- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! Luna: Thanks Lucas! I'm so excited. Last time we talked about food. Today... something close to home? Lucas: Exactly. Today we're talking about family. Family members in Dutch. Luna: Oh, I love that. My family is huge. Let's start with the basics. Lucas: Good. First word: 'mama'. Say it with me: ma-ma. Luna: Mama. That's easy. Almost the same as English. Lucas: Yep. 'Mama' means mom. Next: 'papa'. Luna: Papa. Dad. Okay, got it. Lucas: Now a trickier one: 'broer'. Brother. Say it: broer. Luna: Broer. Hmm. It's like 'bro' with an 'er'. Lucas: Yeah, exactly. Now for sister: 'zus'. Zzzzus. Luna: Zus. That sounds like 'sister' but shorter. Lucas: Right. Let's practice them all together. Repeat after me: mama, papa, broer, zus. Luna: Mama, papa, broer, zus. Lucas: Perfect! Now let's learn a question: 'Wie is dat?' That means 'Who is that?'. Luna: Wie is dat? Who is that? Okay. Wie is dat? Lucas: Good. So you can point to a photo and ask. Let's try a scene. Luna: I love scenes! So I look at a photo and say... 'Wie is dat?' Lucas: Then I answer: 'Dat is mijn mama.' That is my mom. Luna: Oh, 'mijn' means 'my'. So 'Dat is mijn mama.' Lucas: Yes! And if it's your dad: 'Dat is mijn papa.' Luna: Dat is mijn papa. Got it. What about brother? 'Dat is mijn broer.' Lucas: Exactly. And sister: 'Dat is mijn zus.' Luna: Dat is mijn zus. All right. Let me try a whole conversation. Lucas: Go for it! I'll be the one answering. Luna: Okay... 'Wie is dat?' Lucas: Dat is mijn broer. Luna: Oh, your brother! Cool. And if I want to say 'That is my sister'? 'Dat is mijn zus.' Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a quick review. Say the words after me: mama. Luna: Mama. Lucas: Papa. Luna: Papa. Lucas: Broer. Luna: Broer. Lucas: Zus. Luna: Zus. Lucas: Wie is dat? Luna: Wie is dat? Lucas: Excellent. Now let's make it a little harder. Let's talk about someone else's family. Say you see a friend and they show you a photo. You ask 'Wie is dat?' and they say 'Dat is mijn broer en mijn zus.' Luna: Dat is mijn broer en mijn zus. 'En' means 'and'? Lucas: Yes! 'En' is 'and'. So brother and sister. Luna: Cool. And how about 'That is my mom and dad'? 'Dat is mijn mama en mijn papa'? Lucas: Exactly right! You're a natural. Luna: Aww, thanks. So today we learned mama, papa, broer, zus, and Wie is dat? Lucas: And you used them all. Let's do one more round. Repeat: mama. Luna: Mama. Lucas: Papa. Luna: Papa. Lucas: Broer. Luna: Broer. Lucas: Zus. Luna: Zus. Lucas: Wie is dat? Luna: Wie is dat? Lucas: Great job. Now you can talk about your family in Dutch. Practice by naming your own family members. Use 'mijn'. Luna: I will! Thanks Lucas. And thanks to Fexingo for another fun episode. Lucas: Remember, repetition is the key. Say these words a few times today. See you next time! Luna: Tot ziens! Lucas: Tot ziens, Luna!
