- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, I want about Dramaddie rodrig I'm very proud to
- 0:08Speaker 1: bring to you part two of our incredible conversation where
- 0:11Speaker 1: our brother Gabriel Luna here.
- 0:13Speaker 2: And must go on.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Part uh kicking things off with how did that process happen?
- 0:23Speaker 2: How did you even that was? You know what was
- 0:25Speaker 2: wild about that is around that time I had just
- 0:29Speaker 2: so happened to stumble upon a podcast of Robert Patrick
- 0:33Speaker 2: talking about the process of becoming the T one thousand,
- 0:40Speaker 2: and then shortly after I listened to this podcast, I say,
- 0:44Speaker 2: like a week later is when I got the call
- 0:47Speaker 2: that they wanted to bring me in for this and
- 0:49Speaker 2: I went in to see the Ray Mayfield was was
- 0:51Speaker 2: our casting director on that and and so began almost
- 0:58Speaker 2: the exact same mirror process that Jim put Robert through
- 1:04Speaker 2: when he was a T two one thousand. First thing
- 1:06Speaker 2: was the first casting thing, the callback was with Tim.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I remember seeing Mackenzie come out of the room. Kenzie
- 1:12Speaker 2: Davis said, just did her, who eventually was cast as
- 1:15Speaker 2: Grace in the film call back leave there. Next step
- 1:21Speaker 2: was to go meet with Tim at his office and
- 1:26Speaker 2: I and this all happened to Robert. This is exactly
- 1:28Speaker 2: as it happened because then Robert went to go see
- 1:31Speaker 2: Jim Cameron. They met together. Then they had a stunt
- 1:34Speaker 2: assessment with the stunt team, which is what he went
- 1:35Speaker 2: through and what I went through with the Phil Silvera
- 1:38Speaker 2: who was the stunt.
- 1:39Speaker 3: And this ten assessment is pretty much like can.
- 1:41Speaker 2: You yeah, what do you how do you feel? How
- 1:43Speaker 2: do you move? And everything else, you know. Then they
- 1:45Speaker 2: bring me in, they teach me some coreo of a
- 1:47Speaker 2: certain fight and I have to do the fight with
- 1:49Speaker 2: Freddie Boschiegas, who is our fight coordinator, who is now
- 1:52Speaker 2: the president of Stunts Unlimited, and I love him so much,
- 1:55Speaker 2: He's one of my favorite people. Yeah, and so Robert
- 1:59Speaker 2: of course went through the same thing I went. The
- 2:02Speaker 2: next step was I was waiting and then meet with
- 2:06Speaker 2: the sky DNSK, go meet with David Ellison, who was
- 2:08Speaker 2: the producing the film, and so once again parallel perfectly
- 2:14Speaker 2: with what Robert was experience experiencing at the time, he
- 2:18Speaker 2: went to meet paramount at the time. Yeah, so it's
- 2:20Speaker 2: just all kinds of crazy, kind of interwoven moments. But
- 2:23Speaker 2: then I remember after that being in a little bit
- 2:29Speaker 2: of a holding pattern. I was buying a house at
- 2:31Speaker 2: the time, so that kind of kept my house I'm
- 2:34Speaker 2: in now, kind of kept my mind off the process
- 2:36Speaker 2: because it was just a lot of waiting. But it
- 2:40Speaker 2: felt like it was all going along the framework that
- 2:44Speaker 2: I had heard Robert talk about in this podcast.
- 2:46Speaker 3: So I was like, okay, We're like okay, so where
- 2:48Speaker 3: am I in the progress?
- 2:49Speaker 2: It feels like I'm at the end of it now.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And then they were like, well, Tim calls me and
- 2:55Speaker 2: or the team calls in. They're like, they want to
- 2:56Speaker 2: screen test you. And I was like, okay, man, whatever
- 2:58Speaker 2: they want. Went to Blur Studios. I met with Tim
- 3:01Speaker 2: Miller and he brings me aside and he's like, Gabe,
- 3:04Speaker 2: he'll hold me by the shoulders, like you are my guy.
- 3:08Speaker 2: But Jim wants to meet his screen test chief. And
- 3:11Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, man, whatever Jim wants. And he's like,
- 3:14Speaker 2: because I'm telling you, I told him, you know, he's
- 3:17Speaker 2: the guy. I don't need to do this. But he
- 3:19Speaker 2: told me that he once built a whole This is
- 3:22Speaker 2: Tim talking about Jim Cameron. He said the Jim once
- 3:24Speaker 2: built a whole forest rainforest for a screen test, which
- 3:28Speaker 2: is apparently what he did for Sam Worthington when he
- 3:30Speaker 2: was testing for Avatar just built a whole like, yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 2: full on set of Pandora for him to do his
- 3:38Speaker 2: screen test. So he's like, so Tim, just test the kid,
- 3:42Speaker 2: and so we go in there. There's a one scene
- 3:45Speaker 2: where I'm talking to these two border guards after I
- 3:47Speaker 2: just ripped through you know, twenty thirty border guards, like
- 3:52Speaker 2: basically like border patrol guys. I infiltrate as a border
- 3:55Speaker 2: patrol looking for the target and then just like ripped
- 3:58Speaker 2: through this entire detention facility, which at the time was
- 4:04Speaker 2: was really really timely, you know, considering how people were
- 4:07Speaker 2: being treated and people being detained and held for you know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: interminable amounts of time. And uh So I did that
- 4:16Speaker 2: scene for the screen test, and then I was done,
- 4:22Speaker 2: I'd say about a week later. Once again, about to go,
- 4:27Speaker 2: I get the text from my wife, which is the
- 4:30Speaker 2: grocery list. Once again about to go to Trader Jokes,
- 4:34Speaker 2: but I'm like, well Trade Jo is getting a lot.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Yeah, this episode has been brought to you, and so
- 4:41Speaker 4: uh and so once again no one around just get
- 4:45Speaker 4: the call that you know.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Tim called me. The opportunity was was incredible.
- 4:50Speaker 5: And was the was the role written Latino or were
- 4:54Speaker 5: you just like the best dude.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Well, I think, uh, I think the idea was. I
- 4:59Speaker 2: don't know where the you know what the I I think,
- 5:02Speaker 2: I think yes, I think. Well, first of all, the
- 5:05Speaker 2: machine is a kind of a has a kind of
- 5:10Speaker 2: like this polyalloy basically a kind of a T one
- 5:15Speaker 2: thousand exoskeleton liquid skin, and then a ENDO skeleton which
- 5:21Speaker 2: makes it more durable, much like the T eight hundred.
- 5:23Speaker 2: So it it's both and it can split and become
- 5:26Speaker 2: essentially the shell which is the T one thousand and
- 5:28Speaker 2: an endo and kind of coordinate and triangulate on the target.
- 5:31Speaker 2: So there was that aspect, so it could be anything.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It could obviously transform into anything. Yeah, but the target
- 5:41Speaker 2: played by Natalia Reyes was from Mexico City, So if
- 5:44Speaker 2: you're going to send a terminator to Mexico City, you
- 5:46Speaker 2: make them look like the local populace. And and so
- 5:51Speaker 2: that was part of it, and just kept that general
- 5:54Speaker 2: look throughout the thing and transformed into a couple of
- 5:56Speaker 2: different people while I was along the way hunting them.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Another instance where everyone was, you know, making their jokes
- 6:05Speaker 2: and oh, it's the tea, and then I was.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Waiting when that was gonna happen.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, and it did without fail. But once again
- 6:15Speaker 2: when it come out, when it comes out, people forget
- 6:18Speaker 2: that aspect of it. Yeah, because if it's performed, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 2: with diligence and care and focus. And you know, because
- 6:27Speaker 2: I trained so hard for that, and I gained twenty
- 6:31Speaker 2: two pounds of muscle. I read the dow JIQUNDO over
- 6:36Speaker 2: and over again, back to back, because my whole thing
- 6:38Speaker 2: was which is of course Bruce Lee's book about efficiency
- 6:43Speaker 2: of movement, no wasted movement and how anything that isn't
- 6:48Speaker 2: fighting should be shed because anything beyond what is fighting
- 6:52Speaker 2: is what he calls organized despair. You know, any kind
- 6:56Speaker 2: of like flourishes or wushu or anything like that. It's like, no,
- 6:58Speaker 2: if it doesn't get the job done towards the end
- 7:03Speaker 2: of neutralizing or eliminating your opponent, then doesn't factor. Right,
- 7:07Speaker 2: if it's not fighting, it isn't fighting.
- 7:08Speaker 5: And did you read that and subscribe to that, Like,
- 7:12Speaker 5: did you feel that the character embodied that philosophy.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Or well, the character as a machine would would be
- 7:19Speaker 2: the most efficient. Yeah, and would take the shortest line
- 7:23Speaker 2: from ad B towards the target. Every movement, every step,
- 7:28Speaker 2: every strike would be towards the target, even if he
- 7:31Speaker 2: was engaged with another target. So that was kind of
- 7:35Speaker 2: my philosophy there. And then of course I put on
- 7:37Speaker 2: twenty two pounds of muscle training my butt off, knowing
- 7:41Speaker 2: that at one point I was going to be sitting
- 7:43Speaker 2: in front of Arnold Schwarzenegger, of course, and I didn't
- 7:46Speaker 2: want him to look at me and think that he
- 7:47Speaker 2: could squish me like a bug and beny your beauty.
- 7:52Speaker 2: And so I remember the first time I met him.
- 7:53Speaker 2: He came in for hair and make up test. Bill
- 7:55Speaker 2: Corso or makeup artist, the legendary Academy Award winning special
- 7:58Speaker 2: effects makeup artists, Bill corp Show was painting his like
- 8:02Speaker 2: battle damage onto Arnold, doing like a test. And while
- 8:07Speaker 2: he was doing that, Arnold was meeting with Susannah, one
- 8:09Speaker 2: of our makeup artists from Spain, because we shot the
- 8:11Speaker 2: first I think two months in Madrid. Susanna was there
- 8:16Speaker 2: just gushing over the fact that her father was Arnold's
- 8:20Speaker 2: makeup artist on Conan. Oh, and so Arnold had been
- 8:25Speaker 2: there in al Marilla decades ago making Conan, and here
- 8:32Speaker 2: he was now working with the daughter of his makeup
- 8:34Speaker 2: artists in that film. So he's been just employing generations
- 8:38Speaker 2: and Spanish makeup artists and uh and she and I
- 8:42Speaker 2: was just it was such a beautiful story and I
- 8:43Speaker 2: didn't want to, but they brought me in to meet him.
- 8:45Speaker 2: But I was like, no, no, there's there's a there's
- 8:46Speaker 2: a beautiful thing happening there. Just let them. So I
- 8:48Speaker 2: just sat on the other end of the hair makeup trailer.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And finally they had finished their conversation with Susannah Labb
- 8:54Speaker 2: and Bill's like, Arnold, this is here's Gabriel. And he
- 8:58Speaker 2: turns to me and I see like half his face
- 9:00Speaker 2: all ripped up, and I shoul probably turned a camera this
- 9:03Speaker 2: way half his face all ripped and and he goes
- 9:07Speaker 2: and I stood up. He's like, wow, look at you.
- 9:11Speaker 2: You're ripped. Look at this guy. And I just that's it.
- 9:18Speaker 2: That's That's all the encouragement I needed. And then we
- 9:22Speaker 2: went on to become very close. We would train, you know,
- 9:26Speaker 2: three four times a week together at flex gym and
- 9:28Speaker 2: Budapest shout out to Adam Cislasco, who owns the gym,
- 9:32Speaker 2: and it was so cool, man, it's a that that
- 9:37Speaker 2: gym in Budapest is legendary. I mean, everybody's been there
- 9:39Speaker 2: at the Rock. Henry cow Henry was there, he was
- 9:41Speaker 2: shooting the Witcher. He was actually there where we were there,
- 9:45Speaker 2: Will Smith and Jamie Fox and they're all on the
- 9:48Speaker 2: walls there. And of course Arnold now prominently placed. There's
- 9:53Speaker 2: like a T eight hundred statue of him and the thing. Albert,
- 9:58Speaker 2: who was Arnold's kind of who's kind of a patron
- 10:02Speaker 2: of Arnold when he first moved to the States. Albert
- 10:04Speaker 2: used to run bodybuilding competitions in Europe. He's based out
- 10:07Speaker 2: of Germany. And Albert actually donated these old machines, these
- 10:13Speaker 2: old weight machines that are from the sixties. They're all chrome.
- 10:17Speaker 2: They polish them up and now it's basically like a
- 10:20Speaker 2: living museum at Flex Gym and Budapest where you can
- 10:23Speaker 2: train on these machines that Arnold was training on in
- 10:25Speaker 2: the sixties. So you can you can you can use that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: There's pictures of Arnold on the machines from that era.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Albert donated this.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I didn't think that that would be an actual exhibition
- 10:36Speaker 1: for anyone who's like a fit, you know what I mean. Oh,
- 10:39Speaker 1: this is an exhibition that you can also interact with
- 10:42Speaker 1: that iconically was established by someone that iconic was a physique.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I got, like a pilgrimage.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Isn't that cool? It's just a whole idea that they
- 10:52Speaker 2: did that. But now there's on that wall there's a
- 10:57Speaker 2: huge picture of myself and then be huge picture of
- 10:59Speaker 2: me and Arnold together next fifteen eight hundred statueses. And
- 11:05Speaker 2: so he and I just became you know, we're part
- 11:08Speaker 2: of this very small fraternity of people who were determinators.
- 11:10Speaker 2: But beyond that, he's become this father figure to me
- 11:16Speaker 2: and somebody who I, uh, if some cool stuff is
- 11:19Speaker 2: happening in my life where you're kind of an older brother,
- 11:22Speaker 2: and I'd say that he's kind of the father figure.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And like I was at WrestleMania a couple of months ago,
- 11:28Speaker 2: and I was just like, Arnold loves he speak really
- 11:31Speaker 2: good friends with superstar Billy Graham, So Arnold loves wrestling.
- 11:34Speaker 2: So yeah, you know, he only FaceTime my FaceTime. I
- 11:37Speaker 2: was like, check this out. He's like, wow, how many
- 11:40Speaker 2: people are there? Sixty three thousand. He's like, whoa, it's
- 11:44Speaker 2: a lot of people. All right, I love you have fun,
- 11:46Speaker 2: but you know, just whatever, if there's some cool stuff
- 11:49Speaker 2: going on. I just call him and just to hear
- 11:51Speaker 2: him in his excitement.
- 11:52Speaker 3: And that's a genuine man too.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:55Speaker 1: It's just so I still ever wonders about this whole
- 11:58Speaker 1: process about making movies. Others like, yeah, seems like he's
- 12:01Speaker 1: such bad still passionate about that. And I've seen your
- 12:05Speaker 1: friendship with him kind of played out, and uh, and.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I've always been like, man like, I don't know what
- 12:12Speaker 3: it'd be.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Like to be like Arnold, Like I'm doing biceps now,
- 12:15Speaker 1: like you know, like like I'm a trying to do
- 12:18Speaker 1: with squad, what would be the most effective school.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I'll tell you. I'll tell you how he does how
- 12:21Speaker 2: he does biceps. He likes the preacher curl. Uh. He
- 12:25Speaker 2: likes curls of all sorts, curls for the girls.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Girls.
- 12:29Speaker 2: But Arnold's thing is slow, slow on the negative, that's right. Bang,
- 12:34Speaker 2: explosive on the on the rep and it's slow on
- 12:37Speaker 2: the negative. Bang, that's how it is. And the way
- 12:39Speaker 2: he just trains dude, it's like a machine. I mean,
- 12:41Speaker 2: everything is form is perfect, everything is perfect. The timing
- 12:45Speaker 2: of it is almost like a metronome, and it's just
- 12:48Speaker 2: it's amazing. Enjoy every rep. Absolutely, he feels it. He
- 12:52Speaker 2: feels every single every single rep. And I remember training
- 12:55Speaker 2: with him in flex and just being kind of in
- 12:58Speaker 2: all of it. There's just four of us and one
- 13:00Speaker 2: of our first training sessions together and I'm doing triceps
- 13:05Speaker 2: on the on the cables and he's there with his
- 13:08Speaker 2: counting off the reps and he's got you know the
- 13:09Speaker 2: German three that we all learned in The Glorious Bastards
- 13:12Speaker 2: that this is the German three. If you do this,
- 13:14Speaker 2: you get killed if you and and it's it's still
- 13:19Speaker 2: to this day as I'm speaking about it just seems
- 13:22Speaker 2: like someone else's life.
- 13:23Speaker 1: But right, but you you have what I lead h
- 13:36Speaker 1: I will say, Man, you've been able to not just
- 13:41Speaker 1: live up to your dream, but now you're in a
- 13:44Speaker 1: position to, you know, continue to tell stories and a
- 13:48Speaker 1: level that you know it's it's again becomes the dream
- 13:51Speaker 1: of the next Caralina. You know who's going to be
- 13:53Speaker 1: the next Girlina is looking at you and be like, ah,
- 13:56Speaker 1: the last of us, right, like that character. And by
- 13:59Speaker 1: the way, you're like so to seem stealer, bro, like
- 14:02Speaker 1: you know what I'm doing? See with him and the
- 14:03Speaker 1: last of us, they were just like he's so interesting.
- 14:06Speaker 2: What do we do more of this guy?
- 14:07Speaker 5: And you and Page are so believable. Yeah, the brother
- 14:09Speaker 5: guys are perfect together.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we survive your chemistry the way you know,
- 14:14Speaker 1: how what is that? What was that experience? Like, you know,
- 14:17Speaker 1: the Last of Us was such a you know, people
- 14:19Speaker 1: always and before teen years ago, people were really cynical
- 14:23Speaker 1: about like, oh, a video game, a comic book. Yeah,
- 14:25Speaker 1: you know, but it really is like, if you have
- 14:27Speaker 1: the right tools to tell the story from the character perspective, first,
- 14:32Speaker 1: it doesn't matter how extraordinary or how big the world
- 14:35Speaker 1: is around you, because the story it really is about
- 14:38Speaker 1: the individuals living it, not like look at how big
- 14:41Speaker 1: this is, look at the stunt, at the monsters.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:44Speaker 3: So they really got that one masterfully.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Did the Carolyn Stras produce that one? She did? She
- 14:49Speaker 2: did you work to Carolyn? Well, that's just I mean,
- 14:52Speaker 2: that's HBO. Yeah, the lineage of that Sopranos, Game of Thrones,
- 14:58Speaker 2: all the things that she's worked on. Yeah. Mark my
- 15:01Speaker 2: lad who Cartage, who became was a director, became an
- 15:05Speaker 2: ep of Entourage, was won an Emmy for Succession all
- 15:10Speaker 2: the episodes he did there.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Of course, by the way, little connection there too. He
- 15:15Speaker 1: directed the pilot to Minority Report, which was we did
- 15:19Speaker 1: this one season on that show on Fox, and he
- 15:23Speaker 1: came and directed the pilot and he had just been
- 15:25Speaker 1: back from Game of Thrones, Yeah, because he needed directing
- 15:28Speaker 1: some of the biggest episodes.
- 15:29Speaker 2: What a beautiful person. Beautiful person, beautiful, incredibly talented guy.
- 15:33Speaker 2: One favorite directors I've ever worked, very kind, can do scale,
- 15:38Speaker 2: can do sci if I could do action, can do this.
- 15:40Speaker 2: But but once again knows that you know, it's really
- 15:42Speaker 2: about that person, that person and them standing in front
- 15:46Speaker 2: of each other and expressing themselves and that that is
- 15:49Speaker 2: so Yeah. So that's another kind of That's the thing
- 15:53Speaker 2: with HBO. You know, this is the this would have been.
- 15:55Speaker 2: This is the third time I've worked. I did the
- 15:58Speaker 2: day player role that I did HBO when I was
- 16:00Speaker 2: in Austin Brandon, I did True Detective and then The
- 16:06Speaker 2: Last of Us. And they always keep it in the family.
- 16:07Speaker 2: You know, I'm sitting there with Jeffrey Wright who was
- 16:11Speaker 2: in Westworld, and Routina who was in True Blood, and
- 16:13Speaker 2: Pedro who's in Game of Thrones, in Bella, Game of
- 16:15Speaker 2: you know, it's just like family, and that's why I
- 16:17Speaker 2: love working with HBO. Yeah the uh Carolyn is Yeah,
- 16:21Speaker 2: it's amazing. So when all that came together, it was
- 16:27Speaker 2: it was a really hot kind of property. That was
- 16:31Speaker 2: that everyone knew of it and was coming up and
- 16:33Speaker 2: everybody speculating who's going to get cast, and and then
- 16:36Speaker 2: when Pedro was cast as Joel, it did kind of
- 16:42Speaker 2: flash in my mind. I was like, I think I
- 16:43Speaker 2: could play that guy's brother. I knew that they're brother character.
- 16:47Speaker 2: And then I didn't think about it again. And then
- 16:49Speaker 2: when I was still on Twitter, I remember seeing, uh,
- 16:53Speaker 2: I mentioned this this kid a lot. I actually met
- 16:55Speaker 2: them at a London comic con one time. There was
- 16:57Speaker 2: a young young girl who just threw the idea out
- 17:01Speaker 2: there and it got a lot of attention on the internet.
- 17:05Speaker 2: They the possibility that I could play it. I was like, oh,
- 17:08Speaker 2: that's kind of cool just seeing somebody in the out
- 17:11Speaker 2: in the yeah, just say it. And then I was
- 17:15Speaker 2: like okay, yeah. Once again, didn't didn't really register beyond that,
- 17:20Speaker 2: and then month and a half, almost two months later,
- 17:22Speaker 2: my team calls says, Craig Mason and Carolyn Strauss want
- 17:25Speaker 2: to meet with you about playing Tommy Miller and the
- 17:28Speaker 2: last of us, and I was like, They were like,
- 17:30Speaker 2: are you familiar with the game? I was like, no,
- 17:31Speaker 2: but I can get familiar. And so I went on
- 17:33Speaker 2: my PlayStation. I got the game and I started playing it,
- 17:35Speaker 2: and I realized that they were from Austin, Texas. Oh,
- 17:40Speaker 2: like the characters themselves are from Austin texts. Yeah yeah,
- 17:43Speaker 2: And I was like, I can do that. I know
- 17:46Speaker 2: what that is, and and sure enough it all worked out.
- 17:52Speaker 2: They wanted me to play Pegris's brother for that. Did
- 17:55Speaker 2: you have to test for that or like? Well, yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 2: So what they did was they called me. Craig and
- 18:01Speaker 2: Carolyn wanted to meet me, even me, and we met
- 18:03Speaker 2: me Carolyn and Neil Druckman, the creator of the game
- 18:06Speaker 2: and one of the directors. I'd say Craig is our
- 18:09Speaker 2: Shue runner, and we just met. We talked for about
- 18:14Speaker 2: I think forty five minutes. Found out that Neil and
- 18:16Speaker 2: I have the same birthday. We're both born on December fifth.
- 18:19Speaker 2: We share a birthday with Little Richard and Walt Disney's
- 18:23Speaker 2: griffritz Lange. That's great. I go to Disneyland quite often
- 18:27Speaker 2: for my birthday because they'll always give me two buttons,
- 18:30Speaker 2: one for Walt and whatever one hundredth and seventy to
- 18:32Speaker 2: whatever birthday it is online, as I get closer and
- 18:35Speaker 2: closer one hundred and seventeen, and and then they said,
- 18:40Speaker 2: you know, we love you. We think it'd be great
- 18:41Speaker 2: for this if you wouldn't mine, maybe put down a
- 18:44Speaker 2: scene for us, And they sent me a scene from
- 18:46Speaker 2: the second game where Tommy is talking to Ellie about
- 18:50Speaker 2: going to Seattle. And I didn't know what that was
- 18:55Speaker 2: about yet because I hadn't played that part of the
- 18:57Speaker 2: game yet. But in between my meeting, or in between
- 19:02Speaker 2: them calling saying I had the meeting, to the time
- 19:05Speaker 2: I took the meeting, I had about three days. So
- 19:08Speaker 2: I played some of the game and realized all these
- 19:10Speaker 2: aspects of it that I had mentioned before from Austin,
- 19:12Speaker 2: that the dynamic between the brothers, everything seemed very kind
- 19:16Speaker 2: of in my wheelhouse. The fact that the character was
- 19:21Speaker 2: was a veteran, and you know, I've played a lot
- 19:23Speaker 2: of characters that have this kind of history and this,
- 19:28Speaker 2: you know, just experience on the gun. So he's a sniper,
- 19:33Speaker 2: which is I did. I had worked with Jack Neviles,
- 19:38Speaker 2: who trains army snipers. He was our military advisor for
- 19:41Speaker 2: Terminator and so already had a lot of this kind
- 19:45Speaker 2: of knowledge and experience, and so I told them all
- 19:49Speaker 2: this in the meeting. They all they were there eating up.
- 19:51Speaker 2: They loved it, and they was like, you know what,
- 19:52Speaker 2: you're kind of perfect. We just wanted you to kind
- 19:54Speaker 2: of throw this scene together. And I'm like sure. So
- 19:56Speaker 2: the next day I sent this scene. My wife was
- 19:58Speaker 2: my reader who is She's she's really funny. She's like,
- 20:01Speaker 2: you know what, I should do a sketch about how
- 20:03Speaker 2: I'm the reader to the stars and how my tapes
- 20:06Speaker 2: book reader to the Stars, so skin about how this
- 20:11Speaker 2: person is the go to reader in the town and uh.
- 20:14Speaker 2: And so we did the scene and sent it in
- 20:17Speaker 2: and they called me. I think within like three or
- 20:19Speaker 2: four hours. Isn't funny?
- 20:20Speaker 1: How I really think they they know they're going to
- 20:23Speaker 1: give you the part. And it's like this song and
- 20:25Speaker 1: danstud just traditionally they gotta do.
- 20:27Speaker 2: I just it's just it's just, you know, everybody in
- 20:29Speaker 2: the meeting, everybody in the meeting knows. And then I
- 20:32Speaker 2: think it's you know, they just kind of shoot it
- 20:35Speaker 2: up the ladder or wherever.
- 20:37Speaker 3: It's almost like they said that they did it. We
- 20:39Speaker 3: got to tell you, like, you know, you wonder your
- 20:40Speaker 3: favorite they even watch it.
- 20:41Speaker 2: They're like, I mean the fact that it came in
- 20:44Speaker 2: hours later. I was like, okay, yeah, that's what I've seen.
- 20:46Speaker 2: It saw.
- 20:47Speaker 3: It's like you were obviously the person who the whole time.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And so that was that was that, and I was
- 20:55Speaker 2: I was given all the scripts I think just shortly
- 20:59Speaker 2: before I should doubt and I and I played the
- 21:01Speaker 2: game for the next two months in prep. I just
- 21:03Speaker 2: kind of played the game, started seeing the casting announcements
- 21:05Speaker 2: come through, and everybody was of course got cast, and
- 21:12Speaker 2: everybody was questioning why and then we do the show.
- 21:15Speaker 2: We go out, this is post pandemic, so it was
- 21:17Speaker 2: still this was still it was a kind of a
- 21:23Speaker 2: masked situation. We were coming out of the pandemic doing
- 21:27Speaker 2: a show about a pandemic, wondering if people were going
- 21:29Speaker 2: to be fatigued about this subject matter. Not only was
- 21:32Speaker 2: it not only was it that not that it actually
- 21:36Speaker 2: was more so kind of this entry point for people.
- 21:38Speaker 2: They knew, they had the experience, They had this collective
- 21:41Speaker 2: knowledge of what that living through that is like, and
- 21:44Speaker 2: the fear that anyone around you could be can affect
- 21:47Speaker 2: you you know, and I remember going to Alberta crogery.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Alberta was in quarantine for two weeks FaceTime with Beether,
- 21:55Speaker 2: trying to get our relationship you know, built, and it
- 21:59Speaker 2: was really beautiful, just really easy man. He he. He
- 22:04Speaker 2: grew up in San Antonio for the first like five
- 22:06Speaker 2: years of his life. San Antonio is eighty six miles
- 22:09Speaker 2: down the road from Austin, and so we kind of
- 22:12Speaker 2: worked out some dialect stuff. He heard kind of my
- 22:14Speaker 2: voice and what I was going to do with the
- 22:16Speaker 2: the thing and tried to match some of that, and
- 22:18Speaker 2: we match some physicality and just have these discussions over
- 22:22Speaker 2: over FaceTime. And then the day I got out of quarantine,
- 22:30Speaker 2: I went to get to do my hair makeup test
- 22:32Speaker 2: and my costume fitting, and then my driver she asked me, so,
- 22:37Speaker 2: what do you want to do with your first you know,
- 22:38Speaker 2: what do you want to do? You're you're you're you're
- 22:40Speaker 2: out of quarantine. I was like, take me to the Hearthouse.
- 22:43Speaker 2: And the Hearththouse is the ancestral home of Brett Hart
- 22:46Speaker 2: and his family, his father's Stu heart Restler. Yeah. I
- 22:51Speaker 2: was a huge you know, growing up, I was a
- 22:53Speaker 2: huge and I am still now as I meant Heart Foundation,
- 23:00Speaker 2: so Brett Hart is I. So I went and did
- 23:04Speaker 2: my pilgrimage to the Hearthouse, and I lurked around the
- 23:07Speaker 2: gates and took photos outside, and there's this beautiful plaque
- 23:10Speaker 2: that says Hearthouse and with two Greco Roman wrestlers wrestling.
- 23:15Speaker 2: And then there I could see the basement from the street,
- 23:17Speaker 2: the world famous dungeon where Stu Hart, his father trained
- 23:21Speaker 2: generations of wrestlers, including his entire family, Brett, his brother Owen,
- 23:26Speaker 2: and his brother in law's Davy Boy, and Jim Knightheart,
- 23:29Speaker 2: who his tag team partner. And so I go home.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I come back the next day. Our COVID doctor fella
- 23:37Speaker 2: named Mike was like, what'd you do with your first
- 23:39Speaker 2: day of freedom? And I said, I went to the Hearththouse.
- 23:44Speaker 2: He's like, oh, you're a wrestling fan. I was. I
- 23:46Speaker 2: was like, yeah, I like wrestling. I mean, I love
- 23:47Speaker 2: Brett Hart. I mean I told him the story that
- 23:49Speaker 2: when I was a kid, after my mom got divorced
- 23:52Speaker 2: with my brothers, my brother Timothy's dad, our first outing
- 23:55Speaker 2: together as our new family unit, my mom, myself and
- 23:59Speaker 2: my little brother was to go see WWE at the
- 24:03Speaker 2: Frank Irwin Center in Austin, Texas in nineteen eighty nine
- 24:05Speaker 2: at Saturday Night's main event. We were going there to
- 24:09Speaker 2: see The Ultimate Warrior, and we left eternal Brett Hart
- 24:13Speaker 2: fans because my brother was. He bestowed the pink visor
- 24:18Speaker 2: shades onto my brother, which is his. It was his claim.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Two fames. Yeah, the first.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Please tell me he still has Yeah, he still has them.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Someone and he's like, he's he just held that over
- 24:35Speaker 2: my head for so long as I got. Look at
- 24:38Speaker 2: I got. Every time I tried to hold him, He's like,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you get Hell, those are mine. You can't touch it. Yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 2: And so flash forward to Calgary, Alberta. I'm shooting the
- 24:46Speaker 2: last of us. We're ending the first We're like round
- 24:49Speaker 2: the end of the first episode or something, and then, uh,
- 24:52Speaker 2: the same COVID doctor. Well he had told me earlier.
- 24:55Speaker 2: He's like, you know what, I know Brett Hart's appearance agent.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Maybe you can link you guys up. I was like,
- 24:59Speaker 2: that'd be amazing. Didn't think about it, just go to work.
- 25:03Speaker 2: One of the last days of the first episode. My
- 25:05Speaker 2: assistant comes up. She's like, I got my COVID on
- 25:08Speaker 2: the line. I was like, oh no, I thought I
- 25:10Speaker 2: popped dirty on one of the COVID tests. I was like, oh, shoot,
- 25:13Speaker 2: what's going on? Man, we're ready to hear him tell
- 25:15Speaker 2: me you need to walk off the set and you
- 25:17Speaker 2: needed whatever quarantine you again for two weeks. But it
- 25:21Speaker 2: wasn't that. It was hey, man, how would you like
- 25:23Speaker 2: to meet Brett Hart? And I was like, I would
- 25:26Speaker 2: love to go on. He's like, well, I gave him
- 25:29Speaker 2: your phone number. He's going to call you tomorrow. I
- 25:31Speaker 2: was like, well, wait, wait, hold on, he's going to Yeah.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I was like, wait, wait, I'm working. We're all nights tonight.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I'm not getting off until six am. When is he
- 25:38Speaker 2: in a call? He's like, I don't know, man, He's
- 25:40Speaker 2: just going to call you. And I was like okay.
- 25:42Speaker 2: So I worked all night, wrapped at six, drove the
- 25:45Speaker 2: hour from High River back to Calgary, went to bed,
- 25:47Speaker 2: woke up at like nine one another like situation with
- 25:51Speaker 2: Robert where I was just I didn't sleep very much,
- 25:54Speaker 2: but I knew something. I had to answer the phone,
- 25:57Speaker 2: and I I answer it or he calls me like
- 26:00Speaker 2: nine to twelve, so I'm glad I'm up. He's like
- 26:02Speaker 2: he gave this his Brett here you're a big fan
- 26:07Speaker 2: and my my son Blades a fan of Oars and
- 26:09Speaker 2: like we can meet up and you know, go have
- 26:11Speaker 2: a bite to eat. And I was like, yeah, that'd
- 26:13Speaker 2: be wonderful. I said, what do you want to do.
- 26:15Speaker 2: He's like, well, tomorrow we can go to Red's Diner.
- 26:17Speaker 2: It's kind of close to your house, and and I
- 26:19Speaker 2: was like, sounds good. And then I get off the
- 26:23Speaker 2: phone and my wife's laughing. You're like, you look like
- 26:24Speaker 2: a little kid.
- 26:28Speaker 1: And then the whole thing by the universe right like that,
- 26:31Speaker 1: You're like nine in the morning, you're talking to like
- 26:35Speaker 1: your childhood hero, and then you're making.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Just go get a bite. You're like, what, what's my crazy? Crazy?
- 26:41Speaker 2: Because then the next day I drive over that Red's Diner.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I get us a corner booth and I'm waiting for
- 26:46Speaker 2: him thirty minutes early because he's not gonna wait for me.
- 26:49Speaker 2: But then nine twelve o'clock comes around he's not there.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Well okay, so I go outside and look outside on
- 26:54Speaker 2: the patio. He's not there. He's like, oh shoot, and
- 26:57Speaker 2: then he texts me and he says I'm here. It's like,
- 27:00Speaker 2: where are you? I call him up? Sorry? Where are
- 27:02Speaker 2: you He's home in the patio. I'm looking at the patio
- 27:04Speaker 2: and there's no one there. I was like, okay, one second.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I go up to the hostess. So it's like, is
- 27:08Speaker 2: there another Reds diner? Like, oh yeah, there's one in Kensington. Oh.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I was like, oh God. So I get in the car.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I drive over to Kensington. It's kind of a kind
- 27:16Speaker 2: of a more kind of fancier. I mean, it's fancy
- 27:19Speaker 2: as kind of Calgary gets. And then I'm looking at everything.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Calgary is only fifteen minutes. Okay, So I go over there,
- 27:28Speaker 2: and but I'm looking at I'm just looking at the
- 27:29Speaker 2: patio from outside. I don't see brett Heart there. And
- 27:32Speaker 2: also this kind of part of town doesn't strike me
- 27:34Speaker 2: as the other place I just left felt very much
- 27:37Speaker 2: like a Bredheart spot. It's like old diner, brick, red
- 27:41Speaker 2: brick building, you know. And then I get to this
- 27:43Speaker 2: place and it's kind of new and fancy. I was like,
- 27:45Speaker 2: this doesn't feel right. So I started driving back to
- 27:47Speaker 2: the other place. Maybe I just missed him. But then
- 27:49Speaker 2: I look at my phone. He texts me and I
- 27:51Speaker 2: call him furiously. I'm sure, I'm so sorry. I'm all
- 27:53Speaker 2: my way, I'm I would never keep you waiting. He's like, oh,
- 27:56Speaker 2: it's all right, just take your time. And then I
- 28:00Speaker 2: look on the text thread and he had sent me
- 28:02Speaker 2: the physical address where I needed to go, and I
- 28:03Speaker 2: just had overlooked it. It was another Reds diner in
- 28:07Speaker 2: East Kenol, where he lives. But luck, once again, everything's
- 28:11Speaker 2: twelve to fifteen minutes away. So I drived to East
- 28:14Speaker 2: Calgary and there he is sitting outside, and we'd appreciate this.
- 28:18Speaker 2: As Latinos and people who love wrestling, we will probably
- 28:21Speaker 2: all love Ray Mysterio, and apparently so does Brett Hart.
- 28:25Speaker 2: In fact, Ray is probably his favorite wrestler, I think,
- 28:27Speaker 2: he says. And he's wearing a Ray Mysterio shirt from
- 28:30Speaker 2: a company called Roots of Fight that my buddy Jesse
- 28:33Speaker 2: Katz owns, And I'm looking at Brett Heart there in
- 28:39Speaker 2: his silver shock of hair, sitting right in front of me,
- 28:43Speaker 2: and we proceed to have a five hour conversation. He
- 28:46Speaker 2: tells me every single story straight from the horse's mouth.
- 28:49Speaker 2: He tells me about the Montreal screwdob against Seawan Michaels,
- 28:51Speaker 2: where Vince screwed him out of the belt. He tells
- 28:55Speaker 2: me Wrestmania thirteen with Stonecoat Steve Austin, and he's using
- 29:00Speaker 2: when he described the Montreal screwjob, he's using salt shakers,
- 29:04Speaker 2: sugar packets, pepper thing to show me where everybody was. Like,
- 29:08Speaker 2: so I'm sitting here, Sean's in the corner crime, my
- 29:11Speaker 2: brother and Davy and Jim are sitting here this salt shaker.
- 29:15Speaker 2: This is Vince coming in with Sergeant Slaughter and he's
- 29:17Speaker 2: just like doing the whole basically the floor map of
- 29:20Speaker 2: what happened when he punched this McMahon out, knock him
- 29:22Speaker 2: out with a nupper cut and laid him out on
- 29:24Speaker 2: the floor. So he tells me this whole story. He's like,
- 29:27Speaker 2: Davy boy always stole my towel, so I didn't have
- 29:29Speaker 2: a towel. So I'm naked as a jaybird as I
- 29:32Speaker 2: walk out, and I tell Vince, you better be out
- 29:33Speaker 2: of here by the time I get my clothes on,
- 29:35Speaker 2: and he's like, I only got my pants and one
- 29:37Speaker 2: shoe on. And I got up and I uppercutted him
- 29:39Speaker 2: and I knocked him out. I told me a little story.
- 29:41Speaker 2: And then he tells me the story about Stone goes.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Steve Austin wrestling at thirteen where Stone Colts is bleeding.
- 29:46Speaker 2: It's a very famous, probably the most famous WrestleMania match.
- 29:52Speaker 2: In fact, it's the first match to ever be inducted
- 29:54Speaker 2: into the Wrestlal, the ww Hall of Fame. And this
- 29:58Speaker 2: year's WrestleMania where I was in attendance, and I went
- 30:02Speaker 2: to have dinner with Brett and his wife Stephanie with
- 30:05Speaker 2: my friend Michael, who blew my buddy Michael's mind. So
- 30:08Speaker 2: we're sitting there Cosmopolitan having dinner and he was just
- 30:12Speaker 2: telling me the whole thing about the induction of the
- 30:14Speaker 2: match and everything else. I was telling Michael about how
- 30:16Speaker 2: Brett had told me about that match, and he used
- 30:19Speaker 2: a Sweet and Low that he folds into fourths to
- 30:24Speaker 2: show me the size of the blade, and then how
- 30:26Speaker 2: he taped it with his wrist tape and he left
- 30:28Speaker 2: a tiny little corner of the blade exposed, because traditionally
- 30:33Speaker 2: that's how they would you would get color and cut
- 30:34Speaker 2: yourself and gig, you know, and you usually do it
- 30:37Speaker 2: to yourself, but Stone Cold had never done it before,
- 30:40Speaker 2: so Brett volunteered to do it for him, but with
- 30:42Speaker 2: the stipulation that if the blade comes out, it has
- 30:45Speaker 2: to happen. You can't go back from that point, even
- 30:48Speaker 2: though at the time there was a strict no blood
- 30:50Speaker 2: rule that vincement Man had put in place, and not
- 30:53Speaker 2: only did they do it, they did it right in
- 30:55Speaker 2: front of Vince. He was never none the wiser. Everybody
- 30:58Speaker 2: thought that Stone Cold had that he had really potato
- 31:01Speaker 2: stone Cold and was bleeding, but he had kept the blade.
- 31:06Speaker 2: The tape is all the way around with the tiny
- 31:08Speaker 2: bit of it exposed, and usually you tape it to
- 31:10Speaker 2: your wrist with wrist tape, and Brett told me that
- 31:13Speaker 2: he had stuck it in his gums, So for the
- 31:15Speaker 2: entirety of the match, he had a blade stuck in
- 31:17Speaker 2: his gums. And then of course cut stone Cold takes
- 31:21Speaker 2: him into the ring, puts Stone Cold on the sharp shooter.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Stone Cold refuses to give up, and that was by
- 31:28Speaker 2: design because he had no real submission moves and they
- 31:31Speaker 2: had given him this finish where it had to be
- 31:33Speaker 2: a submission, And so Brett puts him in the sharp
- 31:36Speaker 2: shooter and he's like, the only way this works is
- 31:38Speaker 2: if the people in the three hundreds can see how
- 31:40Speaker 2: much pain you're in, and that's why you have to
- 31:42Speaker 2: get cut and he was right, because it's legendary. The
- 31:47Speaker 2: Stone Cold is bleeding from his face, he's pushing, he's
- 31:49Speaker 2: refusing to give up, and then he just passes out
- 31:51Speaker 2: and they ring the bell. And basically Stone Cold is
- 31:56Speaker 2: forever in Brett Hart's debt and loves him dearly, and
- 31:59Speaker 2: the love go two ways. Brett loves Stone Cold as well.
- 32:02Speaker 2: We all love Stone Cold from Texas because we're all
- 32:05Speaker 2: you know, he's from Victoria and I'm from Austin and
- 32:07Speaker 2: Stone Cold lived in Austin for a long time and
- 32:10Speaker 2: he just at that point made Stone Cold's career. And uh,
- 32:15Speaker 2: Steve has said this many times himself, and so it's
- 32:19Speaker 2: just to have these this this guy who I idolize,
- 32:22Speaker 2: tell me these stories and then have that match inducted
- 32:26Speaker 2: into the Hall of Fame this year at WrestleMania and
- 32:28Speaker 2: be able to sit with Brett his wife that night
- 32:30Speaker 2: after it happens.
- 32:31Speaker 5: Was was was stone Cold resistant at all to any
- 32:34Speaker 5: of sort of like where where Brett thought, yeah, oh
- 32:38Speaker 5: he was.
- 32:39Speaker 2: He was at some point when the blade came out.
- 32:42Speaker 2: He says that Steve was like, don't do it, don't
- 32:44Speaker 2: do it. Oh, and then Brett was like, it's too
- 32:46Speaker 2: late and then and so they but then you know,
- 32:52Speaker 2: ever since then, it's been uh, it's been louded as
- 32:55Speaker 2: the probably the restaurant in you match. But anyway, after
- 32:59Speaker 2: I met with at that first time when we were
- 33:01Speaker 2: Reds Diner, he gives me a Hitman hat from Roots
- 33:05Speaker 2: of Fight. This podcast is brought to you by Trader
- 33:08Speaker 2: Joe's and Roots of Fight. And he gives me the
- 33:13Speaker 2: hat and he gives me his book and in the
- 33:16Speaker 2: book he signed the book and his signature is there.
- 33:20Speaker 2: And it's so funny because I remember, it's as if
- 33:22Speaker 2: that signature is emblazoned in my mind because when he
- 33:26Speaker 2: gives the shades out, he signs them, he pre signs them.
- 33:29Speaker 2: So I had seen his signature throughout my childhood on
- 33:32Speaker 2: that pair of shades that he had given my brother,
- 33:35Speaker 2: and now I'm looking at it again thirty years later,
- 33:40Speaker 2: thirty five years yeah, thirty something years later in on
- 33:44Speaker 2: the front jacket of his book, and I was like, wow,
- 33:46Speaker 2: that's so crazy. I remember this.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Only difference was now it has four hearts, where previously
- 33:52Speaker 2: it only had three, because each heart is representative one
- 33:55Speaker 2: of his children. And at the time he gave those
- 33:57Speaker 2: to my brother. And when we were at that show,
- 33:59Speaker 2: he only had three kids. Oh and since then he's
- 34:01Speaker 2: had his daughter, Beans, who's obviously an adult now. But
- 34:04Speaker 2: and I just remember seeing that. I took all that
- 34:07Speaker 2: home and I go back to my house and once
- 34:08Speaker 2: again I was like, you look like a goddamn kid.
- 34:11Speaker 2: So I have the hat on, I have the book.
- 34:22Speaker 1: But it's so hard not to man, because I grew
- 34:25Speaker 1: up with with wrestling, to the Undertaker was my favorite. Yeah,
- 34:29Speaker 1: but as I was I was, as I was growing up,
- 34:31Speaker 1: you know, it was still very much bibuly And then
- 34:34Speaker 1: all of a sudden, I ended up doing that seventy show,
- 34:36Speaker 1: and that seventies show decides to do a wrestling episode
- 34:41Speaker 1: in partnership with WWF.
- 34:43Speaker 2: That's right, WWF, and they especially in the seventies, well
- 34:48Speaker 2: in the seventies, Yeah, it was the WWWF back then,
- 34:52Speaker 2: so they stand.
- 34:54Speaker 1: The coolest part about it was that they decided, okay, well,
- 34:57Speaker 1: you know, we're going to do this special episode. And
- 34:59Speaker 1: we were the number one comedy so it was like
- 35:01Speaker 1: easy to get these cameos. So they send all their
- 35:05Speaker 1: up and comers, you know, they send the hardy boys,
- 35:10Speaker 1: then they send Can Shamrock.
- 35:13Speaker 2: And the Rock Up and Comers.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Bro. That was the rocks first acting gig. By the way,
- 35:20Speaker 1: that was his first time him being on like a
- 35:22Speaker 1: TV show, like oh wow, besides like wrestling or whatever.
- 35:24Speaker 1: So he had to do this scene where he was
- 35:26Speaker 1: kind of playing his dad. Yes, yeah, there is this
- 35:30Speaker 1: actually hilarious picture. It's just me dressed dance faz in
- 35:35Speaker 1: between can Shamrock and the Rock and They're both doing
- 35:37Speaker 1: this like they're punping and I'm like pretending scaring.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Such a great epic picture for me, that is.
- 35:44Speaker 1: But the point is like these guys roll up and
- 35:46Speaker 1: they do like some little stunt stuff and they'll show whatever.
- 35:49Speaker 1: But you know, like we're looking at the hardy boys,
- 35:51Speaker 1: and I'm looking at the kN Shamrock doing the year
- 35:54Speaker 1: where he had just like left the UFC and joined
- 35:57Speaker 1: right right, And to me that was a huge Well
- 36:00Speaker 1: I still am. I'm one of the most massive UFC fans.
- 36:03Speaker 1: And Dana White was a dear friend is still very
- 36:06Speaker 1: much a dear friend of mine. He would put me
- 36:09Speaker 1: in the front road, you know.
- 36:10Speaker 3: And then I.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Became friends with all those guys right like Rampitch Jackson
- 36:14Speaker 1: a huge like.
- 36:16Speaker 2: A huge fan like you and I both know Spiders, yes,
- 36:18Speaker 2: and Anderson who's.
- 36:20Speaker 1: The Michael Jordan of MMA, and and uh so, then
- 36:24Speaker 1: when Ken Shawnrock, who was one of my first heroes off.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Jeez Man back with the old man old logo, you know,
- 36:32Speaker 2: like the original one hundred percent and like he was
- 36:34Speaker 2: the baddest man on the planet.
- 36:36Speaker 1: You know, he shows up to the set of seventy
- 36:39Speaker 1: show bro my brain just like exploded, like like.
- 36:44Speaker 3: I'm doing and I'm looking at the Rock.
- 36:46Speaker 1: He's like, you know, he's doing the eyebrow thing, and
- 36:48Speaker 1: like at that time, everyone in the said, He's like
- 36:50Speaker 1: what is he doing with the eyebrow thing?
- 36:51Speaker 3: It was like because he was.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Like looking out and he's like the most you know,
- 36:54Speaker 1: my son will be the most electrified man.
- 36:56Speaker 2: And you know, like he was doing the whole thing,
- 36:58Speaker 2: you know.
- 36:58Speaker 3: And everyone's like what is was that time? Was he
- 37:03Speaker 3: started off as like a good guy okay.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and then he did he they he was he
- 37:09Speaker 2: they wouldn't receive him as this good guy that they
- 37:11Speaker 2: were trying to push it that he made his choice
- 37:13Speaker 2: to turn into this kind of turn. That's how he
- 37:15Speaker 2: became the most electrifying man in sports. Entertainment. How about
- 37:18Speaker 2: that's so crazy. That's so crazy because that is it's
- 37:23Speaker 2: it's it's our business is so funny because you know,
- 37:26Speaker 2: we're actors, but we want to be musicians, and the
- 37:28Speaker 2: musicians want to be actors. We all want to be athletes,
- 37:30Speaker 2: and the athletes want to be actors. It's just and
- 37:33Speaker 2: and and just to see how that all intersects. You know,
- 37:36Speaker 2: right now you talk about the UFC, which I absolutely
- 37:38Speaker 2: love as well, and the we're I was just at
- 37:43Speaker 2: UFC three fifteen with some of my Terminal List cast
- 37:47Speaker 2: mates because we were there as guests of Valentina Schifchinko,
- 37:50Speaker 2: which is the Flyway champion of the world, and she
- 37:54Speaker 2: is going to be She's just started acting. She was
- 37:56Speaker 2: in a picture called Bruised with Holly Berry and it
- 37:59Speaker 2: was just a now that she is joining our cast,
- 38:01Speaker 2: and we were there to see her to support her
- 38:03Speaker 2: because we knew we were in this trying to work
- 38:05Speaker 2: out this deal so she can join the cast. So
- 38:08Speaker 2: Valentina is going to be in The Terminalist with us
- 38:10Speaker 2: and we're going to share some scenes together, and so
- 38:14Speaker 2: we got to go see her in her fight and
- 38:15Speaker 2: the whole time it's just like, first of all, Valentina,
- 38:19Speaker 2: please win this fight. She was playing. She was fighting
- 38:22Speaker 2: mine On Fiarro, who was a great kickboxer, big big gal,
- 38:26Speaker 2: big for flyway and uh and number two, please please
- 38:31Speaker 2: don't hit her in the face. And not only did
- 38:36Speaker 2: she just she barely got touched because she was so smart.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I don't know if she even had this in the
- 38:41Speaker 2: back of her mind. I'm sure she didn't, but she
- 38:43Speaker 2: knews that she has. She knows that she has this
- 38:45Speaker 2: acting gig that she has potentially in a couple of months,
- 38:48Speaker 2: and of course it'll be much sweeter. She's still the
- 38:50Speaker 2: flyweight champion of the world, and of course it'll be
- 38:54Speaker 2: much easier if her face is and complete. Bits. You know,
- 38:59Speaker 2: she needs to have just a masterful, masterful performance, she said,
- 39:06Speaker 2: mine On, great, big, long limbs, great kickboxer, kept going
- 39:10Speaker 2: with this head kick, and without fail, every single attempt
- 39:14Speaker 2: Valentina pulls it. She pulls every single one, just whips
- 39:18Speaker 2: out front of her face and then she and then
- 39:21Speaker 2: she would counter every single time min On through this
- 39:23Speaker 2: this roundhouse to her head.
- 39:25Speaker 1: That was the game plan. I mean, there was a
- 39:28Speaker 1: no knowledge that kick was going to be coming over.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so they just crashed some time she pulled it,
- 39:33Speaker 2: not one of them had it, and I was like, wow,
- 39:35Speaker 2: this is incredible, and then she has She won the
- 39:37Speaker 2: fight that night was incredible as well because Josei Ado
- 39:41Speaker 2: I believe he won that fight. And I was just
- 39:42Speaker 2: talking to Anderson at the Ballerina premiere. What did he think?
- 39:45Speaker 2: He thought j W as well. We all thought he
- 39:47Speaker 2: did so. But apparently Aldo took the gloves off, retired
- 39:50Speaker 2: in the ring. Epic night. U uh we uh who else?
- 39:57Speaker 2: What else happened that night?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Yeah, that UFC.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Car JDM won the championship. That was pretty crazy. That
- 40:05Speaker 2: was nice. So yeah, we just had We had an
- 40:09Speaker 2: amazing time. And then we went and had a pizza
- 40:11Speaker 2: party with as one Valentina. Valentina let me hold her belt,
- 40:18Speaker 2: We said there, took photos together, We all had a
- 40:19Speaker 2: pizza because she hadn't had pizza in a few few weeks.
- 40:22Speaker 2: We had a pizza party. After you win defend your
- 40:25Speaker 2: flyweight champions I.
- 40:26Speaker 5: Just did a movie with Speaking of wrestlers wanting to act,
- 40:30Speaker 5: I just did a movie with Charlotte Flair.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Ric Flair's daughter shout out. Shout out to
- 40:34Speaker 2: Ashley Uh.
- 40:37Speaker 3: It was.
- 40:37Speaker 5: She was lovely, wonderful and and and such a great actress.
- 40:42Speaker 2: And I was like, this is your first movie.
- 40:44Speaker 5: She was so prepared and so like, so spot on.
- 40:48Speaker 2: You know, that's pretty awesome.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Yeah, she's a legend number and that she's earned her
- 40:53Speaker 2: own legendary status.
- 40:55Speaker 5: Yeah. And I'm becoming more you know, I used to
- 40:57Speaker 5: watch wrestling when I was a kid and then sort of.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Fell out out of it.
- 41:01Speaker 5: But I've I've recently been trying to get familiar with
- 41:04Speaker 5: the times and and and you.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Know, people like her.
- 41:07Speaker 5: You know, we would walk around with her and she
- 41:09Speaker 5: was like the beatles Man. Yeah, yeah, we're the Dominican
- 41:12Speaker 5: Republican people be like, oh my god. You know.
- 41:16Speaker 2: And that's the crazy thing about that old stuff, you know,
- 41:18Speaker 2: it's it's we all love it as kids, of course,
- 41:21Speaker 2: but now it's such big business. It's it's uh the
- 41:25Speaker 2: w W E, d UFC or under the same umbrella
- 41:27Speaker 2: of course, ko and it's it's it's it's an entertainment conglomerate, right,
- 41:33Speaker 2: you know. And it's just and yeah, but they they're there.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Athleticism can never be short changed because it is a
- 41:42Speaker 2: extremely physical.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I think they're the most the most fit, well rounded
- 41:46Speaker 1: athlete in the world. I mean, when people specialize for
- 41:49Speaker 1: a sport, you know, your body morphs into what he
- 41:52Speaker 1: needs to be for that. Mixed martial arts, it's like
- 41:55Speaker 1: everything in your body has to be a weapon and
- 41:57Speaker 1: it has to function and it has to be throwing
- 42:00Speaker 1: faster than the other person.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Yeah, you think about the I mean, it's just a
- 42:04Speaker 3: well rounded thing.
- 42:05Speaker 2: It is, Yeah, and it's it's something you know, I'm
- 42:08Speaker 2: a big kind of I'm a boxing purist in a
- 42:10Speaker 2: lot of ways. And but the thing about the UFC is,
- 42:18Speaker 2: while some people will become masters of a certain discipline,
- 42:23Speaker 2: you can't. You can never completely lean on that. And
- 42:26Speaker 2: you're and both hemispheres of your body have to be
- 42:29Speaker 2: active and you and they have to be able to respond,
- 42:31Speaker 2: You have to be able to engage. You have to
- 42:33Speaker 2: have them kind of act independently of each other in
- 42:36Speaker 2: a lot of ways, which is which is an important
- 42:40Speaker 2: skill set, spherical kind of way of being. And that's
- 42:44Speaker 2: what Rouce Lee. We talked about Bruce Lee earlier in
- 42:46Speaker 2: the daw Jikundola. That's exactly what he was. He was.
- 42:49Speaker 2: He was probably the world's first mixed martial artists, and
- 42:52Speaker 2: that's what they always claim, you know, that's what the
- 42:54Speaker 2: and right rightfully so, because that was his approach, to
- 42:59Speaker 2: not get tight in to any specific discipline, to not
- 43:03Speaker 2: narrow your your view of the world, because that's what
- 43:08Speaker 2: martial arts was to him. It was a man if.
- 43:12Speaker 2: It was a expression, a manifestation of the world through
- 43:15Speaker 2: your body in a very spherical way. And that's yeah,
- 43:19Speaker 2: to be able to to be ready in every direction,
- 43:24Speaker 2: be able to pivot in any direction. It's it's useful
- 43:27Speaker 2: in every in in all ways in your life, you know,
- 43:30Speaker 2: I think I think it's it's a the mental aspect
- 43:35Speaker 2: of that is applicable to us as actors. The it's
- 43:39Speaker 2: it's it's applicable to to my work, the work that
- 43:42Speaker 2: I have to do on the gun, where I'm working
- 43:43Speaker 2: on terminalists, for instance, to the idea that both you know,
- 43:48Speaker 2: both halves your body are working independently of each other,
- 43:50Speaker 2: but towards the same end. You know, to be able
- 43:53Speaker 2: to corporate that right and flow with these right, So
- 43:57Speaker 2: you're right, I think truly it is the most well rounded.
- 44:00Speaker 5: And did you do some additional training, did you incorporate somebody?
- 44:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we've we've done a lot of that we've done.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Of course we had to for Terminal List, right, for Terminalists.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what is that your next thing right now?
- 44:12Speaker 2: Because that's what I'm working on. Then, right, next thing
- 44:17Speaker 2: to come out will be a show that I shot
- 44:18Speaker 2: also in Toronto called Double in Disguise. It's about the
- 44:21Speaker 2: John Wayne Gacy case where I play Detective Rafael Tovar,
- 44:26Speaker 2: who is was the lead investigator on the John Wayne
- 44:29Speaker 2: Gacey case in Chicago at the time. Amazing in the
- 44:32Speaker 2: in the seventies and what's the time, who was a
- 44:35Speaker 2: Texas guy from Crystal City, Texas who moved to Chicago
- 44:38Speaker 2: because they were looking for bilingual people to be police officers,
- 44:42Speaker 2: and then he finds himself as a lead investigator on
- 44:44Speaker 2: this horrific case that should be coming out on Peacock
- 44:49Speaker 2: in the fall.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Uh.
- 44:50Speaker 2: And then I'm currently in production on the Terminal List,
- 44:52Speaker 2: which should come out sometime next year.
- 44:54Speaker 3: And that's uh, the Terminal List. Yeah, yeah, my first
- 44:57Speaker 3: he's Nancy, were the bad guys?
- 45:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true, that's right, is that?
- 45:03Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 45:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's where the suspects of them big us guys
- 45:08Speaker 1: there were Yeah.
- 45:09Speaker 2: I mean, hey, all the way up to Sect death Man,
- 45:12Speaker 2: a lot of people You're gonna trust anybody. There are
- 45:14Speaker 2: a lot of people involved that conspiracy.
- 45:19Speaker 3: M but I love that show. Terminal List. Say, when
- 45:28Speaker 3: I read that you were on it, I was.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Like, Chris, Chris does a great job. He's a great
- 45:33Speaker 2: leader on that show. He's he's he's uh pulled together
- 45:36Speaker 2: an awesome team. Jared Shaw, Max Adams, Raymondoza worked on
- 45:40Speaker 2: the first season is also a ta He of course
- 45:43Speaker 2: co directed Warfare with Alex Garland. I worked with Raymondoza
- 45:47Speaker 2: on True Detective many years ago, our head military advisor.
- 45:52Speaker 2: There was guy named Mark Simos. I think Chick Daniels
- 45:55Speaker 2: also worked on that the fella I mentioned before who
- 45:58Speaker 2: I worked with on Mattador. But as far as like
- 46:01Speaker 2: the seal teams and maneuvers, Mark Simos and Raymondoza they
- 46:04Speaker 2: were on their there, they were on the teams at
- 46:06Speaker 2: the same time, their first platoon they were, they were
- 46:09Speaker 2: uh deployed together. And uh, I love ray I mean,
- 46:13Speaker 2: and I'm so proud of him and what he was
- 46:16Speaker 2: able to accomplish with the Warfare film, which is authenticity
- 46:19Speaker 2: to a t. I mean it's it's uh, it's so
- 46:23Speaker 2: devoid of any kind of morality play. It's it is
- 46:27Speaker 2: completely devoid of any Hollywood bullshit. Every single round is
- 46:33Speaker 2: fired with having with a choice having been made, a
- 46:37Speaker 2: decision being made, the action. There's no super heroics. There's
- 46:42Speaker 2: just people trying to survive and trying to execute a
- 46:45Speaker 2: mission and eventually trying to extract casualties from this from
- 46:48Speaker 2: this scenario. And it's just a beautiful I mean, beautiful
- 46:52Speaker 2: is an interesting word to use, but it's a a
- 46:54Speaker 2: very impactful film, one that I'm still kind of thinking
- 46:56Speaker 2: about as I as I sit here. But Ray is
- 47:02Speaker 2: special and and he and Jared Shaw and Max Adams,
- 47:04Speaker 2: all the people who are our military advisers are amazing.
- 47:07Speaker 2: And they definitely have equipped us with the Rex skill
- 47:09Speaker 2: sets to move and make it look real. And you
- 47:13Speaker 2: know what I noticed too. But Ray was like, man,
- 47:16Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Jared was like, you know when we cast you,
- 47:19Speaker 2: this is another thing. When I took the meeting about
- 47:22Speaker 2: these got to do this job. Uh, you know, they're
- 47:26Speaker 2: asking me a lot of serious questions about conflict, about fighting,
- 47:28Speaker 2: why I feel about fighting. You know, My whole thing
- 47:31Speaker 2: is much with the characters I play much like the
- 47:34Speaker 2: characters I play, which I guess are just me and
- 47:37Speaker 2: all the facets of me. It's it's to be both
- 47:41Speaker 2: lying and lamb, you know, to be powerful towards the
- 47:47Speaker 2: towards the the for the benefit, for the protection of others,
- 47:50Speaker 2: and the strength to be utilized in that way, but
- 47:53Speaker 2: also to have the vulnerability and the softness inside to
- 47:56Speaker 2: care and be compassionate, to find the strike the balance,
- 47:58Speaker 2: you know. And that that's what I told them, you know,
- 48:01Speaker 2: I told them about the times I've been in fist fights,
- 48:03Speaker 2: and you know, but not in any kind of braggadocious way.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Just so this the sheer fact of it. Every single
- 48:08Speaker 2: every single one of those stories involved coming to someone
- 48:12Speaker 2: else's aid. And because you can say what you want
- 48:16Speaker 2: to me and maybe even you might be able to
- 48:19Speaker 2: strike me. Ah. But once that that force and that
- 48:24Speaker 2: Vince has turned to somebody who can't defend themselves, that's
- 48:26Speaker 2: where the line is drunk. And I was making this
- 48:28Speaker 2: clear of them, it turns my philosophy about fighting, and
- 48:32Speaker 2: they uh, And then they got to a point where
- 48:35Speaker 2: at the end of the at the end of the meeting,
- 48:37Speaker 2: they're like, they're like gave you're you're the guys. You're
- 48:40Speaker 2: perfect for this, and not just because of that what
- 48:43Speaker 2: I know about you and and how you because the
- 48:47Speaker 2: story won of the story has told us about me
- 48:48Speaker 2: coming into the aid. My buddy Beck Bennett used to
- 48:50Speaker 2: be on Satday yight Line and we got into a
- 48:52Speaker 2: bar fight and at the White Horse and.
- 48:54Speaker 3: In Austin, Austin.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the that's a long story. I won't tell
- 49:01Speaker 2: her here. The you knows. And then one of the
- 49:05Speaker 2: guys pipes up Max, He's like, you know, we know
- 49:08Speaker 2: you're the right guy, not just because the stories you
- 49:10Speaker 2: just told her, maybe you because you helping your buddy
- 49:13Speaker 2: back Bennett get out of his barfight, but because you
- 49:17Speaker 2: are both lying and lamb in the sense that the
- 49:19Speaker 2: lamb was on display when you did a dance contest
- 49:22Speaker 2: with my daughter in Chicago at a comic Con event
- 49:27Speaker 2: where they came up to your table, when you treated
- 49:28Speaker 2: her with such respect and such love, and I'm so
- 49:31Speaker 2: thankful for that, he told me. And the dance contest, yeah,
- 49:34Speaker 2: she came up, she started dancing. She wanted she wanted
- 49:36Speaker 2: to like have a dance off. And I remembered this
- 49:39Speaker 2: and I was like oh, I do remember that he
- 49:40Speaker 2: had a video. He's like, here's a video of it.
- 49:42Speaker 2: And then she had just she just came to set
- 49:45Speaker 2: like two or three weeks ago. She made me a
- 49:46Speaker 2: little bracelet and everything else, and she's like, I made
- 49:49Speaker 2: you yours with the large beads. Everyone, you're the only
- 49:51Speaker 2: one that has the large because we're friends from a
- 49:54Speaker 2: long time. Think you're right, but that is that is
- 49:58Speaker 2: just these things you never know. Oh, that's why you
- 50:02Speaker 2: make full encounters and you treat people with respect because
- 50:06Speaker 2: down the line, down the road, you don't know how
- 50:08Speaker 2: things shake out. And this is an instance where I'm
- 50:09Speaker 2: now this is executive producer, former Army Ranger is more
- 50:15Speaker 2: inclined to trust me because he's seen these aspects that
- 50:20Speaker 2: that he needs for this character, the strength and and
- 50:23Speaker 2: the h and the tenderness in a way, and he's
- 50:26Speaker 2: seen them on display in the flesh kind of around
- 50:29Speaker 2: the work, around the way.
- 50:30Speaker 1: And I said, you know, speaking of respect, and as
- 50:32Speaker 1: as we close the show, one of the things that
- 50:36Speaker 1: I've noticed in every interview you've ever done and every
- 50:39Speaker 1: encounter I have with you, you always have made a.
- 50:41Speaker 3: Point of remembering.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Every individual that it's a part of telling the story.
- 50:48Speaker 1: You give them their flowers, you know their first and
- 50:50Speaker 1: last name, and you're making sure that every time you
- 50:52Speaker 1: bring up a job, you know, you make sure you
- 50:55Speaker 1: mentioned every single person that that touched your process, and
- 50:59Speaker 1: you give them their flowers, and you give them their
- 51:01Speaker 1: credit and and for them, you know, sometimes it's just.
- 51:06Speaker 3: Being remembered, you know. It's it's not about the credit.
- 51:08Speaker 1: It's about just like remember, being remembered that we all
- 51:11Speaker 1: shared a very special storytelling moment, you know.
- 51:15Speaker 3: And look, this is like the so the signs.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Of other people behind, you know, behind us remember and
- 51:22Speaker 1: then thinking about us, you know. But but but Gary,
- 51:26Speaker 1: I'm so stoked that you spend all this time with us,
- 51:28Speaker 1: here to do with us, and and that you were
- 51:29Speaker 1: able to share all those amazing stories. Brought up so
- 51:31Speaker 1: much memories of all the things that you know, we
- 51:34Speaker 1: we've kind of coexisted with and uh, you know, we
- 51:37Speaker 1: were just so thrilled to be able to tell you
- 51:40Speaker 1: how much we we love you and respect you and
- 51:42Speaker 1: can't wait to see you wait and win and I
- 51:46Speaker 1: love you.
- 51:46Speaker 2: Guys, and that's just it's uh, it's even at this
- 51:52Speaker 2: moment to to to like kind of tread the stones
- 51:56Speaker 2: that you guys laid, and that's that's that's the truth
- 51:59Speaker 2: of it, you know. And uh, I kind of made
- 52:02Speaker 2: my bones a little later in my career. And you
- 52:05Speaker 2: guys at such young ages were able to to deliver
- 52:10Speaker 2: and to make people respect us, to make people respect you,
- 52:14Speaker 2: so that the door was open when I got there,
- 52:16Speaker 2: and I intend to make sure the door's open for
- 52:19Speaker 2: people behind me. And that's how we keep doing it.
- 52:22Speaker 1: Man, you're making your culture incredibly proud. Do you wanna
