Transcript
- 0:00Today's guest has charmed the world for two decades,
- 0:02reminding us that being nerdy is totally cool.
- 0:04You may know her from her roles in Supernatural,
- 0:06Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Horrible Sing Along Vlog,
- 0:09and honestly, the list can go on and on.
- 0:10But she's also founded Geek and Sundry and created the web series The Guild,
- 0:14which is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
- 0:16And to commemorate the legacy of this series,
- 0:18the incredibly talented Felicia Day is here to talk about the upcoming
- 0:21The Guild film and how she's bringing it to the fans through Kickstarter.
- 0:24Thank you so much for being here today,
- 0:25Felicia.
- 0:26Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:28I'm so excited to talk talk about my movie.
- 0:30It's gonna be great.
- 0:32I just want to begin by saying,
- 0:33congratulations on 20 years of the guild.
- 0:35It is so incredible to create something that has such a lasting impact,
- 0:38such as this. How does that kind of feel?
- 0:40I mean, it is 19 years, so we're trying to make the movie to release
- 0:44for our 20th anniversary. So just not to age me too much,
- 0:47but you know, whatever. Let's it is almost 20 years.
- 0:47Sorry.
- 0:50~ it feels amazing. You know, the last couple of years when I go to conventions,
- 0:54I have met people who have shown me pictures of them when they were like a teenager,
- 0:58and now they're an adult with a kid with them.
- 1:00And the fact that I can have sustained a career doing what I love in
- 1:05the areas that I love.
- 1:07And the the areas that I love have grown so much and I can still hang on.
- 1:10It is just a joy. And I'm I'm just excited to make this movie as sort
- 1:15of a last stamp. Hopefully not a last thing,
- 1:17but just like the last biggest stamp.
- 1:18Because boy, this is Kickstarter a lot of work,
- 1:21but it's gonna be really cool.
- 1:23I have to say that I started watching this when I was about 15,
- 1:25like very early on. I'm 34 now.
- 1:26Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27So I I was and so to hear when it was coming back,
- 1:31and I was just like, it was incredible.
- 1:32The nostalgia factor kicked in.
- 1:34I was like, this is so cool to see something that you love so much return.
- 1:37And obviously, I mean people are responding to it so well.
- 1:41~ but but going back to that first,
- 1:44like the original the guild, what kind of sparked the idea of decide
- 1:48to bring the guild to to screens?
- 1:50Well, I mean, I was just rejected a lot in Hollywood and I was addicted
- 1:55to World of Warcraft. And I had a group of women that I met with
- 1:58to talk about career, you know,
- 2:00wins and losses every week. And I finally got guilted into writing something
- 2:05for myself as an actor. And I ended up writing about online gamers.
- 2:08When I showed it to Hollywood people,
- 2:09they were like, I don't understand.
- 2:11How do you game with people online?
- 2:12I mean, this was so early. This was before the iPhone.
- 2:14YouTube had just started and one of my friends in the group was
- 2:19You know, she was my sketchwriting teacher and she was like,
- 2:21Hey, I filmed a couple sketches and put them on this new thing called YouTube.
- 2:24Let's just film and put it up.
- 2:27But I was like, us film? What?
- 2:29And it was really scary. I will be honest with you.
- 2:33It was not I would never have done it without the support of Kim and Jane,
- 2:36the director. But when we started doing it and I got my first comments,
- 2:40I was like, my gosh, after so many years of being rejected,
- 2:43I have people who like what I do.
- 2:45I just want to keep doing this.
- 2:46And so that's how my career took a big,
- 2:48big turn. Every acting opportunity I've had that people know me from now,
- 2:53except for Buffy, has been op a door opened because of what I did on the web.
- 2:58And so yeah, I'm just so glad to be able to get the gang back together
- 3:02and and just put a little exclamation mark on our legacy.
- 3:06I do have to say that like that this was the project I met you on and
- 3:09I was just like I still to this day haven't watched Buffy.
- 3:12It's one of the things that my friends are like but but it's one
- 3:15It's okay.
- 3:17of those things where like this was the one I was like,
- 3:19and then I saw you supernatural and like all of a sudden you were
- 3:22you were everywhere. You were doing all these incredible things.
- 3:24But it's kinda cool to have the guild to be that first project that felt
- 3:28so like personal, I would assume,
- 3:28Yeah.
- 3:30as well.
- 3:31yeah, for sure. I mean, I'd just been rejected so much and I
- 3:34was like floundering around. If I cut my hair,
- 3:36will they like me? If I put glasses on,
- 3:37will they like me? And when I said that I was a math major,
- 3:40I love video games, like there was no part for me in Hollywood.
- 3:43There still wouldn't be. Like,
- 3:45there's nothing out there for women like Codex twenty years ago or
- 3:48me twenty years later. Like, it's just a weird blind spot,
- 3:52especially with women. You know,
- 3:53they'll they'll they'll put gamers on there,
- 3:54but they're always those cliche gamers.
- 3:56Or there may be a dad gamer, but like,
- 3:59God forbid a mom could game. It's just so
- 4:01~ irritating. But at the same time,
- 4:03yeah, I I I showed the world who I was,
- 4:06which is not standard. And so many people responded because again,
- 4:09unless you put representation out there,
- 4:12people don't feel seen. They don't feel accepted.
- 4:14They don't feel acknowledged. And so by doing that,
- 4:17especially the creator side of Hollywood,
- 4:19we're like, ~ that girl's cool.
- 4:21I want her type on my show. So that's really all the benefit of my career came from
- 4:27just taking a leap and just showing people who I was.
- 4:30And I encourage everybody to do that with their creativity.
- 4:33And not just that, when think about the impact it's had,
- 4:35like I granted I being fifteen,
- 4:38I don't remember a lot from that time p per se,
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:40but this was one of the first projects I remember.
- 4:42And then it felt like all of a sudden there was all kinds of you know,
- 4:44there was tabletop RPG games and like this felt like the first time that
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:47you we really felt represented as like a population of like nerds.
- 4:51It's okay to be nerdy and it's okay to be geeky and that's cool.
- 4:54~ and so I that's one of the things I love about this series is that it made
- 4:54Absolutely.
- 4:58me feel like I was seen ~ in a way that I had never been seen before.
- 5:00~
- 5:01that means so much to me. And it's also a running theme in everything I do.
- 5:05Yeah. When I did my company Geek and Sundry,
- 5:06we were the first people to, you know,
- 5:08do tabletop gaming on a on a more polished level.
- 5:11And I was told by so many suit people that that's not gonna work.
- 5:15Long term won't long, you know,
- 5:16long form won't work on table,
- 5:18you know, on YouTube. It won't work.
- 5:19You shouldn't do that show. It'll be the bomb.
- 5:21And then later when I wanted to do live streaming of D and D on Geek and Sundry,
- 5:25which turned into critical role,
- 5:27I was told, that's not gonna work.
- 5:29Nobody wants to watch that. And like,
- 5:31I don't know what to tell you.
- 5:32Here we are.
- 5:33~ here we are. I kind of got used to being told that my ideas were
- 5:37not cool by mainstream people because I know that and when I go to conventions
- 5:41I see the people who will enjoy what I do.
- 5:43So like, screw Screw the mainstream.
- 5:45It's fine. ~ We can make a movie without them.
- 5:48For sure. And speaking of the movie,
- 5:50so you are reuniting for the guild film,
- 5:52which is so exciting, but how does it feel to kind of return to this world after
- 5:55so many years?
- 5:56It was so fun to be able to get into these characters' heads again.
- 6:00It was a long you know, I burned out very badly,
- 6:02like a psychologically. It was pretty pretty a a difficult time when
- 6:06I ended the show. It was kind of a a a budget thing,
- 6:10you know. At that point, web series were not making money and people just were like,
- 6:16Hey, I can advertise against a hamster looking around.
- 6:19Why should I fund high budget content on the web?
- 6:21Sure.
- 6:22Yeah. So he was kind of like this weird dip.
- 6:24And strangely enough, now with obsessions and backrooms and marketplace movie,
- 6:28feels like now it's finally reaching the point where,
- 6:31like, yeah, this independent con it,
- 6:33that's the that's where the cool people are.
- 6:34And, you know, it's a complete coincidence,
- 6:37but it's really cool that we might be able to make a movie on a movie budget
- 6:42~ with these characters who have lasted so long in the zeitgeist.
- 6:45So yeah, it's pretty cool. ~ I love the characters.
- 6:49The script is just awesome. I'm so proud of it.
- 6:52It makes me laugh. It made the
- 6:53Rest of the cast laugh when we had a read through and ~ we have a lot
- 6:57of fun in store when I announce especially where it's set and what's gonna happen
- 7:01a little bit of it on July twentieth when we launch.
- 7:05So close. ~
- 7:05It's up close.
- 7:07when you like what what decided to come back for this?
- 7:10Like because you had set aside for a little bit and so something drew
- 7:13you back into wanting to come back to the guild.
- 7:16What was it that was like this is the time?
- 7:17Mm
- 7:18yeah, you know, it was the twentieth anniversary.
- 7:20I had just had a baby for our tenth anniversary,
- 7:23so I wasn't really able to do anything to celebrate the show properly.
- 7:26~ and I got a call about a year and a half ago from a Hollywood executive
- 7:31who was very sweet and I was kind of excited because ~ basically the guild,
- 7:36other than the first year, has been ignored by Hollywood,
- 7:40you know, like nobody ever wanted to option it or give me a budget to do anything.
- 7:44We shot it in our houses the whole time.
- 7:45I never had a full time employee other than
- 7:47You know, it's me and my producer,
- 7:49you know. So we did it on such,
- 7:50You're right.
- 7:51you know, for six years on no money,
- 7:53and we just kept going, thank God.
- 7:55And so I was kind of excited. I was like,
- 7:57they want to do the show again.
- 7:58And they wanted to reboot it with younger actors.
- 8:02And I got so angry, I was like,
- 8:05I I literally had like a moment where I was so furious.
- 8:09I'm like, well, what can I do about this?
- 8:11I can make a movie and I could do it around this this I could just do
- 8:12Right.
- 8:15it around this this institution.
- 8:17So
- 8:17It's a little anger and spite.
- 8:19It's also love of the characters and having a great idea that I
- 8:22had fun with writing. And it really is such a combination of all that.
- 8:26Da I mean, that has to be very aggravating to be like,
- 8:28why not us? You know, we were the ones that made this project.
- 8:29Ha ha.
- 8:32We did it special. You put your blood,
- 8:33sweat, and tears into it, and now you wanna just reboot it with somebody else?
- 8:36Well, you know, I think in my twenty years of Hollywood and kind of banging
- 8:40my head against it, you know, all the things that I achieved were great.
- 8:43It never opened doors there, except with creators writing me roles.
- 8:47And I think I got to the point where I'm just like,
- 8:49you know, I have stories to tell and there's so many other ways to tell them.
- 8:53I've done an audible series called Third Eye.
- 8:55I've done an audible mov you know,
- 8:56I did a movie that I just recorded myself and released,
- 8:59'cause I wanted to do the movie and I just was like,
- 9:02I'm not gonna wait for money. So
- 9:04And I'm writing, you know, I wrote a graphic novel.
- 9:05I have a novel I'm working on.
- 9:06There's so many ways to tell stories.
- 9:09And I think I got to the point where I'm like,
- 9:10you know what? My stories are great for me.
- 9:13They might not be good for you,
- 9:14Hollywood, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be told.
- 9:16And that's what's so amazing. Coming,
- 9:18you know, ~ coming at anything as a creator now.
- 9:21There's just ways to reach audience.
- 9:23You don't need it. You know, it would be nice to have millions of dollars
- 9:27to make a movie. I mean, we're gonna have to have a lot of money to make a movie,
- 9:31but.
- 9:32~ it'd be nice to have the support to not have to do the work on myself,
- 9:35but you know what? I'm willing to do the work.
- 9:37And I love that you're you know that you're creating a space where people
- 9:40are being represented that like you said,
- 9:42like why isn't there more mom gamers and stuff like that?
- 9:45And you know, there are people who are we're we're all getting older,
- 9:46Yeah.
- 9:48unfortunately, you know, and it's like these are the things that like
- 9:50we still love to do this. I still love to play DD.
- 9:53Ma I just played Magic the other day,
- 9:54you know. We like to get together and we like to do this.
- 9:55love it. Yeah.
- 9:56And so it's cool that you're creating this space for that.
- 9:58Yeah, it's all about, I mean, just obstinence really,
- 10:01you know, and also determination that you know,
- 10:04you have to have faith in yourself,
- 10:05first of all. You have to have faith in yourself that what you have
- 10:08to say is important to you first and foremost and might have an impact on the world.
- 10:12And then you just have to have the resolve and the meaning in what you're doing
- 10:16to get to the end. Cause creating is freaking hard.
- 10:19It's really, really tough. Nobody's like,
- 10:21I love everything I do write it.
- 10:23You know, no, it's torture. But you gotta,
- 10:25you gotta.
- 10:27You gotta find that motivation inside yourself to get you to the end.
- 10:29And then there are just so many ways to impact people with what you have to say.
- 10:32So I don't know. I would never wanna wanna work in any other venue.
- 10:36this is the place for me.
- 10:38So when you're kind of working on the story,
- 10:40and granted I we're not gonna spoil anything,
- 10:42obviously, but do you feel like your understanding and relationship changed with
- 10:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:46these characters now that you've had like more life experience,
- 10:48things have changed as well?
- 10:50Yeah.
- 10:50Well, you know, I certainly ~ had to think about how to make the
- 10:53sh the movie relevant. I had to ~ think about what gaming is now,
- 10:57where these characters might be many years later.
- 11:00Yeah, it was a lot to think about and also still retain the fun of the show
- 11:04and the spirit. ~ you know, that's why I didn't even bother taking this movie
- 11:09to Hollywood. Like I'm not gonna I don't I don't need other producers
- 11:12who don't know anything about gamers or the or the show.
- 11:15To run their numbers and run, you know,
- 11:17look at the stats and be like,
- 11:18well, I can give you this much,
- 11:19but you have to change these 17 things.
- 11:21I'm like, no, I'd rather not. So that's why Kickstarter Exactly.
- 11:25You wanna make it while you are.
- 11:26And in 2008, I put a PayPal button up on the website that we had,
- 11:31and we finished season one with viewer donations.
- 11:34We were one of the, I believe that we're the first crowdfunded on
- 11:36the internet thing before Kickstarter even started.
- 11:39So to be on Kickstarter now, doing my own project for the first time.
- 11:43It's just a real gift. So ~ yeah,
- 11:46I think people will like it and I hope they support it and I hope we get
- 11:49to make it and actually have somebody else do craft service.
- 11:51That would be really great.
- 11:53Well you think about there's already twenty four thousand people that
- 11:55are interested in it, that have liked it and followed the project.
- 11:58So it there is such a fan base that are ready to see this come to fruition after
- 12:03all this time.
- 12:04You know, that's the I the real irony.
- 12:06Like when I was doing tabletop back in the day,
- 12:08200,000 viewers, you know, we get the first couple days.
- 12:12And that wasn't good enough for Hollywood to like do more,
- 12:15you know? And yet, look what we could do.
- 12:18If we get 50,000 backers, we have a movie with a great budget and we could bring
- 12:23the movie to life in the way that I envision.
- 12:25That's that that's the num that number is nothing to Hollywood,
- 12:29but the power is so strong with the fans to make things happen.
- 12:33And so, you know, I think it's really inspirational.
- 12:36You don't have to have millions of people to be able to make something successful.
- 12:41And that's what I've always believed in.
- 12:43My community has gotten me here over the years,
- 12:46through depression, through physical problems.
- 12:49Like that's why I'm I'm still here.
- 12:51And, you know, I think that's a good lesson as a creator.
- 12:54Less but more engagement is just the key to everything that's good and long term
- 12:59and as a as a creator in life.
- 13:01And what I love about this too is it also kind of brings parallels to what
- 13:05the guild is about community and people and you're all coming together
- 13:08Yeah.
- 13:09to bring to life this project.
- 13:11That's kind of in line with the message of the guild.
- 13:14Yeah, it's it is. It absolutely is.
- 13:16And it it's really important to me.
- 13:18I don't consider my ~ creativity something I want to hoard.
- 13:21I certainly could have been much more business savvy and ~ it it
- 13:27at certain points in my life, but I kept the IP for the for the the show.
- 13:32So this is possible now only because when I got fancy people approaching
- 13:37me to buy the rights to it, I was like,
- 13:39Well, are do you know what the fans want?
- 13:42Do you know the heart of the show?
- 13:44Do you know why we're here and why this is successful?
- 13:47Because, you know, just to work with somebody fancy,
- 13:50maybe maybe make a little bit of money,
- 13:51like that's not good enough for me.
- 13:54This means something more to me.
- 13:56And I hope the movie is kind of a celebration of that.
- 13:58Cause you're right. We could do things together against all odds,
- 14:01against the the suits, we could do it.
- 14:03So you mentioned that kind of the idea of fifty thousand followers
- 14:06or backers would be fantastic.
- 14:08But as we hopefully get more and more,
- 14:10do you feel like there's push goals that would happen for the film with more
- 14:13and more backers?
- 14:15Yeah, so we do have 24,000 people following the page before we launch.
- 14:19That is the number one followed movie,
- 14:21I think, in Kickstarter history,
- 14:22they told us. So it's very exciting.
- 14:23That's incredible.
- 14:25~ we will see how we grow and build up into the 20th and then beyond.
- 14:30~ we definitely have stretch goals.
- 14:32I will say that movies are very expensive,
- 14:34right? And so we you know we'll start with an initial goal that'll be
- 14:35Yeah, for sure.
- 14:39a version of the movie we want to do,
- 14:40and if we'll
- 14:41hopefully get more money so that we can build the vision and have more production
- 14:46value and costumes and all of that.
- 14:48~ it'll be step by step. But I yes,
- 14:50I this is so weird to plan for Kickstarters because we are planning
- 14:55for disaster scenario. What happens if nobody donates and what happens
- 14:58if so many people donate? We have extra money and what are we going do with it?
- 15:01We have those both covered. And of course my dream scenario is to do more than just
- 15:06the movie, but you know what? I have to temper my expectations and be like,
- 15:06Sure.
- 15:11Just do what you've done the best you can.
- 15:13Let's see what the fans want.
- 15:14Well, I hope that they all turn out for this because again,
- 15:16this is so incredible. This is a project that everybody should be looking for.
- 15:20And I think that this is the way to move forward with creative projects as well.
- 15:23~ but for those who maybe are looking for more information about
- 15:23Yeah, thank you.
- 15:27the project or where they can back it,
- 15:29where's the best way to kind of get information about that?
- 15:31Yeah, if you sign up at watchthild.com before the 20th when we launch at 8 a.m.
- 15:35Pacific, you will get a free pin that will be sent to you if you later back
- 15:40at a physical level. So if you pledge and get something physical sent to you,
- 15:43you get the free pin only if you sign up before the 20th.
- 15:46So get over there, put your email in,
- 15:48it's free. ~ cover your bases.
- 15:50And then after that, we'll be on Kickstarter,
- 15:52but always watchtheguild.com will be a place that will direct you to
- 15:55the best place for to ~ interact with us.
- 15:58Well, thank you so much, Felicia,
- 15:59for being here and chatting with us today.
- 16:01It's been an absolute pleasure and we are so excited for the guild film to arrive.
- 16:05So thank you so much for being here.
- 16:05Thank you, Brian. Thanks.
- 16:06And as Felicia said, you can get more information about the guild movie
