- 0:00Speaker 1: The arrival of the notorious Pueblo gang in Dodge City
- 0:03Speaker 1: leaves Marshal Matt Dillon uneasy, though he has no grounds
- 0:07Speaker 1: to move against them. Although the gang has broken no
- 0:11Speaker 1: local law, Dillon keeps watch. Then the regularly scheduled Buckeye
- 0:16Speaker 1: stage is robbed, a passenger is wounded, and Dillon must
- 0:20Speaker 1: pursue a threat that has put travelers and the town
- 0:23Speaker 1: on edge. This CBS radio-sustaining presentation, first broadcast February 28, 1953,
- 0:32Speaker 1: is Gunsmoke, episode 45, Trojan War, with William Conrad as Dylan,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Parley Bear as Chester, and Georgia Ellis as Kitty. Les
- 0:43Speaker 1: Crutchfield wrote the script, and Norman MacDonald produced and directed.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And now, our story begins.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on.
- 1:03Speaker 2: West, there's just one way to handle the killers and
- 1:05Speaker 2: the spoilers, and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the
- 1:08Speaker 2: smell of gun smoke. Gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad.
- 1:30Speaker 2: The story of the violence that moved west with young America.
- 1:34Speaker 3: The story of a man who moved with it. Matt Dillon,
- 1:37Speaker 3: United States Marshal.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Gunsmoke Hi, it's a cold morning, Mr.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Dillon. Yeah, I'm ready for spring, Chester. The tail end
- 2:08Speaker 2: of winter always gets on my nerves. Well, it shouldn't
- 2:10Speaker 2: be long now. The worst of it's bound to be over.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I hope so.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Here, let's try some Delmonico's here.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'm always ready to eat, Mr. Dillon. Morning, Matt.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Chester.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Oh, how are you, Kitty?
- 2:25Speaker 5: How about joining me? Well, thank you.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Pull up a chair, Chester.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 2:31Speaker 2: You're up early this morning, Matt. Usually you don't even
- 2:33Speaker 2: start breathing until noon. It's too cold to sleep, Kitty.
- 2:37Speaker 2: A jail stove always burns itself out about 5 o'clock
- 2:40Speaker 2: in the morning. From then on, you just have to... Oh,
- 2:43Speaker 2: what is it, Matt?
- 2:45Speaker 5: Chester, that second table.
- 2:47Speaker 2: From the window over there. Those three men there, you
- 2:50Speaker 2: know them? No, sir, I don't think I do. Well,
- 2:54Speaker 2: I do. Ran into him about four years ago out
- 2:58Speaker 2: in Arizona territory. That's the Pueblo gang. Never heard of
- 3:04Speaker 2: them coming this far east before.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Well.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You want some help, mister?
- 3:09Speaker 5: No, just sit tight, Chester.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Ma'am? Order me some sausage and buckwheat cakes, Kitty, will you?
- 3:13Speaker 2: I'll be right back. I don't want to stay in
- 3:17Speaker 2: this town. I don't like it at all.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Morning, boys. It's the Parks brothers, isn't it?
- 3:25Speaker 2: Ed and Rio.
- 3:26Speaker 5: And Chuck Evans.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Well, what about it?
- 3:29Speaker 1: Easy, Rio.
- 3:30Speaker 5: It's Dylan, the U.S.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Marshal, the one I told you about. Yeah, I bet
- 3:33Speaker 2: you did. What'd you tell him, Chuck? Look, Dylan, our
- 3:35Speaker 2: food's getting cold. You got something on your mind or not?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Nothing important, Rio. I figure it's quite an honor to
- 3:41Speaker 2: have the Pueblo gang in town. I just thought I'd
- 3:42Speaker 2: drop over and tell you how I felt about it.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And how do you feel? Well, that depends, Ed. Are
- 3:50Speaker 2: you boys here on business, or.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Pleasure.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Does it make a difference? Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Yeah, it makes a difference. I know your reputation, Wester, here.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Half the stage holdups in the last five years from
- 4:04Speaker 2: Colorado to the California border can be laid right at
- 4:06Speaker 2: your door. As far as I know, you're clean in
- 4:10Speaker 2: Dodge City so far. All right, you just keep it
- 4:13Speaker 2: that way. You make one move here and your time's up.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Right then, you're short and I'll take you, all three
- 4:19Speaker 2: of you.
- 4:20Speaker 5: You understand?
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Sure, we understand. We'll think it over, Dylan. Let
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know what we decide to do. Rio, you talk
- 4:27Speaker 2: too much. Now, see you around, boys. You can put
- 4:37Speaker 2: the gun away now, Chester. All right. I'm just going
- 4:40Speaker 2: to be ready in case. Matt, I thought I'd tell you.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Those boys are mean. They were on the Texas Trail
- 4:48Speaker 2: last night. They're just downright mean.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I know.
- 4:51Speaker 2: What do we do, Mr. Dillon? Run him out of town?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Not unless they give us some reason to, Chester. The
- 4:57Speaker 2: law doesn't say you can hang a man because he
- 4:59Speaker 2: might steal a horse.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Forget it.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Let's see, huh? Our old train's just about ready to
- 5:18Speaker 2: pull off, looks like.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Yeah, it's on time. It's three o'clock.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Be in St. Louis tomorrow night, Chicago the next day.
- 5:25Speaker 5: If the engine holds up.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Well, they don't break down so much anymore. They're getting
- 5:30Speaker 2: them worked out so they're pretty dependable.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess so.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You ever get a hankering to take a trip back east, Mr. Dillon,
- 5:37Speaker 2: just to see how things have changed?
- 5:39Speaker 5: Not me, Chester. I've been on the frontier too long.
- 5:42Speaker 5: I'd be lost back there. I wouldn't know how to act.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I guess man could get his rope kinked over which
- 5:48Speaker 2: fork to use or what to do with it. Oh, hi, Will.
- 5:53Speaker 5: You down watching your competition pull off?
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll be a stagecoach runner for a long time
- 5:58Speaker 2: to come, yeah. Railroad's not bothering me any.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Well, I'm glad to hear that.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Something else is, though. No? Matt, the stage from Buckeye
- 6:07Speaker 2: is more than two hours overdue. I'm getting a little worried.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Why?
- 6:10Speaker 5: It's usually late, isn't it?
- 6:12Speaker 2: Not on this particular day of the month. What's today particular?
- 6:16Speaker 2: Gold dust. It's the day those plaster mines out there
- 6:20Speaker 2: always ship their cleanup. Charlie's never missed getting it here
- 6:24Speaker 2: at three o'clock on time for the eastbound Santa Fe.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Not once. Who's riding the shotgun, Will? Houston Jack. He's
- 6:31Speaker 5: a good man. I doubt if there's any cause to worry.
- 6:34Speaker 2: That shipment runs $ 80, 000 or $ 100, 000 sometimes, Matt. Never been
- 6:39Speaker 2: laid before. Oh, Charlie will probably roll in any minute now.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We'll see you later, Will. So long. What do you think, Mr. Dillon?
- 6:52Speaker 5: Same as you do, Chester. Let's ride off and meet
- 6:56Speaker 5: that stage. Thought I heard it, too.
- 7:15Speaker 2: We must be an hour and a half from town
- 7:17Speaker 2: the way the stage runs. Sure is late, all right.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I hope late is all it is, Chester. I hope
- 7:23Speaker 2: it's not. There. There it is again, Mr. Dillon. Yeah,
- 7:27Speaker 2: it came from that draw over there, somewhere around that
- 7:29Speaker 2: sumac thicket. Come on. Come on. Look, Mr. Dillon. Wheel
- 7:38Speaker 2: tracks leading off the trail. Yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Running to the dead gallop and out of control with the.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Well, Chester, there's the stage. I don't see any sign
- 7:53Speaker 2: of life, Mr. Dillon. Well, let's take a look. There's
- 8:02Speaker 2: tracks all around. Must have been three or four horses here.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Three the way I'm figuring it. I'll lay any odds
- 8:11Speaker 2: you want if this is some of the... That's Houston Jack, Mr. Dillon. Yeah.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Shot in the back of the head. And it didn't
- 8:23Speaker 5: take any chances.
- 8:24Speaker 2: He must have ridden up behind the stage and fired
- 8:26Speaker 2: without any warning. That's probably what spooked the horses and
- 8:31Speaker 2: started to run away. Yeah, they shot the lead horse.
- 8:39Speaker 2: It's an old trick. Charlie's still up here on the box.
- 8:44Speaker 2: They got him, too. That strong box has been forced open.
- 8:51Speaker 2: It's empty. All right, Chester, let's cut these horses loose
- 8:54Speaker 2: and get them out of the traces. All right, Chief.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Come on now, boy. It's the same way they used
- 9:06Speaker 2: to work it out west. Shoot the guard in the
- 9:08Speaker 2: back and let the team run until they're far enough
- 9:11Speaker 2: off the trail and then kill the lead horse.
- 9:12Speaker 5: To stop them.
- 9:13Speaker 2: You mean that duablo gang? Yeah, who else? Oh! That's
- 9:20Speaker 2: a good thing there weren't any passengers. They'd have got
- 9:22Speaker 2: the same treatment. All right, there you go, boy. I
- 9:29Speaker 2: think there were some passengers, Mr. Dillon. One, at least. What?
- 9:35Speaker 2: There's a couple of trunks tied on top and a
- 9:37Speaker 2: carpet bag of some kind inside the stage. Here, let's
- 9:40Speaker 2: have a look.
- 9:48Speaker 5: The only bodies are the guards and the drivers.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Say, maybe one of the gang was riding as a passenger.
- 9:54Speaker 2: They wouldn't leave trunks behind it. What is it?
- 9:58Speaker 5: There's stuff in the carpet bag. Belongs to a woman.
- 10:03Speaker 2: There's no woman here?
- 10:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I know.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Well, then they must have taken her. Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 5: It's almost dark.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Come on, Chester. Let's try to pick up their trail.
- 10:33Speaker 2: And it's just no use going any farther, Mr. Dillon.
- 10:35Speaker 2: It's too dark to tell what we're doing. Well, they
- 10:38Speaker 2: were heading toward the river here. Let's take a look
- 10:41Speaker 2: through these willows, and if we don't find anything, then
- 10:43Speaker 2: we'll ride on back to town. All right. I still
- 10:48Speaker 2: keep getting a faint whiff of wood smoke from somewhere.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I sure wish we would find the fire. It's getting
- 10:54Speaker 2: colder in the... Wait a minute. Look over there. Well,
- 11:00Speaker 2: I'll swear. It's fire, all right. What's left of one, Mr. Dillon?
- 11:06Speaker 5: You suppose there's still one?
- 11:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:09Speaker 5: Let's leave the horses here and go up on foot, huh?
- 11:11Speaker 5: All right, sir.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Well, there's nothing moving. No signs of life. They couldn't
- 11:20Speaker 2: have left too long ago. That fire would have burned
- 11:23Speaker 2: itself out. Well... I'd say we're too late, Mr. Dillon.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I think they've gone.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Yeah, it looks that way already.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Yeah, a half hour or an hour ago. Made a
- 11:47Speaker 2: fast camp, stayed long enough to warm up and then
- 11:49Speaker 2: they went... What was that?
- 11:52Speaker 5: I don't know. They're over here, Chester. There's somebody lying on.
- 12:00Speaker 2: The ground over there. Help me. Help me, please.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Here. Throw some brush on the fire, Chester. Yes, sir.
- 12:11Speaker 2: No, it's all right, miss. It's all right now. Three
- 12:16Speaker 2: of them.
- 12:18Speaker 6: Robbed the state. Killed the driver and the guard. Brought
- 12:22Speaker 6: me with them.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Anything I can do, Mr. Dillon?
- 12:25Speaker 5: No, Chester, I'm afraid not.
- 12:28Speaker 2: A little of it.
- 12:31Speaker 5: Chester, get some light over here. Grab one of those
- 12:32Speaker 5: branches that's caught fire.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yes, Mr. Dillon.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Just easy now. It's going to be all right.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I pleaded with them. Begged them to let me go. Here.
- 12:46Speaker 2: This help in? Yeah, hold it over here.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Helen.
- 12:54Speaker 2: But they wouldn't. They wouldn't let me go. Helen Ford.
- 13:01Speaker 6: And when they left, they drew their guns and shot me.
- 13:08Speaker 2: They shot me.
- 13:11Speaker 5: You know who they were?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Helen?
- 13:15Speaker 5: Helen, can you hear me?
- 13:20Speaker 2: One.
- 13:22Speaker 6: One named Rio. One called Chuck. They sat on their horses.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Shot me.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Then they left.
- 13:37Speaker 2: She's in awful bad shape, Mr. Nellon. We ought to
- 13:40Speaker 2: get her to dog. Shot me. And laughed. But it
- 13:46Speaker 2: didn't matter. Not this.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Not.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Well... It's too late now. Yeah, it's too late. I'll
- 14:09Speaker 2: carry her back to Dodge. Get me your saddle blanket,
- 14:11Speaker 2: will you, Chester? You knew her, Mr. Dillon? A long
- 14:19Speaker 2: time ago. Then things happen the way they do. Later
- 14:27Speaker 2: she married Bill Ford and went out to Colorado. It was.
- 14:31Speaker 5: A long time ago.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I didn't expect I'd ever see her again. It's a
- 14:38Speaker 2: bad thing, Mr. Nealon. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm gonna see
- 14:48Speaker 2: him hang for it.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Over here, Chester, we'll check the livery stable first.
- 15:15Speaker 2: They could have pulled out, of course, but I'll lay
- 15:17Speaker 2: odds they came straight back into town. It won't take
- 15:19Speaker 2: long to find out.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Now, let's go in.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Who's there? Who is it? It's Matt Dillon.
- 15:29Speaker 5: Is that you, Mr.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Kelvin? Oh, yeah, sure is, Marshal. Hey, let me get
- 15:33Speaker 2: a lantern lit. I'm just fixing to lock up the
- 15:38Speaker 2: stable and go over and grab myself a bite to eat.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Running things alone again tonight. Confounded boy didn't show up.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Like he's not drunk and seen. There. Come on, Marshal.
- 15:49Speaker 2: We got a fire going back in the office. Come
- 15:51Speaker 2: on back. Set us back. I'd like to, Calvin, but
- 15:53Speaker 2: we don't have time. I'm looking for some horses. I
- 15:56Speaker 2: got them, Marshal. You want to buy, trade, or hire?
- 15:58Speaker 5: Just a look.
- 16:00Speaker 2: There are three fellas staying over at the Dodge house.
- 16:02Speaker 2: They've been there about a week. Ed and Rio Parks
- 16:04Speaker 2: and Chuck Evans. They keeping their horses here? Yeah, they are,
- 16:08Speaker 2: right back here. And if I ever saw a ruination
- 16:12Speaker 2: of good horse flesh, this is it. There. Take a
- 16:18Speaker 2: look there. That one belongs to the oldest parks boy, Ed,
- 16:21Speaker 2: and the one next to it's Rio's. They been rode, Mr. Jones.
- 16:25Speaker 2: They been rode plenty. Yeah. What time did they come in, Kelvin? Well,
- 16:29Speaker 2: about an hour ago, more or less. Gone since forenoon,
- 16:32Speaker 2: just come back a little while ago. Look at that horse.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Been rubbed down twice, and he's still wet. They didn't
- 16:38Speaker 2: say where they'd been today. No, not them. They ain't
- 16:41Speaker 2: the talking kind. Just left their horses and went on
- 16:43Speaker 2: over the hotel. Wherever they was, though, they must have
- 16:46Speaker 2: been riding like the devil himself was chasing them.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Well, maybe he was.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Thanks, Mr. Kelly. Yeah, you're welcome. Well, I guess there's
- 17:00Speaker 2: not much doubt of it, Chester. And I could have
- 17:05Speaker 2: stopped it before it happened. A man shouldn't be jailed
- 17:09Speaker 2: on suspicion, I figured. Just because he might do something wrong. Well, my.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Everybody has to play it the way he sees it.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Only sometimes you can see it a lot plainer afterwards.
- 17:22Speaker 2: What are we going to do?
- 17:25Speaker 5: Go get him, that's all.
- 17:26Speaker 4: The End.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Well, where do we start looking? The Texas Trail. One thing, Chester,
- 17:46Speaker 2: before we go in. Now, you leave the play on
- 17:49Speaker 2: this to me, huh? Just keep me covered, that's all. Mr. Dillon,
- 17:53Speaker 2: what was her name before she was married? Marlowe. Helen Marlowe.
- 18:01Speaker 2: All right, come on, let's go.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Well, it was a real dull evening up until now.
- 18:12Speaker 2: How are you, Matt? Chester? Hi, Miss Kitty Kitty. Uh,
- 18:18Speaker 2: I'm looking for the Pueblo gang. Have any of them
- 18:20Speaker 2: been in here? Why, yeah. One of them's here now.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Little Park, she's over there at the faro table. Huh? Well,
- 18:28Speaker 2: what's wrong, Matt? What happened? They held up the Buckeye stage.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Killed Charlie and Houston Jack.
- 18:35Speaker 5: And a passenger.
- 18:35Speaker 2: A woman. Helen Ford. All right, Chester. Be careful, man.
- 18:43Speaker 5: Yeah, sure, Kitty.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Just cover me, Chester.
- 18:48Speaker 5: That's all.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Yes, you... 500 says I've got the car. Are you
- 18:54Speaker 2: going to cover me or not? What's the matter? You
- 18:57Speaker 2: all a bunch of bikers? Maybe they haven't been out.
- 19:01Speaker 5: Robbing stagecoaches, Rio. What do you mean by that?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Maybe they don't make that living by killing women. Bill,
- 19:12Speaker 2: the man could get in trouble shooting off his mouth
- 19:15Speaker 2: that way. You're already in trouble. All right, boys, Rio's
- 19:18Speaker 2: checking in his hand. The game's over. You can slide
- 19:20Speaker 2: out at the end of the table over there. You're
- 19:26Speaker 2: under arrest for murder, Rio. I don't know what you're
- 19:29Speaker 2: talking about, Dylan. Murder. Murder. A murder that you're going
- 19:33Speaker 2: to hang for. Now, where are the other two? Go
- 19:38Speaker 2: find them if you want them. I'm going to as
- 19:40Speaker 2: soon as I finish with you. I said you're under arrest, Rio,
- 19:45Speaker 2: and I get your hands up.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Well, then I don't. You're not going to make any play,
- 19:49Speaker 5: you know. have the guts.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Shooting a man in the back is more your line, Rio.
- 19:55Speaker 2: You're killing a woman. Now get your hands up. That's better.
- 20:04Speaker 5: All right, Chester, get his gun.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Seems like it's getting colder, Mr. Dillon.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Clear as a bell.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Look at that moon. Where do you suppose they are?
- 20:32Speaker 2: You've been in nearly every saloon on Front Street.
- 20:34Speaker 5: I don't know, Chester, but wherever they are, we're going
- 20:36Speaker 5: to find them.
- 20:37Speaker 2: And you know something, Mr. Dillon? When we do arrest
- 20:40Speaker 2: the other two, they're as good as hung with the
- 20:42Speaker 2: evidence we got on them.
- 20:44Speaker 5: I haven't arrested him yet.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Maybe them other two won't be taken as easy as Rio.
- 20:50Speaker 2: That's up to them. If they want to surrender, they can.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I've never shot a man with his hands up. Chester. Huh?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Ben's barbershop over there. The man that he's shaving. It's
- 21:05Speaker 2: kind of hard to tell with all that lather.
- 21:07Speaker 5: No, it's Ed Parks.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Come on. And there's just him and Ben in the shop...
- 21:14Speaker 2: I wonder where Chuck Evans is.
- 21:16Speaker 5: We'll worry about him later.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Just help yourselves to a seat, gentlemen. Be ready for
- 21:22Speaker 2: you just as soon as... Oh, evening, Marshal.
- 21:25Speaker 5: How you been? I didn't know you were in the
- 21:28Speaker 5: habit of shaving outlaws.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Well, maybe you're mistaken, Marshal. You just have a seat
- 21:34Speaker 2: there and I.
- 21:34Speaker 5: No, I recognize him, all right. It's Ed Parks.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Well, looks like you got the advantage of me, Dylan. No,
- 21:44Speaker 2: we can't have that, Ed. Wipe the leather off his face, Ben. Yes, sir.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Sure thing, Marshal. Just a second now, Mr. Parks. There.
- 21:55Speaker 2: There you are. It's too bad you have to leave
- 21:57Speaker 2: that shave half-finished, Ed. But they'll give you a free
- 22:00Speaker 2: one just before they hang you. What are you talking about, Dylan? Now, gentlemen...
- 22:05Speaker 2: If you're under arrest for murder, get your hands up.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Your brother's waiting for you at the jail. You arrested real....
- 22:14Speaker 5: What about the hands, Ed? Are you gonna put them up?
- 22:18Speaker 2: No, dirty gentleman! Huh?
- 22:24Speaker 5: That was a fast move for a barber, Ben.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I knew he had a gun under the towel, Marshal,
- 22:29Speaker 2: but of course I couldn't say anything about it.
- 22:31Speaker 5: Oh, thank you, Ben.
- 22:33Speaker 2: And if you'll send the bill for your shaving mug
- 22:35Speaker 2: to the stage company, they'll probably take care of it
- 22:37Speaker 2: for you. Yes, sir, Mr. Dillon.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Chester, spill some water on him. I want him to
- 22:42Speaker 5: walk to jail.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I'll bet Chuck Evans got clean away, Mr. Dillon. The
- 23:02Speaker 2: word must have gotten to him. Well, he had to
- 23:04Speaker 2: do it awful fast. The clerk said he checked out
- 23:06Speaker 2: of the hotel less than ten minutes ago. Kelvin? Kelvin?
- 23:14Speaker 2: The light must hurt his eyes. He never keeps a
- 23:17Speaker 2: lantern burning. Afraid of fire, maybe. Kelvin?
- 23:21Speaker 5: Are you there, Kelvin? Yes.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Hey, what's wrong? Who is it?
- 23:25Speaker 5: Matt Dillon.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Oh.
- 23:26Speaker 5: Strike a light. A man could fall over something in
- 23:28Speaker 5: this table and break his neck.
- 23:29Speaker 2: All right, all right. I just don't get excited. I'm
- 23:33Speaker 2: used to it myself. I know just where everything is
- 23:36Speaker 2: and don't see any point in wasting oil and... Now,
- 23:40Speaker 2: what's on your mind, Marshal? Chuck Evans. Is his horse
- 23:43Speaker 2: still here? Indeed, it most certainly is. As a matter
- 23:46Speaker 2: of fact, he's back there saddling up right now. Good.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I told him it seemed like a fool time of
- 23:51Speaker 2: night to start out on a trip, but you can't
- 23:54Speaker 2: reason with anybody that treats horses the way that bunch does.
- 23:57Speaker 5: I guess not.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Nelson! Go on, answer him. Yes? What is it? Give
- 24:05Speaker 2: me a hand back here. What is it? Tell him yes.
- 24:10Speaker 2: All right. I'm coming. What's this all about, Marshal? Nothing
- 24:14Speaker 2: to get yourself worked up about. Just stay right here
- 24:16Speaker 2: and stay out of the way.
- 24:18Speaker 5: All right, Chester.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yes, sir. He's got a lantern right there at the stall. Yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 5: You were right about one thing, Chester. He's trying to
- 24:30Speaker 5: leave town.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Give me a hand with this, Kelvin. I can't seem
- 24:33Speaker 2: to get the... You've gone somewhere, Chuck. Who? Now, look, look, Dylan.
- 24:42Speaker 2: You got nothing on me. Lay off.
- 24:44Speaker 5: The Parks boys are in jail.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I don't know anything about it, Dylan. You can't prove
- 24:48Speaker 2: a thing, and you can't shoot me. I'm not even
- 24:52Speaker 2: wearing a gun. It's hanging there on the saddle horn.
- 24:55Speaker 5: Yeah. So I see.
- 24:58Speaker 2: If the other boys did something, I don't know anything
- 25:00Speaker 2: about it. You're a liar, Chuck.
- 25:03Speaker 5: And you're a coward.
- 25:06Speaker 2: You've got no call to talk like that. Shut up.
- 25:11Speaker 5: Now, you're under arrest. Chester, get his gun off his saddle.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Look out, Mr. Dillon. He's got another gun. I'll kill you, Dillon. Sir,
- 25:18Speaker 2: help me. You're scared, Chuck. You're too scared to shoot straight. Sir,
- 25:22Speaker 2: help me.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Well, I guess that does it, Chester.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Come on. What is it, Marshal?
- 25:37Speaker 5: What happened? Evans is dead.
- 25:39Speaker 2: The Parks boys are going to hang your short three customers, Kelvin. Well,
- 25:43Speaker 2: who's going to pay the stable bill? The stable bill?
- 25:47Speaker 2: You got their horses. Sell them. Oh, yeah, I never
- 25:50Speaker 2: thought of that. Well, it serves them right. Anybody that
- 25:53Speaker 2: would treat a horse the way that bunch did, David.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I guess it's over, Mr. Dillon.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Yeah. It's over, Chester.
- 26:06Speaker 2: And it's just as well. This country would be a
- 26:08Speaker 2: lot better off with them fellas dead than alive.
- 26:11Speaker 5: I guess so.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Huh. Even the moon looks brighter.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Mr. Dillon, you're still thinking you should have jailed him
- 26:23Speaker 2: on suspicion, aren't you? I'd have half a dodge in
- 26:27Speaker 2: jail if I started that. No, Chester, it's the kind
- 26:29Speaker 2: of a chance a lawman has to take, whether he
- 26:32Speaker 2: likes it or not.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 26:36Speaker 2: But I'm not liking it much right now. In the morning,
- 26:41Speaker 2: I'm going to have a talk with a preacher about
- 26:43Speaker 2: holding a service for Helen.
- 26:46Speaker 5: That's about all I can do for her now.
