Speaker 1: Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, Chapter one, looking

Speaker 1: Glass House. One thing was certain that the white kitten
• 0:11
Speaker 1: had nothing to do with it. It was the black
• 0:14
Speaker 1: kitten's fault entirely, For the white kitten had been having
• 0:18
Speaker 1: its face washed by the old cat for the last
• 0:21
Speaker 1: quarter of an hour, and bearing it pretty well, considering,
• 0:25
Speaker 1: so you could see that it couldn't have had any
• 0:27
Speaker 1: hand in the mischief. The way Diana washed her children's
• 0:32
Speaker 1: faces was this. First she held the poor thing down
• 0:36
Speaker 1: by its ear with one paw, and then with the
• 0:39
Speaker 1: other paw she rubbed its face all over the wrong way,
• 0:44
Speaker 1: beginning at the nose. And just now, as I said,
• 0:47
Speaker 1: she was hard at work on the white kitten, which
• 0:50
Speaker 1: was lying quite still and trying to purr, no doubt,
• 0:54
Speaker 1: feeling that it was all meant for its good. But
• 0:58
Speaker 1: the black kitten had been finished with earlier in the afternoon,
• 1:01
Speaker 1: and so while Alice was sitting curled up in a
• 1:04
Speaker 1: corner of the great arm chair, half talking to herself
• 1:08
Speaker 1: and half asleep, the kitten had been having a grand
• 1:11
Speaker 1: game of romps with the ball of woosted that Alice
• 1:15
Speaker 1: had been trying to wind up and had been rolling
• 1:17
Speaker 1: it up and down till it had all come undone again.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: And there it was spread over the hearth rug, all
• 1:24
Speaker 1: knots and tangles, with the kitten running after its own
• 1:28
Speaker 1: tail in the middle. Oh, you wicked little thing, cried Alice,
• 1:33
Speaker 1: catching up the kitten and giving it a little kiss
• 1:36
Speaker 1: to make it understand that it was in disgrace. Really,
• 1:40
Speaker 1: Dinah ought to have taught you better manners. You ought, Dinah,
• 1:44
Speaker 1: you know you ought, she added, looking reproachfully at the
• 1:48
Speaker 1: old cat and speaking in as cross a voice as
• 1:51
Speaker 1: she could manage. And then she scrambled back into the armchair,
• 1:55
Speaker 1: taking the kitten and the woosted with her, and began
• 1:58
Speaker 1: winding up the ball again. But she didn't get on
• 2:01
Speaker 1: very fast, as she was talking all the time, sometimes
• 2:04
Speaker 1: to the kitten and sometimes to herself. Kitty sat very
• 2:09
Speaker 1: demurely on her knee, pretending to watch the progress of
• 2:12
Speaker 1: the winding, and now and then putting out one paw
• 2:16
Speaker 1: and gently touching the ball, as if it would be
• 2:19
Speaker 1: glad to help, if it might. Do you know what
• 2:22
Speaker 1: to morrow is, kitty, Alice began. You'd have guessed if
• 2:26
Speaker 1: you'd been up at the window with me. Only Dinah
• 2:29
Speaker 1: was making you tidy so you couldn't. I was watching
• 2:33
Speaker 1: the boys getting in sticks for the bonfire, and it
• 2:35
Speaker 1: wants plenty of sticks, kitty. Only it got so cold
• 2:39
Speaker 1: and it snowed, so they had to leave off. Never mind, kitty,
• 2:44
Speaker 1: we'll go and see the bonfire to morrow. Here, Alice
• 2:48
Speaker 1: wound two or three turns of the woosted round the
• 2:51
Speaker 1: kitten's neck, just to see how it would look. This
• 2:55
Speaker 1: led to a scramble in which the ball rolled down
• 2:58
Speaker 1: upon the floor, and yahards and yards of it got
• 3:01
Speaker 1: unwound again. Do you know I was so angry, kitty,
• 3:07
Speaker 1: Alice went on just as soon as they were comfortably
• 3:09
Speaker 1: settled again. When I saw all the mischief you had
• 3:13
Speaker 1: been doing, I was very nearly opening the window and
• 3:17
Speaker 1: putting you out into the snow. And you'd have deserved it,
• 3:21
Speaker 1: you little mischievous darling. What have you got to say
• 3:25
Speaker 1: for yourself? Now, don't interrupt me, she went on, holding
• 3:30
Speaker 1: up one finger. I'm going to tell you all your faults.
• 3:34
Speaker 1: Number one, you squeaked twice while Dinah was washing your
• 3:38
Speaker 1: face this morning. Now you can't deny it, Kitty, I
• 3:42
Speaker 1: heard you. What's that you say pretending that the kitten
• 3:46
Speaker 1: was speaking, her paw went into your eye. Well that's
• 3:50
Speaker 1: your fault for keeping your eyes open. If you'd shut
• 3:53
Speaker 1: them tight up, it wouldn't have happened. Now, don't make
• 3:57
Speaker 1: any more excuses, but listen. Number two, you pulled snowdrop
• 4:02
Speaker 1: away by the tail just as I'd put down a
• 4:05
Speaker 1: saucer of milk before her. What you were thirsty, were you?
• 4:10
Speaker 1: How do you know she wasn't thirsty too? Now for
• 4:14
Speaker 1: number three, you unwound every bit of the woosted while
• 4:18
  Speaker 1: I wasn't looking. That's three faults, kitty, and you've not
• 4:22
Speaker 1: been punished for any of them yet. You know I'm
• 4:25
Speaker 1: saving up all your punishments for Wednesday week. Suppose they
• 4:30
Speaker 1: saved up all my punishments. She went on, talking more
• 4:34
Speaker 1: to herself than the kitten. What would they do at
• 4:38
Speaker 1: the end of a year? I should be sent to prison,
• 4:41
Speaker 1: I suppose when the day came. Or let me see,
• 4:45
Speaker 1: suppose each punishment was to be going without a dinner.
• 4:49
Speaker 1: Then when the miserable day came, I should have to
• 4:53
Speaker 1: go without fifty dinners at once. Well I shouldn't mind
• 4:56
Speaker 1: that much. I'd far rather go without them that eat them.
• 5:01
Speaker 1: Do you hear the snow against the window panes, Kitty,
• 5:05
Speaker 1: how nice and soft it sounds, just as if someone
• 5:09
Speaker 1: was kissing the window all over outside. I wonder if
• 5:14
Speaker 1: the snow loves the trees and fields that it kisses
• 5:17
Speaker 1: them so gently, and then it covers them up snug,
• 5:20
Speaker 1: you know, with a white quilt. And perhaps it says,
• 5:24
Speaker 1: go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again. And
• 5:28
Speaker 1: when they wake up in the summer, Kitty, they dress
• 5:31
Speaker 1: themselves all in green and dance about whenever the wind blows.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: Oh that's very pretty, cried Alice, dropping the ball of
• 5:40
Speaker 1: worsted to clap her hands. And I do so wish
• 5:44
Speaker 1: it was true. I'm sure the woods look sleepy in
• 5:47
Speaker 1: the autumn when the leaves are getting brown, Kitty. Can
• 5:52
Speaker 1: you play chess now? Don't smile, my dear. I'm asking
• 5:56
Speaker 1: it seriously, because when we were playing just now, you
• 6:00
Speaker 1: watched just as if you understood it, and when I
• 6:03
Speaker 1: said check, you purred. Well it was a nice check, kitty,
• 6:09
Speaker 1: And really I might have won if it hadn't been
• 6:11
Speaker 1: for that nasty night that came wriggling down among my pieces. Kitty, Dear,
• 6:18
Speaker 1: Let's pretend and here I wish I could tell you
• 6:23
Speaker 1: half the things Alice used to say, beginning with her
• 6:26
Speaker 1: favorite phrase, Let's pretend. She had had quite a long
• 6:31
Speaker 1: argument with her sister only the day before, all because
• 6:35
Speaker 1: Alice had begun with let's pretend we're kings and queen's
• 6:39
Speaker 1: and her sister, who liked being very exact, had argued
• 6:43
Speaker 1: that they couldn't because there was only two of them,
• 6:46
Speaker 1: and Alice had been reduced at last to say, well,
• 6:49
Speaker 1: you can be one of them, and then I'll be
• 6:52
Speaker 1: the rest. And once she had really frightened her old
• 6:55
Speaker 1: nurse by shouting suddenly in her ear nurse, let's do
• 7:00
  Speaker 1: pretend that I'm a hungry hyaena and you're a bone.
• 7:04
Speaker 1: But this is taking us away from Alice's speech to
• 7:07
Speaker 1: the kitten. Let's pretend that you're the Red Queen. Kitty,
• 7:12
Speaker 1: do you know I think if you sat up and
• 7:14
Speaker 1: folded your arms, you'd look exactly like her. Now do try,
• 7:19
Speaker 1: there's a dear, and Alice got the Red Queen off
• 7:23
Speaker 1: the table and set it up before the kitten as
• 7:25
Speaker 1: a model for it to imitate. However, the thing didn't
• 7:29
Speaker 1: succeed principally, Alice said, because the kitten wouldn't fold its
• 7:34
Speaker 1: arms properly, So to punish it, she held it up
• 7:38
Speaker 1: to the looking glass that it might see how sulky
• 7:41
Speaker 1: it was. And if you're not good directly, she added,
• 7:46
Speaker 1: I'll put you through into looking glass House. How would
• 7:49
Speaker 1: you like that? Now? If you only attend, Kitty and
• 7:54
Speaker 1: not talk so much, I'll tell you all my ideas
• 7:57
Speaker 1: about looking glass House. First, there's a room you can
• 8:02
Speaker 1: see through the glass that's just the same as our
• 8:05
Speaker 1: drawing room, only the things go the other way. I
• 8:10
Speaker 1: can see all of it when I get upon a chair,
• 8:12
Speaker 1: all but the bit behind the fireplace. Oh, I do
• 8:16
Speaker 1: so wish I could see that bit. I want so
• 8:19
Speaker 1: much to know whether they have a fire in the winter.
• 8:22
Speaker 1: You never can tell, you know, unless our fire smokes,
• 8:26
Speaker 1: And then the smoke comes up in that room too,
• 8:29
Speaker 1: But that may only be a pretense, just to make
• 8:33
Speaker 1: it look as if they had a fire. Well, then
• 8:36
Speaker 1: the books are something like our books, only the words
• 8:39
Speaker 1: go the wrong way. I know that because I've held
• 8:43
Speaker 1: up one of our books to the glass, and then
• 8:45
Speaker 1: they hold up one in the other room. How would
• 8:48
Speaker 1: you like to live in Looking Glass House, Kitty? I
• 8:52
Speaker 1: wonder if they give you milk in there. Perhaps looking
• 8:55
Speaker 1: glass milk isn't good to drink. But oh, kitty, now
• 8:59
Speaker 1: we come to the passage. You can just see a
• 9:03
Speaker 1: little peep of the passage in looking Glass House if
• 9:07
Speaker 1: you leave the door of our drawing room wide open,
• 9:10
Speaker 1: and it's very like our passage as far as you
• 9:13
Speaker 1: can see. Only you know it may be quite different
• 9:16
Speaker 1: on beyond. Oh kitty, how nice it would be if
• 9:20
Speaker 1: we could only go through into looking Glass House. I'm
• 9:25
Speaker 1: sure it's got oh such beautiful things in it. Let's
• 9:29
Speaker 1: pretend there's a way of getting through into it somehow, kitty.
• 9:32
Speaker 1: Let's pretend the glass has got all soft like gauze
• 9:37
Speaker 1: so that we can get through. Why it's turning into
• 9:41
Speaker 1: a sort of mist. Now, I declare it'll be easy
• 9:45
Speaker 1: enough to get through.
• 9:47
Speaker 2: She was up on the.
• 9:48
Speaker 1: Chimney piece while she said this, though she hardly knew
• 9:52
Speaker 1: how she got there, and certainly the glass was beginning
• 9:56
Speaker 1: to melt away, just like a bright, silvery mist. In
• 10:01
Speaker 1: another moment, Alice was through the glass and had jumped
• 10:04
Speaker 1: lightly down into the looking glass room. The very first
• 10:09
Speaker 1: thing she did was to look whether there was a
• 10:12
Speaker 1: fire in the fireplace, and she was quite pleased to
• 10:15
Speaker 1: find that there was a real one blazing away as
• 10:18
Speaker 1: brightly as the one she had left behind. So I
• 10:21
Speaker 1: shall be as warm here as I was in the
• 10:24
Speaker 1: old room, thought Alice. Warmer in fact, because there'll be
• 10:28
Speaker 1: no one here to scold me away from the fire.
• 10:30
Speaker 1: And what fun it'll be when they see me through
• 10:33
Speaker 1: the glass in here and can't get at me. Then
• 10:37
Speaker 1: she began looking about and noticed what could be seen
• 10:40
Speaker 1: from the old room was quite common and uninteresting, but
• 10:44
Speaker 1: that all the rest was as different as possible. For instance,
• 10:48
Speaker 1: the pictures on the wall next to the fire seemed
• 10:52
Speaker 1: to be all alive, and the very clock in the
• 10:55
Speaker 1: chimney piece, you know, you can only see the back
• 10:58
Speaker 1: of it in the looking glass, had got the face
• 11:01
Speaker 1: of a little old man and grinned at her. They
• 11:05
Speaker 1: don't keep this room so tidy as the other, Alice
• 11:09
Speaker 1: thought to herself, as she noticed several of the chessmen
• 11:12
Speaker 1: down in the hearth among the cinders. But in another moment,
• 11:16
Speaker 1: with a little oh of surprise, she was down on
• 11:20
Speaker 1: her hands and knees watching them. The chessmen were walking
• 11:25
Speaker 1: about two and two. Here are the Red King and
• 11:29
Speaker 1: the Red Queen, Alice said in a whisper, for fear
• 11:34
Speaker 1: of frightening them. And there are the White King and
• 11:37
Speaker 1: the White Queen sitting on the edge of the shovel,
• 11:41
Speaker 1: and there are two castles walking arm in arm. I
• 11:45
Speaker 1: don't think they can hear me, she went on, as
• 11:48
Speaker 1: she put her head closer down. And I'm nearly sure
• 11:51
Speaker 1: they can't see me. I feel somehow, as if I
• 11:54
Speaker 1: were invisible. Here. Something began squeaking on the table behind
• 12:00
Speaker 1: Alice and made her turn her head just in time
• 12:03
Speaker 1: to see one of the white pawns roll over and
• 12:06
Speaker 1: begin kicking. She watched it with great curiosity to see
• 12:11
Speaker 1: what would happen next.
• 12:14
Speaker 2: It's the voice of my child.
• 12:16
Speaker 1: The White Queen cried out, as she rushed past the
• 12:20
Speaker 1: King so violently that she knocked him over among the cinders.
• 12:24
Speaker 1: My precious lily, my imperial kitten, and she began scrambling
• 12:30
Speaker 1: wildly up the side of the fender. Imperial fiddlestick, said
• 12:37
Speaker 1: the King, rubbing his nose, which had been hurt by
• 12:40
Speaker 1: the fall. He had a right to be a little
• 12:43
Speaker 1: annoyed with the Queen, for he was covered with ashes
• 12:46
Speaker 1: from head to foot. Alice was very anxious to be
• 12:49
Speaker 1: of use, and as the poor little lily was nearly
• 12:52
Speaker 1: half screaming herself into a fit, she hastily picked up
• 12:57
Speaker 1: the queen and sat her on the table by the
• 12:59
Speaker 1: side of her noisy little daughter. The queen gasped and
• 13:03
Speaker 1: sat down. The rapid journey through the air had quite
• 13:07
Speaker 1: taken away her breath, and for a minute or two
• 13:09
Speaker 1: she could do nothing but hug the little lily in silence.
• 13:14
Speaker 1: As soon as she had recovered her breath a little,
• 13:16
Speaker 1: she called out to the White King, who was sitting
• 13:19
Speaker 1: sulkily among the ashes. Mane the volcano.
• 13:24
  Speaker 2: What a volcanow?
• 13:26
Speaker 1: Said the King, looking up anxiously into the fire, as
• 13:30
Speaker 1: if he thought that it was the most likely place
• 13:32
Speaker 1: to find one. Blew me up, panted the Queen, who
• 13:37
Speaker 1: was still a little out of breath. Mind, you'll come
• 13:40
Speaker 1: up the regular way, don't get blown up. Alice watched
• 13:45
Speaker 1: the White King as he slowly struggled up from bar
• 13:49
Speaker 1: to bar, till at last she said, why, you'll be
• 13:53
Speaker 1: hours and hours getting up to the table at that rate.
• 13:57
Speaker 1: I'd far better help you, hadn't I. But the King
• 14:00
Speaker 1: took no notice of the question. It was quite clear
• 14:03
Speaker 1: that he could neither hear her nor see her. So
• 14:07
Speaker 1: Alice picked him up very gently and lifted him across
• 14:11
Speaker 1: more slowly than she had lifted the Queen, that she
• 14:14
Speaker 1: mightn't take his breath away. But before she put him
• 14:18
Speaker 1: on the table, she thought she might as well dust
• 14:21
Speaker 1: him a little. He was so covered with ashes. She
• 14:25
Speaker 1: said afterwards that she had never seen in all her
• 14:29
Speaker 1: life such a face as the King made when he
• 14:32
Speaker 1: found himself held in the air by an invisible hand
• 14:36
Speaker 1: and being dusted. He was far too much astonished to
• 14:40
Speaker 1: cry out, but his eyes and his mouth went on
• 14:43
Speaker 1: getting larger and larger, and round her and round her,
• 14:47
Speaker 1: till her hand shook so with laughing that she nearly
• 14:51
Speaker 1: let him drop upon the floor. Oh please, don't make
• 14:55
Speaker 1: such faces, my dear, she cried out, quite forgetting the
• 14:58
Speaker 1: King couldn't hear her. You make me laugh so that
• 15:02
Speaker 1: I can hardly hold you. And don't keep your mouth
• 15:05
Speaker 1: so wide open all the ashes will get into it.
• 15:09
Speaker 1: There Now, I think you're tidy enough, she added, as
• 15:12
Speaker 1: she smoothed his hair and set him upon the table
• 15:16
Speaker 1: near the queen. The King immediately fell flat on his
• 15:21
Speaker 1: back and lay perfectly still, and Alice was a little
• 15:25
Speaker 1: alarmed at what she had done, and went round the
• 15:28
Speaker 1: room to see if she could find any water to
• 15:30
Speaker 1: throw over him. However, she could find nothing but a
• 15:34
Speaker 1: bottle of ink, and when she got back with it,
• 15:36
Speaker 1: she found that he had recovered, and he and the
• 15:38
Speaker 1: queen were talking together in a frightened whisper so low
• 15:43
Speaker 1: that Alice could hardly hear what they said. The king
• 15:49
Speaker 1: was saying, I assure you, my dear, I turned cold
• 15:54
Speaker 1: to the very ends of my whiskers, to which the
• 15:57
Speaker 1: queen replied, you haven't got any whiskers.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: The horror of that.
• 16:03
Speaker 1: Moment, the King went on, I shall never never forget
• 16:09
Speaker 1: you will, though the queen said, if you don't make
• 16:12
Speaker 1: a memorandum of it. Alice looked on with great interest
• 16:16
Speaker 1: as the King took out an enormous memorandum book from
• 16:19
Speaker 1: his pocket and began writing. A sudden thought struck her,
• 16:25
Speaker 1: and she took hold of the end of the pencil,
• 16:27
Speaker 1: which came someway over his shoulder, and began writing for him.
• 16:34
Speaker 1: The poor king looked puzzled and unhappy, and struggled with
• 16:37
Speaker 1: the pencil for some time without saying anything. That Alice
• 16:40
Speaker 1: was too strong for him. And at last he panted out,
• 16:44
Speaker 1: my dear, I really must get a thinner pencil. I
• 16:48
Speaker 1: can't manage this one a bit. It writes all manner
• 16:52
Speaker 1: of things that I don't intend. What manner of things,
• 16:57
Speaker 1: said the queen, looking over the book in which Alice
• 17:00
Speaker 1: had put. The White Knight is sliding down the poker.
• 17:05
Speaker 1: He balances very badly. That's not a memorandum of your feelings.
• 17:12
Speaker 1: There was a book lying near Alice on the table,
• 17:15
Speaker 1: And while she sat watching the White Knight, for she
• 17:19
Speaker 1: was still a little anxious about him, and had the
• 17:21
Speaker 1: ink all ready to throw over him, just in case
• 17:24
Speaker 1: he fainted again, she turned over the leaves to find
• 17:28
Speaker 1: some part that she could read. For it's all in
• 17:31
Speaker 1: some language I don't know, she said to herself. It
• 17:35
Speaker 1: was like this note here follows the first verse of
• 17:40
Speaker 1: the poem Jabberwockie, but backwards. She struggled over this for
• 17:46
Speaker 1: some time, but at last a bright thought struck her.
• 17:51
Speaker 1: Why it's a looking glass book, of course, and if
• 17:54
Speaker 1: I hold it up to a glass, the words will
• 17:57
Speaker 1: all go the right way again. This was the poem
• 18:01
Speaker 1: that Alice read. Jabbawockee twas brilliant, and the slyy toves,
• 18:08
Speaker 1: deguire and gimbal in the wave. All mimsy were the
• 18:12
Speaker 1: borough goves and the moon wrath's outgrabe.
• 18:17
Speaker 3: Beware the jabbawak, my son, the jars that bite, the
• 18:22
Speaker 3: class that catch, Beware the jab jab bird, and shannder
• 18:27
Speaker 3: fromies bander snatch. He took his vorpal sword in hand.
• 18:34
Speaker 3: Long time the maxim foe he sought, So rested he
• 18:38
Speaker 3: by the tumtum tree, and stood awhile in thought, and
• 18:43
Speaker 3: as in uffish thought he stood. The jabbawock, with eyes
• 18:46
Speaker 3: of flame, came wilfering through the tungy wood, and burbled
• 18:51
Speaker 3: as it came, one two, one two, and through and
• 18:55
Speaker 3: through the vorple blade went snicker snack. He left it dead,
• 19:01
Speaker 3: and with its head he went gallumphing back, and hast
• 19:07
Speaker 3: thou slain the Jabawak. Harm to my arm is my
• 19:11
Speaker 3: beamesh by oh fraB yes day callo clay.
• 19:16
Speaker 1: He chortled in his joy, twas brillig and the slythy
• 19:23
Speaker 1: toes did guire and gimble in the wave. All mimsy
• 19:27
Speaker 1: were the boragoes and the mom wraths out grabe. It
• 19:32
Speaker 1: seems very pretty, she said when she had finished it.
• 19:36
Speaker 1: But it is rather hard to understand, you see. She
• 19:40
Speaker 1: didn't like to confess ever to herself that she couldn't
• 19:44
Speaker 1: make it out at all. Sometimes it seems to fill
• 19:48
Speaker 1: my head with ideas, only I don't exactly know what
• 19:52
Speaker 1: they are. However, somebody killed something that's clear at any rate.
• 19:58
Speaker 1: But oh, thought Alice, suddenly, jumping up. If I don't
• 20:02
Speaker 1: make haste, I shall have to go back through the
• 20:05
Speaker 1: looking glass before I've seen what the rest of the
• 20:07
Speaker 1: house is like. Let's have a look at the garden first.
• 20:11
Speaker 1: She was out of the room in a moment and
• 20:14
Speaker 1: ran downstairs, or at least it wasn't exactly running, but
• 20:18
Speaker 1: a new invention of hers for getting downstairs quickly and easily.
• 20:21
Speaker 1: As Alice said to herself, she just kept the tips
• 20:25
Speaker 1: of her fingers on the handrail and floated gently down,
• 20:29
Speaker 1: without even touching the stairs with her feet. Then she
• 20:32
Speaker 1: floated on through the hall and would have gone straight
• 20:36
Speaker 1: out the door in the same way if she hadn't
• 20:39
Speaker 1: caught hold of the door post. She was getting a
• 20:42
Speaker 1: little giddy with so much floating in the air, and
• 20:45
Speaker 1: was rather glad to find herself walking again in the
• 20:49
Speaker 1: natural way and of Chapter one, Chapter two, The Garden
• 20:57
Speaker 1: of Live Flowers. I should see the garden far better,
• 21:04
Speaker 1: said Alice to herself, if I could get to the
• 21:07
Speaker 1: top of that hill. And here's a path that leads
• 21:10
Speaker 1: straight to it at least. No, it doesn't do that,
• 21:15
Speaker 1: after going a few yards along the path and turning
• 21:18
Speaker 1: several sharp corners. But I suppose it will at last.
• 21:22
Speaker 1: But how curiously it twists. It's more like a corkscrew
• 21:26
Speaker 1: than a path. Well, this turn goes to the hill,
• 21:30
Speaker 1: I suppose. No it doesn't, it goes straight back to
• 21:34
Speaker 1: the house. Well, then I'll try it the other way.
• 21:38
Speaker 1: And so she did, wandering up and down and trying
• 21:42
Speaker 1: turn after turn, but always coming back to the house
• 21:46
Speaker 1: do what she would. Indeed, once when she turned a
• 21:51
Speaker 1: corner rather more quickly than usual, she ran against it
• 21:54
Speaker 1: before she could stop herself. It's no good talking about it,
• 21:59
Speaker 1: Alice said, looking up at the house and pretending it
• 22:02
Speaker 1: was arguing with her. I'm not going in again. I
• 22:06
Speaker 1: know I should have to get through the looking glass again,
• 22:09
Speaker 1: back into the old room, and there'd be an end
• 22:11
Speaker 1: of all my adventures. So, resolutely turning her back upon
• 22:16
Speaker 1: the house, she set out once more down the path,
• 22:19
Speaker 1: determined to keep straight on until she got to the hill.
• 22:24
Speaker 1: For a few minutes all went well, and she was
• 22:27
Speaker 1: just saying, I really shall do it this time, when
• 22:31
Speaker 1: the path gave a sudden twist and shook itself, as
• 22:35
Speaker 1: she described it afterwards, and the next moment she found
• 22:39
Speaker 1: herself actually walking in at the door. Oh it's too bad,
• 22:45
Speaker 1: she cried. I never saw such a house for getting
• 22:48
  Speaker 1: in the way.
• 22:49
  Speaker 2: Never.
• 22:50
Speaker 1: However, there was the hill in full sight, so there
• 22:54
Speaker 1: was nothing to be done but start again. This time
• 22:57
Speaker 1: she came upon a large flower bed with a border
• 23:00
Speaker 1: of daisies and a willow tree growing in the middle. Oh,
• 23:05
Speaker 1: tiger lily, said Alice, addressing herself to one that was
• 23:08
Speaker 1: waving gracefully about in the wind. I wish you could talk.
• 23:13
Speaker 1: We can talk, said the tiger lily, when there's anybody
• 23:17
Speaker 1: worth talking to. Alice was so astonished that she couldn't
• 23:21
Speaker 1: speak for a minute. It quite seemed to take her
• 23:24
Speaker 1: breath away at length, as the tiger lily only went
• 23:28
Speaker 1: on waving about. She spoke again, in a timid voice,
• 23:31
Speaker 1: almost a whisper. And can all the flowers talk as
• 23:37
Speaker 1: well as you can? Said the tiger lily, and a
• 23:40
Speaker 1: great deal louder. It isn't manners for us to begin,
• 23:43
Speaker 1: you know, said the rose. And I really was wondering
• 23:47
Speaker 1: when you'd speak, said I to myself. Her face has
• 23:51
Speaker 1: got some sense in it, though it's not a clever one. Still,
• 23:55
Speaker 1: you are the right color, and that goes a long way.
• 23:59
Speaker 1: I don't care about color, the tiger lily remarked, If
• 24:03
Speaker 1: only her petals curled up a little more, she'd be
• 24:05
Speaker 1: all right. Alice didn't like being criticized, so she began
• 24:11
Speaker 1: asking questions. Aren't you sometimes frightened at being planted out
• 24:16
Speaker 1: here with no one to take care of you. There's
• 24:19
Speaker 1: the tree in the middle, said the rose. What else
• 24:22
Speaker 1: is it good for? But what could it do if
• 24:25
Speaker 1: any danger came? Alice asked?
• 24:28
  Speaker 2: It says?
• 24:30
Speaker 1: Bow? Wow, cried a daisy. That's why its branches are
• 24:34
Speaker 1: called bows. Didn't you know that? Cried another daisy? And
• 24:40
Speaker 1: here they all began shouting together until the air seemed
• 24:45
Speaker 1: quite full of little shrill voices.
• 24:48
Speaker 2: Silence, every one of.
• 24:50
Speaker 1: You, cried the tiger lily, waving itself passionately from side
• 24:54
Speaker 1: to side and trembling with excitement. They know I can't
• 24:59
Speaker 1: get at them, it panted, bending its quivering head towards Alice.
• 25:03
Speaker 1: Or they wouldn't dare to do it. Never mind, Alice said,
• 25:08
Speaker 1: in a soothing voice, and stooping down to the daisies,
• 25:11
Speaker 1: who were just beginning again, she whispered, if you don't
• 25:15
Speaker 1: hold your tongues, I'll pick you. There was silence in
• 25:19
Speaker 1: a moment, and several of the pink daisies turned white.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: That's right, said the tiger lily. Dazies are worst of all.
• 25:27
Speaker 1: When one speaks, they all begin together, and it's enough
• 25:31
Speaker 1: to make one whither to hear the way they go on.
• 25:34
Speaker 1: How is it you can all talk so nicely, Alice said,
• 25:39
Speaker 1: hoping to get it into a better temper by a compliment.
• 25:42
Speaker 1: I've been in many gardens before, but none of the
• 25:46
Speaker 1: flowers could talk. Put your hand down and feel the ground,
• 25:51
Speaker 1: said the tiger lily. Then you'll know why Alice did so.
• 25:56
Speaker 1: It's very hard, she said. But I don't see what
• 25:59
Speaker 1: that has to do with it. In most gardens, the
• 26:03
Speaker 1: tiger lily said, they make the beds too soft, so
• 26:07
Speaker 1: that the flowers are always asleep. This sounded like a
• 26:11
Speaker 1: very good reason, and Alice was quite pleased. To know it.
• 26:16
Speaker 1: I never thought of that before, she said. It's my
• 26:20
Speaker 1: opinion that you never think at all. The Rose said,
• 26:24
Speaker 1: in a rather severe tone, I never saw anybody that
• 26:29
Speaker 1: looks stupider A violet said, so suddenly that Alice quite jumped,
• 26:34
Speaker 1: for it hadn't spoken before. Hold your tongue, cried the
• 26:40
Speaker 1: tiger Lily, as if you ever saw anybody, you keep
• 26:44
Speaker 1: your head under the leaves and snore away there till
• 26:48
Speaker 1: you know no more what's going on in the world
• 26:52
Speaker 1: than if you were a bud. And are there any
• 26:55
Speaker 1: more people in the garden besides me? Alice said, not
• 26:59
Speaker 1: choosing to notice the Rose's last remark. There's one other
• 27:04
Speaker 1: flower in the garden that can move about like you,
• 27:07
Speaker 1: said the rose. I wonder how you do it. You're
• 27:12
Speaker 1: always wondering, said the tiger Lily. But she's more bushy
• 27:16
  Speaker 1: than you are.
• 27:18
Speaker 2: Is she like me?
• 27:20
Speaker 1: Alice asked eagerly, for the thought crossed her mind. There's
• 27:23
Speaker 1: another little girl in the garden somewhere. Well. She has
• 27:28
Speaker 1: the same awkward shape as you, the Rose said, but
• 27:32
Speaker 1: she's redder, and her petals are shorter. I think her
• 27:36
Speaker 1: petals are done up close, almost like a Dahlia, the
• 27:40
Speaker 1: tiger Lily interrupted, not tumbled about anyhow like yours. But
• 27:46
Speaker 1: it's not your fault, the rose added kindly. You're beginning
• 27:50
Speaker 1: to fade, you know, and then one can't help one's
• 27:53
Speaker 1: petals getting a little untidy. Alice didn't like this idea
• 27:58
Speaker 1: at all, so to change the subject, she ask does
• 28:01
Speaker 1: she ever come out here? I dare say you'll see
• 28:04
Speaker 1: her soon, said the rose. She's one of the thorny kind.
• 28:10
Speaker 1: Where does she wear the thorns? Alice asked, with some curiosity,
• 28:16
Speaker 1: why all around her head? Of course, the Rose replied.
• 28:19
Speaker 1: I was wondering you hadn't got some too. I thought
• 28:23
Speaker 1: it was the regular rule. She's coming, cried the larkspur.
• 28:29
  Speaker 2: I hear her.
• 28:30
Speaker 1: Footsteps, dump dump dump along the gravel walk. Alice looked
• 28:34
Speaker 1: round eagerly and found that it was the Red Queen.
• 28:39
Speaker 1: She's grown a good deal, was her first remark.
• 28:43
  Speaker 2: She had.
• 28:43
Speaker 1: Indeed, when Alice first found her in the ashes, she
• 28:47
Speaker 1: had been only three inches high, and here she was
• 28:51
Speaker 1: half a head taller than Alice herself. It's the fresh air,
• 28:55
Speaker 1: does it, said the rose? Wonderfully fine air it is
• 28:59
Speaker 1: out here. I think I'll go and meet her, said Alice,
• 29:03
Speaker 1: for though the flowers were interesting enough, she felt it
• 29:07
Speaker 1: would be far grander to have a talk with a
• 29:09
Speaker 1: real queen. You can't possibly do that, said the rose.
• 29:14
Speaker 1: I should advise you to walk the other way. This
• 29:18
Speaker 1: sounded nonsense to Alice, so she said nothing, but set
• 29:22
Speaker 1: off at once towards the Red Queen. To her surprise,
• 29:26
Speaker 1: she lost sight of her in a moment, and found
• 29:28
Speaker 1: herself walking in at the front door again. A little provoked,
• 29:33
Speaker 1: she drew back, and, after looking everywhere for the Queen,
• 29:36
Speaker 1: whom she spied at last a long way off, she
• 29:40
Speaker 1: thought she would try the plan, this time of walking
• 29:44
Speaker 1: in the opposite direction. It succeeded beautifully. She had not
• 29:49
Speaker 1: been walking a minute before she found herself face to
• 29:52
Speaker 1: face with the Red Queen and full in sight of
• 29:55
Speaker 1: the hill she had been so long aiming at. Well
• 29:59
Speaker 1: do you come from, said the Red Queen, and.
• 30:03
Speaker 2: Where are you going? Look up?
• 30:06
Speaker 1: Speak nicely, and don't twiddle your fingers all the time.
• 30:11
Speaker 1: Alice attended to all these directions, and explained as well
• 30:15
Speaker 1: as she could that she had lost away. I don't
• 30:20
Speaker 1: know what you mean by your way, said the queen.
• 30:25
Speaker 1: All the ways about here belonged to me. But why
• 30:30
Speaker 1: did you come out here at all? She added, in
• 30:33
Speaker 1: a kinder tone, curtsy while you're thinking what to say,
• 30:38
Speaker 1: it saves time. Alice wondered a bit at this, but
• 30:42
Speaker 1: she was too much in awe of the queen to
• 30:44
Speaker 1: disbelieve it. I'll try it when I go home, she
• 30:47
Speaker 1: thought to herself, the next time I'm a little late
• 30:49
Speaker 1: for dinner. It's time for you to answer now, the
• 30:54
Speaker 1: queen said, looking at her. Watch open your mouth a
• 30:58
Speaker 1: little wider when you speak, and all would say, your majesty,
• 31:05
Speaker 1: I only wanted to see what the garden was like,
• 31:08
Speaker 1: your majesty. That's right, said the Queen, patting her on
• 31:13
Speaker 1: the head, which Alice didn't like at all. Though when
• 31:18
Speaker 1: you say garden, I've seen gardens compared with which this
• 31:24
Speaker 1: would be a wilderness, Sir. Alice didn't dare argue the point,
• 31:28
Speaker 1: but went on, And I thought i'd try and find
• 31:32
Speaker 1: my way to the top of that hill. When you
• 31:35
Speaker 1: say hill, the queen interrupted, I could show you hills
• 31:42
Speaker 1: in comparison with which you'd call that a valley. Ah No,
• 31:49
Speaker 1: I shouldn't, said Alice, surprised into contradicting her. At last,
• 31:54
Speaker 1: a hill can't be of value, you know, that would
• 31:56
Speaker 1: be nonsense. The red queen shook her head. You may
• 32:02
Speaker 1: call it nonsense if you like her, she said, But
• 32:07
Speaker 1: I've heard nonsense compared with which that would be as
• 32:11
Speaker 1: sensible as a dictionary. Alice curtsied again, but she was
• 32:16
Speaker 1: afraid from the Queen's tone that she was a little offended.
• 32:21
Speaker 1: And they walked on in silence till they got to
• 32:23
Speaker 1: the top of the little hill. For some minutes, Alice
• 32:26
Speaker 1: stood without speaking, looking out in all directions over the country.
• 32:31
Speaker 1: And a most curious country it was. There were a
• 32:35
Speaker 1: number of tiny little brooks running straight across it from
• 32:39
Speaker 1: side to side, and the ground between was divided up
• 32:42
Speaker 1: into squares by a number of little green hedges that
• 32:46
Speaker 1: reached from brook to brook. I declare it's marked out
• 32:50
Speaker 1: just like a large chessboard, Alice said. At last. There
• 32:54
Speaker 1: ought to be some men moving about somewhere, and so
• 32:58
Speaker 1: there are, she added in a tone of delight, and
• 33:01
Speaker 1: her heart began to beat quick with excitement as she
• 33:04
Speaker 1: went on, it's a great, huge game of chess that's
• 33:08
Speaker 1: being played all over the world. If this is the
• 33:12
Speaker 1: world at all, you know, oh what fun it is
• 33:16
  Speaker 1: how I wish I was one of them. I wouldn't
• 33:19
Speaker 1: mind being a pawn if only I might join, though
• 33:22
Speaker 1: of course I should like to be a queen best.
• 33:25
Speaker 1: She glanced rather shyly at the real queen as she
• 33:28
Speaker 1: said this, but her companion only smiled pleasantly and said,
• 33:32
Speaker 1: that's easily managed. You can be the white Queen's pawn
• 33:37
Speaker 1: if you like, as Lily's too young to play, and
• 33:41
Speaker 1: you're in the second square to begin with. When you
• 33:45
Speaker 1: get to the eighth square, you'll be a queen. Just
• 33:49
Speaker 1: at this moment, somehow or other, they began to run.
• 33:54
Speaker 1: Alice never could quite make it out in thinking it
• 33:57
Speaker 1: over afterwards, how it was that they began. All she
• 34:01
Speaker 1: remembers is that they were running hand in hand, and
• 34:05
Speaker 1: the queen went so fast that it was all she
• 34:07
Speaker 1: could do to keep up with her. And still the
• 34:11
Speaker 1: Queen kept crying faster, faster, but Alice felt she could
• 34:17
Speaker 1: not go faster, though she had not breath left to
• 34:20
Speaker 1: say so. The most curious part of the thing was
• 34:24
Speaker 1: that the trees and the other things around them never
• 34:28
Speaker 1: changed their places at all. However fast they went, they
• 34:32
Speaker 1: never seemed to pass anything. I wonder if all the
• 34:35
Speaker 1: things move along with us, thought, poor puzzled Alice, and
• 34:40
Speaker 1: the Queen seemed to guess her thoughts, for she cried, faster,
• 34:45
Speaker 1: don't try to talk, not that Alice had any idea
• 34:49
Speaker 1: of doing that. She felt as if she would never
• 34:52
Speaker 1: be able to talk again. She was getting so much
• 34:55
Speaker 1: out of breath, and still the queen cried fast, of
• 35:00
Speaker 1: fast all, and dragged her along, Are we nearly there?
• 35:05
Speaker 1: Alice managed to pant out at last, nearly there? The
• 35:10
Speaker 1: queen repeated, why we passed it ten minutes ago?
• 35:14
  Speaker 2: Faster?
• 35:16
Speaker 1: And they ran on for a time in silence, with
• 35:19
Speaker 1: the wind whistling in Alice's ears and almost blowing her
• 35:23
Speaker 1: hair off her head. She fancied, no, no, cried the queen. Faster, faster,
• 35:32
Speaker 1: and they went so fast that at last they seemed
• 35:35
Speaker 1: to skim through the air, hardly touching the ground with
• 35:38
Speaker 1: their feet, till suddenly, just as Alice was getting quite exhausted,
• 35:43
Speaker 1: they stopped, and she found herself sitting on the ground,
• 35:47
Speaker 1: breathless and giddy. The queen propped her up against a
• 35:51
Speaker 1: tree and said, kindly, you may rest a little now.
• 35:55
Speaker 1: Alice looked round her in great surprise. Why I do
• 35:59
Speaker 1: believe we've been under this tree the whole time. Everything's
• 36:04
Speaker 1: just as it was.
• 36:05
  Speaker 2: Of course it.
• 36:06
Speaker 1: Is, uh, said the Queen. What would you have it
• 36:11
Speaker 1: well in our country, said Alice, still panting a little.
• 36:15
Speaker 1: You generally get somewhere else if you ran very fast
• 36:19
Speaker 1: for a long time, as we've been doing a slow
• 36:23
Speaker 1: sort of country, said the Queen. Now Here, you'll see
• 36:27
Speaker 1: it takes all the running you can do to keep
• 36:31
Speaker 1: in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else,
• 36:35
Speaker 1: you must run at least twice as fast as that.
• 36:38
Speaker 1: I'd rather not try, please, said Alice. I'm quite content
• 36:42
Speaker 1: to stay here, only I am so hot and thirsty.
• 36:47
Speaker 1: I know what you would like, the Queen said, good naturedly,
• 36:52
Speaker 1: taking a little box out of her pocket.
• 36:54
  Speaker 2: Have a biscuit.
• 36:56
Speaker 1: Alice thought it would not be civil to say no,
• 36:59
Speaker 1: though it wasn't at all what she wanted, so she
• 37:02
Speaker 1: took it and ate it as well as she could,
• 37:06
Speaker 1: and it was very dry, and she thought she had
• 37:08
Speaker 1: never been so nearly choked in all her life. While
• 37:12
Speaker 1: you're refreshing yourself, said the Queen, I'll just take the measurements,
• 37:19
Speaker 1: and she took a ribbon out of her pocket marked
• 37:22
Speaker 1: in inches, and began measuring the ground and sticking little
• 37:26
Speaker 1: pegs in here and there. At the end of two yards, uh,
• 37:31
Speaker 1: she said, putting in a peg to mark the distance,
• 37:35
Speaker 1: I shall give you your directions. Have another biscuit. Uh, no,
• 37:39
Speaker 1: thank you, said Alice. One's quite enough first quenched, I hope,
• 37:46
Speaker 1: said the queen. Alice did not know what to say
• 37:49
Speaker 1: to this, but luckily the Queen did not wait for
• 37:52
Speaker 1: an answer, but went on. At the end of three yards,
• 37:56
Speaker 1: I shall repeat them, for fear of your forgetting them.
• 38:00
Speaker 1: At the end of four I shall say good bye,
• 38:04
Speaker 1: and that the end of five I shall go. She
• 38:08
Speaker 1: had got all the pegs put in by this time,
• 38:10
Speaker 1: and Alice looked on with great interest as she returned
• 38:14
Speaker 1: to the tree, and then began slowly walking down the road.
• 38:18
Speaker 1: At the two yard peg, she faced round and said,
• 38:22
Speaker 1: a pawn goes two squares in its first move. You know,
• 38:27
Speaker 1: so you'll go very quickly through the third square by railway,
• 38:32
Speaker 1: I should think, and then you'll find yourself in the
• 38:36
Speaker 1: fourth square in no time. Well, that square belongs to
• 38:42
Speaker 1: tweedle dum and tweedledee. The fifth is mostly water. The
• 38:48
Speaker 1: sixth belongs to Humpty dumpty.
• 38:52
Speaker 2: But you make no remark.
• 38:54
Speaker 1: I didn't know I had to make one. Just then,
• 38:57
  Speaker 1: Alice faltered out.
• 38:59
Speaker 2: You should I have said.
• 39:01
Speaker 1: It's extremely kind of you to tell me all this. However,
• 39:06
Speaker 1: we all suppose it, said, Ah, the seventh square is
• 39:10
Speaker 1: all forest. However, one of the nights will show you
• 39:13
Speaker 1: the way, and in the eighth square we shall be
• 39:17
Speaker 1: Queen's together, and it's all feasting and fun. Alice got
• 39:23
Speaker 1: up and curtsied and sat down again. At the next peg,
• 39:27
Speaker 1: the Queen turned again, and this time she said, speak
• 39:31
Speaker 1: in French when you can't think of the English for
• 39:34
Speaker 1: a thing. Turn out your toes as you walk, and
• 39:37
Speaker 1: remember who you are. She did not wait for Alice
• 39:42
Speaker 1: to curtsey this time, but walked on quickly to the
• 39:45
Speaker 1: next peg, where she turned for a moment to say goodbye,
• 39:50
Speaker 1: and then hurried on to the last. How it happened,
• 39:53
Speaker 1: Alice never knew, but exactly as she came to the
• 39:56
Speaker 1: last peg, she was gone. Whether she vanished into the
• 40:00
Speaker 1: air or whether she ran quickly into the wood. And
• 40:04
Speaker 1: she can run very fast, thought Alice. There was no
• 40:09
Speaker 1: way of guessing, but she was gone, and Alice began
• 40:13
Speaker 1: to remember that she was a pawn and that it
• 40:16
Speaker 1: would soon be time for her to move end of
• 40:21
Speaker 1: Chapter two, Chapter three, Looking Glass Insects. Of course, the
• 40:28
Speaker 1: first thing to do was to make a grand survey
• 40:31
Speaker 1: of the country she was going to travel through. It's
• 40:34
Speaker 1: something very like learning geography, thought Alice, as she stood
• 40:38
Speaker 1: on tiptoe in hopes of being able to see a
• 40:41
Speaker 1: little further. Principal rivers. There are none principal mountains. I'm
• 40:49
Speaker 1: on the only one, but I don't think it's got
• 40:52
Speaker 1: any name, principal towns. Why what are those creatures making
• 40:58
Speaker 1: honey down there? They can't bees? Nobody ever saw bees
• 41:02
Speaker 1: a mile off, you know. And for some time she
• 41:05
Speaker 1: stood silent watching one of them that was bustling about
• 41:09
Speaker 1: among the flowers, poking its proboscis into them, just as
• 41:13
Speaker 1: if it was a regular bee, thought Alice. However, this
• 41:18
Speaker 1: was anything but a regular bee. In fact, it was
• 41:21
Speaker 1: an elephant, as Alice soon found out, though the idea
• 41:25
Speaker 1: quite took her breath away at first. What enormous flowers
• 41:30
Speaker 1: they must be? Was her next idea, Something like cottages
• 41:34
Speaker 1: with the roofs taken off and stalks put to them.
• 41:38
Speaker 1: And what quantities of honey they must make. I think
• 41:41
Speaker 1: I'll go down, And no I won't just yet. She
• 41:46
Speaker 1: went on, checking herself, just as she was beginning to
• 41:49
Speaker 1: run down the hill and trying to find some excuse
• 41:52
Speaker 1: for turning shy. So suddenly it'll never do to go
• 41:56
Speaker 1: down among them without a good long brunch to brush
• 41:59
Speaker 1: them away. And what fun it'll be when they ask
• 42:03
Speaker 1: me how I like my walk, I shall say, oh,
• 42:06
Speaker 1: I like it well enough. Here came the favorite little
• 42:10
Speaker 1: toss of the head, only it was so dusty and hot,
• 42:14
Speaker 1: and the elephants did tease. So I think I'll go
• 42:17
Speaker 1: down the other way, she said, after a pause, And
• 42:21
Speaker 1: perhaps I may visit the elephants later. Besides, I do
• 42:25
Speaker 1: so want to get into the third square. So with
• 42:29
Speaker 1: this excuse, she ran down the hill and jumped over
• 42:32
Speaker 1: the first of the six little brooks. Tickets, please, said
• 42:38
Speaker 1: the guard, putting his head in at the window. In
• 42:41
Speaker 1: a moment, everybody was holding out a ticket. They were
• 42:44
Speaker 1: about the same size as the people and quite seemed
• 42:47
Speaker 1: to fill the carriage. Now, then show you a ticket, child.
• 42:52
Speaker 1: The guard went on, looking angrily at Alice, and a
• 42:56
Speaker 1: great many voices all said together like the chorus of
• 43:00
Speaker 1: a song, thought Alice.
• 43:03
  Speaker 2: Don't keep him.
• 43:03
Speaker 1: Waiting, child, Why his time is worth a thousand pounds
• 43:07
  Speaker 1: a minute. I'm afraid I haven't got one, Alice said,
• 43:10
Speaker 1: in a frightened tone. There wasn't a ticket office where
• 43:14
Speaker 1: I came from. And again the chorus of voices went on.
• 43:19
Speaker 1: There wasn't room for one where she came from the land.
• 43:23
Speaker 1: There is worth a thousand pounds an inch. Don't make excuses,
• 43:28
Speaker 1: said the guard. You should have bought one from the
• 43:31
Speaker 1: engine driver. And once more the chorus of voices went on.
• 43:36
Speaker 1: The man that drives the engine, why the smoke alon
• 43:39
Speaker 1: is worth a thousand pounds a puff, Alice thought to herself.
• 43:45
Speaker 1: Then there's no use in speaking. The voices didn't join
• 43:49
Speaker 1: in this time, as though she hadn't spoken, But to
• 43:52
Speaker 1: her great surprise, they all thought in chorus. I hope
• 43:56
Speaker 1: you understand what thinking in chorus means, for I must
• 44:00
Speaker 1: fess that I don't better to say nothing at all.
• 44:03
Speaker 1: Language is worth a thousand pounds a word. I shall
• 44:07
Speaker 1: dream about a thousand pounds to night, I know I shall,
• 44:10
Speaker 1: thought Alice. All this time the guard was looking at her,
• 44:14
Speaker 1: first through a telescope then through a microscope, then through
• 44:18
Speaker 1: an opera glass. At last he said, you travel in
• 44:22
Speaker 1: the wrong way, and shut up the window and went away.
• 44:27
Speaker 1: So young a child, said the gentleman sitting opposite to her,
• 44:33
Speaker 1: He was dressed in a white paper, ought to know
• 44:36
Speaker 1: which way she's going, even if she doesn't know her
• 44:40
Speaker 1: own name. A goat that was sitting next to the
• 44:45
Speaker 1: gentleman in white shut his eyes and said, in a
• 44:49
Speaker 1: loud voice, she ought to know her way to the
• 44:52
Speaker 1: ticket office, even if she doesn't know her alphabet. There
• 44:57
Speaker 1: was a beetle sitting next to the goat. It was
• 45:00
Speaker 1: a very queer carriage full of passengers altogether, and as
• 45:05
Speaker 1: the rule seemed to be that they should all speak
• 45:07
Speaker 1: in turn, he went on with.
• 45:10
Speaker 2: She'll have to go back from here his luggage.
• 45:13
Speaker 1: Alice couldn't see who was sitting beyond the beetle, but
• 45:16
Speaker 1: a hoarse voice spoke next change engines, it said, and
• 45:22
Speaker 1: was obliged to leave off. It sounds like a horse,
• 45:27
Speaker 1: Alice thought to herself, and an extremely small voice close
• 45:32
Speaker 1: to her ear said, you might make a joke on that,
• 45:36
Speaker 1: something about horse and horse, you know. Then a very
• 45:41
Speaker 1: gentle voice in the distance said she must be labeled
• 45:45
Speaker 1: las with care, you know. And after that other voices
• 45:50
Speaker 1: went on, what a number of people there are in
• 45:54
Speaker 1: the carriage, thought Alice, saying she must go by post,
• 45:59
Speaker 1: as she's got a head in her She must be
• 46:02
Speaker 1: sent as a message by the telegraph, She must draw
• 46:06
Speaker 1: the train herself the rest of the way, and so on.
• 46:11
Speaker 1: But the gentleman dressed in white paper, leaned forwards and
• 46:15
Speaker 1: whispered in her ear. Never mind what they all say,
• 46:19
Speaker 1: my dear, but take a return ticket every time the
• 46:23
Speaker 1: train stops. Indeed, I shan't, Alice said, rather impatiently. I
• 46:30
Speaker 1: don't belong to this railway journey at all. I was
• 46:33
Speaker 1: in a wood jest now, and I wish I could
• 46:35
  Speaker 1: get back there.
• 46:37
Speaker 2: You might make a joke on.
• 46:39
Speaker 1: That, said the little voice close to her ear, Something
• 46:43
Speaker 1: about you would if you could, you know, don't tease,
• 46:50
Speaker 1: so said Alice, looking about in vain to see where
• 46:53
Speaker 1: the voice came from. If you're so anxious to have
• 46:56
Speaker 1: a joke made, why don't you make one yourself. The
• 47:00
Speaker 1: little voice sighed deeply. It was very unhappy, evidently, and
• 47:06
Speaker 1: Alice would have said something pitying to comfort it, if
• 47:09
Speaker 1: it would only sigh like other people, she thought, But
• 47:14
Speaker 1: this was such a wonderfully small sigh that she wouldn't
• 47:18
Speaker 1: have heard it at all if it hadn't come quite
• 47:21
Speaker 1: close to her ear. The consequence of this was that
• 47:26
Speaker 1: it tickled her ear very much, and quite took off
• 47:29
Speaker 1: her thoughts from the unhappiness of the poor little creature.
• 47:34
Speaker 1: I know you are a friend, the little voice went on,
• 47:39
Speaker 1: a dear friend, an old friend, and that you won't
• 47:43
Speaker 1: hurt me though I am an insect. What kind of insect?
• 47:49
Speaker 1: Alice inquired a little anxiously. What she really wanted to
• 47:54
Speaker 1: know was whether it could sting or not, but she
• 47:57
Speaker 1: thought this wouldn't be quite a civil question to ask,
• 48:01
Speaker 1: what then, you don't the little voice began when it
• 48:05
Speaker 1: was drowned by a shrill scream from the engine, and
• 48:09
Speaker 1: everybody jumped up in alarm, Alice among the rest. The horse,
• 48:13
Speaker 1: who had put his head out of the window quietly
• 48:16
Speaker 1: drew it in and said.
• 48:18
Speaker 2: It's only a brook we have to jump over.
• 48:23
Speaker 1: Everybody seemed satisfied with this, though Alice felt a little
• 48:27
Speaker 1: nervous at the idea of trains jumping at all. However,
• 48:32
Speaker 1: it'll take us into the fourth square that's some comfort,
• 48:36
Speaker 1: she said to herself. In another moment, she felt the
• 48:40
Speaker 1: carriage rise straight up into the air, and in her fright,
• 48:44
Speaker 1: she caught at the thing nearest to her hand, which
• 48:48
Speaker 1: happened to be the goat's beard. But the beard seemed
• 48:51
Speaker 1: to melt away as she touched it, and she found
• 48:54
Speaker 1: herself sitting quietly under a tree while the gnat, for
• 48:59
Speaker 1: that was the insects she had been talking to, was
• 49:02
Speaker 1: balancing itself on a twig just over her head and
• 49:06
Speaker 1: fanning her with its wings. It was a very large gnat,
• 49:11
Speaker 1: about the size of a chicken, Alice thought, still she
• 49:15
Speaker 1: couldn't feel nervous with it, after they had been talking
• 49:18
Speaker 1: together so long. Then you don't like all insects, the
• 49:23
Speaker 1: gnat went on, as quietly as if nothing had happened.
• 49:27
Speaker 1: I like them when they can talk, Alice said. None
• 49:31
Speaker 1: of them ever talk where I come from. What sort
• 49:35
Speaker 1: of insects do you rejoice in where you'll come from?
• 49:39
Speaker 1: The gnat inquired. I don't rejoice in insects at all,
• 49:43
Speaker 1: Alice explained, because I'm rather afraid of them, at least
• 49:47
Speaker 1: the large kinds. But I can tell you the names
• 49:50
Speaker 1: of some of them. Of course they answer to their names,
• 49:55
Speaker 1: Nat remarked carelessly. I've never known them to do. What's
• 50:01
Speaker 1: the use of they're having names, the gnat said. If
• 50:05
Speaker 1: they won't answer to them, no use to them, said Alice.
• 50:10
Speaker 1: But it's useful to the people who name them, I suppose.
• 50:13
Speaker 1: If not, why do things have names at all? I
• 50:17
Speaker 1: can't say, the gnat replied. Further on in the wood
• 50:22
Speaker 1: down there, they've got no names. However, go on with
• 50:26
Speaker 1: your list of insects. You're wasting time. Well, there's the
• 50:31
Speaker 1: horse fly. Alice began counting off the names on her fingers.
• 50:37
Speaker 1: All right, said the gnat. Half Way up that bush,
• 50:41
Speaker 1: you'll see a rocking horse fly.
• 50:43
Speaker 2: If you look. It's made entirely of.
• 50:46
Speaker 1: Wood and gets about by swinging itself from branch to branch.
• 50:51
Speaker 1: What does it live on, Alice asked, with great curiosity.
• 50:56
Speaker 1: Sap and saw dust, said the gnat. Go on with
• 50:59
Speaker 1: the lip. Alice looked up at the rocking horse fly
• 51:04
Speaker 1: with great interest and made up her mind it must
• 51:07
Speaker 1: have been just repainted. It looked so bright and sticky.
• 51:11
Speaker 1: And then she went on, and there's the dragonfly. Look
• 51:16
Speaker 1: up on the branch above your head, said the gnat,
• 51:20
Speaker 1: And there you'll find a snap dragonfly. Its body is
• 51:24
Speaker 1: made of plum pudding, its wings of holly leaves, and
• 51:29
Speaker 1: its head is a raisin burning in brandy. And what
• 51:33
Speaker 1: does it live on? Frum and tea and mince pie,
• 51:38
Speaker 1: the nat replied. And it makes its nest in a
• 51:41
Speaker 1: Christmas box. And then there's the butterfly. Alice went on,
• 51:46
Speaker 1: after she had taken a good look at the insect
• 51:49
Speaker 1: with its head on fire, and had thought to herself,
• 51:52
Speaker 1: I wonder if that's the reason the insects are so
• 51:55
Speaker 1: fond of flying into candles, because they want to turn
• 51:59
Speaker 1: into snap dragonflies. Crawling at your feet, said the gnat.
• 52:05
Speaker 1: Alice drew her feet back in some alarm. You may
• 52:09
Speaker 1: observe a bread and butterfly. Its wings are thin slices
• 52:14
Speaker 1: of bread and butter. Its body is a crust, and
• 52:17
Speaker 1: its head is a lump of sugar. What does it
• 52:21
Speaker 1: live on? Weak tea with cream in it? A new
• 52:25
Speaker 1: difficulty came into Alice's head. Supposing it can't find any
• 52:31
Speaker 1: she suggested, then it would die, of course, But that
• 52:36
Speaker 1: must happen very often, Alice remarked, thoughtfully. It always happens,
• 52:42
Speaker 1: said the gnat. After this, Alice was silent for a
• 52:47
Speaker 1: minute or two, pondering. The gnat amused itself meanwhile by
• 52:52
Speaker 1: humming round and round her head. At last, it settled
• 52:55
Speaker 1: again and remarked, I suppose you don't want to lose
• 52:59
Speaker 1: your name. No, indeed, Alice said a little anxiously, And
• 53:05
Speaker 1: yet I don't know. The nat went on in a
• 53:09
Speaker 1: careless tone. Only think how convenient it would be if
• 53:13
Speaker 1: you could manage to go home without it. For instance,
• 53:16
Speaker 1: if the governess wanted to call you to your lessons,
• 53:20
Speaker 1: she would call out, come here and there. She would
• 53:23
Speaker 1: have to leave off because there wouldn't be any name
• 53:26
Speaker 1: for her to call, And of course you wouldn't have
• 53:29
Speaker 1: to go. You know that would never do, I'm sure,
• 53:33
Speaker 1: said Alice. The governess would never think of excusing me
• 53:37
Speaker 1: lessons for that. If she couldn't remember my name, she'd
• 53:41
Speaker 1: call me miss, as the servants do.
• 53:45
  Speaker 2: Well.
• 53:45
Speaker 1: If she said miss and didn't say anything more, the
• 53:49
Speaker 1: gnat remarked, of course you'd miss your lessons. That's a joke.
• 53:54
Speaker 1: I wish you had made it. Why do you wish
• 53:57
Speaker 1: I had made it? Alice asked, it's a very bad one.
• 54:01
Speaker 1: But the gnat only sighed deeply while two large tears
• 54:06
Speaker 1: came rolling down its cheeks. You shouldn't make jokes, Alice said,
• 54:11
Speaker 1: if it makes you so unhappy. Then came another of
• 54:15
Speaker 1: those melancholy little sighs, and this time the poor gnat
• 54:19
Speaker 1: really seemed to have sighed itself away, for when Alice
• 54:23
Speaker 1: looked up, there was nothing whatever to be seen on
• 54:26
Speaker 1: the twig, And as she was getting quite chilly with
• 54:29
Speaker 1: sitting still so long, she got up and walked on.
• 54:33
Speaker 1: She very soon came to an open field with a
• 54:36
Speaker 1: wood on the other side of it. It looked much
• 54:39
Speaker 1: darker than the last wood, and Alice felt a little
• 54:42
Speaker 1: timid about going into it. However, on second thoughts, she
• 54:47
Speaker 1: made up her mind to go on, for I certainly
• 54:50
Speaker 1: won't go back, she thought to herself, and this was
• 54:54
Speaker 1: the only way to the eighth square. This must be
• 54:58
Speaker 1: the wood, she said thoughtfully to herself. Where things have
• 55:02
Speaker 1: no names, I wonder what'll become of my name when
• 55:06
Speaker 1: I go in. I shouldn't like to lose it at all,
• 55:09
Speaker 1: because they'd have to give me another, and it would
• 55:12
Speaker 1: almost certain to be an ugly one. But then the
• 55:15
Speaker 1: fund would be trying to find the creature that had
• 55:17
Speaker 1: got my old name. That's just like the advertisements, you
• 55:22
Speaker 1: know when people lose dogs answers to the name of
• 55:26
Speaker 1: Dash had on a brass collar. Just fancy calling everything
• 55:32
Speaker 1: you met Alice until one of them answered. Only they
• 55:36
Speaker 1: wouldn't answer it all if they were wise. She was
• 55:39
Speaker 1: rambling on in this way. When she reached the wood,
• 55:43
Speaker 1: it looked very cool and shady. Well, at any rate,
• 55:47
Speaker 1: it's a great comfort, she said, as she stepped under
• 55:50
Speaker 1: the trees, after being so hot to get into the
• 55:54
Speaker 1: into what she went on, rather surprised at not being
• 55:58
Speaker 1: able to think of the word. I mean, to get
• 56:01
Speaker 1: under the under the under this, you know, putting her
• 56:07
Speaker 1: hand on the trunk of the tree. What does it
• 56:10
Speaker 1: call itself? I wonder? I do believe it's got no name?
• 56:13
Speaker 1: Why to be sure it hasn't? She stood silent for
• 56:17
Speaker 1: a minute thinking, Then suddenly she began again. Then it
• 56:23
Speaker 1: really has happened after all, And now who am I
• 56:27
Speaker 1: I will remember if I can. I am determined to
• 56:30
Speaker 1: do it. But being determined didn't help much, and all
• 56:35
Speaker 1: she could say, after a great deal of puzzling, was L.
• 56:39
Speaker 1: I know it begins with L. Just then a fawn
• 56:44
Speaker 1: came wandering by. It looked at Alice with its large,
• 56:48
Speaker 1: gentle eyes, but didn't seem at all frightened. Here then here, then,
• 56:53
Speaker 1: Alice said, as she held out her hand and tried
• 56:56
Speaker 1: to stroke it, but it only started back a little,
• 57:00
Speaker 1: and then stood looking at her again. What did you
• 57:03
Speaker 1: call yourself? The fawn said at last, such a soft,
• 57:08
Speaker 1: sweet voice it had. I wish I knew, thought, poor Alice,
• 57:13
Speaker 1: she answered, rather sadly. Nothing. Just now think again, it said.
• 57:20
Speaker 1: That won't do, Alice thought, but nothing came of it. Please,
• 57:26
Speaker 1: would you tell me what you call yourself? She said timidly.
• 57:31
Speaker 1: I think that might help a little. I'll tell you
• 57:36
Speaker 1: if you move a little further on. The fawn said,
• 57:40
Speaker 1: I can't remember here. So they walked on together through
• 57:44
Speaker 1: the wood, Alice with her arms clasped lovingly around the
• 57:48
Speaker 1: soft neck of the fawn, till they came out into
• 57:52
Speaker 1: another open field. And here the fawn gave a sudden
• 57:56
Speaker 1: bound into the air and shook itself free of Alice's eye.
• 58:01
Speaker 1: I'm a fawn, it cried out, in a voice of delight,
• 58:05
Speaker 1: and dear me, you're a human child. A sudden look
• 58:09
Speaker 1: of alarm came into its beautiful brown eyes, and in
• 58:12
Speaker 1: another moment it had darted away at full speed. Alice
• 58:17
Speaker 1: stood looking after it, almost ready to cry with vexation
• 58:21
Speaker 1: at having lost her dear little fellow traveler so suddenly. However,
• 58:27
Speaker 1: I know my name now, she said. That's some comfort, Alice, Alice,
• 58:33
Speaker 1: I won't forget it again. And now, which of these
• 58:37
Speaker 1: finger posts ought I to follow?
• 58:39
  Speaker 2: I wonder?
• 58:41
Speaker 1: It was not a very difficult question to answer, as
• 58:44
Speaker 1: there was only one road through the wood, and the
• 58:47
Speaker 1: two finger posts both pointed along it. I'll settle it,
• 58:52
Speaker 1: Alice said to herself, when the road divides and they
• 58:55
Speaker 1: point different ways. But this did not seem like to happen.
• 59:01
Speaker 1: She went on and on a long way, but whenever
• 59:04
Speaker 1: the road divided, there would be sure to be two
• 59:07
Speaker 1: finger posts pointing the same way, one marked to Tweedledum's
• 59:13
Speaker 1: house and the other to the house of tweedled I
• 59:18
Speaker 1: do believe, said Alice at last, that they live in
• 59:22
Speaker 1: the same house. I wonder. I never thought of that before.
• 59:26
Speaker 1: But I can't stay there long. I'll just call and
• 59:29
Speaker 1: say how d'ye do and ask them the way out
• 59:32
Speaker 1: of the wood. If I could only get to the
• 59:34
Speaker 1: eighth square before it gets dark. So she wandered on,
• 59:39
Speaker 1: talking to herself as she went till on turning a
• 59:42
Speaker 1: sharp corner, she came upon two fat little men so
• 59:46
Speaker 1: suddenly that she could not help starting back. But in
• 59:50
Speaker 1: another moment she recovered herself, feeling sure that they must
• 59:54
Speaker 1: be end of chapter three. Chapter three, Tweedledum and tweedled.
• 1:00:05
Speaker 1: They were standing under a tree, each with an arm
• 1:00:08
Speaker 1: around the other's neck, and Alice knew which was which
• 1:00:11
Speaker 1: in a moment, because one of them had dumb embroidered
• 1:00:16
Speaker 1: on his collar and the other d I suppose they've
• 1:00:19
Speaker 1: each got tweedle round at the back of the collar,
• 1:00:23
Speaker 1: she said to herself. They stood so still that she
• 1:00:28
Speaker 1: quite forgot they were alive, and she was just looking
• 1:00:31
Speaker 1: round to see if the word tweedle was written at
• 1:00:34
Speaker 1: the back of each collar, when she was startled by
• 1:00:37
Speaker 1: a voice coming from the one marked dumb. If you
• 1:00:41
Speaker 1: think we're waxworks, he said, you ought to pay, you know,
• 1:00:46
Speaker 1: waxworks worn't made to be looked at for nothing. No
• 1:00:49
Speaker 1: how contrari wise, added the one marked d If you
• 1:00:55
Speaker 1: think we're alive, you ought to speak. I'm sure, I'm
• 1:00:59
Speaker 1: very sorry, was all Alice could say, for the words
• 1:01:03
Speaker 1: of the old song kept ringing through her head like
• 1:01:07
Speaker 1: the ticking of a clock, and she could hardly help
• 1:01:10
Speaker 1: saying them out loud. Tweedledum and Tweedledee agreed to have
• 1:01:15
Speaker 1: a battle, for Tweedledum said, Tweedledee had spoiled his nice
• 1:01:20
Speaker 1: new rattle, just then flew down a monstrous crow, as
• 1:01:25
Speaker 1: black as a tar barrel, which frightened both the heroes,
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: so they quite forgot their quarrel. I know what you're
• 1:01:34
Speaker 1: thinking about, said Tweedledum.
• 1:01:37
Speaker 2: But it isn't so. Nohow contrari wise.
• 1:01:41
Speaker 1: Continued Tweedledee. If it was so, it might be, and
• 1:01:45
Speaker 1: if it were so, it would be. But as it isn't,
• 1:01:48
Speaker 1: it ain't. That's logic I was thinking, Alice said, very politely,
• 1:01:55
Speaker 1: which is the best way out of the wood? It's
• 1:01:58
Speaker 1: getting so dark? Didn't you tell me please? But the
• 1:02:02
Speaker 1: little man only looked at each other and grinned. They
• 1:02:05
Speaker 1: looked so exactly like a couple of great schoolboys that
• 1:02:09
Speaker 1: Alice couldn't help pointing her finger at Tweedledumb and saying,
• 1:02:14
Speaker 1: first boy, no, how Tweedledumb cried out briskly and shut
• 1:02:19
Speaker 1: his mouth up again with a snap. Next boy, said Alice,
• 1:02:23
Speaker 1: passing on to Tweedledee, though she felt quite certain that
• 1:02:27
Speaker 1: he would only shout out contrariwise, and so he did.
• 1:02:32
Speaker 1: You've been wrong, cried Tweedle dumb. The first thing in
• 1:02:36
Speaker 1: a visit is to say how'd you do? And shake hands?
• 1:02:40
Speaker 1: And here the two brothers gave each other a hug,
• 1:02:44
Speaker 1: and then they held out the two hands that were
• 1:02:46
Speaker 1: free to shake hands with her. Alice did not like
• 1:02:49
Speaker 1: shaking hands with either of them first, for fear of
• 1:02:52
Speaker 1: hurting the other one's feelings, so as the best way
• 1:02:56
Speaker 1: out of the difficulty, she took hold of both hands
• 1:02:59
Speaker 1: at once. The next moment, they were dancing round in
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: a ring. This seemed quite natural, she remembered afterwards, and
• 1:03:08
Speaker 1: she was not even surprised to hear music playing. It
• 1:03:11
Speaker 1: seemed to come from the tree under which they were dancing,
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: and it was done as well as she could make
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: it out, by the branches rubbing one across the other,
• 1:03:22
Speaker 1: like fiddles and fiddlesticks. But it certainly was funny, Alice
• 1:03:28
Speaker 1: said afterwards, when she was telling her sister the history
• 1:03:31
Speaker 1: of all this. To find myself singing here we go
• 1:03:34
Speaker 1: round the mulberry bush. I don't know when I began it,
• 1:03:38
Speaker 1: but somehow I felt as if I'd been singing it
• 1:03:41
Speaker 1: a long long time. The other two dancers were fat
• 1:03:47
Speaker 1: and very soon out of breath. Four times round is
• 1:03:51
Speaker 1: enough for one dance. Tweedledumb panted out, and they left
• 1:03:55
Speaker 1: off dancing as suddenly as they had begun. The music
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: stopped at the same moment. Then they let go of
• 1:04:02
Speaker 1: Alice's hands and stood looking at her for a minute.
• 1:04:05
Speaker 1: There was rather an awkward pause, as Alice didn't know
• 1:04:08
Speaker 1: how to begin a conversation with people she had just
• 1:04:11
Speaker 1: been dancing with. It would never do to say, how
• 1:04:15
Speaker 1: do you do now? She said to herself. We seem
• 1:04:18
Speaker 1: to have got beyond that somehow.
• 1:04:21
  Speaker 2: Um.
• 1:04:21
Speaker 1: I hope you're not much tired, she said, at last
• 1:04:25
Speaker 1: know how, and thank you very much for asking, said Tweedledum,
• 1:04:30
Speaker 1: so much obliged, added Tweedledee. You like poetry, yes, pretty much,
• 1:04:37
Speaker 1: some poetry, said Alice, doubtfully. Would you tell me which
• 1:04:42
Speaker 1: road leads out of the wood? What shall I repeat
• 1:04:45
Speaker 1: to her? Said Tweedledee, looking round at Tweedledum with great
• 1:04:49
Speaker 1: solemn eyes, and not noticing Alice's question, The walls of
• 1:04:54
Speaker 1: the carpenter is the longest, Tweedledum replied, giving his brother
• 1:04:58
Speaker 1: an affectionate hug. Tweedledee began instantly. The sun was shining here.
• 1:05:05
Speaker 1: Alice ventured to interrupt him. If it's very long, she said,
• 1:05:09
Speaker 1: as politely as she could, would you please tell me first,
• 1:05:13
Speaker 1: witch road. Tweedled Arm smiled gently and began again. The
• 1:05:18
Speaker 1: sun was shining on the sea, shining with all his might.
• 1:05:22
Speaker 1: He did his very best to make the billow smooth
• 1:05:25
Speaker 1: and bright. And this was odd because it was the
• 1:05:28
Speaker 1: middle of the night.
• 1:05:30
  Speaker 2: The moon was.
• 1:05:30
Speaker 1: Shining sulkily, because she thought the sun had got no
• 1:05:34
Speaker 1: business to be there after the day was done. It's
• 1:05:38
Speaker 1: very rude of him, she said, to come and spoil
• 1:05:40
Speaker 1: the fun. The sea was wet as wet could be.
• 1:05:44
Speaker 1: The sands were dry as dry. You could not see
• 1:05:47
Speaker 1: a cloud because no cloud was in the sky. No
• 1:05:50
Speaker 1: birds were flying overhead, there were no birds to fly.
• 1:05:55
Speaker 1: The walrus and the carpenter were walking close at hand.
• 1:05:59
Speaker 1: They wept like anything to see such quantities of sand.
• 1:06:03
Speaker 1: If this were only cleared away, they said, it would
• 1:06:07
Speaker 1: be grand if seven maids with seven mops swept it
• 1:06:12
Speaker 1: for half a year. Do you suppose the wallrous said
• 1:06:15
Speaker 1: that they could get it clear? I doubt it, said
• 1:06:19
Speaker 1: the carpenter, and shed a bitter tear. Oh, oysters, come
• 1:06:24
Speaker 1: and walk with us. The wall rested, beseech a pleasant walk,
• 1:06:29
Speaker 1: a pleasant talk along the briny beach. We cannot do
• 1:06:34
Speaker 1: with more than four, to give a hand to each.
• 1:06:38
Speaker 1: The eldest oyster looked at him, but never a word,
• 1:06:42
Speaker 1: he said. The eldest oyster winked his eye and shook
• 1:06:46
Speaker 1: his heavy head, meaning to say he did not choose
• 1:06:50
Speaker 1: to leave the oyster bed. But four young oysters hurried up,
• 1:06:54
Speaker 1: all eager for the treat. Their coats were brushed, their
• 1:06:58
Speaker 1: faces washed, their shoes clean and neat. And this was odd,
• 1:07:02
Speaker 1: because you know, they hadn't any feet. Four other oysters
• 1:07:06
Speaker 1: followed them, and yet another four, And thick and fast
• 1:07:10
Speaker 1: they came at last, and more and more and more,
• 1:07:13
Speaker 1: all hopping through the frothy waves and scrambling to the shore.
• 1:07:19
Speaker 1: The walrus and the carpenter walked on a mile or so,
• 1:07:22
Speaker 1: and then they rested on a rock conveniently low, and
• 1:07:26
Speaker 1: all that leysters stood and waited in a row. The
• 1:07:31
Speaker 1: time has come. The wall was said to talk of
• 1:07:34
Speaker 1: many things, of shoes and ships, and sealing wax, of
• 1:07:39
Speaker 1: cabbages and kings, and why the sea is boiling hot,
• 1:07:43
Speaker 1: and whether pigs have wings. But wait a bit, the
• 1:07:46
Speaker 1: oysters cried, before we have our chat, for some of
• 1:07:50
Speaker 1: us are out of breath, and all of us are fat. No, harry,
• 1:07:55
Speaker 1: said the carpenter. They thanked him much for that. A
• 1:07:58
Speaker 1: loaf of bread, the walrus said, is what we chiefly need.
• 1:08:03
Speaker 1: Pepper and vinegar besides, are very good. Indeed, now if
• 1:08:08
Speaker 1: you're ready, oysters, dear, we can begin to feed, But
• 1:08:13
Speaker 1: not on us. The oysters cried, turning a little blue.
• 1:08:18
Speaker 1: After such kindness, that would be a dismal thing to do.
• 1:08:23
Speaker 1: The night is fine, the walrus said, do you admire
• 1:08:27
Speaker 1: the you? It was so kind of you to come,
• 1:08:31
Speaker 1: and you are very nice. The carpenter said, nothing, but
• 1:08:37
Speaker 1: cut us another slice. I wish you were not quite
• 1:08:41
Speaker 1: so deaf. I've had to ask you twice. It seems
• 1:08:47
Speaker 1: a shame. The wallrus said, to play them such a trick,
• 1:08:51
Speaker 1: And after we'd brought them out so far and made
• 1:08:54
Speaker 1: them trot so quick. The carpenter said nothing. But the
• 1:08:59
Speaker 1: butter's spread too thick. I weep for you, the walrus said,
• 1:09:04
Speaker 1: I deeply sympathize with sobs and tears. He sorted out
• 1:09:10
Speaker 1: those of the largest size, holding his pocket handkerchief before
• 1:09:15
Speaker 1: his streaming eyes. Oh, oysters, said the carpenter, you've had
• 1:09:22
Speaker 1: a pleasant run. Shall we be trotting home again? But
• 1:09:27
Speaker 1: answer came there none, and that was scarcely odd, because
• 1:09:32
Speaker 1: they'd eaten everyone. I like the warri's best, said Alice,
• 1:09:37
Speaker 1: because you see he was a little sorry for the
• 1:09:39
Speaker 1: poor oysters. He ate more than the carpenter, though, said Tweedledee.
• 1:09:44
Speaker 1: You see he held his handkerchief in front so that
• 1:09:47
Speaker 1: the carpenter couldn't see how many he took. Contrariwise, that
• 1:09:52
Speaker 1: was mean, Alice said indignantly. Then I like the carpenter
• 1:09:57
Speaker 1: best if he didn't eat so many as the warrus.
• 1:10:00
Speaker 1: But he ate as many as he could get, said Tweedledumb.
• 1:10:04
Speaker 1: This was a puzzler. After a pause, Alice began, well,
• 1:10:09
Speaker 1: they were both very unpleasant characters here. She checked herself
• 1:10:14
Speaker 1: in some alarm and hearing something that sounded to her
• 1:10:17
Speaker 1: like the puffing of a large steam engine in the
• 1:10:20
Speaker 1: wood near them, Though she feared it was more likely
• 1:10:23
Speaker 1: to be a wild beast. Are there any lions or
• 1:10:27
Speaker 1: tigers about here? She asked timidly. It's only the red
• 1:10:32
Speaker 1: king snoring, said Tweedledean.
• 1:10:35
Speaker 2: Come and look at him.
• 1:10:37
Speaker 1: The brothers cried, and they each took one of Alice's
• 1:10:40
Speaker 1: hands and led her up to where the king was sleeping.
• 1:10:43
Speaker 1: Isn't he a lovely sight? Said Tweedledumb. Alice couldn't say
• 1:10:50
Speaker 1: honestly that he was. He had a tall red night
• 1:10:53
Speaker 1: cap on with a tassel, and he was lying crumpled
• 1:10:57
Speaker 1: up in a sort of untidy heap and snoring loud
• 1:11:02
Speaker 1: fit to snore his head off, as Tweedledum remarked, I'm
• 1:11:07
Speaker 1: afraid he'll catch cold with lying on the damp grass,
• 1:11:10
Speaker 1: said Alice, who was a very thoughtful little girl. He's
• 1:11:14
Speaker 1: dreaming now, said Tweedledee. And what do you think he's
• 1:11:18
Speaker 1: dreaming about? Alice said, nobody can guess that.
• 1:11:23
  Speaker 2: Why about you.
• 1:11:25
Speaker 1: Tweedledee exclaimed, clapping his hands triumphantly. And if he left
• 1:11:30
Speaker 1: off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be
• 1:11:34
Speaker 1: where I am now? Of course, said Alice, not you,
• 1:11:38
Speaker 1: Tweedledee retorted, contemptuously. You'd be noware why you're only a
• 1:11:44
Speaker 1: sort of thing in his dream? If that there king
• 1:11:48
Speaker 1: was to wake, added Tweedledum, you'd go out bang just
• 1:11:52
Speaker 1: like a candle. I shouldn't, Alice exclaimed indignantly. Besides, if
• 1:11:59
Speaker 1: I'm only a sort of thing in his dream, what
• 1:12:02
Speaker 1: are you? I should like to know? Ditto, said Tweedledumb.
• 1:12:07
Speaker 1: Ditto ditto, cried tweedled E. He shouted this so loud
• 1:12:12
Speaker 1: that Alice couldn't help saying, hush, you'll be waking him.
• 1:12:15
Speaker 1: I'm afraid if you make so much noise. Well, it's
• 1:12:19
Speaker 1: no good you're talking about waking him, said Tweedledumb. When
• 1:12:23
Speaker 1: you are only one of the things in his dream,
• 1:12:26
Speaker 1: you know very well you're not real. I am real,
• 1:12:30
Speaker 1: said Alice, and began to cry. You won't make yourself
• 1:12:35
Speaker 1: a bit realer by crying, Tweedledee remarked, there's nothing to
• 1:12:39
Speaker 1: cry about. But if I wasn't real, Alice said, half
• 1:12:45
Speaker 1: laughing through her tears, it all seemed so ridiculous. I
• 1:12:48
Speaker 1: shouldn't be able to cry. I hope you don't suppose
• 1:12:52
Speaker 1: those are real tears, Tweedledum interrupted, in a tone of
• 1:12:56
Speaker 1: great contempt. I know they're talking nonsense, Alice thought to herself,
• 1:13:02
Speaker 1: and it's foolish to cry about it. So she brushed
• 1:13:05
Speaker 1: away her tears and went on as cheerfully as she could.
• 1:13:09
Speaker 1: At any rate, I had better be getting out of
• 1:13:12
Speaker 1: the wood, for really, it's coming on very dark. Do
• 1:13:16
Speaker 1: you think it's going to rain? Tweedledum spread out a
• 1:13:19
Speaker 1: large umbrella over himself and his brother and looked up
• 1:13:23
  Speaker 1: into it.
• 1:13:24
  Speaker 4: No.
• 1:13:25
Speaker 1: I don't think it is, he said, at least not
• 1:13:28
Speaker 1: under here. No how, but it may rain outside. It
• 1:13:32
Speaker 1: may if it chooses, said Tweedledee. We've no objection. Contrariwise,
• 1:13:39
Speaker 1: selfish things, thought Alice, and she was just going to
• 1:13:42
Speaker 1: say good night and leave them when Tweedledum sprang out
• 1:13:46
Speaker 1: from under the umbrella and seized her by the wrist.
• 1:13:50
Speaker 1: Do you see that, he said, in a voice choking
• 1:13:53
Speaker 1: with passion, and his eyes grew large and yellow all
• 1:13:57
Speaker 1: in a moment, as he pointed with a trembling finger
• 1:14:01
Speaker 1: and a small white thing lying under the tree. It's
• 1:14:06
Speaker 1: only a rattle, Alice said, after a careful examination of
• 1:14:10
Speaker 1: the white thing. Not a rattle snake, you know, she added, hastily,
• 1:14:15
Speaker 1: thinking that he was frightened, and only an old rattle,
• 1:14:19
Speaker 1: quite old and broken.
• 1:14:21
Speaker 2: I knew it was.
• 1:14:23
Speaker 1: Cried Tweedledum, beginning to stamp about wildly and tear his hair.
• 1:14:28
Speaker 2: It's spoilt, of course.
• 1:14:30
Speaker 1: Here he looked at Tweedledee, who immediately sat down on
• 1:14:33
Speaker 1: the ground and tried to hide himself under the umbrella.
• 1:14:37
Speaker 1: Alice laid her hand upon his arm and said, in
• 1:14:40
Speaker 1: a soothing tone, you needn't be so angry about an
• 1:14:43
Speaker 1: old rattle. But it is an old. Tweedledum cried, in
• 1:14:48
Speaker 1: a greater fury than ever.
• 1:14:50
  Speaker 2: It's new.
• 1:14:51
Speaker 1: I tell you, I bought it yesterday, my nice new rattle,
• 1:14:55
Speaker 1: and his voice rose to a perfect scream. All this time,
• 1:15:00
Speaker 1: Tweedledee was trying his best to fold up the umbrella
• 1:15:04
Speaker 1: with himself in it, which was such an extraordinary thing
• 1:15:07
Speaker 1: to do that it quite took off Alice's attention from
• 1:15:09
Speaker 1: the angry brother. But he couldn't quite succeed, and it
• 1:15:13
Speaker 1: ended in his rolling over, bundled up in the umbrella
• 1:15:16
Speaker 1: with only his head out, And there he lay, opening
• 1:15:20
Speaker 1: and shutting his mouth and his large eyes, looking more
• 1:15:23
Speaker 1: like fish than anything else. Alice thought, of course, you
• 1:15:28
Speaker 1: agree to have a battle, Tweedledarm said in a calmer tone.
• 1:15:32
Speaker 1: I suppose so, the other sulkily replied, as he crawled
• 1:15:36
Speaker 1: out of the umbrella. Only she must help us to
• 1:15:39
Speaker 1: dress up, you know. So the two brothers went off
• 1:15:42
Speaker 1: hand in hand into the wood, and returned in a
• 1:15:45
Speaker 1: minute with her arms full of things such as bolsters, blankets,
• 1:15:49
Speaker 1: hearth rugs, tablecloths, dish covers, and coal scuttles. I hope
• 1:15:54
Speaker 1: you're a good hand at pitting and tying strings, Tweedledarm remarked.
• 1:15:59
Speaker 1: Every one of these things has to go on somehow
• 1:16:02
Speaker 1: or other. Alice said afterwards that she had never seen
• 1:16:06
Speaker 1: such a fuss made about anything in all her life,
• 1:16:09
Speaker 1: the way those two bustled about, and the quantity of
• 1:16:12
Speaker 1: things they put on, and the trouble they gave her
• 1:16:15
Speaker 1: in tying strings and fastening buttons. Really, they'll be more
• 1:16:20
Speaker 1: like bundles of old clothes than anything else by the
• 1:16:23
Speaker 1: time they're ready, she said to herself, as she arranged
• 1:16:26
Speaker 1: a bolster around the neck of Tweedledee to keep his
• 1:16:30
Speaker 1: head from being cut off. As he said, you know,
• 1:16:34
Speaker 1: he added, very gravely, it's one of the most serious
• 1:16:37
Speaker 1: things that can possibly happen. To one in a battle
• 1:16:40
Speaker 1: to get one's head cut off. Alice laughed aloud, but
• 1:16:44
Speaker 1: she managed to turn it into a cough for fear
• 1:16:47
Speaker 1: of hurting his feelings. Do I look very pale? Said Tweedledumb,
• 1:16:52
Speaker 1: coming up to have his helm tide on, he called
• 1:16:55
Speaker 1: to helmet, though it certainly looked much more like a saucepan. Well, yes,
• 1:17:01
Speaker 1: a little, Alice replied gently. I'm very brave generally, he
• 1:17:06
Speaker 1: went on in a low voice. Only today I happen
• 1:17:10
Speaker 1: to have a headache, and I've got a toothache, said Tweedledee,
• 1:17:14
Speaker 1: who had overheard the remark, I'm far worse off than you.
• 1:17:19
Speaker 1: Then you better not fight today, said Alice, thinking it
• 1:17:23
Speaker 1: a good opportunity to make peace. We must have a
• 1:17:26
Speaker 1: bit of a fight, but I don't care about going
• 1:17:28
Speaker 1: on long, said Tweedledumb. What's the time now? Tweedledee looked
• 1:17:34
Speaker 1: at his watch and said half past four. Let's fight
• 1:17:39
Speaker 1: until six and then have dinner, said Tweedledumb. Very well,
• 1:17:44
Speaker 1: the other said, rather sadly, and she can watch us.
• 1:17:48
Speaker 1: Only you'd better not come very close, he added. I
• 1:17:52
Speaker 1: generally hit everything I can see when I get really excited,
• 1:17:57
Speaker 1: and I hit everything within reach, cried Tweedledum, whether I
• 1:18:02
Speaker 1: can see it or not. Alice laughed. You must hit
• 1:18:06
Speaker 1: the trees pretty often, I should think, she said. Tweedledum
• 1:18:09
Speaker 1: looked round him with a satisfied smile. I don't suppose,
• 1:18:13
Speaker 1: he said, there'll be a tree left standing for ever
• 1:18:17
Speaker 1: so far round by the time we've finished. And all
• 1:18:21
Speaker 1: about a rattle, said Alice, still hoping to make them
• 1:18:25
Speaker 1: a little ashamed of fighting for such a trifle. I
• 1:18:28
Speaker 1: shouldn't have minded it so much, said Tweedledum. If it
• 1:18:32
Speaker 1: hadn't been a new one. I wish the monstrous crow
• 1:18:36
Speaker 1: would come, thought Alice. There's only one sword, you know,
• 1:18:41
Speaker 1: Tweedledum said to his brother, But you can have the umbrella.
• 1:18:44
Speaker 1: It's quite as sharp. Only we must be quick. It's
• 1:18:48
Speaker 1: getting as dark as it can and darker, said Tweedledee.
• 1:18:53
Speaker 1: It was getting dark so suddenly that Alice thought there
• 1:18:56
Speaker 1: must be a thunderstorm coming on. What a thick black
• 1:19:00
Speaker 1: cloud that is, she said, And how fast it comes? Why,
• 1:19:05
Speaker 1: I do believe it's got wings. It's the crowd, tweedled
• 1:19:10
Speaker 1: Um cried out in a shrill voice of alarm, and
• 1:19:14
Speaker 1: the two brothers took to their heels and were out
• 1:19:16
Speaker 1: of sight. In a moment, Alice ran a little way
• 1:19:20
Speaker 1: into the wood and stopped under a large tree. It
• 1:19:24
Speaker 1: can never get at me here, she thought. It's far
• 1:19:28
Speaker 1: too large to squeeze itself in among the trees. But
• 1:19:31
Speaker 1: I wish it wouldn't flap its wings, so it makes
• 1:19:34
Speaker 1: quite a hurricane in the wood. Here's somebody shawl being
• 1:19:38
Speaker 1: blown away. End of Chapter four, Chapter five, Wool and Water.
• 1:19:48
Speaker 1: She caught the shawl as she spoke and looked about
• 1:19:51
Speaker 1: for the owner. In another moment, the White Queen came
• 1:19:54
Speaker 1: running wildly through the wood with both arms stretched out wide,
• 1:19:59
Speaker 1: as if you were flying, and Alice very civilly went
• 1:20:03
Speaker 1: to meet her with the shawl. I'm very glad I
• 1:20:07
Speaker 1: happened to be in the way, Alice said, as she
• 1:20:10
Speaker 1: helped her to put on her shawl again. The White
• 1:20:13
Speaker 1: Queen only looked at her in a helpless, frightened sort
• 1:20:16
Speaker 1: of way, and kept repeating something in a whisper to
• 1:20:19
Speaker 1: herself that sounded like bread and butter, bread and butter.
• 1:20:24
Speaker 1: And Alice felt that if there was to be any
• 1:20:26
Speaker 1: conversation at all, she must manage it herself. But she
• 1:20:31
Speaker 1: began rather timidly, Am I addressing the White Queen? Well, yes,
• 1:20:37
Speaker 1: if you'll call that addressing, the queen said, it isn't
• 1:20:42
Speaker 1: my notion of the thing at all. Alice thought it
• 1:20:46
Speaker 1: would never do to have an argument at the very
• 1:20:48
Speaker 1: beginning of their conversation, so she smiled and said, if
• 1:20:52
Speaker 1: your majesty will only tell me the right way to begin,
• 1:20:56
Speaker 1: I'll do it as well as I can. But they
• 1:20:59
Speaker 1: don't want it done at all, groaned the poor queen.
• 1:21:03
Speaker 1: I've been addressing myself for the last two hours. It
• 1:21:08
Speaker 1: would have been all the better, as it seemed to Alice,
• 1:21:11
Speaker 1: if she had got somebody else to dress her. She
• 1:21:14
Speaker 1: was so dreadfully untidy. Every single thing's crooked, Alice thought
• 1:21:20
Speaker 1: to herself, and she's all over pins. May I put
• 1:21:24
Speaker 1: your shawl straight for you? She added aloud. I don't
• 1:21:28
Speaker 1: know what's the matter with it, the queen said, in
• 1:21:31
  Speaker 1: a melancholy voice. It's out of temper. I think I've
• 1:21:36
Speaker 1: pinned it here and I've pinned it there, But there's
• 1:21:39
Speaker 1: no pleasing it. It can't go straight, you know, if
• 1:21:42
Speaker 1: you pin it all on one side, Alice said, as
• 1:21:45
Speaker 1: she gently put it right for her, And dear me,
• 1:21:48
Speaker 1: what a state Your hair is in The brush has
• 1:21:52
Speaker 1: got entangled in it, the queen said, with a sigh,
• 1:21:56
Speaker 1: and I lost the comb yesterday. Alice carefully released the
• 1:22:01
Speaker 1: brush and did her best to get the hair in order.
• 1:22:05
  Speaker 2: Come.
• 1:22:06
Speaker 1: You look rather better now, she said, after altering most
• 1:22:09
Speaker 1: of the pins. But really you should have a lady's maid.
• 1:22:14
Speaker 1: I'm sure I'll take you with pleasure, the queen said. Tup,
• 1:22:19
Speaker 1: it's a week and jam every other day. Alice couldn't
• 1:22:24
Speaker 1: help laughing as she said, Ah, I don't want you
• 1:22:27
Speaker 1: to hire me, and I don't care for jam. It's
• 1:22:31
Speaker 1: very good jam, said the queen. Well, I don't want
• 1:22:35
Speaker 1: it to day at any rate. Oh, you couldn't have
• 1:22:39
Speaker 1: it if you did want it, the Queen said. The
• 1:22:42
Speaker 1: rule is jam tomorrow and jam yesterday, but never jam
• 1:22:47
Speaker 1: to day. It must come sometimes to jam to day.
• 1:22:52
Speaker 1: Alice objected, No, it can't, said the queen. It's jam
• 1:22:57
Speaker 1: every other day to day, isn't it any other day?
• 1:23:01
Speaker 1: You know? I don't understand you, said Alice. It's dreadfully confusing.
• 1:23:07
Speaker 1: That's the effect of living backwards, the queen said, kindly.
• 1:23:11
Speaker 1: It always makes one a little giddy at first. Living backwards,
• 1:23:18
Speaker 1: Alice repeated, in great astonishment. I never heard of such
• 1:23:21
Speaker 1: a thing. But there's one great advantage in it. One's
• 1:23:25
Speaker 1: memory works both ways. I'm sure mine only works one way.
• 1:23:31
Speaker 1: Alice remarked, I can't remember things before they happen. It's
• 1:23:35
Speaker 1: a poor sort of memory that only works backwards. The
• 1:23:39
Speaker 1: Queen remarked, what sort of things do you remember best?
• 1:23:44
Speaker 1: Alice ventured to ask, oh, things that happened the week
• 1:23:48
Speaker 1: after next, the Queen replied, in a careless tone, for instance. Now,
• 1:23:55
Speaker 1: She went on, sticking a large piece of plaster on
• 1:23:58
Speaker 1: her finger as she spoke, there's the King's messenger. He's
• 1:24:02
Speaker 1: in prison now, being punished, and the trial doesn't even
• 1:24:06
Speaker 1: begin till next Wednesday. And of course the crime comes
• 1:24:10
Speaker 1: last of all. Suppose he never commits a crime, said Alice.
• 1:24:15
Speaker 1: That would be all the better, wouldn't it, the queen said,
• 1:24:19
Speaker 1: as she bound the plaster round her finger with a
• 1:24:21
Speaker 1: bit of ribbon. Alice felt that there was no denying that.
• 1:24:25
Speaker 1: Of course it would be all the better, she said,
• 1:24:29
Speaker 1: But it wouldn't be all the better he's being punished.
• 1:24:34
Speaker 1: You're wrong there at any rate, said the queen. Were
• 1:24:37
Speaker 1: you ever punished? Only for faults, said Alice, And you
• 1:24:43
Speaker 1: were all the better for it, I know, the queen
• 1:24:47
Speaker 1: said triumphantly, Yes. But then I had done the things
• 1:24:51
Speaker 1: I was punished for, said Alice, And that makes all
• 1:24:55
Speaker 1: the difference. But if you hadn't done them, uh, the
• 1:24:59
Speaker 1: queen said, that would have been better. Still, better, and
• 1:25:03
Speaker 1: better and better. Her voice went higher with each better
• 1:25:08
Speaker 1: till it got quite to a squeak. At last, Alice
• 1:25:12
Speaker 1: was just beginning to say, there's a mistake somewhere when
• 1:25:16
Speaker 1: the Queen began screaming so loud that she had to
• 1:25:19
Speaker 1: leave the sentence unfinished. Ooh, ooh, ooh, shouted the queen,
• 1:25:24
Speaker 1: shaking her hand about as if she wanted to shake
• 1:25:26
Speaker 1: it off. My fingers bleeding.
• 1:25:28
Speaker 2: Who oo oo oo.
• 1:25:30
Speaker 1: Her screams were so exactly like the whistle of a
• 1:25:33
Speaker 1: steam engine that Alice had to hold her hands over
• 1:25:36
Speaker 1: her ears. What is the matter, she said, as soon
• 1:25:40
Speaker 1: as there was a chance of making herself heard. Have
• 1:25:43
Speaker 1: you pricked your finger? I haven't pricked it yet, the
• 1:25:47
Speaker 1: queen said, but I soon shall. Ooh, ooh, ooh, when
• 1:25:52
Speaker 1: do you expect to do it? Alice asked, feeling very
• 1:25:56
Speaker 1: much inclined to laugh. When I fastened my shawl again,
• 1:26:00
Speaker 1: the poor queen groaned out, the brooch will come undone directly.
• 1:26:04
Speaker 1: Hoo hoo. And as she said the words, the brooch
• 1:26:08
Speaker 1: flew open, and the Queen clutched wildly at it and
• 1:26:12
Speaker 1: tried to clasp it again. Take care, said Alice, you're
• 1:26:16
Speaker 1: holding it all crooked. And she caught at the brooch,
• 1:26:19
Speaker 1: but it was too late. The pin had slipped and
• 1:26:22
Speaker 1: the Queen had pricked her finger. That accounts for the bleeding,
• 1:26:26
Speaker 1: you'll see, she said to Alice with a smile. Now
• 1:26:31
Speaker 1: you understand the way things happen here. But why don't
• 1:26:35
Speaker 1: you scream now? Alice asked, holding her hands ready to
• 1:26:39
Speaker 1: put over her ears again. Why I've done all the
• 1:26:44
Speaker 1: screaming already, said the queen. What would be the good
• 1:26:48
Speaker 1: of having it all over again? By this time it
• 1:26:51
Speaker 1: was getting light. The crow must have flown away, I think,
• 1:26:56
Speaker 1: said Alice. I'm so glad it's gone. I thought it
• 1:26:59
Speaker 1: was the night coming on. I wish I could manage
• 1:27:03
Speaker 1: to be glad, the queen said, only I never can
• 1:27:08
Speaker 1: remember the rule. You must be very happy living in
• 1:27:11
Speaker 1: this wood and being glad whenever you like. Only it
• 1:27:15
Speaker 1: is very lonely here, Alice said in a melancholy voice,
• 1:27:20
Speaker 1: and at the thought of her loneliness, two large tears
• 1:27:24
Speaker 1: came rolling down her cheeks. Oh don't go on like that,
• 1:27:29
Speaker 1: cried the poor queen, wringing her hands in despair. Consider
• 1:27:34
Speaker 1: what a great girl you are. Consider what a long
• 1:27:37
Speaker 1: way you've come to day. Consider what o'clock it is.
• 1:27:41
Speaker 1: Consider anything, only don't cry. Alice could not help laughing
• 1:27:45
Speaker 1: at this, even in the midst of her tears. Can
• 1:27:49
Speaker 1: you keep from crying by considering things? She asked. That's
• 1:27:54
Speaker 1: the way it's done, the queen said, with great decision.
• 1:27:58
Speaker 1: Nobody can do two things once you know. Let's consider
• 1:28:02
Speaker 1: your age to begin with, how old are you? I'm
• 1:28:07
Speaker 1: seven and a half exactly. You needn't say exactly, the
• 1:28:13
Speaker 1: queen remarked. I can believe it without that. Now I'll
• 1:28:17
Speaker 1: give you something to believe. I'm just one hundred and one,
• 1:28:22
Speaker 1: five months and a day. I can't believe that, said Alice.
• 1:28:28
Speaker 1: Can't you, the queen said, in a pitying tone, Try again,
• 1:28:33
Speaker 1: draw a long breath and shut your eyes. Alice laughed.
• 1:28:39
Speaker 1: There's no use trying, she said, one can't believe impossible things.
• 1:28:44
  Speaker 2: Oh, I daresay you haven't.
• 1:28:46
Speaker 1: Had much practice, said the queen. When I was your age,
• 1:28:51
Speaker 1: I always did it for half an hour a day.
• 1:28:55
Speaker 1: Why sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things
• 1:28:58
Speaker 1: before breakfast. There goes the shawl again. The brooch had
• 1:29:03
Speaker 1: come undone as she spoke, and a sudden gust of
• 1:29:06
Speaker 1: wind blew the Queen's shawl across a little brook. The
• 1:29:10
Speaker 1: Queen spread out her arms again and went flying after it,
• 1:29:15
Speaker 1: and this time she succeeded in catching it herself. I've
• 1:29:19
Speaker 1: got it, she cried in a triumphant tone. Now you
• 1:29:23
Speaker 1: shall see me pin it on again, all by myself. Then.
• 1:29:28
Speaker 1: I hope your finger is better now, Alice said very politely,
• 1:29:32
Speaker 1: as she crossed the little brook after the queen. Oh
• 1:29:36
Speaker 1: much better, cried the queen, her voice rising to a
• 1:29:40
Speaker 1: squeak as she went on, much better, better, better, better.
• 1:29:49
Speaker 1: The last word ended in a long bleat, so like
• 1:29:53
Speaker 1: a sheep that Alice quite started. She looked at the Queen,
• 1:29:57
Speaker 1: who seemed to have suddenly wrapped herself up in wool.
• 1:30:01
Speaker 1: Alice rubbed her eyes and looked again. She couldn't make
• 1:30:04
Speaker 1: out what had happened at all. Was she in a shop,
• 1:30:08
Speaker 1: and was that really? Was that really a sheep that
• 1:30:11
Speaker 1: was sitting on the other side of the counter. Rub
• 1:30:13
Speaker 1: as she could, she could make nothing more of it.
• 1:30:17
Speaker 1: She was in a little dark shop, leaning with her
• 1:30:20
Speaker 1: elbows on the counter, and opposite to her was an
• 1:30:23
Speaker 1: old sheep sitting in an arm chair knitting, and every
• 1:30:27
Speaker 1: now and then leaving off to look at her through
• 1:30:30
Speaker 1: a great pair of spectacles. What is it that you
• 1:30:33
Speaker 1: want to buy, the sheep said, at last, looking up
• 1:30:36
Speaker 1: for a moment from her knitting. I don't quite know yet,
• 1:30:41
Speaker 1: Alice said, very gently. I should like to look all
• 1:30:44
Speaker 1: around me first, if I might. You may look in frontevie,
• 1:30:48
Speaker 1: and on both sides if you like, said the sheep.
• 1:30:52
Speaker 1: That you can't look all around you unless you've got
• 1:30:56
Speaker 1: eyes in the back of your head. But these as
• 1:30:59
Speaker 1: it had happened, Alice had not got so she contented
• 1:31:03
Speaker 1: herself with turning around, looking at the shelves as she
• 1:31:06
Speaker 1: came to them. The shop seemed to be full of
• 1:31:10
Speaker 1: all manner of curious things, But the oddest part of
• 1:31:13
Speaker 1: it all was that whenever she looked hard at any
• 1:31:16
Speaker 1: shelf to make out exactly what it had on it.
• 1:31:19
Speaker 1: That particular shelf was always quite empty, though the others
• 1:31:23
Speaker 1: round it were as crowded as full as they could hold.
• 1:31:27
Speaker 1: Things flow about. So here, she said at last, in
• 1:31:31
Speaker 1: a plaintive tone, after she had spent a minute or
• 1:31:35
Speaker 1: so in vainly pursuing a large, bright thing that looked
• 1:31:39
Speaker 1: sometimes like a doll and sometimes like a work box,
• 1:31:43
Speaker 1: and was always in the shelf next above the one
• 1:31:47
Speaker 1: she was looking at. And this one is the most
• 1:31:49
Speaker 1: provoking of all. But I'll tell you what, she added,
• 1:31:53
Speaker 1: as a sudden thought struck her. I'll follow it up
• 1:31:56
Speaker 1: to the very top shelf of all. It'll puzzle it
• 1:32:00
Speaker 1: to go through the ceiling, I expect. But even this
• 1:32:03
Speaker 1: plan failed. The thing went through the ceiling as quietly
• 1:32:07
Speaker 1: as possible, as if it were quite used to it.
• 1:32:10
Speaker 1: Are you a child or a teetotal the sheep said,
• 1:32:15
Speaker 1: as she took up another pair of needles. Y'all make
• 1:32:18
Speaker 1: me giddy, said, if you go on turning round like that.
• 1:32:23
Speaker 1: She was now working with fourteen pairs at once, and
• 1:32:26
Speaker 1: Alice couldn't help looking at her in great astonishment. How
• 1:32:30
Speaker 1: can she knit with so many, the puzzled child thought
• 1:32:34
Speaker 1: to herself, She gets more and more like a porcupine
• 1:32:37
Speaker 1: every minute. Can you row, the sheep asked, handing her
• 1:32:42
Speaker 1: a pair of knitting needles. As she spoke, yes, a little,
• 1:32:47
Speaker 1: but not on land, and not with needles. Alice was
• 1:32:51
Speaker 1: beginning to say when suddenly the needles turned into oars
• 1:32:55
Speaker 1: in her hands, and she found they were in a
• 1:32:58
Speaker 1: little boat gliding along between banks. So there was nothing
• 1:33:02
Speaker 1: for it but to do her best, Feather, cried the sheep,
• 1:33:08
Speaker 1: as she took up another pair of needles. This didn't
• 1:33:12
Speaker 1: sound like a remark that needed any answer, so Alice
• 1:33:15
Speaker 1: said nothing, but pulled away. There was something very queer
• 1:33:19
Speaker 1: about the water, she thought, as every now and then
• 1:33:23
Speaker 1: the oars got fast in it and would hardly come
• 1:33:26
Speaker 1: out again. Feather, Feather, the sheep cried, again, taking more needles.
• 1:33:33
Speaker 1: You'll be catching a crab directly, a dear little crab,
• 1:33:38
Speaker 1: thought Alice. I should like that. Did you hear me say, feather,
• 1:33:43
Speaker 1: the sheep cried, angrily, taking up quite a bunch of needles. Ah,
• 1:33:49
Speaker 1: indeed I did, said Alice. You've said it very often
• 1:33:54
Speaker 1: and very loud um. But please well Ah, the crabs
• 1:34:01
Speaker 1: in the water, of course, said the sheep, sticking some
• 1:34:05
Speaker 1: of the needles into her hair, as her hands were
• 1:34:07
Speaker 1: very full feather. I say, why do you say feather
• 1:34:12
Speaker 1: so often, Alice asked, at last, rather vexed, I'm not
• 1:34:17
Speaker 1: a bird, you are, said the sheep, You are a
• 1:34:21
Speaker 1: little goose. This offended Alice a little, so there was
• 1:34:25
Speaker 1: no more conversation for a minute or two while the
• 1:34:28
Speaker 1: boat glided gently on, sometimes among beds of weeds which
• 1:34:32
Speaker 1: made the oars stick fast in the water worse than ever,
• 1:34:36
Speaker 1: and sometimes under trees, but all was with the same
• 1:34:40
Speaker 1: tall river banks frowning over their heads. Oh please, there
• 1:34:44
Speaker 1: are some scented rushes, Alice cried, in a sudden transport
• 1:34:48
Speaker 1: of delight. There really are, and such beauties. You needn't
• 1:34:54
Speaker 1: say please to me about em, the sheep said, without
• 1:34:58
Speaker 1: looking up from her knitting. I didn't put em there,
• 1:35:01
Speaker 1: and I'm not going to take em away. No, but
• 1:35:05
Speaker 1: I meant please, may we wait and pick some? Alice pleaded.
• 1:35:10
Speaker 1: If you don't mind stopping the boat for a minute,
• 1:35:13
Speaker 1: How am I to stop it, said the sheep. If
• 1:35:16
Speaker 1: you'll leave off rowing, it'll stop itself. So the boat
• 1:35:20
Speaker 1: was left to drift down the stream as it would
• 1:35:23
Speaker 1: till it glided gently in among the waving rushes, and
• 1:35:27
Speaker 1: then the little sleeves were carefully rolled up, and the
• 1:35:30
Speaker 1: little arms were plunged in elbow deep to get the
• 1:35:33
Speaker 1: rushes a good long way down before breaking them off.
• 1:35:38
Speaker 1: And for a while Alice forgot all about the sheep
• 1:35:41
Speaker 1: and the knitting, and she bent over the side of
• 1:35:44
Speaker 1: the boat with just the ends of her tangled hair
• 1:35:47
Speaker 1: dipping into the water, while with bright, eager eyes she
• 1:35:51
Speaker 1: caught at one bunch after another of the darling scented rushes.
• 1:35:56
Speaker 1: I only hope the boat won't tipple over, she said
• 1:35:59
Speaker 1: to herself. Oh what a lovely one. Only I couldn't
• 1:36:03
Speaker 1: quite reach it. And it certainly did seem a little provoking,
• 1:36:08
Speaker 1: almost as if it happened on purpose. She thought that
• 1:36:12
Speaker 1: though she managed to pick plenty of beautiful rushes as
• 1:36:16
Speaker 1: the boat glided by, there was always a more lovely
• 1:36:20
Speaker 1: one that she couldn't reach. The prettiest are always further,
• 1:36:25
Speaker 1: she said at last, with a sigh at the obstinacy
• 1:36:28
Speaker 1: of those rushes in growing so far off, as with
• 1:36:32
Speaker 1: flushed cheeks and dripping hair and hands, she scrambled back
• 1:36:36
Speaker 1: into her place and began to arrange her new found treasures.
• 1:36:41
Speaker 1: What mattered it to her just then that the rushes
• 1:36:44
Speaker 1: had began to fade and lose all their scent and
• 1:36:47
Speaker 1: beauty from the very moment she had picked them. Even
• 1:36:51
Speaker 1: real scented rushes, you know, last only a very little while,
• 1:36:56
Speaker 1: and these, being dream rushes, melted away almost like snow
• 1:37:01
Speaker 1: as they lay in heaps at her feet. But Alice
• 1:37:04
Speaker 1: hardly noticed this, there were so many other curious things
• 1:37:09
Speaker 1: to look about. They hadn't got much further before the
• 1:37:12
Speaker 1: blade of one of the oars got fast in the
• 1:37:15
Speaker 1: water and wouldn't come out again, so Alice explained it afterwards,
• 1:37:20
Speaker 1: And the consequence of this was that the handle of
• 1:37:23
Speaker 1: it caught her under the chin, and in spite of
• 1:37:26
Speaker 1: a series of little shrieks of oo oo oo from
• 1:37:31
Speaker 1: poor Alice, it swept her straight off the seat and
• 1:37:35
Speaker 1: down among the heaps of rushes. However, she wasn't hurt
• 1:37:40
Speaker 1: and was soon up again. The sheep went on with her,
• 1:37:43
Speaker 1: knitting all the while, just as if nothing had happened.
• 1:37:47
Speaker 1: That was a nice crab, you cart, she remarked, as
• 1:37:51
Speaker 1: Alice got back into her place, very much relieved to
• 1:37:55
Speaker 1: find herself still in the boat. Was it I didn't
• 1:37:58
Speaker 1: see it, said Alice, being cautiously over the side of
• 1:38:01
Speaker 1: the boat into the dark water. I wish I hadn't
• 1:38:05
Speaker 1: let it go. I should so like to see a
• 1:38:08
Speaker 1: little crab to take home with me. But the sheep
• 1:38:11
Speaker 1: only laughed scornfully and went on with her knitting. Are
• 1:38:16
Speaker 1: there many crabs here, said Alice. Crabs and all sorts
• 1:38:21
Speaker 1: of things, said the sheep, plenty of choice. Only make
• 1:38:27
Speaker 1: up your mind, now, what do you want to buy?
• 1:38:33
Speaker 1: To buy? Alice echoed, in a tone that was half
• 1:38:35
Speaker 1: astonished and half frightened, for the oars and the boat
• 1:38:40
Speaker 1: and the river had vanished in a moment, and she
• 1:38:43
Speaker 1: was back again in the little dark shop. I should
• 1:38:46
Speaker 1: like to buy an egg, please, she said, timidly. How
• 1:38:50
Speaker 1: do you sell them fivepence farthing for one? Happence for two?
• 1:38:55
Speaker 1: The sheep replied, Then two are cheaper than one, Alice said,
• 1:39:01
Speaker 1: in a surprised tone, taking out her purse. Only you
• 1:39:04
Speaker 1: must eat them both if you buy two, said the sheep.
• 1:39:09
Speaker 1: Then I'll have one, please, said Alice, as she put
• 1:39:13
Speaker 1: the money down on the counter, For she thought to herself,
• 1:39:17
Speaker 1: they mightn't be at all nice, you know. The sheep
• 1:39:20
Speaker 1: took the money and put it away in a box.
• 1:39:23
Speaker 1: Then she said, I'd never put things in people's hands.
• 1:39:28
Speaker 1: That would never do. You must get it for yourself,
• 1:39:33
Speaker 1: and so saying, she went off to the other end
• 1:39:36
Speaker 1: of the shop and set the egg upright on a shelf.
• 1:39:40
Speaker 1: I wonder why it wouldn't do, thought Alice, as she
• 1:39:43
Speaker 1: groped her way among the tables and chairs, for the
• 1:39:46
Speaker 1: shop was very dark toward the end. The egg seems
• 1:39:51
Speaker 1: to get further away the more I walked towards it.
• 1:39:55
Speaker 1: Let me see, is this a chair? Why it's got branches?
• 1:39:59
Speaker 1: I declar, How very odd to find trees growing here?
• 1:40:03
Speaker 1: And actually here's a little brook. Why this is the
• 1:40:08
Speaker 1: very queerest shop I ever saw. So she went on wondering,
• 1:40:14
Speaker 1: more and more at every step, as everything turned into
• 1:40:18
Speaker 1: a tree the moment she came up to it, and
• 1:40:21
Speaker 1: she quite expected the egg to do the same. End
• 1:40:28
Speaker 1: of chapter five, Chapter six, Humpty dumpty. However, the egg
• 1:40:36
Speaker 1: only got larger and larger and more and more human.
• 1:40:40
Speaker 1: When she had come within a few yards of it,
• 1:40:43
Speaker 1: she saw that it had eyes and a nose and
• 1:40:45
Speaker 1: a mouth. And when she had come close to it,
• 1:40:49
Speaker 1: she saw clearly that it was Humpty Dumpty himself. It
• 1:40:54
Speaker 1: can't be anybody else, she said to herself. I'm as
• 1:40:59
Speaker 1: certain of it as if his name were written all
• 1:41:02
Speaker 1: over his face. It might have been written a hundred
• 1:41:05
Speaker 1: times easily on that enormous face. Humpty Dumpty was sitting
• 1:41:10
Speaker 1: with his legs crossed like a turk on the top
• 1:41:13
Speaker 1: of a high wall, such a narrow one that Alice
• 1:41:16
Speaker 1: quite wondered how he could keep his balance, And as
• 1:41:20
Speaker 1: his eyes were steadily fixed in the opposite direction, and
• 1:41:23
Speaker 1: he didn't take the least notice of her, she thought
• 1:41:27
Speaker 1: he must be a stuffed figure after all. And how
• 1:41:31
Speaker 1: exactly like an egg he is, she said aloud, standing
• 1:41:36
Speaker 1: with her hands ready to catch him, for she was
• 1:41:39
Speaker 1: every moment expecting him to fall. It's very provoking, Humpty
• 1:41:46
Speaker 1: Dumpty said, after a long silence, looking away from Alice
• 1:41:50
Speaker 1: as he spoke. To be called an egg, very I said,
• 1:41:56
Speaker 1: you looked like an egg, sir, Alice explained, And some
• 1:42:02
Speaker 1: eggs are very pretty, you know, she added, hoping to
• 1:42:05
Speaker 1: turn her remark into a sort of a compliment. Some
• 1:42:09
Speaker 1: people said, Humpty Dumpty, looking away from her as usual,
• 1:42:14
Speaker 1: have no more sense than a baby. Alice didn't know
• 1:42:19
Speaker 1: what to say to this. It wasn't at all like conversation,
• 1:42:22
Speaker 1: she thought, as he never said anything to her. In fact,
• 1:42:26
Speaker 1: his last remark was evidently addressed to a tree. So
• 1:42:30
Speaker 1: she stood and softly repeated to herself, Humpty Dumpty sat
• 1:42:35
Speaker 1: on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All
• 1:42:39
Speaker 1: the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put
• 1:42:43
Speaker 1: Humpty Dumpty in his place again. That last line is
• 1:42:48
Speaker 1: much too long for the poetry, she added, almost out loud,
• 1:42:51
Speaker 1: forgetting that Humpty Dumpty could hear her. Don't stand there
• 1:42:57
Speaker 1: chattering to yourself like Thathumpty Dumpty said, looking at her
• 1:43:01
Speaker 1: for the first time. But tell me your name and
• 1:43:05
Speaker 1: your business. My name is Alice. But oh, it's a
• 1:43:10
Speaker 1: stupid enough name, Humpty Dumpty interrupted impatiently. What does it mean?
• 1:43:17
Speaker 1: Must a name mean something? Alice asked doubtfully. Of course
• 1:43:22
Speaker 1: it must, Humpty Dumpty said, with a short laugh. My
• 1:43:28
Speaker 1: name means the shape I am, and a good handsome shape.
• 1:43:31
Speaker 1: It is too, with a name like yours, you might
• 1:43:35
Speaker 1: be any shape almost. Why do you sit out here
• 1:43:39
Speaker 1: all alone? Said Alice, not wishing to begin an argument,
• 1:43:44
Speaker 1: why because there's nobody with me, cried Humpty dumpty. Do
• 1:43:47
Speaker 1: you think I didn't know the answer to that? Ask another?
• 1:43:53
Speaker 1: Don't you think you'd be safer on the ground? Alice
• 1:43:56
Speaker 1: went on, not with any idea of making another riddle,
• 1:43:59
Speaker 1: but simply in her good natured anxiety for the queer creature.
• 1:44:04
Speaker 1: That wall is so very narrow. What tremendously easy riddles
• 1:44:10
Speaker 1: you ask? Humpty Dumpty growled out, of course, I don't
• 1:44:15
Speaker 1: think so. Why if ever I did fall off, which
• 1:44:19
Speaker 1: there's no chance of. But if I did, here he
• 1:44:24
Speaker 1: pursed his lips and looked so solemn and grand that
• 1:44:27
Speaker 1: Alice could hardly help laughing. If I did fall he
• 1:44:33
Speaker 1: went on, the King has promised me, with his very
• 1:44:36
Speaker 1: own mouth to to to send all his horses and
• 1:44:41
Speaker 1: all his men. Alice interrupted, rather unwisely. Now I declare
• 1:44:47
Speaker 1: that's too bad, Humpty Dumpty, cried, breaking into a sudden passion.
• 1:44:52
Speaker 1: You've been listening at doors and behind trees and down chimneys,
• 1:44:57
Speaker 1: or you couldn't have known it. I haven't, indeed, Alice said,
• 1:45:02
Speaker 1: very gently, it's in a book. Ah Well, they may
• 1:45:07
Speaker 1: write such things in our book, Humpty Dumpty said, in
• 1:45:11
Speaker 1: a calmer tone. That's what you call a history of England.
• 1:45:15
Speaker 1: That is. Now, take a good look at me. I'm
• 1:45:19
Speaker 1: one that has spoken to a king. I am mayhap
• 1:45:23
Speaker 1: you'll never see such another. And to show you I'm
• 1:45:26
Speaker 1: not proud, you may shake hands with me. And he
• 1:45:30
Speaker 1: grinned almost from ear to ear as he leant forwards,
• 1:45:34
Speaker 1: and as nearly as possible, fell off the wall in
• 1:45:38
Speaker 1: doing so, and offered Alice's hand. She watched him a
• 1:45:42
Speaker 1: little anxiously as she took it. If he smiled much more,
• 1:45:47
Speaker 1: the ends of his mouth might meet behind, she thought.
• 1:45:52
Speaker 1: And then I don't know what would happen to his head.
• 1:45:55
Speaker 1: I'm afraid it would come off. Yes, all his horses
• 1:45:59
Speaker 1: and all his men, Humpty Dumpty went on. They'd pick
• 1:46:03
Speaker 1: me up again in a minute, they would hum However,
• 1:46:07
Speaker 1: this conversation is going a little too fast. Let's go
• 1:46:11
Speaker 1: back to the last remark, but one I'm afraid I
• 1:46:15
Speaker 1: can't quite remember it, Alice said, very politely. In that case,
• 1:46:20
Speaker 1: we start afresh, said Humpty Dumpty. And it's my turn
• 1:46:25
Speaker 1: to choose a subject. He talks about it just as
• 1:46:29
Speaker 1: if it was a game, thought Alice. So here's a
• 1:46:33
Speaker 1: question for you. How old did you say you were?
• 1:46:39
Speaker 1: Alice made a short calculation and said seven years and
• 1:46:43
Speaker 1: six months. Wrong, Humpty Dumpty exclaimed triumphantly. You never said
• 1:46:49
Speaker 1: a word like it. I thought you meant how old
• 1:46:53
Speaker 1: are you? Alice explained. If I'd meant that, I'd have
• 1:46:57
Speaker 1: said it, said Humpty Dumpty. Alice didn't want to begin
• 1:47:01
Speaker 1: another argument, so she said nothing. Seven years and six months,
• 1:47:07
Speaker 1: Humpty Dumpty repeated, thoughtfully, an uncomfortable sort of age. Now,
• 1:47:12
Speaker 1: if you'd asked my advice, I'd have said leave off
• 1:47:16
Speaker 1: at seven. But it's too late now. I never ask
• 1:47:21
Speaker 1: advice about growing, Alice said, indignantly. Too proud, the other inquired.
• 1:47:28
Speaker 1: Alice felt even more indignant at this suggestion. I mean,
• 1:47:33
Speaker 1: she said that one can't help growing older. One can't, perhaps,
• 1:47:39
Speaker 1: said Humpty Dumpty, But two can with proper assistance. You
• 1:47:43
Speaker 1: might have left off at seven. What a beautiful belt
• 1:47:47
Speaker 1: you've got on, Alice suddenly remarked. They had had quite
• 1:47:51
Speaker 1: enough of the subject of age. She thought, and if
• 1:47:55
Speaker 1: they really were to take turns in choosing subjects, it
• 1:47:58
Speaker 1: was her turn. Now east, she corrected herself on second thoughts,
• 1:48:03
Speaker 1: A beautiful cravat. I should have said, no, a belt.
• 1:48:06
Speaker 1: I mean, I beg your pardon, she added, in dismay
• 1:48:10
Speaker 1: for Humpty Dumpty looked thoroughly offended, and she began to
• 1:48:14
Speaker 1: wish she hadn't chosen that subject. If I only knew,
• 1:48:19
Speaker 1: she thought to herself, which was neck and which was waiste.
• 1:48:24
Speaker 1: Evidently Humpty Dumpty was very angry, though he said nothing
• 1:48:28
Speaker 1: for a minute or two. When he did speak again,
• 1:48:31
Speaker 1: it was in a deep growl. It is a most
• 1:48:34
Speaker 1: provoking thing, he said at last. When a person doesn't
• 1:48:39
  Speaker 1: know a cravat from a belt, I know, it's very
• 1:48:44
Speaker 1: ignorant of me, Alice said, in so humble a tone
• 1:48:48
Speaker 1: that Humpty Dumpty relented. It's a cravat, child, and a
• 1:48:53
Speaker 1: beautiful one, as you say, it's a present from the
• 1:48:55
Speaker 1: White King and Queen.
• 1:48:57
  Speaker 2: There.
• 1:48:57
Speaker 1: Now is it really? Said Alice. It's quite pleased to
• 1:49:01
Speaker 1: find that she had chosen a good subject. After all,
• 1:49:05
Speaker 1: they gave it to me, Humpty Dumpty continued thoughtfully, as
• 1:49:10
Speaker 1: he crossed one knee over the other and clasped his
• 1:49:12
Speaker 1: hands around it. They gave it to me for an
• 1:49:16
Speaker 1: unbirthday present. I beg your pardon, Alice said, with a
• 1:49:21
Speaker 1: puzzled air. I'm not offended, said Humpty Dumpty. I mean,
• 1:49:26
Speaker 1: what is an unbirthday present? A present given when it
• 1:49:30
Speaker 1: isn't your birthday? Of course, Alice considered a little I
• 1:49:35
Speaker 1: like birthday presents best, she said, at last, I don't
• 1:49:41
Speaker 1: know what you're talking about, cried Humpty Dumpty. How many
• 1:49:44
Speaker 1: days are there at a year? Three hundred and sixty five,
• 1:49:48
Speaker 1: said Alice. And how many birthdays have you one? And
• 1:49:53
Speaker 1: if you take one from three hundred and sixty five,
• 1:49:56
Speaker 1: what remains three hundred and sixty four? Of course, Humpty
• 1:50:02
Speaker 1: Dumpty looked doubtful. I'd rather see that done on paper,
• 1:50:06
Speaker 1: he said. Alice couldn't help smiling as she took out
• 1:50:11
Speaker 1: her memorandum book and worked the sum for him three
• 1:50:15
Speaker 1: hundred and sixty five minus one leaves three hundred and
• 1:50:19
Speaker 1: sixty four. Humpty Dumpty took the book and looked at
• 1:50:23
Speaker 1: it carefully. That seems to be done right, he began.
• 1:50:28
Speaker 1: You're holding it upside down, Alice interrupted, to be sure,
• 1:50:32
Speaker 1: I was, Humpty Dumpty said gaily as she turned it
• 1:50:35
Speaker 1: around for him. I thought it looked a little queer
• 1:50:39
Speaker 1: as I was saying, that seems to be done right,
• 1:50:42
Speaker 1: though I haven't time to look over it thoroughly just now.
• 1:50:45
Speaker 1: And that shows that there are three hundred and sixty
• 1:50:49
Speaker 1: four days when you might get un birthday presents, certainly,
• 1:50:54
Speaker 1: said Alice, and only one four birthday presents, you know,
• 1:50:59
Speaker 1: the glory for you. I don't know what you mean
• 1:51:03
Speaker 1: by glory, Alice, said, Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. Of course
• 1:51:10
  Speaker 1: you don't till I tell you. I meant there's a
• 1:51:14
Speaker 1: nice knockdown argument for you. But glory doesn't mean a
• 1:51:19
Speaker 1: nice knockdown argument. Alice objected. When I use a word,
• 1:51:26
Speaker 1: Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, it means
• 1:51:30
Speaker 1: just what I'd choose it to mean, neither more nor less.
• 1:51:34
Speaker 1: The question is, said Alice, whether you can make words
• 1:51:39
Speaker 1: mean so many different things? The question is, said Humpty Dumpty,
• 1:51:44
Speaker 1: which is to be master? That's all. Alice was too
• 1:51:48
Speaker 1: much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute, Humpty
• 1:51:52
Speaker 1: Dumpty began again. They've attempered some of them, particularly verbs.
• 1:51:57
Speaker 1: They are the proudest adjectives, you can do anything with them,
• 1:52:01
Speaker 1: but not verbs. However, I can manage the whole lot
• 1:52:04
Speaker 1: of them. Impenetrability, that's what I say. Would you tell me, please,
• 1:52:11
  Speaker 1: said Alice.
• 1:52:12
  Speaker 2: What that means?
• 1:52:14
Speaker 1: Now you talk like a reasonable child, said Humpty Dumpty,
• 1:52:18
Speaker 1: looking very much pleased. I meant by impenetrability that we've
• 1:52:24
Speaker 1: had enough of that subject. And it would be just
• 1:52:27
Speaker 1: as well if you mention what you mean to do next,
• 1:52:30
Speaker 1: as I suppose you don't mean to stop here all
• 1:52:33
Speaker 1: the rest of your life. That's a great deal to
• 1:52:36
Speaker 1: make one word mean, Alice said, in a thoughtful tone.
• 1:52:40
Speaker 1: When I make a word, do a lot of work
• 1:52:42
Speaker 1: like that, said Humpty Dumpty. I always pay it extra, oh,
• 1:52:48
Speaker 1: said Alice. She was much too puzzled to make any
• 1:52:52
Speaker 1: other remark. Ah, you should see him coming round me
• 1:52:55
Speaker 1: of a Saturday night. Humpty Dumpty went on wagging his
• 1:52:59
Speaker 1: head gravely from side to side. For to get their wages.
• 1:53:03
Speaker 1: You know, Alice didn't venture to ask what he paid
• 1:53:07
Speaker 1: them with, So you can see. I can't tell you.
• 1:53:12
Speaker 1: You seem very clever at explaining words, sir, said Alice.
• 1:53:16
Speaker 1: Would you kindly tell me the meaning of the poem
• 1:53:19
Speaker 1: called Jabberwockie. Let's hear it. I can explain all poems
• 1:53:24
Speaker 1: that were ever invented, and a good many that haven't
• 1:53:27
Speaker 1: been invented just yet. This sounded very hopeful, so Alice
• 1:53:32
Speaker 1: repeated the first verse, Twas Brillig and the slyy toes
• 1:53:37
Speaker 1: did geire and gimble in the wabe all mimsy were
• 1:53:41
Speaker 1: the bot of goves and mowm Rath's outgrabe. That's enough
• 1:53:46
Speaker 1: to begin with. Humpty Dumpty interrupted. There are plenty of
• 1:53:50
Speaker 1: hard words there. Brillig means four o'clock in the afternoon,
• 1:53:55
Speaker 1: the time when you begin broiling things for dinner. That'll
• 1:54:00
Speaker 1: do very well, said Alice. And slythe well slythy means lithe,
• 1:54:06
Speaker 1: and slimy lithe is the same as active. You see,
• 1:54:11
Speaker 1: It's like a portmanteau. There are two meanings packed up
• 1:54:14
Speaker 1: into one word. I see it now, Alice remarked thoughtfully.
• 1:54:20
Speaker 1: And what are toves. Well, toves are something like badgers,
• 1:54:26
Speaker 1: they're something like lizards, and there's something like corkscrews. They
• 1:54:32
Speaker 1: must be very curious looking creatures they are, that, said
• 1:54:36
Speaker 1: Humpty Humpty. Also, they make their nests under sun dials.
• 1:54:40
Speaker 1: Also they live on cheese. And what's the gyre? And
• 1:54:46
Speaker 1: to gimbal to gyre is to go round and round
• 1:54:51
Speaker 1: like a gyroscope. To gimbal is to make holes like
• 1:54:55
Speaker 1: a gimblet. And the wave is the grass plot round
• 1:54:59
Speaker 1: the sun dial, I suppose, said Alice, surprised at her
• 1:55:02
Speaker 1: own ingenuity. It's called wave, you know, because it goes
• 1:55:06
Speaker 1: a long way before it, and a long way behind it,
• 1:55:10
Speaker 1: and a long way beyond it on each side. Alice answered,
• 1:55:14
Speaker 1: exactly so. Well, then mimsy is flimsy and miserable. There's
• 1:55:21
Speaker 1: another portmanteau for you. And a borrowgove is a thin,
• 1:55:26
Speaker 1: shabby looking bird with its feathers sticking out all around,
• 1:55:29
Speaker 1: something like a live mop. And then mome raths, said Alice,
• 1:55:35
Speaker 1: I'm afraid I'm giving you a great deal of trouble. Well,
• 1:55:38
Speaker 1: a rath is a sort of green pig, But mome
• 1:55:42
Speaker 1: I'm not certain about. I think it's short for from home,
• 1:55:47
Speaker 1: meaning that they lost their way, you know. And what
• 1:55:51
Speaker 1: does outgrabe mean? Well, out grabing is something between bellowing
• 1:55:57
Speaker 1: and whistling, with a kind of sneak in the middle. However,
• 1:56:02
Speaker 1: you'll hear it done maybe down in the wood yonder,
• 1:56:06
Speaker 1: and when you've once heard it, you'll be quite content.
• 1:56:09
Speaker 1: Who has been repeating all that hard stuff to you?
• 1:56:13
Speaker 1: I read it in a book, said Alice. But I
• 1:56:16
Speaker 1: had some poetry repeated to me much easier than that
• 1:56:20
Speaker 1: by Tweedledee. I think it was as to poetry, you know,
• 1:56:25
Speaker 1: said Humpty Dumpty, stretching out one of his great hands.
• 1:56:28
Speaker 1: I can repeat poetry as well as other folk, if
• 1:56:31
Speaker 1: it comes to that. Oh, oh, it needn't come to that,
• 1:56:35
Speaker 1: Alice hastily said, hoping to keep him from beginning. The
• 1:56:39
Speaker 1: piece I'm going to repeat, he went on, without noticing
• 1:56:43
Speaker 1: her remark was written entirely for your amusement. Alice felt
• 1:56:49
Speaker 1: that in that case, she really ought to listen to it,
• 1:56:52
Speaker 1: so she sat down and said thank you, rather sadly.
• 1:56:56
Speaker 1: In winter, when the fields are white, I sing this
• 1:57:00
Speaker 1: song for your delight. Only I don't sing it, he added,
• 1:57:04
Speaker 1: as an explanation. I see you don't, said Alice. If
• 1:57:09
Speaker 1: you could see whether I'm singing or not, you've sharper
• 1:57:12
Speaker 1: eyes the most. Humpty Dumpty remarked severely. In spring, when
• 1:57:17
Speaker 1: woods are getting green, I'll try and tell you what
• 1:57:20
Speaker 1: I mean. Thank you very much, said Alice. In summer,
• 1:57:26
Speaker 1: when the days are long, perhaps you'll understand the song.
• 1:57:29
Speaker 1: In autumn, when the leaves are brown, take pen and
• 1:57:32
Speaker 1: ink and write it down. I will if I can
• 1:57:36
Speaker 1: remember it so long, said Alice. You needn't go on
• 1:57:40
Speaker 1: making remarks like that. Humpty Dumpty said, they're not sensible,
• 1:57:44
Speaker 1: and they put me out. I sent a message to
• 1:57:47
Speaker 1: the fish. I told them, this is what I wish
• 1:57:51
Speaker 1: the little fishes of the sea. They sent an answer
• 1:57:54
Speaker 1: back to me. The little fish's answer was, we cannot
• 1:57:58
Speaker 1: do it, sir, because us I'm afraid I don't quite understand,
• 1:58:03
Speaker 1: said Alice. It gets easier further on. Humpty Dumpty replied,
• 1:58:08
Speaker 1: I sent it to them again to say it will
• 1:58:11
Speaker 1: be better to obey. The fishes answered with a grin.
• 1:58:16
Speaker 1: Why what a temper you are in? I told them once,
• 1:58:20
Speaker 1: I told them twice, they would not listen to advice.
• 1:58:24
Speaker 1: I took a kettle, large and new, fit for the
• 1:58:27
Speaker 1: deed I had to do. My heart went hop, my
• 1:58:31
Speaker 1: heart went thump. I filled the kettle at the pump.
• 1:58:35
Speaker 1: Then some one came to me and said, the little
• 1:58:38
Speaker 1: fishes are in bed. I said to him, I said
• 1:58:40
Speaker 1: it plain, Then you must wake them up again. I
• 1:58:44
Speaker 1: said it very loud and clear. I went and shouted
• 1:58:47
Speaker 1: in his ear. Humpty Dumpty raised his voice almost to
• 1:58:52
Speaker 1: a scream as he repeated this verse, and Alice thought,
• 1:58:56
Speaker 1: with a shudder, I wouldn't have been the messenger for
• 1:58:59
Speaker 1: any But he was very stiff and proud. He said,
• 1:59:04
Speaker 1: you needn't shout so loud. And he was very proud
• 1:59:09
Speaker 1: and stiff. He said, I'd go and wake them if
• 1:59:14
Speaker 1: I took a corkscrew from the shelf. I went to
• 1:59:18
Speaker 1: wake them up and myself. And when I found the
• 1:59:21
Speaker 1: door was locked, I pulled and pushed and kicked and knocked.
• 1:59:25
Speaker 1: And when I found the door was shut, I tried
• 1:59:28
Speaker 1: to turn the handle, but there was a long pause.
• 1:59:34
  Speaker 2: Is that all?
• 1:59:35
Speaker 1: Alice timidly asked, that's all, said Humpty Dumpty.
• 1:59:39
  Speaker 2: Good bye.
• 1:59:40
Speaker 1: This was rather sudden, Alice thought, But after such a
• 1:59:44
Speaker 1: very strong hint that she ought to be going, she
• 1:59:47
Speaker 1: felt that it would hardly be civil to stay, so
• 1:59:50
Speaker 1: she got up and held out her hand. Good Bye.
• 1:59:53
Speaker 1: Do we meet again, she said, as cheerfully as she could.
• 1:59:58
Speaker 1: I shouldn't know you again if we didn't eat, Humpty
• 2:00:01
Speaker 1: Dumpty replied in a disconcerted tone, giving her one of
• 2:00:04
Speaker 1: his fingers to shake. You're all so exactly like other people.
• 2:00:08
Speaker 1: The face is what one goes by generally, Alice remarked,
• 2:00:12
Speaker 1: in a thoughtful tone. That's just what I complain of,
• 2:00:16
Speaker 1: said Humpty Dumpty. Your face is the same as everybody
• 2:00:19
Speaker 1: has the two eyes so marking their places in the
• 2:00:24
Speaker 1: air with his thumb, nose in the middle, mouth under
• 2:00:28
Speaker 1: it's all the same. Now, if you had the two
• 2:00:31
Speaker 1: eyes on the same side of the nose, for instance,
• 2:00:34
Speaker 1: or the mouth at the top, that would be some help.
• 2:00:38
Speaker 1: It wouldn't look nice. Alice objected, but Humpty Dumpty only
• 2:00:42
Speaker 1: shut his eyes and said, wait till you tried. Alice
• 2:00:46
Speaker 1: waited a minute to see if he would speak again,
• 2:00:49
Speaker 1: but as he never opened his eyes or took any
• 2:00:52
Speaker 1: further notice of her, she said goodbye once more, and
• 2:00:56
Speaker 1: getting no answer to this, she quietly walked away. But
• 2:01:00
Speaker 1: she couldn't help saying to herself as she went on,
• 2:01:02
Speaker 1: of all the unsatisfactory. She repeated this aloud, as it
• 2:01:07
Speaker 1: was a great comfort to have such a long word
• 2:01:10
Speaker 1: to say, of all the unsatisfactory people I ever met.
• 2:01:15
Speaker 1: She never finished the sentence, for at this moment a
• 2:01:19
Speaker 1: heavy crash shook the forest from end to end end
• 2:01:26
Speaker 1: of Chapter six, Chapter seven, The Lion and the Unicorn.
• 2:01:33
Speaker 1: The next moment, soldiers came running through the wood, at
• 2:01:37
Speaker 1: first in twos and threes, then in ten or twenty together,
• 2:01:42
Speaker 1: and at last in such crowds that they seemed to
• 2:01:45
Speaker 1: fill the whole forest. Alice got behind a tree for
• 2:01:49
Speaker 1: fear of being run over, and watched them go by.
• 2:01:53
Speaker 1: She thought that in all her life she had never
• 2:01:56
Speaker 1: seen soldiers so uncertain on their feet. They were all
• 2:02:00
Speaker 1: tripping over something or other, and whenever one went down,
• 2:02:04
Speaker 1: several more always fell over him, so that the ground
• 2:02:07
Speaker 1: was soon covered with little heaps of men. Then came
• 2:02:11
Speaker 1: the horses, having four feet, these managed rather better than
• 2:02:15
Speaker 1: the foot soldiers, but even they stumbled now and then,
• 2:02:18
Speaker 1: and it seemed to be a regular rule that whenever
• 2:02:21
Speaker 1: a horse stumbled, the rider fell off instantly. The confusion
• 2:02:26
Speaker 1: got worse every moment, and Alice was very glad to
• 2:02:30
Speaker 1: get out of the wood into an open place, where
• 2:02:33
Speaker 1: she found the White King seated on the ground, busily
• 2:02:37
Speaker 1: writing in his memorandum book, I have sent the ball,
• 2:02:41
Speaker 1: the King cried in a tone of delight on seeing Alice.
• 2:02:45
Speaker 1: Did you happen to meet any soldiers, my dear, as
• 2:02:49
Speaker 1: you came through the road. Yes, I did, said Alice.
• 2:02:54
Speaker 1: Several thousand, I should think five thousand, two hundred dah
• 2:03:00
Speaker 1: and seven nah. That's the exact number, the king said,
• 2:03:05
Speaker 1: referring to his book. I couldn't send all the horses,
• 2:03:09
Speaker 1: you know, because two of them are wanted in the game,
• 2:03:12
Speaker 1: and I haven't sent the two messengers either. They're both
• 2:03:17
Speaker 1: gone to the town. Just look, alove the road and
• 2:03:20
Speaker 1: tell me if you can see either of them. I
• 2:03:23
Speaker 1: see nobody on the road, said Alice. I only wish
• 2:03:27
Speaker 1: I had such eyes, the king remarked, in a fretful tone,
• 2:03:32
Speaker 1: to be able to see nobody, and all that distance too. Why,
• 2:03:38
Speaker 1: it's as much as I can do to see real
• 2:03:40
Speaker 1: people by this light. All this was lost on Alice,
• 2:03:45
Speaker 1: who was still looking intently along the road, shading her
• 2:03:48
Speaker 1: eyes with one hand. I see somebody now, she exclaimed
• 2:03:53
Speaker 1: at last, But he's coming very slowly. In what curious
• 2:03:57
Speaker 1: attitudes he goes into The messenger kept skipping up and
• 2:04:02
Speaker 1: down and wriggling like an eel. As he came along
• 2:04:05
Speaker 1: with his great hands spread out like fans on either side.
• 2:04:11
Speaker 1: Not at all, said the king. He's an Anglo Saxon messenger,
• 2:04:17
Speaker 1: and those are Anglo Saxon attitudes. He only does them
• 2:04:21
Speaker 1: when he's happy. His names. His name is Hagar. He
• 2:04:27
Speaker 1: pronounced it so as to rhyme with maya. I love
• 2:04:31
Speaker 1: my love with an H. Alice couldn't help beginning because
• 2:04:35
Speaker 1: he's happy. I hate him with an h because he
• 2:04:38
Speaker 1: is hideous. I fed him with with with ham, sandwiches
• 2:04:44
Speaker 1: and hay. His name is Hagar, and he lives, He
• 2:04:50
Speaker 1: lives and a hill. The King remarked, simply, without the
• 2:04:54
Speaker 1: least idea that he was joining in the game, while
• 2:04:57
Speaker 1: Alice was still hesitating for the name of a town
• 2:04:59
Speaker 1: beginning with h They are that messengers called Hatta. I
• 2:05:05
Speaker 1: must have two, you know, to come and to go,
• 2:05:08
Speaker 1: one to come and one to go. I beg your pardon,
• 2:05:13
Speaker 1: said Alice. It isn't respectable to beg, said the king.
• 2:05:18
Speaker 1: I only meant that, I didn't understand, said Alice. Why
• 2:05:21
Speaker 1: one to come and one to go? Didn't I tell you?
• 2:05:25
Speaker 1: The King repeated impatiently. I must have two to fetch
• 2:05:29
Speaker 1: and carry, Why fetch and one to carry? At this
• 2:05:34
Speaker 1: moment the messenger arrived, he was far too much out
• 2:05:38
Speaker 1: of breath to say a word, and could only wave
• 2:05:40
Speaker 1: his hands about and make the most fearful faces of
• 2:05:43
Speaker 1: the poor king. This young lady loves you with an
• 2:05:47
Speaker 1: h the King said, introducing Alice, in the hope of
• 2:05:51
Speaker 1: turning off the messenger's attention from himself.
• 2:05:54
Speaker 2: But it was no use.
• 2:05:56
Speaker 1: The Anglo Saxon attitudes only got more extraordinary every moment,
• 2:06:01
Speaker 1: while the great eyes rolled wildly from side to side.
• 2:06:06
Speaker 1: You alarm me, said the King, I feel faint. Give
• 2:06:10
Speaker 1: me a ham sandwich, at which the messenger, to Alice's
• 2:06:15
Speaker 1: great amusement, opened a bag that hang around his neck
• 2:06:19
Speaker 1: and handed a sandwich to the King, who devoured it
• 2:06:22
Speaker 1: greedily and had a sandwich, said the King. There is
• 2:06:26
Speaker 1: nothing but hay left now, the messenger said, peeping into
• 2:06:30
Speaker 1: the bag, hay. Then the King murmured in a faint whisper.
• 2:06:36
Speaker 1: Alice was glad to see that it revived him a
• 2:06:39
Speaker 1: great deal. There's nothing like eating hay when you're faint,
• 2:06:45
Speaker 1: he remarked to her, as he munched away. I should
• 2:06:49
Speaker 1: think throwing cold water over you would be better, Alice suggested,
• 2:06:54
Speaker 1: or some sal volatile I didn't say there was nothing better, ah,
• 2:07:01
Speaker 1: the King replied, I said there was nothing like it,
• 2:07:05
Speaker 1: which Alice did not venture to denigh. Who did you
• 2:07:10
Speaker 1: pass on the road? The King went on, holding out
• 2:07:13
Speaker 1: his hand to the messenger for some more Hay, nobody,
• 2:07:18
Speaker 1: said the messenger. Quite right, said the king. This young
• 2:07:23
Speaker 1: lady saw him too, so of course nobody walks slower
• 2:07:27
Speaker 1: than you. I do my best, the messenger said, in
• 2:07:32
Speaker 1: a sulky tone. I'm sure nobody walks much faster than
• 2:07:36
Speaker 1: I do. He can't do that, said the king, or
• 2:07:41
Speaker 1: else he'd have been here fast. However, now you've got
• 2:07:45
Speaker 1: your breath, you may tell us what's happened in the town.
• 2:07:50
Speaker 1: All whisper, it said the messenger, putting his hands to
• 2:07:53
Speaker 1: his mouth in the shape of a trumpet and stooping
• 2:07:56
Speaker 1: so as to get close to the king's ear. Alice
• 2:08:00
Speaker 1: was sorry for this, as she wanted to hear the
• 2:08:03
Speaker 1: news soon. However, instead of whispering, he simply shouted at
• 2:08:07
Speaker 1: the top of his voice, they're at it again, dear
• 2:08:13
Speaker 1: car That a whisper, cried the poor king, jumping up
• 2:08:18
Speaker 1: and shaking himself. If you do such a thing again,
• 2:08:22
Speaker 1: I'll have you battered. It went through and through my
• 2:08:25
Speaker 1: head like an earthquake. It would have to be a
• 2:08:29
Speaker 1: very tiny earthquake, thought Alice. Who are at it again?
• 2:08:35
Speaker 1: She ventured to ask why the lion and the unicorn?
• 2:08:39
Speaker 1: Of course, said the king, fighting for the crown. Yes,
• 2:08:44
Speaker 1: to be sure, said the king. And the best of
• 2:08:48
Speaker 1: the joke is that it's my crown. All the while,
• 2:08:53
Speaker 1: let's run and see them. And they trotted off, Alice,
• 2:08:57
Speaker 1: repeating to herself as she ran the words of the
• 2:09:00
Speaker 1: old song. The lion and the unicorn were fighting for
• 2:09:05
Speaker 1: the crown. The lion beat the unicorn all around the town.
• 2:09:11
Speaker 1: Some gave them white bread, some gave them brown, some
• 2:09:15
Speaker 1: gave them plum cake, and drummed them out of town.
• 2:09:20
Speaker 1: Does the one that winds get the crown? She asked,
• 2:09:25
Speaker 1: as well as she could, for the run was putting
• 2:09:28
Speaker 1: her quite out of breath. Dear me, no, said the king,
• 2:09:33
Speaker 1: what an idea? Would you be good enough? Alice panted out,
• 2:09:40
Speaker 1: after running a little further, to stop a minute, just
• 2:09:44
Speaker 1: to get one's breath again. I'm good enough, the king said,
• 2:09:50
Speaker 1: Only I'm not strong enough. You see, a minute goes
• 2:09:54
Speaker 1: by so fearfully quick you might as well try to
• 2:09:58
Speaker 1: stop a bandersnat. Alice had no more breath for talking,
• 2:10:04
Speaker 1: so they trotted on in silence till they came in
• 2:10:07
Speaker 1: sight of a great crowd in the middle of which
• 2:10:09
Speaker 1: the lion and the unicorn were fighting. They were in
• 2:10:12
Speaker 1: such a cloud of dust that at first Alice could
• 2:10:16
Speaker 1: not make out which was witch, but she soon managed
• 2:10:20
Speaker 1: to distinguish the unicorn by his horn. They placed themselves
• 2:10:24
Speaker 1: close to where hattera, the other messenger, who was standing
• 2:10:28
Speaker 1: watching the fight, with a cup of tea in one
• 2:10:30
Speaker 1: hand and a piece of bread and butter in the other.
• 2:10:34
Speaker 1: He's only just out in prison, and he hasn't finished
• 2:10:38
Speaker 1: his tea when he was sent in, Haca mentioned to Alice.
• 2:10:42
Speaker 1: And they only give them oyster shells in there, so
• 2:10:45
Speaker 1: you see, he's very hungry and thirsty, are you, dear child?
• 2:10:50
Speaker 1: He went on, putting his arm affectionately round Hatter's neck.
• 2:10:56
Speaker 1: Hatter looked round and nodded, and went on with his bread.
• 2:10:59
Speaker 1: And were you have you in prison, dear child, said Haka.
• 2:11:05
Speaker 1: Hatter looked around once more, and this time a tear
• 2:11:10
Speaker 1: or two trickled down his cheek, but not a word
• 2:11:13
Speaker 1: would he say. Speak can't you? Hacer cried impatiently, but
• 2:11:19
Speaker 1: Hatta only munched away and drank some more tea.
• 2:11:24
  Speaker 2: Speak, won't you?
• 2:11:26
Speaker 1: Cried the king? How are they getting on with their fight?
• 2:11:30
Speaker 1: Hatter made a desperate effort and swallowed a large piece
• 2:11:34
Speaker 1: of bread and butter. They're getting on very well, he said,
• 2:11:39
Speaker 1: in a choking voice. Each of them has been down
• 2:11:42
Speaker 1: about eighty seven times. Then, I suppose they'll soon bring
• 2:11:46
Speaker 1: the white bread and brown Alice ventured to remark, it's
• 2:11:50
Speaker 1: waiting for him. Now, said Hatta, this is a bit
• 2:11:55
Speaker 1: of it I'm eating.
• 2:11:58
Speaker 2: There was a pause in.
• 2:11:58
Speaker 1: The fight just then, and the lion of the unicorn
• 2:12:02
Speaker 1: sat down panting, while the king called out tad minutes
• 2:12:06
Speaker 1: allowed for refreshments. Hagar and Hatta set to work at once,
• 2:12:12
Speaker 1: carrying rough trays of white and brown bread. Alice took
• 2:12:16
Speaker 1: a piece to taste, but it was very dry. I
• 2:12:20
Speaker 1: don't thank del fade any more to day, the king
• 2:12:24
Speaker 1: said to Hatta, go and order their drums to begin,
• 2:12:29
Speaker 1: and Hatta went bounding away like a grasshopper. For a
• 2:12:33
Speaker 1: minute or two, Alice stood silent watching him. Suddenly she
• 2:12:37
Speaker 1: brightened up. Look, look, she cried, pointing eagerly. There's the
• 2:12:42
Speaker 1: white queen running across the country. She came, flying out
• 2:12:46
Speaker 1: of the woods over yonder. How fast these queens can run.
• 2:12:52
Speaker 1: There's some enemy after her, no doubt, the King said,
• 2:12:56
Speaker 1: without even looking around That woods follow. But aren't you
• 2:13:01
Speaker 1: going to run and help her? Alice asked, very much
• 2:13:05
Speaker 1: surprised at he's taking it all so quietly. No use,
• 2:13:09
Speaker 1: No use, said the king. She ran so fearfully quick,
• 2:13:15
Speaker 1: you might as well try to catch a bandersnatch. But
• 2:13:19
Speaker 1: I'll make a memorandum about her if you like. She
• 2:13:23
Speaker 1: is a dear good creature, he repeated softly to himself,
• 2:13:28
Speaker 1: as he opened his memorandum book. Do you spell creature
• 2:13:34
Speaker 1: with a double e? At this moment, the unicorn sorted
• 2:13:39
Speaker 1: by them with his hands in his pockets.
• 2:13:42
Speaker 2: I had the best of it this time.
• 2:13:45
Speaker 1: He said to the king, just glancing at him as
• 2:13:47
Speaker 1: he passed. And little and little, the King replied, rather nervously.
• 2:13:53
Speaker 1: You shouldn't have rudim through with your heart. You know
• 2:13:57
Speaker 1: it didn't hurt him, the unicorn said, carelessly, And he
• 2:14:02
Speaker 1: was going on when his eye happened to fall upon Alice.
• 2:14:06
Speaker 1: He turned round rather instantly and stood for some time,
• 2:14:11
Speaker 1: looking at her with an air of the deepest disgust.
• 2:14:15
  Speaker 2: What is this?
• 2:14:17
Speaker 1: He said? At last, this is a child, Hager replied, eagerly,
• 2:14:23
Speaker 1: coming out in front of Alice to introduce her, and
• 2:14:26
Speaker 1: spreading out both his hands towards her in an Anglo
• 2:14:29
Speaker 1: Saxon attitude. We only found it to day. It's as
• 2:14:34
Speaker 1: large as life and twice as natural. I always thought
• 2:14:39
Speaker 1: they were fabulous monsters, said the unicorn. Is it alive?
• 2:14:44
Speaker 1: It could talk? Said Hager solemnly. The unicorn looked dreamily
• 2:14:50
Speaker 1: at Alice and said talk child. Alice could not help
• 2:14:55
Speaker 1: her lips curling up into a smile as she began.
• 2:14:58
Speaker 1: Do you know I always thought unicorns were fabulous monsters too.
• 2:15:04
Speaker 1: I never saw one alive before. Well, now that we
• 2:15:09
Speaker 1: both have seen each other, said the unicorn. If you
• 2:15:13
Speaker 1: believe in me, I'll believe in you. Is that a bargain, Yes,
• 2:15:17
Speaker 1: if you like, said Alice. Come fetch out the plum cake,
• 2:15:21
Speaker 1: old man. The unicorn went on, turning from herd of
• 2:15:25
Speaker 1: the king. None of your brown bread for me, sad
• 2:15:29
Speaker 1: hen Ley, Sadley, The king muttered and beckoned to Hagar.
• 2:15:34
Speaker 1: O'll bend that bag, he whispered, quick that that when
• 2:15:38
Speaker 1: it's full of hay. Hagar took a large cake out
• 2:15:43
Speaker 1: of the bag and gave it to Alice to hold
• 2:15:45
Speaker 1: while he got out a dish and a carving knife.
• 2:15:49
Speaker 1: How they all came out of it? Alice couldn't guess.
• 2:15:53
Speaker 1: It was like a conjuring trick. She thought the lion
• 2:15:56
Speaker 1: had joined them while this was going on. He looked
• 2:16:00
Speaker 1: very tired and sleepy, and his eyes were half shut.
• 2:16:04
  Speaker 2: What's this?
• 2:16:06
Speaker 1: He said, blinking lazily at Alice and speaking in a deep,
• 2:16:10
Speaker 1: hollow tone that sounded like the tolling of a large bell.
• 2:16:15
Speaker 2: Ah, what is it now?
• 2:16:17
Speaker 1: The unicorn cried eagerly. Y'a'll never guess, I couldn't. The
• 2:16:23
Speaker 1: lion looked at Alice wearily.
• 2:16:25
Speaker 2: Oh you aedible, vegetable or mineral.
• 2:16:31
Speaker 1: He said, yawning at every word. It's a fabulous monster,
• 2:16:36
Speaker 1: the unicorn cried out, before Alice could reply.
• 2:16:41
Speaker 2: Then, hond roam the plum cake.
• 2:16:44
Speaker 1: Monster, the lion said, lying down and putting his chin
• 2:16:49
Speaker 1: on his paws, and sit down, both of your to
• 2:16:53
Speaker 1: the king and the unicorn, play fair with the cake,
• 2:16:57
Speaker 1: you know, The king was avidently very uncomfortable at having
• 2:17:02
Speaker 1: to sit down between the two great creatures, but there
• 2:17:05
Speaker 1: was no other place for him. What a fight we
• 2:17:08
Speaker 1: might have had for the crown now, the unicorn said,
• 2:17:12
Speaker 1: looking slyly up at the crown, which the poor king
• 2:17:15
Speaker 1: was nearly shaking off his head. He trembled so much.
• 2:17:20
Speaker 1: I should win easily, said the lion. I'm not so
• 2:17:25
Speaker 1: sure of that, said the unicorn. Why I beat you
• 2:17:30
Speaker 1: all round the town, you chicken, the lion replied angrily,
• 2:17:35
Speaker 1: half getting up as he spoke. Here the king interrupted
• 2:17:40
Speaker 1: to prevent the quarrel going on. He was very nervous,
• 2:17:43
Speaker 1: and his voice quite quivered. All around the town. He said,
• 2:17:49
Speaker 1: that's that's a good long way. Did you go by
• 2:17:52
Speaker 1: the old bridge? Oh? The market place? You get the
• 2:17:56
Speaker 1: very best of you by the old bridge.
• 2:18:00
  Speaker 2: I'm sure I don't know.
• 2:18:03
Speaker 1: The lion growled out. As he lay down again. There
• 2:18:07
Speaker 1: was too much dust to see anything. What a time
• 2:18:13
Speaker 1: the monster is copting up that cake. Alice had seated
• 2:18:18
Speaker 1: herself on the bank of a little brook with the
• 2:18:21
Speaker 1: great Dish on her knees, and was soaring away diligently
• 2:18:25
Speaker 1: with the knife. It's very provoking, she said in reply
• 2:18:29
Speaker 1: to the lion. She was getting quite used to being
• 2:18:32
Speaker 1: called the monster. I've cut several slices already, but they
• 2:18:37
Speaker 1: always join on again. You don't know how to manage
• 2:18:41
Speaker 1: looking glass cakes, the unicorn remarked, hand it round first,
• 2:18:48
Speaker 1: and cut it off towards This sounded nonsense, but Alice
• 2:18:53
Speaker 1: very obediently got up and carried the dish round, and
• 2:18:57
Speaker 1: the cake divided itself into three pieces as she did so.
• 2:19:01
Speaker 1: No cut it up, said the lion, as she returned
• 2:19:05
Speaker 1: to her place with the empty dish. I'd say this
• 2:19:09
Speaker 1: isn't fair, cried the unicorn, as Alice sat with the
• 2:19:13
Speaker 1: knife in her hand, very much puzzled how to begin.
• 2:19:18
Speaker 1: The monster has given the lion twice as much as
• 2:19:21
Speaker 1: me shoes kept none of herself anyhow, said the lion.
• 2:19:28
Speaker 1: Do you like plum cake? Monster? But before Alice could
• 2:19:34
Speaker 1: answer him, the drums began. Where the noise came from,
• 2:19:38
Speaker 1: she couldn't make out. The air seemed full of it,
• 2:19:41
Speaker 1: and it ran through and through her head till she
• 2:19:45
Speaker 1: felt quite deafened. She started to her feet and sprang
• 2:19:49
Speaker 1: across the little brook in her terror, and had just
• 2:19:52
Speaker 1: time to see the Lion and the unicorn rise to
• 2:19:55
Speaker 1: their feet with angry looks at being interrupted in their feasts,
• 2:20:00
Speaker 1: before she dropped to her knees and put her hands
• 2:20:03
Speaker 1: over her ears, vainly trying to shut out the dreadful uproar.
• 2:20:09
Speaker 1: If that doesn't drum them out of town, she thought
• 2:20:13
Speaker 1: to herself, nothing ever will. End of chapter seven, chapter eight,
• 2:20:23
Speaker 1: it's my own invention. After a while, the noise seemed
• 2:20:27
Speaker 1: gradually to die away, till all was dead silence, and
• 2:20:31
Speaker 1: Alice lifted up her head in some alarm. There was
• 2:20:34
Speaker 1: no one to be seen, and her first thought was
• 2:20:37
Speaker 1: that she must have been dreaming about the lion and
• 2:20:39
Speaker 1: the unicorn and those queer Anglo Saxon messages. However, there
• 2:20:45
Speaker 1: was the great dish still lying at her feet on
• 2:20:48
Speaker 1: which she had tried to cut the plum cake. So
• 2:20:52
Speaker 1: I wasn't dreaming after all, she said to herself. Ah,
• 2:20:56
Speaker 1: unless unless we're all part of the same dream. Only
• 2:21:00
Speaker 1: I do hope it's my dream and not the Red King's.
• 2:21:03
Speaker 1: I don't like belonging to another person's dream, she went on,
• 2:21:08
Speaker 1: in rather a complaining tone. I've got a great mind
• 2:21:11
Speaker 1: to go and wake him and see what happens. At
• 2:21:15
Speaker 1: this moment, her thoughts were interrupted by a loud shouting
• 2:21:18
  Speaker 1: of a hoy a hoi check, and a knight, a
• 2:21:22
Speaker 1: dressed in crimson armor, came galloping down upon her, brandishing
• 2:21:27
Speaker 1: a great club. Just as he reached her, the horse stopped. Suddenly,
• 2:21:32
Speaker 1: you're my prisoner, the knight cried, as he tumbled off
• 2:21:36
Speaker 1: his horse. Startled as she was, Alice was more frightened
• 2:21:40
Speaker 1: for him than for herself at the moment, and watched
• 2:21:43
Speaker 1: him with some anxiety as he mounted again. As soon
• 2:21:46
Speaker 1: as he was comfortably in the saddle, he began once more,
• 2:21:50
Speaker 1: you're my But here another voice broke in, O hoy, hoy, check,
• 2:21:55
Speaker 1: and Alice looked round in some surprise for the new enemy.
• 2:22:00
Speaker 1: This time it was a white knight. He drew up
• 2:22:03
Speaker 1: at Alice's side and tumbled off his horse, just as
• 2:22:06
Speaker 1: the Red Knight had done. Then he got on again,
• 2:22:10
Speaker 1: and the two knights sat and looked at each other
• 2:22:12
Speaker 1: for some time without speaking. Alice looked from one to
• 2:22:16
Speaker 1: the other in some bewilderment. She's my prisoner, you know,
• 2:22:21
Speaker 1: the Red Knight said. At last, yes, But that I
• 2:22:24
Speaker 1: came and rescued her. The white knight replied, well, we
• 2:22:29
Speaker 1: must fight for her. Then, as he took up his helmet,
• 2:22:32
Speaker 1: which hung from the saddle and was something in the
• 2:22:35
Speaker 1: shape of a horse's head, and put it on, you
• 2:22:38
  Speaker 1: will observe.
• 2:22:39
Speaker 2: The rules of battle, of course.
• 2:22:41
Speaker 1: The white knight remarked, putting on his helmet too. I
• 2:22:45
Speaker 1: always do, said the Red knight, and they began banging
• 2:22:49
Speaker 1: away at each other with such fury that Alice got
• 2:22:52
Speaker 1: behind a tree to be out of the way of
• 2:22:54
Speaker 1: the blows. I wonder now what the rules of battle are,
• 2:22:58
Speaker 1: she said to herself, as she watched the fight timidly
• 2:23:02
Speaker 1: peeping from her hiding place. One rule seems to be
• 2:23:06
Speaker 1: that if one knight hits the other, he knocks him
• 2:23:09
Speaker 1: off his horse, and if he misses, he tumbles off himself.
• 2:23:13
Speaker 1: And another rule seems to be that they hold their
• 2:23:16
Speaker 1: clubs with their arms as if they were punch and judy.
• 2:23:20
Speaker 1: What a noise they make when they tumble, just like
• 2:23:23
Speaker 1: a whole set of fire irons falling into the fender.
• 2:23:27
Speaker 1: And how quiet the horses are. They let them get
• 2:23:30
Speaker 1: on and off just as they were tables. Another rule
• 2:23:34
Speaker 1: of battle that Alice had noticed seemed to be that
• 2:23:37
Speaker 1: they always fell on their heads, and the battle ended.
• 2:23:40
Speaker 1: And the battle ended with their both falling off in
• 2:23:43
Speaker 1: this way, side by side. When they got up again,
• 2:23:46
Speaker 1: they shook hands, and then the Red Knight mounted and
• 2:23:49
Speaker 1: galloped off. It was a glorious victory, wasn't it, said
• 2:23:55
Speaker 1: the White Knight, as he came up, panting. Ah, I
• 2:23:58
Speaker 1: don't know, Alice said, doubtfully. I don't want to be
• 2:24:02
  Speaker 1: anybody's prisoner. I want to be a queen. So you're
• 2:24:06
Speaker 1: well when you've crossed the next brook, said the White Knight.
• 2:24:10
Speaker 1: I'll see you're safe to the end of the wood,
• 2:24:13
Speaker 1: and then I must go back. You know that's the
• 2:24:16
Speaker 1: end of my move. Thank you very much, said Alice.
• 2:24:20
Speaker 1: May I help you off with your helmet? It was
• 2:24:23
Speaker 1: evidently more than he could manage by himself. However, she
• 2:24:26
Speaker 1: managed to shake him out of it. At last. No
• 2:24:30
Speaker 1: one could breathe more easily, said the Knight, putting back
• 2:24:34
Speaker 1: his shaggy hair with both hands and turning his gentle
• 2:24:37
Speaker 1: face and large, mild eyes to Alice. She thought she
• 2:24:42
Speaker 1: had never seen such a strange looking soldier in all
• 2:24:45
Speaker 1: her life. He was dressed in tin armor, which seemed
• 2:24:48
Speaker 1: to fit him very badly, and he had a queer
• 2:24:51
Speaker 1: shaped little deal box that fastened across his shoulder, upside down,
• 2:24:56
Speaker 1: with the lid hanging open. Alice looked at it with
• 2:25:00
Speaker 1: great curiosity. I see you are admiring my little box,
• 2:25:05
Speaker 1: the knight said, in a friendly tone. It's my own
• 2:25:08
Speaker 1: invention to keep clothes and sandwiches in. You see. I
• 2:25:12
Speaker 1: carry it upside down so that the rain can't get in,
• 2:25:17
Speaker 1: but the things can get out. Alice gently remarked, do
• 2:25:22
Speaker 1: you know the lids open? I didn't know it, the
• 2:25:27
Speaker 1: knight said, in a shade of vexation passing over his face.
• 2:25:31
Speaker 1: Then all things must have fallen out, and the box
• 2:25:35
Speaker 1: is no use without them. He unfastened it as he spoke,
• 2:25:39
Speaker 1: and was just going to throw it into the bushes,
• 2:25:41
Speaker 1: when a sudden thought seemed to strike him, and he
• 2:25:44
Speaker 1: hung it carefully on a tree.
• 2:25:47
Speaker 2: Can you guess why I did that.
• 2:25:50
Speaker 1: He said to Alice. Alice shook her head in hopes
• 2:25:54
Speaker 1: some bees may make a nest in it. Then I
• 2:25:57
Speaker 1: should get the honey. You've got a beehive or something
• 2:26:02
Speaker 1: like one fastened to the saddle, said Alice. Yes, it's
• 2:26:07
Speaker 1: a very good beehive. The knight said, in a discontented tone,
• 2:26:11
Speaker 1: one of the best kind. But not a single bee
• 2:26:15
Speaker 1: has come near it yet. And the other thing is
• 2:26:18
Speaker 1: a mouse trap. I suppose the mice keep the bees out,
• 2:26:21
Speaker 1: or the bees keep the mice out. I don't know which.
• 2:26:25
Speaker 1: I was wondering what the mouse trap was for, said Alice.
• 2:26:29
Speaker 1: It isn't very likely there would be any mice on
• 2:26:32
Speaker 1: the horse's back. Not very likely, perhaps, said the knight.
• 2:26:37
Speaker 1: But if they do come, I don't choose to have
• 2:26:40
Speaker 1: them running all about, you see, he went on, after
• 2:26:44
Speaker 1: a pause. It's as well to be provided for everything.
• 2:26:49
Speaker 1: That's the reason the horse has all those anklets round
• 2:26:52
Speaker 1: his feet. But what are they for, Alice asked, in
• 2:26:57
Speaker 1: a tone of great curiosity, to God against the bites
• 2:27:01
Speaker 1: of sharks. The knight replied, it's an invention of my own.
• 2:27:06
Speaker 1: And now help me on. I'll go with you to
• 2:27:09
Speaker 1: the end of the wood. What's the dish for? It's
• 2:27:13
Speaker 1: meant for plum cake, said Alice. We'd better take it
• 2:27:17
Speaker 1: with us, the knight said. It'll come in handy if
• 2:27:20
Speaker 1: we find any plum cake. Help me get it into
• 2:27:24
Speaker 1: this bag. This took a very long time to manage,
• 2:27:28
Speaker 1: though Alice held the bag open very carefully, because the
• 2:27:31
Speaker 1: night was so very awkward in putting in the dish.
• 2:27:35
Speaker 1: The first two or three times that he tried, he
• 2:27:37
Speaker 1: fell in himself instead. It's rather a tight fit, you see,
• 2:27:43
Speaker 1: he said, as they got it in at last. There
• 2:27:46
Speaker 1: are so many candlesticks in the bag, and he hung
• 2:27:49
Speaker 1: it to the saddle, which was already loaded with bunches
• 2:27:52
Speaker 1: of carrots and fire irons and many other things. I
• 2:27:57
Speaker 1: hope you've got your hair well fastened on, he continued,
• 2:28:01
Speaker 1: as they set off, only in the usual way. Alice said, smiling.
• 2:28:06
Speaker 1: That's hardly enough, he said, anxiously. You'll see the wind
• 2:28:10
Speaker 1: is so very strong here. It's a struggle suit. Have
• 2:28:15
Speaker 1: you invented a plan for keeping the hair from being
• 2:28:17
Speaker 1: blown off? Alice inquired, Not yet, said the Knight. But
• 2:28:22
Speaker 1: I've got a plan for keeping it from falling off.
• 2:28:26
Speaker 1: I should like to hear it very much. First, you'll
• 2:28:30
Speaker 1: take it upright stick, said the Knight. Then you make
• 2:28:34
Speaker 1: your hair creep up it like a fruit tree. Now,
• 2:28:38
Speaker 1: the reason the hair falls off is because it hangs down.
• 2:28:42
Speaker 1: Things never fall upwards. You know. It's a plan of
• 2:28:45
Speaker 1: my own invention. You may try it if you like.
• 2:28:48
Speaker 1: It didn't sound a comfortable plan, Alice thought, and for
• 2:28:52
Speaker 1: a few minutes she walked on in silence, puzzling over
• 2:28:56
Speaker 1: the idea, and every now and then stopping to help
• 2:28:59
Speaker 1: the poor knight, who who certainly was not a good rider.
• 2:29:03
Speaker 1: Whenever the horse stopped, which it did very often, he
• 2:29:06
Speaker 1: fell off in front, and whenever it went on again,
• 2:29:10
Speaker 1: which it generally did rather suddenly, he fell off behind.
• 2:29:14
Speaker 1: Otherwise he kept on pretty well, except that he had
• 2:29:17
Speaker 1: a habit of now and then falling off sideways, and
• 2:29:20
Speaker 1: as he generally did this on the side on which
• 2:29:23
Speaker 1: Alice was walking, she soon found that it was the
• 2:29:25
Speaker 1: best plan not to walk quite close to the horse.
• 2:29:30
Speaker 1: I'm afraid you've not had much practice in riding, she
• 2:29:34
Speaker 1: ventured to say, as she was helping him up from
• 2:29:37
Speaker 1: his fifth tumble. The knight looked very much surprised and
• 2:29:41
Speaker 1: a little offended at the remark. What makes you say that,
• 2:29:45
Speaker 1: he asked, as he scrambled back into the saddle, keeping
• 2:29:48
Speaker 1: hold of Alice's hair with one hand to save himself
• 2:29:51
Speaker 1: from falling over on the other side. Because people don't
• 2:29:56
Speaker 1: fall off quite so often when they've had much practice. Oh,
• 2:30:00
Speaker 1: I've had plenty of practice, the Knight said, very gravely.
• 2:30:05
Speaker 1: Plenty of practice. Alice could think of nothing better to
• 2:30:09
Speaker 1: say than indeed, but she said it as heartily as
• 2:30:13
Speaker 1: she could. They went on a little way in silence
• 2:30:17
Speaker 1: after this, the Knight with his eyes shut, muttering to himself,
• 2:30:20
Speaker 1: and Alice watching anxiously for the next tumble. The great
• 2:30:25
Speaker 1: art of riding, the Knight suddenly began, in a loud voice,
• 2:30:30
Speaker 1: waving his right arm as he spoke, is to keep here.
• 2:30:34
Speaker 1: The sentence ended as suddenly as it had begun, as
• 2:30:37
Speaker 1: the Knight fell heavily on the top of his head,
• 2:30:40
Speaker 1: exactly in the path where Alice was walking. She was
• 2:30:43
Speaker 1: quite frightened this time, and said in an anxious tone
• 2:30:46
Speaker 1: as she picked him up. I hope no bones are broken,
• 2:30:50
Speaker 1: none to speak of, the Knight said, as if he
• 2:30:53
Speaker 1: didn't mind breaking two or three of them. The great
• 2:30:57
Speaker 1: art of riding, as I was saying, is to keep
• 2:31:00
Speaker 1: your balance properly like this, you know. He let go
• 2:31:04
Speaker 1: the bridle and stretched out both his arms to show
• 2:31:07
Speaker 1: Alice what he meant, and this time he fell flat
• 2:31:10
Speaker 1: on his back right under the horse's feet. Plenty of practice,
• 2:31:16
Speaker 1: he went on repeating all the time that Alice was
• 2:31:19
Speaker 1: getting him on his feet again. Plenty of practice. It's
• 2:31:23
Speaker 1: too ridiculous, cried Alice, losing all her patience this time.
• 2:31:28
Speaker 1: You ought to have a wooden horse on wheels that
• 2:31:31
Speaker 1: you ought? Does that kind go smoothly? The knight asked,
• 2:31:36
Speaker 1: in a tone of great interest, clasping his arms around
• 2:31:39
Speaker 1: the horse's neck as he spoke, just in time to
• 2:31:42
Speaker 1: save himself from tumbling off again. Much more smoothly than
• 2:31:45
Speaker 1: a live horse, Alice said, with a little scream of laughter,
• 2:31:50
Speaker 1: in spite of all she could do.
• 2:31:51
  Speaker 2: To prevent it.
• 2:31:52
Speaker 1: I'll get one, the knight said thoughtfully to himself, one
• 2:31:57
Speaker 1: or two several. There was a short silence after this,
• 2:32:01
Speaker 1: and then the Knight went on again. I'm a great
• 2:32:04
Speaker 1: hand at inventing things. Now, I dare say you noticed
• 2:32:08
Speaker 1: that last time you picked me up that I was
• 2:32:10
Speaker 1: looking rather thoughtful. You were a little grave, said Alice. Well,
• 2:32:17
Speaker 1: just then I was inventing a new way of getting
• 2:32:20
Speaker 1: over a gate. Would you like to hear it?
• 2:32:23
  Speaker 2: Very much?
• 2:32:23
Speaker 1: Indeed, Alice said politely. I'll tell you how I came
• 2:32:27
Speaker 1: to think of it, said the Knight. You see, I
• 2:32:30
Speaker 1: said to myself The only difficulty is with the feet.
• 2:32:34
Speaker 1: The head is high enough already. Now, First I put
• 2:32:39
Speaker 1: my head on the top of the gate, and then
• 2:32:41
Speaker 1: I stand on my head. Then the feet are high enough,
• 2:32:44
Speaker 1: you see. Then I'm over. You see. Yes, I suppose
• 2:32:48
Speaker 1: you'd be over when that was done, Alice said thoughtfully,
• 2:32:52
Speaker 1: But don't you think it would be rather hard? I
• 2:32:55
Speaker 1: haven't tried it yet, the knight said gravely. So I
• 2:32:59
Speaker 1: can't tell for certain, but I am afraid it would
• 2:33:03
Speaker 1: be a little hard. He looked so vexed at the
• 2:33:06
Speaker 1: idea that Alice changed the subject hastily. What a curious
• 2:33:10
Speaker 1: helmet you've got, she said, cheerfully. Is that your invention too?
• 2:33:14
Speaker 1: The knight looked down proudly at his helmet, which hung
• 2:33:17
Speaker 1: from the saddle. Yes, he said, but I'm invented a
• 2:33:21
Speaker 1: better one than that, like a sugar loaf. When I
• 2:33:25
Speaker 1: used to wear it, if I fell off the horse,
• 2:33:28
Speaker 1: it always touched the ground directly, so I had a
• 2:33:31
Speaker 1: very little way to fall, you see. But there was
• 2:33:34
Speaker 1: the danger of falling into it, to be sure. That
• 2:33:37
Speaker 1: happened to me once, and the worst of it was
• 2:33:40
Speaker 1: before I could get out again. The other white knight came.
• 2:33:43
Speaker 1: He thought it was his own helmet. The Knight looked
• 2:33:46
Speaker 1: so solemn about it that Alice did not dare to laugh.
• 2:33:51
Speaker 1: I am afraid you must have hurt him, she said,
• 2:33:54
Speaker 1: in a trembling voice, being on the top of his head.
• 2:33:58
Speaker 1: I had to kick him, of course, the knight said,
• 2:34:01
Speaker 1: very seriously, and then he took the helmet off again.
• 2:34:04
Speaker 1: But it took hours and hours to get me out.
• 2:34:07
Speaker 1: I was as fast as bloods lightning, you know. Ah,
• 2:34:11
Speaker 1: but that's a different kind of fastness, Alice objected. The
• 2:34:16
Speaker 1: knight shook his head. It was all kinds of fastness
• 2:34:20
Speaker 1: with me, I can assure you, he said. He raised
• 2:34:23
Speaker 1: his hand in some excitement as he said this, and
• 2:34:26
Speaker 1: instantly rolled out of the saddle and fell headlong into
• 2:34:30
Speaker 1: a deep ditch. Alice ran to the side of the
• 2:34:33
Speaker 1: ditch to look for him. She was rather startled by
• 2:34:36
Speaker 1: the fall, as for some time he had kept on
• 2:34:39
Speaker 1: very well, and she was afraid that he really was hurt.
• 2:34:42
Speaker 1: This time. However, though she could see nothing but the
• 2:34:46
Speaker 1: soles of his feet, she was much relieved to hear
• 2:34:48
Speaker 1: that he was talking on in his usual tone. All
• 2:34:51
Speaker 1: kinds of fastness, he repeated, but it was careless of
• 2:34:56
Speaker 1: him to put another man's helmet on. Oh, with the
• 2:34:58
Speaker 1: man in it too. How can you go on talking
• 2:35:02
Speaker 1: so quietly? Head downwards? Alice asked, as she dragged him
• 2:35:06
Speaker 1: out by the feet and laid him in a heap
• 2:35:08
Speaker 1: on the bank. The Knight looked surprised at the question.
• 2:35:12
Speaker 1: What does it matter where my body happens to be,
• 2:35:15
Speaker 1: he said, My mind goes on working all the same.
• 2:35:18
Speaker 1: In fact, the more head downwards I am, the more
• 2:35:22
Speaker 1: I keep inventing new things. Now, the cleverest thing of
• 2:35:26
Speaker 1: the sort that I ever did, he went on, after
• 2:35:29
Speaker 1: a pause, was inventing a new pudding during the meat course,
• 2:35:34
Speaker 1: in time to have it cooked for the next course,
• 2:35:38
Speaker 1: said Alice. Well not the next course, the Knight said
• 2:35:42
Speaker 1: in a slow, thoughtful tone. No, certainly, not the next course.
• 2:35:47
Speaker 1: Then it would have to be the next day. I
• 2:35:49
Speaker 1: suppose you wouldn't have two pudding courses in one dinner. Well,
• 2:35:53
Speaker 1: not the next day, the night repeated, as before, not
• 2:35:57
Speaker 1: the next day. In fact, he went on, holding his
• 2:36:01
Speaker 1: head down, in his voice getting lower and lower. I
• 2:36:04
Speaker 1: don't believe that pudding ever was cooked. In fact, I
• 2:36:09
Speaker 1: don't believe that pudding ever will be cooked. And yet
• 2:36:13
Speaker 1: it was a very clever pudding to invent. What did
• 2:36:17
Speaker 1: you mean it to be made of? Alice asked, hoping
• 2:36:20
Speaker 1: to cheer him up, for the poor knight seemed quite
• 2:36:23
Speaker 1: low spirited about it. It began with blotting paper, the
• 2:36:28
Speaker 1: knight answered with a groan. That wouldn't be very nice.
• 2:36:31
Speaker 1: I'm afraid no, not very nice alone, he interrupted, quite eagerly.
• 2:36:38
Speaker 1: But you've no idea what a difference it makes mixing
• 2:36:41
Speaker 1: it with other things, such as gunpowder and sealing wax.
• 2:36:45
Speaker 1: And here I must leave you. They had just come
• 2:36:48
Speaker 1: to the end of the wood. Alice could only look puzzled.
• 2:36:53
Speaker 1: She was thinking of the pudding. You are sad, the
• 2:36:57
Speaker 1: knight said, in an anxious tone. Let me see you
• 2:37:00
Speaker 1: a song to comfort you. Is it very long? Alice asked,
• 2:37:06
Speaker 1: for she had heard a good deal of poetry that day.
• 2:37:09
Speaker 1: It's long, said the knight, but very very beautiful. Everybody
• 2:37:14
Speaker 1: that hears me sing it either brings tears into their
• 2:37:18
Speaker 1: eyes or else, or else what said Alice, For the
• 2:37:22
Speaker 1: night had made a sudden pause, or else It doesn't
• 2:37:26
Speaker 1: you know the name of the song is called Haddock's Eyes.
• 2:37:31
Speaker 1: Oh that's the name of the song, is it, Alice said,
• 2:37:34
Speaker 1: trying to feel interested. No, you don't understand, the knight said,
• 2:37:38
Speaker 1: looking a little vexed, that's what the name is called.
• 2:37:43
Speaker 1: The name really is the aged aged man. Then I
• 2:37:48
Speaker 1: ought to have said that's what the song is called,
• 2:37:52
Speaker 1: Alice corrected herself. No, you oughtn't. That's quite another thing.
• 2:37:57
Speaker 1: The song is called ways and Means. But that's only
• 2:38:01
Speaker 1: what it's called. You know. Well, what is the song, then,
• 2:38:06
Speaker 1: said Alice, who was by this time completely bewildered. I
• 2:38:10
Speaker 1: was coming to that, the knight said. The song really
• 2:38:15
Speaker 1: is a sitting on a gate, and the tunes my
• 2:38:18
Speaker 1: own invention. So saying, he stopped his horse and let
• 2:38:21
Speaker 1: the reins fall on his neck, Then slowly beating time
• 2:38:25
Speaker 1: with one hand, and with a faint smile lighting up
• 2:38:28
Speaker 1: his gentle foolish face, as if he enjoyed the music
• 2:38:31
Speaker 1: of his song, he began. Of all the strange things
• 2:38:35
Speaker 1: that Alice saw on her journey through the looking glass,
• 2:38:39
Speaker 1: this was the one that she always remembered most clearly.
• 2:38:43
Speaker 1: Years afterwards, she could bring the whole scene back again,
• 2:38:46
Speaker 1: as if it had been only yesterday. The mild blue
• 2:38:49
Speaker 1: eyes and kindly smile of the night, the setting sun
• 2:38:53
Speaker 1: gleaming through his hair and shining on his armor in
• 2:38:56
Speaker 1: a blaze of light that quite dazzled her, the horse
• 2:39:00
Speaker 1: quietly moving about with the reins hanging loose on his neck,
• 2:39:03
Speaker 1: cropping the grass at her feet, and the black shadows
• 2:39:07
Speaker 1: of the forest behind. All this she took in like
• 2:39:10
Speaker 1: a picture, as with one hand shading her eyes. She
• 2:39:14
Speaker 1: leant against a tree, watching the strange pair and listening
• 2:39:18
Speaker 1: in a half dream to the melancholy music of the song.
• 2:39:22
Speaker 1: But the tune isn't his own invention, she said to herself.
• 2:39:27
Speaker 1: It's I give THEE all I can no more. She
• 2:39:32
Speaker 1: stood and listened, very attentively, but no tears came into
• 2:39:37
Speaker 1: her eyes. I'll tell THEE everything I can. There's little
• 2:39:43
Speaker 1: tool relate. I saw an aged aged man sitting.
• 2:39:49
  Speaker 2: On the gate.
• 2:39:51
Speaker 1: Oh are you aged man? I said, how is it
• 2:39:55
Speaker 1: to you leave? And his aunts so trickled thro through
• 2:40:00
Speaker 1: my head like water through sieve. He said, I look
• 2:40:08
Speaker 1: for butterflies that sleep among the wheat. I make them
• 2:40:13
Speaker 1: into mutton piles and sell them in the street. I
• 2:40:20
Speaker 1: sell them unto many, said who sail on stormy sees?
• 2:40:27
Speaker 1: And that's the way I get my bread a trifle,
• 2:40:31
Speaker 1: if you please. But I was thinking of the plan
• 2:40:36
Speaker 1: to dye one's whiskers green, and always use so large
• 2:40:41
Speaker 1: a fan that they could not be seen. So, having
• 2:40:46
Speaker 1: no reply to give to what the old man said,
• 2:40:51
Speaker 1: I cried, come tell me you leave, and thumpted him
• 2:40:58
Speaker 1: on the head word accent, smiled, took up the tail.
• 2:41:05
Speaker 1: He said, I go my ways, and when I find
• 2:41:09
Speaker 1: a mountain rill, I set it in a blaze, and
• 2:41:14
Speaker 1: thence they make a stuff they call Roland's macassa oil.
• 2:41:20
Speaker 1: Yet tappans hapneys all they give me for my toll.
• 2:41:29
Speaker 1: But I was thinking of a way to feed oneself
• 2:41:33
Speaker 1: on the batter, and so go on from day to day,
• 2:41:38
Speaker 1: getting a little fatter. I shook him well from side
• 2:41:44
Speaker 1: to side, until his face was blue. Come tell me
• 2:41:49
Speaker 1: how you live, I cried. And what it did you do?
• 2:41:55
Speaker 1: He said? I hunt for haddock's eyes among the heather, bright,
• 2:42:02
Speaker 1: and work them in two waistcoat buttons in the silent night.
• 2:42:08
Speaker 1: And these I do not sell for gold or coign
• 2:42:14
Speaker 1: of silvery shine, but for a copper halfpennis, and that
• 2:42:21
Speaker 1: will purchase nine. I sometimes dig for buttered rolls or
• 2:42:28
Speaker 1: set lim'd twigs for crabs. I sometimes search the grassy
• 2:42:33
Speaker 1: knoles four wheels of handsome cabs. And that's the way
• 2:42:41
Speaker 1: he gave a wink by which I get my wealth.
• 2:42:46
Speaker 1: And very gladly, will I drink your honor's noble health?
• 2:42:53
Speaker 1: I heard him then, for I had just completed my
• 2:42:58
Speaker 1: design to keep the men I bridge from rust by
• 2:43:03
Speaker 1: boiling it in wine. I thanked him much for telling
• 2:43:08
Speaker 1: me the way he got his wealth, but chiefly for
• 2:43:13
Speaker 1: he is a wish that he might drink my noble health.
• 2:43:20
Speaker 1: And now if e'er by chance I put my fingers
• 2:43:25
Speaker 1: into gloom, or madly squeeze a right hand foot into
• 2:43:31
Speaker 1: a left hand shoe, or if I drop upon my
• 2:43:35
Speaker 1: toe a very heavy weight.
• 2:43:37
Speaker 2: I weep, for it reminds me so.
• 2:43:42
Speaker 4: Of that o man I used to know, whose look
• 2:43:50
Speaker 4: was mild, to speech was slow, whose hair was whiter
• 2:43:55
Speaker 4: than the snow, whose face was very like a crow,
• 2:44:01
  Speaker 4: with eyes like.
• 2:44:02
Speaker 1: Cinders, or local Low, who seemed distracted with his woe,
• 2:44:07
Speaker 1: who rocked his body to and fro and muttered mumbling
• 2:44:12
Speaker 1: and low, as if his mouth were full of dough,
• 2:44:17
Speaker 1: who snorted like a buffer low that summer evening long ago,
• 2:44:27
Speaker 1: Ah sitting on again. As the Knight sang the last
• 2:44:35
Speaker 1: words of the ballad, he gathered up the reins and
• 2:44:38
Speaker 1: turned his horse's head along the road by which they
• 2:44:40
Speaker 1: had come. You've only a few yards to go, he said,
• 2:44:44
Speaker 1: down the hill and over that little brook. Then you'll
• 2:44:48
Speaker 1: be a queen. But you'll stay and see me off first,
• 2:44:52
Speaker 1: he added, as Alice turned with an eager look in
• 2:44:55
Speaker 1: the direction to which he pointed. I shan't be long.
• 2:44:58
Speaker 1: You'll wait and wave your handkerchief when I get to
• 2:45:00
Speaker 1: that turn in the road. I think it'll encourage me.
• 2:45:04
  Speaker 2: You see.
• 2:45:06
Speaker 1: Of course i'll wait, said Alice. And thank you very
• 2:45:08
Speaker 1: much for coming so far and for the song. I
• 2:45:11
Speaker 1: liked it very much, I hope, so, the Knight said, doubtfully.
• 2:45:17
Speaker 1: But you didn't cry so much as I thought you would.
• 2:45:21
Speaker 1: So they shook hands, and the Knight rode slowly away
• 2:45:24
Speaker 1: into the forest. It won't take long to see him off,
• 2:45:28
Speaker 1: I suspect, Alice said to herself as she stood watching him.
• 2:45:33
Speaker 1: There he goes right on his head as usual. However,
• 2:45:36
Speaker 1: he gets on again pretty easily. That comes of having
• 2:45:40
Speaker 1: so many things hung around the horse. So she went
• 2:45:43
Speaker 1: on talking to herself as she watched the horse walking
• 2:45:46
Speaker 1: leisurely down the road and the knight tumbling off, first
• 2:45:49
Speaker 1: on one side and then on the other. After the
• 2:45:52
Speaker 1: fourth or fifth tumble, he reached the turn, and then
• 2:45:55
Speaker 1: she waved her handkerchief at him and waited till he
• 2:45:58
Speaker 1: was out of sight. I hope it encouraged him, she said,
• 2:46:03
Speaker 1: as she turned to run down the hill. And now
• 2:46:06
Speaker 1: for the very last brook, and to be a queen,
• 2:46:09
Speaker 1: how grand it sounds. A very few steps brought her
• 2:46:13
Speaker 1: to the edge of the brook, the eighth square at last,
• 2:46:17
Speaker 1: she cried, as she bounded across and threw herself down
• 2:46:21
Speaker 1: to rest on a lawn as soft as moss, with
• 2:46:25
Speaker 1: little flower beds dotted about it. Here and there, Oh,
• 2:46:29
Speaker 1: how glad I am to get here? And what is
• 2:46:32
Speaker 1: this on my head? She exclaimed in a tone of dismay,
• 2:46:35
Speaker 1: as she put her hands up to something very heavy
• 2:46:39
Speaker 1: and fitted tight all around her head. But how can
• 2:46:43
Speaker 1: it have got here without my knowing? She said to herself,
• 2:46:47
Speaker 1: as she lifted it off and set it on her
• 2:46:49
Speaker 1: lap to make out what it possibly could be. It
• 2:46:54
Speaker 1: was a golden crown. End of Chapter eight, Chapter nine
• 2:47:02
Speaker 1: Queen Alice, Well, this is grand. I never expected I
• 2:47:08
Speaker 1: should be a queen so soon, and I'll tell you
• 2:47:11
Speaker 1: what it is, your majesty, she went on in a
• 2:47:14
Speaker 1: severe tone. She was always rather fond of scolding herself.
• 2:47:18
Speaker 1: It'll never do for you to be lolling about on
• 2:47:21
Speaker 1: the grass like that. Queens have to be dignified, you know.
• 2:47:25
Speaker 1: So she got up and walked about rather stiffly, just
• 2:47:29
Speaker 1: at first, as she was afraid that the crown might
• 2:47:31
Speaker 1: come off, but she comforted herself with the thought that
• 2:47:35
Speaker 1: there was no one to see her, and if I
• 2:47:38
Speaker 1: really am a queen, she said, as she sat down again,
• 2:47:42
Speaker 1: I shall be able to manage it quite well. In time,
• 2:47:46
Speaker 1: everything was happening so oddly that she didn't feel a
• 2:47:49
Speaker 1: bit surprised at finding the Red Queen and the White
• 2:47:52
Speaker 1: Queen sitting close to her, one on each side. She
• 2:47:56
Speaker 1: would have liked very much to ask them how they
• 2:47:58
Speaker 1: came to be there, but she fear it would not
• 2:48:00
Speaker 1: be quite civil. However, there would be no harm, she thought,
• 2:48:05
Speaker 1: in asking if the game was over, please would you
• 2:48:08
Speaker 1: tell me? She began looking timidly at the Red Queen.
• 2:48:12
Speaker 1: Speak when you're spoken to the queen sharply interrupted her.
• 2:48:17
Speaker 1: But if everybody obeyed that rule, said Alice, who was
• 2:48:20
Speaker 1: always ready for a little argument. And if you only
• 2:48:23
Speaker 1: spoke when you were spoken to, and the other person
• 2:48:26
Speaker 1: always waiting for you to begin, you see, nobody would
• 2:48:29
Speaker 1: ever say anything. So that ridiculous, said the queen. Why
• 2:48:35
Speaker 1: don't you see, child? And here she broke off with
• 2:48:39
Speaker 1: a frown, and, after thinking for a minute, suddenly changed
• 2:48:42
Speaker 1: the subject of the conversation. What do you mean, if
• 2:48:46
Speaker 1: you really are a queen? What right have you to
• 2:48:49
Speaker 1: call yourself? So you can't be a queen? You know,
• 2:48:53
Speaker 1: till you've passed the proper examination. And the sooner we
• 2:48:57
  Speaker 1: begin it.
• 2:48:57
  Speaker 2: The better.
• 2:48:59
Speaker 1: I only said if, poor Alice pleaded in a piteous tone.
• 2:49:04
Speaker 1: The two queens looked at each other, and the Red
• 2:49:06
Speaker 1: Queen remarked, with a little shudder, She said she only
• 2:49:12
Speaker 1: said if, But she said a great deal more than that,
• 2:49:17
Speaker 1: The White queen moaned, wringing her hands. Oh, ever, so
• 2:49:21
Speaker 1: much more than that. So you did you know, the
• 2:49:27
Speaker 1: Red queen said to Alice, or speak the truth, think
• 2:49:31
Speaker 1: before you speak, and write it down afterwards. I'm sure
• 2:49:36
Speaker 1: I didn't mean. Alice was beginning, but the red Queen
• 2:49:40
Speaker 1: interrupted her impatiently. That's just what I complain of. You
• 2:49:45
Speaker 1: should have meant, what do you suppose the use of
• 2:49:49
Speaker 1: a child without any meaning? Even a joke should have
• 2:49:54
Speaker 1: some meaning, and a child's more important than a joke.
• 2:49:59
Speaker 1: I hope you wouldn't deny that, even if you tried
• 2:50:02
Speaker 1: with both hands. I don't deny things with my hands.
• 2:50:07
Speaker 1: Alice objected. Nobody's said you did, said the Queen. I
• 2:50:12
Speaker 1: said you couldn't if you tried. She's in that state
• 2:50:16
Speaker 1: of mind, said the White Queen, that she wants to
• 2:50:21
Speaker 1: deny something owns. She doesn't know what to deny. A nasty,
• 2:50:29
Speaker 1: vicious temper, the Red Queen remarked, And then there was
• 2:50:33
Speaker 1: an uncomfortable silence for a minute or two. The Red
• 2:50:37
Speaker 1: Queen broke the silence by saying to the White Queen,
• 2:50:40
Speaker 1: I invite you to Alice's dinner party this afternoon. The
• 2:50:46
Speaker 1: White Queen smiled feebly and said, and I invite you.
• 2:50:52
Speaker 1: I didn't know I was to have a party at all,
• 2:50:54
Speaker 1: said Alice. But if there's to be one, I think
• 2:50:58
Speaker 1: I ought to invite the guests. We gave you the
• 2:51:01
Speaker 1: opportunity of doing it. The Red Queen remarked, but I
• 2:51:06
Speaker 1: dare say you've not had many lessons in manners yet.
• 2:51:11
Speaker 1: Manners are not taught in lessons, said Alice. Lessons teach
• 2:51:15
Speaker 1: you to do sums and and things of that sort.
• 2:51:19
Speaker 1: And do you do addition? The White queen asked, what's
• 2:51:24
Speaker 1: one and one and one and one and one and
• 2:51:26
Speaker 1: one and one and one and one. I don't know,
• 2:51:31
Speaker 1: said Alice. I lost count. She can't do addition. The
• 2:51:36
Speaker 1: Red Queen interrupted, can you do all subtraction? Take nine
• 2:51:42
Speaker 1: from eight? Nine from eight? I can't, you know, Alice replied,
• 2:51:47
Speaker 1: very readily. But she can't do subtraction, said the White queen.
• 2:51:53
Speaker 2: Can you do division?
• 2:51:55
Speaker 1: Divide a loaf by a knife? What's the answer to that?
• 2:52:01
Speaker 1: I suppose, Alice was beginning, but the Red Queen answered,
• 2:52:05
Speaker 1: for her bread and butter, of course, try another subtractions on.
• 2:52:11
Speaker 1: Take a bone from a dog and what remains? Alice considered,
• 2:52:17
Speaker 1: the bone wouldn't remain. I suppose if I took it
• 2:52:20
Speaker 1: and the dog wouldn't remain, it would come and bite me.
• 2:52:24
Speaker 1: And I'm sure I shouldn't remain. Then you think nothing
• 2:52:28
Speaker 1: would remain, said the Red Queen. I think that's the answer.
• 2:52:34
Speaker 1: Wrong as usual, said the Red Queen. The dog's temper
• 2:52:39
Speaker 1: would remain, but I don't see how.
• 2:52:42
Speaker 2: Why look here, the.
• 2:52:44
Speaker 1: Red Queen cried. The dog would lose its temper, wouldn't it,
• 2:52:49
Speaker 1: And perhaps it would, Alice replied cautiously. Then if the
• 2:52:53
Speaker 1: dog went away, its temper would remain, the queen exclaimed triumphantly.
• 2:53:00
Speaker 1: Alice said gravely, as she could, they might go different ways,
• 2:53:05
Speaker 1: but she couldn't help thinking to herself, what dreadful nonsense
• 2:53:09
Speaker 1: they are talking. She can't do sums a bit, the
• 2:53:15
Speaker 1: queen said, together with great emphasis. Can you do sums?
• 2:53:20
Speaker 1: Alice asked, turning suddenly on the White Queen, for she
• 2:53:24
Speaker 1: didn't like being found fault with so much. The queen
• 2:53:28
Speaker 1: gasped and shut her eyes. I can do addition if
• 2:53:32
Speaker 1: you'll give me time. But I can do subtraction under
• 2:53:36
Speaker 1: any circumstances. Of course, you know you're a b si,
• 2:53:42
Speaker 1: said the Red Queen. To be sure, I do, said Alice,
• 2:53:47
Speaker 1: So do I. The White Queen whispered, We often say
• 2:53:52
Speaker 1: it over together, dear, and I'll tell you a secret.
• 2:53:55
Speaker 1: I can read words of one letter. Isn't that grand? However,
• 2:54:00
Speaker 1: don't be discouraged, you're comfort in time here, the Red
• 2:54:05
Speaker 1: Queen began again. Can you answer useful questions? She asked?
• 2:54:11
Speaker 2: How is bread made?
• 2:54:15
Speaker 1: I know that, Alice cried eagerly. You take some flower?
• 2:54:19
Speaker 1: Where do you pick the flower, the White Queen asked,
• 2:54:23
Speaker 1: in a garden or in the hedges? Well, it isn't
• 2:54:27
Speaker 1: picked at all, Alice explained, it's ground. How many acres
• 2:54:32
Speaker 1: of ground? Said the White Queen. You mustn't leave out.
• 2:54:36
  Speaker 2: So many things?
• 2:54:37
Speaker 1: Fan ahead, the Red Queen anxiously interrupted, she'll be feverish
• 2:54:43
Speaker 1: after so much thinking. So they set to work and
• 2:54:46
Speaker 1: fanned her with bunches of leaves till she had to
• 2:54:49
Speaker 1: beg them to leave off. It blew her hair about.
• 2:54:52
Speaker 1: So she's all right again now, said the Red Queen.
• 2:54:57
Speaker 1: Do you know languages? What's the French for our fiddled
• 2:55:01
Speaker 1: d Ea? Fiddley D's not English, Alice replied, gravely. Whoever
• 2:55:07
Speaker 1: said it was, uh, said the Red Queen. Alice thought
• 2:55:12
Speaker 1: she saw a way out of the difficulty this time.
• 2:55:15
Speaker 1: If you tell me what language fiddley d is, I'll
• 2:55:19
Speaker 1: tell you the French for it, she exclaimed triumphantly. But
• 2:55:23
Speaker 1: the Red Queen drew herself up rather stiffly and said,
• 2:55:26
Speaker 1: queens never make bargains. I wish queens never asked questions,
• 2:55:33
Speaker 1: Alice thought to herself. Don't let us quarrel. The White
• 2:55:37
Speaker 1: Queen said, in an anxious tone, Ah, what is the
• 2:55:40
Speaker 1: cause of lightning? The cause of lightning, Alice said, very decidedly,
• 2:55:46
Speaker 1: for she felt quite certain about this is the thunder No, no,
• 2:55:51
Speaker 1: she hastily corrected herself. I mean the other way. It's
• 2:55:56
Speaker 1: too late to correct it, said the Red Queen. When
• 2:56:00
Speaker 1: you've once said a thing, that fixes it, and you
• 2:56:02
Speaker 1: must take the consequences. Which reminds me, the White Queen said,
• 2:56:08
Speaker 1: looking down and nervously clasping and unclasping her hands, We
• 2:56:12
Speaker 1: had such a thunderstorm last Tuesday, I mean one of
• 2:56:16
Speaker 1: the last set of tuesdays, you know. Alice was puzzled.
• 2:56:20
Speaker 1: In our country, she remarked, there's only one day at
• 2:56:24
Speaker 1: a time. The Red Queen said, that's a poor, thin
• 2:56:28
Speaker 1: way of doing things. Now Here, we mostly have days
• 2:56:32
Speaker 1: and nights two or three at a time, and sometimes
• 2:56:35
Speaker 1: in the winter we take as many as five nights
• 2:56:38
Speaker 1: together for warmth. You know, are five nights warmer than
• 2:56:43
Speaker 1: one night. Then Alice ventured to ask five times as warm,
• 2:56:48
Speaker 1: of course, but they should be five times as cold
• 2:56:52
Speaker 1: by the same rule. Just so, said the Red Queen.
• 2:56:56
Speaker 1: Five times as warm, and five times as just as
• 2:57:01
Speaker 1: I'm five times as rich as you are, and five
• 2:57:05
Speaker 1: times as clever. Alice sighed and gave it up. It's
• 2:57:10
Speaker 1: exactly like a riddle with no answer. She thought, Humpty
• 2:57:14
Speaker 1: dumpty saw it too. The White Queen went on, in
• 2:57:17
Speaker 1: a low voice, more as if she was talking to herself.
• 2:57:21
Speaker 1: He came to the door with a corkscrew in his hand.
• 2:57:24
Speaker 1: What did he want, said the Red Queen. He said
• 2:57:28
Speaker 1: he would come in. The White Queen went on, because
• 2:57:32
Speaker 1: he was looking for a hippopotamus. Now, as it happened,
• 2:57:36
Speaker 1: there wasn't such a thing in the house that morning,
• 2:57:39
Speaker 1: Is there generally? Alice asked, in an astonished tone. Well,
• 2:57:44
Speaker 1: only on thursdays, said the queen. I know what he
• 2:57:48
Speaker 1: came for, said Alice. He wanted to punish the fish.
• 2:57:51
Speaker 1: Because here the White Queen began again. It was such
• 2:57:55
Speaker 1: a thunderstorm. You can't think she ever, could, you know,
• 2:58:01
Speaker 1: said the Red Queen, And pass of the roof came off,
• 2:58:05
Speaker 1: and ever so much thunder got in, and it went
• 2:58:08
Speaker 1: rolling round the room in great lumps, and knocking over
• 2:58:12
Speaker 1: the tables and things, till I was so frightened I
• 2:58:15
Speaker 1: couldn't remember my own name. Alice said to herself, I
• 2:58:19
Speaker 1: never should try to remember my own name in the
• 2:58:21
Speaker 1: middle of an accident. Where would be the use of it.
• 2:58:24
Speaker 1: But she did not say this aloud, for fear of
• 2:58:26
Speaker 1: hurting the poor queen's feeling.
• 2:58:28
Speaker 2: Your majesty must excuse.
• 2:58:31
Speaker 1: Her, the Red Queen said to Alice, taking one of
• 2:58:34
Speaker 1: the White Queen's hands in her own and gently stroking it.
• 2:58:38
Speaker 1: She means well, but she can't help saying foolish things
• 2:58:42
Speaker 1: as a general rule. The White Queen looked timidly at Alice,
• 2:58:47
Speaker 1: who felt she ought to say something kind, but really
• 2:58:50
Speaker 1: couldn't think of anything at the moment. She never was
• 2:58:53
Speaker 1: really well brought up, The Red Queen went on, but
• 2:58:57
Speaker 1: it's amazing how good tempered she is. Pat her on
• 2:59:00
Speaker 1: the head, and see how please she'll be. But this
• 2:59:04
Speaker 1: is more than Alice said, The courage to do a
• 2:59:07
Speaker 1: little kindness in putting her hair in papers would do
• 2:59:10
Speaker 1: wonder for her. The White Queen gave a deep sigh
• 2:59:14
Speaker 1: and laid her head on Alice's shoulder. Why my so sleepy,
• 2:59:20
Speaker 1: she moaned. She's tired, poor thing, said the Red Queen.
• 2:59:25
Speaker 1: Smooth her hair, lend her your night cap, sing her
• 2:59:29
  Speaker 1: a soothing lullaby. I haven't got a nightcap with me,
• 2:59:34
Speaker 1: said Alice, as she tried to obey the first direction.
• 2:59:37
Speaker 1: And I don't know any soothing lullabies. I must do
• 2:59:41
Speaker 1: it myself, then, said the Red Queen, and she began
• 2:59:45
Speaker 1: hah sha, Buy a lady on Alice's lap till the
• 2:59:50
Speaker 1: fists ready. We've time for a nap. When the fissover,
• 2:59:55
Speaker 1: we'll go to the ball a red queen and white
• 2:59:59
Speaker 1: queen and dulas and all. No, you know the words,
• 3:00:06
Speaker 1: she added, as she put her head down on Alice's
• 3:00:08
Speaker 1: other shoulder. Just sing it to me. I'm getting sleepy too.
• 3:00:14
Speaker 1: And in another moment, both queens were fast asleep and
• 3:00:18
  Speaker 1: snoring loud.
• 3:00:19
Speaker 2: What am I to do?
• 3:00:21
Speaker 1: Exclaimed Alice, looking about in great perplexity as first one
• 3:00:26
Speaker 1: round head and then the other rolled down from her
• 3:00:29
Speaker 1: shoulder and lay like a heavy lump in her lap.
• 3:00:33
Speaker 1: I don't think it ever happened before that one had
• 3:00:36
Speaker 1: had to take care of two queens asleep at once. No,
• 3:00:39
Speaker 1: not in all the history of England. It couldn't, you know,
• 3:00:43
Speaker 1: because there never was more than one queen at a time.
• 3:00:46
Speaker 1: To wake up you heavy things, She went on in
• 3:00:49
Speaker 1: an impatient tone, but there was no answer but a
• 3:00:52
Speaker 1: gentle snoring. The snoring got more distinct every minute, and
• 3:00:57
Speaker 1: sounded more like a tune. At last she could even
• 3:01:00
Speaker 1: make out the words, and she listened so eagerly that
• 3:01:04
Speaker 1: when the two heads vanished from her lap, she hardly
• 3:01:07
Speaker 1: missed them. She was standing before an arched doorway, over
• 3:01:10
Speaker 1: which were the words Queen Alice in large letters. On
• 3:01:14
Speaker 1: each side of the arch, there was a bell handle.
• 3:01:18
Speaker 1: One was marked visitor's bell and the other servant's bell.
• 3:01:23
Speaker 1: I'll wait till the song's over, thought Alice, and then
• 3:01:26
Speaker 1: I'll ring the Which bell must I ring? She went on,
• 3:01:31
Speaker 1: very much puzzled by the names. I'm not a visitor
• 3:01:35
Speaker 1: and i am not a servant. There ought to be
• 3:01:37
Speaker 1: one marked queen, you know. Just then the door opened
• 3:01:41
Speaker 1: a little way, and a creature with a long beak
• 3:01:44
Speaker 1: put its head out for a moment and said, no
• 3:01:47
Speaker 1: admittance till the week after next, and shut the door
• 3:01:51
Speaker 1: again with a bang. Alice knocked and rang in vain
• 3:01:54
Speaker 1: for a long time. But at last a very old frog,
• 3:01:58
Speaker 1: who was sitting under a tree, got up and hobbled
• 3:02:01
Speaker 1: slowly towards her. He was dressed in bright yellow and
• 3:02:04
Speaker 1: had enormous boots on. What is it now, the frog said,
• 3:02:10
Speaker 1: in a deep, hoarse whisper. Alice turned round, ready to
• 3:02:14
Speaker 1: find fault with anybody. Where's the servant whose business it
• 3:02:18
Speaker 1: is to open the door? She began angrily, Which door,
• 3:02:23
Speaker 1: said the frog. Alice almost stamped with irritation at the
• 3:02:27
Speaker 1: slow drawl in which she spoke. This this door, of course.
• 3:02:31
Speaker 1: The frog at the door with his large, dull eyes
• 3:02:34
Speaker 1: for a minute. Then he went nearer and rubbed it
• 3:02:37
Speaker 1: with his thumb, as if he were trying whether the
• 3:02:40
Speaker 1: paint would come off. Then he looked at Alice to
• 3:02:43
Speaker 1: answer the door. He said, what's it been asking of?
• 3:02:49
Speaker 1: He was so hoarse that Alice could scarcely hear. I
• 3:02:53
Speaker 1: don't know what you mean, She said. It talks English,
• 3:02:57
Speaker 1: doesn't it. The frog went on, or are you deaf?
• 3:03:02
Speaker 1: What did it answer you?
• 3:03:05
  Speaker 2: Nothing?
• 3:03:06
Speaker 1: Alice said, impatiently. I've been knocking at it. Shouldn't do that,
• 3:03:11
Speaker 1: shouldn't do that? The frog muttered vexes it, you know.
• 3:03:15
Speaker 1: Then he went up and gave the door a kick
• 3:03:17
Speaker 1: with one of his great feet. You let it alone,
• 3:03:21
Speaker 1: he panted out, as he holed back to his tree.
• 3:03:24
Speaker 1: And it'll let you alone, you know. At this moment,
• 3:03:28
Speaker 1: the door was flung open, and a shrill voice was heard, singing,
• 3:03:33
Speaker 1: do with the looking glass well, dicks Alice that said,
• 3:03:36
  Speaker 1: I've sept her a red hand, I've a crown on
• 3:03:39
Speaker 1: my head. And were the looking glass creatures wherever they be? Come,
• 3:03:44
Speaker 1: and I'm with the Red Queen, the White Queen and me,
• 3:03:49
Speaker 1: and hundreds of voices joined in the chorus.
• 3:03:53
Speaker 5: Then fill up the glasses as quick as you can,
• 3:03:56
Speaker 5: and sprinkle the tables with buttons and bread, and put
• 3:04:00
Speaker 5: cats in the coffee, and my siner tea, and welcome
• 3:04:07
Speaker 5: Queen Alice with the tea.
• 3:04:09
Speaker 1: Times three then followed a confused noise of cheering, and
• 3:04:15
Speaker 1: Alice thought to herself, thirty times three makes ninety. I
• 3:04:21
Speaker 1: wonder if anyone's counting In a minute. There was silence again,
• 3:04:24
Speaker 1: and the same shrill voice sang another verse.
• 3:04:27
Speaker 6: Oh, looking grass creatures, quoth Alice, draw near tis an
• 3:04:32
Speaker 6: honor to see me, a favor to hear tis a
• 3:04:36
Speaker 6: privilege Hi, to have dinner and tea along with the
• 3:04:42
Speaker 6: Red Queen, the White Queen and me.
• 3:04:46
Speaker 1: Then came the chorus again. Then fill up the glasses
• 3:04:50
Speaker 1: with treacle, lending or anything else that is pleasant to drink,
• 3:04:56
Speaker 1: mix sand with the cider, and wool with the wall,
• 3:05:01
Speaker 1: and welcome Queen Alice with ninety times nine, ninety times nine.
• 3:05:08
Speaker 1: Alice repeated in despair. Oh, that'll never be done. I'd
• 3:05:12
Speaker 1: better go in at once, And there was a dead
• 3:05:14
Speaker 1: silence the moment she appeared. Alice glanced nervously along the
• 3:05:19
Speaker 1: table as she walked up the large hall and noticed
• 3:05:23
Speaker 1: there were about fifty guests of all kinds. Some were animals,
• 3:05:27
Speaker 1: some birds, and there were even a few flowers among them.
• 3:05:31
Speaker 1: I'm glad they'd come without waiting to be asked, she thought.
• 3:05:35
Speaker 1: I should never have known who were the right people
• 3:05:37
Speaker 1: to invite. There were three chairs at the head of
• 3:05:40
Speaker 1: the table. The Red and White Queens had already taken
• 3:05:43
Speaker 1: two of them, but the middle one was empty. Alice
• 3:05:47
Speaker 1: sat down in it, rather uncomfortable in the silence and
• 3:05:50
Speaker 1: longing for some one to speak. At last, the Red
• 3:05:53
Speaker 1: Queen began, you've missed the sup and fish, she said.
• 3:05:58
Speaker 1: Put on the joint, and the waiters set a leg
• 3:06:01
Speaker 1: of mutton before Alice, who looked at it rather anxiously,
• 3:06:05
Speaker 1: as she had never had to carve a joint before.
• 3:06:08
Speaker 1: You look a little shy. Let me introduce you to
• 3:06:12
Speaker 1: that leg of mutton, said the Red Queen. Alice's mutton, Mutton, Alice.
• 3:06:19
Speaker 1: The leg of mutton got up in the dish and
• 3:06:21
Speaker 1: made a little bow to Alice, and Alice returned the bow,
• 3:06:25
Speaker 1: not knowing whether to be frightened or amused. May I
• 3:06:28
Speaker 1: give you a slice, she said, taking up the knife
• 3:06:31
Speaker 1: and fork and looking from one queen to the other.
• 3:06:35
Speaker 1: Certainly not, the Red Queen said, very decidedly, it isn't
• 3:06:40
Speaker 1: etiquette to cut any one you've.
• 3:06:43
  Speaker 2: Been introduced to.
• 3:06:44
Speaker 1: Remove the joint, and the waiters carried it off and
• 3:06:48
Speaker 1: brought a large plum pudding in its place. I won't
• 3:06:52
Speaker 1: be introduced to the pudding, please, Alice said, rather hastily,
• 3:06:56
Speaker 1: or we shall get no dinner at all. May I
• 3:06:59
Speaker 1: give you some? But the Red Queen looked sulky and growled,
• 3:07:03
Speaker 1: pudding Alice, Alice's pudding. Remove the pudding and the waiters
• 3:07:10
Speaker 1: took it away, so quickly that Alice couldn't return its bow. However,
• 3:07:15
Speaker 1: she didn't see why the Red Queen should be the
• 3:07:17
Speaker 1: only one to give orders, so as an experiment, she
• 3:07:20
Speaker 1: called out, waiter, bring back the pudding, And there it
• 3:07:24
Speaker 1: was again in a moment, like a conjuring trick. It
• 3:07:27
Speaker 1: was so large that she couldn't help feeling a little
• 3:07:30
Speaker 1: shy with it, as she had been with the mutton. However,
• 3:07:33
Speaker 1: she conquered her shyness by a great effort and cut
• 3:07:36
Speaker 1: a slice and handed it to the Red Queen. What impertinence?
• 3:07:41
Speaker 1: Said the pudding. I wonder how you'd like it if
• 3:07:45
Speaker 1: I was to cut a slice out of you, you creature.
• 3:07:51
Speaker 1: It spoke in a thick, suety sort of voice, and
• 3:07:54
Speaker 1: Alice hadn't a word to say in reply. She could
• 3:07:57
Speaker 1: only sit and look at it and gasp. Make a remark,
• 3:08:02
Speaker 1: said the Red Queen, It's ridiculous to leave all the
• 3:08:05
Speaker 1: conversation to the pudding. Do you know I've had such
• 3:08:09
Speaker 1: a quantity of poetry repeated to me to day? Alice
• 3:08:12
Speaker 1: began a little frightened at finding that the moment she
• 3:08:15
Speaker 1: opened her lips, there was dead silence, and all eyes
• 3:08:19
Speaker 1: were fixed upon her. And it's a very curious thing.
• 3:08:22
Speaker 1: I think every poem was about fishes in some way.
• 3:08:26
Speaker 1: Do you know why they're so fond of fishes? All
• 3:08:28
Speaker 1: about here? She spoke to the Red Queen, whose answer
• 3:08:31
Speaker 1: was a little wide of the mark as to fishes. Eh,
• 3:08:35
Speaker 1: she said, very slowly and solemnly, putting her mouth close
• 3:08:39
Speaker 1: to Alice's ear. Her White Majesty knows a lovely riddle
• 3:08:44
Speaker 1: all in poetry, all about fishes. Shall as she repeat it,
• 3:08:49
Speaker 1: Her Red Majesty is very kind to mention it. The
• 3:08:54
Speaker 1: White Queen murmured in Alice's other ear, in a voice
• 3:08:57
Speaker 1: like the cooing of a pigeon. It would be such
• 3:09:00
Speaker 1: a treat, May I please do? Alice said, very politely.
• 3:09:07
Speaker 1: The White Queen laughed with delight and stroked Alice's cheek.
• 3:09:11
Speaker 1: Then she began. First, the fish must be caught. That
• 3:09:16
Speaker 1: is easier, baby, I think could have caught it. Next,
• 3:09:20
Speaker 1: the fish must be bought. That is easy, A penny
• 3:09:23
Speaker 1: I think would have bought it. Now, cook me the
• 3:09:26
Speaker 1: fish that is easy and will not take more than
• 3:09:30
Speaker 1: a minute. Let it lie in a dish that is easy,
• 3:09:35
Speaker 1: because it already is in it. Bring it here, let
• 3:09:39
Speaker 1: me sup it is easy to set a dish on
• 3:09:42
Speaker 1: the table, take the dish, cover up. Ah, that is
• 3:09:48
Speaker 1: so hard, I fear I am unable, for it holds
• 3:09:52
Speaker 1: it like glue holds the lid to the dish while
• 3:09:57
Speaker 1: it lies in the middle. Which is it's easiest to do.
• 3:10:02
Speaker 1: Un dish cover the fish or dish cover the riddle.
• 3:10:08
Speaker 1: Take a minute to think about it, and then guess,
• 3:10:11
Speaker 1: said the Red Queen. Meanwhile, we'll drink your health, Queen
• 3:10:15
Speaker 1: Alice's health. She screamed at the top of her voice,
• 3:10:19
Speaker 1: and all the guests began drinking it directly, and very queenly.
• 3:10:23
Speaker 1: They managed it. Some of them put their glasses upon
• 3:10:26
Speaker 1: their heads like extinguishers and drank all that trickled down
• 3:10:29
Speaker 1: their faces. Others upset the decanters and drank the wine
• 3:10:33
Speaker 1: as it ran off the edges of the table, and
• 3:10:36
Speaker 1: three of them, who looked like kangaroos, scrambled into the
• 3:10:39
Speaker 1: dish of roast mutton and began eagerly lapping up the gravy,
• 3:10:44
Speaker 1: just like pigs in a trough. Thought, Alice, you ought
• 3:10:49
Speaker 1: to return thanks in a neat speech, the Red Queen said,
• 3:10:54
Speaker 1: frowning at Alice as she spoke we must support you,
• 3:10:57
Speaker 1: you know, the White Queen whispered. Alice got up to
• 3:11:01
Speaker 1: do it very obediently, but a little frightened. Thank you
• 3:11:05
Speaker 1: very much, she whispered in reply. But I can do
• 3:11:09
Speaker 1: quite well without That wouldn't be at all the thing,
• 3:11:14
Speaker 1: the Red Queen said, very decidedly. So Alice tried to
• 3:11:17
Speaker 1: submit to it with a good grace. And they did push, so,
• 3:11:22
Speaker 1: she said afterwards, when she was telling her sister the
• 3:11:24
Speaker 1: history of the feast, you would have thought that they
• 3:11:27
Speaker 1: wanted to squeeze me flat. In fact, it was rather
• 3:11:30
Speaker 1: difficult for her to keep in her place while she
• 3:11:32
Speaker 1: made her speech. The two queens pushed her so one
• 3:11:35
Speaker 1: on either side that they nearly lifted her up into
• 3:11:38
Speaker 1: the air. I rise to return thanks, Alice began, And
• 3:11:44
Speaker 1: she really did rise as she spoke, several inches, but
• 3:11:48
Speaker 1: she got hold of the edge of the table and
• 3:11:50
Speaker 1: managed to pull herself down again.
• 3:11:52
Speaker 2: Take care of yourself.
• 3:11:54
Speaker 1: Screamed the White Queen, seizing Alice's hair with both her hands.
• 3:11:58
Speaker 2: Something's going to happen.
• 3:12:00
Speaker 1: Uh. And then, as Alice afterwards described it, all sorts
• 3:12:05
Speaker 1: of things happened. In a moment. The candles all grew
• 3:12:08
Speaker 1: up to the ceiling, looking something like a bed of
• 3:12:11
Speaker 1: rushes with fireworks at the top. As to the bottles,
• 3:12:14
Speaker 1: they each took a pair of plates, which they hastily
• 3:12:17
Speaker 1: fitted on as wings, and so with forks for legs,
• 3:12:21
Speaker 1: went fluttering about in all directions, and very like birds
• 3:12:24
Speaker 1: they looked, Alice thought to herself as well as she
• 3:12:27
Speaker 1: could in the dreadful confusion that was beginning at this moment.
• 3:12:31
Speaker 1: She heard a hoarse laugh on her side and turned
• 3:12:34
Speaker 1: to see what was the matter with the white Queen.
• 3:12:36
Speaker 1: But instead of the queen there was the leg of
• 3:12:39
Speaker 1: mutton sitting in the chair.
• 3:12:41
  Speaker 2: Here I am.
• 3:12:42
Speaker 1: Cried a voice from the soup tureen, and Alice turned again,
• 3:12:46
Speaker 1: just in time to see the Queen's broad, good natured
• 3:12:49
Speaker 1: face grinning at her for a moment over the edge
• 3:12:52
Speaker 1: of the tureen, before she disappeared into the soup. There
• 3:12:55
Speaker 1: was not a moment to be lost. Already several of
• 3:12:59
Speaker 1: the guests were lying in the dishes, and the soup
• 3:13:01
Speaker 1: ladle was walking up the table towards Alice's chair and
• 3:13:05
Speaker 1: beckoning to her impatiently to get out of its way.
• 3:13:08
Speaker 1: I can't stand this any longer, she cried, as she
• 3:13:12
Speaker 1: jumped up and seized the tablecloth with both hands. One
• 3:13:16
Speaker 1: good pull, and plates, dishes, guests, and candles came crashing
• 3:13:20
Speaker 1: down together in a heap on the floor. And as
• 3:13:23
Speaker 1: for you, she went on turning fiercely upon the Red Queen,
• 3:13:27
Speaker 1: whom she considered as the cause of all the mischief.
• 3:13:30
Speaker 1: But the queen was no longer on her side. She
• 3:13:33
Speaker 1: had suddenly dwindled down to the size of a little doll,
• 3:13:36
Speaker 1: and was now on the table, merrily running round and
• 3:13:40
Speaker 1: round after her own shawl, which was trailing behind her.
• 3:13:43
Speaker 1: At any other time, Alice would have felt surprised at this,
• 3:13:47
Speaker 1: but she was far too much excited to be surprised
• 3:13:50
Speaker 1: at anything now. As for you, she repeated, catching hold
• 3:13:55
Speaker 1: of the little creature in the very act of jumping
• 3:13:57
Speaker 1: over a bottle which had just lighted upon the table,
• 3:14:00
Speaker 1: I shall shake you into a kitten.
• 3:14:03
  Speaker 2: That I will.
• 3:14:06
Speaker 1: End of Chapter nine, Chapter ten shaking. She took her
• 3:14:11
Speaker 1: off the table as she spoke, and shook her backwards
• 3:14:14
Speaker 1: and forwards with all her might. The Red Queen made
• 3:14:18
Speaker 1: no resistance whatever, Only her face grew very small, and
• 3:14:23
Speaker 1: her eyes got large and green and still. As Alice
• 3:14:27
Speaker 1: went on shaking, her. She kept on growing shorter and fatter,
• 3:14:32
Speaker 1: and softer and rounder, and chapter eleven waking And it
• 3:14:40
Speaker 1: really was a kitten after all. Chapter twelve, which dreamed it?
• 3:14:48
Speaker 1: Your majesty, shouldn't her so loud, Alice said, rubbing her
• 3:14:52
Speaker 1: eyes and addressing the kitten respectfully. Yet with some severity
• 3:14:57
Speaker 1: you woke me out of. Oh such a nice dream.
• 3:15:00
Speaker 1: And you've been along with me, kitty, all through the
• 3:15:03
Speaker 1: looking glass world, did you know it?
• 3:15:05
  Speaker 3: Dear?
• 3:15:06
Speaker 1: It is a very inconvenient habit of kittens. Alice had
• 3:15:10
Speaker 1: once made the remark that whatever you say to him,
• 3:15:13
Speaker 1: they all was purr if they would only perfect yes
• 3:15:17
Speaker 1: and mew for no, or any rule of that sort.
• 3:15:21
Speaker 1: She had said, so that one could keep up a conversation.
• 3:15:25
Speaker 1: But how can you talk with a person if they
• 3:15:27
Speaker 1: always say the same thing. On this occasion, the kitten
• 3:15:32
Speaker 1: only purred, and it was impossible to guess whether it
• 3:15:36
Speaker 1: meant yes or no. So Alice hunted among the chessmen
• 3:15:40
Speaker 1: on the table till she had found the red queen.
• 3:15:44
Speaker 1: Then she went down on her knees on the hearth
• 3:15:47
Speaker 1: rug and put the kitten and the queen to look
• 3:15:50
Speaker 1: at each other. Now, Kitty she cried, clapping her hands triumphantly.
• 3:15:55
Speaker 1: Confess that that was what you turned into. But it
• 3:16:00
Speaker 1: look at it, she said, when she was explaining the
• 3:16:03
Speaker 1: thing afterwards to her sister, it turned away its head
• 3:16:06
  Speaker 1: and pretended.
• 3:16:07
Speaker 2: Not to see it.
• 3:16:08
Speaker 1: But it looked a little ashamed of itself, So I
• 3:16:11
Speaker 1: think it must have been the red queen. Sit up
• 3:16:14
Speaker 1: a little more stiffly, dear Alice, cried, with a merry
• 3:16:18
Speaker 1: laugh and curtsey. While you're thinking what to what to purr?
• 3:16:23
Speaker 1: It saves time, remember, she caught it up and gave
• 3:16:27
Speaker 1: it one little kiss, just in honor of having been
• 3:16:30
Speaker 1: a red queen. Snowdrop, my pet. She went on, looking
• 3:16:35
Speaker 1: over her shoulder at the white kitten, which was still
• 3:16:38
Speaker 1: patiently undergoing its toilette. When will Dinah have finished your
• 3:16:43
Speaker 1: white majesty? I wonder that must be the reason you
• 3:16:46
Speaker 1: were so untidy in my dream. Dinah, do you know
• 3:16:50
Speaker 1: that you're scrubbing a white queen? Really, it's most disrespectful
• 3:16:54
Speaker 1: of you. And what did Dinah turn to? I wonder?
• 3:16:58
Speaker 1: She prattled on, as you settled comfortably down with one
• 3:17:02
Speaker 1: elbow on the rug and her chin in her hand,
• 3:17:05
Speaker 1: to watch the kittens. Tell me, Dinah, did you turn
• 3:17:08
Speaker 1: to Humpty dumpty? I think you did. However, you'd better
• 3:17:12
Speaker 1: not mention it to your friends just yet, for I'm
• 3:17:15
Speaker 1: not sure. By the way, Kitty, if only you'd really
• 3:17:18
Speaker 1: been with me in my dream, there was one thing
• 3:17:20
Speaker 1: you would have enjoyed. I had such a quantity of
• 3:17:24
Speaker 1: poetry said to me, all about fishes. To morrow morning,
• 3:17:28
Speaker 1: you shall have a real treat. All the time you're
• 3:17:31
Speaker 1: eating your breakfast, I'll repeat the Walrus and the Carpenter
• 3:17:36
Speaker 1: to you, and then you can make believe its oysters.
• 3:17:39
  Speaker 2: Dear.
• 3:17:39
Speaker 1: Now, Kitty, let's consider who it was that dreamed it all.
• 3:17:43
Speaker 1: This is a serious question, my dear, and you should
• 3:17:46
Speaker 1: not go on licking your paw like that, as if
• 3:17:49
Speaker 1: Dinah hadn't washed you this morning. You see, Kitty, it
• 3:17:52
Speaker 1: must have been either me or the Red King. He
• 3:17:56
Speaker 1: was part of my dream, of course, but then I
• 3:17:59
Speaker 1: was part of his dream too, Was it the Red King?
• 3:18:02
  Speaker 2: Kitty?
• 3:18:03
Speaker 1: You were his wife, my dear sir, you ought to know. Oh, Kitty,
• 3:18:07
Speaker 1: do help settle it. I'm sure you're por can wait.
• 3:18:11
Speaker 1: But the provoking kitten only began on the other poor
• 3:18:14
Speaker 1: and pretended it hadn't heard the question, which do you
• 3:18:19
  Speaker 1: think it was?
• 3:18:22
  Speaker 2: A boat?
• 3:18:23
Speaker 1: Beneath the sunny sky, lingering on dreamily in an evening
• 3:18:27
Speaker 1: of July, Children three, that nestle near, eager eye and
• 3:18:32
Speaker 1: willing ear, pleased, a simple tale to hear long has paled,
• 3:18:37
Speaker 1: that sunny sky echoes fade, and memories die, Autumn frosts
• 3:18:43
Speaker 1: have slain. July still she haunts me, phantom wise alice
• 3:18:50
Speaker 1: moving under skies never seen by waking eyes. Children, Yet
• 3:18:56
Speaker 1: the tale to hear, eager eye and willing ear lovingly
• 3:19:00
Speaker 1: shall nestle near in a wonderland They lie, dreaming as
• 3:19:06
Speaker 1: the days go by, dreaming as the summers die, ever
• 3:19:10
Speaker 1: drifting down the stream, lingering in the golden gleam life.
• 3:19:15
Speaker 1: What is it but a dream? And of through the
