Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to another episode of the Lovable
- 0:10Speaker 1: Reunion podcasts. We have two very special guests today with
- 0:15Speaker 1: Travis Wood and Mike Borzia. They were massive parts of
- 0:19Speaker 1: our success in twenty sixteen and cannot wait to get
- 0:21Speaker 1: into it with them.
- 0:22Speaker 2: The reason why this is special is there are certain
- 0:26Speaker 2: groups within the team that talkball pitching. Mike was our
- 0:32Speaker 2: strategist for game calling, ran the catchers, very important coach
- 0:36Speaker 2: for me, and a lot of back and forth in
- 0:39Speaker 2: conversations would he obviously being a pitcher and a part
- 0:42Speaker 2: time left fielder, and absolutely Rakes as a pitcher. This
- 0:48Speaker 2: was kind of our group and these guys together are
- 0:51Speaker 2: probably some of the most entertaining, knowledgeable and been around
- 0:55Speaker 2: the coast for a long time with Riz for some
- 0:58Speaker 2: dark days before the light hit. So's welcome these two
- 1:01Speaker 2: to the podcast. Yeah, guys, what let's have.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Let's talk about because us three are really the only
- 1:11Speaker 1: three from that team in sixteen that fucking went through
- 1:15Speaker 1: the dog days here we dunk right.
- 1:19Speaker 3: What weird about that is every spring we would go
- 1:23Speaker 3: through spring, but we're not gonna be as bad as
- 1:25Speaker 3: everybody thinks, Like we actually got a squad and then
- 1:28Speaker 3: it was awful.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I remember one of my first spring trainings, Dale Swam,
- 1:32Speaker 1: great manager, great person, great baseball mind, promised us in
- 1:36Speaker 1: twenty twelve, I promise you you're gonna win sixty games,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and you're gonna lose sixty games, And it's those other
- 1:42Speaker 1: twenty that are the difference makers, right yep or thirty whatever,
- 1:47Speaker 1: it is thirty two and we lost one hundred plus
- 1:50Speaker 1: games after one. And I remember saying, Dall, you lied
- 1:52Speaker 1: to us in screen training.
- 1:55Speaker 3: We lost awful in twelve and ninety nine and thirteen
- 1:59Speaker 3: were total of two hundred woo combined years.
- 2:02Speaker 1: We lost one hundred year we had When we got
- 2:04Speaker 1: my first spring training in Chicago, we were rolling out
- 2:07Speaker 1: baseballs in a shopping yes, and I go to Otis
- 2:10Speaker 1: Rec and pees Otis Hellman was the greatest clubhouse manager
- 2:14Speaker 1: in the world, And I go, Otis, I go, can
- 2:17Speaker 1: we get regular buckets for PP because that's the way
- 2:21Speaker 1: we always done it? And I go, well, we had
- 2:23Speaker 1: these fucking one around here in one hundred years, maybe
- 2:26Speaker 1: we should switch something up.
- 2:27Speaker 3: We had shopping cars, we had trumping carts market down
- 2:30Speaker 3: the streets. And then do you remember apparently we threw
- 2:34Speaker 3: too many baseballs in the stands, all.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Were yelling at us.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Yeah, the yonis started or just started keeping all the
- 2:40Speaker 3: scuff one he used to get rid of him.
- 2:42Speaker 4: He started keeping all the.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Scuff ones and pushed a new shopping card out to
- 2:45Speaker 3: the outfield for us to throw in there.
- 2:47Speaker 4: He's like, y'all, if y'all want to throw them, throw these.
- 2:48Speaker 5: It was it was low classes.
- 2:52Speaker 1: When do you guys think for us the organization shifted
- 2:56Speaker 1: because we were I mean, we went through so many
- 2:58Speaker 1: trade dons were selling man.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I would have to say it shifted at some point
- 3:04Speaker 3: in fourteen because what we lost one hundred and one,
- 3:07Speaker 3: we lost ninety nine, and then what we won seventy
- 3:10Speaker 3: something games in fourteen?
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we did, so we were on the up.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Is that the your theo got there, No steel got
- 3:16Speaker 1: there until yeah, we were all the.
- 3:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I kind of gutted it right. Yeah, he had
- 3:21Speaker 5: a plan and he got it plan.
- 3:23Speaker 3: It just wasn't we're not gonna go after it yet.
- 3:25Speaker 3: We're gonna see where we're at. We're gonna throw a
- 3:27Speaker 3: few filler spots in here and see see what sticks.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And then fourteen we actually won seventy something games and
- 3:34Speaker 3: then but we still got rid of the manager.
- 3:36Speaker 4: But that's when Joe came available, and the.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Moment we brought Leicester in, well yeah, and then you
- 3:43Speaker 3: came and then lacking right right right, and then big
- 3:47Speaker 3: holes field like KB came up and filled a big
- 3:50Speaker 3: void and dominated Schwarber.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I remember playing you guys in fourteen went the Red
- 3:55Speaker 2: Sox and are Hat almost to a no hitter, and
- 3:57Speaker 2: I played that game. He threw me a front door
- 4:00Speaker 2: or cutter at like ninety three, and I'm like, I've
- 4:02Speaker 2: never seen that, right, you know what I mean? So
- 4:05Speaker 2: that was part of my free agent thinking was like
- 4:07Speaker 2: there were they've already got a number one AREAA was nasty.
- 4:12Speaker 6: Some trades right where you started to get excited. That
- 4:17Speaker 6: one was a huge one where you're trading.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Three Feldman, Scott Feldman, Scott Feldman, Clevenger.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Clevenger's for stroke a.
- 4:31Speaker 5: Deal.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Wow, these guys show up. And I remember the phone
- 4:35Speaker 6: call from THEO and he's like, hey, we made a deal.
- 4:38Speaker 6: We moved Feldman and I said okay, and he goes.
- 4:41Speaker 6: Cleve had to go.
- 4:42Speaker 5: I said okay, and he goes.
- 4:44Speaker 6: We got Arieta, who didn't live up to his potential.
- 4:48Speaker 6: He goes, everyone has always liked this guy, but it
- 4:52Speaker 6: just never happened. And he had as and then strop
- 4:56Speaker 6: E goes and Strophie who can't throw strikes. So we'll
- 4:58Speaker 6: see to guys that just haven't really ever reached their
- 5:03Speaker 6: potential and then boy, did they reach their potential exactly can.
- 5:09Speaker 5: It's a lot of credit.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah, like.
- 5:14Speaker 3: The mechanics correct. He knew how to fix you on
- 5:17Speaker 3: the side, knew how to fix you on the side.
- 5:20Speaker 6: I wouldn't take as as much as I would take
- 5:23Speaker 6: any pitching coach when it came to those things.
- 5:25Speaker 2: If he mechanics, if.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Bos got to see you when you were dialed in
- 5:29Speaker 3: the moment it got off, he saw Boss could see it,
- 5:32Speaker 3: he'd be like, hey, this is what you're doing.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And the best part about Bozzio too is he was
- 5:36Speaker 1: his own party of one character. He was at it
- 5:39Speaker 1: was he was. He was part of the dynamic of
- 5:41Speaker 1: this team that like, if we didn't have him, we
- 5:43Speaker 1: don't win. And we say that every single guy, and it's.
- 5:46Speaker 3: He was the bully that kept everybody honest.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Respected though he respected the hell out of them, loved them.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Remember when he started a pitching meeting without me there
- 5:57Speaker 2: in my first year. I remember I was the players
- 6:01Speaker 2: I've never been. I came at him because he was
- 6:06Speaker 2: about to have my back and I was hitting or something,
- 6:08Speaker 2: and everybody's we're screaming ready for a game, and left me.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And him were face to face so angry, and he plays.
- 6:18Speaker 5: But that's what I explained that story.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, please please. That's why I brought it
- 6:22Speaker 2: up for you to tell the story.
- 6:24Speaker 6: So before a series, you go and you have a
- 6:28Speaker 6: meeting with the entire pitching staff, starters and relievers and
- 6:31Speaker 6: catchers and catchers most of the time and sometimes because
- 6:36Speaker 6: he didn't want to. The meeting is usually posted or
- 6:40Speaker 6: scheduled for whatever reason that the everything got messed up.
- 6:46Speaker 6: So we're in the food room where we're gonna talk
- 6:49Speaker 6: about the report and how we're going to attack hitters.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Ross He's not in there, and Boz is like, let's go,
- 6:58Speaker 6: let's start the meeting. I go, Rossie's not here.
- 7:00Speaker 5: He goes, all right, we'll give it another minute. And
- 7:05Speaker 5: I don't know if anyone.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Went to look for you or not, but all I
- 7:09Speaker 6: know is Bos finally goes, fuck it start, and I'm like,
- 7:14Speaker 6: I knew it was a bad idea.
- 7:16Speaker 5: When I did it, I'm like, this isn't gonna go well.
- 7:20Speaker 5: I go over the whole report, but halfway through, do
- 7:23Speaker 5: you remember the door opens there he is Rossy looks
- 7:29Speaker 5: and instead of coming in, he the door. I mean,
- 7:37Speaker 5: this isn't gonna go well for me.
- 7:39Speaker 7: I know I'm gonna get blamed for sure enough, he's
- 7:44Speaker 7: catching That day, we go out, him and I play
- 7:48Speaker 7: catch because I would get him loose game.
- 7:50Speaker 5: Now, after we play catch, I'm like.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Oh, maybe he's not upset.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Maybe, And then out of nowhere, right like three minutes later,
- 7:59Speaker 5: he goes and you're.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Building before a game.
- 8:06Speaker 2: You're supposed to have my back, and I go, fuck you,
- 8:10Speaker 2: like he was. We were.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I tried.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I told him there, me and him.
- 8:18Speaker 5: It was the beginning of where Twitter was the thing
- 8:21Speaker 5: and it was all over. That was the beginning of.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Our we were. I thought we were tighter after that
- 8:26Speaker 2: because it was just like you knew where I stood,
- 8:28Speaker 2: and the same thing, like you're you're big into like
- 8:32Speaker 2: this is the beauty of the teams.
- 8:34Speaker 4: The only reason why you're getting into because you're both
- 8:36Speaker 4: the beadle.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, me and what me and Woody would
- 8:40Speaker 1: argue all the time to just for all the years
- 8:42Speaker 1: he would he was actually a really good hitting coach
- 8:45Speaker 1: as a pitcher and taught me a lot more than
- 8:47Speaker 1: I give him credit for. But fucking we've been together
- 8:50Speaker 1: for five, six, seven years, and he was, you need
- 8:54Speaker 1: to do this, Hey, do this? What do you shut
- 8:56Speaker 1: the funk up? But then I would, I would actually
- 8:59Speaker 1: and I would actually be doing doing it.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I'm like you, I know you don't want to listen
- 9:03Speaker 3: to me, I said, finally on time, said Rizzo, there's
- 9:06Speaker 3: a reason why I'm here early. I don't talk to
- 9:08Speaker 3: pitching coaches about pitching. I talked to hitting coaches about pitching.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I said, So that's how I learned how y'all think.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And if I see something of that can help you,
- 9:18Speaker 2: you might not want to listen to me, but.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I might not be wrong.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I don't. You're right. Nine times out of ten you
- 9:23Speaker 1: were right.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I give you.
- 9:23Speaker 6: I'm giving you the creak right now on a I
- 9:26Speaker 6: remember going back to the original topic here about twenty
- 9:31Speaker 6: twelve and thirteen, So building this championship club was we
- 9:39Speaker 6: knew like you got traded over from the Reds, so
- 9:43Speaker 6: you were hopefully going.
- 9:44Speaker 5: To be a piece, and you were a starter at
- 9:46Speaker 5: the time you.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Did well horrible spring.
- 9:49Speaker 5: I'll get to that.
- 9:50Speaker 8: So so now.
- 9:54Speaker 6: You knew you had pieces like damp Samarja Garza that
- 10:00Speaker 6: we were probably going to use to get pieces back
- 10:04Speaker 6: because we were so far away from being good and
- 10:07Speaker 6: the only people on the team that you knew were
- 10:09Speaker 6: going to be long term guys possibly were obviously Riz.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Who they got for Kashner, right, Starling.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Starlin Castro, and then you coming over, that's really like,
- 10:22Speaker 5: that was it?
- 10:23Speaker 2: That was it?
- 10:24Speaker 6: So that's three out of twenty five at the time,
- 10:28Speaker 6: so twenty two players no offense were We're not going
- 10:31Speaker 6: to be part of this going forward, even the good ones.
- 10:35Speaker 6: So then we Theo's like trying to angle trades and
- 10:39Speaker 6: we're going to trade this guy for this guy and
- 10:41Speaker 6: this guy for this guy.
- 10:42Speaker 5: And now the key was them getting a good return,
- 10:45Speaker 5: and you're like, okay, and THEO was on my ass.
- 10:49Speaker 2: You have to make sure guards a pitch as well.
- 10:51Speaker 5: The next two starts because he's fucking getting moved. Wow,
- 10:55Speaker 5: And I'm like, the reports are the reports, like I can't.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Try harbor Earth And he's like, you just make sure
- 11:02Speaker 6: he fucking pitches well so we can move it and
- 11:05Speaker 6: sure enough, like that's how it went.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And the Dempster trade to Texas, I believe.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Think about how good Think about how good Texas minor
- 11:14Speaker 3: league system was we because we twelve and thirteen. We
- 11:18Speaker 3: pulled our main core from Texas minor league.
- 11:21Speaker 5: System because they were ready to win.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yea, they wanted. Yeah, we had it right and we
- 11:27Speaker 2: had good pictures we did.
- 11:29Speaker 5: We did, I mean gars of Dempster, some Marsha, that's
- 11:32Speaker 5: pretty good.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Yeah, imagine if the guy that returns, I mean Yeaddy
- 11:36Speaker 2: and Wed that's where you got a credit draft j Yeah, those.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Guys, Carl So we got Kyle from there.
- 11:44Speaker 5: We got Kyle and yeah yeah, I mean we built.
- 11:48Speaker 1: We grinded these three here. You may have grinded on
- 11:52Speaker 1: your two year deals.
- 11:53Speaker 2: But I grind every day. I was a two twenty hitters.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I say, that's a good point.
- 11:57Speaker 5: I want to. I want to My career was a grind.

- 14:44Speaker 3: Book SG in the house.
- 14:47Speaker 1: So for anyone listening that's not familiar, Borz did all
- 14:51Speaker 1: the scaling reports for our pitchers. And when I say
- 14:55Speaker 1: he did the scouting reports, he was basically what the
- 14:58Speaker 1: new age, you know. He knew everything about everyone. He knew,
- 15:03Speaker 1: he knew their shoe size, he knew where they were from,
- 15:06Speaker 1: he knew their girlfriend, if they had a girlfriend, if
- 15:08Speaker 1: they just broke up, and he knew. He was like
- 15:09Speaker 1: a private investigator.
- 15:11Speaker 3: You got to take that back to his time with
- 15:13Speaker 3: the Yankees and the Nights.
- 15:14Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. How many rings
- 15:16Speaker 2: do you have? Boards five rings.
- 15:18Speaker 3: He came up with the best team and four with
- 15:20Speaker 3: the Yankees with the cups, and he learned from the best,
- 15:24Speaker 3: and he.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Would he would do it in the most authentic way
- 15:30Speaker 1: that I loved. And through my career when I was
- 15:34Speaker 1: really young, I think thirteen to maybe seventeen eighteen, after
- 15:38Speaker 1: every season, me and boys would sit down and he
- 15:40Speaker 1: would break me down and he would be like, Hey,
- 15:42Speaker 1: this is what you sucked at, this is what you
- 15:44Speaker 1: were really good at. And every off season I would
- 15:47Speaker 1: take his notes, he would write him down for me.
- 15:49Speaker 1: We'd go over him and I'd take him and I
- 15:51Speaker 1: would go into my off season and be all right,
- 15:52Speaker 1: this is what I'm working on this offseason, and I
- 15:54Speaker 1: would try to correct it. And then throughout the year too,
- 15:56Speaker 1: he would he would give me these little tidbits of
- 16:00Speaker 1: of information that were so crucial to me. Where again
- 16:05Speaker 1: I keep saying this about people I said about Hinsky
- 16:08Speaker 1: and how big they were. If I didn't have you
- 16:10Speaker 1: telling me these things, because during the year, it's so
- 16:13Speaker 1: hard to make adjustments, and you would always be there
- 16:16Speaker 1: barking at me, saying all right, well you fucking suck
- 16:18Speaker 1: right now, or you're really doing good at this. And
- 16:21Speaker 1: it was such a huge, I mean part of my career.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I'll say the other one more point to that just
- 16:28Speaker 2: about not to we're doing this to everybody. But like
- 16:32Speaker 2: Male said this about skiing about there's honesty and truth
- 16:35Speaker 2: that comes out of certain coaches like this guy is
- 16:37Speaker 2: kno going to sugarcoat it when it comes to you.
- 16:39Speaker 2: You're going to come in his office and he's ready
- 16:42Speaker 2: for you when you say something got but when you
- 16:45Speaker 2: got something because he's researched it, he studied it, and
- 16:48Speaker 2: he's trying to make everybody on the team better with
- 16:51Speaker 2: his process of what he does. We've been talking a
- 16:54Speaker 2: lot about the pieces of the puzzle for this whole sixteen.
- 16:56Speaker 3: So before y'all got there, my first two stars, they
- 16:59Speaker 3: weren't bad starts, but they weren't great starts. And I
- 17:02Speaker 3: would go in every after every game, because that was
- 17:04Speaker 3: back when you were in the video room, and all
- 17:06Speaker 3: he did was sit there and just watch the game,
- 17:07Speaker 3: put it in, watch the game, put it in, and
- 17:09Speaker 3: I'd be like.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Hey, how was it?
- 17:10Speaker 3: And he'd be like, it's fine, it's fine. I was like, Okay,
- 17:13Speaker 3: Secon game, how was it?
- 17:13Speaker 4: That's fine, it's fine.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Third game, how was It's fine?
- 17:16Speaker 4: It's fine?
- 17:17Speaker 3: And I didn't feel like it was I was like,
- 17:18Speaker 3: I said, I said, tell me the truth, and all
- 17:20Speaker 3: of a sudden, I don't know if he had a
- 17:21Speaker 3: clipboard something, but it just got slimmed down.
- 17:24Speaker 2: He said, you want to fucking know the truth, and I.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Said, yes, that's why I keep coming in here. He said,
- 17:29Speaker 3: you can't locate your fastball. You got a decent change up,
- 17:32Speaker 3: you can't throw a curveball, for shit, what do you expect?
- 17:37Speaker 2: I was like, that's our coaching staff skiz, like.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Honest, and I said, finally, that's what I've been looking for.
- 17:44Speaker 3: I said, so tell me now we can work on
- 17:46Speaker 3: it and now flat or fast forward when y'all get
- 17:50Speaker 3: here in fifteen, I think, were y'all both fifteen or
- 17:52Speaker 3: we need a job with fifteen?
- 17:54Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 17:54Speaker 3: Yeah, John, I'm like, hey, well, Boresy is awesome. You're
- 18:02Speaker 3: going to love him. You're gonna not like him at first,
- 18:05Speaker 3: I said, but you're going to love him and I
- 18:07Speaker 3: said because, And he's like, what do you mean?
- 18:11Speaker 2: And I said, I don't really want to explain it.
- 18:14Speaker 4: You just gotta talk to him.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And somehow it was after like his first or second start,
- 18:20Speaker 3: we all ended up at country club and I said, oh,
- 18:23Speaker 3: it's going to happen here, and I said, John, I said, just.
- 18:27Speaker 4: That, said John.
- 18:28Speaker 8: I said, you're going to want to fight him. I said,
- 18:32Speaker 8: but don't. And I said, just you can yell.
- 18:35Speaker 2: You can yell.
- 18:36Speaker 8: I said, but just listen, and by the end of
- 18:38Speaker 8: it you will understand.
- 18:40Speaker 3: I said, But he's so forward that because he doesn't sugarcoat,
- 18:43Speaker 3: and there's no point in it.
- 18:44Speaker 4: The only way you get better is to.
- 18:48Speaker 5: And oh.
- 18:49Speaker 3: They went at a shouting match back and forth across
- 18:53Speaker 3: the table, and John gets stood up and he came
- 18:56Speaker 3: to me.
- 18:56Speaker 4: He's like, I hate that motherfucker right there.
- 18:58Speaker 2: I hate him, hate him.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Minutes later, they're back talking. Twenty minutes after that.
- 19:02Speaker 2: He was like, dude, you were right.
- 19:04Speaker 5: He was like, you just have to know he like
- 19:06Speaker 5: he knows his ship best. And I was like, yes,
- 19:09Speaker 5: but you get the assist on that.
- 19:11Speaker 6: When you guys first came over, I'm like, I mean,
- 19:13Speaker 6: you guys, you know, have accomplished a lot won elsewhere
- 19:18Speaker 6: with Boston, so it's like you got to tread lightly
- 19:20Speaker 6: as a coach, like you've already had success. I have
- 19:26Speaker 6: thoughts of my own, but you guys have already, you know,
- 19:30Speaker 6: climbed to the mountaintop. So it's like I gotta pick
- 19:33Speaker 6: my spots on how I'm going to present what I
- 19:35Speaker 6: think can still help.
- 19:38Speaker 2: And then you were the one that told John eventually
- 19:41Speaker 2: like let's buy in.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Like it's it is real. Like but you you, as
- 19:47Speaker 5: a coach, you have to you have to time it right,
- 19:50Speaker 5: especially with veteran veteran players, especially to.
- 19:54Speaker 2: A new team.
- 19:54Speaker 1: That's right, that is that is such one oh one
- 19:58Speaker 1: feel that has been You can't you can't teach that
- 20:02Speaker 1: in baseball. We are so guarded as baseball players. Just
- 20:06Speaker 1: to explain to audience that if a coach comes to you,
- 20:09Speaker 1: I had a coach one time, never met him and
- 20:13Speaker 1: starts talking to me about my first starts talking about
- 20:16Speaker 1: some defensive stuff and I'm just hey, I'm Anthony, Like,
- 20:19Speaker 1: nice to meet you. Let's grab a beer. I learned
- 20:21Speaker 1: that from job Master. I learned that from Joe Matten,
- 20:24Speaker 1: Like I got to get to know someone before I
- 20:27Speaker 1: introduce something. So the fact that you're saying that is
- 20:29Speaker 1: like the best advice I can give to any up
- 20:32Speaker 1: and coming coach is like get or even a leader
- 20:35Speaker 1: of teammate, get to know someone first, and then once
- 20:38Speaker 1: you start talking it's it's out a love show.
- 20:41Speaker 3: The person I invested in them just as much as
- 20:43Speaker 3: they're invested in the team meeting.
- 20:46Speaker 2: He starts reading it off, is like, all right, sink in.
- 20:49Speaker 2: This guy's a straight baller, and I'm like it was like, wait,
- 20:54Speaker 2: someone would decipher this for me because he just went
- 20:57Speaker 2: over this hitter and I didn't understand the one word
- 21:00Speaker 2: what we're doing to this guy. But you catch on
- 21:02Speaker 2: and it all makes sense. It's like, right, I need
- 21:04Speaker 2: to know with it. So we went down but like
- 21:06Speaker 2: it's a it's a It was a cool process, especially
- 21:10Speaker 2: coming over here and the way we did it, and
- 21:12Speaker 2: we you and Tommy helping develop the wristband.
- 21:17Speaker 5: No one will ever know until now.
- 21:21Speaker 6: When you talked about the information, you're like, poresy, there's
- 21:25Speaker 6: a lot of information.
- 21:26Speaker 5: I said, yes, I remember most of it, but it's
- 21:30Speaker 5: hard to remember all of it.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And I said, I get it for you.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah, you had lefties, right's yeah, it's so people go
- 21:37Speaker 3: through big hooks.
- 21:39Speaker 2: What can we do? A smart guy goes what can
- 21:41Speaker 2: we do?
- 21:42Speaker 5: What everyone probably felt the way you did?
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, what our process we came up with helped me
- 21:48Speaker 2: tremendously watch.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Football game watched one football game.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Catcher ever to wear an armband with?
- 21:56Speaker 1: Is that my partner?
- 21:57Speaker 6: And we have that's right, and now it's in place,
- 22:00Speaker 6: and I don't know what people put on the arm
- 22:02Speaker 6: band we had left.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Remember I could remember lefties, and we had all the
- 22:05Speaker 2: right art we had to start and finish. And then
- 22:08Speaker 2: we had in order of importance, which was really big
- 22:11Speaker 2: because I would be in between pitches, so it would
- 22:13Speaker 2: be like fastball in or slider away in order of
- 22:18Speaker 2: what they were.
- 22:19Speaker 6: All the options are listed, but and right handed pitcher
- 22:23Speaker 6: and fast one is at the top.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Fastball over slider, slider over curveball.
- 22:28Speaker 1: So much that goes into every single pitch that we're
- 22:33Speaker 1: gonna get to it later when we talk about Game seven.
- 22:35Speaker 1: But it all rides on your life is on the
- 22:38Speaker 1: line between the lines. Obviously, it's not like.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Can be obviously in baseball, the games decided on one pitch.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Yeah, at a certain times, you know the guy not
- 22:48Speaker 2: getting a great secondary.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Exactly, and like there you go, so now you don't
- 22:52Speaker 5: you're not a whorl.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Chair and that exactly we're not sitting here. We're not
- 22:56Speaker 1: sitting here.
- 22:56Speaker 3: One one decision as a starting picture that that cost
- 23:01Speaker 3: you the game with him.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Can we tell the quick story because we want to
- 23:05Speaker 2: get into it. I just want to tell a story
- 23:06Speaker 2: about spring training, me get dress wood and going back
- 23:09Speaker 2: to back curveballs. Do you remember that?
- 23:12Speaker 5: Or you couldn't throw first strike.
- 23:13Speaker 2: And throw the first start against the Dodgers.
- 23:16Speaker 5: I miss this in baseball because you don't get this
- 23:20Speaker 5: kind of honesty.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Woody my first year there, right, what he starts in
- 23:27Speaker 2: against is this when you dropped a hit on me, and.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Which wasn't the last time either, but I would.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Rather you come scream in my face than this, so
- 23:38Speaker 3: when it hurt me worse than anything in.
- 23:40Speaker 6: A report and a scouting report against a hitter, we
- 23:44Speaker 6: know a lot of times that they're going to take
- 23:47Speaker 6: a first pitch, breaking ball, first pitch curveball on the
- 23:51Speaker 6: sheets called the dumper, get me.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Over curveball that a hitter just swallows.
- 23:57Speaker 9: So Woodi's pitcher, ROSSI calls it when he throws the
- 24:03Speaker 9: first one, it's non competitive.
- 24:11Speaker 5: Last on my ball. Hold the ball, so now hold
- 24:16Speaker 5: the ball. ROSSI calls it again.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Right, yeah, you know you think, okay, they just needed
- 24:21Speaker 2: one to get The.
- 24:22Speaker 10: Second one was worse first and Rossie catches it and
- 24:30Speaker 10: the boty that this was the poorest body language.
- 24:34Speaker 5: But I got it. It was like I understood it too,
- 24:38Speaker 5: and he throws it back. It's like, what the fuck
- 24:42Speaker 5: are you two?
- 24:43Speaker 2: What do we do? You've got eighty nine in the tank?
- 24:46Speaker 5: What are we doing?
- 24:47Speaker 3: Now?
- 24:47Speaker 5: This is the big leagues? Now where do you want
- 24:50Speaker 5: me to go?
- 24:50Speaker 2: They throw it back like this.
- 24:53Speaker 1: It was the and.
- 24:56Speaker 2: That's what I was like, thro behind that happy with
- 25:00Speaker 2: you all right?
- 25:01Speaker 5: Sorry, I had to get that love like that was
- 25:04Speaker 5: that happened throughout the year?
- 25:07Speaker 4: Is you never always nail it?
- 25:11Speaker 5: You're right Wood.
- 25:12Speaker 1: He was such a part of our culture because in
- 25:16Speaker 1: twenty sixteen was your first year going to the bullpen,
- 25:18Speaker 1: and I'm gonna give you your your run right here.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You led the league in appearances and with postseason appearances combined,
- 25:25Speaker 1: it was you led everyone in appearances, which is insane.
- 25:28Speaker 1: First year reliever Joe would go to you like he
- 25:30Speaker 1: was like you were his safety blanket first year in
- 25:33Speaker 1: the bullpen, which is insane. But your role behind the
- 25:37Speaker 1: scenes was something that I don't think we are where
- 25:40Speaker 1: we are without you because we had like four, four
- 25:44Speaker 1: or five guys on the top of my head that
- 25:46Speaker 1: were like the characters on the team Me, you Woody
- 25:51Speaker 1: in Decks and we were like the four like kind
- 25:55Speaker 1: of we fed off each other. One day I didn't
- 25:57Speaker 1: feel it, they would bring it. If one day he
- 25:59Speaker 1: wasn't feeling, would bring And then you sprinkle in Leicster,
- 26:02Speaker 1: you get him pissed off, you get Lackey pissed off, right,
- 26:05Speaker 1: Jay Hay pop in, Hobby pop in. So you'd have
- 26:08Speaker 1: all these guys. But what he was the main character
- 26:10Speaker 1: of the pictures, the bullpen of Team Bartender, Team Bartender
- 26:15Speaker 1: on the Planes, Team Bartender on rally shots introduced me
- 26:20Speaker 1: to a rally beer. First time I ever did a
- 26:23Speaker 1: rally beer was in I think twenty thirteen.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Did you hit a Homer?
- 26:28Speaker 1: You my next about we were in We were in
- 26:31Speaker 1: Rosie's Little Players office there in DC. Homer. I chugged it.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I believe it was off Craig's Stammon too, new manager
- 26:38Speaker 1: of the Poject Dead Center, and I was like, holy shit,
- 26:44Speaker 1: you couldn't always the rally bear. But I do give
- 26:47Speaker 1: what he the credit for the rally beer.
- 26:49Speaker 2: What do you were?
- 26:50Speaker 1: You were?
- 26:51Speaker 2: You were? I remember coming on the plane and he's
- 26:53Speaker 2: got his backpack full of the bar that we needed,
- 26:56Speaker 2: and he's fixing the ready drinks and he's like, I
- 26:58Speaker 2: don't get it. Rossie, I'm like, what's that. I was like,
- 27:00Speaker 2: me and John we throw a lot of the same pitches.
- 27:02Speaker 2: How was he getting one hundred and sixty million dollars? Why?
- 27:06Speaker 3: I was like, I remember, I was, I was what
- 27:10Speaker 3: I mean because I'm like, okay, yeah, this guy's I
- 27:14Speaker 3: thought I thow the same cutter, the same a little bit.
- 27:17Speaker 3: I said, Actually my curve ball at the moment, it's
- 27:18Speaker 3: a little bit better, got a better change up.
- 27:21Speaker 5: I get it.
- 27:21Speaker 3: He's six five two forty and I'm five, one hundred
- 27:24Speaker 3: and sixty. I was like, I don't understand the difference.
- 27:27Speaker 1: You can hit better, you had a better pickoff.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I was everything way better. What was
- 27:34Speaker 2: going Yeah, yeah, I mean I don't understand it.
- 27:37Speaker 1: What what was going through your head when in that
- 27:39Speaker 1: game was the versus the Mariners, when you played the
- 27:41Speaker 1: outfield and then came into pitch.
- 27:43Speaker 3: So that game so previously I had played outfield for
- 27:47Speaker 3: the first time in Cincinnati.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Yeah, he did the double.
- 27:51Speaker 3: We did the double thing, and then Trophy replaced me
- 27:53Speaker 3: in left field, but I never got a ball right, Like,
- 27:55Speaker 3: I didn't have to do nothing. And so when I
- 27:56Speaker 3: got put back out there, I.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Was like, I don't want to because power shadow I
- 28:02Speaker 2: give you that.
- 28:02Speaker 3: I would I would take I would take some of
- 28:05Speaker 3: the young outfielders and explain to them why I didn't
- 28:07Speaker 3: want them to play d yes because I would play shallow.
- 28:11Speaker 3: I would play shallow and be like, as a pitcher,
- 28:14Speaker 3: the ball that's gonna rock it off the wall or
- 28:16Speaker 3: one hop I don't need caught.
- 28:18Speaker 5: I messed up.
- 28:19Speaker 3: I threw a pitch that they could waffle. I need
- 28:21Speaker 3: the pitch that I just straight blew their bad up on.
- 28:25Speaker 3: But because you're tickling the dirt on the track, you
- 28:27Speaker 3: can't get to because you're scared of the ball. One
- 28:29Speaker 3: of it.
- 28:30Speaker 4: And I would just tell them, I'm.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Like, hey, if you just watch, there won't be one
- 28:33Speaker 3: ball I don't catch that doesn't one homp the wall
- 28:35Speaker 3: or hit the wall.
- 28:37Speaker 2: You can do it.
- 28:38Speaker 5: Got it.
- 28:39Speaker 4: When I got there the first time, I was like,
- 28:40Speaker 4: I didn't get to do nothing.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Now, granted I was hoping for like a just a
- 28:44Speaker 3: nice easy pop up, and that is the first It
- 28:50Speaker 3: was crazy because I was looking.
- 28:52Speaker 5: Back on it.
- 28:53Speaker 2: We don't take VP at nighttime.
- 28:55Speaker 4: No, that's the first ball I caught at night since
- 28:58Speaker 4: high school.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I got I had a sweatshirt where you're I've got
- 29:03Speaker 2: a sweatshirt that five hundred level whatever made with you
- 29:06Speaker 2: catching the ball in the eye and your number at
- 29:08Speaker 2: the bottom.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I love that Joe did that.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Oh, I love that.
- 29:11Speaker 11: That's why I missed like that type of manager national
- 29:18Speaker 11: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, but Joe didn't ever get scared.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Now, sometimes it works, sometimes it didn't, but he.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Was never scared. Joe was the ring leader of our circus.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Was your favorite thing about Joe?
- 29:29Speaker 4: I agree that he let me. He allowed me to
- 29:31Speaker 4: do those things.
- 29:31Speaker 3: There's powershag because and I took pride in hitting because
- 29:35Speaker 3: I didn't just want to be a picture.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I wanted to be able to help out. It's a
- 29:38Speaker 4: team any way that I could help out.
- 29:41Speaker 1: That's the redneck in Yes.
- 29:42Speaker 5: I wanted to be involved in everything.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Yeah, like even when it was at pit.
- 29:45Speaker 3: I'm a baseball player picture right, I wish I wish
- 29:48Speaker 3: I was.
- 29:48Speaker 2: I wish I could.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Started first dace anyway other games, like, I just wanted
- 29:52Speaker 3: to be involved.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we mean, how did Joe affect you. How did
- 29:56Speaker 2: Joe Joe Joe.
- 30:01Speaker 6: The way I looked at the game because I was
- 30:04Speaker 6: spoiled with the Yankees where we ran the same lineup
- 30:10Speaker 6: out for one hundred and sixty two and postseason, like
- 30:14Speaker 6: you had the best players with the best players, the
- 30:16Speaker 6: best rotation, the best bullpay, so there were no you
- 30:20Speaker 6: weren't moving pieces around.
- 30:22Speaker 5: It was, you know, no block Jeter O'Neill, you know, like.
- 30:27Speaker 6: The same nine in the same spots for ten years.
- 30:32Speaker 6: Then I get with Joe Madden and it was like, oh,
- 30:38Speaker 6: wait a minute. He likes players have played multiple positions
- 30:41Speaker 6: and moving them around and changing lineup up and and
- 30:45Speaker 6: he was kind of the ironically the pioneer of analytics.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Like yeah, he was. He had his matrix called the
- 30:52Speaker 2: Matrix Matrix.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Right, that's right.
- 30:54Speaker 5: And it's ironic because he kind of has been pushed
- 30:58Speaker 5: out yet because he is not enough of an analytics.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Analytical because now he took all the information and now
- 31:05Speaker 1: he's using his brain in his field, which is always
- 31:08Speaker 1: he always did. But at first it was like, oh,
- 31:11Speaker 1: he's too analytical. He's like no, he's just using the
- 31:14Speaker 1: information and now going with it and his experience, which.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Is experience, experience Trump experience experience and history.
- 31:22Speaker 6: Trump's is another level. So I embraced and I still
- 31:28Speaker 6: talk to our president of Baseball offs with the padres
- 31:32Speaker 6: that I work for now about you know parts that
- 31:37Speaker 6: interchangeable parts, how you can move pieces around, how how
- 31:40Speaker 6: a roster is built, And that's all because of Joe.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no explanation. The human element. I don't care
- 31:47Speaker 3: what the matrix says, what analytics say. As players, we
- 31:51Speaker 3: know everything on paper, could say you should crush this picture.
- 31:55Speaker 3: He throws everything that you hit. There is something about
- 31:58Speaker 3: him that you don't sniff. Yeah, right, Just as a pitcher,
- 32:02Speaker 3: those those guys that is one of those guys you
- 32:05Speaker 3: just can't get out, the stretch, change up, just the
- 32:07Speaker 3: straight fit. There's just guys that as pitchers that you
- 32:11Speaker 3: just can't get out. It doesn't matter what you throw them,
- 32:13Speaker 3: no matter how you throw them.
- 32:14Speaker 5: But if you think about our our team though.
- 32:18Speaker 6: In fifteen and sixteen, and I had never experienced this,
- 32:21Speaker 6: This is why I love Joe Matten among other reasons.
- 32:24Speaker 6: But you had Chris Bryant, who played third, would go
- 32:28Speaker 6: to first if he had to, would play left center, right, Okay,
- 32:33Speaker 6: you had Hobby and Addie play short.
- 32:36Speaker 5: And second like right, move move back and forth.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Defense exactly.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I played third base in sixteen.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Hey Schreber, same thing, left and left and first would
- 32:49Speaker 3: do a bunch of defenses.
- 32:51Speaker 5: Risk cat played first.
- 32:52Speaker 1: And pitched, and then you had up defenses right, yes,
- 32:57Speaker 1: right or your butt defense.
- 32:59Speaker 5: Hold on, you had zobers. You played all anywhere place
- 33:03Speaker 5: and then just center, Deck's place and j.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Hey, we're about the two only stations would go to center,
- 33:11Speaker 3: would go at center when.

- 33:28Speaker 5: that that experience, like everyone was moving around. He made players.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Enjoy.
- 33:36Speaker 5: Like Hobby I think was a was a better player.
- 33:41Speaker 5: Like moving around made it different spots. Joe made it fun.

- 33:48Speaker 3: you're getting alt on the right. Hey played left today,
- 33:51Speaker 3: You're starting left because I still need your bet and
- 33:53Speaker 3: let them. You're like, I ain't plaid left. He's like,
- 33:55Speaker 3: you'll figure it out.
- 33:56Speaker 1: You've done a few of these now, and it's like
- 33:58Speaker 1: that's the everyone had fun and it's so easy. Especially
- 34:03Speaker 1: we know when you're losing, like it's easy to lose.
- 34:06Speaker 1: It really is, because you just come in, Oh we
- 34:08Speaker 1: lost today, Oh well, what are you doing for dinner? Yeah,
- 34:11Speaker 1: when you start winning that energy, it takes. It hurts,
- 34:15Speaker 1: and then you lose. Exactly when you start winning and

- 35:53Speaker 2: when there was a series against the San.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Francisco Oh, if that's the case, I remember that series.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Yeah, we swept him in August August.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Well, I want to hear your thoughts too, like like
- 36:04Speaker 2: that's what resonated with us when we started. And then
- 36:07Speaker 2: a couple of people when we swept the Giants and
- 36:09Speaker 2: they came in and it was that audience and we
- 36:11Speaker 2: went on.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Marja had a good game, and I read the reason
- 36:14Speaker 4: why I remember this is a.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Year fifteen March Shark was gone.
- 36:19Speaker 4: No, Shark was gone.
- 36:20Speaker 5: That's right.
- 36:20Speaker 2: It was me who pitched that series.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Hammel Me Hammel Leicester probably probably, but all our remembers
- 36:27Speaker 3: we killed him. Whatever mind because I scheduled a fishing
- 36:30Speaker 3: trip after my game. I had the day game and
- 36:32Speaker 3: I had a fishing trip in the day. I'm like, well,
- 36:35Speaker 3: we need to get this one done. Will the only time,
- 36:38Speaker 3: the only time he had was like really cutting it
- 36:41Speaker 3: clothes and that's me and Willie.
- 36:45Speaker 4: Are went seven and seven and a third or something
- 36:49Speaker 4: in fifteen before good.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I had to go to the bullpen.
- 36:52Speaker 2: But so we But that's when you knew we were good.
- 36:56Speaker 4: That series.
- 36:56Speaker 3: That was that series because we I knew we had something.
- 37:00Speaker 4: But it was kind of like that.
- 37:02Speaker 3: In twelve, I was like, oh, we're gonna be good
- 37:04Speaker 3: this year. Like what everybody says, we just look good.
- 37:07Speaker 3: In spring, we lost one hundred and one. Thirteen comes around,
- 37:10Speaker 3: I'm like, hey, we got some new pieces. I was like,
- 37:12Speaker 3: we're gonna be good. Ninety nine fourteen, I was like, hey,
- 37:16Speaker 3: let me tell you this, guys. In twelve, I knew
- 37:19Speaker 3: we were gonna lose one hundred. In thirteen, I thought
- 37:23Speaker 3: we would lose one hundred. My glasses always half full,
- 37:27Speaker 3: my glasses always have fully.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Like this is this is the beauty that we get
- 37:36Speaker 1: out of, like unbelievable, this is a bad Let's let's
- 37:40Speaker 1: fast forward to we're down three to one. Oh, how
- 37:44Speaker 1: are we? We just got swept the year before, to
- 37:48Speaker 1: the a.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Team that we swept all season we were seven and
- 37:50Speaker 2: oh we get swept.
- 37:53Speaker 1: We go down three to one, and it's like fuck, right,
- 37:56Speaker 1: but what for you two? What are you in the bullpen?
- 38:00Speaker 1: Ors you're just looking on now at this point? What
- 38:03Speaker 1: what was that belief that we can actually do this?
- 38:07Speaker 4: I'll tell you the truth.
- 38:10Speaker 3: That time of years in my hunting time, I was
- 38:12Speaker 3: in the bullpen. We had a meeting and I said,
- 38:14Speaker 3: I'm gona tell you, I'm gonna tell you the god
- 38:15Speaker 3: dang truth. I said, I want to win, and I
- 38:18Speaker 3: said so I want I said, I don't want to
- 38:20Speaker 3: string the shit out if we're gonna god dang lose.
- 38:22Speaker 2: In the fifth game, sixth game, I.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Said, I'm either going home and hunting right now, or
- 38:27Speaker 3: I said, let's go fucking do this. And I said,
- 38:30Speaker 3: I don't want to I don't want to string this
- 38:32Speaker 3: along to lose. You want to go, and I'm all in,
- 38:36Speaker 3: And I said, so let's do it, and they.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Were like, let's go, and we did.
- 38:40Speaker 6: I thought I've been in, had been in a lot
- 38:44Speaker 6: of postseasons before that, even prior to the Cubs. So
- 38:51Speaker 6: to be honest, I had never seen a team, including
- 38:54Speaker 6: all my Yankee years and Dodgers, I had never seen
- 38:57Speaker 6: a team down three to one as relaxed as our team.
- 39:04Speaker 6: In my opinion, I never felt like it's over, we're done.
- 39:09Speaker 5: I never did, exactly. We never felt that to the
- 39:13Speaker 5: park for Game.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Five, hardest game of the series in my opinion, Yes,
- 39:17Speaker 1: And it was like, if we win this one, we
- 39:20Speaker 1: rolled Game six, Yeah, we got we're winning. And I
- 39:25Speaker 1: didn't feel like anyone in the room didn't believe that.
- 39:29Speaker 1: And I've been on teams that have been down and
- 39:34Speaker 1: you know it's over. You know what I mean, like
- 39:37Speaker 1: you know it's over, like you can feel it. You're like,
- 39:39Speaker 1: we're going on, it's over. We're down three one or
- 39:42Speaker 1: three zero or you know, three to.
- 39:43Speaker 5: Two, but we're done.
- 39:45Speaker 2: This one was the first time we're we got a shot.
- 39:50Speaker 5: We gotta show.
- 39:51Speaker 6: We just got to win Game five, and we did,
- 39:54Speaker 6: and then games the whole nother story personally, and then
- 39:58Speaker 6: game sex well, game six, remember again, it's not about me.
- 40:02Speaker 1: I hit the home run in the eighth and Joe
- 40:05Speaker 1: sent uh Chappy back out and the and we talked
- 40:08Speaker 1: to Joe about this. I go Joe. I never hated
- 40:11Speaker 1: all back, and that's the one thing. If I can
- 40:13Speaker 1: go back, we're not sending Chappie, no doubt, and I
- 40:16Speaker 1: think he.
- 40:16Speaker 4: Would because I closed out he did it.
- 40:19Speaker 5: He hit that homer with two outs, right yea.
- 40:21Speaker 1: And well we were in the dugout and everyone's like,
- 40:24Speaker 1: could we fucking get Woody back up? Because finished you
- 40:28Speaker 1: finished Game six. But Chappie went out for the night.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I remember that, and he was pissed because Chappie was
- 40:33Speaker 1: worse and he never complained, no, but when he came in.
- 40:36Speaker 3: He had been our horse and we had ran him
- 40:38Speaker 3: and it was. We knew we were going to Game seven,
- 40:41Speaker 3: get three outs. We need him to have rest.
- 40:43Speaker 1: We ran him hard, so we get to Game seven,
- 40:46Speaker 1: all the pregame stuff. We're in there, and you you
- 40:52Speaker 1: run with this because your bullpen experience in Game seven
- 40:55Speaker 1: was epic between Johnny Lester, you coaching Johnny Lester being
- 40:59Speaker 1: in the bullpen to you and Lackey knowing you're not pitching.
- 41:03Speaker 1: For the most part, the we.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Did end up double barreling, which was unexpected, but very
- 41:08Speaker 3: greeted with open arms because I would have loved to
- 41:10Speaker 3: got in, but no. The when you said them, so
- 41:14Speaker 3: we're down there, I knew it was Kyle.
- 41:16Speaker 4: I'll call him.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Carl Hendricks, and then I knew Johnny, and then we're
- 41:19Speaker 3: gonna piece together the rest a new Chapman probably at
- 41:22Speaker 3: some point. But they get Johnny up and he's been
- 41:27Speaker 3: in my ear all night, Like you know, I'm not
- 41:30Speaker 3: I don't normally do this.
- 41:31Speaker 4: I'm not down here, I.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Said, dude, once you get loose, I said, just play catch.
- 41:34Speaker 3: I said, you don't have to keep firing bullets. And
- 41:36Speaker 3: I said, if think it's bad enough, I'll stand in
- 41:38Speaker 3: front of you.
- 41:38Speaker 4: And I said I won't let you throw another one,
- 41:41Speaker 4: and he'd got draw humped.
- 41:42Speaker 5: Like nervous entergy.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Yeah no, now, yeah, guys, yeah, you just keep.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and so, because once you get loose, you earlier, yeah,
- 41:50Speaker 3: you know you're loose, but you're still down there, and
- 41:52Speaker 3: you're like, well, I'll make sure I'm real doubted, right,
- 41:55Speaker 3: I'll make sure I'm real doubted. Well, that's just with
- 41:57Speaker 3: your adrenaline everything. That's just wasting bullets that can be
- 42:00Speaker 3: for out there. And so, yes, At one point I
- 42:03Speaker 3: had to stand in front of John and.
- 42:04Speaker 2: He said, what the fuck are you doing?
- 42:06Speaker 3: I said, John, you're not going to throw another god
- 42:07Speaker 3: dang pitch unless.
- 42:08Speaker 5: It's out there. He said fuck.
- 42:10Speaker 3: I said, no, John, this is why you told me
- 42:11Speaker 3: to do.
- 42:11Speaker 4: I said, I'm standing here until you go sit down.
- 42:14Speaker 3: So John goes to sit down, and then so and
- 42:19Speaker 3: finally we know he's going in, like it is an
- 42:22Speaker 3: official that John's coming in.
- 42:24Speaker 4: And he goes in the half inning before.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Johnathan I went down there, yeah, yeah, but before he
- 42:29Speaker 3: goes in, he funk. He comes and sets next to
- 42:31Speaker 3: me and he says, Okay, what the fuck do I
- 42:33Speaker 3: do with Lester? And I said, I don't know, huh,
- 42:38Speaker 3: I don't understand the question. And he said, it's fucking
- 42:41Speaker 3: it's like the fifth inning?
- 42:42Speaker 5: What do I do? Like, how do I right?
- 42:45Speaker 3: And I was like and I said, I said, Russie, yeah,
- 42:48Speaker 3: And I said yeah, because we had the whole scouting
- 42:51Speaker 3: report thing that we flipped. And I said, and he
- 42:53Speaker 3: asked about scouting, press said, fuck the scouting reports.
- 42:56Speaker 2: The World Series.
- 42:57Speaker 3: I go, you you don't go in and try to
- 42:59Speaker 3: establish the fastball in the fourth and fifth right, I said,
- 43:02Speaker 3: it's kitchen sink from the get go.
- 43:04Speaker 4: If his weak spot is a cutter, you throw it.
- 43:06Speaker 4: If it's a curveball, you throw it.
- 43:07Speaker 2: If it's a change up, you throw you and you
- 43:08Speaker 2: just come guessing. Get right down there. You're talking to everybody,
- 43:11Speaker 2: get ready, trying to trying to because you're to You
- 43:13Speaker 2: go down there, and it's like, wait, I'm in a
- 43:14Speaker 2: different world, right, you bullpen than in the Dog Game.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Seven of the world greatest World Series of all time.
- 43:19Speaker 3: And as soon as I say that, you go, you're
- 43:21Speaker 3: fucking right, You're fucking right, and you just get up
- 43:22Speaker 3: and you go right when you leave, Johnny Lester comes
- 43:26Speaker 3: and replaces you, and he says, and he goes.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Hey, what the fuck do I do?
- 43:29Speaker 5: I get.
- 43:31Speaker 2: And I said, We're going to Woody for advice.
- 43:34Speaker 5: And I said what and I go, I go.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Rossie just asked me. I said, both the off bed here?
- 43:38Speaker 2: What are you doing? He's like, but not a bullman?
- 43:40Speaker 2: What do I do?
- 43:41Speaker 1: What I do?
- 43:41Speaker 2: He's like, the.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Scotter report says this, fuck the scout report.
- 43:44Speaker 4: I said, just go in, I said, and throw the
- 43:48Speaker 4: sink is now open.
- 43:49Speaker 3: Well, you just throw the sink at him if you
- 43:50Speaker 3: fill a curveball because he can't hit it. That's what
- 43:52Speaker 3: you're throwing first pitch.
- 43:53Speaker 2: I said.
- 43:54Speaker 3: It's no longer you're You're not a pussy for throwing
- 43:56Speaker 3: a curveball your first pitch of your game. You're in
- 43:57Speaker 3: the fifth innie.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Right, Yeah you get out, Yeah, you get out.
- 44:01Speaker 1: I was telling U in one of the episodes before,
- 44:04Speaker 1: I was talking about how we were the Motley Crew
- 44:06Speaker 1: and how we would just come in and funck ship
- 44:08Speaker 1: up and leave, but very respectfully, never disrespectful to the
- 44:12Speaker 1: other team. As part of the Motley Crew, you were
- 44:15Speaker 1: in what how loud up were you at that time
- 44:18Speaker 1: in the bullpen because you and Lack were you were
- 44:21Speaker 1: rallying the boys. I know you were.
- 44:24Speaker 5: This is when it was a game.
- 44:27Speaker 2: In our day.
- 44:29Speaker 5: Back it wasn't back in our day.
- 44:31Speaker 1: It was just what we did for the boys. We
- 44:33Speaker 1: did whatever it took. And if you thought having a
- 44:36Speaker 1: rally beer or taking a shot, or being a half
- 44:40Speaker 1: of Crown handled deep.
- 44:41Speaker 5: Free game right like we got to.
- 44:44Speaker 3: May or may not, it's up to speculation. May or
- 44:47Speaker 3: may not have had some beverages in the bullpen.
- 44:50Speaker 1: It just makes this story that much better, honestly, And I.
- 44:53Speaker 2: May or may not have.
- 44:55Speaker 3: I may have may or may not have dumped out
- 44:57Speaker 3: gatorade to fill it up with the mixer.
- 45:01Speaker 4: That way, it still looked legit.
- 45:04Speaker 1: So this is I mean, but this is the cast
- 45:07Speaker 1: that we want to portray in this what we're doing
- 45:09Speaker 1: this for us to paint that picture of how special
- 45:12Speaker 1: that group was. And you need it all. You've even
- 45:15Speaker 1: fast forward now like we're in the rain delay comes right,
- 45:18Speaker 1: we're talking everyone about the rain delay. Borsy for you
- 45:21Speaker 1: you were at the coaches what do he? Where are
- 45:24Speaker 1: you at? What take us through.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Yourdow We came back, We actually all came in.
- 45:28Speaker 5: I was in the meeting.
- 45:30Speaker 2: I was there, and here's your recount of the meeting.
- 45:32Speaker 3: It was just something got under j Hey and he
- 45:36Speaker 3: just he finally said, hey, you could say it.
- 45:42Speaker 4: Fuck that motherfucker.
- 45:44Speaker 5: We're doing us.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Don't care about anything that's going on. This is our
- 45:50Speaker 3: game and we're about to go out there after that
- 45:52Speaker 3: and we're going to win. He said, I don't care
- 45:55Speaker 3: what's going on from now before.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Everything is from now on is.
- 45:59Speaker 2: What we can can roll.
- 46:01Speaker 1: And it sparked us, and everyone re upped on their
- 46:03Speaker 1: pregame routine and whatever anyone did, and me.
- 46:06Speaker 3: And Lack end up double barreling and wholeheartedly. I wish
- 46:09Speaker 3: one of us would have gotten the game because it
- 46:10Speaker 3: would have been epic.
- 46:11Speaker 4: I feel like I had hit one hundred that game.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Well, dude, well I remember we fast forward.
- 46:17Speaker 4: I walked, Uh, you didn't want a curveball. I mean
- 46:22Speaker 4: we cutter, but no.
- 46:25Speaker 2: C J.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Edwards in the game. Two outs and we're like, ship,
- 46:28Speaker 1: like this is it right, We're already he walks the
- 46:30Speaker 1: guy Joe pulls them and I looked down and I'm like,
- 46:36Speaker 1: Mike Montgomery's coming in, and I love Monny.
- 46:38Speaker 5: He was great.
- 46:38Speaker 1: He was great, fir ust, he was great. Out of
- 46:40Speaker 1: the bullpen guy, I was expected.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Nobody was looking at I've heard this.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Story bars through the years now where I think you
- 46:48Speaker 1: tell the story of like everyone had done. I was like,
- 46:50Speaker 1: what the fuck? What the fuck? And Bors is the
- 46:53Speaker 1: only one there? No one you were there saying, don't worry,
- 46:57Speaker 1: spin good, we got spin, We got spin.
- 47:01Speaker 5: Right.
- 47:01Speaker 2: So Lesser actually told this story too.
- 47:05Speaker 1: This guy Michael Martinez has not taken one a bat
- 47:08Speaker 1: and he's a switch hitter. And he's a switch hitter.
- 47:10Speaker 5: You have to have the last pretty much the last
- 47:13Speaker 5: guy on.
- 47:13Speaker 1: The Indians roster, and Boresy's saying he were good. That's
- 47:17Speaker 1: how locked in exactly. Our staff was where it was
- 47:21Speaker 1: like right away, no, we got spin.
- 47:22Speaker 6: We got it because you if ever there was a
- 47:25Speaker 6: hitter you could take a short cut on, it would
- 47:27Speaker 6: be Michael Martinez, no offense.
- 47:29Speaker 5: It's like, what are the chances? Right? But you if
- 47:35Speaker 5: you treat every hitter like this guy may be up
- 47:38Speaker 5: when the game's on the line.
- 47:40Speaker 6: And so it happened that way, And it was many
- 47:44Speaker 6: running in and I'm like, okay, we're good, and here
- 47:50Speaker 6: comes Mani and John Lester and Schwarber run up.
- 47:54Speaker 5: And go what do we got?
- 47:56Speaker 2: What do we got, I go, we got curveball, we
- 47:59Speaker 2: got curveball, and they.
- 48:00Speaker 5: Go, we got and then and then Niggie is in
- 48:07Speaker 5: the game.
- 48:08Speaker 6: I don't even know how many deep he is, so
- 48:11Speaker 6: he's catching, and I know he doesn't know Michael Martinez
- 48:14Speaker 6: hitting right handed, right. So he looks at me as
- 48:18Speaker 6: he's walking back and he and he's looking, he's staring.
- 48:21Speaker 2: I go, and he goes, yeah, it's like he knew it.
- 48:29Speaker 6: He's like, that's what I was thinking to Michael first pitch.
- 48:34Speaker 6: And that's why you got to give Mike Montgomery.
- 48:37Speaker 5: How much credit do you have to give that? Yeah,
- 48:40Speaker 5: you in the fucking land of that curveball circle right,
- 48:46Speaker 5: bringing it back.
- 48:49Speaker 6: Nails and Niggie catches it, boom strike and he looks
- 48:54Speaker 6: over at me and I go again again.
- 48:57Speaker 5: And there it was, And that was it.
- 48:59Speaker 6: But you're right, it was because we were prepared. And
- 49:03Speaker 6: if you whether you win or lose, as long as
- 49:05Speaker 6: you're prepared, you can sleep at night.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the whole thing.
- 49:10Speaker 6: Whether it's it's Jason Kipness who's their best hitter, or
- 49:14Speaker 6: Carlos Santana or Michael Martinez, you like, you know.
- 49:18Speaker 3: You're prepared Montgomery coming in and you looking like we
- 49:21Speaker 3: got spin right, and he throws two heaters and we
- 49:24Speaker 3: get beat your you're angry, Killings, You're angry.
- 49:27Speaker 5: You're angry.
- 49:30Speaker 1: That way. It's right. The fact that the fact that
- 49:32Speaker 1: Miggy looks back is because of the respect that we
- 49:35Speaker 1: all had for one another.
- 49:36Speaker 2: He was locked in that.
- 49:37Speaker 1: It wasn't individuals playing.
- 49:39Speaker 3: That was the best thing about that team is that
- 49:41Speaker 3: everybody trusted everybody and everybody had everybody's back.
- 49:44Speaker 4: There was no blame on that team.
- 49:47Speaker 2: There are not a lot of teams.
- 49:49Speaker 1: That's why the celebration was so. There was no bank
- 49:52Speaker 1: because we did it together. It was like a two
- 49:55Speaker 1: year run, and when we won, it was like that
- 49:58Speaker 1: nobody half.
- 49:59Speaker 2: Asked it couldn't like.
- 50:02Speaker 4: Couldn't every game from the start of spring training.
- 50:04Speaker 3: You couldn't blame any who cares if a guy made
- 50:07Speaker 3: an error, it wasn't from lack of effort, right. He
- 50:11Speaker 3: gave it as all on that play, So even as
- 50:13Speaker 3: a picture you can be like he related and didn't
- 50:17Speaker 3: know he gave it everything. It just wasn't meant to
- 50:19Speaker 3: happen on that play.
- 50:20Speaker 5: The other thing that why why you talk about how
- 50:24Speaker 5: how loose.
- 50:25Speaker 6: This team was even behind. When we get to game seven,
- 50:29Speaker 6: I'm sure people have spoken about this. You're doing the
- 50:31Speaker 6: rocky thing, running around naked in the clubhouse.
- 50:34Speaker 4: And it was like, I'm sorry, we didn't hear that
- 50:36Speaker 4: running around.
- 50:36Speaker 6: What this is my first time being a part of it,
- 50:44Speaker 6: talking about it and how important stuff like that is
- 50:48Speaker 6: chemist stressful moments and the fact that you're not overly
- 50:54Speaker 6: stressed as a premier player, that you're doing this is
- 50:59Speaker 6: what makes everyone else relaxed, right, And I.
- 51:02Speaker 5: Thought, wow, that is huge, Like we're still having fun.
- 51:06Speaker 2: And it was talking about that, Joe talked about not
- 51:09Speaker 2: changing anything. We didn't change right, right, And I think
- 51:16Speaker 2: going back to what Riza said a million times, every
- 51:19Speaker 2: piece of this puzzle has been so important, and like
- 51:21Speaker 2: you go back and talk. We tell these stories about
- 51:24Speaker 2: the impact that each person has had and us winning
- 51:28Speaker 2: the World series, and you know, we some guys had
- 51:32Speaker 2: bigger roles than others. It's it's it's amazing to us
- 51:36Speaker 2: and it's great for us to be able to do
- 51:37Speaker 2: this and tell these stories.
- 51:38Speaker 1: So there's no role. It was every literally everyone, I said,
- 51:41Speaker 1: every every episode. Everyone took all nine of us. It
- 51:45Speaker 1: took every win. The m v P. H Lester finished
- 51:48Speaker 1: second in the Ion that year. I think Hendricks was third. Yeah, Hendrick,
- 51:52Speaker 1: you know I was fourthing the MVP that are not
- 51:53Speaker 1: about me, uh or all that we trade for the
- 51:57Speaker 1: best closer there is chain.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Right, yeah, you know went all run off that We
- 52:02Speaker 2: talked about that. Right.
- 52:03Speaker 3: When did we bring in an All Star break other
- 52:05Speaker 3: than Chappie because Sheffie w wasn't there to start, right?
- 52:08Speaker 3: We got him at All Star Break, correct, We got
- 52:09Speaker 3: him at the Labor Torres, right, labor.
- 52:15Speaker 1: I told you I love labor because I'm like labor
- 52:16Speaker 1: without you should get a ring.
- 52:19Speaker 5: That was a Chappie brought.
- 52:22Speaker 2: I feel like we're doing that the labors. Now we
- 52:27Speaker 2: brought hogging back.
- 52:28Speaker 4: We brought them back. Yeah, we did bring coming.
- 52:30Speaker 1: So after we went on, before we end, I want
- 52:33Speaker 1: to tell the story of the parade. So you guys
- 52:35Speaker 1: are on the same float. What he's in there with
- 52:37Speaker 1: his beer vest on. Uh, we're all getting absolutely.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Shirt off, by the way, shirts always off before we
- 52:43Speaker 2: even start the surprise. You wore this for the for
- 52:46Speaker 2: the episode tomorrow not tomorrow, just wait.
- 52:51Speaker 4: But before we even got started on.
- 52:54Speaker 3: The purpose, that's what I'm saying, that's why the story
- 52:57Speaker 3: gets decapitated by our cable.
- 52:59Speaker 2: So we're in the double deck almost ripped my nose off.
- 53:02Speaker 2: We're in the double deck buses.
- 53:04Speaker 3: We had to grab your legs because you know, anyone
- 53:06Speaker 3: knows this.
- 53:06Speaker 1: They don't know how to celebrate parades here. They've never
- 53:09Speaker 1: done it. No, okay, So we were the guinea pigs.
- 53:13Speaker 1: So we have like this guy on the bus is like, oh,
- 53:15Speaker 1: no alcohol, and they said, okay, get the fuck out
- 53:17Speaker 1: of here.
- 53:17Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:18Speaker 1: So I'm the second to last bus. They're the last bus.
- 53:21Speaker 1: You lay last year, last there, and our guy on
- 53:26Speaker 1: the bus is like, hey, when you're going, you got
- 53:29Speaker 1: a duck Like we're in Wrigleyville, Like there's there's low
- 53:31Speaker 1: lan hanging power lines, didn't lights. So I turn around
- 53:36Speaker 1: and these dudes are fucking bangs up Ross's. They clipped
- 53:41Speaker 1: a power line. I'm I'm no joking dead.
- 53:46Speaker 3: That We walked across and my head off, John's head off.
- 53:50Speaker 2: Lammerman was holding filming. There's a cameraman holding filming us
- 53:53Speaker 2: like and it hit him. It hit him in his
- 53:57Speaker 2: camera and he tried to hold him the camera and
- 53:59Speaker 2: then pulled the camera down and it whip whipped and
- 54:01Speaker 2: just went. There'll be a statue out there right now
- 54:06Speaker 2: if it hits me, Harry carry down or David Roth
- 54:15Speaker 2: went the World Series carried off, he went out on top. Well, anyways,
- 54:22Speaker 2: thank you guys, you got.
- 54:25Speaker 1: The team is not special without you. You guys are
- 54:28Speaker 1: such a core part of that team. And I'm so
- 54:31Speaker 1: happy that we were able to talk about this time.
- 54:32Speaker 6: We've got a party to get to like this his brothers,
- 54:35Speaker 6: and you're right, it feels like we could have done
- 54:38Speaker 6: this for another two.
- 54:40Speaker 5: It feels like yesterday on the story Thomas.
- 54:43Speaker 4: Pasted just sitting here talking.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's all it's all just reliving these fun
- 54:46Speaker 2: moments and we've I've gotten chills and hopefully like just
- 54:49Speaker 2: telling them when and hopefully everyone.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Get a glimpse of how truly special when we say
- 54:53Speaker 1: how special this team was, hopefully throughout this entire series.
- 54:57Speaker 3: I had never been on one before, and I never
- 54:59Speaker 3: was on one after that.
- 55:00Speaker 2: It was the same.
- 55:00Speaker 6: And I can't believe that it's been taken years, right,
- 55:04Speaker 6: and remember the stories like they happened, Yes.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Yell them all night.
- 55:10Speaker 3: What I was shocked about it is ten years, you know,
- 55:11Speaker 3: normally come back and people look different and somebody's got
- 55:15Speaker 3: everybody still looks.
- 55:16Speaker 2: Like a new thing. Right. You've seen Addie and he
- 55:18Speaker 2: looks like he gets still, So you're saying we could
- 55:20Speaker 2: get the group.
- 55:25Speaker 3: It's ages Agentine.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Let's go around Union Podcast.
- 55:34Speaker 2: I love you guys.
- 55:35Speaker 4: We're kind of like trappic to that. Yeah, they got
- 55:38Speaker 4: words stuck.
