Speaker 6: Tony Vitale, our text, 304-935-500. Welcome to the show now,
• 2:22
Speaker 6: our good friend Millie Snyder. And she's got friends with her.
• 2:25
Speaker 6: She's got an entourage today, Fred Albert, Carmela Crawford, are
• 2:29
Speaker 6: with me in the Jericho Trucks studio as well. Fred,
• 2:32
Speaker 6: of course, you know Fred, former head of the American
• 2:34
Speaker 6: Federation for Teachers Before Retiring. Carmela, I think you're new here,
• 2:37
Speaker 6: so welcome aboard to you. Thanks for being here. Millie,
• 2:42
Speaker 6: why have you brought these folks to my studio today?
• 2:44
  Speaker 7: They followed me.
• 2:44
  Speaker 6: Okay, all right.
• 2:46
Speaker 7: Well, of course, to share with you that both of
• 2:51
Speaker 7: my guests are also active participants on the Mediterranean Mindset Program.
• 2:57
Speaker 7: And Carla, Carla, your name is Carmela, actually has benefited
• 3:04
Speaker 7: from eating the Mediterranean lifestyle because she is someone who
• 3:09
Speaker 7: has Parkinson's. Okay. And Parkinson's does best when it is
• 3:15
Speaker 7: nourished by eating the Mediterranean lifestyle, which simply means fresh,
• 3:20
Speaker 7: clean foods. And we have learned through... the testing process,
• 3:27
Speaker 7: that when you eat healthy foods, you can control some
• 3:31
Speaker 7: of the advancing stages of Parkinson's. But I think it's
• 3:34
Speaker 7: best that Carmela talk about that.
• 3:36
Speaker 6: I agree. All right, Carmela, what made you decide to
• 3:39
Speaker 6: want to pursue the Mediterranean lifestyle as far as the
• 3:42
  Speaker 6: eating goes?
• 3:43
Speaker 8: Well, when I first was diagnosed, I looked for a
• 3:47
Speaker 8: support group in Charleston, which I found. And exercise is
• 3:51
Speaker 8: the only thing that will actually slow the progression down.
• 3:54
Speaker 8: So I started taking rock-steady boxing classes.
• 3:59
  Speaker 9: Really?
• 3:59
Speaker 8: Yes, I love it. It's really great to hit those bags.
• 4:04
Speaker 6: To get out a lot of aggression that way, right?
• 4:05
Speaker 8: Yes. But then I thought I needed to find out
• 4:09
Speaker 8: how I should be eating or what types of food.
• 4:12
Speaker 8: would help benefit me with the Parkinson's. So everywhere I
• 4:16
Speaker 8: looked online, I kept finding the Mediterranean diet. And I
• 4:22
Speaker 8: knew Millie from years past, and that's when I called
• 4:26
Speaker 8: her up. I knew she was doing the Mediterranean diet,
• 4:28
Speaker 8: and I decided that's for me.
• 4:31
  Speaker 6: And Fran?
• 4:32
Speaker 2: Well, as Millie said, we follow her. I have followed
• 4:37
Speaker 2: Millie for many years. I used to be a... participant
• 4:41
Speaker 2: in the Weight Watchers program. And of course, Millie Snyder
• 4:45
Speaker 2: is well known in this area for her many years
• 4:47
Speaker 2: with Weight Watchers. But she also owned the Shape Shop.
• 4:51
Speaker 2: And I was a frequent flyer there. I had lunch
• 4:56
Speaker 2: there many days. And Millie and I got into conversation
• 4:59
Speaker 2: one day about the Mediterranean lifestyle. And it intrigued me.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: So I said, I think I'm going to give that
• 5:05
Speaker 2: a try. And that was about three years ago. So
• 5:10
Speaker 2: I've done this now for three years, and it has
• 5:12
Speaker 2: helped me. Not that I want to lose a lot
• 5:15
Speaker 2: of weight. I mean, that's fine. But that's not my
• 5:18
Speaker 2: primary reason. I just want to eat healthy food. I
• 5:21
Speaker 2: want to be healthier. And I have a testimony here, actually,
• 5:25
Speaker 2: from my brother. He was very ill in the hospital
• 5:30
Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, my younger brother. And we've
• 5:33
Speaker 2: been talking back and forth about the Mediterranean lifestyle. So
• 5:37
Speaker 2: he He sent me this text the other day. I
• 5:40
Speaker 2: think it's very timely. He says, I maintain a Mediterranean lifestyle.
• 5:43
Speaker 2: It makes a huge difference. He gave me his weight.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: He says, I have more energy than an 18-year-old. I'm agile,
• 5:51
Speaker 2: ride my Harley. I have good cognitive health. I work
• 5:54
Speaker 2: at least 10 hours a day, and I might say
• 5:56
Speaker 2: he's 70 years old. It's what we are supposed to eat.
• 6:01
Speaker 2: Everything else has a level of toxicity. that will age
• 6:05
Speaker 2: a person prematurely. So I think he says it best
• 6:08
Speaker 2: in his little text to me.
• 6:10
Speaker 6: What are some of the favorite things on your menu?
• 6:12
  Speaker 6: Because I know you're a foodie because I follow you
• 6:14
Speaker 6: on social media and you post on almost as many
• 6:17
Speaker 6: pictures of food as I do. But what is it
• 6:19
Speaker 6: that you most enjoy as far as the actual food scale?
• 6:23
Speaker 2: I enjoy not having to weigh or measure or worry
• 6:26
Speaker 2: about calories for one thing. But some of the, I
• 6:29
Speaker 2: love vegetables. I mean, and there's, So there are so
• 6:33
Speaker 2: many vegetables to cook and eat. I grow, of course,
• 6:36
Speaker 2: some of my own vegetables in my raised beds, and
• 6:38
Speaker 2: I can use those throughout the summer. Salmon is probably
• 6:42
Speaker 2: my favorite meal. I had that last night, and I
• 6:45
Speaker 2: posted a picture. By the way, I cooked that in
• 6:48
Speaker 2: the air fryer and was quite proud of myself. I
• 6:51
Speaker 2: had salmon and a sweet potato with a little bit
• 6:54
Speaker 2: of olive oil on top. and some steamed broccoli, and
• 6:57
Speaker 2: I was very, very satisfied. You should have invited us
• 7:00
  Speaker 2: to dinner.
• 7:00
  Speaker 5: Yeah, really.
• 7:01
Speaker 6: I should have. I mean, the pictures are nice, dude,
• 7:03
Speaker 6: but come on. All right, Carmela, what are some of
• 7:06
  Speaker 6: your favorite things?
• 7:07
Speaker 8: Well, I'd have to agree. Vegetables, you can have any kind,
• 7:11
Speaker 8: and I love them roasted. I will roast mine in
• 7:13
Speaker 8: the oven. And I, too, like salmon and fish, but fruits,
• 7:19
Speaker 8: I love being able to have all the fruits that
• 7:21
  Speaker 8: I want.
• 7:22
Speaker 6: Millie, I know you hear stories like this all the time,
• 7:24
Speaker 6: and I appreciate you bringing these folks, very well-respected members
• 7:27
Speaker 6: of the community in here to kind of talk about,
• 7:29
Speaker 6: you know, their experience, because you and I talk about
• 7:30
Speaker 6: it every month, but it's nice to hear some, and Fred,
• 7:33
Speaker 6: appreciate the testimony from your brother there, but you hear
• 7:36
Speaker 6: these stories all the time, Millie.
• 7:37
Speaker 7: Yes, and hearing these stories and actually seeing how people
• 7:42
Speaker 7: have done with it is not only gratifying to me,
• 7:46
Speaker 7: but it is more so gratifying in their own individual lives. Yes,
• 7:51
Speaker 7: I was certainly proud to be the representative, the franchisee
• 7:55
Speaker 7: for Weight Watchers, but when that part of my life
• 7:58
Speaker 7: was over, I couldn't do anything in the industry for
• 8:01
Speaker 7: three years, and I missed my group, and I missed
• 8:05
Speaker 7: being not in charge, but the person who kind of
• 8:10
Speaker 7: guided people, and I said to a friend of mine
• 8:12
Speaker 7: who was a nutritionist, I said, I just want to
• 8:16
Speaker 7: get back to it. She says, Millie, before you do anything,
• 8:19
Speaker 7: put yourself on the Mediterranean lifestyle, and Then we'll talk.
• 8:24
Speaker 7: And I bought myself a book. I did it at
• 8:27
Speaker 7: home for five weeks. And I can tell you honestly,
• 8:30
Speaker 7: I have never looked back. And it is an incredible
• 8:33
Speaker 7: way to eat. And I have learned more. And I
• 8:37
Speaker 7: believe Carmela and Fred have already testified to that fact.
• 8:41
  Speaker 6: But I have.
• 8:42
Speaker 7: Learned more than I ever learned on Weight Watchers. Weight
• 8:46
Speaker 7: Watchers offered group support, and that was very important. And
• 8:50
Speaker 7: it made a big difference, not only in my life,
• 8:52
Speaker 7: but in thousands of lives across the state. But there's
• 8:56
Speaker 7: something better about Mediterranean. And Mediterranean is old. It's been
• 9:01
Speaker 7: around for centuries. And the name of the company that
• 9:05
Speaker 7: supports it is in Boston. And their name is Old Ways.
• 9:09
Speaker 7: And they brought it to this country in 1993. And
• 9:11
Speaker 7: it makes a huge difference. in the way you eat food.
• 9:18
Speaker 7: And I eat better than I've ever eaten.
• 9:20
  Speaker 6: And I think to Fred's point, I mean, it's one
• 9:22
Speaker 6: thing to lose weight, and everybody would like to get
• 9:26
Speaker 6: a certain weight that they'd like to be at. But
• 9:27
Speaker 6: this is about a whole lot more than losing weight.
• 9:30
Speaker 6: As Fred said, he wasn't trying to lose weight. He
• 9:32
Speaker 6: was just trying to appear healthier and to feel healthier.
• 9:37
Speaker 6: And this is not a weight loss thing necessarily.
• 9:41
Speaker 7: You can lose weight, but that's not the main driving force.
• 9:44
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 9:45
Speaker 6: It's to be healthy.
• 9:46
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 9:47
Speaker 6: And you mentioned that you have Parkinson's. If you don't
• 9:50
Speaker 6: mind my asking, how long ago was your diagnosis?
• 9:53
  Speaker 8: Two years ago.
• 9:54
  Speaker 2: Two years ago.
• 9:55
Speaker 6: What's daily life? I mean, do you suffer with it?
• 9:58
Speaker 6: I mean, everybody suffers with extent. Or, I mean, you're
• 10:02
Speaker 6: moving around, you look pretty healthy to me, and I've
• 10:04
Speaker 6: known people that had Parkinson's for decades and seem to
• 10:06
Speaker 6: do well. What's your story like, if you don't mind sharing.
• 10:08
Speaker 8: It with us? Well, I can remember sitting in the
• 10:12
Speaker 8: doctor's office, and he said, you have Parkinson's. And I
• 10:16
Speaker 8: just kind of stared at him because... The only ones
• 10:19
Speaker 8: I knew had been in the late stage of Parkinson's.
• 10:23
Speaker 8: And he said, don't worry. He said, yours is the
• 10:26
  Speaker 8: good Parkinson's.
• 10:27
  Speaker 6: I said, oh, there's a good Parkinson's. Nice to know.
• 10:31
Speaker 8: But mine is a slow-progressing Parkinson's. Yes, there are things
• 10:37
Speaker 8: that go on. If you look on the outside, some
• 10:41
Speaker 8: of us have tremors, which I definitely do, but I'm
• 10:44
Speaker 8: not taking anything right now. I'm trying the exercise and
• 10:48
Speaker 8: the diet. So other than that, you don't see what's
• 10:53
Speaker 8: going on inside. There are a lot of things that
• 10:55
Speaker 8: go on inside that people don't realize.
• 10:58
Speaker 6: Now, there's like a walk coming up, a gathering.
• 11:01
Speaker 8: Yes, we are going to have a walk this Saturday,
• 11:04
Speaker 8: the 19th, at Oaks Field. So it starts at 9 o'clock.
• 11:11
Speaker 8: If you have not registered, you can come. and still
• 11:14
Speaker 8: register for the walk. It's not going to be timed.
• 11:17
Speaker 8: It's not a race. We just want to gather together,
• 11:20
Speaker 8: to be together, and support Parkinson's for the Charleston area.
• 11:25
Speaker 6: How important is the support aspect of it with this?
• 11:29
  Speaker 8: I'm sorry?
• 11:30
Speaker 6: How important is the support aspect of it, of talking
• 11:34
Speaker 6: to people that know what you're going through?
• 11:37
Speaker 8: It has been a life changer. I mean, being able
• 11:40
Speaker 8: to go to the classes, with people who have Parkinson's,
• 11:45
Speaker 8: to be able to talk to them about what they're
• 11:47
Speaker 8: going through or what you're going through. We share any
• 11:51
Speaker 8: information we find that's coming out that's new for Parkinson's patients.
• 11:57
Speaker 8: And just the laughter and the social part of it
• 12:00
Speaker 8: is wonderful. I couldn't ask for a better group.
• 12:04
Speaker 6: And it kind of goes back to what you're always saying, Millie,
• 12:06
Speaker 6: about the classes that you have, the support system that
• 12:10
Speaker 6: you have with the Mediterranean Lifestyles.
• 12:13
Speaker 7: And support is actually something that's very, very difficult to
• 12:18
Speaker 7: identify because it covers so many different aspects of our
• 12:23
Speaker 7: daily life. And when you know that there's a group
• 12:25
Speaker 7: where other people are dealing in part and to other
• 12:29
Speaker 7: extremes with what you are facing, you feel better about yourself.
• 12:34
Speaker 7: And group support for so many different maladies Makes a
• 12:38
  Speaker 7: huge difference.
• 12:39
Speaker 6: Where can people learn more about the Walk on Saturdays?
• 12:42
Speaker 6: Is it a Facebook page or website or anything?
• 12:45
Speaker 8: It's the Charleston. I see. Now I'm lost. It's the Charleston.
• 12:52
Speaker 8: parkinson's support group okay all right that's what they would
• 12:55
Speaker 8: so there's information on there about the about the event
• 12:57
Speaker 8: on saturday yes all right millie remind people about your classes.
• 13:01
Speaker 7: My our class is at on the american job course
• 13:04
Speaker 7: center it's on leon sullivan way it's very easy to
• 13:07
Speaker 7: find it's the building that has three four columns in
• 13:10
Speaker 7: the front ample parking and you enter through the front
• 13:13
Speaker 7: door and then they'll share where our meeting is we
• 13:16
Speaker 7: meet in the huddle room at the american job course
• 13:19
Speaker 7: under thursday morning at 9 30 You're welcome to come.
• 13:23
Speaker 7: Small fees apply, and it's just great to have as
• 13:27
Speaker 7: many people as possible learn the Mediterranean way of life.
• 13:30
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 13:30
Speaker 6: I've got a text here for you, Millie.
• 13:32
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 13:32
Speaker 6: It says, have you considered meeting with the heads of
• 13:34
Speaker 6: our local hospitals to possibly work out a menu or
• 13:37
Speaker 6: tutorial for their cooks in their kitchens to have a
• 13:40
Speaker 6: Mediterranean diet in the hospitals for their patients?
• 13:42
Speaker 7: I'm so glad you said that because I am in
• 13:45
Speaker 7: early discussions with West Virginia WVU, a And yes, that's
• 13:54
Speaker 7: one of the things that we're going to be embracing.
• 13:56
Speaker 7: So the more people that we can reach, the better
• 14:00
Speaker 7: we're going to be. And as Carmela said, we did
• 14:03
Speaker 7: a TV program a few weeks ago. She said, you know,
• 14:06
Speaker 7: you should go on the Mediterranean lifestyle, even though you
• 14:09
Speaker 7: don't have Parkinson's. Go on it for good health, not
• 14:12
Speaker 7: because you have a specific problem.
• 14:16
Speaker 8: Because it's good for you. All kinds of conditions.
• 14:19
Speaker 6: Yeah, it is. And a lot of preventative maintenance, too,
• 14:21
Speaker 6: like they talk about on a car. Fred, it's always
• 14:25
Speaker 6: a pleasure to see you, my friend. How's retirement treating you?
• 14:28
  Speaker 2: Thank you, Dave.
• 14:29
  Speaker 6: I mean, you're busy, I know.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: I'd like to be back in the classroom, to be
• 14:33
  Speaker 2: honest with you.
• 14:34
  Speaker 6: Are you insane?
• 14:36
Speaker 2: I must be, but I miss it. I miss teaching.
• 14:39
Speaker 2: I miss the students.
• 14:40
  Speaker 6: Well, you're a fantastic teacher. I mean, anytime when I
• 14:42
Speaker 6: used to have you on the show, we'd get texts
• 14:44
Speaker 6: here from people. He was my so-and-so teacher. And what
• 14:46
Speaker 6: did you teach? You taught math.
• 14:47
Speaker 2: I taught sixth grade math.
• 14:48
  Speaker 6: Sixth grade math.
• 14:49
  Speaker 2: Middle school.
• 14:50
Speaker 6: Okay. And you should go back.
• 14:53
Speaker 11: Did you teach algebra?
• 14:55
Speaker 2: I taught algebra early.
• 14:56
Speaker 7: Because I needed you in the ninth grade.
• 14:58
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 14:58
  Speaker 12: Yeah.
• 14:59
Speaker 2: Geometry was my favorite subject.
• 15:01
Speaker 6: Oh, yeah. You are insane.
• 15:03
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 15:04
Speaker 6: Brad Albert, I appreciate you being here.
• 15:05
  Speaker 9: Thank you.
• 15:05
Speaker 6: Millie Snyder, always a pleasure. Carmela, nice to meet you.
• 15:07
Speaker 6: Good luck with everything. The walk is at Oaks Field
• 15:09
  Speaker 6: on Saturday.
• 15:11
  Speaker 12: Right.
• 15:11
  Speaker 8: 9 a.m.
• 15:11
  Speaker 5: 9 a.m.
• 15:12
Speaker 6: Appreciate you all being here. Thanks a lot. Thank you, Dave. 922,
• 15:16

Speaker 6: the show. Good morning. How are you doing today? Doing fine.
• 17:32
Speaker 6: You've got to follow up Millie Snyder and that crew.
• 17:33
  Speaker 6: That's a tough... That's a tough road to hoe.
• 17:35
Speaker 12: Yeah, she came out and she said, don't be fooled
• 17:38
Speaker 12: by this cane. I said, okay, watch out now.
• 17:41
Speaker 6: She will be, Millie, and she told me this off
• 17:44
Speaker 6: the air, next month she'll be 84 years old. Oh,
• 17:47
Speaker 6: that's a blessing. And she is still going strong. And
• 17:50
Speaker 6: she could still whip both of us. I'm just letting
• 17:52
  Speaker 6: you know.
• 17:52
Speaker 1: She said, don't be fooled.
• 17:53
Speaker 6: So, hey, I stepped out of the way real quickly.
• 17:56
Speaker 6: Way to do it, buddy. All right, so you have
• 17:58
Speaker 6: an event coming up Thursday on campus, wrapping up the
• 18:00
Speaker 6: State of Tomorrow capital campaign. Explain to us what this
• 18:03
Speaker 6: campaign was all about.
• 18:05
  Speaker 1: Absolutely.
• 18:05
Speaker 12: So thank you for having us on the show today
• 18:08
Speaker 12: and always for your support of West Virginia State University
• 18:11
Speaker 12: and really for the State of Tomorrow capital campaign. This
• 18:16
Speaker 12: was a vision that President Cage had for us to
• 18:19
Speaker 12: come out and position West Virginia State University for long-term success.
• 18:24
Speaker 12: And we knew that having a capital campaign and having
• 18:27
Speaker 12: a fundraising initiative that will excite the community, uplift our mission,
• 18:32
Speaker 12: and then extend into the future will allow us to
• 18:36
Speaker 12: have longevity and continue to have education here at West
• 18:39
Speaker 12: Virginia State University. So what we done was we did
• 18:42
Speaker 12: a feasibility study. We figured out how many donors could give,
• 18:46
Speaker 12: their capacity, and then we went to a stretch. So
• 18:50
Speaker 12: back in early 2023, we did this feasibility study and
• 18:55
Speaker 12: we figured out that, hey, let's go for $ 25 million
• 18:57
Speaker 12: capital campaign over five years. Now, this is the second
• 19:01
Speaker 12: capital campaign ever in the school's history. The school's been
• 19:05
Speaker 12: here for 135 years, and this is the second capital
• 19:08
Speaker 12: campaign ever. First capital campaign was successful, raised a little
• 19:11
Speaker 12: over $ 18 million, and now we were in this endeavor
• 19:15
Speaker 12: and said, hey, let's raise $ 25 million. And one of
• 19:18
Speaker 12: those things is three components, is elevate, strengthen, and sustain.
• 19:22
Speaker 12: We want to elevate programs continue to increase our scholarships
• 19:26
Speaker 12: for creating opportunities for our students, support our faculty. We
• 19:31
Speaker 12: wanted to strengthen our facilities. And that was one of
• 19:34
Speaker 12: them in the School of Agriculture that we're bringing online,
• 19:36
Speaker 12: the Purdue School of Agriculture. And then also to sustain.
• 19:40
Speaker 12: We can't have a capital campaign unless we feel like
• 19:43
Speaker 12: we can sustain the institution. And that is one of
• 19:46
Speaker 12: the things that we went and embarked upon. And we
• 19:48
Speaker 12: had a great, great success. in this capital campaign. And
• 19:52
Speaker 12: in the capital campaign, it was, again, I say it
• 19:54
Speaker 12: was five years. We were able to complete and surpass
• 19:58
Speaker 12: our goal of $ 25 million in a little over two
• 20:00
Speaker 12: and a half years.
• 20:01
Speaker 6: That's amazing. So I'm sitting here today.
• 20:03
Speaker 12: We were probably at the three-year mark where we can
• 20:06
Speaker 12: finally celebrate and get everyone on campus. And we were
• 20:10
Speaker 12: able to raise a little over $ 26 million in two
• 20:15
Speaker 12: and a half years. And I just want to say,
• 20:18
Speaker 12: appreciate all our donors, the community members that believed in
• 20:22
Speaker 12: the mission of West Virginia State University, believed in our
• 20:24
Speaker 12: students and their future. But then always collectively believing in
• 20:28
Speaker 12: this region, in this area, because if we impact the
• 20:32
Speaker 12: students of now, they will be leaders of tomorrow. So
• 20:35
Speaker 12: I feel like this was a, teamwork. And we had
• 20:39
Speaker 12: great leadership. We had Tom Haywood and Mr. Ed Gotch
• 20:43
Speaker 12: as our capital campaign co-chairs and many members of the
• 20:45
Speaker 12: community in our campaign executive committee. And who says no
• 20:49
Speaker 12: to Tom Haywood and Ed Gotch?
• 20:51
  Speaker 9: Nobody.
• 20:51
  Speaker 6: Not many people.
• 20:52
  Speaker 14: I know.
• 20:52
Speaker 12: I mean, everyone knows those two. So that was a
• 20:56
Speaker 12: very big win for the institution. And we look forward
• 20:58
Speaker 12: to deploying those funds and seeing that impact across our
• 21:01
Speaker 12: campus for years to come.
• 21:03
Speaker 6: Talk about, were you surprised? I mean, I know you
• 21:06
Speaker 6: set out with a goal and you knew you're going
• 21:08
Speaker 6: to achieve it, but were you surprised by the short
• 21:13
Speaker 6: amount of time or shorter amount of time that it
• 21:15
Speaker 6: took to achieve where you wanted to be?
• 21:16
Speaker 1: Well, Dave, I will tell you this.
• 21:18
Speaker 12: When we went through this campaign feasibility study and we
• 21:22
Speaker 12: had a national well-known campaign consultant in CCS fundraising, they're
• 21:28
Speaker 12: known to help bigger institutions and middle-sized institutions. So it's
• 21:33
Speaker 12: one of those that we really felt that we had
• 21:35
Speaker 12: the right direction of having those consultants. And they really
• 21:40
Speaker 12: believed in our small institution, you know, vision and where
• 21:44
  Speaker 12: we were going.
• 21:44
Speaker 6: So they really took us underneath their wings.
• 21:46
Speaker 12: And when they initially told us the feasibility number, I
• 21:50
Speaker 12: believe it was $ 20 million, right? And President Cage being
• 21:54
Speaker 12: President Cage, he always wanted to go a little higher.
• 21:56
  Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
• 21:56
Speaker 12: And we had a meeting and President Cage said, well,
• 21:59
Speaker 12: why don't we go for $ 25 million? I looked at
• 22:01
Speaker 12: President Cage. He looked at me. I said, you don't
• 22:05
Speaker 12: know that database. And really, he said, hey, let's shoot
• 22:10
Speaker 12: for the stars. And then when we continue to meet
• 22:13
Speaker 12: with our donors, share our vision, share our story, connect
• 22:18
Speaker 12: their passion with our purpose to create possibilities, that's when
• 22:22
Speaker 12: we figured out, hey, we can really do this. And
• 22:25
Speaker 12: when we saw that We had our highest fundraising year
• 22:29
  Speaker 12: ever back in FY25. We're raising a little over $ 11. 6 million.
• 22:34
Speaker 12: That's when it really sparked and said, hey, we can
• 22:36
Speaker 12: get this done. And we was laser focused on that.
• 22:39
Speaker 12: And we always knew it wasn't about the dollar amount.
• 22:42
Speaker 12: It's about the impact. It's about the impact of supporting
• 22:45
Speaker 12: our students, supporting our faculty, and ultimately supporting this community
• 22:50
Speaker 12: for years to come.
• 22:51
Speaker 6: What is it about this? institution with its long history
• 22:54
Speaker 6: that makes people want to give back? Because, you know,
• 22:57
Speaker 6: some institutions, man, I mean, people that graduate, they get
• 23:00
Speaker 6: their paper and they're done. They may go to a
• 23:02
Speaker 6: football game, but that's about it. What is it about
• 23:05
Speaker 6: West Virginia State, though, that makes these people that have
• 23:07
Speaker 6: gone on to success want to give back?
• 23:10
  Speaker 1: Absolutely.
• 23:10
Speaker 12: So what I will say to that, one of our
• 23:12
Speaker 12: slogans is it starts at state. And that's where people
• 23:16
Speaker 12: really believe and truly have trust that their journey in
• 23:20
Speaker 12: life and the way that their life was changed started
• 23:24
Speaker 12: on the campus of West Virginia State University. And us
• 23:26
Speaker 12: being a small institution, we're focused on our community, we're close-knit,
• 23:31
Speaker 12: and we give opportunity, right? We're one that you're a
• 23:35
Speaker 12: non-traditional student, an individual that may be an adult that's
• 23:38
Speaker 12: working full-time, have kids, still can come and have an
• 23:41
Speaker 12: education here at West Virginia State University. And I believe
• 23:45
Speaker 12: it means a lot to this valley. And you can
• 23:48
Speaker 12: walk around and you're state gear and you get stopped
• 23:50
Speaker 12: multiple times a day and said, hey, I'm a graduate
• 23:53
Speaker 12: of West Virginia State University. Actually, as I was coming
• 23:55
Speaker 12: in here, Mr. Albert, who was just up here, he said,
• 23:58
Speaker 12: I graduated from West Virginia State University. So that's where
• 24:02
Speaker 12: people really feel like, hey, if it wasn't for West
• 24:04
Speaker 12: Virginia State University, where would I be? And that's really
• 24:08
Speaker 12: trusting and telling our story, which our communications and marketing
• 24:12
Speaker 12: team has done a tremendous job with telling our story.
• 24:14
Speaker 12: And we was able to you know, coattail on that
• 24:17
Speaker 12: and get it out there and really get our donors,
• 24:20
Speaker 12: you know, rejuvenated and excited to give again. Because again,
• 24:24
Speaker 12: this was the largest fundraiser initiative in the school's history.
• 24:26
Speaker 6: And now you're going to celebrate. Now we're going to celebrate.
• 24:29
Speaker 6: Talk about this celebration you've got planned.
• 24:30
Speaker 12: Well, the celebration that we have planned, again, it goes
• 24:34
Speaker 12: back to connecting with our community, right? And the vision
• 24:37
Speaker 12: that I had was, hey, how do we connect back
• 24:40
Speaker 12: with our community and let them know that we appreciate
• 24:43
Speaker 12: them trusting and believing in Western Virginia State University and
• 24:46
Speaker 12: This is the future of West Virginia State University. And
• 24:50
Speaker 12: as you see, our campaign name was The State of Tomorrow.
• 24:54
Speaker 12: So one of the things that I wanted to do
• 24:55
Speaker 12: is connect with our alums. And one of our alums
• 25:00
Speaker 12: is Mr. Todd Hutchison, who used to work here, I've heard.
• 25:03
Speaker 12: I've been talking to him several times. His DJ name
• 25:06
Speaker 12: is DJ Act Right. And I was communicating with him.
• 25:09
Speaker 6: Great guy and a legend.
• 25:10
  Speaker 10: A legend.
• 25:11
Speaker 6: He really is. He's legendary.
• 25:13
Speaker 12: So I connected with him and I shared my vision
• 25:15
Speaker 12: with him. I said, hey, I really want you to
• 25:17
Speaker 12: come back on campus, you know, and show your talent,
• 25:20
Speaker 12: show your skill. And this is an alum that's not
• 25:23
Speaker 12: too far removed from West Virginia State University. And how
• 25:26
Speaker 12: does this reach back to our current students? You know,
• 25:29
Speaker 12: students now, they love music. They love, you know, spending
• 25:32
Speaker 12: time and celebrating music. So that was one of the
• 25:35
Speaker 12: things that I wanted to do, bring to campus. And
• 25:38
Speaker 12: one of the things that I really looked at is
• 25:40
  Speaker 12: he he's a, you know, tour DJ for. a Grammy-nominated
• 25:44
Speaker 12: hip-hop artist, and Petey Pablo. And a lot of people
• 25:47
Speaker 12: know Petey Pablo and his songs, so I wanted to
• 25:51
Speaker 12: incorporate that and get him to campus. And that was
• 25:54
Speaker 12: the easiest way to do it, right? Bringing in your
• 25:56
Speaker 12: alum as his DJ.
• 25:58
Speaker 6: He is his DJ. He goes on the road, goes
• 26:02
Speaker 6: all over the world with Petey Pablo.
• 26:04
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 26:05
Speaker 12: So, you know, Petey Pablo has some good hits, and
• 26:08
Speaker 12: we know this is going to be during the day.
• 26:10
Speaker 12: But another thing that I wanted to add to that
• 26:11
Speaker 12: piece is Given a platform for our students. So one
• 26:16
Speaker 12: of our students, Mr. Jadius Thomas, will be performing on
• 26:19
Speaker 12: the same stage and opening up for Mr.
• 26:22
  Speaker 1: Kampan.
• 26:23
Speaker 12: Kampan is a great individual here in the community that
• 26:27
Speaker 12: does a lot for our students, more especially our student athletes.
• 26:31
Speaker 12: He's a barber by trade and a talented artist. He
• 26:35
Speaker 12: cuts a lot of our students' hairs. And I wanted
• 26:38
Speaker 12: him to come in and showcase his talent outside of
• 26:40
  Speaker 12: just cutting hair.
• 26:41
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 26:42
Speaker 12: So that our students will be able to see that.
• 26:44
Speaker 12: So that was tying everything together to really have a
• 26:49
Speaker 12: successful celebration that will happen tomorrow on our campus from
• 26:53
  Speaker 12: 11 to 2 p.m., 11 a.m.
• 26:56
  Speaker 6: To 2 p.m.
• 26:56
  Speaker 2: Tomorrow.
• 26:57
Speaker 12: And we're looking forward to celebrating us completing this capital
• 27:00
Speaker 12: campaign with our campus community and with the community that
• 27:04
Speaker 12: comes out and celebrate with us.
• 27:05
Speaker 6: It's going to be a great event again. It starts
• 27:07
Speaker 6: at 11 o'clock tomorrow on the campus of West Virginia
• 27:10
Speaker 6: State University, and it's open to the public. I mean,
• 27:12
Speaker 6: people can come out and they can enjoy the music
• 27:15
Speaker 6: or just fellowship a little bit, almost like a reunion. Absolutely.
• 27:18
Speaker 12: And that's what we want to do because we are
• 27:20
Speaker 12: the university that helps this community and We want to
• 27:23
Speaker 12: continue to support this community in everything that we can do.
• 27:26
Speaker 6: Is there a place maybe on your social media or
• 27:28
Speaker 6: website that people can learn more about?
• 27:30
Speaker 12: So our social media is putting out a lot of
• 27:32
Speaker 12: posts about the lineup for tomorrow from 11 a.m.
• 27:36
  Speaker 6: To 2 p.m.
• 27:36
Speaker 12: And then also they have put out a post of
• 27:39
Speaker 12: our food vendors that will be out there as well.
• 27:42
Speaker 12: And we are really excited to just celebrate. this momentum,
• 27:47
Speaker 12: and then this historic moment in the history of West
• 27:49
  Speaker 12: Virginia State University.
• 27:50
Speaker 6: Again, it's all happening tomorrow. It starts at 11 o'clock.
• 27:52
Speaker 6: Trey Jones, West Virginia State Vice President for University Advancement.
• 27:56
Speaker 6: I'll give you like the last 30 seconds or so
• 27:58
Speaker 6: just to thank the people that contributed to this capital campaign. Absolutely, absolutely.
• 28:02
Speaker 12: From, you know, as we said before, if it wasn't
• 28:05
Speaker 12: for our alums, our friends, our supporters, and our donors,
• 28:09
Speaker 12: we would not be where we are celebrating 135 years
• 28:12
Speaker 12: of this institution. And more importantly, we also are celebrating
• 28:16
Speaker 12: to see a capital campaign that was a five-year capital
• 28:19
Speaker 12: campaign in two and a half years. So thank you
• 28:21
Speaker 12: to every donor that believed in our vision that supported
• 28:25
Speaker 12: West Virginia State University. But always remember, we are helping
• 28:29
Speaker 12: to achieve the goals and dreams of our students that
• 28:31
Speaker 12: are on our campus. So thank you so much.
• 28:33
Speaker 6: Trey Jones, Vice President for University Advancement, West Virginia State.
• 28:36
Speaker 6: Appreciate you being here, man. Thank you. Thank you for
• 28:38
Speaker 6: the opportunity. Absolutely. 24 minutes away from 10. Back after

Speaker 6: We talked on the show in the past and on
• 31:22
Speaker 6: Midday as well about the Ascend West Virginia program. It's
• 31:25
Speaker 6: a program designed by Marshall President Brad Smith and his wife, Elise,
• 31:28
Speaker 6: to get people to try to move here to West Virginia.
• 31:30
Speaker 6: Big happenings today at Capital Market. as there's going to
• 31:33
Speaker 6: be a one-year celebration of the program. Mara Boggs is
• 31:35
Speaker 6: here from the Charleston Area Alliance. How you doing, Mara?
• 31:37
  Speaker 1: Good.
• 31:38
Speaker 17: Thank you for having us this morning.
• 31:39
  Speaker 5: Dr.
• 31:39
Speaker 6: Michelle Foster of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation. How are
• 31:42
Speaker 6: you doing, Dave? I'm doing fine. And Dr. Danny Twilley
• 31:46
Speaker 6: of the Brad and Elise Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative.
• 31:50
Speaker 6: Did I get your title right? You got it right.
• 31:51
  Speaker 6: It's a big title.
• 31:52
  Speaker 17: It is.
• 31:52
Speaker 6: It really is. Well, we don't have any time for
• 31:54
Speaker 6: anything else now, so thanks for coming in.
• 31:56
  Speaker 3: Dr.
• 31:57
Speaker 6: Twilley, I want to start with you. Talk about this program.
• 31:59
Speaker 6: Why was it so important for President Brad Smith and
• 32:02
Speaker 6: his wife, Elise, to begin this program?
• 32:03
Speaker 11: Yeah, so I think they will talk about it, and
• 32:06
Speaker 11: they saw some fundamental shifts in terms of especially accelerated
• 32:09
Speaker 11: by COVID around rural is kind of the new urban.
• 32:13
Speaker 11: They recognize that with the advancements of technology, people now
• 32:17
Speaker 11: have a choice more than ever of where they can live, work,
• 32:20
Speaker 11: and play. And why not incentivize and support them in
• 32:23
Speaker 11: doing that in West Virginia? And in doing so, a
• 32:26
Speaker 11: couple of things happen. One of those is we get
• 32:28
Speaker 11: to address one of the biggest challenges our state is facing,
• 32:31
Speaker 11: and that's population loss. So how can we bring people
• 32:35
Speaker 11: in to help address that? And when you bring people
• 32:38
Speaker 11: in and you can connect them to each other to
• 32:40
Speaker 11: create community, you help them engage in their community. And
• 32:44
Speaker 11: you give them a sense of purpose and then connect
• 32:46
Speaker 11: them to something we all love as West Virginia, the outdoors.
• 32:49
Speaker 11: You can have this sticking power, this retention, and they
• 32:52
Speaker 11: can become friends. They can start businesses, start nonprofits, and
• 32:56
Speaker 11: they can help make us all better.
• 32:58
Speaker 6: And the whole idea was to try to get people
• 33:00
Speaker 6: to come here to West Virginia. And as people, I think, discovered, Mario,
• 33:03
Speaker 6: you can speak to this or Dr. Foster, either one,
• 33:06
Speaker 6: during COVID-19, I think people learn that they can work
• 33:09
Speaker 6: from a variety of different places as long as they've
• 33:11
  Speaker 6: got Wi-Fi. We're working on that, but it's a lot
• 33:14
Speaker 6: better than it used to be. But they also, especially
• 33:17
Speaker 6: with younger people, they have a sense of wanting the
• 33:20
Speaker 6: outdoors aspect of it. And a lot of them realize
• 33:24
Speaker 6: that West Virginia... gives you a little bit of everything because,
• 33:28
Speaker 6: you know, you have four seasons. We'll start there. That
• 33:31
Speaker 6: makes Brian Hughes happy. We have four seasons. Okay, there's that.
• 33:35
Speaker 6: But you have access to other cities if you want
• 33:37
Speaker 6: to go to Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Lexington. It's not that far away.
• 33:40
Speaker 6: But to come here and live and be able to
• 33:42
Speaker 6: enjoy the great outdoors, work remotely, I mean, they found
• 33:45
Speaker 6: West Virginia was kind of a win-win.
• 33:47
Speaker 17: That's right. And that is why, that is exactly why
• 33:50
Speaker 17: Ascend has a 96.2% retention rate of all residents who
• 33:54
Speaker 17: move here. It's because it creates that sense of community.
• 33:58
Speaker 17: And from the perspective of the Alliance, the Ascend program
• 34:01
Speaker 17: has allowed us to modernize our approach to economic and
• 34:04
Speaker 17: community development. It allows us to leverage our community to
• 34:08
Speaker 17: attract people to address our most pressing challenge, which is
• 34:13
Speaker 17: population loss, which gives us more buyers, more shoppers, more residents,
• 34:18
Speaker 17: more homebuyers, everything that we need to really have true
• 34:22
  Speaker 17: economic development.
• 34:23
Speaker 6: What have been some of the stories for anybody here
• 34:26
Speaker 6: of the people that have moved here that have come
• 34:28
Speaker 6: in for this program. Give us a couple of statements
• 34:32
Speaker 6: from people. You have anybody that said, hey, I love
• 34:35
Speaker 6: this because of this or whatever?
• 34:37
  Speaker 12: Yeah.
• 34:37
Speaker 11: I mean, I think we could fill up the whole
• 34:39
Speaker 11: show with just some of the remarkable people that have come.
• 34:42
Speaker 11: I mean, we've had people come and start their own businesses. Um,
• 34:46
Speaker 11: One of my favorite stories is we had a couple
• 34:49
  Speaker 11: come from L.A.
• 34:50
Speaker 6: Now, when we say L.A., I want to say Los Angeles.
• 34:53
  Speaker 6: Not Logan area.
• 34:53
  Speaker 5: Not Logan area.
• 34:54
  Speaker 9: Good point.
• 34:55
Speaker 6: Because where I'm from, L.A. means something different. So this
• 34:58
Speaker 6: is the actual Los Angeles.
• 34:59
Speaker 2: The actual Los Angeles.
• 35:01
Speaker 11: And they were able to actually purchase a home, and
• 35:04
Speaker 11: they said they never would have been able to do
• 35:06
Speaker 11: that in Los Angeles. And so we have people that
• 35:09
Speaker 11: have been able to purchase their first home, 40% of
• 35:11
Speaker 11: our people. participants purchase a house. And that means there's
• 35:15
Speaker 11: a commitment. We've had people say they've always wanted to
• 35:18
Speaker 11: kind of live on like a farm and they've been
• 35:22
Speaker 11: able to do that. We've had people renovate houses. We've
• 35:25
Speaker 11: had people build their dream houses. And so for me,
• 35:28
Speaker 11: I think, you know, that's part of the American dream.
• 35:31
Speaker 11: That's part of it is being able to purchase and
• 35:34
Speaker 11: live in a community of your choice. And I think
• 35:35
Speaker 11: that's what we're getting over and over again from these
• 35:39
  Speaker 11: Ascend members.
• 35:40
Speaker 6: And we have a tendency to say in West Virginia,
• 35:42
Speaker 6: and I think this is probably true of anywhere, people
• 35:44
Speaker 6: just say, wow, things are so expensive. Try buying a
• 35:47
Speaker 6: home in Los Angeles right now. I mean, West Virginia is,
• 35:50
Speaker 6: we're way down as far as the cost of living
• 35:52
Speaker 6: and things of that nature. Mari, you know that.
• 35:54
Speaker 17: Oh, and you'll hear from Giovanni Chiana today if you
• 35:59
Speaker 17: come to our And she'll tell you why Ascend is
• 36:03
Speaker 17: the instant coffee for West Virginia.
• 36:06
Speaker 6: And the event is going to be at Capital Market.
• 36:08
  Speaker 15: That's right.
• 36:09
Speaker 17: And thanks to Dr. Foster, we have a very large
• 36:13
Speaker 17: announcement in people and communities.
• 36:14
Speaker 6: Now, Dr. Foster, we're not going to give it away here.
• 36:18
Speaker 6: We want people to come out there. But I got
• 36:20
Speaker 6: a little inside information here. It is a major announcement
• 36:23
Speaker 6: that's going to happen today at Capital Market at 1230.
• 36:25
Speaker 18: It's a major announcement. The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation said,
• 36:29
Speaker 18: exists because there are so many generous people in our
• 36:33
Speaker 18: community now and have been, you know, for the 60
• 36:36
Speaker 18: plus years that we've been in existence. So because of
• 36:39
Speaker 18: the generosity of our donors, we are able to be
• 36:42
Speaker 18: a partner, a major partner in this effort because our
• 36:46
Speaker 18: foundation is about investing in initiatives where the people in
• 36:49
Speaker 18: places we serve have the opportunity to thrive. And we
• 36:52
Speaker 18: believe this is a perfect initiative that we figured out
• 36:55
Speaker 18: how to get these dollars together. to be a major
• 36:59
Speaker 18: partner in this effort.
• 37:00
Speaker 6: When the announcement first came out about this Ascend West
• 37:04
Speaker 6: Virginia program, it was met with some skepticism, as new
• 37:07
Speaker 6: things are from time to time, but I think everybody's
• 37:10
Speaker 6: pretty much on board with this, Dr.
• 37:12
Speaker 11: Yeah, and I actually appreciated the skepticism because it made
• 37:15
Speaker 11: us better. It made us tell our story more, and
• 37:18
Speaker 11: it made us work for it, and that's okay. That's
• 37:20
Speaker 11: actually an all right thing. But really, you know, with partnerships,
• 37:23
Speaker 11: I think is at the center of everything we've done
• 37:25
Speaker 11: with this program. And we're going to be able to
• 37:27
Speaker 11: celebrate a major one today. But we also, you know,
• 37:30
Speaker 11: most recently we partnered with the state of West Virginia
• 37:33
Speaker 11: and the Ascend Heroes program and the West Virginia National
• 37:36
Speaker 11: Guard to help bring veterans to the state of West
• 37:40
Speaker 11: Virginia and serving those who served us. And that's a
• 37:43
Speaker 11: very important part. And then last week, You know, we
• 37:46
Speaker 11: were able to partner with the state and the Secretary
• 37:48
Speaker 11: of Health and announce the rural health transformation or send
• 37:52
Speaker 11: health care. And so we know that there's critical shortages
• 37:55
Speaker 11: in our medical providers. And how can we use this
• 37:58
Speaker 11: model to attract and retain health care providers in the
• 38:02
Speaker 11: state of West Virginia?
• 38:03
Speaker 6: And Mara, that's something you know a little bit about
• 38:05
Speaker 6: as far as bringing the veterans in here.
• 38:06
  Speaker 5: That's right.
• 38:07
Speaker 6: Very, very important thing.
• 38:08
Speaker 17: Yeah, absolutely. And veterans, you know, there's so many benefits
• 38:12
Speaker 17: to bringing more veterans and their families here from the
• 38:14
Speaker 17: leadership they bring. the resources, the networks. And so the
• 38:18
Speaker 17: Ascend Heroes program is so good for our state for
• 38:23
Speaker 17: so many reasons. Plus, we have one of the largest
• 38:27
Speaker 17: per capita of veterans in the nation, so we're adding
• 38:30
  Speaker 17: to that.
• 38:31
Speaker 6: Nobody's given more as far as what West Virginia has.
• 38:34
Speaker 6: We're always the first ones to sign up to volunteer
• 38:36
Speaker 6: or whatever. So the event is today at 1230 at
• 38:40
Speaker 6: Capital Market, and we invite everybody to come out.
• 38:43
Speaker 17: And if you'd like lunch, come a little early at 1145.
• 38:46
Speaker 17: We've got some really special community celebration with some wonderful lunch, too.
• 38:51
Speaker 6: All right. Well, talk about the lunch. That's of interest
• 38:53
  Speaker 6: to me.
• 38:54
Speaker 17: It's a taste of Capital Market.
• 38:57
  Speaker 6: I love it.
• 38:57
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 38:58
Speaker 6: I mean, because Capital Market really is a hidden gem.
• 39:00
Speaker 6: I mean, big shout out to all those folks. We
• 39:02
Speaker 6: have them on the air here. from time to time.
• 39:04
Speaker 6: And so many great things that happen in capital market.
• 39:07
Speaker 6: I mean, you hear about something going on in Charleston,
• 39:08
Speaker 6: chances are it's happening in the capital market because they
• 39:10
Speaker 6: do a little bit of everything. Doctor, what are the
• 39:12
Speaker 6: final words before we let you go that you want
• 39:14
Speaker 6: to say going forward for the Ascend West Virginia program?
• 39:17
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 39:17
Speaker 11: If you have interest, if you have a friend, family,
• 39:20
Speaker 11: please get it out there. And if you have just
• 39:23
Speaker 11: want to learn more, reach out to me. I'd be
• 39:25
Speaker 11: happy to share. And I'd be remiss if I didn't
• 39:28
Speaker 11: just give a lot of credit to West Virginia University
• 39:31
Speaker 11: because Brad and Lee Smith had this vision and they
• 39:34
Speaker 11: empowered us in order to carry out that vision. And
• 39:37
Speaker 11: without West Virginia University's support from the leadership on down
• 39:42
Speaker 11: and leaning into our land grant mission, we wouldn't be
• 39:44
Speaker 11: able to do this work. So I always want to
• 39:46
Speaker 11: celebrate my university and all the great things that it's
• 39:50
Speaker 11: able to do for the state of West Virginia.
• 39:52
  Speaker 7: Dr.
• 39:52
Speaker 6: Foster, I want to give you, I know you're going
• 39:54
Speaker 6: to be part of the big announcement today, but outside
• 39:56
Speaker 6: of this, what's going on with your foundation? What do
• 39:58
Speaker 6: you get doing otherwise?
• 39:59
Speaker 18: Oh, our foundation is growing through the generosity of so
• 40:04
Speaker 18: many donors. We are growing. We are supporting nonprofits like
• 40:09
Speaker 18: never before, helping them to strengthen their their operations, build
• 40:13
Speaker 18: their capacity, and just expanding our team so that we
• 40:17
Speaker 18: can continue to provide the best services to our donors
• 40:20
  Speaker 18: that we can.
• 40:21
Speaker 6: Everything's happening today at Capital Market. It starts at 1230.
• 40:25
  Speaker 1: Dr.
• 40:25

• 43:38
Speaker 6: as a team or individually. Then afterwards, stick around for

Speaker 6: Giving across the state of West Virginia. We'll talk to
• 43:59
Speaker 6: the people from the United Way of Central West Virginia
• 44:01
Speaker 6: about that. It is Wednesday, meaning high school sports line
• 44:05
Speaker 6: gets underway tonight, just after 7, kicking off high school football.
• 44:09
Speaker 6: More on that in a couple of moments. Fred Persinger
• 44:11
Speaker 6: will be in with a preview. And there are some really,
• 44:13
Speaker 6: really good games scheduled specifically here in the Kanawha Valley.
• 44:16
Speaker 6: As I said, I'll get to that in a bit.
• 44:18
Speaker 6: Delegate Sean Flewharty is going to stop by. Among other things,
• 44:21
Speaker 6: of course, they just came off interims in Charleston. We'll
• 44:23
Speaker 6: talk about that. Here's a real problem with what the
• 44:26
Speaker 6: governor is up to. He, the governor, is out in
• 44:29
Speaker 6: wine country in California taking part in some $ 25, 000 a
• 44:32
  Speaker 6: plate dinners. Yes, I said $ 25, 000 a So we'll talk
• 44:39
Speaker 6: to Delegate Flewharty about that.
• 44:41
  Speaker 1: T.J.
• 44:41
Speaker 6: Meadows will stop by with commentary. I know it's still
• 44:44
Speaker 6: officially summer. Autumn doesn't even kick in until next Tuesday.
• 44:48
Speaker 6: But what are the hottest toys this Christmas? We have
• 44:52
Speaker 6: a story on that coming up, plus this week's wonderful
• 44:54
Speaker 6: West Virginian and Open Mind West Virginia, Metro News Midday,
• 44:57
Speaker 6: 13 News, and tonight live anchor Amanda Barron and me,
• 45:00
Speaker 6: powered by Solango Law at Newsday. And speaking of the network,
• 45:03
Speaker 6: I do want to remind you, of the changes that
• 45:06
Speaker 6: are happening on the Metro News Radio Network. Now, starting
• 45:09
Speaker 6: next Monday, Metro News Midday will cut back to two
• 45:12
Speaker 6: hours from noon till two. Hotline will air two to five.
• 45:16
Speaker 6: Sportsline will expand to two hours, five to seven. So
• 45:19
Speaker 6: your lineup here on WCHS will look like this. Of course,
• 45:22
  Speaker 6: American Morning, 5 a.m. till 6 a.m., The Morning News
• 45:26
Speaker 6: at 6, and From Time to Time and Ask the
• 45:29
Speaker 6: Expert thrown in there at 820, much like we had
• 45:31
Speaker 6: this morning. This show, 580 Live, remains the same, 9
• 45:34
Speaker 6: to 10. Talk line with Meadows and Wilson, no changes there,
• 45:38
Speaker 6: 10 till noon. Midday with Amanda and me now from
• 45:40
Speaker 6: noon till 2. Hotline will start one hour early now
• 45:44
Speaker 6: and will run 2 to 5. And Metrodew Sportsline airs
• 45:47
Speaker 6: now 5 to 7. And the new lineup will start
• 45:50
Speaker 6: next Monday. Now on this show tomorrow, Jason Quintrell from
• 45:54
Speaker 6: Union Mission is going to stop by along with Tom
• 45:57
Speaker 6: Menturn of Chick-fil-A. There's some really good stuff going on
• 45:59
Speaker 6: with Union Mission. It has been announced that Union Mission
• 46:02
Speaker 6: has been selected as a Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Award winner
• 46:07
Speaker 6: and has picked up a $ 35, 000 grant to help those
• 46:10
Speaker 6: in the community. We'll talk to Jason Quintrell and Tom
• 46:12
Speaker 6: Mintern about that coming up on tomorrow's show. Let me
• 46:16
Speaker 6: knock out a couple of texts here. How about Ed
• 46:18
Speaker 6: Sheeran taking a big old fat L on behalf of
• 46:25
Speaker 6: Israel and the Patriots owner, massage parlor enthusiast Robert Kraft? However,
• 46:29
Speaker 6: genocide supporters shouldn't get their panties. Well, I guess you
• 46:32
Speaker 6: could say panties. wadded up over some mediocre musicians quitting
• 46:36
Speaker 6: a tour of the genocidal policies of Israel because the
• 46:39
Speaker 6: Trump administration is sending Israel plenty of bombs to keep
• 46:42
Speaker 6: the genocide going. WWJD dropped bombs on women and kids,
• 46:47
Speaker 6: of course, says a texter. Text, Dave, West Virginia State
• 46:51
Speaker 6: University is a blessing. I received my bachelor's degree from
• 46:55
Speaker 6: WVSU and went on to a highly successful career as
• 46:58
Speaker 6: an educator and then a pharmaceutical company. It is a
• 47:01
Speaker 6: great success. University, says a texter. I would tend to
• 47:05
Speaker 6: agree with that. I mean, I did not attend West
• 47:07
Speaker 6: Virginia State. I've been on campus several times, been to
• 47:10
  Speaker 6: several events there.
• 47:11
  Speaker 1: Dr.
• 47:12
Speaker 6: Cage even gifted me with a really nice, actually two
• 47:14
Speaker 6: coffee mugs, although today I didn't really think about it
• 47:18
Speaker 6: when I had the folks from West Virginia State on,
• 47:20
Speaker 6: and I'm drinking out of my Marshall mug over here,
• 47:22
Speaker 6: but I do have my West Virginia State mug. Next
• 47:24
Speaker 6: time the West Virginia State folks come in, I will
• 47:27
Speaker 6: do the right thing, and I'll bring out my West
• 47:29
Speaker 6: Virginia State coffee mug. I invite you to join me
• 47:32
Speaker 6: every Friday morning, 9-0-6, for the Adopt Me Please Pet
• 47:34
Speaker 6: of the Week from the Canala Charleston Humane Association, brought
• 47:36
Speaker 6: to you by Almost Heaven Interiors, family-owned, proudly serving the
• 47:40
Speaker 6: community for over 50 years. They specialize in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery,
• 47:44
Speaker 6: and beautifully crafted sewn goods. Homes to hospitals, classrooms to
• 47:47
Speaker 6: commercial spaces, they do it all, 516 D Street in
• 47:51
Speaker 6: South Charleston. A couple of quick things in the news.
• 47:53
Speaker 6: Chris told you earlier there was an accident. involving a
• 47:56
Speaker 6: Charleston police cruiser on 77, happened at mile marker 101
• 48:00
Speaker 6: just outside town. Now, the officer, according to release from
• 48:03
Speaker 6: the Charleston Police Department, the officer was transported to the
• 48:06
Speaker 6: hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The
• 48:08
Speaker 6: roadway is open now. And we are losing a restaurant
• 48:13
Speaker 6: in Charleston while another one expands. Geno's on Lee Street
• 48:18
Speaker 6: West announcing yesterday that they are closing restaurants. due to
• 48:21
Speaker 6: economic conditions, this is their words, economic conditions, sustained decline
• 48:26
Speaker 6: in sales, and the rising cost of doing business. Now,
• 48:28
Speaker 6: no other Genos in the area are going to be impacted.
• 48:30
Speaker 6: Of course, Genos and Tudors are owned by the same people,
• 48:34
Speaker 6: and it's been announced that the Tudors over in that
• 48:36
Speaker 6: part of town is actually going to be expanding. So
• 48:39
Speaker 6: less pepperoni, more gravy, apparently. High school football Friday night,
• 48:43
Speaker 6: our WCHS Game of the Week is going to be
• 48:45
Speaker 6: a good one, as South Charleston at 3-0, is going
• 48:48
Speaker 6: to host also undefeated GW. That game Friday night here
• 48:53
Speaker 6: on WCHS. Now over on 96.1 KWS, two more undefeated
• 48:57
Speaker 6: teams will face off. So basically Friday night, we got
• 49:00
Speaker 6: two games involving four undefeated teams. On KWS, Herbert Hoover
• 49:04
Speaker 6: will play host to Beckley Woodrow Wilson. Both teams are undefeated.
• 49:08
Speaker 6: And just to add to the mix, we have college
• 49:10
Speaker 6: football on 107.3 to beat. Coming up Saturday afternoon, 1 o'clock,
• 49:14
Speaker 6: it's West Virginia State. We'll play host to West Virginia Wesleyan. Also,
• 49:18
Speaker 6: as if we need something else. to promote, I do
• 49:21
Speaker 6: want to let you know that our good friends at
• 49:23
Speaker 6: V100 every Wednesday do Working Women's Wednesday at the Red
• 49:27
Speaker 6: Carpet Lounge. So that is going on after work today.
• 49:30
Speaker 6: So no need to go on home. Just head over
• 49:32
Speaker 6: to the Red Carpet Lounge and hang out with the
• 49:34
Speaker 6: folks from V100. They do that every Wednesday evening. starting,
• 49:38
Speaker 6: I think, about four or so at the Red Carpet Lounge.
• 49:42
Speaker 6: TJ Meadows is here. How you doing, man?
• 49:44
  Speaker 13: Great.
• 49:45
Speaker 15: You're like the ultimate promo guy. I think the only
• 49:48
Speaker 15: thing that could have made that better is you would
• 49:50
Speaker 15: have done it in your Dusty Rhodes voice.
• 49:53
Speaker 6: Oh, you're too kind.
• 49:55
  Speaker 1: Come on, Danny.
• 49:56
Speaker 6: You want me to do it, but no, I'm not.
• 49:59
Speaker 6: Not in T.J. Meadows, if you will.
• 50:01
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 50:01
Speaker 6: I'm not going to do the whole thing. So how
• 50:03
Speaker 6: are you doing? You had a little trepidation, sir, yesterday
• 50:08
Speaker 6: when you joined us on Midday about your commentary. Did
• 50:12
Speaker 6: you– you don't have to really– I mean, I read–
• 50:15
Speaker 6: I actually heard your commentary on the air, read it
• 50:17
Speaker 6: on the website, wvmetronews.com. Didn't seem to be that bad
• 50:21
Speaker 6: to me. Or did you have something else in mind
• 50:23
Speaker 6: you didn't go with?
• 50:24
  Speaker 5: No.
• 50:24
Speaker 15: I mean, I just think, look, there has become this
• 50:27
Speaker 15: very vocal minority. that anytime we want to talk about
• 50:31
Speaker 15: protecting children, some see it as an attack on homeschoolers,
• 50:36
Speaker 15: which it is not.
• 50:38
  Speaker 9: It is not.
• 50:39
Speaker 15: It has everything to do with protecting children. It has
• 50:41
Speaker 15: nothing to do with homeschooling. And look, I've seen it.
• 50:45
Speaker 15: I've already gotten some of the messages. You know, here
• 50:47
Speaker 15: you go again, bashing homeschoolers.
• 50:48
  Speaker 11: No.
• 50:48
Speaker 6: See, I didn't take it that way at all. Oh,
• 50:51
Speaker 6: I had notes last night when it hit. Okay. Here
• 50:54
Speaker 6: you are again, bashing.
• 50:55
  Speaker 5: No.
• 50:56
Speaker 6: That is not what I am doing.
• 50:58
Speaker 15: What I'm telling you is we live in a republic, David,
• 51:00
Speaker 15: and in a republic, we have to surrender some of
• 51:03
Speaker 15: our freedoms. This isn't a pure democracy. We do that
• 51:06
Speaker 15: for a civil society and to promote the general welfare.
• 51:10
Speaker 15: And that is part and parcel with protecting kids, our
• 51:13
Speaker 15: most vulnerable. There can be no doubt. There can be
• 51:16
Speaker 15: no doubt that some kids are being exited out of
• 51:19
Speaker 15: the school system into situations that are not ideal. Look
• 51:22
Speaker 15: at Sissonville. Google for yourself. I don't want to steer
• 51:24
Speaker 15: you one way or the other.
• 51:25
  Speaker 5: Google.
• 51:25
Speaker 6: You can find one in almost every state. So it's happening,
• 51:29
Speaker 6: like it or not. I didn't, I mean, again, maybe it's,
• 51:33
Speaker 6: I didn't think it was that bad. And I guess
• 51:35
Speaker 6: maybe I'm a little bit biased because I actually know
• 51:37
Speaker 6: you and know your belief system. I did not see
• 51:40
Speaker 6: it as attacking homeschooling at all. Well, look, I don't
• 51:43
Speaker 6: think many did, but again, sometimes a minority is vocal.
• 51:46
Speaker 6: And I, you know, that's fine.
• 51:48
Speaker 15: As my mentor and friend, And the guy that hired
• 51:51
Speaker 15: me for this job, Hoppy Kerchival, would say, truth in the.
• 51:54
Speaker 6: Gallows, sir. All right.
• 51:55
Speaker 15: What you got on the show today, otherwise? Adam Burkhammer
• 51:58
Speaker 15: will join us. Lewis County Delegate Knee Deep, one of
• 52:00
Speaker 15: the folks molding this legislation. Coming up, we'll talk with him.
• 52:03
Speaker 15: Eben Brown, Fox News Radio. Patricia Rucker, Jefferson County Senator
• 52:06
Speaker 15: on Amendment 1. Should we constitutionalize the fact that if
• 52:09
Speaker 15: you are a foreigner, you can't vote? In West Virginia.
• 52:12
Speaker 15: That's law, but doesn't need to be in the Constitution.
• 52:14
Speaker 15: Check in with Nick Preservati.
• 52:16
Speaker 6: Talk nuclear. Talk PJM. Talk coal.
• 52:18
Speaker 15: He's the energy czar and Notre Dame's favorite son, former fullback.
• 52:23
Speaker 6: I call him the Gipper. He's on at 1106. All right.
• 52:26
Speaker 6: I'll see you later today on Metro News Midday. Until then,
• 52:28
Speaker 6: have fun. I love somebody.
• 52:42
Speaker 1: I am EWCHS AM 96.5 FM Charleston 104.5 Cross Lane
• 52:44
Speaker 1: on WVRC Media Station.
