• 1:36
  Speaker 4: we're gonna address I don't know if I want to
• 1:39
Speaker 4: use that word. We're gonna discuss youth football. We're gonna
• 1:44
Speaker 4: talk about, you know, what the experience is like in
• 1:48
Speaker 4: coaching it, and what is the experience in all of
• 1:54
Speaker 4: the challenges that come with it, and a lot of
• 1:57
Speaker 4: times when we're talking about that, we're talking about, you know,
• 2:02
Speaker 4: the league breakups and and what that does too.
• 2:07
Speaker 2: To some of the parents and how the parents feel.
• 2:10
Speaker 4: And I've got and I'm gonna introduce them here in
• 2:13
Speaker 4: just a second, but I've got two South Charleston coaches
• 2:16
Speaker 4: here today to kind of kind of kind of give
• 2:18
Speaker 4: the insight to what it is that they go through coaching.
• 2:24
Speaker 4: Both of them have situations where they're coaching their son.
• 2:28
Speaker 4: Because that'll obviously be a conversation, you know, as the
• 2:31
Speaker 4: term as as we know it as daddy ball. A
• 2:36
Speaker 4: lot of parents are upset when they see that. So
• 2:42
Speaker 4: let me let me introduce my one of my one
• 2:49
Speaker 4: of my really really really really good friends that I
• 2:52
Speaker 4: have uh had the opportunity to to meet in youth football,
• 3:01
Speaker 4: mister Kinder. And what what what what makes what makes
• 3:06
Speaker 4: this relationship really struggle is that he is a diehard
• 3:11
Speaker 4: Packer fan. And I don't know if I've ever actually
• 3:14
Speaker 4: asked you, how did you become a Packer fan?
• 3:17
Speaker 2: I want to ask you that.
• 3:18
Speaker 5: All right. So I was about seven years old whenever
• 3:22
Speaker 5: I've become a green Bay fan. We were sitting in
• 3:24
Speaker 5: my living room watching the green Bay game and I'm
• 3:28
Speaker 5: pretty sure it was a Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions,
• 3:32
Speaker 5: and we intercepted a ball and they formed a circle.
• 3:37
Speaker 2: You notice that you're saying we yeah.
• 3:39
Speaker 6: Okay, yeah, Well you know I am a Packer.
• 3:42
Speaker 5: Okay, I'm working on getting a part of the ownership.
• 3:46
Speaker 2: Okay, I'm with you.
• 3:48
Speaker 5: So green Bay, they intercepted the ball, they formed a
• 3:51
Speaker 5: circle around the guy that intercepted the ball, and he
• 3:54
Speaker 5: ran it back for a touchdown. I just thought that
• 3:56
Speaker 5: was the coolest thing ever. And I've been in cheesehead
• 3:58
  Speaker 5: ever since.
• 3:59
  Speaker 4: Okay, I guess I can't hold that against you. A
• 4:03
Speaker 4: father of six. Yep has been coaching for five years
• 4:08
Speaker 4: at South Charleston. Also coaches basketball in the basketball league
• 4:13
Speaker 4: for a church league. That's been for seven years, or
• 4:21
Speaker 4: that's the seven years with youth football.
• 4:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, seven years with you football. We're going on our
• 4:25
Speaker 5: fourth year at New.
• 4:26
Speaker 2: Fire Beast and you're over and you run that.
• 4:28
Speaker 5: I do, yes, Me and my wife we run that
• 4:30
Speaker 5: ministry out of our Church's becoming pretty successful.
• 4:33
Speaker 2: That's good. That's good stuff, all right.
• 4:36
Speaker 4: And Fred Fred Waldern and Fred has been with us
• 4:41
  Speaker 4: season four seasons.
• 4:43
Speaker 7: Four seasons, coaching three.
• 4:44
Speaker 2: And you also coach your son.
• 4:47
Speaker 4: Tell us a little bit about your relationship and coaching
• 4:50
Speaker 4: before I kind of give you a little bit more
• 4:52
Speaker 4: of an introduction. Tell us a little bit about your
• 4:55
Speaker 4: son and the relationship that you and him have, because
• 4:57
  Speaker 4: I think it's a really special relationship that that I
• 5:00
Speaker 4: don't know if everybody knows it, and I think it's
• 5:02
Speaker 4: something important to know.
• 5:04
Speaker 7: This one's a little different. You had mentioned the daddy
• 5:07
Speaker 7: bass situation. I'm one of the coaches now that I
• 5:10
Speaker 7: prefer not to coach my kid. I prefer to This year,
• 5:13
Speaker 7: I stood back and let you know, kinder take the
• 5:16
Speaker 7: reins and step up and give him more, you know,
• 5:19
Speaker 7: of an opportunity. And I've held back and stayed with
• 5:22
Speaker 7: the younger league, by the younger players. But starting off
• 5:28
Speaker 7: our first season with him, me coaching with him, you know,
• 5:31
Speaker 7: it was a little rocky. You know, it was hard
• 5:34
Speaker 7: to just you know, juggle that coach on the field
• 5:37
Speaker 7: and at home. Right this thing between him and I,
• 5:42
Speaker 7: and I pulled the trigger and I was like, I
• 5:44
Speaker 7: think this year I want to kind of kick him
• 5:46
Speaker 7: off the kender and let kinder coach him and other coaches,
• 5:50
Speaker 7: you know, to step back and stay with the little guys,
• 5:53
Speaker 7: which I do prefer coaching the smaller little you know,
• 5:56
Speaker 7: the little guys that just come into it.
• 5:58
Speaker 4: Okay, And he's forty three years old and has lived
• 6:03
Speaker 4: in South Trust in his entire life. And he's been
• 6:06
Speaker 4: with the football program for four seasons now. So anytime,
• 6:14
Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, when we start talking about news football,
• 6:18
Speaker 4: it's always kind of touchy. It's always somewhat of a
• 6:24
Speaker 4: of somebody gets hurt, somebody gets you know, they get
• 6:28
Speaker 4: mad at what we say or what we don't say,
• 6:30
Speaker 4: or you know, why did we say that? And and
• 6:35
Speaker 4: I want to make the case that youth football K
• 6:40
Speaker 4: through six is the development age of the future kids
• 6:49
Speaker 4: who are going to play in middle school and high school,
• 6:56
Speaker 4: and winning, while everybody loves to win, yeah, cannot be
• 7:05
Speaker 4: the the ultimate goal.
• 7:08
Speaker 5: No, And I think I think that's exactly the path
• 7:11
Speaker 5: that we're going down.
• 7:12
Speaker 6: That's wrong, in my opinion, in youth football.
• 7:16
Speaker 4: So elaborate a little bit. What what what what does it?
• 7:20
Speaker 4: How does it bother you? And what what are you
• 7:22
Speaker 4: seeing that you think makes it that we're heading down
• 7:26
  Speaker 4: that way?
• 7:27
Speaker 5: Well? I, uh, back when my oldest son he started
• 7:30
Speaker 5: playing for a Tornado, I noticed that when I taking
• 7:34
Speaker 5: the practice, they had a pretty good squad, you know
• 7:36
Speaker 5: what I mean, they were good back then.
• 7:39
  Speaker 6: They were.
• 7:39
Speaker 5: And I noticed that he played on the line because
• 7:42
Speaker 5: he was a little bit heathier back then.
• 7:43
  Speaker 6: And and uh.
• 7:45
Speaker 5: They never once in six weeks showed the lineman how
• 7:49
Speaker 5: the block, showed him anything. They they focused mainly on
• 7:53
Speaker 5: their running backs and getting them out on the edge
• 7:57
Speaker 5: and scoring and they were good at it. But uh,
• 8:00
Speaker 5: you know, I mean they never taught to kids anything right,
• 8:04
Speaker 5: and you can still see that today with you know,
• 8:07
Speaker 5: everybody's talking about, well we beat down this team forty
• 8:10
Speaker 5: two to nothing. We beat this kid this team thirty
• 8:13
Speaker 5: to nothing. You know, and you never see them actually
• 8:16
Speaker 5: out there showing the kids how to properly block or
• 8:20
Speaker 5: that any of the fundamentals blocking and tackling any of that.
• 8:24
Speaker 6: You know. So I'm one of.
• 8:26
Speaker 5: The coaches that will tell you straight up that win
• 8:30
Speaker 5: is the least important thing that I care about. You know,
• 8:32
Speaker 5: your kids safety is by far my most priority, and
• 8:37
Speaker 5: teaching them the fundamentals and development of the game would
• 8:40
  Speaker 5: be the second.
• 8:41
Speaker 4: So and Fred, you've had an opportunity to to to
• 8:47
Speaker 4: watch and to coach. Yes, how different is it when
• 8:54
Speaker 4: you're not coaching compared to actually physically being out there
• 8:58
Speaker 4: and you're again you're with the young eat the k
• 9:01
Speaker 4: through choos, so you're out there with them.
• 9:05
Speaker 2: It is. It's got to be a difference.
• 9:08
Speaker 7: Well, I'm open minded. When we first put Tanner into
• 9:12
Speaker 7: football my first season, I got to watch Kender. It's
• 9:15
Speaker 7: Kender's reason why I am in football and coaching in football.
• 9:18
Speaker 7: He pulled me in the last bit of the season
• 9:20
Speaker 7: that we were parents and you know, supporting our kids
• 9:23
Speaker 7: and the players. You know, when I was there, I
• 9:28
Speaker 7: had already some experience at that, you know, dealing with
• 9:31
Speaker 7: the teaching kids and stuff was my previous place of employment,
• 9:35
Speaker 7: you know, knowing that, hey, it's tough, it's a you know,
• 9:38
Speaker 7: you got to be out there and understand what they're
• 9:40
Speaker 7: going through. You know, every you know, every coach is different,
• 9:44
Speaker 7: but there's you know, pretty much only one group of
• 9:47
Speaker 7: parents for those players. And you know, when you step
• 9:50
Speaker 7: out on the field, it is a complete different ball
• 9:52
Speaker 7: game when you're coming to coaching the kids. I mean,
• 9:54
Speaker 7: everybody things speaking, go out there and just tell this
• 9:57
Speaker 7: kid this and they get at that moment or kill us.
• 9:59
Speaker 7: Tell us kid not to do this, and they'll stop
• 10:01
Speaker 7: that moment. You know, it's a big difference between being
• 10:05
Speaker 7: a parent and being a coach.
• 10:07
Speaker 4: I had asked one of the gentlemen from our practice
• 10:11
Speaker 4: that comes to our practice a bunch, and I asked him,
• 10:15
Speaker 4: you know, about the possibility.
• 10:17
Speaker 2: Would he be willing to coach.
• 10:21
Speaker 4: And he and he responded, he said, no, you know,
• 10:26
  Speaker 4: I just don't think I could I could do it.
• 10:29
Speaker 4: And when I hear that, you know, I think I
• 10:35
Speaker 4: think parents, and I think if you've got a kid,
• 10:40
Speaker 4: if you've got a young kid, and all of a
• 10:42
Speaker 4: sudden you want to take on for us, maybe fifteen
• 10:46
Speaker 4: or eighteen kids all in and around that same age.
• 10:52
  Speaker 4: That's a that's a challenge because you're trying to get
• 10:54
Speaker 4: these kids to actually to pay attention Unlike the classroom
• 11:01
Speaker 4: like yesterday when when when we took a break, when
• 11:04
Speaker 4: when when the younger kids took the break, and I
• 11:07
Speaker 4: and and maybe your team was out there too. They're
• 11:09
Speaker 4: grabbing stuff, they're swinging stuff and hitting each other. They're
• 11:14
Speaker 4: like having they have fun anytime other than when they're
• 11:18
Speaker 4: locked into the idea of actually participating in a drill.
• 11:25
Speaker 4: How do you how do you mentally? And and and
• 11:28
Speaker 4: of course I did. I'll tell them myself. I was
• 11:32
Speaker 4: I was working for you a little bit yesterday and
• 11:36
Speaker 4: and went off on the kids because they weren't paying attention.
• 11:39
Speaker 4: You know, how do you how do you? How do
• 11:42
Speaker 4: you manage that both between both of you?
• 11:45
Speaker 5: It can get it can get difficult at times, you
• 11:48
Speaker 5: know what I mean. But I think, uh, some of
• 11:51
Speaker 5: what really helps me out is that, you know, I
• 11:53
Speaker 5: try to understand that they're all, you know, anywhere between
• 11:57
Speaker 5: five and ten years old, you know, so they don't
• 12:00
Speaker 5: really understand the you know, respect aspect of things. They
• 12:04
Speaker 5: don't understand what football really demands out of you. So
• 12:09
Speaker 5: it's kind of our job as their coaches to teach
• 12:12
Speaker 5: them that. And that's not something that you can teach
• 12:14
Speaker 5: them in six weeks in a season, right, That's something
• 12:17
Speaker 5: that you have to develop over time with these kids.
• 12:20
Speaker 5: And I think that's what helps me out with the
• 12:23
Speaker 5: kids that I have that I've coached now for four years,
• 12:25
Speaker 5: five years straight, as they have had me for so
• 12:28
Speaker 5: many years, So they understand what I demand out of
• 12:31
Speaker 5: them and I ask out of them, and you know,
• 12:34
Speaker 5: I'll be able to say hey, you know, and they
• 12:36
Speaker 5: all pay attention, but if say one of my assistants
• 12:39
Speaker 5: do it, then they're not paying any attention to him whatsoever.
• 12:42
Speaker 5: So I think that, you know, it takes it takes
• 12:46
Speaker 5: quite some time to be able to teach these kids
• 12:49
Speaker 5: that stuff, and you got to sometimes get down on
• 12:52
Speaker 5: their level, you know what I mean, And understand, Listen,
• 12:54
  Speaker 5: I wasn't a good kid back when I was seven
• 12:57
Speaker 5: years old, you know what I mean. I got thrown
• 12:59
Speaker 5: out of a couple of foot ball games at seven, so
• 13:02
Speaker 5: you know what I mean. So I could see that,
• 13:05
Speaker 5: So you gotta kind of understand. You know, hey, look,
• 13:07
Speaker 5: you know, let me walk you over here and sets
• 13:09
Speaker 5: you down and find out what's really happening and why
• 13:12
Speaker 5: you're acting the way you're acting, and then we can
• 13:15
Speaker 5: kind of go from there and try to adjust it.
• 13:16
Speaker 6: And you know what I mean.
• 13:17
  Speaker 4: So, Fred, you're to me when I when I I
• 13:23
Speaker 4: watch you coach, when I watch your mannerisms, it's interesting
• 13:27
Speaker 4: to me because your your your mannerisms as a person
• 13:32
Speaker 4: is a calm, collective, thoughtful kind of individual that doesn't
• 13:38
Speaker 4: always fit the coaching realm.
• 13:41
  Speaker 2: And and you're.
• 13:43
Speaker 4: And you're good with the kids that that you deal with,
• 13:47
Speaker 4: and which are the younger kids? How do you is
• 13:52
Speaker 4: that just your nature that you just keep you you
• 13:55
Speaker 4: push into trying to trying to work.
• 13:57
Speaker 2: With these kids? I think that do you add on
• 14:01
  Speaker 2: to it?
• 14:01
Speaker 4: Do you have to add on to that calmness and
• 14:05
Speaker 4: patience to to to make it.
• 14:10
Speaker 2: Work for you? Uh?
• 14:14
Speaker 7: Years of like with these kids at that age. I
• 14:17
Speaker 7: mean my whole life, I've been around little kids, babysitting
• 14:20
Speaker 7: and all that stuff and everything. And I guess the
• 14:24
Speaker 7: training I've had, you know, and of course me the
• 14:28
Speaker 7: experience I've had, it's really helped me you know, I
• 14:31
Speaker 7: have a lot of people come up and that's the
• 14:32
Speaker 7: first thing they say, how do you have the patience
• 14:34
Speaker 7: for it? How do you how do you have the
• 14:35
Speaker 7: patience for it? You know? These kids, to me, I
• 14:39
  Speaker 7: set myself I think it's a little bit of a
• 14:40
Speaker 7: challenge too, Like can I take this five year old
• 14:43
Speaker 7: and this six year old and open my eyes up
• 14:46
Speaker 7: at the end of the season and see him grow
• 14:48
Speaker 7: progressively through the season and in a positive manner of
• 14:52
Speaker 7: you know, getting better at football or behaving better. It's
• 14:56
Speaker 7: you know, I look at everything was you know, I
• 14:59
Speaker 7: guess it's kind of like a challenge for me. That's
• 15:01
Speaker 7: why I'm getting more out of it. I was like,
• 15:03
Speaker 7: I want to see these kids at the end of
• 15:04
Speaker 7: the season are going up to the next level with
• 15:06
Speaker 7: kinder and be successful a little bit, you know. So
• 15:11
Speaker 7: and so that's what I'm kind of shooting for and
• 15:14
Speaker 7: your group, the young group.
• 15:16
Speaker 2: I mean, you know, for me.
• 15:19
Speaker 4: I'm standing on the sidelines and I'm trying to watch
• 15:22
Speaker 4: them run a play or or play defense and stop
• 15:25
Speaker 4: them and I'm seeing how they didn't stop them or
• 15:29
Speaker 4: oh that was a good stop. I'm not really for me,
• 15:33
  Speaker 4: it's it's it's a little bit harder because I'm not
• 15:36
Speaker 4: hands on to see where they come from. Not that
• 15:39
Speaker 4: I can't see that we can get better, and we're
• 15:42
Speaker 4: getting better, but the process it must feel really, really
• 15:48
Speaker 4: really good to you when you see just even like
• 15:52
Speaker 4: some of the scrimmage, like the scrimmages the other day,
• 15:54
Speaker 4: like you know those some of those tackles were like
• 15:57
Speaker 4: big tackles, And I have to say, I have to
• 16:00
Speaker 4: throw a shout out to to to.
• 16:05
Speaker 2: Uh Bo. I mean.
• 16:07
Speaker 4: No, no, God Bear, Yeah, I gotta throw a shout
• 16:12
Speaker 4: out the bear because I'm telling you this, this young
• 16:19
Speaker 4: kid gave us for the last couple of years as
• 16:25
Speaker 4: no interest, like he had no interest whatsoever to really
• 16:29
Speaker 4: be out there. Mom is mom is, Mama is a
• 16:32
Speaker 4: great mom and and a and a and a and
• 16:35
Speaker 4: a stern mom. And so once you start, you're you're finishing.
• 16:41
Speaker 2: And man, some of the tackles that he's making now and.
• 16:46
Speaker 4: Now he's and and everybody knows what a middle linebacker is,
• 16:49
Speaker 4: and I think you all had him at middle linebacker.
• 16:51
Speaker 4: So you're talking about a kid who is gone from
• 16:56
  Speaker 4: like is.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: He even gonna? What's he doing out there?
• 16:58
Speaker 4: Like there's no reason for him to be out there
• 17:00
Speaker 4: to now to a middle linebacker who is making tackles
• 17:05
Speaker 4: like in that scrimmage against saying he's like making solid tackles.
• 17:09
Speaker 7: He made. He made some pretty solid tackles at the
• 17:12
Speaker 7: previous at the grid. Yes, there too, he did very
• 17:14
Speaker 7: well there. Once he gets you know, once we sit
• 17:18
Speaker 7: down and say hey, this is your job, this is
• 17:20
Speaker 7: what your responsibility is, he he takes into that, you know,
• 17:24
Speaker 7: and you know he doesn't, you know, he'll progress a
• 17:27
Speaker 7: lot quicker to me. I noticed, like just pulling him
• 17:30
Speaker 7: for a second and say hey, come back here for
• 17:32
Speaker 7: a second, let me talk to you. And then he
• 17:33
Speaker 7: goes right back ontter and he does it, you know,
• 17:36
Speaker 7: and he catches on fairly quickly on what he needs
• 17:38
  Speaker 7: to do.
• 17:39
Speaker 5: And this is the same kid that was doing front
• 17:41
Speaker 5: flips on the five yard line.
• 17:43
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and that's that's just some that isn't
• 17:47
Speaker 4: I'm telling you that, you know, because you can't see it.
• 17:51
Speaker 4: You're just listening to us and assuming that we're telling
• 17:54
  Speaker 4: you the truth.
• 17:55
  Speaker 2: It's a it's amazing to.
• 17:57
Speaker 4: Me as a as a player, as a former player
• 18:01
Speaker 4: who's been around football when you see that kid.
• 18:06
Speaker 2: Two years ago, three years ago, you're.
• 18:09
  Speaker 4: Saying, I don't I don't think second like, I don't
• 18:14
Speaker 4: think that he's going to be that kid, you know,
• 18:17
Speaker 4: like he's you know, it's gonna be tough of mom
• 18:20
Speaker 4: because you know he's just not he's just not.
• 18:24
Speaker 2: He just doesn't have it.
• 18:25
Speaker 4: And then all of a sudden, you wake up in
• 18:28
Speaker 4: this season and he's as physical as anybody on your team.
• 18:34
Speaker 7: Well the previous season. I think late in the last season,
• 18:37
Speaker 7: I had told our head coach, I've see team Doug.
• 18:40
Speaker 7: I said, you know, this kid's could have prevailed. He's
• 18:43
Speaker 7: going to be a threat. I said, don't you know,
• 18:46
Speaker 7: make sure you remember, like look into him. He's going
• 18:48
Speaker 7: to be something, you know, and he had he's showing it.
• 18:51
Speaker 7: You know that he is could be a running the
• 18:53
Speaker 7: ball and also in the defense aspect.
• 18:56
Speaker 5: So yeah, and I think that's why you can't give
• 18:58
Speaker 5: up on these kids, you know what I mean?
• 19:00
Speaker 6: Yeah, they might be this way.
• 19:02
Speaker 5: And we have one and I won't mention his name,
• 19:04
Speaker 5: but we call him speed Bump because we're always tripping
• 19:07
Speaker 5: over him, you know what I mean. But you tell
• 19:10
Speaker 5: me in two years that the kid won't snap it
• 19:12
Speaker 5: together and become one of the better ones. I mean,
• 19:14
Speaker 5: you just can't work.
• 19:15
Speaker 7: We're giving our full resources into these kids, you know,
• 19:18
Speaker 7: and they're I mean, if they don't get it this season,
• 19:21
Speaker 7: next season, next season, but they're still when every time
• 19:25
Speaker 7: the season is done with I'll you know, I pick
• 19:29
Speaker 7: up pretty much most of the coaches I've worked with
• 19:31
Speaker 7: over the last four years that we're walking away that
• 19:34
Speaker 7: these kids have severely learned and gained something somehow out
• 19:38
Speaker 7: of that season of being with our program, being coached
• 19:41
Speaker 7: by us, and being part of a team and a family.
• 19:44
Speaker 7: That's one thing I've looked at too, like hey, you know,
• 19:47
Speaker 7: I mean if they made two sacks, if they made
• 19:50
Speaker 7: two touchdowns, or if they you know, the goals they
• 19:53
Speaker 7: set themselves, they'll set goals for them. Will come up
• 19:55
Speaker 7: and tell them like, hey, do you think next practice,
• 19:57
Speaker 7: man is try to go this practice and do this.
• 20:00
Speaker 4: And we have a kid, we have a kid that
• 20:01
Speaker 4: you know is really struggling to pay attention.
• 20:05
Speaker 2: You know, you guys know who who that who that
• 20:08
Speaker 2: kid is pay attention.
• 20:09
  Speaker 7: That's that's a good sixty.
• 20:12
Speaker 2: But we but we got we got one. We got
• 20:16
Speaker 2: one one that stands out and I my, my hat's off.
• 20:20
Speaker 4: To mom because she's not she's not giving up on him,
• 20:28
Speaker 4: and and and and I'm and I'm let me.
• 20:30
  Speaker 2: Just justify this.
• 20:32
Speaker 4: This conversation right here is about the good of you football.
• 20:38
Speaker 4: It's it's the things that, yeah, you don't see on Sunday.
• 20:43
Speaker 4: It's the things that you don't necessarily see if you're
• 20:45
Speaker 4: not at practice. And sometimes even if you come to
• 20:49
Speaker 4: practice and you see it, you think.
• 20:50
  Speaker 2: It's something else.
• 20:52
Speaker 4: This is the This is the good in the in
• 20:55
Speaker 4: the in the coaches who coach, and the parents who
• 20:58
Speaker 4: are are dedicated to getting their kid there every day.
• 21:02
Speaker 4: And and even to the point of I'm not letting
• 21:05
Speaker 4: him quit. Mom gets him out there. He was ducking
• 21:11
Speaker 4: a drill and Mom was the one who caught it.
• 21:15
Speaker 4: And she comes out on the field and gets on
• 21:18
Speaker 4: him and tells him, no, you're going to be part
• 21:21
Speaker 4: of this tackling drill. And now he came up and
• 21:25
Speaker 4: asked to get into the scrimmage the other day.
• 21:30
Speaker 5: That's awesome. And you know what, he even knocked the
• 21:32
Speaker 5: kid down. He even got a pancake coming off the line.
• 21:35
Speaker 2: And that that that My hat's off to you guys,
• 21:40
Speaker 2: and and and and the people.
• 21:41
Speaker 4: Who don't know you football are never really paid or
• 21:46
Speaker 4: like it or think it's anything.
• 21:48
Speaker 2: I'm telling you these coaches.
• 21:51
Speaker 4: Not just my coaches here in the studio South Charleston,
• 21:56
Speaker 4: but all these guys that are out there and women
• 21:59
  Speaker 4: who are out.
• 22:00
Speaker 2: There on the field with these kids. Some have great talent.
• 22:04
Speaker 4: Already, some some you really have to work at. And
• 22:10
Speaker 4: and my hat's off to it. And I think it's
• 22:13
Speaker 4: worth having this conversation about it, because if not, I
• 22:20
Speaker 4: think we you know, we we failed to point this
• 22:25
  Speaker 4: out to.
• 22:26
  Speaker 2: To the parents.
• 22:27
Speaker 4: And I'm hoping that, you know, we'll let all the
• 22:31
Speaker 4: parents know that this was our conversation so that they
• 22:35
Speaker 4: can come and hear us saying how proud we are
• 22:40
Speaker 4: of these kids and and what what is actually happening,
• 22:44
Speaker 4: you know, because I think my hat's off to the
• 22:48
Speaker 4: coaches again. I mean, you guys are the you know,
• 22:54
Speaker 4: I'm not overly hands on. I don't typically get out
• 22:58
Speaker 4: there unless you know there's there's issue.
• 23:00
Speaker 2: I try to Now Cavon now now he's.
• 23:04
Speaker 4: He's he's becoming the coach with every tea you know,
• 23:07
Speaker 4: which hats off here. He loves it, you know, he
• 23:11
Speaker 4: gets excited when they do something and and he does
• 23:14
Speaker 4: his muscle, his flex when they do their chess, they
• 23:19
Speaker 4: love it, and and and and what I'm what, I'm
• 23:23
Speaker 4: what I appreciate when I'm watching it. I can appreciate
• 23:28
Speaker 4: the enjoyment of the coaches, appreciating the success and the
• 23:34
Speaker 4: growth of the of these young kids.
• 23:39
Speaker 2: And I'm not I'm not I want us to win.
• 23:42
  Speaker 2: I don't.
• 23:42
  Speaker 4: I don't want to. I don't want by any stretch.
• 23:44
Speaker 4: I don't want anybody to think that I'm not interested
• 23:46
  Speaker 4: in winning.
• 23:48
Speaker 2: But I'm telling you that the reality of.
• 23:53
Speaker 4: What I see in the coaches I can appreciate and
• 23:57
Speaker 4: and and have to respect it, you know. And so
• 24:01
Speaker 4: my hat's off to you guys, and our parents specifically,
• 24:05
Speaker 4: because I know we have these types of parents. Not
• 24:09
Speaker 4: saying nobody else does it, but we have some parents
• 24:12
Speaker 4: that are really wanting you to be on their kids.
• 24:16
Speaker 2: They don't mind you being on their kids. They're telling you.
• 24:20
Speaker 6: To get on them.
• 24:22
Speaker 2: And that's sometimes is hard to find.
• 24:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, because a lot of times it's not that way.
• 24:27
Speaker 5: It's the office exactly.
• 24:28
  Speaker 2: Exactly, all right.

• 25:55
Speaker 4: I want to say that the ugly, let's go to
• 25:58
Speaker 4: the ugly side of it.
• 26:00
Speaker 5: Yeah, well, there's a lot more to talk about on
• 26:02
Speaker 5: that Sideum, yeah, yeah.
• 26:03
  Speaker 2: There there is a there's a lot. I've tried my
• 26:08
Speaker 2: best to try to understand the power, the power, where
• 26:21
  Speaker 2: the power.
• 26:22
Speaker 4: Comes from in our leagues when you're in when we're
• 26:27
  Speaker 4: in charge.
• 26:29
Speaker 2: And I'm and I'll and I'll say this out loud.
• 26:33
Speaker 4: And and as and and as serious as I could
• 26:37
Speaker 4: possibly be youth football. And I don't know what you
• 26:40
Speaker 4: guys are gonna think when I say this, but I
• 26:44
Speaker 4: will have you express your your thoughts and views on it.
• 26:50
Speaker 2: Youth football has to have oversight.
• 26:58
Speaker 4: We cannot, we cannot trust the adults in the room
• 27:04
Speaker 4: to do the best thing for the league itself. And
• 27:10
Speaker 4: when I say the league itself, it's teams. There should
• 27:13
Speaker 4: not be there should never be a reason to have
• 27:17
Speaker 4: to put out a team out of a league.
• 27:22
  Speaker 6: No.
• 27:24
Speaker 4: What should happen is if the president. If I'm the
• 27:28
Speaker 4: president and I act the fool, I say something, do something,
• 27:34
Speaker 4: put ban me and put the pressure on the city
• 27:39
Speaker 4: of South rulest and to put somebody else in. But
• 27:43
Speaker 4: don't because everybody. What do we hear everybody's talking about
• 27:47
Speaker 4: is what it's for the kids. We got to do
• 27:49
Speaker 4: this for the kids.
• 27:50
  Speaker 6: Kids.
• 27:51
Speaker 4: Well, you can't get the you you hurt the kids
• 27:54
Speaker 4: when you get the adults.
• 27:57
  Speaker 2: Tell me what.
• 27:59
Speaker 4: South Charles and has done to be out of any league.
• 28:04
Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not talking specifically. We have not broken
• 28:08
Speaker 4: any rules, we have not done anything.
• 28:10
Speaker 5: We've not had one violation one. I mean, we've had
• 28:14
Speaker 5: one coach thrown out of a game three years ago
• 28:17
Speaker 5: and that was just cause the cost. And I mean
• 28:20
Speaker 5: that's all we've done in the five years that I've
• 28:22
Speaker 5: been president at South or presence at South Charleston.
• 28:25
Speaker 9: SO and and fret I mean, do you I haven't
• 28:30
Speaker 9: seen us present ourselves in a negative manner towards any
• 28:35
Speaker 9: other program out there that you know that we should
• 28:39
Speaker 9: be just like you know, vote, you know, voted off
• 28:44
  Speaker 9: the boat.
• 28:44
Speaker 7: You know, sorry, you're you're done.
• 28:47
Speaker 2: If and if let's let's assume, let's assume that.
• 28:53
Speaker 4: If Charleston had done something, don't don't go after the kids.
• 29:00
Speaker 6: It's not their fault. It's not the only reason that.
• 29:05
Speaker 5: A whole team or a whole city should be banned
• 29:08
Speaker 5: from the league is if you deemed it unsafe to
• 29:11
Speaker 5: go to that place and play a game of football. Actually,
• 29:15
Speaker 5: and there's not a city in this state that you
• 29:18
Speaker 5: can deem unsafe to go play a game of college
• 29:20
Speaker 5: football or college foot I'm sorry, youth football.
• 29:24
  Speaker 6: So I mean it's.
• 29:25
Speaker 4: And and with and and you've got Dunbar playing out
• 29:28
Speaker 4: in the out into the Huntington League.
• 29:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, they're driving forty five minutes to an hour to play. Yeah,
• 29:32
Speaker 5: we're driving forty five minutes to an hour to play
• 29:35
Speaker 5: when we got three teams in our county, in our area.
• 29:39
Speaker 2: Ten minutes away, ten minutes So what it.
• 29:42
  Speaker 6: Makes no sense.
• 29:43
Speaker 4: And it's and it and it amazes me that the
• 29:49
Speaker 4: political round doesn't want to.
• 29:50
Speaker 2: Touch it, So I'll touch it. Somebody.
• 29:55
Speaker 4: Somebody has Somebody has to Somebody has to touch this.
• 29:59
Speaker 2: Somebody has to because.
• 30:00
Speaker 4: If this dies out, if if if I stopped talking
• 30:03
Speaker 4: about it, then it's going to be okay.
• 30:08
  Speaker 2: And and and.
• 30:08
Speaker 4: Let me explain how this process works how they can
• 30:13
Speaker 4: put a team out or how they put teams out.
• 30:17
Speaker 4: So first thing that you have to do is you
• 30:20
Speaker 4: have to call a meeting with everybody with the exception
• 30:24
  Speaker 4: of those teams.
• 30:26
Speaker 5: Okay, which which is which just makes no sense? You
• 30:30
Speaker 5: should have a right to defend yourself, right, you know.
• 30:34
Speaker 2: So you then they vote in.
• 30:37
Speaker 4: So they vote in the president and the whole board,
• 30:39
Speaker 4: and the board is made up of coaches, which are
• 30:43
Speaker 4: presidents or just presidents of the teams that are in
• 30:49
  Speaker 4: the league.
• 30:50
Speaker 2: So we were not.
• 30:54
Speaker 4: South Hills, Saint Albans, Dunbar, and US and Charleston were
• 31:00
Speaker 4: not invited to a meeting. At one point, there had
• 31:04
Speaker 4: to have been a meeting to create a new league
• 31:08
Speaker 4: with all these different teams. Now, whether or not these
• 31:10
Speaker 4: teams all agreed or not, it ultimately at the end
• 31:13
Speaker 4: of the day they said, okay, these teams are not
• 31:15
Speaker 4: going to be in. Then they decided that they would
• 31:19
Speaker 4: allow us twenty minutes to for the reason to make
• 31:25
Speaker 4: a case why we should be in. After that took place,
• 31:29
Speaker 4: they took South charlest I mean they took Saint Albans
• 31:31
Speaker 4: and South Hills. Okay, we're left out. Us dumbar and Charleston.
• 31:42
  Speaker 4: I don't care what the reason is. I don't care
• 31:45
Speaker 4: what the reasoning is, what it was. What bothers me
• 31:50
Speaker 4: is the kids that you are leaving out. You don't
• 31:55
Speaker 4: have to like me. I don't have to like you.
• 31:59
Speaker 4: That's great when you're coaching, and if you're coaching, if
• 32:01
Speaker 4: you're not doing anything bad. I just can't just say, well,
• 32:05
Speaker 4: you know what, I don't like him. I'm gonna get
• 32:06
Speaker 4: rid of him. That makes no sense to me.
• 32:09
  Speaker 2: And ladies and.
• 32:09
Speaker 4: Gentlemen, I'm harping on this, and I'll get everybody else's
• 32:15
Speaker 4: opinion here, but understand that.
• 32:20
Speaker 2: When they do these things, they are hurting kids.
• 32:25
Speaker 4: We have kids not playing because the parents are sick
• 32:28
  Speaker 4: and tired of.
• 32:29
Speaker 2: Going through this. They don't want to travel.
• 32:33
Speaker 4: When we have all these teams in the valley, it
• 32:38
Speaker 4: makes no sense, you know.
• 32:39
Speaker 2: And and and we appreciate the.
• 32:41
Speaker 6: League that we're in absolutely.
• 32:43
Speaker 4: Without any question, but the but why are we there?
• 32:49
Speaker 4: Why are we The name of the league league is
• 32:52
  Speaker 4: Ohio River Valley.
• 32:54
Speaker 5: And that ain't us work all val yah working all Baluce.
• 32:58
  Speaker 4: Yeah, So I mean that's that's kind of how I
• 33:02
Speaker 4: see it. How do you guys feel how do you
• 33:04
Speaker 4: guys address this in your own mind?
• 33:08
Speaker 5: Well, you stated that you don't care what the reasoning is,
• 33:12
Speaker 5: but I'm going to fight you back on it.
• 33:14
  Speaker 6: I do care.
• 33:14
Speaker 5: I think that it is a I mean, you should
• 33:18
Speaker 5: have to tell us the reason that we can't get
• 33:20
Speaker 5: in there. You can't just go and say, well, we're
• 33:22
Speaker 5: not accepting you and we don't have to tell you why.
• 33:26
Speaker 5: I think that's a cowards way of doing things. And
• 33:29
Speaker 5: I mean, you know how I am. I'm just going
• 33:31
Speaker 5: to tell you the way I feel, and I just
• 33:33
Speaker 5: feel like they're taking.
• 33:34
Speaker 6: The cowards way out of it.
• 33:36
Speaker 5: There's got to be an underlying reason why you did it,
• 33:39
Speaker 5: and you should have to come out with that reason
• 33:41
Speaker 5: why you did it and who's involved. I mean, it's
• 33:44
Speaker 5: it makes no sense to me how you can form
• 33:46
Speaker 5: a league. And I mean, I'm even going to say
• 33:49
Speaker 5: that South Charleston's the good kid that sits in the
• 33:52
Speaker 5: corner and doesn't even bother no one, because we haven't
• 33:54
Speaker 5: in the five years that I've been here. So why
• 33:58
Speaker 5: are you keeping them out? You know what I mean?
• 34:00
Speaker 5: And I feel like they should have to explain that.
• 34:03
Speaker 5: But man, I think the community should get behind us
• 34:05
Speaker 5: and force them to kind of say that.
• 34:08
Speaker 2: Yeah. I do agree.
• 34:09
Speaker 4: I do agree with that, and I would like to
• 34:10
Speaker 4: think that, you know, all the teams that are in
• 34:15
Speaker 4: should ask the question or be able to say what
• 34:17
  Speaker 4: we did.
• 34:18
Speaker 6: Yeah, because I mean they had to tell.
• 34:22
Speaker 2: They had to tell these other people something I would
• 34:25
  Speaker 2: I would hope.
• 34:26
Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm sure one guy didn't make the decision. Yeah,
• 34:28
Speaker 5: somebody had to a great because there had to be
• 34:30
  Speaker 5: in a vote.
• 34:31
  Speaker 2: Fred.
• 34:32
Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I agree with Kender. I mean you
• 34:35
Speaker 7: can't sit here and pick three teams and just automatically
• 34:40
Speaker 7: say no and take two other teams and not come
• 34:45
Speaker 7: out and say why. And you know, we're coaches, we're
• 34:51
Speaker 7: sports programs. What do we I mean, we're supposed to
• 34:54
Speaker 7: be role models. I mean it can balance out, like
• 34:57
Speaker 7: look at yourselves, like instead of just saying no, like
• 35:00
Speaker 7: you don't tell it tel players, No, you can't play
• 35:02
Speaker 7: for us. You know, you know we don't like you.
• 35:04
Speaker 7: You know, no, we're going to like to see you know,
• 35:08
Speaker 7: we will either stand up and help with you, work
• 35:10
Speaker 7: with you, or anything to that. But just coming straight
• 35:12
Speaker 7: out and saying three teams no, sorry, you know, when
• 35:15
Speaker 7: I had already allowed two other teams, you know, and
• 35:20
Speaker 7: I felt there was some you know, I wish I
• 35:23
Speaker 7: had a good word to say, not like closed door
• 35:26
Speaker 7: communication between the two teams and then the other three teams,
• 35:31
Speaker 7: because I just felt like, you know, I'll come on in,
• 35:34
Speaker 7: you know, But us, I felt we were more restricted
• 35:36
Speaker 7: than we were told.
• 35:37
Speaker 2: No, you know, yeah, we didn't even like it was
• 35:40
Speaker 2: just a straight no.
• 35:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, like it was like you know, no, you can't
• 35:45
Speaker 4: because you know, we had we had asked after the meeting,
• 35:49
Speaker 4: we had asked, you know, and after they had let
• 35:51
Speaker 4: Saint Aubans and South Hills in, we asked whether or not,
• 35:56
Speaker 4: you know, would you reconsider try to get us in?
• 36:01
Speaker 4: And and then there was no there was there was
• 36:03
Speaker 4: literally no no response.
• 36:05
  Speaker 2: And and again.
• 36:07
  Speaker 4: I don't and I'm not trying to I'm not trying
• 36:10
Speaker 4: to put anything on South Hills at all. But they
• 36:17
Speaker 4: did have you know, they did bring in which was okay,
• 36:21
Speaker 4: which was which which the board approved them to allow
• 36:26
Speaker 4: these kids to come and play for them that were
• 36:29
Speaker 4: super talented kids, super super talented.
• 36:33
Speaker 2: I voted no on it.
• 36:36
Speaker 4: But I got you know, but the boat passed and
• 36:38
Speaker 4: they got so they were able to play. So quote
• 36:42
Speaker 4: legally they were able to play. But if we would
• 36:47
  Speaker 4: have done.
• 36:47
  Speaker 6: That, it would.
• 36:51
Speaker 4: I don't think I personally do not think that we
• 36:54
Speaker 4: would have been allowed to do that. I don't think
• 36:56
Speaker 4: Dunbar would have been allowed to do that. I don't
• 36:59
Speaker 4: think Trump would have been able to have that opportunity.
• 37:03
Speaker 5: And I mean these same kids went to Night Through
• 37:06
Speaker 5: the year the year before.
• 37:07
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 37:08
Speaker 5: So I mean, yeah, that right there tells you the
• 37:11
Speaker 5: path that used football is going down well.
• 37:13
Speaker 4: And then they the attempt was to go to Charleston
• 37:18
Speaker 4: after after the nightro and so or from South Hills
• 37:23
Speaker 4: they were going to go to they were gonna go
• 37:28
Speaker 4: to Dumbar too or to Charleston to help Charleston, which
• 37:32
  Speaker 4: they would.
• 37:33
Speaker 6: Yeah, and and and I mean they haven't been beaten.
• 37:36
Speaker 4: And I'm telling you, these kids are going to be great.
• 37:42
Speaker 4: And they do play and they play travel football and
• 37:45
Speaker 4: and so so they so they know they know the game.
• 37:49
Speaker 4: And my hat's off to to the dad and and
• 37:53
Speaker 4: and to the kids. But again, it can't ever come
• 37:58
Speaker 4: down to a single group or a group or a
• 38:04
Speaker 4: tea or a player or a dad or coach wanting
• 38:09
  Speaker 4: what they want.
• 38:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you just can't there's no common sense
• 38:15
Speaker 5: behind So let's take South Charleston and Dunbar, for instance.
• 38:19
  Speaker 6: There's a bridge that literally.
• 38:21
Speaker 5: Connects the two cities, and we're playing two and a
• 38:25
Speaker 5: half hours away from one another. So if we're all
• 38:27
Speaker 5: the way up in Warren, Ohio, and they're all the
• 38:29
Speaker 5: way and we don't even play it, yeah, I mean,
• 38:32
Speaker 5: we don't even play it, you know what I'm saying.
• 38:33
Speaker 5: So they're an hour that way, we're an hour and
• 38:35
Speaker 5: thirty minutes of the opposite direction. So we got a
• 38:38
Speaker 5: bridge that connects the two teams that's playing two and
• 38:40
  Speaker 5: a half hours.
• 38:41
Speaker 2: Well, and these kids go to the school, same school bridge.
• 38:46
Speaker 5: Yeah, so I mean you can't there's no rational reasoning
• 38:50
  Speaker 5: behind that whatsoever.
• 38:51
Speaker 4: And I just and and I'm you know, and I've
• 38:54
Speaker 4: talked to some different people. I've been on the phone
• 38:56
Speaker 4: with a couple of different people, and just just to
• 38:59
Speaker 4: be aware, I'm still in dialogue. Okay, I'm not. I'm
• 39:03
Speaker 4: not done with it.
• 39:05
Speaker 2: But I've talked to a number of people who just,
• 39:10
Speaker 2: you know, they say, oh.
• 39:11
Speaker 4: Man, that's wrong, you know, And let's be clear, let's
• 39:15
Speaker 4: give them a benefit of the doubt. So in the
• 39:17
Speaker 4: by laws, what they did, was they put what you
• 39:21
Speaker 4: put is something that is specific to two teams.
• 39:26
Speaker 2: We're grant funded the City of South Charleston. We don't.
• 39:29
Speaker 2: We don't charge our kids all the time. We don't.
• 39:32
Speaker 2: You know, we have we're city funded.
• 39:34
Speaker 4: We have a budget, you know, And I know that's
• 39:39
  Speaker 4: that's that's that's unfortunate for a lot of teams who
• 39:42
Speaker 4: don't have it. And it's a blessing to us, thank
• 39:46
Speaker 4: thank goodness for for our mayor.
• 39:49
  Speaker 6: Okay, and so.
• 39:54
Speaker 4: Having having had that that opportunity right to be city
• 40:01
Speaker 4: funded now works against us because now you put in
• 40:07
Speaker 4: the bylaw that you cannot be city funded.
• 40:10
Speaker 5: I mean, come on, we're the only city funded team
• 40:13
  Speaker 5: around here.
• 40:13
Speaker 4: Charleston goes out and anybody who's tried to write a
• 40:18
  Speaker 4: grant will tell.
• 40:18
Speaker 2: You that ain't easy. That ain't easy. Charleston goes out,
• 40:25
  Speaker 2: gets a grant.
• 40:27
Speaker 4: They're super excited because now they can buy safer helmets,
• 40:31
Speaker 4: safe for shoulder pads, all of that, nice uniforms.
• 40:34
Speaker 2: And in the bylaws you can't be grant funded. So
• 40:42
Speaker 2: is that not targeted?
• 40:44
Speaker 4: And how then do you how then do like communities
• 40:48
Speaker 4: that that have low income parents, how do they afford
• 40:55
Speaker 4: helmets and shoulder pads, cleats and pants and jerseys and
• 40:59
Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff.
• 41:00
  Speaker 2: They can't.
• 41:01
Speaker 5: It's hard to do it at any householder. Yes, you
• 41:04
Speaker 5: know what I mean. So why why would you punish
• 41:07
Speaker 5: a child because he doesn't have to fork out that money?
• 41:10
Speaker 6: It makes no sense to me, you know, I mean, it's.
• 41:12
Speaker 5: Not like we're recruiting kids from out of state because
• 41:15
  Speaker 5: we're a city funded team.
• 41:17
Speaker 6: You know what I mean.
• 41:17
Speaker 5: But if you and you know, as a coach, I
• 41:21
Speaker 5: love I mean, Drawston's okay with me, But as a coach,
• 41:24
Speaker 5: there are rivals, you know what I'm saying.
• 41:26
Speaker 6: So you know, we want to plan.
• 41:27
Speaker 5: But if you look at that team, they have two
• 41:30
Speaker 5: or three different color helmets, you know what I'm saying,
• 41:33
Speaker 5: because they don't have the finances to buy all the
• 41:36
Speaker 5: same helmets. Now, why does it hurt your feelings that
• 41:40
Speaker 5: they got a grant so they can have the same
• 41:42
Speaker 5: color helmets on every kid? Now, don't that keeps you?
• 41:47
  Speaker 4: I'm like you, I don't. I don't want this to
• 41:49
Speaker 4: be like a dig on Charleston. But they they've called,
• 41:54
Speaker 4: they called, we provided shoulder pats, we've provided helmet. Sure,
• 41:59
Speaker 4: why should because we should if we haven't, why shouldn't.
• 42:04
Speaker 7: It comes down safety comes first, and I mean if
• 42:07
Speaker 7: we reach out and help other teams and help other programs,
• 42:10
Speaker 7: or we reach out to help for support, to make
• 42:13
Speaker 7: sure that we are providing safety for the kids first,
• 42:18
Speaker 7: there shouldn't be punished, shouldn't be you know.
• 42:20
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a pray report, you know what I mean.
• 42:24
Speaker 4: Yeah, because I'm thinking, I'm thinking to we're never gonna
• 42:29
Speaker 4: wear those gray pants that we used to wear. No,
• 42:32
Speaker 4: I'm thinking about just getting letting trusting you know, if
• 42:36
Speaker 4: they want them, because we're not using it. And then
• 42:39
Speaker 4: we've got a ton of helmets that you know, we're
• 42:41
Speaker 4: not we're never gonna go back to.
• 42:44
Speaker 2: They can possibly even getting painted if they want it, you.
• 42:48
Speaker 6: Know, still gonna be cheaper, and it's gonna be cheaper.
• 42:50
  Speaker 2: Than buying them.
• 42:51
Speaker 4: So we're set up in a we're set up in
• 42:56
Speaker 4: a system to where we're trying to be helpful to
• 42:59
Speaker 4: program even if we even if we can't beat them.
• 43:03
Speaker 6: Yeah I will one day.
• 43:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, we hopefully we can get there. We can
• 43:08
  Speaker 2: get there.
• 43:08
Speaker 4: We'll get there, but but we want to again when
• 43:13
Speaker 4: we say we're about all the kids, Yeah, we show that. Yeah, absolutely,
• 43:19
Speaker 4: and it doesn't. It's not just draws it. I mean,
• 43:21
Speaker 4: if dun Bar or somebody asked we would try to
• 43:26
Speaker 4: get we would do anything we could to try to
• 43:28
  Speaker 4: help them.
• 43:30
Speaker 2: You know, I think I had something.
• 43:32
Speaker 7: Well, I was gonna say, also it goes into like
• 43:34
Speaker 7: you don't have enough kids, we might be able to
• 43:36
Speaker 7: reach out and you know, send you some kids or
• 43:40
Speaker 7: stuff like that. But you mentioned I was like, I'll
• 43:42
Speaker 7: never forget. You know, we had the issue with my
• 43:44
Speaker 7: son with the helmet and all that stuff, and I
• 43:48
Speaker 7: remember you you are first season. You really made sure
• 43:51
Speaker 7: that safety came first. And some of these teams we
• 43:54
Speaker 7: played that year, you know, sadly, as a parent, I
• 43:58
Speaker 7: looked out there and saw some of these kids, I'm
• 44:00
Speaker 7: not gonna name which teams. They were out there on
• 44:02
Speaker 7: the field with helmets that they look like little bobbleheads
• 44:04
Speaker 7: they weren't even fitting correctly. And being able to have
• 44:08
Speaker 7: that resource to get them stuff the safety equipment properly
• 44:12
Speaker 7: fitted and all that, you know, and if you know,
• 44:16
Speaker 7: reaching out and help one another and stuff like that,
• 44:18
Speaker 7: that's really is a positive thing and shouldn't be frowned upon,
• 44:22
Speaker 7: you know. Voted against you know.
• 44:24
Speaker 4: And and you guys, you guys know, I'll sit. I'll
• 44:27
Speaker 4: sit in the equipment room no matter how hot it
• 44:30
Speaker 4: is or the concession, and I'll fit helmets and shoulder
• 44:33
Speaker 4: pads as long as it takes. And I'm not I'm
• 44:36
Speaker 4: not trying to rush you through. I'm trying to make
• 44:39
Speaker 4: sure that that everything is fitting. And it's what's what's
• 44:42
Speaker 4: what's crazy about that though I've seen a couple of helmets.
• 44:46
Speaker 2: I'm like, gosh, I must have missed that one.
• 44:47
Speaker 4: You know, maybe you but but yeah, I think and
• 44:54
  Speaker 4: and and Fred, that's a that's a valid point. I
• 44:56
Speaker 4: think at the end of the day, youth football has
• 45:02
Speaker 4: to be about it. It has to be about safety,
• 45:05
Speaker 4: and it has to be But before we can get
• 45:08
Speaker 4: to safety, we have to get participation. And the way
• 45:12
Speaker 4: you get participation is you make it as easy as
• 45:15
Speaker 4: possible and you don't have the drama because parents don't
• 45:20
Speaker 4: want They already know they got to bring their kids
• 45:22
Speaker 4: to practice almost every day, they got to take them
• 45:24
Speaker 4: to games every day or on the weekend on a Sunday.
• 45:28
Speaker 4: Don't add any more drama to the mix. Because as
• 45:33
Speaker 4: soon as you start talking about okay, we're not in
• 45:35
  Speaker 4: the league.
• 45:36
Speaker 2: And how many how many times did you hear that
• 45:37
Speaker 2: we were going to have to go three or four hours.
• 45:44
Speaker 7: Flew for two months? Yeah, playing four and a half
• 45:47
Speaker 7: hours every practice going on.
• 45:50
Speaker 4: Yeah, somebody even said, yeah, we were going to practice practice.
• 45:55
Speaker 7: I just to it's still affecting, no, as I just
• 45:58
Speaker 7: recently talked to a parent of a previous player that
• 46:01
Speaker 7: we have not seen and within you know, thirty seconds
• 46:06
Speaker 7: that conversation, that's the first thing it was, is I
• 46:09
  Speaker 7: just I can't I can't travel.
• 46:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I can't travel.
• 46:13
Speaker 7: Here's a very talented kid, you know, has a good
• 46:18
Speaker 7: future in youth football that you know that they really need,
• 46:22
Speaker 7: you know, because some of these you know, these kids
• 46:24
Speaker 7: out there today, they don't have the opportunity, you know,
• 46:28
Speaker 7: and you take somebody that grows, you know, that has
• 46:31
Speaker 7: a family household, that's not right in the valley, that
• 46:34
Speaker 7: could be just outside the valley. The kids don't have
• 46:37
Speaker 7: much of a social life, I hope that's the best
• 46:39
Speaker 7: word I can say, much of a social life. And
• 46:41
Speaker 7: here's a chance that you know, we're providing an easy
• 46:45
Speaker 7: access and then we provide it, but then we get
• 46:48
Speaker 7: have we have to tell them, sorry, you got to
• 46:50
Speaker 7: drive an hour and a half away, you know, stuff
• 46:52
Speaker 7: like that, and that's tough. You know, when things here locally,
• 46:56
Speaker 7: it'd be more easier for these families to get these
• 46:58
Speaker 7: kids to these games and be able to feel numbers
• 47:01
Speaker 7: for because I think we weren't just hurting on that either.
• 47:04
Speaker 7: I heard rumors one of the other teams is hurting,
• 47:07
Speaker 7: you know, because the parents just don't want to drive
• 47:09
Speaker 7: an hour and a half away or not.
• 47:12
Speaker 5: You know, there's several teams that are suffering, and I
• 47:14
Speaker 5: think our our first week of practice showed the consequences
• 47:17
Speaker 5: from it, you know what I mean.
• 47:18
  Speaker 2: And I think I think you're right.
• 47:21
Speaker 4: And I think that everybody, everybody's here in the valley.
• 47:27
Speaker 4: I think everybody's down a little bit regardless of where
• 47:31
Speaker 4: they're going to play. I think Charleston said they may
• 47:33
Speaker 4: have had up ticking up tick in numbers, which I
• 47:38
Speaker 4: would I hopefully they do, you know, I hope that
• 47:42
Speaker 4: Dunbar would have an uptick. I know for us, our
• 47:47
Speaker 4: parents in everything that we do in the city of
• 47:49
Speaker 4: South Charlestan is usually in the City of South Charlestan,
• 47:53
Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, Like you know, we got
• 47:54
Speaker 4: our own basketball league, we got a baseball league, and
• 47:56
Speaker 4: we got our fields and all that and and I'm
• 47:58
Speaker 4: not bragging. I'm making the case that that's a good
• 48:01
Speaker 4: thing for our kids. So now when you start turning
• 48:05
Speaker 4: too just one sport football and you've got to go,
• 48:09
Speaker 4: you know, an hour and a half to a game,
• 48:12
Speaker 4: hour and a half down, hour and a half back
• 48:15
  Speaker 4: and game time.
• 48:17
Speaker 6: And multiple kids on.
• 48:20
Speaker 7: I was up there from what nine thirty to five thirty.
• 48:27
Speaker 6: Iron a half back.
• 48:28
Speaker 7: You figure that that's a game we got. We got
• 48:31
Speaker 7: families out there that have kids on all three teams,
• 48:34
Speaker 7: you know, potentially all three, so they would have to
• 48:36
Speaker 7: be there the same amount of time.
• 48:38
Speaker 4: I'm getting asked almost every day like, you know, what
• 48:41
Speaker 4: are we going to do with the A team?
• 48:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and and.
• 48:45
Speaker 4: One of the you know, one of the comments was,
• 48:48
Speaker 4: you know, don't string us along.
• 48:50
  Speaker 2: I said, I'm not. I'm not.
• 48:51
  Speaker 4: I'm not stringing you along. I don't know when I
• 48:54
Speaker 4: can When do you pull the plug on the kids
• 48:57
Speaker 4: that are out there that are playing. I know that
• 48:59
Speaker 4: the pairents, you know, you got maybe just a kid
• 49:02
Speaker 4: on the A team, then you may not want to
• 49:05
Speaker 4: have them practicing or whatever. And and we've got we've
• 49:09
Speaker 4: got a young one specific young lady that's on our
• 49:13
Speaker 4: a team I think could be so good and and
• 49:20
Speaker 4: I personally feel like, gosh, I wish we could get
• 49:23
Speaker 4: a team so she could play.
• 49:26
Speaker 6: Yeah, we're four kids, shah.
• 49:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, and the potential of them becoming so much better
• 49:32
Speaker 5: is outstanding, is I mean, I get it, you know
• 49:35
Speaker 5: what I mean, We're coming up the week one and
• 49:37
Speaker 5: we still don't have enough. So, I mean I understand
• 49:40
Speaker 5: the parents is frustrations.
• 49:42
Speaker 7: They've given us what six or five weeks now being
• 49:45
  Speaker 7: there on practice.
• 49:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean that is loyalty out there.
• 49:50
Speaker 7: Button still still hasn't pulled the you know frame and
• 49:54
Speaker 7: brought you the helmet, brought you the paths and say
• 49:56
Speaker 7: we're done. Still still staying strong with us. It was
• 50:00
Speaker 7: an awful lot. And like Kender said, four kids, shah,
• 50:04
Speaker 7: for these kids that put it on the work.
• 50:06
Speaker 4: And if you if you're in the city of South Charleston,
• 50:08
Speaker 4: if you're and you're listening to the show, if you know,
• 50:12
Speaker 4: if you know some kids that hadn't actually signed up
• 50:16
Speaker 4: but might be willing to play football, hey, have them
• 50:20
Speaker 4: come to the wreck have them come to the Wreck
• 50:22
  Speaker 4: at any time.
• 50:23
Speaker 2: They could sign up there. Practice will be six to
• 50:26
Speaker 2: eight up at the Rock.
• 50:28
Speaker 4: They can come to the Rock and sign up there,
• 50:31
Speaker 4: and we can take care of the application and get
• 50:33
Speaker 4: it back down to the rec center, get you fitted
• 50:36
Speaker 4: for helmets and shoulder pads and.
• 50:38
Speaker 2: And make a team. Hey, we could, if we could.
• 50:42
Speaker 2: If we can get.
• 50:42
Speaker 5: Twelve, yeah, that's all you need. If we can get.
• 50:45
Speaker 2: Twelve thirteen, maybe I would be happy. Yeah.
• 50:49
Speaker 5: And that's only four kids, yeah, four kids, yes, And
• 50:52
Speaker 5: so fifth and sixth graders.
• 50:54
Speaker 4: If you enjoy the show and you're listening, please please,
• 51:00
Speaker 4: And you live in South Charleston, and I don't even
• 51:03
Speaker 4: make the case if you live anywhere that you haven't
• 51:06
Speaker 4: signed up, and you're in our in our general area,
• 51:11
Speaker 4: we'll take a shot at it. You know what I'm saying.
• 51:13
  Speaker 4: We'll we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll press the league. We'll press
• 51:16
Speaker 4: the league. Like look, this will give us an eighteen ye.
• 51:20
Speaker 4: I don't care how good you are, how we want
• 51:23
Speaker 4: you to out We want you to be.
• 51:24
Speaker 2: Out there to play.
• 51:25
  Speaker 6: Yeah, so.
• 51:29
Speaker 4: Fred you can you got anything else you got to say,
• 51:31
Speaker 4: and we'll get ready to close it up here you
• 51:34
Speaker 4: got anything anything you'd like to say to the parents,
• 51:37
Speaker 4: get off your chest or whatever.
• 51:39
Speaker 7: First off, thank you Carl for having Kinder and I,
• 51:41
Speaker 7: you know, I'll say thank you for Kinder.
• 51:43
Speaker 2: That's right. Yeah, I don't want to hear him.
• 51:46
Speaker 7: Yeah, you know Purple, you know four seasons. Of course,
• 51:51
Speaker 7: this season, I'm allowed to say nothing about the Vikings,
• 51:54
Speaker 7: but uh maybe next season I might switched up.
• 51:57
Speaker 2: So you just put yourself on a long lift with
• 52:00
  Speaker 2: you come back.
• 52:03
Speaker 7: But uh, one, I like to thank our community for
• 52:06
Speaker 7: reaching out and supporting us. You know, that's one of
• 52:08
Speaker 7: the biggest things, and all communities out there, I want
• 52:11
Speaker 7: to say that too. You know, if you're listening, if
• 52:13
Speaker 7: you don't have a kid that's in sports out there,
• 52:16
Speaker 7: you can still reach out and support them by you know,
• 52:19
Speaker 7: maybe reaching out and asking when our schedules are, you know,
• 52:22
Speaker 7: and you know, go into a game or two. You know,
• 52:24
Speaker 7: it's just you know, help support these programs, you know,
• 52:28
Speaker 7: because you know, you know these programs. You know, we
• 52:32
Speaker 7: need football to continue, we need support to continue. So one,
• 52:35
Speaker 7: I like to say thank you to all of you know,
• 52:37
Speaker 7: people out there supporting our city and everything. Parents out there,
• 52:42
Speaker 7: you know, thank you you know, for allowing us to
• 52:45
Speaker 7: give your kids an opportunity to go out there and
• 52:46
Speaker 7: play football. You know, thank you for allowing us to
• 52:50
Speaker 7: coach with kids and all that stuff. And you know,
• 52:53
Speaker 7: we're going to do all we can for them and
• 52:55
Speaker 7: be there for them. And you know, and we look,
• 52:58
Speaker 7: you know, we're looking, and we got a game coming
• 53:00
Speaker 7: up Sunday. Let's go out there and you know this,
• 53:02
Speaker 7: play some football Sunday. So game time, Yeah, game time Sunday.
• 53:09
  Speaker 6: You got.
• 53:10
Speaker 5: Well, I just would like to say, uh, you know,
• 53:13
Speaker 5: we need to go back to taking the pride that comes.
• 53:16
  Speaker 6: With your communities.
• 53:19
Speaker 5: Uh you know, I mean, take, for instance, you know,
• 53:22
Speaker 5: South Charleston is where we started. We lived in South
• 53:25
Speaker 5: Charleston five years ago and we came and played for
• 53:28
Speaker 5: South Charleston Football and we eventually bought our house, thank
• 53:34
Speaker 5: god that we were able to do, and we moved
• 53:36
Speaker 5: across lanes and we still have the pride of South
• 53:40
  Speaker 5: Charleston football.
• 53:41
Speaker 6: It's where we started, it's where we're born, you know,
• 53:44
  Speaker 6: where we.
• 53:44
Speaker 7: Played, not just one kid, multiple kids.
• 53:47
Speaker 5: And the thing of it is that people don't take
• 53:49
Speaker 5: pride in where they live anymore. It's les let's run
• 53:53
Speaker 5: to the easiest situation that we got, the best chance
• 53:55
Speaker 5: for us to win a football game. Let's run there,
• 53:58
Speaker 5: take our kid there. I think the youth sports needs
• 54:01
Speaker 5: to get away from that, and it starts with the parents.
• 54:03
Speaker 5: So I just asked that the parents, you know, look
• 54:06
Speaker 5: into that and give some pride to your community, you know.
• 54:09
Speaker 6: So that's all I got, and I appreciate you having
• 54:11
  Speaker 6: me on.
• 54:11
Speaker 2: Here go Packers. That'll kill you from the next time.
• 54:17
Speaker 7: I'm staying out of this title. I'm not in this
• 54:21
  Speaker 7: out there.
• 54:21
Speaker 2: I'll close it. I'll close out by saying, like.
• 54:27
Speaker 4: I just wish we could find a way that youth
• 54:29
Speaker 4: football could be about the youth having fun, amen, and
• 54:34
Speaker 4: not necessarily who's winning. Somebody's gonna win, There's no question
• 54:37
Speaker 4: about that. Somebody's gonna win. But I think that where
• 54:42
Speaker 4: we need to be is we need to enjoy the
• 54:45
Speaker 4: opportunity for the kids to be out on the field
• 54:50
Speaker 4: and just having fun.
• 54:53
Speaker 2: Let the coaches coach.
• 54:56
Speaker 4: And I think that if we do that, Like, I
• 54:59
Speaker 4: just really truly think that if we do that, it
• 55:03
Speaker 4: would just get better we as the adults. When you
• 55:07
Speaker 4: start to do something that you think is going to
• 55:10
Speaker 4: benefit you, your child or your team.
• 55:16
  Speaker 2: You're dead wrong.
• 55:20
  Speaker 1: You.
• 55:21
Speaker 4: The role we have as the adults is to teach teamwork.
• 55:26
Speaker 4: And the only way we can teach teamwork is we
• 55:29
Speaker 4: have to be about our entire team, yes, not our
• 55:33
  Speaker 4: particular kid.
• 55:35
  Speaker 2: That doesn't work. I've never had I've never had a.
• 55:38
Speaker 4: Child anywhere remotely close to being part of the football.
• 55:42
Speaker 2: Program at all. But I have seen I have seen
• 55:49
  Speaker 2: kids give up.
• 55:52
Speaker 4: I can see I've seen parents walk away, you know,
• 55:57
  Speaker 4: take their kids away, and I can't. I can't fite
• 56:00
Speaker 4: you in that situation. But I'm just telling you that,
• 56:05
Speaker 4: in this situation, creating this positive environment that is called
• 56:10
Speaker 4: football and team and work ethic, I think you are
• 56:15
Speaker 4: building something with your.
• 56:16
Speaker 6: Child and I agree with that one hundred percent.
• 56:19
  Speaker 2: So that's that's that's that's all I got.
• 56:24
Speaker 4: And gentlemen, I do appreciate I do appreciate you all
• 56:27
Speaker 4: coming here and taking your time out and having a
