- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, no, here's some really surprising news, said nobody ever.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Perth ranks dead last in Australia for cycle and scooter friendliness. Look,
- 0:10Speaker 1: to be fair, they're talking about infrastructure style.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Friendliness, not our friendliness.
- 0:18Speaker 3: To the scooter riders. Because some of those scooter riders
- 0:20Speaker 3: are not particularly friendly to us.
- 0:21Speaker 2: No, that's true.
- 0:21Speaker 1: But they're not really talking about us yelling out, ride
- 0:24Speaker 1: a single file, you.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 0:26Speaker 3: The rise of the scooter gang.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Compare the market has released new data measuring the popularity
- 0:31Speaker 1: of bike riding and related infrastructure in 120 major cities
- 0:36Speaker 1: across the world. And six Aussie cities register on that index.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Perth ranks 111 out of 120.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Well, we made it in. In terms of friendliness. That's
- 0:49Speaker 2: not bad. Well, no, no, no.
- 0:51Speaker 3: No?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Melbourne was crowned Australia's most bike-friendly city ahead of Sydney.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Of course they were.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Then Canberra, then Brisbane, then Adelaide, and then us. It
- 1:00Speaker 1: must be noted, though, that Melbourne only scraped in at
- 1:03Speaker 1: 83 internationally, so it's not like they were up in
- 1:07Speaker 1: the top 10. But naturally, European cities dominated the broader list.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Utrecht in the Netherlands topped it.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Oh, of course the Netherlands would. I mean, they've got
- 1:16Speaker 3: more bikes than people.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and they just share the bikes around, don't they?
- 1:19Speaker 1: You can just sort of get on one, get off it,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and no one, you know, doesn't, no one burns them.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And they don't have that stuff. The big sprawling suburbs
- 1:26Speaker 3: that we've got. No, that's exactly right. So it's completely different.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Or the hills.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I don't think so. Not until you get out a bit.
- 1:33Speaker 1: That's the second consecutive year that Utrecht has been on top,
- 1:38Speaker 1: beating out Germany's Freiburg in Breslau.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Oh, well done.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Because I looked at that and I went, I'm not
- 1:44Speaker 3: saying that.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I've just said it quickly. Belgium's Ghent. Yep. Paris and
- 1:48Speaker 2: Santiago in Chile.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yes. They measured three core factors. The percentage of people
- 1:53Speaker 1: traveling regularly by bike. The number of cycling routes and
- 1:58Speaker 1: the search interest for bike and scooter related terms.
- 2:02Speaker 2: What you Googling? Scooter.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Ironically, are ranking well behind Melbourne, although we have 715
- 2:14Speaker 1: cycling routes compared to their 513.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Just more of them are using it, I guess.
- 2:19Speaker 2: More of them are using it.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Well, it's more of them too.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah. And you know, Again, the sprawl in Melbourne is
- 2:25Speaker 1: not like the sprawl in Perth.
- 2:26Speaker 3: No, we're like a really big, long city.
- 2:29Speaker 2: We are.
- 2:30Speaker 3: All along the coast.
- 2:33Speaker 4: But I'd be interested to see where we came last year,
- 2:36Speaker 4: whether we've made.
- 2:39Speaker 3: It up the list.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Maybe we'll be higher than 111 next year.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Everyone on your scooters, let's make ourselves up that list. Yep.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Got to beat Adelaide at least.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Might as well use those 715 cycling routes that we've
- 2:52Speaker 1: got out there.
- 2:53Speaker 3: That's right. Explore each and every one of them.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Just keep to the left.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And single file.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:01Speaker 1: When we grew up, and on my Malvern Star with
- 3:06Speaker 1: the basket on the front with the flowers and streamers
- 3:09Speaker 1: on the handlebars, we were taught very specifically you had
- 3:14Speaker 1: to ride single file. Now you've got this Lycra strip.
- 3:19Speaker 1: In front of you of, you know, people writing three abreast.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Do better people.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I hate that expression.
- 3:32Speaker 3: All right. Single file. Let's just keep it there.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Well, I'm just wondering when the rule changed.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Well, I don't know that it technically did. It just
- 3:39Speaker 4: sort of, you know, people just drifted out of single
- 3:43Speaker 4: file and, you know, three abreast, I guess. Well.
