Transcript
- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern,
- 0:10and let's jump into today's quote from Herbert Kaufman, who
- 0:14once said the habit of persistence is the habit of
- 0:17victory. Notice what Kaufman doesn't say.
- 0:21He doesn't say talent is the habit of victory.
- 0:24He doesn't say genius or luck or natural ability.
- 0:29He says persistent, and he calls it a habit.
- 0:32That's the key insight. Persistence isn't something you
- 0:36summon up for the big moments. It's something you practice
- 0:40daily until it becomes automatic.
- 0:43Most people think persistence means gritting your teeth and
- 0:46pushing through when things get hard.
- 0:49That's part of it. But that's not the habit part.
- 0:53The habit is showing up when nothing dramatic is happening,
- 0:56when progress is invisible, when nobody's watching, when you
- 1:01don't feel like it. The habit is doing the work.
- 1:05On day 47 of 100 Day Goal, when the excitement is worn off and
- 1:10the finish line still feels impossibly far away.
- 1:14That's when most people quit. Not because the goal is
- 1:17impossible, but because persistence isn't a habit yet.
- 1:22It's still an effort. But for people who've made
- 1:25persistence a habit, Bay, 47 is just Tuesday.
- 1:30They show up because that's what they do, not because they're
- 1:33motivated. Because it's a habit.
- 1:37And here's what Kaufman understood.
- 1:39If you build the habit of persistence, victory becomes
- 1:43inevitable. Not immediate.
- 1:45Inevitable because you will outlast anyone who quits.
- 1:49You will outlast the setbacks. You will outlast your own
- 1:53doubts. Victory doesn't go to the
- 1:55fastest or the smartest, it goes to the one who refuses to stop.
- 2:01And I have first hand experience with this with this very
- 2:05podcast. It was a little bit challenging
- 2:08to do a Daily Show every single day, but now I'm on episode 754.
- 2:14Publishing an episode every day for 754 days sounds like a lot,
- 2:21but once you get in the habit, it's just something that
- 2:23automatically happens at the end of the day.
- 2:26So here's the question. What goal are you pursuing?
- 2:30And have you made persistence a habit yet, or is it still an
- 2:34effort? Because if you can make
- 2:37persistence automatic, victory becomes inevitable.
- 2:41You just have to outlast everything else.
- 2:45That's it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 2:48for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 2:51Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
