatronic.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm not saying there you go.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, so I was a Disneyland exec uh years ago, former life pretty much, and at Disneyland and at the Disney Studios.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: So there's just a lot I know about the history.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: My family came to California in the 1880s, and so we've been here an unusually long time.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Most people are from somewhere else, and uh we just have lived a lot of the history.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: I grew up in Orange County, so Disney was obviously a place that I always aspired to.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: So I've been very lucky, and then this most recent chapter doing the show with my daughter, Liza's been uh a bonus, a bonus round.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: So let's get in and talk.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: How did that get created?
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Whose idea was it?
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: You're sitting around the kitchen table.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: How do you come up with, hey, we're gonna travel California together and you know, create content?
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: How did that happen?
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Tell the story.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: Well, to be honest, I mean Liza was my inspiration.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: She she's been an actress all of her life, and I would sit in the audience looking at her up on stage, and I'd go, God, that looks like fun.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: So about 20 years ago, I started doing commercials.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I got into commercials, I did some television, and then somebody said, you know, you'd be a good uh news person.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: And so I started doing news segments and that kind of thing, and it just evolved into me interviewing people, and and there used to be a guy here in Southern California named Hulk Hauser, and before him there was a guy named Ralph Story, and they did these kind of quirky, out-of-the-way California stories, and Hull passed away about a very beloved guy, uh, passed away about 10 years ago, and I just said, you know, somebody should still be doing that.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: There is plenty of bad news about California that people like to harp on, and I said, we need an outlet for good news.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: So that's that's how it got started.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: So, Liza, when he came to you and told you about this idea, what was your response?
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, to be checking out cool places and historical places and nature and all the best food in California, I was pretty excited.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: That tells the truth about when I would drive you around and give you history lessons.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Yes, so um, my my theory on how the show got started was that um I would get driven around by dad and we'd be listening to his um tapes and his CDs in the car um because he was teaching me about real music.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: And um we would be going around Los Angeles, usually the Hollywood area, and he'd be pointing out the Mulholland Fountain.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: He'd be pointing out Capitol Records, he'd be pointing out all these things, and um, he would say, Now did I ever tell you the story about that building?
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: And I would just go, Dad, yes.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: You told me seven times.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you the story.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: I know it so well.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Um, and so uh I just think that dad kind of wanted a more captive audience, so he started the show um so that people would um find it him really interesting.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Well, that is incredible.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: And you and I met at the Gaylord Hotel in San Diego.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: We were both there for a conference, it was packed with people, and you came up to me and you asked, because there are a lot of people, including me, walking around with pillows and blankets, and you asked why I was walking around with a pillow, and I was at a retreat, and so yes, we had our our conference head pillows, and so we just hit it off.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: And when you said you go around and do content on California, I knew I had to have you on the show, and then you talked about your daughter, so it was a bonus.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: So I cannot wait.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Let's dive in.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: I'm going to let you pick an area of California that you want to start in or a hidden gem and start with a place that my listeners and I absolutely have to go check out.
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: So the first one that pops into my mind is a little western town called Orcutt, and it's up in the Central Coast, and it is known for recently known for its cuisine.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: So this is a place that you just blow right by on the 101, kind of close to Napomo.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: So there's there's multiple uh places to stop and eat here.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: One very famous one is Jocko's Steakhouse in Napolo.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: And it's it's when I first pulled up to Jocko's, I thought maybe there was a fair in town or a carnival.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: You know, there were 200 carts in this parking lot, and I went, oh, they're all here to eat steak.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: And and then right across the highway is Orcutt, uh Kay's Country Kitchen, um uh incredible pizza there.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: There's a number of local breweries.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: So there's a lot of these little mom and pop places in California uh that that I love to promote and give give support to.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: So that's one place I can pick up right off the bat.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: What about you, Lisa?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: I really liked, I thought it was really magical um kayaking in Lodi.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I just had they're just that with my age, um, I think that there are just still certain places in California that I had never heard of.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: And so um it really is fun when you've never heard of a place.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: And so um, at least for me, I'll admit that I kind of have a judgment about the place before I even visit it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Well, I've never heard of it.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: So what what could be there?
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and it was amazing.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Um, we met some amazing people there.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: We found we always kind of go off um uh besides what we planned on doing.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: We'll find some other things that we get really excited about.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Sometimes that's what it's the best thing to find.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, kayaking around in Lodi was really cool.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: So I highly recommend that.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Where is Lodi in California?
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: Lodi is kind of Central Valley, so it's up in what is very much wine country.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Everybody remembers the song Stuck in Lodi Again.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: I think that's the name.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: It was a Credence Clearwater song.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: Maybe I'm dating myself, maybe nobody remembers it.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: Anyway, there was an old song in my he never does that.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: Stuck in Lodi Again, and they use that in their city motto.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: They say, We're glad we're stuck in Low Dye.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: So that's a hence a great spot up in the central uh central valley.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, and I just want my listeners to know because you've already given a number of great suggestions, these will all be listed in the show notes.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: So for those people just listening, they don't have to take notes on it, that it'll all be there.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, so now we're in Central California.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: What are some other hidden gems?
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: And today's talk is about the hidden gems, the off the beaten path.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: I love finding those out-of-the-way places.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: So what's next?
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: Why does it take one?
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: I better prompt her a little bit.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: There's a city called uh Oroville.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: I was about to make sure that that also because this we do kind of a boomer millennial thing, uh, Pat, where um because I'm so addicted to GPS, I kind of have to wait for dad to tell me is that in that area?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: But um, yes, I'll take it from here.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Um uh there's an amazing Chinese temple in um in a town called Oroville.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: And it is just the most spiritual, well-maintained, just it is it is like um uh I don't want to give a disrespect by saying this because it just is itself, but it's like a movie set.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Um, it is just really worth going to visit.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Um, it you just feel really um relaxed, you feel really centered.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: There is this amazing architecture that have these um round walkways that you go through, um, and they have a lot of amazing history that you find out about how a lot of the um people that were from China that lived there brought all of this amazing culture and that um there's still people that dedicate themselves, they're all volunteers um on preserving that history.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'd love that stuff to have me.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: And I love to kind of dig into the history of places like that and find about out about you know why the Chinese community was there, because of the railroads and then how they stayed, and they even have a they even have a extant is the right word, but uh an old uh Chinese herb uh apothecary that they actually still has the herbs from back in 18, whatever it is.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: So that's incredible.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: And Liza said it best at one point in the interview, but you can see on our YouTube channel, uh you know, if this was in LA, there would be a two-hour line waiting for it, you know.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Swarms.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: There would be swarms.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: So anyway, that was a really good one.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: And and just to let my audience know that a lot of what we're talking about will, or all of what we're talking about, will be on your YouTube channel in depth.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: And the channel is at Patterson's best of California.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Okay, and that'll be put in the show notes.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Already, wow, yes, I have to come back out to California and check these places out.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Where are we going from here?
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, one thing we're doing, I want to mention to your viewers, is we're we're doing a uh uh a deal with the state of California, visiting all the welcome centers here in California.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: All the what?
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: The welcome centers.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: So California has a very robust uh system of over 20 welcome centers regionally, and I really recommend, particularly for seniors, which I am, uh, that they can go to this welcome center and and I I I say, you know, seniors don't have to have an itinerary.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: You know, you've done RV Pat and you kind of need to be inspired.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: Sometimes the the internet isn't enough.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm going to a website.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: If you go to these welcome centers, there's actually people there that can talk to you about the local conditions, the local, you know, is it going to be too hot on that day for me to go here?
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Are there too many steps?
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Too is it too, you know.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: And I really encourage uh people to do these welcome centers.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: And the one we just did was down in uh oceanside, and it has the best surf museum I've ever said.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I'm a lousy intermittent surfer, but I love the ocean, and I grew up in the surf culture, and there's just uh an amazing, uh, amazing surf museum, and it has the kind of uh little but chilling artifact of there was a woman that you may have remembered in the news, uh Brittany Hamilton, who lost an arm.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: She was a surfer to a shark attack.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: And they have her surfboard there, and it's a surfboard with a giant chunk taken out of it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: And uh this woman since then has gotten back to surfing, she's uh a world champion, and it's a very inspirational story.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: So I I love museums and places like that.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And and to your point, the welcome centers as an RVer, that is something that I encourage people to do because yes, you could look at the map, you could do all this research, but going into the welcome centers and talking to the people in there can really shed a lot of light on what's there and so much, such a wealth of information that you probably wouldn't just find out going yourself.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: So definitely, welcome centers are a great place to go.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: There's history there, so if you're taking the kids, it's a great history lesson and just so much to see.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: So that's a a great suggestion.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and they usually have a clean bathroom.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's talk about that.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: That makes the biggest difference when you're on a road trip.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, it is, and we talk about it all on here.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: But I traveled in an RV, like you said, for over three years for people who are new, and we had a class A R V, so it full bathroom, it had it all.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: But there were times, you know, you take the car and you go for a drive, and having those clean bathrooms are very important.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: The other things that a lot of RVers do is we collect stickers.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I don't have my sticker board handy, and so usually in the in those centers, you can find the sticker so you know where you've been.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Where to now?
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: For me, um, when it's something very memorable for Pat Pattison's Vest of California, is if it's cool or if it has to do with nature, or if it's artsy, or if it has really good food.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Um, so one of those places for me was um definitely the Knott's Boysenberry Festival.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Um, might not be much of a hidden gem.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: They probably wouldn't even want to be called that.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Um, but it was cool.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: There is some nature because it was a lot of the stuff was local.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Um, it was artsy.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Um, it was just fantastic.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: So dad and I had a really um fun time just um tasting around at the Boysenberry Festival.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and that's Knott's Berry Farm of Wina Park, which is very close to Disneyland, and it was the first theme park.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: Here's my history nerd park.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, take it away, Dad.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: It was the first theme park in the world and where where boys and berries were invented.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: So the first state park in the world.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: First theme park in the world.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: And where boys and berries were invented.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's incredible.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: That's a great piece of history.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's incredible.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: And I'll piggyback on that with the old West stuff because I'm such a fan of that.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: Is is uh Walter Knott collected buildings, and he went out to old ghost towns all over California and moved the buildings to Buena Park initially because so many people came to their place to eat uh chicken dinners who this is not chicken dinner, and that they did he wanted to give them something to do while they were standing in line, so he put these places around, and that's what created a theme park.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Back back in the 30s and 40s, and my mom used to talk about driving to the beach and stopping and getting the the chicken and the pie.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: So it's quite a quite a local uh history with that one.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if anyone has gone to Knott's and there's your hidden gem, I think.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: If anyone has gone to Knott's Berry Farm for just the rides or just the Boys and Mary Festival, go get their chicken.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: It is incredible.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I have friends who um drive to Wanna Park just to have dinner and eat the chicken there.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Like it really is good.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Wow, and I should have put a warning at the beginning of this.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: I know for myself I'm already hungry thinking about all this food you've been talking about.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: I'm always hungry.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And while we're while we're on Buena Park, um a really cool place that had amazing food um is called The Cauldron.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: And it is a um witch-owned and witch-themed bar.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Roland, California.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: All in California.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Right, that sells um that they um specialize in French cuisine.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And um the woman um used to what what was her role again, Dad?
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: She was she was one of the creative directors at Nottsbury Farm, so she would design the rides and design a lot of the special tracks.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Yes, so of course, because she had that role there, it was the most detailed, like amazing.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: There were there were shadows of cats skittering across cast on the walls.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Like it is a really cool um bar with really good French cuisine.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: So the Cauldron Spirits and Bruise is so good.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: These are places that you go that it's not just going for food, there's an experience there.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: And I really love that.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: It's just, you know, you immerse yourself in it, you don't just go in and eat.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: That's a great suggestion.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: I think people almost expect it now to have an experience.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: And I wish more people, honestly, not to talk anything negative, but would turn the TVs off.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: You know, if you go into a sports bar, that's fine.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: But you go into a restaurant and there's all these TVs on, and I'm not a fan.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: And Pat, you're so right.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: And I'll just give my little speech about the fact, you know, there's so many people.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, you have them where you are, people have them in every state they are.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: They remember that cute little ice cream place that used to be there, and it stopped being there because nobody went to it.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: You know, they were busy going to the McDonald's for something cheaper, they were going to some other store or buying on Amazon.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: You gotta support these places to keep them all.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Every time, like that's the consistency, is like, oh, I'm in a rush.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Like, just just do it.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Making time for it.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Uh yes, that is great advice.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: You know, to just slow down a little bit, make time, have the meal.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: And I know I have three kids and you're rushed and you're working and all of that, but slow down a little bit.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: That's that's what I talk about.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: That's what this podcast is about, like living life more fully.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: So going into those places and being able to take the environment in.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's what it's about.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Stop and smell the orange blossoms, as we say.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: We had the cherry blossoms.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: And that, and and it's a good point because I've lived in Philadelphia pretty much my whole life until I moved out to Las Vegas and then got in the RV.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And Washington, D.C.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: is two hours away.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: And after the cherry blossoms are gone, I always say, Oh, I wish I had gone.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: They look so beautiful.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: It's only two hours away.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: It's that's a car drive.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And this year I swore I was going and I got there.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: And I was so glad.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: You have to, you know, it's great to have the bucket list, but you have to go and do it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Make the plan, get there.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Just just see these things like orange blossoms and cherry blossoms.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: All kinds of things.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Something that just popped into my head also is um sweet treats.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Um, I know dad has a um real sweet tooth, way more than I do.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Um, and so tell them the story about that prank you pulled on me at Torrance Bakery, Dad.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, the uh yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: So I everywhere we go, I try to uh factor in a local a local uh bakery, ice cream joint, best milkshake, best sundae.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: And there's a very famous place in Torrance, California, which is here in the LA area, and Tor it's called the Torrance Bakery.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: And and we uh in advance, we sent the bakery pictures of of myself and Liza, and they were able to make a cake with our faces on them.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: And so Liza was showing up a little later in the shoot.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: And I was so curious why he didn't mind that I was running late.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: So we had these cakes out.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: I was decorating one, and then the woman brought out this cake that had Liza's face on it.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: She was she was surprised, and then you had excuse me, yeah, you almost left the the one part out.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: So after she saw how beautiful it was, I put a mustache on him.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: Just like any dad would do.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: It's gotta be a challenge traveling with him, Liza.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Pranker, Pat.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: He's a pranker.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: You gotta watch yourself with him.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Well, I love the idea of sweets everywhere I go.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: As a matter of fact, I might go out for ice cream tonight just because we're talking about it.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: And finding yes, ice cream Sundays for everyone.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: I I found this little ice cream place because I'm in a new uh town that I've been in, and I just searched ice cream places and I found this little ice cream place, and it's like from I don't know what the year back in the day, like old, not sure what the time frame, but they just they're so warm and welcoming.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: It's so much fun.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: It's an experience, it's a place you go, take the whole family, hang out.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: And those places are great.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: And I want people to know that those places exist in your in your neighborhood, in your area.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: You just got to go look for them.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: We have the the uh distinction of you know, I disparaged McDonald's and whatnot earlier, but McDonald's started here in California in San Burns.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Another piece of history?
- 24:48SPEAKER_03: You could actually do a tour of all the fast food places that have started in California.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: Some of them still exist, but you've got McDonald's, you've got uh Taco Bell, you've got Bob's Big Boy, which we there's still a Bob's Big Boy in old-fashioned, which is a was it showneys, I think, out your way with the big Bob character.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: Um and uh there's a great Bob's Big Boy still in existence in Burbank that we did a segment on where we sat in the booth that the Beatles sat in when they came to LA and played at the Hollywood Bowl.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: Really cool and W Looper, Foster Freeze.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: We don't have that.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: It just goes on and on and on.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Do you have any Altburger?
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: Well, I didn't have found yeah, that's we don't have that one.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, we don't have that.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: You know, when living in Las Vegas, we had it.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: I'm not a fan.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Not a big deal.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: I I think it's what you grow up with.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Cancel the podcast.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: No, I'm just kidding.
- 25:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree with you, Pat.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: It's kind of it's a bit of a marketing thing.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: People gravitate towards long lines.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: I will say that I've been to that Bob's Big Boys a couple of times because my husband was from LA.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: He was born and raised there.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: He was a child actor from the time he was six months old.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: He was a producer, director, he worked on big movies, so that was like we had to go there.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: And it is cool because there is so much history.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: So Bob's Big Boy is one that I could say I recommend.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: So I'll add to the list.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:33unknown: Okay.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: So if Lies is now okay with me.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: What if you have other I've I I've I've calmed down.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: I've calmed down.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Um, well, something that we did um recently um for the opposite of cheeseburgers, um, is that we um went to some amazing fine dining at the Skyroom at the um Fairmont Breakers Hotel, which was incredible.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: And um just the the the they did a lot of um construction.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Dad can speak on the history of this building, but um they really updated Long Beach, California, yeah.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Yes, this is in Long Beach, California.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: And um it is just um amazing what the chef does there, but um more importantly, the history side of it, Dad.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: Can you tell us a little bit about that building?
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, it's just it's just the Long Beach was leveled in an earthquake in 1932.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: It lost virtually, I think it was like 80 or 90 percent of its buildings.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: And this was because the buildings here in California used to be brick and mortar, and then they started very early out the reinforced concrete, and two buildings that were made out of reinforced concrete uh remain standing at this Breakers Hotel was one of them.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: And it's famous for the fact that uh Charles Limberg on one of his uh around the world deals got lost, and he used the beacon at the top of the Breakers Hotel to land his plane.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: So you just have a lot of that kind of, you know, and many, many movie stars have been at the Sky Room, you know, Gary Gragg, Gary Cooper, all those people.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: So you see the pictures of the movie stars.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: So people that come to Southern California and want to do those movie hots, you know, we have a lot of videos about those and and film locations.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: They might have plenty, you know, TV shows like you know, Pat, your husband, that they uh might recognize uh a location, and one of the most famous is out towards Santa Clarita, a place called Vasquez Rocks.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: And Vasquez Rocks has been in every iteration of Star Trek.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: So from the beginning with William Shatner all the way up to Picard or whatever the most recent one is, you'll recognize that because that's that was Santa Clarita, which is probably a half hour um from downtown LA, maybe a little more.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: So it's it's and it's it's famous for the fact that the minute you see it, you go, oh, I've seen this place a dozen times.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: It's got these rocks that go on an angle like this.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: And uh there's a there's a boundary within the uh unions in Los Angeles where it they the unions don't uh get paid for for extra travel, and that boundary was created just to barely include Vasquez Rocks.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: Because they would everything from Dracula to uh you know westerns to you know the Flintstones to everything.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: It's one of the most filmed locations in history, really.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Wow, that is really cool.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: I would see a lot of those type places.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: I didn't we didn't go there, but because of his background, there were places we went to, but that was one, yeah, that'd be really cool.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Speaking of uh recognizable rocks, I didn't know which should we make a book about that then?
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's um I recently um went to Malibu Creek State Park, and they had filmed um some of the Planet of the Apes there, and um also MASH.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: And so there were all these areas where you'd look back on your phone and you'd go, Oh my god, there's that rock.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: So uh Malibu Creek State Park is really cool for if you want to look at some cool rocks too.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a good one.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: My father, that was one of his favorite shows, was MASH.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: So that would be cool to go see.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: The exteriors were shot there.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they have they have some of the old rusty, um, they never took out some of the pieces, the um automobiles and stuff, so they're still there.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: These are really hidden gems, and I don't think a lot of people know about like different things than going just to I know there's you know national parks and things like that.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: These are the kind of things that I've really love.
