- 0:46Speaker 1: My mom turns.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Can I say how old she is? Or is that?

- 0:51Speaker 1: I won't say hold you twenty one twenty one for
- 0:53Speaker 1: the six fifty ninth time?
- 0:56Speaker 2: Did I get the maths right? Hang on forty ninth time?
- 0:59Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I can't do the maths. Happy seventieth Mum. The cats
- 1:03Speaker 1: out of the bag. I've said it. I'm not supposed
- 1:05Speaker 1: to say that. Hey, Kylie, I know that you want
- 1:08Speaker 1: to share a story to kick off the pod, but
- 1:10Speaker 1: just a couple of housekeeping items before we get into that.
- 1:13Speaker 1: First things first, can I please just highlight one month
- 1:16Speaker 1: today until the book launches, one month until Boys is
- 1:19Speaker 1: actually in stores, on shelves and available for purchase. You
- 1:22Speaker 1: can get it right now for pre order, and that's
- 1:24Speaker 1: what we'd rather you do. And if you do it
- 1:26Speaker 1: via Happy Families dot com, dou and book Topia, we've
- 1:29Speaker 1: got a bunch of freebies for you as well.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So oh and just.
- 1:31Speaker 1: On that, Kylie, guess what I got an email from
- 1:34Speaker 1: the publisher just yesterday, Mary, my publisher at ABC Books,
- 1:39Speaker 1: said that the amount of interest in this book, the
- 1:43Speaker 1: amount of stores that are saying we need extras for
- 1:45Speaker 1: our shelves, the amount of pre orders that are coming
- 1:48Speaker 1: through are so significant that they've already had to go
- 1:50Speaker 1: for a reprint. And we're still in pre order stage.
- 1:54Speaker 1: The book's not even out yet. So if you haven't
- 1:56Speaker 1: gotten onto it, Boys Building Strong Young Men from the
- 1:59Speaker 1: inside Out by me, yours truly, Justin Coulson, grab it
- 2:03Speaker 1: now online book topia dot com. They've got ten bucks
- 2:05Speaker 1: off you can get twenty seven bucks instead of thirty
- 2:07Speaker 1: seven bucks. It will make your family happier if you're
- 2:10Speaker 1: raising tween or teen boys. One of the housekeeping things,
- 2:13Speaker 1: Kylie got an email from LeAnn O'Brien who said, Hi,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Justin and Kylie just wanted to share the Mother's Day
- 2:20Speaker 1: card my ten year old son Oliver made for me
- 2:23Speaker 1: for Mother's Day. Of my favorite things. He included my
- 2:26Speaker 1: phone with the Happy Families podcast as we often have
- 2:30Speaker 1: it playing in the car. Thanks to the show. Good
- 2:33Speaker 1: information and relatable. Looking forward to reading your book on boys,
- 2:36Speaker 1: so Leanne, Happy Mother's Day, and so good that your
- 2:39Speaker 1: son has.
- 2:40Speaker 2: He's drawn you with a picture of phone. Not sure
- 2:42Speaker 2: if that's gay.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I was about to say, I was wondering where that
- 2:44Speaker 3: was going.
- 2:45Speaker 1: But Happy Family's podcast is on the phone, so I
- 2:47Speaker 1: think it's excusable.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Will allow it.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Very very nice. I think that's everything housekeeping wise. Honey,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you wanted to talk about some stuff you wanted the top
- 2:54Speaker 1: of the pod.
- 2:55Speaker 3: So the other day, our eldest daughter called me and
- 2:59Speaker 3: she's I apologize I'd missed her call earlier in the day.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Usually when she is driving our grand baby to Kindy,
- 3:07Speaker 3: they'll give me a quick call to let me know
- 3:09Speaker 3: that they're on their way and I'd missed the call
- 3:11Speaker 3: for the morning, so I rang her a bit later
- 3:13Speaker 3: in the day and she said, I just have to
- 3:15Speaker 3: tell you the funniest story. Mum. She said, I tried
- 3:17Speaker 3: to call you and you didn't pick up, and so
- 3:20Speaker 3: I let it go to voicemail and your voicemail says,
- 3:23Speaker 3: this is the voicemail of Kylie Coulson. And Indy looks
- 3:26Speaker 3: at her and she says, Mommy, did you just try
- 3:29Speaker 3: to call Kylie Coulson? And Chanelle said yeah. She said huh,
- 3:34Speaker 3: and she said, but she's not there and we can't
- 3:36Speaker 3: talk to her, and she said, can we sing the
- 3:38Speaker 3: Kylie Coulson song? So they drove into KINDI with Kylie
- 3:42Speaker 3: Coulson squeaking from the car stereo.
- 3:46Speaker 2: And if you knew to the pod and you missed it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: A couple months ago, Kylie was joking around and told Jr.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Our brilliant producer, that she needed a theme song, and
- 3:53Speaker 1: this is what we ended up with.
- 3:55Speaker 3: She's leg busy place and my number one fan is
- 4:11Speaker 3: my two year old grand baby, Indy, who loves singing
- 4:15Speaker 3: at the top of her voice.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So I just need to throw this in she's out
- 4:18Speaker 1: to your old granddaughter, not just yours.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Loves me more than did.
- 4:21Speaker 1: You see her the other day when I walked into
- 4:23Speaker 1: the house after being away for four or five days.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I've been traveling, and I called out her name when
- 4:28Speaker 1: I walked into the house, and she just her whole
- 4:31Speaker 1: face lit up and she sprinted down the corridor into
- 4:33Speaker 1: my arms, gave me like a ten minute hug.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Didn't want to let go. Man, it was amazing.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Well I can top that. I can top that because
- 4:39Speaker 3: I'm wearing the purple nail polish on my fingernails that
- 4:42Speaker 3: she painted when I went to see her at Kindy
- 4:45Speaker 3: for Mother's Day.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not looking at paint my females.
- 4:48Speaker 3: She was not. She had no idea I was coming.
- 4:51Speaker 3: She heard Chanel's voice. But when she looked up, she
- 4:53Speaker 3: saw me, and she literally kind of slowly walked to
- 4:57Speaker 3: her mum, she was in a bit of a daze.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Grabbed it by the legs, go for a hug. Wall
- 5:01Speaker 3: She just did not take her eyes off bit at all.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And then she climbed up into my arms and I
- 5:06Speaker 3: swear she was going to choke me. She didn't want
- 5:08Speaker 3: to let go, and She kind of pulled away to
- 5:10Speaker 3: look at me and make sure I was real and
- 5:11Speaker 3: then go back into a big hug.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I know that for most people listening to the pod,
- 5:15Speaker 1: you're raising your kids right now. We are still right
- 5:17Speaker 1: our youngest is twelve. But grandparenting, oh my goodness, there
- 5:21Speaker 1: is just no joy on earth like grandparenting. Kylie, We've
- 5:25Speaker 1: got a We're five and a half minutes into the pod.
- 5:27Speaker 1: We still haven't started a lot of better tomorrow. You're
- 5:30Speaker 1: going first, let's recap Mother's Day. I know that's where
- 5:32Speaker 1: you wanted to go.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Mother's Day in our house has been an absolute non
- 5:35Speaker 3: event for twenty plus years.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Oh that's a bit harsh.
- 5:39Speaker 1: There hasn't been huge amounts of effort consistently. Every now
- 5:42Speaker 1: and again, there's been, there's been some real ethic from
- 5:45Speaker 1: time to time. You're not plussed. You're non plussed, aren't you?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Okay? Okay?
- 5:54Speaker 3: And I don't think I have very high expectations.
- 5:56Speaker 2: So I have zero expectations around Father's Day.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Not even going there or we took pas. But this
- 6:05Speaker 3: year was different, and it was different for all the
- 6:08Speaker 3: right reasons, and I was just so grateful. My mom
- 6:13Speaker 3: lives a good hour and a half down the road,
- 6:15Speaker 3: and sometimes it's kind of tricky to spend time together
- 6:18Speaker 3: and catch up because of the distance and because we're
- 6:21Speaker 3: still right in the middle of raising her own fam,
- 6:24Speaker 3: our own family.
- 6:25Speaker 2: We're running around like crazy.
- 6:26Speaker 3: You've been gone all week and you got home the
- 6:28Speaker 3: night before, and I kind of looked at it and
- 6:30Speaker 3: I said, honey, I'm gonna.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Head down to my mum for the night nights, but
- 6:34Speaker 2: I'm going away.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Yeah, And so at the last minute I asked if
- 6:39Speaker 3: any of the girls wanted to come with me, and
- 6:41Speaker 3: we ended up going down with our twenty three year old,
- 6:45Speaker 3: twenty two year old, and eighteen year old, so there
- 6:48Speaker 3: was three of them with me, and I didn't really
- 6:52Speaker 3: think too much of it. We were just we were
- 6:53Speaker 3: going down to spend time with my mom. We were
- 6:55Speaker 3: going to cook her dinner because she goes to church
- 6:58Speaker 3: very early on a Sunday morning. We did Saturday Night
- 7:01Speaker 3: Dennis celebration with her, and we just played a game,
- 7:04Speaker 3: we watched a movie. Like again, there wasn't anything, I guess,
- 7:08Speaker 3: particularly special about the event. It was just time together.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But it was actually the next day, as we were
- 7:14Speaker 3: driving home that the girls started talking to me about
- 7:18Speaker 3: the things that they really appreciated about me as a mum,
- 7:22Speaker 3: or even just their view on motherhood in general. One
- 7:26Speaker 3: of the girls just acknowledged that from her point of view,
- 7:28Speaker 3: on her perspective as she kind of looks at people
- 7:31Speaker 3: around her, and I guess what the world kind of
- 7:36Speaker 3: tells us about mothers. It doesn't paint a particularly glorious
- 7:41Speaker 3: picture of motherhood in general, and it definitely feels like
- 7:47Speaker 3: it's at the bottom of the list of aspiring things
- 7:49Speaker 3: to do with your life as a woman. And we
- 7:52Speaker 3: sat in our church meeting and there was maybe six
- 7:56Speaker 3: or seven young boys who were from the age of
- 7:59Speaker 3: twelve to seventeen who shared their feelings about their mums.
- 8:03Speaker 3: And it was really heart rendering to hear boys specifically
- 8:08Speaker 3: talk so openly about their admiration and love that they
- 8:11Speaker 3: had for their mums. And as we came away from that,
- 8:14Speaker 3: she continued and she just said, it's hard to sit
- 8:16Speaker 3: in a room like that and hear the stories that
- 8:18Speaker 3: these boys shared and the feelings that they had towards
- 8:21Speaker 3: their mums and not recognize the immense impact that women
- 8:25Speaker 3: and mums have on their children's lives. And as I
- 8:31Speaker 3: reflected on what motherhood means to me as an individual.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I can't think of any higher cause that I could
- 8:40Speaker 3: put my energy and time into than that of being
- 8:44Speaker 3: a mum to my children. And it was just it
- 8:47Speaker 3: was just beautiful. It was beautiful to sit in the
- 8:49Speaker 3: car and to be able to have those conversations, and
- 8:52Speaker 3: they wanted to ask lots of different things about my
- 8:54Speaker 3: mothering experience, of them personally and of their siblings, and
- 8:58Speaker 3: we were just able to share little doats and things
- 9:00Speaker 3: that they remembered from their childhood and things that I
- 9:03Speaker 3: remembered they might have wanted to know how they were.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Can see all of those kinds of when where you
- 9:09Speaker 3: know there was a few questions around that you can
- 9:13Speaker 3: pick the child who might have asked that question.
- 9:15Speaker 1: We wouldn't be able to answer those questions and I
- 9:17Speaker 1: wouldn't have a globe.
- 9:18Speaker 2: I'm not going to go and do any more detail.
- 9:19Speaker 3: But it was just delightful and so it had nothing
- 9:25Speaker 3: to do with what was wrapped up in a bow
- 9:27Speaker 3: and everything to do with just time and space to
- 9:32Speaker 3: reflect and just relish time together and I loved every
- 9:36Speaker 3: minute of it.
- 9:37Speaker 1: The take home message motherhood is impactful. It has tremendous value.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Anything else. Time with the kids, spending time in the
- 9:44Speaker 1: car side by side, having conversations matters.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Yeah. And if Mother's Day doesn't look great to you yet,
- 9:49Speaker 3: just wait a few years. It will get better.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and take the kids for a sleepover at your
- 9:54Speaker 1: mum's house for Mother's Day next year. Like that actually
- 9:56Speaker 1: was a real treat for you and the girls, but
- 9:59Speaker 1: also for your mum. That was a really cool thing.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Yeah. When we were sitting down at the dinner table
- 10:03Speaker 3: just talking about the things we were grateful for that night,
- 10:06Speaker 3: my mom acknowledged that since I had wrung her on
- 10:08Speaker 3: the Tuesday, so Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday night,
- 10:12Speaker 3: and we came on Saturday.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so five nights.
- 10:15Speaker 3: She'd hardly slept. She was so excited to have us there.
- 10:20Speaker 2: That is so sweet. I mean, that is I'm sorry
- 10:23Speaker 2: for my dad. So gorgeous.
- 10:26Speaker 1: All right, after the break, a brand new compulsion, a
- 10:30Speaker 1: brand new addiction, a brand new family activity that is
- 10:33Speaker 1: joining parents and children in our home in ways that
- 10:37Speaker 1: we never could have possibly imagined.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I'm calling it a win for us and.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Also a win for Manly.
- 10:45Speaker 2: That's next. We're back. This is the Happy Family Podcast.
- 10:54Speaker 1: You took me by surprise when you shouted out for Manly,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and you've kind of given it to the game away
- 10:59Speaker 1: a little for my older better tomorrow. It's this simple.
- 11:10Speaker 1: You went away on Saturday night to your mum's for
- 11:13Speaker 1: Mother's Day. I was left at home with our two
- 11:16Speaker 1: youngest kids, our sixteen year old and our twelve year old.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So I'm going to name drop.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Its necessary part of the story, so please forgive the
- 11:24Speaker 1: I don't know the vanity associated with this. My sister's husband,
- 11:27Speaker 1: our brother in law, has recently been appointed as the
- 11:32Speaker 1: brand new coach of a very very famous NRL rugby
- 11:37Speaker 1: League team in Sydney, the Manly Seagles.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Our brother in law is Kieren Foran.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Kieran is well known to mainly faithful. He played almost
- 11:46Speaker 4: two hundred games for the club was recently appointed a
- 11:49Speaker 4: life member, so clearly one of the most respected players
- 11:54Speaker 4: in the game.
- 11:55Speaker 1: For those of you who don't follow rugby league, that
- 11:57Speaker 1: will mean nothing to you, but he just retired from
- 11:59Speaker 1: rugby league last year.
- 12:00Speaker 2: He's mean anything to us here. I haven't I haven't
- 12:03Speaker 2: watched rug soo about twenty years ago.
- 12:05Speaker 1: When I started cycling, I realized that I couldn't stay
- 12:07Speaker 1: up and watch Friday night football and then still get
- 12:09Speaker 1: up on a Saturday morning and have a good bike ride.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I gave up football. I stopped watching it. So maybe
- 12:15Speaker 1: some more background here. My family is a rugby league family.
- 12:19Speaker 1: From the time I was born, we would spend every
- 12:22Speaker 1: when there was a game on the TV. Dad and
- 12:24Speaker 1: I would sit and watch it. We'd analyze the tackles
- 12:27Speaker 1: and the scrums and the forward passes and.
- 12:30Speaker 2: You name it.
- 12:31Speaker 1: We lived and breathed rugby league. Dad loved the Western
- 12:33Speaker 1: Subbos Magpies. I still remember the times when he took
- 12:36Speaker 1: me to the football and we got to watch the
- 12:38Speaker 1: games live. But basically we watched every game possible.
- 12:41Speaker 3: And your nan and your arch and everybody like everybody's
- 12:45Speaker 3: bill league fanatics.
- 12:47Speaker 1: And so when I stopped watching rugby league in the
- 12:49Speaker 1: early two thousands because I'd started cycling, my family essentially
- 12:53Speaker 1: they all but disowned me.
- 12:54Speaker 2: He was like, well, what are we going to talk about?
- 12:55Speaker 3: I was going to say, there wasn't much to talk
- 12:57Speaker 3: about after that was.
- 12:59Speaker 2: You watch the footing.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I've started cycling and they don't want to talk about cycling.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And I didn't know anything about footy anymore. So, long
- 13:05Speaker 1: story short, A few years ago, a dozen years ago, whatever,
- 13:09Speaker 1: it was, my sister meets and Mary's Kieran. He's playing football.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I'm still not that interested in it. I didn't even
- 13:16Speaker 1: know that he was a football player and I met him.
- 13:18Speaker 1: It was quite embarrassing, quite honestly. Fast forward, so last
- 13:22Speaker 1: year he retires. This year he comes in as the
- 13:24Speaker 1: interim coach for the Sea Eagles and within three weeks,
- 13:29Speaker 1: sadly for the actual coach, they had three losses in
- 13:31Speaker 1: a row and he got given the boot. And completely unexpectedly,
- 13:36Speaker 1: like completely shocked, Kieran gets the call, will you step
- 13:39Speaker 1: up as the interim coach?
- 13:41Speaker 2: And he says yes.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So all of a sudden, for whatever reason, we've started
- 13:45Speaker 1: watching Manly play every week when the foot is on,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and I'm on tenderhooks, like my heart is in my mouth.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I'm so nervous. The anxiety is through the roof every
- 13:56Speaker 1: time Manly takes the field, because it was just exhausting.
- 14:00Speaker 1: It's terrifying because Kieran's coaching and it feels like everything's
- 14:03Speaker 1: riding on Kieran the coach. And as a result of
- 14:05Speaker 1: me watching the footy. Now, Lily, our sixteen year old,
- 14:09Speaker 1: has started watching the footy with me. She's always kind
- 14:11Speaker 1: of liked the footy anyway. She's always felt like a
- 14:13Speaker 1: bit of a misfit because no one else wanted to
- 14:14Speaker 1: watch the football. So while you were away at your mum's,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I signed into whatever the app is so that I
- 14:21Speaker 1: could watch the football and Lily came in side on
- 14:23Speaker 1: the couch next to me, and as a manly player
- 14:28Speaker 1: I don't know any of their names, but as a
- 14:29Speaker 1: manly player was sprinting down the field being chased by
- 14:32Speaker 1: another one so that he could score a try.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I jumped out of the couch and off the couch
- 14:35Speaker 2: and I'm saying, go go go. So I'm telling, like
- 14:38Speaker 2: my dad, go son, go go go. You good thing.
- 14:41Speaker 1: And of course he scores the try and I'm going yes,
- 14:43Speaker 1: And then I'm just thinking how they going to win
- 14:46Speaker 1: and what's going to happen, and I'm yelling at the
- 14:47Speaker 1: ref for getting things wrong. And I've become completely addicted
- 14:50Speaker 1: to it, and so has Lily. And it's become this
- 14:53Speaker 1: thing where we just we're bonding over the footy again,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and it's taken me back to those memories that I
- 14:59Speaker 1: have when I was a kid, and I spent that
- 15:01Speaker 1: time with my dad playing those games. And so my
- 15:04Speaker 1: older Better Tomorrow is sport and watching the TV. I
- 15:09Speaker 1: know that I'm kind of big on not watching screens
- 15:11Speaker 1: and things, but sometimes it can just be a great
- 15:13Speaker 1: way to bond and I'm loving it.
- 15:15Speaker 3: I'm just well, I'm also loving the free burgers that
- 15:17Speaker 3: I get every time Manny wins because I picked the team.
- 15:21Speaker 1: So for my Grilled membership, we've gone into Grilled and
- 15:24Speaker 1: they've got this promotion and you're like, oh, yeah, what
- 15:26Speaker 1: do I need to pick a team for? And they
- 15:27Speaker 1: explained you can you win a free burger if your
- 15:30Speaker 1: team wins, and you're like, what team should I pick?
- 15:35Speaker 2: I'm like, what team does Karen play for?
- 15:37Speaker 3: Again?
- 15:37Speaker 1: And I said pick Manly And because I wasn't watching it,
- 15:40Speaker 1: man we had lost three in a row and everyone's like, yeah,
- 15:43Speaker 1: good luck.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Now every Monday I get a.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Dinge work free grill burgers.
- 15:48Speaker 1: You know. Anyway, that's my older better tomorrow, A time
- 15:50Speaker 1: with the family watching the footy rugby league. Apparently it's
- 15:54Speaker 1: not very cultured and it's a whole lot of other things,
- 15:56Speaker 1: but loving it absolutely absolutely legitimately loving it.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And tomorrow.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So I think, I think if I've got to write,
- 16:05Speaker 1: the Seals are one five from the last six. Tomorrow
- 16:08Speaker 1: Magic Round in Brisbane. We're going to go to sun
