A 12-year-old gorilla named Mizani just pulled off a medical miracle: he’s the first gorilla ever to survive a mastoidectomy, a complex surgery to clear a deadly bone infection behind the ear. Diagnosed with sinusitis and mastoiditis after showing signs of pain and refusing to open his mouth, Mizani’s case brought together human and animal vets—including UC San Diego specialists—for a five-hour, 20-person operation.
