- 0:05So you have a chance to retire or You get fired
- 0:15all of a sudden what's your plan now? Have you
- 0:22thought about that Years from now five ten twenty
- 0:31years ago Do you have the financial means to
- 0:39support yourself through inflation, through tariffs,
- 0:47through rising prices, through shrink inflation?
- 1:00There are so many instances where i've been employed
- 1:06and either my co -workers have been let go the
- 1:12same day without warning or some of my co -workers
- 1:18distance co -workers have been fired um all of
- 1:26a sudden like the co -workers that worked in
- 1:32the same government that I've worked in and or
- 1:40we have been scared out of our wits that us too
- 1:52are going to be fired laid off or we have to
- 2:00make the decision whether to take the early buyout
- 2:06take the drp or just stay and take our chances
- 2:12well i was fortunate enough to be given the vera
- 2:28we didn't have the visa unfortunately but our
- 2:36department was given the Vera I hadn't planned
- 2:44on retiring until 2027 that way I'll have enough
- 2:54money saved up in my retirement account where
- 2:59I can just pay off my house and be debt free
- 3:02Well, I chose between staying until 2027, retiring
- 3:14early, or taking the Vera at age 55. I took the
- 3:32Vera because I was ready to retire a year and
- 3:39a half earlier and I was thinking in ways how
- 3:44can I retire hmm I'm 53 how early can I retire
- 3:50because I was so sick of the politics of My current
- 4:01boss at the time When I was a supervisor I thought
- 4:09how can I be tired like I even thought about
- 4:13leaving Going to work for the for the private
- 4:18sector coming back in a couple years and finish
- 4:24out my Year so I can get you know my retirement
- 4:31I applied to other organizations, other government
- 4:38entities like the Army, HUD, but I'm so thankful
- 4:47that I did not get selected because those entities,
- 4:53most of them which I applied to, were independent.
- 5:00And that's why people lost their jobs at a flick
- 5:08of a pen or at a flick of a wrist. Because those
- 5:14agencies were independent. I worked for the Department
- 5:17of Defense. And we were covered. Our jobs were
- 5:27more secure. Let me put it that way. Especially
- 5:34in these times you have to have a plan Whether
- 5:41you're five years away from your retirement projected
- 5:44date 10 years 20 years You need to start planning
- 5:52now see I was fortunate to retire at 55 because
- 5:57I ran a part -time business since 1980 1998 I
- 6:07Became a bridal consultant and Wedding and special
- 6:15event planner Then that's when I started making
- 6:21Body pillows making floor arrangements Anything
- 6:27I can make and sell I would sell it on eBay and
- 6:32we would go to the flea market and just have
- 6:34fun on the weekends like you know getting hundreds
- 6:38of dollars in a few hours and I just kept up
- 6:44my license for all these years whether I would
- 6:47whether I do it one hour a week or 10 hours a
- 6:54week or on the weekends Just kept my license
- 6:58activated because I was making you know how you
- 7:02have to Get a license And pay taxes if you make
- 7:08a certain amount of money a year so it was just
- 7:11my little hobby and it helped because some sometimes
- 7:16after I paid bills I Wouldn't have enough money
- 7:20for food or wouldn't have enough money for gas
- 7:24and those cells cha -ching in the middle of the
- 7:28night in the early morning during the day would
- 7:33cover the food and or the gas cost and I just
- 7:39love hearing that cha -ching sound you know I
- 7:43really don't like anything waking me up in the
- 7:46middle of the night because it's hard for me
- 7:49to go to sleep but that cha -ching That cash
- 7:55register sound oh, yeah, I invite that to wake
- 7:59me up anytime So my my Purpose for this is to
- 8:10help you plan for your future you never know
- 8:14if Your pit business is gone if your company
- 8:18is going on the business. I just saw on a TV
- 8:23this company that's been in the business for
- 8:26decades is going into business and I Think 300
- 8:30people are losing their jobs Like what are these
- 8:34people going to do if they have no backup plan?
- 8:38That's crazy. They're gonna lose insurance The
- 8:43benefits like that's crazy so Start planning
- 8:52now Get a business license in some states a business
- 8:58license is free in my state back then I was I
- 9:03paid $25 for my business license And I started
- 9:09from nothing I Started with a saw machine and
- 9:14about five or ten dollars go buy some Material
- 9:21Joanne fabric when it was in operation Hancock
- 9:26Walmart like You can buy fabric on sale and just
- 9:32start making pillows That's what I did That's
- 9:37what started my business Almost 30 years ago
- 9:42Now that I'm retired I Decide to run my business
- 9:47full -time And yeah, I said I'm not gonna do
- 9:52anything for a whole year I'm gonna sleep for
- 9:5740 days and 40 nights But you know after two
- 10:02or three months I was bored I was like I can't
- 10:05sit around do nothing. That's how I gained weight
- 10:08before like I made my schedule For 10, so I won't
- 10:15work 10 hours a day mainly sitting down, eating
- 10:21snacks. You know, when you work 10 hours, you
- 10:25bring lunch, breakfast, sometimes dinner. And
- 10:32those vending machines are a devil. We had a
- 10:37snack, what do you call it? Snacks to benefit,
- 10:45you know, Events we had I forgot what they call
- 10:52it, but they put snacks in the break room and
- 10:54you Pay your money and get you know, whatever
- 10:57snack you want Little exercise I used to we used
- 11:03to go to the gym a lot back in the day before
- 11:07Colvin a lot of things change after that but
- 11:12I'm running my business full -time alteration
- 11:18Taylor in business and I make Custom clothing
- 11:26pieces for for customers And I do have online
- 11:32stores but Part of me Wanted to get out the house
- 11:46and keep moving Just start moving because when
- 11:52you're Stacking it sitting down watching TV Your
- 11:59health starts to climb even if you are exercising
- 12:03one or two times a week The more you sit The
- 12:08more you suffer And then I've always dreamed
- 12:20about opening my business full -time. And I was
- 12:27fortunate enough to retire young enough and I
- 12:34still had the desire to work outside the home.
- 12:48Not only that It It keeps my brain young I'm
- 13:07always thinking of new stuff and When you have
- 13:21constant creativity in your brain that keeps
- 13:24your whole body young that keeps your mind sharp
- 13:30so during my next segment I'm going to tell you
- 13:46Started my business the steps it took to get
- 13:50a business license You don't have to pay anybody
- 13:54to get a business license the steps it takes
- 13:58to register Your company and Copyright and trademark
- 14:09anything you want Easy peasy It takes a lot of
- 14:20research so you won't Duplicate any other business
- 14:28that has copyrighted anything On their be on
- 14:36their part But it's cheaper than paying an attorney
- 14:44to research for you. They're just researching
- 14:47too. So, go into the Library of Congress, research,
- 14:54hey, does anybody else have this business name?
- 14:57Or does anybody else have this trademark symbol?
- 15:03And if you research, you just fill out the paperwork
- 15:08and register at the NRA. business license in
- 15:19Ohio I Think it might be $50 now. I'm not sure
- 15:25but You can do a long line You can go to the
- 15:36small business center. I'm sure every state Probably
- 15:42mostly cities have one. It's free resources That
- 15:48can guide you to whatever you're looking for
- 15:53regarding starting your own business or Just
- 15:58sustaining your business I Will teach you the
- 16:05steps to write a business plan We can go page
- 16:10by page And I will give you the information that
- 16:16you need to put in your business plan to make
- 16:22it effective for when you want to get a loan.
- 16:28I never have gotten a loan. I never have applied
- 16:31for a loan. That was my goal. I don't need a
- 16:35loan because what I'm doing I can start it from
- 16:41with less than twenty dollars. I already had
- 16:46the saw machine from years ago get that out the
- 16:51closet dust it out hey get some material sign
- 17:01up for eBay you don't have to pay anything upfront
- 17:04unless you want a store so you can choose your
- 17:09own categories and you can you know sort yourself
- 17:13out the way you like it but you can sell on ebay
- 17:17without upfront free up front fee oh say that
- 17:22three times but my next segment we will start
- 17:31from the very beginning and i would teach you
- 17:35how to be self sufficient even if you do have
- 17:44a full -time job be prepared if and when you
- 17:53get laid off you have an option to retire or
- 17:59you're forced to retire till next time have an
- 18:08open mind and think of a business you want to
- 18:14start if you don't already have one in mind.
