- 0:00Speaker 1: Sent to live with relatives in rural Indiana, a young
- 0:03Speaker 1: boy finds a new purpose in the world of harness racing.
- 0:08Speaker 1: On October second, nineteen forty four, CBS brought that story
- 0:13Speaker 1: to Lux Radio Theater in Home in Indiana, Episode four
- 0:17Speaker 1: hundred and fifty one, adapted from the twentieth Century Fox
- 0:21Speaker 1: film released earlier that year and based on George Agnew
- 0:24Speaker 1: Chamberlain's novel Phantom Philly, Walter Brennan, Charlotte Greenwood, Gene Crane,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and June Haver reprise their film roles as the young
- 0:35Speaker 1: newcomer comes to know the horse farm, the racetrack, and
- 0:39Speaker 1: the people whose lives are tied to both. Lux presents
- 0:43Speaker 1: this hour under the sponsorship of Spry. Here is the
- 0:47Speaker 1: original broadcast.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Lux presents Hollywood.
- 1:02Speaker 3: The Luck Radio Theater brings you Walter Brennan, Charlotte Greenwood,
- 1:06Speaker 3: Edward Ryan, Jene Crane, and June Haver in Home in Indiana,
- 1:12Speaker 3: Ladies and Gentlemen.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Your producer, mister Cecil B.
- 1:15Speaker 4: De Mill.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Readings from Hollywood Ladies and Gentlemen. In his book America
- 1:26Speaker 5: Learns to Play Fast. Ray Dulles has told the history
- 1:30Speaker 5: of our country in terms of sport. He points out
- 1:34Speaker 5: something I never knew before that the past time which
- 1:36Speaker 5: has most intrigued us through the years, and which has
- 1:39Speaker 5: most closely paralleled our history and development, is the trotting race.
- 1:44Speaker 5: Fast racing, of course, belongs to the ages, but the
- 1:47Speaker 5: trotting race belongs to America, and to America alone. And
- 1:52Speaker 5: tonight's Lux Radio Theater play Home in Indiana, the twentieth
- 1:56Speaker 5: century Fox hit brings you some of the fascination and
- 1:59Speaker 5: excitement of the hut Honest Race, a story of love
- 2:02Speaker 5: and jealousy, of heart break and triumph against the background
- 2:05Speaker 5: of thundering hoofs and swirling dust.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And in their original.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Screen rolls you'll hear Walter Brennan, Charlotte Greenwood, Jean Crane,
- 2:15Speaker 5: and June Haven. When I saw Home in Indiana, it
- 2:18Speaker 5: seems so typically American in its background and color and
- 2:22Speaker 5: spirit that I was mighty glad that it would go
- 2:24Speaker 5: by short ways to our soldiers overseas, for whom the
- 2:28Speaker 5: Lux Radio Theater is, I think, a friendly and familiar
- 2:32Speaker 5: link with Home.
- 2:34Speaker 4: We get a lot of.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Mail from our overseas audience and from their parents. One
- 2:39Speaker 5: mother forwarded us a letter from her son, a sergeant
- 2:42Speaker 5: in New Guinea who tells of doing his own washing
- 2:45Speaker 5: in a tub of water heated with a home made
- 2:47Speaker 5: blow torch and generously studded with lux flakes. His simple
- 2:53Speaker 5: directions are are marvel, we just dumped the daily clothes
- 2:57Speaker 5: in and then stir until the water is deady well,
- 3:02Speaker 5: blow to our cheating. May be something new in washing clothes,
- 3:05Speaker 5: but not lux flakes, even in the South Pacific. And
- 3:08Speaker 5: now for our play as the curtain rises, are like
- 3:11Speaker 5: one of Home in Indiana, starring Water Brennan as Thunder,
- 3:15Speaker 5: Charlotte Greenwood as Penny, Edward Ryan as Spark, Jean Crane
- 3:20Speaker 5: as char and June Have as Creekley. If you've ever
- 3:35Speaker 5: been to an old passioned corvy fair, you know that
- 3:38Speaker 5: the king of the fair is the trotting horse, and
- 3:40Speaker 5: the supreme events is harness racing. You know too that
- 3:44Speaker 5: the farm hand, with one horse, which he himself has
- 3:46Speaker 5: trained and he himself may drive, is every bit the
- 3:49Speaker 5: equal of the carry square. For harness racing is the
- 3:52Speaker 5: sport of gentlemen rich and poor, competing not just for
- 3:56Speaker 5: money and silver cups, but for the sheer love of
- 3:59Speaker 5: the tuter hoss and the betterment of the brood and
- 4:02Speaker 5: the breed.
- 4:08Speaker 4: We got the telegram before we got the boy come
- 4:11Speaker 4: from Connecticut. It did from some sheriff up there a.
- 4:15Speaker 6: Visitor coming, Penny a boy.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Now read it to me what to say?
- 4:21Speaker 6: This will introduce your nephew, Spotts Taunton, who was bequeathed
- 4:25Speaker 6: to you by your sister, the late Miss Henrietta Boat.
- 4:29Speaker 6: As you may know, Miss Henrietta raised the boy since
- 4:32Speaker 6: your other sister's death several years ago. In accordance with
- 4:36Speaker 6: Miss Henrietta's wishes, we have paid his bus there and
- 4:39Speaker 6: therefore assume no further responsibility. He should arrive early Thursday afternoon.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Howl's the boy.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Thunder don't exactly know. Reckon about sixteen.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I'll fix up the spare room Thursday, said.
- 4:54Speaker 6: Hunh tomorrow, I'll get into town. Need him.
- 5:00Speaker 4: That's how Sparky Thornton comes around house Farm. When Thunder
- 5:04Speaker 4: opened the door and told him to come in, there
- 5:07Speaker 4: was a funny sort of look in his eyes, like
- 5:10Speaker 4: he was trying to find another door that would let
- 5:13Speaker 4: him out.
- 5:21Speaker 6: Is this here's your aunt Penelope son.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Hello, Sparky, come here. You a bad boy, That's what
- 5:29Speaker 4: they say you huh, well, lead the place on earth
- 5:32Speaker 4: is more room for a boy to be bed in.
- 5:34Speaker 6: The roundhouse farm.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Got itself so overgrowed with quiet that anything had come
- 5:38Speaker 4: as a relief.
- 5:40Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am, show.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Him where to stow his duneage, thundered this way.
- 5:45Speaker 6: Sent, I'll show you your field shows too.
- 5:50Speaker 4: I was in the kitchen later when I saw Sparky
- 5:52Speaker 4: disappearing through the corn field. I might have called thunder,
- 5:56Speaker 4: But if the boy was going to stay, he'd have
- 5:58Speaker 4: to decide for myself. I knew what he'd see beyond
- 6:02Speaker 4: the corn field, a board fence six feet tall. Let's
- 6:06Speaker 4: keep us apart from that farm beyond for eighteen years,
- 6:10Speaker 4: But sure as fate he'd be a climbing the fence
- 6:13Speaker 4: and seeing what for?
- 6:17Speaker 8: Why?
- 6:18Speaker 9: Why?
- 6:19Speaker 4: After gosh, gosh, all right.
- 6:28Speaker 10: Get down there, mister Oh, who's you smooching around here?
- 6:32Speaker 7: I'm spot dunting, mister Boat's my uncle?
- 6:35Speaker 4: Who are you? I works for your uncle? I'm topping
- 6:38Speaker 4: what's you fool around that fence?
- 6:40Speaker 11: For?
- 6:40Speaker 4: I was just looking all those horses and stables and
- 6:44Speaker 4: an exercise track roundhouse.
- 6:46Speaker 7: She'll make that place look like the poorhouse roundhouse.
- 6:49Speaker 10: This before you was born more records, was busted by
- 6:52Speaker 10: horses trade my mister Thunder, and then they got horseshoes
- 6:55Speaker 10: next door.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Oh I didn't know mister Boat was a trainer. What's that?
- 7:00Speaker 6: That's lady?
- 7:02Speaker 4: My uncle's got horses.
- 7:04Speaker 10: Only one lady, the only one.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Left for could could I see her?
- 7:09Speaker 10: Come along?
- 7:10Speaker 6: Boy?
- 7:14Speaker 7: Gosh, she's sure he's pretty?
- 7:17Speaker 4: Hello? Is that lady? See, tuppy? How old is? Why?
- 7:22Speaker 4: When she's blind?
- 7:23Speaker 6: Lying?
- 7:24Speaker 4: Is deep sleep?
- 7:25Speaker 12: Lady?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Poll old lad No, pull, old lady. What lady don't
- 7:30Speaker 2: need no more eyes?
- 7:32Speaker 10: Playing your horses with two good eyes that he ain't
- 7:34Speaker 10: never see what the lady sees?
- 7:36Speaker 4: She see the finish line?
- 7:38Speaker 7: Fus, tuppy, When does mister Boat work her out?
- 7:42Speaker 10: You don't work out? I gives her a mile a
- 7:44Speaker 10: day on the lead ring. Maybe sometime I'll let you
- 7:48Speaker 10: take her if you're going to be around.
- 7:50Speaker 7: Uh sure, sure I'll be around.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I told her next morning how to find his way
- 8:01Speaker 4: to school. He started out all right, but he never
- 8:04Speaker 4: did see school. He went back again to that board
- 8:08Speaker 4: fence and climbed over and headed straight for one of
- 8:11Speaker 4: their stables had a man even stallion in there, But
- 8:15Speaker 4: Marky didn't know that. Whoa boy? Whoa?
- 8:18Speaker 9: Easy now, just trying to get through that doll?
- 8:20Speaker 7: Boy? Whoa whoa? Eh that's better. That's better.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Hey, you crazy fool, get away from there.
- 8:29Speaker 7: I'm a coming out, not a going in.
- 8:31Speaker 2: The devil as you come from.
- 8:33Speaker 7: Came through in there, that's tall.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Don't you lie to me, boy, I'll be there.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Or maybe if I was to go back through there
- 8:38Speaker 4: and out again, maybe you could use me as a handyman.
- 8:41Speaker 6: Get away from that stall before you get killed.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Oh it's all right, hey, quiet boy, easy now, easy,
- 8:48Speaker 4: see he's not afraid of me.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Well he said, now, whoa boy?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Hey, get out of there. Yes, sir, I'm sorry I
- 8:58Speaker 2: called you a liar boy.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Oh oh you all right, sir?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, go back to work.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Hey, what's going on?
- 9:04Speaker 6: Nothing at all?
- 9:06Speaker 4: Hey son?
- 9:06Speaker 2: How come you know so much about handling the killer
- 9:08Speaker 2: like that? Hamil car chief?
- 9:09Speaker 4: Huh?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Is he that sign on the stall?
- 9:12Speaker 4: Hamel card chief? Visitors? Keep away go to our bull,
- 9:16Speaker 4: are you mister bull? I work for mister Booble, you see,
- 9:19Speaker 4: he's our training and I'm mister Boole's daughter. Say Jed.
- 9:23Speaker 4: It seems to me there ought to be a place
- 9:24Speaker 4: here for a man not scared of the chief.
- 9:26Speaker 7: Huh, thank you.
- 9:28Speaker 4: He must be terribly brave or terribly dumb. What's your name?
- 9:33Speaker 7: I'm spark daunting, and I guess I'm dumb.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Can you drive a sulky sparky?
- 9:37Speaker 13: Yes, sir, Hellen, come along, Let's see your dog a
- 9:39Speaker 13: couple of laps.
- 9:40Speaker 7: Gosh, sure have got a lot of horses around here.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Yeah, phew, it's a way boy, daddy.
- 9:50Speaker 6: Hi, Hey, who's that driving new kid around here?
- 9:54Speaker 4: How does he top jerking those brains?
- 9:56Speaker 2: I'll ask him when he pulls out, all ask him.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Now, come on, boy, hey, what's the race? What are
- 10:03Speaker 4: you trying to do? Get off the track?
- 10:05Speaker 7: Do you want to get hurt?
- 10:06Speaker 4: No? And I don't want the mayor to read? Do
- 10:08Speaker 4: you watch out? Now?
- 10:09Speaker 7: All right? I'll supper for you.
- 10:14Speaker 4: With a rotless pizza driving I've seen in all my days.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Oh, she's a crazy horse, got a tough mom.
- 10:18Speaker 4: She's not crazy, and she's got a mouth like a baby.
- 10:21Speaker 7: I suppose you could hold her in. Get out of there.
- 10:23Speaker 4: I'll show you.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Okay, show me tie up my horse.
- 10:26Speaker 4: And watch hard.
- 10:26Speaker 7: And if you need help, oh I will.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Gee.
- 10:33Speaker 6: She sure can drive Huh, she's pretty good sparking.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I'm sorry I did some bad I didn't think it
- 10:39Speaker 4: was any different from regular driving.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Eh, no harm done, But it takes hands.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Huh hands those two things. Your ten fingers are tied to.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Star took at char Why she can talk to a
- 10:50Speaker 4: horse and a whisper with her hands? See? Yeah, well,
- 10:57Speaker 4: thanks a lot for letting me drive.
- 10:58Speaker 7: Good Bye, goodbye boy?
- 11:02Speaker 4: Hey what's he leaving for? What are you expecting to
- 11:05Speaker 4: do after the way you bowled them off? Oh?
- 11:07Speaker 9: I guess it wasn't very nice.
- 11:08Speaker 4: And ea, he made me so mad the way he
- 11:10Speaker 4: saw it on Trumpet's mouth, and then asked if I
- 11:12Speaker 4: could hold her in. Well, boys never like it if
- 11:14Speaker 4: you show them up, you ought to.
- 11:16Speaker 6: Remember that by all means charge.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Oh pooh, Yes, you gotta have hands to drive behind
- 11:29Speaker 4: a trapping horse. I found out long after how Sparky
- 11:33Speaker 4: got his all the time thunder and me figured he
- 11:37Speaker 4: was going to school. Sparky was back of our stable,
- 11:40Speaker 4: learning another kind of lessons from the ladies. And old Tuffy.
- 11:45Speaker 7: Oh, come on, Tuffy, how much longer do I have
- 11:48Speaker 7: to do this?
- 11:48Speaker 4: You want hands, don't you? Well?
- 11:50Speaker 10: Sure, but then keep walking keep walking till you can
- 11:54Speaker 10: feel through the lines what she is thinking? Then what,
- 11:57Speaker 10: and keep walking till you can answer right back.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Could you get it?
- 12:02Speaker 4: You got it all right? Got it so well that
- 12:07Speaker 4: one day he went over the fence again, drove from
- 12:10Speaker 4: mister Bruce, and got himself a job.
- 12:13Speaker 13: I don't know how you learned the quick sun, but
- 12:15Speaker 13: you're sure learned, and you can use me.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yeah, see me in the morning.
- 12:18Speaker 6: I believe I can, all right, most take this hold.
- 12:21Speaker 4: She did, Swells, Parky. Thanks, And you aren't mad at
- 12:24Speaker 4: me for showing you up? Mad if it hadn't been
- 12:28Speaker 4: for you, I've never learned a drive ride. But I
- 12:30Speaker 4: told Creek Cree who oh you know mister Bull's daughter. Oh,
- 12:34Speaker 4: cree Cree. Our real name is Christopher, just like mine's
- 12:37Speaker 4: short for Charlotte.
- 12:38Speaker 7: I don't see her around today.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Well, she's at boarding school. You've finished school, haven't you. Well?
- 12:45Speaker 7: How could I get a job if I hadn't?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Well, I better go now, I'll see him les, Parky.
- 12:50Speaker 7: Yeah, goodbye, jarl Want some more coffee an penny?
- 13:04Speaker 4: No?
- 13:05Speaker 7: No, I'm just sure gonna be late for supper. Yes,
- 13:08Speaker 7: what's he doing up there? Sounds just like he's drunk.
- 13:12Speaker 4: He is drunk. Oh, I didn't know, ant Penny, I
- 13:17Speaker 4: didn't mean anything. It's all right, Sparky. Look here, ma'am.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Don't you get to thinking wrong things about Thunder. He's
- 13:25Speaker 4: a good man, but once the hear comes spring, he
- 13:28Speaker 4: gets to hear the horses trotting. When that happens, seems
- 13:32Speaker 4: like you can't no ways hold back from drowning out
- 13:34Speaker 4: the sound with liquor. Now that's all there is to it.
- 13:38Speaker 4: I don't want to be button in. But what happened
- 13:40Speaker 4: ant Penny, You know between him and mister bull well boy,
- 13:45Speaker 4: some men quarrel over women. With Godar Bool and Thunder.
- 13:49Speaker 4: It was a horse eighteen years ago. They was great friends,
- 13:54Speaker 4: then partners too. They had a mayor in a race,
- 13:58Speaker 4: but something happened to one of her legs and she lost.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Godar didn't even wait to get her to the stables
- 14:05Speaker 4: to shoot her. And when Thunders saw him do that, he.
- 14:09Speaker 7: Just went crazy.
- 14:11Speaker 4: He beat up on Godar till he n most killed him. Well,
- 14:17Speaker 4: that was the beginning, Sparky. Godar set out to ruin Thunder,
- 14:21Speaker 4: but Thunder fought him back. All he needed was money
- 14:24Speaker 4: to keep roundhouse farmer going, and he figured on winning
- 14:27Speaker 4: it in the next big race, but he lost. Seems
- 14:31Speaker 4: like after that he lost most everything. Don't don't have
- 14:36Speaker 4: to tell you no more. You're seeing the rest for yourself.
- 14:39Speaker 4: But if the stables were fixed.
- 14:41Speaker 7: Up, and if there were horses again.
- 14:43Speaker 4: And fools, he wouldn't have those spells. Maybe, But the
- 14:47Speaker 4: stables ain't fixed up, and there ain't no horses except lady,
- 14:52Speaker 4: and no folds. Yeah, well, I'll I'll do the dishes.
- 14:59Speaker 4: We Sparky, I'll just sit here a while, I said,
- 15:05Speaker 4: leave the dishes, yes, ma'am. Good night. That night I
- 15:14Speaker 4: heard voices in the back of the house. Thunder was
- 15:16Speaker 4: sleeping it off, and I was scared to wake him.
- 15:19Speaker 4: I went to the window below. In the moonlight, I
- 15:23Speaker 4: saw Sparky in one of the colored boys from the
- 15:25Speaker 4: Blue Farm. And then I saw someone else. It was Charred,
- 15:30Speaker 4: coming up quietly behind the berry bushes. They didn't see her,
- 15:35Speaker 4: they didn't know that she was listening to that. You
- 15:37Speaker 4: shouldn't have done it, Sparky.
- 15:39Speaker 2: You shouldn't have brought a hamlicot chief over it.
- 15:41Speaker 7: But nobody saw me. Nobody knows but you.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Why'd you wake me up?
- 15:45Speaker 2: And then I wouldn't have known me.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Mister boll found his art. He bought me a lot.
- 15:49Speaker 7: But you won't find out.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Hammer Catchief's back in his stable, and all we gotta
- 15:53Speaker 4: do is put the planks back in the fence. Listen,
- 15:55Speaker 4: most lady's going to have a fall now. But what
- 15:58Speaker 4: about the paper? You got to help me get the
- 16:01Speaker 4: papers for the four? Maybe I can do that, but
- 16:04Speaker 4: not without you got a hundred dollars? Oh mos? Where
- 16:07Speaker 4: am I gonna get one hundred dollars? Well?
- 16:08Speaker 2: How about mister thunder?
- 16:10Speaker 7: Oh I can't tell him about it until I get
- 16:11Speaker 7: the papers.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I got eight dollars in one a minute, and maybe
- 16:14Speaker 2: I don't go.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Let I'm got twelve so far for exercising horses.
- 16:18Speaker 11: Let's see, there's twenty we eighty dollars shy on it?
- 16:23Speaker 7: Yeah, well I'll get it somehow. I'm getting oh Loe, No.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Most, we'll go fix that fence.
- 16:37Speaker 7: Morning, daddy, morning?
- 16:39Speaker 4: Hey?
- 16:40Speaker 2: What's the matter with you?
- 16:41Speaker 4: Daddy? When is it all right not to tell? Why?
- 16:44Speaker 6: You know?
- 16:44Speaker 2: The rules? You never tell a secret except for cash.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Property are Like?
- 16:47Speaker 4: How daddy, you're wonderful? Have you got twenty dollars?
- 16:50Speaker 2: Twenty dollar. Do you want twenty dollars for?

- 16:56Speaker 2: Well here, but it's coming out of your allows, young lady.
- 16:59Speaker 2: And don't you for.

- 17:07Speaker 4: What are you doing? Oh? Helping nature? Little?
- 17:10Speaker 9: Huh?
- 17:11Speaker 4: Plucking my eyebrows? Do let me do yours for you?
- 17:13Speaker 2: Oh?
- 17:14Speaker 4: No, daddy grass me today? Come on, charl he would
- 17:16Speaker 4: notice it the couple.
- 17:17Speaker 9: What's the sense of doing again?
- 17:19Speaker 4: Look, Creek, I need sixty dollars. Sixty dollars? What's for? Well? Uh,
- 17:26Speaker 4: I can't tell Ooh, char it's me who don't have
- 17:30Speaker 4: any secret. Please cleekie, don't ask me? Please? Where would
- 17:34Speaker 4: I get sixty dollars from? Your dad? Tell me you
- 17:36Speaker 4: need new boots or something? Well, all right, i'll try.

- 18:23Speaker 4: you here. But eighty dollars, well, well it's alone, lord charge. Thanks,
- 18:31Speaker 4: that's all right, Sparky. But I can get mister Boole
- 18:34Speaker 4: signed a certificate without him finding out.
- 18:36Speaker 11: Now, don't you worry about that. You took care of
- 18:38Speaker 11: the fee. I'll arrange about making it legal.
- 18:40Speaker 4: But how or mister Boole?
- 18:42Speaker 7: He don't like that.
- 18:43Speaker 11: Mean old chief holes, so when I brings him the
- 18:45Speaker 11: papers to sign, he don't never bother.
- 18:48Speaker 2: None about reasons. Now, I got seven others here for
- 18:51Speaker 2: in the sign. This one is just gonna get lost
- 18:53Speaker 2: in the show.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I'm glad you're happy, Sparky.
- 18:57Speaker 7: Happy. Huh, I'm so happy.
- 18:59Speaker 4: I whose cars that jar? Gordon Bradley's. He's home from college.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Came over to see creek cree.
- 19:05Speaker 7: Well, if college is over, I guess school is over.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Huh, yeah, it was over yesterday.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Why well then I've got no more excuse for being
- 19:12Speaker 7: over here all day.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Oh, I thought you said you were through school. I
- 19:16Speaker 4: didn't say school was through with me though. Now I'll
- 19:19Speaker 4: have to help Thunder with the farming. Couldn't I come
- 19:21Speaker 4: over and see you? Sure you could come swimming in
- 19:24Speaker 4: the pond and hand Penny and think you and Creek
- 19:26Speaker 4: Wee were friends of mine from school?
- 19:28Speaker 7: Do you think Greek Cree had come?
- 19:29Speaker 4: Oh? Sure, we'll ask a wheel a char I gotta
- 19:32Speaker 4: go now, and thanks a lot, and be sure and
- 19:35Speaker 4: ask Greek Creed huh. Oh should start you up? I'll
- 19:38Speaker 4: ask her.
- 19:51Speaker 3: We would be back in a minute. Would act too
- 19:53Speaker 3: of home in Indiana. But first, let's listen to one
- 19:56Speaker 3: wife's embarrassing moment. She's in a restaurant with her soldier husband.
- 20:01Speaker 5: When I'm away from you, Peggy, it seems you can't
- 20:03Speaker 5: be as pretty as I remember.
- 20:05Speaker 6: And when you see me, why you're even prettier than
- 20:07Speaker 6: I thought.
- 20:08Speaker 14: Silly, I'm just an old married woman slaving away. It's
- 20:12Speaker 14: a good thing you look at my face instead of
- 20:14Speaker 14: my hands.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Oh, I wish you didn't have to work so hard. Angel,
- 20:17Speaker 6: But say, Peggy, there's a CEO and I think he's
- 20:19Speaker 6: coming over here.
- 20:20Speaker 5: Oh Tom, Old everything good evening, chargeant, good evening.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Third, this is my wife, Major Barnes, happy to meet
- 20:26Speaker 3: your ma'am.
- 20:26Speaker 14: Oh, how do you do? Tom?
- 20:32Speaker 9: Why did I have to meet him?
- 20:34Speaker 6: Why?
- 20:34Speaker 2: Ever?
- 20:34Speaker 4: Or not? Honey?
- 20:35Speaker 14: When we shook hands way, he seemed to stare at mine.
- 20:38Speaker 14: They're so awful, so red and rough.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Chances are the Major wasn't thinking about Peggy's hands at all.
- 20:46Speaker 3: But poor Peggy, those dishpan hands, they seemed as big
- 20:49Speaker 3: as a house made her ill at ease. Now, if
- 20:52Speaker 3: you've been embarrassed that way, if you think your hands
- 20:54Speaker 3: have to be red and painfully rough because of dishwashing,
- 20:58Speaker 3: just do one simple thing works. Change from strong soaps
- 21:02Speaker 3: to lux flakes for dishes. Lux really does help your
- 21:05Speaker 3: hands to become soft and smooth again. Scores of women
- 21:08Speaker 3: proved that lux takes dishpan redness away. You can change
- 21:12Speaker 3: dishpan hands to luxe hends for less than a penny
- 21:15Speaker 3: a day.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Now, Mister the Mill returns to the microphone.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Act two of Home in Indiana, starring Walter Brennan as Thunder,
- 21:24Speaker 5: Charlotte Greenwood as Penny, Edward Ryan as Spark Jeane Crane
- 21:28Speaker 5: as Cha and June hav As Creakery.

- 21:45Speaker 4: summer they come to swim there. Crekrey in char and
- 21:48Speaker 4: Gordon Bradley. I'd see him at times, shar A following
- 21:53Speaker 4: Sparky around, let him with no eyes except for Creekrey,
- 21:56Speaker 4: who met the man, I guess and Creaky smiling at
- 22:01Speaker 4: Sparky with a kind of a smile you couldn't tell
- 22:03Speaker 4: from a laugh. And that's a woman. And then one
- 22:07Speaker 4: evening Thunder found out about lady how she was going
- 22:11Speaker 4: to have a pole, and he called sparking in his veins,
- 22:14Speaker 4: standing out on his foreheady, but his voice low, like
- 22:17Speaker 4: he was saving all his wild strength to lay down
- 22:20Speaker 4: on the boy.
- 22:21Speaker 6: I just come from the stable, boy, and I got
- 22:23Speaker 6: a strap in my hands.

- 22:35Speaker 15: You take of a spoiler making her some back, Eli
- 22:38Speaker 15: crol Way yut he.
- 22:42Speaker 4: That's enough, Thunder, Heaven helped you. If you hit that
- 22:45Speaker 4: boy again, I'll get the rifle. I swear, I will.
- 22:48Speaker 6: I couldn't help my shelf. I just couldn't help my chef.
- 22:50Speaker 7: I've been wanting to tell you thunder anyway.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Here whchare the certificate for the four?
- 22:57Speaker 4: When it comes certificate Hamacott chiefs the sound.
- 23:00Speaker 6: Why are you fool? You might have been hurt bad?

- 23:50Speaker 6: I got a lot of long range figure.
- 23:52Speaker 4: In the dude.
- 23:54Speaker 7: So everything's all right now, boy, everything's fine.
- 23:57Speaker 4: No it ain't. It's a shame. There ain't nothing to
- 24:00Speaker 4: be done about it now once bit, just say a bit?
- 24:03Speaker 4: What's bit me? The horse bug? And it'll never let
- 24:07Speaker 4: you rest? However, so be it. Why can't I go
- 24:21Speaker 4: in there too? Tuppies in there, Moses in there? But

- 37:17Speaker 4: Yes, Sally, it's still Lethier.
- 37:18Speaker 16: Isn't it, even though we passed February twenty nine.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Yes, but if you found someone you want to propose to,
- 37:23Speaker 2: you'd better hurry up.
- 37:24Speaker 16: No such luck. But I did find an interesting leapier superstition.
- 37:28Speaker 4: If a girl proposes.
- 37:30Speaker 16: To a man and he turns her down, then he
- 37:32Speaker 16: has to give her a silk dress.

- 37:35Speaker 3: rayon do?
- 37:36Speaker 4: Sure?
- 37:37Speaker 16: The rayons we get now are just as pretty as silks,
- 37:40Speaker 16: and we wear.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Them for everything and give them the same Cara silks,
- 37:43Speaker 3: don't you.
- 37:43Speaker 16: Sally, Well, almost the same using luck slakes, of course,
- 37:47Speaker 16: But rayons do lead a few special touches, like handling
- 37:51Speaker 16: them extra gently. We must never rub or ring rayons
- 37:55Speaker 16: or use too hot water or strong soaps. Why treating
- 37:58Speaker 16: them that way can leave the color's face literally washed out,
- 38:03Speaker 16: just goes to their former cells.
- 38:04Speaker 3: That's a sad story these days, when we're supposed to
- 38:07Speaker 3: make things last.
- 38:08Speaker 16: Oh, but it's true. We prove it with actual washed tests.
- 38:12Speaker 16: Rayon's that were washed the wrong way soon looked old
- 38:15Speaker 16: and drash.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Sure up, Sally, remember the happy ending. The things that
- 38:18Speaker 3: were washed the luxe way stayed bright and colorful three
- 38:21Speaker 3: times longer.
- 38:22Speaker 16: I guess the moral of this story is never risk
- 38:25Speaker 16: Rayon's in soaps that are strong. Lu's care means loveliness
- 38:29Speaker 16: ever so long.
- 38:30Speaker 2: And now mister de Mill returns to the microphone.

- 53:39Speaker 4: she was taught by the lady. Only then, well then
- 53:42Speaker 4: the track will be plowed, and there'll be a fence
- 53:44Speaker 4: around it, and the barnes will be painted green and white.
- 53:48Speaker 4: And your dad, well he'll be the head train of
- 53:50Speaker 4: for Thunder, and mos Mos will do all the work.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Said topic can just take care of Morden four and
- 53:56Speaker 4: the lady. We're gonna have the top best farming Indiana,
- 54:00Speaker 4: aren't we share? Sure? Sparking you say so? I feel
- 54:05Speaker 4: so good, so darn good.
- 54:23Speaker 3: Our stars were turning for their curking calls in just
- 54:25Speaker 3: a moment. Now, let's eavesdrop. As Carrie the career girl
- 54:30Speaker 3: is getting dressed for work in the morning. She's looking
- 54:32Speaker 3: through a bureau drawer for some stockings.
- 54:35Speaker 9: Oh, this one's got to run in it.
- 54:37Speaker 14: Wait, gosh, seems like they've all got runs. Oh here's
- 54:41Speaker 14: a good one.
- 54:43Speaker 4: Wrong again, I'll never have time for.
- 54:45Speaker 14: Breakfast if I don't find some decent stockings. Let's see,
- 54:49Speaker 14: that's pere I washed last night. Still sort of damp,
- 54:52Speaker 14: but they'll just have to do there. Now, my other
- 54:57Speaker 14: shoe must be under the bed.
- 55:01Speaker 4: Oh another run, and they were practically new. Well, I'll
- 55:06Speaker 4: don't have to wear them till lunch time. Anyway.
- 55:09Speaker 12: Carry carry maybe it's your own fault. Stockings don't wear.
- 55:14Speaker 12: Do you give them proper care? That strong soap you've
- 55:17Speaker 12: been using that's not good for them. And hot water,
- 55:22Speaker 12: oh that's bad. And another thing. Dry those rayns at
- 55:27Speaker 12: least twenty four hours if you want them to wear them.
- 55:30Speaker 12: Threads can't stand strains so well. If you'll give your
- 55:34Speaker 12: stockings gentle lux care, I think you'll find they wear
- 55:37Speaker 12: much longer. Duke warm waters, mild lux flakes, no rubbing,
- 55:43Speaker 12: no twisting, just gentle washing. Strain tests proof stockings last
- 55:48Speaker 12: twice as long that way.
- 55:50Speaker 2: And now back to mister the Mill and our stars.
