- 8:32Speaker 6: he collaborates with Pile Dave on that song and talking
- 8:37Speaker 6: about collaborations, rolled me up some Carnodola and rolled me
- 8:44Speaker 6: up some one Republic. The song is called tell Me
- 8:49Speaker 6: Really one of the highlights of the collaborative world last
- 8:51Speaker 6: year in our space.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Here's the song you go.
- 8:59Speaker 12: That's the Jenny DJ he Got le me j l
- 9:03Speaker 12: get Ban that's the hor J Pauling get band.
- 9:09Speaker 1: That's I see card. The long ye Charling.
- 9:14Speaker 5: That's I'm not trying to say, you're trying to tell
- 9:17Speaker 5: you what it is. I want to give you everything
- 9:19Speaker 5: that don't be on events.
- 9:20Speaker 4: I listen to the King Carl the money, now the key,
- 9:30Speaker 4: that's Harlan, you John, that's the.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Day, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, Carmela,
- 9:53Speaker 3: just kill me so you gotta god gard tell me.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You gotta go that tell me.
- 10:07Speaker 13: Terrible gaps about in Hearty Karada. He does the Reconnamanda Sarama,
- 10:16Speaker 13: he does Menura Corakadi, many a man Data a securityary
- 10:23Speaker 13: Lord Manday Marie who is Akada.
- 10:29Speaker 1: The theory high.
- 10:31Speaker 5: That's the day that today me jell me, tell me.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Say you got Amana, just give me so you gotta girl,
- 10:57Speaker 1: gona tell me.
- 11:01Speaker 14: So you've gotta tell.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Me so you've gotta go. Gotta tell me. Yeah, a
- 11:34Speaker 1: big collaboration there. It was a great song.
- 11:37Speaker 6: You know a lot of these collaborations, most of them,
- 11:40Speaker 6: I would say, in a very controversial statement here don't
- 11:44Speaker 6: do very well. And it's really until both artists participate
- 11:49Speaker 6: evenly in a social way to promote the song does
- 11:52Speaker 6: the song really work. And in most cases, the Western
- 11:56Speaker 6: artists right now are not reciprocating its main the Indian
- 12:01Speaker 6: artist doing all the projection of the song. So that's
- 12:04Speaker 6: why some of these songs don't make it to the mainstream.
- 12:07Speaker 6: See what happens here going forward as more of the
- 12:09Speaker 6: stuff happens. Now, let's bring in Doctor Roy to the party.
- 12:12Speaker 6: What's up Doctor Roy?
- 12:14Speaker 15: Hey guys, this is.
- 12:15Speaker 16: Doctor Roy with today's word on the avenue. In Film
- 12:18Speaker 16: and TV News, at Cinema Con twenty twenty six in
- 12:21Speaker 16: Las Vegas, Vitio Jamwaal created a striking moment by chanting
- 12:24Speaker 16: the guy Thri Mantra during the unveiling of Street Fighter.
- 12:28Speaker 16: The unexpected gesture resonated globally, with many praising the blend
- 12:31Speaker 16: of Indian spirituality and mainstream Hollywood spectacle. In media news,
- 12:37Speaker 16: at a New York red carpet event, Nita Buddy turned
- 12:40Speaker 16: heads not with trends but with tradition, wearing a beautifully
- 12:44Speaker 16: crafted JOm dannisari that took nearly two years to weave.
- 12:48Speaker 16: Created in Fulia by Budmasha Wardi barn Gumar Bassak and
- 12:52Speaker 16: presented through swathees, the piece reimagined the classical weave with
- 12:56Speaker 16: intricate narrative motifs, sparking the conversation about Haire reinvention and
- 13:01Speaker 16: the evolving identity of Indian textiles on a global stage
- 13:06Speaker 16: and event news. Indian American philanthropists Vija Rama Christian and
- 13:10Speaker 16: Bravina Rama Christian have pledged three million dollars to Duke University,
- 13:14Speaker 16: advancing radiology, innovation and medical training. Their contribution reflects a
- 13:19Speaker 16: larger trend with diaspora giving now surpassing five billion dollars annually,
- 13:24Speaker 16: underscoring the growing global impact of Indian origin communities. That's
- 13:28Speaker 16: it for today's Word on the Avenue until next time.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Thanks so much, doctor Roy. Thank you very much for
- 13:33Speaker 1: the daily Word on the Avenue.
- 13:35Speaker 9: Here.
- 13:36Speaker 6: This song that's playing underneath Me is something that you
- 13:39Speaker 6: will recognize immediately from its baseline, and the song itself
- 13:44Speaker 6: was an iconic moment of the film American Basi. This
- 13:48Speaker 6: week we turn our attention to the film. Let's pay
- 13:52Speaker 6: a little attention to the music.
- 13:53Speaker 17: Here.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Here's av jess Akoi.
- 14:15Speaker 18: Just suppose leave me eyes go both, Bunjack Bunjian, just
- 14:29Speaker 18: suppoy me begive me eyes go both, Bunchi Giant Baha Jumper,
- 14:47Speaker 18: Go Comma g Sa go Jun com me then got
- 14:55Speaker 18: shot twelve.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Suck is not coming.
- 15:01Speaker 8: Buncho John just a boy babes sleive.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Me the eyes.
- 15:15Speaker 19: But John J.
- 15:31Speaker 18: Wrior just a toy.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Bas sive me the eyes.
- 15:45Speaker 18: BoJack song Fish does.
- 16:10Speaker 1: It's a classic, no other way to wrap it up,
- 16:13Speaker 1: you know what I mean. It's from the movie Kurbani.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Photos Khan Vin Old Khanna, a great film that was
- 16:22Speaker 6: of course seen at them on and the song featuring
- 16:26Speaker 6: the vocals of Nausea, Hassan and folks. Let's bring in
- 16:31Speaker 6: sungjt Da Silva into the episode right now, one of
- 16:34Speaker 6: the actors from American Dacy, and really American Dacy was
- 16:37Speaker 6: this first feature film. But of all the actors in
- 16:41Speaker 6: the crew there, I think he was probably the most
- 16:43Speaker 6: that was involved in theater out of everyone, I would say,
- 16:46Speaker 6: and worked in the Tony Award winning show called Warhorse,
- 16:50Speaker 6: you know, and then did some work off Broadway even
- 16:53Speaker 6: and did some stuff alongside in TV and so many
- 16:56Speaker 6: different places like The Good Wife and Anna and Evil
- 17:00Speaker 6: and so many great shows like that. And so it's
- 17:02Speaker 6: really a cool pleasure of mind to invite Sujet da
- 17:06Speaker 6: Silva to the show. What's up, Sunjet, how you doing brother.
- 17:10Speaker 17: Yeah, I'm good man, I'm good. It's it's so great
- 17:12Speaker 17: to be here. I'm actually in La and and last
- 17:15Speaker 17: night Hayman, Chundu and Rakesh got together at a at
- 17:20Speaker 17: a Mexican restaurant, had margaritas and reminisced about American basingh
- 17:26Speaker 17: twenty five years, just like that Sunday five years.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Yeah, how would you summarize this twenty five years?
- 17:35Speaker 1: When it comes to the legacy of this film.
- 17:38Speaker 17: It's kind of mind blowing, you know. When we did it,
- 17:43Speaker 17: you know, that was my first on camera job. I
- 17:46Speaker 17: was just amazed that there was this movie about South
- 17:50Speaker 17: Asian made by South Asian. And I didn't think anything.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Of me, but I was just like, I'm glad to
- 17:57Speaker 2: be on camera.
- 17:57Speaker 17: I'm I was glad to be acting, to get my
- 18:00Speaker 17: first gig, you know. And I don't think any of
- 18:04Speaker 17: us I had any idea of the kind of impact
- 18:08Speaker 17: it would have on our community. And honestly, you know,
- 18:14Speaker 17: this year, on the anniversary year, is when I have
- 18:17Speaker 17: started to even understand it even more because that generation
- 18:21Speaker 17: who grew up with it. I'm friends with a lot
- 18:24Speaker 17: of them and they have told me, like I used
- 18:27Speaker 17: to watch that movie every week in college. I saw
- 18:30Speaker 17: myself and I actually for the screening, I had a
- 18:34Speaker 17: good friend of mine I become friends with. She came
- 18:37Speaker 17: with me to the screening and it was amazing because
- 18:39Speaker 17: I got to rewatch the movie through her eyes and
- 18:44Speaker 17: how important it was for her and so and the
- 18:47Speaker 17: actually reunion day was amazing that most of the cast
- 18:50Speaker 17: was able to be there. We all were just like
- 18:52Speaker 17: hugging and celebrating, and I have a whole new appreciation
- 18:56Speaker 17: of how much it meant, you know, for they sees
- 19:00Speaker 17: to actually see themselves represented, and that it's carried on.
- 19:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 19:04Speaker 17: I've told me like South Asian actors who are like man,
- 19:07Speaker 17: I saw this movie was so impactful for me, you know,
- 19:11Speaker 17: and so to look back has been a gift that
- 19:16Speaker 17: I that I had never expected to understand in a
- 19:19Speaker 17: new way. And to see it from people who watched
- 19:23Speaker 17: it ben who have now grown up and have careers
- 19:25Speaker 17: in the arts. Yeah, yeah, So it's been really amazing.
- 19:30Speaker 17: And reconnect with everybody too, you know, because I'm still
- 19:32Speaker 17: friends with so many of the cast.
- 19:36Speaker 1: It really is. I'm sure it feels like a family
- 19:39Speaker 1: to a certain extent. And anytime you guys get together
- 19:42Speaker 1: like this.
- 19:42Speaker 6: It's a family reunion twenty five years down the line,
- 19:45Speaker 6: and you know, you touched on something really interesting. And
- 19:49Speaker 6: I've been speaking to so many of the other cast
- 19:52Speaker 6: members throughout the week, and one common threat that I've
- 19:56Speaker 6: found in all the discussions has been just everybody really
- 20:00Speaker 6: marveling at how much everybody individually has gone on to accomplish,
- 20:04Speaker 6: including yourself. You've had such a deep career in theater,
- 20:08Speaker 6: You've done so much work behind the camera, the Spike
- 20:11Speaker 6: Lee's of the world to you know, you know, founding
- 20:16Speaker 6: a collective for South Asian South Asians in theater. You
- 20:20Speaker 6: I mean, just would you have ever thought that so
- 20:24Speaker 6: much progress in our space would occur in these twenty
- 20:27Speaker 6: five years like this.
- 20:29Speaker 17: You know, there has been tremendous progress, and it's amazing
- 20:34Speaker 17: to see how many other day SI's are out here
- 20:38Speaker 17: and people are, oh, I don't know that, I don't
- 20:40Speaker 17: know that person, you know, whereas before it was just
- 20:42Speaker 17: a small circle and has been amazing.
- 20:45Speaker 2: But I do have to say I.
- 20:49Speaker 17: Am surprised that we haven't made more progress.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Yeah, to be honest, Yeah, I thought, you know, like
- 20:56Speaker 2: I was.
- 20:56Speaker 17: Watching American Dacy again and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 21:00Speaker 17: so many different people are represented up on the screen.
- 21:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:05Speaker 17: There's so many religions, so many different kinds of basis
- 21:09Speaker 17: on the screen. And now I haven't seen a movie
- 21:11Speaker 17: like that symp them that has that many perspectives in
- 21:14Speaker 17: the same movie. And I kind of was like, wow,
- 21:19Speaker 17: you know, so I feel like, even though we've made
- 21:23Speaker 17: so much progress, I still feel like there's so much
- 21:27Speaker 17: more to go, you know. And it was a good
- 21:31Speaker 17: reminder that we have to keep making our own stories.
- 21:35Speaker 15: We have to keep investing in the storytellers, the producers
- 21:39Speaker 15: and directors, because it's the people behind the scenes creating
- 21:43Speaker 15: that need to keep getting the opportunities to make these stories,
- 21:46Speaker 15: you know.
- 21:48Speaker 2: And so it's a mix of like proud of what
- 21:51Speaker 2: was accomplished, but knowing that there's still a lot to them.
- 21:55Speaker 6: I'm nodding here very aggressively because what you're saying is
- 22:01Speaker 6: so true. The infrastructure has to continue to evolve and
- 22:05Speaker 6: there needs to be more support in this space.
- 22:07Speaker 1: For sure.
- 22:08Speaker 6: The audience is definitely there. Here we are talking about
- 22:11Speaker 6: a film about our story and our condition in the
- 22:13Speaker 6: diaspora twenty five years later, and also talking about how
- 22:17Speaker 6: little of it has been contextualized since then, you know,
- 22:20Speaker 6: and that's really interesting. And so you know, you look
- 22:24Speaker 6: at Giteeshu as the producer, and then you have Byush
- 22:27Speaker 6: Pandia who was the director of the film, and you
- 22:31Speaker 6: look back and say, wow, what a courageous act twenty
- 22:34Speaker 6: five years ago, devoid of social media and all these
- 22:36Speaker 6: different places, to go about aggregating so many amazing people
- 22:40Speaker 6: in one place and congregating them into a mission like this.
- 22:43Speaker 6: What an accomplishment from Beusche. And you know, as someone yourself,
- 22:48Speaker 6: like yourself that has worked behind the scenes on projects
- 22:51Speaker 6: like this, man, let's talk about you know how this
- 22:56Speaker 6: film came together from that perspective and maybe pure some
- 23:00Speaker 6: flowers here, What an accomplishment for somebody like that such
- 23:03Speaker 6: a long time ago to have the vision in the
- 23:05Speaker 6: foresight to make a film like this.
- 23:07Speaker 17: You know, I guess at the time I didn't even
- 23:10Speaker 17: I didn't even think about it that way, you know,
- 23:12Speaker 17: I was just like, oh, there's a movie, all right.
- 23:15Speaker 2: But looking back at it now and we did.
- 23:18Speaker 17: This talkback after this, meaning I actually had this revelation
- 23:23Speaker 17: how much of my life I have gained from this movie?
- 23:27Speaker 2: Right? Because it was my first film. And in that film, Samiel.
- 23:32Speaker 17: Mahotra and I, who played Chundu, we met, we became,
- 23:37Speaker 17: we became best friend. He ended up being the person
- 23:43Speaker 17: who introduced me to my wife.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Wow that Yeah, you can't make this stuff up. It's
- 23:50Speaker 1: just incredible.
- 23:51Speaker 2: You you can't. Yeah, you can't, you know. And we've
- 23:54Speaker 2: remained great friends. And now you know, my.
- 23:58Speaker 17: Son is here at at USC and and to Del's
- 24:02Speaker 17: wife actually went to the USC and she helped us
- 24:05Speaker 17: with the applications and and and college stuff and like
- 24:08Speaker 17: there it's been like so much of my life as like, uh,
- 24:14Speaker 17: from that and if you should reminded me, ask you.
- 24:16Speaker 17: My wife actually auditioned for a baby and so I
- 24:21Speaker 17: was destined to me her.
- 24:22Speaker 2: At some point.
- 24:22Speaker 17: But but and then Torva and I have done plays
- 24:26Speaker 17: together and then call and I did the workshop like
- 24:29Speaker 17: a couple of months ago, and you know, it's just
- 24:32Speaker 17: it's amazing that it was a film he was making
- 24:36Speaker 17: because he felt the story wasn't being told and what
- 24:41Speaker 17: he created wasn't.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Just a film.
- 24:43Speaker 17: What you created was a community, a whole community, uh,
- 24:48Speaker 17: of the of the actors themselves, but of the audience
- 24:52Speaker 17: that that grew up with it, and that, to me
- 24:56Speaker 17: is the greatest accomplishment you know of this film that
- 25:01Speaker 17: grew community right, and and that's a that's a cultural change.
- 25:05Speaker 17: It's one thing to have a movie that's great, but
- 25:07Speaker 17: when a movie actually creates the community around it, you
- 25:10Speaker 17: have a laughing change in society.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And that's that's that's pretty darn impressive.

- 26:16Speaker 21: I'm must looking at you sidewise sideways, Sidi almost looking
- 26:24Speaker 21: at you silence sids Yeah, still must be up.
- 26:34Speaker 5: To suse me of like you do.

- 27:10Speaker 11: lets to my.
- 27:12Speaker 21: Harmos looking at you sidwise sidewise, sideways, Amos looking at
- 27:20Speaker 21: you silence sidwis Yeah, it.
- 27:27Speaker 11: Hurts me to watch you late and it hurts me
- 27:31Speaker 11: to watch you sif had a lord it's going on bait,
- 27:37Speaker 11: but I just want to stay sideways. I must look
- 27:41Speaker 11: into your side where's face the face while your lips
- 27:45Speaker 11: some mike had a LEX.
- 27:47Speaker 1: On the pillow case sideways.
- 27:50Speaker 5: They didn't know where your love line lets tomorrow.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Harmos looking at you.
- 27:56Speaker 21: Sidewise, sidewise, sadway, I'm just looking at it. Sid said.
- 28:05Speaker 12: Yeah, let s.
- 28:33Speaker 6: All right, folks, we've done it. We've got our man
- 28:36Speaker 6: on the phone here and listen. I know aneil you
- 28:39Speaker 6: are known as the villain in this movie. Yeah, I
- 28:42Speaker 6: can't disagree with that summation of you being a general
- 28:46Speaker 6: great guy.
- 28:47Speaker 1: But uh, it's been twenty five years. How does it feel?
- 28:51Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 28:51Speaker 19: Wow, still feel like the same guy. It's just that
- 28:55Speaker 19: the body his aged. I look at my stif in
- 28:58Speaker 19: the mirror, like if I don't look at myself in
- 28:59Speaker 19: the miror, I still feel.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Like that, like, you know, for a mid twenty year
- 29:02Speaker 2: old guy that's doing his thing. But but you know,
- 29:06Speaker 2: the body as you get older, start to age a
- 29:08Speaker 2: little bit.
- 29:08Speaker 19: But you know what I mean, I think it's I mean,
- 29:11Speaker 19: I feel amazing. It's what's really fun is to really
- 29:15Speaker 19: kind of bear witness to the to the impact that
- 29:18Speaker 19: this film has made, and you sort of like go
- 29:20Speaker 19: through your life and you know, you go on with things,
- 29:23Speaker 19: and you don't really realize after so much time how
- 29:28Speaker 19: much of an impact this film really made.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Right socially and also from a professional level.
- 29:35Speaker 6: I think both of those areas this film was equally impactful.
- 29:40Speaker 6: Not only did you start to see the beginnings of
- 29:42Speaker 6: what was the storytelling from a very diaspora perspective, and
- 29:46Speaker 6: you start to see that come forward, but then you
- 29:47Speaker 6: start to see these amazing actors that came from this
- 29:51Speaker 6: film and went on to you know, do amazing things.
- 29:54Speaker 6: And so the impact of this was pretty wide. Tell
- 29:57Speaker 6: me about what, you know, twenty five years later, you
- 30:00Speaker 6: you look back on this now, you you measure the
- 30:02Speaker 6: impact of the film more of a professional perspective and
- 30:06Speaker 6: what this film really meant. Yeah, you know, how did
- 30:09Speaker 6: you put that into words?
- 30:10Speaker 19: Yeah, you know, that's a great question. And I think
- 30:15Speaker 19: one of the things that it was like at the
- 30:17Speaker 19: beginning back then, there were so kind of few of
- 30:21Speaker 19: us out there.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I mean yeah, I mean, I.
- 30:22Speaker 19: Mean there there, there, There weren't we were there, There
- 30:26Speaker 19: were lots of us there, but we weren't. We didn't
- 30:28Speaker 19: really have a voice, We didn't really.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Have a place.
- 30:32Speaker 9: You know.
- 30:32Speaker 19: There was the the you know, casting and you know,
- 30:36Speaker 19: the It was just such a narrow field of parts
- 30:39Speaker 19: that were available on a larger scale, right like, we
- 30:43Speaker 19: can go and do theater all we want, you know,
- 30:44Speaker 19: and you know downtown and whatever, which we did, uh
- 30:47Speaker 19: to kind of show our voices. But in terms of
- 30:49Speaker 19: film and television, there was you know, unless you're a
- 30:52Speaker 19: cab driver or corner shop guy, there were really no
- 30:55Speaker 19: roll streets about you know, twenty thirty years ago. And
- 30:59Speaker 19: then you get guys like and and and we've got
- 31:01Speaker 19: to give respect to the guys that were out there
- 31:03Speaker 19: like even before us.
- 31:04Speaker 2: You know, the guys like you know a Day Naidu
- 31:07Speaker 2: that was out there doing doing his thing in New
- 31:09Speaker 2: York and you know, uh.
- 31:11Speaker 19: Uh Angel Nigum that was out there doing his thing.
- 31:14Speaker 19: A guy's like Bernie White that were like even years
- 31:17Speaker 19: before us that, you know, I just can't imagine what
- 31:19Speaker 19: it was like for those guys. But what you know,
- 31:21Speaker 19: in terms of the film's impact, what it did really
- 31:25Speaker 19: was it started to kind of you know, tap at
- 31:28Speaker 19: that glass ceiling. It started to open the envelope just
- 31:32Speaker 19: a little bit wider to show American audiences that, like,
- 31:36Speaker 19: you know, not everybody has a you know, has an
- 31:39Speaker 19: accent like the stories. The thing about it is that
- 31:42Speaker 19: the story was a familiar story.
- 31:44Speaker 1: There's a romantic.
- 31:45Speaker 19: Comedy, boy meets girls. Like everybody when you when you
- 31:48Speaker 19: get down to it, you know the truth of what
- 31:52Speaker 19: it is. It's a romantic comedy. It's it's a story
- 31:55Speaker 19: about love, it's a story about rivalry, it's a it's
- 31:57Speaker 19: a human story just told through the lens of a
- 32:01Speaker 19: bunch of brown people, and that people saw that and
- 32:04Speaker 19: that and that, and then this is one of the
- 32:06Speaker 19: first films, if not the first film.
- 32:08Speaker 2: To really do that.
- 32:09Speaker 19: I mean that was the impact that it was really
- 32:11Speaker 19: the vanguard of all this, because if American dacy didn't exist,
- 32:15Speaker 19: there are so many.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Other things that wouldn't exist too.
- 32:18Speaker 19: I agree with that, you know, the opportunities and things,
- 32:22Speaker 19: so there there there, you know, there would be no
- 32:24Speaker 19: crazy rich Asians if there wasn't an American dacy first.
- 32:27Speaker 2: And I'm going on records.
- 32:29Speaker 6: Saying that I agree with you, and which is why
- 32:32Speaker 6: were we are, you know, giving such platform to this
- 32:36Speaker 6: film because of its importance, and I think the impact
- 32:38Speaker 6: has to be really recognized for sure.
- 32:40Speaker 2: And yeah, definitely, yeah absolutely.
- 32:42Speaker 6: You know, on this note, you look at folks like Bush,
- 32:46Speaker 6: who you know, was imagining things that we probably at
- 32:50Speaker 6: the time were like, what are you doing here?
- 32:51Speaker 1: This is crazy an Indian movie like.
- 32:53Speaker 6: This about our you know, and and now looking back
- 32:56Speaker 6: on it, you you start to realize what the impact
- 33:00Speaker 6: that he made, you know, give take me back to
- 33:03Speaker 6: the moment. When did this film come to you? How
- 33:07Speaker 6: did it come to you? What was your first reaction
- 33:10Speaker 6: to the role that you'd be playing.
- 33:12Speaker 19: Well, you know, I have to say that it's on
- 33:15Speaker 19: a couple of different levels that it was you know
- 33:18Speaker 19: that it affected me, you know, both personally and professionally.
- 33:22Speaker 19: When I first got the script, I was like, wait,
- 33:26Speaker 19: what is this? It read like, I'm like, what is
- 33:31Speaker 19: really going It was such a I don't know, it
- 33:35Speaker 19: was I first never read a script that was stilled
- 33:37Speaker 19: with so many Indian people, right, that was you know, yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 19: and what and what it was? It was really it
- 33:44Speaker 19: was so exciting because it's the first time that I
- 33:49Speaker 19: had done any film or television. Is also very very
- 33:52Speaker 19: early in my career. But that it was that I
- 33:54Speaker 19: was surrounded by people that looked like me.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Right, you know, I'm.
- 34:00Speaker 19: Surrounding I'm sitting in a room, I'm sitting even in
- 34:03Speaker 19: the audition space of people that look like me, a
- 34:05Speaker 19: brown guys going out for these roles, and I'm like,
- 34:07Speaker 19: where did you come from?
- 34:09Speaker 2: I didn't need to know you existed.
- 34:10Speaker 19: So not only did it create like this sense of
- 34:14Speaker 19: uh uh, you know, it was personal sort of like
- 34:17Speaker 19: validation in terms of like, oh my god, I'm not
- 34:19Speaker 19: the only Indian guy out here. Trying to do this.
- 34:22Speaker 19: There is a community of people. And what it did
- 34:24Speaker 19: was start to build a community of people and artists
- 34:30Speaker 19: that I'm like, oh god, I'm not alone out here
- 34:33Speaker 19: doing it. Yeah, and it really so you know, when
- 34:37Speaker 19: I read it, I was just I was absolutely you know,
- 34:39Speaker 19: I was absolutely thrilled.
- 34:41Speaker 2: And the and the idea of like, you know, of
- 34:44Speaker 2: playing the villain.
- 34:45Speaker 19: I mean, I love playing a villain because you know,
- 34:48Speaker 19: if you get to know me, and you know me
- 34:50Speaker 19: by now, you know, I'm a freaking goofball. So when
- 34:53Speaker 19: I walked in the room and I like, I just
- 34:55Speaker 19: be like a bad ass, beat people up the stuff,
- 34:58Speaker 19: it's really kind of so not who I am. So yeah,
- 35:04Speaker 19: I mean it was, it was really it was thrilling
- 35:06Speaker 19: to get it. It was you know, it was thrilling
- 35:07Speaker 19: to be a part of it. And but but none
- 35:10Speaker 19: of us could have known, you know, at that time,
- 35:13Speaker 19: how far reaching and how successful.
- 35:15Speaker 2: It would be.
- 35:16Speaker 6: Thank you for joining us today. First of all, thank
- 35:19Speaker 6: you for sharing this really interesting vantage point on this
- 35:22Speaker 6: cult classic as we'd like to call it here on
- 35:24Speaker 6: the air. And and and again, thank you for your
- 35:28Speaker 6: contribution to now what is this classic film in our community?
- 35:32Speaker 1: And uh and and and as our friend here on
- 35:35Speaker 1: the show, wish you continued success, my brother.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Thank you, my brother. I really do appreciate it.
- 35:40Speaker 19: And if there's a message to send out to any
- 35:42Speaker 19: of the young artists that might be out there listening
- 35:45Speaker 19: and and and and trying to find their voice, I just.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Tell your story.
- 35:50Speaker 19: Be honest, be ruthless, be ruthlessly honest with yourself, and
- 35:54Speaker 19: go out there and make art. Just do it with
- 35:58Speaker 19: with reckless abandon because there is a place for you.
- 36:02Speaker 19: We're waiting for you.
- 36:03Speaker 1: That's awesome. Thank you, Neil, thanks, thank you very much

- 39:28Speaker 6: and folks and joined me and inviting in Snilmo Wholtra
- 39:32Speaker 6: to the show.
- 39:33Speaker 1: How are you, smil very very good?
- 39:35Speaker 2: What's up?
- 39:36Speaker 1: Ah? You know that today has been a great show.
- 39:39Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 39:40Speaker 6: And of course to follow you up now having talked
- 39:43Speaker 6: to the other two bad guys, it only makes sense
- 39:46Speaker 6: the three Gunda in the house.
- 39:50Speaker 2: That's right. We're a bunch of troublemakers. Yeah, back then
- 39:53Speaker 2: and today?
- 39:53Speaker 1: Yeah for sure, man, for sure.
- 39:55Speaker 6: Well listen, you know twenty five years we've been, you know,
- 39:59Speaker 6: just trying to put this film into context for everybody
- 40:03Speaker 6: that's that's not only familiar with the film, but the
- 40:06Speaker 6: very few that are catching up with it now. If
- 40:08Speaker 6: there are any out there, and you know, of course
- 40:10Speaker 6: your role is playing Chundhu and and everything that you
- 40:13Speaker 6: did in the film, you know, thinking back twenty five
- 40:17Speaker 6: years later, tell us about the moment you found out
- 40:19Speaker 6: about the film and and everything since then about it.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Well, so, and I have to say, I have to
- 40:25Speaker 2: give you, I have to give you a problem. I
- 40:27Speaker 2: have to congratulate you. I'm getting my character name right.
- 40:32Speaker 2: And this has been an ongoing joke for twenty five years.
- 40:36Speaker 2: So if you look on the credit, sunj Da Silva
- 40:43Speaker 2: and I are swapped in terms of our character name.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I played Chundhu and he played ham On. But in
- 40:53Speaker 2: the credit it's actually and then on IMDb, which is
- 40:58Speaker 2: like a for those who don't know, it's website that
- 41:01Speaker 2: category that catalogs all of the you know, projects and
- 41:05Speaker 2: roles that anyone in the industry has been associated with,
- 41:11Speaker 2: I'm also miscredited. That comes from the producer.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Hey, so I'll be talking about this week. Maybe we
- 41:19Speaker 1: fixed this right away, you know.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Five this wrang so like and even in the twenty
- 41:28Speaker 2: fifth anniversary like materials, I was like, oh yeah, this
- 41:33Speaker 2: is such a great thing. And you know, I wrote
- 41:35Speaker 2: in a little thing saying hey, this is so great,
- 41:37Speaker 2: and like also we got to think to it, so
- 41:38Speaker 2: this would be a good time to correct and it
- 41:40Speaker 2: never got direct. I was like, okay, that's that's just hilarious.
- 41:43Speaker 2: So and this is the story. This is for all
- 41:46Speaker 2: you fans to know the behind the scenes moments of
- 41:49Speaker 2: what happened. So nineteen ninety nine, we're at our first
- 41:53Speaker 2: read through, and you know, I didn't know that so
- 42:00Speaker 2: many of these people would be like lifelong friends at
- 42:05Speaker 2: the time, right, we were all grappy actors, and I
- 42:09Speaker 2: really like, we're gonna, We're gonna. There was like love
- 42:13Speaker 2: and a lot of competition, and so they were like, okay,
- 42:18Speaker 2: you guys, you and Sonta, you're playing hang up in Chundu.
- 42:22Speaker 2: That's how they said it. And so we were like
- 42:27Speaker 2: what what are we and and we were like those
- 42:34Speaker 2: who the hell are we? So then we were like okay.
- 42:37Speaker 2: So then there was I think chund had had a
- 42:41Speaker 2: line or a moment that was like in the script
- 42:45Speaker 2: that was especially like interesting or funny or something something
- 42:50Speaker 2: about it. There was something in there, and so there
- 42:54Speaker 2: was a twinkle in both of our eyes where we're like, uh,
- 42:58Speaker 2: I mean they didn't say so I'm to do it.
- 43:00Speaker 2: So then we did this thing where it was like
- 43:02Speaker 2: I said, and I was like, you know what, I'll
- 43:05Speaker 2: be the bigger man. You go ahead and do this. Yeah, right,
- 43:09Speaker 2: And then he said no, no, no, no, no. He
- 43:12Speaker 2: instantly saw through my my bull like instantly saw through
- 43:15Speaker 2: it and said, oh no, I'm going to be the
- 43:18Speaker 2: bigger man, and I want to give it to you.
- 43:19Speaker 2: And we did this like two or three times, and
- 43:22Speaker 2: then finally I was like, great, thanks bye, and I
- 43:24Speaker 2: ran away and He's like, I thought I had one
- 43:27Speaker 2: more time that basically, and then he literally became like
- 43:34Speaker 2: in the course of that lead through we became we
- 43:37Speaker 2: became great, great friends. And I think all that chemistry
- 43:43Speaker 2: you know that you see that up there. I mean,
- 43:45Speaker 2: like so many of the bits we would just kind
- 43:47Speaker 2: of improvise on the spot. We'd be like, hey, excuse this,
- 43:53Speaker 2: this is a cool idea. How about this? And and
- 43:55Speaker 2: was like, yeah, do it, like you know what about
- 43:59Speaker 2: you know, so we all of that, we discovered, you know,
- 44:04Speaker 2: in that little kind of actory moment, our own natural
- 44:09Speaker 2: both affinity for each other and our chemistry with each other.
- 44:12Speaker 2: And and yeah, you's like you're like one of my
- 44:15Speaker 2: clothes friends.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Wow, that's so awesome. That's such a great, great thing.
- 44:19Speaker 6: And to find these kind of lifelong bonds through these
- 44:21Speaker 6: experiences like this movie was, it's pretty cool.
- 44:24Speaker 1: That's really awesome.
- 44:25Speaker 6: So Neil, you know, your your story is really interesting
- 44:28Speaker 6: to me because you know, of all the folks that
- 44:31Speaker 6: were in the film, and everybody, everybody has such a
- 44:35Speaker 6: great career they were involved in the middle of it,
- 44:38Speaker 6: or maybe some of these great careers began at this film.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Whatever it is.
- 44:42Speaker 6: This film was a part of so many people's story
- 44:44Speaker 6: in a unique way. For you, you know, the arc
- 44:47Speaker 6: of it being who you are and becoming you know,
- 44:50Speaker 6: not only a space of acting and everything that you did,
- 44:52Speaker 6: but you know, your amazing voice over work and all
- 44:54Speaker 6: the great acting that you did there and the voice
- 44:56Speaker 6: of the and and you know, I feel like this,
- 45:00Speaker 6: this this all thrusted all of you guys into the
- 45:03Speaker 6: limelight in a way like that that the very few
- 45:07Speaker 6: of us had had the opportunity of having before. And
- 45:10Speaker 6: and I think that, you know, because of this film,
- 45:13Speaker 6: the industry became a little bit more normalized to seeing
- 45:16Speaker 6: us out there.
- 45:17Speaker 1: What do you think about that.
- 45:20Speaker 2: About the industry?
- 45:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, getting.
- 45:24Speaker 6: Normally get a little bit more normalized to us and
- 45:27Speaker 6: getting used to seeing us on screen the way that
- 45:29Speaker 6: they did, you know, tell us about that, and I
- 45:32Speaker 6: know that, you know, obviously it wasn't so normal for
- 45:34Speaker 6: us to see us on screen before this.
- 45:37Speaker 2: No, I mean certainly back then it was. I'll say this.
- 45:43Speaker 2: So at that time, in the like kind of late
- 45:48Speaker 2: late nineties kind of peeking into the early off. Yeah,
- 45:51Speaker 2: it was like this kind of renaissance of South Asian
- 45:56Speaker 2: American specifically South Asian America can art, uh, dramatic art
- 46:04Speaker 2: being produced. So like there were movies, there were multiple
- 46:09Speaker 2: theater companies in New York at this time, you know,
- 46:15Speaker 2: uh Salam Theater, Jakey Pina Theater that there were, there
- 46:21Speaker 2: were a couple, there were more than that.
- 46:24Speaker 1: There music was exploding everything, I mean just that it
- 46:30Speaker 1: was crazy.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Everything Like Basement Bungerl was going on, and that was
- 46:34Speaker 2: like the thing every week to go to for everybody,
- 46:39Speaker 2: not not just Basis. There were like a bunch of
- 46:43Speaker 2: indie movies that came out of you know the uh
- 46:49Speaker 2: you know, I I've done a couple. I know that
- 46:51Speaker 2: there were others. There was like ab CD had come out,
- 46:57Speaker 2: Indian Cowboy dude, where's the party. Yeah, there were.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Many of these music as well.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there there were like a bunch there
- 47:08Speaker 2: were a bunch of them, and so like, and you know,
- 47:11Speaker 2: people were like kind of trying to figure out their voice,
- 47:14Speaker 2: figure out what they want to say, figure out the stop.
- 47:17Speaker 2: But the fact is is that there were just so
- 47:20Speaker 2: many things happened right and then. But the industry like
- 47:25Speaker 2: like sort of the Hollywood industry was sort of like, yeah, yeah, okay,
- 47:31Speaker 2: that's nice. I think over the course of time, you know,
- 47:37Speaker 2: we've seen it's definitely better than it was. It is
- 47:42Speaker 2: better today in twenty twenty six than it was in
- 47:45Speaker 2: two thousands, right, right, or you know, two thousand or
- 47:49Speaker 2: one or whatever.
- 47:49Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 47:51Speaker 2: And also it's always an end also, right, And also
- 47:57Speaker 2: we have so far to go. And also we are currently,
- 48:03Speaker 2: like right now, in this exact moment, seeing kind of uh,
- 48:08Speaker 2: a little bit of a turnback right now, you know,
- 48:13Speaker 2: just within I mean this is a little inside baseball stuff,
- 48:15Speaker 2: but like right now.
- 48:16Speaker 17: Within the industry, within the business, we're seeing.
- 48:19Speaker 2: A lot of you know, kind of well we we
- 48:22Speaker 2: kind of want to go back to white.
- 48:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting time.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's what's happening at this moment. So you know,
- 48:32Speaker 2: I think I think the the answer then, and uh
- 48:38Speaker 2: and is the same as the answer now, which is
- 48:40Speaker 2: that we have to keep making our stories. We have
- 48:42Speaker 2: to keep you know, telling our stories. And when I
- 48:46Speaker 2: say our stories, I don't just mean like, you know,
- 48:49Speaker 2: of course there's always going to be room for like
- 48:50Speaker 2: identity based stories, but any kind of the stories that
- 48:53Speaker 2: we tell are our story, right, right, we're telling them
- 48:58Speaker 2: that's not telling them, right, and we're always going to
- 49:01Speaker 2: have that point of view. We So so yeah, I think,
- 49:06Speaker 2: And it's so funny. I just I heard this uh
- 49:09Speaker 2: interview with them talking about you know, saying like saying
- 49:15Speaker 2: that same idea, like we need to tell our own stories.
- 49:18Speaker 2: I was just talking to a writer friend of mine
- 49:20Speaker 2: and she's like, we have to figure out a way too,
- 49:25Speaker 2: you know, create ways of getting our stories out there
- 49:29Speaker 2: that aren't necessarily just always dependent on structures that are
- 49:34Speaker 2: potentially going to diminish us. Right, So, oh my god,
- 49:37Speaker 2: that got real deep.
- 49:40Speaker 6: I was just like sitting back there, I was like, wow,
- 49:42Speaker 6: this is awesome, you know snel Okay, no, no, this
- 49:47Speaker 6: is this is awesome. And I appreciate that that you know,
- 49:50Speaker 6: your your your thought on this, because it is an
- 49:53Speaker 6: important note and it should be mentioned as part of
- 49:56Speaker 6: what as you put it. And also right it's it's
- 49:58Speaker 6: these are all parts of it, you know.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Of course of course I mean a sport well it
- 50:05Speaker 2: sound a court finger better now than they were than
- 50:09Speaker 2: they were before. But I can't help the same hand
- 50:11Speaker 2: also and also as well, yes, absolutely so much, so
- 50:17Speaker 2: hard to go, We really do that.
- 50:19Speaker 6: The whenever I've spoken to folks from the cast, such
- 50:24Speaker 6: a brethren that's built through the film in a way
- 50:26Speaker 6: where like these bonds have lasted such a long time,
- 50:29Speaker 6: you know, it's like a joint experience, ye a.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Bond, you know. And of course Shunte and I are
- 50:35Speaker 2: like super super tight. I actually introduced him to his wife.
- 50:39Speaker 1: How about that? That's really awesome.
- 50:41Speaker 2: And my wife helped get his son into college.
- 50:45Speaker 6: That's you know, that's really funny that to that point,
- 50:49Speaker 6: before I actually brought him on to interview him, he
- 50:53Speaker 6: had mentioned that to me that you know that you
- 50:55Speaker 6: guys go back so far like that.
- 50:56Speaker 1: That's really awesome, Neil.
