- 0:00I was taking exception. I wouldn't say it made me angry.
- 0:03I don't say anything like that. But my identity, my value is on
- 0:10what the future of the company is.
- 0:12But it it it I didn't love the fact that my identity.
- 0:15People would think that I'm just here to be a Co host on the Dale
- 0:18Junior download. Like like I, I don't know what
- 0:21that was. That was something that that I
- 0:22was having to really kind of wrestle with.
- 0:24It's the Kenny Wallace conversation brought to you by
- 0:27Jags. Hello everyone, and welcome back
- 0:31to Kenny Conversation brought to you by Jags, the leader in high
- 0:36performance aftermarket car parts.
- 0:38Remember to go to jags.com for everything you need to fix your
- 0:43vehicle. And they are telling me that
- 0:45they have Jeep parts and truck parts in stock right now.
- 0:51As I always say, deep breath. We have one of the biggest
- 0:54players in the NASCAR industry and my my newest dearest friend
- 1:01there is Mike Davis. Mike, how are you doing?
- 1:04I'm doing good. That's not true.
- 1:06You're already getting us started off with a lie, Kenny.
- 1:08This is not how it's it's not true.
- 1:11But the the true part is we are dear friends.
- 1:14That's a true part. Yes.
- 1:16Well, I say it on every Kenny conversation, Mike.
- 1:21It is just that it's a conversation.
- 1:23We're, we're not going to go in exact order, but we're just
- 1:26going to celebrate your career. You have done a lot in a short
- 1:31period of time. So let, let's start like this.
- 1:35We're we're going to start with the good stuff and then we'll
- 1:37kind of go back and see where you came from.
- 1:40But kind of in between right now you are a Georgia Southern
- 1:45University graduate. So the question is this, are you
- 1:50a Georgia man at heart right now?
- 1:54I'm an Alabama guy. I'm an Alabama guy.
- 1:56I'm from Birmingham, AL, So how I got to Georgia Southern is
- 2:01interesting because we moved to Tennessee when I was really
- 2:04young and then we moved to North Georgia when I was going into
- 2:10middle school. And then I was always planning
- 2:14to go back to Alabama. But there was a, a new
- 2:19scholarship that if you stayed in the state of Georgia, I think
- 2:23they still do it because they implemented the lottery in
- 2:27Georgia and the lottery was paying for these scholarships
- 2:30where if you graduated school with AB average or high school
- 2:33with AB average, your, your tuition was paid for if you
- 2:35stayed in state. And since I was graduating in
- 2:39Georgia, let's see here, get your tuition paid for in state
- 2:43or pay out of state to go anywhere else.
- 2:46It that was an easy one, right for me because I was putting
- 2:49myself through school. And so, so yeah, I went to, I
- 2:54went to an in state Georgia school and Georgia Southern is
- 2:57where I went and I loved it. I loved it a little too much.
- 3:01Well, you answered my next question and I like it when we
- 3:04can do that because I'm a big fan of Instagram and I see you
- 3:08there with your beautiful family.
- 3:09I see you're a girl, dad, 2 girls, but I believe what you
- 3:13were on one of the cruise ships and you're sitting with an
- 3:15Alabama hat on. I'm like what?
- 3:18So that's an interesting story. And yeah, those state lines get
- 3:23close, don't they? Down there.
- 3:24Talladega, AL, Atlanta, GA. It's just like you could go here
- 3:28or there or 15 minutes and you're in another state.
- 3:32That's right. That's right.
- 3:33And you can go north and you'll be in Tennessee.
- 3:35I mean, like you got to get, listen, I, I spent most of my
- 3:40life, well, now I've spent most of my life in North Carolina,
- 3:42but most of my life was in Georgia.
- 3:45But all my family's back in Alabama and yeah, I've always
- 3:49got a strong roots to where I was born and where we lived when
- 3:53I was early And then and, and also I do have some connections
- 3:58with the University of Alabama to where I mentor their
- 4:00students. In fact, I got one an e-mail
- 4:02today from a student that was just wanting to connect with me
- 4:06and and talk about a couple job opportunities they have.
- 4:09That's something that I've been involved with with for about
- 4:11four or five years. It just kind of in a mentorship
- 4:14program to some of the sports communications and sports
- 4:17marketing students. That's been a lot of fun.
- 4:20I've gone to visit them. That's that's that's a thing
- 4:23that we've done. And so, yeah, I mean, like I've
- 4:26always, I'm out now Georgia Southern now listen, always very
- 4:31dear to me because of, I mean, that's where I that's where I
- 4:34springboarded into where I'm at right now.
- 4:37Alabama contributed nothing to me on where I'm at today.
- 4:41Georgia Southern a good bet. So that's that's always going to
- 4:45be something special to me. OK, let's go right now.
- 4:49And then later on we'll go back. I think it's important, you
- 4:55know, because everybody knows Mike Davis.
- 4:58You have two titles. One of them is funny and the
- 5:03other one's dead serious. The first one that I like is one
- 5:09of your titles is you are Dale Earnhardt Junior's right hand
- 5:12man. And I and I believe that that is
- 5:16that is my opinion. And then when I study up on you
- 5:20in the industry, the NASCAR industry, you know, since 2004,
- 5:24it's been all that's Dale Junior's right hand man.
- 5:29You were his PR man. But we're going to get there
- 5:31like, but your real 1 and, and feel free to correct me, your
- 5:36real 1 is you are the president and executive producer of Dirty
- 5:41MO Media. And I'm am I missing anything
- 5:44there? No, that's it.
- 5:46That's it. Well, I've had a bunch of
- 5:47different job titles and frankly, but I've been with Dell
- 5:51since 2004. So yeah, between that's 20
- 5:55years. So like, yeah, I've had several
- 5:57roles through that, but I don't know, listen, Dale has one right
- 6:03hand, left hand and every hand, and that is Kelly Earnhardt
- 6:06Miller. I mean, there is nobody else
- 6:08that even comes close to the importance of what Kelly is to
- 6:12Dale. Now, Kelly also relies on a lot
- 6:15of or, or or few of us that I I'd like to think that we're
- 6:20pretty close and that we, you know, have some influence and
- 6:23and she seeks our opinions out on stuff.
- 6:25But for let's be clear, I mean to say I'm his right hand man
- 6:29with somehow seems to undermine what Kelly is, and you know all
- 6:33too well how important she is. Yeah, so I'm kind of debating
- 6:39with myself right now. Do we stay right there at Junior
- 6:43Motorsports? I don't think so.
- 6:45I want to go right into dirty MO Media because you, you've done a
- 6:49lot and, and you know, I've done a lot, but but what are we known
- 6:53for? And, and sometimes we're known
- 6:55for what we don't want to be known for, but I think you would
- 6:58be proud of this. So we're going to go right in.
- 7:00We're going to go right into dirty MO media.
- 7:02Then we'll go back to Junior Motorsports.
- 7:04OK, OK. And I, I'm going, I'm along for
- 7:06the ride, man, You're driving. I'm.
- 7:09Just you've done you've done so much.
- 7:11All right. The number one question that
- 7:14that I've always wanted to know. Take me to that exact moment
- 7:19when you approached Dale Junior or you thought about it yourself
- 7:24or you were doing something that you said.
- 7:27I want to start a podcast. Tell me that moment and what was
- 7:31going on in your head and where were you and everything?
- 7:36I remember the exact spot where I came up with the name or when
- 7:42I came up with the concept of dirty mode.
- 7:43Now it was crossing a railroad track in old Mooresville.
- 7:47Why I remember that Kenny, I do not know.
- 7:51But let's back up just a second here.
- 7:54I work for Jade Gersh, who was Dale Junior's publicist at but
- 7:59for Budweiser Racing. He was the company was called
- 8:02Fingerprint Inc, and a lot of Dale Junior fans know the name
- 8:05Jade Gersh. And Jade was deeply influential
- 8:11in my everything I know about PR and publicity, right?
- 8:15He was really a publicist by definition, truest thing.
- 8:20I don't think they have good or or true publicist in the sport
- 8:23right now. I think that social media is
- 8:25gone and kind of redefined things.
- 8:27Anyways, Jade was the first one that I knew that did a podcast.
- 8:33Oh, OK, Now we're talking because I we all, I was, I was
- 8:36going to leave him out of it, but it's very important now that
- 8:39you'll say that. Well, look, you know, he was
- 8:42also the first one to do a blog that I, I'd never heard of the
- 8:44term blog until Jade did a blog. Jade was doing a blog as part of
- 8:49his just, you know, his part of his duties as a, as Dale
- 8:56Junior's and Budweiser Racing's publicist.
- 8:59And that was his, that was something he had done.
- 9:01He was always the first one to to anything technical, right and
- 9:05anything Internet, he was always that guy.
- 9:07For me at least, and so was. He was he ahead of his time.
- 9:11I I think so. I think so.
- 9:14I mean, again, I remember when he was doing his blog, a lot of
- 9:18the NASCAR media and this is back when the NASCAR, this was
- 9:20in 2004. So like, you know, you had your
- 9:23David Poole's, you know, you had, you had your Ed Hinton's,
- 9:29you had Mulhern, you know, you remember the old guard of
- 9:32NASCAR? Oh, yeah.
- 9:34A lot of people don't know about how the NASCAR old guard boy
- 9:36that was that was a stout lineup of media people covering the
- 9:39sport, travelling every every newspaper, every media outlet
- 9:43that was travelling people. Gangsters, man, gangsters.
- 9:46So, so the blog, nobody knew what to do with that like they
- 9:51they did. Jake caught a lot of grief for
- 9:53it, I remember because it was kind of an opinion editorial
- 9:57piece and he would write it. Jade writer.
- 9:59He wrote two books, wrote more than two books, wrote 2 on Dell.
- 10:03So anyways, it was on this blog that nobody knew what to do with
- 10:08where he also started doing a podcast.
- 10:10And the podcast was about one to two minutes long.
- 10:14It was just AI think a recap of how Dale Junior finished in the
- 10:17previous race. And I don't know who would have
- 10:21listened to it. I don't know, maybe a few
- 10:23people. I I have no idea.
- 10:24But that's where I first heard the Dame podcast.
- 10:26Now Fast forward, I come to work at Junior Motorsports in O 7.
- 10:31Is that right? O seven.
- 10:32Yeah, I worked for Jade three years and we can get into why I
- 10:37came over to Junior Motorsports. So whenever you want to.
- 10:39But and then and then I had different roles from 2007 to
- 10:452010, 1213, all that stuff. And then it was in it it, it was
- 10:49when I had my first daughter where my priorities change.
- 10:53And you know how this is, you know, you have kids now all of a
- 10:56sudden the traveling just feels different, doesn't it?
- 11:02It's like. It's not, it's not as fun.
- 11:03You're in those hotel rooms all by yourself, you know if you
- 11:06drink and you feel like crap the next day.
- 11:09It's just, you know, like I changed, you know, having kids
- 11:13will change it. So so I ended up Dale Junior and
- 11:17Kelly were amazing because I finally had reached a point
- 11:21where I was like, yeah, I'm not going to be able to do this
- 11:23anymore. And I think, Kenny, I don't
- 11:25think I know I was willing to leave.
- 11:27I was willing to leave the sport and leave this profession to be
- 11:32there for my family because as you know, you know, our garage,
- 11:35God bless it, is full of broken homes and, and a lot of a lot of
- 11:38parents that missed a lot of childhoods, right?
- 11:40Like there's a lot of people that just never got to really go
- 11:44to those ball games or no, never got to go to that piano recital.
- 11:48And so I just knew that that wasn't going to be good for me.
- 11:51That wasn't going to be me. And so fortunately, Dale and
- 11:55Kelly gave me the most amazing gesture ever.
- 11:59And that was they said don't leave, you can hire somebody,
- 12:01but that you know, you're only as good.
- 12:06Your value in the sport if it's a travelling circus.
- 12:09So that we are your value is pretty much on your ability to
- 12:13travel or your willingness to travel.
- 12:15There's some jobs that don't travel for sure.
- 12:17But I'm telling you the the ones that are making money or the
- 12:20ones that are being, you know, really valuable to an
- 12:23organization, they're at the track.
- 12:25They are at the track or they're sending people to the track,
- 12:29right? You know, they get to pick their
- 12:31schedule. I knew that I was not going to
- 12:34be valuable that way, but that's why I was also willing to leave.
- 12:36But, and it wasn't like I was threatening to leave.
- 12:39I just, they knew where I was in life.
- 12:42And then I had my daughter and, and the and by the way, with
- 12:45Dale Junior, it's never just the weekend travel like Dale Junior.
- 12:50There's midweek travel like, you know, like.
- 12:52It never ends. You would you would have to go
- 12:55make an appearance on a Wednesday or, you know, you
- 12:57might have to go out to LA and shoot a commercial for the Super
- 13:00Bowl, you know, whatever it is, right?
- 13:01So it's like it, it was a it was a a grind and everybody kind of
- 13:04reaches that point anyways. They said, don't leave.
- 13:07You can hire somebody. So we started hiring people to
- 13:09do that road managerial type thing that I had been doing at
- 13:13that point. And I say all that to say this.
- 13:18Yeah, it's. OK, I got to find something to
- 13:20do now, right? Like I mean, again, I'm now I
- 13:24got what I wanted. I I'm not traveling, but it's
- 13:28also boring. It's an office job now.
- 13:31So let me stop you right there. Hold on.
- 13:33OK. You know I don't interrupt
- 13:35people unless it's necessary. Go ahead.
- 13:38Dale Junior and Kelly must have really thought you were valuable
- 13:42to say don't leave because they must have really believed in
- 13:47your talent because nobody keeps somebody if they don't have
- 13:51something for them to do. I just want to brag on you a
- 13:54little bit. We're celebrating.
- 13:56That's what Kenny conversations all about.
- 13:59They kept you and you could and you basically said, I don't want
- 14:02to go on the road anymore. That's it.
- 14:04That, that's a really big compliment.
- 14:07Yeah, like I said, I took it as a compliment.
- 14:09It was the, it's the kindest thing anybody's ever done for me
- 14:14in this profession, in the work life, OK.
- 14:17And that was that gesture of don't leave.
- 14:20Because again, I know reality, I know that that now they have to
- 14:25go hire somebody. Now we have to go pay twice as
- 14:28much as we were spending now. I mean, like that's a that's an
- 14:30enormous gesture. Why they did it.
- 14:34I mean, I'd like to think that the, we developed enough of a
- 14:37rapport and I had a, you know, some influence that they they
- 14:39valued my opinion on things. At that time, I was running
- 14:43communications for Junior Motorsports and, and also the
- 14:47road managerial thing. And so, and also Dale was in
- 14:50this point, you'll remember, I mean, he wasn't running that
- 14:56good at Hendrick Motorsports, right?
- 14:57Like we went through a pretty funky dry spell, right?
- 15:02And and it was and so yeah, it just, there were things that
- 15:06were just kind of like trying to keep it on its axis might have
- 15:09had a little bit to do with it. But but then when Letarte came
- 15:14in, this all sort of happening at the same time because
- 15:16Letarte, I believe his first year was, was it 12 or 13?
- 15:22Anyway, I'm I'm drawing a blank on that but.
- 15:24It's OK, the years are not important, but it happened.
- 15:28But but they kept me and I then started doing media stuff here.
- 15:32I mean, again, I'm a I'm a journalism major.
- 15:35I came from newspapers. I, I claim to be a writer,
- 15:40although there's many that are way better than at writing than
- 15:43I am. But but I've always been
- 15:47fascinated with the media and the publicity and also now the
- 15:50brand. How do you market your brand?
- 15:52And Dale Junior has an enormous brand, but it also can be
- 15:56misused. And so I was fascinated by all
- 16:00of this stuff. And so it was those things that
- 16:02sort of sowed the seeds of dirty MO media, right?
- 16:05Because it was like, you know, brand marketing, you know,
- 16:10fascination of just media, the spoken word communication, which
- 16:16again, communications guy here. And then also boredom.
- 16:20You know, I got, I got to find something to do.
- 16:21If I, I mean, I, you know, I'm not really a sit down and, and
- 16:25just be an office guy. So we started doing videos and
- 16:30you can relate to this. It's like you start doing videos
- 16:33not knowing a Dang thing of what you're doing, right?
- 16:36Like you don't even know. It's funny.
- 16:38You go back and look at some of our first videos.
- 16:40This is pre Dirty MO Media. We were doing a video series
- 16:44called JRM 360 and I just, we just started doing it kind of
- 16:48showing some, some personality and transparency inside our race
- 16:51shop. Man, we didn't even know how to
- 16:54white balance a camera. It looks like it's snowing
- 16:56because it's July. It's like everything's like just
- 16:59just blown out. And, and so now we look back and
- 17:03we were like, Oh, I can't watch this.
- 17:05This is painful. But you know what we were doing?
- 17:08We were, we were learning and we were just realized like, you
- 17:11know, how do you, how do you connect with fans?
- 17:14How do you connect with an audience?
- 17:15How do you grow an audience and, and you got to mess up a lot of
- 17:18things to, to, to and, and we still mess up, right?
- 17:22Like, and I'm not afraid of messing up.
- 17:23I mean, like we like to think we take swings and stuff and, and
- 17:28not afraid to miss occasionally. We like to think we can make
- 17:31some contact here and there. But like, the fact of the matter
- 17:34is, is that that's how it started.
- 17:35And then we started and then that go back to that day.
- 17:38I'm crossing those railroad tracks and Mooresville driving
- 17:41to work one morning and I'm like, we need to have a podcast
- 17:44network and I'm going to start the Dale Junior day.
- 17:46Like I, I, I thought about a, a name for a show and Dale Junior
- 17:52was not going to be participating.
- 17:53I knew that because he was busy racing and we just wanted to
- 17:58start creating a show that recapped and gave a a look into
- 18:05Dale Junior's right, Like really kind of unpacked a race better
- 18:08than the TV network was doing for Dale Junior.
- 18:12Like, I don't care about anybody else.
- 18:13It's about. Dale, and at this time, nobody
- 18:17could get enough of Dale Junior because he was shy, in my
- 18:20opinion. He was kind of quiet in my
- 18:23opinion. And so you could never get
- 18:26enough of Dale Junior. So I'm with you.
- 18:28I'm with you. Well, we also hit a wave because
- 18:32we started the Dale Junior download in 2013.
- 18:34Well, 2014 is when he won the Daytona 500 and he won three
- 18:38other races. I mean, he won the Martinsville
- 18:41race in the fall when the two Poconos, so that helps, you
- 18:47know, when did they turn a 500? Hopefully your business benefits
- 18:50from it. It's everything.
- 18:51It's everything. And so we were still very early.
- 18:54Again, Dale Junior wasn't really active on the platform.
- 18:58He knew about it and he knew that I was doing it.
- 19:01We we were, but, but that was a thing that really kind of helped
- 19:04us get it off the ground. And then we started kind of
- 19:06building some other shows and creating them and getting them
- 19:09launched. So what at at what point did you
- 19:15convince Dale Junior that, hey, this is this is big, this this
- 19:21is going to be big for you, it's going to be good for you?
- 19:25When did that moment come? Would you remember that
- 19:28conversation with him? Yes, I do.
- 19:30But first of all, I'll say I'm I'm still, I'm still not sure
- 19:33we've convinced him of that. But the the, the fact is, is
- 19:36that I remember when Dale Junior was concussed.
- 19:39Oh yeah, the concussion. Right.
- 19:42And he missed a few weeks again, the year I'm, I'm drawing a
- 19:46blank on which year it was, but it was the one we were in the
- 19:48playoffs at the time, called the Chase and then he had to miss a
- 19:52couple weeks. Now we weren't really
- 19:54threatening to win a championship.
- 19:56I don't remember that. But like we were in the playoffs
- 19:59and and he had to, he got he got concussed at Talladega and
- 20:03that's the one you'll remember. He said he called the sport
- 20:06bloodthirsty. And he was outside of his mind
- 20:10because he was, you know, suffered a concussion.
- 20:12We didn't know. And he was missing some races
- 20:16now. And nobody knew, including us,
- 20:19nobody really knew what to do with that.
- 20:22And so eventually, and I, again, I don't remember exact the
- 20:26specific timing, but eventually there was this need and we could
- 20:30feel it. There was a need of people
- 20:32needing to hear from Dale on what the heck is going on?
- 20:36Media needed to hear it. Fans needed to hear it.
- 20:38And I'm just like, oh, we've got this vehicle, we got this
- 20:41podcast. It's the Dale junior download.
- 20:43And again, you know about it. But it's like up until then he
- 20:47would just in year 1, he never was on it in year 2 and three he
- 20:51would, he would just lay lay his thoughts after race into his
- 20:55phone and just send me the audio file like in the voice memos,
- 20:59right. And I, we thought that was
- 21:01amazing, Like his, that that was Dale.
- 21:04That was a glimpse into kind of what his mind is going through
- 21:07right after a race. He's back.
- 21:09He's not, he's not at the track. He's now back home.
- 21:11He's cracked a beer. And now he's sometimes by
- 21:14himself, sometimes I'm there. And now he's just kind of like
- 21:17rewinding kind of what the day went right with, like how things
- 21:20unfolded. And so we thought that was an
- 21:23extraordinary value. And then, but eventually when he
- 21:27was concussed, he was missing a few races, he and I would talk
- 21:30and it's like, Hey, why don't we go on the podcast and really
- 21:33kind of like you talk directly to the fans.
- 21:36Don't let them have to read it. Don't don't let them have to
- 21:38hear it through Claire B Lang or whatever, just and she would
- 21:42have done a fine job. I'm just saying is that let, let
- 21:44let them hear from you. And that was the first one.
- 21:48That's when we knew not only that we had something that
- 21:52could. Again, you're looking at ways to
- 21:54connect to your fan base, but that also was one where I
- 21:59remember thinking, well, Dale Junior's pretty good with a
- 22:02microphone too, right? When he's really just kind of
- 22:05coming from the heart. And that was a good, that was a
- 22:10big episode. So then eventually we we
- 22:12realized, or he realized that he might want to do this a lot
- 22:16more. He would come on the download
- 22:18here and there and but me and another guy were hosting it and
- 22:23eventually we decided that he could take that over.
- 22:26And he said he wanted to do a podcast.
- 22:27We, we, we thought about whether we should start a brand new one
- 22:30or if we just let him take the keys to the download.
- 22:32And that's obviously what we did.
- 22:35And and then we were off and running, you know?
- 22:39As I listen intently it it sounds to me like Junior had
- 22:45some concussions. I I remember the one coming off
- 22:48the turn 4 California Speedway and he came out with another
- 22:53controversial statement where he said I was, you know, messed up
- 22:58running some races. And everybody was aghast.
- 23:01Like, so this is amazing. So in, in now we're going to
- 23:07download everything. You said it in like a sentence.
- 23:11Am I hearing you right? Because of Dale Earnhardt
- 23:13Junior's concussions, you say, hey, come on, tell everybody
- 23:19what's up. Although you already had started
- 23:22it, but this was the vehicle to starting the Dale Junior
- 23:25download. Is that right?
- 23:27We had, we had been doing it for two or three years.
- 23:29I don't remember how many. I mean, it might have actually
- 23:31been a few more, but it wasn't with Dale coming into a studio
- 23:35like people as they know the download today, there was
- 23:38nothing like that. Like I said, it was a it was a
- 23:41process. It was a gradual escalation of,
- 23:45of direct involvement. It, it went from nothing and it
- 23:47went to, you know, him laying his thoughts into the phone one
- 23:51year or you know, we did that for a year or two.
- 23:54Eventually though, I remember the the where Dale wanted to be
- 23:59involved with with the with the platform was after the
- 24:02concussion situation. I find it amazing that you
- 24:06recognized now this is about you still.
- 24:09We're just talking about how you got there.
- 24:12Listen, it's like you got to talk about Rusty, you know, to
- 24:15get to Kenny a little bit because my whole life was my
- 24:19brother Rusty, But you recognized that he was in this.
- 24:24He was young and he would take his his phone and you're like,
- 24:28oh, he's giving me his thoughts digitally.
- 24:30You know, usually people would have to write this or you call
- 24:32on the phone, they're taking notes.
- 24:34He's so he's So what you're saying he was so far advanced
- 24:38that he was, he'd just talk into it and send it to you?
- 24:42Oh, yeah. Oh, I used to laugh.
- 24:44Like you'd hear, you'd hear, you'd hear a dog barking in the
- 24:50background or you'd hear him kind of clanging around as he's
- 24:53fumbling for a beer or whatever. And I'm like, I love that.
- 24:56I love that noise. Like at one point, what exotic
- 25:00animal did he have Outback? I I don't think it was the
- 25:03buffing. It was the but it was something
- 25:05and you could hear it in the background and I'm like, that's
- 25:08the good stuff. That's the good stuff.
- 25:10I don't like, I don't I I want more of that.
- 25:14Like I with there's farm animals or whether it's dogs or whether
- 25:18or whether Amy comes down and and says, you know.
- 25:21Get your ass up. Here, get up here.
- 25:23You know, I'm like, that's the kind of stuff that's the
- 25:27transparency that nobody has. And so I love that, by the way.
- 25:32I miss that to be honest with. You so so Charlie is listening
- 25:37right now and this is this is when when the Dale junior
- 25:40download and everybody at dirty MO media.
- 25:42I just absolutely love it when you put those shorts out all
- 25:46week long. This is the part that I want
- 25:50Charlie to edit that you know, you you had it going, but you
- 25:55recognizing Dale Junior giving you, you know, a download of how
- 26:00his race went so you could write a press release.
- 26:03And at that moment you really liked all that stuff going on
- 26:06his real life. And and that is that is that
- 26:11where it started becoming reality in your brain.
- 26:14It it is. And then also we started looking
- 26:19at not just exposing Dale's fans directly to Dale himself in the
- 26:24most authentic, transparent way possible, but now the world
- 26:28around him. So we started other podcasts.
- 26:30That's where Door Bumper Clear came in.
- 26:32Well, that that was a TJ podcast.
- 26:33TJ was a spotter again, so and we've been using TJTJ was more
- 26:38or less a Co host on the Dale junior download for years and
- 26:41now we're going to go branch out and do a a new podcast with TJ.
- 26:46That's just spotters. And by the way, at the time, who
- 26:49cares what spotters got to say? Nobody like just the spotters
- 26:53themselves. But yet TJ and Brett Griffin, we
- 26:56could start doing a podcast there.
- 26:57We started an outdoors podcast called Earnhardt outdoors.
- 27:01We started, we had a couple other little podcast back in the
- 27:04day was a fun podcast that we used to do.
- 27:07And so it was exposing the world to the Dale junior ecosystem as
- 27:11well. We I think you might have been,
- 27:15I believe you were a guest on one of my favorite podcast that
- 27:18we've ever done, and that was fast Lane family with Kelly
- 27:21Earnhardt Miller. We did a fast it was called fast
- 27:23Lane family. I did it and we did that for
- 27:26three years, I think, and and I love that show and Kelly did a
- 27:30fantastic job, but she that those were just different
- 27:33conversations than we were having anywhere else.
- 27:35So again, it, it exposed the world to the insides of Kelly
- 27:40Earnhardt's way. She thinks, and I promise you,
- 27:42she doesn't think like everybody else thinks.
- 27:44So now you're hearing, you know, what it's like to have to, to as
- 27:48a, as a very influential, prominent business leader in the
- 27:52sport, who also is Dale's sister, who also was Dale
- 27:57Senior's daughter, who was coming up through the business
- 28:00and being impactful in the ways that she was growing and
- 28:03escalating. Let's turn it into a podcast.
- 28:05Yes, let's do it. So that's what that's what we
- 28:07do. OK, so we've established how it
- 28:12happened. It it it, you know, took a
- 28:14little therapy session to get there, but it was very
- 28:18interesting. And now here we are dirty MO
- 28:22media has the Dale Junior download actions detrimental and
- 28:28that's another subject here in a minute actions detrimental with
- 28:32Denny Hamlin door bumper clear the tear down and more to come.
- 28:38You now you've created this I call a fortress a fortress is
- 28:43this big old, you know, building and now now you're you're
- 28:47putting all this stuff in it. I want to congratulate you on
- 28:51something that just came out now OK, now we're now we're now
- 28:55we're moving forward. We've established where you
- 28:59know, dirty MO media started and then under dirty MO media, we
- 29:03got Dale junior downloading all the new shows.
- 29:06But you just received an incredible honor.
- 29:10I want to congratulate you on being announced as the podcast
- 29:16power list for NASCAR racing by awful announcing.
- 29:20That is another company and and it's funny because we call it it
- 29:26it's got like a a name. It's called podcasting.
- 29:29It's like surfing, you know, it's like football podcasting.
- 29:35It's almost like a damn sport. But but my congratulations
- 29:40because your company, Dirty MO Media is listed now you've been
- 29:46awarded the podcast Powerless for NASCAR racing.
- 29:50What's that feel like? Hey, do you think it's a
- 29:54coincidence that we that that list came out the day you
- 29:57announced that you and greater were coming?
- 30:00I don't think that's a coincidence.
- 30:01It was the same day. That's a big.
- 30:05That's a big. Deal all I needed was Wallace
- 30:09and Schrader to show up and then all of a sudden people like oh,
- 30:12they're pretty good over there It's it's nice Kenny.
- 30:17I mean, I, I don't, I'm, I'm uncomfortable with, I'm
- 30:25uncomfortable with accolades or I'm uncomfortable with talking
- 30:30about them, frankly, but but it's nice.
- 30:35I mean, it's nice for the team. I mean, I love my team here,
- 30:37right? Like I love the and, and I'm not
- 30:40even talking about just the host.
- 30:41I love them too, but I'm talking about my employees at dirty MO
- 30:44media, man. I mean, I, I think that we got
- 30:47some outstanding content creators and so.
- 30:50And I counted about 10 I took. A picture 15 now.
- 30:55Wow. That's listen up everybody.
- 30:58Dirty MO Media 15 yeah, I took a picture and I said, well there's
- 31:039 Dale Junior's missing, so that's pretty incredible 15.
- 31:10I don't compare. I have no idea if that's
- 31:12incredible. I have no idea if that's
- 31:14pathetic. I have no idea what that is.
- 31:16All I know is is it's us. It's who we are, and that's all
- 31:19I care about. And you know what?
- 31:21We, we, we don't just, I'd like to think the content that we
- 31:25come out with, we know who we are.
- 31:28We know our lane, right? And we surround ourselves with,
- 31:33with the people and with shows and with hosts that we think are
- 31:37like us. We're not for everybody, of
- 31:41course. And that's, that's, that's OK,
- 31:44right? That's OK.
- 31:45But I do think that our team is pretty outstanding.
- 31:48And I and I love the fact that when we do get those types of
- 31:51recognitions, I like it for them.
- 31:55OK, I want to go somewhere. It's not deep, but in my
- 32:02opinion, this is me and I want you to comment on it.
- 32:07Dirt Dirty MO Media has changed NASCAR forever, and here's why.
- 32:15Because it's the only way I know how to explain it.
- 32:20So, you know, you got that song as a child that goes Dun, Dun,
- 32:23Dun, Dun and it stops there and it drives you nuts.
- 32:27It's like, give me the dunk, dunk, which is the ending.
- 32:31So as I've watched the Dale Junior download over the years,
- 32:37unbelievable endings with like, Ty Norris, Ty Norris's, you
- 32:43know, telling the real story, some of the inside reasons why
- 32:48decisions were made. The most fascinating 1 I think
- 32:53I'll ever I almost wanted to jump in the screen and hug Dale
- 32:55Junior, which was Tony Uri Junior, where he's literally
- 33:00addressing his cousin, his relative about their fallout.
- 33:06And you know that NASCAR, you know, all the executives are
- 33:10watching this. My point is this 15 years ago
- 33:14there was things that went down in NASCAR and it was just like a
- 33:17tragedy. And these these players, like a
- 33:21Ty Norris or Tony you junior kept their mouth shut all these
- 33:25years, but they they chose dirty MO Media the Dale Junior
- 33:30download. They chose Dale.
- 33:31Dale Junior. Thank you.
- 33:34They chose Dale. OK, let's go right there.
- 33:39So you, you've, you've changed the sport forever because you
- 33:42gave everybody closure. And so you're saying it was
- 33:45because they wanted to talk to to Junior?
- 33:48Yeah, OK. A lot to a lot to respond to
- 33:52there. First of all, I don't subscribe
- 33:56to the to the notion that Dirty MO media is changing NASCAR
- 34:01forever. I.
- 34:02In a good way. If it if the I, I don't, I don't
- 34:06see it. I just know because I, I just
- 34:08focus on us, right? I don't know what it does.
- 34:10I don't know what the impact, but I will say this, I will give
- 34:13you this. Forget why we started the Dale
- 34:18Junior download, because that was to recap Dale Junior's
- 34:21races. But when Dale Junior became the
- 34:23host of it, OK, the, the identity and the mission changed
- 34:30on the download. What it what is the podcast
- 34:32going to do? And you and I had this
- 34:33conversation too. Remember when you, me and
- 34:35Charlie and Schrader were talking about our new podcast
- 34:38were like, OK, why will people listen to it?
- 34:41What will make it unique? What will make it different?
- 34:44It became very clear to me early on when Dale started taking over
- 34:47as the host and we started actually when he took over as
- 34:50host. We weren't even doing long form
- 34:52interviews. That really kind of started
- 34:55after our deal with NBC. Dale Junior was becoming a
- 34:59broadcaster now. We were getting people in the
- 35:01studio and and and it became clear to me that the purpose of
- 35:05the Dale Junior download was to heal.
- 35:10You're heavy. That's heavy in a good way.
- 35:12Trust me, it was healing. I saw it.
- 35:15I saw it right there. Not just for the guests, for
- 35:18Dale. It became clear to me that there
- 35:21were conversations that I would have thought had been had a long
- 35:24time ago that never were had. I could think there's some early
- 35:281 Steve Park, Michael Waltrip. Let me tell you, I was in
- 35:31College in 2001. I was finishing up college, but
- 35:35I still had a few months left. And when that tragic day
- 35:38happened in 2001, I, I, I remember, you know, seeing that
- 35:45I'm again, I'm a fan. I'm just a race fan, right?
- 35:48And I was there and, and I was watching and I would have just
- 35:52assumed, especially the next week when, you know, Steve Park
- 35:57won at Rockingham the next week. And I, I would see what, what's
- 36:03on the magazines and on the TV. And I just thought, well, this
- 36:07group at DEI, they're just to get, they're going to, this is
- 36:09going to just really kind of they're going to just, they're
- 36:12going to be there for each other.
- 36:13You know, when Dale Junior won in 2001, I just graduated
- 36:17college, but I'd still not even taking a job yet.
- 36:20And I was in Texas visiting a friend when that 01 July Daytona
- 36:26redemption race happened. And, you know, you see Dale
- 36:29Junior and Michael Waltrip hugging and, and they're
- 36:31embracing and stuff. I just assume like anybody else
- 36:34would, that Dale and Mikey been talking.
- 36:37They're probably best friends, if they weren't already.
- 36:40None of that was happening. And I didn't know it until we
- 36:42did the download and that they weren't talking at all to each
- 36:45other. And it doesn't really surprise
- 36:46me because Dale Junior is not much of an extrovert, right?
- 36:50He's very much opposite of that. And so I, I just, I, I see that
- 36:55conversations that I assumed would have been had or never
- 36:59had. OK, so we got Michael and Steve
- 37:01Park. Well, they needed healing too.
- 37:04It wasn't that just Dale. Michael Waltrip was a troubled
- 37:09individual. Still trying.
- 37:11I mean, he's come out with the book and he's come out with the
- 37:13documentary. But I'm telling you, I feel like
- 37:16everyday Michael Walter wakes up and probably thinks about all
- 37:18this. Right?
- 37:19Yeah. And so then he got Mike Hilton
- 37:22come in. One of my favorite episodes was
- 37:24Richard Childress. Brian France.
- 37:27I couldn't. Brian France blew me away.
- 37:29Now we're getting to what my original question was.
- 37:32These people, I mean, how the hell did you get Brian France to
- 37:35admit that he was pissed off that nobody liked his new car?
- 37:39Again, I think it was Dale, Dale Junior, man.
- 37:44I guess the point on this that I'm trying to make is that
- 37:47there's conversations that needed to be had and people were
- 37:50wanting to have them and they want to have them with Dale
- 37:53Junior. They could have them with a lot
- 37:55of other people. Well, and you could say better
- 37:59than I would, but like, you've sat at that table and said as a
- 38:03guest and and and I, I've heard other people say you kind of
- 38:07forget that you're being that you're, you're taping.
- 38:11Yeah. And so I just know, like you
- 38:13said, you brought up Ty Norris. Ty Norris was a a huge moment
- 38:17because Ty Norris called me after that show and he goes, you
- 38:23know, I went years after DEI because, you know, he had a
- 38:28very, very ugly exit from DEI, right?
- 38:31I can, you know, he and and he, his exit had to do with Dale
- 38:36Junior. And Dale Junior had nothing.
- 38:38He never knew it. And that was all to do with
- 38:41Teresa and everything else. And he's telling us his story.
- 38:43And then afterwards he calls when he says, hey, I thought for
- 38:47years Dale Junior was angry at me.
- 38:49And I'm like, why did you think that?
- 38:51And he goes, because he wouldn't ever talk to me.
- 38:52And I'm like, but Dale Junior doesn't really talk to like you
- 38:55don't see. He don't talk to anybody.
- 38:57Not then, no, no, you know, again, not then I mean, like,
- 39:01you know, he'd roll out of bed and he would go and he'd
- 39:04practice the car, but you wouldn't see him going out and
- 39:08holding court. He went in the life at the
- 39:10party, not at not at the parties that were very public.
- 39:15You know, you have that wiring that where you can just talk to
- 39:19a stranger and make them feel amazing.
- 39:24But not everybody's wired like you.
- 39:25In fact, most people probably aren't.
- 39:27They're probably somewhere in between a Kenny Wallace and a
- 39:29Dale Junior, again, Dale Junior then.
- 39:32So he was very much an introvert.
- 39:33A lot of people drew assumptions based off that.
- 39:37And it wasn't until you're having them at the download that
- 39:41a lot of this stuff was being, a lot of healing was happening.
- 39:44And that was obvious to me. Again, how am I tell you
- 39:46something? The one that really sticks out
- 39:49to me, Kenny, is Schrader. Oh gosh, yes.
- 39:53So here it is again. I didn't know, but Dale Junior
- 39:57had written a letter to Schrader and I don't think Dale Junior
- 40:01even knew if he was going to read it to him.
- 40:03And we were closing down the show and Dale and I thought we
- 40:08were done. And and then Dale.
- 40:12Says, hey, I got something I want to read you.
- 40:14And he starts reading that letter about the day Schrader
- 40:19looked in that window. And we're all just like, trying
- 40:23to keep it together. Oh, it was heavy, and Schrader's
- 40:25trying to keep it together. And so I'm like, man, I guess
- 40:31this is the long way around. To your point, have we changed
- 40:35NASCAR? No, I think we're just having
- 40:37conversations. And I think Dale Junior's
- 40:39finding fulfillment in, in, in this type of format, in this,
- 40:45he's having long form conversations when otherwise
- 40:48he'd never have them, right? He'd never had the opportunity.
- 40:52But it's a safe, comfortable way for Dale Junior, the lifelong
- 40:56introvert, the shy kid that you know, who was always undersized
- 41:00and, and, and bouncing from school to school to school to
- 41:03school and can't even stay in the school.
- 41:05And now he's now found a way to have comfortable conversation
- 41:11and people are taking him up on it, right?
- 41:14Yourself, all of these people that you would think that he's
- 41:17been having a conversation. You know, Richie Gilmore was
- 41:21just last. Year that was.
- 41:22That was heavy. Rich, Dale Junior wanted to tell
- 41:24Richie, look, it wasn't your fault.
- 41:27You, you know, You know, the way the DEI sort of ended.
- 41:31Richie always sort of, we had learned, blamed himself.
- 41:35And Dale Junior's now telling Richie, it wasn't your fault, I
- 41:39promised it wasn't your fault or I'm sorry.
- 41:41Richie took blamed himself for Dale Junior leaving the company.
- 41:45And Dale, where else is Dale Junior and Richie Gilmour going
- 41:49to have that conversation? And so that's where I recognize
- 41:54the impact that the show is at, for sure.
- 41:58It is of my opinion, if we're to put a percentage to this zero to
- 42:02100%, I feel like the Dale Junior download has been 70% and
- 42:09this is this is a debate. The percentage can be a debate,
- 42:14but I'm saying it's been 70% therapy because the people that
- 42:20have come on, I mean, I came on and you guys saved my life
- 42:24because when everybody watched that about me, the every dirt
- 42:29racing after I did the Dale Junior download, everywhere I
- 42:34went, everybody understood me, loved me more.
- 42:39They're like, all right, Wallace, wow, that was
- 42:41incredible. And I know that's got to be that
- 42:43way for everybody. I mean, so for me, 70% of the
- 42:47Dale Junior download so far has been about what you just said,
- 42:52you know, therapy, healing. Now they say the best laid plans
- 42:57are the ones that are not planned.
- 42:58But I agree with that. That could have never been
- 43:00planned. No, no, no, come.
- 43:05On our show, it's therapy. Can you imagine how the
- 43:08conversation would have gone? Hey, Dale Junior.
- 43:10I got an idea. It's a way for you to talk to
- 43:12people about your dad. It's going to be great, you
- 43:17know? No, that's not how that would
- 43:18have gone. But let me tell you, there's
- 43:20also another thing we're missing here.
- 43:22And that's what what it's doing for Dale.
- 43:24And you fit in this bucket, I think.
- 43:27Dale Junior again, the purpose of the Dale Junior download is
- 43:30for Dale junior. I think Dale is still I don't I
- 43:36don't want to overstate this. Let me see how to say it.
- 43:39I think Dale Dale junior likes having people that had good
- 43:42relationships with his dad or even questionable Ricky Rudd.
- 43:47You know, maybe not the best relationship with Dale
- 43:49Earnhardt, but people got to remember, I don't, you know,
- 43:55Dale, It wasn't like he and Dale Senior had the the tightest
- 43:59relationship growing up. Dale Senior was off being the
- 44:02greatest ever. And Dale Junior's back, you
- 44:05know, bouncing from homes and bouncing around to schools and
- 44:10stuff. That's where Kelly, I always
- 44:12said is the most influential person.
- 44:14But it wasn't until Dale Junior started racing and I could even
- 44:18make an argument that it was why Dale Junior started racing, was
- 44:22to, was to get closer to his dad.
- 44:25I still think Dale's getting closer to his dad and he's doing
- 44:28it through the people that had the tight relationships with
- 44:30him, the hunting buddies, the people like yourself who raced
- 44:33with him and raced for him and race and, and, and the people
- 44:36that work for him. Hank Parker 100%.
- 44:40His his quote about two months ago brought me to tears.
- 44:44He he said Dale Junior for everybody's watching right now,
- 44:48go go back through the Dale Junior download and about it was
- 44:52about two months ago. Hank Parker senior, the dad, he
- 44:56says, I think is that is that what we call him?
- 45:00We call him a senior, right? And he and he looks at Dale
- 45:03Junior right in the face and he says, your father loved you.
- 45:06And he just had a difficult way of telling you, oh, every child
- 45:11in the world can relate with that.
- 45:14And what what an amazing gift, by the way, you think about the
- 45:18gift. Where do you think about the
- 45:20gift? And it's not lost on me.
- 45:22And I don't think it's lost on Dale to be able to still hear
- 45:25that 20 years later. And that is you're getting
- 45:32insight from from the past, right?
- 45:35Like from the past. It's why, you know, it's like
- 45:36when we do Ancestry, do your genealogy and stuff, you're
- 45:40trying to learn about you, about yourself, where you came from,
- 45:42what about your family. And you know, that was a, that
- 45:47was a huge moment. My dad loves me, he really did.
- 45:50Wow, right. Huge moment.
- 45:54And there's a lot of those moments, right?
- 45:57And I think that that's where Dale uses the download.
- 46:00Certainly not every single week, but the download has been a
- 46:03mechanism in which Dale Junior can still learn about his dad,
- 46:08right? Like the hunting buddies, the
- 46:10people that raced with him, because those are the ones that
- 46:13really got that time. Dale Junior didn't get that
- 46:16time, not until he really started racing, not even start
- 46:19racing, I'd say when he started driving for DEI, you know, and,
- 46:24and winning the championship in 98.
- 46:28That's where you see a lot of those pictures and things where
- 46:31Dale Earnhardt, you know, Dale Junior started winning and and
- 46:34that was something and now they could spend time with each
- 46:36other, which also makes the story so tragic, right, because
- 46:38you lost him in 2001. It's it's a heck of a story,
- 46:43man. And and it's and it's still
- 46:45played out and and again, not the reason why we started the
- 46:47download, not the reason why dirty moment exist, but it's
- 46:51obvious that that's how that it it serves us and it serves Dale
- 46:55in that way. And that is where we are.
- 46:58And that's, you know, we are we are celebrating your your
- 47:02career, Mike, but we we can't we can't talk about Kenny Wallace
- 47:06unless Rusty's involved, because if it weren't for Rusty, I'd
- 47:09never be where I'm at. And you know, it is about you.
- 47:13It was your idea. I I think what let's wrap this
- 47:17up. It was your idea.
- 47:21And like we said here, it's become this big therapy session
- 47:26and it is must listen. Once we start listening to the
- 47:30Dale Junior download, it's like people for weeks and let's go,
- 47:33my God, did you hear what you know Brian France said?
- 47:36Did you hear what Hank Parker said?
- 47:37And that's where I wanted to get with this.
- 47:40It just seems like Dale Junior downloaded 70% therapy session
- 47:45for everything that's happened. And I mean it has made many
- 47:47people go, Oh my God, I never knew, but did you hear?
- 47:51That's why that happened 20 years ago and why did nobody And
- 47:55it's like, why did nobody ever mention that?
- 47:57But I just and now I'm done with that.
- 47:59But what I want to do, I want to say you to an ending, is that it
- 48:03amazes me that people kept that in their belly for 20 years.
- 48:08Right it. Shows it shows the download to
- 48:12deliver the goods. Oh, you know what it says?
- 48:15It says you drivers, you drivers don't talk to each other at all.
- 48:19And you're the exception to the rule.
- 48:21But it's like, you know, I want to.
- 48:26I'm going to get your opinion on something I want.
- 48:28I remember Dale Junior. All right, so I'm going to get
- 48:31your opinion on this and this, this might explain how I look at
- 48:35drivers. Drivers are a rare breed, right?
- 48:38You got to be because you guys, you live in a, in a, in a
- 48:42danger, dangerous, you know, you're on the edge of your seat
- 48:45all the time. And much like comedians, you
- 48:50know, comedians, people think, well, these comedians are just
- 48:54the funniest people ever. Really.
- 48:56They they have a dark side, right?
- 48:59They're they're not that smart, right?
- 49:02Right. You know.
- 49:03So, so drivers, I think on the surface, you know, it looks
- 49:08like, oh, they're, they're, they talk.
- 49:12They, they, they're, you know, they obviously they're in the
- 49:14motorhome lot. So if they're motorhome lot,
- 49:15must be a big old campfire. Like they all get together and
- 49:18just sit there and hang out. But I my observations, or at
- 49:22least my experience has been that drivers don't talk to each
- 49:25other at all. And, and, and you would be the
- 49:29exception to the rule. But again, I would say this when
- 49:32Dale Junior, when, when Kevin Harvick pissed us off so much
- 49:36and he, he hurt, he hurt Dale. We, we, I, I love Kevin Harvick
- 49:41so much and I will always love him for what he get.
- 49:44He did for Junior Motorsports and this is such a blip on his
- 49:47radar when he came to JRM. But he was, he was so much fun
- 49:53and he was so competitive and he brought back a, a, a winning
- 49:56spirit that in a place that really needed it, which made the
- 50:00comments that he made about Dale after Dale was retiring, it made
- 50:05it hurtful. And my point on this is that I
- 50:08remember Dale Junior talking to me and he said, Hey, listen,
- 50:11man, why are you have it? What what, what are you?
- 50:14So why are you struggling with this?
- 50:16And I said, because I thought Kevin was our friend.
- 50:17And he goes, There's not friends in NASCAR.
- 50:20That's right. He goes, there's not.
- 50:22He goes and I said that's not true.
- 50:24And he goes, I'm telling you the, the friend your, your, your
- 50:28tightest friends, your closest friends.
- 50:29Do you think they're in the sport?
- 50:31Like he's asking me personally, I'm like, no, my closest friends
- 50:35are the ones I went to high school with.
- 50:39I don't want to say that the friendships in NASCAR are all
- 50:42superficial, but all I'm saying on this is that we're in this.
- 50:48We're in an entertainment industry where you have to sing
- 50:50and dance and you have to perform and you have to say the
- 50:52right things. Because if you don't say the
- 50:54right thing, it's going to, you know, it's going to, you're
- 50:56going to get slapped, however that is.
- 50:59And, and, and so everyone's on edge and nobody's talking to
- 51:03each other. They're afraid.
- 51:05You're afraid to really be vulnerable to a situation,
- 51:08aren't you? You're afraid because what are
- 51:10the repercussions to it? You know, and, and I think
- 51:14that's a deep explanation, very deep, but I do think that
- 51:17there's something to it. I think that if if we developed
- 51:21a mechanism in which we can circumvent that, what is a
- 51:25natural tendency that I think we're race car drivers and the
- 51:29people in the profession don't have rich, you know,
- 51:33conversation and don't really get to to to know each other
- 51:36deeply. That's where I think we've been
- 51:39able to find a way around it a little bit, But I would now.
- 51:43What's your opinion? I wanted to know do are are
- 51:46there true friendships in NASCAR or do you do you find your
- 51:52friendships the ones that mean the most to you are beyond the
- 51:57the driver's seat? And This is why you should have
- 52:00never left as the Co host of Dale Junior Download because no,
- 52:05I'm teasing and that's going to be the next question.
- 52:09The next question I'm going to ask, I'm going to answer you.
- 52:12But I want to keep myself honest.
- 52:13Here you are the former Co host of Dale Junior Download and you
- 52:17left for great reasons. But let me answer that question
- 52:20because you just reminded me how good you are at this.
- 52:23Here's this is Kenny Wallace. I'm going to answer that.
- 52:28I try very hard. You're right.
- 52:30I am wired differently than most people.
- 52:33I want to be your friend. Then I want to go on the
- 52:35racetrack. I want to race the hell out of
- 52:36you. You hit me, you spin me out.
- 52:39You know, you know we're going to argue about it.
- 52:42I'll decide whether I'm going to forgive you or not.
- 52:45My brother Rusty explained this to me.
- 52:48He was watching me out of his motor coach window at at at
- 52:56Bristol and I was talking to Steve Grissom, Chuck Mound and I
- 53:00heard Kenny, Kenny. I turn around.
- 53:02That's Rusty. I'm like, this is strange.
- 53:06I kind of think you need something.
- 53:08He walks in there. I walk into Rusty's motor coach.
- 53:11He looks at me, goes, what the hell are you talking to those
- 53:14guys for? I said to my friends.
- 53:16He goes, no, they're not. He said.
- 53:18None of them guys are your friends.
- 53:19He said, and here's what he said.
- 53:21They're all trying to get you and, and a lot of things that I
- 53:25use right now, like like me talking right now, this is real.
- 53:29The face that I'm using. This is the real Kenny.
- 53:31Most what I do is a Saturday Night Live in your window.
- 53:35I'm the greatest nobody better than you.
- 53:37You know, it's like the church lady.
- 53:40Where did he get the church lady, you know, on on Saturday
- 53:42Night Live? Well, that's because he went to
- 53:44church and he surveyed and it's all the women with their hair
- 53:47poofed up. So basically everything I do is
- 53:50a comedy about what I you know, I'm the greatest, nobody better
- 53:55than you. Why do you try beating me on
- 53:57social media? You know, I'm the greatest.
- 53:59That's Rusty. That's Dale Earnhardt Senior.
- 54:03That's Ricky Rudd. That is David Pearson, man,
- 54:09Richard Petty. I mean, Richard's the king.
- 54:11But buddy, you know, you don't got to ask me, but you know
- 54:17those guys that I just mentioned, they have no time for
- 54:20you because they are the greatest.
- 54:22You're in my way. So when you race, here's my
- 54:30opinion. I want to be their friends,
- 54:32right? And then I see the side of them.
- 54:35I'm like, oh, he's a prick. I don't think I want to be his
- 54:38friend. And for me, that's it.
- 54:41There, there are people that I that I try to be friends with
- 54:44and I'm like, Nope, you know, they're just they're dark.
- 54:48There's something wrong with them.
- 54:50They they don't enrich me. They don't give me happiness.
- 54:54And, and you know, that's my answer to you.
- 54:57So many of these athletes live their self worth.
- 55:02So, so in other words, NASCAR drivers judge here.
- 55:07This is the quote. NASCAR drivers judge their self
- 55:12worth, how the car goes in circles.
- 55:16That's it. That's all there is to it.
- 55:18And, and, and they could win one NASCAR Cup championship and they
- 55:22could win 30 races. And I and I would brag on them
- 55:26on any conversation. And the first time they come
- 55:29back was all the races that didn't go good.
- 55:33So I can't be friends with anybody because they're just
- 55:36pricks. They really are.
- 55:37There's no, there's hardly anybody that's good that they
- 55:40just are, they're, you know, and it's just the way it is.
- 55:45It's athleticism as it is, you know, you read all them stories
- 55:49about Michael Jordan. He don't hang out with Scottie
- 55:52Pippen, you know, or any of those guys.
- 55:56And it's really an athleticism curse.
- 56:01You know, I say athleticism. I use that word a lot lately.
- 56:04It's kind of a comedy. But if you're an athlete and
- 56:06you're a good one, I'm the exception.
- 56:10I I'm a good racer. I'm not a great racer, but I can
- 56:15be really nice to you and then I can throw you a slider coming
- 56:18for the win and you're just going to have to eat it.
- 56:21But I can still be your friend. It's up to you if you want to be
- 56:23my friend or not. I can beat Mike.
- 56:27I can be a Dick and I I really am.
- 56:29I'd say at heart I'm a prick, but I try to clean it up to get
- 56:33along with people. I put a lot of effort into my
- 56:35friends. I put a lot of effort into Dale
- 56:37Junior. I really do, you know?
- 56:41So there's your answer. Yeah.
- 56:43And if you don't put that effort within, then then the friendship
- 56:47isn't what it is. It requires that much effort
- 56:49from you. It requires that.
- 56:50And, and, and that's no knock on anybody else.
- 56:53Again, I, you know, you said something that's interesting and
- 56:56I, I tend to believe it. Like the, the true great ones
- 56:58you mentioned Michael Jordan. Like, I think that what you're
- 57:01seeing is that they choose to be great by sacrificing some things
- 57:07around them, which is likeability or friendships or
- 57:12social event, whatever it is. I mean, like you can you be
- 57:14great and do all those things? Maybe somebody can, but that's
- 57:17an instinctual thing. Maybe you're just born with that
- 57:19ability, but for the most part, there's a sacrifice to being
- 57:22great or even being good. And where do you sacrifice?
- 57:26Where do you cut? Like, you know, where, where,
- 57:28where do you, where do you say, no, I'm not going to bend on
- 57:31this. This is where this is just the
- 57:32way it's going to be. And I just see that, especially
- 57:34in this sport, like there's a lot of people that would say
- 57:37that they're friends, but they don't practice friendship.
- 57:42I've only seen a couple real friends to this day and it
- 57:45sticks in my head. I truly believe that Jeff Burton
- 57:49was good friends with John Andretti.
- 57:52I really believe that whether they were or not, they tried.
- 57:57I saw them literally going out to eat with each other here.
- 58:02I'll just let's end this subject like this.
- 58:05If you're in the NASCAR Cup Series and you're trying to be
- 58:08friends with another driver, it, it, it's, it's got to go through
- 58:13the wives somewhat, you know, because the guys, the wives got
- 58:18to smooth it over because you're, you're, you're eating
- 58:22and you're like, somebody's trying to get me somehow.
- 58:26You know, it's this dinner is only going to go good if he
- 58:29outrun me the week before. But all right, we got to move on
- 58:32because I'm already at a damn hour with you.
- 58:36You knew this wasn't going to be a quick one.
- 58:37I know it wasn't going to be, but God, it's so good because
- 58:40you were giving us such a great insight on Dirty MO Media that
- 58:46to me changed NASCAR forever in a good positive way, because I
- 58:51believe it. I I believe dirty MO media and
- 58:54the Dale junior download. This is my opinion.
- 58:56I think it has made people heal. I I think it made Brian France,
- 59:02you know, I mean, my God, the greatest in the sport.
- 59:04OK, I've been trying to keep it. It is about you.
- 59:10So you're you're the former Co host of the Dale Junior download
- 59:14and you asked me some great questions.
- 59:19Why did you remove your your you are your own boss.
- 59:24You and Dale junior boss each other around.
- 59:27Why did you leave being the Co host?
- 59:30It was time. It was time.
- 59:33I, I, I wasn't enjoying it as much.
- 59:38I felt like the show needed to change and I felt like, I just
- 59:41felt like it was time. I mean, sometimes you just kind
- 59:45of have that, that, that instinct that like, oh, wait a
- 59:48second. I mean, as much as I sometimes
- 59:51you have to really self reflect, right?
- 59:54And I'm maybe you, you know, you, you've probably done this.
- 59:56Like when you you go, OK, I want to, I want to, I, I don't want
- 1:00:01to try keeping this NASCAR thing going.
- 1:00:03Like, you know, at some point you had to have a conversation
- 1:00:06with, you had a tiny conversation with yourself,
- 1:00:08right? I left.
- 1:00:09I left Charlotte. I got the hell out of that
- 1:00:11right. And, and so I just listen, it's
- 1:00:15Dale's show, OK? Not a single day did I ever go
- 1:00:21into that thinking anything other than it's Dale's show,
- 1:00:25it's Dale's show. It just it's Dale's show.
- 1:00:28I wanted to devote the time that it was taking to be on the show.
- 1:00:36I wanted to channel that into the company.
- 1:00:40And so I was, let me see how to say this.
- 1:00:44I was starting to get, I was starting to hold a bit of a
- 1:00:48grudge. Not at anybody in particular,
- 1:00:51but just at the situation that I wasn't being able to really kind
- 1:00:55of put my efforts and energy and thoughts into the company and,
- 1:01:00and starting new shows and doing those things and still doing the
- 1:01:04download. The download was a commitment.
- 1:01:05Now it's a commitment and it still is a commitment.
- 1:01:08And I, I, I just felt like it was time for me to take some of
- 1:01:15that time back and put it into the company because we're going
- 1:01:18to need it now. Because I don't know if you know
- 1:01:21this, but a lot of you content creators just started sprouting
- 1:01:23up over the past couple years and now you start competition.
- 1:01:26You. I want, I want to make this
- 1:01:28clear. Dirty MO Media started all this.
- 1:01:32Dale Junior called me and, and, and I'm going to go ahead and
- 1:01:35say this because I think it will make him look good there.
- 1:01:38Nothing really makes him look bad.
- 1:01:42In other words. In other words, I have no dirt
- 1:01:44on Dale Junior. He calls me and you know, and
- 1:01:48I've said this before, he's probably called me five times
- 1:01:51and he always text me, but when he calls me, I'm like, oh, oh,
- 1:01:54crap. And he said, I just want to let
- 1:01:56you know something, He says you're doing your show, we're
- 1:02:00doing ours. Every once in a while, we're
- 1:02:02going to overlap gas without knowing it and just know
- 1:02:05nothing. This is quote I wanted to reach
- 1:02:09through the phone and hugging Dale Junior, said Kenny Wallace.
- 1:02:13Nothing will ever come between our friendship.
- 1:02:16We are friends forever. But every once in a while, you
- 1:02:20and I might interview the same people and you might get a
- 1:02:23different answer. And that's the only reason he
- 1:02:26called me. And it was just unbelievable.
- 1:02:29So you started all this, Mike Davis.
- 1:02:34And of course, Charlie called me up because podcasting became
- 1:02:40this new thing. So yeah, all the credit to you.
- 1:02:45You were the original podcaster in NASCAR.
- 1:02:48Well, listen, I don't I I humbly disagree, but that's OK.
- 1:02:53My story your. Story.
- 1:02:55Right, I, I will say that though, going back to your
- 1:02:58question, like I, I also had a bit of again, I, I, I was taking
- 1:03:07exception. I wouldn't say it made me angry.
- 1:03:09I don't say anything like that, but my identity, my value is on
- 1:03:17what the future of the company is, But it it, it, I didn't love
- 1:03:21the fact that my identity. People would think that I'm just
- 1:03:23here to be a Co host on the Dell junior download.
- 1:03:26Like like I, I don't know what that was.
- 1:03:28That was something that that I was having to really kind of
- 1:03:30wrestle with. And I just because I have bigger
- 1:03:35plans, right? Like my, my vision for this was
- 1:03:38not going to be relegated to the Dell Junior download only the
- 1:03:41Dell Junior download is a huge piece of it.
- 1:03:44But the fact of the matter is it's a huge piece of it.
- 1:03:46But it's Dale's show and I need that to keep going because it's
- 1:03:51still, there's a lot. I, I still think there's a lot
- 1:03:54to still do. There's still a lot of healing.
- 1:03:55There's still a lot of conversations that need to be
- 1:03:57had there. We got a lot of people that we
- 1:03:58want on the show. But it just, I, I just didn't
- 1:04:02think it needed me anymore. And so I told Dale midway
- 1:04:08through last year, like June ish July, that this was kind of
- 1:04:11going to let's, I'll finish out this year.
- 1:04:13But like we, I really was looking forward to spending time
- 1:04:18with my partners out in LA, spending time with people that
- 1:04:21are, you know, helping me build the company.
- 1:04:23And that's what I really get excited about.
- 1:04:26That's when I'm in my happy place.
- 1:04:29That's my driver's seat. It's not it, it's not on.
- 1:04:32It's not in front of a camera, frankly, you know, you and I had
- 1:04:35this conversation when you asked me to be on this.
- 1:04:37It's like, you know, you know, I I'm not, I'm not comfortable
- 1:04:42necessarily being in front of camera.
- 1:04:43So that's people would think that that's a hard to believe.
- 1:04:47In fact, a lot of people that sit there and think that I was
- 1:04:49on the download for myself. I couldn't have it more wrong,
- 1:04:53but like, that's not, I'm not most comfortable in that
- 1:04:56situation. I liked it.
- 1:04:57I like the company and the vision and the mission that we
- 1:04:59have. Kitty, you know, what excites me
- 1:05:01and what makes it, what fulfills me is, you know, the building of
- 1:05:04the shows in what you and I are doing together.
- 1:05:08Like that's what I get excited about.
- 1:05:09Like, you know, building that show out, being able to tell
- 1:05:12those stories, you getting into your brain and getting into
- 1:05:15Schrader's break. Like that's where I'm really in
- 1:05:17my happiest. And, and so that's, I don't
- 1:05:20know, that's a long answer to kind of like why I made the
- 1:05:22decision to leave the download. But again, as you know, I
- 1:05:27haven't left the download at all.
- 1:05:28I'm still producing the download.
- 1:05:30I've been it's, it's as I'm as involved and as it's as
- 1:05:34important to me as it ever was and I'm just not in front of the
- 1:05:38camera anymore. So I want to, I always want, I
- 1:05:43always like making people feel good.
- 1:05:45And Kenny, Kenny Schrader made me feel a little guilty because
- 1:05:49he, he said as we were promoting the show, the new show coming
- 1:05:52up, whatever it's going to be called.
- 1:05:54But he said, I don't want to hear everybody's opinion.
- 1:06:00That's what Schrader said. I'm like, well, you're wrong.
- 1:06:01I do want to hear everybody's opinion.
- 1:06:03So I'm going to give you my opinion.
- 1:06:05My opinion is that you made the right move getting off as it
- 1:06:09goes. I believe you are more enriched
- 1:06:12and you are more like this. You're more popular now because
- 1:06:16everybody knows you are in. You are the, you know, kind of
- 1:06:20the guy that makes it all happen.
- 1:06:22You are that like like that executive that that is, in my
- 1:06:25opinion, good move. I like it.
- 1:06:29And now I'm going to ask a controversial question and I
- 1:06:33want I want you to straighten everybody out, including me who
- 1:06:37owns. And yet I don't expect you to
- 1:06:40tell me like exactly. But how does this split up
- 1:06:45between you and Dale Junior? Do you own it?
- 1:06:47Do you own dirty MO Media or you and him partners?
- 1:06:52He's the he's got the majority stake.
- 1:06:55OK, that's but but you and. By the way, as as he should,
- 1:07:02right? Here's the thing.
- 1:07:03Here's the thing that everybody needs to understand.
- 1:07:07If Dirty MO Media screws up, it looks way worse on Dale Junior
- 1:07:11than it does Mike Davis, right? His name's out.
- 1:07:14There, yeah, he's the one that he's the one that SportsCenter
- 1:07:19will make a story about. He's the one that.
- 1:07:21So no, this is a Dale Junior company.
- 1:07:25Do I own some of it? Yes, but that's only because
- 1:07:29again, again, I go back to Dale and Kelly always, just always
- 1:07:38just showing me the the the utmost appreciation and
- 1:07:44compliments. I don't, you know, whether or
- 1:07:45not that's even what they're trying to do, but that that that
- 1:07:48was a gesture that that they gave me and I will always be
- 1:07:52indebted for it. I'm doing, I'm living my dream.
- 1:07:56I'm I work in racing and I work in NASCAR and I work for Dale
- 1:08:00Earnhardt Junior and I have for 20 years.
- 1:08:04And the two years before that was with Jimmy Spencer and I
- 1:08:06value that as well, right? And.
- 1:08:09And and look here it, it's you know it, it's right here and
- 1:08:13we're. Going to we're going to end
- 1:08:14there. We're going to end we're we're
- 1:08:15starting the movie early. And yeah.
- 1:08:18But but I'm just saying, Kenny, I'm just saying this is my
- 1:08:21dream. I'm in media.
- 1:08:23I what I went to college for. I'm I'm playing out and I'm
- 1:08:27doing it in this environment. I'm a blessed man.
- 1:08:31And so the fact that Dale and I are partners in that is also an
- 1:08:34amazing gesture and amazing thing.
- 1:08:36And also I feel the responsibility of that a lot of
- 1:08:40people sit there. I want to own this.
- 1:08:41I want to own that. I wanted to feel the pressure of
- 1:08:46it. I want because it's easy to
- 1:08:48spend Dale Junior's money or it's easy to go grow something
- 1:08:54on the back of Dale Earnhardt Junior.
- 1:08:56It's not that that there's harder ways to do it, right?
- 1:08:59There's harder ways to do it. I, I did say to Kelly and Dale
- 1:09:06that I, I do want to feel the magnitude of a decision, right?
- 1:09:10I wanted my ass on the line and there, you know, when you talk
- 1:09:15about having a stake in something that's good and bad,
- 1:09:18right? If it if it fails, I fail with
- 1:09:21it. If it sinks, I'll sink with it.
- 1:09:23I'll go down with the ship. If it succeeds, then then we can
- 1:09:27all feel good about that. But at the same time, this is my
- 1:09:30living and I'm doing something that I that, that it's a it's a
- 1:09:34dream job, right? And I get to grow media company
- 1:09:36with Dale Junior. It's a dream job.
- 1:09:38So now let's kind of turn around and go back a little bit.
- 1:09:45Why does Dale Junior and Kelly like you?
- 1:09:50Why do you guys get along 20 years?
- 1:09:54You got to reflect. You got to look internally.
- 1:09:57You've had to go down the road. Certainly every once in a while.
- 1:10:01Maybe you don't even know. But what if you dig deep?
- 1:10:04What is it that you think puts you 3 together?
- 1:10:10Because certainly Kelly could badmouth you behind your back
- 1:10:13and you know all three of you are are still going 20 years.
- 1:10:18Why? Well, I'll, I don't know, but
- 1:10:23I'll attempt an answer, OK? Yeah, that's it.
- 1:10:26I, I don't know, but I'll attempt the answer.
- 1:10:29I love talking to young people who aspire to be in this sport
- 1:10:34and I and I say the same thing to them and I maybe this has
- 1:10:38something to do with it. I don't know, but maybe it does.
- 1:10:43I've never taken a day for granted.
- 1:10:47I don't feel like I belong. I don't feel like I've earned a
- 1:10:52like I've earned some sort of job security.
- 1:10:56I've, I very much intentionally feel the opposite.
- 1:11:00I intentionally feel the opposite.
- 1:11:03I treat every day like it's a job interview, OK?
- 1:11:09Because it any day this sport can spit you out it.
- 1:11:16Look, when the lifeblood of this profession is corporate
- 1:11:19sponsorship, there's no guarantees for tomorrow, is
- 1:11:23there? None.
- 1:11:24And that's not just for drivers. Drivers are the ones that are
- 1:11:27most publicized, but that's for crew members, that's for team.
- 1:11:32It's it's for anything. So the fact of the matter is, is
- 1:11:36that, you know, I don't I, I don't know what tomorrow brings
- 1:11:43and I want to earn it right. You got to keep in mind, like,
- 1:11:48you know, I got the ray shop through my window here.
- 1:11:50That was Dale's idea. Dale wanted to have Junior
- 1:11:53Motorsports. Dale did not sign up to run a
- 1:11:57media company. Now, has he found a love for it
- 1:12:00and has he found a place for it? Yeah, sure.
- 1:12:03But at the end of the day, if it causes him problems, he can just
- 1:12:07shut the door, can he? I mean, and he should.
- 1:12:10He should. Because if you don't sign up for
- 1:12:12headaches in your life, you sign up to.
- 1:12:14Especially when you've reached our age, you're just looking to
- 1:12:17ride it out peacefully, right? Like you're just trying to just
- 1:12:20like get rid of your, your problems and just, you know,
- 1:12:23surround yourself with nothing but good, happy things.
- 1:12:26So if I'm not providing something that's good or happy,
- 1:12:31then you don't need me. I, you know, and, and I, I, I
- 1:12:35not only understand it, but I agree with it.
- 1:12:39I agree with it. So maybe there's something to
- 1:12:42that, because I know that we've hired people in the past that,
- 1:12:46you know, when you, when you start working for, for the
- 1:12:49Earnhardt company, if you have even a hint of ego, then you
- 1:12:56start to feel real good about yourself.
- 1:12:57And you can let a lot of the, the, the, the surrounding
- 1:13:01temptations or the surrounding influences really kind of make
- 1:13:05you put you into bad decisions or bad ideas.
- 1:13:11And one of them is thinking that you're as important as Dale.
- 1:13:15I've seen that happen. I've seen, I've seen that happen
- 1:13:19multiple times in this company where people think that they are
- 1:13:24as important as Dale Junior. And I'm like, your name ain't on
- 1:13:27the front of that building and it won't be.
- 1:13:29And also there, you know, I just, I, I just can't, I can't
- 1:13:34agree with that. I can't agree with that type of
- 1:13:37approach. So I like to go now, I like to
- 1:13:40tell my employees this and I like to tell the people that
- 1:13:43even ask about my opinion on how do I get in the sport.
- 1:13:45I say get your foot in the door. Don't ever get complacent.
- 1:13:50Get your foot in the door. And then your, your, your focus
- 1:13:54in is staying. How do you stay?
- 1:13:58And you stay by being an example and being hard to replace.
- 1:14:03And you show up and you do the right things and and and you
- 1:14:06come up with ideas where, hey, listen, in my case, Dirty MO
- 1:14:09Media. Well, you say, Oh well, big
- 1:14:11deal. Well, you got to remember
- 1:14:13something about Dirty MO Media. We were at a phase, We were at a
- 1:14:16point where we were starting to think about what does life after
- 1:14:20racing look like. For Dale Junior, we had done ATV
- 1:14:24show with Shaquille O'Neal in 2010.
- 1:14:26It was a show on ABC called Shaq Versus and Shaq came here, raced
- 1:14:31in a car against Dale Junior and Shaq's team came and we were
- 1:14:35sitting there just getting, we were just gleaning information.
- 1:14:38Hey, Shaquille O'Neal, legendary basketball player, as relevant
- 1:14:43after basketball as he was in basketball, maybe even more so.
- 1:14:47You can't, you can't count how many commercials he's been on.
- 1:14:50You can't. Good example.
- 1:14:52So Michael Strahan's another one.
- 1:14:55And these are people that we go and I go glean information like,
- 1:14:58how did you do it? How do you do this stuff?
- 1:15:00And so this was happening back as early as 2010.
- 1:15:03Dale's last season was 2017. So when you look at the, the
- 1:15:08seeds that were sown of Dirty MO Media or some of the other
- 1:15:11things we were doing, Kelly, myself, the brand team, we were
- 1:15:14already trying to think about what life after racing looks
- 1:15:16like. And I saw Dirty MO Media as one,
- 1:15:19not the only, but one way for Dale Junior's name and influence
- 1:15:26and, and, and the fans that we serve to continue beyond just
- 1:15:31the, the driver's seat and the steering wheel.
- 1:15:34So I don't even know where we were going with all this kid,
- 1:15:37No. You you know, why do you and
- 1:15:41Dale Junior and Kelly get along? And, and basically in ending,
- 1:15:45I'll capsulate it. It's because you don't think
- 1:15:48you're anybody. You you come in there and you
- 1:15:51just bust ass and you feel like you and Kelly and Junior are
- 1:15:56recognizing you all together. Just bust ass.
- 1:15:59You just work your ass off and you you don't ever gloat on any
- 1:16:02success. OK, so moving forward, and this
- 1:16:07is a fun one, when was the last time you or Kelly or or Junior
- 1:16:14argued? Oh my gosh.
- 1:16:16Tell me about them. Well, give me an inside look at
- 1:16:18A at a disagreement and and how do you how do you stay, stay
- 1:16:23friends? So I've argued a lot more with
- 1:16:30Dale than I have with Kelly. Yeah.
- 1:16:32I bet she's a bad ass. I'm afraid of her, all right.
- 1:16:37I love her. I love her and to be honest with
- 1:16:40you, I I respect Kelly's opinion so much on everything that it
- 1:16:46like for for me to even. She's smart.
- 1:16:49For for me to even refute something she says, I'll just
- 1:16:52feels off right like tell. Me about it.
- 1:16:54Tell me about a Dale Junior argument.
- 1:16:56You and him. Listen, man, I'm going to tell
- 1:16:59you something, Dale, and I've had some doozies.
- 1:17:01But to be honest with you, well, especially when we were when we
- 1:17:06were traveling. I mean, there was a point when
- 1:17:09Dale again was in that, that, that, that drought, that winning
- 1:17:14drought, right, with Hendrick and with Hendrick.
- 1:17:17And there was, he was living in a dungeon like he was living.
- 1:17:22It didn't even have any windows. It was the most dark and
- 1:17:25depressing, like a get by type of thing, like he's living above
- 1:17:29his shop while his house was being built and and we were it's
- 1:17:35just there's just there was tension.
- 1:17:38You know, I'd never once doubted that.
- 1:17:41We loved it. Of course, I love the guy.
- 1:17:43Like, you know, there was never any doubt there.
- 1:17:45But like, but we just were always tense and and it wasn't
- 1:17:50just us. It was everything, right?
- 1:17:53Everything was tense. So Dale and I would have some
- 1:17:58some good arguments. Let me think of a good one for
- 1:18:00you, because you don't. You don't really have to tell.
- 1:18:02Me No, wait a second. There's a I'm not going to
- 1:18:06confirm. I'm not going to confirm or deny
- 1:18:08this, but there's a belief that sometimes I might manufacture an
- 1:18:12argument just just because I know that after the argument,
- 1:18:17you know, you can pretty much get get anything you want from
- 1:18:20it. But like if you need that answer
- 1:18:22to be yes. Now that I don't know if that's
- 1:18:26totally true, but I know this here.
- 1:18:27Here's what I will tell you in in summation here.
- 1:18:32I've always felt like I could be honest with Dell.
- 1:18:36That's big and and he always I feel like he can be honest with
- 1:18:40me. He, he and I, I'll tell you the
- 1:18:46last one we had the good one. And now this has been about a
- 1:18:49year. Think yeah, it's been about a
- 1:18:52year. So we're due you.
- 1:18:55Guys are brothers. But but like you know, we were.
- 1:19:01We're due for an. We're due for one, right?
- 1:19:04He hey, he called me 30 minutes ago and I'm blaming you on this
- 1:19:11one, but he called me 30. He gets mad when I don't answer
- 1:19:14his call. You.
- 1:19:15Say Herman won't let me off. I tried, but no, like, you know,
- 1:19:19we had a, a pretty good disagreement or something over
- 1:19:23over. I think there was a a potential
- 1:19:27sponsor with the company that we were trying to decide on whether
- 1:19:31to take it or not and we had a disagreement on that.
- 1:19:34I believe if that that wasn't even a good we though there was
- 1:19:42one. This goes back to the driving.
- 1:19:45You're debating whether to tell me.
- 1:19:47No, no, I'm I'm trying to remember, I'm trying to give you
- 1:19:50a good story and I'm trying to think, yeah, I was like, I just
- 1:19:53realized that the one about the the the potential sponsor, not
- 1:19:56even that good of an argument. It was just but.
- 1:19:58You do argue. Yeah, I mean, we're just honest
- 1:20:02with each other. We're just honest with each
- 1:20:04other. I mean, like me.
- 1:20:05Listen, I, I can't, I can't be a guy that, that can't that, that
- 1:20:11that is dishonest or doesn't say what I think.
- 1:20:14I feel like there's a, a decision we're making.
- 1:20:16It's not good. I'm going to say it.
- 1:20:18I and you know, that may go back to answering your question of
- 1:20:21why does he keep me around? Maybe there's a value to that.
- 1:20:25You know, maybe that he's been surrounded by a bunch of yes
- 1:20:27man. I'm not a yes man, yeah, not,
- 1:20:30although there's a lot of people on social media that have always
- 1:20:33accused me of that. But again, I don't think they
- 1:20:35know us. They don't know me and they
- 1:20:37don't know Dell. And so they're just taking what
- 1:20:39you know, face value on the Dell junior download, which we've had
- 1:20:41arguments on the download too. So I.
- 1:20:43Would say in my humble opinion, honestly, it sounds to me like
- 1:20:48you 2 are brothers and that's a compliment.
- 1:20:51I, I seriously, I think you you guys are brothers.
- 1:20:54I think Kelly's your sister and all right, we're going to end it
- 1:20:58like this in a fun way. My notes say you started in 2002
- 1:21:05when Jimmy Spencer hired you. Danielle Randall hired me.
- 1:21:10Whoa. Yeah, that's her name for you
- 1:21:13now. Yeah, she was your.
- 1:21:15My PR lady. That's right.
- 1:21:17So she hired you? OK, go ahead.
- 1:21:20The Motorsports Decisions Group. Right, I'll be darned.
- 1:21:24Yes, I got a call I when I was graduating college, I, I
- 1:21:31probably sent 7080 resumes, mailed them.
- 1:21:35Somebody did an amazing thing for me.
- 1:21:37I, I want to tell you the story. This is really good.
- 1:21:39Do you remember the, the guy named Ken Patterson at
- 1:21:41Talladega? He was the, he was the head PR
- 1:21:44guy at Talladega. And he didn't know me from Adam,
- 1:21:48but we had a mutual friend, Mark Mccarter, who had been Michael
- 1:21:52Waltrip's PR guy, but he's mainly a, a newspaper guy.
- 1:21:56And I, that's how I knew Mark Mccarter.
- 1:21:58Anyways, Mark knew that I needed that I was aspiring, I was
- 1:22:02graduating college and he knew I wanted to get into racing.
- 1:22:05And, and he goes, I'm going to introduce you to a guy named Ken
- 1:22:09Patterson. He's the head guy Talladega.
- 1:22:11And they used to have those industry contact books.
- 1:22:13I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do this, but he
- 1:22:15photocopied, he faxed me back in 2001 the the contact pages of
- 1:22:23the industry contact book and, and, and so I sent resumes to
- 1:22:26every, every race team, every PR agency, any if there was a
- 1:22:31contact, a mailing address or a phone number in that book, I
- 1:22:36sent them a resume. I got 0 responses.
- 1:22:41My Lord. Until 5 or 6 months later now
- 1:22:47I'm a I'm a newspaper columnist and writer in Albany, GA and
- 1:22:53which is where I'm at my wife, my eventual wife.
- 1:22:56So there was a it was a short, quick pit stop, A2 tire stop in
- 1:23:00Albany, GA. But I did pick up a wife.
- 1:23:04And so, but I got, I got a call from Danielle Randall wasn't
- 1:23:09even Bauer at the time, I don't think.
- 1:23:11But so she, she was one of the people I'd sent a resume to.
- 1:23:17And I turned it down because I was like, yeah, I'm now got a
- 1:23:20job and I'm, you know, and she called me back a year later or a
- 1:23:25week later and said to for me to reconsider.
- 1:23:27Now, why would why would somebody who they don't know
- 1:23:30call me back if you're not desperate now, why would she be
- 1:23:34desperate? And the answer is, is that Jimmy
- 1:23:36Spencer could not find somebody to work with him.
- 1:23:44Yeah. So I end up, Long story short,
- 1:23:46taking the job and got moving to Charlotte.
- 1:23:49Didn't own a thing. Speed Weeks had already started
- 1:23:512002. Her account was with yellow
- 1:23:54transportation, Yellow, you know, the the yellow Freight
- 1:23:57trucking company. And the the team in that account
- 1:24:01was James Finch. And by the way, Kenny, you
- 1:24:04remember this Finch? Like my first race was Daytona
- 1:24:09Fitch would take a restrictor plate car and absolutely whoop
- 1:24:13their ass with it. Look at there.
- 1:24:15I'm going to say I'm going to send this to Charlie.
- 1:24:18And and there's Junior and Spencer working on speed.
- 1:24:23You 2 must still love each other.
- 1:24:25We do. But The funny thing about that
- 1:24:27picture is that Dale and Dale and Jimmy don't necessarily love
- 1:24:30each other. And so I think that picture, I
- 1:24:34look, I laugh more at the fact that Dale Junior is probably
- 1:24:36super uncomfortable in that moment.
- 1:24:39I'm sending it to Charlie right now.
- 1:24:40Charlie, drop that picture right here.
- 1:24:43But Danielle hired me and again, I, I, I knew, I knew I could not
- 1:24:50figure out how I got that job. But then I realized soon that
- 1:24:54Jimmy was not the easiest thing to work with.
- 1:24:58But Jimmy and I hit it off really well.
- 1:25:01And, and, and I, I talked to Spencer a few weeks ago, as a
- 1:25:05matter of fact. And so those two years, the
- 1:25:08first one with Finch and then the second one with Ultra
- 1:25:11Motorsports, Jimmy Smith, you know, And so those were two.
- 1:25:15I, I, I look at those years as I learned a lot of PR that year on
- 1:25:20how to crisis manage. Yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm.
- 1:25:26Great chicken salad out of chicken shit.
- 1:25:29Crisis management. The the first year he got fired
- 1:25:31by Ganassi Finch. You know, he and Finch had a
- 1:25:33little bit of a falling out. The second year, well, he
- 1:25:39punched Kurt Busch and he got suspended.
- 1:25:41So like. You were with him during that?
- 1:25:43Yeah, I was. I stood right next to him.
- 1:25:45Yeah, Oh my God, I got AI got a great stories about.
- 1:25:49That tell me exactly how that happened.
- 1:25:51Tell me your version. I'll tell you the version.
- 1:25:54Nobody knows if I think maybe me and Spencer talked about it when
- 1:25:57he was on the download, but I'll tell it here.
- 1:26:02Jimmy and Kurt obviously had had run insurance all year, started
- 1:26:06at Bristol. Jimmy almost won that Cup race
- 1:26:09and Kurt ended up winning it. And I knew Jimmy was crushed by
- 1:26:12that. But then Jimmy ends up wrecking
- 1:26:13him at Indianapolis hard. And and then here they are at
- 1:26:19Michigan and and they're racing and I mean they're beating and
- 1:26:22banging differences is that Spencer was a lap down and Kurt
- 1:26:25was leading the race and yet Jimmy is not letting him go by.
- 1:26:30And it's great. They're drag racing down the
- 1:26:32front stretch. I mean, Michigan, you know, they
- 1:26:33put up so much. I mean, they're pulling so much
- 1:26:35speed there anyways, So they had it mixed it up in that in that
- 1:26:39race. And so they're pulling into the
- 1:26:40garage and you know how that garage is laid out and Jimmy and
- 1:26:45Kurt, Jimmy's following Kurt and Kurt stops his car right in
- 1:26:50front of the lift of the of the transporter, right?
- 1:26:53A Jimmy's in front of Jimmy's. So Jimmy can't Jimmy would have
- 1:26:58liked to been able to pull his car up onto the lift, you know,
- 1:27:01help the team out. You know, they don't have to go,
- 1:27:04you know, maneuvered around it with whatever this is my vantage
- 1:27:07point. I don't even know if that's
- 1:27:08true, but I I know that he stopped in front of the lift.
- 1:27:10Jimmy Jimmy hops out and starts yelling.
- 1:27:15Now, I, I, I can't hear exactly what he's saying.
- 1:27:18I just know his head is in the in the window.
- 1:27:22And it, this is not something I, this isn't the first time I've
- 1:27:25seen this. I saw him yelling at Todd Bodine
- 1:27:28so hard after a race, think at Watkins Glen like yelling at
- 1:27:33Todd Bodine. But again, I also knew there was
- 1:27:35a history there. So I just figured, this is just
- 1:27:40Jimmy doing, you know, he's just mad about something and he's
- 1:27:42yelling at Kurt. Kurt gets out of the car and
- 1:27:45he's got blood coming down his nose.
- 1:27:46And I'm like. Oh.
- 1:27:49Oh, oh, he hitting. Oh my God, he hitting.
- 1:27:53And Kurt's saying you're done, you're over, you're nothing,
- 1:27:56you're over. And so he's going to the NASCAR
- 1:27:59hauler. So here's the fun part.
- 1:28:01The fun part is, is that Jimmy and I and Pat, his wife, who I
- 1:28:06adore. Oh, she's sweetheart.
- 1:28:09Adore. Her opposites a track.
- 1:28:11For sure. Opposite in every way possible.
- 1:28:16Oh my gosh, she's awesome. We hightail it to the car
- 1:28:20because we're getting out of that Speedway.
- 1:28:22We're not going to hang around and see what happens and we're
- 1:28:25in line and we're trying to get out on the track because, you
- 1:28:28know, it's always a race to get to the airport.
- 1:28:30Go around the back straight away.
- 1:28:31Take the roads to the airport. You got to get out on the track
- 1:28:35and all the stuff. Well, they haven't.
- 1:28:36We were so quick. They hadn't even opened up the
- 1:28:38track for us to drive out on yet.
- 1:28:41So we're in line and then finally a NASCAR official comes
- 1:28:45over and knocks on the on the door window and says come here.
- 1:28:51Almost got out of there. Almost got.
- 1:28:53Out of there, almost got out of there.
- 1:28:55And so, yeah, so we go back, we park it, we go back in the
- 1:28:58garage and then, Yep, he got called to the NASCAR hauler Jack
- 1:29:01Roush, and that whole contingent was there and.
- 1:29:06And yeah, he was in trouble at that point.
- 1:29:08And so that that was a, we get to the plane later that night
- 1:29:13and I said to him, I said, so why did you hit him?
- 1:29:20I'm like, I know about the yellow, but why'd you hit him?
- 1:29:22And he says he parked in front of my truck and I'm like.
- 1:29:27No. Why tell the?
- 1:29:29Truth. That's it.
- 1:29:30Tell the truth, Jimmy. I knew why because Jimmy still
- 1:29:39had it out to him for him. They they hated each other.
- 1:29:41I'm I'm I still think they do. I still think they do.
- 1:29:44I think that's the one thing that hey, I got another little
- 1:29:50story to you, isn't? It true that Bobby Allison and
- 1:29:52Richard Petty still don't like each other.
- 1:29:54I mean, I are one of those those guys, you know, You still here?
- 1:29:58I mean Bobby. Still, yeah.
- 1:30:01There's not a lot of forgiveness in this sport.
- 1:30:02There's, there's a, you could put a Band-Aid on it a little
- 1:30:06bit and, and just, you can, you can act appropriate at the, at
- 1:30:09the functions and the things and you can do what's good for your
- 1:30:11sponsor. But deep down there's, there's a
- 1:30:14lot of aggression. Probably still to this day, they
- 1:30:16probably care. And here's what I wanted to tell
- 1:30:18you. So Kurt Busch and I never had a
- 1:30:20relationship and I, I didn't even know the guy until much,
- 1:30:24much later. And Kurt had come on the
- 1:30:27download and then we would started chit chatting afterwards
- 1:30:30and he wanted, he and I started talking about content ideas
- 1:30:33together. And I said, hey Kurt, I got the
- 1:30:35best idea. I got the best idea for you.
- 1:30:38I know where this is going, I said.
- 1:30:40Because he also knew that he was he was planning for retirement.
- 1:30:46He was thinking about it. And I said, you should do a
- 1:30:49documentary. Let me do it where you go.
- 1:30:54You go to everybody that you've run into or crossed.
- 1:30:58And that list is long. You go, go to go and you, you
- 1:31:04seek out conversation with them and, and attempt forgiveness.
- 1:31:11And that means all of them. That means, I mean, gosh, Jack
- 1:31:16Roush, Rodger Penske, the sheriff that arrested you out in
- 1:31:22Phoenix? And I drove his car the next
- 1:31:25day. Super sub that means probably
- 1:31:29Kyle on some level that maybe an ex-wife here or there and Jimmy
- 1:31:35Spencer. And would you know that Jimmy
- 1:31:38Spencer was the one that was the No no deal?
- 1:31:41I'm going to the sheriff, but I'm not going to Spencer.
- 1:31:48What are you talking about? Like, like I even had a clever
- 1:31:52name for it and everything. So, you know, I thought that
- 1:31:54was, I thought that was a good idea, but maybe we'll do that
- 1:32:00one day. But like I'm telling you, those
- 1:32:02guys, they look, it's OK. Sometimes you just don't like
- 1:32:04the other fella, right? Sometimes you just don't like
- 1:32:07them. There's people I don't, I
- 1:32:09choose, I want to like them. They're just, they're too dark.
- 1:32:12They don't bring anything good and anything, anything to do is
- 1:32:15fake, you know? So I'm with you.
- 1:32:18Listen, Mike, you have been wonderful.
- 1:32:21You really have. And these are some of these
- 1:32:24conversations where I'm like, we need a Part 2 because it's for
- 1:32:28me, it's kind of like through the through the lens of Mike
- 1:32:31Davis, you've carved your own path.
- 1:32:34You sent out 80 resumes. You went to, you know, Georgia
- 1:32:39Southern University. You removed yourself from, you
- 1:32:45know, the Dale Junior download. You just keep creating your
- 1:32:49life. And I want to thank you so much
- 1:32:52for being on Kenny conversation. And I know there's more to talk
- 1:32:55about, but there's there'll just be another another one.
- 1:32:59And thank you for being on. Thank you for having me.
- 1:33:04Still don't know that anybody will watch this one, Kenny.
- 1:33:06But you said it didn't matter. So I said, all right, I'm there
- 1:33:09buddy, whatever you want. They, they will listen and we,
- 1:33:14we still got to get to actions detrimental and Oh yeah, that'll
- 1:33:18be another day. That'll be another day.
- 1:33:20Listen everybody, we are in podcast form, iTunes and
- 1:33:24Spotify. Check us out, Kenny.
- 1:33:27Conversation just keeps on rolling until the next time.
- 1:33:30We'll see you then.
