- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Dan Hurley and the Duncan Music Lounge after
- 0:03Speaker 1: practice session at the Excel Center. Some of the record
- 0:06Speaker 1: breaking stuff that team did last year before we moved
- 0:09Speaker 1: more into this roster this year. Coach assists most ever
- 0:13Speaker 1: by the Yukon team seven or ten, most points three thousand,
- 0:16Speaker 1: ninety five, most wins thirty seven, back to back thirty
- 0:19Speaker 1: wins seasons had done, had been happened before under Jim Calhoun,
- 0:22Speaker 1: right crazy ninety seven ninety eight for Jim and his
- 0:25Speaker 1: teams in ninety eight ninety nine, you rip off thirty
- 0:29Speaker 1: wins plus in two straight years. But this one kills me.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The runs that your team went on this year. You
- 0:35Speaker 1: talked about the Illinois game twenty eight times this year.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Out of those forty games, you had ten oh runs
- 0:42Speaker 1: or more. That is not easy to do in any
- 0:46Speaker 1: sport and on any level in basketball. How did that happen?
- 0:50Speaker 1: Just the mammoth amount of talent and momentum just seemed
- 0:54Speaker 1: to get momentum going in some of these games.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Just the we said like a lot, and you hear
- 0:59Speaker 2: it press conferences like bulletproof, you know, just the.
- 1:05Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:06Speaker 2: We had no vulnerabilities, just like we never turned the
- 1:09Speaker 2: ball over. We were we shared the ball, We were
- 1:12Speaker 2: a beautiful passing team. And you have best defense or
- 1:16Speaker 2: one of the best defenses in the country. You have
- 1:18Speaker 2: one of the best offenses in the country. You rebound
- 1:21Speaker 2: the ball better, you play harder, you're scouting and preparation
- 1:24Speaker 2: is better. You know you've got depth the culture. I mean,
- 1:29Speaker 2: we've all we always had the culture, and we've always
- 1:31Speaker 2: had the preparation and always had the hard playing the
- 1:35Speaker 2: last couple of years.
- 1:36Speaker 3: The offense, we.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Didn't play as fast as we would have liked last year,
- 1:40Speaker 2: but we were number one in the country inefficiency, Like
- 1:42Speaker 2: when we got out in transition, we scored and.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Then if we missed, we rebound.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Our offensive rebounding is not quite Houston, but it's close.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 1: The turnover then, you mentioned sixth in the country last year.
- 1:55Speaker 1: A few as turnovers, I mean, I think eight point
- 1:58Speaker 1: eight or something like that's pretty hard to do when
- 2:00Speaker 1: you're playing a forty minute.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Game high majors.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Usually that's not what you know. Just our players willingness
- 2:06Speaker 2: to move the ball, screen cut move makes us hard
- 2:12Speaker 2: to guard. I think you'll see a lot more teams,
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know, playing the way we've played. I think you'll
- 2:17Speaker 2: see that a lot more in college this year, a
- 2:19Speaker 2: lot more teams moving more off ball movement. We've kind
- 2:23Speaker 2: of noticed it already.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's harder to defend, right when you get a
- 2:26Speaker 1: team that's doing that.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I think basketball got lazy for a while.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I think it was just like all ball, screen ball, screen,
- 2:31Speaker 2: ball screen, and then you know, we hit people the
- 2:34Speaker 2: last two years with just insane movement and players body
- 2:37Speaker 2: movement and then the shooting.
- 2:39Speaker 3: And we've had smart players.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Guys that are smart can handle a lot of information
- 2:44Speaker 2: because the offense is complex, so we need smart guys
- 2:48Speaker 2: that could pass and shoot on the perimeter.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah, we saw that out in Portland two years ago.
- 2:53Speaker 1: That was the first sign to me that this could
- 2:55Speaker 1: be a great team. I mean, play some great teams
- 2:57Speaker 1: out there. Looked really good one by double figures. I
- 3:00Speaker 1: mean when you're seeing it against you know, the arkansass
- 3:03Speaker 1: of the world and some of these clubs, you're just
- 3:05Speaker 1: you just say to you, so, wow, we might have
- 3:07Speaker 1: something here.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Like when you're great on offense and defense and like,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you know, do you you know you could win anyway,
- 3:14Speaker 2: and then you just go on these runs because you
- 3:17Speaker 2: just stop three stop, dunk stop three. Games would go
- 3:22Speaker 2: from three to ten or twelve quick and and we
- 3:25Speaker 2: were pretty ruthless too. I mean we would really beat
- 3:28Speaker 2: beat people bad. I mean Cam Spencer some of the stuff.
- 3:31Speaker 2: You would yelling the huddle about how badly he'd want
- 3:34Speaker 2: to beat them more.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And but you know, it's nice when you have players
- 3:40Speaker 1: that kind of reflect your attitude. Yes, right, I mean
- 3:43Speaker 1: you don't have to do as much of that.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I was just vent thinking about that with this team
- 3:47Speaker 2: here today, it's like take on the personality, like take
- 3:50Speaker 2: on how hard we practice, how hard we compete, the swagger,
- 3:56Speaker 2: the champion, because you know, the personalities in this team,
- 3:59Speaker 2: Like we lost major personality. He's Donovan major personality. You
- 4:03Speaker 2: know Cam was didn't have Like Cam wasn't socially active
- 4:06Speaker 2: at all. I don't think he went to Ted's once.
- 4:10Speaker 2: That's impossible or no, maybe I think he might have
- 4:12Speaker 2: want went one time after we won it, but we
- 4:15Speaker 2: couldn't get him off the court or out of the
- 4:17Speaker 2: cold tub, you know, Cam, So uh yeah, we've had so. Yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 2: you need personalities, you need swagger and Alex doesn't you know,
- 4:26Speaker 2: And if you say, if you see like Alex.
- 4:28Speaker 3: He's got to try to be Alex should be that guy.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I mean, he's got to go in it this year.
- 4:31Speaker 2: He's got a chance to have one of the best,
- 4:34Speaker 2: make an argument he had the best college career like
- 4:36Speaker 2: anyone in recent history.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I mean, like he should have all this swagger with him.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's a quiet guy. I mean he seems
- 4:43Speaker 1: like you trying to get him to be verbal. Is
- 4:45Speaker 1: that possible?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I shouldn't have to try to get someone to be
- 4:49Speaker 2: be vocal and be verbal, you know, like, and especially
- 4:52Speaker 2: when you've experienced his level of success. Yeah, you know,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and I miss a back to back champion going for
- 4:59Speaker 2: a three p You know, he's an NBA player, He's
- 5:02Speaker 2: a preseason All American by most, you know, just he's
- 5:06Speaker 2: got to lead the group.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Way back when pat Riley, I think they started using
- 5:12Speaker 1: that term three pete and everyone said, why don't don't
- 5:15Speaker 1: talk about that? That is you know, that's gonna jinx everything.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But he had a lot of confidence. I remember, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: being around him quite a bit. You have that same confidence,
- 5:25Speaker 1: you're not afraid of it, And I think that's the
- 5:28Speaker 1: kind of thing that the team could absorb. Right the
- 5:30Speaker 1: feeling of like we're not afraid of that. That's what
- 5:33Speaker 1: we're trying to do. That's what we're trying to do.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I mean, why would you spend so much of your
- 5:36Speaker 2: life doing this if you weren't going to do that,
- 5:39Speaker 2: Because you know, there's a this's a big commitment. It
- 5:44Speaker 2: consumes everything, so he can do it. You know, Alex
- 5:49Speaker 2: is a unique player. The whole program changed when he
- 5:52Speaker 2: got here. I mean we were not you know, that's
- 5:54Speaker 2: not a coincidence either. I mean, this guy allowed us
- 5:58Speaker 2: to do things differently and his uh, just his character
- 6:03Speaker 2: and it's caused us to change recruiting philosophy for the better,
- 6:08Speaker 2: you know, like giving.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Back a little bit of athletic ability for.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You know, and maybe upside talent for just guys that
- 6:16Speaker 2: are just great basketball players and simple any simple.
- 6:20Speaker 3: School ball and coachable. That's big.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Never wants to post anything. I mean, he doesn't do
- 6:27Speaker 2: anything to help himself become a star. You know, he
- 6:30Speaker 2: just wants to play ball.
- 6:32Speaker 1: He needs an administrative assistant, that's what he needs. Yes,
- 6:37Speaker 1: just kidding, all right, Coach will be back in a second.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Got a live audience here at the Duncan Music Lounge
- 6:43Speaker 1: and iHeart Headquarters in Hartford on Lerfield.
- 6:47Speaker 3: You want to keep business system
