- 0:00People commonly believe that espousing a particular religion
- 0:05or religious doctrine, reading scriptural texts, singing
- 0:10devotional songs, practicing yoga or meditation, or any of
- 0:15the numerous other practices often called spiritual makes
- 0:20them spiritual. While these practices may help
- 0:24to turn their minds, their hearts, their life energy and
- 0:28even their bodies towards spiritual realization, they do
- 0:32not in and of themselves constitute living in the spirit,
- 0:38or as the Mother puts it, being born into the spirit.
- 0:44In the Bhagwad Gita, Arjuna asks Sri Krishna a related question.
- 0:49How to recognize the realized man?
- 0:53What is the sign of the man in samadhi whose intelligence is
- 0:57firmly fixed in wisdom? How does the sage of settled
- 1:01understanding speak? How sit, How walk?
- 1:05Bhagwad Gita Chapter 2, verse 54 translated by Sri Aurobindo in
- 1:11Bhagwad Gita and its Message. Sri Krishna's response makes it
- 1:16clear that none of the outward acts of the individual are
- 1:19relevant to the question of the inward realization of the
- 1:23individual. The true sign, as Sri Arrobindo
- 1:27explains in his comment on this verse, is quote.
- 1:31No such signs can be given, nor does the teacher attempt to
- 1:35supply them, for the only possible test of its possession
- 1:40is inward, and that there are plenty of hostile psychological
- 1:45forces to apply. Equality is the great stamp of
- 1:50the liberated soul, and of that equality even the most
- 1:54discernible signs are still subjective.
- 1:57End Quote. Being born into the spirit,
- 2:01then, is not something one can declare by simply espousing a
- 2:05specific doctrine or marching under the banner of some
- 2:09religion or other. It is not something that comes
- 2:13automatically by any of the practices generally attributed
- 2:17to the spiritual life. It is a transformation of the
- 2:21consciousness such that the individual lives in an
- 2:24atmosphere of oneness with the entire creation, breathes in the
- 2:30awareness of the spirit and moves under its impulsion.
- 2:36At that point the Spirit rules 1's life and actions when
- 2:41becomes liberated from attachment to the desires and
- 2:44fulfilments of the ego personality and acts under the
- 2:48direction and force of the spiritual purpose in the
- 2:52manifested universe. The Mother observes.
- 2:57Quote. For the moment the Spirit plays
- 3:00the part of a helper and guide, but it is not the all powerful
- 3:05Master of the material manifestation.
- 3:08When the Super Mind is organized into a new world, the Spirit
- 3:12will become the Master and govern nature in a clear and
- 3:16visible way. What is called new birth is the
- 3:20birth into the spiritual life, the spiritual consciousness.
- 3:25It is to carry in oneself something of the spirit, which
- 3:28individually, through the soul, can begin to rule the life and
- 3:33be the master of existence. But in the Super mental world,
- 3:38the spirit will be the master of this entire world and all its
- 3:42manifestations, all its expressions, consciously,
- 3:47spontaneously, naturally, in the individual existence.
- 3:53That is what makes all the difference, so long as one just
- 3:57speaks of the spirit and it is something one is read about
- 4:02whose existence 1 vaguely knows about, but not a very concrete
- 4:07reality for the consciousness. This means that one is not born
- 4:12into the spirit, and when one is born into the spirit, it becomes
- 4:17something much more concrete, much more living, much more
- 4:22real, much more tangible than the whole material world.
- 4:27And this is what makes the essential difference between
- 4:30beings. When that becomes spontaneously
- 4:34real, the true concrete existence, the atmosphere 1 can
- 4:40freely breathe, then one knows one has crossed over to the
- 4:44other side. But so long as it is something
- 4:47rather vague and hazy, you've heard about it.
- 4:51You know that it exists, but it has no concrete reality.
- 4:56Well, this means that the new birth has not yet taken place.
- 5:01As long as you tell yourself yes, this I can see this, I can
- 5:06touch the pain I suffer from, the hunger that torments me, the
- 5:12sleep that makes me feel heavy. This is real.
- 5:15This is concrete, Mother laughs. That means you have not yet
- 5:21crossed over to the other side. You are not born into the
- 5:25spirit. End Quote.
