UBS, Epstein, and Maxwell: How a Global Bank Helped Finance a Fugitive Hideout · The Vault: The Epstein Files

Speaker 1: What's up everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
0:03
Epstein Chronicles. Now, I'm sure you're tired of hearing me
0:07
talk about the financial sector and their bullshit when it
0:10
comes to Ebstein, but it's impossible to get away from.
0:15
And it wasn't just Epstein, it was everybody around them,
0:18
including Glaine Maxwell. But in the instance of Glaanne Maxwell,
0:23
it wasn't just JP Morgan or the other banks we
0:27
always talk about. It was Swiss based UBS who helped
0:31
facilitate the purchase of her tucked away hideout that she
0:34
ended up getting arrested in. And I think the moral
0:37
of the story is that the financial sector doesn't give
0:40
a damn what kind of crimes people are committing as
0:43
long as they get a fat envelope. As well, it's
0:46
always profits over people, especially in the financial sector. So
0:51
today we have an article from Reuter's and the headline
0:54
exclusive how ubs helped Epstein accomplish Maxwell by her hideout
0:59
tucked away Hey. This article was authored by Tom Simms,
1:03
Naomi Robnick, John O'Donnell, and Lawrence White. In rural New Hampshire,
1:09
a compound on one hundred and fifty six acre estate,
1:12
dub tucked away became Glenn Maxwell's final residence before she
1:16
was charged and arrested in July of twenty twenty. And
1:20
when she was arrested, it was wild. It was pretty unexpected, honestly,
1:25
because at that point there had been no talk about
1:28
even going after Glenn Maxwell. Now they were saying that,
1:32
you know, they were spinning the wheels, they were looking
1:35
into you know, accomplices, associates, whatever. But by that point
1:40
we had no faith. And when she was arrested it
1:43
took me by surprise. Honestly, I figured that she boogeed
1:47
to France or England by that point, why would you
1:51
stay in America. Behind the cash purchase of the one
1:55
point one million dollar home in December all of twenty
1:58
nineteen were fun sent by Swiss banking Giant UBS on
2:03
Maxwell's behalf a month earlier, documents in a cash of
2:06
files released by the Justice Department related to the convicted
2:10
sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's show. The money then cascaded through
2:15
a web of trust and banks to buy the secluded property.
2:20
Ubs processed the transfer for an account link to Maxwell
2:23
three months after US criminal investigators issued a bank a
2:27
grand Jerry subpoena to divulge information on all her financial
2:31
dealings on August sixteenth that year, citing an investigation into
2:36
sex trafficking of children. Imagine being a bank getting that
2:40
kind of information and still doing business with Glenn Maxwell.
2:44
Weren't these banks closing people's accounts out for political beliefs
2:49
or if you like put in a bet on like
2:51
a website or whatever that they don't agree with. Don't
2:54
they like close your account out without any kind of
2:57
conversation or anything. Yeah, we don't want your business anymore,
3:00
keep it moving. But if it's Glenn Maxwell, different story, right,
3:06
Because when you're part of the club, well you're a
3:09
part of the club. UBS told Maxwell by email on
3:12
August first that it would cease doing business with her
3:14
within a month without giving a reason. Well that's a
3:17
good move. I can't even begin to imagine any kind
3:22
of bank that would want to do business with somebody
3:25
like Glenn Maxwell. Aren't there other scummy people for you
3:30
to get in bed with? People that we don't know
3:33
about yet, Because when they do it with people like
3:36
Maxwell or Epstein, it's like they're rubbing our face in it. Right,
3:41
everybody knows what these people are, who they are, what
3:43
they do. Nobody cares. How about that? Stop asking questions?
3:48
Aren't you more interested in what happened to Nancy Guthrie's mom?
3:52
Who cares about Epstein? It's old news. Banks are required
3:57
to show they take measures to prevent their services being
4:00
used to facilitate crime. Failures can lead to large penalties
4:04
by regulators, legal action from victims, and costly reputational damage.
4:09
Lenders must closely monitor high risk customers and curb or
4:13
cut their service if they suspect dubious activity. But that
4:19
doesn't really happen, does it, Not with people like this,
4:23
not until the fire is so hot that you can't
4:25
avoid the flame. But on the way to a three
4:28
alarm fire, what do they care if there's a little
4:30
bit of a third degree burn? Right, they can live
4:33
through that, Just pay another fine and keep the bullshit
4:36
going like they have done throughout history. I don't know
4:42
how many times I have to say it, but I
4:44
guess I'll say it a million more. If you're looking
4:47
for bad guys in the story, when it comes to
4:49
Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein, look no further than the financial sector,
4:55
together with other transactions and investigators' reports. The documents underscore
4:59
the central role UBS played in managing the finances of
5:03
Epstein's chief accomplice, whose proximity to the convicted felon had
5:07
been reported years before the wealth manager had taken her
5:11
on as a client. Well, sam could be said about
5:14
the Clintons. They know what Maxwell was, They didn't care.
5:17
She was still invited to the wedding, wasn't she? She
5:20
was still there in a place of prominence. Wasn't she?
5:23
She was still friendly with all these people, wasn't she?
5:27
None of them cared, Not UBS, not the Clintons, not
5:31
jeff Bezos, nobody, UBS bank Jeffrey Epstein's associate Glenn Maxwell
5:37
for years, and was behind the money that paid for
5:40
her new Hampshire hideout where she was arrested. US Department
5:44
of Justice document show and here's some key dates. July
5:48
sixth Epstein arrested. July twenty second through the thirty first,
5:52
UBS handles Maxwell's card payment, accepts six hundred thousand dollars
5:56
of her funds from Barclays. August first, UBS tells Maxwell
6:01
it will drop her as a client. August sixteenth, US
6:05
Justice official subpoena UBS for information on Maxwell accounts. November twelfth,
6:11
UBS transfers around eight million from Maxwell's account to husband's account.
6:17
December thirteenth, tucked Away Home purchased his clothes twenty twenty.
6:24
June first investigators question where Maxwell's UBS funds have gone.
6:28
July second. Maxwell arrested October thirty first. UBS still holds
6:34
four point one million of Maxwell and spouse's money. Accounting
6:38
report shows the files shed a rare light on how
6:43
banks deal with rich customers and can ignore some of
6:46
the red flags that might disqualify a regular client, said
6:50
Tom Kirschmeyer, a financial crime expert with the London School
6:53
of Economics. Well, I don't have to go to fancy
6:56
lads school to tell you that that's the case. I
7:01
grew up my whole entire life being poor, paying the
7:04
poor people's tax, dealing with the bullshit, getting charged a
7:07
crazy ass rate, just like most of you, while these
7:11
dirtbags were living it up, engaging in all kinds of
7:14
insider trading, and god knows what else. So thank god
7:18
for people like Tom Kirschmeyer from fancy lad school. Banks
7:22
that are told of secret criminal inquiry as UBS was
7:25
typically do everything they can to find publicly available information
7:29
to justify holding up the suspects money. He said, well, yeah,
7:34
they have to have a reason, right, you have to
7:36
go before a judge and say, look, this is what's
7:38
going on. This has been subpoenaed or frozen or whatever
7:42
by the federal government, and we're doing our part. They
7:46
can't arbitrarily do that. In the Southern District of New
7:51
York subpoena, the US attorney told UBS the information was
7:55
part of a criminal felony investigation, requesting it to keep
7:58
the request secret in case the disclosure would impede the probe.
8:02
The file show, so like if you get your email
8:06
or whatever subpoenaed, you might not even know about it
8:09
for a couple of years. You know. If the government's
8:12
like looking into you, you don't get like a visit
8:15
at your house. Hey, look we're looking into you. They
8:18
just go about their business building their case, and when
8:21
they think that they have enough to get you or
8:23
to pigeonhole your ass, then they'll come talk to you.
8:26
Epstein had died in jail days earlier, on August tenth,
8:29
as he faced sex trafficking charges. UBS de client to
8:32
comment on Maxwell or respond to Reuter's questions about why
8:36
the bank processed the payment, saying that it does not
8:39
speak about client related matters. In other words, we got
8:43
caught with our pants down and our hand in the
8:46
cookie jar. Maxwell was convicted in twenty twenty one and
8:54
serving a twenty year prison sentence for recruiting and grooming
8:57
teenage girls for sex, as well as for participate in
9:00
the abuse of minor victims in some instances. Her lawyers
9:04
have argued at the trial that you escape coded for
9:07
Epstein's crimes. A spokesperson for the prison where she's staying
9:12
said Maxwell would not comment. Of course she won't comment.
9:17
She thinks her buddy Donnie Diddles is going to cut
9:20
her a deal, and you know what, he just might.
9:24
I don't put anything beyond this, dude. David Oscar Marcus,
9:29
the criminal defense attorney who last month represented Maxwell in
9:32
a deposition to the House Oversight Committee, declined to comment, Well,
9:36
that's weird, considering that dude never knows when to shut up.
9:40
Pretty odd that he's not running as fat yet pure.
9:43
The pattern that we've seen from our investigations of Epstein
9:46
and a lot of other high net worth criminals is
9:49
that the banks look the other way because they know
9:51
ultra wealthy clients can pack up and take their money
9:54
across the street anytime they want, said Senator Ron Wyden,
9:58
who has scrutinized the money that flows from Epstein's accounts.
10:03
Did he scrutinize his own son's money? Probably a good
10:06
place to start. No, your own son is asking for
10:09
money from Jeffrey Epstein and you're up here yelling and
10:11
screaming about everybody else. I would beat the brakes off
10:15
my son. Oh. I don't care if he's an adult either.
10:18
Meet me at the gym. Strap these gloves on. You're
10:21
making my life difficult. Get this ass beaten. Glenn Maxwell
10:27
wasn't just some minor accessory to Epstein's crimes. She was
10:30
an essential part of his trafficking operation that reached all
10:33
around the globe. And she's accused of participating and abuse herself,
10:36
Wyden said, not accused, She was found guilty of it.
10:39
What do you mean accused? There's no accusations here. This
10:44
vile bipedal serpent was abusing girls. She was bringing girls
10:49
into the belly of the beast, and she was partaking
10:51
in the abuse herself. And I don't care if it
10:55
was one girl or one million. The fact that she
10:59
did it once makes her everything we said she was.
11:05
While information on Epstein's financial dealings remains incomplete, the file
11:09
show he maintained access to major Wall Street firms well
11:13
after his two thousand and eight conviction. Deutsche Bank continued
11:16
servicing Epstein's accounts in twenty nineteen, even after moving to
11:20
cut Ties, while Morgan Stanley opened accounts for Epstein lining
11:24
Truss as late of March of that year. Reuters has reported,
11:29
so we're talking about the year he died. You have
11:31
people like Morgan Stanley saying, you know what, We'll take
11:34
your money. No problem. Park it here, buddy. He did
11:38
his time. Nothing to see here. A bunch of scumbags.
11:42
The late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and
11:46
his jailed accomplist Glenn Maxwell used a host of global
11:50
banks over the years, including before and after their legal
11:53
troubles began. US Department of Justice file show. This list
11:57
is based on a Reuter's analysis of documents in the
12:00
files and is not exhaustive, and we're never going to
12:03
know the full extent of Epstein's finances. We'll never know
12:07
if this scoundrel was good at anything, it was hiding money.
12:11
Maxwell was arrested by FBI agents forcing entry into the
12:15
compound at the end of a half mile dirt driveway
12:18
with no trespassing signs on the outskirts of Bradford, a
12:22
small town known for its colonial white homes and horse farms.
12:26
Maxwell used the name Janet and posed as a journalist
12:29
who wants privacy to buy the house when she met
12:32
with the realtor. According to court documents from a bell hearing, Yeah,
12:38
journalist Janet more like jerk Off Janet. During her arrest,
12:44
FBI agents discovered a mobile phone covered in aluminum foil
12:48
to avoid being traced, and a security team staff by
12:51
former British military members that had been hired to guard
12:54
Maxwell during her stay there. The court document show just
12:58
a normal gal, right, Just a normal person going through
13:01
their life with a security detail and a gigantic bank
13:05
account and hiding away in New Hampshire. Come on, nothing
13:09
to see here, folks, Keep it moving. A document by
13:16
federal US investigators probing Maxwell's money links to UBS to
13:19
the New Hampshire hideout. The file, dated April twelfth, twenty
13:24
twenty two, includes a flow chart detailing the wire transfers
13:28
entitled three point thirty eight Washington Rode Bradford, New Hampshire,
13:32
a reference to the address of her home tucked away.
13:35
The document states that the information's based on US Treasury
13:39
financial crime records and is marked sensitive. Well. Yeah, look,
13:43
they had a whole investigation going, there is no doubt
13:45
about it. And when they thought the iron was hot,
13:49
that's when they struck and the skafuza Glenn Maxwell ended
13:53
up in prison. It shows that UBS transferred nearly eight
13:59
million dollars on November twelfth, twenty nineteen, from an account
14:03
held for a Montepeler Trust, an entity set up by
14:06
Maxwell as it's so called Grant hor Her then husband
14:10
Scott Borgerson was one of the trustees. UBS record show
14:14
the cash went to a ted A Meritrade account, of
14:17
which Borgerson was a custodian. Oh the little tricks we
14:21
picked up from Marpal Jeffy Huh. Days before the transfer,
14:26
on November sixth, twenty nineteen, UBS was still in discussions
14:30
with the FBI on documents who would send as requested
14:34
by the Grand Jerry subpoena of August. Reuters could not
14:37
establish if UBS alerted the authorities to the eight million
14:41
dollar transfer. Probably not. Why would they do you really
14:47
think ubs cared that they were moving money for Kline Maxwell.
14:52
They knew what she was, they didn't give a shit.
14:55
Banks operating in the US are obliged to inform the
14:57
US Treasury of suspicious transaction related to a possible regulatory
15:03
or legal violation within thirty days. Tedameritrade sent the money
15:08
to a trust that was used to buy the house
15:10
in Bradford, New Hampshire. Tedameritrade has since been taken over
15:14
by Charles Schwab, which declined the comment, We're never going
15:18
to get any comments from any of these people. It's
15:21
not even worth asking. US authorities arrested Glen Maxwell at
15:26
a one hundred and fifty six acre compound in New
15:29
Hampshire in twenty twenty. Maxwell and Borgson's combined wealth was
15:34
estimated at around twenty two and a half million as
15:37
of October twenty twenty, according to her report filed to
15:41
court in the Southern District of New York later that
15:43
year by accountants hired by her lawyers at Cohen and Gressor.
15:48
They found that much of her wealth could be traced
15:50
to a twenty fifteen sale of a townhouse on the
15:54
Upper East Side of Manhattan for fifteen million. You mean
15:58
the house that Epstein paid for, gave her the whole
16:00
flip that house cool. So Epstein's money that should have
16:04
been seized. If this was a rico case, like it
16:06
should have been, you catch it on. Yet it remains
16:13
unclear how she came to own the house and what,
16:15
if any due diligence UBS carried out When more than
16:18
fourteen million went into her bank account in twenty sixteen,
16:22
The accountants report stated the proceeds went to a UBS
16:26
account and from there to other UBS accounts to buy properties.
16:30
The Swiss lander held accounts with cash shares and other
16:34
investments for Maxwell and designed her to relationship managers during
16:38
her time as a customer. Document show at one point
16:42
the bank was managing nineteen million for her, Reuters reported
16:45
in February, so I would look for another lawsuit from
16:49
the survivors focusing on UBS. That's definitely coming. Maxwell and
16:56
Borgersen still held four point one million at UBS at
16:59
the and of October twenty twenty, according to accountants. Borgerson
17:04
didn't respond to a request for comment. Well, we know that
17:06
Borgerson left her for some yoga instructor. Maxwell got ghosted
17:12
by Borgerson, who had left his family previously for Maxwell,
17:16
but then did the same thing to her for the
17:18
yoga instructor. I mean, who would have guessed it? A
17:21
guy cheats on his wife with you and then leaves
17:23
you for another broad I'm shocked. Suspicious activity reports, which
17:27
banks used to alert authorities to suspect money movement, shed
17:31
some light on Maxwell's dealings. In the email correspondence between
17:35
the FBI and Federal Law Enforcement in April twenty twenty two,
17:39
the agencies discuss a SAR that suggests the New Hampshire
17:42
property was purchased with proceeds from human trafficking. It's unclear
17:47
which bank alerted regulators to the irregularity of the transaction.
17:52
After her arrest, Ubs filed a SAR covering more than
17:55
eighteen million worth of transfers from her accounts at the
17:58
Swiss Bank to Borgerson between December twenty fourteen and July tenth,
18:03
twenty twenty, according to an untitled and undated document summarizing
18:08
several such filings. The US Justice and Treasury Departments declined
18:12
to comment on Maxwell, her relationship with Ubs, and the
18:16
home purchase, and the banking transactions. British bank Barclays also
18:21
played an important role for Maxwell, according to the files,
18:24
as the only lender she held money with outside the
18:27
US from twenty seventeen. According to the report on her wealth, yeah,
18:32
jess Day. Why do you think she was there? She
18:34
was following jess Day who was over at Barclays. She
18:39
had held two point four million at the bank at
18:41
the end of twenty eighteen, The report shows. In the
18:45
three weeks after Epstein's July sixth, twenty nineteen arrest, Ubs
18:49
received more than six hundred thousand deposits from her Barclay's
18:53
account as she rounded up money to pay for a
18:56
credit card bill. Email exchanges show Barclay declined to comment
19:01
on its dealings with Maxwell. It remains unclear how much
19:04
money Maxwell has left. Talked Away has since changed hands,
19:08
according to property records and real estate agents, and is
19:11
set to be sold again four seasons. South BEA's International
19:15
Realty describes it as a privacy lover's dream and it
19:19
is what a beautiful property. I would love to have
19:22
that property. Holy hell. The problem is Glenn Maxwell bought
19:28
that property with funds that she received due to her
19:32
role in Jeffrey Epstein's criminal enterprise. So the whole thing
19:36
should have been seized at the time, every dollar should
19:38
have been seized, and Maxwell should have been left indigen
19:42
But of course that didn't happen, did it. And as
19:44
far as UBS goes, I would be shocked to see
19:46
them not get sued by the survivors. Now that this
19:50
revelation's out there and that the information the documentation is
19:55
here with it, it's rather obvious that UBS didn't give
19:58
a shit and that they were in engaging in criminal
20:01
activity when they were working with Maxwell. So I would
20:04
expect them to get sued. And I also expect them
20:08
to do the same thing that JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank,
20:10
and Bank of America have done, and that's settle, because
20:13
the last thing the financial sector wants to do when
20:16
it comes to Jeffrey Epstein is get the discovery, all right, folks.
20:22
That's going to do it for this one. All the
20:24
information that goes with this episode can be found in
20:27
the description box.
