- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the Coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. OK, today we are talking about
- 0:33the fact that many people ask the same question of me over and
- 0:39over and over again. And that funny question is,
- 0:41well, should I let it? Should I just let it go?
- 0:43Should I just let go of this? Should I not think about this?
- 0:47And it's such a common question, it really got me thinking about
- 0:52the origins of this. Like, what are we asking?
- 0:56Truly? What are we saying?
- 0:58And it really comes back to one piece of information that is
- 1:01very vital to us as human beings.
- 1:04Do I have the right jumping off point from my belief?
- 1:07So are we, am I, am I properly communicating with myself?
- 1:12Because if I'm properly communicating with myself, then
- 1:15I know if I want to die on this hill that I'm going after, or am
- 1:19I just in a position where I, I should just not even think about
- 1:23this any further. And it all comes back to our
- 1:27point of view. It always comes back to what do
- 1:30I believe? Am I believing the right things?
- 1:32Am I focused on the right things?
- 1:35And who knows if it's the quote UN quote right thing.
- 1:40But the measure of this really comes into how are you feeling
- 1:44about it? Are you distressed?
- 1:46Do you feel excited? Is it a moving towards feeling
- 1:50or is it a moving away from feeling?
- 1:52Now, improper communication with yourself can lead to extremely
- 1:57problematic situations because you just loop on things.
- 2:01So when I say improper communication, I mean when you
- 2:04keep doing the same things over and over and getting a result
- 2:07that you do not want, that is improper communication with
- 2:11yourself. Now, of course, you've heard me
- 2:12say a million times you're going to have negative feelings and
- 2:15they're going to show up. The question is what are they
- 2:19trying to tell you? And when you debrief them, you
- 2:21have new information and then you can decide, OK, do should I
- 2:25just let this thing go? Should I just set it off into
- 2:28the world and not worry about it anymore?
- 2:30Should I not argue with this person?
- 2:32Should I just not try to make a point?
- 2:36And it always puts us in a position of feeling like, well,
- 2:40do I have to compromise? That's another piece of this.
- 2:43Well, if I let it go, should I just let it go?
- 2:45And then I have to be the one that compromises.
- 2:48But it's not actually about compromising as much as it is
- 2:52what is the value of your happiness to you.
- 2:54In my world, I will put a lot of things aside and I'll say no,
- 2:59it's OK, because I'd rather be happy than be frustrated by
- 3:03thinking about this thing over and over and over again.
- 3:06Now let's use a simple example, and I'm purposely using a simple
- 3:11example, but this can go all the way up to more complicated
- 3:14examples. It's hard to change people's
- 3:17patterns and it's hard to change people's mind.
- 3:20So when they get into certain patterns and they get into
- 3:22certain mindset thinking, they have to decide to change it.
- 3:26We can't always change it. We can change ourselves, which
- 3:29changes the outcome ultimately of how the interaction takes
- 3:33place because one thing changes it changes other things.
- 3:36So I focus more on how I want to show up and then it when I do
- 3:43that, it shifts the equation. Now let me use this simple
- 3:46example of the dishwasher. So the dishwasher, I've joked
- 3:49about it many times, but it still is a point of contention.
- 3:52And it just happened last night. So I cleaned up the kitchen from
- 3:56dinner. I set the dishwasher to start in
- 4:00two hours so everyone had time for a shower and there was
- 4:03nothing happening. And I came out of my shower and
- 4:07I have like ears that hear all kinds of things.
- 4:11And I heard the drawer open in the kitchen and I heard the
- 4:14spoons or silverware clinking around.
- 4:17And then I heard the freezer open or refrigerator.
- 4:20I didn't know at that time. And then I it was silent and I
- 4:24was laughing, 'cause I was like, oh, I know what's going on.
- 4:27I bought ice cream. Someone's eating ice cream.
- 4:29So I heard the spoon, heard the the freezer shut, and then I
- 4:35heard the spoon clink in the sink and nothing, no dishwasher
- 4:40open. So I rather than getting annoyed
- 4:43at this because I know this happens Now if I come out in the
- 4:46morning and the dishwasher is done and there's a spoon, a
- 4:49singular spoon sitting in the sink, I would be like what the
- 4:53hell? How come it didn't get in the
- 4:54dishwasher? Rather than going down that
- 4:57road? I ran out.
- 4:58I opened the dishwasher. I put the spoon in it.
- 5:01I reset it and shut the door. And the response from my husband
- 5:05was classic funny. He's like, Oh my God, how did
- 5:09you even know? What do you have like some sick
- 5:12dish radar in your head? And I and I was, and I just
- 5:15laughed and I was like, no, I just, I heard it.
- 5:17I knew it. And it can be a, you know, it
- 5:20can be easily fixed. So I did it, and it was a joke,
- 5:23and we laughed about it. Now, there was a time when that
- 5:26would not have happened that way, and I would have had
- 5:28improper communication with myself and I would have blown
- 5:31that spoon up to be like a World War Three, because why can't you
- 5:36just put it in the dishwasher? But that's not the point of this
- 5:41conversation. The point is to know that's not
- 5:44how I want to be. I don't want to be that person
- 5:48and rather than have the problem, I want to be happy.
- 5:51So I properly communicated that to myself and I just go fix it
- 5:54and it's over. And it became a joke.
- 5:56And maybe he'll do it better next time, maybe he won't, I
- 5:59don't know. But the point is, find out for
- 6:02yourself where that communication is in your head
- 6:05and ask the question, do I just want to let this go so I can
- 6:09move on and be happy? That's the question of the day.
- 6:13All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:16will see you tomorrow. Bye.
