Latest / Most Things Kenobi - A Star Wars Podcast / Episode 121: The Mystery and Intrigue of Force Lightning
Transcript
- 0:00Hello there, it's time for most things Kenobi.
- 0:05I prefer all things Kenobi, but I suppose that's not the Jedi
- 0:08way, as long as it's not all things Anakin.
- 0:24Hi everyone, welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi.
- 0:28A podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:31I'm your host, Lauren. And I'm your host Leanne.
- 0:36And this week, this was like the Wills, Leanne.
- 0:41Yeah, tell me more. Like researching forced
- 0:45lightning was like going down a rabbit hole with no end.
- 0:50And I I didn't realize that it was so much more.
- 0:55Yeah, a lot. You think on the surface I was
- 0:58just like, what the fuck? This is this scene.
- 1:02It was a lot. Well, we're talking about Forced
- 1:07Lightning and Luke Skywalker, and I'm probably going to get a
- 1:12little technical. I'm not going to get super
- 1:14technical. I could if you wanted me to, but
- 1:16I'm going to spare everyone's souls from the hard science of
- 1:22lightning itself. But I'm excited to talk about
- 1:27this because you and I have asked this question before.
- 1:30Why doesn't Luke have any scarring from all that Force
- 1:35lightning? I will say that that like after
- 1:39all this research, I have no answer.
- 1:42Well, that's good. That's good, because it keeps
- 1:45the mystery alive. Yeah, there's a lot of theories,
- 1:49but there's no like, official answer which is very.
- 1:53Very frustrating. Well, just like everything else,
- 1:57the wills like you mentioned. Yes.
- 2:00Yeah, you know all these mido chlorians we can't explain
- 2:05Sabine's sudden forceness. There's just unexplained things
- 2:10in the Galaxy. I didn't realize there were so
- 2:15many kinds of forced lightning. Honestly, I thought there was
- 2:18just forced lightning. And there's a ton of kinds.
- 2:21I didn't know. Let's start there because I'm
- 2:23unaware. OK, so there are totally
- 2:26different explanations depending on if you're looking at Canon or
- 2:29Legends. They're like not even remotely
- 2:33the same. It's insane.
- 2:34Of course. So in Canon, there are basically
- 2:40different colors and. Even like Mother, Talzin has
- 2:46forced lightning, apparently. It would make sense that a witch
- 2:50could utilize a force like that. It seems like they have whatever
- 2:55they want at their fingertips, literally and figuratively.
- 2:58Yes. So basically the commonality I'm
- 3:01seeing is that the Force is like a or I'm sorry, forced lightning
- 3:05is like a physical manifestation of the Force.
- 3:08It's like a tactile like manifestation of the Force.
- 3:13So interesting. It requires a lot of power, and
- 3:20sometimes it requires sacrificing part of yourself for
- 3:25that power, which is why Jedi don't use it usually.
- 3:28And even it was banned by the Jedi for most of Jedi history.
- 3:36But in Legends there are different kinds, like so many
- 3:39kinds, I don't know if we have time to list them all.
- 3:43I find this fascinating because I only know one kind of
- 3:47lightning and that's what happens on planet Earth, you
- 3:52know? So how can there be variation?
- 3:54I guess I don't know. I'll.
- 3:55I'll hold all questions until after you you tell us more.
- 4:00Well, the thing, the one the version that I found most
- 4:03hilarious, was called Electric Judgment.
- 4:06What? So sorry, so stupid.
- 4:14I love that. It's a Jedi version of forest
- 4:18lightning. That of course it is.
- 4:20It's it's so judgy. I know, right?
- 4:23Right. It's so self-righteous.
- 4:27It's insane. But Luke and PLO Coon have used
- 4:31that, and it's like when you when you know you are in the
- 4:37right and you have. The correct judgment at a
- 4:40situation they don't use it to to harm, although Luke did use
- 4:44the teal people. Oh, well, that's fine.
- 4:46I mean Skywalker stuff, right? Look, he was backed into a
- 4:52corner. He had to.
- 4:53So there's like the Force Shock, Force Storm Chain lightning.
- 4:59Sys. Barrage Lightning Shield.
- 5:03Lightning Grenade. What?
- 5:06Lightning bum, we escalate. Oh.
- 5:11Sith Seeker Lightning Burst and then Vader's variant.
- 5:20That queen is has to have his own special term for his force
- 5:27Lightning. I mean, it makes sense.
- 5:29He is wearing an electrical suit, so he would definitely
- 5:32have to. He'd have.
- 5:33To have a variant, yeah. How fascinating.
- 5:38So you can see why I was overwhelmed, yes.
- 5:43And I did not read through all of this because it's just it was
- 5:46too much. I just read through the
- 5:47traditional forced lightning. So that was plenty in and of
- 5:52itself. In your reading, did you happen
- 5:55to see anything now? You said to use forced
- 5:57lightning. Sometimes you have to give some
- 6:00of yourself to use it correct. Yeah, it can have like a very
- 6:05negative side effect on both the user and the victim.
- 6:10So if you're so I'm thinking of Ray in The Rise of Skywalker,
- 6:14right? She just kind of it's almost
- 6:17like she was surprised it happened.
- 6:19Yeah, so people are really upset about that, and it's because
- 6:23Legends Legends created this whole idea of what you needed in
- 6:28order to use forced lightning. And there were like specific
- 6:32rules, like you had to be very focused, like it doesn't just
- 6:36happen by accident, you had to have had it happen to you and
- 6:41then it like transfers the power to you.
- 6:44That I can buy this is stuff that makes sense to me.
- 6:48I mean in a scifi world. And you had to be taught
- 6:52specifically how to use, and Ray had none of that.
- 6:55And it was just like a burst of emotion from Ray.
- 6:58Which in Legends now, I'm sorry, in Cannon that that's possible.
- 7:04So they've shown it a couple of times in cannon that it can just
- 7:09be a burst of emotion that causes forced lightning.
- 7:13Hers was strong enough to blow up a ship.
- 7:16Yeah. So Ray, I'm not dogging on her,
- 7:20you know, I'm just trying to figure out.
- 7:22Wouldn't someone who, especially if they didn't prepare
- 7:25themselves to wield Force lightning, wouldn't it exhaust
- 7:29them a little bit? I'm thinking of like, you
- 7:32remember how when baby Yoda uses the Force when he's super super
- 7:36young in the in the Mandalorian season and he like falls asleep
- 7:39and takes a nap. That's the worst because he's so
- 7:41tiny and cute and young and all. But like I'm thinking the same
- 7:45thing if you don't practice and you don't.
- 7:49Learn how to wield it in a certain manner.
- 7:52Yeah, it could totally wipe you out.
- 7:56Yeah, it's very draining. And they said that actually Yoda
- 7:59in Attack of the Clones when he absorbs Dooku, forced lightning.
- 8:03That was very exhausting. And same in Revenge of the Sith.
- 8:06When he's fighting Sidious, it's very exhausting to deflect it
- 8:11and to project it, I guess, but. The argument about Ray like
- 8:18she's a fucking Palpatine, so if it can be transferred by, you
- 8:24know, so much shocking you. Clearly Palpatine is very good
- 8:27with forced lightning, so could it not be passed down through
- 8:32blood? It's the only explanation here.
- 8:37Yeah, I mean, if we're sticking to the Legends idea of how it's
- 8:40transferred, according to Canon, it doesn't need.
- 8:42You don't need to be electrocuted in order to do it.
- 8:46That was a Legends thing. So yeah, I don't know, it's it
- 8:50is, it is very confusing. It's very hard to keep track of
- 8:54everything. But yeah, it was interesting.
- 8:57At the same time, I had no idea how prevalent it is.
- 9:02Like it seems in the movies, you don't see it that often.
- 9:06It's very rare. Like Snoke uses it on Kylo run.
- 9:10I think Ray and Kylo use it around each other.
- 9:15Insidious. Well, I guess, I guess then if
- 9:19there's the dyad, they could. That makes sense.
- 9:23That's interesting. That's an interesting idea.
- 9:26I mean, they're both emotional. They're both.
- 9:29They both come from questionable lines of emotion.
- 9:36Looking at you, Han Solo. Looking at I was looking at
- 9:40Anakin, but you know. Comes on all sides for Ben Solo,
- 9:43honestly. I love Han of God and I don't
- 9:49know, I just it it cheapened it a little bit when she was a
- 9:52little surprised that she was using it, you know?
- 9:54And then she continued to use it.
- 9:56Wouldn't it like, wasn't your surprised at using it?
- 9:59Stop it. Almost.
- 10:00I don't know. I well, I mean it kind of just I
- 10:03would. You know what?
- 10:04You're right. Because I always think of it.
- 10:05It was just like a short burst. But she held on to that for
- 10:07like, I don't know, Maybe she didn't know how to let go.
- 10:11That's true. I'll give her that.
- 10:12But I don't know. If you don't know that you're
- 10:14using it, you don't know how to stop it at the same time till
- 10:16shit blows up. Shit.
- 10:17Right, and you know she didn't use it later on anybody else?
- 10:21Especially that when she was fighting Palpatine, she used
- 10:25lightsabers to deflect it instead.
- 10:27So. You know what?
- 10:28Maybe that's why they even put this in.
- 10:32A scene before she she goes up to Palpatine to introduce her to
- 10:37forced lightning prior to the big forced lightning that occurs
- 10:41coming from I'm I'm thinking from a film standpoint at this.
- 10:44You're right, Junction. That's giving them a lot of
- 10:46credit for having foresight. But you know well.
- 10:50I throw them a bone every now and then.
- 10:55That's all they're getting, though.
- 10:58Yeah. I mean it makes sense that well
- 11:00because. Here's how we're going to tie it
- 11:03all back around, all right? Luke had no idea forest
- 11:07lightning existed when he went to fight the Emperor.
- 11:10He was not prepared. He had no clue that it was
- 11:12coming. And and again, it's the
- 11:18novelization for Return of the Jedi says this.
- 11:20Which is not Canon anymore, technically, right?
- 11:25Like, what the fuck? Whatever.
- 11:28Yeah, OK. So in the novelization of Return
- 11:31of the Jedi, it says Palpatine raised his spidery arms towards
- 11:35Luke, blinding white bolts of energy coruscated from his
- 11:38fingers, shot across the room like sorceress lightning, and
- 11:43tore through the boys inside looking for ground.
- 11:46The young Jedi was at once confounded and in agony.
- 11:49He had never heard of such a power, such corruption of the
- 11:53Force, let alone experienced it. But if it was force generated,
- 11:57it could be force repelled. Luke raised his arms to deflect
- 12:00the bolts. Initially he was successful.
- 12:02The lightning rebounded from his touch harmlessly into the walls.
- 12:06Soon, though, the shocks came with such speed and power they
- 12:09coursed over him and into him, and he could only shrink before
- 12:13them, convulsed with pain, his knees buckling, his power to ebb
- 12:17so. He didn't know about it, but
- 12:20also, he's so fucking good as a Jedi and I love him so much that
- 12:24he figured out a way of trying to protect himself.
- 12:27But you know, ultimately Sidious was too strong for him.
- 12:31Yeah, he's got too many years of doing corrupt shit, yeah, to you
- 12:35know. So I don't know, like, why
- 12:40didn't Yoda tell him why? Why?
- 12:43Why let him go into that with no warning?
- 12:46I don't know. I I don't know why was so much
- 12:52left out. I Luke had to.
- 12:54Luke learned the hard way and he's still not a bitter bitch at
- 13:00the end of it, You know what I mean?
- 13:01He still kept his grace about him and that's why we love him.
- 13:05My question is, I mean our question is, was there any harm
- 13:11done? Now let's separate it from
- 13:15physical and mental, because that had to leave.
- 13:18Like to me, I know I don't finish my sentences, but that's
- 13:23because my brain goes faster than my mouth.
- 13:26To me, it seems as though I would wake up with nightmares of
- 13:30this because it is a twisted way of utilizing the Force and it's
- 13:37ugly and it's angry and it's not natural, you know?
- 13:42It's not the way that. Luke and any other good Jedi
- 13:46uses the Force. That shit would haunt me.
- 13:50Absolutely and everything I read said Palpatine is strong enough
- 13:54to kill him immediately and so the fact that.
- 13:56He So he tortured him. Yeah, he didn't kill him.
- 13:59He played with him. I hate that the.
- 14:02Most when it's because Luke was very and I didn't want to use
- 14:06the word proud. That's not what I mean.
- 14:08Like, he was sure of himself. He had declared himself a Jedi,
- 14:11and so Palpatine was like. Here are the consequences of
- 14:15your choice and enjoyed that a little too much.
- 14:18And it it, it just adds like a little bit more evil to it, you
- 14:26know? For sure.
- 14:28I mean, it's mall all over again.
- 14:30It's what mall loved to do, you know, Right.
- 14:33Did mall ever use Force Lightning?
- 14:36I don't think so. I don't think.
- 14:37So but it was used on him. City is.
- 14:42So this is the other thing too, right?
- 14:44So we've seen Mall tortured by cities.
- 14:48We've seen Luke tortured by cities.
- 14:49We've seen Anakin tortured by Duku by multiple times.
- 14:53Oh yeah, multiple times. And like the list goes on, no
- 14:58one has been scarred except for Cidias.
- 15:01Is it because he's the embodiment of what that
- 15:05symbolizes? Yeah, I mean that was my initial
- 15:09thought was that. It revealed his true nature and
- 15:14because. That's.
- 15:14Luke's true nature is goodness. There was nothing to reveal.
- 15:19But that's a theory. There isn't anything in Canon
- 15:23that says that for sure. Some people have said that
- 15:27cities was using a mask, a Sith mask, like they call it Sith
- 15:32alchemy. Where he like because using the
- 15:35dark side over time does corrupt you visibly.
- 15:39I mean you see it in Anakin right away in Revenge of the
- 15:41Sith, right? His eyes turn red and he's very
- 15:44like tormented. Over time it continues to
- 15:48degrade your appearance. And so they said in this article
- 15:53I read that Sidious used Sith alchemy to change himself, like
- 15:56on a molecular level, so that he could continue to look normal in
- 16:00the Senate. And then when he had the Force
- 16:03lightning, it broke the spell. Sort of.
- 16:07I can believe that I just the stuff that Palpatine had going
- 16:12on all at once, at all times. How?
- 16:16How is he not tired just? That that's just.
- 16:23I'm just curious. He's like casting beauty spells
- 16:27on himself. He's He's controlling the
- 16:29Senate. He's controlling the.
- 16:31He could have tried harder with that mask.
- 16:34I know he was trying to come off as an old senator, but come on,
- 16:40you could have done something better with that hair.
- 16:42If you could have chosen anything, that's what you chose,
- 16:44OK? It's it's it's so you can look
- 16:49past it so easily. As not threatening that that's
- 16:53probably why he went with. That's true.
- 16:56You know, whatever. He wants to come across as
- 16:58unthreatening as possible. And he did.
- 17:00You know. But I find it interesting that
- 17:04forced lightning was used on mall, and mall never used it.
- 17:08In return for as angry and pent up and emotional and ragy as
- 17:15Small is he never once like burst into flames or like.
- 17:20Used lightning. He never thought to like play
- 17:25with Satine with forced lightning.
- 17:28I wonder if there was such a part.
- 17:31Like City is just so bad, right? That mall for everything awful
- 17:37that he is. He still had enough in him to be
- 17:39like, you know what, I'm just, I'm just not gonna use that.
- 17:42I'm gonna go with a different route, you know.
- 17:43What I mean, I mean, he had it used on him, so maybe he knew.
- 17:48Yeah, like, I'm not fucking with this.
- 17:50It's a good well, and it could be as practical as the fact that
- 17:53maybe his legs were electrical. Yeah, it's true.
- 17:56It This is true. Yeah.
- 17:58But I'm thinking I just, I'm giving a little credit to mall
- 18:02to be like, you know what, I didn't like that.
- 18:04So I'm just I'm gonna use a different method, you know?
- 18:08But I I do find it interesting, if you want to compare mall to
- 18:11say, Ray, which there is no comparison.
- 18:14I'm just saying in in terms of force lightning, she just burst
- 18:18out with it. And if there's anyone who can't
- 18:20control his rage, it's mall. Because he lives in it, he
- 18:23breathes it, he lives for it and it's all directed at one person.
- 18:29I'm surprised he didn't just like, come out with it.
- 18:33Can help me it? Was just totally electrifying
- 18:36stuff because he couldn't contain it.
- 18:39He would be like that glass ball in a Science Center that you put
- 18:42your hand on and like, you know the one.
- 18:45It's like static. It's like static.
- 18:47It's safe, static, but it's just that's small.
- 18:53Oh my God, that's hilarious. Wait, can we talk about actual
- 18:57lightning? Yes, please, because it has no
- 19:00sense. I was going to say it has no
- 19:01place here. There's nothing about real
- 19:07lightning in the mechanics and physics of lightning that makes
- 19:11any sense in the scifi world, which I I will say I'm 100% OK
- 19:16with. Yeah, some things need to be fun
- 19:19for the sake of being fun, so I'm going to be the opposite of
- 19:23fun right now. So for those of you who don't
- 19:27know, I'm an atmospheric scientist specializing in
- 19:30meteorology, and lightning is a core component of that field.
- 19:34It's a thing. And as a 10 year old child, I
- 19:37read an entire book on electrical charges for fun.
- 19:40Let that sink in. As Hugh says, clacks on alert.
- 19:45Nerd alert. Nerd alert, Thank you Hugh.
- 19:49Sound the alarm. So.
- 19:53Well, honestly, everyone's heard the static electricity
- 19:56comparison, right? It's one charge.
- 19:59There's a negative charge and a positive charge, protons and and
- 20:02electrons. That's essentially what's going
- 20:04on. In a cloud.
- 20:05You have ice crystals and waters, water droplets and all
- 20:09these things rubbing against each other.
- 20:11Because in a cloud, there's an updraft and a downdraft that
- 20:14causes a continuous turnover of the water droplets and ice
- 20:20crystals, depending on how high. In altitude, your cloud grows,
- 20:24so thunderstorms typically can get to about 30 thousand, 40,000
- 20:28feet high in in the atmosphere. So there's a lot of think of it
- 20:32as like a giant column of a bunch of positive and negative
- 20:35charges rubbing against each other that causes essentially
- 20:38static electricity, That's, you know, the charges rubbing
- 20:41against each other, friction, all this stuff, boom,
- 20:44electricity. So you can have three different
- 20:45types of lightning. There's cloud to air because
- 20:50everything has a charge. Everything around you has a
- 20:52charge. You can have cloud to cloud, so
- 20:55within a cloud or an adjacent cloud, the positive and negative
- 20:58charges. Or you can have cloud to ground.
- 21:01Something on the ground has the charge that connects to like a.
- 21:05Person like a person. Now here's where it gets really
- 21:08interesting. Lightning doesn't just strike
- 21:11straight down, it ignites a charge from the bottom.
- 21:16So let's say the person on the ground connects to the lightning
- 21:20in the cloud. A little tiny charge will go
- 21:23upwards out of you like forced lightning, and connect with the
- 21:28lightning bolt. Now it's so tiny that it looks
- 21:30like a lightning bolt just strikes the ground right?
- 21:33Like straight down from top to bottom.
- 21:34But there is a tiny charge that comes up from you and it
- 21:38connects. Oh, that's so crazy.
- 21:40I never knew that. Well, it happens so fast that
- 21:43sometimes if you have the right camera at the right time, you
- 21:46can see it. It's a little it comes up and
- 21:48meets. That's crazy.
- 21:52Here's where I want to put it into Return of the Jedi.
- 21:55You know, let's let's bring it back to Star Wars.
- 21:58They say they being us, the scientists, if you're standing
- 22:06on the ground, you have a better chance of surviving than if
- 22:09you're laying on the ground. So think of Luke, right?
- 22:12Sidious goes after him with the forced lightning and he lays
- 22:14down. He would have had more of a
- 22:16chance of dying right there on that floor laying down then he
- 22:20would have if he was standing up.
- 22:22And the reason is you have two points 2 feet on the ground.
- 22:25You have two points for the the charge to to discharge out of
- 22:29you. So it's split if you're laying
- 22:31on the ground the distance between your head and your feet.
- 22:34It has to come out right. There's a longer path, so it
- 22:37it's 1.1 point to end and one point to the other end, and in
- 22:41doing so it would like go through your entire.
- 22:44So it's just burning holes through you?
- 22:46Is that the whole? Is that what you mean, Traveling
- 22:49so fast that it would have more damage caused because it's going
- 22:53through all of you instead of just down through Because the
- 22:55lightning wants to get out of whatever it's hitting as fast as
- 22:58possible, so you have to have a way.
- 23:00That's why some places have lightning rods on the top of
- 23:03their their you know that you wanted to hit and completely go
- 23:06out before it has a chance to travel down the length of the
- 23:09entire whatever, right? So if you can disperse that
- 23:13charge in the proper manner, you have less damage.
- 23:16So if Luke's laying on the ground, and I believe it was a
- 23:19metal floor, Vader would have been crisped right up with him.
- 23:24The whole thing is a wash. So with the Emperor then,
- 23:27wouldn't he? Because it would be the the
- 23:31whole. So this is very interesting.
- 23:33Look it up if you want. If you've never seen a ground
- 23:36charge, if a lightning bolt hits a field, it will spread out like
- 23:41like fingers. Like thin lightning fingers.
- 23:44And that's how cows in an adjacent field end up dying from
- 23:48a lightning strike that doesn't hit them directly, but the
- 23:51charge moves through the ground and goes through the first thing
- 23:54that it can. That's that's bleak.
- 23:59So Insidious would have went down with them.
- 24:03So the whole thing is so crazy to me.
- 24:07But I'm fine with it. Like I said, I'm fine with it
- 24:09because it's it's science, it's fun, it's science fiction, it's
- 24:12play time, it's make believe, whatever, right?
- 24:17I do wonder if I may just play around with this a little bit
- 24:21with the thought of Luke on the ground.
- 24:24What if the Force wraps you in a protective like like so?
- 24:29It doesn't. That's travel.
- 24:31That's the thought I had too. Yeah, yeah, I'm just playing
- 24:35around with an idea here that the Force works in mysterious
- 24:38ways, we'll say. And if and Luke blocked it for a
- 24:42time, he did a fairly good job of blocking it for a time.
- 24:46For not knowing any of this, for not being told any of this did
- 24:52pretty good. But what if the Force?
- 24:55Like it's got to dissipate somehow?
- 24:58So I wonder if the force is part of that.
- 25:01Yeah, I mean, if if lightning in Star Wars is the physical
- 25:06manifestation of the Force. Then there's got to be a way
- 25:09like Yoda literally just absorbed it into his hand,
- 25:13right? Right.
- 25:14Wild. There's a term for it, and I
- 25:16cannot pronounce it. It's the Star Wars term called
- 25:20Tuta Manus or something like that, and it's it is definitely
- 25:25a Legends thing officially, but it is, quote an umbrella title
- 25:29used by the Jedi Order to classify Force abilities related
- 25:32to energy absorption. So yeah, even as initiates,
- 25:38they're taught this technique. But of course, you know this is
- 25:42on a much larger scale, which is why Yoda can do it.
- 25:46It's wild that Yoda can even do that.
- 25:48I mean, what a boss. That little.
- 25:51That little thing. Well, think about it like like
- 25:55if you go with real science, matter and energy can neither be
- 25:58created nor destroyed. So that had to go somewhere, I
- 26:03know that. That's why I'm wondering, is the
- 26:04Force helping with it? Because it's got to be
- 26:07discharged in some manner. It has to go somewhere into
- 26:13Yoda's little three fingers, like I don't.
- 26:16It was his gimmer stick with his grounding rod.
- 26:18It was the gimmer stick. It's a it's a lightning rod.
- 26:21It functions as a fucking lightning rod.
- 26:26Oh God. He walked around with it, just
- 26:27in case, and he went to Dego Ba, which is the most stable
- 26:32atmosphere I've seen in a planet.
- 26:36There is no it's constant Stratus.
- 26:39We'll say there's no, you know, giant storms brewing.
- 26:42So he went to the one place where it was stable enough that
- 26:44he didn't have to worry about it.
- 26:48Number electrifying or electrocuting?
- 26:52We haven't even talked about how hot lightning is.
- 26:55Well, yeah, the heat alone. This.
- 26:57This shit's nuts. 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit, or 30,000 degrees
- 27:02Celsius. You're dead.
- 27:07Yeah, like there's no way that Lucas survived this in real
- 27:11life. No way in hell.
- 27:12So it has to be the force. He doesn't have a scar, He
- 27:15doesn't have anything. He's able to get up and go over
- 27:18to his father. Yeah, because even if you
- 27:21survive a lightning strike, don't you have a burn entry and
- 27:24exit like you have usually a hole in your toe and like one on
- 27:27your finger or something like that?
- 27:29Well, black fingernails, You know, it has to.
- 27:32It's, it's singes. You.
- 27:34Yeah. It literally burns you up, yeah.
- 27:37So in Legends. Actually I had never knew this
- 27:41because I haven't read that many Legends books, but apparently
- 27:44forced being hit with forced lightning actually makes you
- 27:48sick, like compromises your immune system.
- 27:51So Luke actually got really sick after Return of the Jedi in
- 27:56Legends books. Makes total sense to me.
- 27:58You. Know what I mean?
- 27:59Like the fact that he has like kill the biomes.
- 28:02Of right you gut. The poor man would have diarrhea
- 28:05for weeks. Sorry Luke, I just outed all of
- 28:12your intestinal problems post return of the job I.
- 28:15Prefer to just believe he was just fine, Nothing was wrong?
- 28:19Oh no, he was fine. He didn't poop his pants.
- 28:21There's no Vader. Dannis.
- 28:27God. That's not true, because they're
- 28:31like far jokes in every Star Wars movie, which I find really
- 28:33disappointing. But that's just me.
- 28:38There is no pooping in Star Wars.
- 28:39There isn't. Is that our new motto?
- 28:44Yes. There's no pooping in Star Wars.
- 28:45There isn't. Star Wars is pain and there's no
- 28:48pooping. in Star there's no pooping.
- 28:53How did How did this go from fucking forced lightning to
- 28:58pooping one's pants, we have raised the new.
- 29:03My mom is turning this off right now.
- 29:09We apologize to all the parents out there.
- 29:13Not a fan of poo jokes, but this is making me laugh pretty good,
- 29:16so maybe I well, listen, it's science, right?
- 29:20You would think if someone got hit with that much freaking
- 29:22lightning. Everything be fucked.
- 29:26Totally. And and and we talked about it
- 29:28at the panel in London about the Thunder aspect because when you
- 29:32have that much heat separating the air literally separates the
- 29:37air comes back together. Bang, that's Thunder.
- 29:40They don't be too like just it'd be a cacophony of, you know,
- 29:45constant invaders helmet would be ringing and so there's a lot
- 29:49going on. That's why Vader killed the
- 29:50Emperor. He couldn't take the noise
- 29:52anymore. He couldn't take it.
- 29:54It's too long. No, no, it's too much noise.
- 30:01God, I'm too old for this. So something that I did think of
- 30:08because they were saying that in order to have forced lightning,
- 30:11you need to have been struck with forced lightning in
- 30:13Legends. Yeah, it made me think of
- 30:15stories I've heard of people who are struck multiple times by
- 30:19lightning throughout their lives where it's like.
- 30:22You get hit once and then your probability of getting hit again
- 30:25goes up and it's crazy. I heard some reason like this
- 30:28guy got hit like 12 times and like his wife left him because
- 30:31she was too afraid to be near him because he got hit all the
- 30:34time. It's crazy.
- 30:37I get that. That's that's a walking static
- 30:40charge. Again, it's I don't, I don't
- 30:42have an answer for any of that. I think it's fascinating though,
- 30:45because I do know someone in my field related to my field who
- 30:52was hiking and got hit by lightning and I think he got hit
- 30:56twice. Holy shit at the same time, but
- 30:58like 2 hikes he went on. That's.
- 31:01My question is, hold up. You ever hear the old phrase
- 31:05when Thunder roars go indoors? Why are we out hiking when
- 31:09there's a chance for lightning? I'm just asking.
- 31:12Well, I have heard of people getting hit by lightning, like
- 31:14in their kitchen doing dishes during the store.
- 31:16Yeah, I mean, if you have the charge and you're in the right
- 31:20place at the right time, you're not stopping it.
- 31:21However, if you're out and your hair on your arm unexplicably
- 31:25starts to stand up, get somewhere safe.
- 31:28It's a good sign that something's.
- 31:30That's good to know. That's a good trick.
- 31:32What about like someone like me who has a window in their
- 31:35shower? I I think the chances are so
- 31:38low, honest to God. But water is not a great thing
- 31:42to be in when there's lightning. So I would just, you know, wait
- 31:4410 minutes, wait, no, shit's going down.
- 31:48We were the storm to pass before you take a shower.
- 31:50Yeah, just just just to be on the safe side.
- 31:53I mean, it's one of those things is just like the chances are so
- 31:57low and yet there are so many deaths and I see it out here all
- 32:02the time. We get storms and we hear about
- 32:04entire fields of cows just being killed.
- 32:07It's so sad. It's very.
- 32:09I never knew that. I guess it makes sense.
- 32:12It's not like you can bring your livestock in if they're out
- 32:14grazing out in a really huge field.
- 32:16That would be very difficult to do at the last minute, you know,
- 32:20warning of a storm. So it's it's pretty.
- 32:23And then there's the thing called the bolt from the blue,
- 32:26which is the storm could be many, many miles away.
- 32:30And a lightning bolt can and will reach out many, many miles
- 32:35away from the center of the storm where there's the most
- 32:38charge and still strike someone like people on a beach have
- 32:43reported. It was clear around me and we
- 32:46got hit by lightning and it's like, how the hell does that
- 32:49happen? But it can't happen.
- 32:50Well, I'm never, never leaving my house again, so that's good.
- 32:53I mean, this is not, that's not to say don't leave your house
- 32:56again. I'm just saying like, you can be
- 32:58smart and be prepared. And if it's if you got the
- 33:02charge, there's no, there's no stopping it, just just have to.
- 33:07Be safe. It just means Palpatine was
- 33:09ready for you and it's your time.
- 33:12Yeah, he's looking, He's watching, yeah.
- 33:15And he's aiming. Palps blame Palps.
- 33:21Yeah, everything is always his fault.
- 33:23Always. Somehow Palpatine is returned.
- 33:35So our question for you this week, It's pretty
- 33:38straightforward. Why do you think Luke was not
- 33:41scarred by forced lightning? There is no cannon answer, so
- 33:44just tell us your thoughts. Like make up something.
- 33:47I don't care. Just yeah.
- 33:49Yeah. Do you think the Force had
- 33:51anything to do with it, or is it just pure Luke?
- 33:54Yeah, he's the purest form of Luke Skywalker being pure.
- 33:59Exactly. Or anybody who's been hit by
- 34:01Force lightning. It doesn't have to be Luke.
- 34:03What's the theory? Tell us your thoughts.
- 34:08Oh, next week is special. Next week's episode is very
- 34:12special. It's Lauren interviewing.
- 34:16Just author extraordinaire Beth Revis is joining the Most Things
- 34:25Kenobi show. I unfortunately was unable to
- 34:28make the recording for this, and I will forever be very sad that
- 34:33I was unable to make this. So you want to give your
- 34:37thoughts on the next week's episode?
- 34:39I mean it was it was sad to do it without you.
- 34:41I was definitely like having to re prepare myself quickly.
- 34:45But it was cool. She gave us a lot of insight on
- 34:48what it's like to write for Star Wars.
- 34:51She got to. Read the Rogue One script before
- 34:55anyone else. She told me all about that.
- 34:57It was really cool. We talked about the Princess and
- 35:00the Scoundrel. We talked about her new book
- 35:03that's coming out called Night of the Witch, which sounds
- 35:06fucking awesome and is based on a real historical event that I
- 35:09had never heard of and a lot of people had never heard of.
- 35:12So that was really fun to talk about it.
- 35:14So yeah, I'm really excited to share this because.
- 35:18Not only is it cool to get that insight, but for anybody who's
- 35:21creative or anyone who has a dream, she talks about how she
- 35:24became a Star Wars writer or just a published author in
- 35:27general. It was.
- 35:28It's a really. I think it was a really
- 35:29inspiring conversation, so I'm excited to share it with
- 35:32everyone. I'm excited to listen because I
- 35:35wasn't there, so I'm tuning in as a fan of you and Beth, so I
- 35:40can't wait. Please join us next week and
- 35:42give Beth Revis the love that she absolutely deserves.
