SPEAKER_00: Hi Angela.
0:06
SPEAKER_00: Hi Ramon.
0:07
SPEAKER_00: So recently, well, first of all, for work, we travel a lot, but especially you recently, you've been on a plane.
0:13
SPEAKER_01: Yes, several planes, many planes.
0:16
SPEAKER_00: I've been up in the sky.
0:19
SPEAKER_00: What are your biggest icks slash pet peeves when it comes to plane etiquette?
0:24
SPEAKER_00: Yo.
0:24
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
0:25
SPEAKER_00: So the the She's from Brooklyn, yeah.
0:28
SPEAKER_01: This the thing that has come up over and over again, I think, is about personal space.
0:35
SPEAKER_01: We're not talking about your standard, like who gets the armrest or whatever.
0:40
SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking more, you know, the person who sits in the aisle seat and puts their like leg out into the aisle so that everybody trips on it because they feel like they don't have enough room.
0:49
SPEAKER_00: But you, if you're a flight attendant, you have every right to rent over that foot.
0:52
SPEAKER_01: You could, please.
0:54
SPEAKER_01: Uh I do feel like this is usually uh guys who think that they're very tall, but they're not.
1:00
SPEAKER_00: Or guys who have something to prove.
1:02
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:03
SPEAKER_01: There was another situation in which I had a guy sitting behind me and he told me he didn't want me to recline my chair because he was too tall.
1:11
SPEAKER_00: It's always a man.
1:12
SPEAKER_00: It's not there.
1:13
SPEAKER_00: It's always a man.
1:14
SPEAKER_01: It's always a man.
1:14
SPEAKER_01: He was like, he's so short.
1:16
SPEAKER_01: I'm like 5'9.
1:17
SPEAKER_01: I'm like 5'9.
1:18
SPEAKER_00: So 5'7 at best on a good day.
1:21
SPEAKER_01: Right.
1:21
SPEAKER_01: Another one that I really dislike is when somebody sitting behind you gets up and they pull on your seat pack.
1:29
SPEAKER_01: And you'll be here like, yeah.
1:30
SPEAKER_01: No, because it's this thing of it's a shock and you feel like the plane's falling out of the sky for a minute.
1:37
SPEAKER_01: And I get it.
1:38
SPEAKER_01: Some people have a hard time moving around.
1:41
SPEAKER_01: But may I demonstrate something for all of you?
1:44
SPEAKER_01: You have two armrests next to you.
1:49
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
1:50
SPEAKER_01: So if you can't just stand from a seated position, that's an easy way to do it without disturbing anyone, if you can.
1:57
SPEAKER_01: If you have mobility issues to the point where you have to do that, I understand.
2:00
SPEAKER_01: I understand.
2:01
SPEAKER_01: Another thing, people putting their bare feet like on the foot rest in front of them.
2:06
SPEAKER_01: Somebody did this to me recently, and I gave her the dirtiest look because she touched my arm with her bare foot.
2:12
SPEAKER_00: Funny story about this.
2:13
SPEAKER_00: I was flying from London to Venice, I believe.
2:17
SPEAKER_00: And it was like a little Ryan airplane.
2:19
SPEAKER_00: We were the first, first, first row.
2:20
SPEAKER_00: You know, in the first row, you have that wall in front of you, and it was husband, me, this girl next to me.
2:26
SPEAKER_00: And then all of a sudden, it just smelled rank off deli meat.
2:29
SPEAKER_00: Come to find out, this girl next to me took off her shoes and was putting her feet on the wall part, but it smelled disgusting.
2:35
SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, do you not have the awareness that you smell really bad?
2:38
SPEAKER_01: You were getting a preview of Venice.
2:40
SPEAKER_00: Tea, Venice smells nasty, underwhelming.
2:43
SPEAKER_00: Don't recommend.
2:44
SPEAKER_00: Deli meat, very Italian.
2:45
SPEAKER_00: Question for you.
2:46
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
2:47
SPEAKER_00: Aisle, middle, or window seat.
2:48
SPEAKER_00: I'm an aisle person.
2:50
SPEAKER_00: I'm the middle person because I love being touched on both sides.
2:54
SPEAKER_00: No, just kidding, like window.
2:57
SPEAKER_01: I've never heard somebody say they prefer the middle.
3:00
SPEAKER_01: For me, it's about I need to have the freedom to just like get up whenever I want.
3:05
SPEAKER_01: If I want to get something from the overhead, I don't know.
3:07
SPEAKER_01: I have to pee a lot.
3:09
SPEAKER_01: So you're one of those.
3:10
SPEAKER_01: You'd be getting up on the plane.
3:11
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
3:12
SPEAKER_01: I mean, unless it's like a red eye or something where I'm trying to sleep through it, sometimes I just need to move too.
3:17
SPEAKER_01: Take a walk.
3:18
SPEAKER_01: I'll go get an extra snack.
3:20
SPEAKER_00: Like As someone who flies international so much, I hate being an inconvenience to people.
3:25
SPEAKER_00: I hate getting up.
3:26
SPEAKER_00: So unless the person next to me gets up and I have the ability to, and plus, because it's usually me and my husband, we like to get the two on the side of the plane.
3:32
SPEAKER_00: So it's just us two, because I have no problem bothering him.
3:34
SPEAKER_00: I will get up on a plane as little as possible.
3:38
SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
3:39
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
3:39
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
3:40
SPEAKER_01: For me, you know, I'm not gonna get up all the time if I'm not seated on the aisle.
3:44
SPEAKER_01: That's because I don't want to inconvenience anyone.
3:47
SPEAKER_01: I was on a flight recently where um, you know, we were just two next to each other and I had the window.
3:52
SPEAKER_01: I only got up when my seat mate got up because I didn't want to bother him.
3:56
SPEAKER_01: He was also flying with a kid in front of us.
4:00
SPEAKER_01: I almost intervened because I was like, gotta get this in order.
4:04
SPEAKER_01: I am very maternal.
4:06
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I have a lot of patience for people flying with children now since I've flown with a child so much.
4:12
SPEAKER_01: And you know what?
4:13
SPEAKER_01: My take on it is I used to get annoyed, but now I paid for a C2.
4:20
SPEAKER_01: If she wants to scream this whole time, she can.
4:22
SPEAKER_00: That's my deal, is I feel like we got into this mode, and I blame millennials for this.
4:26
SPEAKER_00: They're like very anti-kid.
4:28
SPEAKER_00: They hate kids.
4:29
SPEAKER_00: And I understand if you don't want to have a kid, you got the autonomy to do so.
4:32
SPEAKER_00: But there are people who are just so violently against being in the presence of children, especially in a plane, that I'm just like, you were once a kid, and being as annoying as you are now, you're probably even more annoying as a kid.
4:42
SPEAKER_00: Remember that.
4:43
SPEAKER_00: So when people have all these complaints about children crying and screaming on airplanes, I'm like, remember where you are and like the extent of that experience for a young or small child, the discomfort, the pain.
4:56
SPEAKER_00: Like, where's the compassion?
4:59
SPEAKER_00: Where's the empathy?
5:00
SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
5:02
SPEAKER_00: Where I lose that though is when I'm getting off the plane and I see where the co the kids were sitting, crumbs, mess, like just disaster in that seat.
5:10
SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, someone has to clean this.
5:12
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
5:13
SPEAKER_01: You try to keep that to a minimum for sure.
5:15
SPEAKER_01: And not to say that I don't try to keep my kid quiet on the plane.
5:19
SPEAKER_01: I do, but sometimes there are things you can't control, especially like infants.
5:24
SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think people need to remember you're in public, you are a member of the public.
5:29
SPEAKER_00: If you don't like the plane, take the train or walk or swim.
5:33
SPEAKER_01: You're not flying private.
5:35
SPEAKER_01: None of us are.
5:36
SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm not.
5:38
SPEAKER_00: I've never flown private private.
5:39
SPEAKER_01: I've never flown private private.
5:40
SPEAKER_01: Question for you.
5:42
SPEAKER_00: Speaking of plane etiquette, pooping on planes.
5:44
SPEAKER_01: I mean, obviously you avoid it, but I think sometimes I have never.
5:50
SPEAKER_01: Thank god, thank god.
5:52
SPEAKER_01: I have never gotten sick on a plane.
5:56
SPEAKER_01: But from a lot of places, you know, people when they're traveling, traveler's diarrhea, this, that, the third happens.
6:04
SPEAKER_01: I understand.
6:05
SPEAKER_01: Um, you're not gonna have them land the plane for that, but try not to, for sure.
6:10
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's the same thing on I don't know, a bus, a train, whatever.
6:15
SPEAKER_01: A car.
6:15
SPEAKER_01: Try not to drop a deuce in the car.
6:17
SPEAKER_01: Yes.
6:18
SPEAKER_00: It happens on the sidewalk, it's New York.
6:20
SPEAKER_01: It happens.
6:21
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, yes, it does.
6:23
SPEAKER_01: Sadly.
6:24
SPEAKER_01: Storytime?
6:24
SPEAKER_01: No, please no.
6:26
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you're walking around the city and you're like, was that a dog?
6:31
SPEAKER_01: The world may never know.
6:32
SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you're walking around the city and you witness it happening, but I guess it's New York.
6:40
SPEAKER_00: It's New York, baby.
6:42
SPEAKER_00: What's your favorite season?
6:44
SPEAKER_01: Summer.
6:45
SPEAKER_00: Summer.
6:46
SPEAKER_01: How about you?
6:48
SPEAKER_00: It's summer.
6:48
SPEAKER_00: I'm a hot weather girl.
6:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, me too.
6:51
SPEAKER_00: I'm from Florida, I'm Puerto Rican, like I thrive in the heat in the summer.
6:56
SPEAKER_00: My big thing is now living in New York.
7:00
SPEAKER_00: New York in the summer is nasty.
7:02
SPEAKER_00: It's thick, it's heavy.
7:03
SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of sensorial experiences, especially aromatically.
7:09
SPEAKER_01: Am I wrong?
7:10
SPEAKER_01: I mean, there is things like, yeah, being in the subway, hot garbage, things like the hot garbage, yes.
7:19
SPEAKER_01: Uh, I mean, I like being in New York in the summer.
7:22
SPEAKER_01: I feel like there's always lots to do.
7:24
SPEAKER_01: You could go to the beach, you could, you know, at night things feel, you know, alive and sexy.
7:32
SPEAKER_01: And but I love it.
7:35
SPEAKER_01: But what keeps you feeling sexy during the summertime?
7:40
SPEAKER_00: Um being as unsweaty and unsticky as possible, which is nearly impossible.
7:47
SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm very self-conscious of the way I potentially smell to people.
7:53
SPEAKER_00: Really?
7:54
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
7:55
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
7:55
SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, just like you overly or hyper perceive your own self.
8:00
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
8:00
SPEAKER_00: To an extent people don't.
8:01
SPEAKER_00: So I'm always just like, wait, what do I smell like?
8:03
SPEAKER_00: Or like, do I look really sweaty right now?
8:05
SPEAKER_00: So that's something I'm I'm very like self-conscious about.
8:08
SPEAKER_00: So it's I'm like anti-perspirated down.
8:12
SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
8:13
SPEAKER_00: Sprayed down in fragrance.
8:16
SPEAKER_00: I take like two or three showers a day.
8:18
SPEAKER_00: What?
8:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
8:20
SPEAKER_00: Three showers a day.
8:21
SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's a lot.
8:22
SPEAKER_00: I don't like being sweaty.
8:24
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
8:24
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
8:25
SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, I definitely can understand that.
8:29
SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of the time people are more self-conscious about body odor than uh like people around them are.
8:37
SPEAKER_01: I definitely think that we don't need to be odorless as humans, but at the same time, yeah, there are ways to handle that if one is self-conscious.
8:48
SPEAKER_01: And I think people are getting more and more creative.
8:52
SPEAKER_00: So everybody's so creative.
8:54
SPEAKER_01: As we're talking about getting our summer bodies ready, dealing with the heat and sweating.
9:00
SPEAKER_01: So I think one of the primary uh approaches to this is decreasing the amount of sweating.
9:07
SPEAKER_01: We don't want to decrease it all the way, because evaporative cooling is important.
9:13
SPEAKER_01: It is.
9:14
SPEAKER_01: But uh, especially for people who have hyperhydrosis, which is a condition of excessive sweating that interferes with somebody's daily life, we definitely have options, the first of which being aluminum chloride.
9:29
SPEAKER_01: Oh, do you know what I'm just kidding?
9:31
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the easiest thing.
9:32
SPEAKER_01: An antiperspirant that you could get over the counter.
9:35
SPEAKER_01: Usually they're marked clinical strength.
9:38
SPEAKER_01: Um, and the idea behind this is that the aluminum salts provide a temporary plug for the sweat glands.
9:46
SPEAKER_01: This can also be used other areas on the body.
9:49
SPEAKER_01: It's not necessarily the most elegant for that, but it could be used on the soles of the feet, on the palms of the hands.
9:57
SPEAKER_01: One tip that people don't understand with this is that you're supposed to put it on at night.
10:03
SPEAKER_01: The reason behind this is most people sweat less in their sleep than they do when they're awake.
10:09
SPEAKER_01: And you want to give that aluminum salt time to actually form its temporary plug.
10:16
SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, you know, if you immediately start sweating, it will be sort of washed away.
10:21
SPEAKER_00: Correct.
10:22
SPEAKER_00: It has to interact with specific proteins in order to form those gel plugs, and so allowing it the time while you sleep to like marinade to be able to do that is going to be a lot more effective the day after to reduce sweating and reduce odor.
10:36
SPEAKER_01: A lot of people have been anti-aluminum in deodorants recently, and there's no reason to have any sort of uh concern about that from a safety standpoint as it stands with the data that we have.
10:49
SPEAKER_01: Those aluminum salts can be irritating in some cases, which that's a different story, um, depending on how sensitive one's skin is.
10:57
SPEAKER_00: Well, the whole thing with someone, I don't even know if it was a misconstrued study or just made something up entirely about a link to breast cancer or something like that.
11:04
SPEAKER_00: There's no link, there's literally no evidence to suggest that at all.
11:08
SPEAKER_01: So don't believe everything that you've heard.
11:12
SPEAKER_01: Uh there's so many memes out there right now that are like some of you need the aluminum, which I think is a little bit judgmental.
11:20
SPEAKER_01: Uh, but for you know, other kinds of hyperhydrosis that do interact with people's daily functioning, we have like medical treatments either orally.
11:32
SPEAKER_01: Um, there are devices that could be used, and even uh botulinum toxin injections uh that are helpful for uh focal hyperhydrosis, which means uh particular areas where people have excessive sweating.
11:46
SPEAKER_01: So that's something that we can use for underarms, for the hands, uh, for the feet, uh, sometimes craniofacial.
11:55
SPEAKER_01: So we'll use it in the skin superficially on the scalp and the forehead to reduce sweating there for people who have excessive sweating in those areas.
12:07
SPEAKER_01: So uh I would say uh talk to your doctor or seek out a dermatologist being the first uh step if somebody thinks that they have true hyperhydrosis.
12:20
SPEAKER_01: For everybody else, though, there are other options on the market now.
12:23
SPEAKER_01: So one thing that I've seen a lot in deodorants as opposed to antiperspirants now is just acids changing the pH.
12:33
SPEAKER_00: Correct.
12:34
SPEAKER_00: So body odor is a result of specific bacteria essentially excreting waste and they feed off of sweat.
12:40
SPEAKER_00: And in the areas where they proliferate, which is like auxiliary areas, is that what you say it?
12:45
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so the apocrine sweat glands are the ones that produce the uh the molecules that the bacteria can feed on, and those are in the axilla, the groin, and the gluteal region.
13:00
SPEAKER_00: And those tend to have a higher pH than the standard, like everywhere else skin.
13:06
SPEAKER_00: So utilizing, we see a lot of brands uh do mandelic acid or a really famous hack with the ordinary glycolic acid as well, is utilizing it in those areas because it drops the pH down so that those bacteria can't have as uh hospitable of an environment as they need.
13:22
SPEAKER_01: Another approach to this, since I don't know, putting um full-out like glycolic acid toner on an opposing surface can be very irritating, is using some sort of uh uh cleanser with a chemical exfoliant in the shower, or people are also turning to things like benzoyl peroxide wash for this to the underarms to just cut down on bacterial burden there, which can also be helpful.
13:51
SPEAKER_01: I've seen other people using uh chlorhexidine for this.
13:55
SPEAKER_01: I don't think people should be using chlorhexidine.
13:58
SPEAKER_01: So it is present in mouthwashes in Europe, I believe, but it's something called uh HIBACleanse brand name here, and it's this like pink surgical scrub that we use in medicine that you could also get at the pharmacy.
14:13
SPEAKER_01: Personally, I don't think that people should be using chlorhexidine unless directed by a physician.
14:20
SPEAKER_01: So, um, especially because it it's a substance you want to be careful with.
14:25
SPEAKER_01: It could be toxic to eyes and ears, so it's something you just really need to be intentional about.
14:31
SPEAKER_01: And I think people should only be using it if a doctor tells them to.
14:35
SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, those are some different approaches.
14:39
SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, going back to the whole acid of it all, a lot of the all-over deodorants that we've been seeing on the market, that's the ingredient story that they use.
14:50
SPEAKER_01: Um, because they're changing the pH, but it's gentle enough that it could be used multiple sites on the body.
14:57
SPEAKER_00: Correct.
14:57
SPEAKER_00: Although irritation is always going to be an option because it's 5% usually I see, and I'm just like, if you're using that every day, or if you're having to reapply multiple times a day because you're like, you little reap.
15:07
SPEAKER_00: That anytime using an acid, that is a likelihood.
15:10
SPEAKER_00: The other thing, the two other things I see a lot is zinc.
15:12
SPEAKER_00: I think it's zinc rissinoli.
15:14
SPEAKER_00: I can't remember the full name of the ingredient right now.
15:16
SPEAKER_00: It's just a deodorizer.
15:18
SPEAKER_00: And it uh reduces odor, basically.
15:22
SPEAKER_00: We see that in antipers, sorry, we see that in deodorant products to reduce odor, but also it's just used in formulas to reduce the smell of other ingredients sometimes.
15:30
SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
15:31
SPEAKER_00: And then hyperabsorbent powders, because basically, when it comes to reducing body odor, is the bacteria, the sweat, and then any odor that is produced regardless.
15:41
SPEAKER_00: So if you're sopping up all of that sweat, that can also reduce the likelihood of odor.
15:46
SPEAKER_00: But that being said, I'm like, if you're a really sweaty person and you're just like getting all this powder really wet, that feels like a very uncomfortable situation.
15:53
SPEAKER_00: Powder cakes.
15:55
SPEAKER_00: You're making little cakes.
15:56
SPEAKER_00: Yummy.
15:57
SPEAKER_00: Ew.
15:57
SPEAKER_00: Low carb, low carb.
15:58
SPEAKER_00: Low carb.
15:59
SPEAKER_00: But you see that a lot more with body deodorants.
16:02
SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they have it here in the US, but in the UK, I think Dove or one of those brands have these body lotion deodorants, and that was a big factor is um they use these powders, and I think the zinc risenolia ingredient.
16:16
SPEAKER_00: One size, they have a sweat-reducing primer, and one of the main ingredients of that is the specific powder again that just sops up that sweat.
16:26
SPEAKER_00: There's also an extract that allegedly helps with, I don't know if it helps with odor or it helps with sweat or something, but it's a complex that gets sold.
16:32
SPEAKER_00: So there's options.
16:33
SPEAKER_00: But that being said, an antiperspirant salt is really where it's at.
16:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
16:38
SPEAKER_01: When it comes to other, you know, body concerns when we're getting summer ready.
16:45
SPEAKER_01: Do you usually change your approach to like moisturizers or I can't do lotions?
16:53
SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
16:54
SPEAKER_00: The minute I do a lotion on my body and I start to sweat, really, I'm like slimy and slinky and I hate that feeling.
17:00
SPEAKER_00: So I tend to use really light oils.
17:02
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
17:03
SPEAKER_00: So I do love a body oil.
17:04
SPEAKER_00: If not, I'm really just relying on a more nourishing body cleanser.
17:08
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
17:09
SPEAKER_00: So there's really the high glycerin content cleansers really help a lot.
17:14
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
17:14
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for me, I tend to switch to just lighter body moisturizers.
17:19
SPEAKER_01: Ooh, milky toners.
17:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that could be helpful too.
17:22
SPEAKER_01: I think uh one thing that I I often preach about for people who are too lazy to moisturize their body after showering are in-shower moisturizers.
17:32
SPEAKER_01: So those are moisturizers that you turn off the water, you put it on your body, and then you towel off when you're when you're done.
17:41
SPEAKER_01: Um, and they confer moisturizing properties or spray moisturizers, which tend to be very light.
17:49
SPEAKER_01: And those could be helpful in situations where you want something that's not going to be too heavy, too greasy, uh, coming out of the shower if you need some moisture.
17:59
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, those are really good options.
18:00
SPEAKER_00: We were talking about this earlier.
18:01
SPEAKER_00: We have a friend, her name is Lily, Cave of Beauty.
18:04
SPEAKER_00: She talks about a lot of these hacks in regards to mobility issues or having chronic illness and not having the physical energy or actual ability to apply certain things.
18:13
SPEAKER_00: Um, she's a big fan of those spray moisturizers.
18:15
SPEAKER_00: I didn't know about those until her.
18:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, no, I I think it's a great tool for not just, you know, summer, but also, yeah, as you said, people with mobility issues.
18:25
SPEAKER_01: I found that, yeah, a lot of my patients that either even have like arthritis or like maybe more elderly people who can't really easily bend down or reach certain areas, that that's very helpful for them.
18:38
SPEAKER_01: One thing that I will say about the spray moisturizers is to always make sure you're doing it on some sort of a mat or a towel because if they land on your floor, it gets slippery.
18:48
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it happened to me.
18:49
SPEAKER_00: I did that, so not exactly spray moisturizer.
18:52
SPEAKER_00: I was applying a spray body SPF, and I'm like, I know it's gonna make a mess.
18:55
SPEAKER_00: Let me do this in the shower.
18:56
SPEAKER_00: Girl.
18:59
SPEAKER_00: I almost ate shit in the shower.
19:02
SPEAKER_01: Speaking of uh body SPF, this is definitely a time that we need to be thinking about it if you're exposing more skin.
19:11
SPEAKER_01: So are you putting on body SPF every day during the summer?
19:16
SPEAKER_00: It's dependent on what's exposed slash what the day is consisting of.
19:21
SPEAKER_00: If not, UPF clothing is a really great option as well.
19:25
SPEAKER_00: Plugging Soleil.
19:26
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it definitely is.
19:28
SPEAKER_01: So I think one of the issues that people don't realize is putting uh sunscreen over large portions of the body or remembering reapplication can be difficult.
19:40
SPEAKER_01: A lot of the time, people either aren't using enough or they're not going to reapply throughout the day.
19:45
SPEAKER_01: That's part of the reason why I wanted to create some protective clothing that really fits into people's daily lives.
19:52
SPEAKER_01: Or some protective shirt, shirt one was actually designed to be something that you could also just like throw in your bag, take with you, and right before you go outside, you could put it on.
20:03
SPEAKER_01: It has convertible features like a collar that stands up and uh hand coverings, uh, but it could also just be worn like a regular button-down shirt.
20:14
SPEAKER_01: So that's definitely something to consider.
20:17
SPEAKER_01: I always say people should have a complete sun protective strategy, so that's sunscreen, sun protective clothes, checking the UV index and using that to potentially decide what times you're gonna do things outdoors.
20:32
SPEAKER_01: I think that's very important too.
20:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, and seeking shade when possible.
20:37
SPEAKER_00: I agree.
20:37
SPEAKER_00: But like realistically, it's I love showing body, so I will be lathered up.
20:43
SPEAKER_00: I again going back to what I texture-wise, I prefer an oil.
20:47
SPEAKER_00: Solitaire has a gorgeous, uh like bronzy oil.
20:50
SPEAKER_00: Bronze comes from like a shimmer that's in there.
20:52
SPEAKER_00: That's really nice.
20:54
SPEAKER_00: Um, I use some of my lighter my lighter weight face sunscreens on my body because I have so many of them.
20:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
20:59
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then if not, my favorite like body sunscreen is$10.
21:04
SPEAKER_00: And it's from Neutrogena.
21:05
SPEAKER_00: It's the yellow one, the SPF 70.
21:07
SPEAKER_00: That smells so good to me.
21:09
SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's sport, right?
21:11
SPEAKER_01: It's sport one.
21:12
SPEAKER_00: Beach defense, beach defense.
21:14
SPEAKER_00: Beach defense.
21:15
SPEAKER_01: Yes.
21:15
SPEAKER_00: Um, or because again, a sensory moment, how am I building up my scent routine for the day?
21:20
SPEAKER_00: Uh, either sunbum or vacation.
21:23
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, vacation makes really nice sunscreens.
21:27
SPEAKER_01: I've also found, you know, LaRoche Posey, the Anthelios line, their melt in milk is really nice.
21:35
SPEAKER_01: Uh, they also have a cooling version, which feels good on the skin.
21:40
SPEAKER_01: Another thing that I think people should look for is water resistance when it comes to these body sunscreens.
21:47
SPEAKER_01: So that has to do with sweat, but also submerging your body in water if you're doing and some of them are even sand resistant.
21:54
SPEAKER_01: Wow.
21:54
SPEAKER_00: That's like a big La Roche L'Oreal cream.
21:57
SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah.
21:58
SPEAKER_01: So those water resistance.
22:00
SPEAKER_01: Claims are something that we're gonna want to look for, if we're gonna be, I don't know, doing water sports or not like that, uh, or you know, working out outside, or if you're just a sweaty person.
22:13
SPEAKER_00: Yes, because realistically, that is something where people deal with sweat, even if you're just walking out and about.
22:18
SPEAKER_00: I get really specifically right here, I get really sweaty.
22:21
SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's the reality.
22:22
SPEAKER_00: Without exerting a lot of effort, some people just tend to sweat more.
22:25
SPEAKER_00: That should probably be a default option.
22:27
SPEAKER_01: I also think a lot of people aren't aware of the fact that we have research showing that increasing the SPF uh in situations where we're gonna have extensive sun exposure or be outdoors for long periods of time has been shown to be more protective against burning.
22:45
SPEAKER_01: So I tell my patients if you're in one of those situations, take it up to an SPF 100, go all the way up.
22:53
SPEAKER_01: The reason that it's more protective probably has more to do with how good people are at applying and reapplying.
23:00
SPEAKER_01: But in those situations, uh, you don't want to be a lobster at the end of it.
23:07
SPEAKER_01: I was just in Mexico and the amount of people that I saw that were sunburnt.
23:11
SPEAKER_00: It's better to be safe than sorry.
23:12
SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
23:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and don't believe everything you hear with all you need is a 30.
23:17
SPEAKER_01: Not all the time.
23:18
SPEAKER_00: And every sunburn you get that cumulative sun exposure increases your risk of seeing cancer, melanoma.
23:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
23:25
SPEAKER_00: Stay protected, play safe.
23:27
SPEAKER_00: Going back to body concerns, like general body concerns people have, especially if you're wanting to expose more skin during the summer.
23:33
SPEAKER_00: And these are normal things, but if it's something that you want to address or reduce the appearance of um discoloration in certain parts of the body, what are your favorite remedies or hacks for those?
23:44
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, a lot of it will mirror what we say about the face.
23:50
SPEAKER_01: So sun protection is key.
23:52
SPEAKER_01: Very aggressive sun protection, but you could also turn to things like acids, uh, specifically in body washes, body retinoids.
24:02
SPEAKER_01: I love a good body retinol.
24:04
SPEAKER_00: What's your favorite?
24:05
SPEAKER_00: Uh spot.
24:06
SPEAKER_01: Noturium, their body retinol.
24:08
SPEAKER_01: She's cute.
24:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very gold bond, ten dollars.
24:11
SPEAKER_00: Great option, too.
24:12
SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
24:13
SPEAKER_00: I'm a huge goldbond fan.
24:14
SPEAKER_00: People don't talk about enough affordable, great formulations.
24:18
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for body exfoliance too, you could turn to something like uh ammonium lactate, so am lactin.
24:25
SPEAKER_00: Oh, am lactin, yeah.
24:27
SPEAKER_01: Which I always say is one of the silver bullets for KP too.
24:31
SPEAKER_01: Uh it doesn't smell the best, but the smell dissipates once it's rubbed into the skin and it's so cost-effective.
24:42
SPEAKER_00: A personal favorite that people love to tell me works great for pigmentary concerns and texture on the body, the notorium glycolic acid body wash, which I famously talk about using it from like head to face to body.
24:52
SPEAKER_00: It's formulated with something called coacervation, which means that even when you rinse the body wash off, the glycolic acid's actually still on your skin.
25:00
SPEAKER_00: So you will see benefits from it in a really gentle manner.
25:02
SPEAKER_00: And people say it works great for like areas of discoloration on the body.
25:07
SPEAKER_01: Don't hate coacervate.
25:09
SPEAKER_00: Period.
25:12
SPEAKER_00: Um, is there any products for the body specifically that mention like targeting hyperpigmentation or reducing the look of darkness?
25:19
SPEAKER_00: Like a specific pigmentary focus product.
25:22
SPEAKER_00: I can think of like Slather from Topicals.
25:24
SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to think of anything like more affordable.
25:27
SPEAKER_01: Slather is really nice.
25:28
SPEAKER_01: I think they have both a retinoid and an acid in it.
25:30
SPEAKER_01: Correct.
25:31
SPEAKER_00: And I think urea too.
25:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
25:33
SPEAKER_00: Gorgeous product.
25:34
SPEAKER_00: I think that's one of Topicals' best products.
25:37
SPEAKER_00: It is.
25:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean.
25:40
SPEAKER_00: Well, point being, clearly, we're talking about a lot of products.
25:42
SPEAKER_00: When it comes to personally, my perspective, pigmentation, it's a very complex issue.
25:47
SPEAKER_00: Therefore, you really do have to address it from like a lot of different points to really see good results.
25:53
SPEAKER_01: Cyclore uh makes a glycolic acid spray that I really like.
25:58
SPEAKER_00: Ooh, they do.
25:59
SPEAKER_00: I just hate after you spray that.
26:00
SPEAKER_00: It's like in the air and you inhale that shit.
26:02
SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
26:04
SPEAKER_01: Don't spray it near your face.
26:06
SPEAKER_01: Do it in a well-ventilated area too.
26:08
SPEAKER_01: Yes.
26:09
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
26:10
SPEAKER_00: Um, another concern in groans.
26:13
SPEAKER_01: Ooh, yeah, that's hard because uh for certain people, based on hair texture, it could be a little bit worse.
26:22
SPEAKER_01: There are ways of you know reducing the risk for it.
26:25
SPEAKER_01: So trimming hair down rather than shaving it all the way down, very helpful.
26:31
SPEAKER_00: Glycolic acid before you shave, like the day before, and then regularly exfoliating that area the days after to reduce the likelihood of uh the hair essentially staying in the follicle and getting it ingrown.
26:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
26:47
SPEAKER_01: And now there are specific products for like, you know, between me down there.
26:52
SPEAKER_01: Um Keels makes one, uh Topicals High Roller.
26:57
SPEAKER_00: Amazing product as well.
26:58
SPEAKER_00: Very nice.
27:00
SPEAKER_01: Really?
27:01
SPEAKER_00: I can't get that ball to roll half the time, but I love the concept of that product.
27:04
SPEAKER_00: If they can make that smoother, game changer.
27:07
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really like that one.
27:09
SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I think exfoliation is probably key.
27:13
SPEAKER_01: Retinoids can be helpful for in grohns too, but not something uh that I feel that most people should be putting on the areas that they're shaving.
27:24
SPEAKER_01: Well, the areas where they get in grohnes.
27:26
SPEAKER_01: So if we're talking about pubic area, underarms, retinoids are not great there, but if you're getting in grounds on your legs or something, yeah.
27:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
27:35
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then I guess last major topic feet.
27:38
SPEAKER_00: Because when the weather's out or when the sun's out, toes are out.
27:45
SPEAKER_00: If you love that.
27:46
SPEAKER_00: But for me, it's just like um I've seen a lot of questions and comments from like other derms talking about things like rough and cracked heels, yellow nails.
27:55
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
27:56
SPEAKER_00: It's like a lot of things with feet.
27:57
SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of concerns there, and that's more of the Angelo side of things.
28:00
SPEAKER_01: So urea 40% cream.
28:03
SPEAKER_00: Urea, myrea, aurea.
28:06
SPEAKER_01: Aurea.
28:07
SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, that's kind of my go-to for like really flaky or like dry feet.
28:16
SPEAKER_01: Um, it's also kind of moisturizing, so it could help with the crackedness of it somewhat.
28:22
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I I think that's that's kind of my number one.
28:25
SPEAKER_01: You could also do a good ointment like a Vaseline or an aquifer.
28:31
SPEAKER_00: Or like an inclusive.
28:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
28:33
SPEAKER_01: So one thing that I like to tell people to do is to do a foot soak.
28:38
SPEAKER_01: So 10 minutes in lukewarm water for the feet, then put on that thick ointment, then socks, and keep that overnight.
28:48
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nice soft feet after that.
28:51
SPEAKER_01: Um I think a lot of issues that people get from brittle nails or flaky nails also can come from either inflammatory conditions of the skin, repeated trauma, things like that.
29:03
SPEAKER_01: Moisturizing that nail fold can do so much.
29:06
SPEAKER_01: It's a nail fold.
29:08
SPEAKER_01: Like the proximal nail folds.
29:10
SPEAKER_01: It's like where it's like your nail comes out of.
29:13
SPEAKER_00: You literally have nails on your hands, Angela.
29:18
SPEAKER_01: Here.
29:19
SPEAKER_00: Okay, thank you.
29:20
SPEAKER_00: This one.
29:21
SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
29:22
SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
29:23
SPEAKER_00: Show the show the camera.
29:26
SPEAKER_00: This is what I deal with.
29:30
SPEAKER_01: Um, oh, tanning.
29:33
SPEAKER_00: Tanning.
29:34
SPEAKER_00: Don't do it.
29:35
SPEAKER_01: The only safe tan is a sunless tan.
29:40
SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, DHA, that's the primary ingredient that most of these tanners are using.
29:46
SPEAKER_01: Some of them use erythrose, erythulose.
29:49
SPEAKER_01: Am I saying that correctly?
29:51
SPEAKER_01: Erythralose.
29:52
SPEAKER_01: Erythralose.
29:53
SPEAKER_01: Um, and these are basically molecules that attach to keratin protein and undergo a reaction that turns them.
30:03
SPEAKER_01: The myard reaction.
30:04
SPEAKER_00: They create something called melanoidins, which is not melanin.
30:09
SPEAKER_00: There is not an SPF protection factor associated with these melanoidins, so they are not considered a means of sun protection.
30:16
SPEAKER_00: So even a sunless tan is not something that's giving you any proper protection.
30:21
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
30:22
SPEAKER_01: So there's plenty of products out there right now with DHA, sunless tanners.
30:28
SPEAKER_01: You've heard of them.
30:29
SPEAKER_01: They don't necessarily need to be tinted.
30:32
SPEAKER_01: So, like a lot of products will add the tint to these uh formulas so that you know where you're putting it.
30:39
SPEAKER_00: And for some instant gratification.
30:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but some of my favorites are actually kind of the gradual tan products, so jergens.
30:47
SPEAKER_00: Jurgens.
30:48
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
30:48
SPEAKER_00: They have it here in the UK.
30:49
SPEAKER_00: They had a Dove had an amazing uh tanning lotion.
30:53
SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
30:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Isle of Paradise also had a good one.
30:56
SPEAKER_00: I think they discontinued it, which now I got beef.
30:59
SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I see people like Cycler just launched their tanning Milky Essence, and people are being like, oh my god, a clear, sunless tanner with skincare ingredients.
31:07
SPEAKER_00: Girl, that's half the stuff on the market.
31:08
SPEAKER_00: If you don't get out the house often enough, that's on you.
31:10
SPEAKER_00: But these you don't have to have that guide color.
31:13
SPEAKER_00: And personally, I don't like having it because I'm afraid about getting it on things.
31:17
SPEAKER_00: Like I literally will sunless tan and then just like walk around the house naked for like eight hours.
31:23
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
31:23
SPEAKER_01: Another thing that I like about the gradual versions is like it's less likely to become streaky because you're applying it every day.
31:32
SPEAKER_01: So any areas that you might miss or maybe get too much, it all kind of evens out after a while.
31:38
SPEAKER_00: Basically, there's like a single digit percentage of that DHA ingredient, so it's a lot less of a substantial and pronounced tan.
31:44
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
31:45
SPEAKER_01: Versus there are other products where it's like a one and done.
31:49
SPEAKER_00: Um three hours, bronzed.
31:52
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like um the Saint Trope products.
31:55
SPEAKER_00: They're cute.
31:55
SPEAKER_00: I'm like Isle of Paradise.
31:57
SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm uh IOP girly.
32:01
SPEAKER_01: I last summer uh decided to use Sunless Tanner to contour my body.
32:10
SPEAKER_00: I've done that.
32:12
SPEAKER_01: And it ate.
32:13
SPEAKER_00: That's the thing is like if you really finesse it, time it right, sometimes it takes some practice to get the timing down.
32:19
SPEAKER_00: Contouring your face, getting that like the abs etched and everything, like it can really do a lot for you.
32:26
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
32:27
SPEAKER_00: It's just a little bit of a science though.
32:30
SPEAKER_01: I think we should drop like a whole list of our recommendations from this episode in the description for y'all to shop.
32:39
SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you want it to be retail specific, but we'll put everything that we love.
32:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
32:42
SPEAKER_01: Any other like summer favorites for you or a summer fragrance?
32:47
SPEAKER_00: Oh, light and bright for summer.
32:51
SPEAKER_00: I can't think of one right now.
32:53
SPEAKER_01: For me, um, my go-to is uh Tom Ford Soleil Blanc.
32:59
SPEAKER_00: Oh, what's that smell like?
33:01
SPEAKER_01: It's got like a little bit of Neroli, coconut, very bright white floral, reminds you of the beach.
33:09
SPEAKER_00: See, I can't think of, I think of, I like to go more bright and more sweet.
33:12
SPEAKER_00: Loeve had this cosmic something that leans more sweet, that I really liked a lot.
33:17
SPEAKER_00: And like I was a really big bergamot girly.
33:20
SPEAKER_00: Ooh, okay.
33:22
SPEAKER_00: And I and I love that citrus quality to it, but if it's too bright, if that timbre is too much, I need something to ground it more and like a bass.
33:30
SPEAKER_00: I think of everything in terms of like sound and music.
33:32
SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, there's too much brassiness.
33:34
SPEAKER_00: I need like a very low bass to like secure that fragrance down.
33:38
unknown: Okay.
33:38
SPEAKER_00: And I can't think of like talking about that bass.
33:41
SPEAKER_00: I can't think of like a good fragrance.
33:44
SPEAKER_00: Because uh there was the Lalavo Bergamot that I liked for a long time in my early 20s.
33:49
SPEAKER_01: Oh, another one, replica beach walk.
33:51
SPEAKER_01: I like stuff that just reminds me of going to the beach.
33:54
SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
33:55
SPEAKER_00: Going back to products though, one one of my favorite staples is um, and we don't do this a lot, is I like to use an antioxidant-focused product on my body before sunscreen.
34:05
SPEAKER_00: And one of my favorites for that is the superoxide dismutase mist from NIOD.
34:09
SPEAKER_01: I like that.
34:10
SPEAKER_01: I love that product.
34:11
SPEAKER_00: Big ass bottle.
34:12
SPEAKER_00: Just douse yourself in it and then sunscreen on top, just because when it comes to protecting from photo aging, photo damage, yeah, there's the immediate, well, absorb the UV.
34:23
SPEAKER_00: But also there's uh free radicals are generated as a result of like UVA1 visible light as well.
34:29
SPEAKER_00: And mitigating some of that as well is a really big factor for me when it comes to like full body care.
34:35
SPEAKER_00: Plus, it's like a really lightweight, like watery mist.
34:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's easy to put on, easy to apply to large areas because you're spraying it.
34:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
34:44
SPEAKER_00: That's a stum, that's a summer staple.
34:46
SPEAKER_00: A lip SPF.
34:48
SPEAKER_01: Ooh, those are it's hard to make a good one.
34:51
SPEAKER_00: It is, and part of that is the tastes.
34:53
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
34:54
SPEAKER_00: Which is a result of Avobenzone, which is a very necessary UV filter.
34:59
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, one of my favorites that I've been using right now, it's like a super goop gloss.
35:04
SPEAKER_00: Oh, I like that one because it's not super glossy.
35:07
SPEAKER_01: But also the taste is not very strong.
35:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a good one.
35:12
SPEAKER_00: I'm playing with the prequel one.
35:14
SPEAKER_00: I like that one a lot.
35:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that one's not bad.
35:16
SPEAKER_00: I still love the applicator on that one.
35:18
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
35:19
SPEAKER_01: You know, the applicator could really like kill the whole vibe.
35:24
SPEAKER_00: A thousand percent.
35:25
SPEAKER_00: That's one thing I see, and granted, developing and launching a sunscreen product in general is a very time-consuming, expensive process.
35:31
SPEAKER_00: But I see all these brand brands, jot this down.
35:33
SPEAKER_00: I see all these brands keep launching these lip oils, these lip bombs, trying to dupe the road and summer Friday success.
35:39
SPEAKER_00: Launch a lip SPF version of those, please.
35:42
SPEAKER_00: Especially with like a really good scent to it.
35:44
SPEAKER_00: If I can get the Summer Fridays ice latte lip balm with some SPF up in there.
35:51
SPEAKER_00: Game changer.
35:53
SPEAKER_00: Why not?
35:53
SPEAKER_00: Why not take a crazy chance?
35:55
SPEAKER_00: Anything else for summer body summer prep?
35:58
SPEAKER_01: Wash your ass.
35:59
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, yeah.
36:00
SPEAKER_00: Again, I take three showers a day.
36:02
SPEAKER_01: If I get really sweaty, I'll take two, but some people overdo it.
36:07
SPEAKER_01: I've had some patients come to me and be like, I don't know why my skin is so dry.
36:12
SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, how often are you showering?
36:15
SPEAKER_01: And they're like, five times a day.
36:16
SPEAKER_00: Okay, but here's the deal.
36:17
SPEAKER_00: I'm not like doing like full, full, full, full cleanse head to toe every time I shower.
36:21
SPEAKER_00: Part of it's just like a quick rinse off to cool down.
36:24
SPEAKER_00: Targeted cleanse.
36:25
SPEAKER_00: I'm doing a full shower morning and night.
36:27
SPEAKER_00: But the in-betweens, hydrating cleanser where needed.
36:31
SPEAKER_00: But sweat is a water-soluble thing.
36:33
SPEAKER_00: Just I want that off my body.
36:35
SPEAKER_01: See, it is water soluble.
36:36
SPEAKER_00: And with that, hopefully your body's right and ready for the summer.
36:40
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
36:41
SPEAKER_01: If you have any summer body favorites or tips that we didn't talk about, let us know in the comments on YouTube.
36:48
SPEAKER_01: Give us a thumbs up, give us a five-star review, review us on Apple.
36:52
SPEAKER_01: I don't think you can review on Spotify, but give us the five stars, please.
36:57
SPEAKER_01: It really helps.
36:59
SPEAKER_01: Give us a review on Yel.
37:00
SPEAKER_00: And also remember, a lot of things we talked about in this episode are things that are very natural and do affect everyone.
37:06
SPEAKER_00: We just wanted to talk about potential solutions if it's something that you do want to remedy.
37:11
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
37:12
SPEAKER_01: You do you.
37:13
SPEAKER_00: Live your life, girl.
37:15
SPEAKER_00: Bye.
37:16
SPEAKER_00: Bye.
