- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Almost Famous podcast with iHeartRadio.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Okay, so joining us today. This is Bob and Trista
- 0:08Speaker 2: for Almost Famous Ogs and in preparation for the big
- 0:14Speaker 2: premiere on Wednesday, and with the show starting, I'm trying
- 0:19Speaker 2: to get all of my fellow castmates on Special Forces
- 0:24Speaker 2: World's Toughest Test to come on and chat about the experience.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And Nathan, you're our number our second guest, and I'm
- 0:32Speaker 2: I'm so oh was for Stephen. Stephen Baldwin came on
- 0:37Speaker 2: and she added with us and I'm so excited to
- 0:43Speaker 2: have you, I mean, hello, talk about a career and
- 0:47Speaker 2: the perfect kind of preparation for this season of Special Forces.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I mean in a way, in a little.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Bit at least from the previous I'm seeing. Yeah, you've
- 0:58Speaker 3: got a definitive, a definitive upswing for your the first
- 1:03Speaker 3: things that they're showing on the previews. Man, it's such
- 1:05Speaker 3: a pleasure to meet you. And can you say thanks
- 1:08Speaker 3: for your service to an Olympian? I think you can, right.
- 1:11Speaker 4: I don't know, I mean they're probably not super well
- 1:13Speaker 4: deserved compared to those in the courses. Yeah, I mean
- 1:18Speaker 4: it was the privilege was truly online. I mean like
- 1:22Speaker 4: I still kind of pinch myself, like what, like I
- 1:27Speaker 4: got to live this life and like just chase my
- 1:30Speaker 4: dreams and then like live it as like.
- 1:32Speaker 5: A professional for a while. It was insane.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Yeah, well, my wife was very excited that I'd be
- 1:37Speaker 3: in I'm Bob by the way, so nice to meet you.
- 1:39Speaker 3: So my wife was very excited that I'd be interviewing
- 1:42Speaker 3: you today because she's also a cal Berkeley grad.
- 1:45Speaker 5: Gore's excellent years.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yes, she's much younger than me. So she just turned forty.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm even allowed to say that,
- 1:51Speaker 1: but so she would have.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Been I don't even know what years that would have been,
- 1:55Speaker 3: to be honest, early two thousands.
- 1:57Speaker 5: I think.
- 1:57Speaker 4: And we may we definitely we probably know people who
- 2:01Speaker 4: know we have mutual connections, but I probably missed each
- 2:05Speaker 4: other a little bit.
- 2:06Speaker 5: I think.
- 2:06Speaker 3: So, Yeah, she was a skiing snowboard team person and
- 2:10Speaker 3: I did not know that.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's so crazy.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah, she was in there.
- 2:15Speaker 4: The ski snow team they are like they are incredible,
- 2:19Speaker 4: Like the fact that they can somehow pass their classes
- 2:21Speaker 4: with the schedule that they run through in the winter,
- 2:23Speaker 4: it's just like, give me a break. They drive up there,
- 2:26Speaker 4: they ski and snowboard, then they don't sleep, and then
- 2:29Speaker 4: they ski and snowboard again, and they drive it back
- 2:31Speaker 4: and I'm like.
- 2:32Speaker 5: It's insane.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yeah, they it's I mean, she loved it, like I
- 2:36Speaker 3: absolutely loved it. You know, her memories of being there
- 2:38Speaker 3: are pretty spectacular. So we always whenever we're you know,
- 2:41Speaker 3: in northern California, we got to swing by campus and
- 2:43Speaker 3: then we go to that that little downtown area which
- 2:45Speaker 3: is right near you guys. It has like the pizza
- 2:47Speaker 3: place where they just tell you what the pizza is
- 2:49Speaker 3: today and that's what you're eating.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Ye sliver. Yeah, Oh my god, I love that place.
- 2:54Speaker 3: There's like a line around the corner every day and
- 2:56Speaker 3: you know you got to get there at like nine
- 2:57Speaker 3: am to get pizza by noon, and it's crazy.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's a great place. It's a great, great place.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Well, thank you for joining us.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So we want to talk to you, obviously about special
- 3:09Speaker 2: Forces and all that in entails. Even though we can't
- 3:14Speaker 2: talk about what specifically happens and how long people stay
- 3:19Speaker 2: and those kind of things, but we can talk about
- 3:21Speaker 2: the details and so much that people saw in the trailers.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Holy cow, Yes, first. I mean I was like, oh
- 3:29Speaker 2: my gosh, they're showing that. So so I would love
- 3:34Speaker 2: to know how you got asked And did you know
- 3:37Speaker 2: anyone going on the show before you got there?
- 3:41Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, good question. It just came through my agent.
- 3:45Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm going to go out on a limb
- 3:47Speaker 4: here and say it probably wanted Michael to join, but
- 3:51Speaker 4: my agency is the agency that represents me as the
- 3:55Speaker 4: same agency that actually the same agency that represents him
- 3:58Speaker 4: represents me.
- 3:59Speaker 5: I don't know which way I knew. I need a
- 4:00Speaker 5: phrasey yeah, I just I just taggle on for the ride.
- 4:03Speaker 5: I'm sure he had something else exciting going on.
- 4:06Speaker 4: And they're like, but hey, we had this other guy that's,
- 4:08Speaker 4: you know, pretty good at swimming too, So how we
- 4:10Speaker 4: take a look.
- 4:13Speaker 5: And that's kind of how it came through.
- 4:15Speaker 4: And you know, at first, like we had we still
- 4:19Speaker 4: have two young kids, and we're like, wait, how many
- 4:21Speaker 4: days on the road, Like that's like kind of a
- 4:24Speaker 4: logistic like pretty pretty difficult. My wife's like she also
- 4:28Speaker 4: is like has a full time job, So like we
- 4:32Speaker 4: weren't really quite sure if it was gonna, you know,
- 4:35Speaker 4: fit our family, and then it just like we kind
- 4:40Speaker 4: of pieced it together, figured out we had a lot
- 4:42Speaker 4: of wonderful help and grandparents and things to you know,
- 4:47Speaker 4: give me the chance to go and have that awesome experience.
- 4:51Speaker 5: So yeah, that's that's how I kind of came through.
- 4:53Speaker 4: And I think I'm really interested to hear how everybody
- 4:58Speaker 4: kind of did this because everybody's timeline.
- 5:00Speaker 5: I think we're pretty different. I had.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I had a pretty good amount of time, plenty of
- 5:06Speaker 4: time to prepare obviously, Like you know, I'm used to
- 5:08Speaker 4: these four year cycles, So if I had four years
- 5:10Speaker 4: to prepare, I would, but you know, I had something
- 5:13Speaker 4: like two months or something like that, So it was it.
- 5:15Speaker 5: Was still goodat for me.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that it is. It is something the preparation,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and I wish I would have done more of it because,
- 5:27Speaker 2: as you know, for me, the really the hardest part
- 5:31Speaker 2: of this whole experience was the in between the tasks
- 5:35Speaker 2: running with our burken our rocks, whatever you want to
- 5:39Speaker 2: call them, running with those giant things on our backs.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And for you it's I mean, you're what six three six.
- 5:46Speaker 6: Four six sixty six.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Okay six three dwarfs when you're when you're that tall,
- 5:54Speaker 2: I'm five to two so you know, it's six three
- 5:56Speaker 2: sixty six whatever it is. Well, when you're six six
- 6:01Speaker 2: and you're carrying a thirty five pound pack, it's probably
- 6:04Speaker 2: not as traumatizing to your body as it is for
- 6:11Speaker 2: a five to two, you know, smaller person. But gosh,
- 6:16Speaker 2: that was the hard part for me. And you know
- 6:18Speaker 2: that because you helped me. Oh my gosh, he's one
- 6:21Speaker 2: of my angels, Bob, he helped me.
- 6:23Speaker 5: I love it.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I mean he was literally holding my hand or my own.
- 6:27Speaker 5: I'm so drying. No, it's so kind.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I know, man, I'm glad you were there for her, sir,
- 6:32Speaker 1: thank you.
- 6:33Speaker 5: It really is like they're not pulling me punch us, you.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Know, like people like people are thinking like, hey, maybe
- 6:41Speaker 4: they'll like adjust it for me or you know, well
- 6:45Speaker 4: we'll try to try to make it a little bit different,
- 6:48Speaker 4: but it's just like no, and like.
- 6:50Speaker 5: They it's just it is what it is. Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I mean, I weigh two hundred and thirty pounds walking
- 6:55Speaker 4: around normally, so like a forty pound rucksack is really
- 6:57Speaker 4: a pretty not It's not like by any means, but
- 7:00Speaker 4: it's a pretty insignificant, like percentage of my body weight
- 7:03Speaker 4: compared to someone who's smaller than me. Like, if you
- 7:07Speaker 4: really were to scale that up, I mean, I'd be
- 7:08Speaker 4: carrying over one hundred pounds or something.
- 7:10Speaker 5: So it's not.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I mean I felt for some of the smaller competitors,
- 7:18Speaker 4: just competitors, I don't know, I don't know, participants everybody, right,
- 7:23Speaker 4: just a competition is like as cheesy as it sounds, like,
- 7:27Speaker 4: this is definitely like a competition against yourself.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Like there's just no way to remove the cheesiness from that.
- 7:35Speaker 5: But it's like so.
- 7:35Speaker 2: True, totally so true. It is so true, and I
- 7:39Speaker 2: like that it's you know, like within yourself because you
- 7:43Speaker 2: really have to push yourself for yourself. That's kind of
- 7:48Speaker 2: one of the things that I was drawn to the
- 7:50Speaker 2: show about because if it was a competition against each other,
- 7:55Speaker 2: I knew I would be like, Okay, well I'm going
- 7:57Speaker 2: to be the slim Pickens, I'm going to be the
- 7:59Speaker 2: last one. Show isn't at the playground, you know, Like,
- 8:04Speaker 2: but the fact that we can do this for ourselves
- 8:06Speaker 2: and have this opportunity. You're so right, you you worded
- 8:09Speaker 2: it perfectly.
- 8:10Speaker 5: I'm just curious.
- 8:11Speaker 3: You know, you said something earlier that I thought was
- 8:13Speaker 3: really interesting when you said you had like two months
- 8:14Speaker 3: to prepare and and I don't know, I don't actually
- 8:18Speaker 3: know Trista what your timeline was.
- 8:19Speaker 5: But how do you prepare?
- 8:22Speaker 3: Like are you just is it one of those things
- 8:24Speaker 3: where you know, especially for you as an olympian, are
- 8:27Speaker 3: you focusing on the things that you don't do every day?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Because I mean, obviously you you know, a swimming situation
- 8:33Speaker 3: is not gonna you know, You're not gonna be a
- 8:34Speaker 3: struggle for you. So are you just thinking about like
- 8:36Speaker 3: every like movie you've ever watched, like Platoon, and you're like, Okay,
- 8:39Speaker 3: I'm gonna hike hills.
- 8:41Speaker 5: I'm kind of you know, like what do you do?
- 8:42Speaker 1: I don't even know how to prepare?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I wish I would have been more thoughtful about it,
- 8:46Speaker 4: to be honest, I really I personally was most concerned
- 8:49Speaker 4: about the running part because I am a horizontal athlete,
- 8:53Speaker 4: Like I am so used to being in the pool
- 8:56Speaker 4: in like a weird, like kind of like role buoyancy
- 9:00Speaker 4: situation that might like joints are not really made for
- 9:05Speaker 4: being vertical and carrying that load that rock would have
- 9:07Speaker 4: definitely if I didn't prepare for those two months, my
- 9:10Speaker 4: knees and hips would have been really messed up even
- 9:12Speaker 4: after a couple of days.
- 9:14Speaker 5: So I did. I did that, and I kind of
- 9:16Speaker 5: like I progressively overloaded it.
- 9:17Speaker 4: You know, I only started with you know, rocking around
- 9:20Speaker 4: for a mile and took a day off, and then
- 9:22Speaker 4: I went another mile and then like increased that load
- 9:25Speaker 4: until it just wasn't that big of a deal anymore.
- 9:29Speaker 4: But then the other training, I mean, I just stayed
- 9:33Speaker 4: in shape, knowing that like you know, I have, I
- 9:35Speaker 4: have a pretty robust like cardiovascular and pulmonary system that
- 9:40Speaker 4: I built up over thirty years of swimming that would hopefully.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Carry me through. And yeah, I do, I do wish
- 9:49Speaker 5: I would have.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Like looking back and trying not to you know, give
- 9:54Speaker 4: give anything away, but like probably should talk to some
- 9:57Speaker 4: more people and like designed like different scenarios based off
- 10:02Speaker 4: of their experience, or like found a coach.
- 10:05Speaker 5: That was like prepared. It's really like, you know, I
- 10:10Speaker 5: found someone who was maybe.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Training people or like special horses or Navy seal like
- 10:14Speaker 4: X Navy sealers preparing the next generation of that, and
- 10:17Speaker 4: be like kind of get a little bit of that
- 10:18Speaker 4: because it really is so different than sports, right, the experience,
- 10:27Speaker 4: and I think that there was no way of me
- 10:30Speaker 4: knowing that without experiencing it, So yeah, I should have
- 10:35Speaker 4: done a better job of asking for help.
- 10:48Speaker 2: I was asked. I think it was in February and
- 10:52Speaker 2: we left in May, and but I don't know if
- 10:57Speaker 2: we talked about this, bob. But medically they were not
- 11:00Speaker 2: going to clear me because yeah, so like a month in,
- 11:06Speaker 2: maybe a couple of weeks in, I went through like
- 11:08Speaker 2: the medical clearance and I've had lower back surgery affusion,
- 11:14Speaker 2: and they kept saying, well, we just don't know if
- 11:18Speaker 2: you're going to be able to how would you be
- 11:22Speaker 2: getting pushed off a boat? Is what they were telling me.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And I was like, what do you mean like a
- 11:27Speaker 2: moving boat? I don't know if anyone's going to be
- 11:29Speaker 2: well okay with that? So basically I had to fight,
- 11:34Speaker 2: Like I got doctors who did my surgery involved saying
- 11:39Speaker 2: like like telling them the medical guys over in the
- 11:42Speaker 2: UK because the production company is over in the UK,
- 11:47Speaker 2: telling them, you know, she's fine, she's great, she had
- 11:52Speaker 2: this surgery and now she's amazing, she was better than
- 11:54Speaker 2: she was before kind of thing. And so during that
- 11:58Speaker 2: time when I was it was questionable, I actually stopped training,
- 12:03Speaker 2: which I shouldn't have. I am so superstitious, and I
- 12:09Speaker 2: was like, I'm not going to train because then they're
- 12:12Speaker 2: not going to prove me to go on the show.
- 12:14Speaker 2: So I totally screwed myself and those moments that I
- 12:19Speaker 2: just mentioned, like Nathan was one of my angels, the
- 12:22Speaker 2: running part, because I've never been a runner. I was
- 12:26Speaker 2: fifty one when we filmed. Like, I haven't been working
- 12:29Speaker 2: out consistently. You know, I'm not an olympian, I'm not
- 12:33Speaker 2: an ex NFL guy. I'm not a pro serf for like,
- 12:37Speaker 2: all of these people that were on the show have
- 12:39Speaker 2: like some kind of athletic background. Even Ali was crushing
- 12:44Speaker 2: it in the gym before, like she was working out
- 12:46Speaker 2: three times a day.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Wow.
- 12:49Speaker 2: And anyway, so I share that sentiment Nathan in that
- 12:54Speaker 2: I should have. Obviously I should have still been training
- 12:58Speaker 2: when they were when we were going through the stuff
- 13:01Speaker 2: to get me approved but are cleared. But yeah, I
- 13:07Speaker 2: just wish I would. And I actually talked to a
- 13:10Speaker 2: few people, actually two people who had been on the show,
- 13:13Speaker 2: Hannah Brown, who was also a bachelorette, and then Body
- 13:17Speaker 2: Miller is friends of friends of friends of mine, and
- 13:21Speaker 2: he was at an event and so I got to
- 13:23Speaker 2: talk to him in person, and he thought that they
- 13:28Speaker 2: were going to change the relativity of the weight of
- 13:35Speaker 2: the of the rocks for people. He was like, they've
- 13:38Speaker 2: talked about changing the weight, so maybe they would make it,
- 13:43Speaker 2: you know, less of an issue for the smaller people.
- 13:46Speaker 2: But obviously that did not change.
- 13:53Speaker 5: You know.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But you know, part of me is like, yeah, I,
- 13:57Speaker 2: in all fairness, yes, but I have two friends who
- 14:01Speaker 2: are Navy Seals. They were on Seal Team six, like
- 14:03Speaker 2: they're legit, and one of them is still kind of
- 14:08Speaker 2: involved with Navy Seals. And he said that a lot
- 14:11Speaker 2: of women don't make it through Special Forces just for biology,
- 14:17Speaker 2: like the way that our bodies are shaped, and we're
- 14:19Speaker 2: usually smaller, and you know anyway that women don't necessarily
- 14:26Speaker 2: do well in the Special Forces because of just the
- 14:29Speaker 2: like how our bodies are made. So I feel like,
- 14:33Speaker 2: if we truly were going to Special Forces training, they're
- 14:36Speaker 2: not going to freaking change anything for women, So why
- 14:39Speaker 2: should we get any special treatment?
- 14:41Speaker 7: You know?
- 14:42Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, that's two sides of that coin. I mean
- 14:46Speaker 5: it just like it just would have been I think
- 14:51Speaker 5: it would have been nice to.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Special Forces is hard in so many different ways, right, Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 4: so many different ways, but you would have experienced something
- 15:01Speaker 4: that was extraordinarily difficult if that rock was only twenty
- 15:04Speaker 4: five pounds for you instead of forty, Like, yeah, I
- 15:07Speaker 4: definitely believe that. So for the sake of, like, you know,
- 15:11Speaker 4: the narrative and the storyline, maybe, But but then again
- 15:15Speaker 4: there is another aspect where it's like when people ask me,
- 15:18Speaker 4: are like how do people ask you all the time?
- 15:20Speaker 5: Like is it real? Is it? Like? Are they how
- 15:24Speaker 5: serious is it?
- 15:24Speaker 4: And I'm like they like made it feel and like
- 15:28Speaker 4: the second that you exited the show, did it feel
- 15:30Speaker 4: like you came out of the matrix?
- 15:35Speaker 5: Like what's going on?
- 15:36Speaker 3: No?
- 15:36Speaker 5: Honestly, like when you are.
- 15:38Speaker 4: In there, you are like we are the only freaking
- 15:41Speaker 4: people around. There are only cows. When you're in there,
- 15:44Speaker 4: you just feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.
- 15:46Speaker 4: It is only you and like the DS and and
- 15:50Speaker 4: you're like fellow people on special horses. And then like
- 15:54Speaker 4: the second you're done, it's like, oh, there's a car
- 15:58Speaker 4: like a Mercellan.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Are you tips and stuff?
- 16:04Speaker 7: Like there's like hundreds of us all over here in
- 16:08Speaker 7: this tent that's just completely hidden and we're just making
- 16:12Speaker 7: absolutely zero noise somehow from everybody that's in the show.
- 16:17Speaker 5: It is. It is a trip, man, it is a trip.
- 16:20Speaker 2: You're right. But it's very similar to like all reality.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Like I literally just did an interview for a girl
- 16:26Speaker 2: yesterday whose friends were actually friends and friends. I don't
- 16:30Speaker 2: need to get into it, but she's doing something a
- 16:32Speaker 2: thesis project, and so she was asking all these questions
- 16:34Speaker 2: of reality television and how real is it? And you know,
- 16:37Speaker 2: all the same questions that everyone asks. And it's the same,
- 16:42Speaker 2: like there are producers who are walking around on Bachelor, Bachelorette.
- 16:45Speaker 2: You might be on a helicopter in a fancy date
- 16:48Speaker 2: and not a helicopter that you're jumping onto from a
- 16:51Speaker 2: moving boat. But but it is. It is very much unscripted,
- 16:57Speaker 2: like you have certain as like dates on Bachelor, like
- 17:02Speaker 2: that you're going, you know, you're going to these tasks
- 17:05Speaker 2: and the cameras are just following you. The drones, I'm
- 17:08Speaker 2: sure there were drones. Were there drones? Do you remember
- 17:10Speaker 2: if there were drones?
- 17:11Speaker 5: Oh, there had to be some of the camera angles
- 17:13Speaker 5: that even the previous drones.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, so oh actually I think I do remember.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Do you remember the drones? The for I'm not giving
- 17:22Speaker 2: anything away. The very first day on the boat before
- 17:27Speaker 2: the ship went down, I remember drones coming over the
- 17:31Speaker 2: boat and we were like, oh, shit's about to get real,
- 17:34Speaker 2: Like we got cameras.
- 17:36Speaker 5: That's funny. I do remember that. I do remember that.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, crazy, So that's insane. That was what was
- 17:42Speaker 2: the hardest part for you, because obviously it's not just physical.
- 17:47Speaker 2: There's there's the whole mental part, emotional.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I feel like, yeah, man, without trying to give anything away,
- 17:55Speaker 4: I feel like I was just starting to hit my
- 17:56Speaker 4: groove because I was just so nervous and trying to
- 17:58Speaker 4: figure out feel everything going on, like right at the beginning,
- 18:03Speaker 4: and like there's just this like weird thing because I
- 18:07Speaker 4: just have not experienced that much, like adrenaline just constantly coursing.
- 18:10Speaker 5: To my veins and like a long time, really long time,
- 18:13Speaker 5: and it was just so like.
- 18:17Speaker 4: It was like in the Olympic world. It's so acute
- 18:20Speaker 4: and you learn to manage it. Like you are four
- 18:23Speaker 4: hours out from your Olympic final race. It's like you're
- 18:26Speaker 4: letting it come up. You're letting it. You're letting this
- 18:28Speaker 4: excitement enter your body, experience it, experience it, let it
- 18:33Speaker 4: hour you essentially, and then the moments after that race,
- 18:38Speaker 4: like everything you do is to shut it off, Like
- 18:40Speaker 4: it's kind of like a dimmer switch. You're gonna like
- 18:42Speaker 4: you're gonna go warm down, You're gonna do like some
- 18:44Speaker 4: breath work, you're gonna do like all.
- 18:46Speaker 5: These different things to get your body in like the
- 18:47Speaker 5: recovery mode.
- 18:48Speaker 4: But like this whole thing, Like for me, I was
- 18:51Speaker 4: just freaked out the whole time.
- 18:52Speaker 5: I was worried about them yelling at us. I was
- 18:54Speaker 5: worried about like getting.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Like getting like caught out in the middle of the
- 18:57Speaker 4: night doing this, doing that, Like I I didn't learn how.
- 19:01Speaker 4: I didn't like practice that skill of like kind of
- 19:04Speaker 4: calming down after like the craziness.
- 19:06Speaker 5: And then like.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Towards like the end of my time there is like
- 19:09Speaker 4: when I started realizing, oh, like you know, the car
- 19:13Speaker 4: rides are you know, relatively calm, Like as long as
- 19:17Speaker 4: I'm semi ready and like my rough is packed, like
- 19:20Speaker 4: I can close my eyes, I can kind of relax
- 19:22Speaker 4: just a little bit do what I can.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Did you ever feel like you could, Were you ever
- 19:27Speaker 2: packed and ready and you felt like you could close
- 19:29Speaker 2: your eyes? Because I could never fee I never felt that.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I don't.
- 19:33Speaker 5: I was closed. Honestly.
- 19:34Speaker 4: At one point, I was like, I am not sure
- 19:37Speaker 4: that the perfection that they like can come to expect
- 19:42Speaker 4: is even possible. Was like maybe just maybe they really
- 19:48Speaker 4: just choose to like punish us when they want to
- 19:51Speaker 4: there it's too easy.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Right now, I'm gonna I'm gonna find something, and like
- 19:56Speaker 5: it's not possible. Time my shoes right over left and
- 20:01Speaker 5: like someone else tied their left over right like okay,
- 20:04Speaker 5: punish ups like we deserve it.
- 20:06Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Like I kind of I I eventually kind
- 20:09Speaker 4: of came to that conclusion.
- 20:10Speaker 5: Maybe I'm wrong, but that's that's where it came for me. Yeah,
- 20:15Speaker 5: And to your point, I mean I definitely did not.
- 20:17Speaker 4: I did not, like I would call any of the
- 20:20Speaker 4: times that like my eyes were closed at.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Night, like just like meditation, not so much actual sleep.
- 20:26Speaker 5: It was just like not even close to real real sleep.
- 20:30Speaker 5: I yeah, not, I didn't.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Was it because you were just like thinking they're going
- 20:35Speaker 3: to wake you up, so you didn't even want Like
- 20:37Speaker 3: I'm like that when I have an early morning flight.
- 20:39Speaker 4: You know, I truly didn't know what to expect. I mean,
- 20:41Speaker 4: there was just so many emotions going through your head. Man,
- 20:44Speaker 4: this is such a cool experience. I wonder what's going
- 20:45Speaker 4: to happen next. Oh my god, are they going to
- 20:47Speaker 4: crush us?
- 20:47Speaker 5: Like?
- 20:48Speaker 4: Wait, is that like someone's snorting right now? Oh, is
- 20:50Speaker 4: somebody getting up to the feet Like, Oh, the cameras
- 20:53Speaker 4: haven't moved.
- 20:53Speaker 5: But are they still on? You know, all the all.
- 20:56Speaker 4: The different things that like that just go through your
- 20:59Speaker 4: head that you just there's just it's a lot. We're
- 21:03Speaker 4: also in this big side there's like rat I'm sure
- 21:05Speaker 4: there were mice and rats and spiders everything.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Oh everywhere everywhere. But I have to point out, so
- 21:13Speaker 2: Nathan six ' six and we're laying on standard cots.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Did you didn't have like an extended cot, did you?
- 21:21Speaker 4: I think cam and I I can't remember, but I
- 21:25Speaker 4: think they might have put like an extra like egg
- 21:27Speaker 4: crate or something apple crate at the end of it.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Maybe, yes, yes, the crates at the end of the bed.
- 21:34Speaker 2: And weren't you guys like you guys were across from each.
- 21:36Speaker 5: Other each other? Yeah, we were across.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, like because because I'm tiny and I
- 21:42Speaker 2: can just crawl up in a ball pretty much anywhere,
- 21:46Speaker 2: but for someone who's six ' six and being able
- 21:50Speaker 2: to sleep on those cots is hard regardless. So if
- 21:53Speaker 2: you're larger than the cot, can't be that fun, you know.
- 21:58Speaker 5: And you guys are all on the same like bear
- 22:00Speaker 5: type situation. You're on that same little room.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and you couldn't leave unless you had a buddy.
- 22:07Speaker 5: That's right, that's right again. One of those things that
- 22:10Speaker 5: I mean I meant to ask. I meant to ask
- 22:12Speaker 5: at the reunion, like did that loosen up or not?
- 22:15Speaker 4: Because like officially you were not you were not supposed
- 22:17Speaker 4: to leave without a buddy, But at least those first
- 22:19Speaker 4: couple days you.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Could kind of get away with it a little bit.
- 22:21Speaker 5: People started getting a little bit looser with it. They
- 22:24Speaker 5: kind of like scurry and do their thing.
- 22:27Speaker 2: I know, I know. I was always like, oh crap,
- 22:29Speaker 2: because I am such a rule follower, and I was like, no,
- 22:32Speaker 2: don't get us in trouble by leaving on your own.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Don't go pee by yourself. You always had to have
- 22:39Speaker 2: a buddy. So we were in this one room was
- 22:41Speaker 2: our barracks or what they call it accommodations, and then
- 22:46Speaker 2: there was like a kind of like a like a
- 22:49Speaker 2: workout area if you will in the middle. But it
- 22:51Speaker 2: wasn't a workout area. It's like torture chamber, you know, Yeah,
- 22:55Speaker 2: the mud pit. And then there's a warming room because
- 22:59Speaker 2: we were in way hills and we were constantly wet,
- 23:02Speaker 2: and so you had to like you had two sets
- 23:04Speaker 2: of clothes and you had to keep one of them
- 23:06Speaker 2: dry at all times, so you had to keep those
- 23:08Speaker 2: in the warming room. And to get like prime real
- 23:11Speaker 2: estate is like worth a lot in the warming room
- 23:15Speaker 2: because there's like three little what do you call them,
- 23:18Speaker 2: like little fire pit stove, Yeah, and they to get
- 23:25Speaker 2: a place by those was like, you know, you're fighting
- 23:28Speaker 2: for your life just to get your clothes.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Dry, and you're like you're balancing this thing where like
- 23:34Speaker 4: you want to get it really close to the stove,
- 23:35Speaker 4: but you don't want to lay on fire.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Socks, especially putting the socks over the like the stove
- 23:45Speaker 2: door on the door.
- 23:49Speaker 3: I mean, everybody, that just sounds brutal to me.
- 24:00Speaker 2: What did your kids think? Did you tell your kids
- 24:03Speaker 2: before you left or did you wait when you got back?
- 24:06Speaker 2: And how how do they feel do they know about it?
- 24:09Speaker 2: How do they feel about it now?
- 24:10Speaker 5: But too young? I mean, my yes was just a
- 24:14Speaker 5: little over three at the time, so yeah, yeah, it
- 24:17Speaker 5: was just kind of like Dade was gone for a
- 24:19Speaker 5: little bit. The youngest probably didn't.
- 24:21Speaker 4: The youngest definitely, like I'm kind of the default parent
- 24:24Speaker 4: to the youngest one, so she missed me a lot.
- 24:31Speaker 4: But yeah, and I talk too, because even Wednesday, like
- 24:34Speaker 4: when this like when the premiere comes out, I'm we're
- 24:37Speaker 4: gonna they're not really old enough to watch it either,
- 24:41Speaker 4: go do some of these things.
- 24:44Speaker 5: So I think it's really just going to kind of
- 24:45Speaker 5: be in the back pocket.
- 24:47Speaker 4: You know, when the time is right, maybe we'll sit
- 24:49Speaker 4: down and we'll we'll watch it and uh and see
- 24:52Speaker 4: what they think then how about you.
- 24:57Speaker 2: I so all my my whole I mean, my kids
- 25:00Speaker 2: are older, obviously, they're fifteen and seventeen. So I talked
- 25:05Speaker 2: to them about it before because when I was trying
- 25:08Speaker 2: to figure out whether or not to do it, I
- 25:13Speaker 2: wanted to know what my kids thought. And my son
- 25:16Speaker 2: especially was like, cool, like you know, go do that,
- 25:19Speaker 2: that'd be cool. He actually is interested in going into
- 25:23Speaker 2: the military possibly after high school, so and Navy Seals,
- 25:27Speaker 2: And I honestly wonder because that is like a recent
- 25:33Speaker 2: discovery about him that he wants to go into the
- 25:36Speaker 2: Navy seals, and it was one of his hockey buddies.
- 25:40Speaker 2: His dad was a Navy seal, and that's where I
- 25:44Speaker 2: think it started. But I wonder if doing this show
- 25:47Speaker 2: maybe inspired him. I'd love to, you know, it'd be interesting.
- 25:52Speaker 4: I certainly think at least a little bit, and maybe
- 25:54Speaker 4: some of the research that he did.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Watching the other I mean, the other.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Season still give me goosebumps, Like if I ever like
- 26:00Speaker 4: if I'm ever like hurting, like walking on like one
- 26:03Speaker 4: of those days that you don't want to wake up
- 26:05Speaker 4: and go to the gym, like on the way there,
- 26:07Speaker 4: you just throw it on. It's ten minutes of it.
- 26:09Speaker 4: It's just a little bit little little goose Yeah, I
- 26:14Speaker 4: know this, I mean, this is going to be I
- 26:15Speaker 4: didn't realize that the episode is gonna be two hours.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Two hours, yes, so each episode is two hours and
- 26:22Speaker 2: they're only doing five episodes. So I think that's why
- 26:26Speaker 2: they did a two hour show. But if you think
- 26:30Speaker 2: about it, so Bob and I being from the world
- 26:32Speaker 2: of reality television, it's you know, part of our normal
- 26:35Speaker 2: uh vernacular. If you're will, if you will. But but
- 26:40Speaker 2: they they put so much on the cutting room floor,
- 26:42Speaker 2: Like two hours is really is so minimal compared to
- 26:46Speaker 2: what we experienced, Like, I really wonder what will make
- 26:50Speaker 2: the show Jesus past.
- 26:51Speaker 1: How many episodes did they do?
- 26:53Speaker 5: Was it always two hours? Five? I do think it's
- 26:56Speaker 5: usually one hour per day? Is that right? Yeah?
- 27:01Speaker 2: Okay, I think so. I think they usually have one
- 27:03Speaker 2: hour episodes and it's ten episodes. Okay, so this time
- 27:08Speaker 2: they just it's the same amount of time. It's just
- 27:11Speaker 2: a longer episode in one yeah, yeah.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Just I think to your point, like I am, I'm
- 27:16Speaker 4: so curious because like the way that everything happened, like
- 27:20Speaker 4: it wasn't a linear timeline though, like people dropping out, it.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Was like insanity.
- 27:26Speaker 4: And then I think they're the slowed down a little
- 27:28Speaker 4: bit so they might be able to dilate that time
- 27:30Speaker 4: that everyone was there just a little bit to kind of.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Tell the stories because there were so many, so many
- 27:34Speaker 5: interesting ones. But how they do it, I'm not I
- 27:38Speaker 5: don't know. You got you all know if it's possible
- 27:41Speaker 5: a lot better than I do.
- 27:53Speaker 3: I would think, Like the biggest fear that people have
- 27:55Speaker 3: a lot of times when they see themselves on TV
- 27:57Speaker 3: is you know what they're doing in that moment right
- 28:00Speaker 3: like oh my god, Like you know, if you're if
- 28:02Speaker 3: you're like look at the camera and you got you know,
- 28:04Speaker 3: like stuff running out of your notes or.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Something, you got something in your teeth.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:07Speaker 3: So like when you saw yourself and you saw when
- 28:09Speaker 3: you saw the package they put together for you, were
- 28:11Speaker 3: you you know, were you like happy about it or
- 28:14Speaker 3: did you look at it and you're just like, oh
- 28:15Speaker 3: my god, it looks so bad, or you know, cause
- 28:17Speaker 3: you're used to seeing yourself on the on the podium
- 28:19Speaker 3: getting a gold medal.
- 28:20Speaker 5: You know.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Man, I actually just add of necessity, I stopped watching
- 28:26Speaker 4: my own interviews, stopped watching myself on the podium. I
- 28:28Speaker 4: just experienced it through myself because I really I dialed
- 28:32Speaker 4: in how to compete, how to train, how to how
- 28:36Speaker 4: to do my swimming thing, Yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 5: As perfectly as I could.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And there were a couple of experiences where I was
- 28:42Speaker 4: paying attention to what was going on the outside, I
- 28:45Speaker 4: was being perceived et cetera that affected me and I'm like,
- 28:48Speaker 4: what what what Like that's completely out of my control.
- 28:52Speaker 4: So I stopped paying attention and and for this, honestly,
- 28:56Speaker 4: I I was going to ask you all, like how
- 28:58Speaker 4: how to do it like for me or do just
- 29:02Speaker 4: everybody have their own different way that they that they
- 29:04Speaker 4: watch because like I am going to do like a
- 29:06Speaker 4: little viewing party with some close friends and I was like, no,
- 29:08Speaker 4: I don't want to do this massive thing, Like I
- 29:10Speaker 4: don't want like every person from preschool there at the
- 29:13Speaker 4: same time, like like maybe just some of my closest
- 29:17Speaker 4: friends who see me in like vulnerable situations and been
- 29:21Speaker 4: there through through those tough times, just because like you know,
- 29:25Speaker 4: for me, it's it's it's like there's a personal aspect
- 29:28Speaker 4: of it there, like and on top of that, like
- 29:30Speaker 4: they had footage from US twenty four to seven. They
- 29:35Speaker 4: can make us look whatever they want, so it is
- 29:39Speaker 4: for me, I don't know. I'm just kind of walking
- 29:42Speaker 4: through it with like an open heart and open mind,
- 29:45Speaker 4: kind of kind of putting my trust in like the
- 29:47Speaker 4: producers and just.
- 29:48Speaker 5: Saying it is, it is going to be what it is.
- 29:52Speaker 4: And then even if it's a perception that I don't
- 29:54Speaker 4: necessarily agree with or love, like I'm going to be
- 29:58Speaker 4: with those who know me the best, who know that
- 30:02Speaker 4: well they love me for some reason, and it's it's
- 30:08Speaker 4: not because there are lots.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Of reasons yeah, I think that's a great perspective to have.
- 30:12Speaker 2: I can share the same thing. But I think that's
- 30:15Speaker 2: how you get through it is you know deep down
- 30:18Speaker 2: who are your people and who love you, and they're
- 30:21Speaker 2: always going to love you no matter how you look
- 30:23Speaker 2: on this show. You know, the show will be temporary,
- 30:26Speaker 2: It'll come and go. People get hyped about it, and
- 30:28Speaker 2: then you know, twenty years later they might still be
- 30:32Speaker 2: talking about it. But as when it comes to my wedding.
- 30:35Speaker 2: But and you know all that. But but I think
- 30:40Speaker 2: as long as you stay grounded in your truth and
- 30:42Speaker 2: why you did it, and and I don't think you
- 30:45Speaker 2: can look bad on this show. I'm just going to
- 30:47Speaker 2: say that I don't think you can look bad.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll tell you as someone who's not been on
- 30:52Speaker 3: it or not gone through what you guys have gone through.
- 30:54Speaker 3: But I definitely have seen the previews, and I've seen
- 30:57Speaker 3: elements of the show in the past.
- 30:58Speaker 1: I will definitely be watching this one, by the way.
- 31:01Speaker 3: But I think you have to write that's the right
- 31:03Speaker 3: recipe for sure, Like whenever you put yourself out there,
- 31:06Speaker 3: you know you're going to have the people who would
- 31:07Speaker 3: never be in that situation in a million years who
- 31:09Speaker 3: are going to have opinions about it. So, like you said,
- 31:11Speaker 3: you put your blinders on and stay focused and you know,
- 31:14Speaker 3: on your family, your friends, the people that you love.
- 31:16Speaker 5: And don't worry about the rest of the noise. Right.
- 31:18Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, it's like, I
- 31:20Speaker 3: think it's a different world today than when Trista and
- 31:23Speaker 3: I were both you know, on the Bacherette and then
- 31:25Speaker 3: The Bachelor. It's like, you know, nowadays, it's like everything
- 31:28Speaker 3: is out there, you know, it's like and it's all,
- 31:31Speaker 3: like you said, twenty four hours of footage and you're
- 31:33Speaker 3: gonna have something in your teeth, You're gonna have something
- 31:34Speaker 3: on your face. I mean, you guys are in the
- 31:36Speaker 3: middle of it all, you know, going through the most
- 31:38Speaker 3: brutal training and everything that anyone's ever done. So I
- 31:41Speaker 3: think from that perspective, it's going to be amazing viewing,
- 31:45Speaker 3: like from a from a viewership perspective. And I just
- 31:48Speaker 3: I have nothing but admiration for everyone that signed up
- 31:51Speaker 3: to do this show because I'm looking at it from
- 31:53Speaker 3: the standpoint of, man, could I put myself out there
- 31:56Speaker 3: and do that? And I mean I've known Tristan for
- 31:58Speaker 3: twenty years and It's like when she told me she
- 32:00Speaker 3: did it, I'm.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Like, oh my god, how could you do this? Like
- 32:03Speaker 5: this is insane?
- 32:03Speaker 3: D you know because in my mind I'm like, would
- 32:07Speaker 3: I do it if they asked me? I want to
- 32:08Speaker 3: believe I would, but part of me is like, I
- 32:11Speaker 3: don't think I could get through it, man, I mean,
- 32:13Speaker 3: you know, I just don't think I could.
- 32:15Speaker 5: So I can only.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Imagine what you guys are going to be experiencing emotionally
- 32:18Speaker 3: watching it too.
- 32:19Speaker 1: So it's gonna be awesome for y'all.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I think I think it will be.
- 32:23Speaker 4: I don't know, like, did you like did you have
- 32:27Speaker 4: you been to a place emotionally in your like real
- 32:31Speaker 4: life in the last ten years where you were there?
- 32:34Speaker 7: Wow?
- 32:35Speaker 2: I was not. I have never been challenged emotionally like
- 32:38Speaker 2: that in my entire life. The only thing that comes
- 32:41Speaker 2: close is it took me a really long time to
- 32:47Speaker 2: get pregnant. That was hard. I had a really difficult
- 32:50Speaker 2: delivery with my first and then I had a seizure
- 32:55Speaker 2: about seven years ago on vacation. It's we don't even
- 32:59Speaker 2: need to get into it, but that that the seizure
- 33:03Speaker 2: was probably like because it was like I and I
- 33:06Speaker 2: could have died in my delivery too, but I faced
- 33:09Speaker 2: it like I actually have a whole thing where I
- 33:14Speaker 2: think it was a near death experience because I went
- 33:16Speaker 2: to this place of white euphoria and it. Yeah, so
- 33:21Speaker 2: I feel like I was very close to death in
- 33:23Speaker 2: that moment. And that is the only comparison, because I
- 33:29Speaker 2: feel like you are pushed so freaking hard on the show,
- 33:33Speaker 2: and not just like in trying to keep up in
- 33:37Speaker 2: like the guy's yelling at you. You know, you see
- 33:41Speaker 2: in the trailer where Q is like right next to me,
- 33:44Speaker 2: like and I've told people about this, how I'm trying
- 33:48Speaker 2: to get out of the beach. I'm trying to leave
- 33:50Speaker 2: and he is literally right there being like you shouldn't
- 33:53Speaker 2: be here, hurry up. Everyone's waiting for you, like all
- 33:56Speaker 2: you know, all the things and all the things that
- 33:58Speaker 2: I'm already telling myself in my head like I shouldn't
- 34:02Speaker 2: be here. I'm a burden, like all you know, all
- 34:04Speaker 2: of these things. But I think that's why they do it.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Tell me if you feel the same way, because so
- 34:13Speaker 2: in the trailer, you hear me say, you know, I'm
- 34:15Speaker 2: talking to my devil and my angel on my shoulder,
- 34:18Speaker 2: right and so human nature. It's human nature. I feel
- 34:23Speaker 2: like to doubt yourself. You're gonna have these doubts, like
- 34:28Speaker 2: the devil is constantly saying, you can't keep up with everybody,
- 34:33Speaker 2: You should not be here. Why are you doing this show?
- 34:35Speaker 2: This is stupid, you know, And so you're telling yourself
- 34:38Speaker 2: all of these things already. I think that they tell
- 34:43Speaker 2: you those things as not inside your body. They're telling
- 34:47Speaker 2: you so that you can say, Hugh, I'm gonna I'm
- 34:52Speaker 2: gonna prove you wrong, and so you can find an
- 34:55Speaker 2: inner strength to fight against somebody else, because it's really
- 34:58Speaker 2: hard to fight against your self sometimes. But if you
- 35:02Speaker 2: can put that like onus, on somebody else and be like,
- 35:05Speaker 2: screw off, I'm gonna I'm gonna prove you wrong and
- 35:08Speaker 2: I'm going to do this. How what's your What are
- 35:10Speaker 2: your thoughts on that?
- 35:12Speaker 5: That's I love that. I think we probably we have
- 35:15Speaker 5: really similar thoughts.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Ex that mine just come from this place of like
- 35:18Speaker 4: physical performance, because that's like my entire life and like
- 35:21Speaker 4: the lens of that through which I see everything.
- 35:24Speaker 5: And honestly I'm trying I'm.
- 35:26Speaker 4: Trying to kind of shift that perspective into maybe like
- 35:29Speaker 4: more like real life things parenting and running business and
- 35:35Speaker 4: all those sorts of things. But like for me, I
- 35:38Speaker 4: mean there was just like I really had I after retiring,
- 35:42Speaker 4: I didn't really realize.
- 35:44Speaker 5: Like how much I missed having a coach.
- 35:46Speaker 4: And like and I like journaled for like a day
- 35:50Speaker 4: or two afterwards, and just like because I whatever whatever
- 35:56Speaker 4: after I was, I can't because it kind of gives away.
- 36:00Speaker 2: When I when I understood, but.
- 36:04Speaker 4: I really realized that, Hey, like I along with other people,
- 36:07Speaker 4: and I don't know if it's if it's to a
- 36:09Speaker 4: greater degree than anybody, but a told people pleaser and
- 36:12Speaker 4: then like once you find a safe place to be
- 36:15Speaker 4: that because like in real life you're kind of like
- 36:17Speaker 4: people pleaser. But like am I like is this too much?
- 36:21Speaker 4: Is this like not enough? Like is this weird balance?
- 36:24Speaker 5: Like you're driving and you're like should I have like
- 36:26Speaker 5: let that person go in front of me or not?
- 36:28Speaker 6: Like wait a minute, you know, and like but in
- 36:32Speaker 6: this situation, it's just like I, I mean, I trusted
- 36:36Speaker 6: the DS with my life, and I believed them when
- 36:39Speaker 6: they said that they could bring you to a place
- 36:42Speaker 6: that you've never been before.
- 36:44Speaker 4: And I think those two things like really brought me
- 36:46Speaker 4: to a place where I was like, holy crap either right,
- 36:49Speaker 4: like it.
- 36:50Speaker 5: Was it was crazy. I mean in one of the.
- 36:52Speaker 4: One of the moments, like I was carrying a log
- 36:55Speaker 4: by myself and.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Like Billy was screaming at me to like brody, and
- 37:00Speaker 5: I was like like turn it on the turbo.
- 37:02Speaker 4: And then I was like wait, hold up, like yet,
- 37:05Speaker 4: like that's crazy because for me, I thought I was
- 37:07Speaker 4: running as fast as I could Billy told me to
- 37:09Speaker 4: turn on the turbo. But then there was it was
- 37:12Speaker 4: a little devil in my head that was like yo,
- 37:14Speaker 4: like you turn on the turbo too much, like.
- 37:16Speaker 5: You know what can happen?
- 37:17Speaker 4: And I think, like you talking about body a little bit,
- 37:20Speaker 4: Like that's that's where my mind went because like a
- 37:23Speaker 4: lot of the athletes do have this ability to like
- 37:25Speaker 4: to go turbo a little bit to the point where
- 37:28Speaker 4: they're going to hurt themselves.
- 37:29Speaker 5: So I like I turned it on. I started catching him, and.
- 37:32Speaker 4: Then I was like wait, hold on, Like that was
- 37:34Speaker 4: a really cool thing, but like we're we're not done
- 37:36Speaker 4: here yet. We might have like an hour or two
- 37:39Speaker 4: longer of this, like let's just get this log too
- 37:42Speaker 4: over there. But like that moment actually really sticks with me.
- 37:47Speaker 4: As I like reflect on my time, then I'm like,
- 37:50Speaker 4: in a way, I'm like, yeah, like I still got it,
- 37:52Speaker 4: like that that little like extra gear is still there
- 37:56Speaker 4: and it is so hard to reach when you're in
- 37:59Speaker 4: a gym and where I work out.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Isn't necessarily a lot of young people.
- 38:05Speaker 4: That I go or something like I just don't have that,
- 38:09Speaker 4: and like having that like oh that's right, like let's
- 38:14Speaker 4: fucking go kind of spirit mentality was just so refreshing
- 38:21Speaker 4: because the grind and absolute marathon of parenting two young children,
- 38:28Speaker 4: you don't have a lot of the LFG moments except
- 38:31Speaker 4: for like LFG exercise your patience more tonight.
- 38:36Speaker 5: I mean like last night, I think bedtime.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Took like over two hours and I slept on a
- 38:39Speaker 4: twin bed speaking of a cot just because we're having
- 38:43Speaker 4: some issues with climbing out of cribs and things.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I have like LFG moments all the time for
- 38:50Speaker 3: like bluey marathons and things like that, so I get it.
- 38:53Speaker 5: At least it is blue. Oh my gosh, we had
- 38:55Speaker 5: to make the transition to blue. Like gosh, that's a
- 38:57Speaker 5: whole other topic that we could talk about forever of
- 39:00Speaker 5: the programming. That just automatically pops up now is absurd.
- 39:05Speaker 4: It's just like it's drugs and is drugs for my kids,
- 39:09Speaker 4: and like I we try not to do. We just
- 39:12Speaker 4: finished the holidays, Like forgive me sorry, I let them
- 39:15Speaker 4: have some screen time, but like we've got to re
- 39:17Speaker 4: let back in. Holy crap some of that. Yeah, it's
- 39:20Speaker 4: just wild.
- 39:21Speaker 2: That's hard to do too, Okay. I love your perspective,
- 39:26Speaker 2: and I feel like that is so true that had
- 39:31Speaker 2: like thinking about that moment where Q is just yelling
- 39:34Speaker 2: his head off at me, and I'm going, I'm crying
- 39:38Speaker 2: the whole time, but I'm going, had it been real life,
- 39:43Speaker 2: totally would have stopped and been like Ryan, can you
- 39:45Speaker 2: carry my backpack?
- 39:47Speaker 5: You know?
- 39:47Speaker 1: And and I'll.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Get there when I get there, and I'm not going
- 39:51Speaker 2: to cry about it, you know. But you're so right
- 39:53Speaker 2: that I think that is one of my learning lessons
- 39:56Speaker 2: looking back, and I love that. That's kind of what
- 39:59Speaker 2: you've taken away too, is that you do have the
- 40:03Speaker 2: capability to push yourself harder than you ever thought you could, right.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Yes, yes, and like figuring out how to get there
- 40:10Speaker 4: because you can't go there every.
- 40:11Speaker 5: Day, you know.
- 40:12Speaker 4: That's that is how burnout happens, but like figuring out
- 40:15Speaker 4: for yourself how you get yourself there and then what
- 40:18Speaker 4: you need to do to recover it. When I talked
- 40:20Speaker 4: to kids, all so I do. I still do canceling
- 40:22Speaker 4: clanks for for swimmers all the time. And when I
- 40:24Speaker 4: talked to I was like, it's the turbo button.
- 40:26Speaker 5: It really is.
- 40:26Speaker 4: It's like and and like I don't even know if
- 40:28Speaker 4: that's still a thing on like PIFA, Like I'm talking
- 40:31Speaker 4: about NBA JAM like two thousand and two. At this point,
- 40:35Speaker 4: you got to figure out when you can press the
- 40:37Speaker 4: turbo button, and then you got to figure out what
- 40:39Speaker 4: fills your turbo.
- 40:40Speaker 5: Button back up again, you know. And and I think.
- 40:43Speaker 4: That was you know, that that was a we were
- 40:46Speaker 4: we were in full on turbo mode there.
- 40:47Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, but I feel like the turbo button
- 40:50Speaker 2: was being pushed by somebody else and it was all
- 40:53Speaker 2: on all the time.
- 40:55Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, there was something like it was like those
- 40:58Speaker 8: the time that we were spent just like you were
- 41:01Speaker 8: learning so much about yourself and how to get there
- 41:03Speaker 8: and how to experience it and.
- 41:05Speaker 5: How to harness the power of it. But like then yeah,
- 41:10Speaker 5: when it's over, I'm like I'm good I'm good.
- 41:17Speaker 1: No more turbo button needed for I'm good.
- 41:20Speaker 2: I don't need a turbo button, no more, No more
- 41:23Speaker 2: turbo button for me. Yeah, And I feel like that's
- 41:27Speaker 2: just how you get as you get older, too. And
- 41:29Speaker 2: so since I'm fifty one, I don't know I think
- 41:32Speaker 2: Stephen is the oldest. Denise might. I think she's around
- 41:35Speaker 2: my same age, but and I don't know how old
- 41:38Speaker 2: Mary it is. Anyway, my point was maybe I'm the oldest. No,
- 41:42Speaker 2: I don't think I'm the oldest, but I feel like
- 41:43Speaker 2: you have that kind of perspective, like I've lived my life,
- 41:46Speaker 2: you know, I'm good, I'm setting my ways, like I
- 41:49Speaker 2: know what I like, I know what I don't like,
- 41:51Speaker 2: and running is something I don't like, and I'm doing
- 41:54Speaker 2: a lot of it.
- 41:55Speaker 3: And I was going to ask too, like especially for you, Nathan,
- 41:59Speaker 3: on this will because I think this might be and
- 42:02Speaker 3: I hope this doesn't come off sexist, but it might
- 42:04Speaker 3: be a guy thing. But like I always think like
- 42:07Speaker 3: the Navy Seal team stuff as like the ultimate badassery
- 42:12Speaker 3: out there, you know what I mean. So it's like
- 42:13Speaker 3: in my mind, I mean, I watch every one of
- 42:16Speaker 3: those shows, right, I watch you know, Jack Ryan, and
- 42:19Speaker 3: I watch you know, every everything that comes out.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Any movie that's got anything to do with it, I'm
- 42:22Speaker 1: on it.
- 42:23Speaker 3: And so when I like get curious about this stuff
- 42:25Speaker 3: is because part of me thinks, like I always watch
- 42:28Speaker 3: the show. My wife laughs at me all the time,
- 42:29Speaker 3: she go, Okay, so now you think you're a spy.
- 42:32Speaker 3: I'm like, yes, I think I could be a fantastic spy.
- 42:34Speaker 3: And so I'm gonna watch this show and I'm gonna
- 42:36Speaker 3: be like, oh my god, I could I want to
- 42:38Speaker 3: do this, like I want to see if I can
- 42:40Speaker 3: do Was there any of that going into it where
- 42:43Speaker 3: you were just so fired up to see, you know,
- 42:46Speaker 3: especially having been an Olympic decorated Olympian thing like I
- 42:49Speaker 3: got this, man, I'm gonna I'm gonna print that I
- 42:51Speaker 3: can do this.
- 42:52Speaker 5: All day every day. Man, Yes, all of it, all
- 42:55Speaker 5: of it. Yes, of course, of course, no doubt.
- 42:57Speaker 4: And that was like just waiting for the next challenge
- 43:00Speaker 4: and like experiencing it and going through it and like
- 43:05Speaker 4: oh man, like it's just like it's kind of like
- 43:07Speaker 4: a little puzzle, like oh I mess up on this.
- 43:09Speaker 5: But next time I'm going to do this, I'm gonna
- 43:11Speaker 5: be better. Okay, next, next up, I'm a little bit better.
- 43:13Speaker 5: I'm a little bit better. I'm a little bit like the.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Same little thing in my head that just like made
- 43:17Speaker 4: me tick for swimming and doing it so long. It
- 43:21Speaker 4: was the same thing that kept me going in this too.
- 43:24Speaker 4: It was just like I do I want to figure
- 43:25Speaker 4: out how to get better, get better, get.
- 43:27Speaker 5: Better, like learn from learn from others around me.
- 43:30Speaker 4: I think that was like, you know, for me in
- 43:32Speaker 4: like two thousand and eight, my experience at the Olympics
- 43:35Speaker 4: was so interesting.
- 43:36Speaker 5: I was young.
- 43:36Speaker 4: I think I was the youngest male on the team.
- 43:38Speaker 4: I was nineteen years old. I swam a pre LNS
- 43:43Speaker 4: relay for the for one of the events, so I
- 43:46Speaker 4: wasn't I'm not going to say it wasn't important. But
- 43:49Speaker 4: without me there, the metal count wouldn't have changed at all.
- 43:54Speaker 4: But like, I got to see so many people do
- 43:58Speaker 4: extraordinary things and do it in so many different ways,
- 44:01Speaker 4: and I actually like think that I had a lot
- 44:05Speaker 4: of that same kind of those same kind of feelings
- 44:07Speaker 4: here where we just came from so many different aspects
- 44:10Speaker 4: of life, but every single person there was so extraordinary and.
- 44:14Speaker 5: Like I think, like I don't know just what would
- 44:17Speaker 5: you say, Like was the.
- 44:18Speaker 4: Like when you're like, what what do these people have
- 44:21Speaker 4: in common?
- 44:22Speaker 5: Like what is it? And I think I have an answer,
- 44:24Speaker 5: but I kind of want to hear yours first.
- 44:26Speaker 2: That's really interesting. I feel like I always felt like
- 44:32Speaker 2: going through the interview process that the reason that they
- 44:36Speaker 2: chose me, because clearly they're not choosing me to be
- 44:38Speaker 2: that badass Navy seals person, but I feel like they
- 44:43Speaker 2: were picking me at least. And I think this goes
- 44:46Speaker 2: for everybody, that people out there can relate to each
- 44:50Speaker 2: one of us in different ways. So for me, I'm
- 44:53Speaker 2: the like, you know, the mom of teenagers about to leave,
- 44:58Speaker 2: figuring out what I want to do with my life
- 45:01Speaker 2: when they're gone, and you know, everyone has their story,
- 45:05Speaker 2: so I feel like it's we're all relatable in some way,
- 45:09Speaker 2: shape or form, and we're just relatable in different ways.
- 45:13Speaker 5: I like that.
- 45:15Speaker 4: I think that's that's I think that's definitely true. And
- 45:18Speaker 4: I think for me, I was I really am so
- 45:22Speaker 4: taken maybe not taken back, but like I'm just inspired
- 45:27Speaker 4: by everybody's agency in their life with everybody there, I think,
- 45:31Speaker 4: and it's like I think it really is for me,
- 45:34Speaker 4: and like, you know, there's I forgot who who wrote
- 45:37Speaker 4: the book, but is his thesis and his parentise was like,
- 45:41Speaker 4: it's luck.
- 45:41Speaker 5: It's it's luck.
- 45:42Speaker 4: You know, successful people is lucky. It's like, look, there
- 45:48Speaker 4: certainly plays a.
- 45:50Speaker 5: Part in this. You know, I wouldn't have, you know, Olympic.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Gold medals in my closet if I didn't hit some
- 45:56Speaker 4: you know, genetic like luckiness in my in my life.
- 45:59Speaker 4: But there was an aspect of like taking advantage of
- 46:02Speaker 4: that luck. And I think each and every one of
- 46:04Speaker 4: us were able to do that in our lives. And
- 46:06Speaker 4: I thought that's seeing the different like the different ways
- 46:10Speaker 4: that it happened was just so so cool and being
- 46:14Speaker 4: able to like.
- 46:15Speaker 5: Be around it, like, you know, I wish I was
- 46:19Speaker 5: just told spend more time together.
- 46:21Speaker 2: I totally agree. I have been pushing for them, like
- 46:25Speaker 2: I'll talk to publicity. So I'm leaving today to go
- 46:28Speaker 2: to LA to do a like a little bit of
- 46:31Speaker 2: press also, and and I'm like, I just want to
- 46:34Speaker 2: get people together, Like I keep asking if we can
- 46:37Speaker 2: get people together, could we do like a a reunion
- 46:41Speaker 2: for the for the finale, And maybe if they don't
- 46:44Speaker 2: put it together, maybe we should just do it on
- 46:46Speaker 2: our own, Like wherever we do it, maybe we should
- 46:49Speaker 2: just do it on our own, because like on our
- 46:50Speaker 2: text thread, you know, Christy was like, I'm having a viewing,
- 46:54Speaker 2: you know, screening, and I'm having one too, actually here
- 46:57Speaker 2: on Wednesday. Mine's a little bigger than like just close friends.
- 47:01Speaker 2: It'll probably be like one hundred people or something. And
- 47:03Speaker 2: I think the Fox affiliate is coming from Denver. So
- 47:08Speaker 2: if this was Ryan on the show, my husband, it
- 47:12Speaker 2: would be totally different. But like you said, we're all
- 47:14Speaker 2: different and I just want to celebrate it.
- 47:16Speaker 5: Right Ryan would be watching it with the kids.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, he would just be watching. Sorry, we have
- 47:21Speaker 2: to wrap, but I feel like, you know, I would
- 47:25Speaker 2: love to get together as well. I learned so much
- 47:28Speaker 2: from people. I was so inspired. I I really feel
- 47:32Speaker 2: like I bonded with with everyone in different ways. But
- 47:36Speaker 2: I am just I know, I know that you share
- 47:39Speaker 2: the sentiment. Just so grateful to have been part of it.
- 47:42Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, like truly truly.
- 47:44Speaker 4: It's again it sounds the cheesy line in your life,
- 47:47Speaker 4: but like just forever grateful and and just like what,
- 47:51Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 47:52Speaker 5: What I do to deserve this, you know, right? A lot?
- 47:57Speaker 2: Well, I can say what you did. You were a
- 47:59Speaker 2: freaking celebrated Olympic athlete and you're a rock star and
- 48:03Speaker 2: a really kind human being. So thank you for being
- 48:07Speaker 2: one of my angels. Thank you for coming on the
