- 0:02The night is learning. The reefside is yarning can only be yelled in the
- 0:07darkness for soul Elsewhere the play Banel also Playsican Cool. I'm Jack. I
- 0:20sing in the band and I write songs as well, and yeah Joe,
- 0:27Yeah I'm Joe. I play guitar in the band and a little bit of
- 0:30backing vocals here and there, and yeah, beautiful cons thanks for joining us
- 0:35tonight, no worries, thanks for having us, Thanks for having Let's just
- 0:39so from China. Just finished off that East Coast is stry and troll with
- 0:43Tapestry going. So how the shows go? Yeah, super cool. Yeah,
- 0:47a bunch of people came out to see us. It's you know,
- 0:49always great and like Tapestry, those guys are you know, super amazing live.
- 0:54So it was it was amazing just to like, yeah, get to
- 0:56see them and sort of like, yeah, just learn off of them a
- 1:00bit as well, and like it was really cool as well. Melbourne felt
- 1:04like a big step up from when we usually played, Like I think Melbourne
- 1:08can be a bit like hit or miss for us. We sometimes were you
- 1:11know, we've only played there a few times, but this last year that
- 1:15we played, Yeah, we had a great time. There was heaps of
- 1:18people and yeah, it was a really really good sort of wrap up to
- 1:22the end of the tour as well. So now I think we all feel
- 1:25pretty toughed about it, very cool. The tour was to promote the single
- 1:30Not Giving Up, which was released on March of twenty eight, So you
- 1:33obviously played that song live, so he now, did it go down good?
- 1:37I mean, like we were onto its tapestry and am PM, so
- 1:42that's you know, it was a part of that, but it was it
- 1:45was, Yeah, obviously we're promoting our single as we're getting out there and
- 1:48we're playing it, but it went down well. I think, like we
- 1:51always have a good time playing it, and yeah, like we've worked really
- 1:55hard on that song. It like was a bit of a process getting it
- 1:57to where it was, so I think whenever we play it live we feel
- 2:00pretty good about it. Now we're just sort of like happy that it's like
- 2:06had this journey, you know. Lyrically, the track portrays like the dark
- 2:12version of a person as opposed to the lighter side. Like that's very loosely
- 2:15what it's about, guys, but it's sort of us were wolves as a
- 2:19metaphor, so can you elaborate on what you've done there? Sounds pretty interesting?
- 2:22Oh yeah, Like in the lyrics, it's sort of like a I
- 2:25guess, like I say, like a light metaphor, Like I'm sort of
- 2:29just sort of talking to you a bit of that imagery and using that as,
- 2:31yeah, sort of a metaphor for some of those you know, flip
- 2:36switches and personality and things like that. So yeah, I think it's just
- 2:40something that I've always gravitated to, just being into horror movies and sort of
- 2:45gothic aesthetic and things like that. Yeah, and there's a little nod to
- 2:49that in the music video as well, where we have like a wolf character,
- 2:53but it's sort of more based off of things from like The Shining or
- 2:57like Donnie Darker, where you have like these sort of Garris looking first suits
- 3:01and it's a bit horrific in that sense. But yeah, what did actually
- 3:06take me into the music video a bit deeper, guys, because it's pretty
- 3:09special does pay homage of those movies, like you say, but Johnny Darko
- 3:13is probably one of my favorite movies of all time, and so good on
- 3:15yous for recognizing that and check it out in the video. Yeah, hell,
- 3:19yeah, no, A big fan of it. Yeah, and I
- 3:21just love that all that imagery is obviously great, and like we had like
- 3:25access to this theater, the Capri Theater, which is a really cool old
- 3:29theater, and I just thought like, oh, it'd be so cool to
- 3:30like do a video like that and get all these cool sort of like dreary
- 3:36shots. And you know, obviously the video was for not giving up,
- 3:40so like it had a bit of a meaning to it that we could sort
- 3:43of relate to get there, So yeah, we went for it. Was
- 3:46cool. We had a lot of fun filming some of the like the Shenanigans
- 3:50in there, Like filming the kids on the bicycles was a bit hilarious.
- 3:54We got to like put our filmmaker in the in the back of the car,
- 4:01like putting it through the window, and they were like driving doing some
- 4:04slightly dodgy shots there. Yeah, it's side streets that night, But it
- 4:10was really absolutely speaking of the imagery, Like, you guys use a lot
- 4:15of imagery with your with your music, I guess, and and it carries
- 4:18on to your to your music videos. So is that just coincidence that they
- 4:23go together so well or in the writing process. Do you put yourself in
- 4:26those sort of dark places and write it with a view of being able to
- 4:30maybe do that later on down the track. Yeah, I think there's so
- 4:35like it's sort of different per song. Like sometimes you'll get like inspired by,
- 4:41you know, an image or something like that, and that might inspire
- 4:44you to write a certain thing right in a certain mood. But I think
- 4:47a lot of time I write with sort of like an intention of like what
- 4:50I want to say, and I guess, like there is imagery is always
- 4:54going to be some sort of extension of that in one way or another,
- 4:57whether it's a metaphor or it's like, yeah, something else. So yeah,
- 5:02I think I'm always very visually conscious with the band. I think that's
- 5:05a really cool element. And I think I think every great band has some
- 5:09sort of visual extension that yeah, obviously extends it and you know, promotes
- 5:15the art forward. And not Giving Up is your first release for twenty twenty
- 5:20four guys, So is it a standalone song or is it part of a
- 5:24bigger picture down the track? It's a standalone song, but like there definitely
- 5:29is a bigger picture down down the road. You know, there's lots of
- 5:32things that we're working on at the moment. But yeah, there's definitely something
- 5:36big that we're working towards, and yeah there should be something soon hopefully.
- 5:43But yeah, you're not getting give to that at all, I am.
- 5:46Yeah, I mean we can at the moment, all right, keep you
- 5:49here out not give it up. Sort of draws strong parallels to music from
- 5:56the two thousands, such as Mike before Romance and Panic at the Disco.
- 5:59So is that is that a direction you're going to sort of stick to when
- 6:03it comes to write new music. I think obviously, like we're always like
- 6:08we've been inspired by those things and like that's stuff that we grew up on,
- 6:12and like that's always going to have some sort of effect on us.
- 6:15But I think what we're working on next is definitely something quite different, and
- 6:19I think we really want to push ourselves and make sure that we're growing as
- 6:25a band and maturing and really making sure that we're trying to do something different
- 6:29and yeah, just make something special. So I would just say, if
- 6:33you're going to expect anything from us next, would be expect something different.
- 6:36Yeah, very cool. So you're released your debut Weep and Honest Mistake back
- 6:42in twenty twenty, So it's only four years ago, guys, but you've
- 6:45had a few songs house you send. So how would you say to your
- 6:47music sort of changed and grown over that that period of time. Uh.
- 6:54Yeah, Like I said, we sort of just have been pushing ourselves to
- 6:57work with different people as well, and just of really working on songwriting and
- 7:01figuring out what is our sound and you know, what our influences are exactly
- 7:06and what we want to bring to the table. And obviously when there's like
- 7:10a bunch of people involved, you have to sort of go through them,
- 7:15yeah, the process and figure that out. So there was Yeah, obviously
- 7:18there's a development with the sound. I think that's a great thing that you
- 7:21can see in bands. It's like this growth and this change and see yeah,
- 7:27see that it can start here somewhere small and grow to something large.
- 7:31But yeah, yeah, I think that's been the most like important factor in
- 7:35like our musical development. I think has been like doing the first EP,
- 7:39second EP, kind of working mostly on our own and like trying to develop
- 7:44our stuff there. But then with the last few singles, we've been working
- 7:46with some other people and that's been like like even like like a year before
- 7:51that was like working with someone to to just write songs together, and that
- 7:57was such a like a challenging and rewarding experience because it's like relinquishing a bit
- 8:01of control to like try out all these ideas that someone has like come from
- 8:05a whole different background to give to you. But it's been really rewarding because
- 8:11like after the like awkward bickering stages, you get to like a really cool
- 8:16product at the end. Yeah, along those lines, guys like would you
- 8:20say that, because you, guys are still a relatively young man, Like,
- 8:24would you say that orphin chain about your own distinct sound yet or are
- 8:28you still experimenting it and finding a musical identity in a sense? I think
- 8:33I think we're close, Like I feel like the thing is. Yeah,
- 8:37with all of that, we really want to sort of spend this next period
- 8:41of time figuring, yeah, really honing in what that is. And I
- 8:43think the next thing that we put out will be more definitively us than anything
- 8:48thus far. So Yeah, I think that's sort of the goal for the
- 8:52moment. And yeah, I just think that's just going to be a really
- 8:56exciting thing to see. And yeah, the future very call Now what I
- 9:03need to just come off for runner shows. But I believe you've got something
- 9:05happening. It's Friday, which means I can have to rush and get this
- 9:09credit up before the weekend. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, Yeah,
- 9:13this Friday we're opening for Ocean Sleeper, Little Otis and Deficit at Line Arts
- 9:18Factory, and that one has sold out. So yes, very excited for
- 9:22that. That's going to be a freaking six show. Yeah, guys,
- 9:26Oh, congratulations. Sounds like he's a kicking some major goals going. So
- 9:30I'll look forward here and what you come up in the future. But in
- 9:31the meantime, take care and keep having fun. The night is growning.
