- Lucas: Hey everyone, it is great to be back with you for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna! Oh, I am so hungry right now. It is getting late, and my stomach is growling. Lucas: I hear you. Well, we are here to help you learn, but we can also talk about what to do when you are hungry. Today, we are going into the kitchen. Luna: Yes! The kitchen. That is where the magic happens. Or where the mess happens. But mostly the good food part. Lucas: Exactly. And to talk about cooking in German, we need some specific verbs. We have learned many words already, but now we need actions. Let us start with the most common one. Luna: Okay, I am ready. What is the first verb? Lucas: The first verb is Kochen. It means to cook. Usually, this is for liquids like soup or coffee. Listen closely: Kochen. Luna: Kochen. Okay, that sounds easy. Like cooking something hot. Lucas: Right. Now let us put it in a simple sentence. If you are making soup, you say: Ich koche Suppe. Luna: Ich koche Suppe. I am cooking soup. Got it. That feels very natural. Lucas: It does. So, if someone asks you what you are doing in the kitchen, you can tell them: Ich koche Suppe. Luna: Ich koche Suppe. Yes. I love soup. Especially when it is cold outside. Lucas: Totally. Now, what if you are not making soup? What if you are making something sweet? Like a cake? Luna: Oh, I love cake. How do you say bake in German? Lucas: Great question. The word for bake is Backen. Listen: Backen. Luna: Backen. Okay. B-A-C-K-E-N. It has a nice sound to it. Lucas: It does. And for a full sentence, if you are making a cake with friends, you say: Wir backen einen Kuchen. Luna: Wir backen einen Kuchen. We are baking a cake. Wow, that is so good. I can almost smell the vanilla. Lucas: Aww. I love that. So, Wir backen einen Kuchen. Say it again slowly for me. Luna: Wir backen einen Kuchen. There. I nailed it. Lucas: Nailed it. Exactly. Now, imagine we are all in the kitchen together. You are baking, I am cooking soup. But wait, there is a problem. The vegetables are whole. They are big carrots and big potatoes. Luna: Oh no. You cannot just throw them in the pot like that. Someone needs to cut them up. Lucas: Exactly. Who cuts the vegetables? In German, to chop or to slice is Schneiden. Listen: Schneiden. Luna: Schneiden. s c h n e i d e n. That is a tricky one. It has that 'sch' sound at the start. Lucas: It does. And when we use it in a sentence, we often say: Er schneidet das Gemüse. He is cutting the vegetables. Luna: Er schneidet das Gemüse. Okay. Let me try. Er schneidet das Gemüse. Is that right? Lucas: So close. Tiny tweak. Remember the 'd' at the end of Schneidet. It is soft. Try again: Er schneidet das Gemüse. Luna: Er schneidet das Gemüse. Ah, yes. There it is. Much better. Lucas: Perfect. You did it. So, Er schneidet das Gemüse. Imagine your brother is helping you prepare dinner. He is chopping the veggies while you bake the cake. Luna: That sounds like a perfect team. I am Wir backen einen Kuchen, and he is Er schneidet das Gemüse. It works. Lucas: It really does. Now, one last thing. We have soup, we have cake, we have chopped veggies. But what about pasta? Everyone loves pasta. Luna: Oh, pasta is life. How do you say boil noodles or cook pasta? Lucas: We use the same verb, Kochen. But for pasta, we say: Sie kocht die Nudeln. She is boiling the noodles. Luna: Sie kocht die Nudeln. Wait, let me repeat that. Sie kocht die Nudeln. That is so satisfying to say. Lucas: It is. And notice how Kochen changes slightly because of the subject. But the meaning stays clear. She is cooking the noodles. Luna: Sie kocht die Nudeln. Yeah. I think I have got this down. Cook soup, bake cake, cut veggies, boil noodles. Lucas: You have got it. Ich koche Suppe. Wir backen einen Kuchen. Er schneidet das Gemüse. Sie kocht die Nudeln. Four powerful phrases. Luna: Four powerful phrases. And now I am even hungrier. This is great, Lucas. Really helpful. Lucas: I am glad. Before we go, I want to mention something important. We deliberately don't run ads on these episodes. It really keeps the show clean and focused on learning. Thanks for listening and for supporting us. Lucas: Anyway, back to the kitchen. Think about what you will cook tonight. Maybe you will try one of these sentences. Luna: I think I will try to bake a cake. But first, I need to find my apron. Okay, let us review quickly. Lucas: Sure. Let us say them all together one last time. Start with the soup. Luna: Ich koche Suppe. Okay, next the cake. Lucas: Wir backen einen Kuchen. Good. Now the vegetables. Luna: Er schneidet das Gemüse. And finally the pasta. Lucas: Sie kocht die Nudeln. Beautiful. You are doing so well. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I feel like I could actually open a restaurant with these phrases. A very small, cozy restaurant. Lucas: I would eat there. The soup sounds amazing. Alright, practice these till we chat again. See you next time. Luna: Bye everyone! Keep cooking, keep learning. Bye!
