- 0:00It doesn't matter how faithful you once were if you don't get
- 0:04to the end. While it is not an easy path, it
- 0:08is the only path worth pursuing and everyone is capable of
- 0:15traveling and finished the course with the help of the
- 0:18Lord. Jesus tenderly turns to the 12
- 0:24and asks, will you also go away? Will you?
- 0:42Hello, my name is Larry Corbridge and this is the Stand
- 0:48Forever series which is about believing and following Christ
- 0:54to the end, engaged in his work and helping others do the same.
- 0:59This first episode is an introduction and overview of the
- 1:04series. I served for several years as a
- 1:08General Authority 70 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
- 1:12Day Saints following a 30 year career in business and
- 1:17commercial law. When I was given emeritus status
- 1:21as a General Authority, I wrote a book titled Stand Forever that
- 1:24may or may not ever be published.
- 1:29The book is a broader umbrella to a narrower message I gave at
- 1:35Brigham Young University in 2019, also with the title Stand
- 1:40Forever, through a convergence of events including a
- 1:44recommendation to present the book content in smaller segments
- 1:49through a digital channel, and also the offer of Scripture,
- 1:53Scripture Central and others to help with that.
- 1:58I stand before you now in this first episode of the Stand
- 2:01Forever series, again designed to inspire, instruct and
- 2:06encourage anyone and everyone to believe and follow Christ to the
- 2:11end, engaged in His work and help others do the same.
- 2:16This is not something I would have done on my own.
- 2:21I fear it may be misperceived as self promotional, as though
- 2:27somehow I didn't get enough attention as a general authority
- 2:30and need to continue to be in the public eye now.
- 2:34But heaven knows I would have preferred to simply publish my
- 2:38book and go fishing. There is no income motive
- 2:43associated with this, in fact it it will cost a lot of money to
- 2:48produce. But that's OK, whatever people
- 2:51may think. My only objective is to persuade
- 2:54people to believe and follow Christ as active, contributing
- 2:59members of His church and help others do the same.
- 3:03If it helps someone to that end, it will be reward enough.
- 3:09This work overlays and amplifies Stand Forever, the BYU
- 3:14devotional message. The primary assertions of that
- 3:19talk about how to navigate the sea of disbelief and doubt, are
- 3:24critical pieces to a larger puzzle.
- 3:28My intent with this series is to piece together the larger
- 3:32puzzle, the big picture. The big picture is a big deal.
- 3:38Few things provide greater comfort, confidence, and clarity
- 3:42than looking beyond present cares to see and remember the
- 3:47big picture. Except for maybe the Holy
- 3:52Spirit, there may be nothing more helpful to brave life's
- 3:56perils than seeing and remembering the big picture, the
- 4:00whole map. We may live life in the weeds,
- 4:03but if we don't see beyond them, we will think life is only
- 4:08weeds. When we stand back, the big
- 4:12picture looks like this. The essential problem in life is
- 4:18separation from God our Father. Without God, chaos, darkness and
- 4:24death prevails. That's the first principle or
- 4:30premise. The second is Jesus Christ
- 4:34bridges the gap. If we will believe and follow
- 4:37Him to the end and help others do the same.
- 4:42He is the way offsetting chaos. He is the truth offsetting
- 4:48darkness and the life offsetting death.
- 4:52Therefore, the conclusion. Cross the bridge and close the
- 4:57gap. Believe and follow Christ to the
- 5:00end and again help others do the same.
- 5:04That is the big picture in the primary framework for this
- 5:08series. But before we go there, we need
- 5:11to believe. And so believe is the focus of
- 5:18the next two episodes, and then we will explore the big picture
- 5:24in greater depth. The heart of all of this is
- 5:29Jesus Christ as the way, the truth and the life.
- 5:35General Authorities are commissioned to be special
- 5:38witnesses of Jesus Christ. That does not mean.
- 5:44It does not mean I am better or know more than anyone else, not
- 5:50hardly. It does mean, however, I have
- 5:54been given a charge to especially talk of Christ.
- 6:00Rejoice in Christ prophecy of Christ and write according to
- 6:05those prophecies that our children may know to what source
- 6:09they may look for every mission of their sins.
- 6:14As Nephi said, that charge to be a special witness of Jesus
- 6:21Christ did not expire with emeritus status.
- 6:27The Stand Forever series is my special witness of Jesus Christ.
- 6:45The content of this series is grounded in truth.
- 6:50Truth is the standard. The springs from which the BYU
- 6:55devotional and now this series flow are the Scriptures, the
- 7:02words of living prophets, and My life experience.
- 7:06And two assignments as a general authority.
- 7:09I'll explain those two assignments.
- 7:12The first was what is called the Restoration and Cancellations
- 7:17Committee. It is comprised of a group of
- 7:22general authority, a small group who make recommendations to the
- 7:27First Presidency about requests from Church members for a
- 7:32restoration of temple and priesthood blessings previous
- 7:35previously withdrawn, or when circumstances require special
- 7:41permission to be sealed to a spouse.
- 7:45The First Presidency makes those inspired decisions, but taking
- 7:50into account and considering recommendations of the
- 7:54committee. Reading those requests almost
- 7:59every day for several years revealed a broad panorama of
- 8:06human drama, heartache, conflict, redemption, truth, and
- 8:11triumph, out of which clear realities and patterns emerged
- 8:18which are not theory or someone's ideas, rather the
- 8:22actual lived experiences of thousands of people revealing
- 8:29what works and what does not. Some of those patterns and
- 8:35lessons inform the content of this series.
- 8:40In some instances I have used their own words to describe
- 8:45their experiences, but to preserve their privacy and
- 8:50anonymity, I have no record of their names, domicile, or any
- 8:56other identifying information. The second assignment which
- 9:02influences this series was a committee called the
- 9:07Strengthening Church Members Committee.
- 9:10It is comprised of a few people, primarily general authorities,
- 9:16who consider ways the Church may further help and strengthen
- 9:19members. A part of that charge was to be
- 9:24aware of material antagonistic to the Church of Jesus Christ of
- 9:30Latter Day Saints, its members, leaders, history, and teachings.
- 9:36There may not be anything of that nature to which I've not
- 9:39been exposed. Since that assignment changed,
- 9:44however, I have not returned to wallow in that mire again.
- 9:50As I said before in the BYU devotional, reading that
- 9:54material always left me with a feeling of gloom, and one day
- 9:59that sense of darkness inspired me to write a partial response
- 10:03to all such antagonistic claims. Those reflections ultimately
- 10:10became the framework for Stan Forever and now influence this
- 10:15series as well. As I said in that devotional
- 10:21address, although what I wrote was for my own benefit, I hope
- 10:26it will help you as well. People say life is a journey.
- 10:33Enjoy the journey, which is great.
- 10:39But life is also about getting to the end, getting to the
- 10:43destination to receive God's greatest gifts, His Son, his
- 10:48Spirit, and his life, and help others do the same.
- 10:53The destination is the fruit which is desirable to make one
- 10:58happy. Even more than the journey, the
- 11:02course is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 11:06But it doesn't matter how far you go, how faithful you once
- 11:10were, or how much you enjoy the journey if you don't get to the
- 11:15end, Paul said. I have fought a good fight, I
- 11:21have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
- 11:25Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness.
- 11:29But fighting the good fight is not enough if you don't finish
- 11:33the course and keep the faith. The Stand Forever series is
- 11:38about finishing the course and keeping the faith, finishing
- 11:42what you started when you agreed to come here in the first place.
- 11:47Smelling the roses along the way is wonderful, but some are so
- 11:52intent on living the dream and smelling roses, they don't go
- 11:56anywhere. They have no idea or they forget
- 11:59where they are going. The journey, however fragrant,
- 12:04is merely meandering if you don't know where you are going.
- 12:07Yes, there can and should be joy along the way, but the journey
- 12:11is also fraught with opposition, deception, disillusion, mists of
- 12:17darkness, peril, suffering, loss, betrayal, discouragement,
- 12:22air abuse, temptation, pride and sorrow.
- 12:27It is not the yellow brick road we merrily skip along while on
- 12:31our way to Oz. It is a straight and narrow path
- 12:36on which we press forward through through the mist of
- 12:40darkness, clinging to the rod of iron as our life depends on it,
- 12:47and make our way to the tree of life.
- 12:50While it is not an easy path, it is the only path worth pursuing
- 12:58and everyone, every last one, is capable of traveling and finish
- 13:04the course with the help of the Lord.
- 13:08We are all weak and incapable of finishing alone, but we're not
- 13:13alone, or need not be. The Lord provides the strength
- 13:19to finish if we will but lean on Him.
- 13:23God's work will not fail. His Kingdom will prevail and
- 13:28stand forever, as Moroni said, for the eternal purposes of the
- 13:34Lord shall roll on until all His promises shall be fulfilled in
- 13:41our day as well. The Lord revealed, saying, The
- 13:45keys of the Kingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth,
- 13:49and from thence shall the gospel roll forth unto the ends of the
- 13:54earth, as the stone which is cut out of the mountain without hand
- 13:59shall roll forth until it has filled the whole earth.
- 14:05The prophet Daniel said the God of heaven would set up his
- 14:09Kingdom at the in the last days, which would fill the whole earth
- 14:13and never be destroyed. And continuing on, he said, And
- 14:18the Kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break
- 14:22in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand
- 14:26forever. The Kingdom of God on earth is
- 14:31the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
- 14:34It will stand forever. But will you?
- 14:37And I? The day following the miracle of
- 14:41the feeding of the 5000, Jesus said to the same people who were
- 14:45fed the day before, I am the bread of life.
- 14:49He said, He that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that
- 14:53believeth on me shall never thirst.
- 14:57When they hear this, along with even the more difficult
- 15:01statement saying, Whoever eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood
- 15:09hath eternal life, many then say, Hearing that this is and
- 15:15hard saying, who can hear it? And from this time forward, many
- 15:21of his disciples go back and walk with him.
- 15:25No more heartbroken, I think. Jesus tenderly turns to the 12
- 15:34and asks, Will you also go away? That is one of the central
- 15:47questions of life. It echoes down through the ages
- 15:52to our day. Will you also go away?
- 15:58Will you? Peter immediately gives the
- 16:04perfect answer. Impetuous Peter, the Peter who
- 16:07more than once airs in his discipleship, answers
- 16:12instinctively and with stunning clarity, cutting through the fog
- 16:17like a sharp knife, and says, Lord, to whom shall we go?
- 16:24Thou hast the words of eternal life, and we believe and are
- 16:30sure that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
- 16:37It was simple and clear cut for Peter, although he may not have
- 16:42fully understood the Bread of Life sermon either.
- 16:46Although he was troubled and confused from time to time, he
- 16:50knew the primary truth and knowing that he was not
- 16:55disaffected by lesser things. That was the difference between
- 17:00Peter and the many of the Lord's disciples who went back and
- 17:05walked no more with him. That was the difference.
- 17:09The fact that those other disciples once walked with the
- 17:13Lord is of little consequence now because they didn't finish.
- 17:19They quit. They turned away, and turning
- 17:22away, they went back. You can't simply step aside from
- 17:27Christ without going back. Peter stayed the course.
- 17:34Peter finished, not because he knew everything, but because he
- 17:39knew the most important things. The question is, will you and I
- 17:45stand? Will you stand forever or will
- 17:53you go away? And if you go, where will you
- 17:59go? Will you waver like a wave of
- 18:05the sea, as Paul said, driven with the wind, tossed to and
- 18:10fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, in this
- 18:14sleight of men and cunning craft craftiness whereby they lie in
- 18:19wait to deceive? Or will you rather discern
- 18:22between truth and air, see through deception, and muster
- 18:28the will to live the truth, come what may?
- 18:31Will you be lukewarm? Or will you have the Lord's word
- 18:35in your heart, as Jeremiah said, as a burning fire shut up in
- 18:42your bones? Will you know and remember where
- 18:47you're headed and muster the will to go there without
- 18:50quitting, without backing off a way or out, not giving up in or
- 18:54out, not pulling back or out, not retreating or surrendering,
- 19:00not wimping out? Will you stand firm and unbroken
- 19:04against the winds of opposition? Will you stand now, tomorrow,
- 19:09and forever above the clouds of doubt and disbelief?
- 19:14Finally, while you may pick and choose among the various
- 19:17episodes of this series, I encourage you to take them in
- 19:22their order. It's up to you.
- 19:24But this is not a random collection of religious musings,
- 19:28rather a carefully orchestrated series that leads to a
- 19:33particular conclusion. And if you take the pick and
- 19:37choose approach, you will miss the overarching message because
- 19:42the whole is greater than the random sum of its parts.
- 19:46I invite you to join me on this journey and stand forever.
