Lines to Christmas

"Lines to Christmas" is a self-aware, humorous poem that skewers the annual ritual of producing obligatory Christmas verse. Monte Sohn's narrator wryly observes that while fashions in cars, hats, and war change with each passing year, Christmas poetry never does — editors expect it, bards dutifully deliver it, and most of it is cheerfully lame. Caught between satirical contempt and affectionate surrender, the speaker ultimately joins the very tradition he mocks, raising a toast to Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
