- 0:00OK be honest with me for a second.
- 0:01Especially you coffee lovers. Do you ever look at your 5 or
- 0:05$10 latte and have that tiny voice pop up?
- 0:08Like, This is why I'm not rich, because you didn't make that
- 0:12voice up. For years.
- 0:13You've been told by pundits like Susie Orman and Dave Ramsey and
- 0:18Caleb Hammer and other people that if you just stop buying
- 0:22coffee, stop enjoying the little things, stop treating yourself,
- 0:27then maybe you'll finally be wealthy.
- 0:29And I just want to say clearly, right out of the gate, you
- 0:32cannot shame yourself into wealth if you're carrying
- 0:35responsibility, building a life, showing up for everyone, and
- 0:39you're still feeling guilty over $5, that's not disciplined.
- 0:43That's scarcity, scarcity on repeat.
- 0:46And it's exhausting. So welcome to my world.
- 0:49Welcome to money mindset unfiltered.
- 0:51This series is for you. If you already know how to be
- 0:55good with money, you've been a good girl with money.
- 0:58But something about the advice you've been given just feels
- 1:01off. Because traditional Money Advice
- 1:04treats your life like a math problem and completely ignores
- 1:07that you're a human with emotions and nervous system.
- 1:10And a lot on your plate today want to walk you through the
- 1:13latte factor? Why it's a lie, why it sticks,
- 1:16and why it hits women so hard. And actually, what works
- 1:20instead? Without guilt, without
- 1:22punishment. So go grab your coffee.
- 1:24If you don't have it, I'll wait. Here's where this all came from.
- 1:28You've probably heard the Latte Factor created by David Balk.
- 1:32The idea is that if you save $5 a day and invested it, you'd
- 1:37have hundreds of $1000 decades from now.
- 1:40So listen, the math isn't wrong, but you aren't a spreadsheet.
- 1:44And when you're told that building wealth means denying
- 1:47yourself something small every single day, what you actually
- 1:50learn is joy now equals danger later.
- 1:54And eventually you're going to snap.
- 1:56You cut the coffee, you cut the fun, You try to be good, and
- 2:01then one stressful week later, you blow money because you're
- 2:04done with being deprived. Sound familiar?
- 2:07That's not a willpower issue. That's a strategy problem.
- 2:10And also, let's be real, if your financial life falls apart
- 2:13because of a latte, the latte isn't the issue.
- 2:17Or the avocado toast. Your income, your structure,
- 2:20your system, those are the real levers.
- 2:24But for decades, if not centuries, we have been told to
- 2:27budget harder. And if you don't budget, you
- 2:30have a self-discipline problem. I'm here to tell you that that's
- 2:33not the case. And we're going to talk about
- 2:35ways that you can change how you see your latte forever, or
- 2:39avocado toast or whatever it is that you spend money on.
- 2:41Here's the part that few say out loud that I'm on a mission to
- 2:44change. You've probably noticed that
- 2:46money culture loves to shame Coffee, brunch, clothes,
- 2:50convenience. Things women tend to spend money
- 2:53on. Meanwhile, spending thousands on
- 2:55tech, gear, hobbies, and networking somehow gets a pass.
- 3:00That's the difference between the masculine targeted messaging
- 3:03and the feminine targeted messaging.
- 3:05So what do you do? You internalize this quietly.
- 3:08Women have done this for years. We say I should want less.
- 3:12I should justify comfort. I should feel bad for enjoying
- 3:16things. And that shame sneaks in
- 3:18everywhere. You hesitate to check your bank
- 3:20account. You second guess yourself
- 3:21constantly. You feel like you need
- 3:23permission to spend even when you can afford it.
- 3:27Here's what I want you to hear today.
- 3:29You do not need to wait for the world to change this narrative.
- 3:33You can change it inside yourself, right here and right
- 3:36now. Let's do it together.
- 3:38So if you're not cutting lattes, what are you doing?
- 3:42You're choosing on purpose. I teach something in my world
- 3:45called guilt free spending rooted in emotional wealth.
- 3:49It's similar to what some people call conscious spending.
- 3:52But the difference here is this. It isn't about permission, it's
- 3:55about self trust. The idea is simple.
- 3:58Spend generously on what actually makes you feel good and
- 4:02cut everything away that doesn't make you feel good.
- 4:05Not everything deserves access to your money and not everyone
- 4:10deserves access to your money. So you build structure first,
- 4:14your bills are handled, your future is funded, and your
- 4:17safety lives there and then. In my world, what I do is I
- 4:20teach my clients how to create a spending account and fund their
- 4:23spending account. So once your future is handled,
- 4:27you've got money going into that account.
- 4:29You have a bills account for safety and security and what's
- 4:33left. That's where you decide.
- 4:35If travel lights you up, fund it.
- 4:37If support makes your life easier, keep it.
- 4:40If that latte, like my friend who has four year old twins,
- 4:43gives you 10 minutes of calm before the day starts, get the
- 4:47latte. Before the day asks of
- 4:49everything of you, buy the latte.
- 4:52But you do have to be honest with yourself.
- 4:54You can't love everything you choose, and when you choose
- 4:57consciously, something amazing happens.
- 5:00The shame disappears. You're not leaking money, you're
- 5:03directing it. This is the heart of everything
- 5:05I teach. Emotional wealth is trusting
- 5:07yourself with money, without fear, without punishment, and
- 5:11without spiraling. So next time you're about to
- 5:13spend, ask yourself, what is this really buying me?
- 5:17Is it a distraction or regulation?
- 5:19Is it autopilot or care? Because how you feel determines
- 5:24how you show up. When you're operating from
- 5:26scarcity, you hesitate, you shrink, you play small.
- 5:30When you feel grounded and supported, you ask for more.
- 5:33You take risks and you build wealth.
- 5:35Not because you cut harder, but because you trust yourself more.
- 5:38So here's your invitation. This week.
- 5:40Find one thing you've been quietly judging yourself for
- 5:43spending money on. Just one.
- 5:45Ask yourself, does this actually support my life?
- 5:49Does it help me show up as the woman I'm becoming?
- 5:51If the answer is yes, keep it, enjoy it, drop the guilt.
- 5:55If the answer is no, let it go cleanly.
- 5:58That's the power. You don't need permission to
- 6:01live a rich life now, you need intention.
- 6:03And yes, you can have the latte. If you're sitting here thinking,
- 6:07OK I get it, but I don't know where to start.
- 6:09Got you. Start here.
- 6:10First, track your money. Not to judge it, not to shame
- 6:14it, just to see it clearly. I've created a tool called the
- 6:17money Mirror exactly for this. It helps you see what your money
- 6:20is actually doing without spiraling.
- 6:23You can grab it at lisachastain.com/money Mirror
- 6:27and the links in the comments. Second, look at the last 90 days
- 6:30of spending. Just observe it and then ask
- 6:33yourself what's negotiable and what's not negotiable?
- 6:37What's actually supporting your life and what's not.
- 6:39No punishment. This is a great exercise for
- 6:41couples to do together too. No overthinking, just clarity.
- 6:45Third, open a separate spending account.
- 6:47This is something that I teach deeply in my new book, Stop
- 6:50Budgeting. Start Living because when you're
- 6:52spending is contained and intentional, the guilt
- 6:55disappears and the trust comes back.
- 6:57If watching this video made you feel calmer, more grounded and
- 7:01more like, OK, I can do this, good, that's the point.
- 7:05So like this video, subscribe to the channel because I'm serving
- 7:08up a lot more feel good real life financial guidance this
- 7:12year and I want you on the journey with me and truly forget
- 7:15the latte factor. Start building a life you
- 7:18actually love. I'll see you next
