- 0:02Speaker 1: This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me
- 0:09Speaker 1: covering one piece episodes seven seventy seven through seven seventy nine.
- 0:18Speaker 1: To the Reverie, Princess Vivi and Princess Shira Hoshi to
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Reverie, Rebecca and the Sakura Kingdom. Kaido returns an
- 0:29Speaker 1: imminent threat to the Worst Generation. In these episodes, there
- 0:36Speaker 1: is a big event called the Reverie that we are
- 0:40Speaker 1: heading for, and everybody that we have met along the
- 0:44Speaker 1: way seems to be showing up. I am pretty interested,
- 0:49Speaker 1: to be honest, in what all happens here, because it
- 0:52Speaker 1: is going to be a gathering of a lot of
- 0:56Speaker 1: different names. Welcome to Welcome to the show everyone. I
- 1:20Speaker 1: am Natasha. Thank you very much to Florian for commissioning
- 1:24Speaker 1: this episode. So I was a little bit when I
- 1:32Speaker 1: started this episode seven seventy seven. I took a moment
- 1:36Speaker 1: because I wasn't sure if this was going to turn
- 1:39Speaker 1: out to be something that was like a filler episode.
- 1:44Speaker 1: The fact that it was like having to do with
- 1:46Speaker 1: Vivi and it seemed like we were suddenly making a
- 1:50Speaker 1: big departure from the storyline that we had been following.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I went and like triple checked the listing on the
- 2:00Speaker 1: spreadsheet that Florian gives me because I had a moment
- 2:03Speaker 1: of like, oh wait, maybe I'm supposed to skip these. No,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm supposed to skip the next three apparently. But it
- 2:12Speaker 1: makes sense that I felt that way because we were
- 2:14Speaker 1: sort of jumping off of where we had been and
- 2:19Speaker 1: into a whole new situation. And like I said in
- 2:24Speaker 1: my intro, I'm actually pretty excited about this. I'm this
- 2:29Speaker 1: is one of my favorite things about One Piece in general,
- 2:32Speaker 1: I think, and I definitely see how if I feel
- 2:36Speaker 1: this way after only having watched things the one time.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It has to be a major thing for everybody who's
- 2:43Speaker 1: watched this series a bunch of times. But anytime that
- 2:46Speaker 1: you have characters that you've gotten to know over the
- 2:49Speaker 1: course of a long arc, and all of a sudden,
- 2:53Speaker 1: after literally years away from them, they show up again,
- 2:57Speaker 1: it's just fun. Even if you don't really like the
- 3:00Speaker 1: character a lot, you're still kind of like, hey, what's
- 3:04Speaker 1: going on? You know. It's sort of like running into
- 3:07Speaker 1: somebody that you know you went to high school with,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and even though not necessarily not like a school bully
- 3:13Speaker 1: or anything, but just somebody that like you didn't really
- 3:16Speaker 1: get along with or hang out with necessarily, but then
- 3:19Speaker 1: you run into them at the grocery store and you're
- 3:22Speaker 1: sort of like, oh shit, what are you up to
- 3:25Speaker 1: these days? Because it's just such a blast from the past.
- 3:28Speaker 1: You know. Luflorian is in the chat and says, there's
- 3:32Speaker 1: a lot of recap and I don't know how in
- 3:34Speaker 1: DEPTHY want to go with it. I leave it up
- 3:36Speaker 1: to you. And also, it has been so long, so
- 3:38Speaker 1: a recap is not too bad at this point. Yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 1: so this is something that I also wanted to touch on.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So first of all, I I was saying, you know,
- 3:47Speaker 1: going back and seeing people that we have not seen
- 3:50Speaker 1: in a while, I do just find fun. And it's
- 3:53Speaker 1: so funny because like I cannot, I can't explain to
- 3:58Speaker 1: you guys how wild the timing seems to be for
- 4:01Speaker 1: me landing on these episodes when I am because I
- 4:05Speaker 1: know that y'all didn't plan this on purpose, but it's
- 4:09Speaker 1: just for the episode where Viv shows back up after
- 4:12Speaker 1: literally years, to be like the day after we see
- 4:19Speaker 1: the first trailer with our Viv in the live action,
- 4:23Speaker 1: the day after I have a whole conversation about how
- 4:26Speaker 1: I really don't see it for viv at all. It's
- 4:30Speaker 1: just a really weird coincidence, you know. It's just very
- 4:34Speaker 1: funny to me. So I had just been saying I
- 4:40Speaker 1: don't really like viv that much, and I fucking stand
- 4:44Speaker 1: by that shit, guys. I will say, though, I still
- 4:48Speaker 1: felt a little bit of like, oh, check her out
- 4:52Speaker 1: when I saw her again. And I will also say
- 4:56Speaker 1: that the way they are having viv behave this little
- 5:02Speaker 1: glimpse that we get of her, this is a viv
- 5:06Speaker 1: that I like. This is not a viv that I
- 5:11Speaker 1: felt like we got much in the previous arc though,
- 5:15Speaker 1: So honestly, I found VIVI much more likable this time around,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and I was sort of like, huh, maybe I'm like
- 5:24Speaker 1: not remembering very well, and then then we get the
- 5:29Speaker 1: flashbacks and I really quickly went nope, nope, I was
- 5:33Speaker 1: right to hate her. I have realized something. And this
- 5:37Speaker 1: is not even a slight on Vivy specifically, although it
- 5:44Speaker 1: was particularly annoying with her. I have an issue with
- 5:52Speaker 1: characters in One Piece that cry a lot, and it
- 5:57Speaker 1: is not about the crying it so well, I really
- 6:04Speaker 1: really hate the way that voice actors have to portray crying.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Most of the time. There are some exceptions where it's
- 6:15Speaker 1: genuinely emotional and they are trying to get across that
- 6:19Speaker 1: somebody is actually in pain. And in those cases where
- 6:24Speaker 1: it's like a specific kind of acting, I can get
- 6:27Speaker 1: behind it and it can be affecting. But due to
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think the nature of anime in general and how
- 6:37Speaker 1: incredibly exaggerated a lot of people's reactions to things are
- 6:41Speaker 1: in a way that doesn't work. A lot of the time.
- 6:44Speaker 1: For me, crying on this show is like ninety percent
- 6:50Speaker 1: of the time, so fucking annoying, and I have just
- 6:56Speaker 1: begun to like really realize that it's the sound of
- 7:00Speaker 1: the voices when they make the crying sounds. It's just
- 7:04Speaker 1: really faky and gets very high pitched and like it's
- 7:10Speaker 1: like a dental drill. Two. Usually it goes on for
- 7:15Speaker 1: way too long, because frankly, a lot of the crying
- 7:18Speaker 1: is fucking filler, and it's just drawing out like a
- 7:22Speaker 1: moment that otherwise we could have been done with this,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but no, instead, I have to listen to this person
- 7:27Speaker 1: cry for like eighty percent of this one minute long story,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and it just takes forever for them to get to
- 7:35Speaker 1: the point because we keep having to pause to cry.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And also, so that's one and two three is a
- 7:46Speaker 1: lot of the time, the characters who do this a
- 7:49Speaker 1: lot are women. Now, it's certainly not always the case.
- 7:55Speaker 1: We have a lot of characters that are men who
- 7:58Speaker 1: do cry a lot of the time. Also, I am
- 8:01Speaker 1: not by any means saying it's mostly women, although it
- 8:06Speaker 1: probably is mostly, but like by a smaller margin. But
- 8:09Speaker 1: I think that because there are so few female characters
- 8:18Speaker 1: that are kind of like major characters that I really like,
- 8:24Speaker 1: when they wind up getting sidelined with a lot of crying,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I find it particularly annoying because I feel like you're
- 8:31Speaker 1: squandering an opportunity, to an opportunity to make her actually
- 8:37Speaker 1: interesting in some other way. And you know, the crying
- 8:42Speaker 1: that happens with other male characters is almost never just
- 8:47Speaker 1: they are super emotional, period, and that's what they are
- 8:51Speaker 1: as a character. It's usually like a combo of things
- 8:54Speaker 1: where they're super emotional because they take their honor very seriously.
- 8:59Speaker 1: For example, if we're going to do like Momenoskui's fake dad,
- 9:04Speaker 1: what is his name, Keinemon, you know, he cried a
- 9:07Speaker 1: lot when he told the story to them, but he
- 9:09Speaker 1: cried a lot, and it's like something that felt like
- 9:13Speaker 1: it points to a particular character aspect for him, whereas
- 9:21Speaker 1: somebody like Shira Hoshi, crying is like literally all she
- 9:26Speaker 1: does and it's such a thing that Luvi has to
- 9:28Speaker 1: make her promise to fucking stop it now by no means.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And am I trying to say that viv is as
- 9:39Speaker 1: bad with the crying as Shira Hoshi, because anybody knows
- 9:43Speaker 1: shiro Hoshi is the worst, the absolute worst with this.
- 9:47Speaker 1: I still kind of weirdly liked shira Hoshi in a way,
- 9:50Speaker 1: even though she was super annoying in this fashion, there
- 9:53Speaker 1: was still something about her that I found kind of amusing.
- 9:56Speaker 1: But I think that, like VIVI was my first exposure
- 10:02Speaker 1: to the princess type character in this universe that winds
- 10:08Speaker 1: up pigeonholed in this role, and I think I found
- 10:13Speaker 1: it really difficult with her because it was like we
- 10:16Speaker 1: were being told on the one hand that she was
- 10:19Speaker 1: actually kind of badass, but then it was like nothing
- 10:23Speaker 1: and she would cry at the drop of a hat,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and we in the flashback get to see this moment
- 10:27Speaker 1: where she's like yelling at Loofy about how she doesn't
- 10:30Speaker 1: want to watch anybody die. But she's beating the shit
- 10:34Speaker 1: out of him, and I couldn't help but laugh, because
- 10:36Speaker 1: usually the I don't want to watch people die is
- 10:39Speaker 1: coming from a place of like, I prefer non violent action.
- 10:44Speaker 1: So her just absolutely going in on him. It feels
- 10:47Speaker 1: like this isn't exactly in the spirit of what I
- 10:50Speaker 1: thought this would be. But in the end, when it
- 10:54Speaker 1: turns out to be, as we are reminded, is him saying, Okay,
- 11:01Speaker 1: so you don't want anybody else to die, but if
- 11:03Speaker 1: you die fine? Is that what you're saying that your
- 11:07Speaker 1: life just isn't really worth anything and it's not a
- 11:09Speaker 1: big deal if you wind up dead. Because I don't agree,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I don't think anybody else would, And that I liked
- 11:19Speaker 1: as a conclusion because I wasn't drawing that conclusion. I
- 11:26Speaker 1: think that Florian, you're definitely right about like it has
- 11:29Speaker 1: been so long, so a recap is not too bad
- 11:31Speaker 1: at this point. I think you're one hundred percent right.
- 11:34Speaker 1: This is the sort of thing where to a degree,
- 11:37Speaker 1: I'm not really sure how much I'm going to say
- 11:39Speaker 1: about a lot of the recap because I've said what
- 11:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna say about it to a certain point, but
- 11:47Speaker 1: it is interesting to like look back at it and
- 11:50Speaker 1: see how different certain things feel on the other side
- 11:54Speaker 1: of them. I think that probably part of me was
- 12:02Speaker 1: a little too hard on viv at the time, But
- 12:07Speaker 1: I also hadn't really understood how long some of these
- 12:13Speaker 1: arcs were going to wind up being, so I think
- 12:15Speaker 1: that was part of the trouble for me back in
- 12:18Speaker 1: the day, was like, you know, we're doing the Alabastas
- 12:23Speaker 1: storyline for the first time. Everything is taking a long
- 12:27Speaker 1: time to progress, and in that time where it's feeling
- 12:32Speaker 1: already pretty drawn out, we have this girl that keeps
- 12:36Speaker 1: crying and wailing and insisting that people don't have to fight,
- 12:41Speaker 1: and it just felt like very tedious to me, which
- 12:46Speaker 1: I think is fair. But I also now understand a
- 12:50Speaker 1: little bit better the rhythm of the show and how
- 12:53Speaker 1: much things are drawn out, and that maybe if I
- 12:57Speaker 1: watched it now with this understanding, perhaps you would bother
- 13:00Speaker 1: me as much as she did the first time. I
- 13:02Speaker 1: don't know, Maybe she would bother me just as much, genuinely,
- 13:05Speaker 1: I don't know, but I feel like the way that
- 13:13Speaker 1: Vivi is being portrayed now to me seems to be
- 13:19Speaker 1: a lot more as Yeah, Florian is in the chat
- 13:24Speaker 1: and says, maybe she changed, but she does feel more free. Now, Yeah,
- 13:29Speaker 1: that's exactly it. There's just an ease to her and
- 13:32Speaker 1: a sort of like lightness to her attitude. And I
- 13:38Speaker 1: think that, you know, the way that it's mentioned by
- 13:42Speaker 1: the other characters who are saying goodbye to her on
- 13:44Speaker 1: the shore, it's like unusual for her to be behaving
- 13:48Speaker 1: this way, and so they are thinking that probably she's
- 13:52Speaker 1: just really excited to be out here doing some pirate
- 13:55Speaker 1: like shit again after so long. And I like that
- 13:59Speaker 1: in terms of it sort of re establishing something that
- 14:04Speaker 1: I feel is what a lot of people argue for
- 14:08Speaker 1: VIVI like in her favor, A lot of people talk
- 14:11Speaker 1: about her being daring and doing something really risky for
- 14:18Speaker 1: the sake of Alabasta and her people, and all of
- 14:21Speaker 1: that is like factually true, but I just wasn't feeling
- 14:25Speaker 1: it from her character. And so having this moment of
- 14:29Speaker 1: her being really eager to get out on the high
- 14:32Speaker 1: seas and doing like somersaults and shit off of the
- 14:37Speaker 1: crow's nest down to the deck, all of this was
- 14:41Speaker 1: making me go, Okay, here she is. Here's the girl
- 14:44Speaker 1: that's like willing to take a risk and capable and
- 14:50Speaker 1: just excited to tear it up a little bit. And
- 14:55Speaker 1: I'm excited about seeing this side of her again. I
- 14:58Speaker 1: just hope, I really hope y'all that we are not
- 15:02Speaker 1: about to have her just be crying again. Please don't
- 15:06Speaker 1: let us do this. Also, in the flashbacks that we see,
- 15:12Speaker 1: it's the moment of her like yelling for everybody to
- 15:15Speaker 1: stop fighting. And this is something that me and a
- 15:21Speaker 1: friend sort of like argued over a little bit because
- 15:25Speaker 1: they were saying that they found it really moving when
- 15:29Speaker 1: she's yelling for everybody to stop fighting, because she's clearly
- 15:33Speaker 1: having like a mental break that her standing up there yelling,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and how ineffectual it is, the fact that it irritated me.
- 15:43Speaker 1: They were like, well, that's the point, is that she
- 15:47Speaker 1: is losing it, and so she's doing something that's super
- 15:50Speaker 1: ineffective because she doesn't like, she doesn't even have it
- 15:56Speaker 1: together in her own mind enough to look around and realize,
- 16:00Speaker 1: you're not accomplishing anything. Is what are you doing that
- 16:05Speaker 1: she's like kind of lost touch with reality for a
- 16:08Speaker 1: moment because she is feeling so desperate. But I didn't
- 16:13Speaker 1: feel that in that moment and I do blame that
- 16:19Speaker 1: in large part on having her be a character who
- 16:23Speaker 1: cries and wails so much before we reach that point
- 16:29Speaker 1: that by the time we get here and she's crying
- 16:32Speaker 1: and whaling for everybody to stop fighting, I have fucking
- 16:34Speaker 1: lost patience with her and I am not interested. And
- 16:39Speaker 1: her crying and wailing is something that I have begun
- 16:41Speaker 1: to tune out because I find it so irritating. So
- 16:47Speaker 1: this might have been something that really affected me and
- 16:50Speaker 1: might have made me go, oh my god, she's really
- 16:51Speaker 1: losing it. Look at this poor thing if we hadn't
- 16:54Speaker 1: already overdone it by then, but we had, And so
- 16:59Speaker 1: for me, I remember watching that scene and just rolling
- 17:03Speaker 1: my eyes and being like, oh, my fucking god, this
- 17:05Speaker 1: bitch is useless, And like she's not actually useless. She
- 17:11Speaker 1: does accomplish things. I know that, but I just think
- 17:15Speaker 1: that the combo of having to draw things out and
- 17:20Speaker 1: having her be as repeatedly emotional with this very shrill
- 17:27Speaker 1: voice acting it just wound up sort of shooting that
- 17:31Speaker 1: aspect of her personality that was supposed to be important
- 17:34Speaker 1: later in the foot. I really wish that that had
- 17:39Speaker 1: worked for me, because the way that my friend explained
- 17:42Speaker 1: it and described it. We weren't like watching the episode
- 17:45Speaker 1: at the time or anything, but I was sort of like, oh, okay,
- 17:49Speaker 1: But then when we saw just a moment of it
- 17:51Speaker 1: in the flashback, and that flashback it is by no
- 17:53Speaker 1: means that whole scene, because I remember that shit going
- 17:56Speaker 1: on and on and on, even just that little bit
- 18:01Speaker 1: in the flashback, I was like, Oh, yeah, no, I
- 18:04Speaker 1: get what they meant when they were explaining to me
- 18:06Speaker 1: how this was supposed to hit, but it doesn't. It
- 18:09Speaker 1: doesn't hit that way for me, and I'm in the minority.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I know most people seem to really like Vivi and
- 18:15Speaker 1: apparently this did affect them. So I'm not trying to
- 18:21Speaker 1: say that like my opinion is the end all be all.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I'm just trying to explain where I'm coming from on
- 18:27Speaker 1: some of this stuff and how I understand the intent
- 18:32Speaker 1: and just why that intent, while a good storytelling intention,
- 18:37Speaker 1: didn't actually seem to like come across. Because it's the
- 18:43Speaker 1: question that comes up a lot in so many properties,
- 18:46Speaker 1: is like something can sound great on paper, but if
- 18:51Speaker 1: it's not executed, well, all of that shit that you
- 18:55Speaker 1: wrote down on paper, it doesn't ultimately matter, And That's
- 19:00Speaker 1: what I felt like. Anytime that I argued with somebody
- 19:04Speaker 1: about liking Viv, they would bring up a lot of
- 19:06Speaker 1: stuff that on paper made her sound really impressive, but
- 19:11Speaker 1: just the execution didn't get that across. So I'm really
- 19:16Speaker 1: really hopeful that this version of Viv is going to
- 19:18Speaker 1: be a little bit stronger or maybe you know, I
- 19:21Speaker 1: wasn't watching it with a dub back in the day.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I don't know if I went back and watched it
- 19:26Speaker 1: with a dub if I would feel differently about her.
- 19:29Speaker 1: The flashback makes me think probably not. The flashback I
- 19:32Speaker 1: did watch with Dub and I felt almost instantly very annoyed,
- 19:38Speaker 1: So I am going to guess it probably wouldn't have
- 19:41Speaker 1: made any difference. But there's like clearly been a lot
- 19:47Speaker 1: of growth with her, and a lot of time is
- 19:51Speaker 1: meant to have passed, and I'm hoping that, like I
- 19:54Speaker 1: will start to see it for her a little bit more.
- 19:57Speaker 1: There's also, you know, the whole series was a lot
- 20:00Speaker 1: more in its infancy back during that arc, and maybe
- 20:04Speaker 1: Oda would go back and change some of the ways
- 20:06Speaker 1: that he did things back then. I don't know. But
- 20:09Speaker 1: my friend, when she was describing that scene where Vivi
- 20:13Speaker 1: is at the top of the bell tower or the
- 20:15Speaker 1: clock tower, and she's yelling for everybody to stop fighting.
- 20:19Speaker 1: She said that apparently Oda cried while he drew that
- 20:25Speaker 1: panel in the manga, and I felt so sad because,
- 20:30Speaker 1: like he obviously was really affected by the story he
- 20:35Speaker 1: was trying to tell, and the manga's a different thing
- 20:39Speaker 1: than the anime, granted, so maybe if I read it
- 20:43Speaker 1: I would feel differently too, But it just made me
- 20:47Speaker 1: really sad to know that this was a story beat
- 20:49Speaker 1: that was clearly really important to him as a person
- 20:53Speaker 1: and a writer, and that I just instantly was so
- 20:59Speaker 1: impatient with it. It's a bummer, you know. I don't
- 21:03Speaker 1: want to feel that way about something when the when
- 21:06Speaker 1: it meant so much to the original creator. I just
- 21:09Speaker 1: hate knowing that it didn't work for me at all.
- 21:12Speaker 1: And I'm not harmless, guys. She can get to me
- 21:16Speaker 1: on this show, like we have seen it, So it's
- 21:21Speaker 1: not an issue with like the medium itself or anything
- 21:25Speaker 1: like that, but it's just whatever was supposed to happen
- 21:29Speaker 1: there just didn't for me. But yeah, I I'm looking
- 21:36Speaker 1: forward to things with her, just because I'm wanting to
- 21:39Speaker 1: shift my opinion, And I'm really curious, Like the thing
- 21:44Speaker 1: that her father says is that he wants to know
- 21:51Speaker 1: potentially how his family was involved with the Ponent Glyphs.
- 21:57Speaker 1: And I think he's sort of wanting to because if
- 22:02Speaker 1: it's the Ponent Glyphs, I feel like maybe there is
- 22:05Speaker 1: some uh information he's looking for about the Lost Century?
- 22:10Speaker 1: The what is it that that it's called? You guys,
- 22:13Speaker 1: I feel like that I called the Lost Century in
- 22:15Speaker 1: my head, but I feel like the Void Century? Is
- 22:19Speaker 1: that the way that you guys say it? Which I
- 22:23Speaker 1: know that like researching that is meant to be illegal,
- 22:27Speaker 1: but that sounds sort of like what he is asking
- 22:30Speaker 1: to me. So I don't know if he realizes like
- 22:36Speaker 1: how dangerous that question is, or if he knows and
- 22:39Speaker 1: he's just telling the people closest to him, but he's
- 22:41Speaker 1: not planning to like be real public about it and
- 22:43Speaker 1: gonna be more discreet I am. I'm just really curious
- 22:50Speaker 1: about like why he even wants to know, Like he
- 22:53Speaker 1: must have suspicions already about how they were involved, So
- 22:58Speaker 1: what's uh, what's up with that? How? Oh are they
- 23:01Speaker 1: involved in this? I'm very curious myself now. Also the
- 23:08Speaker 1: flashbacks with Chopper. I, first of all, guys, am so
- 23:13Speaker 1: surprised anytime I see the old animation of Chopper. It's
- 23:17Speaker 1: honestly the way I am with the old animation of
- 23:19Speaker 1: Loofy as well. The other characters have this too, but
- 23:22Speaker 1: I feel like with Chopper it's really particularly extreme Chopper
- 23:29Speaker 1: and Loofy, where they look genuinely so much younger. It's
- 23:37Speaker 1: funny they shouldn't, but they really do. Chopper in particular,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I'm just like, oh my god, he baby, he had baby.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And when we did the flashbacks, you guys, I remember
- 23:56Speaker 1: being kind of puzzled at Chopper's whole arc back in
- 24:02Speaker 1: the day and just sort of being like, but this
- 24:07Speaker 1: guy's like committing medical malpractice, and this woman who's taken
- 24:11Speaker 1: him in is a dighead to him, and he drank
- 24:15Speaker 1: a poison even though he knew it was poison, Like,
- 24:17Speaker 1: what are we doing? I remember having all of these
- 24:22Speaker 1: emotions in response to it, and kind of not trusting
- 24:28Speaker 1: my own reaction, I think. And when I went back
- 24:32Speaker 1: and watched this flashback, all I could think was, No,
- 24:35Speaker 1: you were right, you were right. This is Banana's, I
- 24:40Speaker 1: think pretty much everybody's origin story in the show that
- 24:48Speaker 1: becomes a straw hat. I think they're all pretty fucking compelling,
- 24:55Speaker 1: and they make you feel like rooting for this person
- 25:02Speaker 1: except Chopper. Choppers is the only storyline that I am
- 25:07Speaker 1: like every step of the way. He was treated so
- 25:11Speaker 1: badly by the people around him and gas lit so much,
- 25:16Speaker 1: and I am supposed to feel like emotional about him
- 25:20Speaker 1: finally leaving the island when I was just like, yes,
- 25:23Speaker 1: get him away from these maniacs. And then there's the
- 25:26Speaker 1: whole thing with like the cherry blossoms and him like,
- 25:31Speaker 1: you know this, this whole pink shower that happens that
- 25:36Speaker 1: makes him cry, but it isn't actually cherry blossoms. It's
- 25:40Speaker 1: just them doing a thing that's like symbolic of it.
- 25:42Speaker 1: But and all of that just I I couldn't stop
- 25:49Speaker 1: but like giggling to myself and being like, this is,
- 25:52Speaker 1: if anything, worse than I remember. Sanchi's backstory is so great,
- 25:59Speaker 1: Like Zorro, are you serious? Not that we know who
- 26:03Speaker 1: his parents were or anything, but Zorro's like one of
- 26:07Speaker 1: the first moments of coverage for this show that I
- 26:11Speaker 1: really went, oh shit, we're doing something, you know. Zorro's
- 26:15Speaker 1: was hitting Nomy's backstory. Look, I may feel the way
- 26:20Speaker 1: I felt about her fake mom refusing to deny her
- 26:25Speaker 1: and then losing her life, which I thought was a
- 26:28Speaker 1: stupid move, but I won't pretend it wasn't like an
- 26:31Speaker 1: emotionally impactful moment. And the whole way that she gets
- 26:37Speaker 1: like continually ripped off by our long even after completing
- 26:40Speaker 1: the seemingly impossible challenge she gives her and everything. And
- 26:45Speaker 1: then what's going on on Oosup's island with there being
- 26:50Speaker 1: this this other baddy who has like bade his time
- 26:54Speaker 1: for years. Everybody has got these really awesome challenges that
- 27:02Speaker 1: they have to overcome and these tragedies and everything, you know,
- 27:08Speaker 1: And then there's Chopper and what is it The baddie
- 27:13Speaker 1: on his island is a dude who like eats park
- 27:15Speaker 1: benches and shit and is just like he can't even
- 27:20Speaker 1: really take him seriously, and that guy isn't like the
- 27:27Speaker 1: whole thing with Chopper's backstory and him eating one of
- 27:31Speaker 1: these devil fruits and then turning into like this weird
- 27:35Speaker 1: hybrid creature because the story sort of starts there. We
- 27:40Speaker 1: don't even really have like family for him either, so
- 27:44Speaker 1: it's just this weirdo doctor that's out here doing experiments
- 27:48Speaker 1: on people without their consent. All of this whole thing
- 27:53Speaker 1: is nonsense, and he deserved so much better. You guys.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I'm not big into fan fiction, but this is one
- 28:03Speaker 1: thing where I wouldn't be a verse to going back
- 28:07Speaker 1: and rewriting his intro arc and having something else set
- 28:10Speaker 1: up for him, because Chopper deserved so much better from
- 28:15Speaker 1: literally everybody. And maybe that's part of why I have
- 28:19Speaker 1: the affinity for him that I do, and I feel
- 28:21Speaker 1: like protective over him the way that I do is
- 28:24Speaker 1: just I feel like Chopper gets the shit under the
- 28:27Speaker 1: stick from the very start and it never stops. He
- 28:33Speaker 1: just keeps getting like sidelined or being made a joke
- 28:38Speaker 1: and even down to like only being worth two hundred
- 28:42Speaker 1: berries or whatever. I mean. I take offense to that.
- 28:46Speaker 1: I am offended, So I think that's part of it.
- 28:49Speaker 1: It's just like Chopper just deserved better. Florence says, Yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 1: that arc beside Chopper did not work for you. Yeah,
- 28:58Speaker 1: and like the the flashback did not help. So but
- 29:03Speaker 1: I agree Flaurian that, like it has been so long
- 29:06Speaker 1: that I needed to watch them. I agree that we
- 29:09Speaker 1: shouldn't skip them. And uh, I think it was the
- 29:12Speaker 1: right choice. And you know, there's all kinds of other
- 29:16Speaker 1: people that are turning up. Woppole is the name of
- 29:19Speaker 1: the guy who like ate everything, and he winds up
- 29:22Speaker 1: there's a whole thing with him, guys, and that he
- 29:26Speaker 1: was making toys out of some of the stuff that
- 29:29Speaker 1: he had been eating previously, and so he winds up like, uh, accidentally,
- 29:39Speaker 1: it seems, inventing a new alloy of metal, which gets
- 29:47Speaker 1: him all of this money. I'm not entire because like
- 29:52Speaker 1: it seems like he's king of something now and he
- 29:56Speaker 1: had been king before of Drumad Island, which is now
- 30:02Speaker 1: I think Sekura Island. I don't know. I guess just
- 30:07Speaker 1: by being rich enough, he wound up being king again.
- 30:11Speaker 1: But so he's like ruling somewhere else, and I don't
- 30:17Speaker 1: He marries Miss Universe, which is what he calls her,
- 30:21Speaker 1: and like you know, in our universe, Miss Universe is
- 30:24Speaker 1: the is a title that we give to the winners
- 30:31Speaker 1: of this particular contest. But I don't think that's what
- 30:38Speaker 1: she is. Like for a moment, I did, I thought
- 30:40Speaker 1: that he was saying, check it out, I got to
- 30:43Speaker 1: marry Miss Universe. The winner of the pageant, and it
- 30:46Speaker 1: wasn't until a little bit later that I was like,
- 30:49Speaker 1: hold up, wait, no, I don't think that's it. I
- 30:52Speaker 1: think that actually it's her name, which, honestly, I kind
- 30:59Speaker 1: of love the idea that you just like decide, you
- 31:02Speaker 1: know what. I think, I'm just want to call myself
- 31:05Speaker 1: in this universe. I wouldn't mind doing that and just
- 31:08Speaker 1: bringing people up short a lot. I think that would
- 31:10Speaker 1: be kind of funny. But yeah, this whole thing with
- 31:15Speaker 1: marrying her because now he's successful and has money so
- 31:18Speaker 1: he can get the hot wife. Ah, it's sort of
- 31:23Speaker 1: funny because again, this is not a worthy villain, and
- 31:29Speaker 1: I stand by the fact that this guy being the
- 31:32Speaker 1: batty in Chopper's arc is sort of nonsense. However, I
- 31:40Speaker 1: think I might be able to get behind him being
- 31:43Speaker 1: like potentially a reformed batty, or at least somebody who's
- 31:48Speaker 1: like being a batty isn't like all he does anymore.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Maybe maybe he's just begun to see that there are
- 31:59Speaker 1: advantages to diversifying your portfolio, so to speak, and now
- 32:04Speaker 1: that he is making other alloys, he'll get up to
- 32:07Speaker 1: a mischief if he has to, But it's not really
- 32:11Speaker 1: the way he because he used to just be a
- 32:14Speaker 1: menace out on the countryside, eating whatever he came across,
- 32:17Speaker 1: you know, And I do find that very funny still,
- 32:23Speaker 1: that this was his thing. Was just that he like
- 32:25Speaker 1: ate stuff. What a weird decision for us to have,
- 32:29Speaker 1: but you know, sure why not? Florian says, Frankie has
- 32:36Speaker 1: talked about this metal before, so Odin knew what was
- 32:38Speaker 1: happening in the background. Yeah, King buy money. And then
- 32:43Speaker 1: he says, Stephen Universe. What do you mean, Florian with
- 32:45Speaker 1: Stephen Universe? Oh, with the last name Universe. I'd never
- 32:50Speaker 1: even thought of that, but you're right. Stephen's mom, were
- 32:55Speaker 1: she not who she is, would be Miss Universe, which
- 33:00Speaker 1: is very fun. I didn't even think of that. That's good.
- 33:05Speaker 1: So this whole thing with him showing up like probably
- 33:10Speaker 1: he's still going to be a bad guy, but I
- 33:12Speaker 1: would find it kind of interesting if he weren't, because
- 33:14Speaker 1: he's just sort of weak as a bad guy in
- 33:18Speaker 1: general that I think maybe going in a different direction
- 33:21Speaker 1: with him might be more fun. I will also say, y'all,
- 33:25Speaker 1: I was fully thinking that maybe we would get either
- 33:32Speaker 1: Mister two or Eva, and that they would be showing
- 33:39Speaker 1: up to things and neither of them shows up, so
- 33:41Speaker 1: I don't know. You know, it seems like everybody who's
- 33:45Speaker 1: coming to this thing is pretty much a legitimate government
- 33:51Speaker 1: endorsed leader, and so probably these guys don't qualify, you know,
- 33:58Speaker 1: and so that makes sense, But I will not lie.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I was sort of hopeful despite that, because we haven't
- 34:06Speaker 1: seen them in a minute, and I miss their vibes.
- 34:14Speaker 1: They just added a sort of like sauce to things
- 34:18Speaker 1: that I've been missing a little bit in this past arc.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I feel like maybe, as we see a little bit later,
- 34:27Speaker 1: Carrot is supposed to provide that sauce now, but I'm
- 34:32Speaker 1: sorry about it, Carrot, it's not really working. I'm gonna
- 34:38Speaker 1: jump over to Carrot briefly and just talk about what's
- 34:42Speaker 1: up with her, because I was right, and she decides
- 34:45Speaker 1: that she is going to stow away on the sunny. Also,
- 34:51Speaker 1: there is like this whole thing that we find out
- 34:54Speaker 1: because she had looked at these bananas in a very
- 34:57Speaker 1: considering way at one point, and I wasn't really sure
- 35:00Speaker 1: what was going on there, And it turns out that
- 35:03Speaker 1: she uses those bananas to bribe the little monkey guy.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Now I don't know what this little monkey guy's role
- 35:11Speaker 1: officially is but it seems like he's just meant to
- 35:15Speaker 1: look out and watch everybody and just keep track of
- 35:20Speaker 1: all that's happening. And uh, I don't want to demean
- 35:24Speaker 1: him by just saying he's the town busybody, because I
- 35:27Speaker 1: don't think that's fair and I don't think that's quite accurate.
- 35:30Speaker 1: But it's like not not accurate either, do you know
- 35:35Speaker 1: what I'm saying. So he the fact that he gets
- 35:44Speaker 1: paid off means that they the people back on Zoh,
- 35:52Speaker 1: don't know that she stowed away either. So when she
- 35:55Speaker 1: turns up missing, what she had told the monk was like,
- 36:01Speaker 1: just don't tell them until I'm gone, pretty much, just
- 36:07Speaker 1: let me have a little time to make my get
- 36:10Speaker 1: away and then tell them whatever you want, but just like,
- 36:15Speaker 1: let me get enough time to you know. And when
- 36:21Speaker 1: she turns up on the sunny, I was actually a
- 36:25Speaker 1: little surprised because I thought that, Okay, first of all,
- 36:31Speaker 1: one thing, the fact that Frankie isn't going with them,
- 36:37Speaker 1: when you really step back and look at it, is
- 36:40Speaker 1: fucking insane. I just want to address that out of
- 36:44Speaker 1: the gate, because when I really stopped and thought about it,
- 36:47Speaker 1: I was like, this dude built this whole ship. There
- 36:51Speaker 1: have been things like functions of the ship that like
- 36:55Speaker 1: the whole crew, but Frankie didn't even know about. So personally,
- 37:02Speaker 1: I feel like Frankie should absolutely be going with the
- 37:06Speaker 1: soany rescue team because if anything happens to the Sonny,
- 37:12Speaker 1: if we need any repairs, which we wind up needing
- 37:15Speaker 1: quite soon, we have got to have somebody on hand
- 37:19Speaker 1: that can actually do that shit and who can use
- 37:21Speaker 1: the different functions of the ship. But I suspect that
- 37:25Speaker 1: he wasn't sent with them on purpose so as to
- 37:28Speaker 1: make it that there any repairs that they do need
- 37:33Speaker 1: are that much more urgent because they don't have Frankie
- 37:37Speaker 1: on board. It just is the kind of like manipulation
- 37:42Speaker 1: of events that makes it all feel a little bit
- 37:45Speaker 1: more contrived. You know. I think that were our friends
- 37:53Speaker 1: really taking a moment to decide how they were going
- 37:56Speaker 1: to play this, they would definitely select Frankie to come
- 38:01Speaker 1: with them themselves. But whatever, So, I'm so sorry. I
- 38:08Speaker 1: just saw Florine in the chat and out of context,
- 38:10Speaker 1: it's just the comment they added the gay and I
- 38:14Speaker 1: realized after a moment that what you were talking about
- 38:16Speaker 1: was mister two and Eva. But I for a second,
- 38:19Speaker 1: I didn't know what you were talking about, and I
- 38:21Speaker 1: was like, they added the gay? Where's the gay? And
- 38:24Speaker 1: now I see? I'm sorry, so Carot. When I was
- 38:31Speaker 1: saying that, I was surprised. What I mean is I
- 38:34Speaker 1: actually kind of thought Lufy was going to be more
- 38:39Speaker 1: excited when she turns up than he is. He's a
- 38:44Speaker 1: lot more like, what the fuck are you doing here?
- 38:48Speaker 1: How could you do this? He's so like the more
- 38:53Speaker 1: the merrier, I'm just gonna roll with it. Usually that
- 38:57Speaker 1: I genuinely was caught off guard by how upset he was.
- 39:02Speaker 1: And it's not like a big deal upset, but it's
- 39:05Speaker 1: enough that it caught me by surprise. And I think, guys,
- 39:12Speaker 1: like I'm trying to decide how I feel about Carrot
- 39:20Speaker 1: as a character. As a character, I can't decide yet,
- 39:27Speaker 1: and I'm going to reserve judgment. I'm gonna try and
- 39:29Speaker 1: be like, you know, cool about it. But there's a
- 39:33Speaker 1: part of me that's worried because it feels like we're
- 39:39Speaker 1: trying talking earlier about how like mister Tu and Eva
- 39:43Speaker 1: brought a certain vibe to things, as Florian says, the gay.
- 39:47Speaker 1: It may just be that they brought the gay, but
- 39:50Speaker 1: there was a sense of chaos with them that still
- 39:52Speaker 1: felt like it was rooted in something good. It was
- 39:56Speaker 1: rooted in a person who was like trying to do
- 39:58Speaker 1: the right thing or wanted friendship or wanted to defend
- 40:01Speaker 1: their friend, you know, like that sort of thing where
- 40:04Speaker 1: despite the chaos and maybe them fucking things up or whatever,
- 40:09Speaker 1: there was still something there that I really liked and respected.
- 40:12Speaker 1: But with Carot, it just feels like I just want
- 40:15Speaker 1: an adventure in a way that's so childish that I'm
- 40:19Speaker 1: like already going, ah, girl, fuck off, fuck all the
- 40:23Speaker 1: way off. And I recognize that, like she's literally kind
- 40:27Speaker 1: of meant to be a child. So I'm not even
- 40:30Speaker 1: saying that this isn't necessarily bad writing or anything like that.
- 40:34Speaker 1: I just kind of feel like I don't think I'm
- 40:37Speaker 1: gonna like her, and I don't want to feel like that,
- 40:40Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I just want to be
- 40:44Speaker 1: able to I resent when female characters turn up in
- 40:52Speaker 1: the show that I don't like, because I think that
- 40:57Speaker 1: a lot of people and the friend that I had
- 41:00Speaker 1: been talking to about VIVI very much responded to like
- 41:04Speaker 1: some of my criticism as if it were rooted purely
- 41:08Speaker 1: in misogyny. Now, I'm not trying to pretend that I
- 41:12Speaker 1: am immune to the patriarchy and to misogyny. I struggle
- 41:17Speaker 1: with internalized misogyny as much as anybody, So I'm not
- 41:20Speaker 1: trying to act like that's not necessarily at all affector.
- 41:25Speaker 1: But what I think is that the misogyny is coming
- 41:30Speaker 1: from inside the house of the show. I think that
- 41:34Speaker 1: Oda has this misogynist streak in how he writes female characters,
- 41:39Speaker 1: and so my response isn't misogynistic. I am responding to
- 41:44Speaker 1: the misogyny in the writing, and I think that's like
- 41:52Speaker 1: a different issue, And I can understand the accusation, and
- 41:56Speaker 1: like I said, I'm not going to try and wholly
- 41:58Speaker 1: deny it. But there's just a certain energy to the
- 42:04Speaker 1: women in this series a lot of the time that
- 42:07Speaker 1: feels so consistent that I can't ignore it. And I
- 42:12Speaker 1: don't want to feel this way. So there are women
- 42:16Speaker 1: characters that will turn up and I'll get excited about
- 42:18Speaker 1: and I will try, Like Rebecca, I will hold on
- 42:21Speaker 1: to this illusion that someday, eventually she will be cool
- 42:26Speaker 1: for so much longer than it deserves, because I have faith.
- 42:31Speaker 1: And then it just doesn't come to anything. So I
- 42:37Speaker 1: just I want to acknowledge this because you know, I
- 42:41Speaker 1: saw the way that I was internally reacting to Carrot
- 42:46Speaker 1: and how much I was like almost right away going ugh,
- 42:50Speaker 1: you know, and so I stopped myself and was like, oh,
- 42:53Speaker 1: what is that? Am I being shitty? Is that a
- 42:55Speaker 1: me issue? And upon reflection, I don't think it is.
- 43:02Speaker 1: I don't know. We'll see, and it's certainly possible that
- 43:06Speaker 1: like I will grow to like her. You know. It's
- 43:11Speaker 1: I may not feel the way that I do now
- 43:14Speaker 1: the whole time, but the way that she is introduced
- 43:18Speaker 1: is like a difficult thing. Because anytime that somebody just
- 43:22Speaker 1: doesn't consult with any of the folks that they are
- 43:25Speaker 1: about to wildly inconvenience and insert themselves into a thing,
- 43:30Speaker 1: I always feel a way about it because I just
- 43:31Speaker 1: don't appreciate that kind of behavior in life either. So
- 43:35Speaker 1: there's a point where, oh my god, I forgot the
- 43:40Speaker 1: tiger's name again. You guys have told me so many
- 43:42Speaker 1: times Pedro? Is it Pedro? But she's like, he says,
- 43:48Speaker 1: we got to turn around and go home, and she says, no,
- 43:53Speaker 1: you can't. They'll be so mad at me, and he's like, oh,
- 43:57Speaker 1: so you'd rather inconvenience the people who fucking us then
- 44:01Speaker 1: be yelled at really and I was fucking slow clapping
- 44:04Speaker 1: when he said that, I was like, good, thank you.
- 44:07Speaker 1: This is exactly how I was feeling. Fuck all these guys.
- 44:11Speaker 1: I guess right, you just showed up, like eventually we
- 44:14Speaker 1: run out of food. And it has nothing to do
- 44:16Speaker 1: with her, but I definitely had a moment of like,
- 44:18Speaker 1: you don't even know if they have provisions enough for
- 44:20Speaker 1: another person. And then we find out that she didn't
- 44:23Speaker 1: even know how long it was going to take to
- 44:24Speaker 1: get where they were going. She thought it was gonna
- 44:26Speaker 1: be like a one day trip. And that also I
- 44:30Speaker 1: was just like, oh okay, somebody throw her overboard. I
- 44:32Speaker 1: can't deal. I can't take it. She wants this big
- 44:34Speaker 1: adventure and she literally knows jack shit about anything. Ah,
- 44:40Speaker 1: I'm tired already. Sorry. Florien says, oh yeah, that is fair.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Oda is not perfect. He is sometimes better than other Mangoka,
- 44:50Speaker 1: I keep forgetting that. That's what's When you wrote that,
- 44:53Speaker 1: I was like, what is happening with that word? But
- 44:55Speaker 1: now I see yeah, and this is what I hear that,
- 44:59Speaker 1: Like you know there's a definite misogynist problem with manga
- 45:05Speaker 1: in general, so I believe you when you say that
- 45:11Speaker 1: oftentimes he is better about it, but when the bar
- 45:16Speaker 1: is so low, sometimes that's just still not enough. H
- 45:20Speaker 1: And Pedro is his name, Okay, thank god, I can't
- 45:23Speaker 1: believe I actually remembered it. I'm just gonna try and
- 45:25Speaker 1: remember Pedro Pascal because he's the hot one, because you know,
- 45:29Speaker 1: he is a tiger guy. But like low Ki, I
- 45:30Speaker 1: would still hit it, so you know, it's fine. But yeah,
- 45:35Speaker 1: this this whole thing with Krot, like she just throws
- 45:41Speaker 1: this chaos, everything into chaos by appearing, by not being
- 45:45Speaker 1: prepared in a lot of ways, and then we have
- 45:49Speaker 1: this other thing going on. It's so weird. It starts
- 45:51Speaker 1: off with like Chopper being really tired acting and Nomi
- 45:55Speaker 1: giving him instructions and acting really tired, and I had
- 45:57Speaker 1: a moment of like, oh no, what's going on? But
- 46:00Speaker 1: then it turns out that all it is is them
- 46:03Speaker 1: sort of reacting to Loofy jumping off the side of
- 46:06Speaker 1: the elephant with them in his arms, and that they
- 46:09Speaker 1: all had this trauma that they're still recovering from, which
- 46:12Speaker 1: actually I found really funny as like a concept of
- 46:16Speaker 1: them just being like because Loufy is starting to get
- 46:20Speaker 1: irritated with them, and it's like, hey, guys, snap out
- 46:22Speaker 1: of it, and they're all just like, we wouldn't be
- 46:24Speaker 1: acting like this if you hadn't just jumped off the side,
- 46:27Speaker 1: And I was like, you know what, I sort of
- 46:28Speaker 1: like that. There's like a weird consequence to that. I
- 46:32Speaker 1: found it oddly satisfying somehow, I don't know. But the
- 46:41Speaker 1: thing that we wind up really having to deal with
- 46:47Speaker 1: is we don't have a cook and so loofy, we
- 46:54Speaker 1: get this wonderful moment. You guys, I love this so much,
- 46:58Speaker 1: Like after having given Oda a bunch of crap about misogyny,
- 47:04Speaker 1: I will say, right here, this isn't one of those
- 47:08Speaker 1: moments I thought it might be for a second, but
- 47:14Speaker 1: then it's not. So everybody is like trying to look
- 47:21Speaker 1: around and see who's gonna do the cooking and not me.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Finally says, well, if none of you are going to
- 47:30Speaker 1: do it, then I guess I have to. And I
- 47:34Speaker 1: really did have a second of like, oh fuck this.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Of course the girl has to cook, okay, And then
- 47:43Speaker 1: she starts walking toward the kitchen and she says it's
- 47:48Speaker 1: going to be five thousand berries per head. I almost
- 47:54Speaker 1: cheered out loud. I am not exaggerating. This is the energy. Okay.
- 48:03Speaker 1: If we are going to be expected to do the
- 48:05Speaker 1: fucking labor, then yeah, I saw the best TikTok the
- 48:10Speaker 1: other day. For those who are not aware of this stereotype,
- 48:16Speaker 1: and I will call it a stereotype despite the fact
- 48:19Speaker 1: that in every relationship I have ever been in it
- 48:23Speaker 1: has been true. There is a stereotype that men never
- 48:30Speaker 1: know where anything is and that women always know where
- 48:36Speaker 1: everything is and have a really good memory for that
- 48:38Speaker 1: sort of thing. Now, I'm going to be real. This
- 48:43Speaker 1: is not because men and women have totally different brains.
- 48:46Speaker 1: It is because women are socialized to be more responsible
- 48:50Speaker 1: from earlier in their lives than men are, and they
- 48:53Speaker 1: are socialized to also never expect a safety net of
- 48:56Speaker 1: another person who is competent to be around, and so
- 48:59Speaker 1: there is a pressure to get it right because they
- 49:02Speaker 1: don't have anybody else who is going to get it
- 49:05Speaker 1: right if they don't get it right. So let's just
- 49:07Speaker 1: like put that out there right away and acknowledge that.
- 49:11Speaker 1: So setting this aside, that stereotype has been in my
- 49:17Speaker 1: life dead on, every single time I have been in
- 49:22Speaker 1: a relationship, I have known where ninety percent of our
- 49:26Speaker 1: positions are in our home, in what drawer or what
- 49:30Speaker 1: cabinet or at the very least what room, And the
- 49:34Speaker 1: men I have been with do not. And there was
- 49:37Speaker 1: that TikTok where this woman was demanding five dollars every
- 49:43Speaker 1: time somebody asked her where something was in exchange for
- 49:47Speaker 1: finding it for them and handing it to them. And
- 49:50Speaker 1: the best part of the joke is not just that
- 49:53Speaker 1: she holds her hand out and they give her money
- 49:55Speaker 1: and then she shows them where it is. It's that
- 49:58Speaker 1: half the time the thing they're asked looking for is
- 50:01Speaker 1: literally in frame with her, and that if they were
- 50:04Speaker 1: paying the least bit of attention and making the slightest
- 50:08Speaker 1: effort to find the thing without just asking her, they
- 50:11Speaker 1: would see it four inches to the left of her elbow.
- 50:14Speaker 1: There it is. But they don't, because that is how
- 50:17Speaker 1: it is. When you are a woman who has shit
- 50:19Speaker 1: on lock. People stop putting in the most basic effort
- 50:23Speaker 1: because they know you have it. And it's really dangerous actually,
- 50:27Speaker 1: because then if that one person is taken out of
- 50:30Speaker 1: commission somehow, everything goes to shit because nobody has and
- 50:34Speaker 1: there's no backup to that person. But in the moment,
- 50:38Speaker 1: I was just cracking up because I'm watching this video, like,
- 50:41Speaker 1: if I did this, I would be absolutely wrecking the
- 50:45Speaker 1: budget because it would all be going into my pocket.
- 50:49Speaker 1: And so NAMMY's response of sure, I'll do the cooking,
- 50:54Speaker 1: but you will pay me for that, I was so
- 50:58Speaker 1: here for it. I cannot overstate it. I was so delighted,
- 51:02Speaker 1: you guys, genuinely like applause, standing ovation, great moment. So
- 51:11Speaker 1: they all decide I would rather not pay shocker, and
- 51:19Speaker 1: Loofy decides that he's going to attempt the cooking. I'm
- 51:25Speaker 1: just gonna say it, y'all deserve what you wound up getting.
- 51:31Speaker 1: I am so sorry, but you let Loofy cook. That's
- 51:38Speaker 1: on you. What you wind up with, and the fact
- 51:40Speaker 1: that all the food is gone your problem. I'm not
- 51:44Speaker 1: even mad at him, Like I'm mad at him in
- 51:47Speaker 1: a general way, but I am not actually mad at him,
- 51:52Speaker 1: because nothing about him as a person has ever suggested
- 51:57Speaker 1: it would end up any other way. Ever, this has
- 52:00Speaker 1: always been what he is like. He has always anytime
- 52:04Speaker 1: he's tried to cook, it has been a complete disaster.
- 52:08Speaker 1: He has no sense of portioning things out or having
- 52:12Speaker 1: there be like a rationing system on anything. So when
- 52:17Speaker 1: he winds up cooking literally all the food they have
- 52:20Speaker 1: because he's made so many mistakes, Yeah, that sounds right
- 52:25Speaker 1: to me. And frankly, I don't think you guys get
- 52:28Speaker 1: to complain. And you know, he gets distracted because we
- 52:34Speaker 1: find out that there there's a whole other moment which
- 52:37Speaker 1: we'll get to, but you know, he gets distracted with
- 52:40Speaker 1: this news because Patro is reading the paper and there's
- 52:44Speaker 1: information in there about the resistance army, and that results
- 52:52Speaker 1: in Loofy leaving the kitchen and leaving the burner on,
- 52:55Speaker 1: which causes a huge fire and a bunch of damage
- 52:59Speaker 1: to the sonny. And again, you guys have nobody to
- 53:06Speaker 1: blame but yourselves. It's louviy Man. Don't give him any
- 53:12Speaker 1: job that takes sustained focus of more than ten minutes,
- 53:18Speaker 1: I think at max, unless it's fighting, Like that's the
- 53:24Speaker 1: only thing that he seems to be able to focus
- 53:27Speaker 1: on for more than ten minutes at a time. Cooking
- 53:30Speaker 1: requires so many particular skills. It requires understanding of flavors,
- 53:37Speaker 1: it requires a sense of timing, which it's weird because
- 53:40Speaker 1: you would think I would be really bad at that
- 53:42Speaker 1: because I have time blindness and I can be but
- 53:46Speaker 1: when it comes to cooking, the steaks are so high
- 53:49Speaker 1: for me because one I love food and two I
- 53:51Speaker 1: hate waste. So I really managed to dial in when
- 53:56Speaker 1: it comes to that. And also it just takes actual skill,
- 54:01Speaker 1: which he doesn't have in the physical act of cooking
- 54:05Speaker 1: a thing. So yeah, the whole thing, it's that they're
- 54:09Speaker 1: on the high seas with apparently no food. Now, there
- 54:14Speaker 1: had been a moment where Brooke is showing Kara around
- 54:17Speaker 1: the ship and he points out the fish tanks and
- 54:23Speaker 1: he says, like, these are the aquariums for fish we're
- 54:26Speaker 1: going to eat, so it's sort of like a pantry.
- 54:31Speaker 1: I'm assuming Lufy must have cleaned that out too, right, Like,
- 54:35Speaker 1: even if he did, though, they're on the ocean, so
- 54:40Speaker 1: there's gotta be fish, and just don't let him cook them.
- 54:45Speaker 1: They won't be super tasty, probably because it seems like
- 54:49Speaker 1: he used up most of the seasonings and everything. But
- 54:52Speaker 1: you know, you're on salt water, so just he's a
- 54:56Speaker 1: little salt on that fish and you should be mostly okay.
- 55:00Speaker 1: That should be all right, So let's really briefly back
- 55:05Speaker 1: up and talk about him realizing that his dad is Dragon.
- 55:10Speaker 1: You guys, this is so weird. It's like and everybody
- 55:17Speaker 1: has the same reaction that I do. So I kind
- 55:18Speaker 1: of appreciated it because at the moment of it happening,
- 55:23Speaker 1: I was sort of like, hold on, and then it seemed, oh, okay,
- 55:27Speaker 1: this is all on purpose, I see. But I definitely
- 55:30Speaker 1: was a bit lost for a second. But yeah, Loofy
- 55:35Speaker 1: is uh. He's been like given all the information to
- 55:39Speaker 1: connect the dots about who his dad is, but never
- 55:42Speaker 1: did it. So in this moment, it's the first time
- 55:50Speaker 1: that he's like really understood who his father is and
- 55:55Speaker 1: the significance of his father's position in the army, the
- 56:01Speaker 1: resistance army. So that's wild because I just have been
- 56:08Speaker 1: operating this entire time on the assumption that he knew,
- 56:14Speaker 1: and it never even occurred to me that he didn't.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I'm not really sure how much this changes. It's it's
- 56:26Speaker 1: sort of it's weird, it's interesting, and it's sort of refreshing.
- 56:30Speaker 1: And I have to admit, Loofy isn't a person who
- 56:34Speaker 1: cares that much it seems about meeting his dad. When
- 56:42Speaker 1: I say it's refreshing, what I mean is a lot
- 56:48Speaker 1: of characters in fiction who either don't know their parents,
- 56:54Speaker 1: or there's like a history there that they weren't aware of,
- 56:57Speaker 1: or they didn't grow up with them. A lot of
- 57:00Speaker 1: their story, understandably is centered around them wanting to meet
- 57:06Speaker 1: their parents, wondering who they are and what they're like,
- 57:08Speaker 1: and wishing that they had grown up a different way,
- 57:12Speaker 1: that things had gone a different way, and all of
- 57:17Speaker 1: that has it. But like I said, it makes sense,
- 57:22Speaker 1: but it feels like, for me, kind of uninteresting after
- 57:27Speaker 1: a while, just because so many characters, especially in like
- 57:32Speaker 1: ya stuff, haven't got parents that if you have them,
- 57:36Speaker 1: all be driven by that sort of motivation. You do
- 57:45Speaker 1: this trope over and over and over again, and it
- 57:47Speaker 1: just gets kind of boring. And when you are somebody
- 57:50Speaker 1: who has parents, you kind of like you can't relate,
- 57:54Speaker 1: you know, you're just sort of feeling like, yeah, yeah,
- 57:57Speaker 1: you're sad about parents, right enough, because especially as like
- 58:02Speaker 1: a little kid, it's it can be very hard to
- 58:06Speaker 1: relate sometimes when it seems like somebody has a preoccupation
- 58:11Speaker 1: with something that you just take for granted. I like
- 58:14Speaker 1: to think that as an adult, I've gotten to be
- 58:16Speaker 1: a little bit more empathetic than I was, but I
- 58:19Speaker 1: still can get kind of impatient with that trope. I'm
- 58:22Speaker 1: not going to lie, And this for me was very
- 58:28Speaker 1: much like giving that. The moment of him just being like, oh,
- 58:33Speaker 1: that's my dad, It's like he's not he has not
- 58:38Speaker 1: cared who his parents are. Really he it's not like
- 58:42Speaker 1: he feels nothing about the concept of family, because his
- 58:46Speaker 1: relationship with Ace obviously meant so much to him. So
- 58:51Speaker 1: I'm not trying to pretend that it's like, you know,
- 58:54Speaker 1: not a factor in his life or anything. But the
- 58:59Speaker 1: press question who is my father? Where is he it's
- 59:06Speaker 1: obviously not been pressing for him. He hasn't really cared
- 59:10Speaker 1: all that much. And I'm sorry, but I find that
- 59:14Speaker 1: genuinely sort of hilarious that it's just he didn't he
- 59:20Speaker 1: Now that he's found out, he's startled and he is
- 59:23Speaker 1: a little interested, but it's lufy has had his own
- 59:28Speaker 1: concerns and his own plan for getting on with his
- 59:31Speaker 1: own life, and the idea of his parents and who
- 59:35Speaker 1: they are and where they came from and what they
- 59:37Speaker 1: might be up to genuinely never even bothered him for
- 59:43Speaker 1: a second, I sort of love it. I am not
- 59:47Speaker 1: gonna lie I sort of love it. I just think
- 59:49Speaker 1: it's like a it's not surprising really when you know
- 59:54Speaker 1: who Lufy is and understand the way that he like
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: just disconnects from reality frankly a lot of the time.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: You know, if I had stopped and really thought about it,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: this shouldn't have surprised me because he hasn't talked about
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: his own father ever, so probably I shouldn't have been
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: caught as off guard as I was by this, you
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, But I can't help it. I was,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: and I liked the fact that everybody else is like
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: in the same boat as I am, because I don't
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: even know, Like I said, I don't know what this
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: changes now that he knows, is this going to like
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: is he going to want to suddenly change course and
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: go find his dad? It doesn't seem like it. I mean,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: the whole thing is like this island is part of
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: the situation that blew up right and his dad like
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: they're I'm trying to remember exactly what that you call it,
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: what that headline is that we see, because I'm scrubbing
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: through the episode trying to find the moment, and I
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: am I think on the wrong episode because I think
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: this happens on the second of the three episodes. I
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: might be wrong about this. Oh no, no, it isn't
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: the third episode. Let's see. Oh I also want to mention, like, so,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: let's see, you didn't mention that, what kind of family
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: are you this? Nami? So wait the dragon guy beside
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: him here, Yes, that's your father. You remember what your
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: grandpa said two years ago? Right, And Lufy, that's my dad,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: this guy and I've never seen him Loofy's dad's the
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: boss of the Revolutionary Army. So cool. And Robin keeps
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: like rubbing her face against his. She keeps doing gars you.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: She's also chewing on his ear a lot and like
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: yanking on it. So oh yeah, here's what. She starts
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: chewing on his ear. I guess this is supposed to
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: be a thing with like just how rabbits are nibbling
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: on stuff all the time. But it is a really
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: weird character trait to put in there. And yeah, Lufy
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: just like steps right past this and then says, I
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: hope that Sabo's okay, And so I don't think that,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: like it really does matter to him or changes anything.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: Now that he knows who his dad is, it just
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: seems sort of oh, really, well, you know, and then
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: like moving on, which I'm I'm not mad at, but
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: it is funny. The hideout is blown up, thank you, Florie.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: And that's right because we saw the moment that what's
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: his face was like hiding and telling people where the
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: island was that he had accidentally washed up on the
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: shore or something. I don't even remember how that happened,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: but I remember the scene. So the last part of
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: this that I haven't touched on yet, I think is
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: just sort of the end of this episode where we're
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: with Kaido who's getting drunk. And honestly, this scene was
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: just like a real weird one. So Kaido's getting drunk
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: and there's like a very frankly uncomfortable dynamic going on
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: here where his men are tiptoeing around him, very worried
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: because when he drinks, his mood dramatically changes, and so
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: they have to be cautious on whether or not he's
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: feeling like an angry drunk or an emotional drunk or whatever.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: And also whatever that is can change on a dime.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: It seems like when I say it's an uncomfortable dynamic.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: I mean that, like, if you are somebody who has
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: grown up around a person who drinks, who has these
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: sorts of mood swings, it's not funny. It's genuinely kind
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: of upsetting. And so the way that this is treated
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: as though it's like a bit of a joke just
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: didn't really hit for me. But I confess that that's
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: because I don't personally feel like this is something to
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: joke about. It's just I am oversensitive about it, and
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: I acknowledge that it's just something that you know, at
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: times you are not able to have a sense of
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: humor about certain things because of how they affected you,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: and this is one of those things for me. And
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: the whole thing with him is just basically focusing on
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: how he wants to get back at the worst Generation
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: and how angry he is at the way that everything
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: with do Flemingo's plan just like blew up, and he
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: is blaming the worst generation in general for that. And
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: then we see that he's got kid like tied up
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: and the dude just like bleeding and has been beat
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: up clearly, And it's sort of odd because this dude
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: didn't have anything to do with it as far as
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I remember. But he's apparently just kind of blaming this
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: whole generation for his own difficulties, and so the logic
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: doesn't appear to really be playing that much of a
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: role in this when it comes down to it, And yeah,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: I just I don't I'm really curious, you guys, how
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: many of y'all out there were like caught up in
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: this whole thing with Kaido, Because if I'm being real,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: I find kind of I find kind of I was
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: gonna say kinda and I put them together, but I
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: find kind of kind of boring already, and I'm worried
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: about it because it seems like he's going to play
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: into things a lot, and if I'm already just sort
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: of over it, then I feel like that doesn't bode well.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: So I'm just sort of hoping that like, once we
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: get there, I will care a little bit more, or
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: once we get there, there will be other people factoring
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: in that sort of add a little bit of flavor
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: that we don't have yet, or the steaks will be
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: enough to sort of keep me interested. But as of
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: right now, we have just seen so many very big,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: very strong, tough men who are practically indestructible, even though
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: it's being emphasized that nothing can kill him in a
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: way that's supposed to set him apart. Nobody dies in
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: this universe anyway, so it's really hard for him being
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: indestructible to matter because it seems like mostly everybody kind
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: of is unless they are in a flashback or ace,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: you know, So like, I just can't really care. And honestly,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: like we even see in this group of episodes that
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Jack is still alive at the bottom of the ocean,
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: and I don't know how that's supposed to be working.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Why is he still alive? He should drown. Apparently, if
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: you eat a devil fruit, you drown, That's just it.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: So why is he alive and waiting for somebody to
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: come get him? Why isn't he just drowning? Which makes
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Kaido being indestructible feel a lot less impressive, because like
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Jack's also fine, you know, I don't know, Florian says
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: he is half fish man Jack is I'm sure that
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: we must have found this out at some point. I'm
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: just not remembering it. But he's a mammoth. How is what?
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I I believe you, Florian, we see it by his teeth,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: says Florian. Okay, this is ringing a faint, faint bell,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: all right, So the mammothing is a devil fruit, so
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: he is a fish man that ate a devil fruit. Okay, okay, fair, okay,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: But I still kind of feel like this stands. You know, Jack,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: the SmackDown got laid down on him so completely and
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: he's fine, just waiting for somebody to come pick him up,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: like it's uber. I feel like Kaido is gonna have
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: to have a lot more going on for me to
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: care and think he's like a fun villain. So I
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: hope you bring it, Kaido. That's all I'm saying. We
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: need something more from you. All Right, I'm gonna wrap
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: this up. But uh, it was honestly kind of fun
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: to not have a lot of like plot to get
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: through with these episodes and just be able to talk
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: about the flashbacks and stuff again. And I am interested
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: in where we're going with Reverie. So the next three
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: episodes are filler. That is skipping that I'm skipping, but yeah,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: after that, we're back on track again. So all right, everybody,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: thank you well again so much for listening. Thank you
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: to Florian for commissioning this, he says, this was fun. Yeah,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I'm very glad. I wasn't sure how I would go,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: but I liked doing this one so and I will
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: see you all again soon with a new episode. Until then,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: that was an unspoiled network podcast.
