Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Jacksonville Jaguar's fans, welcome and to do Vault Daily, presented by GenJag.com and fueled by Brass Tax Coffee.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's Tuesday, October 13th.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: I am your host, Jordan Deluggo.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: And right now, we are getting into the Jaguar's defensive standouts from their week five win over the Philadelphia Eagles in London, pretty wild game.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: I have pretty wild game.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: We have established that at this point.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: The entire NFL has kind of been a buzz talking about this game.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: Jaguars go down with eight seconds left, return a kick, 50 plus yards, Devon Hamilton snaps to Logan Cook, Camelittle drills it.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: Jaguars win 1917 from 57 yards out, walk off fuel goal, right?
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: So that was insane.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: Brian Sexton, I think, said, that's the only time, and either NFL history or like the last 50 years or something like that,
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: Two teams have taken the lead with 10 seconds or less left in the ballgame, wild stuff, wild wild stuff.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: But right now we're talking about the Jaguar's defensive standouts in this game.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: And the Jaguar's, they only gave up 17 points.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: They gave up 14 first half points, and only three in the second half, which was with eight seconds left in the ballgame.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: they gave up that three points.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: So honestly, for the Jaguar's, evens of standouts, I think the adjustment by Campanila, at halftime was very good.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think that he had a couple plays, obviously, they were not in a good look for what the Eagles were trying to do.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: They were running more man coverage in the first half, which they've run more man coverage this year in general.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: It needs to be against the team that is...
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: A, most of around just should not be on the field very much in man coverage on the outside.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: If you're gonna be running man, your outside corners need to be Travis Hunter and Jarring Jones.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously you don't want that to be a tell so you have to keep it honest, right?
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: You have to keep some balance there.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: And then Jordan Lewis in the slot, if he's in man coverage, you can't be covering a jail and water type player, right?
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: You just can't have those types of matchups in my opinion, and man, just, I don't think you have much of a shot.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: Quite frankly.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: Buster Brown obviously gave up a 62 yard touchdown on a third and 10.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: Just got burned off the line.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: And so we're starting off with some of the negative because it's going to be mostly extremely positive.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: Buster Brown, 62 yarder, Darius Cooper, just flying down the field, had no chance of keeping up with him, didn't get hands on him at the line of scrimmage.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if Buster Brown's going to be in man coverage, he's got to be physical at the line.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: because he needs to slow the receiver down somehow because if that receiver gets a free release, most of the time their receiver's gonna be faster than Buster.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: Just as what it is.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: So he's got to be able to get hands and he did not on that play and it's 62 yards to pay dirt.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Beyond that,
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there was, that was one scoring drive for the Eagles.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: And then there was one more scoring drive for the Eagles where it was third and 10, you get a completion on, you know, pretty well-designed concept overall where Jarian Jones has outside leverage.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: They move inside.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's man coverage first down.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then you have a Travis Hunter passenger clearance where he just didn't make a very good play.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I think you had one other third down conversion from long distance on that drive as well.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: So it was just this little stretch of the ball game where 3rd and 10 third and long was a huge problem for the Jaguar's defense and primarily because of man coverage.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think that even though Travis Hunter can absolutely play man coverage at a very high level and even though Jarian Jones is pretty good at man coverage.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's a tough world to live in for this Jaguar's team, consistently.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: Travis Hunter's been great in man coverage, but
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: Jarion is a little up and down as a man guy.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's just so physical and so grabby and aggressive.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: He got call for passenger clearance in this game.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think it was passenger clearance.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it should have been called.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: But you can absolutely ding him for a play that didn't even count on the stat sheet.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: When the Jaguar is doing like an all-out blitz, it's one on one on the outside.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: Jarion looks flat-footed and then he bites on an out and up and you know,
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: that that play should have ended up being a touchdown on Jari and Jones, you know, sheet.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: Jail and Hertz missed the throw.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: Other than those couple plays and, and, you know, round lane kind of looking a little bit susceptible in space.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: I thought their S of the defense was excellent.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think that moving forward, you've got to be really dialed in if you're
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: the situations you're calling man coverage and the players you have on the field and the specific matchups they have it has to be dialed it's got to be because you can't afford to be given up 62 yard touchdowns you can't afford to have you know don't have you on wicks wide open down the field i mean that could have been disastrous instead it ends up being a punt
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: But, getting into, as I said, the defensive standouts in this game, the players who played extremely well.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty much everyone else we didn't mention just now, and I think the crazy thing is, even though, Buster Brown did give up that 62 yard completion, overall he played well, even though Jari and Jones had that coverage Buster overall, he played well.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you give up those huge plays, it's hard to put you on a standout list, but
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: 99% of the game.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: Those guys played well.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: And look, this was a Eagles offense that was toothless basically.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: Seriously.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, it was like, you just, you didn't have Barclay.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't have Smith.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't have three of your top five offensive line before of your top five offensive.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, everybody was down.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, Jalen Hertz just isn't really feeling comfortable and confident
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: This was an offensive Jaguar, it's probably should have held under 10 points.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't quite do that again because of some of the plays we just mentioned.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: But the Mon Hamilton, beyond the obvious double duty he had to do with, uh,
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: long snapping.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: I thought he was just excellent.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: He had pressure in this game.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: He was dominating against the run.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: So physical, so strong.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: And again, able to actually get not even slow pressure, pretty quick pressure.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I know a lot of people will kind of talk about the jaguars need to finish, they need to get home with the pass rush.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: The pass rush dominated this game.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: Jalen Hertz,
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: had to get the football out insanely quickly.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: And even that wasn't very effective, right?
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the past rush was coming.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: The Jaguars had 26 pressures in this game.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: 26.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: They only had one sack, but like Jalen hurts new, he had to get the ball out quickly.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, I think the Jaguar's past rush has really come alive over the last few weeks, last couple weeks, I should say, and I think that they're on track to be a unit that can help this team win games.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: Again, you've got to make sure you're buttoned up on the back end.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: outside of Travis Hunter.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: You got to make sure you're buttoned up.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: But the Von Hamilton dominated this football game for the Jaguars.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think you can say the same thing about Josh Hinds Allen and Trayvall Walker.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like those two guys, they combine for like 10 pressures.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: Trayvon combined for the half sack with with Antonio Johnson there and Josh Heinz Allen was dominating against I mean He had four stops.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: He had four five pressures two quarterback hits and he was part of the reason again Jalen heard snowy had to get the ball out incredibly quickly and he wasn't exclusively lined up against Jordan my lot of but he lined up against him a good bit And so yeah, I thought Josh was great.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: Trayvon has been a game record all year just moving him around
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: allowing him to hunt matchups and use his athleticism and strength and I think he's been really good all year obviously He had some favorable matchups with the with the Eagles right tackle So yeah, I think both of your edges played like those those guys that are getting paid a lot of money, which they absolutely are How about ventral Miller?
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, his ventral miller been the guy who deserves like the most apology from the fan base this year.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people didn't want him starting, same thing as Devon Lloyd last year.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: And ventral miller has been insane for the Jaguars.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's a blitzing demon.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's a run defense demon.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's even been excellent and past coverage.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you look at, in this game,
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: He, he info a, they gave up like one pass really early for what was it, uh, uh, just a couple yards right in between them, but outside of that, I mean, past breakup, solid and covered, you're not trying to target.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: And then of course, jail and hurts doesn't target the deep or intermediate middle of the field, all that much, but, uh, Ventra was excellent.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: Execute his assignment and coverage, which is usually just kind of like a spot drop zone type of deal, not like a big difficult assignment Fly down hill and attack offensive linemen blow them up and then make a play and then if he actually doesn't have to get past on offensive linemen the speed and efficiency and
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: just like shot out of a cannon type of style that he has as a run defender is awesome.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's a really good blitzer too.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: So Benchrow Miller, awesome game, awesome season so far for the Jaguars.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: He might be the highest rated linebacker in the league on BFF, let's see here.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's like a 91 rating right now.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: He is the highest rated linebacker in football right now, which is just incredible.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: No one else is really even close that's starting.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: Fred, Ventral Miller has a 91.8 grade, which I don't care that much about BFF grades, but it is interesting.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: Ventral Miller has a 91.8 PFF grade.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: The next closest guy that's a starter is Fred Warner at 83.5.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Gvintrell has been all that and a bag of chips.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's been everything you could ask for.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: Travis Hunter, outside of that passenger appearance, I loved the way he played.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: He was able to get a pass break up on a short yardage play.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: He was able to play sticky.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: He came down hill and played the run when guys were trying to get outside and tossed them.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought that he played a really, really good game for the Jaguars.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: love to see that.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: Again, yes, there's the passenger friends.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple short completions on him, but overall, and like one play out route, Travis hunters all over it, but Wix just makes a great play.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes that's going to happen.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes that's going to happen.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_00]: And there's no big deal there.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: And PFF didn't credit him for the past breakup, but that was like clearly a past breakup or past defended on that short yardage play where he got them off the
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: So Travis Hunter continues to shine in my opinion, Antonio Johnson.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, what a game coming downhill from him.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: And that's like Ben has rolled this year as a downhill thumping type safety for the most part.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's done some other things, but that's where you've seen the big plays.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: The blitz is like what a, the blitz late in the game was a huge play for the Jack Wars defense, where he just is, again, shot out of a cannon type of play.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: He and Trayvon Walker, Jalen Hurts has no chance.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_00]: Coming downhill as a tight end, Johnny Munt, shout out, trying to catch a pass around the line of scrimmage just blows him up and complete pass.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: Coming downhill against the run, like Antonio Johnson's just a beast.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: He is such a physical and athletic player that makes such a big impact for the Jaguar's defense.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I did, finally, also, I want to shout out foe, Luickin, who just played a super consistent
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: did a great job for them.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, he allowed five completions, but it was for an average of six point hate yards per catch.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: You will allow that no problem all day.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: It was all underneath in front of him type stuff.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of what this defense is designed to allow.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: And then Ruka Rohr, I thought, had a really good game as well.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: He was early on, especially generating a good amount of pressure.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: Dennis Gardeck deserves a shout out for some of the, he's a splash play type of guy.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: He's also a do your job type of guy, but he can create some splash plays and then,
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Cardiac, and I also thought that Eric Armstead was firing off the ball well.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't put up much numbers, but he was firing off the ball and making it difficult for the offensive line and for Jalen Hertz.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: So that'll do it for this one.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: Really appreciate y'all tuning in.
