- 0:00Hi everyone, Welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:20As you can possibly tell, I am so congested right now and I
- 0:26thought that I was having really bad hay fever when I woke up
- 0:29because that is common for me. Like I am quite allergic to like
- 0:32dust and when the seasons change and stuff.
- 0:35But I took a Claritin, it's not getting any better and I feel
- 0:39like I'm starting to feel a bit sick like in my body.
- 0:43So now I'm wondering if like my whole mentee bee that I had at
- 0:46the beginning of the week being like, I'm so run down, I'm so
- 0:49overwhelmed and feel so out of control.
- 0:51If that was like leading up to me getting sick, which would
- 0:55track because I always get very cranky right before I get sick
- 0:59and around when I'm sick. And obviously I didn't like,
- 1:03know that I was getting sick. If this is sick, I don't know if
- 1:05this is sick. I guess we'll see if I record
- 1:08tomorrow. If there's a mini scroll
- 1:09tomorrow just means that I had hay fever.
- 1:11If I don't, then that means that I'm sick.
- 1:13But yes, so I am. Here, I am recording for you
- 1:16guys. Hopefully this goes OK in terms
- 1:19of like my sneezing. I'm having like sneezing attacks
- 1:21and stuff and we will see how I am.
- 1:24I'm here by myself today. The girls don't work from the
- 1:26office on Wednesday, so I'm not getting anyone sick if I am
- 1:29sick, thankfully, but we will just play it by ear.
- 1:31All right, let's just get right in to the stories.
- 1:33So the first story that I have for you guys, I'm sorry, I know
- 1:36that I talk about JoJo Siwa like every fucking day on this
- 1:38podcast. And if you don't care about JoJo
- 1:42Siwa, this is probably really annoying for you.
- 1:44But I feel like there's in like certain periods of time in
- 1:48celebrity and influencer culture.
- 1:49There's certain personalities who are obviously either on like
- 1:52press tours or like they're just really buzzy.
- 1:54And she's just one of those people, You know, for a while it
- 1:56was Taylor Swift. Like almost every episode we
- 1:58talked about Taylor. Now here we are talking about
- 2:00JoJo. So JoJo Siwa, it seems as though
- 2:03she might be changing her perspective on child stardom.
- 2:08So it seems that JoJo might be ready to confront the realities
- 2:11of her child stardom. In a new interview with
- 2:13Australian radio personality Small Z, JoJo opened up about
- 2:17her experience as a child star, and her comments contradict some
- 2:21of the recent things she has said in the past.
- 2:24So JoJo went on the Call Her Daddy podcast, as we know
- 2:27recently, and a lot of those clips went viral.
- 2:30But something that didn't get enough attention was JoJo
- 2:33talking about her Coogan account and kind of her mom as her
- 2:37manager. So for anyone that doesn't know
- 2:39a Coogan account, that's based off of the Coogan law, and
- 2:42essentially it's in the US. It's for child stars or anyone
- 2:46who's a minor that works in like entertainment, and it protects
- 2:50children from like, their parents taking all of their
- 2:52money. So 15% of what the child makes
- 2:55goes into a protected account called a Coogan account, and
- 2:59they have access to that when they're 18.
- 3:01The downside of that is that still 85% of their income while
- 3:05they're minors working can go to their family and their parents.
- 3:09And that seems to be the case with JoJo because on Call her
- 3:11Daddy, she said that her parents were concerned that when she
- 3:16turned 18, she would take the money in her Coogan account.
- 3:18And she would basically be like, all right, bye.
- 3:21And she would stop helping support them because I guess
- 3:24they live off of, of course, what she was making all these
- 3:26years. And she said on call her daddy,
- 3:29you know, I reassured them like I wouldn't do that.
- 3:31And I look at it now and I feel like so lucky that I get to help
- 3:35support my family and I get to give them this life.
- 3:38So she definitely still is supporting her family.
- 3:41I mean as far as it sounds. But then last week when she went
- 3:45on this Australian radio show, she had different things to say.
- 3:49So she said that she does feel taken advantage of as a child
- 3:54star. She said different than you know
- 3:56how some of her colleagues felt taken advantage of when the
- 4:00Quiet on Set documentary came out and they shared their
- 4:03stories. She said she was not taken
- 4:05advantage of in a quote UN quote like sexual way.
- 4:07But she said from a business perspective she was, which is
- 4:10really interesting. And then she also just kind of
- 4:14like Off the cuff said that child stars should get 100% of
- 4:18their Coogan account, which is very interesting because as we
- 4:22know, her parents were living off the 85% of her income that
- 4:26wasn't going into her Coogan account.
- 4:28So a lot of people are taking these comments since they are so
- 4:31different from what she said before as possibly an indication
- 4:34that she is starting to kind of reconcile with what happened to
- 4:38her. And if you listen to this
- 4:39podcast, you know, I talk about JoJo all the time, but I also
- 4:42talk about how she is a child *. And we don't give her enough
- 4:45grace for the trauma that she would have been through and that
- 4:48it's very obvious to me at that she hasn't done a lot of work in
- 4:52like a reconciling with the trauma that would come with
- 4:55being a child star. Like she obviously was exploited
- 4:58in many ways. And she doesn't seem to have the
- 5:03capacity at the moment to deal with that.
- 5:05And I think that's because she's maintained so much relevance and
- 5:07success and fame. So I think that this could be
- 5:11the first little sprinkle of us seeing JoJo enter this new era
- 5:15where she is ready to start confronting some of that stuff.
- 5:19I hope she does, but I hope she does it in a healthy and
- 5:22Safeway. And I've said this before, but I
- 5:26think we're going to get some wild tell all book in like 10 to
- 5:3120 years from her. All right.
- 5:32The next story that I have for you guys is that The Four
- 5:35Seasons Orlando is open to collaborating with a fully
- 5:40conscious baby. That is a brain rot sentence if
- 5:44I have ever said one. OK, so the girls like Annabelle
- 5:48and Alex have been telling me all week since Monday that I
- 5:50need to talk about fully conscious baby on mini scroll.
- 5:53But I keep being like, well, what would I say?
- 5:56Like there's this viral video and the baby puts his hand up
- 6:00and it's so proper and everybody's making memes of it.
- 6:02I mean, I guess I talk about memes on this podcast, but this
- 6:05one is just such a. It's not like a cultural moment
- 6:08that you can participate in. In the same way that I think
- 6:10when we talked about like slice scene talk or even when I talked
- 6:13about galvanized square steel talk, like those are things I
- 6:16don't know, they just feel more like marketing moments.
- 6:18Whereas this is just like a viral video, right?
- 6:21OK, so there's this video. I'm sure you guys have seen it,
- 6:23but a mom comes down the stairs and her husband is holding a
- 6:27baby. And then there's a toddler and
- 6:28she says, who wants to go The Four Seasons Orlando?
- 6:31And they all say me and the baby.
- 6:34It's motor skills seems so refined.
- 6:37Like she puts up her hand like this and her one finger is
- 6:39pointed. She's like me.
- 6:42People are like, how does she know what you're saying?
- 6:44How does she know what The Four Seasons Orlando is like?
- 6:46She just said me like, right on the dot.
- 6:49How is she putting her hand up like that?
- 6:51It's in such a proper way. It's like she has such amazing
- 6:53dexterity. So it's turned into this like,
- 6:55whole thing online. So now the Rolling Stone has
- 6:58interviewed the mother behind a fully conscious baby.
- 7:01Also, people are calling her fully conscious baby because
- 7:04she's like, fully conscious. Like she's like, it's it's like
- 7:06an adult in a baby suit. That's what people are saying.
- 7:09OK, so the baby's name is Kate. She is 13 months old.
- 7:13Because I did see a lot of people say, oh, it's very clear
- 7:16that that baby is like 2 years old but maybe just like looks
- 7:18younger. And that's why she's like more
- 7:21conscious, quote, UN quote. But now she's 13 months old.
- 7:24And like I said, the mother was interviewed for Rolling Stone.
- 7:27She says that she's like loving the feedback and that they have
- 7:30this family group chat and people are screenshotting and
- 7:33posting a lot of the like stitches and tiktoks and
- 7:36comments and whatever that are really funny, like sending them
- 7:38to each other. She said that Kate, the baby, is
- 7:41not fully conscious. She says that she says things
- 7:45like yes, no, like. She just responds in however
- 7:47which way she wants to. And that, like this particular
- 7:51video just happened to be like serendipitous where she just
- 7:54said like the perfect right thing and did the right thing at
- 7:57the right time. And they caught it on camera,
- 7:59obviously. And now, of course, Four
- 8:02Seasons. Orlando has said that they are
- 8:04looking to collaborate great with fully Conscious Baby and
- 8:07her family. Classic.
- 8:09No, but honestly, that would just be such a missed
- 8:10opportunity if they didn't Like, you have to jump on moments like
- 8:13this. I actually saw a video from the
- 8:16woman that runs the Duolingo account.
- 8:19And you know, obviously Duolingo was like so successful on TikTok
- 8:22and she was talking about the song I'm looking for a man in
- 8:25finance, that one that's going off on TikTok.
- 8:27And she was like, people ask me all the time, like brands and
- 8:30marketing managers ask me all the time, how do we capitalize
- 8:33on this? How do we make, like, authentic
- 8:35viral moments on TikTok? And she's like, this is the
- 8:38time, this song that's like viral right now.
- 8:41If you are a financial services company or you touch money and
- 8:44finances in any way, you need to be looking to collaborate with
- 8:49this girl that made this song. You need to be looking to use
- 8:52this song. You need to create content
- 8:55around this moment. So yes, it would have been a
- 8:57massively missed opportunity for The Four Seasons Orlando to not
- 9:02collaborate great with this family.
- 9:04And yeah, hopefully they get, you know, maybe a little free
- 9:06vacation. All right.
- 9:07And the last story that I have for you guys is that Open AI has
- 9:11allegedly seemingly stolen Scarlett Johansson's voice.
- 9:16So Scarlett Johansson is accusing Open AICEO Sam Altman
- 9:21of recreating her voice for the chat bot of his company's chat
- 9:25GB Tai system called Sky, as reported by Entertainment
- 9:28Tonight. Scarlett Johansson said Quote
- 9:31last September I received an offer from Sam Altman who wanted
- 9:34to hire me to voice the current ChatGPT 4 Point O system.
- 9:38He told me that he felt that by my voicing the system, I could
- 9:41bridge the gap between tech companies and creative and help
- 9:44consumers to feel comfortable with the seismic shift
- 9:47concerning humans and AI. He said he felt that my voice
- 9:50would be comforting people. Scarlett ended up declining
- 9:54after quote much consideration and for personal reasons.
- 9:58However, she said so many of her friends and family members noted
- 10:01how similar Skies Chat bot voice sounds to her voice.
- 10:05And Sam Altman, also like Low Key, confirmed that it was based
- 10:10on Scarlets voice. He tweeted her in relation to
- 10:13the chat bot, and this is a reference to a 2013 film in
- 10:17which Scarlet voiced an AI chat bot.
- 10:20The film was titled Her She said Quote.
- 10:22In a time when we are all grappling with deep fakes and
- 10:25the protection of our own likeness, our own work, our own
- 10:27identities, I believe these are questions that deserve absolute
- 10:30clarity. I look forward to resolution in
- 10:33the form of transparency in the passage of appropriate
- 10:35legislation to help ensure that individual rights are protected
- 10:39and Scarlett has actually been one celebrity that has been very
- 10:42vocal about the risk of AI and deep fakes, journalist Cat 10
- 10:47Barge tweeted yesterday. Scarlett Johansson and AI.
- 10:50She has been one of the celebrities at the forefront of
- 10:52the non consensual deep fakes issue for longer than most
- 10:55people knew they existed. She spoke out about the legal
- 10:57impossibilities of fighting them back in 2018.
- 11:01So in response to all of this, Sam Altman issued a statement to
- 11:05The Verge. He said, quote, the voice of Sky
- 11:08is not Scarlett Johansson and it never intended to resemble hers.
- 11:12We cast the voice actor behind Sky's voice before any outreach
- 11:16to Miss Johansson. Out of respect for Miss
- 11:19Johansson, we have paused Sky's voice in our products.
- 11:22We are sorry to Miss Johansson that we didn't communicate
- 11:25better. Do I believe that they tried to
- 11:27find somebody who sounds like Scarlett Johansson?
- 11:30Yes, probably. I do believe that.
- 11:33I think it's cool that she's pushing back on this and that
- 11:36she's speaking out about this. I mean, this is such an ongoing
- 11:39problem that these big tech giants, they have so much money
- 11:41and so much power and they just like steamroll entire industries
- 11:46and they make so much change so quickly and they just, they play
- 11:52God like that's what they do. And I think it's really cool to
- 11:56see such a prolific celebrity, somebody who is such a mainstay
- 11:59in pop culture, like push back and be like, fuck you.
- 12:03We're not doing this. Anyways, guys, that is it for
- 12:06Mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 12:09Please remember to rate review and subscribe.
- 12:11As I said, if there is no episode tomorrow, I am sorry,
- 12:15but I am sick. If there is, that means I just
- 12:19have allergies. All right, guys.
- 12:22Thank you so much for listening. I love you and I might talk to
- 12:24you tomorrow. If not, there will still be a
- 12:26deep dive on Friday. All right.
- 12:27Bye.
